Speaker: Bye.

Speaker: Welcome back to Fixated, a podcast with us, Ellen and Joelle. I'm Ellen. And I'm Joelle. This podcast where we talk about all the media and culture and stuff we just can't look away from. The things we just can't get over. And why they all matter so, so much to... us. this episode we get into a lot of TV talk. We talk a lot about adults on FX, season one and season two. We dip into Sterling Point a little bit, and then we kind of wrap up on the bear. And then, of course, a bunch of other stuff comes up. As always. As always, as always. We are here to delight and entertain you. I hope you enjoy the episode.

Speaker: We're here! Let's go! We made it. we made it once more like once again trials and tribulations a little bit but that's okay Things are breaking down, but you know what? We are all good. Perfection from here on out. We're all warmed up.

Speaker: exactly we've been talking a lot we've had some technology we're excited to bring another episode to your ears hopefully a good one a chill one yeah yeah yeah yeah exactly we've got some fun Easy listening audio today. exactly Just a classic fixated episode. Nothing wrong with that, my friend. Do you want to just like... Throw it into it. Not much short off the top. Um, Ellen.

Speaker: what is your non -media fixation with this episode. My non -media fixation for this episode has been... Well, the US Open was in New York. And so I've been experiencing, witnessing, watching some tennis, which I love. And so I have my lovely challenger shirt on today. Here we go. Yes.

Speaker: Yeah, if you can't see because this is an audio medium, then sorry. You'll have to find it on YouTube or it is social media. It is really good. It is really good. So let that be your incentive to... I've had this shirt for a while and I haven't shown it to Joelle because I didn't want her to see it before we were live recording. Yes. Well, I'm incredibly, may I say, envious of that shirt. I like it a lot. It's a really good shirt. Yeah, it is awesome. And again, incentive for you guys to watch our video episode that we put up on YouTube if you want to see the shirt. Exactly. We're fixated .pod on all socials. Exactly. Exactly. Yeah. yeah Anyway. Challengers Tennis. Yes. Challengers Tennis. Just my favorite things ever. This year I did not have a honey deuce because my sister and I went at about 10 a .m. um And so I just didn't feel in my heart that I needed. that you need a lot of walking in the sun because that's the thing we want on the free day

Speaker: which i don't know if anyone else has hacked this the u .s open has about a free week where you can just go and watch the players practice yeah so fun we went back in 2024 we discovered that together and it's the best it's really fun so that's what i did with my little sister

Speaker: yeah I got to watch Coco Gauff play, which was really cool. um There's this one court that I just know they shot a very specific scene in Challengers. the challenger's court so we spent some time watching a guy named Marco. practice on the challenger's court good job marco you did great thank you marco uh made me really want to re -watch challengers even though we just watched it last time we were together joel yeah like a month ago but more on that later low -key from me yeah oh my god okay but also so funny that you should mention the u .s open today as your non -media fixation when i walked downstairs this morning um whatever time it was that i woke up and went downstairs the morning is a concept morning is a concept very important my mom was burning my honey deuce candle yes so yes so um yeah which you gave me as a gift along with this little guy again more visual for our audio medium i hope that's the thumbnail oh please let us be able to that's a good nowil yeah just you have yourself ah the whole like keep up the whole time Yeah. I'll bring it back at some point in time in the future. So yeah, I can i came upstairs and I was like, I was like, look at my honey deuce candle. It's a good candle. It's so cute. It is.

Speaker: So yeah. Live life. Dennis. it's so so entertaining like i think it's really such a great sport to watch

Speaker: and like did i get mostly interested in it because of challengers like a little bit sure but i actually enjoy watching it now yeah and i know more things about it and also like i played it in middle school high school a little bit yeah i just care more now because of a film yeah and that's allowed my parents have always been fans of putting it on like we we kept up with it a lot and you know they're like serena of it all venus and serena of it all growing up was like relatively front center like basketball is our main for it don't get me wrong as a family but i feel like i have a lot of like affinity for it but

Speaker: trying to play it.

Speaker: As it goes, the story goes in my family. We, my mom signed us up when, how old am I? I feel like we were like. preteen. and you're probably somewhere in the like 10 to 12 range my sister and i and we tried to go one summer to go to like a tennis camp but it was just so hot outside that like the only like we were so miserable after like every single day of that camp that like the association with it we were just like the tennis is not happening like the tennis is just not happen yeah theoretically i wish you would have stuck it out because i think it'd be a really cool sport to like know how to play unfortunately ragrats

Speaker: Whatever. Here we are. But enjoying tennis is not the same. Yes, exactly. Just we love the open. Okay. My non -media fixation. My non -media fixation. I wish it was as fun. Well, mine is mostly media. So whatever. Cheers for like watching something. I have down.

Speaker: Three really straightforward prompts that I was hoping was going to like create something. But I guess the only thing that I was doing this week was. cooking. job searching, and sleeping not sleeping okay so you know that's just kind of like life stuff but I will say specifically with the sleeping you know I think I've come to a state of the acceptance that like

Speaker: My sleep habits can go in waves, which maybe is natural for most people. yeah But I love to be the type of person who theoretically is like going to bed at a normal time. I think that is actually how you like make it through. I think people are telling the truth that it's like you will feel better and be more productive if you probably sleep normal and maybe go exercise.

Speaker: Mmm.

Speaker: Two things I've not been doing whatsoever. I also have not cracked that. I'm sure people are telling the truth when they say that. Yeah, yeah. i don't know know it seems like it could be a big first there's like I don't like it I've had glimpses of it I've had glimpses of it I'm a bit of a scheduler just increasingly so maybe it's just my attempt to have like control over something in my life but but um I've had glimpses of it of like yeah going to bed and being like okay and I wake up in the morning and I go um earlier this year was the kickboxing of it all but uh I decided that sleep don't matter to me at least for this last for the last seven days and so I'm really trying to figure out how I will break that.

Speaker: habit i think the sleep will be fine i need to exercise um it makes me feel better and more sane but um I've also been locked in on not sleeping and exercising. Yeah, man. like Sometimes you're reading a book and it's sometimes it's like not even that good. but

Speaker: then it's really late in the night. I am simply just watching things and doing and like typing on my computer and doing all that stuff more often but i did have to say reading a book because that happens sometimes and it sounds better yeah so yeah yeah like i need to chuck my screens into the ocean great because the thing is that like again because of other brain worms is just like in a way that's maybe worse it's like

Speaker: i'm imagining that i'm being productive like i'm doing things like i'm not scrolling mindlessly but i'm like oh i said that i would work on writing this oh i wanted to prepare this oh i wanted to look up this and it's just like girl You got to go to sleep. Yeah. Like you just have to go to sleep. You're not doing anything for real. At least when I'm reading, I'm in the same mindset. I'm like, you have to, like, if you want to reach your Goodreads goal.

