Podcasting Setup and Pickle Anecdotes

00:00:35
Speaker
Hey, everybody. Welcome to another episode of Predetermine a Pro Wrestling Hangout. Garrett Callender and Chris Miggs here. You're you're ah you're quiet, Garrett. You're. ah Yeah, we're in ah we in a weird setup. we're doing I don't know if you knew this, Chris. When Derek and I first recorded this, I did it in the standing position in my bedroom and paced back and forth with a microphone in my hand because we didn't see each other. And now I am standing in my kitchen. as I do this, because my dad is staying with us this week in my room that I do podcasting from. The baby is asleep and Leah is gone. So, here we are. I hope it sounds okay. Thank you. You sound good. You got a you got a microphone, um but you just, you can't get too excited about blood and guts verbally.
00:01:30
Speaker
I cannot. ah But I can pull whatever you ask you ask for out of the fridge. Okay. Any remarks? I could. um I could use ah some a pickle. mean i Just yeah just a second.
00:01:50
Speaker
and For all the listeners because this is terrible podcasting Garrett Garrett did actually just grab a jar of pickles. sweet heat bread and butter pickle chips. They were right in the front, very easy to find. That sounds nice, actually. Sweet heat. and like it like I like I like some sweet heat. I like a good ah zesty pickle. Speaking of pickles, MJF. Just kidding. His sister does have a pickle company. um What is it called? I didn't know that. His sister has a pickle company? Oh, man. Did you never watch the ah press conferences after the paper views?
00:02:25
Speaker
I mean, I knew he was eating pickles. i guess i didn't I guess I missed that it was his sister's pickles. They all have his face on it, and it's like his family's kosher pickle company. And he ah he always plugs the pickles, and he always takes a bite of ones. Like, that's a fucking good pickle. And that's the plug for the company. He always does it in the... ah I don't think he's ever done it on AEW television, but he's done it in multiple of those. Gotcha. I will be ordering some of MJF's pickles. I think that's a thing that I have to do. I think they're made nearby you, right? Like there's families out there. ah Long Island. Yeah. I mean, I, yeah, we could probably drive out and

Political and Wrestling Event Discussions

00:03:03
Speaker
pick them up. Here's, that was actually my favorite thing from his promo last night because I also agree that real America is, well, I mean, I think it's Queens, but Long Island is close enough. Uh,
00:03:18
Speaker
the ironic thing The ironic thing is that ah Long Island is probably one of the more Republican sections of, particularly in this sort of New York and surrounding areas. So um the people who talk about real America being like the Midwest or some shit, um would all like they would agree with the people from Long Island about a bunch of stuff, but they would also disagree about so much stuff. In fact, it'd probably be good if they met each other. they might both stopped voting Republican if they actually knew who each other was and had like talked with one another. That's interesting. See, now that's ah there's a there's a political show you should pitch to somebody.
00:04:04
Speaker
Republican city people versus rural Tennessee. um But yeah, real America, I agree with the MJF. Real America is not, you know, not national. That was a fun promo. I mean, I don't know if we even said this. We said it last week on the show, though, that I i was headed to Blood and Guts this week. Nashville finally got a ah makeup show for the the dud we got last time with with Jeff Jarrett went on the Leatherface Strap. And yeah, but I don't know. I love that opening that actually almost felt like.
00:04:38
Speaker
kind of the, I don't know, like a WWE opening. I feel like a flag falling from the ceiling and Rusev and John Cena arguing about countries. I don't know, that just feels like a very WWE thing, but I kind of did miss a little bit. Yeah, interesting. when Jeff Jarrett prominently involved again. I saw Jeff Jarrett involved twice yesterday, ended up on Rampage as well. Oh, that's interesting. I guess I can six now i was say hit you with some spoilers, but by the time this podcast comes out, like you're probably going to be a couple hours away from Rampage. being Well, but but but for people who are so you can I guess you can skip ahead if you're listening to this and you haven't seen Rampage yet.
00:05:17
Speaker
I actually i don't know, but I'm willing to be spoiled um because honestly, who cares? um who's Who am I seeing? So this is actually interesting, right? So they announced a couple of days ago that there's going to be a royal rampage on Rampage. And that the winner gets the world title shot at grand slam facts and I are attending. Um, we might be as visible as you were on TV, Garrett. Um, ah Was I fairly visible? Well, again, you were fairly visible if one knew that you were wearing a brat shirt in neon green. Cause that really made you stick out in a sea of wrestling fans.
00:06:00
Speaker
Yeah, I also wore the the neon green kinda brat colored sting hat you got me. So I was, I mean, I looked like

Wrestling Event Highlights and Humor

00:06:09
Speaker
a parking attendant. I i was there to not get hit by a car. ah You actually, you did direct some traffic. It was very easy for you to get out of the parking lot. Cause you were just like, no, no, no. And you like, it's like waved your friends through. And they were like, I don't think that guy works here. Suckers. Let's run through.
