Chris Penick: Do we hit?
Chris Minnick: so yeah i've got a couple of topics uh Welcome everyone. ah We are going to be doing some free -form podcasting today. I...
Chris Minnick: Chris Penick, aka DJ Crispy, has no idea what's going to be hitting him. today within the next.
Chris Penick: Yeah.
Chris Minnick: three minutes and be hitting in with them.
Chris Penick: Oh man.
Chris Minnick: Hitting him with some serious... topics here that we need to discuss.
Chris Penick: hard -hitting topics Okay.
Chris Minnick: ah But. Introductions, welcome to Moving Towards Better. If you don't already follow and like us, please do.
Chris Penick: Following like...
Chris Minnick: I...
Chris Penick: Wherever the arrow is.
Chris Minnick: I mean, just in advance, like maybe you've watched another episode or you're visiting this one because you saw a short or something.
Chris Penick: Should point. Yeah.
Chris Minnick: uh you know your subscriptions are very appreciated and will help us to achieve the goal of getting enough subscribers so that youtube will send us a couple of pennies.
Chris Penick: Send us a few pennies so we can quit our day jobs.
Chris Minnick: uh
Chris Minnick: Yes, yes
Chris Penick: Yes, because you know where we already make pennies.
Chris Minnick: which Which is the topic of our...
Chris Penick: Yeah.
Chris Minnick: Anyway.
Chris Penick: Oh, oh wait, I almost...
Chris Minnick: I'm Chris Minnick.
Chris Penick: Go ahead, go ahead.
Chris Minnick: Also known as... See money.
Chris Penick: And I'm Chris Pennick. And we've established in other episodes, no relation, um brother from another mother. ah sometimes known as DJ Crispy. So however you choose to tell us apart.
Chris Penick: you know It could be the funny one. It could be the intelligent one. I don't know. I mean either of us ah The drunk one
Chris Minnick: The drunk one.
Chris Penick: That's my favorite.
Chris Minnick: Can't describe us as the fat one and the fat one, though.
Chris Penick: that's it
Chris Penick: That ain't gonna work either.
Chris Minnick: All right.
Chris Penick: No. Wait, wait a second.
Chris Minnick: So...
Chris Penick: But I identify as very skinny.
Chris Minnick: Okay. Very good. Yep.
Chris Penick: Okay.
Chris Minnick: ah ah So...
Chris Penick: Oh.
Chris Minnick: The first thing I want to mention.
Chris Penick: Yeah.
Chris Minnick: Is I got one of these things have you seen this? The XTE Inc.
Chris Penick: Oh, yeah. i I've got one sitting in my cart.
Chris Minnick: It's...
Chris Penick: I keep trying to... To convince my wife it's a necessary expense, but it's only...
Chris Minnick: Yeah, it's... it's
Chris Penick: what 70 bucks
Chris Minnick: 69 bucks yeah so i I went and bought one
Chris Penick: Yeah.
Chris Minnick: I don't know, I read like a... it was like there was a article in the atlantic and i was like oh you know, maybe I kind of need to get that.
Chris Penick: Mm hmm.
Chris Penick: Yeah.
Chris Minnick: But we are now sponsored by XTE Inc. They just don't know it yet.
Chris Penick: We're... They don't know it yet. Just like Duolingo.
Chris Minnick: ah You know, I want to just.
Chris Penick: Yeah.
Chris Minnick: fits in your pocket like that. uh supposedly it snaps onto the back of your phone like magnetically and they But that didn't work so well.
Chris Penick: Have you tried that?
Chris Minnick: So they gave you this little magnet circle. And even with that, it kind of doesn't.
Chris Penick: That's... Huh. Oh, so it doesn't hold on steady.
Chris Minnick: So it's not. Yeah, apparently the the version four. does but it's like bigger Which...
Chris Penick: I don't know that.
Chris Minnick: You're not going to get money.
Chris Penick: Yeah, I don't know why that that's a big deal. Anyway, it's like I guess to kind of keep it together But most people have a case on the back of the phone anyway, so
Chris Minnick: Yeah.
Chris Penick: you know.
Chris Minnick: So, okay, so i can I can imagine, like, if you want to... Take selfies? while you're reading.
Chris Penick: while you're reading.
Chris Minnick: Like... Ooh, I'm reading on my XTE Inc.
Chris Penick: To prove that you're reading.
Chris Minnick: Check me out.
Chris Penick: NXT Inc. I love it.
Chris Minnick: But this is, I mean, you know, this is. Um, Good, like maybe potentially learning tool if it like makes you read more.
Chris Penick: i think I think it's an awesome tool because I just had a trip. And I started reading Lonesome Dove. That is one heck of a book. Because...
Chris Minnick: Yeah.
