The Amazing Rewatch: Taking care of your dog. Dog a treat and stuff like that. so Well, we have six remaining teams. Rachel and Dave are first to depart, so we're leaving. azure by john or we're in azure by john at the end of Episode six.
The Amazing Rewatch: ah Rachel and Dave depart at 9 .15 p .m. and it says find the gateway of Africa's wildlife heritage in Kilimanjaro, Tanzania. Then Art and JJ depart at 1045, Bopper and Mark at 1055, Rachel and Brendan at 1056.
The Amazing Rewatch: Nary and Jamie at 11 .32 and Vanessa and Ralph at 11 .35.
The Amazing Rewatch: So we start off this episode with something that has been annoying us since the beginning of the season and it drives me freaking crazy when Art and JJ say that People are just following them. Yeah.
The Amazing Rewatch: That Brendan and Rachel just... So they're going to try and... Get anything that we get. So they go to a... A travel agency. Yeah. And they the first one's in there to... I like at the tickets.
The Amazing Rewatch: And. They're sitting there like. See Brennan and Rachel pull up. They're just going to try and get anything we get. Well, yeah. Of course they are. Because you're trying to get the first flights. To Tanzania. And so are they. Yeah.
The Amazing Rewatch: They're not going to walk in and be like, did they already get that flight? Oh, we don't want to follow them. We should probably take the next one. I know. It's so ridiculous. annoying and they said that the whole time and Unless ah they're editing it editing it to be...
The Amazing Rewatch: something completely different. There hasn't been a time where they've been like, where are you guys going? We're just going to follow you. Or like blatantly being like. right on their tails and just following them. They're just going the same place they're going because that is the next place to go.
The Amazing Rewatch: Yes. It is so annoying. It drives me crazy. i Hate that. Yes. Um. but We also find out just kind of a side note that. Jamie apparently had a training accident where her gun went off and shattered her femur. Yeah. That's intense. yeah That's ah awful. Yeah.
The Amazing Rewatch: So. We don't really hear anything else about that. this whole episode, but. I just wanted to point that out because holy cow. that's awful and Yeah.
The Amazing Rewatch: So, speaking of Nary and Jamie, though, when they're at this travel agency, all the other teams are there except for... Vanessa and Ralph and Mary and Jamie. And, um, somebody says the teachers are behind us.
The Amazing Rewatch: And Art and JJ are like, they're not teachers. And Rachel's like, oh, what do you mean? what What makes you say that? And they're like, they're cops. She's like, yeah oh, why do you think that? and Apparently, like... Art and JJ.
The Amazing Rewatch: Talked about some sort of like. undercover mission or something. And Nary and Jamie knew. what they were talking about and like asked about. something like use the specific wording yeah and they're like kindergarten teachers don't know what that means yeah So...
The Amazing Rewatch: They kind of just like... plant this seed. And then. um they They leave and then Nary and Jamie come in and Brendan's like, aren't JJ says you guys are cops? And they're like, oh. ha Yes.
The Amazing Rewatch: Why would he say that? Yeah, and Um, So they kind of just... don't really dig into it but they're like even if they are cups they're way nicer than art and jj so yeah it doesn't even matter like what they are yeah And i don't I honestly don't think that, like, Art and JJ are mean. They're just, like... sarcastic and annoying.
The Amazing Rewatch: They're... They just think they're so much better than everyone. Yeah. So much better than everyone and that everybody's just like. They're just always like, I can't believe they're even in this race. And they just act like they are perfect. Yeah, especially about Brennan and Rachel. Everybody's kind of...
The Amazing Rewatch: ganging up on them and we'll get into that a little bit more too but so Rachel, as she walks out. Says to Vanessa, oh, I really wish there was something faster than the 10 a .m. flight. And Vanessa's like, yeah, yeah, I don't believe you. And she's like, no, really. It's 10 a .m. We couldn't find anything faster.
The Amazing Rewatch: And she walks out and Vanessa's like, that was like she was like in a bad acting class. Yeah. She's like, I wasn't going to believe that. yeah But that's not like being mean to a teen. That's just playing around and being like playing the game. Yeah.