Speaker: yeah you have to read like this many pages tonight it's like well actually that doesn't matter yeah and sleep it does yeah because you're the only person that cares about that and also I don't really care anyway so let's go to bed it's like if you go to bed then you can do this at like the normal time you can wake up like not even early later you could just do it tomorrow when you wake up at 9am anyways like it doesn't matter oh my goodness it really I really need help but I'm like I think I am hardwired a bit like I'm good at staying up late you know I think there's also the thing that some people are like oh I get weak I'm like no like I can I can do it and I have obviously I do So I have to be disciplined. When we lived in a dorm together, it was so bad because we just wouldn't be sleeping. like yeah Because I was like, well, like if Joelle is up, I can be up. but Not even that we were even speaking to each other. but just Up.

Speaker: We are.

Speaker: up and sometimes we were up sometimes we were chatting and then obviously i'm not going to bed if we're having fun talking yeah but now that i'm 26 which i'm doing a weird thing because i'm actually not 26 in the moment but the day that this releases i will be right birthday i'm aging i'm aging so i need to go to bed so that's me that's me this week is sleep deprived of collecting sleep debts whatever yeah mr sandman has come to collect or he will exactly he will going to come to collect

Speaker: Exactly. Sing it. The people are going to love this. They love it when we break into song. They love when we sing. It's a musical episode. Surprise! Oh my goodness, we should have a musical episode.

Speaker: We should sing. We should have an episode where we only sing. Obviously. We should do like an opera style. Yeah. where it's only singing yes We've got to see an opera. We really could.

Speaker: Not that it would. sound good. I think at least on my end, but like we really could. and I wouldn't do it. We'll keep that in mind just for the future. But I agree that we should go see an opera.

Speaker: We should. Yeah. I think that'd be cool. A ballet or opera. Catch us at Lincoln Center. Yeah. At some point in the near future. I'd love to be. I really like Lincoln Center. That's great. like Yeah. We could go see Carmen, which we, it's a story that we know and love. And also because we saw the movie with Paul Maskell, which was great. But also yeah when we were in London together, for some reason, I really got fixated on it. There were these ads for, I guess, like a a modern interpretation slash retelling of the opera Carmen called Carman.

Speaker: The guy that looked like Liam Payne. He really did. And I could not stop thinking and talking about it every time we saw this poster, which was a lot. I cared a lot about Carmen. I said, yeah, Ellen. Hey, and you were getting excited too about Carmen. I feel like you're misrepresenting what was happening. No, yeah, yeah, yeah. No, you're right. I'm trying to play the straight man in this scenario where we were both pretty goofy about it at the end of the day.

Speaker: and Yeah, car man. Enough on that. Enough on car man. We'll return to car man. Cormian will return.

Speaker: i don't know why that's funny it's the sleep sleep debt is solid those are good i whatever that is for non -media onto that good stuff i'll once again ask you first please take the lead ellen what are your um media fixations i bet we were chatting i've got like a few kind of small ones this week but i guess i'll start with the biggest one um that i've really been fixated on i watched

Speaker: season one and two for the first time of adults over the last two weeks i had never seen it before literally saying it was really good i really enjoyed it i will say i had been seeing clips of it for like a year obviously on like tiktok and in my mind obviously everyone knows there's like a genre of that kind of show right now you know there's overcompensating there's adults there's not suitable for the workplace not suitable work and then maybe there's another like

Speaker: Those all kind of were exactly the same to me in my head. Yeah, they're all like Gen Z. Similar, exactly. Even though overcompensating is kind of weird because it's not actually exactly that, but for some reason it is. But they're bringing back the sitcom. They're trying to bring back like the modern sitcom. Exactly, Gen Z sensibilities. So I'd been confusing a lot of them. with each other um but i did keep seeing clips of characters who i now know are anton and paul baker obviously so i was like i guess i'll start that one like that one has a situation that i it seems like i can get into yeah and i was misinterpreting the situation like that's what i thought was happening with the clips that i was seeing with the lack of context that i had yeah it seemed to me that paul baker was like a severely closeted character but he was in love with anton And so I went in being like, OK, there was that one scene that I kept seeing clips of, I think, at the bar where they're talking about what his dream wedding would look like. And for some reason. In my head, you was in love with Anton, but he didn't know it. Yeah. He didn't want to address it. Right.

Speaker: And so then I started the show and it was great. Whatever, we're like 10 minutes in and they said something about him being fluid. And I was like. He doesn't know that, though. Like, what are you talking about? He doesn't know that. Turns out, I didn't know everything. But it was great. Long story short, I really have been enjoying that. The first season was lovely and adorable and cute. And then the second season was so good. yeah I think it really stepped it up. And the first season, I i liked a lot. yeah But they they really brought it together in that second season.

Speaker: I have to agree. Yeah, I also watched all of it like watch all of it recently i'd seen the first season. last year but it's kind of funny it was one of those where i agree it was like kind of like all mixed into there into some of those shows and so like i watched overcompensating obviously not so before it came out this year and i haven't watched that but

Speaker: Maybe. i would even though it's not continued so i don't know but i'm a bit of a mindy kaling truther um honestly i think i've liked most shows that she has created um and contributed to, starting with the Mindy Project.

Speaker: I love a mini project. That's one that maybe doesn't come up very often, but like I've seen it all and I think it's so funny. and I really liked it. it's great if you're a rom -com girly it's just great really it is like it's anyways but yeah not suitable for work i haven't seen but maybe would um wash overcompensating love that and then something kind of want.

Speaker: to like dig into a little bit deeper i have been thinking about and have seen people talk about um as how it also could theoretically fit in with like i love la um right which is the hbo yeah rachel sinon

Speaker: one which I watched all of and people kind of I think lump it in together but again put a pin in that because that kind of connects to something that I'm kind of thinking about curious about with the show but yeah when I watched the first season I remember like starting off like a little bit like hmm do I like this do I like this do I like this even though it was like making me laugh but then by the end of the first season I was like yeah that was fun like I like I liked it it was fun it had me laughing like I think the turning point in a sense was like the

Speaker: i really like the bayside stabber episode um i just thought it was so funny like i like i part of my thing with the show is like i'm struggling to like think a little bit deeper about it because i just loki can't get past just like laughing about it yeah some of the antics i'm like i'm just kind of geeked because it's hilarious to me firstly But.

