Briana: What's up you lovely bitches?

Eden & Briana: Hi guys.

Briana: Uh oh.

Eden & Briana: You can't hear me?

Briana: Oh yes I can.

Briana: Yeah, I can.

Eden & Briana: Okay, you scared me.

Briana: You like cut off for a second and I was like, whoa!

Eden & Briana: Oh, okay. How you feeling?

Briana: Well, you guys haven't noticed, we are doing remote because I still feel like shit.

Eden & Briana: And I'm not catching it.

Briana: Mom's not catching it. And I just hope it goes away before Saturday.

Eden & Briana: Oh, that's right. You fly out, huh?

Briana: Yeah.

Eden & Briana: Oh, duh.

Briana: yeah

Briana: So, apologies for coughing in advance.

Eden & Briana: You sound terrible.

Briana: I feel terrible.

Eden & Briana: Can you hear me okay now?

Briana: Yeah.

Eden & Briana: Okay, good. All right, Let's it.

Briana: Let's just get to the gritty so I can take some NyQuil and go to bed.

Eden & Briana: but but

Eden & Briana: Okay, let's do it. We're going to do true crime news. Ready?

Briana: Ready.

Eden & Briana: A 32-year-old Florida man swallows nearly $1 million dollars in jewelry while getting arrested for allegedly stealing it.

Eden & Briana: So for more information on this and other true crime news, you can go to truecrimenews.com.

Briana: I will not be looking into that story.

Eden & Briana: Mm-hmm.

Briana: a million dollars worth of jewelry. How long do you think that would have taken him?

Eden & Briana: Well, I guess it depends upon where he was shopping. I think it said he was shopping Tiffany's, so I'm assuming probably not very long.

Briana: Probably like 10 pieces, maybe 20 pieces.

Eden & Briana: I don't know. But...

Briana: I don't know how expensive Tiffany is, but that's,

Eden & Briana: But why? Just why?

Eden & Briana: i have another update.

Briana: I'm assuming he's got to go to the hospital.

Eden & Briana: I'm assuming that the they're going to follow him around with... Yep. Not even... Oh, God. Yeah, we're not going to talk about that.

Eden & Briana: It will come out.

Briana: or the other.

Eden & Briana: It'll come out.

Briana: Either through the mouth, the butthole, or surgery.

Eden & Briana: Yeah, it's coming out.

Briana: wonder if... ah You know, no matter the amount of cleaning they have done to those, I bet they're, bet they got, ah what's the word depreciated?

Eden & Briana: Depreciation?

Briana: Yeah.

Eden & Briana: Yeah, they depreciated instantly. He put them in his mouth, I bet.

Briana: Oh yeah.

Eden & Briana: yeah

Briana: wonder if they're going try to like resell them.

Eden & Briana: I wouldn't want to know and I'm glad there's not one near me. I'm not going shopping there.

Briana: Okay.

Eden & Briana: oh Yeah. Okay, so I have another update.

Briana: ah and

Eden & Briana: I have another Timothy Hochschultz update. So after the setback from last week, his trial has actually been rescheduled to begin on October 1st.

Eden & Briana: So we have another trial date. So I won't have nothing for you until sometime in October as far as that case goes.

Briana: okay

Eden & Briana: I feel like I'm yelling.

Eden & Briana: well. well

Briana: Oh, well.

Eden & Briana: Okay, since you're so miserable, I'm just gonna jump right in. This is the part two of our Cindy Collier and Shirley Wolf case. um A quick recap.

Eden & Briana: Last week, we touched base on the lives of Cindy and Shirley. They both came from very dysfunctional home lives where they were mentally, physically, and sexually abused, leading to some pretty severe behavioral issues. in And both girls, it was landing them in and out of foster homes.

Eden & Briana: And ultimately, they met in a group home and they were instantly drawn together. Okay. Okay.

Briana: disaster duo, if you must

Eden & Briana: if you must. So within hours of meeting one another, the girls started talking about escaping.

Eden & Briana: Their plan consisted of stealing a car and some money and going on the run in search of a better life. They came to the decision that an elderly person would be the wisest choice to target.

Eden & Briana: I gotta lock that. Okay. um Because they wouldn't be able to fight back.

Briana: Wow. Wow.

Eden & Briana: Okay, well, this plan takes a really sinister turn when Cindy states, quote, we'll have to kill her so that she can't rat us out to the cops, unquote.

Eden & Briana: To which Shirley agreed.

