Speaker: Hey folks, welcome to another episode of the Triple T for Knife Makers podcast. I'm your host, Dennis Terrell of Terrell Knifeworks. And as always, I've got my somewhat friend, Jared Sandoval of Echo Blades, being his usual goofy self.
Speaker: Jared, how's it hanging? Left or right or center? or um Yeah, center. Yeah.
Speaker: You're all centered today. You're well-centered. I am actually well-centered. I had a trying day of practicing and applying adulting.
Speaker: At work or is this at home? As more professionally. Yeah. Every now and again, you'll get your, uh,
Speaker: know. I try to focus on trying to be less negative. That was some feedback I got a long time ago. And then you try to be positive, but man, it did. There is a bunch of negativity and sometimes it wears on you. And then there's a point for myself anyways, where, and you could apply this to any situation in your life, but there comes a point where you get motivated I get motivated. He's I statements, Jared. I get motivated
Speaker: and enthusiastic and excited. And then maybe that momentum was, is perceived to be going in the wrong direction.
Speaker: And what what does that mean? Perceived to be going in the wrong direction. ah can't I have to be careful about what I'm saying here. So the perception that matters is probably from above.
Speaker: right so but when you say perceived like you're you're excited about something and you said it's perceived to go in the wrong direction like i well the enthusiasm may not be channeled towards the right subject right there i was i was was kind of veered off into another direction you know but i was kind of hyped up and kind of digging in on some uh okay so somebody realigned your priorities is what i'm sure yeah okay i've had that happen yeah and it was very very fucking irritating and but at the same time i find myself realigning people's priorities on a regular basis
Speaker: And I'm very not critical, but I'm very aware. And i think it speaks volume of the character of the individual who's being realigned with how they respond and, you know, how that goes.
Speaker: And, I had the opportunity today uh, to apply that and to be using all these corporate words. It's not corporate. That's recovery. That's, that's the learned behavior through being a child emotionally most of my life, but it is, um I'm applying it to, to this, to this professional world and, um and trusting that the, you know, the nudge in the different direction is, is appropriate. And, but the whole time I've felt like a whining, screaming little baby on the inside. So, um, kicking, throwing things, you know, fuck this, fuck that. And, uh, yeah.
Speaker: So anyways, I did that all internally. um I didn't have the opportunity to, to, to call or to process it with another individual, but, ah So here I sit today um or this evening in a manner of it's okay.
Speaker: And tomorrow's a new opportunity. And i I'm glad I didn't make a big, I didn't make a mess over something that's probably easily explained. And there's a bigger picture that I just don't see yet.
Speaker: So it was, it was humbling and frustrating and trying to find growth in that is extremely hard. So that's why I say I'm trying to, to adult, but I have that expectation of many others. So I would be a bigger hypocrite than i already am if I didn't apply it when it was directed towards me. So.
Speaker: I remember being on both sides of that. And I do too. Many times in my career where I've had to, can ah it almost feels like just do what you're told and they don't give you the, ah they don't give you the backup information. And then you've had to do that to others where you cannot disseminate the backup information.
Speaker: That's correct. Yeah. And sometimes what do we say? we say everybody has a daddy. Yeah. Right? So you got to do what daddy says. And you it Whether it is daddy saying it or not, I'm trying to be you know hypothetical here. But yeah, it was just there's something there that I felt that I was extremely motivated and and thought I was applying some energy and some m thinking outside the box and channeling my
Speaker: my energy towards a bigger picture. And like I said, realigned and back into and here I sit. there here i sit And I'm learning to smile about it and be good. I just wish I had the who's your daddy sound clip right there. It would be very appropriate right now.
Speaker: But that is okay because that's part of the deal. And like I said, i am ah it's just a process. And since we... if um'm I try to be honest, if anything, and um that's currently where I'm at. So when I say I'm centered, I truly, truly believe that not only is the location of the the situation literally centered right now, but so is my my ah my whole aura thing, just trying to be be okay with how it is. Because there's not fuck all I could do about it.
Speaker: No. Sometimes there's not. Yep. And that's okay. Yeah. And that's all right. So that's that's where I'm at currently right now, but i'm I'm actually feeling pretty good and trying to capitalize or focus on some some bigger wins.
Speaker: um ah As it relates to knife making, I had a small victory this weekend. So um finished tell me yeah I finished up a ah a project that I've been, well,
Speaker: It's fucking close. It's damn near done now. It looked done. You must have buffed it at home or did something. Yeah, I went back and, yeah. i mean i Like I told you, I was buffing the handle. I was sanding the handle, and it is a a hybrid material.
Speaker: And I've done this to myself many, many times to where i I'll progress on to the next grit. And I guess with stabilized wood, it's not you can kind of get away with you don't know You don't see it as much. You don't see it as much. yeah It's not like anything's intentional, but but when there's resin, that shit will... Solid color resin for people. Yeah.
Speaker: It'll show up. that yeah and so I took my time. i had a couple times. Anyways, I got to i got to hang out with my buddy ah Dennis on Sunday. That was i was cool. i was I hadn't realized how long it had actually been since we just...
Speaker: Yeah. And I didn't realize how long we were out there until I went in the house and it was like 615. Yeah. yeah It was a long day. Yeah. We were just, it didn't feel like it was a long day because we were just bullshitting and doing our thing. You were, I mean, you were literally on the other side of the shop and for, for most of the day.
Speaker: And then I think while you were stitching, we were able to finally talk the last couple of hours. Yeah, that was the most stitching I've ever done in a sheath. And it continued today. I put the last stitch in at about 6.15 wow.
Speaker: You didn't spend all day doing it, did you? I mean, i I didn't really work. I didn't start until like 10 o'clock this morning. And I took a couple hours at lunch. And yeah, it was it was a relaxed that relaxed day since I worked all weekend. So I wasn't...
Speaker: Wasn't too enamored to be out there for 10 hours today. And to be fair, you, you've kind of. exceeded uh the timeline on on the things that are really matter so you can kind of take that you know that little yeah i'm working on a bonus knife now um so what a bonus knife that's not what i heard what did you what did you hear i heard bone working on a boner here
Speaker: Now, all I had to do was get that sheath, and I got shit ton knives to sharpen, but I'll probably wait till Monday next week to do that and get them all done in one day.
Speaker: But um yeah, it's bonus stuff now. If I get that folder done this week, great. But I do definitely have to do a Triple T video this week because I didn't do one. i wanted to do one last week.
Speaker: And I fucking couldn't find my memory card, any of my memory cards. I actually ended up buying two new ones because and then I found it. But it was in the wash. Did you ever you never, ever found that?
Speaker: Oh, you erased the the gold video. There was some video a while back where you lost some material that you're pretty pissed off about. Or maybe you did lose the card.
Speaker: No. no What happens, in it's a side effect of um of iMovie. Anyway, I won't go into it, but iMovie does things. And and once in a while, like once a year, i have to clean up the iMovie folder.
Speaker: But if you don't do it a specific way, you'll think you have something, but then you'll move the folders and move it back and create a new one because there's there's like a resource leak in an iMovie. It like creates files forever and you eventually just have to delete it and start over like the file because it just gets bigger and bigger and bigger and it just never goes away.
Speaker: It's fucking annoying and they should fix it. But um if you don't move things the right way, you lose files. I know how to do it now, but I have lost files doing this in the past.
Speaker: Gotcha. Yeah, it's a pain in the ass. I don't know what just triggered that, but ah anyway, yeah I remember you being pissed off about not being able to... You lost some good stuff. or It was the fail, huh?
Speaker: It was the... Yes, it was the the gold dagger fail. Yeah, that's right. Yeah. um No, this one, this week, I'm prepping for...