Speaker: That i was what I thought was really funny. and That's yeah um Jack Nicholson's son. It is. It is. He is the stabber. Oh, and my goodness. Mr. Daredevil himself.

Speaker: is in there right and when i was re -watching it this time i was like that episode where he's is hilarious and he was great i'm a big fan of charlie cox i really like the work that he does i think he's very talented he was so funny i haven't seen him do anything like that before and i think i just saw an interview with him saying he had never done anything like that before he was so funny yeah and for what it's worth i think that like storyline itself is like really well done and done

Speaker: yeah because obviously it's like whatever it's like the teacher student thing and you're like obviously yuck and but I think it's like really like grounded and realistic though and not like I think it's well done enough yeah Where that show a couple of times, especially in the first season, I noticed this watching it. like It's like a predictable sitcom in a way that I really enjoy. Like in the way that it kind of is supposed to be. I don't like too often when things...

Speaker: are so trying to catch you by surprise that they don't really seem to fit or they go outside the norm in a way that just like doesn't work yeah this show really follows like the sitcom script in a way that doesn't happen so much anymore. And I really like it where it's like, okay.

Speaker: Clearly this is about to happen. This person's about to scream. That person's about to throw up. This person is about to... go hook up with her English teacher. yeah You know what's coming, but that doesn't make it worse. Like I think it makes it better. Oh, entirely. understand these characters very easily. Like it all adds up. It makes sense. It's grounded in reality. Like you said, I like it a lot. Exactly. Yeah.

Speaker: And just that it like accurately shows that he's like a spiraling like yeah loser a sense. um While still holding like a lot of tenderness for Billy being like.

Speaker: yeah oh well fuck like this is maybe i' her rock bottom too it's her rock bottom too right i liked I really liked how they did that but yeah still that episode the the cutting of the raw chicken and just like the silence and all of them sitting there and just like

Speaker: It's just, it was just horrifying. It was really well done. Yeah. It just really, really had me laughing. And Julia Fox is there. Yeah. Those like Billy centric episodes of which there have been like, I don't know, maybe two, three. they really like they're horrible to watch they are they're so cringy but also because like that is my soul sister like I get her I know her in her heart like like I yeah see her yeah and so I'm like girl like it's not even like why are you doing this it's like why are we doing yes yes no because yeah I really see myself in her sometimes in a way that I don't want to I'm like girl

Speaker: pull yourself to together like you gotta like you gotta stand up yeah i like her care i like i really like her um i guess taking on kind of like this try hard but struggling exactly she's neurotic but she's a disaster of a character yeah i really like it i saw someone maybe on like tiktok say something that in the first episode they really thought she was going to be like the grown -up of the group and she's not like she's they're all kids and she's a kid too like she's yeah a mess she doesn't know what she's doing and i really enjoy it yeah yeah she's

Speaker: trying so hard but she doesn't know what she's doing yeah that is a reflection one of the worst of them that is a mirror image and like so many in so many ways with her character like again and kind of the like yeah age crisis the job crisis the direction you're just like like I think they really zero in on that with our character in a way that's like a little too real. A little too... Unreal. I said. well like Don't start a podcast.

Speaker: That would be crossing the line. That'd be too much. it so like high achiever in high school. like pipeline. of Yeah. girl like girl off i guess it's something like so much fun potential in the first season and just like be like a great time i don't know but i also kind of didn't like keep up keep up keep up with it that much but when they were like second season i was like well hell yeah let's go like put that shit on and

Speaker: oh my god i love the second season too yeah it was so like it was so good um so much fun and i think the standouts for me overall is anton and i think isa is awesome like i really like what they did with her in the second season yes and did it great they're doing her justice in a way that i like almost would they wouldn't but They take care with her. Which I really like.

Speaker: Yes. Just like, I think such great construction of these characters. Like they just, they're so fun. And they are so weird. yeah's So absurd in their own, in their own ways. yeah um And yeah, I feel like people are talking so much about it being like Gen Z show. to And honestly, like, yeah, I don't know. There's something about watching them and watching the show. And I was kind of like checking the actors ages, too. I was just kind of curious if there's like much of a gap or anything like that, because it just seems so like.

Speaker: like well observed yes like well observed and then obviously heightened where i was like yeah man like those those are the bros like those are that's the bros and i guess maybe it's like also the like new york of it all it's not in new york whatever much to my chagrin But there was something about their dynamics and their antics and just the dialogue. Obviously, the writing is to commend in that respect. But I was like, this feels so silly, real, true. That's how I feel like I'd feel if also some of my friends all lived in a house together. Exactly. It really does. It's good. It's good. In the end of that first season.

Speaker: Just to give the Paul Baker and Anton storyline a moment of her own. think. This is one of the highest compliments I could give, by the way. yeah that that kiss at the end of the first season is, it really reminded me a lot of the new girl Nick and Jess first kiss.

Speaker: There you go. which like okay that is sending high high praise for me exactly exactly this goes crazy the best

Speaker: onscreen kiss of all time. awesome Yeah. It's up there. Followed up closely only by the stairwell kiss in Heated Raccoon, obviously. there we go but i think that this one could be a third um but it's the if you know what i'm talking about the nick and jess kiss obviously like the context is slightly different because the nick and jess kiss happens way after but there's a big moment of like all the friends are like kiss kiss kiss we want to see you kiss that's the moment where i really was like i've been here before i know how this goes and i really enjoyed that because yeah girl is one of my favorite shows of all time and that to me was a beautiful callback yes yes yes i love that i love that comparison it's

Speaker: It's really good. And I feel like maybe it's like an obvious point, but yeah, the show very much feels very new girl aligned. It really does. And I feel like. possibly just making the like basic connection of like it being on fx but i do think there's like i'm trying to figure out how to say this and maybe it's just because i'm like not actually an expert on like comedy and satire so like give me that space but i do think that i feel like it also kind of like

Speaker: is a mixed between new girl and kind of it's always sunny vibes yeah in a way i could see that um i was thinking like maybe there's the fx thing so they're like allowed to be kind of like crafts the like slight absurdistness exactly exactly and just like their choices are quite questionable at times yeah but i feel like there's something about i'll have to like

Speaker: try to read I meant to like read a little bit more of like how I guess yeah like TV critics and stuff are writing about it because I see a lot of it but I haven't. And like paywalls, you know, so I don't know. There's just so much talk about it being like, is this the like Gen Z hangout comedy that people have been looking for? Is this and that? And I do think that there's something about it that's maybe... I guess the like necessarily satirical elements of like.