Briana: wow

Eden & Briana: Cindy went on to claim that she knew the perfect place to find their victim. was a condominium complex complex where she once lived with her parents, where she knew the majority of the occupants were elderly and lived alone.

Eden & Briana: So the girls dyed their hair in a feeble attempt to disguise their identity. And on June 14th, 1983, the girls made their escape and hitchhiked their way to the Auburn Green Condominium Complex.

Eden & Briana: Are you following?

Briana: Yeah.

Eden & Briana: The two girls knocked on several doors asking for directions for a glass of water or to use the phone. But some of the residents had an uneasy feeling and did not let the girls into their homes.

Eden & Briana: Now, when one woman answered the door, she went to get the girls a glass of water, but they spotted her husband sitting on the couch. So they left.

Eden & Briana: You okay?

Briana: No.

Eden & Briana: Oh, you poor thing.

Eden & Briana: So just a little before 5 PM, the girls knocked on the door of 85 year old Anna Brackett, a kind sweet lady who would never refuse to help two young girls in need.

Eden & Briana: The girls, yep.

Briana: That shit pisses me off. To get advantage of elderly.

Eden & Briana: a The girls asked for a glass of water and to use the phone. And of course, Anna being the type of woman that she was, Anna invited both the girls in.

Eden & Briana: Cindy immediately took in her surroundings, making sure no one else aside from Anna was in the home. And Anna showed Cindy to the phone and gestured Shirley to have a seat. She fixed the girls a glass of ice water. And as Cindy returned, saying there was no answer and she would try again in a little bit, so Anna invited Cindy to sit down also.

Eden & Briana: The girls inquired if she lived alone, so Anna explained that her husband, which he really wasn't her husband, but she referred to him as her husband, was in the hospital with cancer.

Eden & Briana: Anna and the two girls visited for about an hour. do you need to cough?

Briana: No.

Eden & Briana: Okay. Anna told them about some of her travels and her adventures. She talked about her family, her grandchildren, and her great-grandchildren.

Eden & Briana: So she spent almost an hour visiting and getting to know these girls. I forgot to mute my phone. Sorry. Sorry. um

Briana: We don't have our ducks in a row at all.

Eden & Briana: We do not.

Briana: That's OK.

Eden & Briana: um So the ring of the telephone interrupted their conversation and Anna excused herself to answer the phone. She explained to the girls that the phone call was from her son, Carl.

Eden & Briana: and he and his wife were going to be on their way to pick her up to go play bingo. Cindy stood up asking how long it would be until they got there, and which Anna said about 20 minutes.

Eden & Briana: Cindy turned to Shirley and said, quote, it's time, unquote. Shirley looked at Cindy with a blank look on her face. Quote, it's time to do it now. We do it now.

Eden & Briana: Don't just sit there staring at me. Do it, unquote. In an instant, Shirley was off of her chair and standing by Anna. Shirley grabbed her around the neck, cutting off Anna's air.

Eden & Briana: Anna tried to fight back, but she was no match for Shirley. Shirley got Anna down and pushed her face into the floor and one knee in her back. Quote, I'm going to kill you, unquote.

Eden & Briana: Shirley kept repeating. Cindy ran into the kitchen and grabbed a paring knife and tossed it to Shirley. Shirley brought the knife down into Anna's back. Anna's scream was muffled by the chokehold that Shirley had her in.

Eden & Briana: Anna fought back and she managed to knock Shirley off balance, forcing her to let loose of Anna and Anna managed to get to her knees when Cindy hit the left side of her head several times with a hard object.

Eden & Briana: When Anna fell back to the floor, Shirley pinned her again and resumed stabbing and slashing Anna in a frenzy and bent the paring knife. Cindy ran to the kitchen and returned with a butcher knife and Shirley resumed her attack on Anna.

Eden & Briana: In almost a whisper, Anna stated, quote, I'm dying, unquote.

Briana: Mm-mm.

Eden & Briana: Quote, good, unquote, Shirley said. Shirley believed Anna was dead because there was blood coming from her mouth and nose, but Cindy wasn't so sure, so she took the knife and slashed Anna a couple of more times.

Eden & Briana: When they were certain Anna was dead, they ransacked the house, stealing a set of keys and a wallet. They headed for Anna's car. However, they were unable to get the car started.

Eden & Briana: None of the keys would work. Afraid Carl would be there soon, they abandoned the car and headed to the highway on foot. The girls hitchhiked their way to Roseville. I have to cough, excuse me.

