Emotional Reactions to Detective Pikachu
00:00:00
Speaker
Hey everybody, welcome to another episode of Predetermined, a pro wrestling hangout. I'm your host, Garrett Callender, and with me, as always, a man who is not too proud to admit he shed a tear during Detective Pikachu, Derek Halpin. It was a damn good movie, Garrett, and I am not too proud to say that it made me weep at the end. It got me. A Pokemon movie made me cry.
00:00:26
Speaker
Did Mewtwo have a decent amount of screen time for you? Mewtwo had a shit ton of screen time and I don't know what I was expecting going into this movie but I know it's been out a couple weeks now but I don't know I wasn't expecting it to get me the way it did and I got to get to the emotional climax of the movie
Navigating Politics and Neutrality
00:00:47
Speaker
You find out exactly what Ryan Reynolds' role is in all of this. I won't spoil it. And next thing I know, I feel a little wetness, some moistness gathering at the bottom of my eyelids. And I said out loud, God damn it, it's a Pokemon movie. And I wiped the moisture from my eyes. I think your finisher should be called the emotional climax.
00:01:13
Speaker
Actually, that's what Switchblade's finisher should be. He looks like kind of that Emo Connor Oberst kind of guy, the emotional climax. Speaking of Switchblade, I don't know if you want to share this story with our listeners. I got a text from you recently saying that you found Switchblade, Jay White's, his demographic. I was walking around Vegas over the weekend and I saw somebody wearing a Switchblade shirt and I thought to myself, oh, that's the first time I've seen a Switchblade shirt. And then I looked up, so Switchblade shirt, maga hat.
00:01:44
Speaker
Make America Great Again. You think anybody's going to be offended that we're, we're, this is the closest we come to skirting a political issue on this, on this podcast, I think. I might later too. Oh, I guess we have kind of touched on pretty controversial topics when we've talked about the Saudi Arabia shows. Yeah. We're hitting you with those big topics, mostly dumb shit we did as kids.
00:02:09
Speaker
and occasionally politics. Never, I think we've stayed pretty quiet on politics. We've stayed pretty neutral on politics. Maybe ethics, maybe morality. This is a philosophical podcast at heart, Garrett. I think people know where we lean.
00:02:24
Speaker
Yeah, people get it. You have so much to share with our listeners on this episode. I don't know what stories you're going to be telling today, but I'm sure everyone's excited to hear them.
Garrett's Unconventional Vegas Experience
00:02:38
Speaker
How would you like to segue into our awesome entrance music that we have? I am so ready to tell you about my Vegas weekend, guys. Hit my goddamn music.
00:03:22
Speaker
So it's just your music now hit our good I say did I say my you said hit my goddamn music Do we usually say hit our goddamn music? We do usually I said my yeah, so I Know that's fine because you know what this this episode is mostly gonna be your stories So this week it can be your music. Well, I don't I want it to be our music. I think we should share this music. I
00:03:44
Speaker
Garrett, I'm going to be honest with you. When we did our Halloween episode months back and you mixed in all the different spooky sound effects, that was my goddamn music. So it's okay. I'm going to let this one slide. Double or nothing weekend in Las Vegas. Obviously that's what the theme of this episode is going to be. You are going to have stories about the event. You're going to have stories about things that took place in Vegas in the weekend around the event.
00:04:11
Speaker
Where should we begin to tell the tale of young Gartet in Sin City? I do want to say I did a couple episodes of the Curtain Jerks podcast, one of which is a double or nothing review that is available right now.
00:04:27
Speaker
Go check out facts and Chris's show the curtain jerks the best there ever was they're awesome And as they were describing the show to their lit our show to their listeners They said well they usually start with 10 or 15 minutes of not talking about wrestling before they get to talking about wrestling
00:04:46
Speaker
Is that a compliment or is that our seasoning? Is that how we do things here? I mean it is how we do things and I said that my goal is to tease people with wrestling and eventually we're just never going to talk about wrestling again but have a full wrestling fan base. Right. An army behind us that just care about what we're doing with our personal lives. Derek, I am the absolute goddamn worst Las Vegas visitor.
00:05:14
Speaker
You have made it clear before that you're just bad at being a tourist, or a traveler, or a visitor of any city, so that doesn't surprise me. This trip though, I, you know, when I do these wrestling trips, I fill in as much wrestling as I can. Like, I treat it like a work trip, for the most part. And like, all I do is just go to shit that we can talk
Humorous Brothel Encounter
00:05:37
Speaker
this time I was like pretty stressed out you know before this I kind of treated the first two days of this like I was actually on a vacation is that what you want to call it because I know one of the things that you did yeah oh man just so you know I spent my full four days in Las Vegas 100% sober
00:06:00
Speaker
Like on all levels? All levels, Derek. All levels. Most people go to Vegas to get fucked up. I went to Vegas for a detox. Wow. Wow. I bet you weren't expecting that.
00:06:15
Speaker
I mean, I hadn't really thought about it. I mean, I figured you'd at least get a little bit high. In a city where it is legal, Derek, where I could have gone to a store and purchased it like I was buying a box of tampons. You were the ultimate confrarian.
00:06:31
Speaker
I know and I said people are going to think that I'm an asshole for going to Vegas and not doing Vegas, but that stresses me out. Vegas is hard. There's a lot of people. Everyone's drunk and kind of weird.
Pitbull Concert Antics
00:06:44
Speaker
Day one, Derek, I checked into the stratosphere. I did not Thursday. This was Thursday. I got to that room at noon. I did not leave that room until 11 a.m. the next day.
00:06:57
Speaker
So you just treated it like you were at your home? I was in a house hotel, Derek. And I will tell you, I stayed nude the whole time. I'm not a naked person. Like, I don't hang out naked. But for some reason, in that Vegas hotel room, I was like, you know what? No clothes. This is vacation. So what is it like about Vegas that turns you into good boy Garrett?
00:07:22
Speaker
I don't understand. It's like when you put water on gremlins. It really does feel like a heel gimmick.
00:07:29
Speaker
It's like everywhere else, you're a completely sinful, dick-headed asshole. But then when you go into Vegas, you're a good boy. I kind of like this gimmick, though. Good boy, Garrett's fun. Oh, do you want to know what I did in that hotel room, Derek? I ordered some room service, and I took six baths while reading a book, and everybody's like, why is this part of the story? I don't know. It just feels important. And you were naked. Yeah, naked.
00:07:56
Speaker
Were you naked and then took like a bath and read a book and then when you left the bath you just stayed naked? Oh yeah. I became naked after the room service came. I had some cornflake crusted French toast and a club sandwich brought to me. I ordered all the food to me and that's all I did and it was great and I just slept. This was probably the part of the trip that felt most like a vacation.
00:08:20
Speaker
Oh, absolutely, like I was so well rested and ready for the next day. Eli from Music City Horror gave me the ultimate hookup. He got us a free room. He ended up getting us two sweets at the Hilton. Yes, two sweet, Derek, two sweets. So I just had a fucking sweet for free. Thanks to Eli, he's the MVP of this weekend and as far as I'm concerned, he's the number one contender for the AEW title.
00:08:49
Speaker
That's fine because I would like to give a shout out to Eli Saturday while I was out and about before I went and saw Detective Pikachu. I got a tweet from Eli saying that he was missing me because he was flipping through the radio and saw a White Sox game on Sirius and that made him think of me and he wanted to let me know that he missed me. And so Eli, I miss you too buddy. Thank you. And I'm glad you were not in the hotel room with naked good guy Garrett.
00:09:14
Speaker
Just so you know, your name came up so many times this weekend, we all missed you. Everybody wanted you there. We have Chicago coming up, all out. We're doing it. Any chance you get to work my name into your stories, please do. It'll make me feel like I was there. You got brought up a lot, especially talking about Buffalo Wild Wings at All In and how you wanted to fight every person in the restaurant.
00:09:39
Speaker
I didn't wanna fight everybody, I just wanted to fight one guy. So Eli gets into town, we meet up and we're gonna go grab some food. One of my go-to places to eat when I'm in Vegas is the Gordon Ramsay burger joint burger. And on the way there, Eli and I are walking. A man followed me for two blocks, Derek. Two blocks. You specifically? Well, Eli and I, and he goes, come on man, you wanna go to a whore house? Come on, let's go get some whores.
00:10:05
Speaker
and he was following me for two blocks while shouting this behind me. Come on, don't you want some sluts for your nuts? Come on, come get sluts for your nuts with me. And there's like families around where this is happening is on Las Vegas Boulevard, but we're in front of the M&M store. Like, this is not... Derek, I did- Not the Marshall Mathers store, but like the candy. Yes, the candy. Branded t-shirts that say like peanut M&Ms or whatever, while a man is shouting sluts for your nuts at me.
00:10:35
Speaker
Let me see if you've gotten a peanut M&M shirt. You could have got sluts for your nuts. Garrett. I'm sorry.
00:10:46
Speaker
Are you, you're sorry that this man was shouting this at me, that I was assaulted? Your nuts were assaulting. So that night though, Friday night I went to see Pitbull, Derek. Yeah, I know. This is the part I wanted to hear about. I got a $20 ticket to see Pitbull perform at Planet Hollywood.