Speaker: talking about how Gen Z is or like can be and like the world around like I think naturally I'm like gravitated towards to how they kind of like talk about and interact with like social media and like yeah digital stuff I thought like the man on the street type of like vibe things was really funny and they're like digital paths and like scrubbing things I don't know just some of these things really funny to like put forward and It does a really good job of...

Speaker: Like rooting it. this show in reality and making it feel really real and i think that the social media of it all really really worked a lot for me especially like I think during the end credits of that episode where they're like scrubbing their whatever they show their real digital yeah footprints which I loved that was so much fun but specifically and I wanted to talk about this from like a Sorry to be a nerd, but like a marketing standpoint. um Obviously the actor, Jack Inanen, who plays Paul Baker, before the season came out, I think. Don't correct me if I'm wrong because I don't care. He...

Speaker: released a Man on the Street interview with Ananiya of Gaydar. in the same Paul Baker outfit. And I was, I remember being like, wow, I really liked that. And then I saw it in the episode and I was like, oh my God, that's exactly what he was wearing when he did the episode. But then.

Speaker: All of these... Real life.

Speaker: influencers that they i love that they brought them in it made it feel like they're existing in our universe that they have the same influencers that we have they started releasing these clips yeah it's paul baker i love it yeah that's so cool i don't think i've seen anything like that before yeah that's just so much fun like i think the first one i saw other than the the ananiya one was the house tour that they did. I think I saw the street hearts one first, but I saw that one recently as well. Yeah. The house tour. The house tour one was so cool. I was for a split second. I was like, wait, what's happening? Like yeah what's going on? And I was like, Oh my God, like they're really doing it. This is so much fun. It's just, it felt so cool that they like took the time to actually film all of those and then let those people release them on their own channels. Like what cool marketing, how yeah much fun. Like it's great. It's awesome. It's kind of a from all sides. It's really cool. Yeah. They got a fresh. thing going on there which my only gripe is like i think the same grip that everyone else feels basically which is just like season length. Not really doing. eight episodes like it is a complete credit to them that like

Speaker: it doesn't actually feel Rushed? Some of these like more.

Speaker: overarching plot points or arcs like paul baker and anton like exactly like somehow it's still you feel like you can follow something but like we need to let it breathe like i think of how much we could achieve if it was even 12 episodes like we have to start going in the right direction that's the only really like negative thing i have where you cannot have a slow burn if you've only got eight episodes and the next season isn't guaranteed like if they want to give these characters justice they have to like they want to wrap it up where if they had to end after two seasons like it still feels complete yeah but

Speaker: if this show had longer to go they could really stretch it same way with Billy and Samir which like spoiler spoiler sorry um yeah absolutely love that I've been voting for that since day one a little bit episode one you can see it right like you understand exactly there's little inklings of it throughout which I absolutely loved and I love that we got to see a split second of it at the end of season two But in a really real way, I wish we hadn't. I wish that it had had much more time to like build and brew. Yeah. For me to really yearn for it and want it and think that I must be imagining this, you know? Yes. Yes. Before it finally it happened. and And I was like, oh, yay. But.

Speaker: if we'd be able to wait longer but like It just big would have been so much more. Exactly. It would have been so much more like the path would have been so much better. like Yeah, I completely agree. And like.

Speaker: It's just such a, such a shame, like across, across Hollywood. But that's kind of what I was saying with kind of including I Love L .A. in there. away because they're like yeah it's someone but i saw someone talking about i wish i could properly set my sources but I don't follow him He was kind of talking about a similar topic, but...

Speaker: how it is a little bit disorienting and it kind of like affects the structure and the perception of such a show that is a sitcom. that is an honest true in a sense sitcom um to kind of have this creep of this like prestige TV model. of it being shorter seasons and stuff because It's like...

Speaker: 25 to 30 minute episodes, right? And yeah also I'm like, so we are we are missing the potential. There's nothing bigger. To have so much more built out. And again, they're doing a great job. Like it's not. Exactly. I don't think it actually like. questions the like quality again it's to their credit that they've kind of been able to do this it really proves how good they are that they can do so much in so little time yeah but like i want more i demand i nearly demand more yeah because i think it could it could theoretically have a legendary run it really could gave it a little bit more like i think these like characters are great and

Speaker: yeah each of their little journeys and each of their like dynamics with each other like it's just it's great please just like give it more air to breathe please it's driving me crazy i want it for the show so badly. And I won for every single other show on this earth.

Speaker: Exactly. Even if you are an hour long, because again, let's go back to. the like basics let's go back to the fundamentals like I feel like we always use Glee as an example. But like, those were long episodes and long seasons. There's so much of Glee. and There is an unlimited amount of Glee. Yeah. And again, we don't even have to, we probably would not return to that much. But like.

Speaker: Come on. It's possible. like Please, give them more. If Ryan Murphy can do it, I promise you can too. like Yes, exactly. There's so much Glee. like Scientists still have not found the end of Glee. There is so, so much. like i want I want for this show to have the mid -season finale and like give it a couple. you know like I would love that. I want my favorite thing in a sitcom, specifically like New Girl. this is New Girl is my like ideal sitcom. also so all sitcoms kind of measure up to new girl in my mind i want holiday episodes i want halloween i want thanksgiving i want christmas like it's so much fun seeing these characters in different situations and you just can't hit that many so situations when you've only got eight episodes and you have to build their normal reality yeah because it's not It's not as fun to see them outside of their reality if - you didn't spend that much time. in what they're used to anyway, you know?

Speaker: Exactly.

Speaker: I want filler episodes I love a filler episode like you're so right though especially like the holiday like we gotta to get it we gotta get it because I could see them doing like a special or something like that if i get like year I want it in i want a holiday episode and i want a wedding episode i love a wedding episode yes like yeah i'll go to one big event together dress up wear things you don't normally wear party hard like it's so much oh wait they would do so they would have such a fun wedding of i think they do that just the Because again, in terms of like reflecting our reality. Yes.