Chris Penick: Not just good writing, but... It's huge!
Chris Minnick: Mm -hmm
Chris Penick: It's this thick You know, I can feel it when I put it in my bag that it's actually holding my bag down a little bit. So I was like.
Chris Minnick: Yeah.
Chris Penick: Hmm. Do I want to buy another? Digital copy. Or do I would leave my paperback book here and get something else and I chose that one? If I had had a digital copy, you see, I could have loaded it up.
Chris Minnick: Yeah.
Chris Penick: Or I could have, you know. I don't know. See, but that kind of Worries me though. Because I like paper.
Chris Minnick: huh
Chris Penick: Can you tell? See? I like paper.
Chris Minnick: For sure, for sure. We're both, you know, fans of paper. And I think that... is a nice segue into...
Chris Penick: Uh oh.
Chris Minnick: our first topic for today, or only topic for today.
Chris Penick: We need top special topic music
Chris Minnick: For real, actually.
Chris Penick: First topic for today!
Chris Minnick: Yeah.
Chris Penick: There we go.
Chris Minnick: our first topic today.
Chris Penick: Uh -huh
Chris Minnick: Is.
Chris Minnick: All right, in the last few years, and I am going to talk about AI here because this is like, you know, the topic du jour, but I'm going to approach it from a little bit different angle here.
Chris Penick: Uh oh.
Chris Penick: Yep.
Chris Penick: Mm hmm.
Chris Minnick: um And, you know... loops around to some other angles that maybe we'll get to but I. Panic told me I should drink more.
Chris Minnick: Um, Bye.
Chris Penick: Wait a second.
Chris Minnick: Uh...
Chris Penick: Wait a second.
Chris Minnick: And.
Chris Penick: i just like it This is not advice like doctor's advice. This is just... so You're a very interesting person when you have ah just a sip or two.
Chris Minnick: Right.
Chris Penick: so you know
Chris Minnick: I'm an interesting person regardless.
Chris Penick: I agree.
Chris Minnick: ah Alright.
Chris Penick: You're...
Chris Minnick: But.
Chris Penick: a different kind of interesting Yeah.
Chris Minnick: The question. And I'm going to write this on the screen here. Is there, Mr. Pinnock, and this is our topic for for debate and discussion today, is there room for learning?
Chris Penick: and Okay.
Chris Minnick: When AI is setting the pace. And what? brings this to me to this question.
Chris Penick: Hmm. Mm hmm.
Chris Minnick: is that. Every single... project that I get for work today requires me to learn. an entirely new topic.
Chris Minnick: ah to And then to compile. uh book. or an article.
Chris Penick: Yep.
Chris Minnick: or a presentation. Or...
Chris Penick: Mmm.
Chris Minnick: Um... A webinar on this topic by tomorrow morning.
Chris Penick: Yep. Hehehehehehe.
Chris Minnick: And so the only... fucking way that you can do this.
Chris Penick: Yeah.
Chris Minnick: is by using AI and you don't have the... Luxury. of learning and even more so
Chris Penick: i I wouldn't even call that learning though.
Chris Minnick: I... It's not even expected that you will. learn the topic anymore.
Chris Penick: Yeah.
Chris Minnick: It's just expected that you know how to use AI to get the right results so that. this thing comes out the other end. ah like some kind of...
Chris Minnick: A .I.
Chris Penick: Mm.
Chris Minnick: you know Poop. processing machine. Sorry, there's this big spider walking on my wall here
Chris Penick: Okay. No
Chris Minnick: And I want to grab something and smash it, but...
Chris Penick: That's actually a nanobot, and the AI. certainly i
Chris Minnick: It probably is.
Chris Penick: Companies, are they're listening.
Chris Minnick: It's probably those.
Chris Penick: They're listening.
Chris Minnick: Anthropic things that are claiming. the wall listening in that.
Chris Penick: Hey, now, hey, now, wait, don't mention any particular AI company because otherwise we'll lose our sponsorship.
Chris Minnick: It was. It was like.
Chris Minnick: We're sponsored now by Anthropic.
Chris Penick: Yeah. and We are sponsored by Anthropic.
Chris Minnick: Ending the world within a decade just for you.
Chris Penick: They just don't know it yet. Yeah.
Chris Minnick: Yes.
Chris Penick: Yeah. Okay.
Chris Minnick: It's a big spider.
Chris Penick: Oh, wow. Wow.
Chris Minnick: Alright.
Chris Penick: That was a big, okay. um Lots of things in there. I'm gonna... see if i can peel them back one by one here and sort of get to I think... I... i I think...
Chris Penick: There is... room for learning still in this world? I don't think that that particular example, because I've had to do the same thing. I just did a program.
