Speaker: Hi! Welcome back to Fixated, a podcast with us, Joelle and Ellen. I'm Joelle. I am Ellen. This is the podcast where we talk about... All the media and culture and stuff we just can't look away from. The stuff we just can't seem to get over. and why it all matters so much to us. This episode was really fun. We talked a lot about the new album by Phoebe Bridgers, Lost Weekend. We talked about the movie Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma.
Speaker: and the through line that will shock you. Let's get on into it. Yes, have fun. Enjoy. G'day! Welcome back! hey we're having a very silly time over here on the pod already The amount of technical difficulties we've already had.
Speaker: Hey, that's the life. That's the life. that That's what we things that so do. For you. For y 'all. y'all this to the airwaves. Exactly. to um to podcast to the world hey yes yes yes yes i You might notice I just caught myself eye - in re -listening back to this podcast.
Speaker: I've been trying to listen to some of our episodes back and actually consume the media that we've created. Love that, yeah. But just a little bit. Can't do too much because it's a little grating on the ears to listen to oneself. um But oh my gosh, do I say exactly.
Speaker: No time. It's so annoying. I hate to even like bring attention to it. because then other you know To bring attention to other people. I also say exactly a lot.
Speaker: I've got certain words that I know I do and I will not be mentioning them because I don't want anyone else to notice. Yeah. I've kind of shot myself in the foot probably by doing that, but we're on exactly watch. Like I'm trying, I'm trying to find different interjections. We do a lot of...
Speaker: And we've talked about this before. We do a lot of talking over each other for every time. And I i can't stop myself because you start talking and I need to talk. Hey, what about me? Exactly. like No, no, no. I want to go now. But yes, we are here with another episode. um before other technical difficulties. I was just getting into the... Once again, meta conversation being like, oh, I'm just like.
Speaker: we keep on doing the thing and this is exciting yeah it's fun 14 feels we gotta to quit counting But that's okay. exactly It's hard to stop. She's no longer a preteen. She's a teen teen now. She's a teen teen. Exactly. Exactly. not a um yeah it's really hard to stop counting i've realized because you're like oh you should just like we should just chill and be like but no but like each one is a new one 14 that's crazy and it's been like we started this in march right sure First up was in March.
Speaker: I think so. And doing math, that's almost six months. I fixated. Look it. us six months of fixated but what a beautiful six months yeah i think by the time because this is going to post In September. So yeah. I think you're right. six months Wow. Yeah.
Speaker: Well, happy September, everyone. girl us yet we're living in the past but exactly everyone welcome to the best month there is this is actually kind of getting into my Bye.
Speaker: fixated. we'll give it to non media fixation What's your non -media fixation? Tell me. My non -media fixation is Like... I've really been thinking about how many um leos there are in my life um yes ellen included and love a leo and apparently i love a leo apparently that's good i love it i love a virgo so well there we go there we go yeah no and it's funny like i guess for whatever it's worth like disclaimer
Speaker: I don't know all about that. stuff I am really happy I just like saying that exactly exactly it's just you know zeitgeist wise I do I do be knowing a little bit um and it's just very apparent to me because in my family we've had we have three birthdays in my family in August um that's so crazy yeah In my immediate family. And so I'm just like, well, dang, like everyone, everyone's here. Here is a Leo and everyone.
Speaker: um And I guess I love you all. i got yeah That works. But that being said. What comes after Leo season?
Speaker: is Virgo season. and um And I love September and I'm just excited. So happy September. and um be good to the virgos in your life as we move forward i'll work on it i'll see about that yeah yes yes buy them some stationery or something yeah i was just thinking Again, truly, I know nothing about astrology, like nothing at all. But crazy that Virgo season is happening also during back to school and everyone's buying their notebooks. Look at that. Look at how things all work out.
Speaker: Maybe there's something to it, actually. Maybe y 'all are right. get Now that I'm connecting the dots. It's real. Yes. Well, yes. Well, yes. And back to school season is always my favorite. September is always my favorite month. I mean, it's lovely.
Speaker: It just works. It just works. I was watching um Amy Poehler's Podcast? Okay. Amy Poehler is my birthday twin. We went to birthday school together. After those of you who don't know, if Amy Poehler shares your birthday, you went to birthday school with them. Yes, yes. And you should actually have known that.
Speaker: yeah stole that i made that we no i said we need oh i thought i thought we stole that from um front of the pod bridget That's yours? That was me. This is yours? This is Ellen original.
Speaker: Well even better! Yeah. um yes I went to birthday school with Amy Poehler love her down and she had Kiki Palmer on her podcast um I think most recently I think this past week um who's also Virgo so fun and it was a hoot I was watching and I was like oh my girls I was like I'm right at home I love this um It was great. But yeah.
Speaker: That's my non -media fixation. that i don't know yeah i guess astrology whatever astrology a lot of good things yeah um okay what's your non -media oh dumb i kind of also have a concept kind of experiencing it A lot lately. And so I've been thinking about a lot. about it a lot. when there are like birds inside?
Speaker: Yeah.
Speaker: Like at the mall that it or like I was at the bus station and they, there are like pigeons in there, like a lot of pigeons in the New York Port Authority. How did they get down there? Because they're all in the basement.
Speaker: How did they get there? How are you going to get them out? They took the escalator. It's an escalator like every other New Yorker.
Speaker: I love it. I just like, I think about it so much. i you know How are they eating? How did they get out? how do they get out with i like when they're around honestly i'm not like the biggest fan of birds sometimes they freak me out but like when they're inside i'm like that's my i don't know my comrade like that's my buddy well do you remember that just reminded me um freshman year we lived in Like. Just.
Speaker: the world's worst dorm. of all time. um and one day i went to go use the bathroom our shared bathroom for our floor and there was just a sign on the door that said, don't open bird inside. I do remember that.
Speaker: Oh my goodness. He was probably like one year older than us. Just opened all the windows. closed the door and was like hoping for the best.
Speaker: That nightmare bathroom, bro. Oh my goodness. It was so bad. It was bad. It was like quite often. I experienced quite a few times. Like raining from the shower light from the lights There would be water pouring out of the...
Speaker: light fixtures in the ceiling that can't be good like that can't be safe yeah you leave the bathroom into the narrowest hallway you've ever seen with Like truly a hallway built for one one foot traveler. like what in the world oh my goodness like just like not ada a compliant at all, truly in a scary way. Yeah.
