Eden & Briana: What's up, bitches? I can tell you what's down. What's down? yeah Never mind. We have a... What? I was thinking about cat anyway. we have a ah We have a closet podcast today.

Eden & Briana: I think we did have her last episode too. I think was too. And she stayed in there whole night. Well, we forgot to shut the door. Because we left the blanket. Are reach over and shut the door?

Eden & Briana: do you think it'll be okay? I think it'll be fine. We do have a house full children. Ah, true. Hang on. a And they are not quiet. No, they are not. They do not know what that means.

Eden & Briana: So I and try to enjoy the chaos while I can because I know it's going to be gone in a blink of an eye. But still.

Eden & Briana: Yes. I go totally agree with that. I love their laughter. I love all the things. But that what is that laugh? That one that that demonic.

Eden & Briana: big it Is it Bart Simpson? why I don't know. sir Who? The one that Eli does. Oh, I don't know. I don't know. Oh, it's SpongeBob. Oh, yeah. It's SpongeBob. SpongeBob.

Eden & Briana: Yep. I would like to give him a fleshy in the toilet when he does that really bad. It makes me jump every time. Yeah, he does it all the time when he's here.

Eden & Briana: He does not do it at home. He knows better. Yes, he does. oh Anyway, welcome back, bitches. Yeah, it's been a minute.

Eden & Briana: A month. Yeah. ba So today we're doing a twofer. A twofer. not Well, there's more than one reason we're doing a twofer. I am sick of one of the cases.

Eden & Briana: I worked on it so long and did so much research. And then I got tired of the research. I got tired of the story. I just... Blech.

Eden & Briana: Blech. ah So I'm totally burnt out on that. Yep. And the second one is subpar, but... It's the story. ah There's not a lot of research in that one. So we just thought we'd throw two in. A twofer.

Eden & Briana: twofer.

Eden & Briana: What do you got for True Crime News? Well, I'm going to give you the first. I'll give you the first one right now. And then when we jump into the second story, I'll give you that one. Because even though this is from like however long ago I have been working on this case.

Eden & Briana: I don't want you to get any ideas off of this. None. Okay. So in Albuquerque, New Mexico, and I don't know how many months ago this was because, you know, there's that. 49-year-old Leroy Vallejos is charged with killing and dismembering his 69-year-old mother and storing her remains in a freezer.

Eden & Briana: the F? Don't get any ideas. That's where I'm saying. That's where I was going with that. You're not going to dismember me and put me in a deep freeze, are you? no Okay. But oh my gosh, it reminds me of a story.

Eden & Briana: um When Papa passed and I flew down to New Mexico to help Gran pack up her camper and whatever. And we were going to head up to Minnesota for a week and then come home.

Eden & Briana: We were packing and we were... you know, getting rid of stuff out of the fridge. Well, it's hot in New Mexico. Uh-huh. And do you know what happens when a can of biscuits

Eden & Briana: sits in the heat for 10, 15 minutes? Do you know what happens? I'm assuming you yell. It goes pop. yeah And I'm assuming you guys probably all tried to hit the deck. Oh, we did.

Eden & Briana: We covered our ears and we dropped down and I was like, God, we're getting shot.

Eden & Briana: yes we we Nobody was around. So I'm like, I'll go peek outside. And then it was just silence. And then we just kind of, once we kind of came down off of our adrenaline rush, we looked in the trash can and there was an open can of biscuits.

Eden & Briana: Oh my God. I could just see the two of you. Oh my god. i would Mind you, I was pregnant at the time. i was gonna say, weren't you pretty pregnant at that time? Yeah, I was like three months along.

Eden & Briana: I was, i was, I just had a little tiny bump, but holy shite. Oh, that's hilarious. Anyways. So anyway, there's that.

Eden & Briana: Uh, are we, what are we doing today? I'm glad you asked. Finally. It took a minute. Well, I didn't know if we were going to do December awareness, but I think we might have did that in the last one. No, because that was in November. But no, we're not because guess who forgot? Okay. So Merry Christmas.

Eden & Briana: Happy New Year. You'll get January's awareness December. It's like, just look out for Santa and don't let the deer shit on your head as they're flying over. Yep. Yeah. Okay, so for this episode, we're going to go to Thornton, Colorado to the year 2017.

Eden & Briana: Oh, that's like five years ago. Yeah, this one's... Or, no. 70? ah Almost nine. Almost nine. Yeah, it's relatively new. We should not try to math when we're tired either. I know.

Eden & Briana: I'm sitting here, because it's going to be 2026. Holy crap But 2017 seems like just yesterday. It does. It really, truly does.

Eden & Briana: That's the year that I moved to town. Ew. Right, ew. Nobody wants to live in town. but if you have No offense to the people that love it.

Eden & Briana: I'm just, I'm not. I can't, people. I don't like people and I'm just, I'm a country girl. I want to be in the country. My husband, complete opposite.

Eden & Briana: He's a golf freak. Okay. So anyway, anyway so few happenings in 2017 included Donald Trump's inauguration as U.S. president, a historic solar eclipse across the United States,

Eden & Briana: And a, quote, unite the right, unquote, rally in Charlottesville, Virginia turned violent, leading to one death. You okay?

