Book Synopsis

"Zombies. Mutant animals. Bioengineered weapons and surgically enhanced monsters. Secret labs and widespread conspiracies. It seemed impossible, but Jill Valentine and her teammates among the S.T.A.R.S. had seen it all firsthand when the Umbrella Corporation turned Raccoon City into a staging ground for the most insidious genetic experiments ever conceived. After all she's been through, Valentine is ready to leave that remote mountain community forever.

But Umbrella isn't finished with Raccoon City.

Too much evidence of their unethical and immoral research still exists. It must be recovered or destroyed -- and quickly -- before it can be traced back to Umbrella. And with William Birkin's mutagenic virus already spreading through the city like wildfire, drastic measures are needed. Under cover of night, mercenary teams have entered the city, along with something else -- Umbrella's failsafe: an evolved version of its Tyrant-class killing machines, a lethal creature code-named Nemesis. Now Nemesis is on the hunt. And Jill Valentine is about to become prey."

00:00:03
Speaker
You know, it is the time and place.
00:00:05
Speaker
What's that?
00:00:06
Speaker
Hey there, everybody.
00:00:07
Speaker
Welcome back.
00:00:09
Speaker
I fucked it up.
00:00:13
Speaker

00:00:14

00:00:19

00:00:23
Speaker
Everyone, you know who else is due one?
00:00:25
Speaker
Who's that?

Resident Evil Nemesis Overview

00:00:27
Speaker
Hey there, everybody.
00:00:27
Speaker
Welcome back to the Pixlr Podcast.
00:00:29
Speaker
My name is Kevin.
00:00:30
Speaker
With me, as always, is Phil.
00:00:31
Speaker
And on today's show, we are starting Resident Evil Nemesis.
00:00:36
Speaker
That is book five in the Resident Evil S.D.
00:00:41
Speaker
Perry series.
00:00:44
Speaker
Look at that.
00:00:44
Speaker
You got it right there.

Discussion on Book Covers

00:00:46
Speaker
I've been making a point.
00:00:47
Speaker
They did updated covers, like the very slick, cool, black and red kind of cover.
00:00:51
Speaker
I've been making a point of getting...
00:00:54
Speaker
the original terrible computer graphics.
00:00:57
Speaker
Just the absolute worst.
00:01:00
Speaker
Like, oh, back when back when that that screenshot would have been accompanied by a a caption in Game Informer that says, look at these graphics or something.
00:01:13
Speaker
Right, exactly.

Kindle PDF Availability Issues

00:01:15
Speaker
I forget which one.
00:01:16
Speaker
I think it was a Final Fantasy game and that was on the cover of GamePro or some damn thing.
00:01:20
Speaker
And the caption was
00:01:22
Speaker
Believe it or not, this is a game.
00:01:24
Speaker
And it blew our fucking minds apart at the time.
00:01:29
Speaker
I'm guessing it's not quite as impressive these days.
00:01:34
Speaker
No, but I still appreciate it all the same.
00:01:39
Speaker
You know what's funny about these books is that they were randomly available in Kindle PDF formats at different times.
00:01:50
Speaker
I found a PDF of the book, but they're not anymore.
00:01:56
Speaker
But well, two of them are.
00:01:57
Speaker
It's like number two and number six are available for Kindle and none of the rest of them are.
00:02:03
Speaker
And it's weird.
00:02:04
Speaker
It is weird.

00:02:06
Speaker

00:02:26
Speaker
Supporting us for free gets us our love for free.
00:02:29

It also gives you free dad hugs, which is my... Look at this.
00:02:34
Speaker
Aww.
00:02:34
Speaker
I got a shirt.
00:02:35
Speaker
That's wonderful.
00:02:36
Speaker
I love that.
00:02:37
Speaker
I got to get one of those.
00:02:38
Speaker
I can wear one of those.
00:02:40
Speaker
You can wear one of those.
00:02:41
Speaker
With impunity.
00:02:42
Speaker
You are a dad.
00:02:43
Speaker
I'm a dad, goddammit.
00:02:44
Speaker
I can totally do that.
00:02:46
Speaker
You are a dad and Pride Month is honestly, for being straight, that is one of your favorite months.

00:03:25
Speaker
And friendly friend, thank you for being a friend.
00:03:28
Speaker
Patreon.com slash PixelitPod.
00:03:30
Speaker
Do it.
00:03:32
Speaker
Today.
00:03:33
Speaker
So, yeah.
00:03:36
Speaker
We know what the deal

Resident Evil 3 Development History

00:03:37
Speaker
is.
00:03:37
Speaker
This book is based on Nemesis, which is Resident Evil 3.
00:03:42
Speaker
Some fun facts about Resident Evil 3.
00:03:44
Speaker
Nemesis.
00:03:46
Speaker
One.
00:03:47
Speaker
Actually, if you want to know a lot about it, Monty Zander literally just dropped a video.
00:03:52
Speaker
Oh, yeah!
00:03:53
Speaker
A two-hour video.
00:03:56
Speaker
That's right.
00:03:56
Speaker
We didn't do that on purpose either.
00:03:58
Speaker
We didn't do it on purpose.
00:04:00
Speaker
But he literally just dropped.
00:04:04
Speaker
Woo!
00:04:05
Speaker
Yeah, I got it.
00:04:06
Speaker
I got it.
00:04:07
Speaker
So there was a there's somebody doing some sort of gardening outside with one of the with like gasoline powered stuff.
00:04:16
Speaker
And I went outside and I took a big whiff.
00:04:19
Speaker
I was like letting the dogs out.
00:04:20
Speaker
And since then, I've just had this cough sitting in my lungs and I don't know what the deal is.
00:04:27
Speaker
Just the that diesel gasoline fumes just got in there.
00:04:31
Speaker
Didn't get them out anyway.
00:04:33
Speaker
As I was saying, Monty Xander just dropped a two-hour video on Resident Evil 3.
00:04:38
Speaker
It's a critique of the remake for the most part, but he gets into the whole of it.
00:04:45
Speaker
Like, where did Resident Evil 3 come from?
00:04:48
Speaker
And all that stuff.
00:04:49
Speaker
It started as a spinoff.
00:04:52
Speaker
It was not supposed to be number three.
00:04:54
Speaker
There was a whole bunch of shenanigans.
00:04:56
Speaker
I actually did a video on it like 10 years ago.
00:04:58
Speaker
Nice.
00:05:02
Speaker
But yeah, a whole bunch of shenanigans there where it was supposed to be a spinoff and then it became number three and then there was Code Veronica and then all that stuff.

Leon Kennedy vs. Leonardo DiCaprio

00:05:13
Speaker
And it had to do with the there was Resident Evil 4 as well being pushed back and then becoming Devil May Cry.
00:05:20
Speaker
It like.
00:05:21
Speaker
There's a lot of like renaming shenanigans that happened between three Code Veronica and four in Resident Evil.
00:05:30
Speaker
And then it then like split off.
00:05:35
Speaker
We got a whole nother franchise and Devil May Cry popped out of that.
00:05:38
Speaker
So exactly.
00:05:40
Speaker
And everyone's happy about it, too.
00:05:42
Speaker
Everybody's happy about that.
00:05:44
Speaker
Dante's happy.
00:05:46
Speaker
Virgil is happy.
00:05:47
Speaker
Leon Kennedy.
00:05:50
Speaker
Leon's real happy.
00:05:51
Speaker
He's real happy.
00:05:54
Speaker
Yeah.
00:05:54
Speaker
Too happy.
00:05:55
Speaker
Too happy.
00:05:56
Speaker
What's his deal?
00:05:57
Speaker
I don't know.
00:05:58
Speaker
I don't know.
00:05:59
Speaker
Maybe it's just that he knows that he was based on Leonardo DiCaprio and he's smug.
00:06:04
Speaker
You know what I mean?
00:06:05
Speaker
Really smugging it up.
00:06:07
Speaker
Smug son of a bitch.
00:06:08
Speaker
Smug zombie killing bastard.
00:06:13
Speaker
If I'm going to be honest, Leon Kennedy, I think is hotter than Leonardo DiCaprio.
00:06:21
Speaker
Oh, OK, explain, please.
00:06:22
Speaker
OK, I'm intrigued.
00:06:24
Speaker
Leonardo DiCaprio, what didn't doesn't register to me on the hotness scale until sometime after Titanic.
00:06:34
Speaker
Sure.
00:06:34
Speaker
He had to bulk up a little bit.
00:06:37
Speaker
He had to bulk up, get a little age on him.
00:06:41
Speaker
Titanic Leo is like, he's too boyish, you know?
00:06:46
Speaker
Oh, God, yes.
00:06:47
Speaker
Too skinny.
00:06:48
Speaker
You get Leo in The Departed.
00:06:50
Speaker
Now there's a Leo right there.
00:06:52
Speaker
Oh, big time.
00:06:53
Speaker
Yeah, that's a good one.
00:06:54
Speaker
That's a very good one.
00:06:55
Speaker
That's a good one right there.
00:06:56
Speaker
If you gotta go with a Leo...
00:07:04
Speaker
Sorry, my wife is looking for the baby monitor.
00:07:07
Speaker
I thought you were going to say my wife is looking for the baby.
00:07:10
Speaker
She's looking for the baby.
00:07:11
Speaker
We have no idea.
00:07:12
Speaker
It does happen every now and then that we lose the baby.
00:07:15
Speaker
But for never more than like 20, 25 minutes.
00:07:19
Speaker
It's fine.

