00:00:25
Speaker
The entire book is actually the entire story is James is having a delirium.
00:00:32
Speaker
This is the second book in a row where I call out that this is it's just the synapses of a dying brain.
00:00:38
Speaker
And first, Road Rash guest starring Alex Fasciane.
00:00:42
Speaker
Go check that episode out.
00:00:44
Speaker
But this one also is just the synapses of a dying brain as he pooped himself to death in the public restroom that we see at the beginning of the game.
00:00:53
Speaker
What a shame.
00:00:54
Speaker
What a real, just a real bummer all the way around.

Speaker
Um...
00:02:18
Speaker
So, yeah, we're we're closing up this book and did it with anything surprise you in this final segment here or?

Angela's Trauma and Storytelling Approach

00:02:28
Speaker
No, I know.
00:02:29
Speaker
I mean, you know, the broad strokes of Silent Hill, too.
00:02:32
Speaker
Exactly.
00:02:33
Speaker
I just I knew that there were some moments that I was like, OK, I'll I'll have to check with Kevin about the parallels here on some of the specifics.
00:02:41
Speaker
But I don't think I was I wasn't I wouldn't say I was surprised.
00:02:44
Speaker
Yeah.
00:02:45
Speaker
per se per se per se um persimmon persnammon uh other words that i'm just making up right now okay okay cool um yeah let's put the body in the marsh let's do it when i tell you to dump a body in the marsh you dump them
00:03:07
Speaker
In the marsh.
00:03:09
Speaker
All right.
00:03:11
Speaker
So we're picking up at like chapter three in the section called To the Deepest Depths or what have you.
00:03:21
Speaker
James is walking through the grimy prison and finds an elevator which takes him deeper still.
00:03:27
Speaker
The elevator drops him off in a maze with several sets of stairs leading down.
00:03:31
Speaker
He begins going down one set, but then is scared by those hanging monsters that hang on the underside of the chain length fence mesh flooring.
00:03:41
Speaker
He then sees Pyramid Head walking towards him and he dashes into the labyrinth, turning blindly until he runs down a set of stairs to find a jail cell with Maria in it.
00:03:49
Speaker
He is confused because he thought that she should have been dead after the stabbing.
00:03:53
Speaker
But she assures him that she is fine and then starts talking about how he must have forgotten

Angela's Perspective and Player Interpretation

00:03:58
Speaker
that videotape at the hotel.
00:04:00
Speaker
She tells him she can be whatever he wants to be, whatever he wants her to be and to just get her out of the cell.
00:04:07
Speaker
And he's like, I'm going to figure it out.
00:04:11
Speaker
We get a scene of Angela's internal monologue, which talks about the sexual abuse that she suffered at the hands of her father and brother and her repeated thoughts of self-harm and suicide.
00:04:22
Speaker
She wakes up from this dream in a room that resembles her childhood home, except the walls and floors are made of raw meat and there are cylinders pumping in and out of the walls.
00:04:33
Speaker
And then she senses someone creeping closer to her bed.
00:04:40
Speaker
So just as a FYI, we never get Angela or anyone else's perspective in Silent Hill 2.
00:04:50
Speaker
It's strictly from James's perspective.
00:04:53
Speaker
So...
00:04:54
Speaker
A lot of the stuff that we know about Angela is gleaned from conversation and visuals and all that stuff.
00:05:04
Speaker
It's it's not explicit.

James and Eddie's Confrontation

00:05:06
Speaker
Like we don't have her explicit thoughts basically spelled out for us.
00:05:12
Speaker
So that's at least that's at least, you know, some level of a different take on.
00:05:18
Speaker
Yes.
00:05:19
Speaker
Yeah.
00:05:19
Speaker
That's that's cool.
00:05:20
Speaker
I mean, it's yeah.
00:05:21
Speaker
And it's pretty it is it is like the canon assumption that this is what happened to Angela, but it's not as explicitly stated.
00:05:32
Speaker
It's more subtle in the game.
00:05:35
Speaker
Elsewhere, James is continuing through the darkness, still being chased by Pyramid Head.
00:05:39
Speaker
James takes cover somewhere and fires his gun at Pyramid Head until it falls to the ground, but starts getting back up.
00:05:45
Speaker
James starts running again until he hears a woman screaming, telling her daddy to stop.
00:05:51
Speaker
James opens the door and nearby is Angela's room.
00:05:56
Speaker
And he sees her being approached by a monster, which is described as having two entangled bodies covering the frame of a bed, its arms and legs extending over the sides, acting as bedposts.
00:06:12
Speaker
In the game, this is this monster is known as Abstract Daddy.
00:06:19
Speaker
OK.
00:06:22
Speaker
Okie dokie.
00:06:23
Speaker
Jesus.
00:06:25
Speaker
James shoots it several times with the hunting rifle until it falls to the ground.
00:06:30
Speaker
He tries to console Angela, but she is too traumatized and accuses him of wanting the same thing and then says to him, your wife died, huh?
00:06:39
Speaker
Are you sure you just didn't want her around anymore?
00:06:42
Speaker
And then Angela walks off into the darkness.
00:06:46
Speaker
They're pretty on the nose when it comes to being pretty cruel with this shit.
00:06:51
Speaker
Yes.
00:06:52
Speaker
Yeah.
00:06:52
Speaker
Yeah.
00:06:53
Speaker
Yeah.
00:06:54
Speaker
James continues running through the mazes and eventually finds a metal door leading to Maria's cell.
00:06:58
Speaker
But when he opens the door, expecting a rain of grateful kisses, quote unquote, he finds.
00:07:07
Speaker
Yeah.

Moral Struggles and Player Decisions

00:07:08
Speaker
Yeah.
00:07:08
Speaker
I was like, oh, OK.
00:07:10
Speaker
Okey dokey.
00:07:11
Speaker
Yeah.
00:07:11
Speaker
Huh.
00:07:13
Speaker
He finds Maria's dead body on the bed covered in blood.
00:07:16
Speaker
She looks like she has a gunshot wound and deduces that the only two people wandering around here are Angela and Eddie, and Eddie was the only one with a gun.
00:07:25
Speaker
So he goes off to find Eddie.
00:07:27
Speaker
Eventually, he comes into a room with four gravestones.
00:07:31
Speaker
One of them is Walter Sullivan, the man who killed the two kids from the article that we see earlier in the story.
00:07:40
Speaker
The others are Eddie Dombrowski and Angela Orozco.
00:07:43
Speaker
The fourth grave marker is his and is accompanied by a gaping hole.
00:07:48
Speaker
James jumps down and finds himself in a straight corridor and at the end goes through a door that leads him to a freezer where he finds Eddie talking to himself about how he killed people that made fun of him.
00:07:59
Speaker
And he thinks James is one of them.
00:08:03
Speaker
James fires off a warning shot to scare Eddie away, who flees in the next room.
00:08:08
Speaker
And James realizes that if he goes in, only one of them is coming out alive.
00:08:15
Speaker
When he enters, Eddie is monologuing about what happens when you're constantly belittled and how he killed someone's dog once and then shot the owner in the leg.
00:08:23
Speaker
Okay.
00:08:25
Speaker
Yeah.
00:08:25
Speaker
Yeah.
00:08:26
Speaker
Okay.
00:08:27
Speaker
He's having a real normal one, isn't he?
00:08:29
Speaker
He's having a normal one.
00:08:30
Speaker
Eddie is having a normal one on Maine.
00:08:35
Speaker
He needs to, quote unquote, touch grass.
00:08:39
Speaker
I mean, Jesus, like, good Lord.
00:08:42
Speaker
There's a lot going on there.
00:08:43
Speaker
There's touch therapy.
00:08:45
Speaker
Talk to a therapist because.
00:08:46
Speaker
Yeah, we can't unpack all of that.
00:08:49
Speaker
But really, everybody, if you're in Silent Hill, Silent Hill is basically your you should be in therapy.
00:08:56
Speaker
Weren't like.
00:08:58
Speaker
Yeah.
00:08:59
Speaker
I mean, Silent Hill is what happens when when you have refused for too long to go into therapy.
00:09:05
Speaker
So, yeah.
00:09:05
Speaker
Yeah.
00:09:07
Speaker
Some some guys will go into a town which is the visualization of their fears and shame and guilt manifest rather than going to therapy.
00:09:19
Speaker
Exactly.
00:09:20
Speaker
Exactly.
00:09:24
Speaker
It's pretty sad.
00:09:25
Speaker
Yeah, it's pretty sad.
00:09:27
Speaker
James is having trouble finding Eddie amidst the sides of beef hanging from hooks in the ceiling.
00:09:32
Speaker
James tries to run away.
00:09:34
Speaker
Actually, no, I think they're pigs, not beef.
00:09:38
Speaker
James tries to run away, but Eddie catches him and holds him at gunpoint.
00:09:41
Speaker
And but just as he is about to shoot James, James fires the gun and kills or shoots Eddie as Eddie lies dying.
00:09:48
Speaker
We get to see Silent Hill from his point of view, and he is set upon by a pack of dogs like the dog that he shot, which rip him apart, disembowel him.
00:10:00
Speaker
And then we go back to James, who is just watching Eddie die like James doesn't see the dogs.

