Intro and Team Overview

00:00:02
Speaker
Every club, every day. The Global Sports Podcast Network. Hello and welcome back to the Daily Southampton and today the Daily Tottenham.
00:00:14
Speaker
ah My name is Greg Illitt and today I'm joined from Chris for from our Spurs counterparts. are doing Chris? Hello mate, not bad, not bad. Really, really good good mood watching Spurs the um the other day and looking forward to the weekend, really am. Yeah.
00:00:29
Speaker
Can you hear it in my voice, mate? im so I sound like a Southampton fan. I can hear

Match Expectations and League Challenges

00:00:33
Speaker
the excitement. We we were discussing in our match preview and a bit before the the ah show came on air that it's it's kind of an unpredictable day coming in and on Sunday, but also predictable in the fact that whatever the outcome, we're probably both going to be pretty disappointed. It's...
00:00:51
Speaker
100% mate, that is true. you you know if you if you pull something out, if if you get a good result, as in you if you play well. ah To be honest, I've watched you quite a bit this season because I've always watched teams who come up and I think some of the play has been good. It's just the standard of players you're playing against, isn't it? I think it is it's a jump level, unfortunately.
00:01:10
Speaker
Yeah, it's been patches and it's been sort of trying to put those patches together to manage a full 90 minutes that's been... most of the problem. but Yeah, like us. but Yeah, you seem to be on a, let's say, a downturn of form at the moment.
00:01:25
Speaker
We're on a trajectory, mate. It's a trajectory, but if you look at it upside down, it's fantastic. but Is, don't know, is this the case of it like being like rock bottom to be beat by, to to to give the team who are currently in position to be the worst team in Premier League history, like the points to not be that, but that that being the points You'll get more points than that, I think.

Promoted Teams' Struggles

00:01:50
Speaker
ah think you' gonna be I think you'll get over... Is it 10, is it?
00:01:53
Speaker
Yeah, 11 was Derby's record, and we right we're up to 10. So there is at least a glimmer of hope now. I think by the end of the day... on any given day, most teams can beat other teams. It's just whether or not the levels drop and it's that's the difference between elites elite elite and good professional players, isn't it really?
00:02:12
Speaker
Especially when you jump from a championship and I'm based in Plymouth so I watch Argalo quite a bit and obviously they've got the other... They're in the same position as you. They just can't compete in in the league because the money, the quality of players, yes, management and tactics and all these other things have been changed. And sometimes you can't be really loose when you haven't got the quality to do anything against those teams. So yeah we watched Spurs, Chelsea.
00:02:37
Speaker
It was, you know, Chelsea are a good team. They are. can bemoan what we did in the match but I mean end of the day they're a good team and every team you play against is good in this league to be honest but I think that yeah we're both going to be relatively disappointed I've just that's just our season like my youngest said to me when we were watching the Spurs Chelsea match I just want it to be over I want the season to be over and I was like I hear you and that's so sad isn't it yeah it is and uh
00:03:09
Speaker
A feeling shared, I think, between our teams, that's for sure.