Nostalgic Childhood Memories

00:07:22
Speaker
You know what?
00:07:23
Speaker
We're old school parents.
00:07:24
Speaker
We like to.
00:07:25
Speaker
It's summertime.
00:07:26
Speaker
The kid's not in school.
00:07:27
Speaker
We just put them outside in the morning.
00:07:29
Speaker
And when we trust it'll come home at dinnertime.
00:07:32
Speaker
Yeah.
00:07:32
Speaker
Let them have fun.
00:07:33
Speaker
He's 18 months old, but you know, that's.
00:07:35
Speaker
Yeah.
00:07:37
Speaker
I will say on the way home from work last week, I saw a trio of boys on bicycles and they must have been 12, maybe 13.
00:07:46
Speaker
Those kids were getting up to shenanigans.
00:07:48
Speaker
I was just so happy to see it.
00:07:51
Speaker
Like, you just don't see that much anymore.
00:07:55
Speaker
It's enough that it actually takes you off guard when you notice it.
00:07:58
Speaker
Yeah.
00:07:58
Speaker
You know, and I was just like, oh, good for you kids.
00:08:01
Speaker
Like, good.
00:08:01
Speaker
And you know what?
00:08:02
Speaker
And good for your parents.
00:08:03
Speaker
Yeah.
00:08:03
Speaker
More than anything else.
00:08:04
Speaker
They're going out into the woods to find a porno mag that is.
00:08:08
Speaker
Probably.
00:08:09
Speaker
Buried under.
00:08:09
Speaker
Waterlogged as shit.
00:08:11
Speaker
Yeah.
00:08:11
Speaker
Buried under a rock, but it's been passed down from older brother to younger brother for generations.
00:08:18
Speaker
Yeah.
00:08:20
Speaker
No one talks about it.
00:08:21
Speaker
No one thinks too hard about touching it with your fingers.
00:08:25
Speaker
Yeah.
00:08:26
Speaker
You just try to move on from there.
00:08:29
Speaker
That's the best thing, really.
00:08:31
Speaker
Yeah, it's the best thing.

S.D. Perry and Adaptation Process

00:08:32
Speaker
This book, written by S.D.
00:08:34
Speaker
Perry.
00:08:35
Speaker
Listen, this is our 50th S.D.
00:08:38
Speaker
Perry book, so I don't think we need it.
00:08:40
Speaker
I know, right?
00:08:40
Speaker
Yes.
00:08:43
Speaker
You know what I just found out though?
00:08:44
Speaker
Yeah, we're not going to get into her whole bio, but I don't know if I mentioned this any of the last times.
00:08:49
Speaker
I certainly don't remember.
00:08:50
Speaker
She wrote the novelization for the Uncharted movie.
00:08:55
Speaker
Oh.
00:08:56
Speaker
That's like five layers deep.
00:08:59
Speaker
Right.
00:09:00
Speaker
It's a copy of a copy of a copy.
00:09:03
Speaker
Fascinating stuff.
00:09:04
Speaker
So we might have to come back, come to that eventually.
00:09:07
Speaker
We'll have to dig into that.
00:09:09
Speaker
I feel like that's a level of adaptation that I would like to peek into.
00:09:15
Speaker
And it has an audio book that's narrated by Nolan North.
00:09:19
Speaker
Oh!
00:09:20
Speaker
Okay.
00:09:21
Speaker
Yeah.
00:09:21
Speaker
Perfect.
00:09:22
Speaker
So Nolan North doing a Tom Holland impression, doing a Nolan North impression?
00:09:28
Speaker
Pretty much.
00:09:28
Speaker
I have to assume that that's what we're dealing with.
00:09:31
Speaker
Yes.
00:09:35
Speaker
It's recursive.
00:09:37
Speaker
Yeah.
00:09:37
Speaker
Yeah.
00:09:39
Speaker
copy of a copy of a copy it's beautiful it's multiplicity you know everything comes back to michael keaton's multiplicity which yeah we never really realized was going to be this important to uh our worlds
00:09:55
Speaker
I'm still gobsmacked that that is a valid reference with people.
00:10:00
Speaker
I remember watching that when it came out in the theaters and even at that young an age, I was like, this is the last time ever going to need to worry about this movie.
00:10:09
Speaker
But people reference that movie a lot.
00:10:12
Speaker
It was it was notably not well reviewed when it came out.
00:10:18
Speaker
Right.
00:10:18
Speaker
Right.
00:10:19
Speaker
Exactly.
00:10:19
Speaker
It's like, what was the
00:10:23
Speaker
We just watched it.
00:10:24
Speaker
What was the the movie about the guy who keeps getting resurrected?
00:10:29
Speaker
The science fiction film that came out recently.
00:10:32
Speaker
Oh, recently.
00:10:33
Speaker
I was thinking about something 17.
00:10:34
Speaker
Mickey 17.
00:10:35
Speaker
That's it.
00:10:35
Speaker
Yes.
00:10:37
Speaker
Mickey 17.
00:10:37
Speaker
We watched that.
00:10:42
Speaker
the other night.
00:10:43
Speaker
And I thought of Multiplicity several times.
00:10:47
Speaker
There was absolutely no way that the person who wrote this didn't at one point think about Multiplicity while they were writing it.
00:10:56
Speaker
There's no way.
00:10:57
Speaker
Yeah, and it was, what's his name?
00:10:58
Speaker
It was the guy from Parasite.
00:11:07
Speaker
Yes, yes.
00:11:10
Speaker
I'm going to argue it's not his best work.
00:11:13
Speaker
It's definitely not his best work.
00:11:15
Speaker
I mean, you know, you got Snowpiercer and Parasite are pretty far up there.
00:11:23
Speaker
And even The Host is actually a fun movie.
00:11:27
Speaker
I have to watch The Host.
00:11:29
Speaker
I keep...
00:11:32
Speaker
I know what it's about and everything like that.
00:11:33
Speaker
And it's one of those things where it's like, I should be watching this.
00:11:36
Speaker
I would enjoy this.
00:11:37
Speaker
Right.
00:11:37
Speaker
Like, yeah.
00:11:38
Speaker
Sea monster fun.
00:11:39
Speaker
Like, come on.
00:11:40
Speaker
That sounds like something.
00:11:41
Speaker
Yeah.
00:11:41
Speaker
Yeah.

Critique of Mickey 17

00:11:43
Speaker
I mean, the title is a little weird for what, what it is.
00:11:45
Speaker
It's, um,
00:11:47
Speaker
But yeah, now Mickey 17 is definitely a movie with there's a lot of fat on that movie.
00:11:55
Speaker
Oh, yeah.
00:11:56
Speaker
Yeah.
00:11:56
Speaker
That was way too long.
00:11:58
Speaker
I it's like I look back thinking I think of it fondly after watching it while watching it.
00:12:05
Speaker
It's like, oh, this is long.
00:12:06
Speaker
But then I remember the individual like some of the things that I would cut.
00:12:11
Speaker
I still enjoy in retrospect, like
00:12:16
Speaker
Does that make sense?
00:12:16
Speaker
It's like on their own.
00:12:19
Speaker
They're like fun scenes.
00:12:20
Speaker
But yeah, when you put them all together, frankly, the last 10 minutes, that last little bit at the end that he dreams where he is dreaming up the wife coming back to life.
00:12:34
Speaker
And yeah, like her obsession with turning alien life forms into sauces.
00:12:40
Speaker
Which and that whole there were so many pieces of it that on their own, just like you said, on their own, should have could have worked in some other format or or some other thing.
00:12:54
Speaker
But for whatever reason, in my opinion, so many of them just didn't work when you put them all together.
00:12:59
Speaker
Mickey 17 to me seems like a movie that could have been just like, all right, develop it a little bit longer and turn it into a five part limited series.
00:13:13
Speaker
Sure.
00:13:14
Speaker
Absolutely.
00:13:14
Speaker
I think that would have been.
00:13:16
Speaker
I think that would have.
00:13:17
Speaker
Yeah, exactly.
00:13:18
Speaker
I think you've given a little bit more space to breathe instead of.
00:13:22
Speaker
Because it was kind of in an awkward in-between state of like.
00:13:25
Speaker
It really was.
00:13:25
Speaker
I feel like there's more plot lines here than we're, and they're not all getting what they deserve.
00:13:31
Speaker
No, none of them did

