Importance of Experimentation

00:00:40
Speaker
Are you experimenting long enough with your pottery? What is up, Shaping Nation? This is Nick Torres here. And in this episode, I'm going to be talking about why you need to spend a little bit extra time experimenting before you decide to move on to something new. We've all been there when we get bored with what we're making.
00:01:00
Speaker
and it's okay to get bored and it's okay to move on new things but are you experimenting long enough before you decide to move on to the next thing what I mean by that is that we tend in pottery there's so many different techniques there's so many different things that we can do that we all want to do them all the time. and I never experienced it myself. Where, especially like when I was first learning how to sculpt, I would get bored making one design and so I would move on to the next design. But sometimes I'd have to force myself to stay a little bit longer on one design. So I mastered that technique. I mastered making a bicep, mastered making a neck. And I forced myself to stay a little bit longer for one reason.

because the

Success Through Persistence

more you do it, the better you get. And it's okay to move on from things like I said earlier, but it's about finding when you feel more confident in the idea. There's also the part where ideas don't always come to life as well. You are, let's say you are, you have this crazy idea to make a a water fountain out of your pot pottery and whatever everything you seem to do just seems to not be working and the more you do it i is not working out the way in your favor
00:02:27
Speaker
and And so you decide to move on to the next thing, next idea. But what if you stuck with it for just a little bit while? Could you imagine to the results you could have? Have you ever heard that saying that people tend to stop two too close to the gold?
00:02:46
Speaker
right They think that they will never find the gold after digging for so long and they stop just shy of finding the gold. It's the same thing with our pottery.

Embracing Challenges in Pottery

00:02:59
Speaker
Sometimes I believe that too many people are moving too quickly to the next thing, but you have to stick with things for a certain amount of time sometimes.
00:03:10
Speaker
It's okay to be bored. It's okay to to have frustrations when you're failing in this pottery. Pottery is very frustrating sometimes, but you have to stick with it. Experiment long enough for certain things so that you can make your vision come to life.
00:03:25
Speaker
Otherwise, you're never going to be able to make pottery that you can truly call your own. You're not going to be making pottery that is looking absolutely fantastic, or simply just getting you your pottery to stand out as well. You have to stick with it long enough in order to make an idea come to life. If you move on too quickly, then your idea is never going to come to life. And there are times when you are going to experiment and it's going to happen right away. But that is an odd rarity. You have to stick with the idea. You have to stick with the technique because that's how you learn. That's how you build your skills. That's how everything comes to life by staying with the experiment long enough until it comes to life.
00:04:07
Speaker
Otherwise, you are never going to grow as a potter. Your potter is never going to look that good. And you're always going to be making some mundane things. And I don't want to be making mundane things. I want you to be making pottery that represents yourself, that you could call your own. And you do that by experimenting and doing it for long enough to be able to make that idea come to life.
