Speaker: Hey, I'm back from Austria, from gallivanting across our Europe, and I'm here to with my good friend echo blades jared sandoval from echo blades to entertain you all and uh tell you about my travels and uh what we've been doing for last week uh i gotta start out with jet lag sucks and uh that's why we're we're back uh we're late a day because i can't handle the jet lag holy schnitzel
Speaker: Yeah. i am And I got a cold the day I left, um which was like one of those like 24 hour, 36 hour colds, but I'm kind of getting over it now. But that combined with the jet lag really sucked on the way home.
Speaker: oh Oh, yeah, that's horrible. Going there is not the the jet lag going there was not bad at all, but coming home always kicks my ass.
Speaker: I've never done it, and I think I actually messaged you when you were leaving, like, does it suck? Because I've i've got a trip going out that way, and ah ah still a ways out. But was starting thinking about, like, I was trying to plan something, like, the day I get there.
Speaker: And then we have an overnight, and then we go do something else. And i was like, I'm probably going to be, like, screwed up. And then you were like, no, it's great. No problems. And then you hit me up last night and I'm like, oh, so coming home, I got it.
Speaker: Yeah, it's because going there, you're like fast forwarding, like whatever it is, eight hours, something like that. Actually, it's probably more like 10. That's the number I'm looking at.
Speaker: Yeah. And if it's 10 hours forward, instead of it being at night, it's in the morning, you can usually power through. Like powering through during the day is usually not my problem. It's when like. You want to sleep during the day. You want to sleep. No, you want to go to sleep in a normal time and your body wakes you up at 3 a.m.
Speaker: And you cannot go back to sleep because your body thinks it is now 10 a.m. m or something ridiculous. And so the last three nights it's been, you know, your body wakes you up at, you know, 2 or 3 a.m. m and you can't go back to sleep.
Speaker: and That's like retired life stuff, dude. I wake up at two or three o'clock in the morning all the time just from my brain going or I can't shut it down. And man, I have watched ah lots of Netflix at two or three in the morning. And then you dig right back into sleep though at, you know, right when your alarm has to go off and you got to get up and going. But yeah, man, that sucks. Well, then you should be fine. Quit whining.
Speaker: i I wasn't whining. I was just asking. I'm just trying to get some suggestions. Yeah, there's there's nothing easy. Oh, all right.
Speaker: Well, that's cool. So, yeah, it was not my fault for all you voters. I can't believe that the listeners even fathomed that it was my fault.
Speaker: Why did you get complaints? I put a little poll on the Instagram post that we were delayed. And I was like, let's it's time for everybody's favorite game. Whose fault is it? Who fucked up the podcast?
Speaker: And then improve results are in. Dennis. Yeah, it was all me. I couldn't do it. ah I was trying to keep my eyes open at 730 last night and I couldn't do it.
Speaker: Like I literally could not do it. Yeah. That's why i didn't give you too much grief. Because I know i have some I have some dumb stuff I got to do. so I am awake now and ready to party.
Speaker: Nice. So, well, first off, want to give a shout out to Koya and Matt for filling in week. Yeah, I listened to the episode. Yeah. um Good time with those guys, as always. And I got through the normal...
Speaker: panic of of posting. It's so simple to put the podcast out. Every time I get done, I'm like...
Speaker: Oh, shit. What did I forget? Or did I this? And then I was thinking, I was like, fuck, we're on Zencaster. I bet you my fucking audio cut out and I'm going to have this and I'm going to be stuck with trying to like fix it. And I'm like, well, this is going to be bad. But no worries. No problems. It was all good.
Speaker: I had a good time. Good time chatting with them. um hope you guys did too as well. And here we are. So tell me about it. How did it go? did okay I have some questions. did So obviously the jet lag, that sucked, but seems like that wasn't on until the way home.
Speaker: So first first we had a little trial and tribulation getting there. Okay. So you would have missed the flight. if If this was Jared leaving to get our plane, Jared would have missed the flight.
Speaker: And this is why. We were going to, You know I like to get there early. And we were going to leave our car at a friend's house in Redwood City so we didn't have to pay the pay crazy fees.
Speaker: We got on. So we left our house at 8.30 in the morning for 1 o'clock flight. Okay, tons of time. We knew we had tons of time. We were going to have breakfast. We were going to take it easy.
Speaker: We spent two hours on the San Mateo Bridge. Just on the bridge.
Speaker: Yeah, I don't So we got to the airport at 11 o'clock and we left my house at 830. No, I would have left at 11. Exactly. The traffic would have been cleared and I would have got there at my normal time. Hands down. It absolutely was not clear.
Speaker: um Yeah, I don't know what something took a shit on the San Mateo Bridge and like it was red. before the toll plaza all the way across the bridge is 13 miles long yeah all the bit red all the way across yeah i probably would have been on fumes too yeah so we luckily we rolled in with just enough time and made it um the flight was an hour yeah we had like an hour and a half okay yeah which is i mean it's an international flight so that's pushing it um
Speaker: By the time we parked and everything. But anyway, we got there. It was great. Flight was great because we had the the business class seats kind of thing. So at least to London.
Speaker: And then we switched planes in London, got to Vienna, um spent the night and the day in Vienna, which was really cool. Had my um my first meal, my first Austrian meal there, which, of course, I had to get s schnitzel, which was delicious.
Speaker: um yeah vienna was gorgeous um we didn't spend much time there because we got on the train the very next morning but the one thing we notice and this is a trend i don't know if you've seen this before but my wife is hooked now so not in germany but every hotel we stayed at in austria we get in the room We look at the bed and the bed has two, they're all king beds.
Speaker: The bed has two down comforters, right? One on one side, one on the other. So you each get your own, like, I don't know, doubles. What's half a king? A double, a double sized comforter.
Speaker: You don't share one. You each get one. And Kim thought this was the best thing ever that she didn't have to share a blanket. And every one of the Austrian hotels were like that.
Speaker: Big fan. Yeah. Big fan. Hats off. Isn't that awesome? That is awesome. I, yeah I am a fucking firm believer that no no person should share a blanket with another person.
