Podcast Format Change Announcement
00:00:00
Speaker
Welcome back to another episode of the podcast. Guys, thank you for stopping by. I really appreciate the people that have listened to my past episodes, reached out, gave me some good feedback. Like, thank you. Thank you for taking the time out of your day to listen to me go on rants. You know, it's pretty cool. It's pretty cool.
00:00:26
Speaker
So I have a lot to talk about. I have a lot to say. And if you're going to take 30 minutes out of your day to listen to me talk, I really do appreciate that. So let's get to it. We're skipping the intro. I have decided that we don't need to do that intro every single time. You guys know the name of the podcast. Unlocking with Adam Pike. You know why you're coming here to listen to it. So the intro, it's a thing in the past.
The Power of Self-Talk and Personal Narratives
00:00:55
Speaker
So something I want to talk about today is how we talk to ourselves every day, the words that we use, the stories that we create about ourselves, you know, the stories that we tell other people about ourselves. I'm also going to be diving into the fitness and I'm going to try to like tie all this together. Okay.
00:01:19
Speaker
And for any of you that have been following me on Instagram, I've been posting a lot lately about how we talk to ourselves. And I actually realized that, you know, I've just been more aware of how I'm speaking, how I'm talking, words that I'm using. And for any of you that remember on my last podcast, I said something on the lines of this,
00:01:47
Speaker
ever since I left my nine to five, um, you know, I don't really know what I'm doing. I'm just figuring it out, but I don't, I don't really, I don't really know what I'm doing. I'm just doing it. Right. Why am I saying this to myself? Like, why is it when people ask me how are things going? I'm saying, honestly, I have no clue what I'm doing, but you know, I'm figuring it out and I'm just going with the flow.
00:02:15
Speaker
That's live. I know exactly what I'm doing. I know exactly what direction I'm going in. I learn from people. Even when I started this podcast, I had no clue how to start a podcast. But you know what? I knew people that have a podcast. There's YouTube. So I just asked a few questions. I listened to a few videos on YouTube. And here we are on my fourth episode into a podcast.
00:02:46
Speaker
For any of you that are saying, you know, I don't know how to do something in 2022 is you're lying because there's so many resources to figure anything out, anything, anything you want to know how to do, go to YouTube and you can learn how to do it in probably 10 minutes, right?
00:03:07
Speaker
So by me saying this, you know, I don't, I don't know what I'm doing.
Overcoming Negative Self-Talk
00:03:11
Speaker
It's almost like I'm putting myself in this stuck situation, stuck mindset of don't know what I'm doing and I'm trying to, trying to figure it out, but I'm just, I don't know how to move forward. Right. And ever since I have, you know, realize I was saying this and, um, you know, thought about it, like, what can, why am I, why am I saying this?
00:03:37
Speaker
I feel like I've got a lot more done since I stopped saying that and realized that I'm not stuck and I know what to do. I also posted a video about having a bad day.
00:03:56
Speaker
So for any of you that missed that, basically I was saying, okay, just picture this. You're at work. Your boss wants you to get this project done at a certain time today. You've got a bunch of other things you're going to do.
00:04:15
Speaker
You got to pick up to pick up the kids at a certain time. Your wife is on you about something. And it just seems like all these things are just piling in. And you're like, why today? Like, why is all these things piling in? Like, man, you just are stressing yourself out. Like, like telling them, like, why me? Why today? Like, this is so stressful. And the more you keep saying that and the more you keep saying you're having a bad day, the more you're going to have a bad day.
00:04:45
Speaker
And when you get home at night, you know, your wife asks you like, how was your day? And you start telling me about the worst day you just had. You're just bringing that negative energy home, right? Instead of talking like that, using those words, you know, when stuff, when days like this happen, you can just be like, man, I've been here before. I've got through it. And I'm going to do it again today. And just like that,
00:05:15
Speaker
You start getting your shit done. You come home. Your wife asks you to have your day, but it was good. You know, it was pretty busy, but it was good. And that's it. You don't bring that negative energy home with you. The words that we use every day has massive impacts on our life. Like massive, massive impacts.
00:05:40
Speaker
And we also created a lot of stories. Like lately I've been talking to a lot of different people.
Challenging Limiting Narratives
00:05:49
Speaker
Like every day I'm talking to people and I'm listening and I'm hearing them say certain things. And there's been a few people that, you know, have created narratives and stories that they just follow. They believe it because they tell themselves this every day and they don't change anything about it because they just believe that this is the way it is. Right?
