Speaker: Ich bin Thomas und du bist auf The Gracing Podcast, wo dieses Woche wir sprechen über die Gravel Bubble.

Speaker: Und ich habe nicht über das Thema gesprochen, aber ich habe Madeline, better known as Maddie Nutt, auf die Show zu sprechen.

Speaker: So we at some point had a phone conversation for different reasons and we started chatting about whether or not we are approaching a kind of bubble state.

Speaker: Has gravel grown too quickly, become too big and do we therefore fear that the bubble may burst anytime soon?

Speaker: Und dann haben wir gesagt, hey, wir können ein Podcast machen und reden über das, weil es ein interessanter Thema ist.

Speaker: Und so haben wir.

Speaker: Also, es ist nicht ein Definitive Analysis oder Data-Beddeckt-Reporting auf die Situation in der globalen Gravel Racing Circuit.

Speaker: Aber ich denke, es war ziemlich interessant, dass wir beide das gleiche

Speaker: feeling, getting the same vibe from the scene that there is maybe something to the extent of a bubble happening and we explored it in the conversation which I hope you will enjoy.

Speaker: But before we get there I want to cover a few topics.

Speaker: If you've been listening along here

Speaker: You probably also follow me on the other channels and maybe, maybe it occurred to you that I was rather quiet over the last 7 plus days.

Speaker: And that is for a good reason.

Speaker: I went down a deep, deep rabbit hole.

Speaker: Actually, one of the rabbit holes that, let me put it like this.

Speaker: Maybe you know these projects where at the beginning you think,

Speaker: This could be a cool idea.

Speaker: Let's get rolling.

Speaker: And then while you do it, you realize how big of a fucking project that actually was.

Speaker: And if you would have known, you probably wouldn't have started in the first place.

Speaker: But I had started it and I finished it.

Speaker: I'm talking about

Speaker: Power Rankings.

Speaker: I don't know if you're familiar with the concept.

Speaker: If you are like me a big sports fan and probably a bit into US sports in general then certainly you've come across Power Rankings before.

Speaker: And I wanted to do some for the gravel pros.

Speaker: The male, the men and the women who race gravel.

Speaker: And I assembled them.

Speaker: Und ich werde nicht die Ranking hier nicht geben, denn sie werden in den nächsten Tagen über den nächsten Tagen auf EscapeCollective.com.

Speaker: So, watch out for sie.

Speaker: Not everybody is going to like every position, but I honestly, and this I can promise you, I didn't take things lightly.

Speaker: I sweat over many of the decisions.

Speaker: I had conversations in the background with people like from Paul For, Soli Spirit and others about individual riders.

Speaker: And well, it was a whole lot of work.

Speaker: It's going to drop soon.

Speaker: Watch out for these.

Speaker: And then in other news...

Speaker: An Instagram post von Santa Cruz kamen, dass die HitSquad, die Santa Cruz HitSquad, wird nicht mehr sein.

Speaker: Das ist wahrscheinlich nicht so, wenn ihr folgt.

Speaker: Hier haben wir gesprochen, Keegan Swenson zu Specialized, allegedly, bevor ihr gehört diese rumors gehört.

Speaker: Of course, we didn't know and could only assume what would happen to the hit squad.

Speaker: And now we know the team is going to end.

Speaker: Santa Cruz is folding it.

Speaker: At which point, let's be real and look back for a moment because indeed it's the end of an era.

Speaker: They launched the team in 2021, which is long before most brands started.

Speaker: Not only were active in Greville, but I don't think anyone considered teams in Greville at this point in time.

Speaker: And they took it seriously, of course, driven by the fact that there was a Keegan Swenson, who you could already see is very, very good in the sport.

Speaker: Even though, look at this time, he hadn't won lifetime Grand Prix.

Speaker: Yet the lifetime Grand Prix wasn't even a thing.

Speaker: wie es ist heute.

Speaker: So, sie wirklich investiert in den Sport und gebaut.

Speaker: Und ich denke, sie hat es in einer Weise gemacht.

Speaker: Die Name, die Titel, es war cool, es war wirklich gut.

Speaker: Gravel war sehr gut für die Spiel, wenn man es so sagen kann.

Speaker: Und heute, du hörst die Talk über Domestik, wie Domestik kommt zu Gravel.

Speaker: Aber in Fakt,

Speaker: He had a really good brand within Gravel.

Speaker: But well, life moves on.

Speaker: And so Santa Cruz has no hit squad anymore.

Speaker: Let's take a moment and look where the riders that were on the team are going to be.

Speaker: Keegan, we don't know yet officially.

Speaker: We heard all the specialized rumors, so...

Speaker: Let's see what will come out in a couple of weeks from now.

Speaker: Tobin

Speaker: Aber...

Speaker: Das ist mein take.