Speaker: She was talking about that the whole trip. She was looking at blankets when we were in Salzburg, like, you know, these like fancy feather duvets because she was so enamored with the the blankets in all of the the hotels in Austria.
Speaker: Yeah, that's great. I love that. Yeah. Big fan. Totally support. I think that was the highlight for her. um But we, so we just basically spent, we got there in morning, was like 7 a.m.
Speaker: By the time we got to the hotel, it was like, I don't know, 10 a.m. or 10.30, something like that. um Left our luggage there. Of course, they couldn't check us in. We Walked around um Vienna for a while, went to this market, and ah anyway, had dinner, didn't do much in Vienna.
Speaker: Next day, I got on a train, went to Steyr, which is where the the show was. um Vienna, of course, is a really big city, right? It's the capital.
Speaker: um Steyr is tiny. It's tiny little town, but... um where our hotel was is right in this old section of town, cobblestone streets. There's a river right beside it It's beautiful. It's such a, such a cool little town.
Speaker: And it's a, like a 15 minute walk where our hotel was to the show. And, uh, that was great. Um, so in fact, we, what we were able to walk from the train station to our hotel with our luggage, that's how close it was.
Speaker: Um, so very cool. Steyr is a cool little town. Um, the Friday night. So we got there Friday, the Friday night, there was a dinner. Um, I mean, it was most, wouldn't say most, it was a lot of the makers. I don't know. Maybe it was in Piedon. I don't know.
Speaker: Um, but, um, uh, it was this delicious restaurant. Um, they great food. Um, I ended up having a traditional Austrian dish. Uh, and I had, we actually sat with, uh, Tobias Hangler and, uh, and I don't remember the other guy's name, but, um, they were giving us tips on what to order, what to eat.
Speaker: And then, um, halfway through the dinner or after the dinner, whatever, um another guy sat down, we were talking to him for half an hour and I didn't know who it was. And then he asked me who I was and I introduced myself and he goes, I just said my first name and he goes, oh, are you Dennis Terrell? And I said, yes. And he said, oh, I'm Oliver Tobin.
Speaker: So the guy that makes the Tobin grinding jig. So that was cool to meet him and and hook up and yeah. And so that was really cool. They ended up giving us a ride home to the hotel. And yeah, so dinner was fun. Saw everyone there. Gabe was there. um Josh Prince was there.
Speaker: Will was there. Of course, Martin and and Trey and the whole gang was there. So yeah, it was cool. um The show. the the show is at a auditorium kind of thing was really cool. um the the One of the best parts is they have the food and desserts and everything right outside. In fact, you can get it ordered to your table. So you can actually order it online and they'll bring it to your table, which is cool if you're at your table by yourself, which I wasn't, but yeah.
Speaker: yeah But the show was, i got ah I got a chance to go around all the tables before the show actually opened. um So many cool makers.
Speaker: the The thing that that threw me the most was that I didn't think I was going to get um recognized by so many people at the show.
Speaker: Like so many people came up to me and said, oh yeah, I watch your video. I did not expect to be recognized by so many people in Austria. Um, and have some, it just threw me. It really did. Um, tons of people came up, wanted to, um, introduce themselves, take pictures. it was crazy. Um, I did not expect that, but that was really cool.
Speaker: But the, um, the show itself is at least. eighty percent culinary at least There was probably me and maybe three other tables that had non-culinary knives.
Speaker: That's what figured. Yeah. So that part was good and bad in that there was only probably three tables that had folders. And that's, people were looking at the buoys, but I knew there was going to be no buyers for the buoys.
Speaker: Just, you know, people were admiring them, but no one no collectors of that company. you know, that class came, I think, from culinary stuff. Yeah. Yeah.
Speaker: A lot of the, um, like eating tools guys, the guys from eating tools, uh, were there. um some of the other culinary, um, uh, guys that were there, like, um,
Speaker: you know, the website guys, the guys that, um, yeah, those guys. Yeah. Whatever. You know what i mean? Um, uh, so some of those guys were there to, to purchase knives, but, um, I don't think there was a lot of like, like the collector, you know, ABS style knives kind of thing, um, there, but, um, some, some awesome, awesome knives. I met a ton of people. It was a really, really fun show. Um,
Speaker: Yeah. I mean, to put it in perspective, there's so many people there are like, like just seem to be into culinary knives. I had one lady, you know, that knife that, um, that I showed you the copper one, the copper Bowie had the big recurve in it.
Speaker: So she didn't really speak much English. So she came up to the table and she was looking at it and she gave me a quizzical look and she picked up the knife and she goes like, I don't understand. And she held it like she was holding it on a cutting board trying to cut vegetables. Yeah. yeah Yeah. I was like, no no, no, no, not what it's for.
Speaker: Um, but, uh, Overall, I had a great show. Obviously, I sold the dagger, which was being sold there. sold a couple folders.
Speaker: um I had one guy come over. He probably came by the table at least more than six times and picked up the same two folders every time.
Speaker: I'm like, okay, this this guy's definitely, you know, he's going to buy one. And he comes by and this is like the, this is on the first day and near the end of the show.
Speaker: And he basically says, you know, well how much for this one? And I said, well, the price is right there. And he goes, come on, which, and I said, make me an offer. And, uh, I think it was, it was up there for a thousand euro. And I said, he said, he said 900.
Speaker: nine hundred And I thought about it. I said, sure. and he And he thought about it, he looked at it and he put it down, and he walked away. shit. I'm like, you made the offer. And, yeah, it was it was a really weird interaction. Yeah.
Speaker: the Wolfgang, who bought the dagger, um brought, and i he was going to, we were supposed to meet him in Salzburg after the show, but he ended up coming to the show, and he brought some of his collection.
Speaker: So he had two, like, big gun cases with, like, three swords in each one. These were... beautiful he's like he has like a very very high-end collection nice um so that was really cool to see some of those um got some pictures with him and he picked up the dagger he was very happy with it which i was happy about yeah he was stoked he put a post out and was thrilled to add it to the collection so yeah i was i was happy for you yeah yeah that was yeah that had like a thousand so views or whatever on that on that post too so that was good
Speaker: Um, who else met a couple, um, us army guys that were stationed in Germany came by who, uh, who also watched my videos, which was crazy. Um, and, um, Niels Olgren and Ben come on also both came by the table to say hi, which was cool.