Disappointment with Gilmore Girls Follow-up

00:13:33
Speaker
as a result.
00:13:33
Speaker
You're absolutely right.
00:13:34
Speaker
And it shows.
00:13:37
Speaker
I think you're right.
00:13:37
Speaker
Like even a three or four episode thing where you could just expand on the world a little bit more and boom, you got a much better piece of work.
00:13:46
Speaker
there four four episodes just like uh widely ignored gilmore girls follow up uh a year in the life we do not talk about a year we do not we do not talk about that uh no that was a that was that was a mistake uh on so many different levels i've never been more disappointed and i don't think we're getting any more gilmore girls so
00:14:10
Speaker
No, I hope not.
00:14:11
Speaker
And I love that show and I hope not.
00:14:14
Speaker
So yeah, we leave it.
00:14:15
Speaker
We just leave that thing the fuck alone.
00:14:17
Speaker
How about that?
00:14:17
Speaker
Let's leave the girls alone.
00:14:19
Speaker
Yeah, leave them alone.
00:14:20
Speaker
Leave them in their little white people world.
00:14:24
Speaker
Milo Ventimiglia has too many other things.
00:14:26
Speaker
He's got a Call of Duty to work on.
00:14:30
Speaker
Who saw him being the big winner from that franchise?
00:14:34
Speaker
That dude works.
00:14:36
Speaker
It's really impressive.
00:14:39
Speaker
Yeah, it is.
00:14:42
Speaker
But you know what?
00:14:42
Speaker
Let's go ahead and put Mickey 17's body in the marsh.
00:14:45
Speaker
Let's do.
00:14:46
Speaker
Let's do.
00:14:46
Speaker
We'll just replace him later.
00:14:47
Speaker
No big thing.
00:14:48
Speaker
When I tell you to dump a body in the marsh, you dump them.
00:14:55
Speaker
In the mind.
00:14:57
Speaker
Clone them up later.
00:14:57
Speaker
All right.
00:15:00
Speaker
So the book starts with a prologue from Carlos's point of view.
00:15:05
Speaker
Carlos Oliveira.
00:15:07
Speaker
He's a former mercenary.
00:15:08
Speaker
He's from where do they say he's from?
00:15:11
Speaker
Is it Ecuador or Nicaragua?
00:15:14
Speaker
I think it was Nicaragua.
00:15:16
Speaker
OK, he was.
00:15:17
Speaker
Anyway, he was a mercenary down there.
00:15:20
Speaker
And, you know, he's done some stuff.
00:15:24
Speaker
He's seen some things.
00:15:25
Speaker
He's seen some things, but he's working for a group called the UBCS now, which is the Umbrella Corporation.
00:15:34
Speaker
Why didn't I write down what the acronym stands for?
00:15:38
Speaker
Umbrella Corporation.
00:15:39
Speaker
Umbrella Biopause.
00:15:41
Speaker
chemical suppression something like that anyway it's he works for umbrella he's for working for umbrellas police basically and he's called by his boss mitch harami and maybe you know do you where do what have i heard the name harami from before i thought the same thing i'm not i i i also was uh
00:16:06
Speaker
it made me think of something um but i don't know what it is when i type in harami and look it up it doesn't nothing specifically comes up it's it's it seems that it's pretty common um yeah it's uh it's apparently it's a sushi term um it's like
00:16:24
Speaker
Yeah, it's a type of sushi you can get.
00:16:28
Speaker
And apparently it's also an Indian name.
00:16:30
Speaker
So they're all kinds of things.
00:16:33
Speaker
Apparently it's pretty commonly used as like a restaurant name or something like that.
00:16:39
Speaker
Weird.
00:16:40
Speaker
Yeah.
00:16:41
Speaker
Yeah.
00:16:41
Speaker
But I'm glad you said that because I had a very similar feeling.
00:16:45
Speaker
I was like, wait, what are we...
00:16:47
Speaker
That sounds like something we should know.
00:16:49
Speaker
It sounds like I can hear.
00:16:53
Speaker
Why can I hear Brad Pitt's character from Inglourious Bastards saying it in my head?
00:16:59
Speaker
Harami.
00:16:59
Speaker
Harami.
00:17:00
Speaker
Harami.
00:17:03
Speaker
Anyway, Mitch Harami calls him.
00:17:05
Speaker
He's like, there's a there's something going on in Raccoon City.
00:17:08
Speaker
There's a chemical spill and people are acting funky.
00:17:12
Speaker
We got to get going.

Carlos Oliveira's Backstory

00:17:13
Speaker
And Carlos is like, all right, let's go.
00:17:18
Speaker
He's walking over to the field office to get to the briefing and he runs into our old friend.
00:17:25
Speaker
Trent.
00:17:26
Speaker
He's oh, Trent, the man, the myth, the legend, Trent.
00:17:29
Speaker
Yeah.
00:17:30
Speaker
My favorite like character created for this book, whole cloth.
00:17:37
Speaker
He's like, and by the way, real quick, is this the first time before the book even starts?
00:17:42
Speaker
Is this the first time that S.D.
00:17:45
Speaker
Perry addresses the fact that she was working with
00:17:51
Speaker
She has a quick forward.
00:17:52
Speaker
She's like, you know, I was writing this before the game came out and this thing and that thing.
00:17:56
Speaker
And so so I there were liberties taken.
00:17:59
Speaker
And so just just roll with it.
00:18:02
Speaker
Yeah.
00:18:02
Speaker
Is that the first time she's done that in these?
00:18:04
Speaker
And I just I honestly.
00:18:05
Speaker
I didn't I didn't see the forward.
00:18:07
Speaker
So I assume so, though, I think I think almost everything else has been a post game release or like game is golden or something like that.
00:18:16
Speaker
Yeah.
00:18:17
Speaker
Type of effort.
00:18:17
Speaker
This is the first one that where she was like, the game is and it makes sense if the game was kind of.
00:18:27
Speaker
Because the other I remember in one of the other games, Jill, in one of the other books, she had written that Jill was like already out of town or something like that.
00:18:37
Speaker
Yeah.
00:18:37
Speaker
And she just has to kind of more or less just write that Jill's back in town or something like

Jill Valentine and Raccoon City Apocalypse

00:18:44
Speaker
that.
00:18:44
Speaker
Just work her back in.
00:18:46
Speaker
Because like, why is Jill still in town?
00:18:48
Speaker
But ever, but everybody else left.
00:18:50
Speaker
Like, why would that make sense?
00:18:52
Speaker
Yeah.
00:18:53
Speaker
She's like, she's back.
00:18:54
Speaker
She's back.
00:18:55
Speaker
She's in town.
00:18:56
Speaker
She's in town.
00:18:57
Speaker
It's fine.
00:18:57
Speaker
It's fine.
00:18:58
Speaker
It's fine.
00:18:59
Speaker
Anyway, we'll get to chapter one.
00:19:01
Speaker
Jill is being haunted by a recurring nightmare of the tyrant attack from the mansion.
00:19:08
Speaker
Basically, they're firing their guns at it.
00:19:10
Speaker
Nothing's working.
00:19:12
Speaker
And eventually she she's like running away and it's just like the tyrants after her.
00:19:18
Speaker
And then she wakes up and we kind of get a whole rundown of she is she's basically just sleeping through the raccoon city apocalypse.
00:19:28
Speaker
Right.
00:19:29
Speaker
Yeah.
00:19:29
Speaker
Raccoon City has already fallen apart.
00:19:31
Speaker
Jill is just kind of hanging out in her apartment, just taking a nap because she's been going around the city, you know, trying to find people.
00:19:43
Speaker
But yeah, it's it's not working.
00:19:45
Speaker
So for a while after the event in the mansion, the stars team have been warning about umbrella secret labs, the authorities, the media, they were all dismissing them.
00:19:58
Speaker
But that's mostly because of umbrella being able to bribe literally everyone.
00:20:04
Speaker
And I think at this point they mentioned that, uh,
00:20:07
Speaker
They just bring up Brian Irons having had a one like a rape conviction just kind of papered over.
00:20:15
Speaker
Yeah.
00:20:16
Speaker
Yeah.
00:20:17
Speaker
At this point.
00:20:18
Speaker
Yeah.
00:20:18
Speaker
They threw that in there.
00:20:20
Speaker
It's like, oh, Jesus.
00:20:20
Speaker
Jesus Christ.
00:20:22
Speaker
Which I think is part of Resident Evil 2 is like you find out like Brian Irons is a fucked up dude.
00:20:29
Speaker
Oh, sure.
00:20:29
Speaker
Sure.
00:20:30
Speaker
It's yeah.
00:20:31
Speaker
It's just not immediately where you think.
00:20:32
Speaker
Yeah.
00:20:34
Speaker
Your horror is going to go in this particular franchise.
00:20:37
Speaker
Right.
00:20:38
Speaker
The stars team gets disbanded and Chris heads to Europe to investigate Umbrella's headquarters.
00:20:45
Speaker
And then so five days before the book had started, that's when the outbreak had began.
00:20:50
Speaker
And the Raccoon City Police Department had blockaded the city.
00:20:55
Speaker
Jill was trying to get help, but the police force was annihilated by September 28th.