The Amazing Rewatch: And. So they get... They're all on the same flight to Tanzania. They have a layover in Nairobi. Yeah. So they're like at... like in line for customs and stuff and then this there's a whole thing that goes on here So they all land in they're at their layover and they're like running through the airport and it's pretty crowded.
The Amazing Rewatch: And. Brendan. rushes past. um Ralph. And Ralph's like... hey watch it and brendan like turns around and flips him off apparently we don't see it on the video but that's what they say And Ralph's like, mind where you put that finger, buddy. And.
The Amazing Rewatch: Brendan's like, I'm here to play, baby. And then JJ is like. You're not playing, you're just following. And he's like. inserting himself into this fight. Which comes up.
The Amazing Rewatch: which is funny later yeah yeah and then Um. So Ralph's not really like fighting. Ralph's not really getting involved. But then like Vanessa says something mean to Rachel and then Rachel and Vanessa start fighting. Yeah, because Vanessa says that Rachel also bumped into her.
The Amazing Rewatch: And then Rachel's like, let's just like calm down. And Vanessa, it's just like escalating. And well, first, yeah. So Rachel. Vanessa says Rachel shoved her. yeah And Rachel's like.
The Amazing Rewatch: No, I didn't. And Vanessa's like, well, I'm... way smaller than you and I take up way less space.
The Amazing Rewatch: ah And you just barged into me. And she's like. What? And then she's like, just put on more sparkles. I'm like. That is so lame. Like that was the dumbest. comeback ever yeah And Rachel says, Aren't you like 38?
The Amazing Rewatch: like saying like you why are you acting so immature basically and Vanessa's like yeah I am and somehow I still like younger than you you should get your nose done before you get your boobs done and Rachel will do everybody a favor her face when it like went to the commercial break her mouth was just like agape like I cannot believe you just said that to me. yeah And Ralph's like trying to get Vanessa to stop fighting. Yeah. And.
The Amazing Rewatch: Um, It's just... So it was mostly like... And these poor, like, customs agents that are like... in the middle of all of this too because they're like trying to check their passports and everything and they're all at the desks and they're still arguing with each other And.
The Amazing Rewatch: So it all started with like... brendan bumping ralph but brendan and ralph are not even fighting yeah jj's like one thing and putting himself into the fight and vanessa is like saying really mean things. yeah And Rachel... She said like, aren't you like 38? Like, why are you being so immature?
The Amazing Rewatch: But she wouldn't even she didn't even say anything like mean to Vanessa. Vanessa was just mean. And she was mean like on episode two or something. Yeah, she just is saying. not nice things and we're also trying to get her to stop and so rachel is like at the desk and she's like crying and she's like she called me fat and ugly and but She said I was bigger than her. And Brendan's like, okay, just stop. And like Art and JJ are at the next counter over. And they're like.
The Amazing Rewatch: Yeah. Just like over there guffawing. And when... They were in line and Brandon and Rachel like walked up because they were the next ones for custom. JJ says.
The Amazing Rewatch: I'm surprised I couldn't even find where to go. oh my gosh like that is so annoying he says the fact that they're even in the same race as us is disgusting disgusting yeah like he's so dramatic about it and so and it's not even like that's not even what the fight is about you're just inserting yourself you're just trying to be dramatic so then he wants to continue the drama and he walks after they get through customs he walks up to nary and jamie yes and they're like Tell us where you really work.
The Amazing Rewatch: Yeah. What do you really do? they're like what do you mean and they're like we know you're not teachers And they're like. why is it any of your business like they're like why are you asking we just want to know in case we know the same people yeah they're like well we're teachers so They're like, okay, like if you want to stick with that. Yeah. I also think it's dumb that they're trying to lie about it. Right.
The Amazing Rewatch: Like, why? It doesn't even matter. Because Art and JJ have been... straightforward about what they do this whole time and nobody has said like Oh, they're... They're border patrol agents. They're going to be front runners. Yeah. And Gary and Jamie have been in the back of the pack the whole time. Right. So it has not helped them.
The Amazing Rewatch: Right. So... They just like walk away and like are laughing about it. anyways anyway yeah so much happening and we're not even we're not we're on the layover right now in the country yeah so they do land in tanzania and they run out and get the taxis, and their clue says to go to the Arusha Airport and sign up for one of three charters. to fly to the No room.