00:06:11
Speaker
So, you know, for example, somebody just being like, well, I had this happen to me and you know, just because of this, this is why I am the way I am and I can't change it. It's just who I am that no, that is complete bullshit.
00:06:29
Speaker
You're just making this identity that is not who you are. You have the option to change that. You have the option to take a different path. But you're just accepting this story that you told yourself and you're just telling yourself, well, this is it. This is the way I am. And if you don't like it, then deal with it. A lot of people will say that in relationships, too.
00:06:56
Speaker
You know, like, I don't know if they'd be a certain way and maybe they're jealous or something like that, right? And, you know, their partner obviously says something about it and then the other person will say, well, well, I went through this in my life and then, you know, I'm jealous because of that. That's just the way I am now. Okay. Like if that's what you're going to tell yourself, then you're going to be jealous for the rest of your life.
00:07:25
Speaker
and you know how I know this for a fact is because I was jealous 100% and you know what I used to say well well this happened in this relationship and like you know that that's that's why I think this and this happened in this relationship and then you know that's why I think these things so like I'm just traumatized and you know what I mean I just blame other people for how I was like
00:07:53
Speaker
The way that I talk, the way that I think, the stories that I tell myself, it's all attracting everything in my life. Everything. Every bad thing that happened, every good thing that has happened, every job, every relationship, every person, everything that I'm saying, doing, thinking, it's all attracting that, right?
Positive Self-Talk and Its Impact on Others
00:08:19
Speaker
I'm at a point in my life right now where I'm just being more aware of what I'm saying to people and how I'm speaking and how I'm speaking to myself. If you were having, you know, all these bad thoughts, these bad negative thoughts and
00:08:38
Speaker
most likely you're going to be a negative person and that negative talk is going to come out when you speak and it's just going to rub off onto other people. That's not what you want in life. Wouldn't you want to
00:08:54
Speaker
You know, be that person that when you open up your mouth, the other, the other person's like, well, you're just, you're just captured by the energy and like, just the way that they're talking. Like that's, that's how I would want to be. Right. Like I have friends like that that when, when they talk, it's like, holy shit. Like you just shut up and listen. They're not negative. They're just, they're just full of fucking energy. And they're great to be around. They're great to listen to. So.
00:09:25
Speaker
Like I said, how we speak to ourselves and the words that we use every day, it's gonna change the course of your life. So from this moment on, just be more aware of things you're saying. For example, my first episode of this podcast, I said, fuck.
00:09:51
Speaker
I'd say 57 times. Like legit, 57 times. Why? Why was I saying it? There would be times where I would say fuck for no reason. For no reason, I was just saying fucking at the end of a sentence. Like why was I saying that? I listened to it back and I was like, whoa, settle down there Adam. Like why are you swearing so much?
00:10:20
Speaker
So now I'm just being more aware of that. There's no reason for me to be swearing that much. There's not. So I'm just being more aware of that.
Handling Fear and Mindset Shifts
00:10:30
Speaker
I want to talk about this too, right? I want to give you an example of two people on an airplane. One person is sitting there, got his music in, he's jamming, he throws on a movie, falls asleep, they land and he gets up and he goes on a bit of his day and everything's fine.
00:10:49
Speaker
But then you have this other person that they're on the same flight, they're sitting next to each other. They're grabbing the arms of the chair, they're shaking, they're sweating. They're a nervous wreck. They probably took a couple of pills to try to knock themselves out so they didn't have to deal with the stress of the flight. Now, this person has probably never gotten to a plane crash, but
00:11:18
Speaker
maybe just heard stories of planes crashing or seeing something on the news. And they just created this story about how terrified they are of the flight of planes. So every time they get on the plane, you know, they're like, Oh my God. Oh, I don't like these planes. Oh man. What about if this happens? Oh, I heard this on the news before. Oh my God. And they'll just stress themselves out the entire flight.
00:11:47
Speaker
Right. So then the next time they have to fly again, same thing happens. So they're telling them, even when they're not on the flight, right, building up, building up to their flight, they're telling their friends, Oh my God, I really don't like flying. I'd like, and they're just, they're just constantly talking about this. And then when the times they get on the plane, they're freaking the fuck out. But that's the story that they have been telling themselves their entire life.
