Speaker: What's up everybody welcome to another triple t podcast for knife makers my name is Jared from echo blades and as always I have my good friend Mr Dennis Terrell from Terrell knife works and we are in the process of absolutely perfecting intros so what you were hearing right now. Right now is absolute perfection. There is no better representation of an intro right now. Make sure you like, subscribe, and follow the Instagram and Dennis' YouTube channel. And always, whatever medium that you're listening to this, give us feedback because it always helps the channel. Dennis, how you doing today, buddy?

Speaker: I'm good. And for everyone else, we are trying some new software, audio software today to record the podcast. So ah levels might not be perfect. Audio might not be perfect on this first go. So bear with us, which is why Jared is saying we're perfecting the intro because we've done it eight times already.

Speaker: there You know what? owe yeah If you guys ever wonder, I mean, we're 139 episodes in. i think this is

Speaker: yes that is This is the 139th episode. And I'm pretty sure you guys get, you've you've gotten enough ah you know insight on what it's like ah to, you know, our interactions between each other.

Speaker: But what you guys don't know. is my buddy has the worst case of perfectionism I have ever witnessed. His chase for perfection. I mean, it shows in his work. I'll give him that. He does put a lot of effort into things, but man, there's not a single detail that goes by that he does not completely obsess about.

Speaker: Well, yeah, I want the audio to sound good. ah It is important on a podcast. yeah with with faces for radio agree audio has to be at an absolute premium but yeah sometimes it's it's a lot yeah well buckle up buddy buckle up buttercup

Speaker: well what's up man how are you I am ready to get on a plane um i am all set I'm ready for Austria I completed all my knives today Actually, I only had sharpening to do.

Speaker: So um yeah, it's been awesome. How many? ah Nine folders and five fixed blades. Gotcha.

Speaker: Yeah. So one more than I expected. um So 10, 11. ten How many is that total? 14. Wow. You're good at math too, dude.

Speaker: Nine plus five. they They don't do that simple math in in design. Simple? That's why they make calculators, dude.

Speaker: ah Yeah. this this This next drink comes to you from my Bussie's cup. Your Bussie? Yeah.

Speaker: B-U-C hyphen E-E apostrophe F. Yes. but Every single person looks at it the first time and goes, what's boosies? There's a good reel. There's a really good reel about boosies.

Speaker: Love to pop that bussy.

Speaker: But anyways, yeah, I just thought you should know that. Yeah. But yeah, I spent the day sharpening. had to sharpen 10 knives today, which is a lot.

Speaker: That's a lot of knives. Yeah. But I have enough holders that I can do three or four at a time. Did you finish that that zipper case that got us all high?

Speaker: Yes, I did. i Yes. ah Jared was surprised that I was going to attempt to sew a ah zipper case myself.

Speaker: no And yeah, it came out all right. I mean, it's not, you know. super professional but if i handed to you you'd be like yeah it's a zip case it's it's black it looks like cordura it's yeah it works it it i would have known known the difference because i was high as a mug i was sitting about a foot away from dennis spreading uh contact cement yeah and wo That was a freebie, buddy. It's so funny because when I use it in the shop, I don't either. I'm used to it and I don't smell it myself. But even I was like, man, that's really strong. Uh, when I had it in the house at the kitchen table.

Speaker: Um, yeah. But, uh, yeah, I don't even smell it. It doesn't even phase me in the shop. I can, I can concur, but it was, it was something extra special.

Speaker: Well, you were standing right over it too. So I had my fucking nose inside the can for some reason. It was weird. And for those of you wondering why the hell I would attempt to do my own zipper case is because I needed a large, large, large one, six by 24. God, please somebody clip that. Somebody please do me that favor. Jared's mine. Like a four-year-old. No, if I let those go, Noah literally texts me and tells me what a shit bag I am for letting things go. But that one, my friend is for you. it is not going unnoticed. Dennis needs a large one.

Speaker: Yes. A very large one, a six inch by 24 inch. zipp That's right. so For the dagger. Because i'm not I did not want to bring that big metal case with me because it just takes up way too much room in the suitcase. I don't disagree.

Speaker: Yeah. So I wanted to just bring soft cases, which I'm going to give the knives away in the cases anyway. So I got to bring them anyway. Might as well have knives in them. Cool.

Speaker: Yeah. So ton of sharpening today. And yeah, nice to have them all. oh They're all packed away now. I got it. Pack my underwear and my shirts and all the other crap on top and I'll be good to go.

Speaker: All your dead blows? All my what? Oh, no, it's not dead blow. What's the guy's name? the undies you have. Deadpool? Deadpool. Sorry. Dead blow is a comic character, sir.

Speaker: div i'm like do You want me to bring my dead blow hammer? What are you talking about? No. Deadpool. Yes, Deadpool. Your Aquamans, your Deadpools, your Spideys. No, Aquaman. I have Reese's and Deadpool underwear.

Speaker: Okay. In case anybody wanted to know that. Now they do. ah Yeah, but I'm ready to go. I'm anxious, actually. I'm looking forward to it. I'm even looking forward to the flight there. You believe that?

Speaker: No. No? No one's looking forward to a ridiculously long oh wait a minute what i might have a different take on it if i was balling like uh you know like tarot knife works uh yeah we got nice seats um yeah should be good uh i'm i'm charging my airpods as it as it is as we speak dude you are progressing so much i remember when we went on our first trip to uh first couple trips uh to blade uh you were still rocking the old uh giveaway in the box uh airpod wired ones and i couldn't convince you that the airpods were the way you you were no i i was easily convinced i just was cheap and didn't feel like spending oh two hundred fifty dollars on them

Speaker: Yeah, that's for sure. But you're like, no, these work just fine. And they do. I'm still fine with the wired ones, but yeah. Well, good.

Speaker: I broke down and got them for, um why did I get them? Oh, I think I got them for the shop originally. And then I never wear them because I can't hear anything while I have a man and that annoys me. So I like to know what's going on in the shop and be able to hear things.