Eden & Briana: Yeah, I burped. Oh. Sorry. I just trying to be quiet about it. What are you doing? Fashion trends included backless shoes, distressed jeans, florals, ruffles,

Eden & Briana: Why do my S's sound funny? It sounds like I'm stuck or something.

Eden & Briana: Off the shoulder shirts, fanny packs, and side bags. I know why. There's a lot of S's in that freaking paragraph. I was going to say, there's a lot of Do you remember any of that shit?

Eden & Briana: Oh, yeah. stuff Shit stuff. S's. Oh, God. Hot mess express train all aboard. That train left the station years ago, lovey. I know.

Eden & Briana: The day I was born. They got about 20 feet down and they kicked us out because it was too much. Right? Mm-hmm. Sorry, I had to wet my whiskel.

Eden & Briana: So on June 7, 2017, Katie Zelmer was living every parent's worst nightmare. Wrong page. There we go.

Eden & Briana: Her son, 15-year-old Aiden Zelmer, and her 10-year-old boyfriend's daughter didn't return home after leaving for a walk around 7 p.m.

Eden & Briana: is when they left. And they're 15? 15 and 10. Did I not say 10? Yes, her 10-year-old boyfriend's daughter.

Eden & Briana: So he's 15, but she's only 10.

Eden & Briana: Okay. and I was just going to say, why are we letting a 10-year-old out at 7? i Those would be things that I would question myself, but...

Eden & Briana: Well, I can't say that because I know how the story goes. But she was with a 15-year-old, and where they're at in Colorado, maybe it's not dark at 7. Maybe. i mean, who knows?

Eden & Briana: It might not be like here where it's four o'clock and dark already. Right. So there there could be many, several reasons, but speaking from knowing how this goes, but still i should it should have never freaking happened. Yes, absolutely. And that is a legit question.

Eden & Briana: In more ways than one, my child, in more ways than one. So Katie did exactly what most of us would do in this situation. I have a few things to say about that too.

Eden & Briana: She jumped in her car and went looking, you know, looking for them in all, you know, after she checked all the places just before midnight,

Eden & Briana: she called 911 and reported the kids missing. By this time they had been gone for five hours. I'm sorry if my 10-year-old wasn't in the house by 8 o'clock.

Eden & Briana: I'd have lost my shit. Did they say where they were going or what they They were going to a store. A store? What store? I can't remember the name. What time will you be back? Right.

Eden & Briana: All the things. What route are you taking? Mm-hmm.

Eden & Briana: Yep. Okay. And the mom's mom was at home, correct? Yep. Okay. Got it. So, good questions.

Eden & Briana: Police came to their house to obviously collect more information. And while Katie is providing that information, her phone rings and it's Kaya's dad. Now Kaya is the 10-year-old.

Eden & Briana: And her dad's name is Jacoby. And he had continued searching for the kids while she was talking to the police. And he told Katie that he had found Aiden, but not Kaya.

Eden & Briana: Hmm. they proceeded to Aiden was dropped off at home and the search for Kaya continued. Now,

Eden & Briana: I didn't put all of this in here because like I said, I'd had enough of this case. This is the one I totally shut down on and for many, many reasons.

Eden & Briana: Students and students, parents of students were congregating at the school to try help search for this little girl. It was a big freaking deal. And I also didn't put on here that she had her own little YouTube channel.

Eden & Briana: oh And she did the Pokemon cards and Did they, did the police question where, or question. You're jumping ahead. Sorry.

Eden & Briana: Love ya. Okay. So he was dropped off at home and the search for Kaya continued. But Aiden wasn't home long when an officer picked him up and took him out driving around so that Aiden could show him where they had been and the route they took and.

Eden & Briana: You know, so the police officers would know exactly where they went. Okay. After they were shown the route and the places they went, they took Aiden to the station for more formal interviewing, which would be a normal thing.

Eden & Briana: Search parties were organized and missing child flyers were made. Whoops, I lied. I did put it in here. Hundreds of people met at Kaya's elementary school to assist in the search. And apparently about 20 other police agencies from surrounding areas showed up to help.

Eden & Briana: Wow. So it was huge. A description of Kaya was given to the public to be on the lookout for a 10-year-old girl, five foot, 450 pounds, blonde hair, blue eyes, last seen wearing an orange Bronco shirt with light blue pants.

Eden & Briana: it in Excuse me.

Eden & Briana: I hope I didn't miss Paige in here somehow. That would just be our luck, though, because before getting this, we were struggling with our equipment.

Eden & Briana: o And I have got stuff crossed out on you. Like I said, I was over in this. So back at the station, while the search is going on and stuff, Aiden is telling them what happened. And his side of the story is

Eden & Briana: Can't wait to hear what he has to say. Aiden told the police that he had bent some of Kaia's Pokemon cards. But Kaia wasn't mad because he said he would get her some more.

Eden & Briana: But here's the kicker. This little shh kid did not have any money. So he planned to go to the store and steal them. And apparently when he told Kaia about his plan, she wanted to go with him.

Eden & Briana: Doubtful, but okay. That's kind of what I thought too, but I wasn't there. But yes. But maybe, yeah who knows, like maybe she looked up to him and wanted to...

