Global Sports Podcast Network
Hello and welcome to the Daily Southampton and today the Daily Palace, part of the Global Sports Podcast Network. We are back to real football, we have a crossover, it is fantastic time. your My name is Greg Elliott, as always joined by my good friend and co-host Zach.
00:00:27
Global Sports Podcast Network
How doing Zach?
00:00:27
Zak
Hello, hello.
00:00:28
Zak
Yeah, not too bad, mate. I've got a bit of a cough. I'll make sure to mute if I randomly have to c cough my guts up because that doesn't make good viewing or sounds. So other than that, pretty, pretty standard, mate.
00:00:39
Global Sports Podcast Network
And the joining us from the Daily Palace, Dan. are you doing, Dan?
00:00:43
Dan Tanner
I'm doing all right. Still early enough in the week. Still vibing off of the FA Cup quarterfinal. Going to Wembley, so I'm more cushy. So let's give this round.
00:00:52
Global Sports Podcast Network
Happy days.
00:00:55
Global Sports Podcast Network
Happy days. It's almost a tale of two opposing levels of excitement coming into this fixture, right? Because you must be absolutely buzzing, you know, pretty much confirmed safe, pushing for mid to top bit top half of the table, FA Cup semi-final, day out at Wembley, and we're thinking, oh no, we've got to watch Saints play again.
00:01:05
Dan Tanner
yeah so
00:01:18
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:01:20
Zak
It's like, oh, it's almost the end of the season.
00:01:20
Dan Tanner
follow up with it We have to do this again. I'm
00:01:24
Zak
Almost the end of the season, mate. Just a couple more losses.
00:01:33
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah so how are you how you feeling Dan heading into to Wednesday night are you confident it's just going to be a carrying on as business as normal
00:01:40
Dan Tanner
Pretty confident about it. just We're on an insane run at the minute and watching Palace play on the weekend against Fulham, just how clinical sort of clinical and so good we looked playing the other day. I'm really confident on so the more or less the back end of the season.
00:02:00
Dan Tanner
I think we've got a couple of the big teams to kind of contend with, but fairly confident we can... Well, we're basically where we should have been from the very beginning of the season. And maybe with a little bit of luck, we might be able to sort of maybe push into Europe, maybe you slightly knock on that door a little bit, maybe get into the top 10, which will put the icing on the cake of a really sort of... I know you guys are probably used to this, but we had a pretty short beginning of the season as well.
00:02:29
Dan Tanner
But I know yours kind of carried on, but I'm trying not to dig it in, but you've probably got a lot of that already. Yeah.
00:02:36
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, in it's been some tough viewing, to be honest.
00:02:37
Zak
and
00:02:40
Global Sports Podcast Network
And, uh...
00:02:41
Zak
It's really nice of you to say beginning of the season.
00:02:43
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:02:44
Dan Tanner
women things and if you I think it was eight or nine without a win or even a i think we have one point in eight and it's just like we were in the same position you guys probably were like what is going on come on
00:02:46
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:02:57
Zak
Yeah.
00:02:58
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:02:59
Zak
yeah
00:03:00
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, it's going to be an interesting one. I feel like every crossover episode for the entire season, I've asked the question, do you think it's possible that you sort of look past us and we become a banana skin for for this sort of run that you're on?
00:03:16
Global Sports Podcast Network
It hasn't happened yet, but I'm just i'm putting it in the universe. LAUGHTER
00:03:23
Zak
Oh.
00:03:23
Dan Tanner
If it's going to be anybody, is going to be Palace. We do have a great history of making a meal of it. I think it was Leicester or something like that the other couple of weeks ago. Easy victory, no problem.
00:03:35
Dan Tanner
So what do we do? Throw the ball straight to them. So we could very, very easily be Palace that does us off the whole banana skin thing. We'll shoot ourselves in the foot. We make life difficult for ourselves on occasion.
00:03:48
Dan Tanner
We have previous, really.
00:03:50
Global Sports Podcast Network
So what's changed to sort of drive this run on from you guys? where Where's it come from? Where's it all started going right?