Speaker: Just do that. hey so like that was we i don't know I don't know what I was trying to say. we Like, we we were born in there, you know? Yeah, exactly. We were born in there. some Some say. There was a big... um Sign. Do you remember this? Maybe our sophomore year?
Speaker: That someone put in their window that said, like, name of the dorm breeds savages. And I'm like, yeah. It does. Yeah. pretty much for a little bit Yeah. Yeah. appeal That was a good one. Goop Hill Dorm. Dorm goopy barwork read savages Goop Goop. Yeah, we lived in a dorm called him cold Goop. Called Goop.
Speaker: And like even worse, it was G -O -U -P. Exactly. Doop. goop yeah full flavor on it maybe i'm fixing it on goop well i can't it lives inside You want to talk about all these other calls of boredom. You're like, oh. We were in goop. We were in goop.
Speaker: Yeah. goop was the worst one we did and we met each other and so love was born in goop yeah yeah second episode in a row uh reminiscing about fordham oh well fordham just so much happened there it was a special place it is a special place so maybe screw birds like that's my fixation now i'm really thinking about goop goop goop oh freshman year dorms yeah to be 18 and in the creepiest building of all time exactly exactly
Speaker: But with friends. Yeah, with friends. Not does it make it worth it. It doesn't make it worth it in my opinion. I would do it all again. I would not. um No, it's okay. um Yeah. damn Yeah. Good job.
Speaker: Okay. I guess we'll just jump right into it. Yeah, i'm right into it. I guess. I always say that as if there's, like, anything else to do. I don't know why I always phrase it like that. How did you go first, Joelle? With my media fixations. Okay, okay. I have feel like I've been...
Speaker: watching and listening to a lot over the last Yeah, I guess since two weeks just say this month off the top of my head watching some new tv shows so um i've seen a couple of movies one of the tv shows i'm watching right now is furious on hulu Yes, you're good at this.
Speaker: it's a crime drama um emmy rosin Rosam? Mmmmm! Um... um of of course shameless fame of course the um exactly exactly exactly yeah exactly she kind of killed it but um yeah she's in there but there's a lot of great performances and other actors in there really enjoying it, but it's very intense.
Speaker: um it's about it's like a crime drama about like trafficking and stuff and there's like a female serial killer and stuff and like it's a whole thing um but it's super good it's super good so i'm enjoying that i think it's almost Done.
Speaker: I think there's an episode that should be coming out. Tonight? Anyways, there's some other TV. Oh, I started watching Widows Bay. on Apple TV. People were talking about that for a while, like maybe a month, two months ago, about how it's so fantastic. um and i was like yeah why not because i actually i realized i had access to apple tv but the thing is that it's about it's like a it's both
Speaker: like a comedy and a horror series okay and i was like watching it i was like girl i don't even like being scared for real i was like why is this scaring me i was like it's making me laugh and it's really good and it's interesting but then i'm like i don't want to see a killer clown like i just i don't actually vibe with that same kind of vibe not at all actually but whatever um i was reading a book this week where Like...
Speaker: i don't know i started it kind of i kind of i guess knew it was a scary book it was like a horror book but i didn't really think about it And as I was reading, I was like, what the hell? is this? it's a scary book I was reading A Fig for All the Devils by C .S. Fritz.
Speaker: And it like it was really good. but freaky i didn't like it it's like everyone's gonna do that to my myself i'm like why are you watching or reading something scary you don't like i know i know and that's like i don't know maybe i have more to say about that because i feel like I've been engaging more with like horror and stuff this year in general yeah i usually do which is weird well'll tell but mm -hmm Nevertheless.
Speaker: interesting show maybe i'll have more to talk about once i actually like finish it but it's fun watching tv shows and then um yeah a couple of movies whatever one movie i do want to like talk about as a fixation but My first and foremost fixation.
Speaker: Is of course. lost weekend by phoebe bridges which came out last week. Last Friday, Friday the 14th. like we're back yeah and we're so back a fixation of mine as well of course yes yes i felt like that would be um together and Ugh. god bless god bless bg british i think it's so good i'm just so glad to see her again i know um we both just to like recap we both
Speaker: went to the little pop -up shows in our respective places quite serendipitously. How nice is that? We both got so lucky with that. Yeah, right? And so we've been kind of on this journey of getting ready for the album. um And.
Speaker: Yeah. Now that it's here, I've been listening to it up. Down, sideways. um And I think it's... really really fantastic let me think about like what i really wanted to Mm -hmm Like...
Speaker: I don't know. I feel like main headline Is yes, that's great. I think the production is so good. So interesting. So like. appropriately evolved from her Ciao!
Speaker: from everything else you know like we're in it deep so we like i feel like i have all this like um knowledge stored up here that's sometimes hard to like fully articulate but yeah yes very like Like it's new, but it's not like super distant, super like strange. I just think it's all.
Speaker: It came across so well, yeah sonically. It's so, so cool. It has so many cool... moments on it. um And. it's kind of long but i like how she like breaks it up with the instrumental tracks and like yeah I think my favorite, like.
Speaker: I was making a joke with with some friends. I was texting them when it like first came out where I was like... gonna have to like when i was first doing my first full read through i was like jesus i was like about to just ruin my day just just right off the bat yeah um which i also think is like not not Like. understand why why i would make that joke because the cv bridges after all but yeah um I honestly think the the album itself has a lot of little like moments of also like joy for lack of a better word um or some amount of like
Speaker: happiness and dare i say acceptance yeah there were a couple of moments at least i don't know if that was necessarily the intention but that like i interpret it as pretty hopeful Oh yeah. which i really enjoyed right even i'm like hearing it the first time i i know i like texted my friends some of um like first thoughts. that I had.
Speaker: I was like, I think. Could be wrong, because I also... First listen. I'm not good at interpreting lyrics. I cannot hear. um I really need to read as I listen, but.
Speaker: Oh, sure. like so i I'm not super sure I'm right, but I think that was a pretty hopeful album. case of like guys Obviously it was sad as always and about grief and this and that, but also like.
Speaker: There was a lot of hope in there there was a lot of love in a way yeah right it was kind of maybe new for her really Yeah, I think so, right? um I think that like...
Speaker: Oh, I was trying to say a before. a little bit. a song that's not as hopeful even though it still kind of has that little like tinge to it um But I think one of the first like kind of like more production moments, more than like lyric moments. um what is in kill me when it does that like Kind of that. I don't know I keep wanting to say just like bass drop, but that seems like silly to say basically that um because I love that song as one of my like favorites right off the top as well. um And.
