Introduction and Episode Info

00:00:00
Speaker
We are drinking Dragon's Milk White, an urban barrel aged white stout. What is this, a founder's beer? Oh! Sorry. Let's do a holop. Yeah. This week we're drinking random beers from the great state of Michigan. This is episode 138 of The Malting Hour.
00:00:18
Speaker
What's the haps on the house? Guy, ease that speech This the moat now where we talk about our drink And tell you what we think, every other week And if we get drunk, well we might slur our speech Gotta get a cab, the friends who wish you had Join us for a drink, join us for a laugh Time is never wasted, way you're getting wasted The moat and I will hear people, people taking places

Welcome and Banter

00:00:44
Speaker
Welcome to The Malting Hour. I am one of your hosts, Tony, going to join Always With. Brandon Winning Church. What's up, Brandon? Not much, man. What's up with you? Nothing much. I can't speak, apparently. Yeah, well, it's Monday. Monday. We're not used to doing this on Mondays. We're not normally recording the episode we're about to post the same day. But here we are. Look at us go. Winners. Winners. Winners in life. Welcome back, by the way, from your trip. Thank you. How was it? It was good. It was long. It was nice to be home.

Brandon's Hectic Day

00:01:12
Speaker
It was nice to be home until you were like, oh no, we have to record. No, then I was, well, and I had work today. So I was like, but back to reality. Yeah, luckily it wasn't too crazy today. I stupidly planned like a four hour training with my team this afternoon, basically taking up the whole afternoon. And then I was like, three hours sounds better. So I made it a three hour training. And then I was like, our team meetings an hour. I'm like, half an hour sounds better. But I did that too, because I didn't want to have my team on the phone all day.
00:01:41
Speaker
But it worked out. So it wasn't a crazy day. We forgot this morning. We didn't forget. It was on the calendar. But it was like 7.30 in the morning and a notice came up on my phone and it said, Aggie shit. And I was like, what the fuck is Aggie shit? Make sure the cat poops. And I was like, Becca, does Aggie have a shot this morning? And she's like, oh my god, yes.
00:02:02
Speaker
So we frantically get up. Benjamin had crawled into bed with us last night, so he was in the middle. I was like, all right, what's going to be easier for you? Do you want me to do him? Get him ready and take him to school, or you want me to grab Aggie and just go out the door? I was like, because I was already getting dressed. I already had clothes on. She's like, grab Aggie and go. So I rushed her over there. We got there in time just to find out that the vet screwed up and somehow deleted our appointment. But apparently, that happened to several people that had E30 appointments. They all got deleted from their system. And they were like, don't worry, we'll get you in.
00:02:32
Speaker
Waited like five minutes and they came and he's like, it's just a shot. It should be quick. So it was it was nice and easy But yeah, well, that's good jump start to the morning. Yeah, what a way to Yeah, exactly. What a way to start the the week. Yeah, right. Yeah my Manager was off Thursday and Friday so it was kind of like a
00:02:57
Speaker
It's, you know, it's, when I'm boss, I would say it's a little more laid back. No offense to my boss. Uh, we still get everything done, but you know, there's, and plus it's the end of the week. And one thing it comes to the end of the week, it starts slowing down a bit more. So it felt like, you know, we got out a little early on Friday cause I like to cut us out early when nothing's going on. Cause why would we stay? Uh, so it feels like I had like a little bit of a longer weekend. So today it was like,
00:03:23
Speaker
back to normal for me as well. It wasn't bad, but also, it started off really nice out today, and then rained all day, and now it's kind of like feeling a little bit like summer. Feeling like summer day. And what better way to enjoy summer than with a

Neighborly Beer Gifts

00:03:42
Speaker
stout? And today, tonight, we are sampling some random Michigan beers. That's the title of this episode. Random Michigan beers. Just so happens.
00:03:52
Speaker
A neighbor of mine from across the street saw me outside one day and asked me if I wanted two beers, and I said sure, and she said they were both from Michigan, so I grabbed them, and it was very kind of her. Thank you, Lissa. I appreciate that.
00:04:07
Speaker
We're going to try them. It's nice to have neighbors like that. Yeah, she's a stout and porter drinker, if I'm not mistaken. So that's what we have. We're going to start off here with...