Emotional Weight of James's Actions

00:10:05
Speaker
But that's that is Eddie's Silent Hill is being is being ripped apart by the dogs.
00:10:13
Speaker
James then gets upset, realizing he has killed a human being.
00:10:17
Speaker
He's like, oh, no, I have killed a man, killed somebody for the first time.
00:10:23
Speaker
Right, right.
00:10:24
Speaker
And that and that's and that's I knew enough when I read this to to want to do they go into this in in the game?
00:10:33
Speaker
Like, because it feels like.
00:10:36
Speaker
That's something you don't usually deal with in these kinds of games at all.
00:10:41
Speaker
I don't remember.
00:10:42
Speaker
Notwithstanding.
00:10:43
Speaker
Yeah, I don't remember specifically if James has too much of a commentary on killing Eddie or not.
00:10:49
Speaker
Okay.
00:10:49
Speaker
Okay, fair enough.
00:10:50
Speaker
I would have to watch a replay of it.
00:10:53
Speaker
Yeah.
00:10:55
Speaker
Then we get to the next section of the book, and I believe it's the final section of the book called Memories of the Lakes Shore.
00:11:04
Speaker
James leaves the freezer and he finds himself outside again somehow, despite descending deeper and deeper.
00:11:11
Speaker
He's relatively close to the Silent Hill Historical Society, standing by a large dock.
00:11:15
Speaker
He takes a nearby rowboat and starts off across the lake towards the Lakeview Hotel.
00:11:21
Speaker
As he as he rows, he sees hands trying to pull him down into the abyss of the lake, and he rose faster to get to the other side.
00:11:29
Speaker
He gets to the hotel and starts thinking about the time, his time there with Mary and how he is so alone now.
00:11:36
Speaker
Inside is a map of the hotel with a circle drawn around room 312 with a handwritten note that said, waiting for you.
00:11:45
Speaker
James knows that it's Mary's handwriting and that 312 was the room that he had stayed in with her years ago.
00:11:52
Speaker
Hmm.
00:12:12
Speaker
He enters the room it's coming from and it's Laura.
00:12:16
Speaker
She's there to see Mary too, she says.
00:12:18
Speaker
She doesn't know where Mary is either.
00:12:20
Speaker
And that's why she's been running all over town.
00:12:22
Speaker
She shows James the letter that she got from Mary, which says that she is to be given it after she's gone and that she's in a far away, beautiful place and that she tells Laura to give James a chance, even though he's always so surly.
00:12:37
Speaker
Um...
00:12:38
Speaker
So basically, at least for words.
00:12:41
Speaker
Yeah, yeah, exactly.
00:12:43
Speaker
Laura Blur being a kid was like, oh, the quite beautiful place is silent.
00:12:48
Speaker
This Silent Hill place that she that that she was always talking about, not knowing that it's like it's the it's, you know, Mary was telling her I'm dead.
00:12:57
Speaker
I'm in a better place.
00:13:00
Speaker
Laura was like, oh, I left read the letter and is like, I left.
00:13:04
Speaker
I went to Silent Hill.
00:13:05
Speaker
Oh,
00:13:08
Speaker
Oh, yeah.
00:13:09
Speaker
Got it.
00:13:10
Speaker
Laura says she has another letter that would make everything make sense.
00:13:14
Speaker
But then she realizes that she must have dropped it and runs off into the hallway.
00:13:19
Speaker
James returns to room 312 and watches the videotape.
00:13:23
Speaker
So the last time they were in Silent Hill and it's very peaceful.
00:13:26
Speaker
Mary asks him to take her back there someday, and then she begins having a coughing fit.
00:13:31
Speaker
James begins sobbing when the tape frizzes out and starts playing his memories of him killing Mary.
00:13:38
Speaker
She is dead.
00:13:41
Speaker
Laura arrives as James is buried in his grief, and he tells Laura that Mary is dead and admits that he killed her.
00:13:48
Speaker
She's dead because he killed her.
00:13:50
Speaker
Laura slaps him and yells at him for doing that and runs off.
00:13:54
Speaker
As James sits alone in the room, the radio begins playing a bunch of broadcasts and then finally Mary's voice asking for him.
00:14:03
Speaker
Meanwhile, the