Disturbing High School Scene

00:21:00
Speaker
And after after a failed attempt to save civilians at a high school, which is just grotesque.
00:21:09
Speaker
Oh, yeah.
00:21:09
Speaker
Yeah.
00:21:10
Speaker
Just like she goes.
00:21:12
Speaker
It's like basically SD rates, writes that Jill enters the high school and there's just dead bodies and blood and shit, literal shit everywhere.
00:21:24
Speaker
Just like pretty horrific.
00:21:25
Speaker
It's pretty horrific.
00:21:27
Speaker
Um, so that's when Jill is like, I'm just going to go and take a nap.
00:21:32
Speaker
Yeah.
00:21:32
Speaker
I think I'm just going to, I think I'm going to have a couple of shots and I will and, uh, wake up when I wake up.
00:21:38
Speaker
Yeah.
00:21:39
Speaker
Uh, chapter two, uh, we start from the point of view of Nikolai, Jinofaev, you know, whatever Nikolai, uh, Nikolai.

Nikolai's Ruthlessness

00:21:49
Speaker
Yeah.
00:21:49
Speaker
Yeah.
00:21:50
Speaker
He is he's a he's not a good dude.
00:21:54
Speaker
No, he hates everyone.
00:21:56
Speaker
He hates his peers.
00:21:57
Speaker
He hates his superiors, including a guy named.
00:22:03
Speaker
What's the other guy's name?
00:22:05
Speaker
There's Nikolai and there is the other Russian guy.
00:22:11
Speaker
Fuck it.
00:22:12
Speaker
Yeah, there are two Russians.
00:22:13
Speaker
There's two Russian guys.
00:22:14
Speaker
You think Russians would just get along.
00:22:17
Speaker
I guess you would think.
00:22:18
Speaker
Historically, they're known for that.
00:22:21
Speaker
Absolutely.
00:22:23
Speaker
Their togetherness.
00:22:25
Speaker
Nikolai is part of something called Operation Watchdog, which there is like eight watchdogs spread out throughout Umbrella's recovery operation.
00:22:39
Speaker
So there's a guy in UBCS.
00:22:41
Speaker
That's Nikolai.
00:22:42
Speaker
There's a couple of scientists.
00:22:43
Speaker
There's like a there's like a cop that's involved.
00:22:47
Speaker
And each person is responsible for gathering data of the Raccoon City incident and bringing it back to
00:22:54
Speaker
to umbrella Nikolai is like all right well if I kill all the other watchdogs and take their stuff then I'm gonna have all the leverage in getting paid more so which is good sure yeah fair enough that's good for Nikolai he probably should not have been told that there were other watchdogs what the fuck like yeah just don't don't that's that you're asking for trouble like serious trouble with that shit
00:23:23
Speaker
given his issues.
00:23:25
Speaker
Um, meanwhile, Carlos is, uh, preoccupied with Trent's bizarre warnings and he's, and he's was told by Trent to meet at grill 13 at 7 PM, uh, to find out more.
00:23:40
Speaker
Um, and then, uh, they, uh, the,
00:23:45
Speaker
Carlos is like, I don't want to.
00:23:46
Speaker
I'm not I'm not a fan of this.
00:23:48
Speaker
I don't like going in blind.

Jill's Dramatic Escape

00:23:50
Speaker
And then he looks at Nikolai and Nikolai is like sitting there with a shark like grin, like just be just being a lunatic.
00:23:59
Speaker
Chapter three.
00:24:02
Speaker
Jill is trying to just get out of Raccoon City at this point.
00:24:05
Speaker
She's going through the side streets and buildings.
00:24:08
Speaker
She is.
00:24:09
Speaker
decided that going through buildings actually makes the most sense because she's not like out in the open where all the zombies can see her.
00:24:20
Speaker
She runs into a building, an apartment building, is trying to cut through when she notices that there's a gas leak.
00:24:28
Speaker
And suddenly there's a whole bunch of zombies as she ends up getting surrounded by the zombies.
00:24:35
Speaker
She's like, fuck it.
00:24:36
Speaker
She shoots one of them, sets off the gas leak and she is tossed from the building.
00:24:41
Speaker
This is actually where the game starts.
00:24:45
Speaker
Right.
00:24:46
Speaker
The game starts with Jill being thrown from this this apartment building and onto the street.
00:24:53
Speaker
Um, she, uh, she continues on and she finds, uh, she goes into a warehouse and she finds a guy who is another survivor and he, she's like, come on, we got to get out of here.

Survivor's Dilemma in Warehouse

00:25:06
Speaker
Come on guy.
00:25:08
Speaker
And he's like, yeah, with the, with the, uh, you just imagine the hand animation in the game of like, yeah, yeah.
00:25:17
Speaker
He is not a fan of of her.
00:25:21
Speaker
He wants to get his daughter and he's like, fuck you.
00:25:26
Speaker
And he locks himself into the trailer, the tractor trailer, the trailer of a of a truck and is like, get out of here.
00:25:38
Speaker
Go fuck yourself.
00:25:39
Speaker
And she's like, all right.
00:25:42
Speaker
Bye, I guess.
00:25:43
Speaker
OK, I guess.
00:25:45
Speaker
By the way, I didn't know that those locked from the inside.
00:25:49
Speaker
Do they?
00:25:50
Speaker
I don't think that's a thing.
00:25:53
Speaker
I wouldn't know.
00:25:53
Speaker
Yeah, I'm not sure about that either.
00:25:56
Speaker
Yeah.
00:25:57
Speaker
For the purposes of this adventure.
00:26:00
Speaker
They do.
00:26:02
Speaker
So she realizes that she's going to need a bigger gun and she is going to go to the bar Jack, which she remembers has a shotgun on display, which is literally the plot of what's it?
00:26:19
Speaker
Yeah.
00:26:21
Speaker
the fucking zombie comedy movie.
00:26:24
Speaker
Why am I blanking out?
00:26:25
Speaker
Oh, uh, uh, uh, Shaun of the Dead.
00:26:27
Speaker
Shaun of the Dead, which, we're just gonna go have a pint and let this all blow over.
00:26:32
Speaker
Yeah, pretty much.
00:26:33
Speaker
But there's a gun hanging over the bar.
00:26:37
Speaker
So good.
00:26:38
Speaker
So good.
00:26:41
Speaker
So Carlos Carlos's platoon arrives in Raccoon City.
00:26:45
Speaker
It's about five o'clock and they're just attacked by zombies pretty much right away.
00:26:51
Speaker
And they all line up and they start firing.
00:26:53
Speaker
Carlos is we're from Carlos's perspective and he real he's like, oh, shit, these are zombies.
00:26:59
Speaker
You got to shoot him, shoot him in the head.
00:27:01
Speaker
And I love this little character movement of him being like zombies.
00:27:08
Speaker
I'm not going to beat around.
00:27:09
Speaker
It was like the walking dead or walkers.
00:27:11
Speaker
He's like, no, there's zombies.
00:27:12
Speaker
We're going to shoot zombies.
00:27:14
Speaker
I respect the shit out of that.
00:27:16
Speaker
The decision to be like, you know, just call it what it is.
00:27:19
Speaker
We all know what we're dealing with.
00:27:20
Speaker
He would know pop culture exists in this world.
00:27:24
Speaker
Pop culture exists in this world.
00:27:25
Speaker
There's zombies.
00:27:26
Speaker
And be like, maybe if I shoot it ahead and he shoots one in the head and it dies, he's like, okay.
00:27:30
Speaker
Right.
00:27:32
Speaker
We don't have time, man.
00:27:34
Speaker
Let's just get on with it.
00:27:36
Speaker
I respect the shit out of that.
00:27:38
Speaker
Thank you, Stephanie, for writing this in here.
00:27:42
Speaker
Because we're, I'm going to be honest, we're on the fifth book of the series.
00:27:49
Speaker
We only got a little bit of ways to go, but at the same time, we've been at this for four years.
00:27:54
Speaker
So let's.
00:27:57
Speaker
We got two books after this still.
00:27:59
Speaker
Yeah.
00:27:59
Speaker
Heel toe, heel toe.
00:28:01
Speaker
Come on.
00:28:01
Speaker
Yeah, let's let's go.
00:28:03
Speaker
We cut to Nikolai's point of view.
00:28:05
Speaker
He and another guy, Wierzbowski, which is an aliens reference.
00:28:12
Speaker
Where's Balski was one of the Marines.
00:28:16
Speaker
Oh, yeah, that's right.
00:28:17
Speaker
Oh, my God.
00:28:18
Speaker
I can't believe that's past me.
00:28:21
Speaker
Where's Balski?
00:28:22
Speaker
Yeah.
00:28:24
Speaker
So Nikolai and John Wersbowski are the sole survivors of Squad B. They basically both intentionally sacrifice some people in order to get away from.
00:28:35
Speaker
And Nikolai has these moments.
00:28:37
Speaker
They're on the roof.
00:28:38
Speaker
They're just kind of sitting there.
00:28:40
Speaker
And Wurzbowski's like, where to next, boss?
00:28:42
Speaker
Nikolai's like, I could use a guy like this guy.
00:28:45
Speaker
And then he just like thinks about it for a second longer.
00:28:48
Speaker
And then he goes, nah.
00:28:49
Speaker
And he shoots Wurzbowski in the stomach and then shoots him in the face.