Speaker: I feel like there's something about like, even if they are able to like build out a backstory and for whichever character it may be, listen and I feel like it's something realistic they may be able to do. but like all my friends here. are like not getting married this and then but like oh i have to go back home for like a uh somebody's got a high school friend getting married exactly and you bring them you know like all you bring ems

Speaker: And listen, I know my good friend Billy is going to be acting a freak. Like she's going to freak out. Let her lose her mind at a high school friend's wedding because she's 25 and she's unmarried. And does that mean that she's a failure? She certainly thinks so. Literally, exactly. In real life, no, it doesn't. No, it doesn't. But for Billy, for my sister, my girl, Billy Schaefer.

Speaker: She's losing her mind. And I know that about her. Yes. We all know that about her. Oh my goodness. the one that one character that makes me love so much besides Anton again. oh you Genius. Love you. Zach Carlos. I knew you were going to say Zach Carlos.

Speaker: oh my gosh oh my gosh he's so much fun because what is his deal what is wrong with him what is wrong with them i love it so much i kind of forgot this is why it was like awesome to watch the first season again i kind of completely forgot about him and then they get to yeah because he only shows up in like the last episode right they're finally like oh we have to go talk to zach carlos which i need a flashback i need to understand i need to see their wedding yes yes like again even like to just keep on going based off of new girl. Like you really incorporated so many flashbacks of like college days and this, that'd be fun. Anyways, which is not going to have the exact same feel of new girl. I understand that, but.

Speaker: I think they're really following New Girl's example. and I've seen it in a couple of ways specifically. like That's yeah clearly also their ideal sitcom. Yeah, right. i feel like if feel Even beside the like roommate thing. um Yeah. It's just... I can sense it

Speaker: yeah because i feel like they they've got the same dna as you've said before as the like current of culture flows or whatever like and it's um it's not it's like silly to like go over such specific scenes but zach carlos oh oh my god this like flowers to you king there's one moment in that like last episode of season one where he yells like no like it's amir's face i was like this person is crazy it's awesome just And his, like, reappearance in the second season. Yeah. I really, Anton's, you know, like, trying to hide someone up the stairs. Yeah. And I really was like, please, God, let it be Zach Carlos.

Speaker: And he comes in and he goes, hi, freaks. I was like, thank God. That's so awesome. oh it that really has me laughing bro the only other part that really like

Speaker: I think I was like crying. I was laughing so hard. I think it's in the first season. Now I'm like, I watched them so close together. I'm not 100 % sure. But when Issa and Anton think that they've killed their therapist, um and they're speaking to the girl who can speak to ghosts. Yeah, who's Grace Kuhlenschmidt. Yeah. um Which I was so excited to see her. I love her. And she's trying to use the Ouija board and she can't spell the name George.

Speaker: Legitimately, I was crying. I was laughing so hard, just alone in my bed, like, oh my god. Yeah. like truly had me sitting here i literally say in my bed being like it's it's just so amazing stupid it's so funny and one thing that also really got me when in the first episode of the second season with paul baker's friends they're like killed me oh my goodness so funny because also like we know people like the main group of friends and we know people like those guys it's like that's real that's when you're 25 living in new york like you've experienced all these types of people you're wearing a he has like a directed by um Greta Gerwig that part I had to back it up because I it just caught me by surprise so much yeah oh my god that made me really really laugh that part was so funny it was so well done the cut to his directed by Greta Gerwig t -shirt like they're cooking I'm just saying whatever's going on in that writing room and that's where it also like I don't know I've been thinking I guess part of um

Speaker: the point, you know? We're like, it might matter so, so much. And being like, yeah, like, what's the point of, like, like no, a whatever. That's even barely what I mean. All I'm trying to say is that it's so refreshing to to watch something that is so, like, genuinely funny. Yes! Because... I just I'm like everyone should be more funny I should be more funny yeah it just makes me feel like it makes me want to be funnier light and fresh it's so nice yeah I was like dang I was thinking about doing improv I'm like damn maybe I really should like it's so fun to be funny like that's like I guess it feels like it must be really fun to do as well that kind of like extra layer of it I'm like ah

Speaker: Thank goodness. Thank goodness people are taking the time to be funny, to think and joke. Making things like this again. Yeah. Thank you, Nick Kroll. Like, that makes so much sense, too, that it's him. Of course it is. And the writers, the actual, like...

Speaker: Ben Kronengold and Rebecca Shaw. Created and primarily written by. Kudos to those two. Just so silly. Bring back silliness. Love. us Bring back silliness.

Speaker: So yeah. love adults yeah i think they did a big fan of it yeah yeah anything else sos okay for fixing really quickly because i'm not all the way through it yet i was like if we're gonna be talking adults maybe i need to be watching more tv that everyone else is watching so i also started watching sterling point oh okay which is really fun finally hits the pod another Canadian TV show.

Speaker: Which also, not to immediately bring it back to adults, but adults now has... two of the same cast members as heated rivalry overlapping just in the background. They have Svetlana and Sasha. Sasha is in season two. Oh and there's my goodness. I...

Speaker: thought i recognized him and just kind of was like ah you like i don't know yeah oh my goodness yeah that seemed also so funny if i were a crap oh my gosh i was like you are kidding you're kidding so funny anyway and then so lana had like one line in the first sorry i'm not using their real names whatever yes the actors we know

Speaker: But um Sterling Point, the actress who plays Svetlana, she's apparently in Sterling Point. I haven't gotten to her scene yet. okay But I know that she's in at least two episodes of Sterling Point. So I'm excited for her to come in. Sterling Point is, do you know anything about it? Have you seen it?

Speaker: um i just like wasn't ready to get into all of that like i i remember explaining it to a friend and i was like you know my appetite isn't really quite with like watching kind of like white people drama this week.

Speaker: That could change. there It changes very often. We can get into it at another point. But when it was first like drumming up, I was like, my interest is. really low yeah honestly and it's so not really my type of show honestly like i knew going in that it wouldn't be and it isn't it's not bad at all i like it better than maybe some other shows that i watched this year off campus but hey

Speaker: It is very like, to me, giving The Summer I Turned Pretty, which I didn't watch, but I had seen a few episodes and you loved. Hey, that's kind of shit, Loki. I know. So this is me like bringing you towards Sterling Point. Yeah. Where it's just kind of like a teen drama situation, but it's very specifically watching it. I had the thought it is just Outer Banks if there were lesbians in it. It's a good thing. I guess. it's Yeah, that's nothing but good stuff. That's interesting. That could be compelling. I never watched Outer Banks. You didn't? No. I don't know if I knew this. i don't think i finished it. Is that still going? I think it's done. It's like a teen show.

