Speaker: We're the Seinfeld of podcasts. I was just going to say the Seinfeld of podcasts. That's right. That's right. How are you, man? I feel like I haven't talked to you in like 14 years. I know. i was just thinking that, you know, the good old days when i actually used to hear from Jared on a weekend, but not anymore. yeah I was thinking about the times where you used to send me pictures of your builds and now I just, I'm, I'm just a follower on Facebook and that's right.
Speaker: ah I got to start this this podcast by might be one of the funniest things I've seen in a long time and I'm so looking forward to it you have Netflix of course right yeah yeah so premiering tomorrow on Netflix is it's funny because Kim Kim tells me we're sitting in there having our coffee this morning she's like you won't believe what's going to be on Netflix I'm like what And she goes, you remember that Australian break dancer from the Olympics? I'm like, oh, yeah, yeah. They're doing a special on Netflix on her. And it comes out tomorrow.
Speaker: um So I can't. Do you know who I'm talking about? Have you seen this ray gun? you know who I'm talking about? Yeah, I remember. When all the memes came out. So there's a documentary on her coming out tomorrow. And I am so excited to laugh my ass off and watch this. Yeah. Is it going to be like a short? It's like it like a YouTube short.

Speaker: So she like, you know, supported this. important this biography Yeah. this is So I'm, we're pretty excited to watch this documentary tomorrow.
Speaker: um yeah that made me laugh this morning when when kim's excited about watching this documentary ah yeah totally off topic to knives but it made me laugh this morning um yeah but uh yeah just uh oh sci-fi challenge came out last week or while this past weekend yeah have you seen any of the videos I have seen some of the builds, but I haven't seen any of the content yet.
Speaker: um But I'm actually just today on my way home. I started thinking about it and I i got a little excited. So i'm I'm eagerly awaiting to, what's that called?
Speaker: Data dump, knife dump, a bunch of cool ah videos and check out what everybody's into. Because like I said, I've seen a couple of them and yeah, it looks cool. Yeah, I haven't actually watched.
Speaker: I started watching like the first 10 minutes. No, the first like three minutes of Martin's video. um Okay. That's the only one I started. He's doing this stormtrooper blade, which is cool. But um and I'm and I have power hammer envy in the first three minutes of watching his video.
Speaker: But that's the first thing I got out of that video. I'm like a good old power hammer. ah Yeah. just we Just watching it move metal. I'm like, oh fuck you, Martin.
Speaker: They're expensive. ah yeah Not everyone can afford them, dude. so I can afford it. That's not the problem. I just can't have it. That was a bait. oh You took that motherfucker. You took him up that like the fucking bait that Steve Lockwood just...
Speaker: I did say it. I thought I messed it up and said the right name. ah Steve Lockwood just sent me a picture literally like 15 minutes ago of like, it's probably five or six pictures of the biggest fucking salmon I've ever seen in my life with all kinds of people. And he's like, huh, yeah, you sure plan that picnic at the right time. so You're one of those big ass fucking salmons right now with that one. No, I can afford it. Yeah.
Speaker: But I'm getting pretty good feedback online on mine, my video. It's already over 50K views, which I haven't had a video hit that in a while. So I'm pretty happy about that.
Speaker: Congrats. That's awesome. so i didn't see any of the ah Did everything work out? Because like I said, you didn't send me any ah any pictures and I didn't see what we talked about supposed to be on it.
Speaker: No, it's on it. Yeah, no. The problem is the the light the LED lighting on the handle. Okay. so I left my my myself to like the last minute um to do the pictures.
Speaker: And you really, natural light, it's hard to see that LED strip in the daytime. Okay. Gotcha. So you had to do it at night. so But if you do it at night, then you can't see the blade.
Speaker: So I ended up doing a picture... Oh, in the video, I waited till dusk and I did the thing at dusk. And in ah in the video, there's ah there's a thing. But when I was doing it for, um I couldn't just do the, everyone said like, oh, why didn't you put that in the thumbnail? Because I couldn't fucking get a picture where you could see the blade.
