Chris Minnick: Hello everyone. Welcome to moving towards better. I'm Chris.

Chris Penick: And I'm Chris, and welcome to our podcast here.

Chris Minnick: yeah

Chris Penick: So, and you can call me dja Crispy, long story, but you'll find it in our bios, and you can call him...

Chris Minnick: See money.

Chris Penick: all right, and just just believe us for now.

Chris Minnick: Not that long of a story, but not has nothing to do with money anyway.

Chris Penick: Not that long of a story, but cool. Yes. Well, that's that's a problem. Okay.

Chris Minnick: Yes.

Chris Penick: So, and this is the the, let's see, it used to be organic and what's up, non-GMO. This time we're all natural. So, extra crispy.

Chris Minnick: And extra crispy.

Chris Penick: I get it, there you go.

Chris Minnick: ah

Chris Penick: So, you wanna talk about what we're gonna bring them today?

Chris Minnick: Yeah, totally. We have a very special episode. This is the first episode. of our moving towards better learning challenges.

Chris Minnick: And this is something that we just came up with, and this will be the inaugural run of this idea. The idea is that we will each pick something for the other one to learn over the next month. And then a month, we'll come back here and we'll talk about how it went.

Chris Minnick: We'll demonstrate our new found skill or knowledge. we will ah perhaps show video of us attempting to acquire some new skill or knowledge and we'll yeah we'll also talk about like why we chose the approach that we did and

Chris Penick: Stress attempting. Yeah.

Chris Penick: Ah, oh, well, and then you have to add what's the, what's the kicker. The kicker is that I don't get to choose myself. Chris doesn't get to choose himself.

Chris Minnick: nope right

Chris Penick: I get to choose for him and he going pick for me. So, and so we have a few rules.

Chris Minnick: And, and we'll put these on the screen right here.

Chris Penick: we Should we give them the background on the rules? Yeah.

Chris Penick: Yeah, so, okay.

Chris Minnick: Yes. Number rule.

Chris Penick: All right.

Chris Minnick: Number one, it must be something that the other person does not already know. Rule number two must be something that exists outside a computer. And this is something that I've, I feel very strongly toward because I do, I learn new things on a computer all day long.

Chris Penick: Yeah, that's ah kind of our livelihood. So, all right.

Chris Minnick: Number three, number three, it's something small enough to make progress in a month. So it's not going to be, you know, like, I don't know this.

Chris Penick: Well, in progress is particularly ambiguous. i mean, that you can you can view improvement.

Chris Minnick: Well, it's not, it's not going to be become fluent in Russian, for instance.

Chris Penick: That you...

Chris Penick: There goes that one.

Chris Minnick: That was yours.

Chris Penick: That was, that was mine.

Chris Minnick: Yeah. Yeah.

Chris Penick: No, shoot. No, actually I was thinking Klingon would be better, but I know I think you've worked on Klingon before, so can't do that. All right. Yeah, but yes, right. Something, at least that there's, well even if it's an iota of measurement of improvement, that's all it needs.

Chris Minnick: Yeah. Yeah.

Chris Penick: That's all it needs. Okay.

Chris Minnick: Next. It's not expensive to get started. So, you know, like get your pilot license. It would be a bad one.

Chris Penick: Yeah, because I'm poor. So, yeah, there you go.

Chris Minnick: Yeah.

Chris Penick: Yeah. um

Chris Minnick: Next one, not potentially life threatening. So get your pilot license would not be one.

Chris Penick: Learn to skydive. You know, there you go. So, yeah. So does that make it a little less exciting, though?

Chris Minnick: ah

Chris Penick: You know, I mean.

Chris Minnick: I don't know. we just We have a lot of rules, but you know we're going to see how it goes because there's a lot of things out there to learn that will fit within our cozy middle-class lifestyles that we're used to here.

Chris Penick: Okay.

Chris Penick: Yeah.

Chris Penick: Okay.

Chris Minnick: All right.

Chris Penick: Okay.

Chris Minnick: Next up.

Chris Penick: Whatever. Next up, go ahead.

Chris Minnick: Not obviously illegal. So, you know, we left some wiggle room here for things that might be questionable or, you know, maybe would be potentially illegal in some circumstances, but it sort of rules out like, you know, yeah, it sort of rules out, like become a bank robber, you know, that's, that's yeah.