Nikolai's Betrayal

00:28:54
Speaker
Yeah.
00:28:57
Speaker
Just for good measure, right?
00:28:58
Speaker
Just to make sure.
00:28:59
Speaker
You got to make sure you got them right the first time.
00:29:02
Speaker
I'm not taking any chances.
00:29:05
Speaker
I'm not taking any chances, yeah.
00:29:08
Speaker
So anyway, where's Bowski's dead?
00:29:11
Speaker
He's like, all right, I'm going to get on with the killing.
00:29:14
Speaker
And he could see Carlos from the rooftop.
00:29:17
Speaker
I believe he refers to Carlos as the Hispanic.
00:29:21
Speaker
Ah, yes, yes.
00:29:22
Speaker
That's right.
00:29:23
Speaker
You know, and if you're going to, that's fine.
00:29:26
Speaker
Go with that.
00:29:27
Speaker
Sure.
00:29:27
Speaker
Go with that.
00:29:28
Speaker
Yeah.
00:29:31
Speaker
Jill, we're in chapter five now.
00:29:33
Speaker
Jill makes her way to the bar jack.
00:29:36
Speaker
She's she's been looking for that shotgun.
00:29:39
Speaker
She gets inside and she finds good old Brad Vickers.
00:29:44
Speaker
He is he's, you know, the one that's a piece of shit.
00:29:49
Speaker
He's the reason why the first game happens because he leaves them.
00:29:56
Speaker
Right.
00:29:57
Speaker
Like he could have not left them and that would have been fine.
00:30:02
Speaker
But he he left them.
00:30:04
Speaker
He left them.
00:30:05
Speaker
And the consequences have gone on for 20 plus years.
00:30:10
Speaker
Yeah.
00:30:11
Speaker
So there we go.
00:30:11
Speaker
Yeah.
00:30:13
Speaker
So anyway, she saves Brad from a zombie.
00:30:17
Speaker
Brad is losing his mind, though.
00:30:19
Speaker
He's talking about something that's been covering coming for the stars.
00:30:24
Speaker
And then he flees back out into the streets panicking.

Carlos' Moral Dilemma

00:30:29
Speaker
Jill is like, well, fuck that guy.
00:30:32
Speaker
Meanwhile, Carlos and his BFF, Randy Thomas.
00:30:36
Speaker
I forgot to mention Randy earlier.
00:30:38
Speaker
He's had a lot of character development so far.
00:30:41
Speaker
They're the only survivors from the squad.
00:30:43
Speaker
But Randy had his foot mostly bitten off.
00:30:47
Speaker
Yeah.
00:30:48
Speaker
By a zombie.
00:30:48
Speaker
Mostly.
00:30:49
Speaker
Mostly.
00:30:51
Speaker
And he's showing signs of infection.
00:30:53
Speaker
Carlos is like, ah, I need a radio.
00:30:57
Speaker
So he starts looking for a radio.
00:30:59
Speaker
Randy is turning into a zombie, though.
00:31:05
Speaker
And then he ends up having to shoot Randy in the head.
00:31:09
Speaker
Yep.
00:31:12
Speaker
we get a lot of detail about the radios by the way did you notice that yeah yeah yeah we also get another uh i forget if this is earlier or not but we get another copter we brought this up copters are back we we get our copters i'm sorry i forgot to mention copters but copters are in full effect indeed in this book it's so good
00:31:40
Speaker
Apostrophe sign copter copters copters copters I love it I love it why not Nikolai is goes inside the raccoon city police department he finds Ted Martin who was one of he was the assistant to the police chief he was also another watchdog agent
00:32:07
Speaker
And he finds a bunch of maps, some shotgun shells, a laptop.
00:32:13
Speaker
And as he's looking through the reports, he finds that a bunch of the other watchdog agents have already gotten killed.
00:32:21
Speaker
He goes down a manhole into a sewer, subterranean sewer system, and he starts walking around and he finds another agent, Dr. Tomlinson.
00:32:39
Speaker
this scene she runs walks in and he's pointing the gun at her and she's like what you doing there big boy and it's like she totally comes on to him and he like thinks about it for a second right it gives it yeah he gives it some thought there's no question it just like
00:33:04
Speaker
Then he shoots her in the, in the, in the, not in the, just the face, but in the, in the mouth.
00:33:09
Speaker
In the mouth.
00:33:10
Speaker
Yeah.
00:33:10
Speaker
Just.
00:33:11
Speaker
And it's just like the, the, the mess is, I forget how she wrote it.
00:33:16
Speaker
It was like the mess of blood and tissue that used to be her mouth or something.
00:33:19
Speaker
Something like that.
00:33:21
Speaker
It's pretty brutal.
00:33:22
Speaker
Yeah.
00:33:25
Speaker
I feel like we've amped it up violence-wise.
00:33:28
Speaker
Violence-wise, Stephanie has really amped it up.
00:33:31
Speaker
Yeah.
00:33:32
Speaker
But yeah, Nikolai, then after shooting her, was like, yeah, I could have used a tussle.
00:33:38
Speaker
I could have...
00:33:40
Speaker
That would have been nice.
00:33:42
Speaker
Would have been nice.
00:33:42
Speaker
Yeah.
00:33:44
Speaker
Okay.
00:33:45
Speaker
We really have to focus here, people.
00:33:46
Speaker
We have to focus here.
00:33:47
Speaker
Anyway, he gets her data disc and he's going on.
00:33:51
Speaker
Jill, meanwhile, gets to the RPD, finds, encounters a hunter, which is from the first game.
00:34:04
Speaker
I'm not sure hunters actually appear in Resident Evil 3.
00:34:06
Speaker
I can't remember, though.

