Introduction and Announcement

00:00:01
Speaker
Hello and welcome to episode number five of the Two Guys One Screen podcast. My name is Nick. And I'm Gerald. And today we have for you a review on Strange Darling, arguably my favorite movie of the year. This movie is amazing, guys. Fucking really good.

Audience Engagement and Technical Challenges

00:00:21
Speaker
ah Before we get started, let me do some plugs real quick. Follow us on Instagram, Two Guys One Screen Pod and email us any questions, comments, concerns on two guys, one screen pod at gmail dot.com letterbox also in the description, send us an email, let us know what you think. Should we keep doing this or should we fuck off? I don't know. Yeah. I mean, if you say fuck off, that's fair. We're still going to do it. Fuck you.
00:00:55
Speaker
Apologies. We'll say it now. Apologies for the alien Romulus episode. We had some. severe technical difficulties. if you get We don't know what we're doing. Just recording, uh, IRL was a very challenging experience for us. Yeah. Uh, we actually prefer remote, I think for now, which is strange. You think it would be easier doing it in person. It wasn't. No.

Physical Media Pickups

00:01:23
Speaker
All right. Uh, let's get into some physical media pickups. You want to go first? Sure. I'll go. Cause you have no idea what I'm showing you.
00:01:30
Speaker
No, I don't. All right. So, uh, the first one we got a two pack of ice age one and two. What was that? Five bucks, five bucks. Uh, I've been looking for ice age to the meltdown.
00:01:47
Speaker
And for some reason, no, apparently it's not easy to find, but I found a two pack for five bucks. So do you have ice age one? I have ice age one. Yes, not two. Okay. Well, then I guess I'll give my ice age one to my local movie store. Shout out to him. Shout out. Not doxing myself. Nope.
00:02:05
Speaker
ah Then for $7.95, Slipcover included, I completed the trilogy of The Equalizer. That movie, for $7, is fine. That movie's so bad. The movie's terrible. I figured. ah But complete the trilogy, I guess. I like one and two. Can I just say this? can we No more Equalizer movies, okay? We're done. once Once your main actor hits a certain age, you just need to stop doing action movies, you know? Can I also say this? This is not a popular opinion.
00:02:34
Speaker
um Denzel Washington, I believe, plays about four characters in all of his filmography. That's fair. More or less. People think that's like a hot take who I've said that to. I'm happy you don't think so. It's like he kind of does the same thing in every movie a little bit. What's your favorite Denzel movie?
00:02:53
Speaker
Wow, loaded question. All right, my personal, like it has the most meaning to me is this movie called Safe House with Ryan Reynolds. I went and saw it with my grandmother, like as a kid in this movie, I thought Denzel was like the shit. Cause like I saw this before I even saw Training Day. Oh, wow. Yeah. So I think, yeah, it's not a popular opinion, but I think mine is Safe House. I don't think mine's very popular either, but I'm going to go flight.
00:03:22
Speaker
Dude, I really like flight flight is so good. He's so good in it too. Like, yeah, I know he plays like the same. I feel like that's a little, a little step above for him. You know, that was a little different. Yeah. Yeah. I enjoy flight. And then the last one for this segment for me.
00:03:41
Speaker
is, okay, so i've I've been wanting this movie on 4k, but the price has been way too high. It's been staying at like $50 cause it's a Keno Dorber release. So I just bit the bullet and I just got the Blu-ray for $10. Uh, that's monster squad. I've never seen that. What is that? So it's a 1987 movie about basically take all the universal monsters, but make it like they're coming alive and attacking kids.
00:04:11
Speaker
Is it like our, is it Gore? Nah, it's a comedy. It's like a, it's a PG-13 comedy, but the special effects are pretty good. Practical, of course. Shout out to Practical Effects as always. We love Practical Effects. I've heard that this Blu-ray in particular is a bad transfer, but I'd rather watch the movie first and then upgrade later. Oh, so you've never seen or do you have.
00:04:38
Speaker
I saw it back in the day, but I can't remember. Who knows? so Yeah. Like bridge terabithia, which by the way, my personal favorite episode so far. It was just good vibes. Everybody should go listen to it. Go listen to it if you haven't already. What are you doing here? What you got, big dog? We got some, we're cooking this week. I mean, I only got three things, but I'm feeling pretty good. I found at Walmart the, Oh, wait a minute.
00:05:07
Speaker
the Back to the Future trilogy on Steelbook for $26. Hold up, wait a minute. Hold up, wait a minute. That's a deal. What a steal. What a steal. And then the next two, one I'm more impressed with than the other, to be honest.
00:05:27
Speaker
You and I went to Big Lots? Yeah. Not good, Will. Big Lots. And I found a Scream Factory release of this movie you've been telling me to watch, Rent a Pal, for $7. Finding a Scream Factory for $7? Wrapped. Ridiculous. In mint condition. Never been opened. And then lastly,
00:05:52
Speaker
Paranormal also at big lots paranormal activity one through three for five bucks. I mean I've never seen them