Speaker: In a video, it's different because you're waving the blade around, right? But I couldn't get a picture for the thumbnail where you could actually see the blade and it was dark enough to see the LED light strip. Gotcha.
Speaker: But you see it in the video and I light it up and it it's pretty cool. Where's the, where's the light strip? It goes through all through the handle. Okay. that's what All those little grooves in the handle, those get filled with the, that's what you spent all that time ah filing.
Speaker: That wasn't bad. um It was, there was a lot of, for fuck's sake, when I was trying to fit the battery compartment into the front of the blade.
Speaker: Because every time I'd put it in, then I'd push the blade in. When I would tighten the blade, it would crimp the wire. And then the thing would go off. And anyway, it took me better part of two hours to get that thing together.
Speaker: um But I did it. it was And it worked out. So, oh, here.
Speaker: Oh, we have another podcast exclusive visual for you, ladies and gentlemen. I forgot I have it in the room. And it's dark enough in here that you'll see it.

Speaker: you can't You can kind of see it if I hold the right angle, but there's engraving on the side of the blade. I saw the engraving on the on the picture, so it's like yeah you went over top of the... I should have... The one thing I regret is if you look at the actual blade in the movie, um it is Damascus, and it's random pattern Damascus, almost exactly like what I did, but I should have masked out the flats.
Speaker: so that it didn't etch the flats and it only etched the bevel. Cause that's what it is in the movie. And then you see those like circuit board engravings over the flats. And the Damascus etching on the flats kinda like- Washes it out a little Washes out all those.
Speaker: And what I was actually gonna do, um and I'm gonna do this on an upcoming build. um Did you ever see that it was on Instagram And I was like, that's fucking cool. A guy, um he must have laser etched a blade with pretty deep laser etching, like almost like he was gonna do engraving and then had a ink writing pen. Do you know what an ink writing pen is?
Speaker: I mean, is this a trick question? No, no, no, no. It's sorry. It's a ink. um I forget, but it's, it's goofy looking. It has like a little, like, like a little well on it.
Speaker: and you fill it with liquid and you you and then he's filling the channel with gold cerakote inside of the engraving channel or blue cerakote or whatever color you want yeah and then baking it i'm like that's fucking cool like i'm definitely going to do that in a video so i bought that little pen thing that you could fill with cerakote and you can it draws like really fine lines so you could fill without making a fucking mess, you could fill those engraving lines and then just bake it at 300 and then etch your blade or do whatever you want or do it after you etch, do whatever.
Speaker: So I was going to do that with those you circuit board things. And I just didn't make them deep enough or wide enough, rather. I only made them 5 thou wide. I should have made them 10 thou or even 15 thou wide.
Speaker: So anyway, at that point I was like, okay, I can't do that. And I was trying to think of a way to, to blacken them and I was like I just couldn't because I had to buff it in order to do the etching and to get all the oxides off and blah blah blah anyway um woulda coulda on on that blade but I wish I would have masked off the flats and then it would look better but um still cool yeah but uh it was cool build um I think it'll be a tough one to sell if I
Speaker: But if anybody wants it, you reach out to me. I have no idea what going to sell that thing for. I don't think it'll be much.
Speaker: The budget. The basement budget of Terrell Knife Works. If anyone's an Alita fan and wants a a prop, and it's not a prop, it's sharp. It's fucking sharp. I was like doing the paper slice with the sword in the video. it's It's sharp.
Speaker: Is the handle comfortable? It actually is like, it does not look like chunky. It doesn't look like it would be comfortable, but when you pick it up, it feels your, but it's, it's comfortable because it's got a big swell at the back and it's, you can use it two handed. So it's actually is really comfortable. I did do, and I talk about it in the video, the original handle. Cause I had, um, you, you saw the one that i had 3d printed, which is the actual, like to scale handle, but It's got these sharp ridges on the front and it's very angular and it's super uncomfortable. So the one thing I did to the handles, I rounded those off so you could kind of choke up on it a little bit. And as soon as I did that, it's super comfortable.