Speaker: Und dann, lastly, Ruth Holcomb.

Speaker: Ich bin auch nicht aware...

Speaker: of her setup for next season, but something that is at least, I think positive for her.

Speaker: And mind you, she won the U23 Lifetime Grand Prix in rather dominant fashion.

Speaker: She received the SheSense Foundation's Strava Strive for More grant.

Speaker: Das macht mich glauben, dass sie sich alles auszupassen hat für ihre Lifetime Grand Prix in 2026.

Speaker: Aber ja, das sind die Riders, die End der HitSquad.

Speaker: Und letztendlich, die All Gravel Awards results sind in.

Speaker: Die Fan-Vote hat sich geöffnet.

Speaker: Und ich habe keine

Speaker: who won each and every award by now.

Speaker: But I'm not going to tell you.

Speaker: It's not because I'm mean, well maybe I'm a bit mean-spirited today, but no, it's just because we are going to announce the awards one by one in the upcoming weeks.

Speaker: And the best way to make sure that you are not going to miss them is either follow the outside or the gravel stack Instagram account.

Speaker: Because we are going to make all the announcements there.

Speaker: And then also there will be stuff about it in the newsletter and in other places.

Speaker: But yeah, we want that all the winners have a chance to get a bit of the spotlight, quote unquote spotlight, obviously.

Speaker: But yeah, we will announce them one by one, starting at the end of the year and moving into the early 2026.

Speaker: So, watch out for who gets these awards.

Speaker: And now I'm joined by Mehdi Nutt.

Speaker: Hey, thanks for taking the time to come on.

Speaker: Thanks for having me.

Speaker: So the story of this podcast is essentially, we don't know each other super well, but we had a call for different reasons the other day and came, started talking about

Speaker: the current situation in professional gravel at large.

Speaker: And then one term came up in our conversation and it was like the bubble, the gravel bubble.

Speaker: Is there a gravel bubble?

Speaker: And I figured that is an interesting question because I've been thinking along those lines and hearing stories from different people along those lines for a bit.

Speaker: Und wir haben in dem Moment gesagt, hey, wir machen einen Episode und sprechen ein bisschen über was geht in der Sport.

Speaker: Denn diese sind sehr interessant times und nicht nur für die besten reasons.

Speaker: Do you remember, wie wir auf den Rekord gekommen sind, wenn wir auf der Rekord gesprochen haben?

Speaker: I think it was because the Graveler Series had just announced their calendar and Lifetime had just announced their athletes and I think it was off the back of being like there's so many events going on and people are having to start choosing what they're going to do.

Speaker: Is there too many events?

Speaker: Are people very confused about the races that they're producing, who they're producing them for, what's happening with the professionalism of the sport in terms of

Speaker: Say, for example, Graveler Series doing one of their races a week after Unbound, things like that.

Speaker: I think it was off the back of that that ignited this conversation about, yeah, do we think that this is sustainable or is something going to happen?

Speaker: Ich denke, also die mass participation.

Speaker: Weil, at the end of the day, die die Worte der Worte passieren ist, weil Gravel Normies sind.

Speaker: Funny that you mention this and start with the UCI series.

Speaker: By the time people will listen to our episode here, they will also be able or already might have listened to the episode.

Speaker: We just did like a round table sit down with Erwin Verfecken, Rosa Klösa, Paul Voss and myself and talked about what's happening in the UCI series, what happened last season.

Speaker: I mean, there were many topics from how it went on

Speaker: around the globe, not only in Europe.

Speaker: As a professional rider yourself and somebody who is well connected in the scene, talking to many riders, what is the whispers on the ground that you are currently hearing about this and what are your thoughts on the calendar next year and the development at large?

Speaker: Und das ist mainly, weil die World Championships in Australien will be

Speaker: Das ist die größte Gravel-Gravel-Race der all den UCI-Welt-Championshallen wir heute haben.

Speaker: Und ich würde gerne eine gewisse Zeit für das Rennen.

Speaker: Und ich denke, es wird in Australien ein bisschen anders sein, als es in den letzten Enden gibt, wenn es in Deutschland und Holland ist.

Speaker: All die Dutch roadriders showen.

Speaker: And I don't think they're going to necessarily fly over to Australia for a while, Trump's there.

Speaker: So, yeah, I think it'll be a really interesting race.

Speaker: And for me, that's why I'm going to really look at the series this next year.

Speaker: But I think there's so much going on.

Speaker: And like, for example, the UCI race clashing with this tracker, I can't do that race if I'm going to do the tracker.

Speaker: So it's, yeah, it's a really tricky one.

Speaker: They kind of went for Gravel Earth mostly and did a couple of UCI races mostly to ensure a good starting position at the World Championships.