Strange Darling Movie Review

00:06:00
Speaker
The first one's good. Yeah, I mean might as well might as well cop it and see what all the hypes about I have a fat stack you can see my camera Well, the viewers can't right there. Those are all the movies we got and I have to watch all those still so I Paranormal activity was only made for like $15,000 and half the budget they put new hardwood flooring in the house. They were filming in But we make a lot of money right they make a shit ton of money. Oh, yeah, but let's get into to strange darling, I think We're gonna preface this review spoiler big big spoiler but we normally don't do this, however, I We highly recommend you go see this movie before you listen to this review. Drop everything, seek it out, go see it. That's a good call. Yeah, go watch this in the theater. Go see this. Yeah. ah So you were telling me before you went pretty far to go see this? Pretty far. My local regal was not showing it. I had to go to an AMC.
00:07:10
Speaker
which is why we're pushing this off a week. Cause obviously when you guys hear this, it came out last week, ah but it is kind of had a limited release for some reason. I don't know why. I mean, most of my local fears also were not showing it. The trailer looked very straightforward to me, but as we get into it, like it's a, it's a complex movie through me for a loop.
00:07:38
Speaker
So Strange Darling stars, Willa Fitzgerald, who I've never heard of that might be disrespectful to say. Yeah. What was she in? Nothing. Oh, okay. Sorry. I don't mean to say it like that, but literally nothing. She was in the fall of the house of usher, which I believe is a show, not a movie. Right. but I don't, you and I aren't big TV series guys, so we don't know.
00:08:03
Speaker
ah But she's great in this. I mean, she's fantastic. Everybody in this movie, besides one character, in my opinion, we'll get to at the end, ah is really fantastic. We have Kyle Gellner, who's in so many things. I mean, he was in Jennifer's Body, Smile, Scream. I never know which one this is. It's either four or five. Five. If it's just Scream? Yeah, it's just Scream. Five. Five. American Sniper, a great movie.
00:08:35
Speaker
ah He was in Red Eye. He was in The Nightmare on Elm Street. A Nightmare on Elm Street remake. Yeah, he's like the main character in that. Don't watch that movie. Copy that. Oh, he was in um The Haunting in Connecticut. Have you seen that? I have. Mid.
00:08:52
Speaker
And a bunch of stuff. He was also, again, fantastic in this movie. We also have. Ed Beagley, Junior, who plays Frederick,
00:09:05
Speaker
and Barbara Hershey, who plays Genevieve. They are the older couple. They were great, man. Fantastic. Steven Michael Kazata plays Pete. Madison B plays Gail. Denise Grayson plays Libby. And Eugene Kuzmina plays Beth. Oh, Bianca A. Santos plays Tanya. Sherry Foster plays the driver. Sherry Foster plays the driver.
00:09:36
Speaker
I don't know why I said Sherry Foster like I knew who she was, I don't. Sherry Foster.
00:09:43
Speaker
So this movie was filmed on 35 millimeter, which we all respect the fuck out of that. Well, I guess not everybody does. Apparently a lot of people on Letterboxd at least were really shitting on it that they announced like at the beginning of the movie that it was filmed on 35 millimeter. why are you Why are you upset that they were saying that? Oh, so they're hating on the fact that it was that they announced out that they did it. Right. Oh, that's. That's so fucking stupid. No, because so many movies today are not. Shot digitally, the shot on film, and you can tell. And let me tell you, I think it enhances. The film itself. Yeah, I mean, it definitely. Enhances the experience for sure. It it makes it have like a raw quality that you really need in a movie like this. I agree with that.
00:10:36
Speaker
By the way, how was your theater? Mine was pretty empty. I had like three dudes and a kid. A kid. So he yeah, this guy brought like his, he's gotta be like seven, seven year old kid to see this. ah Oh wow. I mean, that's an experience for sure. But the dudes, of course, were right behind me and like two seats over from me. Why people do that?
00:11:02
Speaker
Oh, yeah, I give the whole theater. Yeah. And this theater had like 60 seats. It was a big, big aquarium. Don't don't go near me, dude. Don't be that person. Right. So we'll start ah the movie opens in black and white. And it's that scene that was in the trailer, which this movie does not. The trailer I have no beef with. I'm saying it was in the truck, not in a derogatory way.
00:11:31
Speaker
We've been really shitting on trailers for just tell straight up telling you everything that happens in the movie. This filmmakers is how you make a fucking trailer. All right. So it's Kyle Galner's character.
00:11:47
Speaker
we see in black and white choking somebody, but it doesn't show you who, it's just like his arms and like his face, but you can't see who it is. Then on the screen, there is some print that says this is based on a true story from 2018 to 2020, a massive killing spree in Oregon, and they're showing you how it ended the last events of this rampage. Do you know what movie that gave me big vibes of? Poughkeepsie Tapes.
00:12:18
Speaker
Texas chainsaw massacre, the OG. Yeah. I don't know why I said, but Kipi tapes has a, not a great poll. That's all right. And then we get, uh, the lady running in slow motion up the road and they label her the lady. Right. That's, that's her character name. Her character name is the lady. So we will will be referring to her characterize the lady. Then you see chasing behind her in a truck.
00:12:46
Speaker
Kyle's character who is named the demon. And then you get a credit role as she's coming towards you. And then the movie does this a lot when the demon makes an appearance, the music like swells and it's like, Oh, this is like,
00:13:03
Speaker
I almost sounded like the big bad wolf is here. It's just like you're right. You're right. It's like the the hunter stalking the prey. Yeah. So as the lady, the cracks are rolling. You just see her running towards us slowly and actually gets closer. You're like, oh, her ear is either missing or bloody. You don't know at that point. You just see it. And then you get hit with the title card. Strange, strange, darling. And below it, it says a thriller in six chapters.
00:13:32
Speaker
So the movie's broken up into six chapters, as I just said. And what really, I think puts this movie to the next level is the nonlinear storytelling they use. This works so fucking well. I was just watching this as each title card would change during the different sequences. I was like, this is brilliant. Yeah, it's so good. This is filmmaking at its best. If you ask me, it it really, it really works.
00:13:59
Speaker
So there' is a it cuts then to a car chase. The beginning is a little all over the place, but it's for a reason. she's He's driving. The lady's driving. He gets out with a gun and shoots at her, shoots through her back windshield, and then she goes all discombobulated and ends up like fishtailing and flipping her car. So we get to chapter three. Did you catch the title for chapter three? Because I didn't see it.
00:14:27
Speaker
Not for chapter three. No. Okay. So we get, this is called chapter three and we cut to the demon driving in his truck and he's snorting something. Something's going up his nose and he slams on his brakes. He gets out of the car. He shoots the leaves back windows. We just said she rolls over and crashes.
00:14:49
Speaker
Uh, she crawls out from under her car and she stands in the middle of the road. I don't know if this really works as far as like logic, but I love this movie. So she stands in the middle of the road and he, the demon just gases the truck. Like he's going to run her over and then she's like scoots off to the side. He's going at least like at least a hundred miles an hour and she just casually like dodges out of the way. Yeah.
00:15:18
Speaker
So she runs, she's running through their woods. We're following her through their woods and she hides behind this tree and there's like stuff there. Like people have been camping. They never really explain this. Yeah. It's not explained, but it looks like someone was like, you're like, you said camping or a nice little excursion. Yeah. So.