Review of Devil Dog Oatmeal Stout

00:04:19
Speaker
I should have this in front of me. Roke brewing, devil dog, oatmeal stout. And I was prepared and pulled this up on my phone. What do you... How do you feel about... Oh, crud. I had it on my phone. Hold on.
00:04:31
Speaker
Here it is. From Roke Brewing Company. Devil Dog oatmeal stout. Devil Dog is a smooth, velvety, and bold oatmeal stout. Chocolate malts and rolled oats bring out nutty chocolate and roasted coffee characteristics. The beer is near and dear to Roke as a portion of every drop sold is donated to local VA hospital in Detroit. That's cool, yeah. I'm learning that now. That's awesome. 8.3%. 45 IBUs available year-round. So Roke Brewing.
00:05:00
Speaker
I thought I knew where they were located. Let me kind of hit it in front of me. I don't know where they're located. I'm going to look it up. Brandon, what do you think of this beer? I like it. It definitely has that oatmeal. Hi, Becca. Has that oatmeal stout profile to it. Body's really, really thin. I'm getting like notes of chocolate.
00:05:28
Speaker
What else is that I get I'm getting coffee yeah like watered-down Like it's not it's not overpowering it's like it's there it's present, but it's not strong. It's not a strong to me. It's not yeah. It's not like drinking
00:05:47
Speaker
a cup of coffee. No. It's Marshall, Michigan, by the way. Marshall, Michigan. Okay. That's where they're located. I've never heard of them until this beer, so. Yeah. I agree. When I was pouring it, I was like, man, this looks like, it definitely looks like Coca-Cola. Yeah. And I had to shake it off. I had to Taylor Swift this, because I was getting some of that
00:06:10
Speaker
tinny metallica that I'm very sensitive to when it comes to certain roasted malts. And it's gone now. So I was very happy that it was an easy one. It wasn't so much in my face, which I was very happy about. The watered down coffee. I don't want to say that in a bad way. Yeah, that's what I was going to say. I was just about to say, I know you don't mean that negatively. I guess the better way would be a weak coffee. A lighter coffee. I will say.
00:06:40
Speaker
It does not drink like it's almost 9% alcohol. I didn't know that. Yeah, I think it said 8.5 or 8.4. This is drinking like a 4% stout. It's very tasty. You know what, this is one, I think it might be better warmed up a little bit, which is pretty ice cold. I pulled it out of my fridge and brought it over here. I think it's, you know, with it being an oatmeal stout, I expect a little bit more body. Like that's what I'm missing from this, not having,
00:07:11
Speaker
that like, it doesn't do like full body, like thick like motor oil, but this is pretty thin, you know, it's a thin, it's a thin beer. And the flavor profile is there of what I would expect from an oatmeal stout, but I'm right with you with the body, it's just so super light, which blows my mind that it's eight and a half percent. And it's that light and it's, ow! Yeah, I mean it's, the roastiness
00:07:40
Speaker
Roastiness kind of reminds me of Guinness. Not the bitterness, but there's the roastiness. There's the bitterness in Guinness that works with the roastiness. I feel like this has a roastiness that reminds me of Guinness. Not to say that beer reminds me of Guinness, but it's the stout that pops into my head. No, I get it. I get it. I'm with you.
00:07:56
Speaker
I feel like Guinness has that coffee-esque flavor to it. Guinness, believe it or not, is a lighter, thinner beer. Actually, there's more body in Guinness than there is in this beer. Yeah, it just boggles my mind. I remember when I first started drinking in general, one of the first times I had a Guinness, I think,
00:08:19
Speaker
I may have been at our old friend Kat's house and she's a big Guinness and Jameson girl. I think she might be part Irish or something. Yes, just part. Anyway, so like she gave me one and I remember I thought it was the most disgusting thing I ever had in my life. I was like, this is gross. What is this?
00:08:41
Speaker
And then not long after I had, I think I had a pint of it somewhere and I was like, okay, that's better. I'm like, so she may have just had some skunk Guinness like in her house. I don't know. I mean, she wasn't 21, so who knows? It was hidden under her bed for a month. Drink this. I keep it under my pillow. In case I get thirsty at night. She doesn't say that. Like most Irish people do. Just joking, just joking. She might know, she has kids, who knows.
00:09:09
Speaker
But yeah, so I went back to it I was like this is a fantastic beer and I've loved Guinness ever since It's an easy drinking stout and this one is too but like again just how thin it is this is dangerous being this thin and being like eight and a half percent like if I didn't know that like I I'm not saying that I went through this super quick, but I went through this quicker if it was a little more you want something? If it was a little thicker
00:09:33
Speaker
Let's both walk away from the mic. Yeah. That's what you do on a podcast. We've been doing this for five years. Super professional. I'm trying to think of what, what stout this reminds me of. And I can't put my finger on it. It does not, because it's not Guinness. I mean, it does, but it's not like, oh, this reminds me of Guinness, because it's not an Irish stout. No, it's not. Yeah, I feel like, flavor-wise, I feel like I've had something very, very close to this.
