A Cinderella Story

Emma & Katie spend a lot of time talking about 90s and 00s music, but get around to this Hillary Duff y2k-era romcom eventually. It's got Jennifer Coolidge! Volkswagen Beetles! Earthquakes! Droughts! The brand new form of communication known as texting!  And somehow we don't talk about Lizzie McGuire at all? Maybe next time.

Transcript

Speaker: Early 2000s. Famously featured today's film. Mike M not on the soundtrack, but Jimmy World on the soundtrack. Contemporaries of Mike M. All right. Goo Goo Dolls.

Speaker: Goo Goo Dolls. Yes. Another band yeah that Gen Z loves more than millennials did.

Speaker: We were, yeah, my friend was telling me about, she watches these YouTube videos of this guy breaks down like popular songs from different decades, from like the 80s, 90s, the 2000s, the 2010s.

Speaker: And he was breaking down the most popular songs on Spotify. And I was trying to guess what the number one song from the 90s on Spotify is. So there's multiple levels to it, right? So it's not the most successful song in the 90s. Okay. It's the most successful song on Spotify now that's from the 90s. Okay. And I said, give me a genre. And she said, alternative. And my first guess was, of course, Smells Like Tea and Spirit, which it is not not correct.

Speaker: Do you want to guess? Is it... Is it um the Aerosmith song from... It is not. Don't Want to Miss a Thing by Aerosmith. It is not. that is yeah That is... I would not classify that song as alternative. I think Aerosmith is as mainstream rock as it gets. Like, i don't think anybody could classify Aerosmith as alternative.

Speaker: And it's not... um It's not Radiohead. um Nope. God. My next guess was You Oughta Know by Alanis Morissette. Yeah, yeah, yeah that would that would be a solid guess. And then when I come around.

Speaker: It's Goo Goo Dolls because I feel like the way that we've led into this and the only reason is because of the way. Is it, what's the song that they play in this movie by the Goo Goo Dolls? Well, no, that was. don't know any songs. You know Iris. Iris is their most popular song. Okay, Iris. Is that Goo Goo Dolls?

Speaker: No, I don't know what that was. hairderder I don't know what that is. Iris is, and I don't want the world to see me. yeah And I don't think that they understand. Yeah. Well, then what was the song during during make-out rain football time? Okay, so that was the album after that. That was ah Sympathy, which is from Gutterflower. Oh. dizzy up the girl um I was a big Goo Goo Dolls fan uh when I was in middle school and early high school um and like I remember just somebody made fun of me once for wearing Goo Goo Dolls concert t-shirt the first concert I ever saw I mean well that's not true I saw some like concerts when i was a kid but like my first concert I went to see without my parents was the Goo Goo Dolls I was like 15 years old

Speaker: And I remember some kid made fun of my t-shirt. That's rude. Because the Goo Goo Dolls were not cool. um Yeah, they weren't. Sorry. now, Gen Z has really embraced the Goo Goo Dolls. Really? Yeah. ah Past and future guest, Gia Zekeresh, was on our last episode. ah Iris is like her favorite song.

Speaker: I just don't... I don't under understand. it it's they've They've really grown in popularity. Yeah. And like, they've got some good songs. I do. I think that Iris is a good song. When I was, yeah you know, 11 and I heard that song for the first time, I thought, okay, this is it. We've solved music. This is the best song that's ever, that's ever been released. And it's the best song that ever will be released. And we're all done. We can wrap it up.

Speaker: and We don't need to wrap it up. We don't need to make music anymore. Yeah. I remember playing it for my mom. don't the world to see. I remember playing it for my mom in the car and I was like, is this beautiful? And she's like, no, not really.

Speaker: So you thought you solved music. I did. But you can't solve music. In retrospect, my mom is not the best judge of of music because my mom only lonely listens to acapella music at this point, really. It's really unlistenable trash. But in the early 2000s, we hadn't discovered acapella yet. Glee had not come out.

Speaker: think that acapella was invented before Glee. I'm not 100% sure. We'll have to check the history books on that, but I think they had acapella before Glee. No, Ryan Murphy and Glee, they invented acapella.

Speaker: The interesting thing, well, the thing about Glee is most of those songs aren't acapella.

Speaker: They're very clearly recorded in a studio with a full band and lip synced kind of poorly. don't know. With lots of video of it um effects on their voice.

Speaker: I don't know. I'm pretty sure that's just Lea Michele's mouth making those noises. Anyway, so the point is, I then looked at what the most successful contemporary 90s songs were, the Billboard Hot 100 of the 90s total, yeah what were the best-selling songs of the 90s.

Speaker: um All the bands we mentioned, Goo Goo Dolls, Radiohead, Green Day, Alanis Morissette, fucking Nirvana, none of them are in the top 100. Yeah. What?

Speaker: Which really gives you a picture of what the 90s was really like like. What we see as like alternative, like Pearl Jam wasn't in the top 100. All of the 90s alternative music that has lasted was not as popular as, honestly, Boyz II Men and Mariah Carey dominated that chart.

Speaker: Oh, yeah, that makes sense. The boy is mine, the boy is mine, the boy is mine. Yeah, yeah. um That is on there as well. um ah There's a lot of Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera and NSYNC and Backstreet Boys. Hansen.

Speaker: Hansen is on there, yeah. um But in the top 10 is... That is not on there, no. um What? Macarena is number two. Number one is One Sweet Day by Boyz II Men and Mariah Carey. Number two is the Macarena, yeah.

Speaker: What? Um, but, uh, Informer by Snow is like number seven, which is a song that like has completely vanished from the cultural yeah consciousness.

Speaker: Couldn't even tell you what that sounds like. That's the Licky Licky Boom Boom Down song. Oh. Yeah. the The white rapper who is doing like a Jamaican accent. Yeah. That's, it's probably good for society that that's disappeared.

Speaker: Yeah. Big time. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. So anyway, all of that very relevant for this movie. Well, we have to take you back in time because this movie does ideally. Well, if you put the timeline to it, would theoretically start in the 90s.

Speaker: Yes, yes, it does start in the 90s. Yes. um ah They don't tell us that it starts in the 90s, but it starts in the ninety s Well, a famous 90s disaster is a big part of this movie, yes.

Speaker: Oh, that was an actual disaster? ah Yeah, yeah. The Northridge earthquake like killed a bunch of people, yeah. Oh, jeez. I thought they just made that up for this movie.

Speaker: I honestly thought that they just made it up because they were like, oh, we gotta kill off the dead somehow. The 1994, January 1994, the earthquake beneath the San Fernando Valley um killed 60 people and 9 000 were injured property damage to be estimated around 50 billion making it among the costliest natural disasters in u.s history i do think it's interesting though that like the this horrific natural natural natural disaster happens but their house is fine

Speaker: Yeah, how did he die and nobody else was hurt and the house is fine? That is the yeah the question. That doesn't make any sense. And answer is, the movie is not written very well. But we'll get into that. don't know what you're talking about, Katie. i think this movie's written pretty solidly.

