The Amazing Rewatch: And we were in. Germany in Bavaria. And we said goodbye to Carrie and Stacey. Mm -hmm. So the first team to depart today are Art and JJ at 8 .48 a .m. And it says fly to the land of... Fire.

The Amazing Rewatch: And. yeah i'm very surprised we're going here our first time going to Azerbaijan. ah Not a place to really hear about. No. Why don't you just tell us about Right it on the top of the episode. Okay. So...
The Amazing Rewatch: It is...
The Amazing Rewatch: Um, located between Europe, Central Asia, Russia, Iran, and Turkey. um Its history involves Persian empires.
The Amazing Rewatch: Turkish, Russian, Soviet Union. Has a lot of oil and... a long conflict with from Armenia. It's officially named the Republic of Azerbaijan. The capital is Baku.
The Amazing Rewatch: B -A -K -U. Has about 10 .4 million people. um It has... They speak. azerbaijani closely related to Turkish, and the currency is the Azerbaijani manat, M -A -N -A -T.
The Amazing Rewatch: um It's predominantly Muslim. With a Shia Islam historically the largest... traditional Religion. Um...
The Amazing Rewatch: And then... Yes, major resources are... oil and natural gas. It's a presidential republic. It's on the western shore of the Caspian Sea with Russia to the north, Georgia to the northwest, Armenia to the west, and Iran to the south.

The Amazing Rewatch: It. Um... has been inhabited for thousands of years and historically sat along important trade routes connecting the Middle East, Central Asia, and Europe. Um,
The Amazing Rewatch: um and Christianity spread through this area around the 4th century AD. After Arab conquests. Beginning in the 7th century, Islam... became the dominant religion.
The Amazing Rewatch: um During the early 1800s, the Russian Empire expanded southward into the Caucasus, which is like this area. Um, after the wars between Russia and Iran.
The Amazing Rewatch: much of what is now Azerbaijan became part of the Russian Empire. And. Um,
The Amazing Rewatch: This produced an interesting historical division that still exists today. Millions of ethnic Azerbaijanis live in northern Iran. while the independent Republic of Azerbaijan lies north of the Iranian border.
The Amazing Rewatch: um like we said is closely connected to oil by the late 1800s and early 1900s became one of the world's most ah major oil producing centers. um It was.
The Amazing Rewatch: transformed Baku into a wealthy cosmopolitan industrial city. And in norm ah oil remains enormously important to Azerbaijan today. The World Bank describes the country as historically reliant on hydrocarbons for economic growth, although the government has been trying to diversify the economy.
The Amazing Rewatch: Um... It's called The Land of Fire. Because of the enormous oil... and natural gas deposits. In some places, natural gas has historically seeped through the cracks of the earth and burned spontaneously.

The Amazing Rewatch: Caspian Sea. It's not a lake. It's a sea. The Caspian city the caspian Sea is not a sea. It's landlocked, so it is a lake. Maybe that's what it is like interesting about it. The sea can't be landlocked?
The Amazing Rewatch: A C is like... Just like. Part of an ocean, basically. Hmm. Caspian Sea is the world's largest inland body of water, also described as the world's largest lake.
The Amazing Rewatch: Hmm. and referred to as a full -fledged C.
The Amazing Rewatch: Okay. Yeah. Yes. Um, baku the capital baku lies below sea level making one of the world's lowest lying national capitals Um.
The Amazing Rewatch: azurebaian Azure Azure Bajon hosted the Eurovision Song Contest in 2012. After winning the year before. It's not even in Europe, though. Yeah.
The Amazing Rewatch: Um, ah Formula One races through this area sometimes. um The country's flag is blue, red, and green with a white crescent and eight point and so and an eight -pointed star.
The Amazing Rewatch: And but despite it relatively despite its relatively small geographic size, Azerbaijan has a population of about 10 .5 million. Making it. more populous than other neighboring countries like Armenia and Georgia.
The Amazing Rewatch: It's known as like a crossroads of civilization. Um, Yeah. Lots of stuff happened here in history. Lots of... stuff happening. and That was a part of the Soviet Union. and I don't know if you probably said that. Mm -hmm
The Amazing Rewatch: i yeah i've looked that up once like all of the countries that were former soviet republics. There's a lot. Yeah. no Speaking of Grandma Betty and like she she taught us.
The Amazing Rewatch: geography like she really wanted wanted us to learn about geography, world geography, and she had atlases all over the place and I loved them. But like some of her atlases were so old that it was like. USSR. And not Russia. so i And like East and West Germany were.
The Amazing Rewatch: separated Yeah. They were two different countries at that time. or Yeah, basically. So it's kind of funny to think about that. Yeah. okay Yeah, this is our 80th country we visited. It's our fifth country in this season.
The Amazing Rewatch: First time we've... Been here.
The Amazing Rewatch: So other teams start departing. Joey and Danny. So we said Art and JJ at 8 .48 a .m. Joey and Danny at 9 .17. Vanessa and Ralph 9 .19. Rachel and Dave, 1057. Brendan and Rachel, 1117.