Symbolism and Atmosphere

00:15:40
Speaker
she goes she's sitting behind this tree and the demon is in pursuit and again when he's like on screen like pursuing her there's like this music of like oh this is like a nefarious character and And she rips the band-aid off her ear and she's like trying to like not yell in pain because she's being stalked. And then this was pretty good. She bites down on her shirt and pours the alcohol she just found next to this tree all over her ear. And that probably burned like fucking hell. I kind of cringed a little bit. I was like, Oh, I can almost feel that.
00:16:13
Speaker
Yeah. Like the sizzle is like, oh Oh, there. Yeah. There's a little sizzle and it's like, you know, disinfecting wounds, man, especially with like straight up alcohol, man, straight up. Uh, then she just takes a big old swig of the rest of it.
00:16:30
Speaker
Yeah, and she smokes a cigarette, which this is something that happens a lot during the movie. They make a point to show this, and I don't know if I figured out the connection to it yet, but like something happens and like a character will just pull a cigarette out and like smoke it and they make it a point to show you that they're smoking it. Yeah, I kind of took it as like stress relief. Yeah, or like, yeah, trying to process what the fuck's going on. Yeah.
00:16:56
Speaker
OK, so she runs off after she smokes sick and she finds this house that has like speakers outside and they're the speakers are playing a podcast, a radio interview, something about finding Bigfoot. Yeah, it was like, oh, we found ah squatches in these here woods. Well, I guess it makes an organ. I'm sure the Bigfoot propaganda is crazy there. Oh, do you believe in Bigfoot?
00:17:24
Speaker
um
00:17:27
Speaker
I lean you're out on Bigfoot. Yeah, I don't think it's real. I lean more towards No, but my mind is open You could be you your mind could be changed. Yeah, it's not like the alien thing where aliens exist Yeah, 100% but Bigfoot, uh The video is coming out of aliens in our is crazy. It's like this is like undeniable footage.
00:17:51
Speaker
undeniable footage and it's like yeah you could say all those conspiracy theorists out there that oh it's coming from the government they're just feeding us I don't know guys this is like some real shit it's kind of crazy people still don't think they're aliens it's kind of ignorant it's 100% ignorant if you think you're the only life form in this universe you can go fuck yourself straight up dude hey go fuck yourself so She's like snooping, not snooping. She's like walking around this house looking for the entrance, I imagine, and you hear them talking about Bigfoot. She bangs on the front door and the couple, the aforementioned couple, answered the door and Genevieve has bear spray, you learn to find out. I thought it was like a can of read, which is cockroach out of my house. Honestly, I just thought it was like pepper spray. Well, that's probably a better idea. It was my logical thinking, but I guess not.
00:18:46
Speaker
So we cut to chapter five and chapter five is called here, kitty, kitty, kitty. And the lady is hiding. You can't really tell what it is. I wrote in the notes. It was a car, but you come to find out it's not. It's just dark and yeah hiding with a lighter and the lighter is the only source of light. So you can kind of see part of her face and you hear the demon walking around going here, kitty, kitty, kitty. And this is how like.
00:19:14
Speaker
Off I was on what this movie was because I wrote in the notes demon now in the house from previous scene. Question mark. like a I was like, what's going on? Right. And you the scenes here, it was kind of cool. You follow him around the the upstairs or wherever he is in the house and he shoots like these random chests. The couple has all over their house. Why do you got so many chests? Old people like to put blankets in chests. I found what is this Minecraft.
00:19:44
Speaker
Yeah, man, that's the only form of storage. ah So he shoots like two or three chests and she's in none of them. And. The camera shows this was kind of confusing because you watch him go upstairs. The camera leaves him going up the stairs and pans into a hallway that goes into the kitchen and you see Frederick laying there with his brains blown out. Well, not actually, that's not true. He's just there's blood coming out of his body and he's laying on the ground face down.
00:20:14
Speaker
And the demon just shows up as like, you just went upstairs, but it's okay. It's okay. Cause this movie is amazing. So he stands there for a minute. He grabs a cigarette, starts smoking a cigarette. He goes outside and I didn't catch onto this till later in the film, but there's like chickens or birds out in the yard. And this is like,
00:20:41
Speaker
For me, maybe my eyesight's bad. It looked like just white triangles. I couldn't see what it was, but it must've just been... It was frozen like poultry, like turkey, or... So the first thing I saw, that that big ass triangle, I was like, yeah that's a big slab of prosciutto. This couple's got a whole last thing of prosciutto in their fucking freezer.
00:21:00
Speaker
But yeah, it's like a bunch of poultry vacuum sealed. He kind of has an aha moment on the lawn because there's like this poultry sitting in the yard and he walks in the kitchen and there's a ah chest freezer, which these big ass freezers belong in a garage, not in your kitchen. Yeah. Like when I, uh, when my parents had one, we had it in the basement, you know? Right. Like right you have your normal freezer in your fridge. You don't need another one right outside the kitchen.
00:21:29
Speaker
I guess maybe the old people they can't go down the stairs. So they just put it upstairs, right? Yeah, I guess. So do you think their kitchens actually upstairs? so I thought it was downstairs.