Guilt and Truth about James's Wife's Death

00:14:04
Speaker
only difference is in the book, it seems like he choked her to death.
00:14:06
Speaker
And in in I think in in the game, it's a pillow.
00:14:10
Speaker
It's a pillow over the head.
00:14:13
Speaker
OK, OK.
00:14:14
Speaker
Either way, we're cutting off.
00:14:15
Speaker
We're cutting off lung circulation.
00:14:17
Speaker
All right.
00:14:18
Speaker
Yeah.
00:14:18
Speaker
Yeah.
00:14:19
Speaker
Yeah.
00:14:22
Speaker
Yeah.
00:14:22
Speaker
It's cheery either way.
00:14:24
Speaker
It's just it's just cheery.
00:14:25
Speaker
Yeah.
00:14:28
Speaker
Bright and shiny moment.
00:14:29
Speaker
Yeah, absolutely.
00:14:30
Speaker
Absolutely.
00:14:31
Speaker
Thank God for that.
00:14:31
Speaker
One shining moment.
00:14:35
Speaker
One shining moment.
00:14:39
Speaker
That's the song that this game needed.
00:14:43
Speaker
That song.
00:14:44
Speaker
That probably would have been terrifying.
00:14:46
Speaker
That would have been you just like play it really slow and off key.
00:14:53
Speaker
Oh no.
00:14:54
Speaker
Yeah.
00:14:56
Speaker
With some analog static pops like it's on an old record.
00:15:02
Speaker
One shining moment.
00:15:03
Speaker
Yeah.
00:15:05
Speaker
Oh look there's a little puppy in the background.
00:15:08
Speaker
Hey bud.
00:15:10
Speaker
You're just staring at me now.
00:15:15
Speaker
Hey, go to sleep.
00:15:17
Speaker
There you go.
00:15:17
Speaker
Okay.
00:15:20
Speaker
So as he leaves room 312, he finds that the hotel seems to have deteriorated since he was in there.
00:15:27
Speaker
He goes down the stairs and sees another abstract daddy, and he's furious that it's there because it's blocking his path.
00:15:34
Speaker
He shoots it with the rifle and then tries to step over it, but it grabs him by the ankle and he needs to smash its head with the butt of a rifle until it dies.
00:15:43
Speaker
He gets up and hears Mary's voice again on the radio.
00:15:47
Speaker
James recalls the conversation with Mary's doctor when he found out that she was terminal and could die in six months to three years.
00:15:55
Speaker
James fights his way through the hotel with it seemingly shifting around him.
00:15:59
Speaker
He ends up in the basement at one point and then back up into the kitchen and through the bar.
00:16:03
Speaker
And he finds himself in a stairwell where the walls look like they are on fire.
00:16:09
Speaker
Angela slowly descends the stairs and says that she's finally found her mama and that maybe she can be happy.
00:16:16
Speaker
But then she realizes it's not her mama, it's James.
00:16:19
Speaker
Angela starts talking about how her mama left her even though she knew what her father and brother were doing to her and how she took care of them with that knife.
00:16:27
Speaker
She tells James that he's just another person dragged to this drags it to this town to rot for his sins.
00:16:35
Speaker
And then she asks for the knife back.
00:16:37
Speaker
James says he doesn't have it anymore.
00:16:39
Speaker
Angela laughs to herself and walks back up to the stairs and the blaze intensifies and James leaves.
00:16:45
Speaker
And that's that's picture picture wrap on Angela.
00:16:49
Speaker
We're not.
00:16:50
Speaker
Oh, yeah.
00:16:50
Speaker
We're not going to see her anymore.
00:16:52
Speaker
She's gone.
00:16:53
Speaker
Don't worry about it, guys.
00:16:54
Speaker
She's gone.
00:16:55
Speaker
It's fine.
00:16:55
Speaker
She's she's fine, too.
00:16:57
Speaker
She's fine.
00:16:57
Speaker
She's fine.
00:16:58
Speaker
Yeah, everything's fine.
00:16:59
Speaker
Don't don't don't worry about any of this.
00:17:01
Speaker
Everything's fine.
00:17:02
Speaker
I think there's something to be said.
00:17:05
Speaker
So this is going back to like Silent Hill is different things for different people.
00:17:10
Speaker
And so for Eddie, it was cold.
00:17:13
Speaker
It was always cold.
00:17:14
Speaker
Right.
00:17:15
Speaker
And that's why you end up fighting him in a freezer.
00:17:18
Speaker
Right.
00:17:19
Speaker
For James, it's like decaying.
00:17:24
Speaker
Right.
00:17:25
Speaker
Right.
00:17:26
Speaker
Oh, for Angela, it's the flames.
00:17:30
Speaker
And so that's there's a moment in that scene where she's like, do you see them to like the flames that like that's just how she was seeing Silent Hill is something that's always on fire around her.
00:17:43
Speaker
So cool.
00:17:45
Speaker
Yeah, it's it's all in the eye of the beholder.
00:17:48
Speaker
And for Laura, it's a town.
00:17:51
Speaker
There's nothing wrong with Silent Hill, except there's nobody there.
00:17:54
Speaker
You know, it's empty.
00:17:55
Speaker
It's totally silent.
00:17:59
Speaker
That's pretty cool.
00:17:59
Speaker
Yeah.
00:18:01
Speaker
As James walks down the hallway, he finds that the hotel has changed again and the floors and walls are made of chain link.
00:18:08
Speaker
As he approaches the front lobby of the hotel, everything is different now and it's empty except for the grand staircase reaching up to the second floor.
00:18:16
Speaker
And at the top is a woman hanging upside down, looking like she is about to be crucified.
00:18:22
Speaker
It's Maria.
00:18:23
Speaker
There's also two pyramid heads in the room.
00:18:26
Speaker
James finally has a breakdown and realizes that all of this is for him.
00:18:30
Speaker
It was created out of his own repressed memories.
00:18:32
Speaker
The mannequins representing his lust, the armless monsters, his feelings of confinement, the floor monsters, his urge to escape.
00:18:39
Speaker
He also realizes that he couldn't see the monsters Eddie had to face, but perhaps similar darkness allowed him to see into Angela's delusions, which is why he sees her abstract daddy.
00:18:51
Speaker
Um,
00:18:52
Speaker
He fights back against the pyramid heads, knowing that he doesn't need them anymore to punish himself.
00:18:58
Speaker
And after they after they battle for a while, the pyramid heads kill each other.
00:19:03
Speaker
James also notices that the original letter that he had from Mary has vanished from his pocket.
00:19:10
Speaker
James continues down a hallway and begins reliving the memories of Mary's final days, how she's verbally abusive towards him and how the treatments had left her scarred and angry.
00:19:20
Speaker
James wanted to end things with his own hands and let her continue on in that state.
00:19:25
Speaker
As he enters the roof, he sees Maria again, except he knows that she really doesn't exist or that she's some sort of monster, which she then becomes, looking like Mary did during her illness, bound within a metal bed frame.
00:19:38
Speaker
but the demon still had the young, beautiful face of Mary.
00:19:42
Speaker
James thinks about the nature of free will and all that before finally shooting her.
00:19:47
Speaker
He has a final moment with Mary slash Maria where James admits that part of him hated her and that he thought life would be easier if she were gone.
00:19:55
Speaker
Mary forgives him.
00:19:56
Speaker
James then has the final bit of his memory unlocked.
00:20:01
Speaker
He strangled her only a few days ago and that she, her dead body, is sitting in the back of his car.

Exploring Silent Hill 2 Endings

00:20:09
Speaker
Meanwhile, Laura is back in the piano room and finds the letter that she had been looking for.
00:20:14
Speaker
It was the letter addressed to James.
00:20:16
Speaker
She was annoyed with him, but she wasn't angry with him anymore because she didn't understand why he cried like he did.
00:20:23
Speaker
Laura leaves through the hotel's front entrance to see if she can find Mary along the lakeshore.
00:20:28
Speaker
James returns to his car and talks to Mary's lifeless body.
00:20:31
Speaker
He remembers everything now and then says to her, now we can finally be together, just the two of us.
00:20:36
Speaker
He drives the car into the lake.
00:20:39
Speaker
Elsewhere, Laura reads the letter that Mary had left for James while James and Mary sink to the bottom of the lake.
00:20:47
Speaker
And that is the end of Silent Hill 2.
00:20:52
Speaker
That's a wrap.
00:20:56
Speaker
It gets heavy at the end, doesn't it?
00:20:58
Speaker
It's very heavy at the end.
00:21:03
Speaker
It's what we've talked about with translation, you know, needing to have more localization.
00:21:10
Speaker
I feel like we could have yeah, it just it drops onto your balls right there in the last third.
00:21:18
Speaker
Right.
00:21:19
Speaker
What you originally, yeah, because you would I think we mentioned this in the last episode, you would said originally we just got to wrap this thing up.
00:21:25
Speaker
And then you texted me and this is before I read the section and you said things get actually way more complex and fucked in that last third.
00:21:35
Speaker
So I think we are going to devote it's an episode to that by itself.
00:21:39
Speaker
And yeah, yeah, it's it's.
00:21:43
Speaker
I don't know.
00:21:45
Speaker
I feel like if it could have kept that weight from beginning, middle, and end, I feel like this could have been a really, really solid novelization.
00:21:57
Speaker
Yeah.
00:21:58
Speaker
It feels like the author was excited to get to the ending.
00:22:05
Speaker
You know, we've talked about it before, how like how so many of these heavy, huge moments are kind of like, oh, and this happened and then this happened and then this happened.
00:22:13
Speaker
And then finally we get to the end and it's like, OK, and so this shit happened and we're really going to chew on that for a little while.
00:22:21
Speaker
Yeah.
00:22:22
Speaker
Yeah.
00:22:23
Speaker
Yeah.
00:22:24
Speaker
You're right.
00:22:25
Speaker
But it's a shame that it feels rushed to get there and also not necessarily... We don't necessarily feel the weight of this ending.
00:22:38
Speaker
Like, I feel like there should be more of a build-up to this ending rather than just suddenly feeling it.
00:22:48
Speaker
Yeah.
00:22:50
Speaker
I think one and one of the things about the remake, which I thought was interesting, is that when you first start the game, it's a you know, you control the camera.
00:23:02
Speaker
Right.
00:23:02
Speaker
So you can go to James's car and look in the back seat and you can see you don't see necessarily Mary's dead body, but you see something like a blanket covering something in the back seat.
00:23:18
Speaker
Right.
00:23:19
Speaker
And it's like, you know, just a hint of of what's, you know, what this game is about.
00:23:27
Speaker
And that like the Mary that he the letter he received was never real.
00:23:31
Speaker
Right.
00:23:32
Speaker
Right.
00:23:34
Speaker
And that's the advantage that games have over stories like this.
00:23:39
Speaker
You know, it's that visual medium allows you to put in little Easter eggs.
00:23:46
Speaker
Films can do that, too, to a certain extent.
00:23:50
Speaker
And so, yeah, so you're kind of at a disadvantage just telling the story of something like this.
00:23:57
Speaker
Yeah.
00:23:57
Speaker
Right from the get go.
00:23:59
Speaker
And one other thing, and I'm just pulling something up of what all the endings are.
00:24:08
Speaker
There's several endings to the game.
00:24:12
Speaker
The one that the book uses is called the In Water Ending.
00:24:24
Speaker
Okay.
00:24:25
Speaker
Okay.
00:24:27
Speaker
So the description of it is James must act as you're playing, right?
00:24:36
Speaker
Must act in a suicidal or reckless manner while also keeping a strong attachment to Mary.
00:24:41
Speaker
So amongst the things that you had to have done is you are playing a lot with low health.
00:24:51
Speaker
You looked at Angela's knife.
00:24:53
Speaker
You read a suicidal diary on the hospital rooftop.
00:24:57
Speaker
You read new messages to James on the wall of nearly's bar after the hospital.
00:25:02
Speaker
You listen to the entire sickbed conversation of James and Mary before the final boss.
00:25:07
Speaker
So if you do a lot of those things and then you you avoid there's like a few things to avoid doing, you'll get the in water ending, which is James driving into the car or driving the car into the lake.
00:25:26
Speaker
Right.
00:25:28
Speaker
Does that suggest then that that's the canon ending, if that's what we went with in this novelization?
00:25:35
Speaker
I don't know.
00:25:36
Speaker
Or does that even matter with this kind of a timeline with this game?
00:25:41
Speaker
I'm not sure it necessarily matters, you know?
00:25:43
Speaker
Right.
00:25:46
Speaker
Like there's, there's an ending called leave where you just like, you just leave silent Hill, you know?
00:25:53
Speaker
Um, there's one where I think you leave with, uh, I'm just looking at the going through them right now.