Chris Penick: Depends on your jurisdiction.

Chris Penick: Or Hitman. Yeah. Yeah. Well, the Hitman also does the life-threatening one, too.

Chris Minnick: And hit man.

Chris Penick: So checks two boxes.

Chris Minnick: Yeah.

Chris Penick: You know?

Chris Minnick: Yes.

Chris Penick: Checks two boxes. I love it. All right.

Chris Minnick: And then the final rule.

Chris Penick: And the most important rule.

Chris Minnick: Yeah. Is each person can refuse the first choice, but must take the backup choice if they refuse the first. So each of us has chosen two challenges, two moving towards better challenges for the other.

Chris Penick: Ooh. Ooh.

Chris Minnick: And we have these ready to go.

Chris Penick: and

Chris Minnick: in our notebooks of doom.

Chris Penick: notebooks of doom.

Chris Minnick: That's right.

Chris Penick: There you go. that That messed with your audio right there. Sorry. yeah

Chris Minnick: It's all right. We'll, you know, adjust.

Chris Penick: Fix it in post.

Chris Minnick: We'll fix it in post.

Chris Penick: Yes. All right. All right. You want to go first?

Chris Minnick: Uh, gosh.

Chris Penick: Since ju you've, or do you want, okay, you're ah for me, picking for me, right?

Chris Minnick: All right. I will go first. Um,

Chris Penick: Is that the deal?

Chris Minnick: Picking for Chris Penix. So cue the moving towards better challenge music.

Chris Penick: We need like some sort of drum roll or something too. Yeah, that would be great.

Chris Minnick: Uh, yeah.

Chris Penick: There you go.

Chris Minnick: Yeah. We'll put that in there.

Chris Penick: Okay. We'll find some good spooky music.

Chris Minnick: All right.

Chris Penick: Okay. All right. i'm I am waiting eager with anticipation.

Chris Minnick: Are you on pins and needles for the first? Okay.

Chris Penick: Pins and needles.

Chris Minnick: Are you ready?

Chris Penick: I'm ready.

Chris Minnick: Okay.

Chris Penick: yeah

Chris Minnick: The skill that I have chosen for you, Chris Penick to present next month, somewhere around the end of August, 2026 spinning a basketball on your finger.

Chris Penick: to Oh, okay. um i I can see how this would be very useful too.

Chris Penick: so this ah Especially you know when I get down to the the basketball stadium.

Chris Minnick: Yeah.

Chris Penick: so All right.

Chris Minnick: Can you imagine if you're in a classroom teaching a class and all of sudden you pick up a basketball and you're like, yeah.

Chris Penick: Just...

Chris Penick: Hey, while I'm teaching, while I'm teaching, i don't know, you know, Python or something like that. there I love it. I love it. All right. All right. I'm fine with that. I'm fine with that. Okay. And i in and per our rule, we decided to, okay, that we don't know, we don't get to learn in the backup if we accept the first.

Chris Penick: I'm going accept the first this time, so which means the backup could be something really, really

Chris Minnick: Right.

Chris Penick: Really, really scary. Who knows?

Chris Minnick: I might use that next time.

Chris Penick: ah There you go. Or use it next time. That's good, too. All right. i Okay. this This is pretty good. I like this. This is a nice, short, simple thing here. I i don't know, man, though.

Chris Penick: At least you did ask me to make, like, a three-pointer because that would have been...

Chris Minnick: We'll see.

Chris Minnick: and no

Chris Penick: Okay. All right. Because, know, I'm a little vertically challenged, too. So i don't know how what that makes them.

Chris Minnick: Yeah, no trouble.

Chris Penick: um Okay. Well... I have then. All right. For you. Okay. Now this one, this one might involve a tiny expense.

Chris Penick: Um, so I, my my first challenge to you is to learn how to, since you have all your plants back there.

Chris Minnick: All right.

Chris Penick: All right.

Chris Minnick: Hmm.

Chris Penick: i want you to learn how to make a macro may plant hanger. Yeah.

Chris Minnick: i Oh, we, we, yeah, I have done that before, actually.