00:10:01
Speaker
Yeah. I can't remember. Does founders do an oatmeal stout? Yes. Which one I don't know. Is fat pug an oatmeal stout? Yes. That's what I'm thinking of. That's what it reminds me of.
00:10:16
Speaker
not like specifically like 100% yeah it is an oatmeal stout but see fat pugs and oatmeal milk stout and that's only six percent alcohol. Interesting. That's maple wood. What are you doing guys brewing this beer? How about you guys making this? What's your secret? Yeah uh that's interesting. I think I would if I saw this in the store in Michigan I'd
00:10:41
Speaker
I think I'd pick it up again. Yeah. All right. Not again, but I think I think I would pick it up or I'd like to go and try like go to the brewery. Oh yeah. That would be, you know, I'm trying to think what else is in this dark horse. I think dark horse might be in a Marshall as well.
00:10:57
Speaker
That's my M&M reference for the show. Really? I know. Everyone's keeping track on that, too. Yeah, and there's no date on this. I'm not sure how old this beer is. But it's year round, so I can't imagine that it's super old. The confirmed dark horse is in Marshall, Michigan, isn't it? Oh, thank you. Thank you. Made a brief comment. It was talking about founders oatmeal stout, just because we're on the Michigan talk. Did you see the article that founders is reopening their Detroit location again? Oh, really? They're going to give it another go, apparently.
00:11:26
Speaker
Founders Detroit now with less black people Burn got you fuckers. Oh Boy what a shit show they have have been for a little bit now. Yeah, I mean, I don't know how that's gonna work for them But you know what? I'll say give it a go. See what happens. Good luck losers Um, I mean you still have some old founders beers. I should probably drink though sometime. I do. I think my uncle My uncle knows that I like craft beer. So he tries he goes to I don't know if he goes to Benny's or what liquor store he goes He lives up in Wilmette
00:11:56
Speaker
But he always goes on Christmas Eve when they come over he goes to the liquor store He tells a guy like look I don't drink like what's what's a good craft beer these days or whatever and like they'll just give them a four-pack or a six-pack He's like, okay, he buys it for me. He's like, hey Merry Christmas. Hey, you gotta love the effort I forgot what he got me but the thought that counts man, but yeah, so I haven't gotten into that because I just have this like
00:12:20
Speaker
This tastes for founders most of the time. But when I run out of beer, that's gonna be the one I gotta, if I ever run out of beer. But it's also like beers, it's like, you know, when people come over, it's like, you want some, here you go. You can have. It's a good beer to offer up to people. Yeah. People who hate other people. Hey, you look racist. Do you want a founder's beer? Zing, got him again, we're on a hot streak with Michigan baby. Specifically, founders, we're looking at you.
00:12:49
Speaker
Brandon, out of five pitchforks, because this is called Devil Dog. Okay, I'm with you. How many pitchforks you giving this beer, baby? Go three and a half. Three and a half. Yeah, I'm with you on that. Three and a half. Solid beer. Not knocking my socks off. Yeah.
00:13:07
Speaker
I will say that, you know what, I'm gonna go three, seven. That's what I was about to say actually. Well that's what I was about to say that maybe I'm being a little too harsh because I am impressed that
00:13:19
Speaker
it is that high in ABV and it's that easy to drink. It's very, very smooth and easy to drink. Yeah, I mean, I'd be curious to know how accurate that is. Let's send it, get tested. Let's send it to the revolution. Send the revolution. Send it to the lab. Send it to the lab, we'll get it tested and find out what the actual ABV is. I mean, I assume it's probably pretty. We get a bill for $500. Nevermind, we don't want that info. Keep it to yourselves.
00:13:50
Speaker
We don't care that much. Yeah, this is pretty good. Yeah, so I think 8.6. Okay. 8.6. Maybe the beer is already kicking in. 3.6. I give it 8.6. The highest rating I've ever given a beer. It's this one. Way to go, Roke Brewing. Yeah, 3.6, 3.7. Okay. Somewhere around there. Not bad. If I saw it again, or if I saw it out in the wild, I'd probably try it.
00:14:16
Speaker
I would definitely like that if I was ever up that way I would stop at the tap room and if they had this on tap I would love to try it on tap. Yeah I would say it's also a good first impression beer. Yeah well because we also don't know we don't know how fresh this is so I mean I'm not saying that it's bad either way like you know but if fresher it's a little better like that would up my score for it you know.
00:14:36
Speaker
Yeah, maybe that has a, watch, this is like a super fresh can. Yeah. Well, we never know, you know? Yeah. You never know. You never, never know. Just based on, you know, that's what all this, all of our tastings are. It's based on this moment right here, right now. Brandon, we're gonna try our new format today. We're gonna pause for one of those commercials you're gonna drop in right here. Ooh. We'll be right back.
00:15:47
Speaker
And we're back. As soon as you asked me, are we going to do that? Should I just do that? I was like, yeah, just do it. I was like, maybe we should do it. We are back. Welcome back from that ad. We're going to figure this out. We're doing the Michigan beers.