Nemesis and Brad Vickers' Death

00:34:08
Speaker
I don't think so.
00:34:10
Speaker
But why not?
00:34:11
Speaker
She opens the gates to the to the RPD and Brad Vickers is like wounded and stumbling.
00:34:18
Speaker
And this is how we get our introduction to the tyrant of this game, who is just saying one word stars.
00:34:29
Speaker
Right.
00:34:30
Speaker
He grabs Brad by the face and sticks a tentacle through his mouth out the back of his head.
00:34:38
Speaker
And Jill is like, oh, man, he's going to bleed to death.
00:34:40
Speaker
And I'm like, Jill, honey, he's I don't think the blood loss is what killed him.
00:34:45
Speaker
Yeah, I don't think I don't think we have to focus on that part.
00:34:48
Speaker
I think.
00:34:48
Speaker
Yeah.
00:34:50
Speaker
Yeah.
00:34:50
Speaker
I think there's a lot going on here that, that, that might have more to do with it.
00:34:56
Speaker
Yeah.
00:34:56
Speaker
Yeah.
00:34:57
Speaker
Uh, Jill runs into the, uh, the police departments, closing the doors behind her, the tyrant or nemesis, um, uh, bangs on the door for a few week tries and then leaves her alone.
00:35:11
Speaker
Um, I guess those are some heavy doors.
00:35:13
Speaker
I don't know.
00:35:14
Speaker
They, they better be at that point.
00:35:16
Speaker
Like Jesus.
00:35:17
Speaker
Yeah.
00:35:18
Speaker
Carlos is reading up on a reporter's final entry about the city's descent into madness and finds out like basically it was all a cover up.
00:35:34
Speaker
You know, everything was falling apart.
00:35:36
Speaker
The police were complicit in the cover up.
00:35:38
Speaker
But then the police died, which is just, you know, that's that has nothing to do with anything that's happening right now.
00:35:46
Speaker
Right.
00:35:46
Speaker
Nothing.
00:35:47
Speaker
Not a damn thing.
00:35:48
Speaker
We cannot compare that.
00:35:49
Speaker
We cannot slash should not compare that.
00:35:52
Speaker
Compare that.
00:35:53
Speaker
To anything that's going on in our world.
00:35:55
Speaker
To anything that's happening right now in our world with ice.
00:36:02
Speaker
Yeah.
00:36:02
Speaker
Agents foolish and short sighted.
00:36:04
Speaker
Let's not be foolish and short sighted.
00:36:08
Speaker
God, I say that's what a lot of people online tell me.
00:36:11
Speaker
Yeah.
00:36:12
Speaker
So I say agents in a Resident Evil game.
00:36:15
Speaker
Oh, my God.
00:36:16
Speaker
God damn.
00:36:17
Speaker
Can you imagine how quickly they would die?
00:36:20
Speaker
It pretty fast, actually.
00:36:22
Speaker
They're not very good at what they do.
00:36:24
Speaker
They're not good at what they do.
00:36:25
Speaker
They're good enough.
00:36:27
Speaker
They're good enough to fuck up people's lives, but not to they're not exactly a fighting force at the same time.
00:36:33
Speaker
I saw somebody post on Blue Sky.
00:36:35
Speaker
We're like, yeah, I'm working my working my my dream job and work a tactical vest that's two sizes too small.
00:36:46
Speaker
Right.
00:36:47
Speaker
It is.
00:36:48
Speaker
It is just kind of like the the the militia fanatics dream job is really what it comes down to.
00:36:54
Speaker
It's it's a bunch of fucking LARPers.
00:36:56
Speaker
Bunch of LARPers.
00:36:57
Speaker
Fuck them.
00:36:59
Speaker
Fuck them.
00:37:01
Speaker
Ice should be disbanded.
00:37:03
Speaker
I mean, I would like to see that.
00:37:05
Speaker
You know what?
00:37:06
Speaker
You know what's older than ice?
00:37:09
Speaker
The Resident Evil franchise is older than ice and a hell of a lot more fun and a hell of a lot more fun.
00:37:18
Speaker
No, no.
00:37:19
Speaker
If you are a member of ICE and a Pixel It listener, I don't know how you happened to fall into that combination with your life, but I have no idea.
00:37:30
Speaker
Reconsider something.
00:37:33
Speaker
If you can't reconsider the ICE, reconsider your fandom.
00:37:36
Speaker
Yeah, yeah.
00:37:38
Speaker
You're not welcome here.
00:37:40
Speaker
We don't need you.
00:37:41
Speaker
We don't need you.
00:37:42
Speaker
That's fine.
00:37:43
Speaker
Yeah, so...
00:37:46
Speaker
uh carlos has to kill randy uh and then he's got the radio and he's like uh there's only static and then he's like oh i gotta go to grill 13 uh because trent told me to go there jill is in the star's office hears carlos through the radio but can't respond uh she uses her master of unlocking skills and opens the gun safe
00:38:10
Speaker
And gets Barry Burton's Colt Python 357 Magnum and ammunition.
00:38:17
Speaker
Beautiful.
00:38:18
Speaker
At this point, she decides to call the tyrant her nemesis.
00:38:23
Speaker
Uh-huh.
00:38:24
Speaker
Fine.
00:38:25
Speaker
Fine.
00:38:25
Speaker
You know what?
00:38:26
Speaker
Fine.
00:38:27
Speaker
Fine.
00:38:28
Speaker
And let's see.
00:38:32
Speaker
Chapter eight.
00:38:35
Speaker
Let's see.
00:38:35
Speaker
Carlos is continuing on.
00:38:37
Speaker
He's lost Randy.
00:38:39
Speaker
He's going to grill 13.
00:38:41
Speaker
He's brutally attacked by a fast...
00:38:45
Speaker
bioweapon it's it's like an insect i don't remember what this is referring to but it's got like six bladed legs or something like that um he takes care of it way too many way way too much ammo he wastes on it he basically oh gosh it's dead and he just puts the full clip in anyway
00:39:06
Speaker
Yeah, that's it.
00:39:06
Speaker
That's when the that's when the actual Resident Evil gamer in you goes, oh, don't know.
00:39:11
Speaker
This is no, that's not going to work out.
00:39:13
Speaker
That's not going to work out for you.
00:39:15
Speaker
That was a bad call.
00:39:17
Speaker
Trent, he makes it to Grill 13, though, and he can where he receives a call from Trent and he's like, Carlos is like, hey, buddy, you're going to get me out of here.
00:39:28
Speaker
Right.
00:39:29
Speaker
And Trent is like,
00:39:31
Speaker
Oh, no, I'm not going to get you out of here.
00:39:34
Speaker
Sorry.
00:39:34
Speaker
And things are going to get worse.
00:39:36
Speaker
But here's some things that could help you survive.
00:39:39
Speaker
But surviving is really up to you.
00:39:43
Speaker
I could give you everything you need, but that's you know what?
00:39:46
Speaker
It's it's motivation to do well.
00:39:48
Speaker
How about that?
00:39:50
Speaker
So keep your head on a swivel, kid.
00:39:51
Speaker
Keep your head on a swivel, kid.
00:39:53
Speaker
Carlos.
00:39:54
Speaker
So Trent basically gives him the lowdown that Umbrella created the T virus for bioweapons and then sent the UBCS into the disaster as more or less a test.
00:40:05
Speaker
Um, basic and in trend is like, you're going to need a couple of fake jewels, uh, to get into a thing.
00:40:13
Speaker
And then here's how, where the, the helicopters are.
00:40:17
Speaker
Here's a vaccine sample.
00:40:19
Speaker
And Carlos is like, all right, that's, that's fine.
00:40:23
Speaker
Um, he goes, uh, to the basement, uh, door of the restaurant that he's in.
00:40:29
Speaker
And that's when enter Jill Valentine, she is pointing her three 57 at him.
00:40:34
Speaker
And they're like, I'm Carlos, I'm sexy.
00:40:38
Speaker
And Jill is like, I'm Jill and I'm hot.
00:40:41
Speaker
And then it's like, I consent.
00:40:44
Speaker
I consent.
00:40:45
Speaker
Is there someone you forgot to ask stars?
00:40:49
Speaker
Right.
00:40:51
Speaker
Here comes Nemesis.
00:40:52
Speaker
Oh, no.
00:40:53
Speaker
Here he comes.
00:40:57
Speaker
Um, so we, uh, Jill, uh, prior to this had discovered police reports detail at the two fake gems that, uh, I forgot to mention the two fake gems that Carlos had heard about.
00:41:09
Speaker
Jill had already seen something about that in police reports written by, um, Marvin Branagh in another, um, uh, in, uh, another scene.
00:41:20
Speaker
Um,
00:41:21
Speaker
um so yeah nemesis is uh forcing them and they gotta they gotta go and uh that's that's the end of where we're that's where we're leaving it off right now it's them yeah them being chased by nemesis so phil how are you feeling so far
00:41:42
Speaker
I mean, it's another one of the Resident Evil

Fast-Paced Book Commentary

00:41:47
Speaker
books.
00:41:47
Speaker
I think this one really kind of kicks it into high gear a lot faster than the other ones did.
00:41:57
Speaker
I feel like we didn't have to wait around at all for the action to get started.
00:42:02
Speaker
And as a result, it feels a little frantic sometimes.
00:42:05
Speaker
But...
00:42:06
Speaker
Overall, still a pretty solid, just fun, breezy little read.
00:42:11
Speaker
So yeah, I got no complaints.
00:42:14
Speaker
Yeah, I mean, it's it's it you can tell in the novelization, it's a story that was kind of like backed into by some weird game development stuff.
00:42:27
Speaker
Right.
00:42:27
Speaker
Right.
00:42:28
Speaker
Very much so.
00:42:29
Speaker
Yeah.
00:42:30
Speaker
You can read that loud and clear.
00:42:32
Speaker
But yeah, I like it.
00:42:35
Speaker
I like the fact that it's it's basically continuing.
00:42:39
Speaker
She's continuing what she did in the other books, which is like what there's always a villain point of view character in her books.
00:42:45
Speaker
And in this one, it's it's Nikolai.
00:42:49
Speaker
And we're split between Carlos and Jill in here.
00:42:52
Speaker
Yeah.
00:42:54
Speaker
I feel like it reminds me how the remake, I think I understand why the Resident Evil 3 remake was such a disappointment is because there was a chance to be like, OK, we can actually expand it a little bit.
00:43:07
Speaker
But instead, it ended up cutting some things.
00:43:11
Speaker
Yeah, yeah.
00:43:13
Speaker
Which is weird.
00:43:14
Speaker
But yeah, Breezy Reed, there's a lot more action, whereas I think in the other ones, some of the action felt weightier, like...
00:43:30
Speaker
Yes.
00:43:31
Speaker
Yeah.
00:43:32
Speaker
There was a lot more intrigue.
00:43:33
Speaker
And so when shit hit the fan, it it it stood out.
00:43:38
Speaker
Yeah.
00:43:39
Speaker
Right now, the shit has hit the fan.
00:43:42
Speaker
Now there's a load of shit coming towards the fan.
00:43:46
Speaker
Right.
00:43:47
Speaker
Yeah.
00:43:47
Speaker
So everybody's covered in shit, but they're going to be covered in more shit.