Speaker: Man, that's a Some powerhouse names there, buddy. I know. I know. Nils and i were were chatting about, you know, YouTube and when we started and we kind of started at the same time, which was crazy. I thought he, we started YouTube at the same time.
Speaker: Um, but, uh, we were chit chatting about YouTube and how things are going and stuff like that. Uh, so overall I had a great time at the show.
Speaker: um everyone like, but like I don't know. I don't know percentage. 90, 90% of the population speaks English. So that was great.
Speaker: Like you'd you didn't have to worry about because German is a very hard language, Austrian, German. Um, so yeah, I know absolutely zero, um, German.
Speaker: So, uh, uh, that would have been crazy trying to yeah i get along in a, in a country that I don't speak the language at all, but everyone spoke English, which was great. And yeah, so we had a great time. We had a really nice hotel room.
Speaker: You probably saw the video of the bathroom. I did see you, yeah taking a poop. That was cool. Yeah, was going to kill wife that. She's the best. She's the best.
Speaker: I thought about it. like Every time she you know does those things, I always think about, how i want to roast you in the comments. and I'm just like, eh, I just let it be. But yeah, that was some good stuff. And then Koi, I owe Koi an apology and a shout out because he made an absolute banger of a joke.
Speaker: in our episode and it went right over my head which one it and i but i don't know what i was doing i i listened back like when i was posting it or i think that's what i was doing just checking spot checking audio and he said he goes i've never been so grateful for t-shirts and and ah And it just went right over my head. and I was like, oh, dude, I would have. I would have. Yeah, I my bad, Koi. You know, i ain't the sharpest shit in the tool, but you deserved a a way better response for that. it was like crickets. I don't even think Matt got it.
Speaker: But that was a banger, dude. I was like, oh,
Speaker: okay and ah I got it. Clay. So that's the important part. Yes, you did. Yeah. We do. We think we had the the audio clip of the century, though, on that one.
Speaker: Kim, turn the oven off. I did mean to go back and clip that out, but I forgot. Yeah, don't worry. matt Matt did it for us. It was pretty good.
Speaker: But yeah, the T-shirt one had me dying, and i I felt like a dumbass because I didn't even freaking acknowledge it during the show. There was another thing that came up in that show that I was going to rail you guys about. um What the hell was it? now Now I don't remember what it was. i should have put in the notes.
Speaker: ah Something Koi said later on. It'll come to me. Him not calling you back or something? Because that's what set this whole thing up. That was the only thing. out he goes He mentioned that you'd never call him back. What do you mean I'd never call him back? That's what he said. That's what started the whole thing. and I'm like, don't don't be mad because you probably just can't hear. you know because he's all probably yelling at Kim. Turn the oven off. That's your phone, Jack Wagon.
Speaker: and a It was good. almost named the the the episode. the turn the oven off. It was good.
Speaker: oh Nice. Yeah, that was cool. Yeah, so the show was really fun. um So overall, you did well. You you got a couple, you moved a couple pieces. You the big one off.
Speaker: Yeah, moved a couple pieces. um I did get some, since Jocelyn Fraser was there, I did get a couple pictures taken. Nice. um And it was cool being right beside Evan Davis from Enceladus Forge, so we got to... MacLadius.
Speaker: here Whatever. No, I always fuck That's not it. Yeah. ah So we got to, you know, shoot the shit the whole the whole couple days. that's cool. You travel all the way across the country to hang out with your neighbor. Yeah. I mean, across the world, sorry, not the country. Yeah. um But, yeah, that was cool.
Speaker: um But the next day after, we headed to Salzburg, um Austria. um which was just a little stopover before we headed to Munich. That was really fun.
Speaker: um a We toured a little castle there. had some excellent pizza. So, You forget how close Austria is to Italy. There is a ton, a ton of Italian restaurants there that all serve amazing food. In fact, I, we didn't have even a mediocre meal. Every meal was excellent that we had there. That's good to hear.
Speaker: Whether it was like traditional Austrian food or i had pizza twice, um, like really good Neapolitan pizza. Um, yeah.
Speaker: More schnitzel had schnitzel again in Austria. And again in Munich. So, yeah. But the pizza was fantastic. And then after Salzburg, we headed to Munich.
Speaker: And that was really just touring around. We toured Linderhof Palace and Neuschweinstein Castle, which is the castle that um inspired the Disney castle. Disney castle, yeah. Yeah.
Speaker: And so we toured that. Unfortunately, it rained that day, so we didn't get good like distance pictures of the castle, but we got to go inside and walk around and all that shit.
Speaker: You know, touristy shit. You went saw the Glock factory? Cool. The Glockenspiel. That is the... The, uh, the main center of Munich that has the little, yeah you know, in a cuckoo clock, sometimes it has the little guys that walk around. Yeah.
Speaker: Yeah. Well, the, the town hall has those at the top of the town hall, like, like full, full size, but huge. And like all this music goes off and these little guys walk around and everyone watches.
Speaker: Nice. Yeah. It's just a thing. And we did a big Ferris, you know, like the Ferris wheel that's in London. They have like one of those in Munich. okay Okay.
Speaker: It's like a big, fits like 12 people in one car. Cool. Yeah. We did that. Again, excellent food. And then to round out the the trip,
Speaker: um on the way back so in the morning we had to get we had an early flight we had like a 7 40 flight so we had to get up at like 4 30 uh and get an uber so get an uber to the airport and on the way you know i'm not really paying attention on the way the guy turns over and he says you know you you're okay if you know we we go fast and i'm like Yeah, go fast. He's like, because there's no speed limit here. and And he's like, so he's basically getting my permission. And and I said, fine.