Speaker: where there's some rich people and some normal people and they're like on the beach kind of in the woods like there's some sort of whatever they're by the water and the outer banks are north carolina yes so exactly yeah they're in north carolina and here they're in and like the canadian woods on a lake so like not right exactly the same environment but same vibe um a lot of boats and they're kind of like

Speaker: solving a mystery, but not really. Like, in Outer Banks, they're kind of doing a treasure hunt, and this one, the main girl is trying to figure out like what her mom's deal was or something. She's got like a family.

Speaker: mystery how she's trying to unlock but it's mostly interpersonal drama i think is the focus of kind of both of them and they're running around being kids on the beach in the summer same exact vibe Only once again.

Speaker: lesbians in this one which is points yeah exactly makes it better it's yeah So it was super enjoyable, easy watching. They've got...

Speaker: To me, same exact vibe as Summer I Turned Pretty because they've got a lot of needle drops in the same way that the Summer I Turned Pretty did. Yeah. Songs I actually know. Rodrigo and stuff like that. Yeah. Okay. You had the budget, Amazon. Everyone is lucky that we did not have this podcast when the songwriter and producer was going on. Because out of the show, I could not stop talking about it for some reason. You loved that one. I liked that show, yeah. Because it's just so entertaining. It's so ridiculous. But the drama, which I'm assuming, if Sterling Point's kind of similar, as I said, I could get around to watching it and liking it. Probably, but watching it. So far, there's less romance, but same drama.

Speaker: but there might be romance later there's like a little bit there's an inkling but it's not the main point the main point is her familial situation at least so far Yeah. Two episodes in. Okay. Well, yeah. Keep me posted. We shall see if I get around to it. Exactly. Yeah. Those are my interesting kind of fixations for the moment. How about you, Joelle?

Speaker: What are your fixations lately? So we talked about adults. Yes. Loved adults. I've been watching a lot of other TV. Again, I mentioned it last episode too, I think. um Just like some things here and there. I can't remember. Did I talk about the bear? Did I talk about finishing watching the bear? No, we haven't talked about the bear. okay oh my god i haven't finished the bear crap that is something that i think is universally felt at this point um yeah i think

Speaker: There's multiple people I know who were also just like, oh man, I gotta finish that. Yeah. And so I did it though. I buckled down and I did it. I had to get through the majority of the second half of season four and all of season five. And long story short, like, I'm happy it's done. And not and not in some like, no, no, not in some like, in some type of way. But, like... I feel like it's actually been around for longer than we realized. I'm happy that.

Speaker: still though it only was like five seasons you know like i i can kind of understand that i'm happy that it didn't feel actually drawn out and it kind of ended on a like good and like developed note for everyone involved basically it didn't feel all for naught and i think that like the characters that you come to know and love sydney tina richie those are like my favorite ones that are like yeah i think they like get to a really Great. point and it's really satisfying to watch their story specifically

Speaker: if i haven't said before my qualms with the bear as it was going on after season two like season one everyone was like wow wow it was there for it loved it in season two everyone was like oh wait this can be like kind of slowed down and cinematic and beautiful and money like all these things and kind of dipping more into some other characters and like getting invested in their emotional journey all these things and you're like wow that's nice they end season two with that stupid bid. freezer situation. and do You hated that poor girl.

Speaker: i hey let's be clear I just like don't understand why they decided to have them interact with each other in the ways that they did. just from like Uh -huh.

Speaker: I guess from whatever I can say from like a writing. point of view like I just like couldn't stand the scenes themselves like I feel hard to watch they were hard to watch I just couldn't quite do the don't know i couldn't i couldn't i couldn't i couldn't yeah and that's the thing like it wasn't It was a little specific to their scenes. I felt like it was just not really. gelling as they seem to really want to get across that it would and i think it got

Speaker: better. I think they kind of dropped it in the last season. Carmi and Claire. Okay. clear just because I don't think we like named it specifically. didn't yeah um I think it got better and they kind of dropped.

Speaker: it in the last season like she does not Show up. basically at all um because they do the last season in a way that I can really respect that feels more akin to The first season. first two seasons in a way where it just actually has kind of the issue that they're going through which is that like the actual restaurant's like kind of falling apart and it's basically filmed in like one night

Speaker: like it's just a season across one night so it kind of makes enough sense where like yeah she doesn't really come up but again it's not personal to her like it's just an element of the show that like going into the third and some of the fourth seasons but i think the third season is really kind of the like thing that like completely slowed down any amount of intrigue that i had in it because i just couldn't get through these scenes that were just so like simply put a bit boring to watch there was just such a stagnation which

Speaker: i say like i can respect if it's supposed to be really reflecting again like Karmis. own stagnation and like i keep on calling him an energy vampire which is like not nice but it's just how i feel about it like again it's like kind of it's in his character it's in his character arc that is kind of the point so i can understand how that kind of reflects where he's like not able to have any actual conversation with anyone whatsoever so that the scenes you're just sitting there and you're like please please please I can respect that.

Speaker: But also, stop showing me the facts. I don't find their funny. And I don't want to watch it. And it's too much. It's too much. They are kind of funny. facts They are kind of funny, but it's too much. It was too much. I just there was a lot like some of the like balancing of the vibes of the tone just really kind of like fell through in season three going into season four and then kind kind of picked up a little bit again right at the end of season four and then season five. Yeah.

Speaker: I think... I don't remember where I stopped watching. I think it was somewhere around season three. I just got distracted and forgot to finish it. But the Claire thing was making sense to me because I was interpreting it as like, oh.

Speaker: carmy clearly doesn't want to be in this relationship with this girl he was kind of forced into it in the beginning even though he was doing he just kind of fell into it and then he just kind of kept following it because that's what it felt he had to do. Mm hmm. and so he wasn't that into it. And so it made sense to me.

Speaker: that it he was kind of stumbling along making a mess of things and not that interested in it. Yeah. In the beginning. And then it continued and I was like. maybe That's not what they were doing. Maybe I was.