Speaker: um I'm going to be making at some point, I don't know when it's probably made December at this point, because by November, it's just bonkers. But I'm going to be making some cobalt Damascus.
Speaker: At least that's the plan. um Cobalt in sheets is unbelievably expensive. like Everything's expensive right now.
Speaker: Like you can't buy it anywhere. Cobalt in sheets in like 16th and sheets. It's almost, it's literally impossible to find pure cobalt in sheets unless you buy it in China. And,
Speaker: it just it just cost a fortune like four hundred dollars for like two sheets like this big like i was gonna say okay like it's a sheet it's ridiculously expensive um so i actually in the thing only the sheet form is expensive i bought these they're I can't explain it They're like little, it's like someone took a disc and then stamped it in a press. So it's all squished out and they're like little, almost weird looking discs and it's one hundred percent pure cobalt. I got it was like 40 or 50 bucks for like 20 of these. Okay.
Speaker: But I need to get them in some kind of sheet format that I can forge with some other steel. So. My video this week is going to be, can you forge cobalt into sheets? And I'm going to do a couple of, a bunch of things trying to get this into sheet format. I'll try cold forging. I just want to go through a hole and show people, Hey, this is what forging cobalt is like. and We're going to do it in the, um, in the induction forge and the forge forge and see what works the best. A problem. My hope is to use the rolling mill and roll it out into a sheet.
Speaker: how thick is it well what i have it's variable thickness because it's these little stamped things you'll see in the video um but it uh it varies probably from a quarter inch down to like okay so there's okay so there's so i'd have to squish it and then send it in the rolling mill and yeah But cobalt is one of these rare metals that is actually magnetic. I was just going to say, I'm not familiar with the, the enamor with the cobalt.
Speaker: So the reason that cobalt is attractive to forge with another metal and make a Damascus out of what is one color that's very hard to achieve in Damascus?
Speaker: We can get copper, we can get bronze, we can get gold. What's a color that's very hard to achieve? Blue. Yes. So with cobalt, you can get blue.
Speaker: Hmm. Okay. So I'm tracking that. That's the goal is to have a serviceable knife using, which is clad in cobalt Damascus.
Speaker: And one of my Patreon members is doing this actively. um So I know it's possible. I'm getting some tips from him. nice. but And I've seen some of his product. It's very it's a very hard, finicky process.
Speaker: And it Ferrick will turn it blue? No. It's another another etching process? it's It's both a heat and an etching process, and there's like there's a lot of complicated parts. That is probably one of the most complicated parts to it.
Speaker: Gotcha. So when I actually, hopefully, when I get to that point in a video, at some point in the future, when I make the Damascus, we'll cover... how that's going to happen gotcha so i gotta do some learning and some experimenting and probably making a bunch of mistakes so hopefully i have enough of this cobalt to have more than one try because i'm pretty sure i'm going mess up at least once gotcha yeah so yeah this this week's video is can you forge cobalt
Speaker: So just a good old fashioned forging. Yeah. Hammer. We're going to start there, cold forging it, and then we're going to, um, um, heat it up and do some shit with it.
Speaker: Heat it up and beat it up. That's right. so yeah What are going to beat it with? ah ah Of course, a two bastards hammer. What else would i use? If you guys need a hammer for forging and you want to play with a fat ping, it's...
Speaker: let's you know, and not yours. Oh, okay. It's centered right now. Don't forget. You should go talk to Frank and Nita over at two bad introducing the all new center peen from two bastards, Smithy and supply, the maker of the fat peen, the curve peen, the cross peen.
Speaker: Now there's the center peen. Now there's the center peen right with your spirit. So go check them out at Two Bastards Texas Smithian Supplies on Facebook and Instagram.
Speaker: That's right. Because ain't it grand to have a centerpiece in your hand. That's right. That's right. Oh, but, uh, yeah, that's, um, that's, and that's what I'm doing is the, uh, finishing up that sheath tomorrow and then probably work on another auto.
Speaker: Uh, the shop is giving me angst right now. Cause it's probably the dirtier dirtiest it's been in or over year. it was it was trashed yeah it's not like you i know it's that because i knew i had to finish this sheath and that fucking sheath like the leather when you have to grind leather on the grinder it goes everywhere yeah i didn't help you either ah yeah So, I mean, it didn't matter. because yeah I was laughing one time.
Speaker: One time i was, because you have all the, you know, the grinders, you know, and on the side of the shop and there, there's a few of them and your air, what the fuck dust collection is.
Speaker: You section it off. So anyways, I had the fucking thing on and then I was going to town for a good 20 minutes and I look around like, man, there's shit everywhere. I look down and there's a fucking a cover on the one that's right below me and the other one's just sucking up clean air.
Speaker: I didn't say anything. okay Dummy. I was like, oops.
Speaker: Jared, Jared, Jared.
Speaker: but Yeah. So I got to, I got to finish that, that, uh, that handle. And then, um, I didn't finish it at your spot. So then I, i came home and I just went in there and finished it up and it looks good. I saw it.
Speaker: Yeah. And I buffed it out and that's fun. You rubbed it out. and I rubbed the shit. Oh, sorry. Yeah. And then, but you know what?
Speaker: I, uh,
Speaker: I taped it off and I didn't quite tape it all the way to the handle front. Okay. And, um, the bummer is that I thought that I did a really good job cleaning up everything on the glue up.
Speaker: And I have a very, very small layer. of a thin layer of, um, I'm assuming it's epoxy cause it's not coming off right now. So I used to to have this problem all the time back in the day. so I'm just trying to take my time to, to clean that up and Someone gave tip, um which is to take a used piece of G10 and grind it to a point and then um kind of spray that area with acetone and then you can scrape it with that wedge of G10 because it won't scratch the steel. I used to have a piece of brass because somebody told me a long time ago, but I have a very...
Speaker: altering opinion. i can't remember who told me, but apparently because brass is softer, that that's, it's a post. And Jeff made me this piece. That's, I didn't have to see it. It's,
Speaker: Anyways, it's got a sharp edge, e but it doesn't, as long as you're, it's kind of like a half moon type thing anyways, like oval, but it's got a flat edge and that edge is milled to a point here. So I can kind of rub along the blade and just kind of bump into that, you know, the ah the part.
Speaker: And I can't find that piece. So um I was using, I can't remember who, somebody told me like they make a rubber razors too. And I have a whole thing of those and that's just not getting the job done. It's I'm sure once you kind of get it kind of broke up and then acetone, you could, that'll probably work in a little bit. But anyways, so yeah, I'm at this weird spot where I'm Everything looks great, and I just have this you know eighth of an inch
Speaker: you know um fuzzy film there right towards the the the handle fronts. in them That's what I was just doing right now, yeah trying to mess with it. But i' God knows if I so if i scratch it, or you know um there'll be some, for fuck's sakes, pretty loud.
Speaker: Yeah, I would stay away from... razor blades and things like that i would use g ten i didn't i fought i fought the urge to grab the razor blade yeah even the brass makes haven't done because brass i i know it's not supposed to scratch but you can actually leave brass marks on your knife. Um, yeah. Cause it'll leave little pieces of brass, which is now hard to get off. Cause now a little gold thing. So that's why I like the G time. Um, yeah, I think I'll, I'll try that. That's a good tip. Thank you.
Speaker: Yeah. Or, or carbon fiber. Um, key tends better.
Speaker: Cool. Yeah. No, I'll try that. But yeah. Yeah. So that's where, where that's at. And, um, yeah, it feels good. And that one's going to a neighbor or something you said? Yeah. Nice.
Speaker: Yeah. Nice. He's all stoked. i kind of I brought it over there taped up and because he commented. I put a ah story on last night. He's like, oh my God, that's crazy.
