Speaker: Ich mag ihn einfach sehr gerne.
Speaker: Hey Rob.
Speaker: Hey Paul, how's it going?
Speaker: Good.
Speaker: Man, you're seriously the least serious German I know.
Speaker: I'm the least.
Speaker: So how many Germans do you actually know?
Speaker: Beside from all the Schwalbe guys.
Speaker: Well, if you take away those, I mean, like.
Speaker: Then it's me.
Speaker: Yeah, well, yeah, yeah.
Speaker: I mean, technically Seb isn't part of Schwalbe anymore, so there's Seb.
Speaker: Yeah.
Speaker: And then I know one other guy.
Speaker: Ja?
Speaker: Wer?
Speaker: Sebastian.
Speaker: Er ist Sebastian.
Speaker: Er ist Film und Video.
Speaker: Er ist großartig.
Speaker: Ah, Samak.
Speaker: Ja.
Speaker: All I know ist, dass all die Germans von Schwalbe, die in der Schwalbehaus sind, nicht sehr serious, aber sie können auch sehr bequitathleten sein.
Speaker: Das ist sehr accurate.
Speaker: I have a question about animals later on.
Speaker: Alright.
Speaker: 2x or 1x?
Speaker: Mountain bike or gravel?
Speaker: Gravel.
Speaker: Gravel or road?
Speaker: Gravel.
Speaker: Wine or beer?
Speaker: Beer.
Speaker: IPA or lager?
Speaker: IPA.
Speaker: Instant coffee or barista coffee?
Speaker: I don't know.
Speaker: What is the English word for that when you have a proper coffee from like a... Like espresso or just like... I mean, you can just say instant coffee and then you can say coffee.
Speaker: So, like, coffee.
Speaker: Coffee.
Speaker: Waysuit or jersey and bibs?
Speaker: Definitely jersey and bibs.
Speaker: Sitting on or pulling?
Speaker: Pulling.
Speaker: Onfeeling or Power Meter?
Speaker: Power Meter.
Speaker: FKT Fast No Time?
Speaker: Yeah.
Speaker: Or Bikepacking Event?
Speaker: Probably FKT.
Speaker: Spirit of Gravel or All Out Racing?
Speaker: For me, probably Spirit of Gravel.
Speaker: I like that you almost spilled your coffee while I said Spirit of Gravel.
Speaker: Style or speed?
Speaker: Good going fast, but probably style.
Speaker: Conservative or taking risks?
Speaker: Probably taking risks.
Speaker: With or without plan?
Speaker: Oh, without a plan.
Speaker: Unbound or UCI Gravel Worlds?
Speaker: Unbound.
Speaker: So, is the spirit of Gravel dead?
Speaker: Yeah, I mean, like, there's a few times, I think, you saw it.
Speaker: I feel like the breaking point in my mind was the last time I did Unbound, 200, so like 2024.
Speaker: We had the discussion about the error handlebars?
Speaker: No, that was 2022.
Speaker: That was super early.
Speaker: It's true.
Speaker: It's 2022.
Speaker: 2024, I remember rolling up the start line.
Speaker: I think that was a year they bumped it even 10 or 15 minutes earlier for us to give the top guys their own separate start.
Speaker: Yeah.
Speaker: which is great from a safety standpoint, but it's just like, it's just fucked that you're starting at like 5.50 in the morning.
Speaker: Never, it's like,
Speaker: 5.30, 5.20 a.m.
Speaker: And there's people just like on the rollers.
Speaker: And I'm like, fuck, we have 200 miles ahead of us.
Speaker: 300 and what, 25 kilometers?
Speaker: And you need to roll, like, get on the friggin, like, the rollers?
Speaker: You gotta be kidding me.
Speaker: Yeah, that's true.
Speaker: Honestly, it makes sense for a lot of races, but I really feel it doesn't make any sense for Unbound.
Speaker: Yeah, I mean, it's a 10-hour bike race.
Speaker: I don't know.
Speaker: Anyway, as you said earlier, just to explain this thing, cat or dog is a dog, and then I actually have a question about animals.
Speaker: I think we had this discussion already before.
Speaker: Do you have bears where you're living?
Speaker: Where are you living in Canada?
Speaker: So I live in Victoria, British Columbia on Vancouver Island.
Speaker: And yeah, we've got black bears here.
Speaker: That's the one that's dangerous.
Speaker: Like the brown bears are actually all right.
Speaker: Or is the black bears all right?
Speaker: No, black bears are like, they're just like, I don't know.
Speaker: You don't really have a lot of animals that can kill you in generally speaking like Europe.
Speaker: But yeah, here, I mean, a black bear can definitely like kill you, but they're pretty timid.
Speaker: Like,
Which ones are die funny ones?
Speaker: Aber in Vancouver.
Speaker: where the houses go right up to the mountains, that's basically their raccoon.
Speaker: They'll come and they'll open your garbage can and eat the trash.
Speaker: Okay.