Speaker: So. What about when you're grinding? part of that is great being able to hear we're going to talk about that later because that's one of our topics today um you got to use all your senses when you well not all of them but when you're grinding yeah you do do you do have to use quite a bit of yeah so um so you don't wear ear pro at all i do not for anything um i mean if i was using a power hammer i would but um i don't for the press because it's not like not even just regular forging yeah no not even when i'm forging because it's not it shouldn't be that loud that it's hurting your ears if you jared don't miss your work piece and hit the anvil and it won't be so loud that's frightening i mean the recoil yeah

Speaker: I have done that. I've done that in a class before, i like talking and completely missed the work piece, hit the anvil and almost bounced back him in the face. Yeah. um I've forged with a handful of people that will

Speaker: completely disagree that you should have your bro when you're forging to. Really? Yeah. it was It was kind of a shocking take for me because I was like, huh.

Speaker: I guess if you do it all day, every day, like if that's your thing and you forge every single day, I think that's probably the the case. Um, there are like some things for a reason, like when I'm, if I'm going to spend some time on the bandsaw doing my most favorite thing in the entire world, uh, you know, Jareding new projects that will sit on the shelf for a long time.

Speaker: Um, that shit will make my ears ring for long time. I agree. The, the port of bands are super loud. Yeah. Yeah. Um, but I mean, that's like saying, i don't know, do carpenters use ear protection when they're hammering all day? Cause that's about, it's about the same volume. We are hitting a nail into wood. So maybe that's a little different, but, but I mean, it's metal on metal.

Speaker: it Yeah. Well, I mean, I, now they're using, like Yeah, yeah let's get let's get real here. We're just showing our age here. No one's using a hammer anymore. No one's using in fucking a hammer.

Speaker: Touche. That's funny. Yeah, but um I am ready to go. Got the AirPods. got ah Hopefully I've remembered everything that I'm thinking about bringing.

Speaker: Do you need to have like power converter or something or others? I do. for Yeah. We had, because we bought one for Italy, so we already have one. Okay. I gotta, I gotta take some pointers here pretty soon.

Speaker: Um, yeah, but you're staying on a cruise, right? You won't need one.

Speaker: Yeah, that's a good point. Unless I need one in the hotel.

Speaker: I mean, ah you can borrow mine, but you um you probably won't need it. is The only thing you'll need it for is like a hairdryer and a razor. I mean, nothing else really.

Speaker: I don't know. I don't have i mean, my your phone will plug into the regular jack and all that? They will probably have USB ports on the... ha Okay. At most hotel hotels I would do, unless it's a shitty hotel. Okay.

Speaker: But that's true, actually, you might, if you need a um the little converter thing for your phone, those things usually auto switch. I'm sorry for chewing ice.

Speaker: I just realized I did that. Oh, didn't hear it. Good.

Speaker: um Yeah, but um looking forward to the trip. Don't know really what I'm looking forward to the most. Is it the show? Is it touring Austria and Germany?

Speaker: Um, yeah, I don't know what to expect. So, uh, it's, it's going to be good. Expectations lead to resentments, my friend. So it is my experience to limit your expectations and just enjoy the moment and let it happen.

Speaker: Hard to be disappointed if that happens. Well, that's true. That is right. That's your insightful tip that you asked for. okay.

Speaker: Earlier.

Speaker: Um, what's new with you? Oh man, it's been a week. It was a week. Um, where do I start off? Uh, at the beginning, it's probably a good place.

Speaker: So last week I said that Jared got ah a new car. My son got a new car. it was a stick shift and we embarked on, uh, teaching him how to go. We had a, uh, a first, maybe I did that on Monday but when we recorded.

Speaker: yeah yeah yeah Yeah, we did. about that So then had a couple more tries out there and then he went out on his own a little bit. But now he's out and going. I think I finally gave him the go ahead to to go back and forth to work at first.

Speaker: That's like 13, 14 miles away. um And then now he's venturing out a little farther. still keeps stalling out every now and again but uh i just find it hilarious it's it's great i just love it it's like learning i didn't i didn't i didn't stall that or like oh cool cool and then oh man i stalled it twice yeah well what happened well you know what was the circumstance oh you know you keep talking about hills i'm like ah um dude there's no you haven't seen a hill yet bro no no

Speaker: okay Get him to drive in San Francisco. i was just going to say, man, start off on California street. That's going to be a nail better. With the car behind you. and yeah, you're on that incline. That's, that's some high rev right there, buddy.

Speaker: You're smoking your tires. at the they were

Speaker: Did you teach him like the, the toe heel method kind of thing? No. I don't even know the toe heel method.

Speaker: So you can, I was taught this. I never actually used it, but where you, you have your, what is it? Your heel on the clutch. And then you can put as your heels, your heels on the clutch.

Speaker: And then you're the tip of your toe is on the accelerator. And then as you let off the clutch, your, your foot's going on the accelerator so that it never actually comes or is it the break?

Speaker: uh i for uh no no no sorry your your foot your heels on the brake and your your um the tip your toes on the accelerator and then as you're coming off the brake you're going on the accelerator and letting out the clutch at the same time i 100 did not teach him that okay i don't i don't necessarily agree with the other way is the emergency brake yes Yeah, which is that is the cheating way. but Yeah, it's all cheating.

Speaker: just I was just trying to have him target some RPM points and yeah i'm just barely give it a little bit of gas and then and then let out and you'll catch it. You just got to figure out the play. and yeah But anyways, he's doing good. So that's cool. um And then... ah So i think last week I was talking about I had a little...

Speaker: episode at at work in

Speaker: that really, really really had a I had a really shitty start to the next day.

Speaker: um So I talk about mental health and all that stuff and and support and all all kinds of stuff, right? Because I'm definitely not normal. So um every now and again, when the shit hits, it...

Speaker: it it hits pretty good. So I was all kinds of negative self-talk insecure. um just, you can just the litany of all of the things that are a company, um, a bad time.