Eden & Briana: Any questions, Bree?

Briana: No.

Eden & Briana: No? Okay, they hitchhiked their way to Roseville. And as they were driving, Shirley put pulled out her diary and wrote, what would be her final entry?

Eden & Briana: Quote, today, Cindy and I ran away and killed an old lady. It was lots of fun. Unquote.

Eden & Briana: Not really knowing what to do since they were unable to get Anna's car, the girls decided to hitchhike back to Cindy's house and figure it out in the morning.

Eden & Briana: When they got to Cindy's house, the girls hung out waiting for the news to come on to see if there was anything about the murder. And in fact, the murder did make the news and also that authorities were looking for two teenage girls in connection with the killing.

Eden & Briana: The girls knew they had to have a plan. As they were thinking about what to do next, they fell asleep, exhausted from the day's events. Now.

Briana: Are you kidding me?

Eden & Briana: Nope.

Briana: Okay.

Briana: If you look at photos of Cindy and Shirley, Shirley is not little. She looks like...

Eden & Briana: That's Cindy.

Briana: Oh, it's...

Eden & Briana: Surely it's a little one.

Briana: Oh, okay. I got it mixed up then.

Eden & Briana: Yep. Cindy's the larger of the two girls.

Briana: And Shirley took on Anna.

Eden & Briana: She was known to hold her own also.

Briana: Wow.

Eden & Briana: Yep.

Briana: And just think that her son just called.

Briana: Time can change or like life can change so freaking fast.

Eden & Briana: Yep.

Briana: Literally just talked to his mom 20 minutes ago. I'll be there in 20 minutes to pick you up for bingo.

Eden & Briana: Yep.

Briana: And I'm assuming was the son the one that found her dead?

Eden & Briana: I'm gonna get there.

Briana: Okay.

Briana: Ugh, the devastation. I just talked to her 20 minutes ago.

Eden & Briana: I couldn't imagine. Could not imagine.

Briana: And to go to bingo!

Eden & Briana: Yep. So I'll get into it.

Eden & Briana: So like you just said, as you know, Carl was on his way to pick Anna up. When Carl arrived, he rang the doorbell, but his mother didn't come to the door.

Eden & Briana: Concerned, Carl looked through the front window where he could see his mom laying in a pool of blood. Carl ran to the neighbors and asked them to call an ambulance. and then he went and broke a window so he could get into the home, finding his mother laying on the living room floor well beyond the need for any life-saving measures.

Briana: Mm-hmm.

Eden & Briana: Investigators questioned neighbors where they learned from several that two teenage girls had been knocking on doors. One neighbor reported seeing two girls running from Anna's house not too long before Anna's body was discovered.

Eden & Briana: Now, investigators had several tips come in, many of which identified 14-year-old Shirley Wolfe and 15-year-old Cindy Collier. Because now remember, Cindy had lived at that complex with her parents.

Briana: yep

Eden & Briana: Yeah.

Briana: Yep. has been seen by multiple pairs of eyes.

Eden & Briana: Mm-hmm.

Briana: Like, how dumb can you be?

Eden & Briana: Right?

Briana: Which I'm glad they're that dumb.

Eden & Briana: Right. Right.

Briana: it's like It's like that meme on, I think it's Facebook. I've come across it a couple times where it's like me watching true crime documentary And they left a piece of hair behind or one strand of hair.

Briana: And then me sitting there with my bowl of cereal, fucking idiot.

Eden & Briana: Yep. Oh, geez.

Briana: Post that to our Facebook.

Eden & Briana: Yeah, we need to post that to the Facebook for sure. So and at about 2.30 in the morning, investigators knocked on the door of the Collier home.

Eden & Briana: The girls were found fast asleep. They were woke up, separated and interviewed. While Cindy was denying, Shirley was confessing.

Eden & Briana: When confronted with Shirley's taped confession, Cindy started to laugh stating, quote, to honestly tell you the truth, we didn't feel any badness.

Eden & Briana: Then after we did it, we just wanted to do another one. We just wanted to kill someone just for fun, unquote. Anna's autopsy report showed defensive wounds, evidence of strangulation, blunt force trauma, and 28 stab wounds. However,

Eden & Briana: This number could be higher because there is a possibility that the same wound was stabbed more than one time. You know, it had the same entry point.

Briana: What?

Eden & Briana: Carl Brackett and a son said, quote, there's a scene in the movie Psycho equivalent to what happened to my mother. I never could have imagined that two teenage girls could have done it, unquote.