Speaker: Yeah, I was, like, cooking something or I was baking something. And, like, literally, like, almost dropped. I was like, what was that? I, like, almost dropped the thing that I was holding. And I, like, looked at my phone. I was like, those like what is she doing on this album? um so and it was just cool that was like more yeah i guess of like a production music instrumental choice and even like a lyric that made me like truly almost like drop something yeah so so cool but then of course obviously the writing is awesome as well and it's just she just
Speaker: she has a way i love her Sense of humor. Yeah. Dare I say? which i feel like yeah has definitely come up before like she just had you know it's kind of signature in her writing but like One of them that I like.
Speaker: really love like i don't know just julie generally made me laugh i was like girl you're crazy um it's in bobby the line where she is like If she didn't like either one of my friends, I'd kill them. i'm like I was like.
Speaker: I was like, you're too much. yeah You're too much. die um because i just i'm like it's just such a like fucked up thought yeah like yeah say it like i don't know it's hyperbole essentially but like what if type of love you know exactly Yeah.
Speaker: Yeah, I really like that song. i really do because it's her it's a love song it's like an actual Yeah, I don't know if she's had like a straight -up love song before?
Speaker: right not like that at least yeah without the kind of despair. Yeah. well actually I still like that it has like an angst about it. But... It's just that.
Speaker: It's the same thing. that low -key i was listening to right before we listened to like this um right before we started recording i listened to got my daily dose listening to stupid song by olivia rodrigo yeah But I'm like, it's that saying, it's just kind of like a frenzied.
Speaker: Kind of being like, like I literally like love you. Like, what the fuck? is going on.
Speaker: The lyric. This could be the end of wanting. It's just so like... Fucked up. yeah i How romantic!
Speaker: exactly i love that oh my god and then if i'm not mistaken at the end of it is like this like recording whatever that's like talking about the lottery right or it's talking is it is that what it's talking about it's like this voiceover that's saying like you've been chosen in our lucky dip this month to win a prize or giveaway of 2 .5 million dollars and a brand new mercedes men's whatever um in my like mind she's it's like basically being like oh you've like won the lottery yeah wow you like you've gotten this chance.
Speaker: And I was like, you're... Phoebe! Phoebe! You're too good. You're too good. You're too good. Also, I feel like there's been... i almost i don't want to give too much air to this but there's lot been a lot of interesting interpretations of the album or at least there's been discourse i don't even know if i want to take it as like whatever there's a discourse about the album and maybe it's focused first of all it's like It's an album that's a lot.
Speaker: primarily about grief. Mm hmm. i think do it and going about in discourse being like It's male centered. is a little strange to me um and grief about one specific male person yeah yeah yeah right and But I also think that.
Speaker: The one thing. that is true about it is yes that it's examining I think multiple relationships that she has in her life or has had in the past. however long but basically this is only trying to say that i was trying to i would like to propose a more like integrated interpretation of the album because what i also think people are missing the opportunity to talk about That's how it's also.
Speaker: of all these relationships that she's like analyzing there's still consistently this discussion about her relationship to fame. and Right? yeah And I was like, Really thinking about...
Speaker: how punisher the entire idea of a punisher as she's described it apparently i don't even know from where but i know that she's described as such is like being in that position of like being a fan punisher as a fan and how she's also felt like she's like taking up that position and you know this actual song is about her like fan fandom of um Elliot Smith and like whatever.
Speaker: and Yeah, I think you can like carry that into this album And. Also... understand it from the point of view of like yeah she's been gone for so long as well and it obviously was a very like there's all these reasons for the break, but like also part of it was just like, you know, you. tour and you do all this stuff for the public for the public for the public and then you take a break and i think there's just like way more than i've seen people at least really like talk about um
Speaker: about her relationship to fame. And I think it's interesting to think about all these relationships that she's talking about. Whether it's with past boyfriend, father, current partner, boyfriend. and and stuff also and with like fame as kind of
Speaker: in that they're all stuffed in one album um as all this kind of like analogous kind of forms like i think about even in bobby when she like says like i um like i only exist if you're watching or something like that and like that kind of like snapped me into it i think the first song in general like sets that up again way more than i think people are really like
Speaker: and latching onto for whatever reason i guess it's more like interesting and stuff and somewhat parasocial which is funny because it's also like whatever um to talk about all the like what it means for her like personal life and her like interpersonal relationships but um yeah like the outside that starting track like the first one she's obviously she's talking about like her father and like being at a funeral literally um but then like straight into the second Verse is talking about like.
Speaker: being on stage in front of a crowd. That was one of the first lyrics that I was like, damn where she was like i like i jumped into a crowd and they never put me back down or let me back down or something like that. um Yeah. I think that there's... a lot there never going back again like the fact that it ends with that oh my goodness when people want to bring up
Speaker: a like voice like recording or something like that an album and they're gonna get me every single time get me every time this isn't even the only like i was listening to Raven Linnaeus album and it's not even like a sad one and she like put one in there at like the end of some song i can't remember now exactly but still it's just like It's like, I just love when people do these little moments. It's so nice. And never going back again.
Speaker: to just like further this point it's like um the voiceover or whatever the recording that she includes is her dad talking about like her being off and being like a rock star or something like that and how that like takes up all her time Yeah, I think that...
Speaker: is really interesting to consider, I think. in that same vein and then I'll kind of like approach wrapping up sorry i'm just like going a mile a minute because ive know because i have i have the same yeah Um, is probably my favorite song of the moment haunted especially because it's like a little in the classic Phoebe kind of like switch up you think a song called haunted is going to be something you know
Speaker: haunting she has like a song called kill me and you're like well damn this is a song called haunted and you're like what's it gonna be here we go again um But no. Brilliant song. Wonderful song.
Speaker: about in my interpretation in my opinion kind of like developing healing in this relationship to like Performing. um and and kind of having to live your life in such a way that it's somewhat for others and also something for yourself. um And.
Speaker: I just think it's so good. It's so good. Especially that. um the like second verse um second verse i think i think the second verse and the line specifically that is like um going from putting on my makeup stage up whatever and she's if you're gonna make a wish you better be specific because you're gonna have to live it every day and i think that like encapsulates Exactly. What?