Discussion on Silent Hill Movie Adaptations

00:26:03
Speaker
Um,
00:26:07
Speaker
There's one called rebirth.
00:26:09
Speaker
I don't know what exactly is that.
00:26:12
Speaker
There's one where you, you get a dog basically controlling everything.
00:26:16
Speaker
Um, I've heard of that one.
00:26:21
Speaker
Yeah.
00:26:21
Speaker
Uh,
00:26:25
Speaker
And then, yeah, there's a bunch of different options.
00:26:35
Speaker
So the main endings are Leave, Maria, and In Water, and then New Game Plus is Rebirth, Stillness, Bliss, Dog, and UFO.
00:26:46
Speaker
It's just rattling them off at the end makes it that much more absurd.
00:26:50
Speaker
I kind of love that.
00:26:52
Speaker
Dog and UFOs.
00:26:54
Speaker
So I guess the... I don't know.
00:27:01
Speaker
I don't know.
00:27:01
Speaker
I feel like you could have... That's the problem.
00:27:05
Speaker
To me, that's ultimately a problem with multiple endings, right?
00:27:10
Speaker
Is that you don't... Not all stories are actually... They're not necessarily flexible enough to...
00:27:23
Speaker
to sustain that number of endings.
00:27:27
Speaker
Now, I think it kind of works when you're playing Silent Hill 2 because the ending is supposed to be and I don't even know how good this kind of works in practice, but the ending is supposed to fit the way that you played the game, right?
00:27:46
Speaker
Um, so if you did a bunch of things where, you know, it, it, you're focused on Maria, you get the Maria ending.
00:27:57
Speaker
Um, right.
00:27:58
Speaker
If you focus on things that are reckless, you get the, this, the in water suicide ending.
00:28:03
Speaker
You know what I mean?
00:28:04
Speaker
It's like, right.
00:28:05
Speaker
It's supposed to make sense when you, when you get there.
00:28:10
Speaker
Um, that being said, I don't think necessarily the book, um,
00:28:16
Speaker
does the thing to support the in water ending a hundred percent.
00:28:24
Speaker
Interesting.
00:28:25
Speaker
Okay.
00:28:27
Speaker
I mean, there's an ending where you leave with like you get take Laura and you drive out of town.
00:28:32
Speaker
You know what I mean?
00:28:33
Speaker
Right.
00:28:34
Speaker
Which is like, to me, it's like the ending that makes the most sense.
00:28:39
Speaker
Like if it's a happy, like if you're going with a happy ending, that one makes the most sense because, because Mary wanted to, one of the things you see in the letter that she had to Laura was that she wanted to adopt Laura because Laura is a orphan.
00:28:56
Speaker
We find out and she's like, give James a chance and maybe it could be a whole new life or whatever.
00:29:03
Speaker
But in the book, James is like, fuck that noise.
00:29:06
Speaker
I'm driving the car into the lake.
00:29:09
Speaker
So.
00:29:11
Speaker
I don't know.
00:29:12
Speaker
Did you ever see the Silent Hill movie?
00:29:14
Speaker
Hmm.
00:29:18
Speaker
Yeah, I did.
00:29:20
Speaker
I actually really enjoyed it.
00:29:23
Speaker
But now in it, like looking back, it's, it's kind of a weak plot line for everything that silent Hill tends to do.
00:29:34
Speaker
Um,
00:29:36
Speaker
And like Pyramid Head and the nurses and all that stuff.
00:29:39
Speaker
They kind of reworked it.
00:29:41
Speaker
Right.
00:29:42
Speaker
I think probably to make the characters a little more sympathetic or something like that.
00:29:46
Speaker
Isn't it Sean Bean is in it?
00:29:47
Speaker
Yeah.
00:29:48
Speaker
Yeah.
00:29:49
Speaker
I think.
00:29:50
Speaker
Yeah.
00:29:50
Speaker
I forget her.
00:29:51
Speaker
Yeah.
00:29:51
Speaker
He's Naomi Watts.
00:29:54
Speaker
Is it Naomi?
00:29:54
Speaker
I don't know if it's Naomi Watts.
00:29:56
Speaker
It's like I think it's silver medalist Naomi Watts.
00:29:59
Speaker
Let me see.
00:30:01
Speaker
Silent Hill movie.
00:30:04
Speaker
Oh, no, it's it's it's Rada Mitchell.
00:30:07
Speaker
Yes.
00:30:08
Speaker
Yes.
00:30:08
Speaker
And she's not great in it.
00:30:12
Speaker
It's not like it's not like a brilliant movie, but I still think it's really good at the same time.
00:30:18
Speaker
And my favorite like female villainous actress is an Alice Krieg.
00:30:26
Speaker
Alice Krieg.
00:30:27
Speaker
And she she's so good in everything.
00:30:30
Speaker
She brings such good dark energy to it.
00:30:34
Speaker
It's like the only thing I think I really remember her from are this.
00:30:38
Speaker
And as the Borg queen, because she's the Borg queen in Star Trek.
00:30:45
Speaker
What's it?
00:30:46
Speaker
The fucking one where they go in the past.
00:30:48
Speaker
Yeah.
00:30:49
Speaker
Yeah.
00:30:49
Speaker
Oh, uh, fucking yeah.
00:30:51
Speaker
I know which one you're talking about, but, uh, no, she just, that's the character she plays in everything.
00:30:56
Speaker
Basically.
00:30:57
Speaker
She brings that same like bleak energy to everything she does.
00:31:01
Speaker
And she's so good at it.
00:31:03
Speaker
Yeah.
00:31:03
Speaker
Um,
00:31:04
Speaker
Yeah, I like I don't mind the idea of like to me, it's like you don't need to you don't need to adapt the game or the or anything specifically for a Silent Hill story, I would say, because the idea of Silent Hill is that it's this place that kind of

Silent Hill as Purgatory Concept

00:31:27
Speaker
punishes you or it it.
00:31:31
Speaker
Yeah, it's almost like a purgatory.
00:31:33
Speaker
You know, it's a purgation, as it were, for the sins of your past.
00:31:44
Speaker
And so I feel like it doesn't, you don't need to adapt the game.
00:31:50
Speaker
That being said, it's fucking stupid to have Pyramid Head in any other story.
00:31:59
Speaker
Right.
00:32:00
Speaker
Pyramid Head is, it's for James Sunderland.
00:32:04
Speaker
It's not for anybody else.
00:32:06
Speaker
It's his hell.
00:32:08
Speaker
That's his demon.
00:32:09
Speaker
That's his creation.
00:32:11
Speaker
But they couldn't not include it because it's such an iconic image.
00:32:15
Speaker
And same as the nurses, you know, the nurses.
00:32:17
Speaker
Yeah.
00:32:18
Speaker
Like the nurses and are his, what was it?
00:32:20
Speaker
They were, I mean, they say the mannequins are his lust, but I think the sexy nurses are also his lust.
00:32:26
Speaker
I think they're yeah, that that's pretty.
00:32:29
Speaker
Yeah.
00:32:31
Speaker
They're faceless and they got they got boobies.
00:32:34
Speaker
Yeah.
00:32:35
Speaker
Yeah.
00:32:36
Speaker
Yeah.
00:32:36
Speaker
The fact that they don't have faces says a hell of a lot in and of itself.
00:32:41
Speaker
But yeah, I mean, they had to.
00:32:45
Speaker
They at least with the nurses, they kind of gave an explanation in the film why they are there.
00:32:52
Speaker
They didn't they didn't do that with Pyramid Head at all.
00:32:54
Speaker
He was just a freaky ass punisher, basically.
00:32:58
Speaker
Right.
00:32:59
Speaker
Which he deserves better.
00:33:02
Speaker
But but it is.
00:33:03
Speaker
But I do think it is one of the better video game movies out there right now.
00:33:07
Speaker
Yeah.
00:33:07
Speaker
And, oh, there's a few, there's other Silent Hill movies.
00:33:12
Speaker
I mean, I know there's one in production should be coming out next year.
00:33:18
Speaker
Uh, for that is a literal adaptation of, uh, Silent Hill two.
00:33:23
Speaker
Okay.
00:33:24
Speaker
Okay.
00:33:25
Speaker
So we'll see.
00:33:27
Speaker
We'll see how that goes.
00:33:29
Speaker
Uh,
00:33:31
Speaker
Hannah Emily Anderson plays Mary.
00:33:38
Speaker
I assume Maria too.
00:33:42
Speaker
It's live action?
00:33:43
Speaker
It's live action, yeah.
00:33:45
Speaker
Nice.
00:33:45
Speaker
Okay.
00:33:46
Speaker
Yeah, the way they've been doing some of the Resident Evil stuff lately with the like the animation.
00:33:51
Speaker
Yeah, that's the thing is like the Resident Evil, those Resident Evil digital like CG movies are.
00:34:00
Speaker
What's funny is like those are canon.
00:34:02
Speaker
Those are like the like there's the game series and the CG movies and they're all part of the canon and anything that's not them is not.
00:34:11
Speaker
Right.