Tasting Salted Caramel Porter

00:16:05
Speaker
And our next one that was given to us is from Pigeon Hill Brewing Company up in Muskegon, Michigan. This is SCP.
00:16:17
Speaker
Salted caramel porter. Not to be confused with ICP. What we saw last year. Island caramel porter. Well, you know, I was kind of excited because I thought this was the Imperial version. Sorry, I probably could have just, yeah, I should just pour it for you. I thought it was the Imperial version when I first pulled this up on Untabbed, because that's all I saw. There you go.
00:16:41
Speaker
I had more of the other one. I'm going to like this one more. It is not. This is just the 6.0. What is wrong with my brain today? 6% ABV beer. I thought we were going to have another 8.5% beer. So I'm very interested to see how this one is. I love quarters. I love salted caramel. The idea of a salted caramel porter.
00:17:03
Speaker
Sounds interesting in theory. I haven't gone in for a whiff or a taste yet. Looks like you have maybe done both or just a whiff. No, just not getting much. I'm getting Porter. Yeah. Porter on the nose. Although, caramel, caramel. Caramel. Fuck. Caramel. What are you going to smell? I mean, caramel smells like caramel, but I don't know how you get that in a beer. Mm. There's a saltiness. Yeah. What is that?
00:17:30
Speaker
It tastes like fucking star anise. Like not licorice, but like holiday magic. I wouldn't say magic. Oh, what is that? I don't know. Is there a date on that can? No. Oh, boy. I, uh.
00:17:57
Speaker
man i hate to okay so this is based on this can yeah this can could be old yeah maybe i'll get some more information see if uh this can is old uh you know before before we get our first impressions let me let me read what their description is i think we did first yeah kind of um wow there's no so there's no description um untapped we're
00:18:21
Speaker
Yeah, because the only thing that I found was the Imperial version. I'm trying to find their website. There we go. Pigeon Hill Brewing Company. Where is their website? Did they not have a website? What kind of business do they have a website? Sorry, everybody. I thought I was more prepared. Also, if you look up Pigeon Hill, it just shows you a bunch of pictures of pigeons.
00:18:42
Speaker
The brewery, the brewery's alone, the pigeon. Okay, I guess there's two locations. Looks like they're celebrating 10 years, so. Oh, I remember why I closed there about us. It's fucking long as hell. All right, let me check their beer. Just, wow, this is embarrassing. I'm gonna embarrass you, Barry. Beach, please. They do have a beer called Beach, Please. That's funny.
00:19:11
Speaker
I don't think this is currently on tap, so I don't think we'll get OCP. I wonder what that, oh, Oreo. Oreo cream porter. SCP, here we go. Salted caramel porter. What starts as traditional porter takes a turn once caramel and salt are added to this brew. The use of chocolate malt even gives it flavors of chocolate that reminds you of a piece of candy. Hmm, okay. That, I'm not getting. I am getting some type of weird
00:19:40
Speaker
Geez I Don't know I don't know what I'm getting I'm getting bad holiday beer vibes. Yeah, there's like a weird spice It's like a spice. There's something like astringent in the back. Yeah, something's not right here. Oh
00:20:00
Speaker
Something is not right with this, and maybe it is an old can, but I don't think it's that old. Now, depending on where she got it, maybe she didn't get it from the brewery, maybe she got it from someplace old. I don't know, I don't know. It's disappointing, because I know you were looking forward to this. Yeah, I'm looking at, I think it's gotta be this can, no reviews. I mean, it's pretty highly rated.
00:20:23
Speaker
on Untapped, so I'm gonna give it a five. I'm getting fours, 4.25, 3.75, four, four and a half. And this is just the regular, it's not the Imperial one, so. I don't know, unless we're missing something, I think, I think we maybe got a bad can.
00:20:43
Speaker
Womp womp. Which is a bummer. Because unfortunately, that's the one we're reviewing. There's no real way to change it. This is where we're at. Well, it's funny because the reviews say caramel smooth, sweet, salty, and light bodied. And I got something salty in the beginning. Yeah. Got something salty. Hey, whoa. There is a saltiness to it, a slight saltiness. Yeah, but that's it. And then that astringent,
00:21:12
Speaker
overspiced something. Oh, God. I can't. Yeah, it tastes like if Heineken tried to do a porter and put it in green bottles. Yeah. It's like someone took Heineken and mixed it with a porter.
00:21:29
Speaker
It's a good, it's a good analogy actually. Like my face is stuck like this at the moment. Yeah. And if anybody knows me, if I make this face, I'm not, I'm not digging something. I feel like maybe it's going to be unfair to rate this. Yeah. Agreed. Uh, I'm not going to, we gave our impressions, not going to rate this. Uh, it's like someone took Heineken and mixed it with a porter.
00:21:49
Speaker
It's a good analogy, actually. My face is stuck like this at the moment. If anybody knows me, if I make this face, I'm not digging something. I feel like maybe it's going to be unfair to rate this. Yeah, agreed. We gave our impressions. Not going to rate this.
00:22:07
Speaker
Unfortunately, I was really excited. I love porters and salty caramel sounds so good. Yeah, this would have, I feel like a beer like this would have been in my cue zone and I would have really enjoyed it. But unfortunately, I think we got a bummer of a can here, man.
00:22:26
Speaker
Well that kind of throws me off the whole like new format of doing 20 minutes, 20 minutes, 20 minutes on the show. I don't think we need to spend 20 more minutes talking about this beer. Indeed. Do you have that other beer we were talking about ready to go? I do. Alright. You want me to go grab it?