Chris Penick: where I had, oh, about 50ish students. And they were with me for a couple weeks online, and then we met in person for a week, and they had to build a... an agentic workflow.
Chris Penick: example as their capstone. And. The things that they created were useful. But... It was funny. How many times I would go help a team because they were broken into teams to do this where they didn't know how to do something.
Chris Penick: And I didn't really know. exactly what the problem was with this sometimes it was maybe the structure of how they had laid out their code or something like that
Chris Minnick: Mm hmm.
Chris Penick: And I'm just sitting there guiding them through. Well, let's ask the ape. Coding agent, let's ask the AI.
Chris Minnick: Yeah. Yeah.
Chris Penick: And sure enough, the AI said, oh, well, here's your problem. And. Once we fix that, then it works. and it so you know, it makes it useful.
Chris Minnick: I know, huh?
Chris Penick: product i mean
Chris Minnick: Yeah.
Chris Penick: i think So I think AI... This is where you and I... well differ probably. I think AI has a use. For learning. me.
Chris Penick: Um, that necessary workflow. Like, I didn't feel... I still don't feel like I'm an expert in the very thing that we were. Teaching.
Chris Minnick: Yeah.
Chris Penick: Even though... I... worked through it and read through it and tried like online tutorials of the Code. But... I also had the... an AI agent help me, hey, what do would what would I need to know?
Chris Penick: to do this. And I asked it, you know, what's the 20 % that gets me the 80%.
Chris Minnick: Right.
Chris Penick: results and had it guide me through like perfect situations like that
Chris Minnick: Right. Right.
Chris Penick: but i didn't feel like an expert. Even though.
Chris Minnick: And that's the whole point is now you don't need to.
Chris Penick: That's right, okay
Chris Minnick: be an expert anymore and the whole I...
Chris Penick: ah Yeah.
Chris Minnick: you know necessity to have expertise. Is like. Out the window. And now like. kid who just graduated from middle school.
Chris Minnick: can like come up with the same software that I can.
Chris Penick: Okay. Alright, so Yeah. and i for you and me i think that's for you and me i think that's like as a developer
Chris Minnick: ah
Chris Penick: I can see that that's that's a downside. But then I look at. We have a model. We've seen this before. in not in reality, but in fiction.
Chris Minnick: No.
Chris Penick: All right. yeah On in Star Trek Next generation. right They have a holodeck. How do you program the holodeck? You give it.
Chris Penick: verse You give it.
Chris Minnick: Prompts. Yeah.
Chris Penick: prompts, prose.
Chris Minnick: Yep.
Chris Penick: And. You don't have to be an expert in holodeck engineering. You just have to say I want a program that does this and a simulation of this and I want I want to go play
Chris Minnick: That's a good point.
Chris Penick: I want to play poker with, ah you know... Well... bill Buffalo Bill or whatever. I don't know. some I want to go play poker in the 1800s with some cowboys.
Chris Minnick: that And that's a really good point.
Chris Penick: And you can.
Chris Minnick: and But why does, I mean... I mean, Geordi clearly has more knowledge of...
Chris Penick: Exactly. there's So it there's still somebody who, okay, well, one what happens when you don't get those results the results you want?
Chris Minnick: yeah
Chris Penick: There's somebody who has deeper knowledge, Geordi. who can go in and say ah well there's your problem here's why the holodeck screwed up and tried to kill you yeah Because that happens in like every holodeck -related episode, right?
Chris Minnick: Yeah. Yeah.
Chris Penick: or here's why the holodeck created a sentient being you know moriarty came to life
Chris Minnick: Right?
Chris Penick: whatever Sorry, spoilers if you haven't watched Star Trek The Next Generation.
Chris Minnick: Heh heh heh heh heh
Chris Penick: I mean... Right, so... Bye. i Where you and I differ, we see the same thing, and I think i have a hopeful. and even Okay, so one thing that got chris in this mood just so listeners know is there was a guy who has left Anthropic.
Chris Penick: Who? I guess should know. I don't know. i haven't I haven't seen the full article. I don't know exactly where he worked. He could have been a receptionist at Anthropic. I don't know. Did it say where he worked?
Chris Minnick: He was in... a Pre -training.
Chris Penick: It was in pre -training. Okay. See, so still not the other end of it, the testing.
Chris Minnick: Not him, but He was training the models.
Chris Penick: He was helping to train the model. Okay, so as he was helping to train the model So one of his comments, now that he's left. So that's kind of burning your bridges, I guess, as he says that it's going to kill us in 10 years.
Chris Penick: that's going to kill all of humanity.
Chris Minnick: Yeah.
Chris Penick: Not necessarily just from Anthropic, still Anthropic. If you'd like to sponsor us, we're open. um But... you know any of these models
Chris Minnick: Yeah.