Chris Penick: Have you done this before? If you've done it

Chris Penick: Darn it. I knew it. I knew it. Okay. I'm just, I see. That's why I was asking.

Chris Minnick: That's a good one. That's a good one. But yeah, it's something that I've already done.

Chris Penick: I'm just going to scratch it off. Go. He knows this one already.

Chris Minnick: ye

Chris Penick: Dang it. Okay.

Chris Minnick: There's a funny story behind that too. was my fifth fifth grade.

Chris Penick: Mm-hmm.

Chris Minnick: We had um our science teacher. Was not really a science teacher. um We would go to class and all we would do is spend the entire period um making these macrame plant hangers.

Chris Penick: Okay. This raises a few questions. One, not a science teacher, not really a science teacher. That phrase just kind of worries me for a second.

Chris Minnick: It was a Catholic school. So, It's

Chris Penick: Oh, completely explains it. Nevermind. That's it. Done. All right.

Chris Minnick: just somebody filling in. yep Yeah.

Chris Penick: Other duties as assigned. That's the way how we used to describe that. Yep. Okay. Got it. Got it. All right. All right. Well, I know that you like art.

Chris Penick: However, I've seen your style of art. So I figured I could i could work with this.

Chris Minnick: Mm-hmm.

Chris Penick: i could I could do something a little bit sneakier here. All right? Very popular style of art these days is anime. I want you

Chris Minnick: oh ah

Chris Penick: i want you to draw us come up with an anime version of you and me what do you think okay okay all right see because you you i mean so it's it's not something you've done before i mean you you you draw and you and you you paint but it's not something in specific you know if i get into the details you haven't done that before i don't think right

Chris Minnick: it I love it.

Chris Minnick: Yeah.

Chris Minnick: Yeah.

Chris Minnick: No, I have not. And honestly, i don't know the first thing about anime. And so this is also going to be something where I'm going to have to learn something about anime.

Chris Penick: Yep.

Chris Minnick: And I may even have to watch some anime and I've always resisted it just because i'm like, oh, well, that's not for me. That's for somebody else. That's for the kids.

Chris Penick: Okay. Oh, no.

Chris Minnick: And so

Chris Penick: You're you're like dismissing like a large portion of Japan and US and the world, for that matter.

Chris Minnick: I'm telling you, this is actually, you have given me the perfect challenge here because it gives me an opportunity to expand my horizons.

Chris Penick: Yeah.

Chris Penick: Okay. All right.

Chris Minnick: And I hope that you gain a new appreciation for your hometown team there, the Washington Senators who play the the Harlem Globetrotters.

Chris Penick: Yes.

Chris Penick: Yes.

Chris Minnick: Yes. Yes.

Chris Penick: Well, I... Oh, I see... In the Globetrotters... I saw the Globetrotters live when I was a kid.

Chris Minnick: And they played the the Washington Senators, right?

Chris Penick: So...

Chris Penick: Yep. I have seen them play the Washington Senators.

Chris Minnick: Yeah.

Chris Penick: I, you know, but I also like when they like play the local team is kind of an exhibition.

Chris Minnick: Oh, yeah. Yeah.

Chris Penick: Oh, and yeah, I always wanted to just have a bucket over on the side filled with confetti just in case, you know, so that's what I should do in class, you know, ready for or, you know.

Chris Minnick: Yeah.

Chris Minnick: Totally.

Chris Penick: so So, all right. I think this sounds perfect because, yeah, I could just sit there and completely, you know, during during a break, especially for the classroom, just spin that ball.

Chris Minnick: But I'm really curious about this because I think it's going require a lot more sort of overall sense of balance.

Chris Penick: All right.

Chris Penick: I... I have tried before.

Chris Minnick: It might be very difficult.

Chris Penick: Yeah, i I have a feeling that all the times you see people do that.

Chris Minnick: Yeah.

Chris Penick: Well, I do know. Okay, so I do know in kind of looking around. I've never done this before myself, so we still fit in the rules here.

Chris Minnick: Mm-hmm.

Chris Penick: But I do know that like sometimes like when you see it in like TV, they they kind of deflate the ball a little bit.

Chris Minnick: Oh.