Speaker: And then he started speeding up and Kim asked me, how fast is he going? and I'm like, you don't want to know. We were going, he topped out at 199 kilometers an which is like which is like 100 and no sorry ah yeah 199 kilometers an hour so like 125 miles per hour down the highway nice at 5 a.m in the morning in what kind of car a toyota camry oh geez uh but yeah it was the governor in there
Speaker: But we're like right on the left lane, right beside the, you know, like the connected barriers and they're flying past us. Like, yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah it was somewhat terrifying, but yeah, we're still alive and we made it to the airport.
Speaker: Nice. Yeah. So all in all, great trip. I would definitely recommend it. Austria was amazing. Germany was fun too. And Knife Show Austria was was great. Martin does such an excellent job.
Speaker: We saw posters for Knife Show Austria, like in Munich and in Salzburg, which is crazy. So he he does a good job advertising that thing.
Speaker: so Very cool. Yeah. It sounds awesome. I was just looking at the name. like Yeah. Seeing ah Tobias Angler, the Tobin, to come out like all the, that's that's really cool, dude.
Speaker: That is really cool. Martin. Yeah. That's that's awesome, dude. I'm glad you had a good time. Yeah. I think i'm a little um um'm a little upset you didn't mention the the best thing that you shared with me.
Speaker: Oh, which was? fucking bubble waffle banana blitz. Right. Yeah. When we were in Salzburg, we'd go by this little ice cream place.
Speaker: And Kim wants an ice cream, and they're like, fine. And it i don't even know how to describe it. I thought it was just going to be just like a waffle. But it was like... um instead of like little squares that you get in a waffle they were like round so was like a bubble but i thought that's all it was going to be was just going be a regular waffle but it was like almost like a crepe like soft like like eggy like a crepe uh and it was amazing we went back on ice cream whipped cream what kind of sauce is on there
Speaker: ah chocolate it's like a chocolate drizzle with banana it was sliced bananas oh god yeah that's my wheelhouse right there buddy it's like a freaking bubble waffle fosters type deal yeah we went back the next day and had it again i would have 100 good call yeah yeah that's fat jared approved right there yeah for sure Because there's a place that makes bubble waffles down the road here, and they're just like, meh.
Speaker: I said, damn it, I should have fucking put some bananas and all kinds of shit. Oh, that's good. Yeah, it was good. Nom, nom, nom, nom, nom. It was good. um What else i was going to say? um Oh, and the one the food is actually really cheap there.
Speaker: Because, you you know, you look at it and it's like, oh, like a pasta, whatever, schnitzels, like... $18 and you get like potatoes and like this schnitzel the size your head. And, uh, but then you're basically not tipping. Everything's included. All the taxes included.
Speaker: You get the bill and it's like, you know, $38 or whatever, $42 for the two of It's crazy. It would be like 75, 80 here. uh, everything seemed be
Speaker: so everything seemed to be cheaper I mean, we were paying Euro, right? Which is like 1.15 or something like that. But um yeah.
Speaker: Cool, man. Yeah. That's awesome. But what did you do while I was in Austria? um
Speaker: I have actually been in the shop a lot Nice. Yeah. Well, I don't know. Were you here when I sold two knives? No, but I heard about it. Yeah. I sold two knives and one day I had the ah the the knife that needed the the maker's mark on it and the the neighbor knife.
Speaker: um I bought got both of those off a couple of weeks back. And then i posted that knife for the neighbor and a lot of a lot of good feedback. yeah I think I was talking in the episode, the last one that you were there where I was, had all this like huge insecurity over having not made, you know, finished anything in a while and put something out. And I was really humbled with the amount of, uh, um,
Speaker: good feedback that I got with it and ended up getting quite a few couple orders, you know, based on that one. A lot of people tried to buy it. So i was like, yeah, sorry. It's, it's already gone.
Speaker: Um, so that was cool. And then, um, I think the the last time we were there, um we were talking about having, have some knives that I was, that have been done that I need to re-etch. So I went back and started re-sanding all of those, ran out of um some sandpaper, had to order some. So put those to the side, um started the ah the next knife for the ah the neighbor, which I have back there somewhere, but it's not with me right now.
Speaker: But ground that's a, this weekend I ground a knife out and it had been a while. Feel like anyways, I had to like work up to it like a couple days, like the week before it, like trying to get motivated to to do it. So I was choosing to do other things instead of like getting down. But um you know, it came out fine.
Speaker: I was happy. So, you know, just like riding a bike type of thing. But you just got to, I've always said, even mean if you're in the groove, you got to be in the right mindset to to sit down and grab bevels. and Absolutely.
Speaker: Yeah. So if you're you're not feeling it, it's probably not the time for you to do it. You're just going to get fucked up. I did learn I need to change belts more often though. A couple of times I'm just like, god what the and i'm like oh change the belt you dumbass and then i'm starting to get a lot better results so uh you know um that that was the the main part but um i got the edge down pretty thin ah off of the grinder um and uh know looking back at it doing caliper things i wasn't happy so i went back a couple times but um
Speaker: Yeah, i was i'm I'm stoked. so I got that thing hand-sanded. Got the first one side 220 and was doing the other. Just wanted to see what it looked like you know with that first thing. So I'm i'm happy with it. So I'm going to push forward.
Speaker: um And then I have that other knife for my buddies. going to be good. i'm I'm cruising right along. Got the got the groove going again. Yeah.
Speaker: you know, a couple of nights getting out there doing some stuff. And then after golf on the weekend, I've been in there in the shop, uh, pretty regular. So, yeah that's good yeah um, yeah. And I'm having fun. I'm having a good time.
Speaker: Uh, I did find out though. Uh, I don't know if you remember, but the, uh, The neighbor knife, I had to drill out the pinholes.
Speaker: Right. um So I go grab the other one that I profiled out. Apparently, I drilled all the pinholes with a seven sixty fourth bit. So I have three knives or four knives that had it. So I went to go, ah you know, i really I got to get the the handles started before get too far into hand sanding. And I went to go and I'm like, what the fuck? So and I checked it and I'm like, this one too? And so I went and checked the other knife. I'm like, this one too? And I went and checked another knife that I profiled and heat treated in that batch.
