Introduction to Fish Oil and Inflammation

00:00:11
chrisyzen
Fish oil lowers inflammation. While technically true, let's examine how it lowers inflammation. So polyunsaturated fatty acids
00:00:25
chrisyzen
you may be interested to learn have actually been studied and used in the context ah in the context of organ transplantation, right? So back in the day,
00:00:42
chrisyzen
they would actually give organ donor with organ transplantees, right? The people that received the donated organ, like a kidney or whatever else.
00:00:58
chrisyzen
they would give them polyunsaturated fats in order to suppress the immune system so that the body doesn't reject the transplanted organ.

Fish Oil: Immune Suppression and Risks

00:01:09
chrisyzen
So they've studied and used omega-3s particularly, so EPA and DHA, but also omega-6 fatty acids. Okay. So That, when I found that out, I was shocked because we were always told, you know, oh, you you know, take take the fish out, to lower your inflammation.
00:01:36
chrisyzen
And um how does how does the fish oil lower our inflammation? By suppressing our immune system. it's It's not the right way to lower inflammation. Because a suppressed immune system, first of all, it can allow for various overgrowth, fungal, candida, and others otherwise to you know proliferate. But in a more longer-term view, that's a suppressed immune system can allow cancer cancer to proliferate and on a pulse. So I don't really think, now knowing now what I know about omega-3s, I don't really think this is the right way to lower our inflammation.

Personal Journey and Research on Fish Oil

00:02:24
chrisyzen
Right um This was this was a hard this was I'll be honest with you. This was a hard one for me to swallow I Spent months kind of digging and trying to you know, sleeping on it just kind of trying to process. How could I have been duped?
00:02:41
chrisyzen
and how could an entire, because not not only is fish oil big in medicine now, but even in sort of naturopathic circles, natural medicine, every, oh my God, in my um my textbook of natural medicine, there's a massive chapter on fish oil and like every second chapter in there, they're talking about, yeah, yeah, and the fish oil to lower the inflammation will help this condition and that condition. And when you think about it, yeah, of course, lowering inflammation Short term, we'll have a ah will show a benefit if the immune system is deranged or dysregulated, but it's very similar to how people are given these um corticosteroids, right the steroids, also known as glucocorticoids. These are cortisone mimicking chemicals, right like hydrocortisone,
00:03:33
chrisyzen
um couu or not to butterol ah I can't remember some of the the actual brand names that are very common so yeah those are like for asthma for eczema skin conditions for psoriasis for rheumatoid arthritis just for anything almost they've they've they' they're using so many different conditions like almost anything You go to the doctor with they could always make a case to throw in this one of these and they call it an anti-inflammatory. And it's true that cortisol is our own endogenous anti-inflammatory. But again, it does that by suppressing the immune system. So this is a very a short. It's a short term fix.
00:04:16
chrisyzen
that can lead to a host of long-term

00:04:19
chrisyzen
problems. So Omega-3s, fish oil, yes they do lower inflammation, but they do that by suppressing the immune system. And we have much better ways to lower inflammation, right? That's the stuff I do with my clients.
00:04:34
chrisyzen
And we also, while lowering inflammation, we also work on the factors that are causing the person to have, you know, more inflammation that they would like, right? So it's it's not just lowering the inflammation with a supplement.
00:04:52
chrisyzen
You also wanna work on the factors that are causing the inflammation to be increased, right? But again, and look, we were eating a lot of cod liver, like I'd get it in the cans, and I would like dole it out to my family and my dog, and then I'd get the the cans, the fish eggs, fish roe, hake roe to be specific. They were delicious. my My kid loved them. She had a ton of them ah after she was, you know, we started weaning her stuff.
00:05:23
chrisyzen
And we were reading them a lot ah hell of a lot for for a while. So it was it was a hard it this was a hard one for me. It was probably one of the hardest things to get over because I had to face my wife once again with something that I you know initially I was like, oh my God, this is the best thing ever. We got to really get that into you, get it into you, Cynthia. And and then not and so now, excuse me so now when I started introducing new things into our you know routine, I'm a lot more cautious these days and I test them out on myself first.
00:06:02
chrisyzen
Really really research things a lot more thoroughly before before then tell my wife. Okay, this is good I've looked into it properly and stuff like that. And yeah moral not