Speaker: So, I heard stories about gravel cyclists or off-road cyclists in general.
Speaker: I think in Montana, they have to take, not necessarily guns with them, but massive bear sprays with them on the bike rides.
Speaker: Do you have to do it as well?
Speaker: But I think they have grizzlies there, huh?
Speaker: Yeah, that's the difference.
Speaker: A grizzly will like...
Speaker: So like a brown bear's or sorry, black bears general demeanor is just like a forest animal and they're curious and they're not aggressive.
Speaker: A grizzly bear's general demeanor is just like permanently woken up on the wrong side of the bed.
Speaker: Like they wake up and they're just, they just seem angry.
Speaker: And I don't know why.
Speaker: Cause it's like, they're already the apex.
Speaker: They're at the top of the food chain.
Speaker: Like nothing is above them really.
Speaker: So it's like, I don't know why they're so upset.
Speaker: They're kind of the king of the jungle.
Speaker: gibt viele Grizzlies gibt.
Speaker: Ja.
Speaker: Du hast Angst, dann?
Speaker: ...to take their bear spray out, take the safety off, and effectively have a plan of attack.
Speaker: So it was like 30 or 40 seconds where this happened.
Speaker: And I was already up the road by myself, which was a terrible idea.
Speaker: Anyway, they were fine.
Speaker: But yeah, they're definitely out there.
Speaker: Unsere dangerous elements sind wie street dogs, you know?
Speaker: who can be really aggressive and like, I mean, they killed people in like certain countries, like, but like as a pack.
Speaker: So that has happened, but yeah, they're the most kind of most dangerous animal you actually can have then.
Speaker: So it's like, for me, imagining like just...
Speaker: seeing bears all the time i really can't imagine and it's like also why did you start with cycling and not ice hockey as a canadian um like i mean i played like i never played like in a league or anything i played like as a kid like every kid in canada um
Speaker: All winter lang, du play, du get frostbite, es ist awesome.
Speaker: Ich habe das Gefühl, als Kind, aber ich war ganz gut, was ich alles, was ich, was alles, was ich, was ich, was ich, was ich, was ich, was ich, was ich, was ich, was ich, was ich, was ich, was ich, was ich, was ich, was ich, was ich, was ich, was ich, was ich, was ich, was ich, was ich, was ich, was ich, was ich, was ich, was ich, was ich, was ich, was ich, was ich, was ich, was ich, was ich, was ich, was ich, was ich, was ich, was ich, was ich, was ich, was ich, was ich, was ich, was ich, was ich, was ich, was ich, was ich, was ich, was ich, was ich, was ich, was ich, was ich, was ich, was ich, was ich, was ich, was ich, was ich, was ich, was ich, was ich, was ich, was ich, was ich, was ich, was ich, was ich, was ich, was ich, was ich, was, was ich, was ich, was, was ich, was ich, was, was ich, was, was ich, was, was ich, was, was ich, was, was ich, was, was ich, was, was ich, was, was ich, was, was ich, was, was ich, was, was ich, was, was ich, was, was ich, was, was ich, was, was ich, was, was, was ich, was, was, was ich, was, was, was ich, was, was, was ich, was, was, was ich, was, was, was, was ich, was, was, was, was ich, was, was, was, was
Speaker: just where it could take me.
Speaker: And yeah, you know, you read the magazines, you see like mountain biking was kind of cool, like at the time.
Speaker: And like, so I got to travel to all these places and it seemed like a pretty sweet thing to do.
Speaker: So I just stuck with it.
Speaker: And who were actually the biggest riders back then when you started?
Speaker: Did you have like any idols?
Speaker: I mean, I think Steve Bauer was that time.
Speaker: No, Steve was a bit before that.
Speaker: Steve was like, um,
Speaker: The mountain bike boom.
Speaker: So that was a mountain biking was, I'd say even to this day, mountain biking was definitely a cross country mountain biking downhill was at its peak.
Speaker: It was cool to be like, have a cool mountain bike and stuff like this.
Speaker: So, and that was shortly after that, like when I was still in like high school was when Canada was doing really well, like rolling green, two-time world champion, Ryder Heschel, who was like a big idol at the time was a,
Speaker: Ich bin jetzt schon mal.
Speaker: Ich bin jetzt schon mal.
Speaker: So, initially...
Speaker: Du hast Tour of California, Tour of Utah, Tour of Georgia.
Speaker: At der Zeit, du hast die World Tour races für ein paar Jahre.
Speaker: In Quebec, du hast die.
Speaker: But even before that, there was a pedigree of these incredible high-caliber UCI races.
Speaker: Even I did with my Continental team.
Speaker: We flew over, I think 2012, was it?
Speaker: To do Tour of Utah and then other races.
Speaker: Yeah, so we would have raced each other back then.
Speaker: Ja, sure.
Speaker: Their pro teams were there.
Speaker: So you'd have like one or two pros.
Speaker: Like they were at a decent level in the US.