Tottenham's Inconsistency and Fan Concerns

00:03:12
Speaker
The last time, Saints fans, we saw Spurs, you absolutely smashed us at St Mary's in Russell Martin's last fixture as a manager, ah sort of putting the nail in his coffin.
00:03:25
Speaker
Do you think that that fast start is what we're likely to see on Sunday? Or do you think it's going to be a case of like looking past us to the Europa League, which I guess is the the more important part of the season at this point?
00:03:37
Speaker
Mate, I can't read it. I mean, most Spurs fans just don't know what the hell's you know going to turn up day-to-day, match-to-match. All they know is that they won't agree with some of it, and it'll be disappointing, unfortunately.
00:03:50
Speaker
But, I mean, regards to how we start off, I mean... You would hope they would start off ready to be fast. Again, it depends who who's playing, but the substitutions recently and all these other things going on, and Andrew's lost us the the the away fans now, and and the home fans be different.
00:04:07
Speaker
But that feeling is really there. it's at the back of your throat where you when you when you've had something spicy and you're like, oh, that was all right. And then if the fire heats behind you and the back of the throat stays in there. that's That's the feeling you get at the moment, unfortunately. It's it's there.
00:04:21
Speaker
um So fast start? Yeah, probably. I like to think so. And that's that's the only reason why we can do it Because we kind of, but after that, regardless of who's playing, we kind of drop our performance levels. We really do. And that's the problem.
00:04:34
Speaker
We should be different. We should be another level than some teams, including Southampton, to the be honest. Look on the paper. The team's excellent, Spurs team. Just can't put it together on the pitch.
00:04:45
Speaker
Tactics-wise, yeah. Yeah. that That goes into it. We play a high line and he's not going to change. But just one or two steps back, and but you know that would put the less pressure on it. There's all these little changes which every Spurs fan will bemoan to you. It's frustrating.
00:05:00
Speaker
Have I ranted there? No. That's all right. We love a rant. It's all good. Do you see Ange making it to the end of the season as Spurs manager?

Spurs' Managerial Future: Will He Last?

00:05:10
Speaker
it's It's all or nothing. And to be honest, I think 20% of it is because we've got that final a few matches in Europa. Obviously, on Thursday, we've got the next match.
00:05:23
Speaker
And obviously, Levy's kind of happened when he when he got rid of Mourinho before that cup final and then we lost it. He doesn't want to make that on a mess mistake. But I think the majority of it is that there isn't any else only anybody else better out there now.
00:05:36
Speaker
I think that and he's he's nailed his sail to the mast, if that's the right phrase, and he's stuck with it. But is The word toxic is massively overused in football, but it really does feel like that now. And you've even got the most positive people, and I like to view myself as quite positive, and I always give people a benefit of the doubt, but feeling really negative towards even watching and supporting your team is not great, is it?
00:06:02
Speaker
Yeah, so it's it's not great. but Do you think, with that in mind, if he does make it to the end of the season and wins Europa League, is that enough to get him another season? Or do you think that sort of the nail's in the coffin, the tide has turned, and it'll be change in the summer either way?
00:06:19
Speaker
See you later, I think. um I think the the damage is done, and we're all honing out. We're honing out for the injuries coming back. That was the excuse. Now we're holding out because we're we're doing well in the Europa.
00:06:32
Speaker
But, I mean, the league form is is shocking. You know, regardless if we're only looking on paper one ni at Chelsea, that seems like a good result because we never win at Chelsea. But this it was the performance and just the manner and just the feeling that he doesn't want to, you know...
00:06:50
Speaker
ah cup and I don't know if you saw the the the after aftermath of the Chelsea match. And obviously, the referee, I thought, was quite poor throughout it for both sides, to be honest. There was quite a lot missed. but And VAR, I'm going to take that out of the equation. not going to talk about that.
00:07:03
Speaker
but But just Ange's interaction with the away fans. At the cup end of the year, when Sars scored the goal, which was ultimately ruled out, that did look like a sorry can't hear you 100% look like not a I'm listening to you cheering that was just a company that that was a cop out ah so you know don't do things but you know it's like celebrating for a winner when and the linesman saying I could be offside and VAR is out so it's not great yeah it's it is an interesting i position yeah how are you guys anyway with regards to yeah you you mat your manager and stuff like that
00:07:45
Speaker
Yeah, I think that it's another case of it'll be changing