Eden & Briana: Now, regardless of the brutality of this murder, Cindy and Shirley, under California law at that time, would be tried as juveniles. Yep.

Eden & Briana: That was the law back then. Now, remember, this was back in 1983.

Briana: Yeah, but you did.

Eden & Briana: and don't think I recapped that. Yep. So...

Briana: But damn.

Eden & Briana: Yep. So Cindy pleaded guilty to first-degree murder and burglary. Shirley, however... Pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity.

Briana: Reason I was standing.

Eden & Briana: She underwent a psychiatric evaluation, and after hearing three days of psychiatric testimony, the judge ruled Shirley as legally sane at the time of the crime, referring to Shirley as a, quote, cold-blooded killer, unquote.

Eden & Briana: Shirley and Cindy showed very little emotion in Placer County Juvenile Court. A non-jury verdict was reached within 15 minutes by the judge.

Eden & Briana: They were both sentenced to the California Youth Authority facility until they reached the age of 25. Mm-hmm.

Briana: What a joke. So they served 10 years? That was it?

Eden & Briana: Yep.

Briana: They were out?

Eden & Briana: Yep. So, well, I'll go on.

Eden & Briana: After studying law in prison, Cindy was paroled in 1992. She married, had four children, and has been living a quiet life.

Eden & Briana: Shirley was paroled in 1995. She continued to have trouble with the law for a time, but has since been living in solitary a solitary life in the Midwest and is working to help victims of child abuse overcome their demons.

Eden & Briana: Before we go into questions, my resources for this episode included Little Girl Lost by Joan Miriam, and I relied very heavily on her book. And then When Girls Next Door Kill by Iris Owen, The New York Daily Times, The Sacramento Bee,

Eden & Briana: and my crime library. So it's banter time. My case is officially over. If you don't want to stick around, please exit stage left. The rest of us bitches, let's get to it, shall we?

Eden & Briana: and I'm getting a very dirty look from my daughter. Mm-hmm.

Briana: For one, until this case, I have never met Shirley that was evil. That name is just beautiful to me.

Eden & Briana: Mm-hmm.

Briana: Fuck you.

Eden & Briana: Sorry? sorry.

Briana: i don't agree with them being tried as juveniles.

Eden & Briana: now that was...

Briana: It was premeditated.

Eden & Briana: Yeah. Yes.

Briana: Their behaviors from prior.

Eden & Briana: Mm-hmm.

Eden & Briana: When you put the whole...

Briana: Why should they have been able

Briana: to be sentenced as juveniles? Get out at 25, 26 years old, still a baby

Eden & Briana: Yep.

Eden & Briana: Baby. Mm-hmm.

Briana: and go on to live the perfect little life.

Eden & Briana: I know.

Briana: What about Anna? What about her husband, quote unquote, that was in the hospital with cancer? What about Carl? Do you think they just move on like nothing happened?

Eden & Briana: I know.

Briana: I don't fucking think so. These girls should not have been able to get out.

Eden & Briana: I don't think so either.

Eden & Briana: Not at all. This case pissed me off.

Briana: and It was almost... It was almost... You know, it wasn't like a crime of passion or anything like that. It was premeditated.

Briana: and

Briana: what do they call it when um ah

Briana: like when and when when an attack is so brutal it's um personal.

Briana: Like it's

Eden & Briana: know.

Briana: like it's

Eden & Briana: I know what you're talking about. i do It's just not popping in. It's not a crime of passion. It

Briana: No.

Briana: What the hell is that word? What is it?

Eden & Briana: wasn't family.

Briana: No.

Briana: Anyways, you know what I mean.

Eden & Briana: I do know what you mean.

Briana: Personal attack. Like it, it almost felt personal for how brutal it was. Revenge.

Eden & Briana: Right. But now, I didn't get into heavy detail about her psychiatric evaluation, but one of the psychiatrists, and i don't quote me because it's I'm going to tell it the way I perceived it, um he said that It was like she was killing her mother.

Eden & Briana: Shirley.

Briana: Yeah.

Eden & Briana: It was like all that rage and everything all came out and it was like she was killing her mom.

Briana: But then to say afterwards that we did it for fun and we wanted to do it again.

Eden & Briana: Mm-hmm. Exactly. Exactly.

Briana: that's, you know what I'm, sorry don't know.

Eden & Briana: I do know what you mean. I do know what you mean. Remember the first half I said I wanted to grab those girls and just sweep them out of their nightmare?