Potential of Silent Hill 2 Film Adaptations

00:34:13
Speaker
Right.
00:34:15
Speaker
And that's fine.
00:34:16
Speaker
That's fine.
00:34:19
Speaker
I mean, I know another, there's another Resident Evil movie being worked on by the guy who made weapons.
00:34:26
Speaker
Oh, Zach Krieger.
00:34:28
Speaker
Yeah.
00:34:30
Speaker
Yeah.
00:34:30
Speaker
From the whitest kids, you know.
00:34:32
Speaker
Yeah.
00:34:32
Speaker
And barbarian.
00:34:33
Speaker
Yeah.
00:34:33
Speaker
He had another, another, uh, uh, uh,
00:34:37
Speaker
ridiculous comedy person who ended up making horror flicks.
00:34:41
Speaker
Making horror flicks.
00:34:42
Speaker
Yeah.
00:34:42
Speaker
What's it with the sketch comedy guys going into horror?
00:34:47
Speaker
I don't know.
00:34:48
Speaker
I don't know.
00:34:49
Speaker
But it kind of makes sense if you know enough comedians.
00:34:52
Speaker
Yeah.
00:34:53
Speaker
Yeah.
00:34:53
Speaker
Yeah.
00:34:54
Speaker
There's, there's a darkness there.
00:34:56
Speaker
Um, yeah.
00:34:57
Speaker
So I'm interested in, in how these other adaptations sold up.
00:35:02
Speaker
I might do a, I may do like a little rewatch of the silent hill, like movie, uh, movies, um,
00:35:13
Speaker
I think I only was barely aware that there were more.
00:35:17
Speaker
So that's interesting.
00:35:18
Speaker
Yeah.
00:35:19
Speaker
Well, fucking what's his name is in one of them.
00:35:26
Speaker
Kit Harrington.
00:35:27
Speaker
No shit.
00:35:29
Speaker
Yeah.
00:35:30
Speaker
Uh, you gotta get, gotta get, gotta get all the game of Thrones kids on there.
00:35:34
Speaker
Make sure this is 2012.
00:35:37
Speaker
So this is like mid early mid yeah.
00:35:41
Speaker
Early game of Thrones still.
00:35:42
Speaker
Um, so what are you doing kit?
00:35:46
Speaker
Uh, oh yeah, no, it's Kit Harrington and Sean Bean is in it because obviously he was in the other one.
00:35:54
Speaker
Right.
00:35:55
Speaker
Yeah.
00:35:55
Speaker
Yeah.
00:35:56
Speaker
Yeah.
00:35:57
Speaker
Which did have a good ending.
00:36:00
Speaker
It did have a good ending.
00:36:01
Speaker
Yeah.
00:36:03
Speaker
I thought they stayed true to the general themes of it.
00:36:07
Speaker
Anyway, that's neither here nor there.
00:36:09
Speaker
That's neither here nor there.
00:36:10
Speaker
But you know what?
00:36:11
Speaker
Maybe we can do an episode on...
00:36:20
Speaker
Jesus Christ, is there another one?
00:36:22
Speaker
Is it?
00:36:24
Speaker
There's a third one.
00:36:26
Speaker
Silent Hill Requiem?
00:36:31
Speaker
Is this a game?
00:36:32
Speaker
No, it's a movie.
00:36:33
Speaker
It's two hours long.
00:36:35
Speaker
Maybe we can do some episodes on the Silent Hill movies.
00:36:39
Speaker
Yeah.
00:36:40
Speaker
Yeah, that would actually be a lot of fun.
00:36:45
Speaker
I would enjoy that.
00:36:45
Speaker
That would be fun.
00:36:47
Speaker
I think that would be fun.
00:36:48
Speaker
So it could

Phil's Experience in Act 3 of Rogue Trader

00:36:49
Speaker
be fun.
00:36:49
Speaker
It'll be fun to an extent, to a, to a point, to an extent.
00:36:52
Speaker
Yeah.
00:36:53
Speaker
Oh my God.
00:36:54
Speaker
The first one was made by TriStar.
00:36:56
Speaker
I missed that logo.
00:36:57
Speaker
Oh gosh.
00:36:59
Speaker
Think about that.
00:37:00
Speaker
You know, with the, with the Pegasus.
00:37:02
Speaker
Yeah.
00:37:02
Speaker
Yeah.
00:37:06
Speaker
Yeah.
00:37:07
Speaker
TriStar and Columbia were the two that I always enjoyed seeing at the front.
00:37:13
Speaker
Yeah.
00:37:14
Speaker
Anyway, yeah, so I guess that's all the thoughts on the book, right?
00:37:20
Speaker
You don't have... Yeah, I think that's the extent of it.
00:37:23
Speaker
I think I am willing to forgive.
00:37:28
Speaker
I'm not too hard on it because this is not an official translation, obviously.
00:37:34
Speaker
This is somebody who...
00:37:36
Speaker
was passionate about translating it and they did their best and I cannot fault them for that.
00:37:41
Speaker
Sure.
00:37:42
Speaker
Sure.
00:37:42
Speaker
And I will not.
00:37:44
Speaker
Yeah.
00:37:44
Speaker
It just but it does leave a little something to be desired.
00:37:47
Speaker
And it makes me wonder what we could get with a professional translator, somebody who knows how to take the liberties and to localize it and that sort of thing.
00:38:01
Speaker
Sure.
00:38:01
Speaker
Sure.
00:38:02
Speaker
So I'm more intrigued than anything else.
00:38:04
Speaker
But
00:38:05
Speaker
Yeah, it's not bad.
00:38:08
Speaker
I think it's firmly there in the middle of our kind of experiences.
00:38:13
Speaker
It's fine.
00:38:13
Speaker
Yeah, I'm not frustrated.
00:38:16
Speaker
Yeah, no, and I think that's the thing.
00:38:19
Speaker
Silent Hill 2 has a...
00:38:21
Speaker
really good backbone of a story there that I think it takes a lot to, to fuck it up.
00:38:29
Speaker
Yeah.
00:38:30
Speaker
Yeah.
00:38:31
Speaker
It's well, it's based on its atmosphere.
00:38:34
Speaker
And, and I remember watching a special about the creation of it and they actually hired dancers specifically to play the creatures in it.
00:38:46
Speaker
And, and because it was so, and it's so funny.
00:38:49
Speaker
There were so many practical effects and it's very physically.
00:38:53
Speaker
And I mean, that's really impressive.
00:38:55
Speaker
That's pretty cool.
00:38:56
Speaker
Yeah.
00:38:56
Speaker
To go that far with it.
00:38:58
Speaker
And it shows.
00:38:58
Speaker
I think I think the creatures are really well translated at very least.
00:39:03
Speaker
Yeah.
00:39:05
Speaker
So, Phil, I got one final question for you.
00:39:09
Speaker
Oh, please, please.
00:39:11
Speaker
What are you playing?
00:39:13
Speaker
Oh, I'm glad you asked, actually.
00:39:15
Speaker
I have a few things here.
00:39:17
Speaker
I'm still playing Rogue Trader, obviously.
00:39:21
Speaker
I finally got to Chapter 3, Act 3.
00:39:25
Speaker
Yeah, the Dracari attacked my house.
00:39:28
Speaker
I had to kick some ass.
00:39:31
Speaker
I met the ship's machine spirit, who is just weird.