Speaker: Okay. Are you going to do an intro or what? Yeah. Sorry. I was just like, our oh yeah. did it ah ah We're doing great today. ah That's right, guys. You guessed it. This is Go Get Your Girl. This is the podcast where Emma and Katie ah just

Speaker: two girls whose stepsister. Yep. I'm going to put us there. that That makes sense. That's that's our energy. Yep. Yep. Whose stepsister yeah it has been forced by their mother into the attic of their house from her beautiful bedroom because her dad dies in the San Fernando disaster of 1994. and uh she's just trying to get out of the house she's just trying to like work her job at the diner that mom owns that we don't have to work at because we're flesh and blood and she's not and you know just we're not gonna question it and she just has to do all the chores around the house kind of like i don't know oh god this story sounds kind of familiar would you say it's like Cinderella

Speaker: It's a bit of Cinderella story. It's a bit of a Cinderella story. ah And along the way, we learn that she's been um texting slash LOL.

Speaker: and She says, laugh out loud. Oh, yeah. Laugh out loud. I had a Listen, this has what we'll just say yeah, we'll get it. Yeah. And she's been like text messaging um this stranger on the Internet, which notoriously you are not supposed to do, but has full faith that he does, in fact, go to her school and is not a 75 year old they They they met in a in a Princeton hopefuls chat room.

Speaker: And what do you what about that says no pedophiles? Well, it's not like, I don't know. Well, it doesn't matter. yeah Let's move on.

Speaker: Honestly, anyways, ah and then the they he wants to meet. And it happens at the school dance, homecoming dance, which is ironically on Halloween. So we all have to wear masks. And ah they have a really lovely time. But then she has to run away because she has to get back to her job before our mom can find out. And he turns out to be the most popular boy in school. And he just wants to find this girl, even though she only wore the teeniest, tiniest little mask. He can't find her.

Speaker: is so ridiculous. I believe that he has face blindness. and And body blindness and voice blindness. And he might just be blind. He might just sort of be blind because he keeps running into her. And um along the way, we learn to stand up for us. Well, our sister stands learns to stand up for herself. And yeah. We learn nothing.

Speaker: We learn nothing. Except maybe synchronized swimming isn't for us. That's right, guys. I'm Emma. And I'm Katie. And today we are talking about the 2004 movie, A Cinderella Story.

Speaker: yeah Directed by Mark Rossman, who directed The House on Sorority Row, which I believe you own the soundtrack to on vinyl. Like the classic one?

Speaker: Yeah, yeah. Oh my God. Okay. Yeah, we do. He directed The Perfect Man, another Hilary Duff movie. He directed 11 episodes of alicsie of Lizzie McGuire.

Speaker: He directed Life Size. Remember that one? Oh, yeah. And a bunch of Hallmark movies now. um This movie is written by Lee Dunlap.

Speaker: Pause. Pause. Hard pause. He directed House on Sorority Row. Uh-huh, that's right. A horror classic.

Speaker: Yeah. Hope classic. Decided, I'm just going to do some wholesome family content now. It seems so. What? Um, let's see if he did any other, cause I skipped the movies that no one's ever heard of, you know?

Speaker: I don't think he did another. that's a fucking leap. He didn't do another movie, it looks like. Yeah. That's so interesting. did a Disney Channel film in the year after, two years after the House Story wrote, he did a Disney Channel movie called The Blue Yonder, which I'm guessing is about flying?

Speaker: <unk>ing um Maybe. i don't know. I'd be like, if it was like Smart House, that would make sense. If it was, you know, famous horror film Smart House.

Speaker: Totally. He did some like thrillers in the 80s, but no, that's it. He doesn't have that many sting to me movies. He directed a lot of TV, like almost yeah like most of the directors we talk about on this show. yeah yeah they um He did direct one episode of Greek, the classic ABC family show Greek, which I will continue to stand up for being a good show. love um ah But it is not an episode that I remembered by when I looked up the title of it. Well, you know.

Speaker: um Yes, and written by Lee, and i have forgotten her last name, Lee Dunlap, who wrote this. And then she wrote a tennis movie called 16 Love, which is not a possible score in tennis.

Speaker: Ah, well, that tracks for, you know, the caliber of writing in this film. Yeah, she wrote two I mean, this that's that that sounds like that actually is sports-related. This is tangentially sports-related rom-com because of the title and because of um some some dangling plot points here.

Speaker: um This movie is about Hilary Duff... Who is a tomboy who grows up very close with her father, Hal, who owns diner. We don't know anything about her mom. Yep. And we don't know anything about her mom.

Speaker: Her mom never mentioned. Don't know if she died. Don't know if she abandoned her. Don't know if they divorced or if dad maybe kidnapped her from mom so that he could have full custody. And she's on a milk carton somewhere.

Speaker: Jesus Christ. um It happens. Possible. Sure. um ah They're very close. He reads her um for fairy tales and she asks where do princes come from? And she's saying he says Princeton. So what she but she decides she has to go to Princeton.

Speaker: He dies in the 1994 Northridge earthquake. and Which you don't really understand how or why because nobody else is hurt. the how Hey, maybe Jennifer Coolidge killed him. That's what I'm thinking. The way that like things unravel, it seems like Jennifer Coolidge potentially killed him.

Speaker: and Jennifer Coolidge, hot hot off of her Legally Blonde heat, ah getting a big role in this movie. Maybe the biggest part she's ever had in a movie?

Speaker: um Quite possibly. Yeah, because now she's doing mostly TV. Well, I mean, she's a character actor. Jennifer Coolidge is not going to be your lead in anything. That's just not who she is. You can argue she's the lead in White Lotus.

Speaker: um ah No. I don't think you can. I would argue that she's the lead in White Lotus. I hate her in White Lotus. I know everybody loves her so much.

Speaker: And she's good, but like, man, that character. I was so glad when she got killed. Hey, spoilers for season two of the play Lotus. Yeah, but that's been out for like years. I just didn't want to deal with her anymore. um Playing a very similar character to the character that she plays in this. Playing a similar character to the character she plays in everything.

Speaker: but um the very funny Jennifer Coolidge um is the stepmom. She has two stepsisters, one of whom is Madeline Zima and the other one is Anonymous. Anonymous.

Speaker: Yep. Tackiness takes over the house. So yeah she is Tackiness takes over the house. Southern California, like trash, you know, she's constantly getting plastic surgery. She's yeah always just sitting at the pool, forcing Sam, Hillary death's character to do everything.