00:11:08
Speaker
And Vegas is fucking weird this weekend, man, because there was the punk rock and bowling festival going on, a wrestling convention, and just pretty people. So it was a weird juxtaposition of people around me. I'm going into Pitbull. I'm so excited to see who's going to be at this show. As I walk in, it's the most attractive people you've ever seen in your life. Short skirts, men wearing fancy suits. I wore a Hawaiian shirt there because I was feeling zazzy.
00:11:38
Speaker
I get to my row. No shit, Derek. My entire row is senior citizens.
00:11:44
Speaker
That's awesome. You were safe. The first person I had to walk past was an old man wearing khaki cargo shorts. I get to my seat. I'm like, who am I going to be sitting next to this? The answer, I was sitting next to Judy, Derek. I sat next to Judy. Pitbull was 45 minutes late to the stage. So I got to hear Judy's life story. She was probably mid to late 60s from Detroit, actually a pro wrestling fan. Her husband still watches. She quit a few years ago because it got too hokey.
00:12:13
Speaker
Dean Ambrose would agree. Did you and Judy have the same experience the day before in your hotel room? No, because the night before, Judy, I shit you not. This lady was out at a club at 1am and was telling me about the Diplo DJ set that she had attended.
00:12:37
Speaker
Good lord. What is Judy from Vegas doing at Diplo at one in the morning, Derek? What is she doing at Pitbull on Friday?
00:12:44
Speaker
Well, I can tell you, hanging out with you, her daughter was there for a bachelorette party. She wasn't there for the bachelorette party. She was there to have an extra room so that when the girls got in a fight, they could go to her room and escape each other. So Judy was going to see Pitbull by herself to have something to do. And Derek, this Pitbull show, if I, anybody that's tuning in right now to hear AEW stories are like, what the fuck is happening?
00:13:10
Speaker
We're getting to that. We're telling one man's story about being a good boy in Vegas. Yeah, I'm being a good boy in Vegas. I went to see Pitbull sober. And Derek, if I were to write a parody of what I thought a Pitbull show would be like,
AEW Event Chaos
00:13:23
Speaker
it turns out it is just exactly what it already is. It was it was already the parody of itself that I desired. And Pitbull never let me forget that I was having the greatest night of my life.
00:13:36
Speaker
How many times did he say Mr. Worldwide? A lot, a lot, Derek. And this show opens with a video telling me he's an entrepreneur, an educator, a musician, whole thing narrated by Tony Robbins. God damn it. And the show opened with Rock and Roll All Night by Kiss, not a Pitbull song. What? Pitbull touched all the butts on the stage. There were a lot of pretty ladies on stage. He touched all the butts.
00:14:08
Speaker
Did he sign a waiver for that? I mean it was a residency and I'm guessing that was not the first time he'd grab butts on that show. Okay. But I'll tell you, for the first 40 minutes I agreed with Pitbull and I was having the night of my life. After 40 minutes I felt like I had my fill.
00:14:26
Speaker
So it was like something that was really sweet. Like, it's nice at first and then it's a little too much sugar. Yeah, there was a lot of fire, there was a good amount of confetti. He played that Kesha song I liked. It was a good, it was a worthwhile $20, especially because I got to hang out with Judy for a couple hours and in front of me was a three-year-old child. Everywhere else in that place, just sexy people ready to fuck. Except me and Judy.
00:14:52
Speaker
I was hoping that the next part of the story was that you and Judy went back to your hotel room and had some frosted flakes, crusted French toast, and a couple more baths. And you touched her butt. Well, Derek, even if that happened, I couldn't tell you because Pitbull also never let me forget that what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas. That's true. And he says that what happens in Miami never happened.
00:15:18
Speaker
Except you're going to tell me all the stuff that happened in Vegas that was pro wrestling related. Yeah, let's get to pro wrestling because we're fifth. Here we are. Fifteen minutes into this podcast, the curtain jerks have it right. Have not mentioned pro wrestling yet. Now we are here Saturday. AEW ready to do it. Go record with the curtain jerks. That episode is going to be coming out soon. Then once we hug those boys, those are those are those are like our East Coast brothers.
00:15:40
Speaker
Yeah, I love those guys. It turns out Fax is actually gonna be in Dallas for the G1, so I'll hang out with him there and hopefully the both boys will get to hang out with us at all out. Fuck yeah. But, so they warned, like not the curtain jerks, but we got an email warning us to show up early for the show. In my mind, I'm thinking, this is the MGM Grand Arena. They have had large events before. This is not gonna be an issue.
00:16:08
Speaker
We get there and we see the line, we start following the line, and every time we rounded a corner of the casino following this line, you thought to yourself, this is the end of the line.
00:16:20
Speaker
There, it got to the point where we realized, we're gonna be lucky if we get in here before the first bell of the main show. Right, you text this to me. It was wild. The line went so far that we ended up outside, wrapped around the casino behind it. No joke, front to back took me 20 minutes to walk the entire line.
00:16:41
Speaker
Good lord. The way it was wrapped, there's no way we didn't walk at least a mile. So what time were the doors and what time did you get there? Because like you said, you got that warning email. Yeah, so doors were, let's see, doors were at three o'clock and the show was going to start at four. I got in line, I want to say around like 240.
00:17:05
Speaker
Yeah, that's not early enough. That was not early enough. I know I've told you about some of my PWG buddies, Matt, Mike, and Kelly. I meet up with them at Wrestlemanias and wrestling events, and they always get drunk and cause problems. And I love them to death. I'm happy that I only see them a couple times a year, because I don't know if I could handle that on a weekly basis. As we're walking this line together, we see Dave Meltzer.
00:17:35
Speaker
Jesus. The Melts is wearing a Giants jersey. He's pulling his suitcase. And my buddy Matt goes, Meltzer! And Meltzer looked at him and smiled. And then Matt responds with this. Boo! Boo! And booed Dave Meltzer straight to his face.
00:17:55
Speaker
And watching Dave Meltzer's face go from smile to frown. I don't think it's nice to do that to somebody. And Meltzer, obviously, he didn't know this man was with me. But getting to witness that, because I know there's a lot of people out there on the internet that would have loved to have booed Dave Meltzer to his face. Luckily, my friend Matt had had a few drinks and was ready to do it.
00:18:17
Speaker
He wasn't gonna let that opportunity pass him by. I mean, you had the opportunity to tell him that like last week's episode, we mentioned the state of his office. I should have gone over and been like, man, I love your office. And he'd be like, what? I saw Viceland, man. I saw that docu-series. Dark Side of the Ring. Your office is in shambles, sir. You need to go home and fix that.
00:18:41
Speaker
You need to hire somebody. I'm sure there's a wrestler with OCD that would love to just clean and tidy up your office for you.
00:18:50
Speaker
Where are you at with Dave Meltzer? I know there's people that respect the melts, and there's people who don't respect the melts. Where do you fall on Meltzer? I'm 50-50. I think a good way of looking at Meltzer is if he gives a match five stars, it's probably worth checking out. I do think there's matches that are quality matches for different reasons than he typically gushes about that are worth checking out, and so he does have blind spots.
00:19:18
Speaker
He is what he is. I don't hate Meltzer the same way Bischoff does, or some of the people who work backstage do. He's been around for a while for a reason. I'm sure he's got some kind of... I don't know. Obviously he's got a good rapport with the Bucks and everything, so...
00:19:33
Speaker
Yeah, and what's funny is over the weekend, I heard Joey Janela say, he goes, yeah, I'm confused about Dave Meltzer sometimes. He goes, I wrestled my first match at PWG. And he goes, it was me versus Sammy Guevara. And he goes, the match got 4.5 stars. He goes, there is no way my match there was better than Undertaker Shawn Michaels. But according to Dave Meltzer's scale, it is.
00:20:00
Speaker
So you get in line, it's an epic line, and when did you get in, and what other stories do you have from being in line? It's hot as fuck in this line, and everybody that's walking by is surprised when you finally get to the end, and everybody's obviously complaining, because we're all convinced we're gonna miss the show.
00:20:21
Speaker
And the best part of the line though is when we got up to the sexy pool party with all the sexiest people you've ever seen in like speedos and bikinis and everything. And then there is just the wrestling fans gawking over a fence at them. So you have the neckbeard parade right next to the sexy party. It really felt like it was some sort of walk in dead situation where all the sexy people found a safe haven and there's all these grossies hanging on the outside shaking the fence trying to get in. Like me included in that.
00:20:53
Speaker
I can only imagine how sweaty you were. Oh, I was sweating my balls off. It was a rare opportunity where I did wear shorts. That's rare. God damn, I wish I could have seen that. I also had no idea I was ever going to have to be outside that day. I had no reason to believe I was going to be one mile away from the arena outside.
00:21:14
Speaker
but I actually we got in I walked through the metal detectors right as the bell rang for the battle royal so it was honestly perfect timing it worked out there was no chance in hell I was getting merch though that line was yeah were you just like I'm getting that online if I get it at all it well there was stuff you could only get there but when I saw the merch line was I mean you remember the merch line at all in yeah that was ridiculous same situation one table
00:21:42
Speaker
They did not learn from that, so I didn't buy shit. The seats we had, Luke and Billy went with me. Heart's like lions, Luke and his buddy Billy. Love those guys. Love those guys. I saw you hook them up with a hat. Yeah, they sat with me. And for any listeners of the show, I feel like Luke and Billy truly got the predetermined experience. I sat in the middle of them.