Speaker: And now this year it changed a bit with the developments in the Gravel Earth series and now the bigger UCI calendar.

Speaker: And so certainly it changed.

Speaker: es ist für die Pros.

Speaker: Und vielleicht ist es ein guter Moment, um ein paar Schritte zurück zu nehmen.

Speaker: In Gravel Racing und der Geschichte, so viel hat sich in mehr als fünf Jahren passiert.

Speaker: Ich würde sagen, in den letzten drei bis fünf Jahren, da war so viel growth.

Speaker: Und alle haben, wie die UCI, die Space in 2022, für den ersten Mal.

Speaker: Und

Speaker: Und es fingen mit 11 Races.

Speaker: Jetzt sind wir 45.

Speaker: Okay, the calendar of Gravel Earth Series shrunk because they kicked out a lot of the races, but many of these independent races they partnered with still exist.

Speaker: Only a small number has moved to the UCI calendar.

Speaker: And we had an explosion in races and events everywhere.

Speaker: And now from conversations I have with promoters, it has become much more difficult to sell out.

Speaker: And it's probably only the top rated races, which is maybe less than a handful.

Speaker: I don't know if you have more insights on the promoter front.

Speaker: I didn't check if I could still buy like a Trucker 200 or 360 entry right now.

Speaker: Unbound and the Tracker.

Speaker: I would say UCI races to a certain degree where like

Speaker: Brands really do value performances at certain events.

Speaker: So I'd say it's actually really hard as an athlete at the moment when selecting your calendar to think what's actually most important to my sponsors.

Speaker: Like which of these, because there's so much going on.

Speaker: And like, as you said, you could focus on Lifetime, you could focus on Gravel Earth, you could focus on UCI, you could do other, just there's other races that are like,

Speaker: und nicht ein Teil eines solchen, so für den Rift in Iceland.

Speaker: Ja, was die meisten value to den Sponsors?

Speaker: Like you say, it's a simple economic reality.

Speaker: There is supply, there is demand.

Speaker: And there are no made-for-pros-only races right now.

Speaker: I don't know if they will come, but because they are not a thing...

Speaker: The lifeblood of most events out there is the entry fee revenue stream, which also then if you have enough entries, you will be able to sell more sponsorship, which for most of the races out there is based about the number of people on site.

Speaker: Because the majority of the races doesn't have the media game that liberates or would liberate the event from having to sell as many entries as possible.

Speaker: Because once you have a live stream and you have a great media production, then sponsors will also hop on to be part of this and the exposure that you're getting.

Speaker: And the pros will select it for this.

Speaker: But the majority isn't in that range.

Speaker: Everything is a race, but effectively for most people it's an event.

Speaker: And in Europe we have much more events that are not races where there is no time taken.

Speaker: But I know many of my cycling friends don't do races, but they participate in these events which are more social in nature and they have all the vibes.

Speaker: And then the UCI races in particular,

Speaker: But I think it's also true to the limited amount of Global Earth Series races I've been to.

Speaker: They also are quite performance driven from the crowd that is there and so on.

Speaker: So I think we have this distinction, which is all more crumbed into one and the same events over in the US.

Speaker: Where at Unbound you will have the videos about all buddies on bikes, for instance.

Speaker: They race Unbound, even though of course they don't compete for top positions maybe, but it's all in one event.

Speaker: And we have this distinction, which...

Speaker: probably matters.

Speaker: But now we have all these races and events and people can only do a handful.

Speaker: So as a race promoter, you either really have to find your niche because you do it hyper-local or you create something that is very distinct, either because it's premium or I don't know, maybe because it's cheap, like with other products as well.

Speaker: But to me, I fear that

Speaker: The reality is most people cannot afford doing this repeatedly.

Speaker: And I fear we might be at this point.

Speaker: And matter of factly, I'm starting to reach out to people on the organizer front

Speaker: to have more conversations because I'm interested if that is also their perception.

Speaker: But so far, let's put it like this, most people who organize races that I have talked to so far, they don't tell me that, yeah, it sells out very quickly.

Speaker: Everybody is like kind of more struggling than it used to be the case in gravel.

Speaker: Strongly assume that you're right and that there are profitable races, which is also fair enough.

Speaker: I think everybody deserves their profit if they put the work into it and they build something great, but it's not

Speaker: automatically the case just because you have a gravel race in 2025 that you will be able to turn a profit.

Speaker: I think to the contrary because there is more and more races and people have not that much time for racing.

Speaker: Normie people in particular.

Speaker: And as you said, even for you pros, it's becoming challenging to pick and choose between all the stuff that is on the menu right now.

Speaker: So that is of course the core of the sport because without the events there cannot be gravel racing.

Speaker: By the way, I think one scenario that I don't fear at all is a world in which gravel riding and even gravel racing is going to go away.