Chapter One Flashback

00:21:41
Speaker
Because like that shot that I was telling you about, he the demon goes upstairs and the camera doesn't follow him. So we're still on the ground floor, but then he walks in anyway. So I don't know if like we're we should believe like he checked upstairs, came back down and saw homie lay in their dead. No, I'm saying like.
00:21:59
Speaker
If they we don't know if they have a basement. Oh, we don't know. Right. But true. We don't know anything. Yeah. If they did, like I could see it because they're old. They don't want to go downstairs. Right. So he puts together that all this frozen food is just sitting out in the lawn. So she must be in the freezer chest. So he opens the freezer chest. He shoots it open. She screams. He opens it and he goes to grab her and it cuts to black.
00:22:27
Speaker
Then we go to chapter one. Now this is really where it turns. This is where it's like, oh, this is kind of wild. And obviously a hindsight's 2020, but like looking back on this scene, like how did we not put it together? I agree.
00:22:48
Speaker
All right. So we are, it pans down from a sign, the blue angel motel or hotel. It's one of the two motel for sure. mobile Well, it's a place where you stay the night. Look, it ain't the Ritz Carlton. Okay. So the demon is smoking a cigarette with a random lady in his truck and They're having a good time and he's like, should we go get a room or like, what do you wanna do? And she's like, well, how about we just like sit here and have beers, smoke cigs and make out a little and make out. And they're doing that and the camera pans down to under the demon seat and it is a ah shows a rifle. um And then this line of,
00:23:42
Speaker
dialogue here i didn't write down exactly what he wrote what he said but he said something to the effect of i never do this and like my wife's got her own life and i got mine or something like that like he has a wife like he's cheating on his wife right or that's all made up i have no idea no you're you're right because he has a ring on okay yeah i just was like because
00:24:09
Speaker
He's the demon. So anything is kind of possible with him. Like he could just made all this. It could have just been a facade. Right. To like get this girl into bed with him. Right. Because he's a serial killer, right? And she murder her. Yeah. Right. And she goes into this whole rant where she I feel is very important. Oh, yeah, this is crucial. Where she's talking about how. A lot of men think that women are prudes and The fact is they're not afraid of having sex with men. They're afraid of what the men are going to do to them. It's very pushing the fact that women are very concerned about dating and all men are evil. Yeah. And the other thing, I mean, that's very well said. Also, just like she also hits on
00:25:09
Speaker
but like It's a way more risk for me to go out with a man than it is for you to go out with some lady Yeah so This is crazy It just cuts to them in the hotel room motel, whatever and She's getting choked and she's saying something. Oh, she's cuffed to the bed. By the way. Yeah, it's like leather like almost like belts like um Kinky shit. Yeah So she's getting choked and you can't really hear what she's saying at first. It's like, e and then eventually you hear her say harder and then they give up. He takes the cuffs off and she's like, I don't know why this isn't working. This always works for me.
00:25:58
Speaker
Uh, and they, this whole scene is like her just being a tease. Yeah. And he's getting really fed up. He's not like super fed up. He's getting blue balled. He is getting blue balls. He's like, I'm here for some puss. What are you doing here? Have you ever gotten blue balls? Not a while, but like in your life you've had it. Oh yeah. For sure. I got a bad one time. I don't think I ever told you this. Oh, okay. We love to cut this, but okay.
00:26:28
Speaker
Bro, music in the parks?
00:26:35
Speaker
You got the fucking six lines going on. Yeah, we went. We had music in the parks, and I just started dating this girl. um Oh, fuck.
00:26:52
Speaker
And I wasn't a big amusement park person. I didn't love going on the rides and everything else. And maybe she was or she wasn't who fucking knows. We were just sitting in like a area where it was like a. Was it called the pavilion? There you go.
00:27:09
Speaker
We were making out. And i um I was young. I mean, this is like eighth, ninth grade. It's like early early on. You're right. To me, that was like the hottest thing ever. And then we were in public. Yeah. And then we went on the Ferris wheel.
00:27:25
Speaker
And we were making out in the Ferris wheel too. And this just happened like the whole day. And my dick is just like, out of tension. Cause like at this age, you're going through puberty and all that. My dick was just hard as fuck the whole day. I got home. My balls hurt. Did you finish yourself off? Of course I did. It didn't make it better. It still took like a recovery period. Oh, for sure. Because it's like, I don't know something. Yeah. Some fucked up thing with like your vessels.
00:27:53
Speaker
With your yeah, your blood vessels because all the bloods to your cock all there. None of my head, all my cock. That's why you start thinking with your wrong head. So by the way, we're talking about all this because this fucking scene is hot as fuck there. They're making out. They're getting hot and heavy. She's like naked almost. He's like almost naked and they start getting steamy again. He goes to reach for a condom and she stops a little fucking cock tease. Yeah, she's like, why are you in such a rush?
00:28:23
Speaker
Yeah, she's like, are you eager? And he puts it down and he starts biting her ear, nibbling on it, which this is like a weird thing that like I knew when I was younger that like the your earlobe is like, if you want to arouse someone, go for the earlobes. Yeah, I didn't know that until like a little later in life. That was like something like you just heard in high school. And then I was like, all right, i just I guess I just know this now.
00:28:50
Speaker
You ever try it? Did it work? It works. So. She don't like it. No, she's not into the the ear nibbling and. She gets mad and then he just handcuffs her back to the bed. And she's like, no, no, no. And he starts choking her and smacking her and he goes on his dominatrix fucking. This is where it's big. ah if you don't like sexual assault. A trigger warning. Big trigger warning. Um, but by stick with it. Stick with it. Yeah. So he's like, you're going to call me, sir. He's like all up in her face. Dude, this line was hard as fuck. I'm going to cut you from one set of lips to the other. Yo. Damn. And then all of a sudden,
00:29:49
Speaker
ah She just says, Mr Snuffle up, I guess. And the scene cuts and the scene just cuts to them in the truck. And she they're talking in the truck again and she tells him, hey, no matter what, just like, just give it to me, even though, even though if I say no, I, I want to really, she literally gives the whole no means. Yes. Right. She's like, what does no mean? And he's like, yes.
00:30:20
Speaker
right and he's like I don't know it's not really my thing whatever and she was don't be a pussy she's like do it she's like abuse me right but I don't know I'm a hundred percent with him though because nowadays that You know, are you victim shaming? No, I'm just kidding. No, I'm not victim shaming. I'm just saying that if I'm the guy in this situation, I don't, i'll be going this I'm not doing this. There's just too many legal things going on here where you can't, you know? Right. But when they're still talking in the truck, she says there's only one word that you can say for you to know that I've had enough. And that's Mr. Snuffle luffagist.
00:31:05
Speaker
Yeah, that's a good point. So Snuffleup, I guess, is there a safe word? Right. No, it's not the safe word. You ever have a safe word? I'm not kinky like that. Wolfie, Wolfie, Wolfie. Oh, sorry. Wolf of Wall Street. Good movie. Yeah. Watch that.