The Amazing Rewatch: Bopper and Mark 1141 and Nary and Jamie 1142.
The Amazing Rewatch: And that timing is very weird because... it made the At the end of the last episode, it made it look like Nary and Jamie just barely beat. stacy and carrie but they were like just barely behind bopper and mark Yeah.
The Amazing Rewatch: I thought the same thing. Bobber and Mark also think they're going to Africa. Yeah. Like Azerbaijan. That sounds like Africa. Yeah. Brendan and Rachel go to a travel agent first. They're the only ones.
The Amazing Rewatch: Everybody else goes to the airport, but they all end up on the same. fight. Yeah. Departs at 6 .20 p .m., arrives at like 4 .00. 10 the next morning. um So.
The Amazing Rewatch: Yeah, they all land and they get... They land at the airport, get in taxis, they're heading to the Temple of Fire. And when they get there, there's... Some people there are doing some dancing and music and stuff like that. But the door to this temple says it opens at sunrise. So they all kind of just have to hang out and wait.
The Amazing Rewatch: Yeah, sure. joining in in the festivities and the dancing and stuff. It looks kind of fun. When the sun rises and the door opens, the teams all will go in and get a clue. and uh come back out and the first clue that they see when they open it is a fast forward And it says, make your way to this hay market and unload 150 bales of hay. You must stack them.
The Amazing Rewatch: 10... ten by three let's say ten long three wide and five high So Rachel and Dave say they want to give it a try, but so do Joey and Danny.
The Amazing Rewatch: Art and JJ are not allowed because they've already done a fast forward and all the other teams don't want to give it a try. Yeah.
The Amazing Rewatch: um but the So the regular clue inside the envelope says to go to the Occupational Training International to find your next clue. And so Joey and Danny and Rachel and Dave. Go to this. place and they have to like climb up on a big truck full of hay and so like dave climbs up there and he just like starts throwing hay down and i think Joey is up at the top throwing hay down. and the person at the bottom is stacking. Mm -hmm.
The Amazing Rewatch: And at first, Joey and Danny's... pile. It's like... Not straight. And he's like, I don't. I don't read the instruction manual And he was just like. I'm like, okay, well, but then a little bit later, it does seem like he does actually know that they have to have a certain number and wide and high.
The Amazing Rewatch: Um. And then... We go back to the other teams. Mark. Poor Mark. yeah
The Amazing Rewatch: Apparently he gets motion sickness pretty easy because yeah we see him puking a lot in this episode and that's not the first time in this season. Yeah, he's always the driver and Whopper's always in the back. So when they're in taxis. and he has to sit in the back seat he does not do well so he's like throwing up but he did say this is better than us trying to navigate i'll tell you that yeah that's true i'd rather be throwing up than trying to drive when I don't have to.
The Amazing Rewatch: In a foreign country. yeah So they arrive at this occupational training international. ah but Mark and Bobber find the clue first and it's a roadblock and it says what goes down must come up.
The Amazing Rewatch: So they have to do a... terrifying helicopter ditch rescue exercise. By getting strapped into a helicopter mock -up, get submerged under the water and capsized, then escape from the crash simulation. Once they surface, they swim to a buoy with...
The Amazing Rewatch: Holding the next clue. And neither of us would like this. No. This would be because you have to hold your breath. Yeah. and it's water and we are not good swimmers and we don't like being underwater they do have like the goggles that plug their nose which is great but i tried to hold my breath.
The Amazing Rewatch: but I always do this. Do you do this when like. movies or tv shows when somebody's underwater do you try to hold your breath as long as they do Yeah, sometimes, but I think it wouldn't be like the way they edit this. I don't think it's like yeah from beginning to end. I think they do it a little bit longer, actually, because they said it's only like 10 seconds. yeah So I was holding my breath and I was like, we're getting close to 30 seconds here. And I would probably start panicking if I was yeah underwater. But they said that like when you flip upside down, it's like really disorienting.
The Amazing Rewatch: And you have to like push the window out. Yeah. That would be the worst part. JJ said that he did freak out a little bit and just followed some water. Yeah. Yeah, so Bopper.
The Amazing Rewatch: um JJ and... Jamie. Jamie are all doing at the same time. They're like in the same. Yeah. And then...
The Amazing Rewatch: Brendan. does it a little bit later and Vanessa does it right after him. And... So. Back to the fast forward. They're like...
The Amazing Rewatch: Pretty neck and neck. Um, But Dave and Rachel do finish first. Yeah. And. So, and Joey and Danny are like surprised. Yeah, if we got beat by a freaking girl.
The Amazing Rewatch: At least they tried and we don't have a lot of fast forwards where it's an actual competition. Usually one team chooses it really. Yeah. and Or yeah, they go and it's gone. So this one, because I probably took them a long time. So that one was a... Real big risk. to go and stay.
The Amazing Rewatch: For that long. yeah And not be. guaranteed. So. um Dave and Rachel are... Team number one. And they each win a car. 2013 Ford Taurus. Yeah.