Speaker: And, um, I started driving to work and I was just in my head and, uh, get probably like, I don't know, halfway there. And the sun started coming up over the mountains, which I get to see most mornings. I'll talk to my grandmother and then, ah but I have been doing this a long time. The recovery process for me has been, is a thing it's ingrained in me. And what I do, and what I know for certain is that when you have experience and tools um to combat this these things,

Speaker: the if you stay in that moment, because that's that's not under your control, but if you stay there, that's a choice, right? If you have the tools to to get some kind of remedy going,

Speaker: and you don't apply them, you're making a choice to to sit there. Um, so I know what to do. So I started making some phone calls to my support group and was not able to, to get anybody cause I, I get up pretty early and and go to work. So all my, my people are not answering the phone. So now I'm still just stick with myself. I'm like, fuck these people. Nobody cares. It was, I mean, it was bad. Um, so then, you know, I'm sitting in stop and go traffic and, uh,

Speaker: I, uh, I shoot a text message to, to, to a group and I, and I'm basically just saying like, guys, I'm fucking feeling it right now. um I know this is going to pass and I just, I need to be accountable. That's one of the things for me too, is like, there's a saying that says you're only as sick as your secrets. So the longer I sit with that in my own head, I'm in dangerous company because that's just a bad place. So I try to get accountable, get honest, vulnerable, tell people what's going on. So I'm not keeping the shit to myself and letting it brew up. um And I was like, yeah This is what's going on.

Speaker: i know it's going to be all right. ah Processing it, you know, da da lada dada da da da and then i start to have a ah little chat with my higher power and ah which that relationship goes in and out all the time.

Speaker: And I hit send on the text and i stop and I kind of exhale no more than two seconds later. Boom, I get rear ended.

Speaker: and I thought you were going to say you rear-ended somebody. No, no, no, no, no. I know you think that because you think I'm a horrible person in a driving, but that's all incorrect. But anyways. That would been very apropos after our discussion about how youre drive how you drive last week. yeah i drive I drive 100% awesome. there's I have no that is a false view. Okay, so how did you handle the rear-ended?

Speaker: you in it i could, man, I almost, i to be honest with you, I almost fucking cried. i was like, I was so fucking angry. And I was just like, what what else? I mean, and you gotta understand though, I'm in this poor me spot right now.

Speaker: And I get out and... yeah know I pull over, go out, look. Thankfully, man, nobody was injured. Both the cars were basically fine. It was a super minor. um But a lady, no license, no insurance. I and it just i was i was just like, what the fuck?

Speaker: yeah know She had no no license and no insurance? No, we're in California, dude. You don't have to have a license here. Get out here. What fucking crazy? ah yeah yeah yeah, I mean, I have to have a license and I have to insurance, but no one else does. So anyways, that's whole nother topic. But ah so um yeah.

Speaker: So long story short, it just, really shitty day that day and like i said her you process everything you go through it and everything gets better um and and you get to the other side and you're you're like go see shit wasn't really that bad but um yeah that was a that was a tough it was a tough a couple days i guess it was about two days i was probably in that spot um and then you know hold on i gotta stop you so when you started this this little talk here you started talking about jared

Speaker: And him driving. And I look down in the notes and it says car accident. I'm like, oh, please, Tony, Jared. Yeah, no, no, no. I spaced them apart to make sure. Because I didn't tell you this on Sunday because I wanted just to do it here.

Speaker: um But, yeah. So. Last time I was in a car accident, somebody rear-ended me too, a few years back. So anyways, but then I don't know. I just started getting all super anxious driving and i don't know. It was just every now and again, I'm a basket case. So I like to pretend i can have some normalcy in my life, but I'm i'm really not that well. So.

Speaker: And I hope to God I'm not the only one. And I say these things, you know, I try to be honest here on this, on this, this medium, because, you know, it's, it's all I really know how to do most of the time, except when I'm lying. But ah yeah, ah somebody somewhere has got to understand it just, it was, it was the, it was a time for me to go through that. But, you know, on the, on the flip side of it, let's just kind of get through it all.

Speaker: You cannot enjoy the other side because for the most part, life is great. i'm I'm doing better than I ever dreamed that I would do. I'm clean. you know All these things, yeah beautiful family, all these great things happening, right?

Speaker: But for every all of that good, you got to deal with some bad, and that's just part of life, right? um But when you're in the middle of it, trying to recognize that is just sometimes just ridiculously hard.

Speaker: And I know it's harder for others Um, or some than others, but, uh, you know, it was just, it was that for me. Um, so that happened. And then, uh, and what else? And then then so much did your, did your week get better after that? Yeah. Everything got, I ended up in a good spot.

Speaker: Um, and but like it always does. So, um, I finished the knife that was That's really good. And then I'll tell you that. So a couple this bag and a knife making there on top of, you know, all the the shitty feelings and, you know, crap that I was going through there.

Speaker: Man, I had a moment where I was. It was when I had finished the handle and it was the. the Oh, I had already talked about it. Anyways, when I was taking the tape off of the the knife from from doing the handle work.

Speaker: I just truly expected there to be just like the the world's most shittiest handstand job, like for some kind of something to happen. And then I just, I started going through this whole, I'm a shitty maker and you know, like you don't do anything about it. It was just, it was fucking bad. Dennis. I was just really, really, really lame place. um But I, today i was just looking at after we etched it out and I took a video of it. I was like, man, I'm,

Speaker: they did a good job. So trying to give myself a little bit of a, he probably but the hybrid one, right? Yeah. Yeah. No, it looks awesome. Yeah. So I'll, I'll do a final video on that. Um, probably tomorrow I got to deliver it. Um, Wednesday they're back here. So I'll sharpen it tomorrow and it'll go home on Wednesday.

Speaker: Um, and then onto the next. Nice. So yeah, that was cool. Good. I'm glad you got one on your belt onto the next two. Yeah.