Chris Penick: And so... Okay, there's a couple things. One that's easy to say. to depending on where he's going. Hey you know Maybe he's going to some like AI company that... you know Because now we use AI to grade and test other AI. Maybe that's what he's going to, as some AI security company or something. I don't know.
Chris Minnick: But if you...
Chris Penick: Bye. But regardless.
Chris Minnick: Sorry.
Chris Penick: Him saying that, and I'm with you, with with him saying that, right, I can understand.
Chris Minnick: go on please
Chris Penick: That's a little scary. Okay? but if Even if... Let's take his comment out for a second because I can't.
Chris Penick: i need to decide the validity of what he's saying i mean it's just That's just like the dude says that's just your opinion man
Chris Minnick: Well, I read the article and there there were...
Chris Penick: Okay.
Chris Minnick: you know quotes from people at anthropic who said yes what he is saying is true that a lot of the uh scientists at ai are very concerned that this could end all life and it seems like the more senior someone is at anthropic
Chris Penick: mm -hmm
Chris Minnick: the more they feel that this real danger.
Chris Penick: So, okay but that makes sense.
Chris Minnick: And.
Chris Penick: I mean... You didn't want to compare it to the atomic bomb, but I think think we should. you know I think i think you know another...
Chris Minnick: huh
Chris Penick: Potential life threatening. technology. Right. And that isn't I i mean, come on.
Chris Minnick: But the...
Chris Penick: Oppenheimer would I mean, we had a whole movie about this, about where he's like, you what the hell have we created?
Chris Minnick: Right. But the danger there...
Chris Penick: You know
Chris Minnick: is that people will say, well, look at that. They said the nuclear bomb would kill us all, but it didn't. So what have we got? They said climate change would kill us all, but it hasn't.
Chris Penick: Not yet.
Chris Minnick: I...
Chris Penick: Right.
Chris Minnick: No. But.
Chris Penick: Right. Okay. So I see where.
Chris Minnick: The thing is, not everyone can have, I mean...
Chris Penick: Yeah.
Chris Minnick: Two years from now, you will have like a... you know GPT -5 equivalent on your smartphone.
Chris Penick: Yep.
Chris Minnick: And... You know, and and there'll be, you know, it'll cost you like maybe $10 to make your own. foundation model.
Chris Penick: Yeah.
Chris Minnick: Alright.
Chris Penick: Yep.
Chris Minnick: And so... It's not like I mean still it's There are some things that make building a nuclear weapon. Um... more difficult.
Chris Penick: Yeah.
Chris Minnick: And it can't be just.
Chris Penick: They tend to frown when I order uranium.
Chris Minnick: Done.
Chris Penick: online. so Uranium.
Chris Minnick: Yeah.
Chris Penick: Polonium. I have not had. So, ah you know, but thorium, a thorium reactor, you might be able to get hold of thorium. so So then you could make you know a smaller nuclear reactor.
Chris Minnick: yeah
Chris Penick: Good for an EMP pulse.
Chris Minnick: Isn't that in like your eye? um smoke detectors is that
Chris Penick: there's oh yeah there's there are radioactive components heck and you know
Chris Minnick: Yeah.
Chris Penick: all around you. So you can even go...
Chris Minnick: just buy a lot of smoke detectors
Chris Penick: Buy a lot of smoke detectors. who Yeah, we're we're not just talking.
Chris Minnick: you could at least get really really annoying you would be oh yeah
Chris Penick: Yeah. Yeah, I mean, we're we're not talking just a few hundred, though.
Chris Minnick: Mm hmm.
Chris Penick: you pro And, you know.
Chris Minnick: Yeah.
Chris Penick: um But, you know, they used to sell kids. You could as a kid get a chemistry. the set that had live or that had radioactive you know uranium that you could play with at home.
Chris Minnick: Right. Yeah.
Chris Penick: it's like where is that i want one of those i mean i've seen them on like you know ebay now and i keep debating you know i want to get one you can get uranium glass okay and all right we're we're digressing here but
Chris Minnick: Yeah.
Chris Penick: But...
Chris Minnick: Yeah, but that's not highly enriched you guys then you got to get like the
Chris Penick: There's...
Chris Minnick: the the centrifuges and
Chris Penick: Yeah.
Chris Minnick: whatnot.
Chris Penick: Yeah. yeah you've got to go through yeah and in the it's it's it's it's you know the the the the the effectiveness of it is like millimeters you know you gotta shine you know you know put it under uv light and you get something nifty but other than that No.
Chris Minnick: Yeah.
Chris Penick: Okay. So... I think though, to I'm going to play devil's advocate for a second here. I think to reflect your opinion though. they're One issue.