Speaker: i love that There's nothing better than that when your customer's all jazzed up. and Absolutely. And then they're asking you how you did it. and What did he say? He said something that made me laugh. He goes,
Speaker: Man, he goes, that that thought just looks amazing. That looks like professional. And I giggled to myself because I was just busting your balls the other day when you said, I'm a professional bladesmith. I'm Dennis Terrell from Terrell Knifeworks, professional bladesmith. And I chuckled to myself and I was like, yeah, no, we're not we're not we're not pros, but I do know what I'm doing. so And I think if that's anything that I do,
Speaker: well is is finishing out handles and buffing like i get i'll always get a lot of comments on like wow that motherfucker shiny and yeah but i've learned from some really good people so yeah you kicked the ass on that micarta because i used to say i hated micarta um that was probably the nicest micarta finish i've seen that green when you did oh yeah yeah yeah yeah thank you Yeah.
Speaker: I've never struggled with it. Yeah. think Noah was always. but I hate, I hate my card. I've never, ah the only, ah is the canvas micarta, I don't mind the paper stuff, but the, uh, which I still like. That's all I've ever done too, is that, that rag or canvas, something that. Yeah.
Speaker: It's not my thing. Not my thing at all. But, um, anyways, yeah, I'm, uh, I'm not a poser this week. Yeah, good.
Speaker: I did see a bunch of um um output from Makers Camp that was this weekend. Actually, I guess it's still going on until, oh, today actually. Today's Monday, so it would have ended today.
Speaker: um Looks like a good time. They had some ah some new events that I wish they would have had a few years ago. They had some kind of a mock forged in fire kind of event. I didn't know i don't know too much details other than, uh, think it was like the testing version of it. Yeah. Yeah. I think you brought a knife and then they tested it and then there was judging and stuff. So, but Tannon and our, our buddy, uh, Brandon from.
Speaker: Yep. BCK. BCK. Yeah. Yeah. Yep, he won, and it was ah bare blades, and I didn't know the other, or at least I don't remember the other guy. It was the top three, so was between them.
Speaker: Nice. Yeah, congratulations, Brandon. That's awesome. Yeah. And that sounded like a good, yeah, it sounded like a I didn't see any ah horrible weather stories, so that's cool.
Speaker: Oh, no, it pissed down rain. did it? okay i was I was having some flashbacks to the Watergate edition of... Dude, that was ridiculous. I just remember us flint flint napping. Flint napping with four inches of water at our feet. Four inches of water, yeah.
Speaker: Yeah. and there This getting weird. like it was That was bad. I remember being in the grinder area. when there was so much water that the electrical was shorting out. I'm like, what this is not good. There's 220 power and we're standing in puddles and there's things shorting out. yeah Someone's gonna die.
Speaker: But i apparently only it only rained one day. It wasn't too bad. So it certainly wasn't like the that one time. Yeah, that's cool.
Speaker: Yeah, I was kind of i didn't I didn't really see much. I wasn't right. Yeah, I just didn't didn'tcc cruise on the on the socials too much. But after,
Speaker: when you told me it was going on now, that's when I actually started having some, like, oh, I wish I was there. Yeah, I mean, it it looked it looked pretty fun. looked about the same size as the last time we went i mean i saw like a pan shot of uh you know the tape blade didn't look any much too much different but um yeah sure it was a blast it's a good event yeah maybe uh sometime in the future probably won't be next year but um yeah we'll see have to hit that up again yeah yeah it was a fun one um
Speaker: And Blade Show, Blade West was this weekend as well in Salt Lake City. And um our friend Kelly Vermeer Vela went home with three awards. She cleaned up.
Speaker: Nice. She got um best in show for her push dagger. I just saw right before I came upstairs. So that was a beautiful one. And one of her other, I think it was a buoy, got, i don't know if it was best buoy or best fighter whatever it was.
Speaker: But really good. I don't know what the third one was for, but yeah, great showing by her. She's an amazing maker, so good for her. She definitely is.
Speaker: yeah yeah and i hear it's moving it's moving to they say because there's construction at i guess where they hold it in blade west um so they're they're moving it to i think in indianapolis i saw indy i'm assuming yeah i think it's indian indianapolis indiana um Yeah, which is an odd location.
Speaker: I mean, not odd as in like, it's called Blade West, but. I was to it's not very west, yeah yeah. It's kind of not even Midwest. It's it's like Blade Mideast. um Yeah. um Now I got to pull up a map. Where the hell is in Indiana?
Speaker: um Maybe it is more west than I'm thinking.
Speaker: I'm refraining. I'm going to grab my phone if you don't hurry up. ah Where the hell is Indiana? It's between Illinois and Ohio. Oh, yeah. That's like, it's almost the East Coast.
Speaker: It's Replo, Michigan. Yeah, that's weird. I think, and we had this discussion, i think they should have it in Reno. I think that's like one of the best locations they could have for the show.
Speaker: Just cause it's, it's such a, it's got so many good venues. It's got the right kind of knife laws and politics for a knife show. um you got Bay area, you got California that'll go cause it's drivable.
Speaker: You got, you know, Nevada, you got the Idaho people that are pretty close. Um, it's easy to get to, it's easy to fly into. I think Reno, i can, I can't believe they haven't discussed having it Reno.
Speaker: So Indianapolis is, that's like a huge jump from Salt Lake City. So, yeah, but we'll see, we'll see how it does. It's also the problem with the show, I think is that it's moved every three years.
Speaker: Um, I think it's been, it's probably been the longest it's been in Salt Lake City for the last three or four. It's gotta be four because the very first one I ever went to was in Long Beach and then it moved to Salt Lake and that's where it's been.
Speaker: Yeah. Okay. So at least four years it's been in Salt Lake and before then it was yeah Long Beach and then Portland, right? don't remember. first yeah so i just i know it used to be in Portland for a bunch, three, two or three plus years.
Speaker: Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. That was when I was in Long Beach. That was, I just started making in August and then I met you shortly after that and you were like, yeah, I'm going to go. And then I was convinced my wife to jump in a car and drive down there with me.
Speaker: Yeah. That was my first show. Yeah. Yeah. Um, was it, had I been, yeah, that was my very first show. Cause then I went to blade,
Speaker: The next year as a as an attendee, play Atlanta. And I was like, oh man, this is way bigger than than Long Beach was.
Speaker: Yeah, I was going to say, because you we went to Atlanta the next year as and you exhibited. Oh, no, maybe I had gone. You had gone before because you were telling me how how much bigger. Oh, yeah, yeah. Okay, sorry. I had gone to the Atlanta one as an attendee, and then, yeah because then it was the fall. Then I went to that fall. Yeah, yeah.
Speaker: That's what it was.
Speaker: Yeah, yeah. Yes, sir. Yeah. So Blade, Texas is up next, March. had get my ass in gear and get some knives done. Hmm. You're gonna exhibit?
Speaker: No. Definitely not. um No, because I got to do these MasterSmith knives. Like that's my, that was my focus after Austria, but now all of November is classes.
Speaker: um So starting December 1st through beginning of March, so that's really only three months, I got to try to get three knives done in three months. and Okay, it was like, well, can't do three knives in three months. These are like...
Speaker: you know, high level knives. One of them will probably be the dagger, which is probably going to take me a month and a half. um So, or at least a month. Yeah. So anyway, if I can get three knives done for, for May, for March rather, then I'll feel okay about testing in June, but otherwise there's no way I'm testing in June.
Speaker: I might move it out to the Ohio show or next or 2028. We'll see. see Do they do anything at West? No. As far as testing, no.
Speaker: Or Texas.