00:06:32
Speaker
ah do Are you asking me who was in the Royal Rampage or are you asking me who won? I don't care. was in i mean i know from From the promos, I know Kip Sabian was in it. Holy shit. Has Kip Sabian looked like that for as long as... I don't think for that long. It's hard. He just he just randomly appears on TV and every time he looks different. and It's unclear how long he's been that person once you see him. If this isn't already a meme, it absolutely should be. Kip Sabian, the second he came out, who popped into my mind, you've seen Happy Gilmore. Do you remember Ben Stiller as the orderly that's terrorizing his grandmother? They look the exact same. Maybe that's who maybe that's his next character. Great character. Great Ben Stiller character. Honestly, Kip Sabian, when he wrestled in the Royal Rampage,
00:07:27
Speaker
Kinda surprised, I forgot like he could wrestle. He's pretty good. He can, he's a solid hand. Nothing nothing wrong with Kip Sabian. Did he get tossed out by Nick Wayne? Fuck, like it seemed like it took so long for anyone to get eliminated that I don't even remember who was first. like When the first elimination came, I couldn't believe that it was the first elimination. It was only a 20-person rumble. I'm trying to remember who all started, and then it was um Cesaro. It was Brody.
00:08:05
Speaker
It was, because it's still a twitterer they started with four guys, so they did two in each ring to start it, because we did have the double ring. We had, fuck, Commander. nice And one other guy, I don't remember, very early on though, like maybe fifth guy to come out as Ishii. So you're quickly getting the matchup of Ishii and Brody King. Great, love it. Good times. Butcher comes out and now you're getting Butcher and Brody taking on Ishii, where it's kind of a, you know, them ganging up on him. I don't know, it was just nice seeing Ishii. Butcher and Brody, that should be, I feel like that could be a tag team and it could also be a band. And I like that it could be both. That they could just like, just start being, I don't know if it's, they gotta to be able to find a drummer, right?
00:09:01
Speaker
Someone on the roster has got to be a drummer. I'm trying to think, like, who somebody in wrestling has drummed before, right? Had to have. Right. because We're not putting Hulk Hogan on base. No, we're just not. Butchers is a basis, right? Butcher is Lee. He was lead guitarist and every time I die. Oh, OK. I was OK. I apologize. I apologize. I thought I thought you were bass player. Sorry. um So you're saying but you have butchers on guitar. I think Birdie King's just a singer though, right? He is. Yeah, he's the front man. I don't know if he actually plays anything. I feel like Darby. Darby looks like he could he could drummer bass. That seems plausible. He got got to find that rhythm section, but I think that's not Jared.
00:09:51
Speaker
Just playing in that guitar. Um, no, but I think I like the idea of it being both a band and a wrestling staple.
00:10:01
Speaker
I don't think we've

Music, Tag Teams, and Inside Jokes

00:10:02
Speaker
seen that since the free birds just were over my shoulder right now, but the free birds, they weren't real. I mean, Michael Hayes had a band, but they weren't like, I don't like Terry Gordy wasn't playing drums. You know, that's true. These are like two legitimate. I mean, God's hate just did this huge show. And I think we talked about it last week. They were opening for the band Speed, which right now, hardcore music is just really having a nice moment where a lot of hardcore bands just getting over.
00:10:34
Speaker
And with the regular public, like I feel like there's a few bands out there that just have gotten so big that they've gotten out of the hardcore scene and they're kind of exploding. But well the world's pretty angry right now for a bunch of reasons. So this feels like a moment for hardcore. That actually absolutely makes sense. Yeah. A lot of rage. That somebody like a band like Knocked Loose would excel at a Coachella because I don't need to hear songs about how the world's good right now. I need to release some anger. Yeah. Makes sense. And I mean, you know who the, I think the real answer is here. um The Misfits did wrestle in WCW in the late nineties. So I think you just, whoever,
00:11:18
Speaker
The other guys and the, the basis and the drummer and the misfits, I think back up, they're just, and and they were basically Vampiro's little guys. So it kind of works, right? They can take a couple of bumps, but they're mostly Brody and Butcher's little guys. And those guys just go out and kill people. That sounds like a good team. Book a Tony con, book it. Because at this point, does Butcher even, is Blade still there? I feel like I just see Butcher solo a lot. I think Blade's been hurt. Okay. And Ally, I think her contract expired and she's also, but she's also been hurt and acting and just not, um, she has, she actually, I think I sent this to you, she has a horror movie podcast now with Alison Kay. Oh, fun.
00:12:06
Speaker
You know, she's, I guess, i I think they cover unerotic thrillers though, Garrett, so it's not competition. Yeah, you, ah hey, listen to the erotic thriller club. You can find it where you listen to your podcast and YouTube. We're not on YouTube. I don't know why we never did it. We'd have a lot of content for YouTube. We could be on YouTube. We could we could consider that at some point. We could cut out, ah we could cut only the good parts of the episodes into little short videos. Chris, funny question about this podcast because I think right now at the point that we're at with this podcast, the people listening to the people listening and we love you to death for it. This is this is fun for us. We love that you're here at all. How often if you run into somebody and the podcast comes up.
00:12:54
Speaker
Do you tell them they should listen? Or are you at a point where you're like, man, if you weren't here the last five years, I don't know if this is even worth jumping into. Really depends on the person, you know, there are some people who are going to roll with things and other people I just don't want to explain penis cocaine to Chris. You get the listeners can't see, but I am not in my head. vigorous You're vigorously nodding. Yes. You just have to consider if they hear the penis cocaine episode, will they be offended. That's I feel like even or just confused or just too deeply confused, you know to understand. Don't get me wrong. I'm not embarrassed of the penis cocaine. I'm not afraid to talk about the penis cocaine. So before the show we were at the the bar across the street and I was talking to this nice couple Zach and Sarah
00:13:50
Speaker
which they do know the name of the podcast, so it's entirely possible they're listening right now. right But when they know that they are the name of a Ben Fold song. oh i The first time they told me their name, I did not clock that, but the second time they told me, because i I'll never remember somebody's name the first time they tell it to me, when they said that, it was like, oh, Ben Fold song, I'll remember that forever. Yeah. And they were like, uh-huh. Yes. And we understand everyone does that to us. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. It seemed like I wasn't unique in knowing that that's a bit. I mean, there are a lot. Yeah. A lot of people listen to that record. It's not it was not an uncommon record for people our age in the early 2000s. That tour he's on right now seems kind of cool. The the paper airplane tour.