Revisiting Dragon's Milk White

00:22:42
Speaker
I'll get it. Okay. While Brandon gets that, anybody here locally or plan on
00:22:47
Speaker
Coming to the Chicagoland area, just want to let you know that the Illinois Craft Beer Guild is bringing back Friday Night Flights this year. And it's starting off at the Gallagher Way, which is right there at Wrigley Field on June 7th with two sessions, one at five, one at eight. If I'm not mistaken, tickets are $35. If we were wrong about that, we're going to start posting information about that in this episode. We are going to be there. I think we just scared the shit out of me.
00:23:16
Speaker
We're gonna be there. I think we're gonna be there at the later session Because we are rebels and we're gonna stay out and stay up a little later because summer in Chicago You guys have gone. It's great a bunch of breweries It's a beer tasting thing and right there Gallagher way if you haven't been to really feel lately Gallagher way is right outside on Clark It's pretty cool. I actually like to hang out there if I go to a Cubs game when I'm given a free ticket I tend to find myself out there more than in my seat unless I'm with
00:23:44
Speaker
My buddy Dan who I enjoy going to baseball games with because he he's a big fan and I don't really care about baseball But it's exciting to go to a game with an actual fan Yeah, so we'll have some information about that. We'll be posting You know regularly so you should come and join us grab a ticket. Like I said, we'll be at the 8 o'clock
00:24:05
Speaker
session, which, you know, that's where all the cool kids are gonna be, you know, late night to Friday, and then we can go hang out in Wrigleyville, make some bad decisions, maybe pick a fight with some frat kids, you know, all that good stuff. Don't, actually, we're not gonna do that last part, probably, maybe, I don't know.
00:24:23
Speaker
We're going to decide. I did a really good job of filling in time right there while you were doing. Good job. Thanks, man. That was all just straight off the top of my dome here. Nice. What are we drinking, Brandon? We are drinking Dragon's Milk White. The Urban Barrel Aged White Stout. What is this, a founder's beer? Oh! Sorry. We are drinking Dragon's Milk White. The Urban Barrel Aged White Stout. What is this, a founder's beer? Oh! Sorry. Let's do a Holland. Yeah.
00:24:52
Speaker
And this one is older. Bottled or canned, eight, nine, 20, 21. We got three years on this one, huh? Yeah. Well, here's the amazing thing. I took a sip. Okay. Never had this before. I don't know if I'm getting stout, but I'm getting tasty beer.
00:25:14
Speaker
Yeah, I always have, like, white stouts always are like, there's a fine line between what's a stout and what's not. Yeah. And the white stout is always like, eh, why are we doing this? I feel like it's more of a gimmick, name type thing. But comparatively to, like, regular dragon's milk, dragon's milk is a little higher in ABV. This one's only 6%. Is this barrel age? It is. It is barrel age. Yeah. Interesting.
00:25:38
Speaker
Yeah, that's pretty good for a beer. You know what? That makes me more interested in this beer. Yeah, I mean for a 6% barrel aged beer. Yeah, it kind of comes off without like the canned corn type of flavor and aroma. Like a cream ale or a blonde ale without the bitterness. Yeah. Does that make sense? Yeah. Visually it looks like a hazy IPA a little bit or like an orangish hue to it. Definitely low IBUs to it because it's a stout.
00:26:03
Speaker
Or I should say is it a this it's just a Regular stout right really white stuff. I'm thinking I've used me home. Yeah, it just says bourbon barely white stuff I shouldn't say that about the abuse
00:26:16
Speaker
15 IBUs. So the untapped description is Dragon's Milk White Stout is a nod to New Holland Brewing's 20th anniversary, 20 years of barrel aging, expertise and commitment to innovation in the name of flavor. The next legend to unfold in the Dragon's Milk family, Dragon's Milk White creates a full flavored yet lighter stout drinking experience that presents familiar flavors in a completely unexpected way.
00:26:40
Speaker
Would've been nice to have this with dragon's milk. But I can tell you right now, this is nothing like dragon's milk. I don't get anything like stout. I don't get any stout vibes from this. No. And I mean, again, that could be because it's a three year old beer. Sure. But it's also got some of that, I'm getting a little bit of like oakiness, kind of very, very subtle. Yeah. Yeah. There is like this,