Southampton's New Direction and Recruitment Issues

00:07:48
Speaker
in the summer. I mean, he's not had a win since coming in. So it's... You've done the stuff, though. You obviously came up, which is which is kudos in the bank, isn't it, surely? And...
00:08:02
Speaker
if If you're going back down, obviously going back to the other the next league down, Championship, but that's a difficult league and he's already got you out of that. so but Well, we've changed Russell Martin. Russell Martin brought us up and of course obviously you guys beating us was the the nail in his coffin for sure. But yeah, we've replaced him with Ivan Juric but I think that...
00:08:23
Speaker
um There's been a lot of acknowledgement from the club that the the football direction has really, and the recruitment in particular, has really let us down this season. Right. We've brought in a new technical director of football.
00:08:38
Speaker
Right. to the group, but based at Southampton. And I think that with that, he's going to want to bring in a manager that's his choice and isn't Juric, to be honest. It makes sense. don't think Juric has done in enough to stake his claim, if honest.
00:08:55
Speaker
The same as you've been saying with the sort of bonkers decision making and crazy substitutions. I mean, for six games, Joe Uribo, who at the point in the season was our top scorer, was being played at centre-back.
00:09:10
Speaker
It just, it boggled the mind. And, you know, we we found a bit of form against Palace and played quite well, but it's the first time we've really played our players in their correct positions, which really goes this really sort of drills home the point of, yeah, that's that's obvious. Why haven't we just done that before? So it'll be interesting.
00:09:36
Speaker
ah One of the sort of interesting points coming into the game was that One of the more successful parts against Crystal Palace was the double pivot that we sort of managed to set up between Flynn Downs and Igachugwu.
00:09:47
Speaker
ah But Flynn Downs picked up a yellow and now is suspended for for the next couple of games. so Isn't that always the way it goes? when you get When you have a bad patch and you have a little bit of, well, that's a glimmer of hope there. These two are playing well together. And then there's a suspension or or something crazy.
00:10:04
Speaker
It's always the way.

00:11:09
Speaker
like you you You guys are going down and to be honest, it's so feasible that we could get caught in the league. But you guys going down, how many players are you going to lose of your squad? I know there's been talk about ah quite a few players going anyway and there was previously, but I mean Kyle Walker-Peters has been linked now as well, hasn't he?
00:11:27
Speaker
Yeah, so yeah, Kyle Walker-Peters is out of contract in the summer, so it's yeah pretty much nailed on that he'll be gone now. I think that the contract's been there for him to sign, but I don't see why he would, and I don't blame him.
00:11:40
Speaker
And he'll go with no sort of ill feeling, certainly from me, Well, it's better for the club as well, isn't Because if they can't get the money they want for him, because they've paid to take the new contract, then he's stuck there on a big wage, isn't he? so That's it, yeah. And, you know, he stuck around for our last relegation and is still consistently one of the best performers for us and always puts a shift in on the pitch. So there'll be no sort ill feeling if he goes and chooses not to stay, which is completely fair enough.
00:12:07
Speaker
To be honest, I wouldn't be surprised if it's a... Big amount of change in the summer. Far south. Yeah, I expect quite a lot of players to go. There are quite a few players in our squad who have already been sort of trying to go for the last couple of windows and just haven't had the right offer come in.
00:12:28
Speaker
It'll be interesting. Obviously, there's there's been a couple of falling outs with the current manager, and it'll be interesting to see what will happen if we check if we expect, as we expect to him to change, what will happen.
00:12:45
Speaker
Flynn Downs, who we only sort of signed permanently this year, was looking for a move in January because of that, but he's optimistic that we've seen the betterest of him come back, and hopefully he'll stay sort We know that he can do it at that level down there, so he's going to be key.
00:13:03
Speaker
think from the perspective of who's going to go it's a hard one to gauge, but from what I would call a success of who is going to stay, if we can keep either one of Tyler Diblin or Matty Fernandez or both, I think it's been a successful window for us. Yeah.
00:13:25
Speaker
As far as the rest, if it all completely changes, um ah don't think anyone's going to be too upset, to be honest, based off how this season's gone. I think Tyler Diblin's one of the players who, yeah, is definitely, I've heard the noise from, but you never know if that's actually legitimate noise, especially, obviously Spurs linked with everybody anyway, when they've been linked with him as well, as has many clubs, but you don't know if it's actually just left put out there because they know that actually this season's not going great and he will be up for a move later on, see see what the feel you know the feel is out there really, so. Yeah, it's a fascinating one. And we've stuck