00:14:40
Speaker
It does, it does, I had to find an excuse, it's been a long time since I've seen him play, so maybe maybe it's time.

Creative Audience Participation Ideas

00:14:45
Speaker
Maybe this is the one. But either way, I was talking to them, and ah I don't know, we were obviously so sitting there talking wrestling, because everyone around that area at that moment is wearing wrestling t-shirts.
00:14:58
Speaker
And I don't remember, I think Deathmatch came up or something, and I mentioned, well, I didn't used to watch it, but I do a wrestling podcast, and but I started watching it for that, and then that turned into into, oh, what's your podcast? And I really had a long pause before I told them, and it was a noticeable pause, where they're like, you don't wanna tell me? And it's like, well, it's not that, but, and I didn't tell them the whole thing. I was just like, there's a lot of insight. Like, I was like, we've had a weird place where there's so many inside references from doing this show for like five years that I feel like it's hard to jump in now. And is that true? Do you run into that when you talk about this show to others? I don't know. I'm not because I'm not sure who I i will talk about the show and I don't know who goes and listens to it then. Look, I think the references I think if you if you're curious about the references, you can always ask us. We're here.
00:15:55
Speaker
We're happy to explain why we but occasionally reference Richard Dreyfus. It's fine. We'll tell you. that See, there are ah there's a lot of Richard Dreyfus on this pot. as soon The last one, I think he's in the title or something. jesus I don't even remember where that started. That's how long ago that the Richard Dreyfus stuff happened. Something about Mr. Holland's opus and Jimmy Lloyd and Jordan Oliver, I don't remember. i truly don't I just know he's a character on this show and even things like casually dropping Robert De Niro if somebody came in on the first one like just that is a first episode last week boy by the fuck are where does Robert den new you know where it is cuz Cole col Cole's name of the kid mr. Holland's Opus and Radrick it's something like that yeah
00:16:50
Speaker
Anyway, the show here's this guys here's another pitch though. i'm I'm not generally a fantasy booker, but I feel like um'm just I guess I'm just generating ideas this week. So for those that aren't aware, Ben Fould's current tour is called the Paper Airplane Tour. And what he's doing is basically he um is getting fans in the crowd just like throw paper airplanes at the stage. And then he picks up a bunch of them and makes a set list out of it. And first of all, brilliant idea, great way to make sure people buy front row tickets. Cause you know, you don't know how good your arm is going to be. So you you get that first couple of rows, you're definitely getting it up there. um I think this is how, I think that's exactly how Tony Khan should book collision.
00:17:36
Speaker
right? I mean at this point why not right? Why not just especially you know that little e-sports arena in Arlington they could they could all get from the crowd they could all get paper airplanes into the ring so I think Tony Khan just comes out they throw paper airplanes at him uh maybe he puts a list of wrestlers on the screen who are like in the building just so everyone knows like You know, MJF's not here tonight. You're not getting like MJF against Osprey again, but you just throw stuff in the ring and Tony Khan's like, all right, it's, let's see, the Butcher against the Commander. That's up first. Butcher and Commander, sounds great. And they just go.
00:18:21
Speaker
I am not totally against this. I actually really do like this, but it's um our our buddies at the the We Watch Wrestling podcast. I can't take credit for this thought, but they always talked about how in pro wrestling, every wrestler ever is behind that curtain. You never know who's gonna come out of the curtain of wrestling. Everyone who's ever stepped foot in a ring is behind that curtain. and I don't like that we have to break that by showing me who's actually behind that curtain. Okay. Maybe you don't. Maybe you just say, look, throw stuff in and Tony Khan, if he sees like someone who's not there, he K babes and he's like, Oh no, he's suspended tonight. Sorry.
00:19:02
Speaker
He keeps opening a list of names like the Saudi Prince must be here tonight because these folks are deceased. that i Fuck, who are some of the ones the Saudi Prince wanted to come with? a Yoko Zuna. Yoko Zuna that was ultimate warrior. Yeah. They got the Yoko Zuna, right? They got was like Fala Ba or something. I don't know. You could paint Brian Cage up as the ultimate warrior. Yeah. Why not? be fine that's part that's part of it and here's the thing if they get one like that and they're like I don't know if we can put this on national television that's what our wages for just yeah if if the match happens it sucks throw it on YouTube yeah I mean it's honestly probably get more views yeah why not who cares it's just wrestling you know it's just wrestling
00:19:57
Speaker
So we were we haven't even gotten into blood and guts yet, which was, that was a very fun show, but I am kind of stuck here on Rampage now, ah that we we started with the Royal Rampage. You forget how Rampage, Rampage really is.