Speaker: I don't think that is going to happen.

Speaker: Ich bin mir, ich bin old jetzt.

Speaker: Und

Speaker: Ich habe keine Freunde gesagt, weil ich sonst was Hip Hop gehalten und into Skating hatte.

Speaker: Und ich habe niemandem gesagt, dass ich jetzt eine Dropbar-Bike war, weil es nicht cool war.

Speaker: Und ich denke, das hat sich massiv verändert.

Speaker: Und ich sehe viel mehr, nicht mehr Teenagers, aber mehr Jung-People auf Bikes.

Speaker: Und natürlich, es hat sich auch viel mehr faszinierend, zu schreiben, die ich nicht mehr,

Speaker: Like once something is popular and you see many people doing it, the upper boundary of the market, I don't know if we know where it is, but there is growth potential.

Speaker: And to maybe segue into this, the market environment aspect of a potential gravel bubble.

Speaker: So I also looked up some numbers.

Speaker: Maybe I saw the same projections that you just referenced.

Speaker: In Germany, we have this business association, the ZIV.

Speaker: It's like the business association of the Zweigrad, the what would you call it?

Speaker: The two-wheel industry, essentially the bike industry, including e-bike stuff.

Speaker: And they are the only numbers that I'm aware of that actually...

Speaker: report sales numbers only from the German manufacturers, but there I think all the major brands are included.

Speaker: And 2023 to 2024, year over year, there was a 33% growth in the category of gravel and road bikes.

Speaker: It's by the way, specifically put in this order gravel and road, not road and gravel, because

Speaker: Ich habe in 2022 angefangen, also die erste Jahr in der Gravel World Series.

Speaker: Oh, nein, die Jahr bevor, 2021.

Speaker: So die Jahr bevor der Gravel World Series.

Speaker: Aber ich war nicht bis 2022.

Speaker: So, take uns zurück zu diesem Zeitpunkt.

Speaker: Oder vielleicht 2023, eigentlich.

Speaker: Okay.

Speaker: Yeah, I'm now forgetting how many years I've been racing.

Speaker: Well, a few at least.

Speaker: So, because take us back to like the first contract negotiations that you were doing, because even though there was a good number of people in gravel at this time, it still felt as an observer that like brands were still looking to get their

Speaker: Gravel Pros and some brands were earlier in the space than others.

Speaker: And then there was this time, which is maybe around this 21 to 23 time range, where it felt like the brands were really looking to find their Gravel boys and girls for their team.

Speaker: And that was the priority.

Speaker: And so if you as a relatively good rider went in there,

Speaker: you did get a contract and maybe not a high paying one like the top earners in the sport because I think that is also fair mentioning.

Speaker: If you had great results, gravel was very, very good in the last two or three years for the men and women alike.

Speaker: But that is really like the top people with the top results.

Speaker: If you want unbound

Speaker: You scored like six figure contracts as a consequence of this, for instance.

Speaker: But we are not necessarily talking only about the top end, but more like the average pro athlete.

Speaker: That is where it's getting, where I'm also hearing that it's getting much tougher to find contracts, even if you are still a very good rider, but you just didn't win unbound.

Speaker: Das ist das Segment von Pros wir sprechen hier.

Speaker: Ich denke, die ersten Jahre ich in der UCI World Series war, ich glaube, ich glaube, es war wirklich niemand oder viel Geld, oder viel Geld aus dem Gravel.

Speaker: Ich glaube, es war vielleicht ein paar Riders, aber es war mehr Influencers.

Speaker: So, das erste Jahr, und ich bin nur über Europa hier, in den USA, die Leute waren definitiv Geld.

Speaker: So just in Europe, think about that first year I did the World Series.

Speaker: I don't think there were many people I was racing who were earning money out of gravel and I was earning money out of gravel that year.

Speaker: Then the next year I negotiated a small amount of money, but not enough to...

Speaker: live on enough to just about cover racing so like kind of semi-professional and I'd say then you did see a few people there were people who were in a similar position to me or like on teams where the team was paying for their expenses but people weren't being paid and then I think it was so that's then 2023 so I would say it's only really been 2024 and 2025 when people have been like salaried or like

Speaker: Ja, me too, I guess.

Speaker: But then to make this viable and work with the sponsors plus private life, that is not so easy.

Speaker: So let's talk a bit more about the stories that you're hearing and of course you don't have to name names, but

Speaker: Wer hier ist, dass die Zeit für die Zukunft 2026-Jährigen zu still close Sponsorship deals ist?

Speaker: Und wo ist, in terms of performance und level of the athlete, der cutoff point?

Speaker: Und wie sieht das cutoff aus?