00:04:00
Dan Tanner
We've been asked this a few times. To begin with, I really don't know, but after watching the last couple of games, it's... We recycle the ball really well. So once we lose it, everybody's compact and gets the ball back really quickly.
00:04:14
Dan Tanner
And then we'll get it out to the playmakers with high percentage passing. a little one to, so if Tyree Mitchell gets the ball on the left, left wing back to position, he knows exactly who to pass to, where Eze is going to be, where Wharton is going to be.
00:04:29
Dan Tanner
And it's just, I think that's what's kind of, turned it around sort of simplifying it. Don't try and be too complicated and just be difficult to play against.
00:04:40
Dan Tanner
And kind of the counter attack has gotten very sort of efficient as well. We used to at the beginning of the season, it was get the ball to as a, he puts his head down, runs end to the other end of the pitch, try and shoot for 30 yards from 30 yards out, give the ball back to the opposition. And we start again.
00:04:58
Dan Tanner
Now it's a little bit more of a buildup. But we can also do it really quickly as well. Getting out to like Munoz in particular has become quite deadly, especially in the last couple of months.
00:05:09
Dan Tanner
Even got a couple of goals and assists in there. So I think it's just sort we've gotten back to basics and just made like so made it easier for our players to work out where they all are and just to make life difficult for everybody else, really.
00:05:25
Global Sports Podcast Network
Zach, are you seeing any points to take confidence from? the Is it really just a case of counting down these nine games that are left, or have we got something to fight for?
00:05:38
Zak
You'd think it would be enough to not want to be the worst Premier League team of all time. But I just don't think that that's that's the case. It does seem a lot of them have switched off a little bit.
00:05:48
Zak
But I think that our biggest opportunity probably was that Wolves game. We had a bit of momentum to build off of. And then for some reason started with that striker. Which was an insanely weird decision. but something that we're all kind of now used to.
00:06:02
Zak
So I don't know. I think it's i think that... it's almost like the antithesis of what we've done, right? It's, uh, okay. Well, if we, if we keep training and simplify everything and, and, and, you know, build up to, to understand and have that kind of footballing chemistry, I guess is the word in my head.
00:06:22
Zak
you know, you end up with a team like Palace where nothing's hugely changed. Whereas with us, we have switched manager, switched styles, switched personnel every game. We don't know who's starting.
00:06:32
Zak
We've had Joe Arebo, our top goal scorer, centre-back a few times. They don't ever play... Juric doesn't like to play centre-backs centre-backs. So I guess what I'm really hoping over the last two weeks is that there is some level of cohesion and plan and ability to address, well, hey, this has been awful and it's going to be awful.
00:06:53
Zak
And Juric's perspective, he's going to lose his job. Like, it's the writings of the war pretty much anyway. Does he want to go out with not being, like, being worse than Nathan Jones? Because that's where at. And that's a low bar to begin with.
00:07:06
Zak
So I guess what I'm at is I'm hoping for some... sort of reaction and as I told you before Greg I know that you're all about getting those wins but still think we just need to draw out some draws and if it if is just one of them I will take that so is that the positivity you expected from me mate
00:07:26
Global Sports Podcast Network
If anything, it's slightly more positive. my
00:07:31
Global Sports Podcast Network
and Okay. I'm going to come back and talk about the season as a whole bit, but first a message from our partners at Bionic.
00:08:18
Zak
every time.
00:08:19
Global Sports Podcast Network
Every time.
00:08:19
Dan Tanner
in a free time.
00:08:22
Global Sports Podcast Network
Okay, and we are back. Okay, Dan, I'm going to throw it over to you. Obviously, pushing on for top half of the table now with this sort of run, I think I read an article that there might be so as many as 11 European places available for English teams at the end of the season if the planets align and something crazy happens, which is... which is absurd but I mean at the start of the season before that sort of bad run is that what the target was do you think or was it just to sort of stay comfortably in this sort of middle pack of teams
00:09:00
Dan Tanner
I think the plan was to kind of stay somewhere where we were last season and a couple of seasons before, like sitting around the 10th to 13th position. We haven't got the squad to really push forwards.