Event Fatigue and Highlights

00:20:13
Speaker
It's very Rampage-y. Very Rampage-y, yeah. Like even if you're like, oh, a Royal Rumble on Rampage, still a little Rampage-y. Oh, did for sure. especially they start with that, a good portion of the crowd did leave. Even for a Royal Rumble, because, you know, we had just sat through blood and guts and that was kind of an exhausting match from being in the arena for it. But then when you get to, I'm trying to even remember who the second match was after that, it was like Layla Hirsch maybe versus
00:20:53
Speaker
I don't remember, it was a ladies match, it was quick. it was It was a ladies match and it was quick. And it was just like, as each little tiny match happened, more and more people left. And even though we do a wrestling podcast and I should sit through everything for this show, even as I got to the, I quote, main event of Rampage. What's the Rampage main event? It was a four-way tag match. And trying to remember who all was in it. There was Vincent and his big guy. In Dutch. Vincent in Dutch. Then we had... Private party? Private party, good guess. This seems like a match that private party would be in.
00:21:40
Speaker
The other guys, okay, maybe you know these guys. I did i was not familiar with them. They were very 80s. They weren't called the outsiders. Were they the Outlanders? Oh, the Outrunners. Outrunners. They were delightful. Entrance alone. 10 out of 10. Yeah, there is they they were actually, they were doing a bit a few weeks ago where they were Dalton Castle's boys. Which was pretty funny. And then Dalton got hurt again, unfortunately. Are you fucking kidding me? Yeah, Roddy Strong need him in the head. So. Jesus Christ. No, yeah, that's kind of what happened. Roddy Strong hit him way too hard in the head and just got a concussion. The Outrunners are funny. I like them. I'm a fan.
00:22:21
Speaker
Do we know them from anywhere else? Were they in Ring of Honor? Were they in any indies we've seen? Like a spring break? Like a clusterfuck? I have no idea. i Yeah, i've never I had never seen them before. Apparently they were in the NWA a little bit. A little bit of OVW. Okay. A little bit of OVW. So they fought an uphill battle to get to Rampage. And I will say this. for an exhausted crowd, those guys got the Papa Rampage. All right. Oh, and apparently the fourth team in that was Kyle Fletcher and Roosh. Which is what I was gonna get to, that as soon as you saw them come out, I didn't even see the end of the match, but I know they won. You are correct. You are correct. Cage match tells me you are correct. I looked at my buddy and i was like, well,
00:23:15
Speaker
I don't even have to be here. Those two are going to win that team has Kyle Fletcher and Roosh. Like these are two real wrestler. Like that's really offensive to say, to be honest, but it's like the two biggest names in the thing are on the same team. Those guys are going to win. And this match is probably going to be seven minutes. Yeah. Well, that's the thing. I feel like rampage has gotten that point where it's really just like,
00:23:40
Speaker
who's Who's on the show and are you excited to see them? Where it's like, oh, it's been a bit. I'm really, really excited to watch someone. Or you're like, no, this is probably going to be a perfectly acceptable match, but I do not care. Nothing interesting is going to happen. And I'm just going to fast forward. It's kind of where we're at with the rampage. Lance Archer did have a fun thing though, where he came he said, and coming to the ring with his opponent, and he walked to the ring with his opponent already unconscious over his shoulders, rolled him into the ring, they started the match, and he continued to beat the shit out of a guy who was already his captive, like held captive by him before it started, power bombed him,
00:24:23
Speaker
pretty good power bomber choke slam I don't remember either way the crowd wanted more and he obliged did it a couple more times match over uh guy never I don't even the guy got offense and so but that was a thing they they killed dime with yeah well and I'm glad aunt Lance Archer's still doing his thing I'm glad he's still gainfully employed they're gonna be in Texas like all summer so he's probably like they're like yeah I guess we should use Lance Archer again for a few months Honestly, they should, he's good. They should, he's delightful. And you know what, if you're gonna have a rampage, instead of just having two-minute matches, I guess you had this rumble, so you know like that's what people are tuning in for.
00:25:04
Speaker
why wouldn't you just put Lance Archer out there and have him fight a luchador? Have like a cool match. though He's capable of cool matches. We've seen it happen. I think they do that sometimes. They do some weird stuff. Actually, maybe there should be more two-minute matches on Rampage where you're just like, I kind of want to watch Lance Archer murder someone. Like, who cares? Just Lance Archer murder someone for two minutes. It's a good time. So you did you haven't you haven't spoiled this for me yet. Who am I seeing challenge for the title at Grand Slam? Is there anybody that makes sense that would fight Swerve?
00:25:42
Speaker
ah Well. but the most obvious people were in the blood and guts. So was someone in blood and guts, but also the Royal Rampage? Correct. Oh, okay. Well, then I have- And the second they walked out, we're like, oh, he's winning. He's the winner. Well, then there's only, I have two guesses. Yep. Adam Page or Darby Allen. So Adam Page did come out but is somebody who interrupted and fucked over Jeff Jarrett in like the final four people. Nice. The winner is Darby Allen.
00:26:30
Speaker
Interesting. Which will be fun. that's v well a first of all Darby's great I'm here here for it seeing him get a title shot I actually think that's kind of interesting because I think that I mean I think there's a decent shot Danielson wins I feel like that kind of telegraph swerve but maybe not maybe um maybe Dan Nielsen wants to wrestle Darby. You know what, have we seen that? and They have to have, no? I don't think we have. there's Those are two insane men that are the same height. Yeah, I mean, Darby Allen, I don't think was wrestling before he, Dan Nielsen went to w WWE.