Speaker: So you'd start racing against them, beating them.
Speaker: And then I got a contract with an American team, Bissell, which was one of the biggest teams in the US.
Speaker: So I didn't race in Europe until, oh, I think it was 2020.
Speaker: Or no, sorry.
Speaker: It would have been like 2013 maybe.
Speaker: Mm-hmm.
Speaker: 2013, ich denke.
Speaker: Ich raced für die British Rally.
Speaker: Rally UK.
Speaker: Even in Europa, ja.
Speaker: Drome.
Speaker: To gehen von in Amerika, wo es basically just, like, ein Fitness Dance-Off, right?
Speaker: in Europe, you know, where you know there's coming like a tight corner and afterwards it's like a road which is just like free riders ride.
Speaker: So it's much more stress and you always could see that Americans, good Americans coming over to European teams at first struggled.
Speaker: They were always good in mountains where they could just like watts per kilogram.
Speaker: But as soon as it was a bit technical, they struggled quite heavily.
Speaker: So how was it for you?
Speaker: Oh, for sure.
Speaker: No, I was like definitely atypical in that sense.
Speaker: Like I...
Speaker: We are very, like, North Americans, fitness-wise, like, the numbers are good.
Speaker: But it's like, unless you're coming over onto, and I do really believe this, it's like, unless you're coming over onto either a good pro-conti team that has respect in the Peloton or a World Tour team, it's like, people, like, and I get it.
Speaker: Like, we do the same thing to amateurs in North America.
Speaker: Like, we wouldn't give somebody we didn't know a wheel.
Speaker: But it's, uh,
Speaker: in Europe and dedicating myself to the craft, living abroad.
Speaker: So not just going over for blocks at a time, but actually living in Girona for the full season and being committed to it.
Speaker: And Dead Boss 21.
Speaker: Exactly.
Speaker: Things got all weird with COVID, 2020, 2021.
Speaker: I was one of the lucky ones that
Speaker: There was more that I wanted to do in biking.
Speaker: Did you have any contact with Gravel back then already?
Speaker: I did a bit, yeah.
Speaker: I was talking with Felt a little bit already.
Speaker: But really, it's like I reached out to people who were kind of, I'd say, kind of like leaders in their respective realms.
Speaker: I reached out to Jeff Kabush, Ted King, a triathlete I know, Brent McMahon, because he's
Speaker: You know, you're going from a team aspect to something you've never done before as like an independent contractor where you have to like, in fact, build your own team, right?
Speaker: So I reached out to all these guys and then I was at Tour of Swiss.
Speaker: So Tour of Swiss, like, I think you've done it, right?
Speaker: Yeah.
Speaker: So Swiss is like... No, wait, I think I did Dauphiné, but no, I never did Tour of Swiss, no.
Speaker: Ja, so Tour of Swiss ist Slightly warmer.
Speaker: Slightly warmer.
Speaker: Ja.
Speaker: Und...
Speaker: Ich totale agree.
Speaker: Ich würde meine eigene Altitude Camps machen.
Speaker: Ich würde wirklich versuchen, Nutrition zu machen.
Speaker: All these little bits.
Speaker: And then after COVID, it's like the most talented guys in the world just used to get by on talent.
Speaker: But then they'd drink the beers.
Speaker: Start training.
Speaker: Yeah, like, oh, okay.
Speaker: And then they'd show up good a couple times a year.
Speaker: It's like those super talented guys then started to train professionals in any other sport where it's like... I feel like that's what COVID did.
Speaker: It professionalized cycling.
Speaker: And then everything was measured.
Speaker: Everything was dialed.
Speaker: And it never slowed back down.
Speaker: And that was like...
Speaker: I was making decent money at the time, stable money on Rally.
Speaker: I would have had a contract again, I'm pretty sure.
Speaker: So 21 was your contract year, but you would have got another year with Rally.
Speaker: Yeah.
Speaker: Okay.
Speaker: And then the jump from like
Speaker: Being in kind of a safe environment, also financially, jumping into being a privateer, how was the switch?
Speaker: Of course, suddenly you're rising on gravel, but also getting all the sponsorships together, getting the backing together financially.
Speaker: Did you struggle with that, or was it actually all right?
Speaker: Oh, no, it was far from easy.
Speaker: I think, I can't remember what I was making, but I was like,
Speaker: Und...
Speaker: You have to use that to actually do all the stuff.
Speaker: Before, it's like you're making good money, you didn't pay for anything.
Speaker: I'm like, okay, well, I have money saved from the year before.
Speaker: It was really kind of an investment thing.
Speaker: Let's just make a go of it.
Speaker: It worked out well.
Speaker: I think...
Speaker: Castelli, Schwabe, Factor, First Endurance, und dann Easton.
Speaker: Es war eigentlich strange, sitting in airplanes to the US, with just five other passengers, and you had more board crew members than actually passengers on board.
Speaker: Oh, it's the best.