Challenges in Dracari Gladiatorial State

00:39:35
Speaker
Nomos?
00:39:36
Speaker
Yeah, Nomos.
00:39:37
Speaker
Getting to know Nomos.
00:39:38
Speaker
Did you talk to Nomos?
00:39:42
Speaker
Pascal downloads him into a servitor.
00:39:44
Speaker
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
00:39:46
Speaker
I got to meet him.
00:39:46
Speaker
It's like the option, your dialogue options like Pascal, this is really fucking weird.
00:39:51
Speaker
Why would you do that?
00:39:53
Speaker
I love and I love that you're meeting him at your party.
00:39:56
Speaker
Like your, your Ascension party is like you, people have been massacred and they're like, well, we have to, it's tradition.
00:40:03
Speaker
We have to give you this party since you're the, the head rogue trainer.
00:40:07
Speaker
It's like, right.
00:40:07
Speaker
Okay.
00:40:09
Speaker
Um, yeah.
00:40:10
Speaker
And while you're there, you meet this, uh,
00:40:13
Speaker
insane AI who might be a God.
00:40:17
Speaker
It's all very weird.
00:40:18
Speaker
Yeah.
00:40:19
Speaker
It's pretty great.
00:40:20
Speaker
I assume with your background in Warhammer, you have like an inkling of where it's going.
00:40:25
Speaker
Yeah.
00:40:26
Speaker
Yeah.
00:40:27
Speaker
I've got an idea of where they take me.
00:40:29
Speaker
It's like, hey, we got an AI on our ship.
00:40:32
Speaker
Right, right.
00:40:33
Speaker
It's like, okay, you know, it's interesting.
00:40:37
Speaker
Because I don't think I've ever read it portrayed this way, and that's pretty cool.
00:40:45
Speaker
Got my inquisitorial interrogation.
00:40:47
Speaker
Oh, that's actually a pretty cool moment where...
00:40:51
Speaker
Yeah.
00:40:52
Speaker
So I'm curious as to how yours went because Xavier Calcazar is like for me, because I always end up playing iconoclast because I can never make a choice, a bad guy choice.
00:41:05
Speaker
Sure.
00:41:07
Speaker
His interrogation is like, you tried to save people.
00:41:12
Speaker
Right.
00:41:12
Speaker
What is wrong with you?
00:41:14
Speaker
You should have just listened to my agent and destroyed Rykad Benora, like stuff like that.
00:41:20
Speaker
Yeah.
00:41:22
Speaker
He mostly liked me.
00:41:24
Speaker
I mentioned in a previous episode that Heinrich was mad at me because I just blew up the cogitator that had all of the information.
00:41:34
Speaker
And he was frustrated with that.
00:41:36
Speaker
And I was like, what, bitch?
00:41:37
Speaker
I'm a servant of the Emperor.
00:41:38
Speaker
It's my job to protect people.
00:41:40
Speaker
And the Inquisitor's like...
00:41:41
Speaker
All right.
00:41:41
Speaker
You're, you know, you're, you're, you're dogmatic.
00:41:44
Speaker
You're commendable.
00:41:46
Speaker
We got it.
00:41:47
Speaker
And he's, he was pretty impressed with me for most of the stuff.
00:41:51
Speaker
There was the, I forget which planet it was that I let them live.
00:41:57
Speaker
And I, and I, and I had to assure him, like I vouch for the fact that the heresy is gone.
00:42:02
Speaker
And he was like, okay, well, well, okay.
00:42:05
Speaker
Avogama is like, yes, he gets upset.
00:42:08
Speaker
If you didn't just purge the entire planet.
00:42:11
Speaker
That's exactly it.
00:42:12
Speaker
And so I was like, no, I vouch for it.
00:42:15
Speaker
It's a thing.
00:42:15
Speaker
And he goes, okay, all right.
00:42:18
Speaker
And I got a knife and I got a ring.
00:42:21
Speaker
I only get the ring gifts.
00:42:24
Speaker
Yeah.
00:42:24
Speaker
You know what happened?
00:42:26
Speaker
All right.
00:42:26
Speaker
This is the truth.
00:42:27
Speaker
I played it through.
00:42:29
Speaker
And when I played it through first, I got a knife and a ring.
00:42:33
Speaker
And I was a white ring.
00:42:35
Speaker
And then I got through...
00:42:38
Speaker
I got the achievement for completing Chapter two and I got through a bunch of dialogs and I had to go because we were I don't know what we were doing.
00:42:46
Speaker
I had to leave and I assumed it had auto saved and it had not.
00:42:51
Speaker
And when I came back, I had to go through.
00:42:55
Speaker
I had to go to the master of ceremonies and tell him I'm done and talk to Nomas again and all that shit.
00:43:01
Speaker
Right.
00:43:01
Speaker
Right.
00:43:01
Speaker
All over again.
00:43:02
Speaker
And I don't remember what I said differently, but clearly I did because I got I think I want to say it's a red ring and no knife.
00:43:15
Speaker
And that's the one I saved.
00:43:18
Speaker
And I wish I had that knife now because I am in a Dracari gladiatorial slave state where I am, you know, murdering people and trying to start an insurrection.
00:43:32
Speaker
Right.
00:43:32
Speaker
Which is fun.
00:43:33
Speaker
It's fine.
00:43:34
Speaker
Yeah, yeah, it's a good time.
00:43:37
Speaker
I fucked up because any time I found the right weapons for me and cargoed everything else.
00:43:44
Speaker
And then when I found our Jenta, I didn't have any weapon to give her and we're and we're trying to fuck up that snake guy shit.
00:43:53
Speaker
Yeah.
00:43:54
Speaker
And it's just me.
00:43:56
Speaker
And they're really beating our asses by the time that the commissary and his friends come in to save us.
00:44:04
Speaker
Right.
00:44:05
Speaker
I'm really going to have to go after that one with a fine tooth comb or like load up something previous so I can give her at least a gun or something.
00:44:16
Speaker
Yeah.
00:44:17
Speaker
That's fucking me royally.
00:44:19
Speaker
You might be.
00:44:20
Speaker
Who else is with you?
00:44:23
Speaker
Just our Jenta right now.
00:44:24
Speaker
No, I mean, in the group, who do you, who did you have when you got, when you got kidnapped?
00:44:30
Speaker
Oh, oh, oh, oh, my, my, my spinner.
00:44:40
Speaker
Blood spinner.
00:44:41
Speaker
She, so my two fanatics, my two lady fanatics have joined me.
00:44:45
Speaker
I haven't found her yet.
00:44:48
Speaker
But, yeah.
00:44:49
Speaker
Zabalard with you?
00:44:51
Speaker
No, but they mentioned that he's there.
00:44:53
Speaker
I haven't found him yet.
00:44:54
Speaker
I think I'm going to end up having to back up a few saves just to not fuck myself.