Speaker
I don't know, like there's like this little bit of sweetness to this that I find pleasant and enjoyable. Yeah. I do like this. Now I want to get a fresh one. Yeah, agreed. And I don't even think I got into this when it was fresh because I remember like I think
00:27:25
Speaker
It had to be Christmas or like January of 2022 when my in-laws were in town, my father-in-law had bought this case and then left it here. And then I put it with all the other beer and I was like, Oh, I'll give it to him. I've seen this a hundred times. And it's been there ever since. That's why when I was talking, when we were talking about doing this episode, I'm like, you've got that new Holland's and dragon smoke, right? I didn't know if you saw the dragon smoke left, though we've already had that, I think on the show. Yeah. Um, the oatmeal cookie, I think is what we did. Yeah. Uh, but I do know that you had this and I wanted to try it this entire time, but.
00:27:55
Speaker
I never got around to being like, hey, let's have this. Let's try this one. You've always had it when you're here. No, I know. Exactly. Well, that's the same thing. I never went for it. I saw it, so I knew it was there. Yeah, I like this. I do like this. Yeah, I like it enough to wear. I would definitely seek this out fresh. According to their website, it is a year-round beer now.
00:28:20
Speaker
Well, now I know what our next mission is. Our next mission is to get these beers fresh. I do need to, I do need to take a trip up to Michigan this summer. Maybe I'll, I have no idea where, and I know, I don't know how far Muskegon, Michigan is from us. Let's see. Yeah, interesting. Because Pigeon Hill, I just feel bad. I feel bad that maybe we got a bad can. I feel like we didn't give you a, we can't give you a fair shake, you know what I mean? It's about three hours from us, Muskegon.
00:28:49
Speaker
Um, I could do that. It's just north of Grand Haven. I don't know what that is, but yeah. Outside of Grand, not far outside of Grand Rapids either. Okay, there's a Muskegon Heights as well. Yeah, that's not that far. Alright, so yeah, maybe I can make a trip like that and see if I can stop in there and
00:29:10
Speaker
Get some redemption. Yeah, get some fresh. I'll even tell them. I'll go out there and be like, hi. I do a podcast with my friend. I did not like this when I... Your beer tasted like Heineken made it.
00:29:21
Speaker
Let that sink in. Yeah, I really do think that's just an old beer. But this dragon's milk is good. I have yet to. I've only had one dragon's milk beer that I didn't like, and it was their rum barrel aged dragon's milk. Really? Yeah, I didn't like that one. You don't like rum, do you? I don't dislike it. I don't really seek it out. I don't know. I don't think I've had a good rum drink. Yeah.
00:29:46
Speaker
What's a good rum cocktail? Mojitos? Oh, fuck, I like Mojitos. So I like Mojitos. I feel like that. And you know about Mojitos now with your tasting that you did. They did an Irish Mojito, too. What did that, was there's four leaf clovers in it? No. Instead of mint? Yeah.
00:30:01
Speaker
uh they ground the leprechaun i feel like they muddled the leprechaun i feel like i need to apologize there's a second knock on the irish i've done today i'm not sure i hear i'm talking shit about founders being racist and i'm just kicking the irish under the bus there yeah i apologize no it was it's it's the simplest thing it was literally jameson and ginger ale