Eden & Briana: be involved with what he was doing yeah there could that's a possibility it is a possibility but my first instinct was doubtful bullshit so the first store that they went to they were unsuccessful unsuccessful they kept the pokemon cards like behind the counter or locked up and so he stole some candy instead and they left they were going to go to another store But oh, my gosh, now I got a burp.

Eden & Briana: They were going to go to another store. But Kaya was thirsty. So they decided to stop at home first. Now, if I'm understanding this correctly, this was probably about the time that it was like seven o'clock and they said that they were going to go to another store.

Eden & Briana: okay This is my guess, though. I could be entirely wrong. But they went home, they grabbed some water, and Aiden gave his pete his brother a piece of the candy, and they took off again.

Eden & Briana: They walked to another store and, again, weren't able to get any Pokemon cards. So they walked to this kind of more undeveloped area where apparently kids hang out.

Eden & Briana: And they walked along a creek, but they noticed the sky was getting dark, like it was going rain. So he goes on to a walking path, I believe it was called Heritage Trail, to take cover under some tree branches.

Eden & Briana: When it didn't start raining right away, Kaya decided she wanted to try to beat the rain home. But the rain had started, so they waited for it to let up. Just a little bit, you know, let up some. It must have been coming down hard or whatever.

Eden & Briana: So just let it let up just a little bit. And then so they let it let up. That sounds so funny. And started walking back home. Now, by now, it is dark outside.

Eden & Briana: And Aiden is leading the way and Kaya is following behind him on this trail, right? And then he says, she just wasn't there anymore. She was just gone.

Eden & Briana: ahsh shit

Eden & Briana: And with it raining and being dark outside, and Aiden also said that the area was not familiar for Kaya, it is possible that she could have lost her way.

Eden & Briana: Highly likely, not so much. But possible, nay maybe.

Eden & Briana: Probably one in a million, but the possibility is there. So, sorry, I've got to turn my page.

Eden & Briana: Now, and I'm thinking about you and I here.

Eden & Briana: If it was you and I in the middle of a thunderstorm, in the dark, in the dark, we would be so far up each other's personal space.

Eden & Briana: There is no way we could get separated. No way. No. But not everyone is chicken shit of the dark the way you and I are.

Eden & Briana: True. But most 10 year olds are from whom afraid of the dark. so And who would she run to? The older brother, right? Yeah, I would have. well I probably would have hold of the shirt tails. Yeah.

Eden & Briana: and Did I hear something? Oh, it was you. I'm going to take a drink talk for a second. Well, I was taking a drink. I hit my something or the other. In the closet pod.

Eden & Briana: Yeah.

Eden & Briana: Now Aiden says there was no reason for her to just leave and not follow him. They were not arguing or fighting. And when Aiden realizes Kaya is no longer following him, he backtracks to look for her.

Eden & Briana: He called out her name, but he didn't get any response. He says he looked for her for about 45 minutes, but just couldn't find her.

Eden & Briana: That's when he started walking home and Jacoby found him and picked him up.

Eden & Briana: What your thoughts on that story?

Eden & Briana: um Well, it's very well thought out, but I still call bullshit just because, you know, this is our podcast and

Eden & Briana: Obviously, something bad happens. Well, you're right on both counts. And the police are agreeing with you.

Eden & Briana: So their first instinct was bullshit. They're feeling like his story is off. There's something just not right about it. So they dig in the hooks, man.

Eden & Briana: They start pressing this kid and they start pressing him hard. It is, net it it by this time, it has been eight hours since Kaya was last seen. Jesus.

Eden & Briana: She looks like a little armadillo. Oh, Smokey? Yeah. She's all curled up. Now, they weren't out in the wilderness, and Kaya was a smart kid.

Eden & Briana: She would have went to, like, one of the nearby businesses or a nearby house to ask for help or would have someone call home or have the police come and get her. Aiden had no explanation for why she hadn't done that.

Eden & Briana: He just stuck to the she just vanished story. Now, police's spidey senses must have been tingling as they felt Aiden knew more than what he was telling and the thought that he could be involved was creeping into their thoughts.

Eden & Briana: They had Aiden draw a map of where he and Kaia had been that day, but not one of the tracking dogs picked up her scent in any of those places. Hmm. Hmm. When police asked about the clothes he was wearing, Aiden said what he had on was what he had been wearing that whole day.

Eden & Briana: But that was a lie. And the police knew it because they had watched the surveillance video from one of the stores they were at at showhone yeah that showed him in different clothing, not to mention his shoes were completely dry with zero mud on them.

Eden & Briana: Now, this seems highly unlikely considering he was walking in a rainstorm, right? Red flag. Red flag. And if you have nothing to hide, why lie?

Eden & Briana: Right? I mean, it's not, I mean, it's not total rocket science, but who knows? I could be wrong. Well... You are old and he is not.

Eden & Briana: If I'm old, what does that make you? Ancient. Frick, can't you see the ashes? I'm already like cremating myself. So red flag.

Eden & Briana: Anyway, the police also went through the video surveillance from the second store that Aiden said they went to. And guess what? Aiden and Kaya were not on the surveillance during the time frame Aiden said they were there.

Eden & Briana: When they relay this information to Aiden, he came back with, maybe you should check different times and you will find us. He was adamant that they were at that store. yes Sorry, but video surveillance doesn't lie. Right?