00:12:16
Speaker
So they have the option to get on that plane and say, hearing through this, this is okay, right? Okay, plane takes off. Ooh, got over that, we're near now. This is not bad. Plane lands, I got through that. All right, that's not bad at all. And then, you know, the next flight, it's a little bit less stressful.
00:12:43
Speaker
So that's what I'm trying to say here is when you create these stories that gets brought with you your entire life, it's just it's just engraved in who you are. You're just stuck with the story and then you just, you know, whenever the time
00:12:59
Speaker
comes up for you to tell this story that that's the story that you tell because you don't know any different but you have the option to change that story and to change how your mind thinks and you know be that guy who gets on the plane and just jams out to his music and listens to a movie goes to sleep gets up goes on with the day you have the choice to to change that right
00:13:26
Speaker
So that's just an example of, you know, two different people, um, two different lives, same flight, and two of them just reacting two different ways. I hope that makes sense. I also want to dive into like fitness and health. Um, I've been talking to a lot of people lately about this and you know, the way people will set their mindset, like set their mind about health and fitness, right?
Mindset Shifts in Health and Fitness Journeys
00:13:57
Speaker
You know, maybe one person had a fitness coach that just went balls to the wall. Got him doing the craziest shit.
00:14:10
Speaker
They were sore. They could not move. They couldn't walk. They were getting them to eat like plain chicken and rice. And now they have told themselves this story. Fitness is not for me. I've already done this. I've done this before. I can't eat like that again. I can't work out like that again.
00:14:30
Speaker
So that's the story that they told themselves their entire life, right? And they maybe, I don't know, maybe they're a hundred pounds overweight. And, you know, they just been, they just been telling themselves that, you know, well, I tried this and it just wasn't for me and I had a bad experience. So, you know, the weight I got on now, that's, that's why I got it on. This is who I am.
00:14:52
Speaker
And that they'll, they'll probably never try again because they had a bad experience. Right. So that's, that's a story that they tell themselves about why they have the weight on right now. Right. And then they're just okay with that because they believe that. But health and fitness, it shouldn't be like that. Like not every trainer is going to put you through hell and back.
00:15:18
Speaker
out. I don't believe someone that drinks maybe 12 coffees a day and a bunch of Pepsi and eats junk food. I don't think the best way to start the mental health and fitness journey is to just cut all that cold turkey and start working on five days a week. That's just not sustainable. That person is going to hate their life. You know what I mean?
00:15:47
Speaker
It's also about the way that you look at it, the way that you look at health and fitness, right? Okay, why am I doing this? Maybe you're doing it because you have children, okay? Tell yourself, I want to be healthy.
00:16:04
Speaker
and live a long life for my children. I want to be able to play with my children when I get older instead of someone that is older, don't work out, got a bad back and there's bad knees and they can't really move around as good, right? So if you tell yourself that, okay, this is why I want to get into fitness is because of my kids. I want to live a long healthy life for my children. I want to be a healthy grandfather.
00:16:33
Speaker
I want to be able to play with my children when I become a grandfather. When you tell yourself that, then you're going to look at fitness different. You're investing in yourself. But if you look at fitness and working out and eating healthy as a chore, and you're like, oh, fuck. I really want to lose this wave of, oh, my god, I hate this. I hate eating this food.
00:17:01
Speaker
Um, you're, you're just, it's just going to be a chore and building up to going, doing your workout. You're going to hate it. You're going to hate every minute of it.
00:17:13
Speaker
But then like most nine chances of 10, once you get the workout done, you're gonna feel a lot better. That's always how it is. Like I remember when I was boxing, right? And I was supposed to have a second fight. Second fight got canceled. I had nothing really to look forward to in boxing, but other than to just train.
00:17:32
Speaker
I had a lot of other things going on. I was playing, I was on two different basketball teams. I was playing basketball a couple times a week. I was working out. And then I also was trying to show up to these classes. And every time I had a class, like I would work all day and I'm like, man, I don't want to go to this fucking class.
00:17:52
Speaker
And I hated it, I'm not gonna lie. But then when I showed up and did the class, I loved it. Loved training, I loved hitting the bag, I loved doing the drills, I loved the people there, and I had fun. But literally, I would tell myself all day, fuck, I don't wanna go to this frickin' class.