Happy Couple Interlude

00:31:21
Speaker
So, yeah, obviously we know this chick is into some weird ass shit.
00:31:27
Speaker
and they're kissing and then there's this weird flash of something you can't really tell it's not legible and then she backs away kind of shocked and then it just cuts so now we are at chapter four which is the mountain people which is our friends Genevieve and Frederick this lovely sugar filled couple just sitting at a coffee table drinking some coffee they start laughing at each other Yeah, they don't even they're just a happy old senile couple, I think. I love these people. I love them to a point. ah By the way, for everybody listening, it's way too late. But Criterion just dropped a 30% off 4K disk. Just got an email. ah Sorry you guys missed it.
00:32:17
Speaker
may After recording's over, am I after? Take a peek. Take a peek. um This breakfast is crazy. I mean, this is something out of elf. So homie's like, I'm going to go make this breakfast. Sorry, i go ahead.
00:32:31
Speaker
My mouth was watering, dude. This looks so good. No, you don't like it. No, this is some eye hop sugary ass breakfast. Okay. To a point. Once, once you get to what he's putting on here, then there's a point where I'm like, okay, that stops. I agree. So he throws an entire pound of butter to cook four eggs. I work in the restaurants. You don't need all that whole pound of butter for four eggs. You're getting your arteries clogged, clogged up. And he makes pancakes.
00:33:00
Speaker
There's some kind of jam, jelly, whatever, sausage, sausage, whipped cream and syrup. But it's not like, oh, we're going to put the pancakes at six o'clock and we're going to put the sausage at three. It's just a jumbled sandwich pile. Right. It goes like egg, eggs, eggs, eggs, sausage.
00:33:23
Speaker
weird jam thing. that's where Don't put jam on your eggs. All right? Don't put any of this all together in one sandwich. I don't like this. Well, sausage, egg, pancake. I could see that being like a little sandwich thing, you know? Shadow McDonald's. Oh, yeah. Yeah, that's true. Exactly. What ruins it for you? The fact that it's all jumbled together. And the whipped cream. I hate whipped cream. I'm not a fan. oh give me Give me ice cream. Fuck whipped cream.
00:33:53
Speaker
You know what ah what ruins it for me? Well, what why I don't like whipped cream, nobody asked for this. But when you go to like a diner or a restaurant or wherever and you get a Sunday, they just it's just so much whipped cream. It's like, I just want to eat fucking ice cream, man. I don't want to eat this whipped cream. Why are we pretending it's like drinking diet coke or drink regular coke? Give me all of it. Diet coke is terrible. We are an anti diet coke podcast. We probably just lost five listeners.
00:34:21
Speaker
So they're doing they're making a puzzle and I think it pans to the puzzle and we're supposed to know who that guy is. I have no idea who he is. It's either Jackie Chan or Bruce Lee. It's not Jackie Chan.
00:34:36
Speaker
You think it's Bruce Lee? It's some dude, and they're having some kind of weird contest. I'm with it. I want to do it. She's like, I only got two. It's like, who can fit more pieces and they go back and forth, I guess. I think, yeah, I think so. What they're doing is like they spread out when they start the puzzle, they just randomly give each other pieces. And then you start and like, oh, if you can't go, then I go. And it's like, oh, I put two pieces down.
00:35:04
Speaker
Compared to your you know what I mean? Okay, that's interesting. It's like competitive competitive puzzle puzzle piecing I'm i'm fucking with this. I'm I'm gonna I'm gonna bring this up to my fiance. I'm not even gonna lie W we hear the lady banging on the door of the front door. This is the end of chapter 3 is like you're seeing it from their perspective essentially and they open the door and The lady tells him like oh this man is chasing me He's in a truck, blah, blah, blah. And the couple goes, Squatch can't drive no truck. He's getting chased by a Squatch. Yeah, they are big, big foot believers out here, guys. Oh, man. And they go, yeah, we're just old hippies.
00:35:50
Speaker
And Genevieve called, they never tell tell you his name is Frederick. Genevieve called some papa. Shadow coast. Shadow papa emeritus. i
00:36:01
Speaker
And she's in pain. And she they give her, well, they they try to give her a perk, a perk set. But I don't know if they ever actually give it to her. No, so she's like, oh She comes she sits down starts eating his breakfast as old man worked his ass off to make yeah, what a fucking dickhead she's eating their their breakfast and Frederick's like I'm not I'm not a hippie I'm just an old biker and then you'd be cut to Genevieve. She can't find a parker sets. That sucks She was very upset that they were gonna give her Percocets away. She's like, oh, we only have a couple
00:36:37
Speaker
Well, yeah, those are probably those play. Hey, I've never taken a perk, but they probably hit. I haven't either, but I know right now ah I had three teeth extracted about a week ago and about a week ago. And shout out Bobby Schmurda. And he freed yet. Oh, yeah, they freed him, right? OK, good. ah They prescribed me Vicodin. And I can tell why people get addicted to that shit because it feels good.
00:37:09
Speaker
I don't know if you feel good, but you're just kind of like you kind of go like brain dead and like in like a weird comatose state. I only take it if I have pain before I go to bed. I don't take it during the day because that shit's dangerous. I don't want to know about it. Yeah, Jen can't find Genevieve. Not Jen can't find the Percocet. She comes back down and we follow her like down the stairs and. ah Frederick's been stabbed. And. The lady is like, look,
00:37:38
Speaker
I'm gonna have to tie you up. She's like, you got anything around here? Help me out. What's the fastest way I can lock you up, tie you up? And Genevieve's like, well, we're doomsdayers. So we got a shed out back that's got plenty of food, anything else I could possibly need. And she's like, all right, let's go. And you know what? It kind of makes sense for them to be doomsdayers.
00:37:58
Speaker
Yeah, it definitely fits the profile. I think big foot lovers, like, ah yeah. the side's gonna end yeah And they probably made that chain themselves. Yeah. So the whole reason that she ends up stabbing him is because he wants to call the cops. Frederick says, Hey, we're going to, you know, I'm going to let the cops know. And the lady's like, no, no cops do not get the cops involved. And he's like, no, I, you know, I think we should really let them know there'll be a big help. And she's very persistent. Do not call the cops.