Speaker: It's like, yeah, you had a whole cabin for yourself.
Speaker: Just lay down, it's great.
Speaker: to make a certain amount of money you need to have also personality because these days a lot of guys and girls coming into the sport but they're coming also with another mindset into the sport which is more road like which which is coming from the road like the mindset and the structure everything and we I think we still have the entrepreneurship in ourselves because that's what we have to have to make this work out you know because we are in the end like a
Just zu geben, ich will mich.
Speaker: Did you enjoy that?
Speaker: To negotiate things, get in contact with people, organizing everything, booking your own hotels, booking your own flights, all that shit.
Speaker: Do you actually enjoy that or is it like a pain in the ass for you?
Speaker: I mean, I think I like it more than a lot of people.
Speaker: Or do you have someone who's doing it for you?
Speaker: No, I do it on myself.
Speaker: I'm way too cheap to pay someone else to do that for me.
Speaker: But
Speaker: Over the years, like I was saying before, I did a lot of my own altitude stuff, right?
Speaker: So I was already pretty good at logistics before I went to this side of it.
Speaker: So that side of it, I actually quite enjoy.
Speaker: Just like finding travel accommodations, like this stuff.
Speaker: It ebbs and flows with how efficient I am at it, but I don't hate it.
Speaker: The sponsorship side of it is like...
Speaker: to visit for whatever it is the staffer like like we'll go for dinner we'll have some drinks and it's like it's something i look forward to we don't sit there and talk about it's like okay well i'm thinking this race you know and you know this is what i think about this tire compound like he doesn't give a shit about that he wants to just like go out and like have a nice dinner and just chat about stuff you know chat about his kid chat about my wife like these are personal relationships and it's the same with a lot of my stuff it's i quite enjoy those and then it
Speaker: Was du?
Speaker: All right, well.
Speaker: Let's find something in the middle.
Speaker: And then it's just sort of like this elephant in the room that makes it awkward.
Speaker: And that's kind of the pros and cons of having a business that's also like a friendship, right?
Speaker: It's tough, but I think... Yeah, it...

Speaker: At the drop of a hat, Trek or Specialized can have a gravel team.
Speaker: The biggest thing with the team is infrastructure and staff.
Speaker: They have that, just diversify it a little bit.
Speaker: They have idle vehicles.
Speaker: Send a vehicle to your swanier as an director to a race, and then it's like how the riders just show up and their staff's waiting for them.
Speaker: Same as road, that's not hard.
Speaker: And that's just sitting there.
Speaker: That's...
Just Tracker.
Speaker: Okay, aber du hast 3.6, ja?
Speaker: Was ist die 360?
Speaker: Ich würde sagen, die 360 war unbound.
Speaker: 2022.
Speaker: So what I mean is like the dynamics, like 200 has a totally different dynamic to like 360.
Speaker: So it's like a, it's a different kind of racing and UCI races are also different to unbound.
Speaker: It's like two different kind of riders even almost.
Speaker: Yeah, just it's shorter.
Speaker: So you can just go flat out for the, pretty much the whole time.
Speaker: Yeah.
Speaker: What, what does gravel mean to you?
Speaker: Well, it used to mean not road racing.
Speaker: I mean, to me, it still does.
Speaker: Yeah.
Speaker: From a racing standpoint, it's a way to race and use your own personal tactics in what used to be kind of like a mano a mano situation, like similar to being in like
Speaker: High-caliber breakaway, pretty much.
Speaker: If you were fit in gravel racing up until recently, you'd always make that initial selection.
Speaker: And there always would be a selection of craps in the race.
Speaker: And then very, very few people would have a teammate.
Speaker: So it became who was savvy, who was fit.
Speaker: And then all the fun things that gravel has, like bike handling skills, like
Speaker: Ich gehe so deep.
Speaker: Riding at home where I live, it's really fun to just sort of maybe call it underbiking.
Speaker: What I do for gravel, people would call it mountain biking.
Speaker: We ride single track, we do a lot of stuff that's really, really technical.
Speaker: How bikes have evolved to have 2.1, 2.2 mountain bike tires for where I live.
Speaker: That's why I run a suspension fork so much because here it's the best.
Speaker: Like, the mountain bike trails scare the shit out of me.
Speaker: But riding mountain bike trails on a gravel bike, like, you just, like, you can take a blue trail and make it fun.
Speaker: Whereas on, like, a trail bike, a blue trail is, like, boring, but a black trail is terrifying.
Speaker: So it's, like, this is, like, that happy middle ground.
Speaker: So, yeah, to me, it's, like, I just...
Speaker: Du hast 23 Badlands gewonnen.
Speaker: Es ist kind of funny, man.
Speaker: You saw firsthand how I get ready for pretty big races.
Speaker: Yeah, we're coming to that later.
Speaker: We talk about your unbound XL wind.
Speaker: It's like, I still think you made all this up, but yeah, I saw it with my own eyes, how chaotic and unorganized it all seems to be.