The Amazing Rewatch: Ingarongaro. Ingarongaro Crater. Yeah. Ngoro, ngoro. I can't say it. So they race to the... Ngoro, ngoro. That's it. Ngoro, ngoro. Ngoro, ngoro.
The Amazing Rewatch: They race to this. airport and The first flight... Departs at 9 .30 and the people who sign up for this one are Art and JJ and Brendan and Rachel. Yeah. 9 .45 are Bopper and Mark and Rachel and Dave. And 10 o 'clock are Nary and Jamie and Ralph and Vanessa.
The Amazing Rewatch: So when the first light lands, the clue says to choose a safari safari vehicle and a driver and navigate to... the crater and find a The Maasai warrior. And they have to like direct their driver. So they kind of have to like ask. Locals for directions because their driver can't tell them where to go.
The Amazing Rewatch: um But the first two teams arrive and it's a detour. The choices are marksmanship or courtship. So both of them require to take... ride a bike down to this village.
The Amazing Rewatch: And then for marksmanship they have to master the use of a Maasai weapon known as the Rungu. Rungu and hit a clay target. And in courtship, they join a group of Maasai warriors in a jumping dance known as the Adumu, and they have to jump for one minute.
The Amazing Rewatch: So I would choose Courtship. What the heck? Why would anybody choose anything else? Unless it's not specific in the and like. in the choices that it's only one minute, why would anybody choose anything else? Right. It's like, I can do anything for one minute. Right.
The Amazing Rewatch: it's crazy It must not be clear. Yeah, I don't know what it is, but. It must, yeah, because one minute, it's like one minute. yeah That's it. Like, and it would be hard because they have to jump high. One minute.
The Amazing Rewatch: would probably feel like five when you're doing that. But also it looks fun. Like the people that end up doing it, it's like their adrenaline kicks in and they're having like a great experience and it's really cool.
The Amazing Rewatch: Um, Speaking of experience, those charter flights they take over the volcano and the crater and the safari area. like that looked like an amazing experience too like this area is so... beautiful and has so much
The Amazing Rewatch: like so many animals and stuff and just yeah look amazing so the Maasai so Maasai Mara is like a specifically a national park in Kenya and like the Maasai people I thought only lived in Kenya but Apparently they also live in Tanzania.
The Amazing Rewatch: um I don't know. This is our third time to Tanzania. We've been there in season five. Eleven. and 20. And...
The Amazing Rewatch: tanzania is one of those countries where geography human history wildlife and culture all collide in a pretty spectacular way it contains africa's highest number of Oh. it contains africa Africa's highest mountain.
The Amazing Rewatch: the Serengeti, Zanzibar, and some of the world's most important sites for Understanding Early Human Evolution It's known as the United Republic of Tanzania. The capital is Dodoma.
The Amazing Rewatch: The largest city is Dar es Salaam. It has about 70 million people. um It's roughly four times the size of Utah. there That's what it specifically says. Yeah.
The Amazing Rewatch: Like Wikipedia? No, just this ah this AI thing. That's like off to the side. Oh okay. They speak Swahili. That's the major language. English is also widely used.
The Amazing Rewatch: In government, education, and business. um The currency is the Tanzanian shilling. um It's in East Africa. It's bordered by Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi.
The Amazing Rewatch: the Democratic Republic of Congo, Zambia, Malawi, Mozambique. And the Indian Ocean. um One unusual thing about Tanzania is that it is...
The Amazing Rewatch: effectively the union of two historically distinct places the mainland and the islands of Zanzibar. Yeah. And Zanzibar is where Freddie Mercury is from.
The Amazing Rewatch: Yeah. I think we talked about that probably in season 11. Yeah, because we went to Zanzibar specifically yeah in season 11. um Humans have lived in this region for an extraordinary extraordinarily long time.
The Amazing Rewatch: um It's one of the the world's most... important paleoanthropological, that's a long word, paleoanthropological sites. The fossils and stone tools found in this region have helped scientists reconstruct millions of years of human evolution.