Troma Movie Comparison

00:43:52
Speaker
It's basically like the end of the what's that Margaret Qualley movie?
00:44:02
Speaker
Oh, the substance.
00:44:03
Speaker
It's the end of the substance, but instead of blood, it's shit.
00:44:07
Speaker
It's just shit.
00:44:07
Speaker
Yeah.
00:44:07
Speaker
Just everyone's covered in shit.
00:44:10
Speaker
Would have been the trauma version of that movie.
00:44:12
Speaker
I mean, yeah, that's that's that's in the works if it wasn't already.
00:44:16
Speaker
Yeah.
00:44:18
Speaker
They should have had it done by now.
00:44:20
Speaker
Honestly, the fact that they were beaten to that just shows that Troma's lost a step.
00:44:27
Speaker
Yeah, not the team they used to be.
00:44:31
Speaker
Actually, I don't know.
00:44:31
Speaker
I have not watched a Troma movie in 20 years.
00:44:35
Speaker
Yeah, I kid, but no, I really don't know the first thing about Troma movies.
00:44:40
Speaker
I know a little bit.
00:44:42
Speaker
Yeah, I know.
00:44:43
Speaker
I mean, in college, I did my fair share of edgelord trauma watching.
00:44:49
Speaker
But after that, you're like, oh, this is I'm not enjoying this.
00:44:55
Speaker
Yeah, we're good.
00:44:57
Speaker
We're good.
00:44:57
Speaker
Yeah.
00:44:59
Speaker
You just hit that point where transgressive stops being interesting and starts being like, oh, my stomach is aching a little bit.
00:45:07
Speaker
it's ain't that a bitch when you're like i just i don't care guys i don't care okay you ran the baby over steamroller and the head popped off and the brain landed in the mother's mouth and then i don't know an anvil dropped on her it's it's fine it's
00:45:28
Speaker
It's fine.
00:45:29
Speaker
It's fine.
00:45:30
Speaker
It's fine.
00:45:31
Speaker
Yeah.
00:45:31
Speaker
It just doesn't quite resonate in the same way it used to.
00:45:36
Speaker
But we've seen these things.
00:45:38
Speaker
That's why it's a young man's game being edgy.
00:45:41
Speaker
It's a young man's.
00:45:43
Speaker
And it's why Lloyd Kaufman is still alive.
00:45:45
Speaker
He's still alive, right?
00:45:46
Speaker
That's the only thing.
00:45:47
Speaker
Yeah, I think so.
00:45:48
Speaker
He should be.
00:45:50
Speaker
Well, now I've got to.
00:45:51
Speaker
Now I've got to check.
00:45:54
Speaker
He's still alive.
00:45:55
Speaker
Yeah, he's still alive there.
00:45:57
Speaker
Look at that.
00:45:57
Speaker
Look at that.
00:45:59
Speaker
Look at that.
00:45:59
Speaker
Crazy nut job.
00:46:01
Speaker
Yeah.
00:46:02
Speaker
79.
00:46:02
Speaker
Damn.
00:46:03
Speaker
79.
00:46:03
Speaker
I thought he was older.
00:46:08
Speaker
A lot of people did.
00:46:09
Speaker
It looks like.
00:46:10
Speaker
Yeah.
00:46:14
Speaker
Well, with that being said, Phil, what are you playing?
00:46:20
Speaker
Oh, I am still playing clear obscure.
00:46:26
Speaker
I just got into the end of act two where there are the three big bads you've got to go defeat.
00:46:33
Speaker
I just finished the first one, but like the mask guy, the master of masks.
00:46:39
Speaker
I have fallen completely in love with Monoko.
00:46:42
Speaker
He is my favorite character.
00:46:45
Speaker
will die for Minoko.
00:46:47
Speaker
He is part of my main lineup now from here on out.
00:46:51
Speaker
I was like, I don't care what his shtick is.
00:46:54
Speaker
I will learn to play it because I adore this guy.
00:46:58
Speaker
I love him.
00:46:59
Speaker
And it just so turns out that I love his his his wheel of powers and shape shifting thing, which is just super fun.
00:47:08
Speaker
Really enjoying the game.
00:47:11
Speaker
The balance of
00:47:16
Speaker
crazy tragic emotions and over-the-top silly french humor um what kind of a game has me like has wells me up several times throughout gameplay and then has me fight a killer mime uh to unlock you know custom customizable haircuts and like that um yeah
00:47:41
Speaker
I'm really enjoying it.
00:47:47
Speaker
Um, and I'm really glad that I'm getting the attention it's getting.
00:47:51
Speaker
I'm really glad that it exists.
00:47:53
Speaker
Period.
00:47:56
Speaker
Um, it's, it's terrific.
00:47:57
Speaker
Uh, it's a really nice game.
00:47:58
Speaker
I'm really enjoying it.
00:48:00
Speaker
Um, and I, I, I,
00:48:01
Speaker
I've also played a couple of demos.
00:48:03
Speaker
Big shocker there.
00:48:06
Speaker
I played After Ink Revival.
00:48:10
Speaker
Oh, yeah, because Next Fest as of recording, and that's like that is peak time for Phil.
00:48:16
Speaker
Exactly.
00:48:16
Speaker
That's that's that's that's when we're really just working on it here after ink is done by the people who did plague ink from way back when.
00:48:25
Speaker
Oh, yeah.
00:48:27
Speaker
Yeah.
00:48:28
Speaker
Basically, it's a city builder.
00:48:29
Speaker
It's a it's a it's a forex settlement builder.
00:48:34
Speaker
Basically, it's like what happens after the events of Plague Inc and everything's gone to shit.
00:48:43
Speaker
It's clever.
00:48:43
Speaker
I tried playing Plague Inc again, I want to say last year at some point, and it just hasn't aged well.
00:48:51
Speaker
It's just not it doesn't hold you the way it used to.
00:48:54
Speaker
The novelty is kind of gone.
00:48:56
Speaker
Sure.
00:48:58
Speaker
This is actually a very impressive direction that they're taking it in.
00:49:02
Speaker
It has a lot of the stuff that that the first game that Plague Inc had that connects the two, like the bubbles and stuff like that.
00:49:16
Speaker
But the gameplay is a little more complex.
00:49:19
Speaker
It's a little more interesting.
00:49:20
Speaker
And if you like city builders, there's a lot of really good stuff there.
00:49:24
Speaker
You know, like like you'd expect with the, you know, it's zombies.
00:49:28
Speaker
Duh.
00:49:30
Speaker
So there's there's not a lot of new and original ideas in here, but it is very enjoyable.
00:49:38
Speaker
And the demo's huge.
00:49:42
Speaker
I think what's interesting about it, I don't know if this is how the full game works, but it's like you're like it's kind of like the Jurassic Park strategy game that came out where you're like kind of popping from one area to another and solving their problems.
00:49:58
Speaker
It's kind of a campaign fashion.
00:50:00
Speaker
It's not just build up your one thing and see how big you can make it.
00:50:03
Speaker
Although I'm sure that's an option in the game, too.
00:50:06
Speaker
And they have a lot.
00:50:08
Speaker
I was expecting like one or two levels.
00:50:09
Speaker
They have a lot in this demo.
00:50:12
Speaker
It's it's pretty impressive.
00:50:15
Speaker
I've played two hours of it and I haven't repeated anything.
00:50:19
Speaker
So it's it's a very generous demo, let's say the game is out.
00:50:24
Speaker
I believe it came out, isn't it?
00:50:28
Speaker
No, the game.
00:50:30
Speaker
Well, you know, by the time this episode comes out, the game will have just come out.
00:50:36
Speaker
It's very interesting.
00:50:38
Speaker
I think it's worth a play.
00:50:39
Speaker
It's very cool.
00:50:42
Speaker
The other one that I played was the demo for Dispatch.
00:50:49
Speaker
This is a game that's done by a lot of ex Telltale.
00:50:53
Speaker
developers.
00:50:54
Speaker
Okay.
00:50:57
Speaker
It's basically the plotline is you are an ex-superhero who basically you are an Iron Man style character.
00:51:05
Speaker
You had a mech or something like that and it's destroyed.
00:51:09
Speaker
And so you're still working in the superhero world but you work for essentially the dispatch for like the superhero whatevers.
00:51:21
Speaker
And
00:51:22
Speaker
It's beautifully animated.
00:51:24
Speaker
The voice acting is really, really good.
00:51:27
Speaker
And it's really, really funny so far.
00:51:29
Speaker
For what I played of it, the demo took me about 40 minutes to get through.
00:51:35
Speaker
And but the thing was, ultimately, at first I'm done with Telltale like like it's they're gone.
00:51:42
Speaker
And that's very sad.
00:51:43
Speaker
And the stuff that they made was unique for what they did.
00:51:46
Speaker
But I don't need any more Telltale.
00:51:48
Speaker
So when I first started playing it and it was like,
00:51:52
Speaker
someone says something and you have a little timer and you've got to pick your choices matter and all that shit.
00:51:58
Speaker
I just kind of went, Oh, I don't know, man.
00:52:00
Speaker
I don't know if I, I don't know if I want to play one of these again.
00:52:03
Speaker
Fortunately, it has a gameplay aspect between these moments where it's the dispatch and you have a team of, I want to say half a dozen superheroes.
00:52:14
Speaker
They all have different specialties.
00:52:16
Speaker
They all have different abilities and
00:52:19
Speaker
you get contacted by so and so, uh, my, my cat, my kittens up a tree or whatever like that.
00:52:24
Speaker
Right.
00:52:24
Speaker
So you're like, okay, this guy can fly.
00:52:26
Speaker
I'm sending him over there to take care of the tree and the cat.
00:52:30
Speaker
And so it goes over and it's on a timer.
00:52:33
Speaker
So after they come back, they can rest.
00:52:35
Speaker
And it's just you doing, uh, you know, project management of like, who am I sending here?
00:52:41
Speaker
Who am I sending there?