Speaker: Ist es dann, ja, die Team werden immer noch pay

Speaker: If we're talking about teams and not the full privateer model will still pay for travel expenses, but you will not get any, they will give you just material travel expenses, no money, or is the cutoff point even there is no support at all?

Speaker: Ich denke, ich weiß nicht, dass ich einen neuen Support zu haben, oder ist, wie er, wie, nachdem, nachdem, nachdem, nachdem.

Speaker: Aber ich denke, es ist mehr, wie, nachdem, nachdem, nachdem, nachdem.

Speaker: Aber ich würde sagen, interestingly...

Speaker: Athletes who are more multifaceted in terms of they do a content creation element are ones who are finding it less difficult, which I think makes complete sense to me because at the end of the day, where is your salary coming from?

Speaker: The marketing department of a brand.

Speaker: So are you a good value for the marketing department?

Speaker: Well, actually, yes, if you get good race results, but what's a good race result if nobody sees it?

Speaker: And actually, if you can...

Speaker: tell a great story and like

Speaker: you can build a community of people who kind of trust your recommendations, your equipment, like trust your opinions, then actually that's maybe more valuable, if not, or definitely as valuable as like proving that the equipment performs well in certain races.

Speaker: So I think actually, not that we're going back to where like only influencers were making money out of gravel, because I don't think it's at that point.

Speaker: I think there's definitely like a,

Speaker: All athletes are having to make content, whether they like it or not.

Speaker: It's in contracts.

Speaker: If you are a purely performance-focused athlete, you will still have, you have to do X amount of reels, X amount of posts in your contracts.

Speaker: So...

Speaker: Everyone is going down that route, but I think at the end where people are maybe not winning Armbound, they then are having to have some sort of content creation, social media presence to kind of complement their racing to show that value to sponsors.

Speaker: One, my ability and technique and tactical skills and stuff like that, improving from racing lots.

Speaker: Also personal enjoyment.

Speaker: I love racing, but also the exposure.

Speaker: If I'm going to more races, I get more exposure.

Speaker: I can make more content.

Speaker: And I think that's then, it's kind of an investment, isn't it?

Speaker: In like,

Speaker: Future sponsorship deals.

Speaker: So I've always spent, given myself less money and put more into my racing, but other privateers don't necessarily function in that way and say like, oh, I am taking home X amount and then anything above is my race budget.

Speaker: But yeah, it's an interesting, you have to just kind of, it's so personal about how you want to do it.

Speaker: Und natürlich, du fall in die Kategorie von Leuten, die sehr starken soziale und Content-Games haben.

Speaker: Und wie du sagst, Racing ist auch eine Content-Creation-Opportunität für dich, die du sagst, wie du sagst, into ein Investment.

Speaker: Denn once dein Content reaches mehr Menschen, es macht dich mehr für Sponsors und kann sogar in deinem eigenen Revenue-Stream.

Speaker: Although I would say, I think people think that there's more revenue gained from YouTube than there is.

Speaker: So I have a YouTube channel and an Instagram page, which are probably my two, they're definitely my two main forms of social media.

Speaker: And like, even if like my Unbound video got, I think 75,000, maybe 80,000 views this year, and that video produced a revenue of about 600 pounds, like I'm not earning even my flights back for that video.

Speaker: That's just over the entry fee.

Speaker: Ich denke...

Speaker: YouTube ist so valuable in that sense.

Speaker: You're kind of, as an athlete, expected to make content as well.

Speaker: And if we look at other sports, there, in the last thing that I did, I had a startup, we built software for sports clubs and we worked in particular with football clubs.

Speaker: Very few content creators, but gravel that came up in this digital world already.

Speaker: And in particular, it came up...

Speaker: Grassroots, bottom-up, which meant by necessity everybody who went into the sport did it as a privateer.

Speaker: There was no such thing as a gravel team pathway or option where a team would pay your salary and even now, like most teams, don't pay salaries in gravel.

Speaker: And so all what you said is now the case, but it also means that

Speaker: Für Fans, Sports Fans, ist viel cooler, weil die Athleten so accessible sind und so relativamente.

Speaker: Unlike on the road, but much more in tune with how sports entertainment at large works these days.

Speaker: And now in all sports, in football I had these discussions with the team executives where it was like, at what point would you consider signing a worse player just because he has like this huge following and you know this following will follow the player to your team.

Speaker: which then increases your sponsorship value.

Speaker: And they started introducing new deal concepts.

Speaker: They called it one term I heard used for it like a 360 degree deal.

Speaker: So they signed the player, but the player also had to give a certain amount of, for instance, Instagram posts and so on to the club that then the club could sell to their sponsors without having to renegotiate

Speaker: The same day or the day before or the day after.

Speaker: So I think there's something that makes gravel riders way more accessible in that sense.

Speaker: And then maybe the, I don't want to say the lack of professionalism, but because it's behind in the professionalization of it, athletes are more accessible in that sense.