The Amazing Rewatch: And what's the pit stop? I didn't write it down. Well, they don't really tell you until the other teams get their pit stop quick. Okay. So... Um... When the teams finish their simulation, they get a clue that says to go to the old town Baku and find the Togrul Karabakh. carpet shop to find your next clue.
The Amazing Rewatch: So the first four teams arrive all about the same time. Brennan and Rachel made up a really good time getting there. Yeah, because because he wasn't on that very first simulation with everybody else. yeah And the clue at that. Carpet Shop is... Apple or oil?
The Amazing Rewatch: yeahp A detour. So for apples, they have to search an old Soviet car filled with apples to find one that's marked with a race flag. And in oil, they...
The Amazing Rewatch: make their way to the Naftalon Health Center, and clean up a client using a metal shoehorn. and scrape black crude oil off the bather's body and remove any excess oil using water and sponges. So.
The Amazing Rewatch: Oil just is like... So plentiful here that they use it. in spa treatments, which is crazy. I think I would choose the... Oil because...
The Amazing Rewatch: The other one's like a needle in a haystack and the other the oil one doesn't seem that hard. When I initially, like... saw these clues, I was like, oil is...
The Amazing Rewatch: sticky and hard to get off sometimes, but this oil didn't seem... like that yeah it seems like thin and runny. Yeah. So... um but yeah brandon and rachel mark and bopper art and jj they all choose oil nary and jamie choose apples And then Joey and Danny get to the roadblock and Joey's going to do it.
The Amazing Rewatch: ah Vanessa and Ralph go to the carpet shop. And they are like looking through the rugs and under the rugs and around the shelves and yeah all these things. And the clues are very obvious.
The Amazing Rewatch: Like right there. Like right in front of their faces. It's weird that they didn't see them. It's like they didn't even look up. Yeah. So they pick it up. Like they finally see it and she's like, we are buffoons. Yeah.
The Amazing Rewatch: and they choose apples. which I was kind of surprised after their watermelon detour. yeah So... um wait hold on yet um nary and jamie are looking they to they're at the detour the apple one and the apples are all in like this old car it's an old car the trunk and the whole inside front are filled with apples And.
The Amazing Rewatch: So you have they have boxes that they can take the apples out of the car and put into the boxes. as they're searching so and art and jj bopper mark and brennan and rachel are at the oil detour Um,
The Amazing Rewatch: And... Third. Just kind of having fun with it. Some of them are ticklish that like the guys that are getting cleaned off are ticklish and they have to like clean his armpits. Really hairy.
The Amazing Rewatch: pfft um art and jj end up finishing first and the clue says make your way to the esplanade esca estaconda For the. pit stop for this regular race the last team to check in may be eliminated And Bopper and Mark and Brennan and Rachel are not too far behind them.
The Amazing Rewatch: And Art and JJ are team number... two. Mark and Bob are team number three and Brendan and Rachel are team number four. Mm hmm.
The Amazing Rewatch: so oh joey and danny had got to the Other. Yeah, they finished their rock and went to the carpet shop. yeah Got the clue. They chose apples. They chose apple.
The Amazing Rewatch: Which... Definitely seems to be the slower of the two. Yeah. Because Nary and Jamie are now just finding their apple. Yeah. and they've been there for a while And then their team number five. And I think they thought they were.
The Amazing Rewatch: higher because phil's like your team number five and they're like oh And so Vanessa and Ralph are still looking for their apples, but they'd find it not too far after.
The Amazing Rewatch: And they go out to get in their car to go to the pit stop. And their driver takes their clue and like walks away to go and find out. like where they're supposed to be. And.
The Amazing Rewatch: The way they edit it makes it seem like They had a really hard time finding him and getting him back. Yeah, because it... the The timeline of the editing is that Joey and Danny. find their apple and get in their cab. Yeah. before Vanessa and Ralph.
The Amazing Rewatch: ah Their cab driver comes back. Yeah. So it's like, oh. That's crazy. that they finished it that fast and they've been standing out there but Uh...
The Amazing Rewatch: They, yeah, so you're like, who's going to be? Vanessa and Ralph are there first and their team number six, and they have said cheese and crackers. 15 times this episode.
The Amazing Rewatch: Really? Ralph and Vanessa? Yeah. I haven't even noticed it at all. You didn't hear it? No, I didn't even notice it. You're like, oh, cheese and crackers. Oh, cheese and crackers. I didn't even notice at all.
The Amazing Rewatch: That's weird. because They said it a lot. That's funny. but So, um yeah, then. You said Joey and Danny are team number seven. yeah And they are eliminated.
The Amazing Rewatch: Yeah. So... Sometimes taking a risk pays off, but... This case, it did not. Yeah. And...
The Amazing Rewatch: kind of unfortunate they were Getting better. Mm hmm. They had... Second place last episode? Yeah. So they were almost eliminated like the first episode, I think.
The Amazing Rewatch: And then they moved up to eighth place and then they had third, third, second, and then dropped back down to seventh. So they had 5 .5 as their average. And...
The Amazing Rewatch: They're the first team to be eliminated in Azerbaijan.
The Amazing Rewatch: And... after the race