00:27:18
Speaker
And so meaning before, I'm just meaning since they've been here, there was never a dynamite where they fought for the TNT title or like because Daniels and was like really putting guys over there for like two years. I don't think it's happened. I really don't think it's happened. Honestly, him versus him versus Daniel Center, are both. Yeah, I mean, him versus Swerve is a match, I think that's happened a bunch and like defy and evolve and stuff. um But like checking cage match, but I don't think he's wrestled Danielson um at all.
00:27:58
Speaker
Wait, so he's gonna get a world title shot, but he's also getting the TNT title shot shortly before in Wembley. That's right. Which, who knows what stipulations they're putting on that thing. Somebody's gonna get very hurt. Yeah, almost certainly. like They've wrestled, Darby and Swerve have wrestled ah three singles matches in AEW. And before that, they had wrestled four other singles matches in Defy, PCW Ultra, and AAW. They were also at a three in a three way together with Fritch Swan in AAW.
00:28:44
Speaker
And also, this is this is a match that that happened in 2017 in MLW. ah Shane Strickland and John Hennigan, AKA Johnny TV, AKA Johnny, whatever they call him now, um against Darby Allen and Jimmy Havoc. o It's just a funny one. That's the thing that happened. Indie wrestling is wild. It is. I feel like it used to be wilder. I miss it a little bit, but I kind of do. I mean, I know that we're basically getting to see the big Marvel production version of indie wrestling now, but I still miss those little rooms where we were seeing these insanely talented people all the time. Like our life was going to those shows for a few years. Mm hmm.
00:29:39
Speaker
Yeah, we're the biggest thing we went to would be like at like at like the Hammerstein ballroom or something. So, yeah, I don't know. It's just, you know, I'm happy we got to live through those times. Yeah, I think, yeah, again, i I've said this a few times, I do think retrospectively, we're going to look back at those as sort of like, and like 2017 and 2018 is sort of a golden era. And like, when like our kids are old enough to be like, oh, let's go like look watch an AEW, and there we'll be like, well, you know, back in my day, and that's that's what we'll be back in my day, our kids about is like, oh, well, you know, in 2016 at the Hammerstein Ballroom, that was real, you know, that was the the real stuff. This is good, but, you know. yeah you You watch your stadium wrestling,
00:30:34
Speaker
e Ah, so how did Blood and Guts come off on TV? How did the crowd seem? Did they seem nice? How was Nashville? How'd we look? crap Well, um Nashville looked great, um including that guy in the front row wearing the We Want Marty shirt. I haven't watched the show back and I still don't believe you. I don't believe you. It is real. There is a man in front of the left, the left side ring, left side, if you're looking
00:31:06
Speaker
at the, from the hard camera. um Yeah, he was he was rocking the We Want Marty shirt and... um What was the prize if you wore that and got on TV? You got to be his roommate in a two-bedroom in North Hollywood. I think he was gonna follow you on Instagram or something. It was just as good. What do you think the pluses and minuses are of rooming with Marty's girl other than the obvious?
00:31:36
Speaker
that you're an accessory to. Um, well, I'm. Allegedly, not even allegedly. He he admitted it. he admitted He admitted it, but he was like it was legal where it happened. So it's just. Everything's legal in England, you know. I think, look. The upside is that Marty's got some umbrellas lying around. You're never going to get rained on. Exactly. There's always an umbrella. A lot of cool masks, if you're into that.
00:32:12
Speaker
um
00:32:16
Speaker
On the flip side. He's. He's still got some ROH title belts and he really should get rid of them. He he just never sent them back to Sinclair and. You know. To have to see that well, yeah I don't even think that's the worst. Flip Gordon still might come around. Oh yeah, Flip Gordon's going to hang out and he's going to stay there.
00:32:45
Speaker
There's no way he showers.
00:32:49
Speaker
That's a problem. Or he comes to use your shower. It's always occupied by Flip Gordon because he doesn't have his and and Planet Fitness told him he couldn't do with it do it there anymore. He comes, he's incredibly filthy and then he spends like two days in the shower getting clean. You're unclear and now a man could spend that long in the shower. He's not wrestling anywhere. Where's this man becoming pig pen in your mind? Flip Gordon? Yeah. He's wrestling in Mexico right now. Oh, is he which company is he in? I forget. I think he's doing CMLL. Well, that's pretty good. Yeah. I'm imagining he's getting like dirty in like a bull ring in Tijuana.
00:33:37
Speaker
He's just he's he's just in Tijuana. He's doing flips onto like dirt. And people are like, yeah, whatever. I don't know. Flip Gordon's very filthy now. I don't know if I condone bull fighting, but if the you know I don't want to see swords going into the bull. However, if the the only game is, can Flip Gordon flip over the bull? Can he acrobat around the bull? This might actually be the best use of Flip Gordon I've ever seen. like This is a pay-per-view I would buy. This is $13.99. Don't try and go a cent higher. That is my threshold.
00:34:13
Speaker
i I like it. I i also would pay $13.99 if they were just like, Flip Gordon's gonna flip over some bulls. it ah It basically becomes he's either doing kind of a jackass spinoff or wild boys spinoff. But we we just want Flip Gordon to do stunts. Wrestling is not for me anymore. Yeah, I mean, perhaps I can imagine, you know, I could also just imagine he's someone I can imagine doing lots of weird stuff. Like, could we get some slap fighting with Flip Gordon? Maybe some bare knuckle boxing, you know, just. Just the.
00:34:52
Speaker
ah the full Triller TV universe, you know?
00:35:00
Speaker
That's the true cinematic universe, it's whatever's left on Triller. Mm-hmm. Yeah. Women's rugby, Flip Gordon. Who knows, TNT might be trying to get women's rugby now that NBA is gone.