The Amazing Rewatch: Um,
The Amazing Rewatch: So Just a very long history. Um... A big trading. a Merchant area. because of the Indian Ocean location.
The Amazing Rewatch: And then there was European colon colonization in the 1800s. Germany colonized much of Tanzania as German East Africa. um Then they gained independence in 1961. Zanzibar became independent in 1963.
The Amazing Rewatch: but underwent the Zanzibar Revolution in 1964, which overthrew his sultan. and then it united with Tanzania in 1964. and
The Amazing Rewatch: It's one of the world's most famous and major wildlife destinations. It contains seven UNESCO World Heritage properties, including the Serengeti National Park. Mm. How do you say that?
The Amazing Rewatch: Ngorongoro. Ngorongoro Conservation Area, Kilimanjaro National Park, Salus Game Reserve, Stonetown of Zanzibar, Kilwa... Kiswani.
The Amazing Rewatch: and the condor Rock Art Sites. The Serengeti is famous for the Great Migration. which um Enormous herds of wildebeest, zebras, and other grazing animals move through the Serengeti ecosystem.
The Amazing Rewatch: Um... and And... Kilimanjaro is extraordinary because it's part of a huge mountain chain. Oh, it isn't part of a huge mountain chain like the Rockiers of the Himalayas. I was going to say it is. I thought it was just kind of like a single mountain. Yeah, it's essentially one enormous volcano.
The Amazing Rewatch: rising out of East African plains. And... It's the highest mountain in Africa. One of the famous seven summits Um...

The Amazing Rewatch: In my... Amateur hiking abilities. I could maybe even do that one. Because it looks like it's pretty. Yeah. Like it's not very steep. Yeah, and I think it's like the only one of the summits of the continents that doesn't require like...
The Amazing Rewatch: Hi. climbing gear. Like you can get there without like scaling things. Yeah. It's like. gradual and i'm not saying i want to but i'm saying i want to probably could on my like life goals to do that It has been for a long time.
The Amazing Rewatch: Um...
The Amazing Rewatch: Oh. Is Kilimanjaro... difficult to climb. Interesting, not especially. You don't generally need technical mountaining mountaineering skills, ropes, or rock climbing. gear um that's why thousands of ordinary hikers attempt it but that doesn't mean it's easy the biggest challenge is altitude at nearly 19 000 feet oxygen availability is dramatically lower than at sea level Climbers usually spend several days gradually ascending so their bodies can acclimatize.
The Amazing Rewatch: Summit day often involves being beginning the climb in the middle of the night, reaching the crater rim around sunrise and continuing around. um continuing toward the peak.
The Amazing Rewatch: Um,
The Amazing Rewatch: Tanzania is home to Lake Victoria, Africa's largest lake. So did we not go there in season one? Where's Victoria Falls? I think that is in South. Africa.
The Amazing Rewatch: Yeah.
The Amazing Rewatch: I think it's in South Africa. or Botswana because we went to those two places. Okay. um The country has more than 120 ethnic groups. And it's...

The Amazing Rewatch: We did South Africa and Zambia. Oh, okay. It might it probably like is like a border. Yeah. Okay. Anyway. Um...
The Amazing Rewatch: Perhaps the wildest geographical contrast is that you can go from the Indian Ocean beaches and coral architecture of Zanzibar to the Serengeti Savannah to the rainforest of Kilimanjaro and finally to the great glaciers nearly 20 ,000 feet above sea level all within the same country.
The Amazing Rewatch: Yeah, Tanzania has definitely been on my list. It has, I mean... I've always wanted to do like a safari, but... Tanzania just seems like... it has everything yeah I would want to do it would have to be like a really long trip because I i want to climb Mount Kilimanjaro But it takes like...
The Amazing Rewatch: week. Yeah. But then you also want to do all the other stuff too. So yeah but like go to Zanzibar and do Serengeti. Yeah. Like. You and need like a month. Yeah.
The Amazing Rewatch: Yeah. I remember when we went to um Disney World and we were kind of just like. You guys went with me to some of the different. ah hotels. Because I was doing like site inspections kind of. And. we went to like the animal kingdom lodge and there was a guy in the lobby, like showing.