Speaker: And to feed her salmon because she's obsessed with the salmon diet. She's on a salmon diet, which there's a lot of like very contemporary to 2004 jokes in this. Also, one thing we should mention is that she's like, yeah, my dad died in the Northridge earthquake. And then it says eight years later, which would make it 2002, not And that's confusing. Yeah.

Speaker: yeah and that's confusing Yeah, I didn't do the math on that because I didn't know that that was an actual disaster. so i wasn wrapped around the axel on that because they really said it in the San Fernando Valley. Pretty solidly. They mentioned the San Fernando Valley a lot. They also mentioned a drought that is happening, which. Yep.

Speaker: It seems like they forget about for half the movie, um but it keeps coming up. Charlie made a really good point at the prom or the homecoming scene when they're when she's running out to get into EZA's car.

Speaker: um I'm going to call him EZA because he's in EZA. Yeah. yeah And all the sidewalks and streets are wet. Yeah. Yeah. And all the sidewalks and streets are wet. And he goes, it looks like a rain. And i was like, huh? And he goes, they are filming a movie.

Speaker: Yeah. And he was just like, you think it rained? Because they're in a drought, Emma. They're in a drought. um For those of you listeners who might not know, it is very common when filming exteriors at night to wet the street or sidewalk because you get bounce of lights off of the street. Yes. And it better helps illuminate your shot. Yes.

Speaker: But it doesn't work really well when your plot line is that you're in a drought. Is that it hasn't rained. Yes. Yes. so where hit make There are also a lot, a lot of like visible filming errors in this movie. Yeah. um It is also not particularly well directed. Much apologies to Mark Ronson. That can't be right. Mark Rosman.

Speaker: and that Charlie also tried to um gaslight me into believing that Mark Ronson directed this movie. He goes, Mark Ronson? Mark Ronson directed this? I was like, what? Who? goes, you know, Mark Ronson, Amy Whitehouse, Valerie, Mark Ronson. And I was just like, did he? And he goes, no, it's Mark Ronson.

Speaker: Um, ah yes. Um, they are, they have a um, a gay stereotype as a, uh, synchronized swimming instructor. They are terrible at synchronized swimming. I don't know why they want to do it. They hate each other. The stepsisters. hate each other.

Speaker: Um, Jennifer Coolidge says. Synchronized swimmers. Jennifer Coolidge says that droughts are for poor people. yeahp um And then I said accurate, which you should, everyone at home should Google what celebrities do during famous droughts in California and take a look at their yards versus all their neighbors' yards. Yeah. Is it ah basically that shot in the movie where we um go zoom out and their yard is like neon green and everybody else's is dead?

Speaker: Yeah. Because they've been watering their lawn with sprinklers when they shouldn't be. Yeah. Here's the thing. Here's the thing, listeners. Droughts are not for poor people. Droughts are for everybody. And so I hope that you all enjoy water because if you abuse it, you lose it.

Speaker: And here's the thing. They really are, though, because that's the thing. the ah The rich are never going to suffer any the consequences of their actions or of the actions of the planet because money can always buy you out of these things.

Speaker: Stupid. Hal's diner has been changed to Fiona's. Everything is yeah pink and everything everything they serve is salmon, which I don't understand how they're still in business. I don't either. There's salmon dish of the day every day.

Speaker: The great Regina King is um Rhonda or Rhoda, perhaps. I believe it's Rhonda. i think it's Rhoda. Maybe it is Rhoda. Is the woman who, yeah she's like the fairy godmother, basically, except there's no magic in this. She's just a nice woman who is the manager of the restaurant who cares about Sam. And in fact, all of the servers at the restaurant care about Sam. Yeah, we just learned the most about Regina King. um And by the most, I mean the bare minimum and yeah nothing further. And then add in some racial stereotypes. um Everybody has wear roller skates at their dining room.

Speaker: Yep, which is just so dumb. But also very early 2000s, like...

Speaker: like wink retro yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah like um oh my god what was it ed de bevins have you ever been to ed de bevins or ed de bevins or whatever no oh it was in i think it's back in chicago but it was a huge restaurant in chicago the huge chain of like these i remember going a lot as a kid it was this chain of diners is like 1950s diners where the um the staff would insult you and they all dressed up like famous like There was like an Elvis. There was like a Marilyn Monroe. Oh, yeah.

Speaker: Yeah. ah i Ed DeBevins. Sorry. Ed DeBevins. So it was like Dick's Last Resort crossed with Johnny Rockets? Pretty much. Yeah. Yeah, yeah. And then I think they opened one on a Magnificent Mile before the pandemic. I don't know if it survived the pandemic, though.

Speaker: I've never heard of that. um But yeah, there's lots of like retro diners um across the United States. Yeah. We meet Dan Boyd, who is her friend Carter or Carson?

Speaker: Carter. course. Who is... We're doing great. Would be gay if this movie was made five years later. Yeah, exactly.

Speaker: Because he has no sexual... Well, they try to force his sexuality onto the popular girl. yes. And it's just like, we couldn't just like let him be.

Speaker: We couldn't just like let him be his little wannabe actor self. We have to make sure that everyone knows that he's not gay because it's 2004. And much like when, you know, the Chad Michael Murray is texting with her later. He's like, you're not a guy, right? Because I'll kick your ass if you're a guy. Right? Whoa.

Speaker: I had the same reaction. I was like, whoa, whoa, whoa, dude. This is the guy we're supposed to like. I'll kick your ass. Yeah. So ah she drives a 1960s Mustang, which is just one of the coolest cars ever made. And she acts like it's a piece of shit. I mean, it's like yeah it needs to be restored and they get it restored at the end of the movie. But like, there's no way. Like she acts like she's driving PT Cruiser or something. And she has a very cool, like classic car.

Speaker: Like, they should have just given her, like, a Volkswagen. Yeah, yeah. Like a Volkswagen, like a, oh my god, what's called? Like a van? Not a van, but like, um like a, ah what's the the hatchback, the famous hatchback?

Speaker: Golf? e Cabriolet? Passat? it's like a type of car. I'm just gonna name all the Volkswagen's. A station wagon? Station wagon, there we go. They should have given her a station wagon.

Speaker: Yeah. um But they didn't. um ah she ah She likes to play baseball. Yeah. And and that's not dug into it all.

Speaker: and the And her dad used to say, you know, used to play baseball with her. And he told her, you know, if you're too worried about striking out, you'll never hit a home run or some kind of cliche that's baseball. I don't remember. Yeah. I watched this movie less than 12 hours ago. And I told him.

Speaker: yeah He's got some baseball advice. You miss all of the home runs. are you You'll never strike out if you don't ever take a chance. or you don't the What is it? it's so that i mean The actual quote, that's it's like you um you miss all the shots you don't take, right? that's Yeah, exactly. I think it's yeah that's that's what it's ah It's something like that except about baseball. Yeah.