Speaker: Okay. Yeah. But the one... we just it looks It looks sizable, to say the least. It is, but it's it's comfortable. Like it it doesn't...
Speaker: Yeah, it's not uncomfortable. It's certainly like you you feel like you could swing that thing around and do some damage and you're not going to lose it and you're not going to, like, it feels solid in the hand. I'll let you hold it next time.
Speaker: but the The overwhelming comment, which I knew I was going to get, is the... And I even say in the video that I do not condone putting cuts in a blade like this, right? And I even said in the video that...
Speaker: I would never do this in a blade. I don't condone it. And that it's not a good idea, but I'm doing it because it's in the movie blade.
Speaker: And if sure enough, you get all these guys going, yeah, I would never put that in a blade. that And then I'm like, fucking, I know, watch the goddamn movie and listen to what I said in the video. And then I'm like, it's a sword that no one is ever going to use. Like, why do you care? Even if it was a stress riser, which it's not because...
Speaker: they're rounded and I'm not an idiot, I'm like, no one is ever going to use Well, that's up for debate. That is up for debate. But okay. i like you just got the I just think you got the sharpening choyle on the right, a little forward on the plate. But I love how people like, it is a sci-fi weapon that is going to sit on a stand that no one is ever going to use. And they're concerned about the two notches in it because it's going to make the blade a little bit weaker. It's not a functional weapon.

Speaker: Hey, Tyrell Knifeworks, full-time bladesmith and maker of, and literally like they took the description on my website of me telling me about me, like, but to Lawrence, like they're sending this to Lawrence and they're confused and think that he is Tyrell Knifeworks. So even spammers are getting us confused and sending him emails thinking that he's Tyrell Knifeworks. I don't know how this happened.
Speaker: And that what I think is funny, why this guy is a dummy is because the guy is talking about how their AI does all of this continuously across your website. I'm like, well, apparently your AI is pretty stupid because you said this to the wrong person and your AI is terrible.
Speaker: God, I hope someone's catfishing you guys. That would be fucking hilarious. I wish I did this with Jeff. God dang it.
Speaker: But isn't that hilarious? It didn't really happen. The AI is, yeah. Yeah, we don't have to worry about the takeover for a little bit.
Speaker: But when Lawrence gets this email that says, hey, Tyrell Knifeworks, like even forget the rest of the email, what it says, the fact that he got an email about Tyrell Knifeworks and then someone else is confused.
Speaker: I think that's hilarious. Oh, dude, he wants to do it all for no upfront cost and share 50 50 with who? Right. doesn't even know who he's dealing with.

Speaker: That's great. I love that. But okay, what's new with you? haven't talked to you in like two weeks. You've been off doing stuff. Presumably work.
Speaker: So you tell me, but. Yeah, it was work. What the hell did I do? Oh, I went to Idaho. That's what I did. Yeah. Dude. it Maybe I'll end with that.
Speaker: No, fuck it. So I have been. and so when I first started this journey. um I traveled a little bit.
Speaker: Right. But with my family and, you know, totally different kind of mindset, right? You know, you you're traveling with your family. You're predominantly trying to find the balance of enjoying yourself, letting your guard down, decompressing, but still being in protector mode because you got your, you know, most precious possessions in foreign places and, you know, complete absolute strangers and you're far away from home.
Speaker: Uh, but through knife making, I've had the opportunity to travel all over the place. And when I started, i was so convinced that I needed to exit California because freedom, like all of the things, right? Like, and After this last trip to Idaho, I came home and I can say this with a hundred percent. going off all the other states right now. give a fuck. There is not a single fucking better place that I have visited in this country that is fucking as awesome as where we live here in the Bay Area, dude. It is fucking, it is perfect. So we take away all the dum-dums, the people, and you know, some things that we have really no control over, but the weather The things to do the amount of things you could do that all, you know, like, you know, i talk about like the four hour radius. We could fucking see and do everything.