Speaker: is maybe... the thesis of like that idea across the album. You're so right. She's like, this was what I wanted. Sorry. And if you go on Spotify, the like video that goes along with it.
Speaker: Have you seen this? Yes, no I know exactly what you're talking about. little Phoebe like playing outside. I was like, I have like chills. I was like, Jesus. I think that's great. And I think it also fits into.
Speaker: a lot of albums at the moment. A lot mainly from like... Women. in their 30s as well yeah something about it um but between like charlie i'm thinking mainly of like the charlie xcx album that i listen to uh music fashion film And then Ariana Grande's album.
Speaker: Petal. that all are kind of at this moment in time talking about something about their relationship to fame. um and kind of how they like are navigating it and i think this is something i've like learned enough from like lost cultureistas and talked about this before and i was listening to their episode this week actually they were bringing up something similar. um
Speaker: but they've kind of talked about how like that is always like a kind of era in like pop girls i especially um That usually goes with some version of being like, I'm a show girl. This is the circus. And here I am. And like this, you know, they kind of do it in that way. um yeah there's definitely like this strand currently in some of these albums coming out where they are Contending in very different ways I would say across those albums. I don't want to get that deep into like comparing and contrasting but
Speaker: I definitely think that in a way Phoebe's is like the most settled in a sense in a let and the least. stressed, most accepting. Yeah, no, I think you're you're absolutely the right.
Speaker: in a way in a way that i really can appreciate because you know i have my whole thing with parasociality where i'm like Yes, it's the fans, but it's the people it's the people who are... the object of fandom as well, who are experiencing a weird relationship. I'm i'm always intrigued in how they also like...
Speaker: frame. it so i find it interesting that phoebe bridges in this showing has been a little bit more on the side of like yeah like i i i can acknowledge that i wished for this to a certain step and so next is like how do you accept it and navigate it appropriately all right however it works.
Speaker: So those are my feelings in a way. I love that. The album and the bigger... yeah themes and ideas with it. um Yeah. Yeah. I felt like Addison Rae this week. i that thing She's like, music can be so special. I love music. and Like the multiple tweets. yeah oh Yeah. I love that. And I'm so glad you had so much to say, because honestly, like I.
Speaker: absolutely loved the album obviously but i'm just not like a music person. So I feel like I'm not. as good at putting my thoughts into words or even like pulling out thoughts like that about.
Speaker: songs because i can't hear the damn lyrics have to that's real i just don't know what they're saying um mm -hmm yeah I think my my standout that I haven't been able to stop listening to. um the governor's waltz i cannot turn that one off i'm just such a sucker for like a it's a ah ah breakup song like and that's kind of that's what that one is i think yeah um Mm hmm.
Speaker: It's just so... And we make a cameo. Oh my God, you're right, we do. Because we were at the governor's ball. We were at that governor's ball. Yes, exactly. But yeah, sorry. Where she's hiding in the bathroom, apparently. um Yeah, I don't even I don't know.
Speaker: I feel like The main thing I want to say about that is just repeating her lyrics back. um God, let's see how long we can go without touching. Like, are you kidding? Let's see how long we can go without dogging. Let's see how far I can run without st stopouting stopping. Woo!
Speaker: and she said it And she said it. It's actually sick. It's actually sick. It's sickening. It's so like. Ah! Yeah. then like Being myself wasn't easy. do with me as a
Speaker: I said that's a crazy line. okay Brilliant line as well. But like... So what is it? the um I know you'd never actually think about jumping but do it for me.
Speaker: flat Yeah. you promised you'd never leave me but do it for me like Wanting. wanting you to Because you can't be the one to... Yeah. Mm -mm. It's too much. It's too much. First listen. I can run without stopping.
Speaker: Yeah. I said, girl, girl. And that's the thing that like. That's so real. Always gets me, Phoebe. She's just like... So...
Speaker: Honest? That it's almost terrible. I can barely even imagine. god I don't know what to do with it. Except you just have to sit there. Yeah.
Speaker: and just kind of like feel it along with her. and then maybe relate but like you're just like whoa A lot of this album, too, was like... um I don't know, being generally happy. and not knowing what to do with it or being like comfortable in your unhappiness because that's what you're used to and that's what you're Speak on it. Yeah. and like I don't know. My interpretations obviously are not...
Speaker: Like what she's necessarily saying I wanted like say that obviously the way that i'm hearing things is not Like, I don't wanna, I don't know her life. i don't Right. can too Whatever.
Speaker: but just um What was I even... saying to like it seemed like a lot of It was. um Like... Not knowing but feeling like you don't know how to be loved feeling like you're in a relationship where you are loved and you...
Speaker: Not being able to handle it, not being able to stand it. Yeah. What? Do it for me. yeah I know you'd never think about jumping. but do it for me because i can't do it i can't be the one to jump so you have to do it i'm begging you to leave me because I can't do it.
Speaker: yeah and that's who knows what the hell if that's what she's saying that's what i'm hearing and no i Oh, my God. Yeah, yeah, yeah. No, it's true and I think it matches up.
Speaker: But what you're saying with, like, Lost Weekend, Lost Weekend. Reprise. um and now I'm gonna blank on the lyric a little bit too, but like Like, I love you and um and you'll never forgive me for that or something like that. and then um you know me and i'll never forgive you for that yes and the last line of the album Which again, also comes back around to being like, this is also about like.
Speaker: being famous and beloved in a way for your talent she says surviving my talent before i get shot and you're like okay right um my gift surviving my gift before i get shot whatever um you is it you love me and i'll never let you forget Like you love me and I'll never let you forget. Not yet.
Speaker: i think that's the last the very last line of the album and i was like you see how that like connects it all like it connects it all all it's the grief and the this and the also like obviously like new love but like trying to figure that out yeah but like you couldn't handle it last time like what's Who's to say you're going to be able to handle it this time? Yes, exactly. I think it's just, again, brilliantly crafted. You love me and I'll never let you forget. She's like, I know I left.