Speaker: putting like too much thought into it. yeah Not that it necessarily wasn't the point. But like... i don't know Yeah. Maybe I was wrong about that. it I don't know. because I could see it being like... accurate because Especially if if it would. be a reflection of how he feels about yeah cooking and like being in the restaurant and stuff in general From what I've picked up from how the story ended, which...

Speaker: me having not finished it. It seems like there wasn't the payoff. of that specific storyline that I was concocting. um No. I could... So... honestly in this moment barely recall what their last interaction maybe was so like that makes me Yeah. on. all of the Claire stuff, which I was looking at with. you know, an open heart. I was like hopeful that they knew what they were doing with it, at least with less of that.

Speaker: feeling and just kind of where I guess I'm more now. I'm like, maybe it was a little messy and it didn't make sense. and yeah I didn't enjoy it. because I just don't know if it added anything. Exactly. I was fine with not enjoying it when I thought there was a reason I wasn't enjoying it. When I thought I wasn't enjoying it on purpose. When that was the point of it. If it was a storytelling aspect. But now I don't.

Speaker: want to watch it i mean the one thing that it also reminded me like getting to the the end of it i like this is a very beautiful show all like and there's a lot of artistic value there and again the only like shiny moments were like episodes that focused more on sydney or like were exclusively about sydney yeah or about ah Tina and stuff like I don't know I think

Speaker: If Chromie's supposed to be the main character, I just kind of ended up... Really not caring about him? yeah she's like i don't know but again it's kind of one of those things where i'm like i have obviously my qualms about it but it's a pretty cool show like good for them that's great um yeah i think that's cool over i'm sad that it had the potential that it had and then didn't seem to follow up on that in at least the way that I wanted it to. Not to say that it was a failure or anything, but just.

Speaker: that it wasn't exactly what I wanted. Makes me a little sad. Because I loved the beginning of it. Right, exactly. I just feel like it really just crash banged on the scene, you know? And people were like, whoa. yeah it was rightfully so i mean this is so interesting it's just so cool but again as i maintain io ate it all up ate it all up like yeah just very very good stuff stand out and stuff obviously so it brought us

Speaker: io to at least and the on the like yes the big screen the silver screen all screens and stuff like that so we have to commend it for that and she did such fantastic work throughout the entire run of it really such good stuff and also directed some episodes if i'm not Yes, you're right. I think she wrote the Tina episode, Napkins, or not wrote, I'm sorry, directed. Is that what it's called? Yes, I think so. I think so. but yeah so that was the other show that i guess i'll spend time mentioning the bear and then the other thing i think i was fixated on Over the last two weeks. It's because we unfortunately lost Dolly Parton

Speaker: I know. i know it's what a life what a life what a life well lived and i think that's the thing i kind of was able to i I'm already of a fan, obviously, because how are you not a fan of Dolly Parton? um and I really like her music, obviously. And she is such... a music catalog. That's crazy. like I feel like I say I like her music and i'm like and I know I've honestly really barely

Speaker: scratch the surface. Yeah, exactly. like the amount of what she has like i was putting her on just like shuffle like her spot page on shuffle me too um and just like letting it play letting it rock and i was like There are things coming up here that I'm like, well, again, somehow didn't cross my desk, but save. Fantastic. Save. Fantastic. So much fun. I especially want to shout out, though, I was surprised to see that Two Doors Down is not that high on her popularity list. That is... such a song i like it is like top as far as i'm concerned and the ones that i'm most aware of like absolute banger there's some there's something that it does to my brain

Speaker: And it's so much fun. It's such a good groove. Maybe that's part of it too. And it just makes you want to be like. Yes, like... yes Like, I don't know. i love I love that song. and i feel like yeah every song of hers i just am like oh my god that's so much better than i remember it being like when my mom showed it to me when i was little like it's so she is all so good yeah Let like. like Ah!

Speaker: So good. like Obviously we all know this. but like actual angel on earth. Just. She seems like like the most incredible person. She did the most. the most things that a person can do. It was just so like, I think it's just like surreal when you watch clips from literally. footage or clips from yeah any point in time in her life and career and you're like Ugh!

Speaker: what a like spark like i just yeah it's it's just one of the things where i'm like i can't help but completely adore her and yeah i think it was like seeing all the clips circulate on social media and listening to music a bit and then this like good old cable tv i was like sitting there one night and I saw that Steel Magnolias was on. And so like popped that on and was like mostly watching it. And she's just like.

Speaker: so fun and awesome and wonderful and it's a really funny movie like they just had like jokes a mile an hour and i was like this is awesome and then it kind of like switches to this like sat like whatever um but i was like i'd never seen that before and i was like love adore and then earlier this week.

Speaker: i was like you know what let's do a what a little bit more and i watched nine to five in full for the first time i love that movie and i'd never yeah for some reason i've never fully seen it nine to five again needless to say like it's funny when it's like classic classic classic Yeah. but like

Speaker: What? a song actually what yeah song crazy she's and her performance is so good and it's such a funny little movie too with like just the realist like still relevantly progressive message like at the end of the day and you're just like like she just like wow When you talk about national treasure, I feel like people like to say this, i am up but like that's a national treasure. That's crazy.

Speaker: who didn't like Dolly Parton. I don't yeah think it's possible. Like, everyone. yeah Everyone loves Dolly Parton. Of course the flags were flying at half past. No, genuinely. like It's just, like it's really special. There was no other option in a real way, you know? Yeah, how and in the simplest ways.

Speaker: She's just a legend. She's just a legend. I'm getting so many songs that just have this like message that you're like. Yes. You're like, I'm going to make sure people know this as much as I can. but Actually, my children will know this. yes Just to get the point across. She just knew how to she just knew how to do it. um What an absolute talent. So yes, I was thinking about Dolly Parton a lot. That's a really good one. ah Love Dolly. And then the very last thing is like kind of silly. And it's where I was going to mention Challengers again, which is kind of. I guess I might have a little like.