Speaker: Like you feel more like...

Speaker: Athletes are closer to a normie than a road racer on a road team.

Speaker: I feel like there's more of a protective bubble around a road racer on a road team and the team staff around them and things like that.

Speaker: Whereas at a gravel race, I'm in the sign-on queue with everyone else and people will come up to me and say hi and...

Speaker: Which, by the way, much to his delight, as he stated in the videos, that he really enjoyed having dinner with other bike riders and talking to normal people, which is not his reality.

Speaker: So I think many riders, especially those who converted at some point from the road, enjoy this aspect about gravel.

Speaker: Und auch die Leute, die wirklich performance-driven roadies sind, ich denke, wenn du ein Matswürz Schmidt mit dir sagen, er würde auch sagen, dass er die Gravel-Spiriten kind of enjoys.

Speaker: Und ich frage, so mehr Teams werden in Gravel, aber ich denke, die Smart Teams bereits verstehen, dass sie nicht wie ein Road Team arbeiten, besonders auf der Media-Front, aber dass sie sich um

Speaker: more leverage the athletes, the personal brands of the athletes and create something that has its own unique vibe as a team.

Speaker: An example that I like mentioning is Rose Racing Circle.

Speaker: They are mostly known in Germany.

Speaker: I don't know if you are aware of them or know them very well, but they have a cool style and content.

Speaker: Or approach to content.

Speaker: And even on the roadside, arguably the hottest, most discussed about team right now, like the Unibet Rose Rockets, which take more of the content driven approach.

Speaker: as a team and give a platform to all their riders and they expect all their riders to still be personalities.

Speaker: So maybe Gravel is not, maybe it's not like Gravel is not yet professional enough, but rather Gravel is ahead of its time, is at a very good spot and even road teams rather should become a bit more like Gravel is.

Speaker: Just from a fan relation and fan experience standpoint.

Speaker: Yeah, I think road teams would benefit from, and I think some teams are doing it, like you can see it with say like EF doing their like around the race videos that they do.

Speaker: Like they have a YouTube channel where they kind of, they do like room tours with the riders and things like that.

Speaker: And like day in the life with a rider and like it's making the riders more human and more accessible than ever before.

Speaker: And I think the fans do really love that.

Speaker: Ja, ich denke Jorgensson und Kampenart mit der Instagram-Anstatt waren sehr viel wertvolle für Wismar Lisa Bike als Team.

Speaker: Weil es gab pretty unique insights von der Tour.

Speaker: So, ja, da ist viel passiert da.

Speaker: Und ich denke, back zu der Frage, ist es da...

Speaker: a gravel bubble on the horizon.

Speaker: So the demands for riders are very different.

Speaker: A certain type of rider, as you just mentioned, still gets contracts, especially if they are also good on the content game.

Speaker: And then, of course, the highest level of performance.

Speaker: Do you think that we could reach an oversupply of pro or wannabe pro gravel racers as well?

Speaker: Ich denke, wir könnten, wenn es zu viele Räder sind, für die Positionen auf Räder sind.

Speaker: Ich denke, das ist eine andere Elemente.

Speaker: Wenn die Räder sind, dann wird mehr von Räder sein.

Speaker: Und ja, als Gravel ist die Bekommen increasingly popular, ich denke, wir müssen ein höheres Werteilung.

Speaker: Riders than there is demand for those riders for teams or sponsorships.

Speaker: I mean, I just chatted with somebody because it is going on the road.

Speaker: I don't know how many of our listeners are also following road racing, but with the, how do you call it, the fusion of Intermaché, Wonti and Lotto, there are

Speaker: Riders that will not get contracts.

Speaker: And I heard from someone I was talking to specifically that a gravel team or some players in gravel were still waiting for, for, to find out who exactly didn't get a contract.

Speaker: So they could take these under contract as new riders for next season.

Speaker: So, so that, that is in fact happening.

Speaker: And I, another angle that I would like to,

Speaker: Du hast gesagt, die YouTube-videos du machst, sie nehmen Zeit und sie nehmen Zeit, die wahrscheinlich auch du trainierst und arbeiten mehr, das ist nicht immer die richtige Antwort, aber es gibt verschiedene Strukturen und so weiter.

Speaker: Not necessarily detrimental to performance, but at least if you would talk to people from road teams, they would say only do your training and then rest all day long, ideally, and do nothing else.

Speaker: So, but you have to do it because it is part of your job description.

Speaker: Now,

Speaker: Teams fulfill or can fulfill another function, which is a bit division of labor.

Speaker: Sie machen alle die Sponsorships mit allen Sponsorships und als Athleten, Sie einfach nehmen Ihre Paycheck, fulfill Ihre Obligations in terms of Training, Racing und dann die Ocasional-Thinge für die Sponsors.