00:22:11
Speaker
That should be a thing Starcast sells as the opportunity to sit with us, Derek. Luke and Billy need to come over to Chicago for all out. They know they're invited. That's the true predetermined experience. That is, that is. We're gonna drink some Zima's, Queen of the Ring will be there, it's gonna feel authentic. It's gonna be fun. But we get in and our seats are fucking awesome. They're great seats. However, I had the camera crane in front of me.
00:22:37
Speaker
I was in the corner where they had the big crane sit up to do the sweeping shots, and basically anytime there was going to be a high spot, that dude moved that crane right in front of my vision.
00:22:49
Speaker
Yeah, at least they were great seats. You have to take this stuff into account. Yeah, and there was no telling that that was going to be the case when I bought these. It's not like they sold me obstructed view seating. I just happened to be sitting where that crane was. And I mean, that entire side of the arena had to deal with it. I was kind of in the corner facing the stage. So I at least had a good shot of the stage.
00:23:10
Speaker
So to to kind of give people some insight, what did you think of the stage and what were people kind of talking about in line and then in the arena? Like, was there like murmurs, rumblings of stuff that was going to happen? Rumor like just fill me in. I will say this, this was the audience wasn't as hot as the all in audience was. But as far as the people that were in the audience, I want to say that I was surrounded by some very, very quality human beings.
00:23:41
Speaker
That's good. This is one of the first wrestling shows I've been to where I didn't have people yelling dumb shit around me the entire show or like a guy who would yell something offensive or like, you know, I just I wasn't getting that vibe and it was really nice to just see everybody's fucking cool with each other. Everybody's just happy to be there and excited to see their people. Well, you were there for a big fucking moment. It was the first show under it was the first show under a new wrestling promotion.
00:24:08
Speaker
It was such a good vibe, everybody was excited. Other than people being pissed about the line, there just wasn't really any negativity. Everybody was excited for everything. The other thing I guess I wanna ask, did it ever at any point dawn on you that that is what you were sitting in on, was the first show for a new wrestling promotion?
AEW Matches and Wrestler Impressions
00:24:27
Speaker
Oh, a hundred percent. A hundred percent. There were so many times that as I was sitting in the seat that I'm looking at things happening and I'm like, this is there were moments that you, you know, 20 years from now could still end up being looked back on, depending how things go in the future. Right. So first match is Battle Royal.
00:24:47
Speaker
loved it, loved the shit out of it. I had a really good time with that. I love that they brought people out in pairs of four or whatever. And one of the best spots of this battle royal apparently didn't make it to TV. Yeah, I heard that they were still working out some issues as far as getting their camera work and their timing down, but it was the first show, so to be expected. There was a spot where Janela pulls out a cigarette and lights it and is wrestling with a lit cigarette in his mouth.
00:25:16
Speaker
I did see this. And then Jimmy Havoc takes the cigarette away and staples a lit cigarette to Joey Janela's forehead and the rest of the match you can see smoke coming out of the tip of the cigarette like it's a fucking chimney on his head. I did see the video of this.
00:25:33
Speaker
It was so awesome. I had never seen that spot. And it like having, you know, Janela and Jimmy Havoc both in there, I'm happy we got to see kind of a hardcore spot in the middle of this thing. Janela had the nastiest elimination.
00:25:49
Speaker
He got basically powerbombed out of the ring through a table, landed directly on his fucking head. Jesus. It was like, it was the most Joey Janela spot you could have. Like a spot where you're like, well, Joey's dead, but really he's just Janela, he's fine. I think a lot of us were expecting Hangman being the last entrant, at least I was. I think we even talked about that on the show last week.
00:26:15
Speaker
yeah and nobody was mad about that it ended up in the whole time i was like is it who's on the outside of this that we forgot about who is going to try and fuck somebody it was mjf so hangman still goes over kip sabian versus sammy great
00:26:31
Speaker
Not a lot to say about that first match this is though where I started noticing Damn, the crowd just isn't hot like it was at all in and I think a big part of it was With all in that was a stacked superstar card Well, I want to ask you about that because I remember one of the things that we talked about Especially with like with Queen of the Ring we talked about That the crowd was kind of quiet at times the way they would be at a New Japan show. I
00:27:01
Speaker
So how did like you're saying now that all in crowd was a little bit rowdier and more lively. I yeah I 100 percent think so because the mat the show opened the first match on the card was SCU versus the guys from Oriental Wrestling. That's what it's called right.
00:27:19
Speaker
but you've got the card with you, don't you? I have it in front of me. It was SEMA, T-Hawk, and L. Lindemann, which I, or Lindemann, did not know him. I was familiar with SEMA and T-Hawk, and it just felt like the crowd wasn't as into it as I was expecting them to be, and it could have been because they weren't super familiar with three of the guys in the match. Well, this, again, some of these people that you're gonna see on these AEW shows are gonna be the first time people are having an experience seeing them at all.
00:27:48
Speaker
exactly and i think that that was it's not like they were dead the whole time it was just like in several of these matches i noticed it was like halfway through when business started picking up that these guys were starting to win the crowd over guys that they had never seen before and then the crowd would get hot
00:28:06
Speaker
But you really heard that there was a similar response to the debut of the Super Smash Brothers, right? Yes, because a lot of people and honestly, I wasn't familiar with both parts of the Super Smash Brothers. I'd seen Evil Player Uno a bunch in PWG. I wasn't familiar with the other guy that came out with him.
00:28:25
Speaker
Okay. Well, but this is gonna be, like I said, this is gonna be growing pains in the sense that these are indie stars, and if they're gonna start getting the mainstream stage, there's gonna be a period where the fans have to learn who these people are.
00:28:39
Speaker
And honestly, seeing them put on awesome matches is the best way to learn who they are. Absolutely. And I think they were getting that. And what do we have? After that, it went to Britt Baker, Nyla Rose, Kylie Rae, and then a surprise. You know, a surprise nobody saw coming. Right. Which we weren't even talking about it. Yeah. The inclusion of Awesome Kong.
00:29:03
Speaker
I think when we all saw Brandy come out, we were all like, oh fuck, she's getting ready to insert herself into the match. But when she said, I want to make this match awesome, Awesome Kong comes out, seeing the pop that Awesome Kong got was amazing. Did that get you fucking hard? Oh yeah. I think if you hadn't seen Awesome Kong wrestle, you would at least seen her in glow on Netflix at this point.
00:29:26
Speaker
Yeah, that I loved it. I was happy with Britt Baker going over. That was fun as hell. But the next match I got so fucking amped for Jack Evans and Helico versus best friends and getting to see all of these people's new entrance music in their new videos was maybe one of my favorite parts of the night because I felt like all night everybody's entrance music was so good.
00:29:52
Speaker
Was it like a surreal experience to see people? Did it feel like a lot of you guys that you've been watching for years had made it to the big time? Getting to see Chuck Taylor, not in like, I mean, he obviously is part of a tag team, so it's a tag match, but getting to see him part of the main card of a big show is just something I never thought I would get the opportunity to see.
00:30:14
Speaker
Same with, one thing I left out of the battle royal, fucking Orange Cassidy debuted at AEW. Yeah, his spot was fucking awesome. Seen 14,000 people sell Orange Cassidy's kicks was just a thing of beauty. Did you do that to Tommy Dreamer?
00:30:34
Speaker
Yes. Yes. And West Coast correspondent John said that he just read an interview with Orange Cassidy and Orange said that he got the idea from his character from one moment in the movie Wet Hot American Summer.
00:30:51
Speaker
Have you ever seen that movie? I haven't. Paul Rudd plays a character who just doesn't give a shit and everything is over exaggerated on how little he cares about stuff. And at one point they want him to put away his food tray and he just like is so mopey and dragging his body and just so shitty about it. Orange Cassidy took that one moment and turned it into an entire pro wrestling character.
00:31:18
Speaker
But back to that best friends match, man. And Helico and Jack Evans, a lot of people in the crowd I could tell weren't as familiar with them. And those guys got over so fast. Those were two of my favorites in Lucha Underground and PWG. I hadn't seen them tag in a very long time. And Helico got hurt. They kind of split up. Jack Evans went to AAA. Fuck. Seeing those two back together, they are going to be so huge if they let them go.
00:31:46
Speaker
I think the question I want to ask you and I guess I'm not going to get a specific answer, but just I want to get some feedback. One of the things about bringing all these indie guys together under a main stage banner. Their styles are going to have to mesh in some way and like guys like Cassidy. Are they going to be able to take that gimmick and work it
00:32:15
Speaker
Do you know what I'm getting at? Can you have Chris Jericho versus Orange Cassidy? I'm trying to think of who doesn't work for him. Part of the beauty of pro wrestling is taking guys who do have conflicting styles and seeing how they work together. I understand that's part of the name of the game. This is the first time we're going to see
00:32:39
Speaker
I don't know, like, obviously there's rumors out right now that AEW offered Joey Ryan a contract and that he turned it down, but how would you see the dick flip translating to a mainstream stage? Because obviously that wouldn't happen in WWE. But in AEW, because of they're going to try to let these guys do what they've been doing for a long time that got them to this point, some of that's gonna be interesting to see how they make that translate.
00:33:05
Speaker
I could see if they had, I don't know if I could ever see Joey Ryan using the dickflip in a title match and beating a Jericho or an Omega, but I don't know, should he be able to? Is that something you would allow in booking for that? Or do you think that, like, lessens something that they're obviously trying to make very prestigious?