00:30:21
Speaker
with a lime and a mint. They made it just like a mojito, but instead of using rum and club soda, they used Jameson and ginger ale. I mean, whiskey and ginger ale is fantastic. Now you're throwing in lime and mint. Interesting. When we were at the tasting, I messaged my sister, who was on the cruise with us, and she was drinking Jameson and ginger ale the whole time, and I was like,
00:30:44
Speaker
They made an Irish mojito and she was like, she was beside herself. She's like, I would have loved that. I'm like, ask for one somewhere. I was, I don't know why, but I had something in my, when you were like, it's fine. You had to text somebody. I don't know why I was like, I was going to say the mayor of Ireland.
00:31:08
Speaker
I don't know why that came in my head or why I think that's... I know why it's funny. The mayor of Ireland just sounds funny because it's not a thing. Hey, do you agree with this? They're making it. They're calling us Irish mojitos. Again, I'm sorry. Anybody who's Irish in Ireland. Fun note though, so this bar that we went into was like an after hours bar that they have on the cruise because Disney Cruise also caters to the adults too, apparently.
00:31:34
Speaker
Yeah, you did a bourbon tasting. I told you we did the bourbon tasting, but when we walked into this room, they had like right when you walk in, they had a bar cart just filled with all these different bourbons. And on the bottom shelf was like laying out flat was Pappy 10 year, Pappy 20 year and Pappy 23. I was like, what? And I almost was going to, I'm like, I was going to ask how much for a pour. And I was like, I don't even want to know. I wanted you. You should have found out.
00:32:01
Speaker
It was your vacation, man. It was probably like $150 for a shot of traffic 23. At least you just would have known. But what if it wasn't that much, you know? A little bit less. But I doubt it would have been, still. Yeah. That would have been cool, though. But I was kind of blown away. I was like, OK, they've got the good stuff. That's super cool. I'm not a fan of cruises. So I don't know if I'd ever do that. But that does sound super fun.
00:32:25
Speaker
You've been on a lot of cruises. Well, you know any cruises I've been on in my lifetime? I can't count on two hands. Number one, I can't count. Yeah. Number two, I've never been on a cruise. My wife and sister had never been on a cruise and mostly for Becca because she gets motion sickness. Yeah, I got fucking seasick going to Alcatraz.
00:32:46
Speaker
It was kind of funny though because we got on the boat, we were still parked or like we were still docked on shore in Fort Lauderdale and we got on the boat and then within like 30 minutes Beck is like, when does seasickness start kicking in? I'm like, are you serious? She's like frantically like texting her parents. She's like, when should I expect to get sick? I'm feeling a little off. And again, it's like, I think it's in your head because you literally are on a boat and now you're just panicking and you're making yourself sick.
00:33:09
Speaker
He's like, Papa Dramamine, have some drinks, you'll be fine. She popped a dramamine, had some drinks, and she was fine. Way to go. Father of the year right there. That's good. That's good advice, man.
00:33:18
Speaker
Yeah, but back to this thing.