Media Rights and Wrestling Matches

00:35:15
Speaker
There's just gonna be AEW women's rugby and equalizer too.
00:35:22
Speaker
Yeah, it's interesting. I think, I guess my thought is that, that stuff makes it more likely that AEW is going to get a deal, but it might not increase the value too much just because they're like, we have to spend money on something else too. So we actually, we need to keep some dollars in our pocket because it can't just be you guys and like young Sheldon. So. My dad was just telling me about this, the sale of the and NBA, but it sounded like it was between a lot of networks. He had mentioned NBC, ABC, ESPN, Prime, and maybe a fifth. Yeah, there's several packages. And what happened was they TNT skipped the first two packages, thinking they could bid less on the less on the lower package.
00:36:17
Speaker
an Amazon came in and was like, fuck you and paid what's probably too much money in some objective sense, but who cares? um And they basically um like outbid everyone. And then there was some weird thing where Warner Brothers was going to try to match them, but then they were like, You guys don't like you paying the same money as Amazon isn't a match because Amazon has like wider availability or something. It was complicated and telling me that it was like $77 billion dollars or like something in the $70 billion dollar range for like however many year contract. Like in total between like I thought so too. I thought it was like because I thought it was like basically like two something billion.
00:37:06
Speaker
per network. That's why I didn't know like did somebody get like really premium shit and somebody is getting I don't I can't even tell you who the worst and NBA team is the Brooklyn Nets. The Nets versus what the Clippers like you get that game for one billion and 60 billion gets you the playoffs. Maybe. um I guess no that's I mean, 70, even over the bunch of years, sounds too high, but it's going to it's a lot of billions. Seventeen makes sense. Maybe. No, it would be even more than that, though. I don't know. I'm Googling.
00:37:47
Speaker
um 76 billion. over how many networks though? The NBA has agreed to terms on its new media deals, a record 11 year agreement worth 76 billion. Oh, that's why, okay. that were Over 11 years, yeah. That's why it's longer than I thought, that's what it is, yeah. Yeah, I knew it was gonna be like 10 or 15 somewhere in there, but yeah, 11 years, 76 billion. and That makes sense, right? Because three networks, two plus billion each, you get to like seven a year, 11 times the, yeah, okay. Okay, so that's reasonable?
00:38:22
Speaker
that sounds That sounds reasonable given that length of period. um yeah It's crazy. I don't know. I guess it's the only thing people watch anymore together other than wrestling. They can worry about that $76 billion. All I'm worried about is, do I save 50 bucks a month on my AEW pay-per-views now with it going to Max? That'd be great. if they If they're like, yeah, we got to give them the money for Max. um That's an extra concert a month for us. Is concert goers, that's that's a little a little money just freed up that I don't have to use to watch Revolution. yeah Think about how many more t-shirts I can buy. One a month, I can buy one extra t-shirt.
00:39:05
Speaker
Two, two, if I'm getting a good deal, you know, if it's like slingshot house, with maybe more. If slingshot house is running like a $15 deal or even like $3, if they're running a $3, 16 cent shirt that I want, I can buy like 16 of them with what I've saved on AEW.
00:39:24
Speaker
It was their shirt that I wore to AEW last night. That's why I stood out with the bright green smoking skull brat shirt. um was So the opening match, the actual first match we got last night was Suzuki and Jericho, right? Or am I missing something before that? No, you're right. Or just like talking to... Was it just me or was that fun as hell? That was great. um I also enjoyed you guys with the chant of Chop Forever. That was funny. Well played. I loved there was a moment where the crowd kind of had a lull in cheering for what was happening because the same thing had been happening. ah and I never got sick of it. I was loving it. But also like we've been cheering for the same thing for kind of a lengthy match.
00:40:09
Speaker
And at one point, I don't know if this showed up on TV, but Jericho, who was the one getting hit, turned and gave the crowd like a, make some fucking noise. Exactly what you want to be happening to me is happening to me. I'm bleeding from my nipples. Cheer.
00:40:30
Speaker
He's a born performer. Yeah. um No, I thought it was a good match. It was pretty fun. That's kind of what I wanted from that, to your point. um Suzuki hit Jericho so hard his chest was bleeding. I enjoyed it. I enjoyed it. Broke the fingers. He did Suzuki doing the little Jericho wave and saying hi. that Honestly, to me, that could have been like a ah quick mid-card pay-per-view match. Like that's something that I wouldn't have been mad about on a forbidden door.
00:41:02
Speaker
Absolutely, it is funny though, my daughter was watching, it was either Rampage or Collision, I was like fast forwarding through and she's like, why is Chris Jericho always on the show? And so this is like, yeah, a lot of people ask that. She's truly a wrestling fan now. She understands.
00:41:25
Speaker
i'm I'm still not sick of the guy. I mean, I got sick of the guy, but this gimmick just works for me. I know we've talked about it a bunch on here now, but it continues to work. Yeah, he that's the thing about Jericho, is that he just always comes back around at some point, no matter how bad it gets with him. You're like, eh, he'll be fine eventually. It's going to be terrible for for a while, but well he always comes back around and he did it again. Good for him. And in a way, like everybody's annoyed with him, but we also don't have to hear Judas anymore. What's the problem? We do not have to hear Judas. It's delightful. It's fun. i don't know i had I had a blast with that. As far as the actual blood and guts match, I don't think that it's the best one they've ever done. No. But I thought it was very fun, I thought. it
00:42:21
Speaker
I did the rewatch that I did, I just saw that on YouTube, AEW basically posted the last 23 minutes of it. They posted from the moment like a minute or two before Swerve comes out. And that's all they post. They just posted that and its entirety on YouTube. Oh, wow. but So that's all I rewatched, because honestly, that's when. Business really picks up, which is the case with any war games matches, you know, you're just kind of killing time till they're all in there. But having been at one now, I think the problem with this match being at it live is there is truly so much happening that you're not looking at the right thing a lot of the time.
