Speaker: what's up everybody welcome to another triple t podcast for knife makers for the fifth time this evening we are coming to you live again for the fifth time ready to start your morning off right and some awesome uh cool conversation here with my buddy uh dennis terrell from terrell knife works my name is jared from echo blades and again this is the triple t podcast coming right at you for the five millionth fucking time We're having some audio issues tonight and having to start this recording again and again and again. And again and again and another one. world where. In a world where we repeat the same intro five times.
Speaker: i almost want to just stick in my and announcer voice. Hey, Dennis, let's go, man. and like ha but la So how have you been? I'll start out.
Speaker: I've been fantastic, man. I've just ah been traveling the world. I just got back from Texas. ah I got back on Thursday evening, which I felt like I was gone for like a million years, though, because I left at the butt crack of dawn on Sunday and flew out there. did a somebody ah i was talking to somebody. i can't remember who it was. think it was just a random friend and And they were at a airport in Dallas, I think. And they were heading to Cancun or some shit like that.
Speaker: And they're like, and I'm like, oh, hey, I'm on, I'm laying over. I was in Vegas. And there and i was like, yeah, yeah, I'm heading to it for a convention. He's like, oh, another knife convention? I'm like, no, even worse. It's for sprinklers.
Speaker: ah But what do you do at sprinkler convention? Like y'all sit around and talk about water flow and bullshit. an accounting convention would be interesting yeah no it you you know what and oddly enough um i actually had a really good time so it's kind of very similar to any convention you're gonna see people you know that it's like a reunion type thing for sure for a lot of the i guess the owner types you know company people that you know been in business for a long time that participate on the uh
Speaker: the The organization that puts it together is um one of two main sprinkler things. But yeah, so there's a lot of, you know, like reunion type thing. So very similar. um But we showed up with like...
Speaker: I don't know. There was probably 40 or 50 of us between all the corporate companies that have merged together. So our company, it was, you know, made a pretty big presence there. So we had bunch of corporate people, um which was cool. I got to kind of navigate a a new environment for me. I've been part of a mom and pop shop for the majority of, for all of my life until the past couple years.
Speaker: So kind of branching out and meeting new people and, discussing that kind of stuff. And then there's a shit ton of seminars. Cause yeah, ah we have to have some kind of accreditation and to get credit station, we have to participate in classes and get your CEUs and stuff like that, which for me being a designer for all these years,
Speaker: And now that I'm in management, I don't get to design anymore. So to actually sit down and find some subject matters that were, you know, design specific.
Speaker: um And there's some changing things like parking garages with EV chargers and car stackers and things like that, where the codes are changing and the the design criteria for how we're protecting those things um is evolving as technology does.
Speaker: There was some cool stuff. And I was very like, it because i there's a couple times i was I was pretty nerded out. And to be honest, the most fascinating class, which I thought, because they're not all bangers, right? You're just kind of trying to get some credits.
Speaker: One of them was what I've learned in 50 years in the business. And this guy, he put on an amazing, uh, talk and it was just kind of all about like management, coaching, team development, like all this stuff. Like that's, that's the moment where it kind of sat in like, yeah, you're, you're pretty lame, Jared.
Speaker: Cause I generally despise sprinkler talk and, and like talking shop and doing all that. Um, But every now and again, you get involved in that and you kind of get motivated. And I think to be an effective leader, though, you have to, you know, stay relevant, stay up to, you know, up to date with everything, learn how to lead, you know, all that stuff. I got to be responsible because, you know, this does pay my bills. and And there was a brief moment where I was actually feeling a little pride for being a part of fire protection and fire life safety.
Speaker: We protect lives and property.
Speaker: Rah, rah. Yeah. There you go. That's good. So you learned something? I learned a bunch. Yeah, actually. <unk> met Met a bunch of cool people. And yeah it was at the... Overall, yeah.
Speaker: Overall. It was at the yeah the Marriott in San Antonio. And... um home of the Valero open a, a PGA tour place. That was pretty cool. I may or may not have golfed.
Speaker: Um, and then yeah, the food was okay. It was not, I had this salad Dennis that I have. Are you going rave about a salad dude? I have never.
Speaker: yeah. Anyways, as, as I shrink in size, I guess salads become more appealing to me, but the, uh, I don't even know what it was because I just kind of grabbed it, but I meant to go back and find it because it was it was it was really good.
Speaker: And it was watermelon and cucumber that had like some spice. So it was sweet and spicy type thing. Bro, it was it was phenomenal.
Speaker: Taking away your man card. It was phenomenal. i Did you have carrot juice with it or what? No, but I asked for carrot juice.
Speaker: And then for the rest of it, it was just like all the, uh, Texans like to put jalapenos in the cornbread. Yeah. i love that. And I could, I could leave it.
Speaker: Um, desserts are really good. Bunch of, yeah. So it was cool. It was, it was, it was all good. And then we went to this, this ranch, like 30 minutes outside of, from where we were saying bus ride.
Speaker: That was, it felt like forever. Um, And that was really cool. had a live band playing a bunch of bunch of music. And i don't know. You've been around me enough.
Speaker: Like, I can't be around that kind of stuff and not gig out and just want to get up on stage and start singing and dancing. And i was walking around telling a bunch of people like, Hey man, I need a battle buddy. And they were like a battle buddy for what? I'm like to fight all the boredoms with you lame ass fucking people here. Like none of you want to get up and going. And the thing with sprinklers, the installers, the fitters,
Speaker: they They drink. They're notorious for for getting hammered. So about an hour and a half into that thing, then everybody was kind of feeling my vibes when I first walked in. but It took them all to get a little courage juice in there. but Saw an armadillo.
Speaker: Oh, they're cool. Yeah, it's kind of meh. But there was an armadillo race. What? It was Armadillo Race. Like on purpose?