Dark Twists and Reveals

00:38:28
Speaker
Yeah. And because he does want to, she just stabs him. She's like wild. The lady is walking Genevieve to the shed and we hear the demon pulling up. And again, the music swells like here comes the big bad wolf. Right. You can hear him hop the fence. Immediately. Jamie's like, yeah, fuck you, I'm leaving. And she runs off and this is where we see the lady take all the frozen meat out of the freezer in their house and just throw it into the yard, I guess. That's the best place for it. And then I wrote, she pops Percocet, so I guess she did take some kind of pill. Yeah. And she closes the lid, hides in there, cuts to chapter two, which is called, Do You Like The Party? This is my favorite chapter because this is when the movie really hits you hard. Right. So where we cut back to the
00:39:27
Speaker
End of chapter one, which if you remember, they were kissing and she saw some kind of flash and she was still freaked out. And then she's like. Do you like the party? And he's like. Sure. And she pulled out a big ass bag of cocaine. Huge. i I don't know how much this goes for on the street, but this bitch got it. And she goes, oh, it makes me horny, which is kind of crazy. Yeah, I mean, I've never done cocaine, but.
00:39:56
Speaker
From what I know, it just makes you like I thought you can't fuck like makes you really energetic. Yeah. And she's like, let's just do it. It's my birthday today. He's like, oh, upset the birthday girl. It is a very cool. There's a split diopter of her lining coke rails from the do. And you just see the demon laying on the bed in the background like, am I going to really do coke right now?
00:40:23
Speaker
Like he's just kind of like, what the fuck am I going to do? He's like, I haven't done this in a while. So they end up doing Coke and they get hot and heavy and she's like, no, I don't want this anymore. And demon is angry. He's like, are you a cock tease? Like, how come we can't fuck? And then she goes, yeah, I was lying. Coke doesn't make me horny. And then she goes, if you can, if you're able to fuck me in five minutes, we can fuck.
00:40:54
Speaker
And the demon gets up like, yeah, you know what? Fuck this. I'm out of here. We follow the lady into the bathroom and she's smacking herself in the face, the head. And she opens her purse and pulls out a knife and a taser and does like the it to take with the taser and The whole room is red. It was a very good setup, in my opinion. Oh, it looks so cool. Smacking herself in the head. She pulled a knife and a taser out. it's So she walks outside and the demon is drooling, crawling on the floor. He can't walk. She drags him back in the hotel. This looked pretty cool the way they filmed this.
00:41:44
Speaker
Uh, and she lays them on the bed and she's like, yeah, I gave you ketamine. Whoa. which I didn't even see her like the sleight of hand when she was laying out the coke rail. Like I didn't catch it. There's a very slight moment where you're looking kind of from the demon's view and all you can see is her back and she kind of, she like trickles out a line of cocaine and then she goes back in her bag real quick. It's very slight. Okay.
00:42:10
Speaker
So she puts on love hurts on the radio. That's like the theme. Whatever it is movie. Yeah. And sticks a sock in his mouth. Kinky. She pulls a knife. She gets on top of them. And the angle is just her back. So you can't see what she's doing. But you hear a taser. You hear him be like, hmm, hmm, like not having it. Like he's paralyzed because Academy overdose.
00:42:38
Speaker
Then she goes in the bathroom and she's cleaning blood off her hand. And I wrote such a subversion. I was still in shock of like, Oh, fuck. Like she's, this is when it clicks. She's the murderer. Yeah. So she's going through his stuff in the bathroom, finds his cell phone, throws it in the toilet, takes her wig off. It's a wig and reveals this is the same. This is the lady. Her wig is red and the lady that we saw earlier, her hair is blonde. And then she sees his wallet.
00:43:07
Speaker
So she's going through his wallet, finds some money, takes the money out, sticks it in her bra. And then she flips, you know, the little wallet flaps over. And what do you see? A police badge. Yes, he's a cop. And you're like, oh, I mean, to me, some people think the twist was obvious. This is such a great twist. Yeah, I really loved it.
00:43:34
Speaker
um
00:43:36
Speaker
So a lot of people were on letterbox comparing this to high tension, which if you haven't seen it, don't, but it's a similar twist, but this one does it way better. So she's like, Oh, fuck, he's a cop.
00:43:57
Speaker
And then we see that she carved her initials into his chest, which is just twisted fucked up. So the initials are E L and I guess she stabbed them in the throat. She goes to or, or tries to like, now you're going to go to sleep. He shoots her with a gun, which I fucking forgot to mention. When they walk into the hotel room, he had a, they show a gun strapped to his ankle.
00:44:25
Speaker
He had it as ankles all the time, so he shoots her and he misses most of her face and gets like just her ear. And she's like, Oh, fuck it. She runs off. And, uh, she's yelling and screaming and this guy comes out from from next to me. He's like, what the fuck is going on? hold on He has a gun. And the guy's like, well, I have a gun too. She runs to the reception and she's asking for help, but she does this so good of like playing the victim, like always he coming after me. And she's freaking out. And what I didn't like about this scene is the receptionist and the other lady, Tonya, fuck Tonya.
00:45:05
Speaker
are just like, yeah. Like if someone ran into a public space with half their ear blown off all bloody, it was like somebody's chasing me, I'd be freaking the fuck out. Right, she's like, you gotta lock the doors, you gotta lock the doors. And she's like, okay, calm down, we don't have to do that just yet. What are you talking about? So, Tanya wants to leave. She stabs the receptors in the throat, because the receptors like chill out, bruh.
00:45:30
Speaker
And she makes Tanya give her some bandages, her clothes and her car. Yeah. Which is how she got the clothes that she was in from the opening of the movie. Red jumpsuit scrubs type fucking thing. She takes the ah the clothes, the car, their bandages, and we cut to chapter six, which is called Who is Gary Gilmore?
00:45:57
Speaker
And chapter six is picking up where we left off from chapter five, which is when he found her in the freezer chest. So he has a gun chara to

