The 'Ugly Middle' in Pottery Creation

00:00:31
Speaker
What is up, shaping nation? This is Nick Torres here. And um' in this episode, I'm going to be talking about the the ugly middle that we all go through with our pottery. And sometimes you just really need to trust the process. So you see, very recently I have been making a Winter Soldier mug. And even before that, I was making a Punisher mug. And with the Punisher mug,

The way it was coming out and the way I was sculpting it, it didn't look all that great to me. It just like it looked fine, like it looked OK, but it looked all that great to me. But I stuck with the process and I kept with it. And so after painting and after underblazing everything and adding all all the other stuff, I still wasn't really totally, totally psyched about it.
00:01:22

And then I did the final firing for the Punisher Monk. And when I took it out, I thought it looked absolutely incredible. I thought it looked absolutely incredible. And before that, everything else kind of like crapped me.
00:01:41

But the final result looked absolutely amazing. And that's what matters right there. The final result.

Trusting the Process

00:01:48
Speaker
Sometimes you just have to trust the process, especially if you are making a sculpture. Sometimes we have this big idea what our sculptures are with when we're making pottery. And we have a certain idea of what we want it to look like. And sometimes we're just not trusting the process enough.
00:02:07
Speaker
And we we start looking at the pottery and we start looking at the pot and we start thinking, well, this looks like crap, so I'm going to toss it and restart it. I know I've done that a couple of times. I know I've done that a lot throughout my my journey. And I'm sure you have as well. But sometimes you have to trust the process a little bit. There's steps you have to take to make what you actually want to make.
00:02:28
Speaker
It's gonna be ugly. It's gonna look ugly. It's gonna be a process that doesn't necessarily look that good And especially like I gave example with the punishment mug and now recently with my a winter soldier mug that I'm making Before I made it or before I finished holding it, it wasn't looking all that great. It wasn't looking like it looked OK, but it wasn't looking all that great. And then I started adding some more clothing detail and then I started adding some more of the hair and then added the mask.
00:02:58
Speaker
And it's looking a lot better. And now I know that when I paint it, I can I can make it look 10 times better after I underclase it. You have to trust the process. The process may be long. Sometimes the process may be short. Whatever that process is, you have to trust it because the the thing that matters most is the end result. It doesn't matter what you're making, doesn't matter how you make it. But the end result matters more than the journey that you get there to get to make it.
00:03:28
Speaker
You know, especially this applies to if you are learning pottery as well. If you are a new beginner and maybe you have just started wheel throwing and maybe you found this podcast because you are interested, more interested in pottery. If you are a beginner, then you have to trust that process as well. Your pots are going to look like absolute crap at the beginning and that's OK.
00:03:49
Speaker
But you have to trust the process, keep putting in those reps so that you can make the party that you know you could be making in need, that you're envisioning for your but yourself. When you take it out of that kiln, you could see it for yourself to me and your vision actually comes to life.