Speaker: Yeah. Oh, I didn't know that was a thing. Yeah, neither did I. But we had this guy there who was kind of super cheesy. He was like, who you're talking to the world's most famous Armadillos. This Armadillos, these guys have been on TV and they've been featured in this and this and that. And did you know that Armadillos have a 14-inch... No, I'm kidding. But he was like you just doing all these you know crazy facts and stuff like that. And apparently they're supposed to be slow.
Speaker: But one of them was on... some armadillo meth or something. Cause every time I've seen them, they like go like a bat out hell.
Speaker: Oh dude. do They like, you they may have put gloves on and kind of like you, you get to like guide them like left and right and kind of like motivate them to move. And my buddy actually did it and volunteered. And then some of the participant was like a six year old kid.
Speaker: So his dad went down and and I was just like, f bro, if you beat a six-year-old kid, like, and sure as shit, man, that that kid's armadillo took off like a fucking bat out of hell and fucking smoked him. He didn't even stand a chance. He didn't even get a chance to be a good Samaritan. It was hilarious.
Speaker: But yeah, and then, oh God, it was like 95 with more humidity than I care to ever be a part of again. that shit is brutal.
Speaker: yeah absolutely It was the same temp here, but we didn't have humidity. so du And I will still, I don't know how many, however many times I ever experienced it. When it rains, it's supposed to be cold.
Speaker: You've only lived in California. This is the problem. It's supposed to be cold. And that was not the case. It was like, and now I understand that when it rains, it gets more humid.
Speaker: Like it was gross. yeah I've never prayed for a gust of wind so bad in my life. because god This is horrible. But, uh, yeah, it's not fun. yeah It was fucking hot. He was 98 degrees here today.
Speaker: Oh, it's hot right now. Yeah. Must've been worse by you. Yeah. It's like a hundred. I mean, I was over in your neck of the woods all day, but, um, yeah, it's supposed to be like, like this all the way through the end of the week.
Speaker: ah Yeah, and then cool down for next weekend. Yeah. Yeah, I almost took the jet skis out this weekend, but I decided to work instead. Hmm.
Speaker: but Feeling the stress, are you? No, actually, I'm not, because i was supposed to have a four-day class last week, and at the last minute, my student had to bail because he had some...
Speaker: um, emergency in the family that, um, he had to pay and he was coming from Canada. So, uh, it was, oh lord yeah, I think it cost him a few bucks. i obviously didn't charge him for the course, but I think the flight and, uh, all that, he probably did not get a refund on that. So that sucks. But anyway, we'll rebook the class. But, uh, what it did is it gave me four to extra days. So, um, I ended up working on, uh,
Speaker: starting buoy that i was not planning on doing for the show so um i don't know if you saw and in my stories but it um well it's almost done actually i'm waiting for some etchant from ah baker forge uh i'm waiting for some gator piss to arrive from baker forge to etch this thing because my from where from baker forging tool okay um And if you guys need some premium etchant or you want some steel to etch, go get it at Baker Forge. Get yourself some of that gator piss, the natural variety, the max or the the heavy and get some Grime Reaper to clean that steel and then some gator skin to protect it.
Speaker: um The steal of the week is, the drop this week is Gradient Go My Chevron, which is an awesome one. Ooh, yeah.
Speaker: So why get it in the app early. Use the discount code TTT10 for 10% off. um But yeah, I'm waiting for that Gator Pass. So the blade, and everything is done.
Speaker: But this one is, um I guess I've been looking at so many of the Brazilian makers, I figure I'm going to do one that has that. I'm using like the the belly of the knife and then it has a curve this way for the recurve.
Speaker: you Know what I mean? It's like a sharp recurve. Mm-hmm. Like I'm doing that just because I've never done it. And so I'm, I'm doing that. And all I heard was you saying that you're getting a Brazilian.
Speaker: Getting it. Which I support if that's your thing, man. I'm all for it. And it's just, it has a very slanted guard. It's there's, it is not my typical Bowie knife.
Speaker: So um I think it looks cool. Is it mono still? No, it's that. Remember I made like three feet of Kumai. Uh, it's, and part of that was a thicker piece cause I knew I was going to make ah a buoy knife out of it. So, um, yeah. And I ended up doing it now cause I had an extra four days.
Speaker: Nice. So, um, yeah. So it's done. The handle's done. Um, yeah, I think it looks pretty bitch and I'm anxious to see what it looks like all etched and party. I did not catch the story.
Speaker: Yeah. I, it was like a, just a work in progress shot in, um, in the story. But, um, yeah, I think, uh, I think it'll come out nice. Um, so that was kind of like the surprise buoy.
Speaker: Um, So yeah, and I i i actually, this is probably one of the fastest times I've made. I turned it around and I decided Wednesday that I was going to, Wednesday?
Speaker: Tuesday or Wednesday that was going to make it. And I was done by like yeah Saturday, Sunday. Like do you know I could have finished it Saturday. I was doing like handle shaping. The only thing I did today was like I buffed the handle.
Speaker: Um, so, uh, I could, which I could have done if I put in a full day Saturday, I could have done it all. So it was pretty fast. Um, four days to do that, that buoy. So yeah, it looks good though. I like it.
Speaker: It's different. Nice. And it's big. It's the blades probably almost 12 inches. So it's pretty big. Yeah. It's a big one.
Speaker: Hmm. So, yeah, that's ah big knives or folders. That's what's going to to Austria. All right. Yeah. And when is that? That's the 20?
Speaker: We leave the 21st. So just over two weeks.
Speaker: Yeah. right All right. So when now I'm in sheath hell. um i call it sheath hell but i really only need three um three sheaths to make um remember the the one i was having problems with the frame handle buoy that had that tiny little warp so i fixed the warp um which i was very happy about i did manage to get that out with a little bit of heat without fucking anything up um didn't have to pull the handle off um so all that's fixed
Speaker: And, um, but I think it's still. How much heat? i Uh, uh, heat gun heat, not too much. okay. Yeah. That's what I was trying to get at.