Resolution and Themes

00:46:08
Speaker
her head. He pulls her out, he cuffs her to, doesn't pull her out, he leaves her in there, he just cuffs her hand to the freezer. And they're having a conversation. And the lady tells this story about but this guy, Gary Gilmore, which again, chapter six is called Who is Gary Gilmore?
00:46:26
Speaker
And this is a guy that was like at the end of his rope to had a, you know, was not the greatest person. And instead of going to jail, he was like, just give me the firing squad. Like, just kill me. She want to be dead. Right. Right. So that's pretty much. I feel like how she wants to go. Right. That's how I took it. Yeah. I mean, she's she's going to keep running to evade jail. And I feel like her her mantra is like, I'm going to keep doing this until either. I I die.
00:46:56
Speaker
from natural causes or I get like shot. I get got got. He calls somebody, I think it was Ed. Something like that. And he's like, I got myself into a bit of trouble. But you don't know who he's calling. I assume it's a cop. We find out it's a cop, but you don't really know who he's calling. I um i assumed it was like his police department. Sure.
00:47:19
Speaker
he He just gave a lot of personal information that I was like, I don't know what you're talking about. Like, I don't know like if you're disclosing this information to a cop. And ah the demon puts together that she is the electric lady who is this serial killer murderer. That they've been looking for. It's a roll reversal. Yeah, it's a really good roll reversal. So she says,
00:47:47
Speaker
no like what we felt back there was real love ah she's like love hurts is their song forever and it never won't be he's like yeah maybe uh then she just she pulls out some, the bear spray from the, from earlier sprays him in the face and bites a chunk out of his fucking neck. Holy shit. This was gruesome. Cause it happened so fast. I was like, what the fuck is going on? Right. And then he falls over and he's like bleeding out and she spits the chunk out of her mouth. It's just lying on the ground.
00:48:24
Speaker
and they cut to his body. This was disgusting. You literally see like the little hole like open up, spread open, and the blood shoots out. It was really, it was great. It's some it's some good gore.
00:48:39
Speaker
So the lady kind of pull votes herself, not pull vote, but like throws herself out of the freezer, but her arm is still stuck to the. Yeah, she's chained to the handle. Yeah. And you see her trying to grab his body and drag it towards her. She's trying to, and then she like kind of caught up with like ripping her own hand off. She's like tugging on her hand. A little Gerald's game action, maybe. Oh, a little de-gloving.
00:49:02
Speaker
She's trying to get the keys. She's trying to pull his body to get the keys, presumably. Right. And then we hear people enter and she grabs the gun that was, you know, strapped to his ankle and she pulls her pants down and just starts playing victim. Yeah, like, I guess probably like, oh, he sexually assaulted me, I'm assuming. Right. I think she's going for it. And this whole dynamic was really interesting.
00:49:30
Speaker
So it's a male older cop and a female cop who could be like in her late 20s early, like ah like a young female, right? Like she seems brand new to the force. And he's like, we don't know what's going on here. Leave her cuff there. And the woman's like, she was assaulted. We had to free her. Like it's, we had to let her go.
00:49:48
Speaker
And they're like arguing about it. And the lady is like, oh, yeah, he has he was all coked up. He has coke and she must have planted the coke in his pocket. Or I guess he grabbed it when he left. Right. Because he needed to get the ketamine out of a system. He needed the energy. So he just starts snorting a bunch of coke. Exactly.
00:50:06
Speaker
And this is fucking stupid. The female cop's like, oh, just because I have a vagina, you're not gonna listen to what I have to say. she's And he was like, he's like, we have to call it in. He's like, I don't care that you have a vagina. I care about this crime scene. Yeah. Also, I guess like the cop and the demon are our friends because he was like when she points out the coke he's like almost disappointed he's like fuck he's doing coke like are you like went back to it yeah it's it probably like some pre drug abuse right but so the thing i hate i was talking about all characters are great in this movie except i hate this fucking female cop so much she's annoying she's very annoying she's not a good actor but
00:50:59
Speaker
Again, with the role reversal, I feel like that's like the main um yeah the gender roles here. are yeah Gender roles is probably like the main plot line or message because she she's like, oh, we got to trust the woman. She's the victim.
00:51:16
Speaker
And in society, that's typically how it would go, how it would play out. Right. But the trailer does such a good job of showing the opposite. And as the male cop says, he's like, I've been on the force longer. You were in diapers when I was, you know, starting the um force. He's like, he's like, so we need to get back up in here and figure out what's going on here.
00:51:42
Speaker
So he ends up just agreeing with or, you know, like seceding to the female cop, they uncover and it cuts the all them in a cop car. And as they're driving, we see Jen run up to the police car, like out of the blue, and she's like crying hysterical because of, you know, her husband's dead and she was almost locked in a shed. And at this point, the lady realizes oh she's gonna wrap me out and she just a Fucking laser beam of a bullet in a tight window and just right in the face pink mist right in the forehead and As soon as this happens, it's like the realization of like, oh she's the killer and the ladies like oh No, and then the mail comes like are you fucking kidding me? he he Yes, he looks at her. He's like you dumb bitch you dumb bitch and he ah
00:52:42
Speaker
So the lady makes the cops give her the guns and she lets the female cop go because the female cop let her believed her lie. Yeah. She's like, I appreciate what you did for me. Now just run. So the male cop and the lady drive off and they, then it cuts to what's called the epilogue, the electric lady. So they're pulled over and the cops like, what are we doing here? And the lady's like, well, I want to think.
00:53:11
Speaker
And she's like, you know, I'd rather not kill you if I don't have to. And the cop is like, oh, it's you're the electrical lady. Why did you kill all those folks? All those folks, such a fucking country thing to say, all those folks has already said. I almost put that in my did I put that in my Instagram story? Folks. I really made me cringe when I was typing. it I hope I backed it out. Oh, for the episode we published today. Yeah, I was like, this is a good one, folks. And I was like, oh, well I hate that word. That yeah makes me cringe.
00:53:39
Speaker
oh he so he's So she says, sometimes I don't see humans, I see devils. And then this was really interesting. The moment they make eye contact in the rearview mirror, because it kind of looks like he sees somebody coming up behind them. But I think they just make eye contact and she shoots him right in the head and you see his blood splatter. The camera view is over top and the blood just shoots out to the windshield. much julia Yeah.
00:54:09
Speaker
Now this is a very, cause you see like a brief flash of something red in like when she sees him. And I i think it's like ah the devil, right? Sure, it could be, yeah. So in the moment I didn't like this, but thinking back on it, I do because it's almost like she has some kind of psychological, some kind of mental illness.
00:54:34
Speaker
Yeah, for sure. Yeah, definitely. You're a secret devil everywhere. Right. Because at first, when I was watching it, I didn't like it because I was like, oh, are they going the stupid supernatural route? But then I thought about it. I'm like, no, she has some kind of mental illness, schizophrenia, something like that. Yeah, she sees things for sure. yeah She's a fucking psychopath. So she gets out after she kills him and smokes a cigarette. And this lady is driving on the road and she's still all bloody. So she just plays victim again.
00:55:03
Speaker
falls on the ground and was like, you need to help me. And the lady takes her ah into her truck.
00:55:15
Speaker
And. She goes to pull a gun on the lady. And the lady kills shoots first. And Shadowhan Shadowhan, it's not. I don't think this scene is well shot.
00:55:32
Speaker
Because you can see her try to grab at it, but it's not great. Yeah. For some reason, the end of this movie gave me big in a violent nature. Oh, of course. Yeah, I was going to say that. Yeah, absolutely. How the I mean, the violent in a violent nature, the whole last 20 minutes is pretty much the scene. And this was only like five minutes. So it's almost excusable. Right. ah So they don't really show her gang.
00:56:00
Speaker
The camera is on the lady and she gets shot, but you don't see a bullet wound. You don't see anything and the gun is still kind of like right there. Yeah, but she's going like kind of like fading in and out of consciousness. She's already lost a lot of blood now. She can't get the energy to get the gun up. Sure. I still don't love it. No, that this is the only part of the movie I do not like. And then it's them driving and it's just her face as are driving, like you said, in a violent nature vibes for sure, for like three minutes. It's just her face. And then it' slowly her her face is like it's going blue.
00:56:36
Speaker
It's like I'm realizing what I did and this is the end of the line. Not what I did. I don't think she's any regret for what she did, but like this is the end of the line for her. And it all like phase to black and white. And I guess it's her like dying like she's dead. Right.

