Speaker: Wer hätte gedacht, dass wir heute Abend hier ein paar Jahre im Gravels-Eventer, das in den USA in Emporia, Kansas zu beher.
Speaker: Natürlich, ich spreche über Unbound und speziell die Unbound 200-Miles oder 320-und-something Kilometer-Miles.
Speaker: Das ist, dass es, wahrscheinlich, die wichtigste Räste in der Gravel-Kalender jedes Jahr gibt.

Speaker: And I can already let you know that it comes with a super stacked field.
Speaker: Everybody who is in gravel racing and many names who are not regularly in gravel racing are coming to Emporia to race this main event.
Speaker: Today, I'm actually going to do a solo episode today.
Speaker: Because, yeah, because why not?
Speaker: I just published my The Gravel Stack newsletter where I did the preview of the race in written.
Speaker: And I figured I would bring you the updates right into your ear if you are a Grazing Podcast listener.
Speaker: So you also get to know what's going on.
Speaker: So, let me start by talking about the conditions that you find out there in Emporia, Kansas.
Speaker: In case you're

Speaker: Little Egypt won as the most infamous or the most, I don't know actually what we called the award, but it was the segment, the most remarkable thing in any race.
Speaker: I, however, heard some whispers that the gravel in the segment has been altered, changed, and allegedly it is no longer as rough and as sketchy as it used to be.

Speaker: Und das ist deshalb, wenn man auf den Wetterforecasts auf den Wetterforkast sites will, wenn man die Info findet.
Speaker: Aber, wie du schon wissen, Wetterforkasting, speziell in den letzten Tagen, sogar in 2025, wo wir all diese great Technologie haben, ist nicht so genau so genau.
Speaker: In der Endeffektion, wir wissen nicht, aber ich habe viele Wetterforecasting sites und meine Meinung ist, dass vielleicht ein Mutt ist, vielleicht nicht.

Speaker: And her wheel was completely stuck after she rode through it.
Speaker: So, yeah, today there can be some sections that are muddy.
Speaker: However, if the next days are predominantly dry, it will probably not be a mud fest as I believe two, three years ago, two years ago.
Speaker: So that is the weather forecasting side.
Speaker: Of course, the other topic that can happen on this track where you have basically no trees, no shade is heat.
Speaker: We will also have to see how hot it is, but that is more of an...

Speaker: And therefore, I'm stoked and I will definitely tune in to watch the race live as you would have probably guessed.
Speaker: On a professional note, so to speak, I'm also very curious what the production quality is going to be, how they approach the live stream.
Speaker: So we now saw a fair number of live streams, including the Trucker live stream, including the Garmin Gravel Worlds live stream.
Speaker: And they were different experiences.
Speaker: And I think we are nudging closer and closer to nailing the format.

Speaker: So the way how I'm going to do my predictions or my list of contenders is in buckets.
Speaker: Yes, I put racers into three neat little buckets and there are some rules which I defined them myself.
Speaker: So if I break them, these are my own.
Speaker: Really great if you can do your own rules.
Speaker: But they have names.
Speaker: The first bucket is called the top favorites.
Speaker: The second bucket is called the podium contenders and the third bucket are wildcards.
Speaker: I think that's pretty self-explanatory naming, but just in case...
Speaker: Hier we go.
Speaker: The top favorites are the racers, where I think the possibility of them winning definitely is the highest.
Speaker: I think if you are a betting man or woman, these will or should get you the lowest odds.
Speaker: Of course, you will probably see mostly familiar names in there.
Speaker: The second bucket, the podium contenders, are those racers who...
Speaker: Ich denke, werden in der Karriere in der Karriere in der Karriere, wenn es umgekehrt ist.

Speaker: There is a certain element of randomness to the race which can lead to unexpected outcomes.
Speaker: And I assume race dynamics will also play an increasingly important role.
Speaker: So if you go maybe just 3-4 years back then Unbound being so long and attritional was something that was unabhängig.
Speaker: Often, not always, but often won by a solo rider who just happened to be the strongest man or woman on the given day.
Speaker: That has completely changed and continues to change because as we talk about often on here, gravel, especially at the top end of the field, is getting more competitive.
Speaker: Everybody is training more and harder and more and more riders are
Speaker: Better racers come into the sport, including, of course, guys from World Tour, but also here from the European Pro Conti and Continental race scene start venturing into gravel just because the sport grew, became more relevant.
Speaker: And that means it is just getting worse.

Speaker: Wir werden, ich glaube, sehen, eine Runde, dass es länger als ein Monument auf der Straße in Kilometern und viel länger in der Duration ist, weil es auf der Straße viel länger dauert, ist es viel länger, die Speed ist es schneller.
Speaker: will be pretty classics like racing.
Speaker: I assume we will have different breakaway attempts, we will have lead groups where attacks happen and unfold because the way how you win unbounded is very different for different types of riders.