00:09:14
Dan Tanner
And we just sort as I've said earlier, on some games, we can like shoot ourselves in the foot. Like we can go to the Etihad and go and win one nil.
00:09:24
Dan Tanner
And then next week we'll go and go and lose to Ipswich or something. We have this great, our form will sort swing wildly one way to the other in most seasons. And this season is no different. We were a massive slow starter.
00:09:38
Dan Tanner
Everybody was going, why aren't you further up the table? Why you struggling? Why are you struggling? We're going, we don't know. It's largely the same squad we had last season and the same manager, et cetera. Nothing had really changed, but just something just was wasn't right.
00:09:54
Dan Tanner
And then we had, and now we've had our sort of resurgence So yeah, I don't think the the plan wasn't to probably push forward and the plan probably wasn't to go deep into the FA Cup and the League Cup, but that's the way so it's gone at the moment because Glasner is very much of when he goes into a game, he's out to win it.
00:10:14
Dan Tanner
He's not going to try and settle for draw or anything. He's going to put the best team he possibly can to try and win the game. And when he doesn't, I think he's sort of it probably does irk him and it really annoys him when we weren't playing to the same, potential the the potential we should do.
00:10:30
Dan Tanner
Cause as said, the beginning of the season, we weren't losing by a lot. It was one nils, two ones kind of thing. We weren't getting beaten. It's just, we weren't finishing. We weren't being part of putting up any kind of fight against the opposition.
00:10:45
Dan Tanner
So have to base with that would be my answer to your question that I don't think, European was spots were on the cards, but it's were it's a distinct possibility now.
00:10:58
Global Sports Podcast Network
Definitely yeah a lot closer with a nice trip to Wembley to boot as well. Hopefully two trips to Wembley, right? That's the the way you want to kick on. I'm going to set myself up for disappointment and ask, have you you seen much of Saints this season? is there any Do you see any form of threat from us at all so that might do some damage?
00:11:16
Dan Tanner
i i will have to admit, I haven't seen a lot of you guys, the I've been kind of paying attention to Palace, so just sort of, yeah, it's all like looking at you the the results over the last sort of month, two months or so, and I go, how has it gone that badly, really?
00:11:21
Zak
Barely been on TV.
00:11:24
Global Sports Podcast Network
Right, you saved yourself.
00:11:25
Zak
That's fair.
00:11:36
Dan Tanner
Because like the last time we in the but did get relegated again, but you were like three times as many points as three times, it's like, what happens? How have you gotten into this position where
00:11:48
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah we
00:11:49
Dan Tanner
The sort of a record is on the line.
00:11:52
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, it's we have been unfortunate at times to not have more points than we've got, I think. I think it's fair to say early on in the season when we were really desperate to sort of get some momentum going, there were a few VAR decisions that really did us some harm. Yeah.
00:12:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
But we've really struggled with mentality on the pitch. As soon as any little thing goes against us, that sort of seems to be it. The whole team capitulates and there doesn't seem to be any sort of fight back or ability to just push on and get anything.
00:12:27
Global Sports Podcast Network
We've had spells where we've looked half decent and spells like 70 minutes against United and uh, 45 against Liverpool, where we've looked like a team that shouldn't be in the position we're in, but there have also been spells where, uh, we look like we are exactly where we deserve to be.
00:12:46
Global Sports Podcast Network
sometimes we, much like you were saying, and we, we will just gift, uh, goals to any striker who is struggling for a form. we just seem to be the team that will break anyone's stripe, streak and patch. And it's, uh,
00:13:01
Global Sports Podcast Network
It's been really painful, to be honest. Yeah, it's going to be a long run-in with the writing very much on the wall, as it has been for some time now. Although, somehow not mathematically yet.
00:13:14
Global Sports Podcast Network
So...
00:13:15
Zak
somehow
00:13:16
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah. Yeah, it's it's definitely been a tough one, but... It is what it is. We'll bounce on to next season and hope for some more fun football there, at least.
00:13:26
Global Sports Podcast Network
That's That's the only hope, right, Zach?