Speaker: And you know you love me, though. Yeah, and it's that we could go so many ways because she's talking to the fans, but also like that's. That could be talking to the person that loved you that you had to leave because you didn't know how to handle it. like it could even not It could even be not completely in her own voice as well. Exactly. be like a you know like what she's also hearing from other people you know like that type of thing exactly Which is all... all part of it it could i love A lot of her, a lot of her lyrics can be
Speaker: interpreted so many different ways and i i absolutely love that because that's like it's it can be universal then it can apply to everyone and like it can be my life it can be your life it can be i love it i think that's what makes it great like i think she is such a prime example of making the personal universal that the or the fact that like the personal is universal like she does that because so much stuff is yeah again she's like incredibly honest incredibly raw about like her situation her feelings
Speaker: And then... crafts it so artfully in such a way exactly in such a way that you're like Damn. It applies to everyone. god Us explaining how art should work. yeah but like she's figured it out she knows how to work she knows how to make really good art yeah she does she's just she's just fantastic um yeah sorry we spent so much oh i guess this is a joint fixation yes yeah yeah absolutely yeah a big fine Yeah.
Speaker: and um i don know I have one other big one. Yeah. All right. Please give it to me. I know you've also seen. I have. I just wanted to talk about it. Went to the movies. Yay!
Speaker: movies onto the movies on thursday and i went to see um teenage sex and death at camp Miasma. but yes Yeah, you got it. You got it in one. Yes. Directed by Jane Schonbrunn.
Speaker: Um... I'm Hannah Einbender and Julian Anderson. And I. Loved it. I thought it was really, really. Great. I know. I said, I know you saw it too. yeah um But yeah, i love like I was really excited to see it, don't get me wrong. And I was having those feelings where I was like, I think I think i will like it already. You know what I mean? So I don't want to go in there and just assume it's going to be great. but I think I would like it. other excited for it um because I'm a Hannah Eimbender.
Speaker: Bender binder. I can never remember which way it is. um Truther. Love hacks. um I've been rocking with her. for a while now i love her I love her bad. And.
Speaker: Yeah, it was just super. We're super excited to see it. and But in a way, I still like liked it even more than I thought I would. like I was just so... I don't know how how to explain it. Like I was just watching, I was like, this was really fun and like interesting. really funny
Speaker: good and like crazy to just like look at and take in as well like there was something it was so beautiful Mmhmm! I thought like all the I guess like step design choices and like the lighting and everything that I was like, you guys are going crazy. So this is so interesting. table yeah um and just so many different like between like the painted backgrounds and the like I just think that it's...
Speaker: It was cool. to have so many different like textures yeah i don't know i guess to take it on the screen color and the texture were yeah crazy it was so cool um A bit like truly visionary in that sense, where I was like, this feels really special. You know what I mean? I was like, this is cool. um and Yeah, I don't know. I just think it was just like...
Speaker: Booth. Kind of like smart. And like. Deep but also like not that serious in another way And it just makes me kind of like marvel that like a a film could be so many things. Like it was so.
Speaker: interesting like i was genuinely like laughing at certain parts and then being like oh god that's some of like the gore but it wasn't actually scary scary no which i was grateful for yeah right especially watching it by myself right i'm like it makes it enjoyable a little more enjoyable for me where i'm like okay i don't actually have to worry about it being scary um But then I think the like...
Speaker: I know I feel like there's a lot. you can like take away from it but I do think there's like an emotional story there that's also very like very well executed and like compelling and I think Spoiler spoiler Not to get into many details, but spoiler spoiler the like Final scene. basically.
Speaker: um after the like kind of more humorous like run through the woods but like once they actually like get into that room and into that scene I thought it was like... I was like taken aback by like...
Speaker: i didn't actually like cry but i was like seeing i was like i'm like holding my breath like i was like this is really affecting and i kind of understand the i think i did cry honestly right like maybe not at that scene i know i cried at some point now i'm not remembering but yeah but i feel like Yeah.
Speaker: both of their performances but especially like just The... very kind of like embodied like I know maybe it's just because like I just like felt it like the amount of like fear and anticipation and like uncertainty that she was feeling in that moment.
Speaker: It was just really well acted and like so... Yeah. Like. whatever like the the analogy the center analogy there that they are working with the like sex and death part um and trying to kind of like As I've been thinking about like get.
Speaker: over onto the other side of that like barrier of fear and to actually like experience your like desire and stuff like that. Like... I was like, whoa. I guess that's all. I was just thinking, I was like...
Speaker: Oh, whoa. Okay. like we taking Good job, guys. God. Yeah. I was like wow. the like repeated, this is just play.
Speaker: Like. So we can play as much as we need. We can take it as far as we need to because you can always turn it off. like Yeah, yeah. A good way to also... Yeah, like talk about consent. I guess maybe to simplify it as well.
Speaker: of yeah and being able to I guess the most way, like, trust yourself and, like, be encouraged to, like, listen to yourself. Exactly. I liked the, yeah, because there's no judgment here. Like.
Speaker: let Let the shame go. Let the shame leave you. It's just desire. Like it's just. Let's just play. just yeah do what you got to do because If you take it too far, you can always turn it off. Is that even the line? If it gets too real. I'm sorry. If it gets too real, you can always turn it off. You can always turn it off. Yeah. Love that.
Speaker: Ugh! yeah yeah I just thought it really it really it really worked for me Yeah.
Speaker: And I love the lie. Like there's a hole at the bottom of the lake where the movies come from. but like i don't like mix And I was like, I feel like I'm being entranced. yeah I was also trying to like. I love a repeat it. like i love right and they did this a lot with this they did yeah yeah i love that yeah um and really lets you like hang on to them like yeah but you're like yes yes but i also but that line was really like i was really trying to Maybe because it is so like.
Speaker: there's a hole in the bottom like where the movies come from and i was like what does it mean but also it's like but you're showing you what it means it's like i understand but like what does the mean mean yeah um and from a mix that like i was just trying to think about it and i read an interview like on letterbox like i don't know i could maybe like send it a few years but whatever um where
Speaker: yeah the director jane schoenberg was talking about it but i was really thinking about it and i was like yeah there's a whole other problem like where the movies come from and i was like writing i was like um Morning paging, whatever. Call back. Bye -bye. And I was really thinking about how it works.
Speaker: it works poetically at least in my mind and maybe around somewhat of what the movie is also saying about like Where. things come from yeah and I just thought and it might be interesting to take it as like there's something deep inside you That.
Speaker: Like... I don't know. That is like the source of all of this, whether it's like desire or passion or creativity. It's desire, yeah. It's stuff like that, you know? And it is desire in a really real way. But yeah, now that I say it out loud, I'm like, maybe it is more simple. But I just, for some reason, I was really trying to be like that. Yeah, it could be a lot of things. Yeah. Right? I mean, they were safe.