Eden & Briana: By this time, they are done messing around, and they just came out and asked him if he did anything to Kaya, which Aiden totally denies saying, quote,

Eden & Briana: Why would I do anything to Kaya? Unquote. Again, did you do anything to Kaya? Quote, no, I didn't do a single thing to Kaya, unquote.

Eden & Briana: They kept pressing him. They asked if he was ever really angry and if he had any thoughts of hurting someone when he was angry. They asked if he was at all concerned about Kaya.

Eden & Briana: And Aiden expressed at that time that he was more concerned about himself than Because he has caught on now that the police believe that he had something to do with her disappearance.

Eden & Briana: They gave Aiden a little break. And when they returned, they used a different approach, saying things about how scared his mom and Jacoby are. And they went on to ask him if he were to hurt someone, one how would he go about it?

Eden & Briana: He said a fist fight was the only way he knew how to hurt someone. Aiden really starts getting frustrated at this point and just wanted to be done already. So they bring in his mom to once again, to turn my page, change tactics.

Eden & Briana: When his mom comes in, he tells her how frustrated he is and he doesn't get why the police think he had anything to do with Kaia being missing. She says, maybe your past history has something to do with why they aren't taking your story serious.

Eden & Briana: Ooh, what's the past history? Here we go. According to his record, he had anger issues, violent outbursts, and aggression issues.

Eden & Briana: Okay, so...

Eden & Briana: If he has this history mission of anger... Mm-hmm. o why would you let him be alone with somebody that couldn't defend themselves?

Eden & Briana: I wish I had an answer for that because... same Because I'm assuming...

Eden & Briana: So the mom is his mom and then the girl is's her boyfriend's boyfriend's daughter. Mm-hmm. You would think at some point they would have had that conversation, the parents.

Eden & Briana: One would hope?

Eden & Briana: Okay.

Eden & Briana: I'm just, I'm just, um I'm going to keep it to myself.

Eden & Briana: But why why would you let them be alone together? Correct. Correct. But maybe like, man but even still, even if it was in his history, how long ago?

Eden & Briana: How long ago was that history? Did he get rehabilitated?

Eden & Briana: You know what I mean? Mm-hmm. Okay. You have that look of shut up and let me keep going. yeah Well, I'm trying to remember if I wrote all that down, all the things. It's like, it's been so long because remember I told you I was just fed up with this. yeah I think we could have made like three or four episodes out of this if I would have kept digging.

Eden & Briana: This is condensed, like highly condensed. I watched the interviews with the police. I watched the interview when they brought the mom in. I watched all of this. Mm-hmm. Because they have it on, like, if you Google it, you'll get it. Right.

Eden & Briana: If I have to hear that kid's whiny little voice ever again in my entire life, it'll be too soon. huh That bad, eh? When we're done here, I'll pull one up for you. Okay.

Eden & Briana: Okay. Bart Simpson could laugh in my ear 24 hours a day before i ever want to hear it again. and I'm going to pull it up for you. That just shows how much I love you. Okay. right So anyway, Katie asked if they had done anything they shouldn't have that would cause Kaya to be scared to come home.

Eden & Briana: But Aiden said no. Katie asks, now Katie is his mom. Remember they changed tactics. They brought mama in. Okay. Okay. Katie asked Aiden if he needs a hug.

Eden & Briana: And on the interrogation video, you can see Aiden almost crawling all the way onto his mom's lap. Just... You're going to have to see it to believe it.

Eden & Briana: And then you combine... The whiny little voice. Oh, you'll understand why I'd had enough. Okay. You'll get it. So they collected Aiden's clothes. They swabbed inside his cheeks and scraped under his fingernails. And he asked, quote, what do they want my clothes for? And his mom.

Eden & Briana: Oh, I should have unquoted there. I guess I was getting lazy. And his mom tells him, you know, to make sure that there isn't any blood on them. And because he was the last one with Kaya. It was then decided to set him up for a polygraph.

Eden & Briana: Aiden was Mirandized and was more worried about if he could leave when they were done. That's all he was worried about. He didn't, yeah, like he's got very ah selfish aura about him.

Eden & Briana: Doesn't give a shit about Kyle. Right. I'm not going to disagree with you. The examiner, before the test started, asked if he'd ever been a patient in mental hospital.

Eden & Briana: The answer was yes. And he said he was diagnosed with ADHD, major depression, major emotional disorders, and anger issues.

Eden & Briana: The examiner asked him what kind of things make you angry when you think about it. He said for four years he has been in constant therapy but claimed that his anger issues were under control.

Eden & Briana: But his records would indicate a completely different story. This is what gets me right here. I think this is what broke me and made me want to quit this case.

Eden & Briana: One social worker, and this was taken out of, I can't remember what news article. It was in a news article that I read and I forgot to source it. But one social worker said it was shocking that he was ever left alone with 10-year-old Kaya.

Eden & Briana: oh I just got the chills.

Eden & Briana: Oh, fuck. Fudge. Sorry, Brad. That just broke me with this case.

Eden & Briana: Well, I guess it coincides with what I said earlier. Mm-hmm. Of did he get rehabilitated and like how long was these episodes? That was some of your first stuff was why in the hell was she with him anyway? Yeah.