Speaker: I may be in, I mean, I've committed, but there may be four knives finished this year. Wow.

Speaker: We have this quarter. We have two, two done. All right. So, but yeah, that was good.

Speaker: Really, really, really good. I do want to wish my brother a ah happy birthday. It is his birthday today here in this time zone, but I was just, he FaceTimed us while we were doing one of our million check-ins. And it's actually...

Speaker: tomorrow there. So in Japan, he's in Japan. Sorry. Yeah. Um, so I was telling him, I'm like, it's not even your birthday. Yeah. He's like, no, it was yesterday.

Speaker: ah but yeah. Um, he's, what was he doing right now? oh he's at, in, at Hiroshima right now visiting, doing that, but, uh, love that kid.

Speaker: Um, he's not a kid. He's 42 now. And, uh, just want to wish him happy birthday.

Speaker: And he's four. Wait, he's 42. How old are you? 47. 47. Wow. You got the big five Oh coming up in a few years. I do. you do just wait. How old are you? Oh yeah. I'll hit it before you hit the big six. Oh, huh? That's right. All right.

Speaker: Mine'll be better for Jared. Maybe got to get there first. Shit.

Speaker: Yeah, so anyways, that's that. And I'm fired up for... i' I'm really having fun being in the shop. So we got to go hang out with you again on... What was that, yesterday? Yeah, Sunday.

Speaker: Yeah. And we etched some knives and then worked on one of my stragglers

Speaker: that I got to re-etch. Yep. And what are you going etch that in? I'm going to use ah the most awesomest etchant of all called Gator Piss.

Speaker: And if you are into making Damascus knives, um whether you do your own Damascus, but I would suggest if you don't have press and you don't have all that stuff, you can just go to Baker Forge and Tool and get yourself some high quality, high quality,

Speaker: See what I did there, Koi? High quality pattern welded steel. Koi, what's he got to do with all this? boy Sitting on a gym there, buddy. Yeah, you got clean it, etch and protect it. You can clean it with a Grime Reaper and then etch it with Gator Piss, one of the three varieties. That's the OG blend, max or heavy, max for the stainless.

Speaker: And then protect it with Gator Skin, the nano ceramic protectant that will just beat off all the water. Beat it off. Just beat it. Just beat it.

Speaker: Just beat it. um This week, by pla they have a... but I mean, they have a... yeah ah but and A new thing. and They have a brand new steel that's coming up ah for pre-order. um It's called a Dark My Eclipse.

Speaker: um This is going to be a limited run. And they are going to take pre-orders. They started already. So when you hear this, um they're going to take it until they reach their capacity. But this is you make an order for whatever size and length that you want.

Speaker: And yeah, get that in. What what is that? do you know I haven't seen the picture. What is the Dark My Eclipse? oh You're going to have to look it up. okay i can't remember sounds captivating it is right up my alley dark my eclipse yes it's coy very good naming what yeah i like you i thought it should have been number six five four three two seven two five nine three four four two two right I thought that would bring it home just as just as awesome as Dark Money Clips, but whatever.

Speaker: Okay, so it's got like a black cladding, a black core, and then it looks like it's got nickel with alternating black and copper layers kind of in the middle.

Speaker: So it's like a band of like copper, um

Speaker: of lines of copper in the very center of the blade. It looks really Turn the audio on. He says it's a cross between... two patterns that they do, but I can't remember. it's the, like, it almost looks like that volcanic river one they do, but with black on the top and black on the on the core.

Speaker: It's dark, dude. Dark. Dark. Yeah. It's dark. Dark. So, yeah. Yeah, it looks good. Very cool. Me likey. Yeah. And then I got, a i we, got a ah care package from our good friend Matt at Grip Tech Composites.

Speaker: Keep the change, you filthy animal. I'm going to be an animal. Apparently we have a lot more options for sound bites and I can't control this. i have no say.

Speaker: um and I'm, I'm not responsible for look, look, you get the pole out your key.

Speaker: Okay. Thank you, Dennis. Thank you, Dennis. Thank you very much. Yeah. No, I'm, I'm, I'm ready. I'm not even going in the shop. I got the, I got the air compressor turned off. Uh, I got no reason to go in the shop tomorrow. oh I got to cut the grass tomorrow too.

Speaker: Um, I have like bullshit tasks to do tomorrow. well cool Oh, yeah. ah the The Wizard Forge raffle went off this weekend. i actually ah saw that um live. had my fingers crossed to get some of... I think it's...

Speaker: carry, uh, under carry development, or I can't remember off the top my head. Um, he'd make some cool golf divot tools. And some of those were being thrown in on the raffle and, um, I had my fingers crossed and don't ever win those things, but, um, that went off really well. Um,

Speaker: really cool. Example of how our community gets together to rally behind and support each other. um So wishing Oz and Jess the best. Hopefully all that helps out and they get a good nudge in the right direction.

Speaker: Actually had ah our good buddy ah Brigham Condell reach out to me to try to find the raffle. And this was like a day before. And ah got him hooked up and he got himself a ticket and sure shitty one.

Speaker: text me I text him, i yeah you good little shit, you won. and then he was like, ah hit me back with a really cool one. He goes, see, it pays to be one of the seven listeners. So I thought that was pretty cool.

Speaker: What did he win? He won a knife. i don't Yeah, I don't remember. It was actually a pretty cool one. Really awesome prizes there. So cool.

Speaker: Very cool. Yeah. Glad to see that went through. And we had a we have a listener question from Mr. Brigham Kindell. Are you stepping in contact a submit? I bet you were done. I'm looking at his last name, which you spelled wrong, and that's what was throwing me.

Speaker: How did I spell it wrong? I think it's K-I-N, isn't it? think you're mistaken.

Speaker: i don't think I am. I'm going to look it up. it

Speaker: Pretty confident here, buddy. Yep. K-I-N-D-E-L-L. Bring him Kindell. Yes.

Speaker: Say it. Say it. No. You get to say it. Not me. I had a right. You had it wrong. Sure.