Speaker: Yeah. um ah so um she uh then there's shelby cummings the unlikely name of shelby cummings who is yeah the popular girl in school who is just completely generic looking actress yep um she's in like a lot of stuff and she's that one actress that has like a weird scar over her like in between her eyebrows i'm she does yes her it's wow um it's not 2004 now emma it's not two thousand and four now emma i I know. I know.

Speaker: Chad Michael Murray is there. um ah And he's like the nice popular boy and everybody around him is evil. It's one of those things where it's like, why is this guy friends with all of the worst people in the world? doesn't make any sense.

Speaker: Because they're not the worst pair people in the world to him. They are though. they're They're awful to one another as well. um ah The stepsisters are two, are also losers, which I appreciate. Yeah.

Speaker: We have ah Simon Helberg a nerd who has a crush on her. Yeah, big, big theory. And we have a secret admirer. Yeah, that she met in her chat room. She's Princeton Girl 818, and he Nomad. Yeah. And is this the first big movie that featured texting as part of the plot? I want to say it was. Or that texting all? It's very early there to be that much texting in this movie. Right?

Speaker: So much so that they do these really hard to look at close-ups of the phone yeah screen instead of of, of a fake phone screen, instead of like putting the the text on the screen, which they, exactly it took um a few years to get around to get around to, but I feel like maybe five years later they had kind of worked all that out.

Speaker: Yeah, yeah, yeah. But like in like this movie, because like I can't name you an early 2000s movie that like has so much texting in it. The next one that I think of is the Miley Cyrus movie, LOL. Yeah.

Speaker: Which is famously terrible. It's based on a French film. It's famously terrible. That's 2012. Yeah, so that is that is eight years later. Yeah. yeah I have not seen l o l It has Demi Moore in it Yeah. ah But like, I want to say that for a huge part of the early 2000s, they just skirted around the fact that texting was like a major, becoming a major mode of communication with teens. It's also on AIM.

Speaker: She's on AIM and text and email with him. That's way too many a modes. She seems to be on AIM on her phone, which I don't think was possible in 2004. Like she's got a sprint flip phone.

Speaker: Definitely not if you were poor, but like if you had like unlimited internet. I don't think that that you you think you had aim on your phone in 2004. I want to say that you could get to aim on your phone, but you'd have to pull up a web browser and like pay extra to get on the web.

Speaker: Oh, wow. That would be crazy. Um, yeah anyway, because I want to say I accidentally did it once. Oh, okay. She does type LOL and says laugh out loud out loud, which is very funny. Which I thought was so funny. And then I had to rewind it because Charlie was working on his computer and I was like, look at that. And he was like, what? And so then I rewound it and then I played it again and I went, isn't that so funny? And he was just like, what?

Speaker: They have to explain to the audience what it means. People don't know what LOL means. Laugh out loud. Um, and that I have a lot of ah lot of notes here about a aim versus text versus email. Yeah, it's just like, why does she this I get text and aim. But like, you don't need text aim and email.

Speaker: Like, just send a message while they're away. It's anyway, too many modes. Anyways, Austin Ames, Chad Michael Murray's character. Has basically the same dad as um ah Freddie Prinze Jr. in She's All That.

Speaker: um He wants him to go to USC and play football. And he wants to go to Princeton. And he hasn't told him about it. Oh, you only want to go to Ivy League schools? you um youre You're upset because you don't want to go to a fancy school that lots of people get rejected from?

Speaker: Yeah, the second worst Ivy League school is too good for you. Oh, no. have

Speaker: no, I have literally no ah no opinions about the Ivy League schools in terms of ranking them. I just wanted to piss people off by saying that. um And it worked.

Speaker: His dad is the car wash king. um His dad is played by a Timu Aaron Eckhart who shows up in a lot of stuff. You're like, is that Aaron Eckhart? No, no, that's not Aaron Eckhart. yeah But um here's the first of Emma's Fun Facts. Emma's Fun Facts. Now I do have to preface this by saying I was not a One Tree Hill girly. Famously, OC girly. You know who was a One Tree Hill girly?

Speaker: Caitlin? Joe Coleman, my father. What? He was a one-to-hilderly? My father grew up in well, he grew up in Hillsboro, but very close to Chapel Hill, North Carolina. And he was a big basketball kid. He played basketball he played basketball in in college until he had to drop out because he had my sister.

Speaker: um But yeah and so when when One Tree Hill came out Which takes place in Chapel Hill North Carolina And about a kid who loves basketball love basketball he was like He really identified with it And he was yeah he would like say hey have you watched One Tree Hill It's really good Yep and he knew all this all the drama My dad I don't know if he watched like Because that show went on forever I don't know if he stayed with it 100% but like I mean my dad and I also like watched Gilmore Girls My dad was a big Gilmore Girls fan too

Speaker: Oh, I love that. but ah But yeah, i I never got into One Tree Hill, but my dad did. We watched Gilmore Girls together, but I never watched One Tree Hill with my dad, other than like maybe an episode. yeah Yeah. um Well, Chad Michael Murray, famously on One Tree Hill. The guy who plays his dad plays Peyton's dad on One Tree Hill. so a little And Peyton as a is is that here Sophia Bush?

Speaker: ah No, that's that's a um curly hair chick that's now married to Negan.

Speaker: i don't know who's I don't know who Negan is, and i and i don't know I don't know who's married to him. Negan from The Walking Dead? Yeah, you're not going to do it with that. Sam and Dean's dad on Supernatural?

Speaker: Oh, a fuck, yeah. um yeah What is that guy's name? Jeffrey Morgan. jeff Jeffrey Dean Morgan. jeffrey de jeffrey de ah You almost said Jeffrey Dahmer.

Speaker: I almost said Jeffrey Donovan. Um, who is from Burn Notice. Oh, yeah. No, Jeffrey Dean Morgan is married to Peyton from One Tree Hill. And she, she comes, she may has like a little... lot older than her.

Speaker: Yeah. Yeah. um i know that he would yeah I know that he dated Mary Louise Parker for a while. um Yes, Hillary Burton. Yeah. Who is 44. Jeffrey Dean Morgan is 60. That's not that bad, I guess. yeah mean it's That's it's a lot, but it's not that bad.

Speaker: Yeah, we're going to ignore it because they're so in love. Sure. Yeah. She played his wife um on Walking Dead in little flashback scenes.

Speaker: Well, that's cute. Yeah. um I don't know anything about The Walking Dead. i You wouldn't think his character is very cute. I've organized my life in a way that I don't have to know anything about The Walking Dead. know too much about The Walking Dead, so I can explain everything to you.

Speaker: So he works at the car he works at his dad's car wash, and no one calls him Car Wash Boy, which is another huge problem I have with this movie. Right! like but also like her car wash in the middle of a drought.