Speaker: But I'm not sure it is actually that unorganized, but yeah.
Speaker: Yeah, so Badlands, I think like...
Speaker: I think as a European winning Badlands, it's a really big deal and you can make some really good sponsors and brand partners from it.
Speaker: And it's like, I didn't get any, Schwabe was unreal, right?
Speaker: Because they're a part of the race, but no one cares.
Speaker: Outside of that, it's like Factor is like, oh, cool, yeah.
Speaker: Sorry, what is it?
Speaker: It's Badlands.
Speaker: It's probably like,
Speaker: but like, you know, it's like, I can't even get like Garmin to sponsor me.
Speaker: And it's like, you know, it's like, and then, so it was a personally for you.
Speaker: It was really special personally.
Speaker: That was a huge, like on like on a professional side of it, it didn't really change anything on a personal side of it.
Speaker: It was really, really special.
Speaker: Like I wanted to do well in it, but I'd never, that was the first, that was the first ultra distance race I ever did.
Speaker: Um,
Speaker: All right, cool.
Speaker: Sure.
Speaker: Like, we've been going full gas since 7 a.m.
Speaker: And he just goes in and it's like, it's a coffee, a Coke, like, I don't know, a piece of fruit and like a bocadillo and just out the door.
Speaker: And I'm like, okay.
Speaker: And you don't really think about it because you're dumb.
Speaker: Like, it's like you erase your brain, right?
Speaker: You're just like, yeah, okay, this makes sense.
Speaker: So it's like, I think I had like one more coffee or something or got like an extra can of Coke.
Speaker: But I went into the night that first night with like,
Speaker: whatever snacks I had on me.
Speaker: So like some cliff blocks, a couple of gels and I'd run out of drink mix ages ago.
Speaker: A Boca Dio in my pocket, just like a, like a meat sandwich and like a banana or something.
Speaker: And then I just started going and you don't realize like you're about to go through the night.
Speaker: It's, it's, and it's only like 6 30 PM.
Speaker: You're going over a mountain.
Speaker: like what you just mentioned, sitting down, eating properly, that's what I will do, you know, because I can't just like survive on Snickers for like, or on Haribo, like through the night and like running through the night and for like 10 hours and not stopping.
Speaker: And it's just like, I'm just not made for that.
Speaker: I think you're certainly one of the persons I know, like Zab, who are just made for this kind of shit, you know?
Speaker: But I'm like, oh yeah, I'll just ride through the night twice and we'll be fine.
Speaker: And we'll just figure it out.
Speaker: Let's go.
Speaker: And I won't sleep.
Speaker: And how hard could that be?
Speaker: So I slept like an hour and a half over the course of three days.
Speaker: And I was injured for about four weeks.
Speaker: Like my knees, everything broke that time.
Speaker: Like I couldn't feel my fingertips.
Speaker: So a year later, I'd learned some stuff.
Speaker: And then I did Badlands in one.
Speaker: I'm like, oh, that's pretty cool.
Speaker: And like, you know, I finished and my wife was there waiting for me.
Speaker: which was awesome.
Speaker: Obviously, the elation of winning the event was like, I'll never forget that.
Speaker: It was just... It's one of those things, right?
Speaker: Having won it, I don't think I'll ever go back because there's no way I can improve on that memory.
Speaker: That's perfect.
Speaker: But I'll probably go back to Unbound.
Speaker: The exception of Unbound, I don't like to go back to races where it's like,
Speaker: Racing it last year.
Speaker: Okay, this year you mean in 25.
Speaker: But I guess you also enjoyed it because you were racing against cool guys.
Speaker: Like guys who are like you, like-minded.
Speaker: And who come also from a professional road background.
Speaker: With Lachna Morton, Lawrence Tendam.
Speaker: Who was there?
Speaker: Ted?
Speaker: Yeah, Ted was there.
Speaker: And then Robin was there for a while.
Speaker: Yeah, so...
Speaker: I saw your preparation for the race first hand in the Schwanlhaus and it was kind of funny.
Speaker: That's pretty normal.
Speaker: I mean, the preparation training wise beforehand was actually really, really good.
Speaker: The exception of a week before the event, I had this.
Speaker: It was just like the final push, right?
Speaker: The same as you would always do for any big block, right?
Speaker: I had a really nice block of training I did
Speaker: Um, like I don't crash often and I rarely crash when I'm by myself and don't have like, usually I have like a little, the Garmin inReach.
Speaker: Um, I didn't have that with me and I had a pretty bad crash.
Speaker: Like, or it rattled me enough.
Speaker: Like I smoked my knee off some pretty sharp rocks, like smashed myself into the ground, like hit a tree with my head.
Speaker: And I was in the middle of nowhere.
Speaker: No one really knew where I was.
Speaker: And that was like,
Speaker: Oh shit, this is kind of stupid.
Speaker: I was about to ride a big section of a trail I had never done before that doesn't really exist on a map.