Review of Nine Kings Game

00:45:01
Speaker
There's a couple guys.
00:45:03
Speaker
You should be able to find at least one other person before you take on Snake Man.
00:45:09
Speaker
Okay, that's good to know.
00:45:11
Speaker
It depends on who you have.
00:45:14
Speaker
Adira is already dead, so you don't have her.
00:45:21
Speaker
She's been dead for a while actually.
00:45:23
Speaker
She's been dead for a long time.
00:45:25
Speaker
But Adira is one of the people that are, if you have her with you and Kimura, it is actually harder to get back because of where she is.
00:45:35
Speaker
Oh, okay.
00:45:36
Speaker
Interesting.
00:45:37
Speaker
I believe Abelard and Salamorn are both relatively easy in their locations.
00:45:45
Speaker
Okay.
00:45:48
Speaker
But you don't get, yeah, you can't get everybody back before you attack the snake man.
00:45:54
Speaker
But you get, you can get, you can have at least three people in your party, which makes it a little bit easier to basically stay alive until you get some backup.
00:46:05
Speaker
Okay, all right.
00:46:05
Speaker
I'm definitely going to back it up then and try again.
00:46:09
Speaker
Go try and find some of those folks first because this is impossible.
00:46:13
Speaker
So that's good.
00:46:15
Speaker
I played in the new games development, I played Nine Kings.
00:46:23
Speaker
Okay.
00:46:24
Speaker
Which just came out.
00:46:26
Speaker
It was on Game Pass and it's kind of like a...
00:46:31
Speaker
a CCG strategy kingdom war builder kind of thing with an old fashioned 8-bit even Commodore style.
00:46:41
Speaker
You know what it made me think of?
00:46:42
Speaker
Did you ever play Breach?
00:46:46
Speaker
No, I never played it.
00:46:47
Speaker
I remember it, but I don't know.
00:46:49
Speaker
The faster than light makers.
00:46:51
Speaker
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
00:46:53
Speaker
First off, it's a pretty good game.
00:46:54
Speaker
Oh, Into the Breach.
00:46:56
Speaker
Is it Into the Breach?
00:46:57
Speaker
Oh, yes.
00:46:57
Speaker
Into the Breach.
00:46:58
Speaker
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
00:46:58
Speaker
Yes, I played that.
00:47:00
Speaker
Okay, okay, Into the Breach.
00:47:01
Speaker
It makes me think of that in the strategy sense, and it has just a lot of the similar aesthetic vibe, but you start out as a King Nothing cue the Metallica song, and you...
00:47:17
Speaker
Basically, every turn you have a you have a grid and you can build something or upgrade something based on the cards you draw.
00:47:25
Speaker
And it's very heavily centered around combat because every turn you're going to fight fight off one of the other kings and the other kings have different.
00:47:33
Speaker
You've got the king of the forest and you've got like this infernal king, the king of progress who has like guns and shit.
00:47:40
Speaker
And as you defeat them in battle, you actually start adopting some of their cards.
00:47:47
Speaker
So you start out with a very neutral kind of, you know, paladin and archer based kind of army.
00:47:54
Speaker
And but then I built it up so that I had like boars and thief assassins.
00:48:00
Speaker
I had like I had a goddamn million thieves that would like sneak to the background and like fucking stab people.
00:48:07
Speaker
And it was super fun.
00:48:10
Speaker
It's a really interesting game.
00:48:11
Speaker
It's it's kind of an early access right now.
00:48:14
Speaker
It isn't finished from what I can tell.
00:48:17
Speaker
It's on game pass and I think it's definitely worth the go.
00:48:20
Speaker
This has been truly the year of like these kind of strategy kingdom builder kind of games.
00:48:26
Speaker
Yeah.
00:48:26
Speaker
Like the king is watching.
00:48:28
Speaker
Yeah.
00:48:29
Speaker
So still my favorite of them so far.
00:48:33
Speaker
I still I'm still playing that one.
00:48:36
Speaker
It's it's worth a play.
00:48:38
Speaker
It's it's nine kings worth a look.

Gameplay of Count of Monte Clicker

00:48:42
Speaker
I also started playing the Count of Monte Clicker, which I mentioned last episode, and it's what it says on the tin.
00:48:50
Speaker
It's a clicker game that takes you through the story of the Count of Monte Cristo.
00:48:55
Speaker
I just love the name of the Count.
00:48:58
Speaker
It's kind of genius.
00:49:00
Speaker
It just makes me giggle every time.
00:49:01
Speaker
It's so great.
00:49:03
Speaker
It's hilarious.
00:49:04
Speaker
I want them to do this with other classic literature because it's like, all right, so you get kidnapped and you've got to do- Punchback of Monty Clicker.
00:49:15
Speaker
I mean, come on.
00:49:16
Speaker
Exactly.
00:49:17
Speaker
Exactly.
00:49:18
Speaker
It's a you've got to.
00:49:20
Speaker
So, yeah.
00:49:21
Speaker
So you start out in this prison cell and you have to remove this stone from the floor, which is part of.
00:49:29
Speaker
And so you have like you do in clicker games, you're you're you have different mechanics that are making you stronger, smarter, that sort of thing.
00:49:38
Speaker
And you're just automating it.
00:49:39
Speaker
And finally, eventually you'll pull the stone up and you'll meet the old man next door.
00:49:45
Speaker
and you guys will start working together to dig a hole out of prison.
00:49:49
Speaker
And that involves him educating you.
00:49:52
Speaker
So he's teaching you a bomb making to start with, obviously.
00:49:57
Speaker
And then he's teaching you philosophy and chemistry, and they all have different little mechanics that help you dig deeper and deeper and deeper through the earth of the jail cell until you're finally out.
00:50:11
Speaker
And the game for that one is you've got you've got to
00:50:15
Speaker
You literally are in the center as a bunch of different rocks and like, what do you call it?
00:50:23
Speaker
Obstacles come slowly coming your way and you've got to throw bombs at them.
00:50:27
Speaker
And you can get a musket at a certain point and start shooting them.
00:50:32
Speaker
And you get pickaxes that swirl around your head garlic style.
00:50:35
Speaker
And it's, it's, it's,
00:50:37
Speaker
or Bible style.
00:50:39
Speaker
And it's really funny.
00:50:41
Speaker
And you keep and you'll lose because they'll overwhelm you eventually.
00:50:45
Speaker
And then you go back and you've got some experience and you can upgrade things and you've got some money and you can upgrade things.
00:50:50
Speaker
And I just got through that.
00:50:52
Speaker
It took a surprisingly long amount of time.
00:50:54
Speaker
I'm roughly halfway through.
00:50:56
Speaker
And now I'm swimming.
00:50:57
Speaker
I'm swimming through the ocean and I have to learn from the fish, for example.
00:51:03
Speaker
How are the fish so graceful and click, click, click, click.
00:51:06
Speaker
It's kind of genius.
00:51:09
Speaker
It's really simple and straightforward the way that a lot of clicker games are.
00:51:15
Speaker
It's not it's also not dogmatic to the book.
00:51:19
Speaker
It's very silly.
00:51:20
Speaker
It's having fun with the fact that this is a silly idea, but it is also honestly going through the motions of the Count of Monte Cristo.
00:51:30
Speaker
Like you're actually getting a bit of a story while you're doing this.
00:51:33
Speaker
And I'm just really impressed.
00:51:35
Speaker
This one came kind of out of nowhere for me, and I'm really enjoying it.

System Shock 2 Remaster Experience

00:51:40
Speaker
I think it's totally worth playing.
00:51:42
Speaker
That's great.
00:51:43
Speaker
But yeah, that's me.
00:51:45
Speaker
So Kevin, what are you playing?
00:51:48
Speaker
Okay.
00:51:49
Speaker
So new stuff.
00:51:53
Speaker
I'm playing the System Shock 2 25th anniversary remaster.
00:52:00
Speaker
I realized it was in my library because I guess it came with the System Shock 1 remake that I bought last year.
00:52:08
Speaker
So the remaster just came out this year.
00:52:12
Speaker
So I installed it.
00:52:14
Speaker
It's a good time.
00:52:16
Speaker
It's more... It's a very good remaster.
00:52:24
Speaker
It's a hard game.
00:52:26
Speaker
It's not easy.
00:52:29
Speaker
But it kind of is... You can tell between 1 and 2, it's like they smooth some of the systems out.
00:52:37
Speaker
Yeah.
00:52:40
Speaker
there is some really cool like moments of of terror in the game where like you're just fighting you know fighting enemies or whatever and you just like go around a corner and you see this a guy you see a body just like a guy killed himself just like hanging from the rafters and he's got this like face he's just like oh
00:53:02
Speaker
Jesus.
00:53:03
Speaker
Yeah, it's interesting.
00:53:08
Speaker
But I'm having fun with it.
00:53:10
Speaker
It has a really interesting way of building your character when you start the game.
00:53:16
Speaker
So you are playing somebody who joined, who is a member of the crew of a ship, right?
00:53:26
Speaker
So it's like,
00:53:27
Speaker
It starts out talking about how the ship is launched and it's a big day for all of humanity, yada, yada, yada.
00:53:32
Speaker
And then it goes back four years to your enlistment and you go through like, hey, what branch of the military are you?
00:53:40
Speaker
Are you in the Marines, the Navy or the OSA?
00:53:43
Speaker
and you choose one of that and that kind of chooses your basic archetype and then it's like all right what missions did you go on in the intervening four years did you go on this mission if you go on this mission it means your hacking is up at least this high if you went on this mission you know your weapon skills are up so you choose the next three years of missions uh to kind of like make your character uh and give your character a backstory and then the game starts
00:54:11
Speaker
And I was like, okay, that's kind of cool.
00:54:14
Speaker
That's a cool way of going back and doing it.
00:54:18
Speaker
So System Shock 2 Remastered, another night dive joint.

