Relaunch of Going Coastal Podcast

00:00:04
Speaker
All right. Welcome back to the Going Coastal podcast. First time in a while. Glad to have you back. This is the podcast of the Student and New Professionals chapter of the American Shore and Beach Preservation Association hosted by myself, John Miller, my co-host. Deb Fernandez. And our third co-host who is missing from this promo intro relaunch episode, Marisa Torres.
00:00:30
Speaker
So welcome back. Good to be back. Yeah, welcome, everybody. We're excited.

Impact of Hiatus on ASPN Shows

00:00:37
Speaker
So we've been through a little bit of a little turmoil within the podcasting world. You know, most of you, our listeners may be aware
00:00:49
Speaker
Tyler Buckingham, who is our producer extraordinaire for the first three years of us doing this Going Coastal podcast, decided to take a bit of a hiatus as for the entire ASPN family of shows.
00:01:07
Speaker
It's one of those things where it's a great thing, lots of really good work, but sometimes you just need to take a break, kind of reset the batteries, try to figure out kind of where you want to go next. So way back in December, we were informed that ASPN was going on a hiatus.
00:01:29
Speaker
And yeah, that was kind of the situation that we were left in. So I think the first thing that we want to do is thank Tyler for the three years that he spent with us initiating this podcast, getting us going. It's been, I know for Marissa and I have been there since the beginning, you know, it's been an awesome experience. I don't think either of us are ready to let it go. And we're not going to, which you'll hear more about in a minute.

Podcast Independence and Future Plans

00:01:54
Speaker
Deb as well. Deb, Deb, I think maybe you must have been the one that drove him away. I think that was the thing. Ouch, ouch. No, but it's been an amazing experience. I've been here now for I think a year. I think when you introduced me, it was last April. So yeah, no, I've been loving this experience and it was great having Tyler as our producer and very grateful.
00:02:24
Speaker
So yes, thank you very much to Tyler and the whole ASPN, well team, but really Tyler, for kind of getting us started on this track. So I guess, because the three of us are very passionate about the things that we talk about and trying to introduce students and new professionals to the coastal area that we felt we wanted to continue with this.
00:02:51
Speaker
Again, we're fortunate that speaking with Tyler and the ASPN group that we received their blessing to move forward and to continue to call ourselves going coastal and to continue to do the good work that we've done, albeit by ourselves. So we're navigating that crazy wild path. We have no idea where this is going to go, but, you know, the hosting part is easy. Now we have to try to figure out the whole production side, which is part of the reason that we're doing this episode.
00:03:20
Speaker
Yeah, we've been spending the past four months exploring that producing side, testing different websites, figuring out how are we going to do this. But since, as you said, we're all the three of us very passionate about it, I think we're going to make it work. It's going to be very DIY, but we're going to do this.
00:03:38
Speaker
So we've tested out a bunch of different platforms and I think we're almost ready to relaunch and do a full episode. We wanted to do this to kind of just let everybody know where we've been. Yeah, so that you guys don't forget us. We're still here. We haven't left you.
00:03:54
Speaker
Yeah, exactly. As we move forward, you know, there's a lot of things that are going to be pretty much the same, the same three co hosts, right. So myself, Marissa and Deb will be back and joining you again. And as we move forward, the differences one of us will be producing on a monthly basis, we do intend to
00:04:11
Speaker
continue to do the same sort of set up where we'll release episodes on a monthly basis.

Core Themes of the Podcast

00:04:17
Speaker
You'll be able to get them the same way that you've always been able to get the Going Coastal podcast. We'll be posting links in our social media and on LinkedIn and Twitter and Instagram and all that good stuff. Look for it there. I think we plan to roughly stay with our same three sort of co-themes that we've used throughout Going Coastal, which is
00:04:38
Speaker
our student research spotlights, our professional development topics, and our coastal policy focus. We may sprinkle in some new stuff here and there, but generally speaking, hopefully for you the listener it remains pretty much the same.
00:04:53
Speaker
Exactly. And also, we would love to have some of your feedback about what you like the most, what you want us to talk about. We're all for it. So you can always, as John said, reach out to us on our email or our social pages.
00:05:10
Speaker
Which brings us to an exciting new development. We have our new Going Coastal email, which was set up as a part of this whole production podcasting process. So our new email, for those of you that might be interested in contacting us is podcastgoingcoastalatgmail.com. So you can reach us there. We'll also be putting links at some point and some places to our social media. We haven't figured that out yet.
00:05:38
Speaker
no but it's a work in progress but yeah so that's kind of one of the new and exciting things the podcast going coastal email makes it easier to get in touch with us i think one of the other things that we are going to try to do based off of this new format is to try to get more closer in touch with
00:05:56
Speaker
other student and new professional organizations within