Speaker: um it It just it is going to be really if we do end up leaving, it'll be extremely hard to to pick a place because it is really just it is that.
Speaker: it is that much who like overall, like to think about calling somewhere else home. there's just so many factors that I just can't, can't get over.
Speaker: um cause it was hot as, as Hades. It was like, I mean, it's hot here, but like, um, it's just, you know, all these cool places that are high desert, you know? So you just know in a couple months, it's going be freezing balls, you know? So we get, we get a couple months of, you know, some, some high temperatures and then it's perfect for like nine months a year.
Speaker: Like all year. This year has been pretty perfect as far as like, Yeah, no, we haven't even, yeah, we haven't even, i mean, the 90s and I'm always in the 90s. A couple times? Yeah.
Speaker: Yeah. i was to say, I'm always about five to 10 degrees hotter than you. So it it's little more uncomfortable but here. But nevertheless, um that's kind of what I came back with, man. was just like...
Speaker: um it just there's not I don't know what I could deal with more. You got to give up some of this perfect weather. for And that's really what the allure is here. you know And everybody that we bring here, they leave here with that. Okay, I get it. Okay, I get it. And everyone has... A lot of people have ah have a different opinion. But anyways, that's kind of what I came back with because it was hella hot.
Speaker: But yeah, I did... I think I flew in on... Like a Monday afternoon, i was thinking about trying to do like a twilight golf, got off the plane and it was 98 degrees or something like that. so I was like, yeah, no, that's not happening. But I got delayed up and I was really bummed because I didn't get to go check out Brian from Hidden...
Speaker: rose forge um i really wanted to go because he's building the house and i and i i saw the house a couple years ago over where he was seeing and i saw like you know i'm watching it on social media come up and i was actually kind of pumped to go see because i think it's a crazy accomplishment to to build your own house that's just that's just impressive um but i could not work it out so my apologies but i was super uh gracious of of them for the invite and um was bummed that i couldn't couldn't get that done um but because i got pushed good i was because he wants me to go out there in november to teach the folder class yeah but yeah yeah i gotta figure that out we'll see if we can't can't work something out um but yeah the uh
Speaker: I was going to say, oh yeah, i but the guy that I flew in with, his plane got delayed, then we had some late meetings, and by the time it was just, it was it just didn't work out. And then the day we were there for Tuesday was just a long ass day.
Speaker: um And then I flew home Wednesday morning, so it was ah I was beat last week. It was a lot of running. But ah yeah, um that's what I learned from there. i also learned that I love breakfast.
Speaker: I just absolutely love breakfast. What you mean learned? This a new thing. I just haven't realized how haven't. I haven't gone to sit down and have breakfast like I like. Like, you know, when we go out, I'm pretty stickler about it. But I really, really, really, really like it. I had two breakfasts, just sit down. it was it was fantastic.
Speaker: um Did another Shields run. That place is just. Love that place. we're yeah We're definitely going over there. Yeah, I literally called and was like, I'm going and just be, you know, I may not, I may make some bad decisions, my love. Just forgive me if I do. And I had to, I did all right. i didn't.
Speaker: I didn't go in nuts, but you didn't buy some fixing gear that you don't need or some like paddleboard or some dumb. It is simply because i was on a plane. So if I go back there and I'm in a car, it could be an entirely different story. Last time I went there, I think I bought a surfboard. So.
Speaker: Attaboy. That's the kind of impulse I'm talking about. Yeah. I got to re-up on some nicotine and yeah. So that was that. You take down the plane?
Speaker: i guess and you check back in. Yeah, that's no problem. I didn't get ripped off this time, though. The last time when I was in Washington, i don't know if I told you, but I went and I got some and they asked me if I had a phone number.