The Amazing Rewatch: Do you remember this? Like he had like that poster of Africa. and was just like talking about and he was from tanzania and he was like It's the best place to go in Africa. And I was like. Well I'm sold. Yeah.
The Amazing Rewatch: It seems... Amazing. I would love to go there. Probably expensive and long. um Yeah. Like the safaris are not cheap.
The Amazing Rewatch: Yeah. But like actually Zanzibar didn't seem that. expensive. The flight's long and expensive. yeah So. overall yes but once you get there some places are not that bad
The Amazing Rewatch: Um. Yeah. It looks amazing. So. All those flights start landing. no We're already at the detour. What?
The Amazing Rewatch: Oh yeah, they had to ride the bike. We already said that. They had to ride the bike down the hill. You're way behind. They'd ride the bike down the hill. um Art and JJ chose marksmanship and Brendan and Rachel chore chose. courtship.
The Amazing Rewatch: Yes. And. get it done really quickly because it's only one minute. Yeah. And the clue says, drive along drive along the western rim and search for Simba. a campsite.
The Amazing Rewatch: You must direct your driver there. um JJ hits the target first. Because he's in a semi -pro law enforcement football team. Yeah, and he's like the quarterback. What even is that? Yeah.
The Amazing Rewatch: And. Art eventually. um Hits it. um Then the next couple teams arrive, so... Bopper and Mark are starting to ride their bike and Brendan and Rachel are driving away and he yells out the window, Bopper, do courtship.
The Amazing Rewatch: Yeah. And. um Rachel and Dave do marksmanship. And again, Bob and Mark do courtship. And it was very quick. And Brendan and Rachel kind of struggle with the throwing thing.
The Amazing Rewatch: um But... they eventually get it Dave and Rachel. Yeah what did I say? Brendan. and Oh, yeah. Yeah, because... Rachel's like trying to sidearm throw it.
The Amazing Rewatch: Which honestly seems easier for that type of thing. And Dave's like, overhand, overhand. She's like, stop coaching. Yeah. the Ahem. These two I can't.
The Amazing Rewatch: Decide.
The Amazing Rewatch: Like... I feel like Dave is kind of like... bossy and controlling. But Rachel also... like goads him yeah like purposefully gets under his skin like oh we're gonna do this now okay yeah you know Yeah they fight. In an interesting way. Yeah.
The Amazing Rewatch: Um, Mary and Jamie and Ralph and Vanessa, they both choose marksmanship and they start riding their bikes down. Vanessa cannot ride this bike. So they're all like the same size and they're all too tall for her.
The Amazing Rewatch: Yeah, and she cannot Figure it out. I think she's scared because like. Once she gets on the bike. She doesn't actually ever get on the bike, though. Yeah, but once she gets on the bike, like she's going to be like...
The Amazing Rewatch: stuck up high on this bike and like oh yeah i feel like you're saying fall a long way so she kind of like Tries to get up and then falls over. falls over she hurts her hand and starts bleeding and face blants into a Like a...
The Amazing Rewatch: Little. What's the word I'm looking for? Like a ditch thing? Yeah. Yeah. So she ends up just like walking it. most of the way yeah Um,
The Amazing Rewatch: And so they have to so ride they have to ride the bike down, but then they also have to ride the bike. up and that looks hard. Going back up. And...
The Amazing Rewatch: Yeah, when Vanessa and Ralph finish the... detour they Just walk it. yeah And. ralph is like we're gonna lose we're gonna be last he says we're done so you might as well enjoy it Yeah.
The Amazing Rewatch: And look around and she's like... He's like, I'm not mad at you I just hate losing. And when she was trying to get on the bike, she was like yelling at him so much. And he wasn't even like. Yeah. Being rude. He was like. Try and get up on higher ground to get on your bike and or something like that. Yeah, yeah' and you're trying to get on the the slope end of the hill or something, you know. And she was, like, yelling at him so much.
The Amazing Rewatch: Um, So teams are... directing their drivers to this campsite. And Art and JJ and Brendan and Rachel got... in correct directions or something. But Brendan and Rachel got turned around by Art and JJ were still going in the wrong wrong direction. Yeah. Well, Art and JJ were complaining that they were following them again and they're going the wrong way.