Speaker: prompt if there but basically as a listening It is my birthday. And and increasingly, I'm realizing Over the last couple of years, I'm like. i love my birthday i love being a birthday person um i like to celebrate my birthday i think it's fun i don't think i'm like high key about it but i'm not low key about it oh it's my birthday yeah And. I was just thinking about like this month in general just being like birthday month but media edition and i was like i should just re -watch my favorite things

Speaker: I should just like... go ahead and just like commit and i just like make a list of them and just kind of like boom boom boom and just check them off as much as i'm able to so re -watch and re -listen to my favorite things there's also why i'm wearing this t -shirt

Speaker: partially wasteland baby hosier i was like i need to give that a little like listen through that's the point in time this month i feel like i'm a little behind because we're into the first week and I was kind of busy not doing that. So I was thinking about re -watching Challengers. I was thinking about re -watching Succession just to like get that fresh in the mind. Some movies that I watched this week.

Speaker: i watched i just did a double header of like princess diaries princess diaries 2 just because something like i was like might as well just like get something chill in and that seemed appropriate and we mentioned it last episode and i was like yeah we can run that back so that's kind of my start in that sense but yeah i thought it was just like a fun exercise to kind of like we talk so much about our favorite stuff and things as is the remit of this podcast but yeah i was like but what would make the like perfect birthday. day um

Speaker: re -watch re -listen like i was trying to think about like what would be actually... the one and i haven't come up with the answer quite yet for on the day but what you're gonna watch yeah maybe on the day watch or like engage with in general like i'm really trying to think because maybe i don't know if i'll be able to do it on the day to be honest because i don't know what my day will actually be yeah

Speaker: But yeah, I don't know. I guess like question for the class. isn't you I love being the class. yeah Yeah. Being like, what is like, what's first comes to mind when you're like, I need to honor and enjoy my birthday. I am watching this. I think I was just thinking about this because.

Speaker: My birthday was about a month ago, and I try to do that like right around my birthday. I try to watch either my favorite movies or the things that I've been enjoying or whatever. um This year, maybe the day after my birthday, I went to rewatch Leviticus in theaters because they were still playing it in a couple of very small indie ones, and I loved that one. Last year, I rewatched La Chimera in theaters because, again, I was playing that in in like a small indie theater, and I love La Chimera. I almost rewatched that one again this year.

Speaker: Challengers is up there recently. yeah I've been wanting to rewatch one of my favorite movies is me just like doing my Letterboxd top four right now. Oh, yeah. One of my favorite movies is Cyrano starring Peter Dinklage. Yes. I love that movie and I've been wanting to rewatch that one. It's a musical. It's just like. It's like a period piece and it's...

Speaker: cheesy and lovely and wonderful and i think there's just like so much love in it i just love it yeah but then on my actual birthday i this year watched the movie breakfast with scott Which I had never. What is that? that. I don't know why I found it. I had never heard of it before. It's about, you're actually, I do know why I found it and so are you. The second I describe this plot to you, you're going to know. I watched it. Oh my God. It's about.

Speaker: Maybe 2008 or 9. It's this movie about... It's like this, I don't know, middle -aged gay couple. One of them is a lawyer and the other is a professional hockey player. Okay, yeah. And they're two, like, mostly closeted men, even though they're, like, partners. um And then one of them...

Speaker: for whatever reason i don't remember gets custody of this very like flamboyant child um and they're very much like Because it's from 2008. It's these two like gay guys being homophobic to this little gay kid. Oh my gosh. Really strange. um It was funny and it was cute. And like, obviously, I got halfway through it and then I had to go out to dinner.

Speaker: And at this dinner, I was telling my friends that I was with about it. And I was like, I really hope that the point of this movie is that. the small gay child teaches the adult gay men to not be homophobic. But I wasn't. positive that's where it was headed right like my birthday guarantee downhill that's the yeah way this movie ends but it was great He taught them the power of love. and internalized homophobia.

Speaker: Yeah. They ended it. Yes. It was great. It was really cute. No more. Tubi. Tubi. I love Tubi. Although there's no place at this moment where it could be other than Tubi. Exactly. Obviously it was on Tubi. Breakfast with Scott. Kind of recommend. And this isn't me recommending. This is me telling you the plot in detail.

Speaker: Yes. Watch it if it sounds intriguing to you. No, totally. That was my birthday this year. I see. That's interesting. No, no, no. I mean, that's what I sought. Yeah. I was thinking, I don't know, in a way I don't want it to be Challengers because I've done Challengers on my birthday before. Exactly. And it's also been a recent watch. And I will re -watch Challengers. I don't have a problem doing that. Of course. I will always, always re -watch Challengers.

Speaker: is but yeah then i was just kind of like i don't know like really trying to think about like what i could watch but that's also like the issue with even planning to like listen to music i really like um which is that i like it potential to have some sad across my path i like this with that stuff yeah which again it's beautiful to me so that's why i like it but it's like how do we balance it out a little bit um A couple of years ago on my birthday, we were like, oh, like. let's just like throw on an easy cute movie. We put on Barbie.

Speaker: We're like, oh, it was so cute. And then like halfway through, we kind of released. I was like, um, maybe. a bad decision on my birthday and i'm freaking out about getting older and now we're watching this movie about like womanhood and whatever yeah so yeah you gotta be careful with that careful right My lesson yeah that I learned. Exactly. so I think my letter of extra view for that night was like, I should have just put Challengers on. Real, real, real, real. That's funny. um I think last year, because it was sometime between like leaving Oxford, like moving back to the States and my birthday, because I basically came back here on my birthday. I was trying to watch Francis Ha.

Speaker: Mmm. And... everything kept glitching when i was trying to watch like there was some reason why like it just like wasn't working out and i was like you know what i think that's a good i think that was a good song i think that was a sign from the universe that like god stopped you maybe we don't need to be contemplating young adulthood and yeah you know finding direction and stuff and like i was like let's put on an avengers movie and like chill exactly something easy because i'm like sitting here i'm like maybe i should re -watch past lives

Speaker: Maybe do not. maybe not and my love you can do that any other day

Speaker: Not on a birthday. Everything is very dangerous. You're really walking the line on a birthday. I think it's really dangerous. It's really thin ice. Yeah. Yeah. I love to be committed to at least trying to have a good time on my birthday. Exactly. That's the thing. You have to try. I have to try to put my best foot forward. So we might have to. If you're turning on Francis Haught, you're not trying. You're trying to have a bad time. Yeah. So we'll see. But I guess it's a good kind of thought experiment slash potentially what I'm looking for to fixating on. in the near future that y 'all will hear about. post -birthday.

Speaker: so That's basically it for me. i heard Us always concerned about nothing having nice say and we but not Shocker, we can talk. Your voice can talk. gab but Exactly. yeah like We got it.