00:33:25
Speaker
Yeah, I don't know. I think that these are the questions we're going to have to get answered in the coming months and years with this promotion, which is how are they going to handle how they sell for guys who are comedy acts? Because I mean, it's one thing for a comedy act to be like it's it's just the character being entertaining and over the top of shit. But when it comes to actually inflicting damage with comedy moves, how do you go from Kenny Omega, who will absolutely need the fuck out of your face to Orange Cassidy softly kicking at your shins?
00:33:55
Speaker
Like, how do those two styles mesh in a way that works? Like, I don't know. I guess we'll get the answer to that, but it's just something to think about. That being said, if, you know, on paper, Orange Cassidy versus Kazuchika Okada is a terrible matchup. But that being said, if you found out that match were happening down the street from you, you would be there in a heartbeat. Well, right.
00:34:18
Speaker
You wouldn't know how it would work, but you would go. See, that's what I want. I want a 60-minute match between Orange Cassidy and Okada.
Speculations on CM Punk at AEW
00:34:28
Speaker
Were there any CM Punk rumblings before or during the event? I just want to address that and get it out of the way. Everybody wondered. I mean, I don't think we talked to a single person who didn't question whether or not he was showing up that night.
00:34:44
Speaker
right and obviously that didn't work out but what okay yeah I feel like you should say what's going on with the the the people saying that there's hidden messages that he's gonna be it all out
00:34:58
Speaker
Oh, about the Chicago flag? Yeah. Listen, I know that not everyone is gonna know this, so I'm not gonna be an asshole about it. For years, Punk has worn on his tights and on his shin pads, or kick pads, he's worn stars. And people associate those stars with CM Punk. Punk got those stars, because he's from Chicago, he got those stars from the Chicago flag. There's four of them on the Chicago flag.
00:35:27
Speaker
Obviously, if the if AEW does a show in Chicago and they want to tie it into the fact that they're here, they may end up using the Chicago stars and some of their advertising. It's not necessarily a CM Punk reference or a tease. In fact, it's probably not.
00:35:43
Speaker
I guess it's not impossible that one day Punk will come back to wrestling and it's fun to speculate, but come on. I mean, he didn't want to be involved with All In. It's hard to imagine something has drastically changed in his life to make him want to come it all out, I guess, but it could happen. But I wouldn't read into the fucking stars being on promotional material. What do you think of right now these guys, you know, their show doesn't start until October?
00:36:12
Speaker
So they've got a lot of time, but they're still going to do a monthly pay-per-view up until then, it seems. Right. And they are going off the pay-per-view model, so people are having to pay 50 bucks to watch these shows. Yeah. Where do you stand with that? Is that too steep for you? Or do you think that since these guys have been giving us free content for literally years now through the YouTube show?
00:36:37
Speaker
I don't know if that has anything to do with it, especially since ultimately their goal is to draw in. They want to draw in their loyal fans, obviously, but they already have their money.
00:36:47
Speaker
It's about drawing in new viewers and getting people into wrestling who previously weren't and stealing people from WWE. They're banking on their loyal fans being willing to pay $50 and that may be steep anyway because like it or not, whether or not you want to talk about it or not, WWE changed the pay-per-view market when they made the network and they made you have access to every wrestling pay-per-view every month for $9.99.
00:37:11
Speaker
And so to ask people every month to come back and drop $50, there's going to be a lot of people who are willing to do it, but there's also going to be people who don't know if every card is going to be worth 50 bucks. Like you said, all in was like a supercard.
00:37:25
Speaker
was double or nothing that way. There were surprises, but there were also a lot of people that people don't necessarily know very well. And the other thing is the news came out that when they do their weekly show, it's going to be like WWE where every week they go to a different venue and do it. And you start to realize that when you break it down, this is a huge endeavor.
00:37:45
Speaker
This is fucking difficult to do. Every week, they're going to try to do what WWE does and go to a new city to tape or broadcast their show.
00:37:56
Speaker
Do you think when they finally start doing that, that they're going to have to do run venues that like Ring of Honor was running? I don't know. I mean, I think these are the questions that we really haven't been asking. Which is the logistics of running a wrestling promotion and taking it on tour the whole year. Or is there going to be an offseason?
00:38:16
Speaker
Well, they have made it sound like there would be an off-season, and I hope that is the case. But I know their Jacksonville show, the Fight for the Fallen show, didn't sell out immediately, and I don't know if it is sold out still. And they're running like a theater. It's not like they're running an arena this time.
00:38:34
Speaker
Every show can't be Double or Nothing or All In. We're going to start getting these smaller shows. But I think what was the coolest thing about Double or Nothing is, yeah, maybe it wasn't the superstar packed card that All In was, but this was a good introduction to a lot of these characters. It was a lot of multi-man matches introducing you to these people. And as I was seeing some of them, especially in the women's match,
AEW's Wrestling Storytelling and Talent
00:38:59
Speaker
seeing Nyla Rose for the first time and just thinking, fuck, I'm so excited to see this singles matchup, this singles matchup. It felt like I was more getting just a sampling of everybody on this. And I mean that in a good way, because it was still good matches and it was a really good introduction to a big chunk of the card.
00:39:16
Speaker
I think everyone's speculating on what exactly it is that they are going to bring to the table every week. And it's just going to take time to get a feel for what AEW is going to be. And I think everyone's expecting that the one thing that you can count on consistently week to week is that you will get great pro wrestling matches. They won't have as many gimmicky comedy, I don't know, segments the way WWE does them.
00:39:43
Speaker
But I think the assumption is that whatever show you tune into, regardless of whether you're super familiar with the people involved or not, I think people are expecting AEW to give you quality pro wrestling matches every week. And I think that's fine. I think that's what people want. Let's talk a little bit about, I don't know, one of the three big matches on this show. To me, the match that I know, I'm assuming you're going to Cody Dustin.
00:40:12
Speaker
Yeah. That, I mean, for me, match of the night, it's hard for me to argue that any other match was better than that. A lot of people think Buck's Lucha Bros was the match of the weekend. It kind of seems like it was split between those two. I don't know. I've heard. I've heard from people online saying that and the Kenny or Jericho Omega match was.
00:40:34
Speaker
a match of the night i've heard different things from different people so and that's that's a good problem to have yeah when you have people split on what they enjoyed most but i mean the last three matches of this show were awesome like that's why i don't think every match was amazing
00:40:52
Speaker
but I think it was a card of good to amazing matches and it was kind of structured and like the show got more and more awesome as it went. Kind of like a New Japan show how they you know they structured it what felt like most important story wise. But I think the best actual pro wrestling story Cody and Dustin Rhodes
00:41:15
Speaker
Fuck. Cody re- like once again, remember how I said this dude's gonna become the DiCaprio of pro wrestling where he's just gonna be the storyteller? Is that what you feel still? He made us cry at the last two fucking pay-per-views they've done, Derek. I was gonna say, he definitely had the emotional climax from these two shows between All In and Double or Nothing.
00:41:37
Speaker
What did you I mean what were you see I acknowledged that I cried during detective Pikachu So I guess he got you weepy at the end. Oh at the end I had that tear running down my cheek I looked over at Billy it looked like Billy was welling up like I think it cut this up like people in the crowd crying like you just have that moment where he says I don't need a partner I Don't need a friend and then his voice cracks as he says I need a brother
00:42:03
Speaker
he needs his older brother.
00:42:23
Speaker
You got a couple guys who are bloody, just beat the hell out of each other and their brothers and here's pro wrestling storytelling 101. And Dustin was weeping and Cody's voice was cracking and they embraced and it was an awesome fucking moment. What did you think about the Triple H chair spot?
00:42:41
Speaker
that was a moment thrown I guess I just looked down at my arm and he hadn't even gotten the fucking sledgehammer out when they wheeled that chair the chair came up I'm like what the fuck is that triple H is thrown and Cody comes out and he just stares at the chair and like it's almost like he scoffs at it I looked down at my arm and I had goosebumps
00:43:02
Speaker
That was one of those moments that when I was thinking, going into this show, I feel like I'm going to see an iconic moment that I'm never going to forget. And to me, that was one of them. And the one from All In was all the druid penises, right? Absolutely. I'll never forget druid penises.
00:43:22
Speaker
I think what's so awesome about it is I love the way he's playing it off where it's almost like he's stealing WWE's playbook of taking shots and then being like, I don't know what you're talking about. You can interpret that a lot of different ways.
00:43:37
Speaker
Did you see today TNT posted that gif and then just put Triple H's throne question mark? The company that's going to be airing this show is the only one that's been like, is that what you're talking about? What? That's what that was? It didn't look as sweet as I would have liked when he hit it with the hammer, but it was still an awesome fucking moment. Just to see- I mean, it definitely crumbled and fell apart.
00:44:06
Speaker
Do you think that was Cody's idea? I want to know who wrote that segment. I mean, I couldn't even begin to speculate. I mean, Cody has been master PR guy during all of this, and I think he deserves all the credit in the world for the way he's talked to the media. The way that actually AEW in general is allowing media in and they're having press conferences and they're having like the swarm of reporters come around guys after the show's over, after the match is over.
00:44:35
Speaker
And instead of keeping them out, they're bringing them in and making them a part of the atmosphere and kind of a part of the story. Yeah.
00:44:45
Speaker
I mean, I couldn't begin to tell you what ideas are Cody's or where they're coming from. But I don't know. I mean, I know that was Simon from what culture I watched their review of AEW today. He gave that a thumbs down, by the way, the throne spot. I don't know if he thought that was too much. I don't know if he thought it was too below them, but I don't mind it.