Rogue Trader Final Boss Fight Challenges

00:54:24
Speaker
Having a lot of fun with it so far.
00:54:26
Speaker
Otherwise, still playing Rogue Trader, much like you are.
00:54:30
Speaker
I am on the other end of Kimura from you.
00:54:33
Speaker
I'm actually in the final boss fight for Kimura.
00:54:37
Speaker
Oh, nice.
00:54:39
Speaker
It's one of those, like, I forgot how bullshit the final boss of Kimura is.
00:54:49
Speaker
Oh, yeah.
00:54:50
Speaker
It's like such a bullshit fight.
00:54:53
Speaker
And I'm like, I'm at a point where I'm just like, you know, I'll fight for a little bit and be like, nope, reloading.
00:55:02
Speaker
Ha ha.
00:55:04
Speaker
yeah you hit you hit a certain wall where you're like there's no point i'm just like i was like it's like oh the person killed uh cabela uh on on the first their first turn and i'm like nope i can't have shut it down shut it down i can't shut it down i need kibbles i need my kibbles
00:55:25
Speaker
No, no.
00:55:27
Speaker
To kill somebody.
00:55:28
Speaker
Because here's the thing is she is she's a weird character in that like she can show you like have a show.
00:55:39
Speaker
You have her attack somebody and it won't do the damage you want or whatever.
00:55:43
Speaker
And like her turns over.
00:55:45
Speaker
Or you get, you do like, all right, Blood Oath, all the things, Pain Resonance, and you do the dance, the Blade Dance, and then you attack and you attack and it's like, oh, you killed that guy.
00:56:03
Speaker
Now I can jump and do the jump attack.
00:56:06
Speaker
And then you like she starts rolling across the battlefield with like this momentum of it's like, boom, she's killed a quarter of the other army.
00:56:15
Speaker
It's nuts.
00:56:17
Speaker
It's very important that it's like one of those things where it's like, all right, so the most useful thing to be doing is she needs to be bleeding.
00:56:26
Speaker
She needs to have a dot of of bleed on her to be her her most effective kibbles.
00:56:34
Speaker
Yes, yes.
00:56:35
Speaker
To be the kibbles we all know she can be.
00:56:37
Speaker
Yes.
00:56:38
Speaker
She has to have a dot of bleed.
00:56:39
Speaker
Sort of like how pyromancer psychers need to be on fire.
00:56:44
Speaker
Yeah, yeah, sure.
00:56:48
Speaker
It's weird, but it's like they have to set themselves on fire.
00:56:50
Speaker
And when they do that, they can unlock some really crazy stuff.
00:56:55
Speaker
Right.
00:56:55
Speaker
Yeah.
00:56:56
Speaker
Yeah.
00:56:57
Speaker
So, yeah, yeah, no, Cabela and Cassia, if either of them get fucked up, I might as well just start the fight over.
00:57:05
Speaker
Yeah.
00:57:06
Speaker
And Cassia is like, so that's the thing is if you have Cassia as a grand strategist, she always goes first.
00:57:15
Speaker
Oh, yeah, that's true.
00:57:17
Speaker
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
00:57:17
Speaker
So if you make her great strategies, yeah, you have her go do the point of interest, which is my favorite thing.
00:57:27
Speaker
It's just like there's like 13 dudes and you point of interest them and suddenly it's like, oh, they're all grouped together now.
00:57:33
Speaker
And now I can hit them all with one attack.
00:57:35
Speaker
Yeah.
00:57:38
Speaker
No, she's, she's the, those two ladies I need, uh, uh, on my side at all times.
00:57:44
Speaker
At all times.
00:57:45
Speaker
Yeah.
00:57:46
Speaker
Um, yeah.
00:57:47
Speaker
And Cassia, yeah.
00:57:49
Speaker
Cassia stays.
00:57:50
Speaker
Cassia and Kibbles are both dogmatic.
00:57:53
Speaker
Um, yeah.
00:57:55
Speaker
But I'm doing I'm doing pretty good with with dogmatic so far.
00:57:59
Speaker
I've still got don't get me wrong.
00:58:01
Speaker
I've got a fair amount of iconoclast in there because it's just a man.
00:58:04
Speaker
But sure.
00:58:05
Speaker
But yeah, I'm feeling good.
00:58:08
Speaker
Yeah, I'm feeling ready for a space wolf.
00:58:11
Speaker
You're feeling ready for for all far.
00:58:12
Speaker
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
00:58:14
Speaker
I'm looking forward to meeting him.
00:58:15
Speaker
Yeah.
00:58:17
Speaker
My.
00:58:19
Speaker
advice is have a save before you talk like have a save before you talk to him because there there is uh and i'm only it um it's not a spoiler you can lose him if you choose the wrong dialogue options
00:58:38
Speaker
Yeah, that makes sense.
00:58:39
Speaker
He'll basically tell you to fuck yourself.
00:58:42
Speaker
Which I love about this game.
00:58:44
Speaker
I've talked about it before.
00:58:45
Speaker
Like, they will let you fail.
00:58:47
Speaker
They absolutely will let you fail.
00:58:49
Speaker
And it's like, you can't get all far now.
00:58:52
Speaker
Yeah.
00:58:53
Speaker
Too bad.
00:58:53
Speaker
I think that's terrific.
00:58:55
Speaker
So, yeah.
00:58:56
Speaker
Do you still have Jay?
00:58:58
Speaker
Yes, and she's another one that I really like.
00:59:01
Speaker
Just the rapid fire shooting.
00:59:03
Speaker
Oh yeah, the dual pistols with her little toxic guns.
00:59:07
Speaker
Oh, it's so good.
00:59:09
Speaker
And now they're killing Dracari.
00:59:10
Speaker
She can pick up some airship.
00:59:12
Speaker
She's like, you're dogmatic, but you're like, I'm going to keep this heretical pirate with me.
00:59:20
Speaker
I'm flexible when I'm with her.
00:59:22
Speaker
Just because I mean...
00:59:25
Speaker
No one slings a gun like that bitch.
00:59:27
Speaker
So yeah, we're gonna cut her a little slack.
00:59:33
Speaker
Yeah, she's badass.

Conclusion and Social Media Invitation

00:59:34
Speaker
Yeah, her double pistolling and her, because I think she comes with full, like the dual weapon thing already maxed out.
00:59:44
Speaker
Yeah, she's fully equipped.
00:59:47
Speaker
Not to mention with Aldari weapons and Dracari weapons.
00:59:50
Speaker
Yes, because she's a cold trader, she knows how to use any weapon.
00:59:55
Speaker
Exactly.
00:59:56
Speaker
So it's fucking excellent.
00:59:59
Speaker
We kill a bunch of these witches and gladiators and stuff like that.
01:00:03
Speaker
And it's like, oh, what's this gun?
01:00:04
Speaker
You can just pick them up.
01:00:06
Speaker
It's like, I can use this gun.
01:00:07
Speaker
Yeah, let's give that one a twirl.
01:00:10
Speaker
And it's always fun.
01:00:11
Speaker
It's always fun.
01:00:12
Speaker
It's always fun.
01:00:13
Speaker
It's always fun, Shereen.
01:00:19
Speaker
Her accent is, so I looked it up and the accent that she's doing, the voice actor is doing, is like nestled somewhere between Persian and Irish.
01:00:30
Speaker
That's interesting.
01:00:31
Speaker
Yeah.
01:00:32
Speaker
Yeah.
01:00:33
Speaker
Like some words, some words are Irish, some word and others are Persian.
01:00:37
Speaker
And I was like, this is an interesting accent.
01:00:40
Speaker
That's a hell of a combo.
01:00:41
Speaker
That's really interesting.
01:00:42
Speaker
I like it.
01:00:44
Speaker
I like it.
01:00:45
Speaker
Oh, gosh.
01:00:47
Speaker
Um,
01:00:48
Speaker
So that'll do it for tonight's episode.
01:00:50
Speaker
Thank you all so much for listening.
01:00:53
Speaker

01:01:10
Speaker
So, Phil, I have been planning this trip to Silent Hill for months now.
01:01:22
Speaker
I got a letter in the mail from somebody that I used to know.
01:01:30
Speaker
After reading this book, I'm not sure.
01:01:33
Speaker
Do you think I should go?
01:01:36
Speaker
I know what your instincts are, but I'm going to say yes.
01:01:40
Speaker
And there is one main reason, and it's the pyramid heads took us.
01:01:49
Speaker
And because, and this is, I don't know, I know this from hearsay only.
01:01:54
Speaker
I haven't experienced this myself.
01:01:55
Speaker
Well, he's caked up three ways to Sunday.
01:01:58
Speaker
He's got cake galore.
01:02:00
Speaker
And that's the thing.
01:02:01
Speaker
I have been told, you know, when you go to certain European towns and they've got the statue and the bronze is really shiny where people touch for good luck, usually a tit, let's be real.
01:02:13
Speaker
It works in a similar way with Pyramid Head.
01:02:16
Speaker
If you can sneak up on him, just be real quiet and give it a touch, his butt will look like