Speaker: So the prep before, I guess what I'm getting at, it was going really well, but I did have this crash that really shook me.
Speaker: Got home, my knee was super sore, and I'm like, oh, this isn't good.
Speaker: Knee sore, I popped a rib out, which was really bad because then I couldn't really breathe well.
Speaker: And it got super inflamed.
Speaker: So it actually locked, it got locked in, so breathing was almost limited.
Speaker: And then the day before unbound, that swelling finally dropped and the rib released, which is kind of like getting stabbed, where it pops fully out.
Speaker: And just in the cartilage a little bit, so it's excruciatingly painful.
Speaker: So then basically moving the bike at all was awful.
Speaker: So the preparation was pretty good, except for that.
Speaker: And then I had another nap and then got up and then I was like... And then you had to tie some stuff to your bike and it didn't work and you were like sorting out things and then went up to your room and your room looked just like not just one but two bombs exploded.
Speaker: Yeah, basically it's like... So nutrition plan, we'll start there.
Speaker: I was like, okay, each bottle should have at least 100 grams of carbs.
Speaker: So I had two bottles.
Speaker: But then...
Speaker: The frame bag I was using, and I knew this beforehand, doesn't allow you to fit two one liter bottles in it.
Speaker: So I was jamming it up, so it was protruding like crazy.
Speaker: This sack.
Speaker: So my knees were rubbing on it.
Speaker: I'm like, ah shit, okay, that's a problem.
Speaker: Alright, well we'll just figure that out.
Speaker: So I kind of wrapped that up.
Speaker: Nutrition, and then I was like, okay, I'll do this hydration pack.
Speaker: And then I'm like, well,
Speaker: Hydration packs suck because they always get hot.
Speaker: And Castellia just sent us this sweet new Aero suit that I'd never worn in my life.
Speaker: And I'm like, this thing looks pretty awesome.
Speaker: Like it's got pockets and everything.
Speaker: It's like pretty zippy.
Speaker: And you asked me if you should use it.
Speaker: I think we even had to put it on together or something like this.
Speaker: I needed help putting the thing.
Speaker: Yeah, the bladder.
Speaker: And then it's like, well, then the hose is hanging down here.
Speaker: And I'm like, oh, maybe I should cut it.
Speaker: So then I think...
Speaker: Just looking at it, be like, well, if each one of these is 100 grams, that's perfect.
Speaker: So it's like two gels, three gels, two gels, three gels, plus like, think of mix to like round it all out.
Speaker: So that was the viewing plan.
Speaker: Yeah, the skin suit I never wore before.
Speaker: The bag didn't really fit in the bike.
Speaker: Yeah, I'd never practiced changing the bladder on my own, because obviously I was going to have to do that at least once in the race.
Speaker: And then the piece de resistance that no one really knows about was...
Speaker: I had a brand new wax chain.
Speaker: So I used Silica.
Speaker: So I had the Endurance chip.
Speaker: So it was supposed to help carry the chain into that 300k range.
Speaker: But still, it was a specifically wax chain, brand new for the event.
Speaker: And there was one of the rollers on the chain links was the wrong diameter.
Speaker: It was slightly too big.
Speaker: So when I put the
Speaker: Quicklink, it was binding.
Speaker: And I found this out as I was riding to the start with about an hour and 15 minutes to the start.
Speaker: So, well, I panicked.
Speaker: Then I went to Shimano and they're like, okay, well, this isn't working.
Speaker: So then I continued, the panic continued.
Speaker: So then I'm like, ah, I ran over to Silica and I'm like, I need a chain right now.
Speaker: So about 40 minutes before the start at this point.
Speaker: So we go back over to Shimano with the brand new chain.
Speaker: They cut it to length, put it on, run it through, it's all good.
Speaker: Went to the start and like, and you're just like sitting there by yourself, like looking at this, you have all this shit in the bike, trying to hope that it all kind of works.
Speaker: Like, and yeah, then we just started and it was, it was nice.
Speaker: Just like the rollout wasn't like panic chaos.
Speaker: And, but yeah, that was, that was the morning of,
Speaker: Robin stopped at that gas station.
Speaker: I can't remember what town.
Speaker: So they stopped, we kept going and we were really rolling well together.
Speaker: It's sweet riding with guys like that who know how to ride in the dark.
Speaker: So we... My last memory of Lachlan until I saw him like 10 hours later or something was just like, alright man, well, good luck, see you later.
Speaker: And you just see this like
Speaker: puts his other earbud in and just takes off into the night.
Speaker: And I'm like, all right, cool.
Speaker: And then so Lawrence and I get water and I think we were going good together too.
Speaker: And Lawrence and I race each other tons.
Speaker: We've had a pretty similar gravel career-ish kind of, right?
Speaker: And very similar skill sets.
Speaker: And then he punctured in Little Egypt.
Speaker: And I'm like, I don't know, like,
Speaker: Was?
Speaker: Really?