Speaker: Which is a mistake. hey on West, there's not enough judges to go. But Texas, there is. There's definitely enough Mastersmiths that they could do judging at Texas.
Speaker: So, I wish they would. But, yeah.
Speaker: I think it's just more More things for them to arrange. So they already do it in Ohio, the the ABS hammering in Ohio, which is in the fall in September, I think.
Speaker: September, or October, or something like that. I was not connecting that dot. so Yeah, that's going to be the, that those are the only two places you can test for ABS journeyman or master is Ohio and Atlanta in June.
Speaker: When's the other one? hey I just blanked out. when When's the other one? September, or October. It's in the fall. Oh, okay. i know I don't know exactly. I'd have to look it up.
Speaker: Gotcha. Might even been as early as August. I don't. It's like August, September, or one of those three months. So, but it's a couple of, it gives you a couple more months after i am after Atlanta.
Speaker: And then you could show, you could get feedback in Atlanta. And, you know you don't if you know, if you decide not to test in Atlanta, then you get feedback and you got a couple of months to make some new knives for, or update them, whatever, fix them for the Ohio show. practical hammering
Speaker: So we'll see, see how things go. Talk to me in two months. We'll see what what I'm doing. Okay, I'll do that.
Speaker: oh But you know who doesn't need to wait months and months to get stuff done is the boys at Baker Forge always have stuff going. Whether it's the Core Line, which they always have in stock, or this week's drop, which is Iron Tide Ripple, which is a copper-laced ripple with a wrought iron cladding.
Speaker: The holy grail I saw. It's pretty spiffy looking. Yeah. Yeah. Um, so, uh, go check it out with the app, get an early access, um, use the discount code triple T 10, or do it on the website, like an old fashioned old person. Um, either way. Uh, and, uh, while you're there, i go look at some gator piss. Uh, I just got my shipment of gator piss, which I just, uh, etched that, um, buoy in, which turned out really nice. I need to post that tomorrow actually.
Speaker: um And get some Grime Reaper to clean that those blades and some Gator Skin to protect it. Clean it, etch it, protect it. um And go check out all the other fun steels that they have in stock.
Speaker: um Yeah, remember, use the discount code TTT10. Don't leave that money on the table. Koi's got enough. Yeah. I saw Koi's, he did a little, a little IG post about going fishing. And I said, oh, I threatened him that I'm coming to visit and we're going fishing and we're going to make some steel. And he said, oh yeah.
Speaker: So I'm going to hold him to it. you're You're late to the game and now you're encroaching on my time. You are not invited. i mean, I'm just saying, no, you did not. This is in the work, sorry.
Speaker: But maybe you're planning a different time and I need to realign myself to be okay with that. A different time. Back to center. Yes. Here I go.
Speaker: Yeah, I saw that too. i love i love that. I really, really, really like when... people find something that isn't what their normal stuff is and they, they enjoy that.
Speaker: Um, yeah, I really do like that. and So, yeah, if I wasn't so busy, I would be, uh, taking off. Maybe, no, maybe that's not bad. Maybe I'll go hunting this week.
Speaker: Try and get some everyone except to you. Let me just rephrase that. Yeah. but Oh, for me, it annoys you, but everyone else, it's okay. I don't even think it annoys me. I just don't like to see you happy. I
Speaker: i don't even know if, I'm assuming it's October. Yeah. Turkey season must have started already. Gobble, gobble. Gobble, gobble.
Speaker: I'll have to look at the regs and see. Maybe I'll do that. Maybe I'll take a day off, go hunting this week. I think you should. Yeah. We'll see. I probably won't. I talk a good game, but I probably will sit my ass in the shop all week.
Speaker: Yeah. I got to clean that shop before the boys come after um after Austria.
Speaker: I will say that it's it won't take you that long. No. it clean as yeah really It's really, really dirty, but it's like just shit on the floor and boxes. and you're You're still anal enough to like, I was able to find your scissors and all the other shit that you have back in there. Good luck trying to find those in my fucking place.
Speaker: Yeah, it's never cluttered. Um, and I actually put all, all the leather stuff is going to get put away tomorrow. So that'll be, it's really, i can, I've got it down to a science. I can clean the shop in an hour. Um, and, uh, I will definitely be cleaning the shop before I start on that folder because it will drive me insane if I don't.
Speaker: Cool. But, um, Yeah. So we got a topic to discuss today we're going to try and start doing more topics, some knife topics to get some good conversation going.
Speaker: So this was actually discussed in my, um, Patreon, uh, community chat. And, I thought that'd be a good topic for us to discuss here. And that is what should be your, you know, you're starting out, you're at day one, you're Jared,
Speaker: five years ago and you have zero tools, what, what should you buy first? And there's, there's two, we're going to split this in two lanes, whether you're forging or your stock removal.
Speaker: because obviously those are going to be different uh they have different you know you need an anvil for one you don't for the other blah blah blah so let's let let's see uh let's start with the stock removal what what is like one of the very first tools you think you got to get and we're we're we're doing everything like you know minus you know, like fucking scissors and shit, but hand tools included. yeah I had to do all of that when I started.
Speaker: had zero. um Well, I mean, I think... yeah what should what What we should get, or? No, no. What do you think? What's what's the first thing? Like, what do what do you need to get first? Yeah, yeah well you need a grinder. What do you mean, grant when you say grinder? do you mean, grinder? You need a belt sander, and I think that you can...
Speaker: but boop way I'm going to get there. Okay. I'm going to get there. I think you don't need to go out and buy a 2x72 and spend a bazillion dollars. They make plenty of little 1x30s that have, know, they have a little disc sander on one side, little 4-inch disc sander and a um that you can you could do all kinds of shit with that um that's probably the most economical um you need a uh yeah see i was going to say the very first thing you need to buy is probably right angle grinder that's going to be your very first tool right that's what everybody buys first
Speaker: Because until you can start you can cut out a profile, you're- Yes, I think you're right. ah Yes, I guess, yeah Yeah, 100%. Okay, I can get on that.
Speaker: Yeah. I mean, you could. i'm not I'm not advising it, but you could make a knife with files. Yes, and i have a file jig. I did all that. Yeah.
Speaker: Yes, you could. So that's why I think the right angle grinder is probably the very first thing you got to get. And I've actually seen people do bevels with a. Yeah. what they yeah Yeah.
Speaker: Between a file and an angle grinder. Yep. Yep. um You need a drill. You need a drill. Drill. the I would say I'm going to go as far as say you need a drill press, not just a drill.
Speaker: yeah A hand drill is not going to cut it. You need, and you can buy drill presses. Like those little wind drill presses are actually rated really well for the price. They're like 80 bucks, a hundred bucks. um You can't go wrong for those things.
Speaker: Yep.
Speaker: You can't sell them on the marketplace, but. No, sold mine. Okay. Finally. After 54 people asking me if it was available.
Speaker: Yeah. and
Speaker: It's a drill press. You need. What other? Grinder. Okay, you you need some way to heat treat it. I was going to say you need a heat treat. And now I was just, I was literally just kind of going through all the shit that I went through. And so, yeah, some kind of a small budget forge or some kind.
Speaker: Yeah.
Speaker: Yeah. I made one out of fire bricks and a butane torch. You did? I didn't know you did that. Would you follow Redbeard's? I followed a lot of Redbeard stuff.
Speaker: So I made a file jig. i did like That's why I'm trying not to like just tell tell my story. But yeah, I did do that. And and honestly, those those kind of things are um really satisfying things.
Speaker: yeah when you get through it. um i think, you know, my, my story though, I, the amount of fear that I had at the moment, cause I was just complete novice. Like i had zero, no, I had nothing. But yeah, lighting the fucking torch,
Speaker: And then kind of like just angling it into this little hole and watching it go. Like I have a video on my phone still of me doing it. And I'm like, oh my God, it's good. That didn't work too well though.