00:13:29
Zak
can't wait can't wait mate i'm i'm so done with with this season at this point and it is it's it's incredible parallels right like He's talking about how it really irks Glasner that you you would sort of lose and the silly little margins.
00:13:43
Zak
And I think the problem is, is that we we have had the excuses of VAR decisions. And as much as we had a very, very personable manager, and I think that they were like very much fighting for him, as soon as he went,
00:13:55
Zak
they've all kind of switched off apart from the ones that weren't his favorites that have all switched on, but they're not, they're still, everybody isn't really clicking together. We've had a couple of sort of players we brought in that have wanted to leave and have left in January.
00:14:08
Zak
a couple of players that, you know, like Flint Downs is a perfect example. of somebody that came in we were very very excited he was like you know we we was someone we really wanted to get after the success of last season and then like by january it's like yeah i want to move to ipswich it's like mate come on have some more i ambition you just sidestepped into a team that's also going to get relegated and i think that's the thing right is that it is i know you hit the nail on the head greg whereas it's a big it's a big mentality thing But i I also do wonder, it's like, just everything that could have gone wrong at times that could have gone wrong have remained wrong. And we never we've never built a bit run.
00:14:47
Zak
Like, even even our new manager bounce was like a nil-nil draw.
00:14:51
Global Sports Podcast Network
before he was in charge as well.
00:14:52
Zak
true Yeah, before he was in charge.
00:14:53
Global Sports Podcast Network
That was a big drop for him.
00:14:54
Zak
and And then we had a couple of games, including AX yourselves, where like we scored quite early on. And then he hit us back straight away. And then Eze scored a goal. And then that was that, right on the wall. And I think it's just... it's It's a hard question to answer, like how it's gone so catastrophically wrong.
00:15:13
Zak
Because I think we're still trying to figure out. And the ownership are definitely trying to figure out. But I'm hoping... yeah I don't know, that maybe maybe when it's mathematical, maybe the pressure's off a little bit and maybe they can just play with a bit of freedom. And that is when maybe they'll beat the record. But I really struggle to see where we take points the rest of this season, especially against yourselves, because you know I think that, you again, it's showing that grit and determination to get through the bad spells.
00:15:41
Zak
And it's just something we haven haven't done this season.
00:15:45
Global Sports Podcast Network
Honestly, I still think our only real hope is accidentally beating Leicester.
00:15:45
Zak
Haven't needed to.
00:15:51
Global Sports Podcast Network
That's very much enough.
00:15:51
Zak
Potentially. or or Or again, like we really we really upset Arsenal the last day of the season.
00:15:53
Global Sports Podcast Network
That would be enough point.
00:15:57
Zak
or or Or actually, the classic Saints thing, the thing that we think is going to happen, and we discussed this on a previous episode, is that to to have the last game Goodison Park against against Saints and then Saints to go on and win it just to upset every single Evertonian out there is just a very thing where, well, we're already like the loser of this season. We may as well be the villain as well.
00:16:17
Zak
So... yeah That's kind of where we're at. It's some very, very contrasting fortunes where, you know, wow what we'd give for a cup run now, eh, Greg?
00:16:27
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, I don't know. less Less chance for Saints to ruin my weekend or week in this case has actually been somewhat of a blessing over the last couple decades, it has to be said.
00:16:32
Zak
okay
00:16:39
Global Sports Podcast Network
Okay, so we're going to go for some score predictions, but first a message from our partners at Zencaster. Here at the Global Sports Podcast Network, we spent a lot of time selecting our delivery platform.

00:17:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
Okay, so we are back. Dan, I'm going to and throw you under the bus first and let you get your prediction out there. How do you see it playing out under the lights?
00:17:18
Dan Tanner
Oh, so I go first as a guest. Yeah, just as a guest, you get to go.
00:17:21
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, that's it.
00:17:24
Dan Tanner
that Fair enough. I'm going to stick with my usual one. is So I think it's going to be probably a two nil. I don't expect to sort of go hell for leather or anything, but we've been so good in the defense and going forward now, we've got some real weapons.