00:45:08
Speaker
I think it's already out there that this is the place disgruntled WWE fans are welcome to come to. So why not just, it's a playful shot and we'll see how they respond going forward.
00:45:21
Speaker
Yeah, I also saw quite a few wrestling critics say that that was an unnecessary part of the show. But for their first show, and it is clearly a competition between the two, they've made it clear what they're set out to do. I don't think it was a bad spot. I thought it was fun. It was a moment that got the entire crowd to pop.
00:45:42
Speaker
I don't think it was in poor taste. And I think if you're offended, I don't understand. I guess I'll talk. We'll touch more on this after we're done reviewing the show. But I don't understand why people are being so soft all of a sudden about these companies taking shots at each other.
00:45:57
Speaker
I don't understand why people's feelings are getting hurt by this at all. It's the weirdest, but Cody and Dustin was awesome, but go on. Well, just going on to like things about writing, did you see Jericho's entrance for the show? Of course. So Jericho did an interview and said that Cody wrote that entrance. That was Cody's idea.
00:46:20
Speaker
Well, it was a brilliant fucking idea. Oh, the crowd popped so hot because at first when we saw Lionheart, I was like, holy shit, is this what AEW? And then we realized we're going through the eras of Jericho. And goddamn, that was a beautiful entrance. Yeah. Did you hear that both lucha bros are injured?
00:46:38
Speaker
Yeah, I did. They had to cancel a show they were supposed to be at because they're both hurt. But I guess the good news is there's so much time in between AEW shows they might have time to recover. Yeah. And supposedly I think they're going back to AAA to get a rematch for those titles. That was honestly one of the biggest surprises of the night for me. I really thought the Lucha Bros were going over.
00:47:01
Speaker
No, and I guess there were a lot of people, you said that this was second match of the night in your opinion? Yeah, a lot of people, this was a lot of people's first. A lot of the people I talked to, no one really said Jericho Omega to me. Everybody either went Cody Dustin or Bucks Lucha Bros. But I would never fault somebody for choosing an Omega match. Because for a lot of people, once again, this is a lot of people's first time to get to see Kenny Omega in person.
00:47:29
Speaker
And well, but I think I think. This is where I guess the the the longtime pro wrestling fan of me who grew up with a very specific style, I this maybe that part of me is talking, I think.
00:47:43
Speaker
the magnitude of a match can add to it without necessarily doing anything. Do you know what I mean? You mean just two such iconic figures in pro wrestling having the main event of the first show of a new company? Yeah, like I think that when people say that, I think that's what they mean because like if you talk about WrestleMania 18, Rock Hogan, I don't think anybody's sitting there arguing that it's a five star classic.
00:48:10
Speaker
But it's also a spectacle. And considering the way the show ended. I think that's just as much a part of the match as anything right. Oh. For sure. That moment is lumped in with that match as well. And you know I.
00:48:27
Speaker
I'm going just based off of Cody's acting and the story and how good of a match I got out of Dustin Rhodes that he hasn't been doing a shit ton in WWE. So getting to see him have this fucking really cool match where he is just gushing blood like Eddie Guerrero, the whole match. It was just such a good moment for me.
00:48:46
Speaker
Yeah, Dean Ambrose, I'm sorry, Jon Moxley walking. And just seeing the crowd kind of start chirping and scattering over there and just everybody turning and looking. Because there was a moment where you're kind of thinking, maybe it isn't happening tonight. But when Jericho started cutting the promo, I kind of figured, well, somebody's coming out. I didn't know who. But looking up and seeing Moxley come down, the crowd was exploding.
00:49:14
Speaker
And how fucking cool is it that his first feud that they're setting up is Jon Moxley versus Kenny Omega?
00:49:23
Speaker
This is what AEW is going to be about, right? Guys with two different styles who are, you know, I mean, it makes sense.
Jon Moxley's AEW Debut and Future Feuds
00:49:31
Speaker
They, I mean, in some ways they're a perfect fit for each other because Kenny's got this reputation for putting on five star classics and Moxley's got this reputation of being like a deathmatch King. And yet he's bringing the extra star power that he got from being in WWE all these years. And Kenny's bringing the star power that he's established.
00:49:53
Speaker
On the international scene like it seems like a really good whoever made the decision to put those two together in their first program is a good move
00:50:02
Speaker
Yeah, that's a matchup that I would have never picked first for Jon Moxley. But now that I see that that kind of appears to be where they're heading, I think that's fucking cool. Because if you had done Jericho Moxley, yes, we haven't seen Chris Jericho fight Jon Moxley, but we have seen Chris Jericho fight Dean Ambrose. Seen this brand new matchup of like a top WWE guy versus a top new Japan guy for the first time. That feels huge. Is there going to be a point where it
00:50:33
Speaker
It wears off that he's a WWE guy. I mean, it's obviously we can talk about what a big get that is for AEW, having somebody who's a former WWE champion, having a member of the Shield. And obviously, he had established himself on the independent circuit years before.
00:50:53
Speaker
But it's like he's at a mythic status now because of where he's been. Like I said, I think it's a perfect fit because I think Omega and Moxley are going to elevate each other with their program together. And we just have to see what they do with their matches. And I'm ready to see him talk because did you see the promo that Moxley cut and put on Twitter?
00:51:15
Speaker
Oh, yeah. God damn. That was a hot promo for me. Like hearing him. He wasn't like he was there to claim the AEW title. He said he's there to get back his soul. What do you say about this? He's breathing fresh air for the first time in a long time and he's there to knock the pillars of the industry on their ass and they're not reading history books anymore. They're writing them. That what you said that no joke goosebumps just popped up on my arm.
00:51:43
Speaker
Yeah. Seeing Dean Ambrose give a shit is awesome because Dean Ambrose has never been. I'm going to keep saying Dean here for a minute. We'll switch over to Moxley. It's going to take some time. It's going to take a minute. But like Dean was never the same again after he won the title and Stone Cold Steve Austin beat his ass on live TV verbally. Yeah. It just he was never the same to me again after that.
00:52:11
Speaker
Why is that? Has anybody ever really talked about why it felt different from that point on? I think that Stone Cold was right. I think Dean Ambrose looked like he was coasting and he wasn't an exciting champion. We were all excited for him to get the belt. But once he had it, it just wasn't... It was kind of like when Kenny got the belt. We waited so long to see it happen that once it happened, something about it just didn't feel right.
00:52:35
Speaker
Is that the problem when babyfaces finally get the title is that it's mostly the chase and a lot of times it's hard to live up to the hype after they win it? What babyfaces have held belts for like a very long time that it was awesome the whole time? Like Okada is one that comes to mind where nobody's pissed at Okada having the title really. I mean people would say Hogan. I think people got used to seeing Hogan as the guy. ZM Punk. Goldberg.
00:53:05
Speaker
that's true when Goldberg had it no but like we weren't really mad at the time yeah no at the time I think it was it was what people wanted so there are examples of it but there are there are also a lot of times like I think a lot of people after WrestleMania 30 after Daniel Bryan won the title I think a lot of people did have the feeling of like he got hurt and he had to let go of the title
00:53:28
Speaker
I think there's a lot of people who felt like, well, that's kind of a good thing because we were worried we were going to have to see the ugly side after the year long story of him winning it where people realize, ah, the fun part was the chase. So I don't know. I mean, the thing is.
00:53:45
Speaker
I think he's happier where he's at. And by that, I mean John Moxley. And he feels like he's doing something new and exciting. And maybe we'll get the absolute best out of him and we'll see if he because he's going to help elevate that brand along with Jericho, whether people want to admit it or not. Having Jericho, having Moxley is just as important to the growth of the brand as having the Bucks and Kenny and Cody involved.
00:54:13
Speaker
Oh, I completely agree with you and I completely understand if TNT wants Jericho to be the first person to hold that belt. Yeah, let's talk about that because the other few that they're setting up is going to be between Hangman and Jericho for the AEW Championship. And how are you feeling about that? I think that's awesome. Hangman deserves a huge match. I mean, honestly, if I had to pick a favorite wrestler in AEW, it is probably Adam Page.
00:54:43
Speaker
right now? I think it is. Like if I had to pick a single wrestler, like yeah, I love the best friends. I love a lot of these wrestlers. I love Omega. But there's something so exciting about getting to see hangman hangman's rise to a top guy or getting like they've been grooming him for this position the last couple of years.
00:55:02
Speaker
Oh yeah, and Cody has made it clear that he said that Hangman Page is the future of pro wrestling.
00:55:17
Speaker
It should be, right? I assume they're not doing that at the fight for the fallen. Yeah, no, I think that they're doing that at all out here in Chicago. You just gave me goosebumps again that that would be the main event. Look at this. Look at this. When does WWE give me goosebumps? Sometimes, like the Becky Lynch moment.
00:55:35
Speaker
So, do you have a problem? What are the pros and cons of Jericho winning? What are the pros and cons of Hangman winning? Being the first AEW champion. By the way, talk about the belt and how awesome that fucking looks. Oh yeah, biggest heel of the night was Bret Hart versus the hard cam.
00:55:57
Speaker
Bret Hart goes to reveal that title and he holds it the wrong way so the camera can't pick up the belt. And then right as the camera switches to that, he moves to the other way so the camera once again misses the belt and then he puts it down. And we saw that belt for approximately one and a half seconds.