Speaker: so i was retain a lot of heat yeah yeah so you should probably get some kind of a cheap board forge or some kind yeah but some of those things it's like it's it's like the rite of passage kind of thing like you you kind of learn a lot by going through like going through some of that pain i did the file jig i used to do my false edges with the the file jig yeah i remember that yeah i think you probably said everybody was stupid for for using it on the grinder because that's No, I just didn't.
Speaker: I couldn't. I don't know what. I didn't have a tilting rest at the time. So I couldn't figure out how to do it without messing it up.
Speaker: And I could do it pretty accurately with the file jig. Yeah, yeah. i was go That's what I did. Dennis always falls on a process that's repeatable and safe. So whether that's elbow greets or, you know.
Speaker: grinders now. I wish you guys knew the old Dennis. This this new guy is such a... Such an elitist now. The old guy was pretty cool. he's He's hand files on handles. i I guarantee you, I use hand files more than almost anybody. I pull out those. I think everyone should have a good set of files that you don't throw in a drawer, first of all.
Speaker: um They should be in little cases, you know, that they don't clash around um because you'll fuck up files real quick when you do that. um But yeah, i use files all the time. i think that's a very overlooked thing.
Speaker: people rushed to the grinder and messed things up quickly when they could have just spent two extra minutes and done it with a file. Yep. Yep.
Speaker: Yep. Yeah. So we we got some basic forage to heat treat. And then... You'll need some basic tongs.
Speaker: Yeah, I mean, but when I first started, I used to use vice grips, even when I was forging.
Speaker: wouldn't recommend that. Oh, I'm not recommending I'm just telling you what I did. I was going to say, like a couple more bucks, dude. You get yourself some talks. Hey, I was a cheap bastard back then. You was? um um Yeah, i I remember I would...
Speaker: I had a long, like almost like those long needle. You probably, you're probably the asshole that like fucking vice grip, vice grips to vice grips.
Speaker: It's like one of those survivor competitions. Good to see you. No, I had these like needle nose tongs that you buy at Walmart for like four bucks and then I would pull it out and then I would clamp it with these vice grips so that I could hit it with a hammer on the anvil.
Speaker: Yeah. Yeah. That's funny. Yeah. So, all right. So we're I think we did the the the stock removal. the I think the only thing, let's start with the the forging. I think the only thing different is that now you probably still need the angle grinder, but now you need some kind of anvil-shaped object. Yeah, and an anvil.
Speaker: Yeah, I remember spending my first, I didn't but i didn't do the I was thrown contemplating the railroad and then I just watched so many videos where people said, you're going to spend more money on cutoff discs and things like that. And i couldn't find a railroad tie that was cheap enough that I wanted to use. I ended up buying an NC anvil ship from North Carolina from NC. Um,
Speaker: For like 300 bucks. And I still have it. that's still I still have it at my leather station. It's a great anvil. Farrier's anvil. 70 pound. um Yeah. Then the Acasio anvils came out. They're 260, $280 ones, which are great starter anvils.
Speaker: And they're 130 pound anvils, so you got lots of room. So pick up one of those. Don't get a cast, don't get a cast iron anvil.
Speaker: Get some kind of hardened steel anvil, at least the face, whether the horn is, this doesn't matter um as much. And yeah, I mean, my first hammer was one of those Lowe's specials. I was just gonna say that that, you still have that thing in the in the rack.
Speaker: Do you? Not in the... It's in a tub, like a tool okay tub. It used to be there. i used to be like, what the fuck is this? and Yeah, because the problem... You rounded it off and... i rounded it off, but it was like a stubby handle. So it was very uncomfortable to use. It's like an Eastwig. Eastwig or whatever. Hammer? not just talking. Irwin.
Speaker: Irwin? I think it's like an... okay, you could be right. I don't know if it's yeah East Wig or Wind or we whatever. One of those blue hammers you get and rounded one side and flattened one side and, you know, chamfered all the edges and stuff.
Speaker: But it was okay. um The first forging i hammer I ever got was from Spencer at Heavy Forge or Sanison Steel. he i asked him if he would make me a hammer and um He made me a rounding hammer from, I think it was from a pin from a,
Speaker: um a yeah I don't know, a bulldozer or something like that. And I still have it. That's one I still have in the rack that that I use. Nice.
Speaker: Yeah. So that was ah that was my first rounding hammer. And then I've got one from John Norwood, who's also coming. It's funny, i have a hammer from both those guys.
Speaker: And um yeah, so anyway, i started amassing hammers and tongs. I bought the three combo set oftonngs off of off Amazon, which I still use to this day.
Speaker: bolt Bolt jaw, the V-bit bolt jaw tongs, which are the ones we use for Damascus all the time. It's like the number one set of tongs I pick up. And they always have that that that other...
Speaker: Was it the wolf? Wolf Jollot Tongs, which are useless. They're horrible. They're the worst set of tongs i have in the rack. Every time I pick them up, I'm like, these are useless. Yeah, it's it's guaranteed whatever's in it's going to swing around. just Terrible, terrible tongs. And what was the, there's three. What was the other ones in there?
Speaker: Fuck, don't remember. Are they straight tongs? I don't know. I never got that, that pack. Um, yeah, I don't remember the ths three tongs in the pack. I don't remember. You recommend trying to make your own? Um, I mean, I, I've said this many times. There's nothing I like less than making tongs.
Speaker: Um, I've tried it. I made my first set of tongs. They were awful. Um, I spent more time picking stuff up off the floor. That's funny. um And I mean, yeah, when you're starting out, you want to save money and you don't want to spend a lot of money on tools, especially when I started. I wasn't sure.
Speaker: i was really good at going through hobbies. So I wasn't really sure if this one was going to stick. Yeah, tell me about it. So I did not want to invest a ton of money. I built a forge. I built the tongs. I like the only thing i I bought was the anvil. Um, cause I was pretty sure I could resell it if I had to.
Speaker: Um, yeah, the first set of tongs that were just dog shit. I mean, they kind of worked, but you know, what I've been noticing lately too, is how I was absolutely fixated on a knife vice.
Speaker: Yeah. And that's a hundred percent not needed. Because I am seeing still to this day many, many examples of people hand sanding on pieces of wood and, you know, getting... a I think for sanding the blade...
Speaker: You're absolutely right. There's no difference between clamping it to two by four that's bolted to your table or whatever. Um, where, where I think the knife vice comes in really handy is when you're doing the blade. and yeah Yeah. Sorry. That the handle I meant the handle. Yes.
Speaker: Yes. Um, that's where it really shines. Yeah. because then you end up clamping your blade to the end of that two by four well and but the thing is then it's you can't turn it around spin it no no yeah not easily but it is doable yeah i guess you could have a a four by four and clamp it to the and then you can change each side but yeah um Yeah, but those are easy to make. I've, you know, for, I think I spent 30 bucks on my knife vice, a little welding and, uh, you know, two 12 inch sections of pipe. I like the one that you have now.
Speaker: need you to, need to make one of those. yeah Yeah. actually i really i do, but I have of a ridiculous amount of them. So yeah, you do. You have a bunch of them. Don't you have, uh,
Speaker: is it Oh, no, it's your your leg vice that's Miami Vice, right? yeah Yeah, the leg vice is Miami Vice. Yeah. But I have the OG one that kicks ass.
Speaker: um I bought one strictly for the handles. I made, like, the Trojan horse, the one that sits up on the bolts with the pins what the pins and the and the rubber tips. But didn't you have a problem with that one time, that you put little...