Speaker: Yeah, no, I didn't. I, no, no, not a torch or anything. Just heat gun and, and. Pressure. Yeah. ah Yeah. I actually did it while it was in the, um, the clamping jig with like cloth around it kind of thing.
Speaker: But um i what I did notice is like thewge is the the false edge is off a little bit on one side. It's a further down on one side than the other.
Speaker: So because I know it's there, it's not, I'm not, it's for sale. I'm not putting in my MS set. so So I'll be working on knives.
Speaker: Well, not when I get back because November is crazy busy for me. Like crazy busy. But, um, what's happened in November.
Speaker: So the week I get back, so I, we get back like a Sunday, ah the 31st, um, 31st of Saturday or Sunday. I don't remember.
Speaker: Um, think it's Saturday. Uh, so we get back then, uh, that Thursday, John, Norwood and Spencer are coming for four days for it Thursday through Monday.
Speaker: um They leave a day later. It's not confirmed yet, but I have a class, a two-day class. Still waiting for confirmation from this student.
Speaker: Then that weekend I have a class. Then midweek the next week I have a class. And then the next weekend I have a class. So I have like a shit ton of classes and then it's um Thanksgiving.
Speaker: So it'll be a super busy week. Just bang, bang, bang. I have like a, oh yeah. And I'm going to Idaho. Sorry. That weekend after um Spencer and John are here, I'm going to ah Brian Hunt's house for a class. That's the class. So I have to travel for that one.
Speaker: And then a midweek class and yeah. So it'll be legal it'll be crazy, crazy. and Good. I just put the ah the John and Spencer in the calendar so I can yeah take a day off.
Speaker: Take that Friday off or something like that. Yeah, that'd be cool. We're going to be forging that day, I think.
Speaker: oh What are you going to use? Uh, steel. No, for the forging. Um, what do you mean? Like, what are you going to hit the steel with? oh Oh, well.
Speaker: Essentially, we're going to hit it with a press, but I see where you're going. I see what you're doing here. You picking heaven up what putting down? ah If we have to hit it with a hammer, we're going to be using ah a multitude of two bastards hammers. all the pe I got all the peens, man. i got the straight, the curve, the crisscross, the cross, the diagonal, the reach around. my God. i have an amazing idea.
Speaker: The reach around town. You want to go downtown with the reach around? That's right. It gives you favorite pain when you're on the scene. That's what I'm talking about. The reach around pain. It's a new one.
Speaker: Yeah. Uh, you guys can get yours at to two bastards, Texas Smithy and supplies. Go get them. Um, yeah. Tell Frank and Nita that, uh, the boys of triple T sent you.
Speaker: That's right. Uh, dude, we need to make ah fat pain. um die ah fat peen die yeah for the press so you can get all mean on that uh with the press get a fat peen press a fat peen press now we're going to be making the pine cone pattern oh that's the pattern we're going to be making And because it shrinks well down to folder size, because we're going to be making folders with it.
Speaker: And it's not a really super complex pattern to do. I think we can do it in a day, maybe a day and a half. So hopefully we might start Thursday, actually, when they get here and get a get some of it done then. We'll see.
Speaker: But yeah, because I think they get here at like one o'clock. So um and from Oakland. So we'll see if I'm not. maybe Maybe it's four. Actually, I got to look. at There's what a reception for two good old boys. Well, I'm saying that you're going to fly him into oak And John's never been to California.
Speaker: ah You're going to love it, John. You're going to love it. We haven't met a single person that hasn't come here that says, okay, I get it. I get it. I sent Spencer a screenshot of the temperatures from this week, and he's like, oh I'm going to fucking die.
Speaker: oh shit. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah, he was a tank top in like 20 below, all right? Yeah, he said, ah yeah, well, I'm still waiting for it to cool off here. And he sent me, that it was like a high of 46. Oh,
Speaker: goodness gracious. Yeah. Being from Anchorage, they're they're a different breed. yeah Yeah, no doubt. Yeah. Yeah, cool. All right. Well, I just locked that in. So, yeah.
Speaker: But yeah, what else? It's my birthday week. Oh my God. Did we, is that part of the other recording where I was teasing you about VML? That was part of the other recording. What was that? Recording number three?
Speaker: Yes. I will be a whopping 56 years old this week on Thursday. Dude, the jokes just don't sting twice, but yeah.
Speaker: Yeah, they do. That's bicentennial plus some, buddy.
Speaker: Yeah. It's old.
Speaker: um But yeah, we went out went out with some friends for dinner Saturday night, downtown Livermore here. had a Had some good food, a few drinks, sat in the hot tub for a while.
Speaker: And yeah, it was good. So warm yeah, I don't think we're doing anything this weekend. I'll probably work all weekend and get some more shit done.
Speaker: i I got a feeling going to have all these sheets done this week, which means, um, I'm going to be probably working on another folder next week.
Speaker: Hey, did you see my video on this guy? I did. Yeah, so I'm holding up this Oceanic that, um first of all, has fucking, if I do say so myself, has bitchin' filework on this one.
Speaker: um Just the last few times I've done the filework, then I've done the liners in black, anodized in black, and it does kind of mute the filework, but when it's nice and shiny, and this one is so symmetrical.
Speaker: It looks awesome. I love it. I love it when the filework's nice and shiny, but This one has the button release here. Yeah, that's what I noticed. So you just, and this one's a little tight right now. I need to loosen it, but. Yeah, that I was going to bust your balls, ah not on the show, but yeah, I want to see that thing drop.