Speaker: All of them. And then I'm like, how the fuck do I come up with a 764 bit? And I i don't know. I don't know where or what. I must have been doing something that had it. And sometimes I leave drill bits in my little tray.
Speaker: um I bought a shit ton of number 30s eighth inch. and So i must have just picked it up and assumed it was right and just got busy and went to town. and So had to drill all those out today.
Speaker: um Do you have a 316th carbide? Is that what you're using? Those are hard, right? Yeah, I have an eighth inch carbide. Oh, they're eighth inch. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Speaker: So... um but yeah so that easy money but yeah it was just a kind of like what the fuck and then i was got i got super obsessed with trying to find out what it was and then i was getting the calipers it um was like um 1095 or some weird fucking number and i was just like what the fuck is this bit you know so anyways i found it out and that's that so uh Yeah, that's cool. um I got to fly out to Washington tomorrow just for a quick out and out and back. I'll be back tomorrow night.
Speaker: And then um this weekend I have I'm in a golf league and the the championship is this weekend. um So I got to do that Saturday. And then Lynn and I are going to go out to... We were supposed to go to a to the House of Prime Rib. We got invited...
Speaker: from a buddy of mine which have you ever been in the house of prime rib no oh so it's a it's really cool it's more of an experience like prime rib is kind of i'm on like man it's not my thing prime rib is not really my thing i'd much rather have the the ribeye yeah uh it's it's the same cut but you know it's just cooked different so um It's not my thing, but the the experience there in the city, it's ah it's a nicer restaurant. It's like booked out for like eight months, six, six six eight months. Yeah, to get like a prime a weekend spot.
Speaker: it's It's ridiculous. You can walk in and probably sit at the bar and get in, or you can get a late you know night, but if you want to get like a five or a six, you've got to get way out there.
Speaker: um So anyways, he invited us on Halloween night, and... um I was like, yeah, yeah, let me check with Lynn. And I did my standard shit and didn't get back to him. So I called him back like the whenever I did call him back.
Speaker: So my we're in. He's like, oh, dude, I just you didn't get back to me. So we're getting to go. It's kind of like you. He needs to have things like 10 weeks planned in advance.
Speaker: So he's like, oh, and you know, invited somebody else. They just confirmed earlier today. And I'm like, oh, that's fucking gay. Whatever. But that's the first time I've ever said that.
Speaker: That's the first time I've ever said that. 141 episodes. And this is the first time I've ever said that's gay. ah Anyways, um I was like, that's a bummer. And he ah he's like, well, you know what?
Speaker: I actually have a re reservation for the next weekend if you're interested in going. And I'm like, cool. Yeah, so I did it. And so it turns out, though, I have...
Speaker: That Saturday, i completely forgot about the the golf tournament. And then and then i have a dinner reservation. We have our buddies in town. I took off Friday.
Speaker: to hang out and plan to be in there Saturday. So I'm going to be a ghost on Saturday. is basically what this says. Cause I got to golf all day and then I got jet back and then go to the city for dinner. So, um, just turned out to be one of the, the days that I actually have something really going on that I have all of this shit going on now.
Speaker: So have to, had to pick and choose, but, um, Anyways, so we're going to have dinner. That'll be cool. um I'm glad it's at five o'clock, though. So we'll we'll go in the city and get right the fuck out because I have no desire to be there other than that. But it's a pretty cool cool restaurant, cool vibe.
Speaker: um And when I was, you know Fat Jared would have loved it because you you pick your cut, you can get like, i can't remember what they call him like the queen, the king cuts.
Speaker: size cuts And then if you finish it, they offer you ah another cut at the end, but you have to finish your first piece. And that's kind of like, you know, and when 330 pounds Jared. Yeah. I was, I was coming home with a full King cut the way out,
Speaker: but, um, yeah, so we're doing that. Um, and then, uh, yeah, so it's been cool. Yeah. I mean, works work and, uh,
Speaker: But so you're going, you're going, you're going to Washington tomorrow. Yeah. I'm going to Washington tomorrow. And you're back when? Tomorrow night. Oh, wow. Just, you're just going the day. I'm just going for the day.
Speaker: Oh, wow. Yeah. Crazy. But yeah. But overall, like the, the moral of the story is, is that I use the shit out of my Ameribrade two by 72 fastback. And I am thoroughly in love with this machine so much that I gotta, I've,
Speaker: you know the The one thing with that machine is is the two-inch tooling arms. and and i'm a fan.
Speaker: I used to kind of like... That would probably be the one thing that I would bitch about. Like, man, why does it got to be different? But it is...
Speaker: ah it is a no brainer. It is awesome. Um, so anyways, I got to go take advantage of the, the triple T 10, um, discount code that you can get for some accessories and I got to get, uh, uh, fully wrapped up in them in that deal. Cause I got a, um, basic, basic setup right now. Um, but if you are in the market for the best grinder,
Speaker: in the market allow myself to introduce myself do that all the time um go see uh kevin and eric and you can use the discount code triple t10 for 10 off of their awesome accessories um and you can get uh triple t will get you a discount off the machines um and yeah be part of the cool kids and go get yourself the most badass grinder uh around I use mine every day.
Speaker: All the times. Every day. Yep. And then pretty cool having Matt and Koi. That was cool. That was easy ad reads. We just pondered over the ad. Yeah, make them their ads themselves. That's right, yeah. pay me for you to do but uh yeah so this week over at uh grip tech composites they have a really cool drop uh that was released today actually um which you will be hearing tomorrow or later tonight um but anyways the um the butter scales are out um so this is a collab i think trey And couple people kind of were joking around and doing something, but they put together and made it come to life. And you're going to make a butter knife or some kind of kitchen spatula, something or other. They got really cool stick of butter, Grip Tech.