Potential Player Transfers Due to Relegation

00:13:59
Speaker
quite publicly a £100 million pound price tag on him.
00:14:03
Speaker
And I think it's fair to say that that's optimistic. But I think it sets the benchmark that we're not just going to let him go because we're getting relegated and that we want to keep hold of him.
00:14:16
Speaker
I think from his perspective, a year in the Championship with us would probably do his career in the world of good. But we'll see how it goes. It's an interesting one where he, at the academy level, he left us before and went to Chelsea, ah but only made it for a day there before coming back and signing with us again. say It's the different type of water, isn't it? It just can't, you know, hard and soft water, that's what it is. That's it. But yeah, there's a bit of hope. But yeah, there are there are a few other like key areas of the team that you I'd like to think will stay consistent. Yeah.
00:14:49
Speaker
i've like Taylor Harwood-Bellis, I'd love to stay with us and sort of forge a career ahead with us. but There's a lot of untapped potential in our squad at the moment, I think. and It's it trying to turn that round and make it... keep those players sweet for a year in the Championship when...
00:15:10
Speaker
you know, their their aim is always going to be to play at the top level. say So something came up on my social media um because I was looking at, I think just in general, Southampton and it was a squad and I was like, Christ, was that the squad of Southampton? What a team that was. You know, you only look back at old years and you're like, God, I didn't appreciate it back then. And and so we're exactly the same as Spurs, to be honest. Although,
00:15:33
Speaker
You have to question if we've ever had that sort of complete squad. But this squad here, Forster, Klein, Fonte, Adovireld, Bertrand, Schneidlin, Wanyama, Tadic, Mane, Pelé and Rodriguez. That's a pretty good team, isn't trees Yeah, it's definitely a case of a real golden era and fire sale.
00:15:55
Speaker
Back with a a little unheard of manager back then, known as Pochettino as well. was definitely some good days. That was the season where there was a period of about six games where we kept back-to-back clean sheets, and it really felt like we were never going to concede another goal again.
00:16:11
Speaker
These days, if we can go six minutes without conceding, it's considered a win. So... I don't know what you're talking about, mate. I'm a Spurs fan. ah the The only given is that they're going to score. It's whether or not we can score first and then score another, usually. But um yeah, what a team that was, God.
00:16:29
Speaker
Yeah, definitely. We've had a players come from obviously Southampton. that They're not a feeder club because you're right, they do stand stick stand out for their own players and put but transfer fees to stop them going away, if that makes sense.
00:16:42
Speaker
100 million, yeah, that i mean that's not going to happen. But you know if it gets 65, then great. sixty five then great Yeah, absolutely. I mean, I think I said before they put that price tag on it that whilst obviously the ideal outcome is seeing Tyler stay with us and go on to great things that way, if anyone comes in and offers in the range of 50 plus, you'd be stupid to turn it down for for an 18-year-old who, you know, anything can happen.
00:17:10
Speaker
Yeah, like likewise for us. I mean, if we don't win Europa, then we're not in Europe next year. And the the young players, which we've got, you know, a few of them now, and we want to attract more, ah like Tyler Dibling, perhaps, then, you know, I would look at other teams who are in Europe because you've got more chance of playing at a higher level. So difficult, difficult was for us to to recruit, I think, especially with...
00:17:35
Speaker
We've got a kind of a bad rep, I think, and even with but managers as well. you know it's It's like a poison chalice, it really, is and it all comes down to Levy, but you know that's another another a totally different conversation. But at the end of the day, it does come the bug does stop on it starts at the top and and sort fills all the way down, and that's what's happened with Spurs.