Speaker: Yeah. Yeah, this one's a little tight. But I thought that was cool. It was actually Mike V that um sent me a video of, um because he knows I like doing the back locks. And he sent me a video of that one of um someone who had done that button release. Because then you don't need to make the little relief in the in the liner.
Speaker: to like get your finger in there. Um, so the button is kind of cool. like I like it. Yeah. And this, um, this, uh, raindrop carbon fiber is pretty schnazzy too. Yeah. That, that did come out really good.
Speaker: Yeah. Yeah. I'm happy about that one you so You know what else happened on my way to, uh, Texas for the first time? So I, I've been flying a lot and,
Speaker: I normally don't even ever consider that I have something inappropriate in my bag, but yeah, this is funny because it happened to me.
Speaker: Yes. So, but I guess when I went to Reno with my brother, I put my Spyderco PM2 Tanto Tanto in my bag.
Speaker: And you know me, I like to not be at the airport with a lot of time to spare. So I get there and it goes through the the thing and I get dinged.
Speaker: And they're like, you have anything sharp pointy in there? I'm like, nope. And then they're like, well what's this? You know, and they pull the knife out and i'm like, fuck, dude. I'm like, how am I bad? You know, and I'm like, right, well, what do I do?
Speaker: And then I was like, isn't there a place where I can mail it back? Cause I know some jack wagon that had to do that. Um, and they were like, yeah, no, we don't offer that here. This is at Sacramento. So they were like, well, you can go back down to the, uh, to the entry and check your bag in And I'm like, ah, fuck, I really don't want to do that. But I'm like, all right. So then I, I go there, she gives me horrible, to horrible directions.
Speaker: And, I have to wait in line. There's like a family with like 50 sniveling kids in front of me and and they're checking all their bags and and I'm, I'm, I'm maintaining, I'm not losing it. I'm being good.
Speaker: I'm just like, everything's going to work out just fine. And I'm surprised he had enough time to do all that. Well, I didn't cause I get there when I finally get to my band and she's like, Oh, we can't check this in. Your your plane's already boarding.
Speaker: I'm like mother. So thankfully that airport's pretty small. So I get up on my, my horse and I had to run back to the car cause I wasn't going to check the knife.
Speaker: I ran back to my car, threw it in there, get back through all the security, still maintaining. Um, and ah finally get to to the gate. And for the first time in my life, I had my name called on the loudspeaker in the airport.
Speaker: Jared Sandoval, final calling for boarding to Las Vegas. Jared Sandoval, final calling in three minutes or something like that. And I was like down the way. And I'm like, I'm here. and they're like, and then I get on the plane.
Speaker: Cause it's like fucking six in the morning on Sunday. I get on the plane, bro. There's like fucking 20 people on the plane and I'm the jack wagon holding everybody up and I walked through and I'm just like, okay, I'm here. you know, it's not a thing. They were just all super annoyed with me.
Speaker: Um, yeah, that was kind of embarrassing, but anyway, see, it happens to everybody. Yeah, it can. am i it's It's hilarious because I'm like, I'm not even going to look because I know there's nothing in there.
Speaker: But then when she points it, i was all these memories, I'm like, I haven't seen that knife in a little while. So, well, yeah, it was in the bag. Oh, but.
Speaker: That's all right. Well, live and learn. Yeah. Now I'm on the fucking travel list. The no-fly list. Yeah. You know, I'm...
Speaker: did do you get Do you ever get anything delivered from Walmart? Never. Never? Oh. Well, Kim's like on this like Walmart delivery. She gets everything delivered from Walmart, which is nice because like now this is this is new for Walmart, right? And I think they it's smart because they realize that just about every city has a Walmart in it.
Speaker: so now they'll they can do like it's not only same day delivery they can do rapid delivery in like an hour because there's a walmart in every city that's full of shit right full of stuff full of stuff you can buy whatever um so i the the cheapest place i find like i i just got an order for um and i thought i had some in stock i got an order for um uh carbide um straining hammer okay which i saw on my website if you guys need a straightening hammer go to tyro tyro knifework.com slash shop and uh go buy straining hammer Um, but, uh, I didn't have one in stock and I thought I did.
Speaker: I'm like, fuck. Okay. So I ordered 10 of those hammers from Walmart. I get one package at one 30 today.
Speaker: I ordered them this, which is cool. Cause I ordered them this morning at like 9am. I get one package. No, it was like even before that got one package, like 11 had two hammers. I get another package at one 30 different delivery.
Speaker: two hammers in it. Then I get another one 8 p.m. that has six hammers in it. I was like, how are they making any money if they have to deliver three times? So obviously they didn't have enough at one store. So there was like three different Walmarts delivered hammers to me today.
Speaker: I don't know how they're making any money, but I was happy that they all got delivered today, which is hilarious. That is funny.
Speaker: Man, the world is... yeah it's changing. You really don't have to leave your house anymore. Yeah, I mean, I was... It's great. And, you know, whether you like a Walmart or you don't, they do have a lot of shit. And the fact that you can get anything that quick is pretty cool.
Speaker: I'm not opposed to Walmart. I just... I've never had the delivery. No, it's pretty fast. Faster than Amazon. That's for sure. But...
Speaker: Yeah. So I'll be making some, uh, carbide pretty sure. hammerst tomorrow i may be incorrect, but we door dash a lot of stuff. I think door dash has gone to Walmart, but not Walmart directly. So I hate, the lord I have like a hate on for door dash. I'd rather get Uber eats than door dash.
Speaker: Hmm. It annoys me that DoorDash changes the fees for things that you order. Like that, that is, it just fucking annoys me.
Speaker: You know, they do that, right?