Speaker: Aber Sie müssen nicht die Negotiations machen.

Speaker: Sie haben auch die Content-Creation Infrastruktur, also Sie wahrscheinlich nicht mehr haben,

Speaker: And I think that is at least the smarter teams understand this and provide more of this type of infrastructure.

Speaker: I mean, just like I saw the teaser today for a video from Panormal about Mats and Traka and so on Rafa with EF, they did it for a long time, including with Lachlan.

Speaker: So yeah,

Speaker: The model that I find very interesting is something that you are now friends, I guess you can say, with Drew Dillman and what he did with Chase Walk with Lunchbox Racing.

Speaker: We have in the European scene...

Speaker: Lukas Baum und Georg Eger mit der Speed Company Racing Team.

Speaker: So wirklich privateers joining forces and building their own teams.

Speaker: Is that a model that you see more of, discuss with people?

Speaker: Is that something that comes up?

Speaker: you have a teammate in terms of your sharing logistics, your sharing content, your sharing all these elements, it actually does make sense because it's that share of workload.

Speaker: But I think the hard thing with something like that is you do have to have an amazing dynamic with someone.

Speaker: Lucas has that with his teammate and Drew and Chase clearly have that where they just work really well as business partners in a way.

Speaker: And like

Speaker: They pull resources together and sort the deals together and enjoy traveling together and racing together.

Speaker: And I think that that's, it definitely is going to be something maybe that we see more, but it's, it's quite a unique thing to find, I'd say.

Speaker: Yes, exactly.

Speaker: And like you would still, yeah, I actually think what we could see more of, and it's definitely something that I would think about doing if I was to get enough money to be able to do this, but like to pair up with like a videographer rather than like, because like you get someone like Pete Stetner who has his mechanic, Big Wayne, like he travels with a mechanic.

Speaker: I could see the value in traveling with a mechanic, but I would say actually for me, I have a mechanic at home.

Speaker: I can't.

Speaker: Ich denke, in den US, ja.

Speaker: All of them haben ihre Video Person auf der File.

Speaker: Und ein guter

Speaker: Anecdote that I picked up from Sarah Sturm recently.

Speaker: So she travels a lot with Roscoe, I think is the guy.

Speaker: And she explained that she doesn't pay him, but she helps the guy to get jobs from her sponsors at the races where she is.

Speaker: So the sponsors will pay him essentially to travel with her.

Speaker: Und das ist sehr hilfreich für alle, dann.

Speaker: Nein, totally.

Speaker: Und also, wenn du jemanden mit dir gehst, könnte sie sagen, das ist nicht ein exclusives Erregung.

Speaker: Du kannst für andere Menschen auch schießen.

Speaker: Und da sind einige Privatiers, die vielleicht können jemanden mitnehmen, oder während der Raison.

Speaker: Und wenn sie da schießen, warum nicht mehr Menschen schießen?

Speaker: So yeah, there's definitely potential in that.

Speaker: How much do you expect that the market, the gravel market is...

Speaker: Potentially, yes.

Speaker: To date, I don't think there have been any UCI races that have really struggled with entries.

Speaker: So it will be really interesting to see what happens in terms of that.

Speaker: And I do expect races to not sell out.

Speaker: I don't think we're going to continue seeing all of these races selling out because I just don't think there are enough people.

Speaker: And as you said, how many races does a gravel normie do a year?

Speaker: Like,

Speaker: Ich würde sagen, dass es einige Leute, die eine Bucke-List-Race machen können.

Speaker: Und wie Sie das sogar wählen?

Speaker: Es gibt so viele Races, so viele wirklich Unique Races.

Speaker: Es muss sich wirklich schwer zu wählen und wirklich prioritise.

Speaker: Vielleicht werden die Leute machen oder zwei ein Jahr.

Speaker: Du hast einen Anwalt anwenden.

Speaker: Ich falle in die weniger als fünf-Categorie für sicher, aber ich bin auch in die sub-Categorie in Gravel Normies, das ist die Gravel Dads.

Speaker: Und dann auf der Gravel Dads, die Small Kids sind.

Speaker: So that is probably the least number of races among all.

Speaker: So I extrapolated and said maybe the average five, but yeah, maybe the average is less than five.

Speaker: And then, yeah, then it becomes hard to sustain all these races and events.

Speaker: Unless they go, I mean, what we have in Europe today,

Speaker: Ich weiß nicht, ob es die same in den USA ist, aber ich denke, in vielen Ländern in Europa, die Races sind organisiert bei localen Clubs und associations, die nicht necessarily für profit organisieren.

Speaker: So that can then help to sustain this.

Speaker: But then as Verfeck and in the, as we speak, still unreleased, but soon to be released podcast said like he is looking for a higher degree of professionalization among organizers who organize races for the series than what he currently has.