00:18:11
Speaker
Oh man, I would just stress myself out about it, right? So if that's your mindset towards losing weight or just living a healthier lifestyle, then you're gonna hate it. But you gotta change that mindset. It's like I'm doing this for me. I'm doing this for me. No one else. I wanna lose this weight for me. I wanna feel better for me. I want my mental state to be better for me. I wanna change my life, right?
00:18:42
Speaker
So for me, fitness is just a lifestyle. That's just it. It's part of who I am. And I know that it makes me feel great. And it's not just about having muscles and looking good. It's not about that. I love working out because it makes my mental state amazing. Like I'm much more,
00:19:09
Speaker
calmer when I work out. I like having something to look forward to. I always do these fitness challenges. I'm doing 75 hard right now and it just gives me something to look forward to. I set a goal that I'm gonna do 75 hard and now I'm doing it for the next 75 days.
00:19:32
Speaker
Um, you know, sometimes I'll set a goal, like, um, you know, I want to do a muscle up. So I work on that, you know, to do the muscle up whole shit. I feel great. I just give myself these little tiny goals, like within fitness. And it just, it makes my overall mental state amazing. And that's how you, that's how you eventually have to look at fitness and health.
00:19:59
Speaker
So the way that you talk about it, the way that you, the word you say about it, um, that's, it's just going to affect how you view health and fitness. So all you have to do is just change your mindset, you know, tell yourself that you're doing it for you.
00:20:21
Speaker
be happy about it. When you make little wins, when you maybe lose five pounds or your clothes is feeling a little better or you just perform like 10 pushups and you couldn't do any at the start. When you get those little wins, you get proud of yourself. Fuck yeah. Fuck yeah. I just did 10 fucking pushups, Adam. And you do feel a lot better.
00:20:51
Speaker
When you train like if I never had health and fitness in my life and Maybe I was a little bit overweight and I wasn't playing sports What in the fuck would I be doing with my life?
The Role of Fitness in Mental Health
00:21:05
Speaker
What would I be doing? I just I really can't picture a life without this. I
00:21:12
Speaker
I really can't. I've definitely leaned on fitness my whole life. It's got me through some shit. Definitely been times where I'm not in a great mental state. I go to the gym and I walk out of that gym feeling wicked, 20 out of 10.
00:21:31
Speaker
a lot better than what I just felt. There's been times I've been sitting in the parking lot crying. I will be honest, there's been times I've been sitting in the good life parking lot crying to myself in my car, trying to go into the gym. I don't know why I was crying, but I do remember that couple times just out there crying. And I walk into that gym,
00:21:56
Speaker
blast that music and just start throwing around weights. And I would walk out being like, fuck yeah. Fuck that guy who was just crying in the parking lot. We're better than that. And trust me, it's okay to cry. It's totally okay to get that out. All I'm saying is, you know, getting those workouts in when you're at that, that point state of mind, it just makes me feel, feel a lot, a lot better.
00:22:27
Speaker
Um, I also want to talk about, um, I really want to talk about this too. It's something I've been talking about on my Instagram is how healthy eating and like a healthier lifestyle can save you money.
Cost-Effective Healthy Eating Habits
00:22:43
Speaker
Now I made a post about this and there was a lot of people like ripped me a new butthole when I said, I said this, listen,
00:22:54
Speaker
If you are trying to be healthy, right? You're, you're, you're cooking at home all the time. You're not eating out. You're not going to BMW and McDonald's and getting pizza 20 times a month, 15. Let's be real. Most people will probably have takeout anywhere from 10 to 15 times a month, right? Do the math on that.
00:23:21
Speaker
Maybe you're going out with your partner. Maybe you're taking your kids with you. That's a lot of money. Okay. Stop doing that for one month. Just cook for good meals at home. You're going to save a lot of money. And there is definitely healthy ways where you can, you know, go stock up at Costco, get a big bag of oats, get a big box of rice. Just keep, you can buy so much things in bulk.
00:23:50
Speaker
And in the end, in result, you're going to save a lot of money instead of going to like sobies and maybe buying, you know, a little thing of.
00:24:03
Speaker
blueberries and strawberries for seven bucks, whatever it is. Go get a big thing of frozen vegetables at Costco, or frozen berries at Costco. That's gonna last you like well over a month, depending on how many people is eating it, you know what I mean? So there's definitely a lot of ways that you can save money. Another way is intermittent fasting. I used to be somebody that
00:24:31
Speaker
would just the whole day would just revolve around food all day long, just eating, eating, eating stuff in my face. And I was in the mindset of like, okay, if I eat all this food and I keep training, I'm going to get huge. And I didn't really, I didn't want to be this big bodybuilder, but like, I just, I thought it'd be a lot bigger.