Speaker: And I was just like, no, no, no. And then they rung me up and it was like,
Speaker: the sign I read was 30 bucks to say, and they charged me like 65 or 66 bucks or something like that. And i'm like, Whoa, Whoa, Whoa. And the fucked up part is cause I pay for things with my watch, like Apple pay on my watch.
Speaker: And I was sitting at the counter and I looked and at the price and I'm like, check this out. I go 66 bucks for what? And went bling. And ran it across the fucking scanner and it fucking charged me. And then I was like, what did you just return it?
Speaker: this she She said, I can't return it because it's nicotine. I'll get fired. And I was like, where's your manager? i was fuck i almost almost went to jail, I think, because I threw a i threw a fucking hissy pit. I'm like, why are you charging me double of this? it's like, well, you said you didn't have a number. And I'm like, I would have gave you number. I know you were going double the fucking price for this. yeah Anyway, so I learned my lesson and got my discounts and on this run. So save myself 60 bucks this time. You know, you should just kick that habit and and then you won't have to spend 60 bucks.
Speaker: Yeah. That's stupid. I'm going to send you an email. I'm going to send fucking Lawrence an email right now.
Speaker: Yeah. But yeah, that was that. um And then I went to see a movie with Lynn on Friday night. We went and saw the Odyssey. Yeah. And what did you think?
Speaker: I liked it. I liked it. I didn't. Yeah. I've just heard it's too long. I don't know what the, I think for, I think for you, because you're that kind of dude, I think it probably would be. Yeah. I'm not watching that at the theater. in No fucking way. I'll wait. I loved it.
Speaker: It was good. It was, it was, uh, there was enough cool people in it um It was enough. It was a good mix of like keeping the action going to not drag it out for too long.
Speaker: And but when it was over, I was ready for it to be over. So, yeah, we saw Spider-Man a couple of weeks ago, like the week it opened. And same thing. Fucking people beside us were talking through it. And I was ready to stab somebody.
Speaker: like One of my favorite memories is when we were at Utah. It was that all over again. Like i was, I was almost up and yelling at this person.
Speaker: Oh, I'm glad he wasn't there. Cause every time I, it's not like you do it all the time, but I was like, man, am I going have to go beat somebody? Yapping around. Yeah.
Speaker: uh this was great because i guess it's been out for a few i actually didn't know much about it at all um i've you didn't know anything about the odyssey nah i'm totally cut off from the real world dude it's not about golf and fucking work or quasi knife making i'm just pretty much out the loop lynn was filling me in on uh we went and had lunch on sunday too so um she was filling in me in on all kinds of uh local drama gossip and the news and shit so i really am kind of cut off so i i didn't know much about it uh so it was good i think i like it that way and there was nobody in the theater there was like we we saw him at imax and it was like 10 people there yeah i was actually surprised it's still in theaters i figured it'd be gone i thought so too but bro imax is fucking loud
Speaker: Holy shit. It's loud. I mean, I'm getting old and my eyesight's telling me that like, like really bad here in the last couple of months. But man, I was like, well, I wish I would have brought my iso tunes to freaking drown this stuff out.
Speaker: The geezer. Jeez. Yeah, I know. Yeah, know. But yeah, that, that was it. And then, uh, I golfed of course. And, uh, dude,
Speaker: There's many reasons I love this sport. This weekend, I didn't break 100. shot 103 both days, back to back. I couldn't hit the fucking ball.
Speaker: It was the most frustrating thing. Yeah, it was pretty bad. Why don't you cry about it? i am You should have seen it You should have fucking seen me. The day i I think the worst day I had was Jared was with me too. and he, that little shit didn't miss a beat.
Speaker: turning around everything I told him as we were playing sports, coaching him and stuff. And you got to let it go. Dad, you got to, it's just game. It's just, shut up.