Speaker: Like he is desire, but yeah it could be. Yeah. interpretation goes many ways. It could be anything. that It doesn't have to be as straightforward as they were saying. Yeah, I just liked it as like...
Speaker: I liked the desire made this movie. Like this is a movie made by desire. Desire created this whole thing. i'm like yeah yeah man how fun like I loved it exactly exactly and i think it just yeah i think it really speaks to i mean in a way anything with this podcast which i'm always doing i'm like um yeah um i guess i care but it's like
Speaker: yeah and sometimes it is hard to explain sometimes people aren't gonna like like why like why you do things that you're passionate about yes or why you always like have this like thing like thrumming being like you're like i don't know i just like care i just want to talk about it like damn i'd love that I'm just doing something. like there's No, you're right. Like, I don't know. in you sometimes exactly it's just in you um you just need to make it real you need to play you need to exactly exact movies are ah
Speaker: coming from the hole in the bottom of the lake so exactly exactly exactly let's exactly Watch. I'm saying it over and over and over again. It's the whole problem, like where the exact leads come from.
Speaker: If it gets too real, can always turn it off. I'm trying. In that context, that makes no sense. but um And the one other thing that I realized it made me think about was. um The movie, nope.
Speaker: which i look yes yeah no bit okay maybe you understand what i'm saying yeah yeah yeah um Especially because... i was thinking about and i could be making this up i could there's a part of it i was like wait i I'm just saying this. I don't know. like whatever um i think such a central part of this movie as well again there's kind of like all these intersecting bits of it.
Speaker: but it's about like yeah connection to oneself but quite literally like watching oneself and kind of going back and forth how Yeah, the movie in general and... Yeah, Jane Schoenbrand is like trying to also kind of talk about the horror genre um and some of these like tropes throughout it. It's kind of not entirely my like.
Speaker: like I'm not as familiar. Yeah. But, point still stood. I was trying to... Again, once again, kind of understand, like, what's this whole, like, lake thing? What's with this whole, like, wall -on -wall -on -the -lake thing? and i was kind of thinking about how like the lake itself especially when they like did the hole and like the hole was like glowing or whatever i look like an eye A little bit.
Speaker: And... In the same sense that it kind of like an eye and there's kind of the shot from the eye that they kept on using with like little death in it. um And.
Speaker: also what's the other part oh and i was also thinking about like some of the shots when they're like watching the movie and like the like film light or something like that like i i was just like picking up all these different things about that are a little bit more along the lines of Yeah, this idea of like...
Speaker: the camera, the eye, watching, watching oneself and Also, I guess like what desire. and stuff gets mediated through or like a relationship with like desire and sex and stuff like that gets mediated through because that's also like a big thing with the chris character which is like oh well like i kind of just like go off in my mind and like maybe sometimes become the final girl and like like
Speaker: and just like see myself more as. this different character, these types of things. And I was just thinking about how. in that way it has this very like obvious commentary about how movies and maybe like more so like hollywood as a structure and stuff like that has has such a role.
Speaker: in constructing our like sense of self as well in these different ways yeah it just made me think of nope and how nope which i think is one of the times i'll say like somewhat underrated i or i will argue like i find nope's an underrated movie because i really liked nope when i saw it um and one of the things i really liked about it was that Almost similarly, it is this kind of general like commentary metaphor about... Like.
Speaker: hollywood also kind of using the horror genre but a little bit more like space sci -fi monster genre definitely um that is yeah kind of like commenting on the consumptive nature of like filming. yeah about Hollywood um and the idea of like what gets like yeah like consumed gobbled up the like culture and the people and stuff like that that get gobbled up and overlooked um like jean jacket the big monster i think is understood is meant to be understood as like
Speaker: i think some of the shots when they show like the inside of jean jacket it's supposed to look somewhat like a camera reel or something like that like there's something Uh huh. be making that up in a way but no that sounds familiar yes it's supposed to be a bit like be almost like a literal camera. mm -hmm That this thing like sucking people up. Yeah.
Speaker: And. Oh, yeah. And of course, the like. whole thing that perturbed my parents watching it. the like monkey yeah Yeah. I don't like monkeys. That's the thing with me. I'm afraid of them. Real monkey fear.
Speaker: Yes. Yeah. monkeys um yeah that was Yeah, I know. It made me think of Nope. almost kind of... alongside just as another i guess i guess another movie that is kind of using the same a little bit like horror genre trope yeah stuff to also talk about metaphorically, like...
Speaker: the medium of like film and the idea of like cameras and watching and what effect that has. We're kind of connecting back to Phoebe right now. like
Speaker: Whoa! Maybe there's a through line at the bottom of the lake. Maybe there's a through line. like Yeah. consumption Wait.
Speaker: Which is also maybe the theme of our podcast. So maybe. u hu Maybe later. Hello. Maybe it all ties together. Maybe we're also being super, like, have meta commentary. Exactly. Incredibly meta episode. We're included in the through line. you know just You as a listener are consuming our consumption of media about consumption. Hello.
Speaker: Yeah. And well, hey. Media on media on media on media. Exactly. We are like nothing new. like Boom, boom, boom, boom, boom. No, you're so right. That's interesting. Right?
Speaker: There's something there. That's not something I put together before at all, but yeah just hearing you talk about it, it was like, this is the conversation we just had. i was like hey yeah I mean, I guess there's a way in which.
Speaker: Everything is surveillance, isn't it? Yeah. Hey -o! Hey -o! Hey! We live as if we were watched. Us actively filming ourselves. Exactly. Oh my god. Yeah. When no one asked us to. But! We're just putting it out into the world. Exactly. The movie's got to come from somewhere. We got to put them out. They're just being...
Speaker: Little Death is handing it to us. We just have to wait for the ones posting it. Mm -hmm. Ooh, weird.
Speaker: Yeah. Hmm. Okay. That's making me feel normal and like live like I'm a real person and living in reality. Oh, okay. Am I? If it gets too real, Joelle. He shuts the laptop. Episode over.
Speaker: Um... oh wow okay interesting but yeah those were mine that's my completely commandeered um take or yeah running away with some of these things it's a dual episode no because i also this of my my things as well yeah oh i did did you did you enjoy it i do movie the movie i like it yeah i really liked it i think honestly yeah It was one of those ones. This is me being vulnerable. Um, where I did, I enjoyed it and I took it in and I like felt like I understood it, but I. did have to come home and google
Speaker: Camp Miasma explained. Just to be sure I was picking up on all of it. And like i I really like reading like a little essay or something, breaking down a movie after. Of course, yeah. I'm never picking up on all of it. like i don't get it all you just don't get everything on first watch rarely even a movie girl like me um fun this un it Exactly. well i really not um I really liked it, yeah. yeah i really liked it it was not my typical genre and it wasn't super what i was expecting um Bye.