Speaker: um yeah he had do we want to get into that you got something else we want to cover uh no i'm good we can roll yeah so he had i guess it was a question the way it was written um just it jar it was jared yeah so it was jared more of a topic um just discussing design and flow of knives is that did i get it right yeah yeah i told you i left out the of uh yeah i'm used to shorthand um yeah this is kind of wide open

Speaker: that just good that's kind of a wide open statement um i don't know i'll put it to you first how do you come up with the design if you're looking at a new design look you don't have an answer you don't immediately defer to me all right i have an answer but my answer going to be long so i'm going to give you a chance to talk and i think at this point uh there's some times where i I dare say that I'm interested in hearing your take on this because I think the design and the flow of a knife is something that I, I would, I'll still continue to struggle with. um

Speaker: I do like to see makers continuously evolve. um So somebody like me right now, i have a few knife ah designs that I have made and due to, you know, lack of production there, I think I got many knives like that to make before they get, um, a little, uh, stale.

Speaker: Um, but I actually was taking some, uh, I sat down this weekend and was taking, um some bits and pieces and trying to come up with um some tweaks on, on the designs. And ah i was actually didn't come very easy for me.

Speaker: um I think part of it was, you know, I don't draw very well. um And then um I spent most of the time thinking about why aren't you just doing this in CAD?

Speaker: Because you're a fucking CAD designer. I'm nodding my head, yes. I absolutely refuse to do it on CAD. I know I'm kind of you know against the grain on there, especially with all the technology and everything going on there.

Speaker: But I find it frustrating and therapeutic to sit with a pen in pencil and a paper and try to you know work that stuff out. But um

Speaker: um I think I've effectively dodged that question with some fancy ducking around.

Speaker: so i'll give my take on this um it depends like i'm having a hard time approaching this question because if i look at it like okay i'm making a you know a full tang edc knife which like i know a lot of people are in that you know that that's their wheelhouse if i was like okay i'm designing a full tang knife and i'm gonna play around with the design i mean there's you know you're talking about shapes and profiles okay and um how the hand how the the spine i'm looking at like transitions of spine to handle and making sure that flows i don't want any you know abrupt you know weird curves unless it's a purposeful thing like i'm putting like you you have that little

Speaker: what do you call that a thumb well on the top of the night? I don't know that little scoop on the top, which is cool, but I don't know. It's the echo swoop. The echo swoop. Um, you better plan that. Um, the, um, but it was original. I'm but i'm pretty sure i ripped it off. Yeah. Um, yeah. I mean, I'm looking for those kinds of things, but as far as like a new design design,

Speaker: I don't think there's a ton of new design. What I will do is like, oh I, I like that part of a knife. A hundred percent. And, uh, and I'm gonna, and I've even like, okay, I'm gonna, I'm gonna take a picture of that guy's knife. Cause I like this part and I'm gonna, I'm gonna incorporate some kind of styling of that in my next knife. I'm not gonna copy it, but I'm gonna use some aesthetic of that.

Speaker: And the buoy that I just did, the one I put in the video today in on Instagram, if you saw that one, well, you saw it anyway, the copper one. Yeah, you've shown me three times.

Speaker: Yeah, which is not a normal um design for me because I don't normally do that really sharp recurve. So there was some aspects of that that I picked and used and still kind of kept it to my style.

Speaker: I don't, I think though, I'm very fond of a ah hard slant on the ah front. The front of what? The ricasso, the bolster, their you know the grind, the plunge line.

Speaker: know what I'm talking about? You're talking about slant on the front of the handle. The slant on the front the handle. That's something I don't see from you ever. yeah There's always your knives are always really curvy and I hate to say it, but like flowy, right? Like there's always like a very, it's not very abrupt anything. Yeah. I don't do very many angular knives. No.

Speaker: um So that, that's actually one of the, ah the more drastic differences to me in that knife besides the free curve. Yeah, it's the front of the guard the guard drops. like it's It's a very angular guard. I even had a few people go, oh, that's that's different. I haven't seen many like that. And it actually took some doing.

Speaker: I think I mentioned this before because I had to account for the handle being almost three quarters of an inch longer on the top than it is on the bottom because the guard is angled.

Speaker: which is a pain in the ass. And if you don't account for that, it messes up your handle geometry. But anyway, back to bren um I was going to say Brindle. I'm going to call him Brindle.

Speaker: Mr. but I'm going to shorten it to Brindle, not Bingo, but Brindle. um Design and flow. I mean, I just, I want to look at a knife and I don't want to see, i don't want anything that like really jumps out at me as like something that's like,

Speaker: kind of jagged on a knife or that doesn't belong it needs to flow end to end end end that's it that's what i was just gonna say from the from the butt to the tip yeah a nice gentle yeah uh because i've seen i'm not picking on anybody but i've seen a few posts and these are like first second knives in some of the facebook groups and and i don't I don't reply to these people. I don't berate them or anything, but you can look at You can tell their first knives because they have some of those first knife things that happen. Like we all did the, the big cliff on the front of the handle. And, uh, you know, the weird, you know, the, the, the transition from the Ricasso to the front of the handle is weird. Like it's got some straight part of the handle. Like yeah you need to,

Speaker: Pay attention to that thing. For one thing that is I really notice now in hidden tang knives is when the handle, so this is hard to describe, but um think of the ricasso and you've got the guard.

Speaker: The handle, the bottom of the handle underneath should be exactly in line with your ricasso. It shouldn't be bigger and it shouldn't be shorter than your, cry you your eye should flow from the ricasso into the handle, even though there's a guard in the middle, it should flow there. And if it's off even by a little bit, it looks weird.

Speaker: Same with the spine, even though it's a hidden tang, the spine should transition. you know, imagine that the guard's not there because sometimes the guard has got a big tine or a quillian.

Speaker: the spine from the knife should flow into the handle. And it should be exactly the same height as your ricasso. And if it's not, you better ask yourself why. You're probably not using the right grinder.