Spurs' Focus on Morale and Match Wins

00:17:55
Speaker
Sad times. How do you see it playing out for the rest of the season with you guys? Like... Obviously, the Europa League is now like the main key, but is does that mean that you're not going to see a lot in the Premier League? Is there still going to be is it like on the beach time?
00:18:10
Speaker
No, well, the there were elements last... I mean, the the problem we've got is that we're massively overplaying it everywhere. And when we get it into forward positions, which... you know didn the defence overplays because it always starts really deep.
00:18:28
Speaker
The midfield is kind of okay because it's it's driving forward and it's sometimes missed. When it gets onto the wings and everywhere else, again, it's overplayed. never comes to a striker and deb and then there's lots of chat about having a go at Solanke and I feel really sorry for the lad because ultimately, you know, he's not Kane.
00:18:45
Speaker
Number one. Number two, he's not given the service at all. He does he does a number free he does hell of a lot of work for for the team and and really tries to put himself around. But if you're not getting the ball past you and it's overplayed everywhere else, how the hell are is supposed to get these opportunities to score?
00:19:00
Speaker
So that's not happening for him. So yeah, you know, if you stop doing that and actually have more, ifff but it comes down to the manager and his tactics. course it does. And it's made very good players look very average.
00:19:14
Speaker
now, which is not great. So we're going for the rest league, back to your original question before rant about something else. so I think that we have to get some more results on it because that you know you win, that's great for just morale anyway, going to another match in Europe. We can't just...
00:19:30
Speaker
things are connected still, not totally separate. And, you know, a good feeling around the around the dressing room. When the chips are down, you know, you've got to go there and do it. So, hopefully, we're going to get a few more good results in the Premier League. It's not all beach time because...
00:19:46
Speaker
Like I said, I'm pretty sure if Ipswich win every match then we and we lose every match, then we're in trouble. but That's not going to happen. but you know why why bother Why bother just putting your feet up?
00:20:00
Speaker
they should They should be playing for the places for Europe. Yeah, that's it, I suppose. And it's hard to see getting to those lofty heights of winning every game and sort of putting yourself back in that mix. But I guess technically speaking, it's not mathematically impossible to back to the quarter team. No, mate, we're not going to get that at all. I mean, 12th, 13th, yeah, that's where we're going to be, I think, because there's better teams above us and there's more consistent teams above us with clearer game plans and better teams.
00:20:29
Speaker
Well, yeah, I'll say it, better managers, to be fair. um Yeah, so I'm now resigned to, but as most of those fans are, it's when, not if.
00:20:40
Speaker
Yeah, okey-doke. ah So I'm going to go back and go to some score predictions, but first, a message from our partners at Zencastr.

00:21:16
Speaker
I rather boldly on our crossover on our preview episode yesterday, but which admittedly was filmed before the the Chelsea game last night, predicted that with some perhaps some vengeance for our absolute battering at home,
00:21:34
Speaker
that we would win 3-0 away from home on Sunday, which which is definitely bold, but I stand by it in at least the optimistic sense. How ah how do you see the game going?
00:21:47
Speaker
No, mate, not like that. I think that I've done it many times, and you always back your team. I like that, which is which is you know the key thing. But I think that it will be <unk> be either...
00:22:00
Speaker
relatively close but and we'll we'll you'll you'll have chances but not take them so it might be 2-0 something like that for us i don't think it would be a runaway because i don't think we're in that kind of mindset and i'd be a little bit annoyed if we do run away with it because it makes it just again papers over cracks and it'll be more because it's going to be open it's open because that's the way we both sort of play especially us at the moment but you know having the players back arguably are one of our strongest lineups when we played against Chelsea.
00:22:33
Speaker
Did it look, was I confident in in in beating Chelsea? Not really, but um but that was more to do with the fact that just the tactics. So again, Chelsea are a good team, you know, you put Chelsea versus Southampton, what have you done against them?
00:22:50
Speaker
Not well, but that goes for just about everybody else who played this season too. so Yeah, their transition in particular is is was a level up from ours and we were just, you know, they were just making themselves accessible for and and simple balls, doing two or three passes rather than six or seven.
00:23:07
Speaker
So that's the difference. They're a lot more clinical, especially when they get forward and don and aren't scared of putting in the the sliding balls through you as well. And Copalma... on On occasions, was looking pretty tasty again last night, to be fair.
00:23:20
Speaker
yes Yeah, so we'll we'll we'll see. reckon it might be 2-0, something like that. Okay. I don't think it's unreasonable to think that that's the way it's going to go.
00:23:31
Speaker
ah you're You're not a bad team. And as we're not a bad team, it's just that we haven't been able to put it together together at all. That's yeah As mentioned, definitely a game of trying to predict the unpredictable...
00:23:44
Speaker
very much depends on which version of which team shows up. Because to be honest, ah even a on the back of a solid performance against Palace, every time we've got excited on the back of a solid performance, we've absolutely capitulated in the next game. So...
00:23:59
Speaker
Really could go