00:43:05
Speaker
and you do get a little exhausted, putting it on TV, immediately having the commentators talk about a thing and the the camera focusing on, this is the best thing happening right now in the rain. Because there were some like kind of sloppy moments. And for some reason, your eye wants to immediately go to the guy who's trying to set up something, but it's fucking up. And instead, like, Mark Briscoe's over here doing something cool, but I'm not seeing that because I'm watching...
00:43:36
Speaker
I don't know, Darby Allen looking for the gas can, not being able to find it, having to talk to a couple referees, and then watching two referees climb under the ring, trying to find it with him. ah There were just like little moments where like, why am I looking at this? But for some reason, this is where my eye has been drawn. Yeah, that I've always assumed that was, it's interesting, because I've always assumed that would be an issue with a war game style match, is that,
00:44:06
Speaker
It's hard to focus. You've got the two rings. You've also got to contend with the cage, right? Which is kind of screwing up your line of vision a little bit. Like that's kind of hard enough as it is watching a match, but then when it's, you you add that to, well, now there's 10 guys in the ring doing stuff everywhere. Your, and your line of vision is all screwed up. That always just seems like. It just always does definitely seem like it's a better idea to be in person for blood and guts than it is in execution. I feel like you're confirming that. Not that you, again, not that you're against it. And as for a dynamite in Nashville, you're like, well, it's pretty good. We got blood and guts, but.
00:44:46
Speaker
I did have a very good time. I will say once, yeah, once Swerve came out, Hangman doing the ultimate heel shit of, I was doing the na na dance, Chris. We all say we wouldn't do the na na dance live. I was na na dancing and he took that from me. He took that from me. I've waited so long to get to do that na na dance. Didn't get to do it. Didn't get to do it. I do think one of the issues with, so like, On the one hand, I really like when AEW gets in the zone where it's kind of like no one's really the heel, no one's really the face, it's the stories are a little bit
00:45:28
Speaker
um You know, shades of gray, right? You know, like hangman's the heel here, but is he really the heel? Like swerves the one that broke into the dude's house. Also hangman's the one that's trying to fight back against the elite, but he's aligned with them because he's just trying to get, you know, like there's a lot of interesting aspects to that. It kind of felt like it muddled blood and guts from a like emotional catharsis perspective, like blood and guts felt more like a step along the path to a bunch of stuff than the climax to anything, um which I think just not that that's the end of the world, right? Like it it happens and you tell the stories you're gonna tell, um but I think it just does hurt the like.
00:46:14
Speaker
overall impact at the end when you're like, oh, we just set up a couple of matches out of this blood and guts. And that was actually probably the point. It didn't feel like much of a win. It's like, OK, AW wins, but it didn't really feel like it was. You know, oh, wow, they have fully defeated the elite. All of that completely nailed everything like that's 100 percent it. And I didn't even consider that last night that like, why does this one seem a little lesser? But as you say that that makes complete sense. Yeah, it's as you're watching this is set up for four different stories. And when the end game of what should be a big blow off of a story is that it ends with a TNT title match, it wimbly in the mid guard. Yeah. Well, that was the other thing, right? Is that like Darby's like Darby using the like Matt Jackson quitting um to save
00:47:12
Speaker
that Jack Perry would traditionally be a baby face move, right? Like saving your dude, your other dude so he doesn't get lit on fire. And I know it's not an executive move. It was a paperwork a like or not wanting to do paperwork and ah get caught up in like legal minutia down the line. I think it was eat corporate heel shit. Okay, and look, yeah, I mean, I think you can, again, doesn't have to be, ah I'm not trying to say that everything needs to perfectly align with the traditional face and heel roll. It just, I think, made, it felt a little weird at the end to me where I'm like, oh, that's kind of an odd, it's kind of an odd way to lay it out.
00:47:51
Speaker
You're not wrong. You're not wrong at all. But as far as saying some of the positives from it, because it did it did have positives. Like I didn't have a bad time. I don't want it to make it seem like here are all the negatives. But when Swerve finally got in. the the stapler spot that was so fun that was so fun the standoff and when you see all these you know all of them stapling them the imagery of what was if you describe out loud what actually happened to somebody very problematic um did not seem like racially very cool
00:48:27
Speaker
what was What was happening? But it did give him Hulk strength. He gets out and then takes out all five guys. And it was just such a nice little cherry on top of each move. the like And do you get a staple in the head and you get one in the cheek. And you knew Okada wasn't taking anything. on Okay, on TV, could you see did Okada end up in any thumbtacks? like they were all kind of rolling around at him. He had to, right? He must've gotten a little bit. He played with, he put the thumbtacks into Caster's mouth.