Speaker: By now, I assume everybody following gravel racing is familiar with G. She is a...
Speaker: Engine a Monster, one of the top competitors in the sport.
Speaker: She last year placed in second place behind only Rosa Klösa from a I believe it was a nine women group sprint, reduced group sprint and she usually would be in a higher bucket, maybe in the top favorites bucket.
Speaker: However, as you by now probably have heard, she

Speaker: The start list still has her name on it.
Speaker: So assuming that in fact G is going to race at unbound, probably even she doesn't know how good she's going to be on the day during the race, which renders her the perfect wildcard.
Speaker: I think with the perfect run-up and preparation for the race, she definitely has all the ingredients to win it.
Speaker: Will she have good legs?
Speaker: Will she even start?
Speaker: We have to find out, but don't be surprised if you find the name Gerike Schreuz on the podium or even winning the race.
Speaker: Next up, there is a racer that is not only familiar to people following gravel racing, but also to people who follow US road racing.
Speaker: Because she is currently the defending national gravel champion.
Speaker: But just yesterday, she actually finished second in the US Nationals road race as well, where she sprinted for the victory against reigning Olympic champion Kristen Faulkner, who ended up beating her.
Speaker: Of course, I'm talking about Lauren Stevens.
Speaker: And Lauren Stevens is on a pretty good run this year so far, even though she has mostly been road and not gravel racing.
Speaker: A few of her results include the win of the Grawler, the big elite road race at Levi's Gran Fondo, which we also could watch, by the way, on YouTube.
Speaker: And there she beat a lot of the well-known gravel pros, predominantly the US ones, including notably Sofia Gomez-Vija Faniye.
Speaker: Sie also dann went on to do a fair bit of stage racing and competed in two US UCI stage races of the 2.2 variety.
Speaker: I, to be honest, didn't check out all the competition.
Speaker: Of course, we are not talking about World Tour competition here, but still...

Speaker: By the way, I believe I didn't mention it when I explained the rules, but there is a maximum of three riders that I can place in any of the buckets.

Speaker: But here we have three and the third name is Morgan Aguirre.

Speaker: But I think she has so far the best season of her life.
Speaker: Having added another win after the Hills.
Speaker: As well when she won the UCI Monaco gravel race.
Speaker: Which...

Speaker: If you heard me talk in the, essentially, the Par Racing Special Edition that we did here after the Trucker with three of the four winners, which all were from Par Racing, incredible if you think about it, then essentially everybody explained that they don't
Speaker: Deploy team tactics.
Speaker: That they all more or less race for themselves.
Speaker: And I think it's also.
Speaker: If you look a bit behind the curtain.
Speaker: It makes a lot of sense.
Speaker: Because the racers on par racing.
Speaker: All still have their own sponsors.
Speaker: They are essentially.
Speaker: Privateers and Power Racing provides mostly infrastructure around them like travel expenses and so on and so forth.
Speaker: But it definitely doesn't operate like a World Tour team.
Speaker: And so everybody is still motivated to get results for themselves.
Speaker: Still, they will not race actively against each other in most circumstances.
Speaker: And given that they are so strong as a team,
Speaker: This can, depending on how the dynamics on the day unfold, create advantages.
Speaker: For instance, if somebody is in a breakaway from par racing, then all the other people from par have a good excuse to not pull and just sit in in a chase group and so on.
Speaker: In Morgan's case, I could for instance see that she actually is part of a breakaway move if we happen to get one in the women's field last year.
Speaker: If you remember, it was essentially attritional and the lead group just became smaller and smaller and smaller as the race went on.
Speaker: But if there are moves, I could see her being part of one and in general...
Speaker: Ich denke, sie ist eine sehr gute Zeit und eine sehr gute Zeit ist definitiv eine Möglichkeit für sie.
Speaker: Next up ist die Podium Contenders-Buckett.
Speaker: Und jetzt bin ich ehrlich, wir sind jetzt auch in der Territory, wo es wirklich schwer für mich zu sagen, wer geht in dieser Bucke und deshalb nicht in der Top Favorites Bucke.
Speaker: Weil, zu sagen, alle die Nämsten, die du hier in ein Moment hören, sind Great Racers und definitiv auch...
Speaker: could win unbound and in some cases actually have won unbound before.
Speaker: But I only do have three slots per bucket and therefore decisions have to be made, hard decisions have to be made.
Speaker: And that is why Annika Langwardt is the first racer in here.
Speaker: Now depending on a...
Speaker: how long you've been listening to the racing show and be where you are based and what your cycling background is, you will either say, ooh, shouldn't she be a top contender?
Speaker: Or probably you will say, who's that?
Speaker: Of course, Annika Langward, she's a legend, but mostly...
Speaker: mit einem mountainbikern background, marathon, cross-country, mountainbikern mostly, aber auch ein sehr erfolgreicher Road Racer, including Danish national champion, including sehr stark finishes in several Monuments of the World Tour in her, I think, 2019 season, the Seoul season, where she rode World Tour.
Speaker: Sie ist eine sechs-time Cape Epic winner.
Speaker: Und dieses Jahr, so far in meinem Buch, sie hat die Krone für die most impressive performance, wenn sie utterly dominated a sehr strong field at Santa Val, der opening race der Gravel-Earth-Series in Europa.