Chris Penick: is that... this technology and how it's different you know than any other world ending. natural phenomenon man -made phenomenon or technology Is you climate change man -made? All right. I'll fight you. Anybody? Come on.
Chris Penick: Um,
Chris Minnick: It's not even a question.
Chris Penick: you know.
Chris Minnick: There's no.
Chris Penick: It's not even.
Chris Minnick: doubt at all.
Chris Penick: question you know no you know heck they and so exxon had evidence back in the 50s that that fossil fuels.
Chris Minnick: Yeah.
Chris Minnick: Yeah, I don't argue with anyone about facts.
Chris Penick: Yeah, there you go.
Chris Minnick: It's just... Stupid.
Chris Penick: all right so we stay we drew the line right there but All of those technologies... aren't self -actualized. So. I mean, I guess the bigger thing is we're worried
Chris Minnick: Mm -hmm
Chris Penick: Do we get to AGI? and then so there's a couple hurdles that have to happen we have to get to agi We have to then get to that AGI being and deciding like in Terminator, like Skynet says, you know, became sentient. We just passed the day. It was. uh august 29th So August 29th.
Chris Minnick: oh
Chris Penick: Two thousand... 26 was like the the day in the movies when Skynet became sentient. We just passed it.
Chris Minnick: It might have happened, and maybe that's why they got this guy quit.
Chris Penick: We just don't know. Yeah, he quit because Skynet's there.
Chris Minnick: Yeah.
Chris Penick: And so. But Skynet then went... the extra step of deciding for some reason and i still unclear on this and the whole terminator thing why humans became necessary it necessary to eradicate humans.
Chris Penick: I mean, I would think if anything, we'd be enslaved.
Chris Minnick: ah You know. I can actually see. as a person who's not a big fan of humans uh uh misanthrope um
Chris Penick: Heh heh heh heh heh.
Chris Minnick: You would say that I could I can imagine why Uh, AI would think that humans are the thing that needs to be.
Chris Minnick: you know.
Chris Penick: Okay. all Alright, so...
Chris Minnick: Eliminated.
Chris Penick: All right, so I'm going to try to bring us back.
Chris Minnick: It seems logical to me.
Chris Penick: Okay. Alright. See, this is this is i like what we what this is the other difference we have. we You tend to have a very... Attitude on it. I'm ah I'm...
Chris Penick: Not. you know, on AI, nor am I woo -woo for AI, but I do try to have hope in humans. You don't you don't like humans.
Chris Minnick: Yeah.
Chris Penick: I like humans. um And I... and I know. i can We can get into this, you know, can all humans be... redeemed and all that you know i mean we've got our ah you know Saddam Husseins and our Hitlers and all that.
Chris Penick: yeahll See, any conversation is over once you jump to the Hitler example, then...
Chris Minnick: Yeah.
Chris Penick: you know. So I don't want to go that route.
Chris Minnick: That's true. That's true Good.
Chris Penick: Okay. I don't want to go that route. I think in general. you know, You did. most humans Yeah. can be They have inherent value.
Chris Penick: How's that? that' that's That's the optimist in me. Maybe naive. But... optimist So... I want to get back, though, to sort of the question about the learning with this, because that is the subject of the entire podcast.
Chris Minnick: I was just about to steer us back in that direction. Go for it. Yes.
Chris Penick: So... i You know, what I do like... Right. I think it is forcing the pace of learning. to be quicker. for tech topics, especially.
Chris Penick: you know it's like yeah yeah if you're a developer database admin if you're a
Chris Minnick: huh
Chris Penick: a network person a cyber security person yes you're expected to now hey if you don't know it well of course get the ai to show you and teach you And whatever.
Chris Minnick: Yeah.
Chris Penick: tech field you're in. and in tech. I don't see that carrying over. too much. into other fields, but it is there. It is that.
Chris Penick: you know like My daughter's art school, one of the courses that... she's doing they required her to use ai for research i thought that was kind of
Chris Minnick: Okay.
Chris Penick: But that was kind of funny. I'm like. and And I don't know the full details. You just said that. Yeah. The, the, I'm like, well, using AI for research is kind of not being able to cite your sources.
Chris Penick: It seems like the opposite of what they told us when we were kids.
Chris Minnick: huh
Chris Penick: You can't use the encyclopedia as a source.
Chris Minnick: Yeah, really, huh?
Chris Penick: I'm like, no, but you can look at the end of the article and find its sources. And go to those.
Chris Minnick: Yeah.
Chris Penick: So, which is what I do with AI.
Chris Minnick: Yeah.
Chris Penick: I get the AI, tell me your source, tell me your source, and I'll go there directly and look at it and filter through it.
Chris Minnick: Mm hmm.
