Speaker: Is making fan art actually your own artistic voice? What is up, shaping nation? This is Nick Torres here, and this episode, I'm going to be talking a lot about fan art. Whether you should make it, whether it's actually voiced. You see, for the longest time, I was really against the idea of making fan art, because One, I didn't come up with the design. I didn't come up with all the the things that needed to be due to actually make the character come to life. right I didn't come up with the story. I didn't come up with anything else. And so I was very against it for the longest time. But very recently I started making some more sculpture work onto my mugs and I wanted to get the details a lot better.

Speaker: And originally I was going to make the Scorpion from Mortal Kombat and I started doing that but then I watched the Deadpool Wolverine movie and I got really inspired by that movie. I liked it so much that I just wanted to make a Wolverine mug and that's exactly what I did. I ended up making a Wolverine mug and I made a Deadpool and Wolverine mug where they're like side by side together.

Speaker: And I did that and it was so much fun for me. I truly enjoyed it. I absolutely loved it. But is it actually your voice? Is it actually your pottery voice? So this this answer is yes, but it's also no at the same time. What do I mean by that?

Speaker: so Obviously, it's not your your voice Truly truly truly because you didn't rate the character, right? somebody else made the character somebody else did the character and they made the story and I want to I don't want to say copyright, but it could be copyright, but You're you're kind of copying what they are doing And that is okay because at the other end of it. It is also yes, it is your voice and

Speaker: There are plenty of people I know and I've played plenty of people I've interviewed where they make fan art or they make anime style mugs and they make anime style mugs because it's fun for them. it They enjoy it. That's what they like doing. They make a bunch of graffiti anime style. They make different illustrations with for anime art. And yes, it can be your voice.

Speaker: But the point where it doesn't become your voice is if you're simply modeling or copying every single thing from whatever you're trying to do, right? For me, yes, I may be making sculptures onto my mugs. I may have made the Wolverine, I may have made the Deadpool mug, but it's not a full on copy. It looks pretty damn close to Deadpool and Wolverine, but that's okay.

Speaker: because I am enjoying what I'm making. The most important thing when you're you're finding your voice is if you are enjoying what you're making. And that right now is my voice because that's what I'm making. That's what I am just saying. I just want to continue making more things like that. I want to I want to sculpt a thing on the mug. I want to make turn it into my own painting. I want to add all the black wash to it and I want to do all those things. And that is my voice.

Speaker: Now, if I had a character of my own, that would also be my voice. But the thing is, coming up with a character is extremely, extremely hard. Especially if you're trying to get all the details right. When there's another character that's already been out there, and it's okay to put it onto your mugs. It's okay to put it onto your pottery. Just because somebody else is doing it doesn't mean you can't do it as well. It's oh okay to do those things.

Speaker: If you are someone that thinks that making fan art isn't truly your own art, I want you to start getting out of your own head a little bit. Don't think of it as making or finding your voice or making it something that is truly unique to yourself. Make it as something as doing something fun for for yourself.

Speaker: You don't always have to make things to sell, right? You don't always have to make things to that are going to try to sell. Sometimes all you need is to make something that is fun. And that's where fan art can come is this where you're making things that are just fun for you. Now, if you want to go down the route of trying to sell your pottery of fan art.

Speaker: Go ahead and try it. Try it out. And if something goes wrong, something goes wrong. Who cares, right? If you are enjoying what you're making, you're enjoying the fanart that you're making, you just want to continue making this type of stuff, go do it, go pursue it. Because it doesn't matter if somebody else has already done it before,

Speaker: they You're showing appreciation by making that fan art. You're showing appreciation to the to the author, to the writer of the comic, of the person that made the anime, the person that made the superhero movie. You're showing appreciation simply by making the art.

Speaker: And that's how I think about fan art now because for a while I definitely didn't want to make it because I was definitely scared and i it wasn't my own. But I am enjoying this 10 times more than trying to come up with my own characters simply because it's already done before. And it's OK. You're paying homage to the author, to the writer as well. So that's my take on is fan art actually your voice? Thanks for listening to this episode of Shaping Your Pottery.