00:56:18
Speaker
As far as the title itself, I think it looks cool as shit. It looks like, to me, my first thought was, this looks like the UFC title. And then when I finally got a second viewing of it, it looks like they just meshed the UFC title and the New Japan title into one thing, made the AEW title. I think it's a pretty sweet looking belt.
00:56:37
Speaker
I agree. And I thought the exact same thing. I thought it looked like the UFC title and the IWGP championship. So good. We're on the same page. Yeah. And I mean, based on us looking at it that way, that must have been what they were going for. Cause it really is just both of those pushed into one. Yeah. So going back to my question, as far as first AEW champion, who would you prefer? What are the pros and cons of each guy winning the title?
00:57:02
Speaker
This is a brand new show that's going to be trying to get viewers. If viewers find out that Kenny Omega, or not Kenny Omega, I'm sorry, Chris Jericho is the first champion, I think his name will add some respect to that title. Right off the bat. I think this is an example of a man can help make the title.
00:57:20
Speaker
What would you say if somebody like all snarky came at you and said, so they're just gonna do with the AEW Championship, what they do with the WWE title, which is they're gonna give it to a old guy who's passed his prime and shouldn't be champion? I don't think Jericho's passed his prime yet.
00:57:38
Speaker
I would say the same thing. I've seen a lot of people online trying to throw shade at AEW for putting Jericho in a championship spot. And I would argue that he's nothing like fucking Brock Lesnar or the Undertaker or Triple H. Like shut the fuck up. That's not even close to the same thing.
00:57:55
Speaker
Jericho during his last WWE run was a full time guy.
Hangman Page as AEW Champion
00:58:01
Speaker
He was working house shows. He went to New Japan after he left WWE, reinvented himself, and is now one of the, if not the primary face of a new wrestling promotion.
00:58:13
Speaker
If he wins the title, it's fine. It's not burying young talent. It's not killing the company at the get go. I don't know where these, this must be people who are only WWE fans who are intimidated at the idea of AEW having a guy of that caliber be the champ.
00:58:30
Speaker
I would be okay with it if, you know, he beats Hangman the first time and maybe Jericho holds it for a while and maybe down the line Hangman gets a rematch and is the guy to take it from Jericho. Right. I think, you know, build Hangman up, let him have some really cool matches, let people, you know, a new audience get to fall in love with Hangman Page. What would be the pros of making Hangman the first AEW champion?
00:58:57
Speaker
I mean, it shows a lot of confidence in the guy. I mean, he's got a good look. He looks like a pro wrestler. He looks like your traditional pro wrestler, but moves like a new pro wrestler. Right. You know, he's a high spot guy, but looks like he could just fight main event style.
00:59:14
Speaker
And you know that he can have a damn good match with Jericho. I think he would be kind of like what happened in the early parts of this show, where like, especially with like the Japanese women's match, no one, for the most part, a lot of the crowd didn't know who any of those people were. And as that match went on, the crowd got hotter and hotter as they realized these people are fucking awesome. And I think if you let Hangman just work, show why we fell in love with Hangman.
00:59:39
Speaker
That's gonna make people fall in love with him too. I agree. So we've run down double or nothing. Any other stories, whatever, before we move on to the rest of the weekend for you? It was just really great getting to walk out of a building where everybody left happy. Same with All In, right? Yeah. All In, once again, I think All In's gonna have a little bit different vibe because
01:00:04
Speaker
I don't want to say that this show felt less important because it's fucking important. Like this is a big fucking show for them. But all in once again is just like superstar versus superstar over and over again. Their goal was to show us matches we had never seen before. And this like some matches at the beginning, like the last half of the show was all bangers. And the first half was a lot of people having to win the audience over, which they did.
01:00:32
Speaker
but it wasn't just like all in where that crowd was screaming the whole night. This was like a little more subdued, but once it hit the Cody match, the crowd was hot the rest of the night. So your night didn't end with devil or nothing. Holy fuck, I totally forgot we still had, we hit an hour and I just realized like, oh my God, we're not just at the breakfast yet, we're at the next show. Yeah. So I go immediately when that's over, go record with the curtain jerks.
01:01:00
Speaker
Then me and a guy that's a friend of theirs named Aubrey, we're both heading to this death mat or this no ring match show. The ticket to suburban fight pros show listed. It just said the Sahara event center. So, you know, all of us being not from Las Vegas assume. Oh, Sahara Sahara event center, the casino.
01:01:23
Speaker
Uh-uh. Uh-uh. We take this Uber and I quickly realize, oh, we're not in the nicest part of town anymore. This is not where the strip can get shady. Oh, yeah. And where we were was literally a roller roller hockey rink.
01:01:42
Speaker
next to a violin store in a pretty seedy part of town. But there were enough neckbeards hanging out in front that you felt safe, because you can't kill all the neckbeards at once. And you have to assume that some of us are faster than others at running.
01:02:01
Speaker
I'd be somewhere in the middle. So we get into the show. The show is not in this roller rink. It is in like an upper part that overlooks a roller rink. So it's in a much, it's a long room. And before you go in, there are these papers plastered all over the walls that say, warning, you are entering a dangerous pro wrestling event.
01:02:27
Speaker
and basically a long list of reasons of why they are not gonna be held liable if you get fucked up in a no ring show where the action is literally coming to you over and over again, whether you want it or not. And did GCW bother doing anything like this when we saw them in the back of a Foreman Mills? That guy with the corn t-shirt and the joint behind his ear. He gave us that warning that some shit might fly at us.
01:02:56
Speaker
But the the card of this show, I hadn't heard of a lot of these guys. The first match was one percent. Royce Isaacs and Jor-El Nelson versus Jimmy Lloyd and Chris Ross, which we know Jimmy Lloyd. He got a pair of scissors stuck in his chin recently and we saw him at GCW.
01:03:17
Speaker
Only in pro wrestling can you say you may remember Jimmy Lloyd from having a pair of scissors stuck in his throat recently? Which he is selling a shirt that's his bloody face and on the back it says scissors can't kill me.
01:03:33
Speaker
And this show, I tried to start towards the front where it was happening and quickly realized, oh no. This show was sold out, Derek. This is a packed, small room that's long. And the match just starts going. And this is basically a match where the referee is constantly yelling this at you. Get the fuck out of the way! What the fuck are you doing? Get the fuck out of the way!
01:03:58
Speaker
You're constantly being screamed at. And as this man screamed this at me, the match started following me, Derek. I am trying to walk away from this match, and everywhere I walk, there are four men fighting behind me, following me. I jumped out of the way as a man was thrown downstairs towards me. And then I moved, and then they just started throwing him towards me more, and I basically just ran away, because I was about to get crushed by four men.
01:04:26
Speaker
And we know you're not above running away from a fight. No, I will. Yeah, that's what I was saying. Like I got practicing for if I have to run away from danger after this show gets out. Because, you know, the show didn't start until after midnight. Were you tired at all walking into this? No, because I had Thursday and Friday of just sitting around naked sleeping. I was so ready for the weekend. Like everybody was like burned out from all, you know, double or nothing and drinking all weekend. Fresh is a daisy, Derek. Fresh is a daisy.
01:04:58
Speaker
So next, Chris Bay versus Matt Cross. This room is so weird and there's all these really nice couches and there's a barber chair in the middle of the floor. Like you can tell this is like typically a kind of hip place to hang out. Like where it's like kind of weird where it's like, yeah, you can sit here and drink a beer in a barber chair. And at one point Chris Bay puts Matt Cross on the barber chair and spins it really fast. And every time he comes around kicks him right in the chest.
01:05:28
Speaker
And he throws him over, there's a room with no one in it, where there's a pool table, a dart board, some chairs and shit, and people are just constantly chasing the match. That's what this room is, you chase the wrestling match. Like you're watching a real fight where people are going all over the place and the crowd of people wants to watch. Exactly, and that's why I found a perfect spot where I didn't start at the front, I started in the middle so that I could migrate with it as it came to me.
01:05:56
Speaker
I had never been to a no ring show. I always thought these shows looked awkward. It is definitely a fun experience. This wasn't a death match in the sense that there was blood and shit. It felt like you were in the middle of a crowded bar while two dudes are fighting and you were constantly about to be hit by them.
01:06:18
Speaker
It's a really unique experience. But the guy who owned the place, I kept seeing him go, please don't break the couches, don't break the couches. And then they smashed some folding chairs and I just heard him under his breath go, I'm not getting the deposit back on those. And all I could think is you had no idea what you booked in this room, did you? That's never happening again. Next match, Priscilla Kelly, Orange Cassidy, Marco Stunt.
01:06:48
Speaker
Yeah, I saw some video from this. I believe at one point Priscilla Kelly threw some darts at Marco's stunt. But watching Orange Cassidy, I posted this video online. This happened right in front of me. Orange Cassidy grabs Marco by the hair and you hear Marco go, ah, that's my hair.
01:07:07
Speaker
And then they take turns forearming him in the face and he's just spinning in circles like a top as they forearm him. That was fun as shit. Main event, Nick Gage versus Darby Allen. So excited. Had my good spot waiting for him to come to me. They literally never left the front of the room. They were the only match of the night that had never migrated.
01:07:30
Speaker
Did that make you a little upset that they never got closer to you? A little sad, I didn't see it. I ran into our buddies from La Pelle Yeah. I ended up getting a shirt from them. So awesome. I did a double take at it. I now own a La Pelle Yeah shirt that is that photo of Post Malone and the Undertaker.