00:17:40
Dan Tanner
Mateta is definitely going to be up for it, especially with the your defensive record. I think he's definitely going to be sniffing around and going, I'm I can probably get a couple more. And Eze definitely on form after FA Cup 1 and an FA First England goal.
00:17:56
Dan Tanner
I think he's going to be a real handful for you guys. So I would think a fairly comfortable 2-0, but I don't think it's going to...
00:18:00
Global Sports Podcast Network
what goal it was to make as well.
00:18:05
Dan Tanner
They're not going to be all guns blazing. I think it's probably going to be some point in the second half, maybe late first half before the goals sort really start going in. because we don't really go hell for leather.
00:18:18
Global Sports Podcast Network
think that's I think that's a fair and balanced prediction. Zach? how How positive are you feeling?
00:18:26
Zak
Not enough for us to to win, I'm afraid, Greg. and The last time I really hoped for a nil-nil draw, we still lost miserably. So, it would probably I would say probably at a 2-0 to Palace as well. don't know if weve I don't know if they... and so Unless they've sorted out the way they want to play attacking, I just don't see... you know Marteta last time as well had Bednarak on toast to the entirety of the game.
00:18:46
Zak
And to the point where it was like, remember it got to about the 80th minute, Greg? And we were like, how is Bednarek still on the field? Like how he hadn't been carded at that point. Like he and he had pulled out every trick in the book and just just couldn't handle him.
00:18:59
Global Sports Podcast Network
I'd do a rainbow.
00:18:59
Zak
And obviously at that point, that but there was no real need.
00:19:00
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:19:01
Zak
And, you know, as you said, SA's on form and and you guys are just on form. And I think for you, it would be a sort of very standard sort of three points and probably well-deserved as well.
00:19:11
Zak
And and you're you're in the form for it. whereas we're we're really struggling. And it'll be interesting to see how they try and piece together the sort of team back after the international break as well, where some of our team were actually away. Some of them actually got wins for the first time ever.
00:19:27
Zak
i say ever, in a footballer's mind. It's been as sort a long season, right? So, yeah, I don't really, can't really see where we're creating. I just, I worry now, Greg, because if we're not starting strikers, I don't know where the goals come from.
00:19:40
Zak
So I'm really sorry to disappoint you, but
00:19:43
Global Sports Podcast Network
and I mean, that was a concern when we were playing Strikers, to be fair.
00:19:47
Zak
this is also true.
00:19:47
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:19:48
Zak
But at least it's not me saying 5-0, because that's where I've been at this point. I can just get out of D&D dice, roll the D20 guess, and that's pretty much where it's at.
00:19:52
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:19:56
Dan Tanner
Right, I got a critical 20. but i got a critical twenty Let's go.
00:19:58
Zak
Yeah, golly, go, go.
00:19:59
Dan Tanner
of an international break.
00:20:00
Dan Tanner
it's a critical one
00:20:02
Global Sports Podcast Network
I read on the Echo page yesterday one of the most amusing and slightly depressing stats I've seen all season, and that is that yesterday marked the longest period of days where Saints have gone without being beat this season because we haven't played in 17
00:20:21
Dan Tanner
because it's adjustable right
00:20:23
Zak
yeah Oh, and that's why we've been so happy and cheery. Wonderful.
00:20:29
Dan Tanner
Oh, my God.
00:20:29
Global Sports Podcast Network
But that said, I am so far through the cycle of hope. i haven't predicted a Saints loss yet this season, and it's not going to start now, let's be honest.
00:20:41
Global Sports Podcast Network
if If I've kept the hope alive this far, I don't see it changing. I think 2-1, classic, because I don't see us keeping a clean sheet.
00:20:54
Global Sports Podcast Network
LAUGHTER
00:20:54
Zak
but At least you're always honest about that now. The clean sheets stopped about the end of January, so...
00:20:59
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah. And maybe we'll accidentally score two goals. Maybe one of them will be an own goal because that's probably, i think that would actually push own goals against as our technical top scorer for the goal for the season.
00:21:09
Zak
you it's its Top goal scorer of the season.