Speaker: Ich liebe Riding in the Darkness.
Speaker: Ich ran über ein Badger.
Speaker: Really?
Speaker: Sorry, kept on going.
Speaker: He was going to be so angry by the time Lawrence came through.
Speaker: But yeah, so then found out I was close to Auckland and at that point it was like, shit, sweet.
Speaker: I mean, not that I could go that much faster, but it's motivating for sure.
Speaker: That's the point where you open your beer.
Speaker: Ja.
Speaker: Ich habe es über den Kassner.
Speaker: Ja.
Speaker: I guess I have a job next year, so that's good.
Speaker: But no, it's like, I don't think it really was, it didn't change anything.
Speaker: Maybe I'm just not good at marketing myself.
Speaker: Yeah, I don't know, to be honest.
Speaker: I think I can say with myself, okay, if I went unbound to a hundred, of course, that will change things, but
Speaker: If I win another time, Traker, let's say, or win another German championship title, I think that won't change really much anymore.
Speaker: We are like on a certain level status.
Speaker: And of course, like this one big thing can change everything or a bit.
Speaker: But I think we just settled where we are, which is also fine.
Speaker: I agree.
Speaker: It's like there is sort of that one element of like
Speaker: Und ich habe niemals been one.
Speaker: um just going back to like the business side of it i've never been one or a huge fan of bonus structure stuff and i know some people are like that was i have lots of teammates who are that was just the only way they do a contract but personally i always preferred it um to just have a salary it's like if you think i'm good and i'm worth it just pay me what you think i'm worth it like and and we'll come to an agreement it's like i'd rather have let's say like round numbers it's like
Speaker: all my sponsors when I was road racing, especially like they knew I was going to show up and give everything I had regardless of that was like a support role or like a protected rider.
Speaker: But, um, and I, I just sort of brought a lot of that over to gravel, like just trust that I'm always going to do the best I can for the brand.
Speaker: And like, whether that's in performance wise or whether that's in storytelling, I'm like the ultra side where we do like a video.
Speaker: Um, and for the most part,
Speaker: Ich also prefer to have a good, solid base salary.
Speaker: Ja.
Speaker: No, that's like, I just like, like I say, like from when I was a kid to like now, I just love riding my bike.
Speaker: Like, it's like the, so it's like going out and hustling and like getting the work in when it's like miserable outside like it is today.
Speaker: I'm taking the day off.
Speaker: But, uh,
Speaker: Generally speaking, that's never been hard to do.
Speaker: I think also, too, I've worked other jobs.
Speaker: I was, like I say, at the start of the conversation, I wasn't a child protege, right?
Speaker: I was really shitty, really bad.
Speaker: And so I worked until I was 25 before I ever had a paycheck racing a bike.
Speaker: I was racing, but it's like...
Speaker: Nowhere near as happy.
Speaker: You get one chance to live, you might as well be happy and make some money, then unhappy and make more.
Speaker: Yeah, it's true.
Speaker: It's just funny, I think in a few things we are quite similar.
Speaker: I mean, you're two years older than me, but we are both old now.
Speaker: Not as young.
Speaker: We aren't old.
Speaker: In a cycling performance way of thinking, we're kind of
Speaker: Let's say we're not mid-30s.
Speaker: You know?
Speaker: And... Yeah, but I'm also like... I mean, I know I'm turning 40 next year, but I really don't feel like turning 40 next year.
Speaker: I really don't feel like... I mean, I'm now in Mallorca in the training camp.
Speaker: Every day I'm back on my bike, I feel like... Yeah, I don't know.
Speaker: It just doesn't feel like I'm the age I am, you know?
Speaker: And as you said, like, yeah.
Speaker: To stop... What is your common age?
Speaker: Yeah.
Speaker: So my Whoop age is actually 24 and getting younger.
Speaker: Wow.
Speaker: I thought I was doing good.
Speaker: But I have really good skin.
Speaker: Someone told me I have really good young skin as well.
Speaker: That's because they can see more of it up here.
Speaker: Yeah, that's right.
Speaker: But no, I'm feeling still quite fresh most of the time.
Speaker: No, I agree.
Speaker: It's...
Speaker: Diese
Speaker: they're not that different than like when I was the best of my best when I was road racing.
Speaker: Cause I think I've just, I've gotten smarter at training.
Speaker: Um, I think your body has a certain memory to it.
Speaker: Like the hardest part for me now is, and I still haven't nailed it at all.
Speaker: It's, um, it's figuring out how to balance like my real life.
Speaker: Like, um, so like when a,
Speaker: I don't have these routines I wish I could have, but if I have these routines, then I don't have a private life.
Speaker: Or I can't do other stuff I'm doing with different podcasts, other businesses I'm involved with.
Speaker: So either you have to cut there to make this one thing 100% perfect, but then you compromise so much what has more impact on your future, which is...
Speaker: Ich completely agree.