Speaker: And she definitely has a lot of the ingredients it takes to win a race like Unbound.
Speaker: So why isn't she in the top favorites bucket?
Speaker: In essence, because of two things.
Speaker: For one, the Trucker 200 that she did earlier this month, where she placed in third position behind only Rosa Klösa and Sofia Gomez-Vijafanje, who by the way is also a teammate on Specialized Off-Road.
Speaker: was, if my research isn't mistaken, the longest one-day race that she ever competed in, both in terms of length, in kilometers and duration, because that was a six-hour-something race.
Speaker: And of course, if we talk about unbound, we are talking about
Speaker: An additional 120 km.
Speaker: And that means 3, 4 more hours than her longest race ever.
Speaker: Of course, she's good in stage racing, which we know from, for instance, the Cape Epic.
Speaker: It's a different kind of endurance, though, because you have the recovery in between the different stages.
Speaker: So, hier ist etwas, was wir nicht wissen, weil sie nicht mehr hat.
Speaker: Natürlich, wenn sie auf der Start-Line ist, ich denke, eine Pro, eine Legend, wie sie kommt, und ich glaube, dass sie die Enduranz für heute ist.

Speaker: She's actually stronger if she isn't injured.
Speaker: I don't think her preparation was too impacted.
Speaker: She's in this bucket, because I only have three slots in the top one, but I'm also not surprised if she ends up winning.
Speaker: That's the level of competitor we find here already.
Speaker: Next up, 2023 Unbound winner, past champion Karolin Shiv.
Speaker: So Karo is one of the strongest women out there.
Speaker: This year, her season hasn't been as great as you came to expect.
Speaker: By her standards, she only finished sixth at the Trucker 200.
Speaker: But...
Speaker: It turns out, because like a week later, there was an Instagram post where she disclosed that she actually raced with a broken rib, which at the time of the trucker hadn't been diagnosed yet.
Speaker: And she was just in pain.
Speaker: And so she couldn't go as deep as she usually would do on that day.
Speaker: Racing 200 km with a broken rib, finishing 6th in a pretty stacked field is still a great performance.
Speaker: And now she has healed.
Speaker: She's on the record saying the rib is getting much better.
Speaker: And obviously as a former champion, she is also coming for the win.
Speaker: It's a highlight, a race in her training calendar.
Speaker: She's going to try to peak.
Speaker: und das bedeutet, dass sie eine force zu be reckoned with ist.

Speaker: I don't think that anybody is going to completely ride for the other.
Speaker: But still, the tactical options that they have create opportunities that they probably otherwise wouldn't have.

Speaker: Third and last name in the podium contenders bucket is a guy who, well, if you would want to use a bit of snark, you could say he's the definition of a podium contender because he ends up on the podium of most races he starts.
Speaker: But rarely does he end on the top step of the podium.
Speaker: I'm talking about Peter Vakoc.
Speaker: He is something like the Mr. Consistent of European gravel racing.
Speaker: It's really impressive.
Speaker: You will find so many second and third places if you check out his Pro Cycling Stats profile.
Speaker: But he just won...
Speaker: The Grellock, the Scottish UCI race, which is definitely one of the cooler races on the UCI calendar.
Speaker: Of course, a very different race from Unbound.
Speaker: Very hard to compare.
Speaker: But Vakoc definitely knows how to do well at Unbound as well, because he already finished second there in the year that Keegan won.
Speaker: Keegan beat Wackoc in the sprint.
Speaker: He can do well in this race.
Speaker: He does well in most races he starts at.
Speaker: In the piece that I wrote, in the preview piece that I wrote, I actually said, look, he's a bit like Wout van Aert this season.
Speaker: Does very well in most races, just rarely wins.
Speaker: Let's see if he can maybe win a big one.
Speaker: Don't be surprised if he's on the podium at all, because that is just what he does.
Speaker: Last but not least,

Speaker: In fact, winning Unbound is definitely something that Keegan can do in 2025.
Speaker: It's something that he has done in 2023.
Speaker: We know the engine he has and how good he is.
Speaker: It's not the most optimal course for him.

Speaker: One of them being the fact that he told me on the podcast that he doesn't like mountain bike tires, doesn't think they are necessary.