The Amazing Rewatch: Right. But they both got the same directions. But Rachel and Brendan are the ones that figured it out first that they were going the wrong way. yeah So maybe you should follow them. And um that means Dave and Rachel are first ones to get to this next.
The Amazing Rewatch: place. this campsite and the clue there says set up camp for the night Unload materials from the trucks, construct an elaborate tent with a working shower.
The Amazing Rewatch: and when you're done race to the nearby pit stop to check in for this leg of the race. The last team to check in may be eliminated. So they're these big. Wall tents like canvas heavy tents with metal um like Like a frame. Frame and...
The Amazing Rewatch: All these like beds and chairs and blankets and towels that have to be done correctly and a shower. I feel like they wanted to do this as a roadblock, but they're like, one person can't possibly do that. So we just have to do.
The Amazing Rewatch: Because they this wasn't there wasn't a roadblock this late. Yeah. So... They get started on that. um This would have been a good one.
The Amazing Rewatch: For like a... What's the... What's the... The Crossroads? Uh... Intersection. Oh, you have to like help another team? Or to help.
The Amazing Rewatch: You have to like team up with another team. Yeah. Yeah, but nobody's really working together very well right now. Yeah, who arrives? Nary and Jamie arrive last, and they're like...
The Amazing Rewatch: We got there last, but... Everybody was fighting. No, Vanessa and Ralph did. Oh, that's right. Yeah, they arrived last and they're like... They pretty much thought they were out because they had to walk their bike. That's right.
The Amazing Rewatch: And they were like. And everybody everybody is fighting. So if we can just like get this together, get it together and like work well together, then. yes we might have a chance And in this little section...
The Amazing Rewatch: It feels like there's a lot of like. Disparaging comments about women. from From all of them. like Oh. Well, at one point, JJ is inside, like, making the beds and folding towels. I feel like I'm the woman the woman of the relationship.
The Amazing Rewatch: And then. Nary and Jamie. They kind of get pretty far behind everybody pretty quickly. Yeah. And they say it's because they didn't have a man on their team. Everybody else has a man. they didn't have like the height maybe necessarily but yeah Yeah. I mean...
The Amazing Rewatch: Yeah. Ralph, obviously, like he's a big... muscle guy. Like he is strong. But like, I don't feel like anybody else really is. All the other males are like.
The Amazing Rewatch: Obviously stronger, you know.
The Amazing Rewatch: So... um It does seem like it takes a long time. There's a lot that goes into it. They're really heavy. There's a lot of details inside and outside the camp. And a lot of the pieces of the frame look similar. And so they get put in.
The Amazing Rewatch: the wrong places like rachel and dave have to take theirs completely apart at one point. But then once they figure out and they get this the frame in the right. Uh...
The Amazing Rewatch: position then they like get it done pretty quickly. yeah Mark and Bopper seem to finish first, but the one... When they tried to pass it off, they didn't have water in their showerhead was the only thing. So Rachel and Dave actually finished. first and The pit stop's not far away because they check in as team number one.
The Amazing Rewatch: And they went on a trip to Costa Rica. This is their fourth first place win. Yes. Then Mark and Bopper are... Team number two. And so they are making their way up. Yeah.
The Amazing Rewatch: and the They did pretty good on this leg. Yeah. I think when they arrived at the tents. Mark was like. Just listen to me and we'll get it done fast. He's like good at building stuff, I guess. And they did. Yeah, they did.
The Amazing Rewatch: ah They, yeah, they work together pretty good. Um, Yeah, when they don't have to navigate themselves, like they did have to. And they did go off. They did go the wrong way a little bit on this episode because they did have to. direct their driver but when they're not like navigating a city Yeah, they're pretty good at the tasks. And they get to a task because they get it done, yeah.
The Amazing Rewatch: They're like the cowboys. Yeah. Yeah. Um, Nary and JJ said, nary and jj nary and jamie said they hadn't slept in three days and they're tired hungry didn't have water Yeah.
The Amazing Rewatch: Yeah. And they're struggling. so Except for Nary was asleep with her eyes open on that charter plane. Yeah. That was kind of funny. She missed a lot. It'd be crazy.