Engagement with New Professionals

00:05:59
Speaker
Coastal. So we've always been the ASBPA Student and New Professional Chapter podcast. We plan to continue to maintain that association and talk about topics of relevance to that group. But certainly as other student and young professional groups become interested, we'd like to talk about some of their topics, especially as we get into professional development activities. We'd love to hear some guest ideas from those groups.
00:06:23
Speaker
So if anybody does have ideas for topics, guest topics, different organizations we can get involved with, things that you want to hear about, just drop us an email at the Gmail. And we'd love to try to incorporate that into what we do. Yes. This is a very collaborative podcast. This is a podcast for you, like students and your professionals. So if you guys want to hear more about something, we're all for it. We're going to take into account what you want to.
00:06:50
Speaker
Yeah, no, it's the reason that we do this is to be useful to the students and new professionals out there. So that's, we definitely wanna hear that feedback. I think one of the things that you probably heard us frequently at the end of the podcast, typically give the advertisement for, actually for advertisements, right? For bringing in sponsorships for the podcast. As we've kind of ventured out now and we're doing this on our own,
00:07:17
Speaker
We've kind of seen some of the benefits of that, so we don't know the details again, but the podcasts, the recording softwares, et cetera, we've come to realize that in order to do it well, you do have to pay a little bit of money. So for now, I think we figured out a way to begin moving forward. But as we kind of get deeper into this, you'll probably hear us advertising for
00:07:39
Speaker
the possibility of sponsorships. Again, don't know whether this is looking at from companies and what form this might take and all that. That's TBD. But I think it's something that we'll look forward to talking more about as we kind of get better understanding.

Relaunch Timeline and Excitement

00:07:59
Speaker
So I guess the more immediate plans are that
00:08:03
Speaker
we are targeting the release of a full episode in May. That'll be the official relaunch. We don't know exactly where we're gonna go with that episode yet, but once we do start moving, we'll be going forward on a monthly basis. So look for those episodes to drop beginning to mid-month, every month from May through the end of the year. And we look forward to reconnecting with our audience and
00:08:32
Speaker
learning more about what you guys want to hear. Yeah, we've been missing you guys. And what do you want to hear more about John on our podcast? Wow. Put me on the spot. I didn't know I was going to get asked a question. I love hearing more about the students and the student research that's happening. That's always been my favorite.
00:08:52
Speaker
So we'll definitely be, we've both been at conferences and at different events over the past couple months. So I think we'll be reaching out to hear more about the research that's going on. I think we may want to get some update. We were both just at the Coastal Summit, the ASVPA Coastal Summit in DC. A lot of interesting things came out of that. So there's a lot to discuss maybe about the Coastal Summit.
00:09:15
Speaker
And then preparing, it's not long before we get into actually conferences and things like that. So again, all good topics, I think, moving forward.
00:09:24
Speaker
What about you now, Deb? What are you looking forward to? I agree with everything you said. And I love hearing about new conferences, too. Because I think this podcast is also about letting us know that there are a lot of different conferences that we can go to as students. And also, I really like the student research spotlight. I think it's so interesting to hear about all the different research projects that students have. And what are they going through? How are they doing it? And yeah.
00:09:53
Speaker
I'm excited to hear more about our students. I think for now, we're going to sign off for this prequel. Welcome back, sort of test out podcast intro episode. And we'll look forward to recording more, hopefully in less than a month's time. Yes. Thank you guys for connecting back with us. And we hope to hear from you soon. See you.