Speaker: have seen obviously i saw the tv glow also by jane schoenbrunn um That movie? I loved that movie. um Yeah. Super affecting also.
Speaker: mm -hmm just insane that was one that stayed with me for a while that was one that like just oh my god it was yeah I want... I feel bad because I've, maybe I've mentioned this before. I watched on a plane. So I feel bad just in the sense where I'm like, I really feel like I should like sit down. You don't always get on it. Yeah. I think that one deserves a rewatch. I watched it. Oh my God, is there TV in that?
Speaker: Oh my God, she is. Oh my God, she is. Like for a blip? Look at the way that everything comes together. Wow. For a moment, she has a song on the soundtrack. um And Jane Schonbrunn directed the... night shift video oh my god i don't know that movie and I haven't watched that recently at all. So I don't know why I'm really thinking so much about it now, but like.
Speaker: The resounding... There is still time. I think about that shot. all the time Hmm. There is still time. There is always time. Like. There's still time.
Speaker: you can still do everything starting now you can change everything about yourself you have to you can be who you are you can do What do we have to do? There is still time. Yeah. oh my god yeah like getting to like the horror of not being yourself and being who you.
Speaker: Need to be? Mm -hmm is Denying yourself? Even, like, on this one, denying desire, like... Yeah. you gotta go all in you just have to do it like you have to be it Yeah. Yeah.
Speaker: yeah I love, I love. Really good. and like beautiful again like that one too is so gorgeous the texture and the colors and the yes yes and like just in terms of like shots and things that just yeah i don't know are like very quietly evocative i think in both in both of those movies they have that little shot of like uh like a young person like like just like staring at the tv yeah and just like that relationship is something that
Speaker: That's real. I relate to. But like in a joking way, but also like. Also in a real way. Yeah. That is. Like seeing yourself. Seeing yourself in. The... thing that you're taking in like in that that representation seeing yourself.
Speaker: but for the first time and like figuring out who you are because of it a little bit. exactly i was like it even works on the like even simple well simple level of people being like oh this was my like um sexual awakening kind of thing you know like that conversation that people have yeah um and how often it's like yeah at some
Speaker: media so many that you're watching that you're always like yeah wait one second uh -huh no you're right you're like wow i really love princess diaries too if you starring anne hathaway and chris fine I love that scene when they're in the closet. That's awesome.
Speaker: like that's the way i actually have no idea what you're talking about i need to re -watch that movie sorry but I love that. I believe you. I'm with you. Their chemistry with - um Awesome. So great stuff stuff. The other movie that I have.
Speaker: been I don't know thinking about recently. um Kind of related, now that I think about it. like on a very different kind of, in a very different kind of way, but it's the 10th anniversary of La La Land. Oh, okay. And so it's like back in some theaters recently, which I didn't see it in theaters and I probably won't have the chance to, but I've just been thinking about it a lot. And I rewatched it pretty recently, honestly, if we're being a ring honest, not this week, but. um Another one kind of about...
Speaker: A movie about the movies. A movie about media. yes You're right. And that one is just another gorgeous color. And about music. color you know Yeah, and music, yeah. And that it's just beautiful, too. Something gorgeous to look at and to take in. and Obviously horrifically upsetting. um And my boy, my boy Ryan Gosling.
Speaker: Obviously killing it. City of stars. A little bit, what is there to say about La La Land that hasn't been said? so like Yeah, I really like La La Land. I think it's a very, very nice movie.
Speaker: Yeah. Another one about kind of... making me think about. The Lost Weekend a little bit with the relationshipiness that didn't work out but maybe should have or could have in another life um of it all.
Speaker: mm -hmm Yeah. feeling And the despair of that. But but there's love in a good way. Exactly. Yeah. The love that still lives there. yeah Whatever.
Speaker: Whatever. it doesn't mean anything to us personally Who even cares? Who even cares? No, yeah. This is not about the one that got away.
Speaker: Yeah. Think about that, Libby. Yeah, the song. yeah have people been am i missing and that i feel like there's people been using that on tiktok anyways Yes. Yeah. so good yeah Yeah, I've been hearing that song again lately. Which entirely... Different vibe from the rest of the Arthur line. Katy Perry. Entirely, entirely, entirely. Everybody, drop your favorite Katy Perry song in the comments.
Speaker: Mine's Roar. Ooh, good one. what is literally not no like please no don't record own What's mine?
Speaker: I don't know. I like Teenage Dream. I like the one that got away. i like how go yeah The one that got away is probably the one I listen to the most nowadays. I love the Glee version. The playing at the piano when they any they're in New York version of Teenage Dream.
Speaker: Of course. Of course. of course that's That is a song. That is a performance. yeah That is a vocal performance. You. Make me. You know the rest.
Speaker: You got the rest. whatever i'm gonna have to go listen to that extrapolate as you must it's such a good it's so good let's cover um another anniversary 10 year anniversary that i was um remembering this.
Speaker: week or was no no no oh sorry there's a 10 -year anniversary of something yeah but no yeah ill anniversary Blonde by Frank Ocean. ah One of yes ah personally i think and i think a lot of people think albums of all time Can I say something vulnerable?
Speaker: I discovered that album about a month ago. Sorry. It's really good. And that's okay. It's okay. To be honest. okay Hang on. I've known plenty of the songs.
Speaker: like since then you know what was that 2016 was a junior year of high school yeah so i think i was like Yeah. One was person enough to kind of get into it a bit. But... More so, like I...
Speaker: i'll say my recent history with it of like really engaging with it as an album was really like Uh... now like a year and a half ago yeah i didn't know any of the songs getting of That was not what I was experiencing. I listened to it and I was like, hang on.
Speaker: We'll know about this one.
Speaker: And then I realized I couldn't tell everyone, tell anyone because everyone knew. Yeah. Yeah. Indeed. I have to save you for that one. I have... a bad track record with listening to music we know this this is just not my yeah 2016 that was before we met in 2018 that was before I listened to music I said I don't listen to music You're honestly right on time. Thank you.