Eden & Briana: And remember the look I gave you? Mm-hmm. That's why. a it It came to light that his mom had to call the police on him during one of his outbursts.

Eden & Briana: When he was asked about what medications he was taking, he admitted that he didn't like taking the medications and that he had stopped taking them four or five months ago.

Eden & Briana: Cold turkey. I don't have a clue. Meds. But he's 15 years old. Who's supervising him and making sure he stays on his meds?

Eden & Briana: I feel like... Now, I'm not... I've never been in this situation. i can't say what I would and wouldn't do But one would think...

Eden & Briana: Knowing that your son has been in a menstruation, he's been diagnosed, he got medicated.

Eden & Briana: And in therapy. In therapy. One would hope you would stay on top of that. Okay.

Eden & Briana: What were they, like, were they just in his room and she just six thought he was taking them?

Eden & Briana: There had to have been changes in his behavior. or was she a lazy parent? i And didn't know. And didn't care to know. I mean, there's so many... Because you have to refill them, correct? Correct.

Eden & Briana: Right. and Five months? Without getting a refill? Unless she was refilling them and he was hiding them. I mean, there's so many variables to what could have been happening behind the scenes that we don't know about.

Eden & Briana: So I don't want to point the finger at her. No.

Eden & Briana: It shouldn't be a 15-year-old. They're not responsible enough for that kind of stuff, though, are they? Especially boys. Yeah, boys are at least five years further behind, so you're asking a 10-year-old stay on top of their meds.

Eden & Briana: Okay. But we don't know. We don't know. We are. By way the story is going,

Eden & Briana: my feelings are strong. and you are allowed to have them feelings. ye Okay. So when the examiner asked him how he felt since he stopped taking them, his chilling answer was, quote, I don't really feel anything anymore, unquote.

Eden & Briana: Okay, Dexter. so Total Dexter vibes. Total Dexter vibes. As he keeps talking, he changes his story again. This time saying that when he lost her, he actually intentionally left her because she was annoying him.

Eden & Briana: I'm sorry, what? Yep. You're the one who bent her Pokemon cards. You're the one who promised her that you were going to get her new Pokemon cards. Right. And now she's being annoying to you?

Eden & Briana: so So what, you just left her? That's his story. That's his new story.

Eden & Briana: So the longer Aiden is in custody, the more that he is literally just starting to fall apart. By this time, he had been at the station around 12 hours. Oh, fucking wah.

Eden & Briana: oh sorry. Did I say that out loud? I'm so sorry.

Eden & Briana: The examiner tells Aiden they are not going to do the test because it is no longer needed And leads him to another room where it is revealed to him that they found Kaya's body.

Eden & Briana: Ugh.

Eden & Briana: He keeps trying to put on the show of being shocked that they found her dead. And keeps asking what happened to her. Is she dead? What happened? Do they think I did this? Now all of a sudden he cares about Kaya? No.

Eden & Briana: Because he just said, do they think I did it So he doesn't really care that she is dead. she's He's more worried that the police think they have he has something to do with it.

Eden & Briana: Oh, I'm getting riled up, mother. i quit this case, remember?

Eden & Briana: The examiner tries to get him to just listen and say they have surveillance video of you guys walking down the road and we have video of just you walking back. So we know that there was a time that you were together and shortly after there's a timeline where you weren't together anymore.

Eden & Briana: He again tries to stick to the story that he left on purpose because Kaya was annoying him.

Eden & Briana: And by this time, and I have this written down, he's crying and very whiny sounding on the interview. And which if you want to listen to it, it's available all over the internet. It's not hard to find at all.

Eden & Briana: I couldn't listen to it anymore. i have that written down. I couldn't listen to it anymore. You know, as many times growing up that I annoyed my own brother,

Eden & Briana: He still made sure that I was close behind him heading home. Mm-hmm.

Eden & Briana: Yeah.

Eden & Briana: Even if... Even if he wasn't blood-related or... He was just dating my... Whatever. His... Whatever. i would still... Yeah, okay. Mm-hmm.

Eden & Briana: Okay. Keep going. So, anyway... Aiden was taken to a hospital for a sexual assault exam and then taken to a social services facility.

Eden & Briana: Two days later, the DNA from Aiden was a match to the DNA found on Kaya's body, and he was arrested, still claiming his innocence. Ahem, ahem.

Eden & Briana: Like several fools before Aiden, he couldn't keep his mouth shut and brag to another inmate who in turn came forward with the details Aiden told him, which is as follows, and I am quoting this, and it's, yeah, quote, he told me that he killed his stepsister and that she was like 10 or 11 years old, and he said that he had a metal pole or something, that it was about that big or something like that. And that he just kept hitting her with it.

Eden & Briana: And that he said he saw her brains and he fractured her skull and all this stuff. And he just kept beating her unquote.

Eden & Briana: That was the inmate. That was the guy telling. you Okay. Kaya's body was found nude from the waist down.

Eden & Briana: She was beautiful, brutally beaten and showed signs of sexual assault. Faced with all of the evidence, Aiden accepted a plea deal where the sexual assault charge would be dropped and he would plead guilty to first-degree murder.

Eden & Briana: He was sentenced to life in prison with the possibility of parole after 40 years. With? Yep.