Speaker: I mean, that's probably 100%. Because if you had an Ameribraid Fastback 2x72, then it's kind of almost automatic that those two things happen. So go get yourself an awesome machine. ah Dennis and I both rock the Ameribraid in our shops. You can use the discount code TTT10 for 10% off accessories and ah TTT for discount off of machines. um And they have all the awesomeness. ah And accessories variety to get you where you need to implement all of this wonderful talk about flow and design of your knives. So go do that now and make it easier on yourself.

Speaker: It's and i'm not saying it's automatic, but it's damn near automatic. Okay.

Speaker: and the and the the nice tilting rest that has that auto zero back to 90 degrees man whoever fucking invented that and even better whoever like actually used it whoever read the instructions and figured out what it was for whoever stressed so hard off of putting something easy put together stumbled into a YouTube video where that came up. That is the best thing you've discovered in the last two years is that feature. I was going to say, yeah, I mean, next to, yeah, there there there there's a there's a little joke there, but anyways.

Speaker: Yeah, or the other thing that you could help you if you're going to forge your knife, you could definitely use your two bastards. fat peen that has a little bit of automatic awesomeness to it as well. So if you want to beat your ricasso and spine into complete matching harmony with your um handle handle, thank you. God, I just totally lost it. It was fun watching your brain work there. It just stopped. That was not working. Yeah. Go get yourself a two bastards. Smithy and supply. Franken needle. Get you hooked up with that. They got all kinds of varieties of peens. They have straight cross diagonal around.

Speaker: Double-ended, crisscross, curved. Yeah, they they got you covered. So go ah check it out. Because you know what I always say, Dennis?

Speaker: What do you say? I say, ain't it grand to have a fat peen in your hand? Indeed. Yeah, team peen fiend. Team peen fiend. Yeah, say that ten times.

Speaker: So I hear you're not going to be coming to Blade next year. Yes, that's 100% official. Man, I'm already taking applications for Jared's replacement as my wingman.

Speaker: Yeah. If you like ah hanging out with lumberjacks, have at it.

Speaker: Bears, lumberjacks, chainsaws, yeah, whatever you want. Yeah, unfortunately, ah this year, it's not going to happen. um Next year?

Speaker: Yeah. And you're saying this year, but you mean next year? Well, technically, yeah. This next upcoming one, sure. Yeah. Because I already went to last year's.

Speaker: this is this year's i this is really semantic but especially yes especially especially especially don't know irritated me what irritated you yeah initially x especially let me let me ask you a question this like This is a good one for the subliminal message for the guy it's intended to. So anyways, love you, dude.

Speaker: um That's like saying expresso. That also drives me nuts. There's no X in espresso. Yeah, i I don't even know what I did, but I got called out for doing something. it's It's all a good one.

Speaker: um Anyways, ah yes. So

Speaker: It is my wife and I's 25th anniversary in June. And, um, so it's, uh, I think any other time it would be a a difficult choice, but this is not, not the case here. Um, there's not many more things I'm more thankful for and proud of in my life than, um, being, a part of a union as long as we have. And, um, so we are going to, uh,

Speaker: do it big yeah i think she should be celebrated for putting up with you for 25 years i don't disagree sir not one bit uh yeah maybe i won't go to blade uh in a couple of years when it's my 10th anniversary 10 is not that big well it is for us

Speaker: and since my anniversary is very close to blade when's your anniversary what what's the actual day uh june 22nd 22nd okay yeah so i can't swing the uh june's always a fucking a bit you know so i had to kill my my june lake fishing trip that's the first weekend the blade got that nixed out and then um I'm really actually bummed about some plans that I had, um, made with some people. Um, but I always go see my buddies out after.

Speaker: So that tax on a couple more days. Um, and then ah come back and then I'm home for like a week and then it's anniversary. And then, you know, we normally go do something too as well. So, um,

Speaker: I could potentially take all of June off and be busy the whole time. So I just can't, I can't swing all that time off. So what?

Speaker: It's cool. Yeah. Well, we'll miss you. know. But life must go on. It will. I do seriously need to find someone else to help me at the table because I'm going to go insane if have to sit at the table 24 seven while I'm there.

Speaker: Yeah. Where's Parker? What? Where's Parker? Parker will be deployed probably. Oh, that's a bummer. Actually, I spoke to Parker yesterday. and i was just going to ask you. i meant to I meant to put that in the notes because I i haven't heard anything. or yeah no, I spoke to him yesterday. He's going to hear any day now when where he gets stationed.

Speaker: um So all his friends um are getting their orders and pretty much everyone he said got what they asked for. And he put his pretty general, he said West Coast. So, um you know, he. Way to be dangerous. It's better than East Coast. um So it could have been. Can't get stationed abroad or something?

Speaker: What's that? Can't you get stationed like some other country or something? Of course you can. Yeah. so You put in your choice. Why would you want to be stationed at home?

Speaker: Because some people want to be close to home. he He wanted either Japan or he wanted um like san San Diego. Okay, I agree. And there's a couple down the... Two great choices.

Speaker: Yeah, there's a couple... He ends up at Travis, though. I'm fucking... I'm talking a lot of shit. That's an Air Force base. That's not a naval base? I don't think so. I don't know what the other naval base is. I think there's one in Oregon.

Speaker: that is the air force and then Washington. i think there's one in Washington and I don't know where the other ones are. I did warn him that West coast also includes Alaska.

Speaker: There's one in Lamar. I know that for sure. Um, Lamar. Yeah. Hmm. But, um he should find out any day now.

Speaker: And I said, you better text me cause I want to know as soon as you find out, but he's doing good. He's a, he'll be graduated in, uh, like two weeks from, uh, from, uh, his A school and he will be an petty officer first class.

Speaker: so

Speaker: Very cool. That'll be exciting. And he'll get a raise. So he's excited about that too.

Speaker: Cause he's, you know, spending all his money cause he's 21.