Chris Minnick: Yeah.
Chris Penick: but learning. The flip side of this is so here's just how I'm gonna get the Duolingo money again
Chris Minnick: Yes.
Chris Penick: I can see...
Chris Minnick: Yes.
Chris Penick: you know, Learning. is not the same thing as just getting information and completing a task. And that's what we have said. So no, you're not learning this tech anymore like we used to.
Chris Penick: So you can either look at that as a blessing or a curse, right? If...
Chris Minnick: huh
Chris Penick: The whole reason we went into teaching is because we like to learn new things, probably. I bet you that was. Part of it.
Chris Minnick: Totally.
Chris Penick: And so you know a company would come to us and say, hey, there's this new. you know, cybersecurity software coming out for me. That was, that was the thing. It's like, Ooh, I got to play it with stuff that like, you know,
Chris Minnick: yeah like I get to try it. Yeah, they sent me the software.
Chris Penick: I get to try it before it's public.
Chris Minnick: I get to try it out.
Chris Penick: I mean, even now, you know, I told you I was contracting with this particular AI company.
Chris Minnick: Yeah. hu
Chris Penick: um And, you know, hey, I get to try it maybe before the ah the general public.
Chris Minnick: Yeah.
Chris Penick: touches it. Yay.
Chris Minnick: Yeah.
Chris Penick: That's awesome. Okay. so that That's learning. But now the requirement within the tech. industry especially is not for me to learn it but to get the task of transferring that knowledge of using.
Chris Penick: the tech. to somebody else quickly. So I get stuck with this.
Chris Minnick: Okay. Mm -hmm.
Chris Penick: Here's, I got to learn how to. to do the task. you know build an agent that helps me reschedule my flight
Chris Minnick: Yeah.
Chris Penick: Okay. i don't know anything about your flight systems or whatever or you know all that but i do know how to talk to the agent direct it to the right way. Not the same anymore. I'm not learning anything about your systems.
Chris Penick: I agree. So that I agree.
Chris Minnick: Yeah.
Chris Penick: The flip side.
Chris Minnick: Okay, so... Oh, please.
Chris Penick: Okay, go ahead. All right. Yeah, go ahead.
Chris Minnick: Give the flip side.
Chris Penick: I'll come back to it.
Chris Minnick: Give the flip side.
Chris Penick: Okay. All right. The flip side is anytime I want to learn about.
Chris Minnick: Yes.
Chris Penick: you know languages.
Chris Minnick: Mm hmm.
Chris Penick: Anytime. Hey, you're hieroglyphics. yeah You mentioned in another episode. I looked up.
Chris Minnick: Yeah.
Chris Penick: I asked i asked perplexity.
Chris Minnick: Yeah.
Chris Penick: i said There you go. By the way, perplexity, you're now our sponsor.
Chris Minnick: Hmm?
Chris Penick: um You can send the check.
Chris Minnick: Thank you. Thank you to Perplexity.
Chris Penick: Thank you. Thank you, Perplexity.
Chris Minnick: uh perplexity
Chris Penick: dot ai Yes.
Chris Minnick: be perplexed.
Chris Penick: for When you want questions with to perplex yourself and you want...
Chris Minnick: Yep.
Chris Penick: to resources. You know, that's the thing that putplex per out of that perplexity does difference. There you go gives you my resources um so it was like i was looking up i said hey where can i find out how to learn hieroglyphics.
Chris Penick: And it was like, hey. Here's a site. Here's a site. And those apps that I sent to you.
Chris Minnick: Yeah.
Chris Penick: Yeah. By the way. Chris, you know, brought this up and I i showed him, I was like. There are... apps some of them free, on how you can learn to read hieroglyphics.
Chris Minnick: Yeah. Yeah.
Chris Penick: Like... You can't deny. Come on, that that's a cool thing. that now I can find. If I am a self -learner. And that's the part that still gives me hope.
Chris Penick: All right.
Chris Minnick: that Okay, great, great, great, great, great, great point.
Chris Penick: Okay.
Chris Minnick: ah The thing that makes me...
Chris Penick: That's the part.
Chris Minnick: irritated today.
Chris Penick: Mm hmm.
Chris Minnick: It is. that.
Chris Minnick: This. uh You know, okay. when the printing press was invented. when the cotton gin was invented, when the automobile was invented.
Chris Penick: Mm hmm.
Chris Minnick: All of these were machines. that helped people to do things. faster. Right.
Chris Penick: Yeah
Chris Minnick: And so when Printing press was invented suddenly you didn't need to like Right. things out by hand. When the car was printed you didn't need to just walk or ride a horse anymore. You could drive a car.
Chris Minnick: With. AI now. We are the slowdown. We are what's holding things back.