Eden & Briana: And that's... It was in here that I had to shut down and quit. You can tell that I just jumped straight to the sentencing and I just... I quit it.

Eden & Briana: But that's what happened. There's a lot more in between.

Eden & Briana: in but you know, after the yeah the informant,

Eden & Briana: there was a lot more. But I was just done.

Eden & Briana: The sentencing. What?

Eden & Briana: I'm surprised you didn't say reason of insanity, not guilty by at reason of insanity, whatever fuck it's called. Yeah. Sorry, Brad. um Second of all, why would the prosecution

Eden & Briana: agree to drop the sexual charges and offer him possibility of parole? I don't know. Maybe they didn't have enough evidence to actually prove that... Well, the sexual assault came back as positive.

Eden & Briana: What did the autopsy say? I didn't. Brianna, I couldn't. I was done. I know, but damn. That's why I said I'm doing a two for tonight.

Eden & Briana: I subparred this one because I just.

Eden & Briana: I felt all the feels. Between the parenting and the the meds and the. Yeah. I felt all the feels with this one and I just.

Eden & Briana: DNF'd it. Yep. And I can't say I blame you. But have a lot of questions. And you can Google away. If you guys want more information on this, it is a click away. Yeah.

Eden & Briana: You can go through all the things. Go watch the interviews. i oh Go look up the pictures. I wonder if I can. Would I get in trouble if I like tried to repost an interview onto our Facebook page?

Eden & Briana: Probably. Oh. I don't want to get in trouble. I don't know how that shit works. I don't either. ah Well, it'd have to be a copyright, wouldn't it? There'd have to be a disclaimer or something somewhere, right?

Eden & Briana: Yeah. Or source it or something. I wonder if I could repost it and source it. or some of them say, don't you have without the copyright owner's permission or something. Yeah.

Eden & Briana: Okay. i'll We'll look into it. We'll just, well, do you guys just go watch it because that's a lot of work and ain't got time for that. Right. So anyway, so that was that.

Eden & Briana: Disgusting. Was that not fun for you? No. I'm sorry. none Not a bit. Are you, this is going to be, let me see.

Eden & Briana: This one might be pretty short and sweet. Well, not real short and sweet, but I can make it fast. I mean, I can try anyway. do you need to fill up your water, hit pause, do any of the things? Nope. Okay.

Eden & Briana: Welcome back to the second part of Miner's Mayhem today.

Eden & Briana: This is your twofer. This is your twofer. And your true crime news for this one is in Santa Ana, California, a former cheerleading coach and camp counselor has been convicted of molesting the young girls he taught in Orange County, California in the early two thousand He is also facing charges related to molestation and exhibitionism in Florida.

Eden & Briana: For more information on this and other true crime news, you can visit truecrimenews.com.

Eden & Briana: And people wonder why Why we don't people? Why we don't freaking people. You don't you just never know who you can trust. And I know the Bible says, like, thou shall not judge or whatever,

Eden & Briana: but How can you not when... the I mean, you just don't know. I'd rather be safe than sorry. Yeah, because you can't take it back.

Eden & Briana: Right. Whatever the... Yeah. I don't know. i just... Especially nowadays, like, true crime has skyrocketed.

Eden & Briana: Everything has just skyrocketed. or

Eden & Briana: ah You mean there's more of it? Yeah. Or has there always been this much and always these things, but we did not have access to the social media that we do now?

Eden & Briana: That could be it too. Because I don't think all of a sudden we just, all people just became. No. So I wonder, there's probably maybe a happy balance between the two? Probably. Why is my microphone getting really hot against my chest? Is this sucker going to blow up? i hope not.

Eden & Briana: I think I'm all right. Okay. Let's not hear a pop. Holy. Anyways. So, yeah. So for this episode, we're going to go to Norfolk. all Norfolk.

Eden & Briana: Norfolk. That's a mouthful. Why is that hard to say? Because you got a or. Nor for. For. Folk. Fuck. You have a long O and then a short O. That is a roughin'.

Eden & Briana: Norfolk. Norfolk. Norfolk. norfolk norfolk Okay. That's better. Nor all. We're going there. Virginia to the year 2013. my goodness. It was yesterday too.

Eden & Briana: I know, right? That's the year your little brother was born. That was yesterday. That was yesterday. So according to Google, nor Norfolk is a major seaport...

Eden & Briana: is a major seaport and the urban, cultural, and financial center center of the Hamptons road Roads region. Known for its military presence, including the world's largest naval base, according to the 2020 census, Norfolk's population was around 238,000.

Eden & Briana: Wow. So happenings in 2013 included the Boston Marathon bombing, the death of Nelson Mandela, and the release of the animated movie Frozen. And that's just a couple of them because we've already covered something in this year.

Eden & Briana: So fashion trends included skinny jeans, heavy metal accessories, wedge sneakers, and lace, among many, many others. As I'm staring at my wedge sneakers. Right?

Eden & Briana: In our closet pod. in my closet. So Vincent Tyrell Parker was born June 13th, 1999 to Wayne and Carol Parker. Now Wayne worked in the heating and cooling repair industry and Carol worked at Dominion Energy, which it's and like an electric and a natural gas company. Yeah.