Speaker: Like you should.

Speaker: But yeah yeah, since he's he's probably going to get to come home for Christmas, um but odds are once he gets stationed, ay he's he's probably going to get deployed within three months, which means June will be the worst timing.

Speaker: There's no way he's he's going anywhere in June. Nice. Highly unlikely. Well, maybe ah one of our seven listeners. Yeah.

Speaker: Yeah. I'll find somebody juliala who's going to help. You get a free shirt.

Speaker: that's That's what sold me, guys. And I'm pretty sure the first one I gave you didn't fit. Oh, 100% it didn't. It was like a fucking wetsuit.

Speaker: I'm going to give them the the shirt that has your face on it. Whoever it is, they're going to wear yeah the Hawaiian shirt with your face on it. Yeah. Maybe I'll send you with my Echo Blade shirt, the button up.

Speaker: I have my shirt, my TK shirt from Lawrence that I'm going wear. Yeah. So you got the polo, right? Yeah. version of yours?

Speaker: Or is it the button-up? No, it's a button-up. Okay, yeah, have I have the same. It's a short-sleeve button-up. Yeah, yeah, I have the same echo plates. Then we have the the Triple T Polos.

Speaker: I don't remember getting one of those. Yeah, you do You bitched about it. I don't golf. Golf's for lames. ma way ma I don't know what I did with it. It must be my drawer somewhere.

Speaker: Oh, yeah, i know. I remember now. Yeah, Um, but, uh, yeah, I'll be wearing the, uh, the blue one, which I think is cool. So, um, what else?

Speaker: What you, you're shaking your head like a, uh, let's see, we're almost at an hour. We're going to skip our topic and keep it for next week. Let's do some maker spotlights and then, uh, I can't.

Speaker: I am highlighting this note here. I set you up for it and everything. I can't see what you're highlighting if I'm not scrolled to it.

Speaker: um Okay. Now I see. He wants me to do the maritime ad, folks. I set him up for it. Let's talk about the guy. but um So if you guys need printed shirts from Lawrence. Get a podcast. Yeah.

Speaker: If you guys need anything knife related, go check out Maritime Knife Supply. They got everything that you could possibly need. Steel, abrasives, equipment, tooling, you grinders, you name it, they got it all. Go check them out at Maritime Knife Supply and tell them you heard it here. Tell them you're one of the seven and he'll pat you on the back.

Speaker: was going to say i'll give you discount, but he probably won't. I mean, I don't know how you could discount these already heavily discounted items. He's got the best prices around.

Speaker: You'll put a little smiley on your package. How about that? well You'll get a mint. You'll get a sticker. Yeah, you'll get candy. That's right. That's the best part. Yeah. and And yeah, you can get a hold of some of our other sponsors materials there too as well.

Speaker: Can you play the damn soundbite? What soundbite? The one you've been playing. Thank you. Goodness gracious.

Speaker: And if if you guys need a kiln, you got to go check out Even Heat Kilns for the best kilns around. um I have to, Jared has to, all the cool people have an Even Heat. So be with the cool people.

Speaker: you know what i was thinking about? I was thinking about just breaking into your your house while you're in Austria and then using your Eveneat just to be a jack wagon. I think would be fantastic just to take a video me hanging out in your shop using your Eveneat.

Speaker: Because I have two. Using my electricity. Using your electricity, just completely taking advantage of you because that's all I do. uh i want to uh just yeah that would be amazing because i have two that's not enough i needed dennis's uh as well so go get yourself uh an even heat and you have an echo blades monogrammed one i do do you have one nazi no mine just has even heat on the front yeah don't worry if and when you get your uh

Speaker: fifth one, whatever we have. Yeah. It's going to come with echo blades on it. It'll be going back. Oh, yeah ah come on, Spencer. Don't let me down. Whatever you do, ship that fucker with the, with two door covers. If it has echo blades on the front it, I will pay for the fucking correct one.

Speaker: Oh, that'd be awesome. Hmm. uh let's do some maker spotlights i will even go first today oh wow i have um which is going to be a fellow exhibitor at um um knife show austria i have roan which is w-r-o-a-n rome dot custom dot knives And he's only got just over 1,400 followers. This is Adam Rowinski.

Speaker: I probably could have maybe pronounced that wrong. I'm not sure. um He's from Poland and he's got some really cool knives. the The second one in his um um in his profile there. I love, love the guard on that one.

Speaker: very cool so uh yeah that is ah really cool guard but i was just looking at the rest of it yeah that is a beautiful piece yeah it is and he's got these these kind of kind of carved um fullers that make it look like they're kind of etched in the blade and it continues through the handle which is really cool um little motif there that's gonna be available I don't. That's a good question. I don't know. Because i you can get that from me for Christmas.

Speaker: Thank you. It's right around the corner. Yeah, maybe. Maybe that one's going to be it in Austria. That is fucking badass but i can bad as knife All right. to Back to Brindle's, Brigham Kandel's question on flow.

Speaker: That is an excellent flow of a knife. The fact that, I'll call them fullers, but the the carving in the blade flows through the handle. The top of the spine matches the top of the handle. The ricasso matches the handle. like The flow of this knife is really, really nice.

Speaker: Good job. Yeah, I love it. Yeah, dude. Yeah, I was not following him. he's i am following him now. Yeah, and the the first one in the in his profile is one he's doing a giveaway um at Bladeshow Austria, and that's Martin there holding the knife. That is Martin. was going to say, that guy looks familiar. Yeah. Looks like Martin.

Speaker: It is. I never noticed Martin has tattoos on his fingers, or he was playing with pen that day, one of the two. Interesting.

Speaker: Planting with pen.

Speaker: Yeah, that's really cool. Yeah. It's got some, I love seeing unique ideas like that. That looks good. Yeah, that's, that's great. And who do you have this week? um I have ah something that I saw a bunch of when I was watching the wizard forge

Speaker: raffle And this one is Russland underscore revision. And this is Chris Nichols. I didn't realize he had 60,000 followers.

