The difference between someone who has found their voice and someone who hasn't

Shaping Your Pottery with Nic Torres

The Episode explores the concept of finding one's unique voice in pottery and emphasizes that the key difference between those who have found their pottery voice and those who haven't lies in belief and confidence. The Host, Nic Torres, challenges the notion that the quality of one's pottery determines their voice. Instead, he argues that belief in one's own style, theme, and direction is what defines their voice, regardless of the pottery's appearance. Nick offers advice on developing confidence in one's pottery work by creating a large quantity of work, seeking inspiration from other potters, and trusting one's instincts. The script concludes with an invitation to take a short quiz designed to help potters assess how close they are to discovering their unique voice.

The Belief in Finding Your Pottery Voice

What is the difference between someone that has found their pottery voice and someone that hasn't found their pottery voice? What is up Shaping Nation? This is Nick Torres here, and for those that don't know me, it's my mission to have potters like yourself to give your own unique voice with your pottery. You see, very recently, I was thinking of the question, what is the difference between someone that's found their voice and someone that doesn't have their voice? What is that difference? And it may surprise you, but it actually has nothing to do with your actual pottery.

You see, the big difference that depicts whether we have our own voice or not is whether we believe we have our own voice or not. If you don't think you have a voice, you don't have a voice. You probably won't have a voice. Your pottery probably doesn't look as good as you want it to because you believe that you don't have a voice.

Confidence and Style in Pottery

You don't have a style. You don't have your own theme for your pottery.

And those that believe they have a voice, that's how you know they have found their pottery or they have this feeling that they're just going in it in a great direction. And those that don't have that feeling, they don't have that voice yet. They don't have that confidence in their pottery. And that's what it is. It's a confidence in your own pottery.

It doesn't matter what you make, it doesn't matter if you're making boring pots, it doesn't matter if you're making super large sculptures, it doesn't matter. The thing that matters most is if you believe you have found your own unique voice. You could be making the most boring piece of pottery, it could just be literally a cylinder and a clear glaze and that's it.
00:01:44
Speaker
That could still be your voice. The reason why is because if you believe that is your voice, then you are heading in the right direction. You're going to start heading because if you believe in you in that voice, now you can start doing things that will excite you.

Building Confidence Through Practice

Speaker
You start doing these things, maybe you are interested in glazes and you are, that's the type of voice that you want to have. Great. Go in that direction. As long as you believe that is the direction you should be going, continue in that direction.
00:02:13
Speaker
But if you don't believe, if you don't have that confidence in your own pottery, you're never going to be able to find your voice. It doesn't matter how good your pottery looks or how boring it is or how whatever. If you don't believe you're heading in the right direction, you don't believe you have found your voice, you believe this pottery is good enough.

Speaker
You're never ever going to find your voice. So you have to develop that confidence in your work. But how do you develop that confidence? The simplest way to develop that confidence is simply just make a shit ton of work. The more work you make, the better your voice is going to show up, the more confident you can get in yourself and your work. So just simply make a lot of work. You also get around other potters to help you

Get new ideas, get new fresh ideas and see if this is the direction you should be going. And the third way is to listen to your gut. Listen to your gut and see if this is where you want to be going. This is where it's exciting you. So those are the three reasons or three ways that you can build confidence in yourself and the difference between someone that's found their voice and someone that hasn't found their voice.