Speaker: Stop being such a pussy. I couldn't. I was a helpless, dude. I was helpless. I must've dropped frigging sleeve of balls and into the water.
Speaker: it was horrific. It was horrific, dude. Yeah. Yeah. But did get some shop time in. That was cool. Oh, wow. Tell me. Yeah. oh Both days. Yep.
Speaker: I glued up some some some scales. some What are those things called? Liners. And then shaped a handle, ready for a glue up. I ground out. Almost finished a grind on on another knife.
Speaker: Did some hand sanding. um I actually... Realized that if you don't hand sand in one session and you really wait long periods of time before it, you can, and you will forget where the fuck you were on your progression.
Speaker: And then sand it. I, I don't know what I was doing. I think I, I had most of the handle inside of my vice. And my my chef knife is very curvy, you know, and canted.
Speaker: The handle's up high. So I think I had the handle buried. So I have all my lines going good. And then I pull it out and I look at it. And it's like, if you could see the handles up high like this, and then lines go whoop along as the blade kind of swoops up. It looks horrific, dude. I got to redo it.
Speaker: It's that bad. like i was a little weird. You don't have to redo all of them. I don't know. I was just pissed off. I was just like, what are you doing, dude?
Speaker: But ah yeah, so it was cool. I fixed my air. think I did that the week the last time I was in there, though. But yeah, so it was nice. I spent the whole day hand sanding today.
Speaker: Nice. Almost. Not quite. All day? No. The morning. I'm working on this new folder. I'm almost done, actually. And I've never done double bolsters, like front and back bolsters. Okay.
Speaker: So there's like a bolster here a bolster here. Okay. All right. Okay. was going to say, yeah yeah, we do front and back every time. but theres No, no. one Left and right. Front and back.
Speaker: um Because they're Damascus to match the blade. And then there's... Every time I say I'm never going to use mammoth molar again, then I find a nice piece and I like, I think of a project and I curse myself and do it again.
Speaker: So doing really thin pieces of mammoth that molar, this is molar that where the, it runs this way. so like this, like the streaks run this way on the, like lengthwise with the, the blade. Um,
Speaker: Anyway, it was really chippy. Fixed million chips. Went through two ounces of sea Was it chippy because they were a long ways? and Yes and no, because it probably would have been worse the other way. But it depends on which way you're grinding.
Speaker: Because you always want to grind, like, with the lines. But... But because when I'm doing them on scales and then when I'm doing the final grinding, I have to put the blade up. I mean, the handle up to the grinder to do the, the, the rounding.
Speaker: And that's when I was worried about it chipping out the sides. So anyway, it was a pain in the ass, but they're blue mammoth. so the it So I'm going to do blue anodized. I'm going to do file work on the liners, which actually, by popular demand, I'm going to do my Triple T this week on doing file work on liners. So I'm going to show how I do those two different file work techniques.
Speaker: the I'm interested. the one that i'm not I'm not a big fan of the file work on a lot of things yeah generally. ah agree I don't want to put myself into a hot take or anything like that, but. Oh, I will. i I'll put my foot down on this. ha That that fed fucking hot take shits for the birds, dude.
Speaker: I mean, really? You think we're really going to say something so, so controversial? It's going to matter. but can I think it looks good on liners. And plus you only do one side of the liner. You only put the file work on once on the inside.
Speaker: so but yeah i think they look good on the on on the stuff that that i've seen you do yeah that's what i'm trying to say yeah so i'm gonna do i'm gonna do my triple t on that this week and show do two different styles of um well one one i'm gonna do on this knife and then i'll demo the other and how to do the setups and the spacing and all that um but yeah and then i'm gonna anodize it um blue which i haven't done any anodizing it in a while you were talking about that last time i think yeah So I'm excited and I finally i got through all of them the Mammoth and buffed it today and that's when you get really excited when it's like super shiny and it looks it looks awesome. I can't wait to do the, I got the the bolsters up and one side of the blade up to 2000 grit.