Speaker: So maybe I'm just late to the game here. But ah he has ah makes these skulls, knucks and all these cool little fucking things and I just absolutely fucking dig these things um they're cool they're fucking rad coins just a bunch of just different you're just talking about that that style ah you know they're forged just really cool stuff and apparently I've been living under a rock so but a handful of these were accompanied some of the prizes and I just thought they were

Speaker: fucking really awesome so i thought i'd give him a shout out tell him doing a great job and uh see if anybody else was not um or is living under the same rock as i was and needs to go follow him so Very cool.

Speaker: Yeah, it's cool. I love those things. And i'll give I'll give them some props here because although they look simple, those are, it takes some skill, like a lot of skill to do those things so cleanly.

Speaker: Yeah. i'm Like forging those little skulls. It looks like, oh yeah, you can whip one of those off. in ten they're They're very challenging. No, and they're fucking unique and cool and a bunch of different types. And yeah, it's really cool.

Speaker: I was a just kind of digging around in the page the other day, and I was just like, oh, God, those are really cool. so Yeah. That's a good one.

Speaker: Jump off the old Sackulous right there. and on i Dude, did I'm really digging this one, and I'm really digging yours. Nice. Well, that's some good maker spotlights this week.

Speaker: Yeah. Every week. Every week. Every week. Just another. For 139 times in a row, Dennis, we just delivered some awesome shout outs to some amazing makers.

Speaker: And it's just the small, it's the least we could do.

Speaker: Yeah, we're awesome. What can we say? You can say it again. Fuck. We're so damn awesome. I just hit 1,900 followers on EchoBlades. Wow.

Speaker: And I think it took me about a year and a half to get through 1,800. I haven't looked at mine in a long time. What am I at?

Speaker: Go to the gym. 12.7. twelve points again 12? 12.7, yeah. I have 12 and a half, 12 and three quarters of a person.

Speaker: That's really awesome. Maybe you found the other quarter of me.

Speaker: Yeah. So, yeah, i don't know. Get Dennis up to 13 and get me up to 2,000. Let's go. Yeah, let's do it. Follow the channel. Follow follow each other's counts and interact and, yeah.

Speaker: Let's get this thing going. Momentum. That's right. Like and subscribe. Smash that like button. I need you to do that in the next one for me, please. Could you you just me? I hate that so much. I know you do. i need you to do it. I need you to do it. I need you just to go. Yeah. Don't forget to smash that like button.

Speaker: And join my Patreon. One day I'm going to make a Patreon for this damn show. I remember I talked about, I had this realization not too long ago. I said I was going to do that not too long ago and I never did.

Speaker: You never did. I thought it was a knife. Yeah.

Speaker: ah Yeah. So you're without me next week. I am without you next week. And I got us covered. i thought of a million different things and I landed on the best option. So we're all ready rock and roll. All right. You're just going to use the old software next week, right?

Speaker: I guess. know how to use the new one. So. A hundred percent. okay Yeah, I figured. We will use the old one because. yeah I always get a little bit anxiety when I think about that, and I'm like, wait minute, that's it's easy.

Speaker: Yeah. have that I have the password. Yeah. I have a gripe here. I'm looking at this thing and apparently I'm in Tyrell Knifework Studio.

Speaker: And I would like to say that I believe I'm in the Triple T Podcast Studio. I didn't name it. So it's pulling up my name from my credentials since I started the studio.

Speaker: You should have used fucking triple T dot fucking podcast dot fucking ridiculously long dot email dot at gmail dot com. That should have been your credentials.

Speaker: Okay. I'll get on that just for you. Great comeback.

Speaker: All right buddy. Well, it's an hour and nine minutes and counting plus 45 minutes of ah trial and error and I'm ready to go to bed.

Speaker: Yeah. Well, I am ready to get my ass over to Austria. I get to hang out with ah Mr. Evan Davis since his table is right beside me. i think we're going to be doing a lot of chit-chatting from N Slash. I'm sorry, Evan. My bad, dude. i Don't let him talk you into moving your table at Blade either, bro.

Speaker: ah Who else? Trey is going to be there. Oh, he sent us a funny video not too long ago. A funny text message of him doing that some behind-the-scenes hand-sand-in-the-handles.

Speaker: You remember that? Oh, yeah, yeah. That was pretty good. That was a good chuckle. Forgot to shout him out for that. Yeah. ah who ah Who else going there? Gabe Fletcher is going to be there. Trey.

Speaker: Trey. Josh Prince. Josh Prince. Martin will be there, I think. You think he'll show up? Yeah, I'm thinking of all like the Americans that are are going over. um I can't think of any other of the yeah American folk that are going over, but those are most of the guys that I know that are going over.

Speaker: Yeah. Well, sir, I hope you have a fantastic trip, a successful show. um You brought some really awesome stuff. i hate giving you props, but i i was I took a couple pictures and was checking out the loot.

Speaker: Awesome work. um Take care of Kim and say hi to all the peeps for me. Will do. I hope to bring none of those knives home with me. I hope you don't either.

Speaker: hope you don't either. We will see. But either way, it's going to be a fun trip, and you guys will hear all about it in two weeks. yeah What if you come back you come back with only the dagger?

Speaker: That'd be hilarious. but da The dagger's not even coming back, so that won't... That's what I'm saying. What if you got stood up? like I think that would be fucking hilarious. oh well I have a major deposit on it already, so that wouldn't hurt my feelings.

Speaker: worries that. no no worries of that I know, Dennis. I was just just trying to be funny. Sorry. sorry i'll just I'll just say goodbye. Good night, sir.

Speaker: You can't tell me what to do. Hey, thanks for listening. That's the only one I don't have. I didn't copy that one in here. Thanks for listening.

Speaker: ah yeah had Okay, let's go. Hit hit me up. Let's go.

Speaker: Hey, thanks for listening. That's a wrap. need a vacation. I need a vacation.