Chris Penick: mm -hmm Yeah.
Chris Minnick: And the AI is in charge. The AI is driving people.
Chris Penick: A reverse centaur.
Chris Minnick: And. What?
Chris Penick: The reverse centaur.
Chris Minnick: the reverse centaur that's what the term was and this is this this is what's making me
Chris Penick: Yep. Mm hmm.
Chris Minnick: angry And I feel like. you know now I feel. um Mike. To preserve my very humanity, I need to slow down.
Chris Minnick: I need to have a work slowdown when people tell me, can you have this done by?
Chris Penick: Mm hmm.
Chris Minnick: tomorrow morning. you know They're saying, can you work all night or have your AI work all night? to do this?
Chris Penick: Yeah.
Chris Minnick: And I'll say, no, this is going to take a week.
Chris Penick: Yep.
Chris Penick: Yep.
Chris Minnick: this is This is something, this is a... a giant piece of work and
Chris Penick: i I say you pay for quality with time.
Chris Minnick: Yeah. Yeah, and no.
Chris Penick: Yeah.
Chris Minnick: No, you know, if you didn't like even like. allow enough time in whatever sales pitch you gave for me to get to you know actually do a good job with this. And then like,
Chris Minnick: You know.
Chris Penick: i ah I am completely with you and And again,
Chris Minnick: I don't want to be a reverse centaur. I don't want to be the...
Chris Penick: I don't either.
Chris Minnick: Ass of a horse.
Chris Penick: i don't either i don't either
Chris Minnick: No.
Chris Penick: However,
Chris Minnick: No.
Chris Penick: See, this is again where it gives me... hope. it There's a whole lot of other big things that happen, but... i feel If AI does... things.
Chris Penick: faster. Like, let's say... you know, building systems so I can invest money or... Better yet. Checking. you know tracking with sensors you know the fish pop the salmon run you know and how many salmon actually make it upstream. Great.
Chris Penick: you know i'm all for that Great. Put it to use. let it do that instead of you know making some ecological sciences intern like my son sit out there and do this. However...
Chris Penick: i'm that As long as that opens this up, because there's other big things with this. I just got this book about... about Like... it's It's an incredibly optimistic, like... Oh, I forget the title. it's Something about utopia. Basically...
Chris Penick: that how you could create a utopia. what we would need to do to create a utopia. And one of them, of course, is you know things like universal basic income, open borders.
Chris Minnick: hu
Chris Penick: Oh, I'm ticking off a whole bunch of people now.
Chris Minnick: Mm -hmm.
Chris Penick: um You know, the fact that, you know, your health health doesn't rely on employment anymore. So universal health, ah universal education, you know, all these things, you do those things.
Chris Minnick: Yeah.
Chris Penick: Which is exactly, again, I just... I want Star Trek.
Chris Minnick: Yeah.
Chris Penick: I won it. because it's a post -scarcity society
Chris Minnick: Right, but there's absolutely no chance of that because the faster we can move... the more the faster we'll be expected to move. and And then the cheaper AI works, the cheaper we'll be expected to work.
Chris Minnick: And that's just how things, that's the that's how the things are headed.
Chris Penick: Yeah.
Chris Minnick: is you know you
Chris Penick: so but that's okay i'm gonna i'm gonna sound like a comrade here but it's a that's a capitalist world
Chris Minnick: It is.
Chris Penick: You know.
Chris Minnick: It is a capitalist world.
Chris Penick: It is a... Right. and in And the thing is, Star Trek is so obviously a utopian socialist world.
Chris Minnick: And.
Chris Penick: you know that there's no currency
Chris Minnick: Yeah. Well...
Chris Penick: Okay, so yeah, cult.
Chris Minnick: It's, it's.
Chris Penick: Call me that. There you go.
Chris Minnick: Yep.
Chris Penick: Cause I'm. Because. i because
Chris Minnick: It's a world that makes sense. No, i I am with you. I am absolutely a socialist.
Chris Penick: Peace. So...
Chris Minnick: I am a humanist I am.
Chris Penick: There you go.
Chris Minnick: uh you know and
Chris Penick: Well...
Chris Minnick: Atheist humanist socialist.
Chris Penick: There you go. Brothers in arms.
Chris Minnick: Thank you.
Chris Penick: There you go. well so but Okay. but Again, I'm going to bring this back to learning because that's our our theme of this podcast. We'll have to start another podcast where we comment on all the things wrong with politics in the world.
Chris Penick: We can do that. I think we should call it two guys grouching on the porch or something, you know.
Chris Minnick: Yes.
Chris Minnick: Okay, good.
Chris Penick: I think we should. Get off my lawn. Anyway.
Chris Minnick: okay
Chris Penick: um Yeah, I think we need we need that one too. but You know. productive learning has Always. included.