Speaker: deal coming out that was just released today. um you could use the discount code triple T 10 for a 10% off that. Um, I don't believe there's a, um, a discount from the newsletter, but for next week, um, on the, on the drops coming up, make sure you sign up for the newsletter, get the discount code for the feature color of the week. And you can double that discount with, uh, using the triple T 10, um, butters and scales and, um,
Speaker: Blocks of sheets too as well. So go do it. Yeah. just Just a note on Trey. He had a whole bunch of those um butter knives that had like the butter handles. Yeah. um Which I was, I was like, is that going to, is that going to, um,
Speaker: work well in austria like are they gonna get it like do they have that butter you know what i was thinking like is that gonna work there but apparently it did because i think he sold them all he had little cake testers that had like really cool g10 handles um he had a bunch of like spatulas that were like damasteel spatulas yeah yeah he i think he sold out of all of that stuff awesome I don't know about knives, but he said he killed it on all of like the spatula cake tester, all those things. So that was really cool to see. Yeah.
Speaker: Yeah. But yeah, go ah go check out Grip Tech Composites, Grip Tech um Official on IG. And, um excuse me, take advantage of the grip of the code. You can get all the standard GripX, GripX 3D, the Limitless variety, and the, what is the the fancy name?
Speaker: It's not in here anymore. ColorLab drops that he comes up with. So cool stuff there. What does Baker have? This week, Baker is doing another pre-order. he's he's doing He's on that pre-order bandwagon, which I think is awesome for folks to be able to get exactly what they want. And this week is the Kryptonite Stainless Steel Damascus that you can pre-order. I think this is going to be a hot one. This one is going to sell out, I think. So it closes Saturday, November 7th or Friday.
Speaker: until they fill up. So yeah I think it's going to go pretty quick. Everyone loves that stainless Damascus, so you better get your order in there. um While you're there, fill up your cart with some gator piss of all the varieties, some grime reaper, some gator skin, you name it.
Speaker: um Check it out. Use the discount code TTT10. Might as well get some discounts on that stuff. Mm-hmm. So very yeah go get it at Baker Forge and yeah, use the discount code so they they know you heard it here. That's right.
Speaker: You heard it here, folks. But wait, there's more. You get a discount. And since we're on sponsors, I gladly use my Even Heat Kiln today. Uh, I actually, these three days I'm doing a lot of prepping, um, prepping for when the boys are here this week. Um, which is, Spencer and John from Spencer from Sanderson steel and John from old Hickory forge are going to be here, ah Thursday. Uh, so i was doing a bunch of stuff to prep for that. And, I'm going to be at, um, um,
Speaker: Brian Hunt's shop next weekend, not this, not next, the week after this coming weekend. um So I was prepping some folder blades and preheating, preheat treating those before the trip in my even heat. So awesome to be able to do that. If you guys are looking for a really cool kiln, get yourself an even heat.
Speaker: They've been around for a long time, longer than me. go check them out and you know tell them you heard it here as well. Cool.
Speaker: Yeah. um Yeah, I'm looking forward to the boys coming. I was i did another um another round of foraging on that Damascus that we're going to be working on Friday.
Speaker: It's good you're coming Friday, actually, because that's Damascus day. So we'll be um just doing that mosaic um pine cone pattern. I got half of it half of it done just so we didn't have to do the the humdrum boring stuff together. Uh, we'll be doing the, uh, you know, the fancier stuff, the four ways, the tiling, um, that kind of stuff on Friday.
Speaker: Cool. So you'll be around for that. yeah But, um, Thursday too. But what's that? Oh yeah. I was going to ask if you were coming at least for dinner on Thursday. Yeah. Yeah. yeah Cool.
Speaker: Yep. Um, what else? Oh, I got some, uh, some cool feedback. Uh, uh, from a couple of people on a couple, couple of weeks ago, i was kind of going through it and I'll just, you know, Sal's bitching and whining, um, just kind of minimalize it because it's, you know, never comfortable to tell people that you're not feeling well and doing all that stuff. But I was very happy to hear that a couple of people, reached out and said, thank you. They appreciate, uh, the honesty and, uh, they related and, uh, for whatever reason, it kind of works out like that sometimes that the, uh, It came, you know, at a similar time where they were feeling the same way and, you know, they they found some some mam
Speaker: comfort or, you know, I always say, you know, yeah we're not alone. um And don't be afraid to talk and just share about it, man. Suffering in silence is fucking sad.
Speaker: So, um but anyways. Thought that was really cool. Every now and again, I'll i'll share some stuff and then i'll I'll have a huge amount of regret or insecurity for me. Maybe I shouldn't have said that or you know maybe I'm just, you know.
Speaker: um But it's always good to to to get confirmation. And so I appreciate you guys taking the time to to reach back out and um thank you for trusting me with that. So.
Speaker: um And those listeners names were, I'm kidding. All anonymous. And then last, ah a couple weeks back, we did a maker's spotlight shout out. And it was Michael Black of Black Custom Forage or something or other like that. I just, I totally am spacing on the name.
Speaker: But ah he messaged me because we were, oh we're going to follow him. And then he messaged me back and he's like, hey, guys, thanks for the shout Appreciate it I'm down a follower now. thought that was fucking hilarious.
Speaker: yeah I mean, you you have the wonderful opportunity, if you are so lucky, to get shouted out on this show that you could possibly grow your following by a whopping seven. If all seven of them get out there and actually hit the button, you will...
Speaker: exponentially grow your followership and he actually lost one so uh that was great um he didn't actually this one but it was it was pretty good so anyways that was cool i i i loved that do you listen to audiobooks um i've listened to a few but not it's not my what's that do you read I mean, I know how to read. I'm not asking any of you know how to. Are you a reader? I am not a reader. No, I'm not. I'm not one to like buy a book and read it.
Speaker: Oh, Bill Hicks, a comedian, has a great, a great bit about that. He's he said he's he's doing a show in Fife, Alabama, and he's reading a book at the ah at like the local Waffle House. And the waitress comes up to me and he goes, what you reading for?
Speaker: Not what am I reading? But what am I reading for? Look, fella, we got a reader over here. We got ourselves a reader. i thought it was great. Every time I ask that, do you read? They're like, I know how to read. I get that.
Speaker: That's cool. ah So sort of I listen to a lot of audiobooks. And I say I listen to a lot of them over the span of the past 10, 15 years. I've listened to a lot. I go and complete...