Rejecting Fish Oil: Personal and Professional Standpoint

00:06:14
chrisyzen
moral. Sorry, but in conclusion, I will never ever ever Eat my life
00:06:23
chrisyzen
take a fish oil supplement. That's the last thing I would do. I wouldn't take cod liver oil, although it's better than then the fish oil supplements. A lot of that is waste from the fishing industry. you know It's like the whey protein. They just re-marketed waste to us, basically.
00:06:41
chrisyzen
um So yeah, so cod liver oil is more of a whole food, right? So I don't feel so bad because most of the the Omega-3s we were getting were from ah cod liver in the actual livers with the oil and um you know those hay crows. And we're eating fish like a couple of times a week because we live by the ocean and stuff.
00:07:02
chrisyzen
But um we we didn't use a lot of the fish oil supplements, a few bottles of cod liver over the last eight years, whatever. But I will never again supplement that. And I ah stopped all my clients last year from taking them. At first, when I found out the first thing, I was like, oh my God, how am I going to break this to my clients?
00:07:25
chrisyzen
So the first thing I ah did is I just told everybody when I'd meet them for for one-to-ones, I just tell, okay, you know that fish hole thing? ah The Omega-3 is just put that in the fridge for now. Let's pause that for a while. And then after a month would pass, i then I'd tell them, you know oh, by the way, you know that thing, you can throw it out. And here's why. And a lot of my clients, they they understand that there's a lot of sort of messed up incentives in the health and nutrition space.
00:07:52
chrisyzen
So a lot of them are very, or most of my clients pretty much are awake to to all of this nonsense. So I just told them, look, I learned that this is this is probably not needed. It's probably doing more harm than good in most people.

Concerns About Omega Fatty Acids

00:08:08
chrisyzen
And here's the thing. If you have a lot of these Omega 3s in your body, they are actually more fragile than the Omega 6s. And that's why Omega 6s are not good.
00:08:17
chrisyzen
because they're very fragile, so they peroxidize very easily by exposure to oxygen, reactive oxygen species, you know' free radicals, UV light, radiation, stress in general, and heat, and obviously oxygen, as I mentioned.
00:08:33
chrisyzen
so and we're very hot like humans are you know 98.6 degrees so they're very susceptible to damage and the omega-3s are even more polyunsaturated even longer even more fragile so they have even more potential to to be peroxidized and broken down into these carcinogenic mutagenic aldehydes and other molecules so you don't want to be You don't want to have a lot of them in your tissues because you could have a lot a lot of them and then and like so the Omega-6s get peroxidized and then they they damage these guys or vice versa. So you have a lot of, it's almost like you have sticks of dynamite all over in your cells and then one one spark can light one fuse and then that can cause a chain reaction of explosions that kind of way. So you want to get these things out of your diet, out of your body and protect yourself along the way.
00:09:28
chrisyzen
and there's better ways Again, there's better ways to lower inflammation, there's better ways to to actually like live and eat and supplement so that your inflammation is lower right rather than suppressing that which makes inflammation, which is your immune system.
00:09:43
chrisyzen
okay so that is a quick one i'll probably do a whole episode on this at some point in the future once i get all the get around to it um but is this same this one is very important i would i would and i'm not giving you advice or anything but i would if you were using an if a hypothetical person that i was not giving advice to was using omega 3s I would hypothetically tell them to throw them in the bin and never ever get them again and never look back. That's what I would tell, ah let's say it was a friend or something like that, you know. So thank you for watching or listening and I'll see you on the next episode.