Speaker: uh in knife yes yes i had too thin of too small of bolts too too close together and when i was putting pressure down when i was sanding they kind of put these weird little marks in them yeah wasn't horrible i mean i got them out i just had to yeah yeah just something to think about um Yeah, I mean, other than that, I think then you transition to the same set of tools for um that we talked about for.
Speaker: um Stock removal. Stock removal, yeah. Yeah. um Yeah, I mean, okay, so then let's get to like the more advanced ones. Then I think it's debatable whether you go to a kiln.
Speaker: If you're considering the kiln, you should consider Evenheat kiln, one of our amazing sponsors, because ah they just make the most amazing kilns. Family owned and operated since 1948. They've been making kilns that long.
Speaker: That's older than me, way older than me, by the way. um Why are you looking at me like that? I didn't even, i would never say anything like you're older than even heat company.
Speaker: So get yourself an even heat kiln, but a kiln is definitely, I think that was one of the first big tools you purchased, right? That was the kiln. Yeah. Yeah. That was the one. And for me, that was a hundred percent.
Speaker: the right move Yeah. um I did not... What did I... I made my first which... which which got me going. It definitely was a big upgrade from the, what was it? A three by 48 or four by 48, whatever, whatever ridiculous grinder I had before then, which was like impossible to change the belts on and whatever. It was a terrible grinder. I think I had it for like two months and then i built a two by 72, but didn't put a VFD on it. So it was all speed all the time.
Speaker: I don't miss that. Yeah. Um, but, eventually upgraded to a real production grinder and, uh,
Speaker: There's no better grinder on the market right now than an Ameribraid. So if you guys need, you're about to make that jump, um, go consider an Ameribraid, fastback two by 72. Um, just an amazing grinder with amazing attachments. The, um, surface grinding attachment is gotta be the best on the market. It's the most praised, uh, attachment they have. Um, but other things that you'll get into rotary attachments, um, um,
Speaker: even a small wheel small wheel i imagine that yeah small wheel um a big like ah a big wheel um a small wheel um radius platens you name it that's another one i think you might need a dremel would be a good tool start some kind of rotary tool i am probably not essential but one you're gonna need pretty you're gonna need something some kind of rubber you need something to get in there to get something in those round the choil because that that oh yeah yeah if you don't have a if you don't have the small wheel absolutely you will need or at least the drum there the drums for your uh your drill press yeah on your drill press yeah which take forever yes
Speaker: And they're really good on your, on your, on a drill. yeah All that's, that's fantastic. Yeah. um And then if you're forging, of course, then you got to start considering press or power hammer, but yeah we're into the, we're into the big tools now. I, I don't think, I think I interrupted you with the, uh, uh, Ameribrade, uh, Oh yeah. Yeah.
Speaker: Yeah. Yeah, get yourself on ah an Ameribraid. Use the discount code TTT10 for 10% off accessories or just TTT for a discount on machines. Ameribraid.com. Go check them out. They will set you up. They got everything.
Speaker: At that show at ah Blade West in Long Beach, that was the the major dilemma that I had was the Ameribraid. um grinder or the even heat and thankfully they were doing dope deals in the basement for the ovens so that's why I ended up felt like I relapsed down there um but yeah I stuck it in the trunk and you stuck it in the trunk yeah hey now hey
Speaker: Yeah, a big... big ah You're just mad I got you for once.
Speaker: I'm thinking about the concept of sticking something you stick stuff in inside and something else. It's like little Russian dolls. and The babushkas. The babushkas.
Speaker: oh What i was going to say was that I was down there and I was talking with somebody from Ameribrain
Speaker: and Jeff and I were talking about building a grinder and i was just like, dude, I think I'm about to buy this grinder. and I remember having like a heart to heart with him on the side, you know, somewhere off to the side. And I'm like, do you think we could do this? And he's like, bitch, I could fucking make this. he was So insulted. and I sent him a video of this. He said he could make what? The grinder. oh he was like, I'm going to make this grinder in my sleep. Like, how dare you? You know, like, and, uh, and I remember so I sent him a video of the Maribraid tilting.
Speaker: And I was like, woohoo. Woo. And bro, he, he, To this day, if I ever go, woo, he's going to fucking get buttered and pissed at me because he was so fucking mad. Soon as we made our the tilting, our grinder tilt.
Speaker: it who It was so fucking cool. I just, yeah, that was great. But that was the dilemma. That was i was what it was supposed to be from the beginning. Ameribraid. So now I finally have one and so should you.
Speaker: Yeah. I got to clean mine up so I can actually see it again. Yeah. Yeah. yeah Well, that was a good discussion. I think we, I think we exhausted that one. um a I mean, there's other tools like rolling mills and, oh, I had a good discussion, by the way. I had a good discussion with ah David Barfield from, who made my rolling mill.
Speaker: um He called me up last week, or I, what, are his, Nephew, whatever, reached out to me. Whatever, he wanted to speak to me. Apparently, i need a disclaimer on this video. I did that video about the doing the twisting machine off the side.
Speaker: And ah he said he's he's had a lot of questions about that since I did the video. And i he said they tried it and every time they tried it, they burned out the gears in the rolling mill.
Speaker: And I said, oh, and he goes, and he he he said, you had no problems doing one inch? And I said, no, I mean, it was fine. It kicks off once in a while. And I said, oh, yeah, I didn't mention that I have mine plugged into um like a power bar.
Speaker: So if it surges, kicks the power bar off. Oh, so it never gets to break. It never gets to break. um So I should put that disclaimer in the video, in ah in a comment on the video that said, hey, if you're going to do this, first of all, I'm not responsible if you break your yeah rolling mill. And number two, plug it into a power bar. So at least if it surges, it, um because the thing doesn't actually draw much power.
Speaker: um So it's fine. normally plugged into a power bar um uh yeah you don't want to blow the uh the gears in it because it's only a worm drive so they don't have a lot of torque but uh but yeah it was cool i talked to him for like an hour he's uh yeah he's good dude but um yeah what else oh should we do some maker spotlights you got other shit to talk about Well, I was going to say that, you know, since I'm nearing the end of this build um and I don't have a laser anymore, so I'll have to come see you and we'll laser ourselves.
Speaker: we'll laser o ourselves we're gonna do tattoos and says you're gonna get the echo blade and i'm gonna get a fucking shark great all right deal um you first yeah but but i'm on the i'll be on to the next next build here and gonna be using ah some awesome um grip tech from uh grip tech composites that's uh on ig that's grip tech official uh makers of grippa grip grip x3d limitless um and all kinds of cool stuff um is it composites or composites
Speaker: yeah I don't remember, but one of them irritates me when you say it. So I think it's composites that you composites. Yeah. I don't even remember it now. See, I've converted you.
Speaker: You haven't converted me. I've confused you. You have. That is fucking fact right now. um I have to go back and listen to one.
Speaker: Anyways, the you guys got to go check out the newsletter. Matt does an awesome deal where you can sign up for the newsletter. Normally i'm going to eat my words right now, but normally you will get a discount code for a featured color of the week, which is applicable to that color and any other material that is in that color.
Speaker: So you can get the 3D versions. But this week we have a brand new color ah Tiffany blue um dropping. He's never done that before. So there will not be a discount code on that. um, through the newsletter.
Speaker: Um, however, um, as always, you'll be able to use the discount code triple T 10. Uh, and if you're going to do the newsletter featured color of the week, you can actually double dip and get, um, 10% off twice, um, for that. So very cool.
Speaker: Awesome deal right there. And then I have a major correction because last week I was talking all this shit about getting ahead of the, uh, pre-Black Friday sale that already happened. So fuck me.