Speaker: Yes, it is. It's a car wash, month and everybody's getting their cars washed. Everyone's getting their cars washed multiple times a day. They are, they're in the same social class. Like her stepmom owns that diner and she works there and everybody makes fun of her like she's poor because they, yeah because you need to for Cinderella. But they didn't write this movie in a way that would make sense for the other students not to like her. There's no...

Speaker: Right? She's very pretty and blonde and normal and rich. And everyone treats her like she's trash for no reason in the movie. yeah Well, she's not rich. stepmom is rich. Yes, but they yeah they don't know that. they They don't know enough about her life to to know that distinction, I promise. there's the way the kids act in this movie is extremely unrealistic to me and like that was my my biggest problem with the movie is like everything that happens with the way the kids interact with each other like it's are you saying that you've never been to a pep rally where they laid out like uh super embarrassing emails for some girl yeah not in any way would that happen ever like where the fuck was lynn shay like lynn shay needed to come in and put a stop to that ah

Speaker: ah um a crazy um so lynn shay appears to be the vice principal or something yeah who also has like a weird relationship with one of the students she has a crush on one of the popular boys which i think is pretty funny She's always like yelling at them. And then she's like, Oh, hi, Ryan. You look nice today. Yeah. It's like, your shirt looks stupid.

Speaker: You sure look stupid. Everything's terrible. Ryan. Yeah. It's pretty funny. Um, Lin Shay, the great Lin Shay, we love her She is a great character actress. Listeners probably know her from the Insidious series. um she She was the like medium character in the first one and then became a bigger and bigger character until the most recent ones are like primarily about her. ah She's also the sister the sister of Bob Shay, the founder of New Line Cinema. um She's in a bunch of horror movies that New Line made as well.

Speaker: Nice. um ah You would know. or You would know where he's Yeah. Yeah. um So, yes. ah Oh, the stepsisters drive ah the the Beatles that came out. i mean beateles Yeah, but like in different colors. Yeah, that they put dirt all over to get Austin Ames to wash them.

Speaker: Yeah, because they so desperately want Austin Ames' attention. But like, yeah, at the beginning, they're totally cool with them both having a crush on him. um Because nobody's getting him yet.

Speaker: Yes. i'm a The stepmom, Fiona, just walks into the diner and takes money directly out of the register, which which is illegal. So illegal. It's not how business works. Regina King is the only person in the entire movie who stands up to her. And is like, the only yeah, go ahead. Yeah, fire me. And this is this place will will disappear and you'll never make any money. But like, I understand how they're making money in the first place because all they sell is salmon.

Speaker: The girls go to the diner Well there's no other things besides salmon It doesn't seem like they're like salmon pancakes Salmon on biscuits Like it's really gross She gives the one guy his like regular order And it's like a bacon egg and cheese With a diet And he's like can I have a diet coke this time And She's like makes a little bit him He's a big There's so many like weight related jokes And like mean stuff There's like Mary Pat Gleason No wonder we all have body issues Mary Pat Gleason, who is a character actor, she's since died, but she played a lot of like, know, she's like a big, like broad-shouldered, tall, bigger woman. Yeah. And she's one of the waitresses there, and they, like, a lot of fun is made of her as well. Yeah.

Speaker: Like, just for her body type. um Yeah. Which is just, like, ridiculous. Yeah, it's ridiculous. Of course we all, oh, oh, and then, and then, ugh. ah The scene that made me want to throw a brick against a wall was like when they're at the dance and they're playing 10 questions and ah he goes, rice cake or Big Mac? And she goes, yeah Big Mac. Why would I want a rice cake? And he just and he goes, well, that eliminates 90% of the female student body. And like, ugh!

Speaker: it's so it's so trashy like that is but and again no wonder that's so 2004 that's so 2004 it was like you you know guys like look like yeah guys like you to eat but like you need to look like you don't eat exactly exactly uh but it's yeah um ah it's such trash um yeah because they could the the the mean girls go to the diner to make fun of her mostly Yeah, They don't eat anything. And she's like, I'm never going to find anything on the Zone diet here. like, well, why did you come here, you bitch? Right, right. The Zone. Remember the Zone? Right.

Speaker: Oh, my God, the Zone. Remember the South Beach diet? The South Beach diet, Zone diet, Atkins. Oh, my God. Yeah, the Mediterranean. There's million of them. Yeah. yeah um And then we get the famous exchange where she is ordering and she goes, what can I get here that has and no fat and no sugar or no sugar, no carbs and is fat free? And Hilary Duff goes, water.

Speaker: yeah um She... um Oh yeah. So we have Carter who is honestly maybe the best part of the movie. um Yeah. the He really is. He's, he just wants to be an actor and he's yeah constantly being a method actor.

Speaker: He's yeah, he's got auditions. And so he's dressed up it as different like teenage tropes in every scene pretty much, which is pretty good. um And he's very, he's very charming and like a pretty good actor. um The guy's name is Dan, but Dan Boyd, I think he's been in a lot of stuff. Most famously in EZA. Yeah, he's great in EZA.

Speaker: Yes, he is. um But um yes, so moving on. um There's the Halloween costume montage. It's Halloween night is the homecoming dance, which also, is too it's too late for homecoming. And also the homecoming game is like two weeks after the homecoming dance, which doesn't make any so sense. Homecoming dance is the night of homecoming.

Speaker: That's the point of the homecoming is that yeah people, alumni come home to the game and then there's the dance. Yep. Nope. Nope, nope, nope. Don't worry about it.

Speaker: Doesn't make sense. I wonder if the screenwriter of this movie was homeschooled because she does not understand seem to understand how high school works at all. Yep. Well, I can tell you that Hilary Duff was homeschooled and so she had to do some research into how to portray a high school loser. Yeah, there you go.

Speaker: um So I wrote Rhonda, but I think youre i think it maybe it is Rhoda as Regina King. Yeah. um she has a wedding dress that she was saving. For whatever reason, which like, it's okay. So we have the montage where Hillary Duff. So the whole thing is that Hillary Duff and um Chad Malcolm Larry have been exchanging. Right, right, right, right. And he's just like, I think we should meet. And she's like, you sure? And he's like, yeah, we should meet.

Speaker: um at the homecoming dance I'll be in the middle of the dance floor and that's how you know it's me and she's like I don't know I guess and so she tries to go to the dance but then Jennifer Coolidge is like no you have to work tonight and so she's like well fuck and so she has to work because she has to get money for Princeton which apparently Jennifer Coolidge is like basically holding her tuition money hostage She thinks that Jennifer Coolidge will let her go to a very expensive school, which she should know that Jennifer Coolidge would never in a million years do that. yeah But so she is never fighting back and letting Jennifer Coolidge and the stepsisters walk all over her. She does their homework yeah all in the hopes that they will pay for Princeton. Now we should say that...

Speaker: um And Charlie would know more about this than me, ah probably, even though I did go to law school at the Good Wife yeah the University. academy me Yeah, yeah, yeah. That's not how wills work.