00:24:59
Speaker
And that, for me, I don't know if I was just eating the wrong, I'm pretty sure I wasn't eating the wrong foods. I was eating pretty healthy. I was just eating a big amount and I was lifting heavy, but I wasn't getting huge. I'm actually bigger now and I'm eating less than what I was before.
00:25:22
Speaker
Yeah. Like literally before my whole day was based around food. Ever since I started doing the intermittent fasting, um, I'm only eating two meals a day and I'm eating from 12 to 12 PM to 8 PM. Right.
Benefits of Intermittent Fasting
00:25:38
Speaker
So my first meal of the day is I'm having a big meal. Like probably it's a lot bigger of a portion than what I would have before, but before I was just eating like maybe six times a day.
00:25:50
Speaker
Maybe four to five meals a day, right? So now I'm just eating twice having two big meals and for the rest of the day, I'm just drinking water and coffee and I have found that since I started doing this my grocery bill has gone down a shit ton shit ton and what it was before I
00:26:13
Speaker
Um, like before I was going through packs and packs and packs of chicken breasts and steaks and like salmon and just, I was going through a lot of meat and now like I go stock up a little bit and I find it like last me for a month or more. Right. So there's definitely healthier ways that you can eat. I mean, not healthier, like smarter ways that you can.
00:26:41
Speaker
diet. There's ways to diet where you can save money. There's a lot of ways you can save money. Eating a bowl of oats with berries. Like I said this before, my girlfriend literally wakes up every single morning and has a bowl of oats with some frozen berries, a scoop of peanut butter,
00:27:06
Speaker
And what else did she put on there? Like a little sprinkle of granola. And that's her breakfast every single day. Like she can survive on those big like oat bags you get at Costco.
00:27:22
Speaker
You know, she can probably survive on that for four months. Like, that's pretty cheap, I gotta say.
Enjoyable and Varied Healthy Eating
00:27:28
Speaker
And she's been putting in some work into the gym. You know, she's been eating quite a lot more than what she has been, and she's definitely putting on some good size in the right areas, if you know what I mean.
00:27:44
Speaker
But anyways guys, getting off topic there. Yeah, there's definitely like a lot better ways to eat healthy. And it doesn't have to be just plain chicken and rice. Like I eat really, really good and I enjoy my food and I still have like tasty, delicious meals. It's just, I do it in a smarter way, right? So there's ways around everything.
00:28:11
Speaker
But I do want to tie this up. I do want to tie his podcast up because I am just starting to ramble right now. And I definitely do that time to time. I start going on these rants and by the end of it, I'm like, what am I even talking about?
00:28:28
Speaker
But I hope I made some sense on this podcast about how we talk to ourselves. So yeah, let's just do a little recap. How you talk to yourself every single day, the words that you use, the stories that you tell yourself every day, all of that is going to play a huge impact on your life. It's going to attract all your relationships. Every single event that happens in your life, you attract it. You are the person that attracts this stuff.
00:28:57
Speaker
are good. And that's all about how you talk and think, stories you tell yourself and stories you tell others. And if you are looking to get into the health health and fitness world and you do want to change your life, then you have to start thinking about that in a more positive way. You have to shift your mindset to
00:29:21
Speaker
I need to do this to look better to I'm doing this to feel better. Right? Because at the end of the day, if you're just if you're feeling good about yourself, and you know, you're putting in the work.
00:29:35
Speaker
Your mental state is better than that. That's that's the goal just to feel overall feel better like in a mental state doesn't matter about you know, like you shouldn't be on the scale all the time. Just looking at I didn't I didn't lose one pound today. Fuck. That's that's that's that's a terrible way of looking at it at your your fitness journey. Just you know, just I'm feeling good today. I'm feeling good. I did my workout. I feel good.
00:30:05
Speaker
and you just keep that going, you just be consistent and eventually the weight will fall off. You don't even need to worry about the weight. You don't need to worry about that at all. So be more aware of the words that you say and how you talk to yourself and just see how that plays a part in your life. So I hope you took something from this today.
00:30:31
Speaker
And thank you for coming by and listening to this episode. And until the next one, have a good day.