Eden & Briana: Kind of Otter Tail or something like that. Excuse me wayne was Carol was when Vincent was born.

Eden & Briana: Now, I cannot say if the decision to have children later in life was because they wanted to be more settled in life and their careers, or if there were medical reasons. Either way, they became parents in their very early 40s, and for Wayne, almost 40.

Eden & Briana: And speaking from my own experience, there are certain advantages to both, honestly. I was 21 when you and your brother, went well, I was 21 when your brother was born and 23 when you were born.

Eden & Briana: So I was still fairly young. And when you guys, you know, I was young when you guys turned 18 and graduated. And financially speaking, we faced struggles.

Eden & Briana: You know what I mean? We weren't settled or whatever. Yeah. But then you fast forward to three months before I turned 43. I had your little brother.

Eden & Briana: It's awesome and life is great. I love every minute of it. But retirement will never get here. Traveling is a pipe dream and I'm tied to school, after school, you know. Sports. Sports. All of the things.

Eden & Briana: I mean, he's 12 now, so it's passing by really fast, which also sucks. Yeah. So there's, to me, there's pros and cons, no matter what age one decides to start a family. Yeah.

Eden & Briana: I, I don't know if I could choose one or the other because there's so many, i mean, kids are great no matter how you look at it, but I struggled more when I was younger

Eden & Briana: But I'm done with all that. Now I want to go see the world and I'm tied to school again. i know. It's like, shit. Didn't think that through. Didn't think that through. But I wouldn't change it for the world. Do not get me wrong. No. I mean, he is my sunshine. But bam.

Eden & Briana: Right. Watching everybody. Hey, can you go out this weekend? We're going to grab a motel in South Dakota. Nope, don't got a babysitter. You do have a sitter. I do, but you know what I mean.

Eden & Briana: Yeah, hear you. Anyway. Closing cons.

Eden & Briana: Who cares? Just have your kids. Doesn't matter. Time's right, it'll happen. Anyway, so Vincent was an only child. And again, like I said, I have no reason, no, I have no idea if that was by choice or for other reasons, which is irrelevant anyway, right?

Eden & Briana: Now, Wayne and Carol were devout Baptists.

Eden & Briana: Are you gonna shoot me with those bubbles? What are you doing? Nothing. I see you playing. I'm not doing nothing. You better be shooting them at the cat and not me. That's a big-ass bubble maker.

Eden & Briana: Oh my god. It's a bubble factory in the pod lab. Closet lab. Sorry. Okay, anyway, back to it or we're never going to get done. know. I'm sleep deprived. Leave me alone. I know.

Eden & Briana: So anyway, all of that was irrelevant. Whatever. Now, Wayne and Carol were devout Baptists and they were very conservative in their values and beliefs. Vinson was not allowed to do things that many of us probably take for granted, such as school sports, art, music, video games,

Eden & Briana: Things I like to call, quote, boy toys, such as, you know, like action figures, Nerf guns, all the things that most boys played with at one time or another.

Eden & Briana: Was there a reason? Southern Baptist. Other than that, did they think it was demonic to play with toys?

Eden & Briana: Okay. Yep. Okay. So. Keep going. The only types of toys that he was allowed were educational. Or Christian based. Now I can agree with this, but only to a certain extent.

Eden & Briana: All of you kids, you, all of my kids, Had a nice balanced mix of educational games and plain old fun games and toys. Because some of your stuff was educational.

Eden & Briana: Oh, yeah. so was Eli's now. but Most of our education came from playing outside and using our imagination, too. Exactly. Exactly.

Eden & Briana: Kids nowadays, I feel like they have no imagination. They do. But it's a different. But it's completely different. It's different. Yep. It's not the same. we Like we could build castles out of out of sticks and leaves and they're building castles in 3D on their computers.

Eden & Briana: Right. So yes, the imagination is there, but the content, it's just the different way we got there. Yeah, it's weird. I know. It's crazy. So anyway, you guys had the best of both worlds, so to speak.

Eden & Briana: You had education and fun. Yep. So as Vincent became older, the relationship between him and his dad became pretty volatile.

Eden & Briana: Wayne felt that vincent Vincent was too sensitive, you know, kind of who he what we would call not a man's man. you know, the old... wimpy boy. Too sensitive.

Eden & Briana: So by the time Vincent entered junior high, his relationship with his parents was just not that great. Now just imagine, now just, just imagine this. Put yourself there for just the next few minutes that I speak.

Eden & Briana: Imagine not being able to hang out with friends or socialize outside of your school day or church. Every day he would see his peers doing all the things that you and I would consider normal.

Eden & Briana: Meeting friends at a park for a good game of tag or red Rover, climbing playground equipment, playing sports, all the things that I feel

Eden & Briana: are important to kids at those ages. I can only imagine that. how much resentment had built up over the years after living such a conservative lifestyle and being raised.

Eden & Briana: One of my best friends was, um

Eden & Briana: she was sheltered But she wasn't this to this extreme. And once she graduated high school and went to college, holy shit, she let loose.

Eden & Briana: oh She did all the things. All the things.

Eden & Briana: So regardless, it's like you us. He wouldn't have had the tools to function once he graduated high school in social.