Speaker: But yeah. I think I like. yeah i was like where but i think for some reason i just was like i like need to listen to this song so bad at the beginning of like or album at the beginning of like 2024 maybe or something like that and Maybe I have my ears mixed up. I don't know.
Speaker: Either way. brilliant album it was one of the few i have my whole thing where i'm like when i was working on my master's thesis for some reason i literally could only really listen to frank ocean and boy there Ugh.
Speaker: Love. But, like, it was truly but only days the only music the only music with lyrics that I could listen to and not be, like, super distracted for some reason. That's fair. So I was there also playing, like... blonde instrumentals that i could find on spotify and just was like whoosh Woosh. That is kind of crazy. You know, it would have to happen, happen. but just And I love blonde and crazy that it's his. um
Speaker: most recent album that's Full album. um And it still holds, like, it's just, it's. a renewable energy source like it's so good yeah and you just listen to it sometimes you're like But then sometimes you're like.
Speaker: Dance party, why not? This visual medium. That was me dancing. The silence was me dancing a little bit. We have to keep in that long silence. In general, I've been... loving being an album.
Speaker: Listener. person that is that i was talking to once again friend of the pod not to put her on blast but she was like i don't really listen to like full albums after um and i was like yeah i used to be like that and then one day i just decided that i would and Yeah, recently, there's just...
Speaker: To put her back on blast, she and I also had this conversation where she was like, I told Joelle that I don't listen to albums. And she was shocked by that. I feel the same. and I was trying to. I also don't. And I was like. we can't tell you well i was trying to because it's so pretentious and annoying to be like no not that you would never actually be mad but we both were like yeah she was like I don't listen to albums and I was like what And then I tried to pull it back from there. And then I was like, I don't actually think. You were very good at like.
Speaker: You take music very seriously in a way that's... like very beautiful. And it just, I. don't always have that in me. you know so where i'm not always able to like sit down and listen to an album because like It's the way that I also don't listen to podcasts. I get bored. I don't know what you're supposed to do. like like I have trouble focusing on music with that being my only thing. um So I just...
Speaker: i don't know i very rarely like with the phoebe one i have a couple of times like listen to it all the way through in order um But that's also, I've been in contexts where that was allowed. I was, I went to the MSG show. I was able to um see the laser show. So like I really had nothing else to do. I had to listen to it all the way through. I've heard it enough times now where I can listen to it.
Speaker: anyway yeah tattling on her yeah no i get it no and that's the thing i'm like i i do understand but i do think it's just such an enjoyable experience i was just yeah suggesting that she did more often i think it's cool when people because i think that and she was saying i like she was yeah She was...
Speaker: She had high praises for it. It's a great idea. I also think people are just like, really cooking on like putting together an album. more like i don't know i think the art came back or there's something like I think maybe there's kind of a feedback loop if that's the accurate way to...
Speaker: phrase it but like i think there was like a while ago people were complaining about like tiktok music everything's so short and i think in response directly or indirectly.
Speaker: i don't know you've also seen more people more artists especially like pop artists. um Kind of like. Be like, no. we're like doing a whole like experience like like I was thinking I don't listen to Sabrina Carpenter but I think she's done like a good job of like trying to really kind of like construct a whole i and like ah a good experience identity through yeah her albums.
Speaker: She definitely does. And the Beyonce of it all. Yeah. it on a very superficial like surface level. and whatever. I like when a song kind of like flows into the next one. It's very nice. Exactly. that When you've got that album on shuffle. Yeah. So true. I should follow your example and be a little more intentional with the way I'm listening to music, even if I don't know what they're saying sometimes. It's okay.
Speaker: Maybe another offshoot of that though. is kind of this whole like era's idea mm -hmm Which... I don't know, I think there's like pros and cons to it in a way. um of like there's possible i was reading this somewhere or someone was talking about how like but then there maybe is like the pressure though to like have something like very fresh and new and reinvented like each album cycle um and it be kind of kind of leans into that more like commercialization But on the other side of that.
Speaker: or kind of connected to that though i do think there's like maybe another negative of like people treating albums as like things that you're supposed to like really try to like make all these like ties and jumps and be like the holy easter egg of it but yeah but i sometimes i'm a little bit like
Speaker: Also, that's also something that Phoebe does a lot. She likes a callback to her like either sonically or lyrically. like she has a lot of like there's a lot that ties back yeah i think that's like the double bind a little bit too where again i was just kind of like don't like thinking about this in general where i was like but there's to say that like There is a way that like if you are.
Speaker: An artist, like very specifically. putting together your like body of work and you are you you are basically you have remained the same person like there's going to be things that recur and there's going to be things that are fun like are probably fun to write so that it is a reference that is like maybe accurate to like how you've changed and how you've changed in thinking about this. um And so, yeah, like it kind of also just like is probably more naturally occurring.
Speaker: i don't know there's something about like i guess maybe there's maybe something about like gamifying it in a way and the whole like fan experience of people being like oh but it connects to this and i remember this but i also like doing that yeah so it's like And sometimes it is there to kind of.
Speaker: Yeah. get the meaning even deeper yeah i was talking to a friend And... He was telling me his favorites on the Phoebe album. And I was talking about how like haunted was one of my favorites. And I was like, and I also think it's one of my favorites because. it feels very like steeped in reference in a way in this like nice subtle way but i feel like For people who have been...
Speaker: rocking with her. for a little bit of time and the boy genius of it all and everything you know there's little just little things in there but you're like yes yes yes like even like the first line of like it's not this house that's haunted i want either way made me think of i know the end the whole like i'm not afraid thing like i think that comes up throughout boy genius and her own stuff and like it feels very kind of like I was like yay I'm here too yeah What's up?
Speaker: Yeah. She does a good job bringing it all together. Yeah, yeah. and i like I like being able to know when she's doing it. I love. being so familiar with her music because I like just I don't know not being a music person I'm really not overly familiar with a lot of artists and she's one of the ones that I am so I i like Being able to recognize.
Speaker: another song in her song. It's really nice. For sure. It makes me feel like I'm in it. Yeah, exactly. It's nice. It's a nice, it's a nice community feeling. The Phoebe heads. Yeah. thebe stories Anyway. Oh, Pheebs.
Speaker: i Anything else, my friend? I think so. Nice little classic fixated episode on our hands. This was fun. Media on media on media on media. mean mean yeah exactly exactly ah Exactly count. fixated on exactly exactly