Briana: Yeah.

Eden & Briana: But then they became the nightmare.

Briana: Yep. But, you know, it could have been ah potentially avoided.

Eden & Briana: Yes. I truly believe it could have been. I mean,

Eden & Briana: look at Cindy studying law.

Eden & Briana: i know I read something about Pepperdine.

Eden & Briana: If they would had the right upbringing, if she's got the smarts to study law, obviously she's intelligent. Law is not easy.

Briana: Right.

Eden & Briana: If she would had, if she would have grown up in different circumstances,

Briana: And that's probably why she didn't get away with reason of insanity.

Eden & Briana: No, that was Shirley.

Eden & Briana: Shirley did keep struggling there for a while.

Briana: Oh. a

Eden & Briana: Yep. It was Cindy that...

Briana: Yep. Sorry.

Eden & Briana: Yeah.

Briana: I'm getting confused.

Eden & Briana: But there's no... There's really no justice in this case, though. At all.

Briana: No.

Briana: i mean, don't even have your life figured out yet.

Eden & Briana: And Carl...

Eden & Briana: No, no.

Briana: You served a 10 year sentence and now you can just do what you please. Like, please.

Eden & Briana: I'm assuming there was probably a lot of freaking therapy and rehab, but that's beside the point. Anna, you know, she didn't get that. And Carl, he's going to have to live with that vision for the rest of his life you of seeing his mom in that.

Briana: Yeah.

Eden & Briana: in that I mean, that's got to be an... Every time you shut your eyes, you would see that. One would think.

Briana: Yeah, for sure. and it's all you said in the beginning, feel bad for the child, but not so much the adult or who they grow into be.

Eden & Briana: and That's not fair. Right.

Briana: And back again, like I firmly believe that these girls would have gotten the true love of a mother,

Eden & Briana: Mm-hmm.

Briana: think circumstances would have been different.

Eden & Briana: I truly feel that way too. I don't think these guys were born evil. I think they were made that way.

Briana: and And which explains the rehabilitation,

Briana: rehabilitation.

Eden & Briana: Yeah.

Briana: But I just, i don't think I could, it'd be really hard for me to forgive them.

Eden & Briana: Right. I agree. i absolutely agree. If they would have just given one thought to what they were doing and who they were affected, but you know, they had so much hate. I, they didn't care.

Briana: Right.

Eden & Briana: i oh

Eden & Briana: this case would have been a whole lot easier if it would have been like somebody that was actually doing the hurting, you know, um I shouldn't say it would be easier, but it wouldn't be such a surprise. Yeah.

Briana: Yep.

Eden & Briana: What you looking at?

Briana: ah Their photos.

Eden & Briana: Oh.

Briana: Shirley was a big girl.

Eden & Briana: Mm-hmm.

Eden & Briana: Cindy was.

Briana: God dang it.

Eden & Briana: Shirley's the small one. Smaller.

Briana: Yes.

Eden & Briana: i think shirley was Cindy was tall.

Briana: Yeah.

Briana: Yeah. Okay. I'm going to... take NyQuil and pass out.

Eden & Briana: Okay, I will finish this up and get it uploaded. and and

Briana: Let us know your thoughts, concerns, comments, questions. If you just want to bullshit, you know the drill.

Eden & Briana: You know the drill. Miners of Mayhem at gmail.com.

Briana: No video today.

Eden & Briana: Remember what?

Briana: no video today.

Eden & Briana: No video today because Bree's sick. Did you even get to go to work today?

Briana: Yeah. Oh yeah. I toughed it out, but I'm starting to,

Eden & Briana: Pay for it now. Are you getting a fever again?

Briana: I think so.

Eden & Briana: Oh.

Briana: I'm freezing, but like my head is like really hot.

Eden & Briana: Okay.

Briana: So I'm gonna

Briana: call it a day.

Eden & Briana: Yeah, I don't blame you. Okay, so remember we won't be here next week.

Briana: Nope.

Eden & Briana: I probably don't have anything to update anyway because Timothy Hochschild, his trial's been scheduled, so there wouldn't be any good updates anyway. So no episode next week. Um,

Briana: I'll see you when I get back.

Eden & Briana: Yeah, the week after.

Briana: I'll be all suntanned and ready to go.

Eden & Briana: um

Eden & Briana: Okay, we'll see you in a couple weeks, guys.

Briana: love you. Bye.

Eden & Briana: Bye.