Eden & Briana: No, and like... Yeah. Anyways, I always told you what you were going somewhere with that. I know. But now I lost. I lost it. You are not old enough to be doing that shit. I'm sleep deprived. I know you are.

Eden & Briana: So.

Eden & Briana: For his socialization, Vinson actually turned to the World Wide Web to talk about his life, you know. hu And although his parents felt his his time would have been better spent in prayer or volunteer work, they thought that the internet time was just a phase and he would outgrow it.

Eden & Briana: So they didn't really... They allowed it? I'm wondering if maybe they weren't very up on it.

Eden & Briana: But he did it anyway? I don't know. i'm sure there's more to that somewhere.

Eden & Briana: But there's even more. ah This is about to turn into one of those. a Lay it on me. Okay. At a very young age, Vincent knew that he was gay.

Eden & Briana: Oh, shit. Mm-hmm.

Eden & Briana: And for obvious reasons, he hid that from everyone. Now, could you even imagine trying to tell your extremely conservative parents, Baptist parents, that you were gay?

Eden & Briana: Just the thought of it had to be just terrifying for him. He did have a few close friends and a cousin with whom he did share his sexuality with. but he was careful to keep that information off of social media for fear that it would circle back around to his parents.

Eden & Briana: Okay. Now, Wayne and Carol never made it a secret that they did not approve of homosexuality and their belief that it was unnatural and evil.

Eden & Briana: And Vincent was surrounded by a Baptist community who described being gay people as sinners. Okay.

Eden & Briana: So okay from a very young age, he harbored this secret.

Eden & Briana: That's got to eat away at a person. He's going to snap. You combine the whole scenario, it seems like a boiling pot just waiting to spill over. And that's exactly what's going to happen because this wouldn't be a True Crime podcast if it wasn't, right?

Eden & Briana: Correct. So? In 2013, Vincent decided that it was time to reveal to his parents that he was gay.

Eden & Briana: Let me guess, they kick him out or something. As we can only imagine, the conservative Baptist parents did not accept this news very well. Wayne said being gay made Vincent a, quote, sissy.

Eden & Briana: And Carol shared the feeling that homosexuality goes against God.

Eden & Briana: Okay.

Eden & Briana: I'm not going to share your thoughts, my thoughts, opinions, even though I have a right to my own opinion, I'm not going to share it on here. Okay. Okay. Gotcha. I'll discuss it with you after. Okay. i look forward to hearing that.

Eden & Briana: So on December 19th, 2013, Vincent left school early so he could get home before his mother would be expecting him. So he had the element of surprise.

Eden & Briana: As she exited the upstairs bathroom, Vincent pepper sprayed her and attacked her with a metal baseball bat. When she was beaten enough to be unable to get away from from him, Vincent ran down to the garage and grabbed a crowbar, which he used to stab her in the eye and beat her and stab her with it until she was no longer breathing.

Eden & Briana: Vincent then took his mother's car and drove around just passing the time. Because you know he's going to do the same damn thing to his dad, right? So apparently Wayne was a good-sized man, so the only chance Vincent had of overpowering him was to catch him by by surprise.

Eden & Briana: When Wayne got home from work, he found his wife's dead, beaten body. But before he could call for help, Vincent ambushed him, stabbing and beating him with the crowbar.

Eden & Briana: Now, I'm assuming at this part, Vincent must have thought he was dead and must have left or whatever. I'm not sure what happened right there at this point.

Eden & Briana: But Wayne was not dead.

Eden & Briana: He was still alive and had enough faculties to call 911.

Eden & Briana: He did survive the ambulance ride to the hospital and remained conscious long enough to tell authorities who had done this to himself and his wife. Shortly thereafter, Wayne succumbed to his injuries.

Eden & Briana: Because Wayne was able to implicate his son before he died, police immediately brought Vincent in for questioning, and he admitted to murdering both his parents. And following the interview, he was arrested and officially charged.

Eden & Briana: Vincent's trial began in May 2014, and he was being charged as an an adult. He pled guilty to two counts of second-degree murder and was sentenced to 40 years, with part of the sentence being suspended with the stipulation that he would be held in juvenile prison until the age of 21.

Eden & Briana: Then he would be transferred to an adult prison where he would serve a remaining 21 years and 10 months. So 2020, Vincent was transferred to a maximum security prison in Virginia where he will remain until his release in 2042 when he is around the age of 42.

Eden & Briana: So he'll get out. About the age his parents were when they had him.

Eden & Briana: Yeah.

Eden & Briana: Thoughts on that one? Oh, ones that you can share?

Eden & Briana: I don't know. um

Eden & Briana: It's a sad story. Okay. That's what I can share. It is a sad story in more ways than one. It's sad. unfortunate. Yes.

Eden & Briana: I feel like...

Eden & Briana: There could have been other ways he could have handled the situation. Like running away. Maybe.

Eden & Briana: Or

Eden & Briana: even going to therapy. But I'm assuming his parents would be like, just pray. Pray away, Pray it away. Yeah.

Eden & Briana: Unfortunate.

Eden & Briana: I didn't like that one either. No. No. I'm all about being a good Christian family. There's nothing wrong with that, but damn.

Eden & Briana: Some is very strict. Yeah. And I'm going to shut my mouth now. Me too.

Eden & Briana: ah um if you liked your twofer