Speaker: Yeah. Yeah. We're like the super platinum members though. So we don't get, our fees are waived. Yeah. But when you, when you look at the cost of something at a restaurant,
Speaker: You're not looking at the cost if you go to the restaurant. You're looking at the DoorDash. Well, they got to make a they got to make some money. No, but then but then there's their fee on top of that. Yeah. and the tip for the driver. So you get dinged three times. Sure. But you haven't left your house. Yeah, but Uber Eats doesn't do the increase, but not that I know of, increase the prices. It's worked in there somewhere. there It's worked in there. They just aren't.
Speaker: They're just, I don't know. I always found Uber eats to be cheaper than DoorDash.
Speaker: So time is money, man. Yeah. Time is money. Did you know that yeah as an Uber Patreon, you have a rating?
Speaker: Yes. Associated with you. Sure. I was unaware. so Same with Uber. That's what I'm saying. Yeah, yeah. Like Uber, ah you as a customer. i Yeah.
Speaker: yeah As a customer. Yeah, that's what that's. Yeah, i I was totally unaware. I was just because I ah it was kind of weird. The the
Speaker: My stay got broke up into two. So I was at the main hotel for two nights and then I had to check out and stay down the street for one night and then come back for the last night, which was a giant pain in the ass.
Speaker: It was extremely inconvenient to kind of, cause I didn't realize it at the time, but I had to like get up for class and then hightail it back make sure I was all packed up again and then go stash my bag, get somebody else's room for a couple hours because couldn't check in to the other place. And then add had Uber 12 miles away, 30 bucks. That's far.
Speaker: Yeah. Or it was five miles away, 12 minutes. Sorry. Okay. Yeah. So it was just a hop skip. was like 30 bucks to go there in the evening and then drop my stuff off, check in and then Uber back.
Speaker: And then go do whatever I did and then go back home. So it was like 90 bucks and fucking Uber trips. And then course, get true spent morning you're expensive. Yeah. Either way, it it was just, it was just a pain in the ass.
Speaker: And I couldn't, cause the, the trip in the morning was like $15. So there, there must've been, you know, some increase of the primetime travel or something. Yeah.
Speaker: yeah But anyways, on my way back, I was talking to to the Uber driver, and we were just bullshitting about something. And he looked at me, and he goes, huh, you pissed somebody off, huh?
Speaker: I'm like, ah what? And he goes, yeah, you got you got like a 4.92 rating as a passenger. And I'm like, what does that mean? I'm like, I never, i wasn't aware that they, you had a, you know.
Speaker: And he's like, yeah, did you you get in an argument with somebody? or like He was like pressing me pretty hard. And I was like, no, I'm probably the same guy you're talking to right now. mean, you're going to give me a shitty rating? You probably farted in the Uber. I must have not tipped him because that happens to me a lot. I'll get out of the ride and then go about my business. And then an hour later, I'll open the thing up and it says, oh, don't forget to tip fucking whoever.
Speaker: And I may not have done that or something, but yeah, they gave me a 4.9. a four point nine So I was talking about that at dinner with some people. And of course, everybody there had five star rating except for my good buddy and my boss at a 4.87. And I was like, yeah, ah finally someone agrees with me. You're a dick. Yeah.
Speaker: ah it's probably you're not if they down star you for not tipping it's probably because that's a problem with uber like that they have to hit you up after and sometimes i close the app and that's happened to me yeah yeah but i guess they have they have to rate you though and he's like yeah the guy's like i know i mean you got to be a real dick for me to like not give you a five star as a passenger you know But they put that in place because if they give you a low rating, then like some internal thing, they'll never pair you with that. If that ever, you know, happens again or something like that. I don't know. englishs got
Speaker: And you get a low enough rating, then when your trip comes up, Uber drivers are ignoring you. Yeah, yeah yeah yeah for sure. so So anyways, yeah, I thought that was hilarious. so I had no idea.
Speaker: Yeah. And same with DoorDash. DoorDash does the same thing. So you're you have a rating as a DoorDash customer.
Speaker: Interesting. Yeah. Because I have friends that do DoorDash and they can, if someone like is an asshole, they will downstar them as well.
Speaker: Downstar. That's must be a new term. It's a new verb. I just invented it. Downstar.
Speaker: So did you make did you get into the shop? Did you do anything knife related? I did. i was in the shop yesterday. Oh, let's hear it. Yeah. i
Speaker: Weird. um I think I just had an acid flashback. That was kind of cool, actually. the fucking hole of my whole vision just went run um yeah I what did I do yesterday i I was doing a last time I was about to do a glue up and then i looked at the knife and was completely disgusted with the hand sanding so I redid that um
Speaker: And then
Speaker: pinned it all up, and I'm ready for ready for glue up on that thing now. um But I did a little post, like a story. a story Oh, didn't see Sunday night.
Speaker: Yeah. and Because the handles are fucking super cool. I think they're... jh hugh custom and j hugh customs customs yeah jq customs yeah don't know h comes from but oh it's because hugh starts with an h um but uh yeah they got the uh he's got some hybrid ones where they have like the the lava kind flow yeah i have figured you remember seeing those in your show yeah so that those those are looking really cool and um anyway so i posted this
Speaker: thing and it was like uh don't know i was looking for audio and it was like october november december just commit work on fix on one thing change one thing and you can get this thing done until you know through the end of the year and it was some kind of like half-assed motivational thing but um i posted it for myself because i got i got to get some things done and uh i'm kind of trying to transition back into number one just being motivated to do anything um and trying to keep that.
Speaker: So anyways, but I, I made the post in this morning, I opened it up and had like, I don't know, 200 views on it or something like that. And I started like just scrolling through like who had, who had seen it and seen it, saint it and, and, and, and liked it and whatnot.
Speaker: And Dennis, I had this flood of anxiety and like imposter syndrome, like was at an all time high because every now and again, going to tell you for every now and again,
Speaker: i forget that, you know, Jared three years ago had a list of people that he followed and was inspired by, looked up to, you know, like there's some makers that are just, you know, extremely awesome people ah do amazing work.