Flavor Discussion of Dragon's Milk White

00:33:23
Speaker
This dragon's milk white. Yeah, it's good. I like it. I'd have more. So here's the notes. I didn't see the small print on the bottom. Beryl H. Weist out with coffee, chocolate, and vanilla extract. OK. OK. Sorry, I'm yawning. I'm going to yawn straight in the mic, though.
00:33:43
Speaker
You know, I was gonna say something about vanilla early on, but I'm like, I'm just thinking that because I know it's a white stout. That now makes more sense. So I feel, way to go, way to go, pallet. So now I feel even better about how we perceived the SCP beer that I was able to pick up the vanilla, and clearly I'm not off my game here with my taste thing. Yeah, and I feel like the vanilla's predominant, and now that they mentioned the coffee, what I'm getting from the coffee is a little bit of that green coffee.
00:34:11
Speaker
I don't get that. A little bit for me. Not in an off-putting way, like it's still pleasant and drinkable. But it makes me more motivated to want to find this fresh. Maybe next time I'm at beer on the wall or something, they grab a single can and try it out. Yeah, it'd be nice to find it. And I can do it side by side with one of the older ones and see what the difference is. It'd be cool to have this on draft somewhere, too. Yeah. I'd like that. Maybe we have to go up to New Holland. I guess we're going to do a Michigan tour.
00:34:42
Speaker
Yeah, we'll make that part of our trip when we go to Clark's house. Yeah, Clark, when we come to your house. Brandon, how many dragon teeth? Because you're assuming the dragon's teeth are white. How many dragon's teeth are you going to have? Dragon's teeth are probably not white. They're bread and eating people. Anyways, I will say, based on what it is, I'm going to go like three seven. I'm with you. 100% is exactly where I was going to go, man.
00:35:10
Speaker
You and I are very much on point with each other this evening. You know, not a bad selection, especially for a thrown together episode because you were gone and I didn't do my homework like I said I was going to. But I'm glad we did this anyway. Very happy that we got to try some new beers that we haven't had yet. And you know, I love Michigan and I love beers from Michigan.
00:35:31
Speaker
And this was just a different type of night. The Roke Brewing, the Devil Dog was surprising being that high ABV. I'm still blown away by how thin it was and how, yeah, that's crazy.
00:35:45
Speaker
Yeah, not in a bad, sorry. This is why I can't do Monday episodes. Tony, go clean. I was so sweet. I already took a nap when I got home too. It's good. We won't talk about Pigeon Hill, SCP anymore. We will try and get a redemption beer sometime in the near future and the New Highlands dragons. So I'd be okay with getting any of that series, like the OCP. Oh yeah, trying some of the different ones.
00:36:14
Speaker
I truly believe that we just got a, we got a bad can here, unfortunately. And like I said, the dragon's milk, uh, white, tasty. I like it. I would have it again. It'd be nice to, again, blown away for a three year old beer. We can, we can French press this.
00:36:30
Speaker
with some Oreos. That actually sounds like, when you had said the OCB and then I thought about this beer, the first thing I thought I was like, that would be really good, this would be good with actual chocolate infused with it. It would probably look weird. Yeah. But I bet you that would taste fantastic. With that OCP beer, I just can't stop thinking about Robocop. I like that. OCP runs this city. We should make Robocop themed beers this year.
00:36:58
Speaker
Yeah. Clark and I, we had our whole Punch-Out series. That went really well. One beer done. That was just Glass Joe. We never got... We made caps, I think, for Piston Honda, I think. But I've got a Glass Joe bottle cap up in my refrigerator. Should have been a Mike Tyson beer. Well, that's what we were doing. We were doing the whole Mike Tyson series. The whole thing was that we were going to choose from where they're from. Von Kaiser was the other one we had. Sorry, that's the German one.
00:37:21
Speaker
So we did the Glass Joe blonde ale, because he's blonde, and he's from France, and so he's like French hops, and it was fine. Then for, fuck, what did I just say? Is it the second guy? Oh, shit. You made bottle caps for him, you thought? Yeah, my brain is dying. Whoever's from von Kaiser, he's from, I think Germany.
00:37:48
Speaker
And we were gonna do like a Dunkle Weiss. And then there was a whole bunch of other ones like for Piston Honda. I was like, dude, we'll do like a rice lager. This was when we first started brewing too. It was very... We're ambitious. Yes, stupid ambitious. King Hippos from Hawaii. So we were gonna do like a Kona coffee type beer or something like that.
00:38:07
Speaker
There's there's a bunch, you know and then Mike Tyson being from America I feel like we just do like I wanted to do I don't know what we decided on but I feel like doing like an imperial Like a logger of some sort, you know, I mean like American beer but times ten. Yeah, that's good I heard Clark wanted to do a malt liquor and I was like, dude, that's not cool. Oh Jesus

Reflecting on Beer and Tasting Session

00:38:29
Speaker
Oh, this episode has covered lines of racism that I didn't think we were going to get to, but here we are. Clark never said that, by the way. He doesn't work for founders. Sticking it to him again.
00:38:44
Speaker
Suck it, founders. Hey, we should have a founder's beer. All right. This beer is terrible. I think that's it. I thought we were going to run a little bit longer, but you know what? We're going to put an ad after the ad bumper. How's that? All right. Look at that. That's what we'll put that last ad. Brandon, anything else you want to say about these beers?
00:39:03
Speaker
Good lineup, disappointing with how that second one turned out. But hey, two out of three ain't bad. Yeah, not bad at all. It was fun, and always nice to get beer gifts from people and friends. Indeed, especially when they're your neighbors. Absolutely. Hey, you want some beer? You got it. Thanks, man. I'll take it. Yeah, I agree with you. Not bad, good, not great. Hey, they can't all be winners, right? Yeah, that's all right. All right, we got an after the final port accord. Brandon, I love you, man. Love you too, man. See everybody next week. Bye.