Speaker: And so that probably rules out this model properly.

Speaker: Okay.

Speaker: Which I would say is more like a long cyclocross race.

Speaker: Yeah.

Speaker: And this year you had a TTT as well.

Speaker: Yeah, we had a TTT.

Speaker: We had a TT.

Speaker: Yeah, there was like a TT.

Speaker: I don't think that will happen next year.

Speaker: Okay.

Speaker: It was a fun event and it was a great idea for them to just make more of the weekend.

Speaker: But I don't think it seemed so popular.

Speaker: And I don't think British cycling will do that.

Speaker: Maybe a dirt crit would rather be it.

Speaker: National dirt crit championships.

Speaker: It'd be entertaining.

Speaker: I'd definitely go and watch.

Speaker: For sure.

Speaker: Let's probably conclude this on a more optimistic note.

Speaker: So now I don't know how far you are with your 2026 season planning, but looking forward to next year, what makes you optimistic for gravel and what are you stoked about for next year?

Speaker: Good question.

Speaker: I think I'm stoked personally for some of the events that have popped up on the calendar that I think look really cool and to do those.

Speaker: So for example, just looking at some of the new UCI races and places that I can go and race my bike that I've not been before.

Speaker: So I'm stoked to kind of get part of that.

Speaker: Yeah, I'm intrigued to see what happens next year.

Speaker: I'm like...

Speaker: The best thing about this year and it's going to continue next year is that we got to see more of the racing life.

Speaker: Und wenn es nicht live war, dann, für instance, die Gravel Burner coverage war high-quality, obwohl es nicht live war.

Speaker: Und zu sehen, mehr auf die Räsen macht es viel mehr intrigierend.

Speaker: Weil es plötzlich, als jemand who creates viel content über die Sport, mehr du kannst sehen, mehr du kannst und discussieren.

Speaker: Aber es macht es auch...

Speaker: Visually, to me, it's such a great sport and much better than road cycling.

Speaker: Watching road cycling, of course, it's cool because of the peloton and so on, but just the environments that riders are in, to me, is much more aspirational.

Speaker: I'm certainly biased and not representative, but it's cool that we get more of this bodes well for the future of the sport for me, even though we might be in a stage where it is a bit overheated and on some level

Speaker: there will be consolidation.

Speaker: I also hope that we see more prize money because we started to see that this year.

Speaker: So say for example with Gravelburn, there was a big prize pass there.

Speaker: And we see that next year with Lifetime.

Speaker: And when you put prize money in races, it brings the athletes there.

Speaker: So you can see with Lifetime, Rosa Caro, Morgan, those girls going over from Europe.

Speaker: Triathlon, even though I would hope that gravel remains its very distinct quirky identity going forward, is at least like how it works, like on a structural level, a very apt comparison just because it is also mass participation and they found out some good things.

Speaker: Say, Teams should have a maximum number of Riders, for instance, right now, that can enter races.

Speaker: And then on top of

Speaker: Revenue share needs to become something.

Speaker: Not of the events business.

Speaker: I don't think that the organizers of the races on the ground should distribute entry fees.

Speaker: But then for everything that is earned in the growing media pie,

Speaker: Das muss sich um die Räder zu beherrschten, um die Räder zu geben.

Speaker: Und da müssen sich die Models für das, das wir nicht haben auf der Straße, das ist ein Problem für Road Racing, weil es so auf die Sponsoren ist, aber sie sind so auf die Sponsoren, aber sie sind dann auch able, um die Endemik-Brand-Partners zu beherrschten.

Speaker: Aber auch nur weil der Tour de France, Realistically.

Speaker: So, ja.

Speaker: Und ich denke, das ist

Speaker: The cool thing about Gravel, especially because it's not completely under the UCI umbrella, is that we have more actors and innovation is happening there more quickly.

Speaker: And something that looks very different from what cycling has on the road could emerge.

Speaker: And I think these are decisive years we are in now.

Speaker: And I would hope that some organizers have a bit of a forward-thinking approach to this.

Speaker: Does ChatGPT think it's a bubble or not?

Speaker: And it said no.

Speaker: So if ChatGPT is anything to go by, it says that gravel cycling is going to continue to grow and that people will continue to buy gravel bikes.

Speaker: And it has for lots of reasons, lots of potential in the future.

Speaker: And we don't need to worry.

Speaker: I mean, for once, let's hope ChatGPT is right.

Speaker: And then the future is Rosie.

Speaker: I hope so.

Speaker: For the future of my career, I hope so.

Speaker: Cool.

Speaker: Hey, thanks a lot for taking the time today for jumping on.

Speaker: It was great to have you.

Speaker: Thank you so much for having me.