Speaker: And i was just kind of scrolling through this thing and I was just like, God, it just kind of hit me like a ah weird overload of, uh, it was like panic. I don't know. It was weird, but I got incredibly insecure and I was like, all these motherfuckers that I used to, you know, just like, Oh my God, they're the, you know, the best, you know, like the majority of them are friends now, you know, and you know, I know them personally and like, i don't know. I just, I felt like I was not,
Speaker: not worthy or, you know, like I was questioning my work and like, it was a weird thing. I haven't felt that way in like a fucking super long time. Maybe like the first blade show that was fucking extremely nerve wracking when you're trying to show people that, you know, other makers and stuff.
Speaker: I don't know. It was really weird. And bro, you are on like some mega zooming in and out. salt yeah That was fucking, that was wicked.
Speaker: that was a major ride right there um yeah dude it was weird um and you know i i'm i've totally set myself up for all this shit talking in the in the in the good in the good spirited you know jabs and stuff about making and and things like that which it's all good i'm that's not ever been a problem but i don't know it was just a a very weird moment of just like man, you know, maybe I suck or, you know, blah, blah, blah, or this and this and that. And like, it's just a bunch of negative self-talk and, um, I got through it. I'm a, I'm good now, but it was, it was a really, really, really awkward, weird moment, um, this morning. And it just been a long time since I'd felt like that. So,
Speaker: yeah I thought it was worthy of me talking about and curious if anybody else ever, you know, feels that way. And I think we all feel that way once in a while. Yeah. It's just different levels. You think it changes over time, but you know, we all have that imposter syndrome. It doesn't matter who you are.
Speaker: Yeah. But I mean, there's a, there's a handful of you guys. i mean, you're probably in that, I mean, you are in that group too, but you know, 99% the time, you're fielding positive feedback of like, Oh my God, you're so awesome, dude. Like, yeah. Oh, oh Dennis, you're just like, you're the best maker in the world. You're just such a great, you don't even try. Dennis is just like, yeah, yeah.
Speaker: was just wake up and fucking piss excellence, dude. That's right. every new man Yeah. Oh God. Yeah. Fucking YouTube channel. oh Yeah. It's so good. Yeah.
Speaker: are you done no but yeah i am done but yeah not not really but yeah so um and not that i don't get good feedback and stuff when i when i do things but uh yeah very equally i'm pretty sure somebody could rip my shit apart if they they chose to do so but likewise for you as well but yeah i don't know it was just weird and i felt i needed to to bring it up so Yeah. Well, it happens. We all, we all go through time to time. Just got to work through it.
Speaker: Yeah. And it's part of, part of the human, human condition. Yeah. But you just need to get in the shop more. That's, that's what it's telling you. Yeah. No, that's ah probably a thousand percent, you know, the, the, uh, the origin of it all, but it felt good.
Speaker: I did. uh, it's, it's weird Every now and again, ah you know, the small processes that when I think about making a knife, I don't and think about how many things that go into like just doing, getting you to the next thing.
Speaker: I'd have for the this particular knife, for whatever reason, um and i keep going I keep going back to your dissatisfaction with the jet. And somehow my the hole sizes on my knife, i had to drill out the holes um to to eighth inch because I was using the 30 bit is the smaller one.
Speaker: I don't know. I don't i remember. I'd have to look at our chart. Yeah, I think it's the 30. Anyways, I had to thin out the ah the pins. Yeah. Yeah.
Speaker: And I was sitting there like a fucking monkey fucking a football for a minute.
Speaker: Oh, man, sometimes we need audio. I mean, video. And I was just like, why is this not working? And I was like, oh, yeah, you moron. up But, yeah, it's all ready. And then I totally talked myself out of fucking trying to glue it all together. So I'll do that here in the next couple days.
Speaker: Yeah. I was speaking of pins. I was fucking annoyed today. I ordered some eighth inch copper pin stock, but I just, I couldn't find it anywhere. So I just, and I think I needed it in a hurry. So I just ordered it off Amazon.
Speaker: But I fucking get it. i haven't used it. i got it up like this I got it over a month ago. I haven't used it yet. So, oh, I'm going to put a copper pin in this Kumai Bowie knife.
Speaker: I go to get it. I'm like, oh, it's like just for some reason I just took the calipers and checked the pin. And the pin is like 116 thou.
Speaker: Instead of 125. Like, it's not even fucking close. Like, it jiggles in that, you know, like a hot dog down a hallway. was going to say, there's some familiarity there, buddy. and i was so So now I have to peen the pin into the hole.
Speaker: Peen it in the hole and dome the pin. So that's what's going to happen. Every time I use these fucking pins now, I'm going to have to... peen them and dome them sounds so sexual but oh my god that's so much material there but we're a family show dennis so i'm not gonna act like a 12 year old you really you just take it i'd be a yeah even though you just said hawk hot dog down the hallway peen dome like you've you've made all kinds of sexual references yeah So you you haven't listened to last week's show with John yet?
Speaker: I did not get the opportunity to to listen to it yet. What a fail. but I did reach out to John and tell him thank you, appreciate him for filling in, and was looking forward to meeting him and all that good stuff. so Yeah, he did good. It was good. and It was good to hear. It was great having him in the um in, well, so far, the last Knife Maker Challenge. um But, yeah, seeingn did you watch his video with the – Yeah, that was one of my favorite. Yeah, yeah.
Speaker: So, yeah, he all down. like the shop tour more than anything. Yeah, same here. That's what I told him. i Not that the build was bad or anything. i He does awesome stuff. But i thought I was just, like, very enthralled and, like um like, just, yeah, entertained with him kind of taking us around the shop.
Speaker: Yeah. Yeah, well, that's basically what the podcast was, him talking about, you know, the... um you know progressing how he built the shop and what he had to do and all that stuff. It was fun. It was fun episode. but Nice.