00:52:42
Speaker
Who will do the best job?
00:52:43
Speaker
Um,
00:52:45
Speaker
while these people are in your ear and they're really sarcastic and very funny.
00:52:51
Speaker
The writing is outstanding.
00:52:53
Speaker
It's very, very, very good.
00:52:54
Speaker
So it's more than the telltale like.
00:52:57
Speaker
Exactly.
00:52:58
Speaker
OK, yeah, good.
00:52:59
Speaker
It's it's which I think it needed.
00:53:02
Speaker
It wouldn't have been enough on its own, at least to interest me.
00:53:08
Speaker
I was never, you know, a, you know, what do you call it?
00:53:14
Speaker
a visual novel guy and that's sure.
00:53:16
Speaker
And Telltale Games in many cases were just kind of an amped up version of those.
00:53:21
Speaker
And after, you know, after I played the first Walking Dead game and, you know, some of the other ones, I was just like, OK, we're good.
00:53:28
Speaker
I get it.
00:53:30
Speaker
And but this has a gameplay loop that's more strategy based.
00:53:35
Speaker
You can upgrade your heroes.
00:53:37
Speaker
You know, they gain experience and you can make certain stats higher.
00:53:42
Speaker
It's it's pretty cool.
00:53:45
Speaker
I believe this one is also not out yet.
00:53:47
Speaker
It's coming out in.
00:53:50
Speaker
Oh, wait, no, it is out.
00:53:52
Speaker
No, no, this is the demo.
00:53:53
Speaker
They haven't announced the date yet as far as I've... This is the demo that I just played.
00:53:57
Speaker
Yeah, exactly.
00:54:01
Speaker
It's coming out sometime this year, as far as we can tell.
00:54:03
Speaker
And again, really worth playing.
00:54:06
Speaker
It took me less than an hour to play it.
00:54:08
Speaker
One of the heroes looks like the Tiefling from Baldur's Gate 3.
00:54:14
Speaker
Oh, totally, totally.
00:54:15
Speaker
And she's excellent.
00:54:18
Speaker
I refuse to believe that she isn't somewhat based on her.
00:54:20
Speaker
I mean, I'm sure they had to work on this for a long time.
00:54:23
Speaker
Yeah.
00:54:23
Speaker
That can't quite work.
00:54:25
Speaker
The heroes are all really neat.
00:54:27
Speaker
They've all got abilities that sometimes you wouldn't expect them to have.
00:54:32
Speaker
I think my favorite one is Golem, who is a construct.
00:54:38
Speaker
who is just, you know, made out of clay and machinery and stuff like that, and yet is still a sarcastic, funny son of a bitch.
00:54:46
Speaker
It's pretty great.
00:54:48
Speaker
Again, super worth playing just to get a taste of what they're going to offer later on.
00:54:56
Speaker
So, yeah, Dispatch, highly recommended.
00:55:00
Speaker
Kevin, what about you?
00:55:01
Speaker
What are you playing?
00:55:02
Speaker
None.
00:55:03
Speaker
I am playing, let's see, right now I'm playing Labyrinth of the Demon King.
00:55:11
Speaker
So if you are like me, a sicko for some PS1 stuff,
00:55:20
Speaker
Labyrinth of the Demon King might be right up your alley.
00:55:24
Speaker
It is basically think of think of it's like King's Field with a bit of Resident Evil in there.
00:55:36
Speaker
You play as a samurai.
00:55:39
Speaker
It's feudal Japan.
00:55:41
Speaker
You you.
00:55:44
Speaker
You're not really sure what's going on in terms of why you're there, but you're there to dispatch of the Demon King and you show up in his realm with nothing but your armor and your sword, which has been broken in half.
00:55:59
Speaker
Um, and you arrive and you're told that you need to go through the, um, four towers in order to, and defeat the wardens of the four towers in order to access the demon King.
00:56:11
Speaker
Uh, it's a spooky dungeon crawl hack and slash game.
00:56:17
Speaker
It's got stamina.
00:56:18
Speaker
So you got a, you got some dark souls, stamina management in there.
00:56:23
Speaker
But then there's a lot of item puzzles where it's like, you know, you have to read the document and figure out what your which items are using.
00:56:33
Speaker
I'm having a blast with it so far.
00:56:37
Speaker
And, you know, it's got cool monster designs and all that.
00:56:41
Speaker
It's one of those games.
00:56:41
Speaker
It's weird because you look at it, the screenshots, it doesn't photograph particularly well.
00:56:46
Speaker
It looks better in motion than it does in the stills.
00:56:52
Speaker
It's got that good PS one muddiness.
00:56:54
Speaker
It's got that good PS one muddiness to it, baby.
00:56:57
Speaker
It's yeah.
00:56:59
Speaker
It looks like it's been drawn.
00:57:01
Speaker
You painted you gave Bob Ross some some some paint, but it was all mud.
00:57:08
Speaker
And he just had to make a painting, a landscape painting out of that.
00:57:16
Speaker
One of my favorite things is the people that there's random people that help you.
00:57:21
Speaker
One's a little cat demon person who the first thing she does is like, oh, yeah, if you could go downstairs and grab the Buddha statue out of this cabinet for me.
00:57:36
Speaker
Yeah, I'll help you out with something.
00:57:38
Speaker
You go down and you grab the Buddha statue and that summons a demon.
00:57:44
Speaker
uh who then begins chasing you around and the demon can spawn from any blood puddle that's been left on the floor oh jesus christ and you can't kill it you can't kill it you if you do it enough damage it stops for a little bit but that's about it um so that's the first thing and then she's like oh great you got me the buddha statue i'll sell you items now he's like oh
00:58:07
Speaker
Cool.
00:58:07
Speaker
Thank you.
00:58:08
Speaker
Cool.
00:58:08
Speaker
Thanks.
00:58:09
Speaker
Thanks.
00:58:10
Speaker
And then she's like, oh, there's a there's a demon in the kitchen that I've been saving because I like eating demon skin.
00:58:19
Speaker
So, you know, don't don't let him out because I'm really savoring him.
00:58:25
Speaker
And you go down to the kitchen when you unlock him and let him out, you find out that he's her husband.
00:58:30
Speaker
Of course.
00:58:31
Speaker
Yeah, good.
00:58:32
Speaker
And he's just this little demon.
00:58:34
Speaker
They call him Kappa's.
00:58:35
Speaker
Uh, he's a short little dude and he's a blacksmith and he upgrades your weapons.
00:58:39
Speaker
Uh, aren't the, the Kappa's like the turtle demons or something like that?
00:58:43
Speaker
Or I think, yeah, probably something like that.
00:58:46
Speaker
I don't know.
00:58:46
Speaker
Um,
00:58:48
Speaker
But yeah, it's a lot of fun.
00:58:51
Speaker
Looks like mud.
00:58:52
Speaker
Very slow to play, but you kind of get used to it.
00:58:57
Speaker
I think I'm most of the way through it at this point.
00:59:01
Speaker
If I'm judging by my achievements, I've unlocked 21 out of 27.
00:59:06
Speaker
So, um, yeah, that sounds, that sounds like you're getting there at the end.
00:59:09
Speaker
Yeah.
00:59:09
Speaker
And I've, I've beaten, uh, a bunch of several bosses, which are, uh, the bosses can be a little bit tricky.
00:59:19
Speaker
Um, so that's, that's one of the things I've been playing.
00:59:22
Speaker
The other thing I have been playing at night while I just kind of chill out is, uh, house flipper two, which is, you know, just, yeah.
00:59:32
Speaker
Me and my bullshit.
00:59:34
Speaker
You know, that's I beat base.
00:59:37
Speaker
I basically I beat power washer washing simulator all the way through.
00:59:44
Speaker
Like I've beaten every level on that and I needed something else.
00:59:48
Speaker
All the DLC.
00:59:50
Speaker
I cleaned the Lehman Russ tanks in the Warhammer DLC.
00:59:55
Speaker
You know, I did it all.
00:59:58
Speaker
So until Power Wash Simulator 2 comes out, I needed something for my fix.
01:00:07
Speaker
So I'm playing House Flipper 2 as my nighttime sitting and listening to TV game.
01:00:15
Speaker
Nice.
01:00:16
Speaker
Yeah.
01:00:17
Speaker
I can see where that would scratch the same itch.
01:00:19
Speaker
Yeah.
01:00:20
Speaker
Yeah.
01:00:20
Speaker
It kind of scratches the same itch.
01:00:21
Speaker
It's close enough.
01:00:25
Speaker
Right, right.
01:00:26
Speaker
It'll do the trick.
01:00:27
Speaker
It'll do the trick.
01:00:29
Speaker
But yeah, that's it.
01:00:30
Speaker
That's it for tonight.
01:00:32
Speaker
That's all we got.
01:00:34
Speaker
Thank you all so much for listening.
01:00:38
Speaker
It's always a pleasure.
01:00:40
Speaker
Always a pleasure.

01:00:55
Speaker
This week I'll be... Well, I'll ask Phil first.
01:01:00
Speaker
Um, so when you are, uh, when you're broiling, uh, demons in a, you know, you're, you got a Dutch, you got a Dutch oven, right?
01:01:13
Speaker
And you're, you got some demon flesh in there.
01:01:16
Speaker
But you're trying to cover up the sound of it screaming in Infernal because it's never really dead.
01:01:27
Speaker
How do you cover that sound up, especially for the dogs, because the dog ears are more sensitive to the high pitched wailing?
01:01:38
Speaker
What would you say I should do for that?
01:01:40
Speaker
When it comes to dogs, I think especially with the smaller breeds, if you've got classic demon, you take its horns, you know, and that's not going to need those.
01:01:49
Speaker
You're going to be boiling it.
01:01:50
Speaker
Right.
01:01:51
Speaker
So you get the horns off, you go up to the dog and you make sure just to gently slide them in.