00:21:13
Global Sports Podcast Network
So... tall
00:21:14
Zak
where Where else are the goals coming from, Greg? Who else you reckon?

pool trip over one. Put it in the net.
00:21:18
Zak
Perfect.
00:21:19
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:21:19
Zak
Perfect. Perfect.
00:21:21
Global Sports Podcast Network
It's... It's what we want to see. look It would be really nice to get a win at home or something at home before the season ends. And it is my son's birthday that we're all going down for. So hopefully he can bring the luck and not just further add to the level of character building that we're introducing to him to at such a young age.
00:21:45
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:21:45
Zak
Well, what's your...
00:21:46
Dan Tanner
I was going to say, that's a brilliant term, character building. That's that's what we're calling it now.
00:21:48
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah Yeah. Yeah.
00:21:52
Zak
It's even worse. Greg makes them sit in Northern, which is like our, like, I guess, I guess our busy fan area, right? So Chapel's the, Chapel's supposed to be the family stand. And I still remember you, Greg, telling me that when you got your kid's season ticket, the person on the phone being, are you, are you sure you want to have kids in that area?
00:22:10
Zak
And your exact response then was character building. that Now it's, now they just know how to react properly to...
00:22:13
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah. well My kids have always been too feral to sit in the family end, to be clear. When we had to move to the family end, when the extended family came to watch on Boxing Day, they were stood at the front leading the chance.
00:22:27
Global Sports Podcast Network
So, you know, they unfortunately, is it's fully developed into them. It's just one of those things.
00:22:33
Dan Tanner
Exactly. how How are these kids supposed to learn nowadays if they're not sort of... They have to learn it somehow.
00:22:40
Global Sports Podcast Network
Absolutely, yeah.
00:22:40
Zak
I think you've got to learn losing somewhere.
00:22:40
Dan Tanner
got to learn it somewhere. Yeah.
00:22:42
Zak
And I think being a Saints fan is 100% away.
00:22:43
Dan Tanner
left and
00:22:45
Global Sports Podcast Network
and
00:22:45
Zak
Because also, it's not like they don't have any of the ups.
00:22:47
Zak
We went to Wembley. They got to go to Wembley.
00:22:48
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:22:49
Zak
just going to think it's now every other year.
00:22:54
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yes. One good year, one miserable year. I mean, to be honest, i take that.
00:23:02
Global Sports Podcast Network
This has been a particularly miserable one, though, that's for sure.
00:23:04
Zak
Yeah, I don't think I can handle another season like this, mate. I'm not going lie. like Nine points and, you know, some of the the two wins we got, one of them being a really good win and one of them being a really poor game against Everton where I kind of feel like we won by accident, right?
00:23:18
Zak
Like...
00:23:18
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah
00:23:19
Zak
it But they got again, the the double against Everton is still on.
00:23:20
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yes.
00:23:23
Zak
So...
00:23:23
Global Sports Podcast Network
Still on. There we go.
00:23:25
Zak
There you go. That's our piece of hope. It's not even... just not My piece of hope isn't even beating you guys because I feel like you're going to great time and... Yeah, I look forward to either way. I have a weird soft spot for Palace. I've got a guy that i used to follow on Twitter for a really, really long time that was a Palace fan. and We always used to have back and forth every every time that Saints would play them and until the relegation season, where it was more like, oh, sorry, guys. And now it's, what do you say? It's like, you guys are terrible, aren't you? It's like, yeah, pretty much.
00:23:54
Global Sports Podcast Network
Very much so. But yes. Okay. Well, that is just about all we've got time for today. Dan, thank you very much for joining me. And long may your push for European football continue after your loss on Wednesday, though, let's hope.
00:24:07
Dan Tanner
Yeah, no worries.
00:24:07
Global Sports Podcast Network
That's it.
00:24:09
Dan Tanner
It's been a right laugh, guys. I know you're sort of smiling through the pain.
00:24:10
Zak
it
00:24:13
Dan Tanner
Just kidding. the But it's been a great pleasure, guys.
00:24:14
Global Sports Podcast Network