Chris Penick: that's That to me seems like cheating and because like I see the players do it sometimes when they're actually in a game and they'll spin it real quick before they get back on the court. you know And I'm like, I think that's a different thing.

Chris Minnick: Yeah.

Chris Penick: So i know we'll see. ill have to find out. i have to find out. Can you actually spin a ball that's deflated?

Chris Minnick: I can't wait.

Chris Penick: that's that's Oh, this is perfect. Yeah, this works great. All right. So we have...

Chris Minnick: you need to know the physics of it too.

Chris Penick: Yeah, I'm going to have to like figure out, can you do it with a fully inflated ball? is there Is there a trick to it? Oh, man. I'm going to have to like look at videos of...

Chris Penick: you Videos don't count as something with the computer, right? I can watch...

Chris Minnick: No, no, you can do research any way you want.

Chris Penick: Yeah, okay.

Chris Minnick: I'm going to to watch a lot of videos to learn something about anime. Yeah.

Chris Penick: Yeah, exactly. So that's what I figured. Okay, so... you know But it's it's still... the We're not doing the action with the computer. I'm not going to build a little... spinning robot something like I'll do a shout out for like i don't know Mark Rober you okay uh oh that this becomes a whole different episode a true crime episode now there you go

Chris Minnick: Sorry, there's a noise in the house. I'm trying to figure out what it is ah All right.

Chris Minnick: No, I just have my headphones on so I can only hear you. But I think there's a dog running around upstairs. i think Jill just came home.

Chris Penick: uh Got it. Got it.

Chris Minnick: True crime.

Chris Penick: Yeah. Well, true crime. Hey, those are popular. You know, stay tuned, folks.

Chris Minnick: Yes, they are. Mm-hmm.

Chris Penick: Next time. There you go. All right. All right. Then I'm set. So the the gauntlets have been thrown.

Chris Minnick: Yes.

Chris Penick: All right. And to for all our listeners out there who you know aren't clear on this, Chris C. Money Minick is going to have to learn how to draw.

Chris Penick: and come up with, see, this is a character, this character design, come up with anime versions of us. And I am so looking forward to that.

Chris Minnick: Oh.

Chris Penick: And, and...

Chris Minnick: And DJ Crispy, Chris Pennick is going to learn how to spin a basketball on his finger. I don't care which finger it is, but it must be a basketball.

Chris Penick: you Oh, wait, wait, we could make this and we could make this rated R if I used a different finger, so...

Chris Minnick: That's fine.

Chris Penick: No, that's fine. we we We expect mostly adults.

Chris Minnick: i mean, what I don't know i which one which which which finger is easiest to spin

Chris Penick: watch you Don't they do?

Chris Minnick: with

Chris Penick: i mean, ah can't do that one there. i but That might work. yeah

Chris Minnick: It's totally up to you. you do you

Chris Penick: Ooh, pinky. Do the pinky.

Chris Minnick: You do do your own research.

Chris Penick: did be

Chris Minnick: Yes.

Chris Penick: do Do your own research like they do on the inner tubes.

Chris Minnick: Yes, that's right.

Chris Penick: There you go.

Chris Minnick: All right, cool.

Chris Penick: All right. We got it.

Chris Minnick: and Until next week will be a regularly scheduled, interesting, no, different and interesting episode of Moving Towards Better.

Chris Penick: All right.

Chris Penick: I was going to say you said no to interesting for a second there. I was a little worried.

Chris Minnick: ah

Chris Penick: i mean, we would try to make them interesting.

Chris Minnick: Well, yeah, I think it's going great.

Chris Penick: Yeah. And so moving towards better. And we all right. So I hope the one thing you take from this is that you try something similar.

Chris Penick: Grab a buddy. Do something similar. If you have suggestions for us, Ooh, you can send them to us, you know, or put them in comments and we won't be as big a surprise, but Hey, and remember our rules though, you know, not potentially life threatening and not obviously illegal.

Chris Minnick: That's a good idea.

Chris Minnick: huh

Chris Penick: So, I mean, card counting technically isn't illegal.

Chris Minnick: We'll put those in the comments too. Yep.

Chris Penick: So, you know, all right, there you go. All right. So that's it for this time. Nice, short, sweet. And we'll see you again soon.

Chris Minnick: Ciao.