Speaker: ah That was the first thing he said. You can't, like, he doesn't have a will, and so the money went to his wife instead of his daughter, and that's not how that works. That's not, she would get the money.

Speaker: He first thought it was his girlfriend and he was like, that's not how wills work. And then he was like, oh it's his wife. Okay. Maybe. I don't know. Um, potentially. I don't think the money, not in California, especially because it would be in probate. Right.

Speaker: have no idea. I, i um, yeah it doesn't matter. Yeah. You went to law school. I did not. yeah. ah Just in case this your first episode, I definitely didn't go to law school, but I did watch all seven seasons of The Good Wife, which I refer to being the same thing.

Speaker: Yeah, and I definitely went to medical school at the Pitt Academy, so you're welcome. Same, same. You're welcome. We have...

Speaker: Oh yeah, you were explaining the plot of the movie. So the plot of the movie, you know. And so they're doing, they we of course have to have like an outfit montage. And so Hilary Duff's at work and Rhoda is just like, what are you still doing here? And EZA comes in and he's just like, her like, her secret admirer that she's been texting, and nobody thinks this is problematic, even though this is the 2000s and we all know Stranger Danger.

Speaker: um they're all just like encouraging it like oh you've been messaging with a stranger on the internet absolutely this is definitely someone you go to school with um and ah so she's like well of course you have to go to the dance like screw the work go to the dance and she's like yeah i should stand up for myself i should go to the dance and she's like i can't go to the dance i don't have an outfit and she goes oh well let's go to the town costume store ahhu um And they go to the town costume store right as it's closing. And Rhoda's just like, I'll give you free breakfast for a week. And he goes, make it a month. We've got a deal. And so they go in and we have a little costume montage of trying to find Hilary Duff an outfit for the the Halloween dance. And nothing's working because she's picking all the worst outfits, including a porky pig, full costume like furry costume a suit of armor

Speaker: um and a bunch of other bizarre things and then rhoda's just staring she's like we're we're at a lot it is i looked it up it is ronda Oh, it's Rhonda. And Rhonda is like, we're at a loss. I don't know what to do. And she looks down into the case that she's leaning on and she sees a little white masquerade mask, like teeniest, tiniest little mask there ever a white domino mask. Yeah. Yeah. It's so small. um And she goes, hey, let me see that mask. And and what's his name? It runs the store. He don't have anything to match it. I just have this mask. She goes, don't worry.

Speaker: I got this. And so then They go, and I'm also confused as to like what time this dance starts because like it's been nighttime for like 18 hours. They get there at 11, Carter says. Okay.

Speaker: but So she goes over to Rhonda's house. Rhonda brings out a box and she goes, I was hoping to save this for the next time i was going to try going down the aisle to make it down the aisle, which alludes to the fact that she almost got married at some point.

Speaker: However, the dress is in a clean and preserved box, which you only do once you've worn the dress. And you've gotten married. Anyone that's like, I don't know anyone that like bought a dress and then the mayor the wedding went through, kept the dress and paid the money to get it cleaned and preserved. Like that's expensive. And you only really do that if you have, as someone that works in the bridal industry, like you only do that if you have worn the dress and it is something of sentimental value to you. And she's just like, here's this dress. Let's ruin $500 worth of cleaning and preserving. And here you go, teen. Why don't you wear it to your dance? yeah um

Speaker: And it's a beautiful dress. it is that That style is making a comeback right now in bridal, I will say. Yeah, lots tulle. Lots of tulle, drop waist, sparkle, and lace. um I have to say...

Speaker: At this point, my brain was like, I'm going to choose the screenwriter side in this moment. And I'm going to come up with a backstory that they didn't have time to go into Rhonda. Okay, sure. Yeah. um I'm going to assume that Rhonda at one point was married.

Speaker: She wore that dress. Yeah. Her fiance died. Died. Yeah. i Died. Died. Before she could get down the aisle. She paid to get it cleaned and preserved because she loved this man so, so much. So, so, so much. And the dress.

Speaker: And the dress. So she paid to get it preserved. And she was just waiting for the moment that someone. Maybe she didn't even pay to have it preserved. Maybe she gave the the people who do that ah free breakfast for a month exchange. That's very true. And they just did it. Exactly. um Apparently, we we live in a bartering society. in barter town. Yeah.

Speaker: A barter town. um and And so she's been holding on to this dress from her dead fiance. And she's going to allow Hilary Duff wear it. Or maybe, maybe, oh, even better.

Speaker: Maybe she was in a secret relationship with Hilary Duff's dad. And Hilary Duff's dad was going to leave Jennifer Coolidge for Ronda. For Ronda, yeah. And she got a dress. And they were going to elope.

Speaker: And it was going to be magical. But then he died in the 1994. Jennifer Coolidge murdered him and during the earthquake. Yes. Exactly. Great time to murder somebody during an earthquake. That requires time a lot of planning that is impossible, though. Yes.

Speaker: You got to plan for a um near impossible world natural disaster. um But if you keep, see, this is why you keep a bunch of stuff in your back pocket. So if the occasion ever arises.

Speaker: You're just ready to murder. Yeah. You're just ready to murder. Should a natural disaster present itself. Bada bing, bada boom. This has been another episode of my least favorite murder with Emma and Katie. Yeah.

Speaker: My least favorite murder. Listen murder, murderobos or whatever they're called. Murderinos. I know. No, we can't call them that. That's what that podcast called. Oh, yeah. Murderobos. I like murderobos because it makes me think of motorboating robots.

Speaker: It makes me think of oboes that kill people.

Speaker: oh man anyways so now that we've rewritten so she goes to the dance she goes to the dance um very recognizable she looks exactly like hillary duff except that her hair isn't flat ironed into oblivion and she has a teeny tiny little mask on she has a teeny tiny little domino mask on and she comes in the stairs and everybody's immediately obsessed with her like you see her every day Yeah. And, and this is diner girl. I mean, it's not really, it is not the makeover change that we get. And she's all that where she takes out the ponytail and takes out the glasses and you're like completely different person. This is like, you throw some makeup on, you curl the hair and, Oh, Hey, that's the girl from Spanish class. She looks nice.

Speaker: Yes, exactly. Which is what happens at dances. Like one hundred percent. You're like, Oh yeah, look good. Good for her. You know, that's what actually happens at dances. um so after a brief moment with Simon Helberg, who's dressed as Neo from the Matrix. Yep.

Speaker: um She thinks that he's the guy very briefly. Because Chad Michael Murray doesn't follow his own instructions. That's true. 11 o'clock. She's at the dance. She goes to the middle of the dance floor. There's like a little spotlight. She's standing there in her tool bubble and ah just stand like going around in circles waiting for Nomad to appear. And ah it's so it's I have to imagine it's like 1110 at this point. And he is not in the middle of the dance floor. And so ah Big Bang Theory, he shoots a shot.