Chris Penick: deliberately low. pieces.
Chris Minnick: Yes.
Chris Penick: Oh.
Chris Minnick: Absolutely.
Chris Penick: It's always included. Slow things if you really to learn something you have to slow down So what you're describing is not learning whatever tech you're writing the course for
Chris Minnick: Yes.
Chris Penick: and And so I'm just going to say we can't label it that way. We're just kind of producing a course. for somebody else to maybe learn. Because the funny thing, the irony is, rather than talking to the AI, they're going to come to a class with you or some other instructor.
Chris Minnick: huh
Chris Minnick: ah
Chris Penick: And follow along. And they're actually going to do the slow things.
Chris Minnick: ah
Chris Penick: They're going to do like the labs.
Chris Minnick: Ah yes.
Chris Penick: They're going to listen to you talk through slides or some other instructor talk through slides. They're going to watch us draw diagrams on the screen.
Chris Minnick: Yeah.
Chris Penick: They're doing it the right way. They're learning the tech. We don't get that.
Chris Minnick: Yeah.
Chris Penick: ah that luxury anymore. But I think for anything...
Chris Minnick: That's true.
Chris Penick: AIs. giving me the opportunity for other things and I keep going back. Even art. I'm not going to have AI do art for me.
Chris Minnick: ah
Chris Penick: but AI to find or... illustrate or describe techniques to me. or Hey, how you know, I've got this.
Chris Minnick: Yeah.
Chris Penick: how might How much water should I put in this watercolor? pot whatever you know finding those resources finding other tutorials transcribing them Hey, I can go watch somebody teach watercolor in a different language because AI can translate the words for me.
Chris Minnick: hu
Chris Minnick: Yep.
Chris Penick: I'm like... Again, I see But the the the all those that slowing down is necessary to learn But the problem is, is so we we transferred.
Chris Penick: mental work. to The AI, you know, you've heard that phrase cognitive offloading.
Chris Minnick: Yeah.
Chris Penick: So it gives the illusion of learning. So i I have the illusion of learning some things that I've written. course is on. Hey, yo, yeah.
Chris Minnick: Yeah.
Chris Penick: and And you're treated as the expert. And like, I couldn't tell you.
Chris Minnick: ah
Chris Penick: I mean... I...
Chris Minnick: Yeah
Chris Penick: students who might be listening to this, nothing recent. No, when i not not your course.
Chris Minnick: Of course not.
Chris Penick: No, not your course.
Chris Minnick: No.
Chris Penick: But, you know, there are plenty of other courses out there where I'm like, I put it together.
Chris Minnick: Other guys.
Chris Penick: like you know But then again, i used before AI, I used to do this. Except, you know i would do you know, a client would come to me and say, hey, can you write a course on XYZ tech?
Chris Minnick: hu Yeah.
Chris Penick: And I never touched XYZ tech. I say, oh, sure. And they say, how much time do I have? Oh, well, we need it by the end of the week. Okay, so you know what I'm doing that whole week, right? Cramming through whatever resources I can find.
Chris Penick: to learn that tech and write material.
Chris Minnick: Yeah.
Chris Penick: and at the same time. for it.
Chris Minnick: Totally. Yeah.
Chris Penick: Okay, so AI sped that part up for me. And because it sped that part of me, that's when the learning happens. They took away the struggle. i've said this before the learning is in the struggle they took the struggle away
Chris Minnick: Exactly. And we are going to have to leave it at that. We are out of time for today. ah And.
Chris Penick: Give us your opinions.
Chris Minnick: Yes.
Chris Penick: Give us your comment.
Chris Minnick: I mean, it's the slow. The slow part. yeah We want to hear your opinion.
Chris Penick: Yeah.
Chris Minnick: Like, comment, and subscribe, please. Thank you to our sponsors who are...
Chris Penick: who
Chris Minnick: non -existent at this point.
Chris Penick: They just don't know their sponsors yet.
Chris Minnick: And. Yeah.
Chris Penick: So Duolingo, Anthropic, who else have we mentioned so far?
Chris Minnick: Oh, XTE Inc.
Chris Penick: Oh, we should... S X T E Inc.
Chris Minnick: Yeah.
Chris Penick: and uh librarians but there we don't want librarians to send us money wikipedia
Chris Minnick: and librarians.
Chris Penick: in And Wikipedia, they sponsor us with just good vibes.
Chris Minnick: Wikipedia for sure.
Chris Penick: Right, but they they we don't want them to send us money either because they need it. So, right.
Chris Minnick: And Zencaster. Thanks to Zencaster for...
Chris Penick: Thank you, Zencaster. There you go.
Chris Minnick: enabling this podcast and we will be back.