Speaker: just cycles like sometimes i just i'm on book after book after book after book um and then podcasts will come back in and then audiobooks but um um somebody reached out and i was reading this book called uh dungeon crawler carl i've heard of this and i've never i don't understand what it is it it's a series of like i think there's nine nine of them so i'm into series things like i like ones that have more than just one book like you can get into them uh
Speaker: it's a uh it's a gaming a role play our our yeah role playing gaming themed book and uh it's just it's it's it's fucking hilarious it's a good story um and i was surprised um the name is escaping me um reached out and was was talking about it and He was going to recommend it. And I was like, oh, dude, i ah I'm already on like the fifth book right now, fourth or fifth book. And he he was name dropping a couple of people in the community that were reading it, too. And I was like, huh, because it's been probably about like six, eight months that I've been doing it. But I'm like, I don't know if that's good conversation for here. Insecure.
Speaker: But, dude, it's great. And I'm curious how many other DCC homies are out there. So. I've heard, i didn't know it was a book, but I've heard it referenced a few times lately.
Speaker: Yeah, it's it's it's fucking, it's fantastic, dude. It's absolutely great. wonder if they're going make it into like a TV series or something. They 100% are. Seth MacFarlane already bought the rights and it is coming here soon. Cool.
Speaker: It's going to be animated? probably, i mean, if Seth doesn't, yeah. Then I probably won't watch it. Yeah, it's it's it's really cool. anyways, I was just curious if you're an audiobook guy or not.
Speaker: I've listened to three audiobooks. so and All of them are on poker? No, actually none of them. I've listened to Artie Lang's Too Fat to Fish.
Speaker: That's fucking surprising. Which is a hilarious book. Oh, man, Artie's the man. I saw Artie. Have you seen him lately? i have not seen him lately, but I saw him. Oh, it's bad.
Speaker: Yeah, yeah. mean, it's been bad for a long time. Oh, it's really bad now. Yeah. You wouldn't even recognize him. Yeah, I heard. i mean. Yeah, really bad. ah And this one will surprise the hell out of you. I've listened to both of Barack Obama's books.
Speaker: um just because when when he first was running for president, um I wanted to know what he was about, so I listened to both his books.
Speaker: Nice. Speaking of that, did you did you vote today? Of course. Well, not lie. You did not. What you have a mail-in ballot, homie. I've been in.
Speaker: oh Yeah, i exercised my civic duty for the first time as a US citizen and voted today. Congratulations, sir.
Speaker: Yeah. Congratulations. i did see your post. Yeah, I'm not going get all political, but I think it's ridiculous that you don't have to show ID. That is, it annoyed me.
Speaker: Sure. That there was absolutely no verification of who I was. Yeah. I was annoyed. Yeah, I have a great thing. You know, it's just, you know, politics in in the in the public and I, dadda said I don't do it.
Speaker: And have no desire to do it. So I've always wanted to make a post Because there's always people you can bait every single person. Because here's my take is just that there's a lot of people that I really like and in love and and and enjoy their conversation and company and in and friendships. And...
Speaker: there is a very hard, very strong probability that there's a differing of opinion on, you know, the, the two major subjects. Right. And, and I don't want to fucking not like you anymore. So just, yeah, let's not talk about it. But I, Oh, every time, um I think Brian Hunt actually sent me a reel today that, uh, and I thought it was, it was great. It was like, um,
Speaker: Oh, man, it's time to vote today. blah, bla blah, blah, blah. There's guy over there stressing over like what he's going to do. And then there's a dude on the other side of the bus. And he's all fucking happy. And he's like, fucking yes. Tomorrow, no more annoying ass fucking political you know social media. I'm with you on that. Yeah, I thought that was great. But I always want to do a post where I just go, you know, well, normally don't talk about politics.
Speaker: because that's how they all start, you know, and, and they just go, and I'm not, and I'm not going to do it now. So yeah but I've never done it. Cause I, I, I have zero desire, but once in a while I'll get a,
Speaker: bug up my ass that I need to vent but normally usually regret it after I post it but yeah it took about three comments uh that's for me to go yeah I shouldn't have posted that yeah no because there's so somebody that knows so much more and you know is yeah it's just it's it's it's great but that's what it's you know some people are passionate about that and that's great yeah so each to each his own But yeah, that's that's good.
Speaker: Then we'll finally see some movement in our economy here. Either way, whether good or bad. Yeah, would like to see some movement in the economy because I've paid for too much crap lately. Speaking of paying for something, um I got the coolest thing in the mail ah no yesterday.
Speaker: um You finally got the attachment for the sand shark? ah No. No. I've had that. Oh, okay. um No, I've been looking at this and I'm looking for places to buy this for a while.
Speaker: could not find any any place and then I saw someone post a knife with this on it and actually linked where they got it and I got it from American and american Metal Exchange.
Speaker: I bought some crystallized titanium. And if you've never seen crystallized titanium, it is very cool. I will show you on Thursday or Friday.
Speaker: um It was not cheap. A sheet of crystallized titanium that's like $160,000 12 12, like cool. And folders, made. might but i it is extremely cool and you guys will see some knives um folders um made maybe i might even Who knows? I might even use it for something else. Um, but you will see some crystallized titanium.
Speaker: Are you going to get tamascus? What's that? Is that tamascus? No, no, it is not tamascus. Okay, let me tell you, crystallized titanium is a process that they do on titanium that basically basically turns not just the surface, it's right through the titanium. It basically turns it into like these crystalline structures. It looks like like the inside of a snowflake.
Speaker: Okay, all over the titanium. And if you anodize it, even if you grind it, you know, all of that crystallization is still there. It's, it almost looks like a surface finish, but it goes straight straight through the titanium.
Speaker: yeah And okay if you anodize it, it just looks amazing. Yeah. Yeah. It does look cool. Yeah. So I bought some of that and I'm very excited to use that. Nice.
Speaker: Very cool. Yeah. I don't know where you went though. Yeah. Yeah. So that'll be ah coming up. also got to do that. um Now that I've got that cobalt all flattened, I got to get that cobalt Damascus um attempted.