Speaker: Yeah. So, yeah, I think it's going to be a blast having him in the shop here.
Speaker: Yeah. you so You had a feeling about what? ah That was going to be your guess. Oh, really? Mm-hmm. Oh, look at you, Mr. Kreskin. I don't know what Kreskin is.
Speaker: The amazing Kreskin? Mm-mm. Is that a 56 year old thing? Yes. Yes. yeah like It is from, the Jimmy Carson show, bro. Let me just tell you this. I want to thank you because in my world these days, i am now becoming the old dude.
Speaker: Like I, I find myself making references that these younger cats don't do. Yeah. And, uh, It doesn't happen with you. So thank you.
Speaker: Yes. I know all your references, unless they're like dumb music references or, you know, West Coast. Yeah. Yeah. Yes. There's some differences that we have that I know we don't relate on, but.
Speaker: Yeah. Mostly music taste, but. Yeah. You just, you're horrible.
Speaker: ah No. You know who's not horrible? There's a bunch of people that aren't The boys at Griptech. Why don't you tell us about Griptech? Dude, Griptech. Some awesome handle material. It is so grippy that you can feel it even after the stranger.
Speaker: that's ah That's an amazing feat right there. Are you going peen and dome and, you know, do all that other stuff? You should sit on your hand for a while. You'll still feel it. Anyways, uh, grip tech composites, the maker of grip X, uh, grip X 3d limitless.
Speaker: it's got some new products out with the, uh, new color shift technology, a bunch of new varieties, Um, this week, the featured color is yellow. Speaker: um Um, yeah, I've been, I got a stack of belts that have been used and, uh, yeah, it's been crazy. Yeah, I actually ah grabbed one of my old Jareded blades and reprofiled it out um in a moment of being tired of hand sanding.
Speaker: So I ripped through. a You know, what's that's that's another cool thing is, you know what you you don't have the opportunity to do because you finish things?
Speaker: Is keep something around for years and years and then pick it up a couple years later and look at it and go, wow, that looks like shit. Let's let's make this cool. I have a couple knives that I have sat on the shelf um on that underneath the sandpaper. There's a few knives that have been there over a year.
Speaker: Huh. Yeah, that's, yeah. So I ah put in a clip or not a clip, but a swedge and a couple other things. But yeah, it was cool. It's an awesome machine. Kicks ass.
Speaker: You know what else too? I saw that, um, our buddy Jaden from Fox river, Fox Blake, Fox stream, Fox something,
Speaker: uh, got a, uh, a new attachment from Ameribraid. And i saw our, our good buddy, Ryan Coakley from the hustle and grind told him, Hey man, did you use the, uh, whatever their lame ass discount code is, uh,
Speaker: It will not be mentioned here. And he goes, oh, no, I didn't. And I chimed in. I was like, no, that's because he used Triple T 10. So, duh.
Speaker: But, yeah, it was a cool little back and forth. Yeah, would he get a wheel? ah forget what he got. I think so. I think it was a wheel. It was a wheel will or a... Platinum?
Speaker: Radius platinum? Radius button. Yeah, sorry. No one could see this, by the way. Well, they weren't supposed to. i was thinking the rotary. The rotary was in my in my brain.
Speaker: ah You were doing the radius. I trying to say roadie. The international symbol for radius. that that that that the Hey, brother. Either that or you're trying to rap on a mysterious table, one of the two. That's right. Yeah, I DJ on a vertical table. rica i every e
Speaker: Yeah, his ah his last drop that has all those scales from Sharky looked really good. You seen those? Yeah. Jaden's drop? Yeah. Looks good.
Speaker: He did a good job on those. Yeah. yeah And I know he's been um he's been working on some folders too. I know he's, because we've been going back and forth on some mill skills and some milling milling usage. So nice yeah he's he's gearing up.
Speaker: Gearing up. I'm just looking at this notes and and I don't know how this transition is a good segue, but when we left... Texas, they had a big storm come in and my plane, I left at like 11 and i got out of there. No problem.
Speaker: My plane in Vegas was delayed an hour, but a handful of people left like an hour or hour or two after me and they're, their shit got stuck and delayed like eight hours.
Speaker: Like that some, I think somebody had to stay another night there. Somebody drove to another airport. Like, yeah, it was a pain in the ass. All I had was an hour delay in Vegas, which I, for the first time, I've never done this, but you gambled the night before.
Speaker: Yeah. A night before ah my buddy gave me a hundred bucks and told me to go throw a hundred bucks on the wheel of fortune. machine. And he's like, Max bet, just do it. He's like, we'll split the, uh, whatever you win if you win.
Speaker: So I'm like, all right. So, and for whatever reason, dude, this fucking Vegas bitch ass. Oh God. I land and the gate tells me that I land into the sea gates terminal or whatever that's called.
Speaker: And it tells me I'm at B 25. So I got to hightail it all the way across there. It's not like a million miles, but it it was a pretty good five, 10 minute walk.
Speaker: Get over to B25.
Speaker: Find the machine. go, all right, this is the one. i drop a hundred bucks in. Boom. Hit the fucking spin. First, first spin.
Speaker: Boom. I hit 150 And I was like, no fucking way. Yeah. And because I'm such a cheap ass, like I would never max bet anything. And I'm probably going to put like $10 in and I'm not going to max bet that. So I wouldn't, going to win like 150 bucks.
Speaker: 10 cents, you know, like I'm gonna win a dollar 50 something stupid. So when I realized that I was dumped, you know, that I got, uh, getting 150 bucks, I was like, Holy shit. So then I, I just stopped. So you won 150 or you're up 50?
Speaker: No, I won $150. Oh, so you're at two 50, like total. I'm at two 50 total. Okay. So I, I, I look at it and I'm like, you know what?