01:07:49
Speaker
That's the only item I got this weekend, and it is fucking awesome. You guys need to check out lapel yazz stuff. They have some really, really amazing wrestling merch. So you said you didn't get as close to Nick Gage as you wanted to, but I think you made up for that the next day, didn't you? That is true. Me and the king finally had a chat. Well, you'd had a chat with him at Southern Underground Pro, isn't that right? Yeah, this one got to go a little longer and was a little more fun. Did he remember you at all? No, no way.
01:08:19
Speaker
I didn't even tell him that we had met at Southern Underground Pro or anything, so I just went into it like this was the first time he was meeting me. So this show, it's eight o'clock in the morning, I go to Joey Janela's spring breakfast. Okay, I go to Caesar's Palace where my ticket says it is, I get there, find a staff member who says, oh, that's not here. So now I have to catch a fucking cab to go to a different place across town.
01:08:49
Speaker
pain in the ass, never bought a ticket to Starcast though. So I got into this show for $20, the breakfast. I was supposed to have to buy that ticket, no one checked and I was hoping they wouldn't. So I ate breakfast and got this next two hours for $20.
01:09:06
Speaker
It was awesome. So I get in, there's the breakfast. Oh, when I get to this new hotel though, I'm looking for the room and I'm trying to find somebody to ask. And as I walk over to ask somebody how to get there, fat ass Masa beats me to the guy.
01:09:22
Speaker
and asked him for directions. I was like, I'm pretty sure me and you were going to the same place. So me and fat ass Masa got to walk around the Tuscany Hotel together looking for this conference room to eat breakfast. Were you just a team together? Was it just you two? Two ladies ended up joining us as we got on the elevator.
01:09:43
Speaker
Okay. But as we get on, like, Fat Ass Moss is just like, so what hotel are you staying at? And it's just like she was having a regular conversation. And that was fun. I felt like I was part of something there. Were you wearing your Mossa pin that you got from All In Weekend? I wasn't, but this time he gave us something different. He had trading cards made of himself. Oh, shit. And he gave us all trading cards.
01:10:07
Speaker
Nice! So that was awesome. Get to the Janela show though. They open it up. We get the breakfast. Janela's sitting at the front of the room behind a table with a microphone and it is just him. I get my food and go to the front of the room because it's just it's open seating. There's probably 30 or 40 people at the thing.
01:10:27
Speaker
And I sat up front directly in front of Janelle because I was by myself and just sat at a table of strangers as close to the stage as possible. Right. And Janelle is just sitting there like looking hungover sitting there with a microphone and is just like, yeah, nobody showed up. It's just me. There were there were supposed to be like 12 wrestlers at this thing and it is just Joey Janelle at this point. So he's just up there basically stream a conscious with a microphone for a long time.
01:10:59
Speaker
How was the breakfast? The breakfast was shitty, Derek. It was not. But Janela asked, he's like, he's like, why did any of you come to this? And I said, I came because I'm curious what Nick Gage eats. And Janela goes, yeah, probably tar and tree branches.
01:11:23
Speaker
But then gradually some more wrestlers started showing up. Marco Stunt showed up and him and his brother got on stage with him. Let's see, then Mance Warner, the CZW champ, got up there. And honestly, it was just like a comedy show of Janela just being hilarious with a microphone for a while. Isn't that basically what you wanted though? That is what I wanted. But what's funny is no one realized that the show was going to be two hours.
01:11:48
Speaker
and that people- Oh, the breakfast? Oh, I don't think Janela realized he had to be on that stage for two hours. He had no idea that was getting ready to happen. All right. And at one point, he's like, how much time do I have left on this? And I looked at my phone and I said, an hour and 20 minutes. And I was- Also known as a movie.
01:12:13
Speaker
One thing I was bummed out about is I get there and obviously Nick Gage isn't there, so I'm like, fuck. He didn't show up because this is at eight o'clock in the morning and he just had a match that ended at 2.30 a.m., which I didn't mention. When my Uber driver came to pick me up from in front of the Sahara, she goes, oh, she goes, I'll be honest, I was pretty hesitant to come to this part of town. It's mostly just drug dealers and prostitutes.
01:12:39
Speaker
So as the show goes out the show was it got weird and it made me start Feeling like Joey Janela needs a pep talk
01:12:53
Speaker
Well, what do we got to say to Joey Janela to remind him that he's the fucking man because he got his own fucking breakfast event, obviously, but that a bunch of people because you wanted to see him. Right. I went there because I fucking love Joey Janela. And I don't know if the first time I saw Janela, I loved him, but he grew on me so much over time. He's such a fucking unique character in the world of pro wrestling. He is just like
01:13:19
Speaker
He's punk rock guy. He really feels like indie wrestling. Or like very indie wrestling as we would say sometimes. But I don't know, he almost had a vibe to him. It almost felt like he thought people didn't think he deserved to be an AEW.
01:13:41
Speaker
Well, if that's how he feels, I think he's wrong. And I think a good part of having success in pro wrestling, at least as a fan, is kind of cornering the market on whatever it is that you are and having a distinct personality and being a memorable character. And then, you know, the longer you do it, it seems like that you get better at the in-ring performance part of it. And that's just time.
Joey Janela's Wrestling Persona
01:14:06
Speaker
And I think the one thing that Janela for sure
01:14:10
Speaker
definitely has is he's cornered the market on that character. And he does it so fucking well. And as I recall, I mean, I'm sure you'll back me up on this sentiment, but he had like maybe a top two match at all in back in September. Oh, yeah, like under him and Hangman under the story of Cody versus Aldus. Like I loved that story the most. The match I enjoyed watching the most was Hangman Janela. That's what I'm saying. Yeah.
01:14:41
Speaker
I don't... I'll put it to you this way. As far as I'm concerned, Joey Janela definitely deserves to be an AEW. I think that that character is going to mesh well.
01:14:52
Speaker
with so many of the other guys that are there. I think there's great chemistry between him and Moxley. I think that down the road, there will be awesome chemistry between him and Jimmy Havoc. And I mean, the list goes on. I mean, shit, dude, like I want to see how his style meshes with some of the guys that aren't like him on any level that aren't the the hardcore deathmatch bad boy type characters.
01:15:17
Speaker
Well, like, things that made me sad in this show, like, were things just, he, and at one point, like, he started just being so open with everything that Mance Warner looked shocked and just goes, wow, you're really pulling back the curtain this morning, aren't you?
01:15:33
Speaker
and like said it genuinely because there was somebody asked him they said who do you think should be the first AEW champion and he's like me but he goes like and he said let's face it in two months I'm just gonna be a jobber over there and it seemed like in his voice he believed that I mean but it's there's a lot of people that aren't in AEW but they picked him
01:16:00
Speaker
right? They wanted him to be there that obviously they see the upside in him. He needs to start seeing that too. Cause this is once in a lifetime opportunity. There's a brand new wrestling promotion that's going to get a nice TV slot on TNT every week. And they want you to be a part of that. Like go make the most of that opportunity, man. There's people who would kill for this opportunity who aren't going to get it.
01:16:21
Speaker
And all he has to do is like he got over with us hard because he's fucking funny. He's unique. He's been put like he's got a good mind for wrestling like he obviously like he he talked about PCO and how he's basically responsible for that. Now he definitely shouldn't be down on himself man like that opportunity he's been given he earned and it's time to just go make the most out of it.
01:16:47
Speaker
And I think too, going from the main card to a battle royal probably hurt a little bit. Also when Kip Sabian got a singles match who is now dating his ex-girlfriend, who he still has to have as his valet.
01:17:04
Speaker
Unfortunately, that's part of the pro wrestling industry sometimes is having to have relationships with people that make you feel uncomfortable. But I don't know, man, I'll stand by what I said, which is that I'm a fan of Joey Janela. I think he has carved out his place in the pro wrestling world. And I think he just needs to keep working, man. Like I, as far as thinking about being an AEW jobber, I mean,
01:17:27
Speaker
I think even if that was the case, I think that's a better spot than a lot of people are ever gonna get in pro wrestling. And I think he can be so much more than that. Especially if they're already giving him time on screen with Moxley. They released that video of Moxley and Joey Janela having a moment together with that cigarette. So there's no, I don't think there's any reason for him to be down. Sky's the limit, it's what he does with it.
01:17:56
Speaker
And I don't want it to sound like this whole show was a bummer. Like, there were moments where I'm like, I don't want him to be sad because this guy, like, I don't want him to sabotage a good thing for himself. Like, he needs to see this through because I think he could be as huge as we all know he can be. And he does have a lot of fans, too. We know people beyond us who are big Joey Janelle marks. Yeah. And goddamn, though, this show is funny. At one point, he was talking about how he used to prank call Sandman.
01:18:27
Speaker
And then at one point, like, badass Masa walks up and shows him his phone. He's like, oh, Masa has somebody I can prank call. And then his eyes got big. And he goes, holy shit, it's Enzo Amore's number.
01:18:39
Speaker
Masa had Enzo's number. And then somebody goes, why does Masa have Enzo's number? And then somebody goes, Masa has everybody's number. So how'd the phone call play out? It's 830 in the morning at this point. And Joey Janela calls it and it goes to voicemail. And then somebody's like, try back.