Speaker: das hat es größer Wert für mich und ich denke es ist so hard every time you have to tell yourself again was more important at least I have to do it's like it's for me it's got it's gotten a lot easier because I just hope I mean who knows how many of my sponsors actually listen to this but it's like in so many instances when I'm racing like
Speaker: And now I just like it, I don't care.
Speaker: Like, it's not like that's, and I get that.
Speaker: And that's maybe a defense mechanism.
Speaker: So it's like, when you don't have a good result, it's like, you're not so much attached to it, but like, I'm more relaxed on it.
Speaker: So it's like, because of that, I think it makes it just a little bit easier when I'm like, you know, like this weekend, we don't like, I did like, you know,
Speaker: They know me as the entity that created the last ride.
Speaker: They don't know half the stuff I've done as a racer.
Speaker: Unbound changed that because it's a big one in North America.
Speaker: But they just know me as the guy who does the last ride.
Speaker: I'm like, last ride guy.
Speaker: And that's awesome because now that's become fully separate from the bike racer identity.
Speaker: But yeah, it took... And it still takes... It's just the acceptance and really actually having that life balance because men...
Speaker: Ja.
Speaker: Das könnte ein nice end to the podcast, aber ich habe noch eine Frage.
Speaker: Okay.
Speaker: Ich bin excited, eigentlich.
Speaker: Ich habe ein
Speaker: So, like, for the most part, I'm on my final year contract with all of my main sponsors.
Speaker: I certainly hope I get to continue doing it, but you never know.
Speaker: So, if, and this is just me, it's like, if by chance this is my last year of doing it,
Speaker: To back to Girona in January, which I think would be super cool.
Speaker: Then February is Atlas Mountain Race, which looks just crazy.
Speaker: Das ist fucking hart.
Speaker: Ja.
Speaker: Ich habe es once.
Speaker: Du hast?
Speaker: Okay.

Speaker: from very different countries and it's like obviously I appreciate that you both speak English because if you didn't it would make this conversation harder difficult but it's yeah it's like it looks like a really cool place I love Italy I love that part of I've never spent time specifically there but on both sides it's just a beautiful place and I wanted to go last year so it's like it's a fucking hard racer like steep climbs and so every fucking race is hard now but so anyway I'll go there
Speaker: Ich habe dann 360 twice.
Speaker: Aber... Are you flying back und forth all the time?
Speaker: Ja.

Speaker: There's an FKT in the UK I'd like to try.
Speaker: What else?
Speaker: I don't know if I'll do any mountain bike racing this year.
Speaker: I've had the opportunity to do some pretty amazing ones like BC Bike Race, Single Track 6, Cape Epic, Rank Epic.
Speaker: But we'll see.
Speaker: And then there's a couple other cool ones.
Speaker: There's like
Speaker: bohemian you mean oh bohemian yeah yeah i know that one that's nice that's actually not so far away from from berlin so i'm not i'm not between like two cities in germany but um one of them is berlin is actually not that far away from there nice so the other one is uh speaking of berlin uh is there's a race or race these ultra things it's berlin to somewhere in italy uh
Speaker: Why am I spacing on it?
Speaker: Torino?
Speaker: No, it's... What's the fashion capital?
Speaker: Milan.
Speaker: Milan, yeah.
Speaker: And then what's... Munich.
Speaker: It's Munich to Milan.
Speaker: That's what it is.
Speaker: Sorry, not Berlin.
Speaker: But yeah, there's an event that's from Munich to Milan that also looks super cool.
Speaker: And that's kind of...
Speaker: Obviously, I am good at these long-distance things, but it's just such a friggin... It's an efficient, cool way for me to see a lot of really incredible places.
Speaker: Are you going to do the Gravel World Championships in Australia?
Speaker: No.
Speaker: I had an opportunity to do Gravel Worlds in 2023, the same year as Badlands, and...
Speaker: Ja.
Speaker: Ja.
Speaker: Das ist gut.
Speaker: Ich bin stoked.
Speaker: Aber wenn ich, für whatever reason, ich nicht, dann wäre ich, dass ich, was ich, muss ich, was ich, muss ich, was ich, was ich, muss ich, was ich, was ich, was ich, was ich, was ich, was ich, was ich, was ich, was ich, was ich, was ich, was ich, was ich, was ich, was ich, was ich, was ich, was ich, was ich, was ich, was ich, was ich, was ich, was ich, was ich, was ich, was ich, was ich, was ich, was ich, was ich, was ich, was ich, was ich, was ich, was ich, was ich, was ich, was ich, was, was ich, was ich, was, was ich, was, was ich, was, was ich, was, was ich, was, was ich, was, was ich, was, was ich, was, was ich, was, was ich, was, was, was ich, was, was, was ich, was, was, was, was ich, was, was, was,
Speaker: Das ist ein ganzes Ende.
Speaker: Rob, danke für Ihr Zeit.

Speaker: Und see you in Italy.
Speaker: Ja, sweet.