Match Predictions and Team Morale

00:24:00
Speaker
either way. Yeah. Like I said, I don't want you to capitulate because I want you to, you know, you just, the way you've played and and and fronted up, you haven't capitulated. I know you the your view points to it is not great, but it's not as if you come in and and not been in some occasions. You've had opportunities in matches, the ones I've seen in anyway.

So I'd like to think that, you know, you won't capitulate. It would just, you know, but I do see us winning probably two goals. Yeah. I've set a clean sheet there, by the way, but that's not necessarily what's going to the case as well, because we we have a tendency to be able to score own goals or some stupid deflection or miscarriage. It's crazy. so That sounds right up Tallpool Street, to be fair. He's he's got two in two now, so he's on goal-scoring fire, taking himself to the top of our goal-scoring list for the season wow her with a grand total and a four. so
00:24:49
Speaker
ah whip whi we're not much better mate to be fair but team wise I think he'll play the same team as he started against Chelsea so you don't see much rest in lining up for the midweek game against Frankfurt well I think he might make a decision earlier than usual he's a 60 minute man so he'll maybe make a decision at half time maybe I'd like to see Archer Gray play um I'd like to see Bergvau... In fact, I'd like to see Bergvau not taken off against Chelsea, and that was a really stupid decision, if you ask me.
00:25:25

But yeah, I think um personally, I'd like to see Son rested. If he's going play, we we will play his captain in the Europa on Thursday. So maybe maybe change that and put Odebert on the left.
00:25:40
Speaker
Sorry, Odebert on the right, as he was, and Tell on the left. And then, yeah, we can mix up a little bit in midfield. um But striker-wise, that's pretty much it. Solanke's going to have to play. Yeah. that's it that's it Although we could do we could do what some of the other teams have done in the Premier League and put a centre-back up front on my work.
00:26:05
Speaker
We saw a cameo a couple of games ago with Jack Stephens trying his luck up front. and that Jack Stephens, tall point boy. Yeah, he's ah he's a South East Cornwall boy. That's it. He's been from tall point where I used to grow up. so Yeah, he's he's done well, hasn't really?
00:26:21
Speaker
Just lacks a bit of pace, doesn't he? Yeah, or a bit of composure. He's had a couple of questionable moments this season with a couple of red cards and then some unfortunate injuries to follow up. so But hopefully for the run-in, back to his best. He certainly seemed it on Tuesday. So hopefully we'll come in sort slightly unchanged as well. Like I say, we've got Flynn Downs out. but Hopefully we'll see someone almost like for like slot into that, maybe a rebuild or someone sort slotting in and the rest of the team hopefully firing on all cylinders. That's what we can hope.
00:26:57
Speaker
so Fantastic. um And just regards to next season, if if you do go down, obviously, you see yourself bouncing back straight?

Southampton's Relegation Recovery Plans

00:27:06
Speaker
Difficult, but I think you should have enough...
00:27:09
Speaker
Yeah, I'm hoping that we've got enough to do it. Whether I want to yo-yo and then have another season of misery straight after, I don't know. but Yeah, I think we should have enough to to be right up amongst it.
00:27:23
Speaker
It's a dangerous precedent set for my yeah youngsters who have season tickets with me, though, that we can expect to doubt at Wembley every other year. So, I don't know. We'll see how it goes. But yeah, I think we should be all right.
00:27:37
Speaker
but it'll be an interesting one some interesting away days next season though potentially Wrexham and Portsmouth to deal with so that will be interesting especially Wrexham that's it it'll be interesting of ah their journey I think you know we love to see a success story but you when's it gonna when's gonna end who knows yeah we also like to be the teams that see the end of that success story so it's a fun balance to strike in nice that's it Well, that is just about all we've got time