Speaker: He's podcasting excellence over here. now I'm telling you, man. Limited quality all day long. that's the But ah yeah, if you guys know Matt, he's super kind, compassionate, caring the way he delivers all of these corrections to me. So he was very loving. i felt super supported and and corrected. Again, realigned.
Speaker: In a very kind way. But yeah, go check out this. It's a Tiffany blue. Tiffany blue. Yep. So you can make a a Tiffany blue knife for your wife or significant other and get a Tiffany box. Whatever you want. Yeah. Piss them off. I don't think you can say Tiffany box on this show. um But yeah.
Speaker: So that's cool. Nice. Triple T 10. Triple T 10. Triple T 10. TTT 1 0. That's right.
Speaker: All right. And then else are we going on to make your spotlight? um Our boy Lawrence. Oh yeah.
Speaker: Maker of everything. <unk> come on here Supplier of everything. If you need anything, especially if you are that person that we're talking about just a little while ago, getting started and you're, you know, scratching your head with where are you going to get all these tools? You can.
Speaker: you're going to need handle material. You're going to need steel. You're going to need a braces. You're going to need some things. And you know, it just so happens. We know the place for you to go. That's maritime knife supply. Uh, he has you covered awesome prices, fast shipping, um, and an amazing dude supporter of the community. And, um, if you actually are looking for something super unique, just hit them up. He'll, uh, help you track it down if he he doesn't have it already.
Speaker: Um, so yeah, go check out, uh, Lawrence Lake at Maritime Knife Supply for all of your knife making needs. Yeah. He's a dashing looking gentleman as well.
Speaker: He's my type. Oh God.
Speaker: Awkward. ah You've had this in the notes. The thing I just highlighted for like three episodes. What is this? Camping. Have you ever been in a can-am?
Speaker: can am okay i don't know what a cam am is yeah it's a car minus the end you mean like the bike the trike no the side-by-sides oh is it a side-by-side yeah um i've seen my number i'm you you mean like a like a just like a regular side-by-side can am thing yeah yeah i think i've been in one of those Recently?
Speaker: No. Because they are fucking awesome now. When I was in Reno, the the reason why I did it because I for meant to talk about it. When I was in Reno, um we hopped in the Can-Am and went to dinner in that thing.
Speaker: And because dinners yeah because Reno is fucking awesome. This is a four seater. Um, we popped the thing out full light bars. Like, i don't know if you've been in like Pismo or the sand dunes or anything, but they, these people, they tricked the shit out of these things. And they're like, I've never been on one that was street legal.
Speaker: It's just absolute. Like, acid fricking rave party lights going all over these things. Uh, anyways, we hop in this thing, music blaring, we head down the the neighborhood and just so happens there's fucking dirt trails all along the sides of the the roads over there in sparks.
Speaker: And, and we didn't even get after it. Cause I'm, I'm kind of a bitch when it comes to like going fast and doing things like that. Like it's never been my thing. Like really you drive like you're in one of those on the highway.
Speaker: No, I don't. you You drive like a maniac on the highway. No, no, no, no, no. I am a well-steer. Are you just saying that because your boss is listening? No.
Speaker: You drive like a crazy person on the highway. No. No. You drive like a... ah Insert a very offensive word. I don't even... Yeah. I'm not even going to entertain that. You're just... You're a control freak, Dennis. you can't not be doing what...
Speaker: But i love off-roading. I love going fast off-road. I don't. It scares me. I don't like like motorcycle. I don't like all that crap. So anyways, but we go down this thing, and I think we were barely probably doing 50 or something. And these...
Speaker: it was like gliding, no bumps. Like I was shit in my pants, like completely clenched up to the max and dude, it was so much fun.
Speaker: And he's like, Oh, and the, the, what they would make them now, they got, you know, but kind of like your buddy's boat that yeah has all the programming to make the way, like it'll go into sports mode and, yeah these things do ridiculous speeds and um yeah get the shocks and the suspension on those things is crazy it was so much fun it was a blast but i think that was probably my limit of what i was willing to do because they they were trying to go out later because you just go off into the fucking mountains over there and sparks and just disappear and you know do 100 miles an hour and i'm like yeah no thank you but anyways that that's what that note was about oh sounds like fun
Speaker: It was a lot of that. Yeah. It was cool.
Speaker: So, yeah. Nice. I think the wizard raffle still going on. If you haven't got in on that, I got a couple of tickets. If you haven't done that, I, if you're able to, I think that's an awesome cause. i think it's five bucks an injur entry or something like that. And I think it, I want to say that it's sometime this week, they're going to pull the thing, 30 prizes, bunch of cool stuff, support a good cause and help out our, our, our homies over there at the wizard forge.
Speaker: Yeah. Go check it out. yeah and you got a car for your son. I did. Well, he... I helped a little bit, but he's been working, and I think the biggest reason why I did help him was because I just love the fact that I was able to provide him a vehicle and him coming to this realization. I think it's pretty shitty too, that, you know, he gets a truck and gas is six 50 right now or something like that. Um, and you working part time and dumping 150 bucks to fill up your tank. At least it's not a diesel. It is. Yeah. But it would probably go a little farther for him.
Speaker: But ah yeah. So anyways, he got a little beater, a Honda and, but it's a stick shift. And he was very ambitious thinking that he could learn how to drive a stick shift in just a matter of seconds. And so, so I got to know, did you, cause you got a deal on this car is why you got it. Or were you looking for a stick shift? Yeah.
Speaker: It was a deal. Okay. It was a, it was a, yeah, too good to pass up. And I think, uh, yeah, if this thing lasts them a year, it'll be worth it 10 times over.
Speaker: uh, not, not a huge investment, but, um, yeah, it just happened to be a stick shift and, And he can't drive one. So anyways, that's what I was doing this afternoon. and I got home from work and he was sitting in the fucking driveway and he's like, can we go? And I'm like, all right, yeah, get in. And we go. And it's not that I, I don't think, ah I mean, i don't sound doom and gloom, but there's, uh, I always have a lot of anxiety when, when the kids started driving the girls, but my kids are seven years apart. So I've kind of gone through this in phases. um
Speaker: But, and then we've just recently, unfortunately had a a couple of high school kids that Jared went to school with pass away in a pretty shitty accident. So it's scary. It's scary. But, you know, with the stick shift, I, you know, there's the, ah the novice,
Speaker: driving there's just all kinds of shit you know the i'm just a fucking anxiety you know anxious wreck thinking about all the things that could happen and um but so anyways i took him out today and got him out in the in the country roads and was making him start and stop and shift gears and trying not to jerk me all the hell and fucking you know kill it stall it and he did really good but uh yeah he's kind of I humbled him a little bit today. So hi you we'll get him there. now
Speaker: He's just got to drive it. It's like there's no, he just needs. yeah It's like once you get there, once he gets the basics down, I just worry about him in in traffic and panicking with other cars. Because when we drove home to go pick it up, that's why on Friday um I came back and i and that was funny too. It's like the worst, some of the worst traffic I've been in going home I happen to be driving this fucking stick shift and boy, have I, have I transitioned? I think I drove a stick for like the first 15 years um that I drove.
Speaker: Like my first three, four cars were were stick shift. Yeah. Same here. I can't imagine doing that anymore. No, I got no patience for that. Zero. It's, it's so much fun for a minute. And then it's like, Oh God, this is late. It's fun while you're driving for fun, but when you're trying to get somewhere in traffic, it sucks.
Speaker: But yeah. and I guess, you know, and people are just really fucking shitty. So, um, That's all I worry about is him kind of getting getting panicky with, you know, with getting the car moving and doing things. and then Yeah, but I mean, usually the the outcome is he stalls it. I mean, that's usually the worst thing.
Speaker: It's not like, not usually something dangerous. Yeah. But that's that. It's like driving stick is like cursive. Kids just don't know how to do it. Yeah. Yeah.