Speaker: Yeah. Yeah. And he's ah he's a weirdo freak. Yeah. And um then she realizes that it is Austin Ames. And he, like, they have this little scene together. He tells her that... um That he doesn't want to be the person everyone sees him as. Like he had like written poetry for her on their chats and stuff. And like she, you know, she's surprised that it's him because he's, he hangs out with a bunch of evil teenagers. Yeah. And he's captain of the football team.

Speaker: Yes. He's captain the football team, but he says he wants to be somebody else. that He asked her 10 questions. I said, girls who eat was very 2004. Yeah.

Speaker: Meanwhile, one of his asshole friends ah attempts to sexually assault Shelby Cummings. Right? And Carter- Another 2004 moment where we just are going to glaze over the sexual assault. And just make big deal. And she's still friends with she's still friends with him. Yeah. Carter, dressed as Zorro, fights the guy and knocks him unconscious and then starts making out with Shelby Cummings at the dance.

Speaker: Yeah. um Meanwhile... But also, his face is also in a teeny tiny mask. But at least he has mustache. Yeah. He looks exactly like himself. Yes, he looks exactly like himself. um Austin and Sam go to a fire trap of a gazebo where they have lit candles hanging all over it. It's insane. On this wooden gazebo in the middle of a drought. No one is there, but there is a trio of acoustic guitar and violin and a tambourine player and presumably Edwin McCain who shows up to sing his hit from a decade ago, I'll Be.

Speaker: I'll be I'll be Yeah like a lot of the songs You're putting a little creed on there but yeah I'll A lot of the songs utilized in this movie I remember being surprised when this movie came out um and being like this song?

Speaker: Yeah, it's not good. It's not a good soundtrack. I have to imagine that they didn't have money for modern pop music because like the music that they play during the dance when everyone's supposed to be dancing is, again, it is similar to what the camp episode.

Speaker: Basically just the song Titus Andromedon plays. Just generic hip hop. I beat that bitch with a bat. I beat that bitch with a bat.

Speaker: Um, he is about to remove her mask when her phone, which is attached to her shoe. yep Alarm goes off. It's midnight. They have to get back to the diner because that is when Fiona is going to pick her up from the diner and she has to be there. Yes.

Speaker: The stepsisters are dressed as conjoined cats. Um, ah They were supposed to be Siamese cats, but one of them lost the memo and they made them Siamese twin cats. Yes, exactly. It's very funny.

Speaker: she's voted homecoming queen. Like, yeah, that's not how homecoming queen works. It's not how it works. Well, queen is voted before the dance. You can't, how did they organize a vote at the dance? Like, how did that happen? Was it show of hands? Was it a plazo meter? That's not how it works.

Speaker: Well, that's the thing is they take, they say it early at the beginning of the dance, which is the students don't pick homecoming king or queen. The teachers do based on costume. Yeah.

Speaker: Oh, well I missed that. So that's also stupid. The teachers, the two teachers that are there, which is our main vice principal lady and then lynchingng the football coach. Yeah. um Because there's only two teachers in this school. um Well, there's another guy who's always dropping stuff on himself, who's another character actor who has no lines in this movie. Yes. ah And they, they're the ones, they are just picking who has the best costume. It's basically a costume contest for them. And that's how they're going to pick- They do not have the best costumes. Like those are not the best costumes there. Yeah. Yeah. I mean, honestly, the Siamese cat costume is pretty impressive.

Speaker: Right. The Three Musketeers is pretty good. Charlie's Angels is pretty good. Yeah. Yeah. At one point I see ah like there's someone in like a full freaking suit, like sort of thing. I can't remember what sort of character suit it is, but I remember seeing that and being like, whoa, buddy, that seems uncomfortable. Yeah. Yeah.

Speaker: um So the thing about Sam is that she's a fucking idiot. yeah And repeatedly throughout this, she's like, I'm not going to tell him who I am. Like, I just can't. Like, I don't know. He won't see me. He's going to think I'm just a diner girl. Yeah. um ah The stepsister, she goes, I'm doing him a favor if I just disappear. um There's a car chase. The stepsisters see her and they're trying to get Fiona to beat them to the diner. Yeah. um And Carter's trying to keep his dad's Mercedes from getting hurt. And of course, a giant sign falls on and it destroys it. Yeah. I will say, so the Charlie's Corner of this movie is Charlie's Corner, Charlie's Corner, Charlie's Corner. Hi, governor.

Speaker: uh the entire scene where during the car chase uh when carter is driving like just following all the road rules uh in his dad's mercedes so that he doesn't ruin the car and he's just like being so careful um everything that came out of his mouth charlie would then turn and look at me and go see You see? Because at one point she's just like, I'm so sorry. i know that you need to, you want to take care of your dad's car, but I really need you to step on it, Carter. He goes, I'm going 38 in a 35.

Speaker: And Charlie looks over at me and he goes, yeah. Yeah. and then This loser nerd that ah is wrong in this situation, that's who you want to emulate Charles?

Speaker: Exactly. And then at one point, there's a yellow light and that he totally could have gone through. And Hilary Duff's like, you could have totally made that. And he goes, it's yellow. Yellow means slow down, not speed up, which is something Charlie says all the time. That sounds very annoying.

Speaker: There...

Speaker: um cinderella dropped her phone of course yeah that's instead of her shoe um ah madeline though they go to the diner and she has put on a a t-shirt on over the front of her dress and her hat and has pretended like she's been there the whole time and all of the people working their cover for her yeah the steps the stepsisters find out that it's austin ames and that they find out um That she's Cinderella. That she's Cinderella. Because everybody's trying to find out who Cinderella is. He's put up signs everywhere like who's Cinderella. And the stepsisters are going to ruin it. And they get all the printouts of the emails.

Speaker: Well, first, they pretend to be her at the car wash. But because they don't realize that the other one's trying to do that. so like Right. They're against each other. Yeah. Yeah. So like one of the twins is like, why are you not like writing my paper? And like, can you make it sound more like me? Because my teachers are so all so confused why I sound so smart on my papers. And then when I'm not on paper, not smart. And she's like, woof.

Speaker: And so then she like stupidly walks away from her computer with her evil stepsister in her room. Of course, her evil stepsister is going to go through her computer. And she finds out that Austin Ames is, uh, is the prince and she's Cinderella. And then ah the other twin overhears all of this yeah because she's saying everything out loud. And so they both,

Speaker: memorize one of the text messages or emails to repeat it back to Austin Ames to prove that they're Cinderella. But they mess it up because they catch each other both trying to do it at the same time and they get into a huge fight.

Speaker: Yes. Which, and he asked them, so what did Cinderella drop? um Which they don't know. And so that's how he knows it's not them. Also because they look nothing like Nothing!