Ratings and Comparisons

00:56:50
Speaker
And that's the end of the movie.
00:56:53
Speaker
I think it's fucking amazing, even though we even even we took notes and still fuck with the timeline. Right, because it's like it's all over the place, but in a good way. Yeah, it really works well. Yeah. So what are you rating this on letterbox? I'm at a four and a half.
00:57:15
Speaker
What are you at for? Are you pushing five? Besides that, I kind of want to get the whole last like five minutes of the movie out of my head. Yeah. Because it's not going to, that last five minutes is not going to make me not want to rewatch this film. So with that in mind, I am honestly first in pod history. I am giving this a five star. Wow. I mean, I don't blame you. I,
00:57:44
Speaker
Would rather the half star that's missing for me, I would just rather watch it again. Just like for sure, make it a five star. So four and a half to star. But I mean, this is one of my favorite movies of the whole year. It's in its top three, top four, for sure. This was a surprise for both of us. ah Yeah, I was going to talk about that, too. I mean, there have been so many surprises here, so I got. It might be better than Sing Sing. It might be number two for me.
00:58:15
Speaker
What do you have as number one? So number one, no one's seen. And I know that it's called The Taste of Things. It's a French cooking film about grief, love, cooking. I work in the restaurant industry, so it's very personal to me. ah So it's I give that a five star. That's an amazing movie. It's like watching Chef's Table on drugs. OK. And then a number two, I have Sing Sing. If you haven't seen Sing Sing, what the fuck are you doing? Go see Sing Sing. That's number two. It's a four and a half.
00:58:45
Speaker
And then I have number three, I used to be funny. Little indie film that no one saw. And then number four, I've hit men, but I'm probably gonna throw a strange darling at number three. okay I don't know what's better than Sing Sing. Sing Sing really hits um a different in a different way. I need to watch that. Yeah. Is that gonna be up for Oscar nomination?
00:59:11
Speaker
I think Sing Sing is super Oscar bait. Yeah. Like best picture type shit. I was going best picture, but I mean, it's going to be nominated for sure. That's what I meant. Yeah. Yeah.

Episode Wrap-up and Future Reviews

00:59:22
Speaker
um So for me, it's definitely it's in the top three of this year, and I've seen 44 2024 releases. Damn. So. Yeah, we both love it. I'm happy. I'm happy you loved it, too. Sure. I saw like 40 before you did, like, fuck, I hope he likes it. Yeah. Uh, the whole, the whole reason I didn't see it earlier was because of the drive I needed to have a whole day off to go see it. Cause after work, I would have not gotten to the theater until probably like seven, 38 o'clock. So yeah, I really recommend this movie to anybody. Please seek this out.
01:00:05
Speaker
Hopefully by now it has a little bit more of a wider release because it did seem quite limited. And usually I feel like um it's going to get a lot of notoriety. So hopefully if you can't make it to your theater, hopefully within like the month or two that it will be available to rent or stream somewhere. Yeah.
01:00:25