Speaker: It's going to be everyone ah dying thing. It is. Yeah. The girls know how to do it. But they. Yeah, he just we didn't have one when he started. So.
Speaker: Well, the new cars, they don't even roll back. They don't like the new you buy a brand new stick right now. They don't roll back. They don't, they're way easier to drive. You don't even, yeah.
Speaker: I was telling him, like, i was trying to show him that she didn't, i was like, you don't, you shouldn't do this. But I was like, I can get this thing going without actually hitting the gas. So you just got to get comfortable with feathering the clutch and finding in the play. And, you know, you'll be fine. So he'll he'll be up and running here pretty quick.
Speaker: But yeah, it's pretty cool. It was cool. So. Got his own insurance. he's Got to pay for that. That makes me feel really good. oh he's paying for insurance? Mm-hmm. I don't.
Speaker: Yeah. I had you covered, dude. Not anymore. want to be a big boy. Here you go. Gas and insurance? Man.
Speaker: I'm still paying for Logan's insurance, but we'll see. He's still in school. Well, so is Jared, though. I mean, well, has he figured out what he's going to do yet? Yeah, he's he's ah about to get on with a okay you want an electrician.
Speaker: Oh. That's what he's that's what he's looking to do. he's He's got a buddy that's ah doing that right now and making pretty decent money. and Yeah, that's that's great. It's a good trade. Great trade. trade It's a great trade. it's just There's a lot of opportunity. It's not going anywhere given the... air and Given the climate of all of the high-tech stuff, you know, who knows what the fuck that's going to look like in five years, yeah.
Speaker: Yeah, and they'll pay them to train too, right? Mm-hmm. Good stuff, yeah. Not a lot of side hustling you can do with the electrical work. Yeah, it's... Yeah, can help your dad and... Fuck yeah. to Redo some wiring in the shop.
Speaker: Yeah, yeah. all right so let's get to these maker spotlights and get out of here oh yeah we're working fucking long here yeah see that topic thing went that worked well um i'm glad no one's ever done that before that's that's i'm sorry hey we don't have we don't have uh guests very often so we gotta get we gotta to come up with some more uh i'm not i'm for it yeah i'm for right who do you got I got my brother is in Japan right now.
Speaker: you got He's in Japan right now and he is golfing at the Fuji classic at the base of Mount Fuji.
Speaker: I was saying I was super jealous about not going on the trip last week, but this to today was, was, was next level. So he's having a blast. I thought that was really cool. I'm super happy for him. So anyways, I, as we were talking about, we got to do more knives. I was like, okay, yeah. All right. We,
Speaker: he gets to talk about golf and even though i support people fishing and hunting and doing all that all right um i have shit

Speaker: yeah Yeah, at the very, very bottom. It was um jes just awesome. Awesome culinary stuff. And I feel like I've been meaning to...
Speaker: spotlight him for a long time i should have said camp him um for a long time but uh i i haven't and it just came to me the other day so um i put him in there uh just really awesome stuff if you're not following him um but it looks like there's more than seven people follow him so he probably has cool stuff yeah a lot of culinary but he's got Looks like some kind of dagger, Viking dagger on his pin post. Yeah. It looks cool.
Speaker: Yeah. No cool. lot of Damascus forged finished stuff. it's just I dig. you say dagger? I dig this shit. So. It's like a Fairbairn Sykes dagger.
Speaker: Yeah. Cool. Very cool stuff. That's a good one. Rolls all day. Yeah. Really, really cool stuff. So, yeah. Go ah check him out. Give him a follow. Tell the boys at Triple T's. What's up? Nice.
Speaker: um I have. i'm a Brazilian. It's not. He's not a Brazilian, first of all. um First of all, Major Danebo.
Speaker: He is from Estonia. um and I'm definitely going to butcher in the name. ro raa Rauna paju R-A-U-N-O and last name P-A-J-U.
Speaker: So I'm not going attempt to mess that up. But um just some beautiful blades. the The top one caught my eye because it's a cool Damascus pattern. But the um the one he's got in here, the cleaver is really cool too, if you especially click on that picture.
Speaker: Definitely some kind of gradient in there. um This looks really, really cool. um yeah so oh yeah yeah yeah the one on the top the little guy yeah yeah yeah and uh the one it's got um lying on its back on the like the fifth um yeah black stripey one that one's pretty cool so just some really really cool knives yeah i'm mostly calling i don't know he's got some edc stuff too so but um yeah love the damascus work

Speaker: Yeah. I'm following him now. Nice. Very cool. All right. And then I have one more thing that I wanted to talk about and we'll get out of here.
Speaker: um The other day I was watching this reel um and don't know this fucking guy's name.
Speaker: Samuel. think that's his name. and But anyways, the, the account is sailing underscore with underscore Phoenix. And the reel was this guy.
Speaker: so sitting in his car and he was saying that he works a ah corporate job that he hates and ah all he is thinking about is buying a sailboat and sailing across, sailing around the world.
Speaker: And you in a car, and you could tell it was a long time ago. And then the the video switches over and he's on the sailboat and he's on the ocean and he goes, I never stopped thinking about it. Uh, kind of gets a little emotional, um, while he's, while he's saying it. Uh, and the dude is now like 10 days into sailing somewhere out of Washington and he's on a, the mission is to sail around the world. It should take him like some, like eight to nine months. He was saying, um, and uh,
Speaker: when I very rarely do i it's either like the, the, ah the soldiers, coming home and surprising the the family members.
Speaker: um And some kind of like, you know, kids talking about their parents or something like there's a handful of types of social media that'll like touch me.
Speaker: um And this one kind of made the the hair on my arms stand up. Like I got the goosebumps and i was like, the, the balls that it would take to make that kind of decision. And I don't know anything about the dude. Um, but I just was super inspired in thinking about like what, what it actually takes to just stop your life and go do something good.
Speaker: many would probably perceive as crazy and, and do something like that. Um, so, and then i clicked on his calendar. Dude's got like, I'm not the only one. He's got like 2 million fucking subscribers on Instagram.
Speaker: And, he's got a YouTube channel that you can, that's up there too as well. But, um anyways, I thought it was awesome post. Uh, it, it kind of affected me in a, in a good way. And I thought it was something that I should, uh, bring up and talk about. And cause I did notice, uh, quite a few fellow, uh, makers that are following, you know, you watch a reel and then on the bottom, it'll show you like some names. Quite a few of us in the community were following this journey too. So,
Speaker: I just had this image of Jared, you know, superimposed in the What About Bob video. I'm sailing. You ever seen the movie. bo bu I have, but that's, that's a reach. Holy shit.
Speaker: That'd be Jared. Yeah. would be Yeah. um but Anyways, i just thought it was super cool, dude. And I know you're absolutely emotionally affected by nothing. So I thought it would be the most that's true.
Speaker: I thought it would be the the best way to end the show ah with me talking about how you know ah you know inspiring and and uplifting and what an awesome thing. And then you're just looking at me and saying, okay, let's go. all right, let's get. I'll tell you what.
Speaker: yeah Yeah. Very uplifting. it was i'm I'm moved. i know you are. I can see. ah All right.
Speaker: We're out of here. After his story.
Speaker: Wait, where's the button? All right. You got anything else? All right.
Speaker: I honestly expected you. I honestly expected you to do some yacht rock joke. Like I'm super let down that I didn't get sailing. Take me away.
Speaker: that's where I want to be. missed it. See, you're going to be sorry. If we go to Riverside and they have endless, endless sound bites that you can add, i will have a complete library of sound bites to use.
Speaker: That's great. That's good. Cool. You'll love it. That's a wrap.