Speaker: Including the height. Yeah. Yeah, Madeline Zima is like 5'10". Yes. And the other one is like four eleven Yes, they're, it's so stupid. They're supposed to be twins. They look absolutely nothing alike, which I guess is supposed to be a joke.

Speaker: Yeah, yeah. um There's this, yeah that there there's a whole thing where they get all these girls who are claiming to be Cinderella. None of them, like he can't tell from body type or from voice or from their face that it's not her. It's very stupid. He's face blindness. He's got big old face blindness.

Speaker: um ah there's a he goes to see her at the diner where somebody is covering ah come feel my love uh which adele would cover a few years later and make a big hit but this is before that um yeah bob dylan song um he can he has this whole conversation with her at the diner and doesn't recognize her Voice or face or anything. Yeah. And she's like, it's slipping him hints. Very not subtly. She's like, yeah, like you're wearing a mask.

Speaker: Yes. Yes. And she's about to tell him and she gets interrupted, which happens a few times. She's about to tell him. And then Fiona screams at her. yeah. the The stepsisters go and tell Shelby and the other mean girls that like it was all a plan to get them broken up and that you know Sam organized this whole thing. um cause She's really evil.

Speaker: yeah Also, Carter goes to see Shelby and is like, hey, I'm Zorro. And she's like, no, that's that I can't be seen in public with you. this is ah That's never going to happen in a million years, which is, of course, what would happen in real life. Yeah. um He's having a crisis. um The stepsisters at the pep rally have this whole thing where they they announce this and read the emails and everyone starts making fun of her and nobody puts a stop to it.

Speaker: Everybody's screaming, like chanting diner girl. Like what you don't, know you don't have high school jobs. Like none of this is realistic at all. It's all very ridiculous. Like you're trying to put Cinderella onto a current high school current at the time, high school like backdrop, like milieu, if you'll forgive There's some things that require some adjustment and this movie didn't come up with any creative solutions to any of those things really. No, it didn't. uh it thought that it did but it didn't and uh like the whole thing that everyone like starts laughing and being like yeah sam's really a loser is they read her email where she's just like i've never kissed a boy before yeah which is uncommon for 17 but again like but like okay yeah

Speaker: Um, so yeah, also Fiona finds the Princeton acceptance letter and gets rid of it and yeah find and and creates a fake Princeton rejection letter for her. Yep.

Speaker: and gives it to her the same day insanely cruel yeah it's just so cool she's like you can work at the diner forever ya and she's just like what the fuck my life is falling apart yeah um and austin austin is a fucking coward and doesn't deserve her he's a like fucking coward he doesn't say a goddamn word during that pat probably doesn't talk to her afterward not a thing like yeah what a loser um He fucking sucks. Um, I wrote Regina King is the only reasonable adult in the movie. Um...

Speaker: Rhonda tells her that she and the waitresses are her family and they have faith in her but she needs to have faith in herself this is when she stands up for herself against Fiona tells her fuck you I quit the job I quit this family I'm moving out Rhonda says she can live with her all the staff and customers walk out of the restaurant too I love that the customers walk out too because they're like this you suck we're only here for those people um At the football game, like, the homecoming game is this much at later after the dance? I know. She confronts him in the locker room. She's like, you're a coward. You're pretending to be someone you're not. I feel sorry for you, which is good for her at least. Yeah. And then iconic line.

Speaker: Waiting for you is like waiting for rain in this drought. Oh, iconic. Iconic. I don't know about that. That t-shirt level.

Speaker: I don't know about that. um ah She goes to the game with Carter. um Austin's dad is on the field with him. ah Yeah, because Austin's dad, the whole thing is that Austin's dad really wants him to go to USC so he can play football and then graduate from USC and then um go and manage the um car wash car washshed with him, which I'm just like, that seems like a very expensive degree just to have your son manage. Well, I think he wants.

Speaker: I think he wants his son to be a college football star for like marketing for the car wash maybe. Oh, okay. Okay. But again, like, cool. Cause then later he's like embraced Princeton and like the car washes, like gives discounts to Princeton alums and stuff. Yeah. Yeah.

Speaker: It's just like, okay. um But he's like so damn sad. And like at the pep rally, his dad is there and his dad is sitting behind him. And as they're like reading the the text messages and he's just like, I don't want to go to USC and play football. I want to go to Princeton and be a writer. The entire time he's like, Austin, what is this?

Speaker: Austin, what is this? Austin, what are they talking about? Like constantly. Yeah. um ah They're on the football field. Jimmy Eat World Ballad starts playing. yeah um She's leaving and then he walks off the field and his dad is like, you're throwing away your dream. And he's like, no, dad, I'm throwing away your dream.

Speaker: Iconic, baby. They kiss. It starts to rain. And I said a bit a belabored metaphor, my favorite kind. Yes. They find the will in the fairy tale book.

Speaker: Yeah. Apparently. apparently Fiona knew about like, why wouldn't she just destroy it? If she knew about it, destroy it she knows how to destroy like important documents. She does. this to the thats letterter It seems like the stepsisters tell her that she got into Princeton. It's kind of glazed over. yeah So they get all the money. They force. Okay. First of all, why would Regina King want the stepmother and stepsisters to work in the diner? They are only going to make it harder for her. yeah she doesn't want She doesn't want that. She wants to hire competent people. It's better to hire competent people than to hire people as some sort of punishment.

Speaker: Exactly. It is because they're not going to work hard at all. They're going to be a big old thorn in your side. It seems like working there is a liability, I wrote. And then the best thing that happens in this movie, my favorite thing that happens in this movie, by far. So...

Speaker: We forgot to mention her early on, but there is this hot emo girl who does the announcements at school. She DJs the homecoming dance. She's always like, she's very like anti-authority and the principal keeps cutting her off. she's the drought announcement. Don't only you flush for number two.

Speaker: Yeah, this cool leftist emo chick who's like a tertiary character. So in this and this like montage at the end, we have Carter and Shelby and like, Shelby had like, everybody's turned on, you know, Fiona and everybody likes Sam now. And Shelby like tries to like get- Well, it's cause Carter books a commercial.

Speaker: And he books a local commercial. Yes. Oh, I think it's a national commercial. A national commercial. Yeah. And so they wheeled in the TV on wheels from into the library, and they're all watching the commercial. And he's standing there. Everyone's co clapping. And Shelby goes in to like be like, hey, I'm interested in you now. And he goes, ah no, thank you. And then he goes and puts his arm around emo girl. Yeah, I cheered when that happened. I did, too. Yeah.

Speaker: They ah wouldn't be the coolest couple ever to walk the earth if he wasn't gay. Right. Yes, yes, yes. Yes. um Maybe she's gay too. Maybe it's an arrangement. Who knows? it Maybe they're both bi.