01:19:03
Speaker
So it's Mance Warner, Joey Janela, and Marco Stunt on stage together. He tries back, and I'm close enough up front. He wasn't holding the microphone up to it, but I could still hear it happening. And you could hear Enzo's voice when he answered. He was like, hello?
Nick Gage's Dual Persona
01:19:19
Speaker
And it was clearly Enzo. And Janela immediately goes in. He's like, hey, man, it's Rick from down the street. And I'm having some problems. And you hear Enzo be like, OK, what?
01:19:32
Speaker
Like Enzo just immediately goes in with it. He doesn't like think it's a bullshit call. An unknown number called him twice and on the second try at 830 in the morning he picked up and Janela is pretending to be his neighbor who has clogged his shitter and it's overflowing all over his house and he needs a plunger.
01:19:53
Speaker
And Enzo is like, oh, man, I'm so sorry. I'm not at home right now. But there should be somebody at my house. So he's like, if you go knock on the door, somebody will go get it for you. And at this point, Marco Stunt and Mance Warner are holding their mouths, as well as a room full of 40 people trying to hold back laughter as Joey Janela's fucking prank calling Enzo Amore.
01:20:16
Speaker
that's awesome and he goes you know he's like I'm not a huge fan of him because you know we're both from Jersey and he's like there's two type of people from Jersey people like me and people like him and then it he's pauses for a minute goes fuck it he's like we'd probably end up being friends
01:20:35
Speaker
and he's just not happy about that fact. But then partway through the show, Nick Gage walks in and I'm so bummed because he's in the back of the show and they're like, Nick, you should come up on the mic and he just shakes his head no. Did you see what happened to me last night? He's just like, uh-uh, not doing it. So he's in the back and I try to get a glimpse at what Nick Gage is eating. All I could see was a mound of eggs.
01:21:00
Speaker
Which is normal. That's like a normal thing. I wish I had something better to look back on and tell you, but I look forward to that and I look back at Nick Gage and he is just standing, staring at the middle distance out the window for a long time. It looks like just thinking about life. And then Nick Gage finally decides, okay, I'll get on stage with these guys. And he walks up and he looks at Marco Stunt's brother and goes, what the fuck are you doing on this stage?
01:21:26
Speaker
He goes, he's like, I'm serious, get the fuck off the stage. You've been in the business for what, two years? What happened to earning it? Get the fuck off the stage. And it got really quiet and serious and Logan stunt left.
01:21:42
Speaker
and sat in the crowd. Literally, he left. He left and went and sat in the crowd because Nick Gage made him leave. And it was fine up until that point. And at this point, throughout this whole show, Janela, it is seriously like we're sitting there watching a fucking shoot interview.
01:21:58
Speaker
Like, he is shooting on everybody. Like, anybody that he has a story about, he is telling it. And Nick Gage, they're like, Nick, you tell a story. And he's like, nah. He's like, I'd try and keep it kayfabe. I don't tell stories. And that's all he says. And then he's like, just kind of sitting there for a while. And then somebody says awesome like David Arquette. Like, refers to David Arquette as awesome. And he's like, he's like, fuck that dude.
01:22:25
Speaker
He goes, it just became really bitter and angry. He's like, you know who's awesome? Schlack. Do you know Schlack? He goes, Schlack's awesome. OK. And he's like, I don't remember what he said about our cat. But he goes, OK, I will tell a story.
01:22:38
Speaker
And this is the only story Nick Gage told that night, but he's like, the other day, he's like, I don't do Twitter and all that shit. He goes, I heard that somebody, or he said, I heard that Arquette was talking shit and saying that he would fight me in UFC. That he would fight me anywhere. And he goes, I didn't go on Twitter in a column or anything. He goes, I pulled my phone out and I sent him a text that just said, I heard you were talking shit. And he said, he immediately received a string of apologies from David Arquette.
01:23:12
Speaker
He's like, dude's a bitch. But yeah, you can tell me Nick wouldn't hear that. Nick Gage. He's such a badass on stage and in character. And when you meet that dude, I know I don't know if he'd want me saying this once again, talking to him after the show. He might be one of the sweetest pro wrestlers I've ever fucking met in my life. He would probably carve my head up with a pizza cutter for saying that. But he just seems like
01:23:39
Speaker
When you tell him about matches you've enjoyed, he seems so humbled and genuinely happy that you enjoy his work and that you're getting something out of it. And I talked to him about the GCW show once again in Chicago, and he was telling me how much that door spot hurt him.
01:23:58
Speaker
Is he still suffering the effects? He didn't say that, but when I described that spot and I was like, yeah, I ended up with your blood all over me, he just goes, that fucking hurt. He's like, that spot hurt. Because if you remember, he went off of basically a balcony through a door.
01:24:14
Speaker
You got your picture taken with the guy though. And I was, I was, the first time I met him, I was never gonna do it, but I was just like, I gotta do it. And I said, would you mind if I, could we get a picture together? And he just goes, dude, I never mind. Let's do it. And he went to throw up like his gang symbol, but he's like, no, no, no, let's do this. And then held out his middle finger and I was like, fuck yeah. So I got, but hearing him say, let's do this. And I was like, yes, let's do this, Nick. And he's just such a good dude. Like I am such a fucking Nick Gage Mark now.
Vegas Trip Recap and Wrestling Community
01:24:46
Speaker
So this is basically how you ended your weekend in Vegas, was double birds with Nick Gage. Yes, and that fucking Janela breakfast man, it was so weird, everything that was going. No one could have given me a breakfast like that but Joey Janela.
01:25:02
Speaker
You know like are you glad you went a hundred percent honestly one of the highlights of the weekend because it was there were so many real moments of Janela but also he's just a funny fucking dude so sitting there watching him just shoot for two hours was fucking hilarious getting to meet gauge getting to do all that it was eat a shitty breakfast while talking to these guys was fun as hell well it sounds like you had a great trip dude I'm glad you made it back safe
01:25:28
Speaker
Oh, I was so happy. Oh, and then on the way home, they searched my bags. I look behind me. Renee Young is in line behind me also getting her bags searched. Well, is it true that Renee and Dean or Mox or whatever you want to fucking call them, they live in Vegas? Yeah, they're from Vegas. So I'm assuming she was probably flying to wherever Raw was the next night.
01:25:50
Speaker
Yeah, probably. Or that night, even, because that was Monday. No, no, that was Sunday still. Sunday. Got my days mixed up. But yeah, I'm sure that's where she was going. And then also James Storm was on my airplane.
01:26:02
Speaker
So another big pro wrestling weekend has come and gone. Memories have been made. And we've done an hour and a half. This is a special episode, man. Well, you know, we talked for 15 minutes about nothing before we got to the show. So I'm sure there's going to be a lot of people tuning in just because I'm going to put AEW or Double or Nothing in the title and immediately leave us.
01:26:23
Speaker
I hope not. It's part of the experience. You went to Vegas. This is just as important as anything else. And they know what they're getting into if they listen to this podcast. Exactly. Are you telling me that I'm not supposed to give Pitbull concert and Kenny Omega versus Jericho the same amount of time talking about it? Fuck you. And the imagery of you being naked all day and taking a bunch of baths? Yeah, I took a shit ton of baths. Fuck you guys. Take a bath once in a while. It's great. Read a book in a bath.
01:26:52
Speaker
Do you have any other stories or comments or cool things to add before we do our usual shtick and get the hell out of here? I think... Let me look at my notes real quick and see if I'm leaving anything off. Okay, yeah, here are a couple things. Last two things I need to end this on. One, Dean Ambrose is going to fucking New Japan because his contract doesn't start until October with AEW. How cool is that that we're gonna get to see a Dean match over there?
01:27:19
Speaker
I think the only way we're gonna get over this is if any time one of us says Dean Ambrose, the other one goes, who's Dean Ambrose? Okay, yeah, that's true. It's Jon Moxley. Jon Moxley is fighting Juice Robinson. I hope this isn't a one-off since we have until October. I would love if we got a Nido Moxley match or, you know, just any number of other people on that call. Suzuki versus Moxley? Uh, uh, Derek.
01:28:08

So you were shitting next to a pirate? And I was just like, can I take a picture of this? Is this okay? I want a picture of this peg under this hole. And then you didn't know if your sound was on and the camera sound would go off? It was too much pressure, so I just let me have that one. That was just for me. Yeah, you earned it.

Give a shout out to everybody, man. Music, city, horror, battle. Yeah. Yeah. This was, yeah, this was, uh, we did, we talked a lot on this one. This was a long one, but I am, you know, I'm still living it. I mean, my fucking hockey team lost the first game of the Stanley cup and I'm unfazed because I'm still in wrestle mode a little bit where I'm not like that sad because pro wrestling is doing so well right now. Absolutely. So.

We haven't had an opportunity. If you haven't already, hop on over to iTunes, give us five stars, leave us a nice review. As always, if you leave us the review, you can suggest something for us to watch or check out and we'll talk about it on the podcast just for you. Supposedly we're supposed to get some fan fiction at some point. That is true. I've been told that there are a couple of guys that are willing to do this for us.

something funny, a good story, or a predetermined podcast at gmail.com. Garrett, anything else you would like to add for this special episode? Doesn't it just feel good to leave a pro wrestling related weekend where everything seemed good, where it feels like hope is in the horizon, like, you know, where just the future seems so bright? That has felt so rare that it's almost been like the holographic Charizard of pro wrestling experiences. Hit our goddamn music.