Speaker: I'm gonna walk away. yeah I called my buddy up. I'm like, I was like, dude, we just won 150 bucks on the first spin. Are you good? But before I made that call, I had to go deep inside of my spirit and know that the good Lord was watching me because I would be a liar if I didn't just think to myself,
Speaker: I lost all this money. Sorry, dude.
Speaker: I cashed out a two. was 246 bucks as it was the win. Cause I guess they, they only paid me out for the, for the $90 or whatever it was. It came out to 246, the voucher.
Speaker: However that worked out, or maybe they had an airport fee or some bullshit, but yeah ah yeah. But I was looking at this voucher and I was just like, Hmm, So that, yeah. Anyways, I called him. I'm like, well, this is where we're at.
Speaker: So, you know, 75 bucks for doing nothing. It was pretty cool. You are the one guy that has one at the airport. I apparently, yeah. Because they are notorious for having, like, everyone says never play the machines at the airport because they are rigged, like, to lose way more than anything else.
Speaker: I was around, there was a shit ton of people still trying But there was a person in earshot and he was talking to some lady and he's like, yeah, this is bullshit. They never win. And I was like, b me evening meeting and I was like, oh man, the fucked up part, of course it landed. Like it clicked over to the one 50 from in the, and it was on a thousand that it it just went click over. Yeah. You dirty motherfucker.
Speaker: Yeah. That's pretty cool. Yeah. You could hit the bankrupt too. So you should be happy. Oh yeah. I've never played that machine. i play, there's one slot. i I don't play it. I don't play slots. I'm just assuming it's wheel fortune. it has a bankrupt probably. Yeah.
Speaker: But yeah, so that was cool. Yeah. Quick swift and all the delays that everybody else had. But then when I got back to the airport, my car battery was dead. I got a text message from somebody cause we have GPS and they can monitor all the fucking vitals in your car.
Speaker: and he's like, yeah, dude, your your battery's down to like 9 volts. It's probably not going to start. I'm like, well, shit. This is the company car? Yeah. Luckily, the good folks at the ah Sacramento airport have a ah ah security team that'll come and jump your car. So it only cost me like 20 minutes.
Speaker: It wasn't the end of the world. That's good. Yeah. That's really good. Yeah. um I have...
Speaker: Uh, yeah, let's do some maker spotlight. All right. Who do you Who do you got? No, I'm going to go. I'm going to go F off. Yeah.
Speaker: I'm not ready, but you know, and I think we may have already featured this dude, but he made me laugh this week. Um, uh, I think we have cause it's familiar. Uh, is it?
Speaker: So anyways, I have ah Black Custom Knives, ah Michael Black. and youll Yeah, we have. We have? Yeah, I don't remember.
Speaker: it was a long time ago? Yeah, episode 76. What did he do that's cool that we featured him? I don't know. Did he win like a challenge or something?
Speaker: No.
Speaker: Anyways, ah Michael Black. Black Custom Knives. He's got 399 followers. He's part-time bladesmith since 2014. Marine veteran. ah Sign up for his email newsletter for notifications on when he has knives.
Speaker: Is there anything else? I'm going to click more. Oh, knives available on my website. Yeah. So he actually commented on story recently.
Speaker: uh, the other day and, uh, said, he goes, you know, because of that audio thing that I put on there, he's like, the only thing I'm going to commit to is Jareding a bunch more knives and not finishing them.
Speaker: And I chuckled. So I looked at his stuff and I was like, Oh, dude makes some pretty cool stuff. So wanted to give him a shout out and tell him thanks for making me laugh and appreciate the ah the support and listening to the show. So if you guys are not following him, let's boost that up.
Speaker: Let's get him to 407, 406. If all of our listeners. It's already 400 on my screen. So someone had already followed him.
Speaker: What? Yeah. It says 400 followers. Yeah. I refreshed. It is. Let's get him up to 407 if we can get that new And I was already following so wasn't me. Yeah.
Speaker: Well, cool. He's growing already. They have already heard it even though it hasn't been released. That's right. So. Who do you got? ah My name is Dennis Terrell. I have another Brazilian. is he i do know i This is This is not Brazilian.
Speaker: Actually, I had to look at it if I wasn't sure. I saw the name and I'm like, yeah, that's that's not it. Yeah, um I'd... this guy's got a crazy number, uh, um, of followers, but this is, uh, Borka blades, uh, which is Sebastian Berengi, Berengi, Berengi, um, and holy definitely, um, folder maker, um, but does some awesome stuff. Um,
Speaker: He's the lifestyle, dude. He makes skulls. Yeah. He does a lot with um looks like, which I've never really played with and I probably should, is the um using the laser to do color on stainless, which is pretty cool. and I have the capability to do it. I've just never done it. If you look down...
Speaker: uh even the second row the last knife in the second row that's laser um uh yeah both those knives the first one and the last one in the second row um that's lasered and you get that color from the laser oh that's pretty damn cool yeah it's got a bunch more down if you if you scroll down further um yeah i should play with that some more and do some uh some interesting stuff with the laser but uh yeah yeah he makes some fucking really cool shit yeah does really complex grinds compounded all over this shit yeah you get down to the ones that are like he's got some i don't know a bunch of rows down but they're kind of facing you and they're really pointy and stabby and yeah just like i think he's got a mirror finish just on the blade portion which is pretty cool
Speaker: Um, yeah, those are pretty snazzy. I love the shape of the blades. It's got one that's very, he's even got models. Oh yeah. Yeah.
Speaker: So yeah, cool, cool stuff. Go check him out. Uh, he's 107,000 followers, so he's up there. Um, but yeah, you can always use more. Yeah, his ratio is a little lopsided, though.
Speaker: He's only following 736. That's baller status. Baller status. You know who else has baller status? Not me.