Speaker: So maybe I got I'm so busy this month with classes that it probably won't be till December when I get that tried. But yeah, you probably should have hit up our boy Lawrence Lake. He would have been able to track down some crystallized tamascus for you i probably could have yeah because you know why if you need anything for knife making you better go check out lawrence lake and maritime knife supply he's got you covered from the most rarest items on the earth all the way down to the standard everyday uh belts tools uh you name it he's got it abrasives machines materials um go check out, uh, the website and, uh, go put your order in and tell them that, uh, Dennis sent you. Cause you might get a, um, like a selfie of Lawrence and you'll think it's Dennis cause they're related in some weird way. But, uh, anyways,
Speaker: Yeah. um Maritime knife supply for all your knife making needs. Go check it out. He's got you covered. That's right. And if you guys need a hammer for any kind of forging or you just want a cool hammer, go check out Frank Nita over at Two Bastards Texas Smithian Supplies, home of the fat peen. Get yourself a peen. Be a fiend for the peen. Yeah.
Speaker: ah Yeah. It can be a straight, a cross, the diagonal, a crisscross. Double banger. Double banger. Double banger, diagonal, danger.
Speaker: He's got you. Team P-Fiend, let's go. oh Why, Dennis? Tell me why. Because ain't it grand to have a giant fat peen in one's hand. That's right.
Speaker: That's right. Even a small one. Yeah. It doesn't matter. Don't be size shaming, dude. Come on. Shall we do some maker spotlights? Sure. All right. I'll go first since I got mine pulled up here. actually you had mine ready to go, too. Oh, wow. You never have yours ready to go. I don't. No, this is a first. ah So now going to fuck me up because now I got to go find yours. Yeah, that's right. um i am Mine is...
Speaker: I'm sure I'm not saying this right, but Jacinto underscore knives, um which is, of course, another Brazilian. i'm surprise. Jacinto del Melo Mayo.
Speaker: I don't know how to say that in Portuguese, um but just some really, really cool stuff. Love, absolutely love the checkering on the handles on on that first one.
Speaker: Just amazing double checkering on that one. Oh, yeah. It has a small handle, but I didn't see it. If you've ever done checkering, which I have, you will understand how how difficult that is to do. um and not mess it up. So really, really nice. That's the one that sparked my attention. The fourth one in his profile, the fourth picture.
Speaker: um Just amazing. he does He does a lot of checkering on his handles, which is very I tripping or does that spine look like two different colors?
Speaker: Does the spine look like it has two different colors steel on it? Am I tripping? ah it has I think it has jimping on it. I think that's why you're seeing it. No. Which are you looking at?
Speaker: The first one.
Speaker: The first one is in a sheath. Yep. And then you click on the post and there's a couple of views of it. Oh. ah No, I think it's the angle.
Speaker: Yeah, I think it's just the angle. That looks like distinct line. OK, now I see what you're saying. um yeah that's curious i don't know what that is and yeah yeah i don't know if there's if there's a slight peek there maybe that's what it is because i can't believe that would be two steals
Speaker: i'm looking at the video now hoping he goes over yeah you're only seeing only showing one side for sure it looks
Speaker: Yeah, oh that handle is just... There's a lot going on on that handle. A lot going on. Yeah. This is, i mean, I know this is an audio experience for you guys, but just close your eyes, exercise theater of the mind, and have your jaw drop open because that's what's happening right now as we're watching this video.
Speaker: Yeah, that's pretty impressive. Yeah, very cool. Yeah, very cool. I see what you're talking about, but I think there's like a really... There's a peak there, like a bevel on the spine, and I think we're seeing the two facets of it is what guessing. I can't believe there'd be two steels one on side one on the other. That's really clean fucking work.
Speaker: Yeah. It's not like wowing fancy stuff, but man, there's not a misplaced facet in any...
Speaker: no Man, yeah. i am yeah I like the simplicity. Yeah, it's nice. Mixed with the complexity. That's pretty good um good. Cool. cool So who do you have?
Speaker: I have, um which we were surprised that neither of us have featured him, but I have Pirate Forge.
Speaker: Wayne?
Speaker: Melgar? I know I've seen this. Wayne Melgan? Yeah, this profile before, but I wasn't following, but now I am.
Speaker: Yeah, so he's got 63.9 thousand followers. um Yeah, that's that's a shame if you weren't following him because he has very cool content.
Speaker: Big chopper things. He's always cutting pigs and ah you know doing really cool stuff. But he just makes some fucking badass, crazy, big chopping things. And I dig it.
Speaker: Yeah, swords. He's done a lot of stuff. Very cool stuff. I was down to some EDC-looking stuff, daggers. But yeah, he's always cutting and chopping shit in in half,
Speaker: which don't see right now as I'm scrolling through. But anyways, yeah. So anyways, he's always in my feed. And yeah, I thought I'd just give him a shout out for being cool.
Speaker: making big, sharp, pointy, slicey things. So, yeah, go check them out. um Yeah. I don't think our seven, think our seven are already vested in this.
Speaker: This might be the one of the most. This me, Mrs. Echo Blades, Maritime Knife Supply, and 265 other makers follow him as well, so.
Speaker: That far exceeds our reach. Yeah. Anyways. Yep. There you go. Shout out to Pirate's Forge. Cool stuff.
Speaker: All right, man. Anything else? Are we calling this a night? ready for it to be a night. Yeah. i'm I'm already tired. That jet lag's kicking in again. Cool.
Speaker: All right, man. It has been a a week. I'm looking forward to... to having the boys here in a couple of days. That's going to be fun. Yeah, really looking forward to that. Yep, really looking forward to that.
Speaker: Yeah, that's going to be a blast. And you guys will hear all about it in next week's show. Yeah. All right. Bye-bye. We're out of here.
Speaker: See you later.
Speaker: yeah mouth yeah The amount giggle bugs that were going on when that drop happened last week made my evening.
Speaker: What? The fucking hee hee hee hee. it again. Bop plop.
Speaker: That's a wrap.