00:48:59
Speaker
um Yeah, that was interesting. that That was just one of the generally interesting things, just like Okada in a American garbage thumbtack match was just kind of interesting. Oh, I guess he kind of got that with Anarchy in the Arena too. But this, I think took that up a ah level. Yeah. Loved, um Jeff Jarrett, not just turning, but but like the fact that it was in Tennessee and Jarrett did the, has pulled off the ultimate in the, like, cause the whole thing with Tennessee, right? Is in Tennessee wrestling, right? Is they would always flip back and forth. It's like, who cares? We need Lawler to be a babyface. I know he shaved someone's head a week ago, but now he's a good guy again. They would just, they just wouldn't give a shit.
00:49:47
Speaker
um So of course it's Jeff Jarrett who seamlessly went from being like the biggest chicken shit for like two years straight to being like, Oh, everyone loves him now. He's the inspirational leader. He's like him hitting so a guy with a guitar is a big moment. Like it's just so delightful that of course Jarrett in Tennessee of all places is the one that pulled that off and just like, of course he's getting the big baby face pop. Cause they're like, yeah, we don't really care what happened the last few years. You're Jeff Jarrett, Tennessee.
00:50:17
Speaker
That was great, that was great, that was great. it got As a childhood Jeff Jarrett fan, getting to see somebody get slap nuts with a guitar is never gonna make me sad. Yeah, especially if he's there to save Swerve and then Nana's out there helping. and So seeing the team of Billy Gunn, Prince Nana and Jeff Jarrett trying to save the champion, wild mad lib sentence. ah Have you told your have you told your dad you got to see the the guy with the guitar from your childhood that he had to take you to see, too?
00:50:52
Speaker
I told him that this morning, first thing I was like, you're not gonna believe what I saw last night. And then more fun, because we sat down and watched- What was his response? He was like, no, how old is he? And then we looked up his age. And as we're sitting in there, even more fun though, was I did show Ozzy some of the stuff, because I didn't get to watch Dynamite with him last night, and he needs to do the Na Na dance. That was his first disappointment as a wrestling fan was he had started doing the dance and then when Hangman took him out, his hands dropped and his mouth opened and he just looked at me like, i what happened? I don't get to do the thing. That really warmed my heart. But then getting my father having to explain choke on this slap nuts to my wife.
00:51:45
Speaker
ah I also had to express explain brat to my dad today and that what my wife said from the other room that was really truly the conversation of the year.
00:52:00
Speaker
um dad you asking what brat is is definitely very much not brat it's it's very not brat you're killing brat summer um uh darby's spot didn't end up being as intense as i thought it was gonna be but from my seat it looked very cool i would imagine so you had it because you were a little bit above the cage right Yes, yeah. I would imagine that looked amazing from that angle of just Darby kind of on the rail, on on the trussle and just kind of coming across and dropping is pretty.
00:52:36
Speaker
Pretty sweet. That was one that rewatching, it didn't quite have the impact on television as it did in person. ah but I still thought it was good. the um One of the acclaimed guys got a got the big like bump off the side of the cage through the tables. That was on the opposite side. I was thinking of you there because you were on the opposite side. Right. So that I couldn't. They did do a good job of having a lot of places to watch on the screen. So you could always see the TV feed if you wanted. What else like what else am I missing from that? I feel like Mark Briscoe was really the MVP of bleeding and just getting hurt.
00:53:18
Speaker
Mark is great. I love that they've kind of gotten him back on TV. Him cutting those promos with Orange Cassidy and Ishii and Kyle O'Reilly is a delight and it's been good. It's been good to have him around. um That's another good reason to like, just again, fast forward through collision, because you just might get a Mark Briscoe promo and you're like, oh, perfect. Overall, do I think maybe I overpaid for my ticket a little bit? A little bit. but I did get a good dynamite. It did make up for it. I at least got like a pay-per-view level dynamite, that version of dynamite. Yeah, you got to see Camille debut? Yeah, I have no i had no idea who that is. and Honestly, like i I still don't. From what I understand, she was an NWA.
00:54:07
Speaker
Well, yes, she was the NWA Women's Champion for I think a Roman Reigns length of time. But I mostly remember her because she was Aldis's valet towards the end of like in that early like late 2018 period where power was starting and Cody did the match, the second match with Aldis. That's where I remember her. ah Okay. Okay. Yeah, so I've definitely been in the same room as her. I've seen her wrestle almost certainly. Yeah. That being said, like she looks cool as hell. She looks cool as hell, yeah. the crowd I honestly couldn't tell if the crowd knew who she was. she kind of That's kind of a deep cut.
00:54:52
Speaker
A little bit. She's I mean, I think she's kind of because she's like big. And I mean, she's kind of impressive looking. So even if you don't either know who she is or don't quite remember who she is, like she's still kind of cool looking. um It seems like they're going for like Sean and Diesel with her, which is kind of funny. And like in Sasha, that's kind of fun. Yeah. So at what point do I get Camille versus Sawyer wreck? Tall Queen versus Tall Queen. Probably gonna be a while, I think. I'm gonna swear Rex is getting signed, you know? Oh, yeah. That's signer. Just signer. She's great. Well, she could at least do like an ROH dark match, just so you can get that. That doesn't sound unreasonable. That seems very reasonable to me that Sawyer Wreck could do an ROH match. Allie Catches done him. You know? I believe... I'm surprised. Yeah, I believe in her.
00:55:51
Speaker
Yeah, it feels like she hasn't done anything interesting recently, Sawyer. um She's been out hurt. Oh, OK. I don't know if because she broke her wrist and I just because the last thing she was supposed to do that was going to be really exciting for this podcast was she was going to be Hardway Heaters opponent in Indianapolis for the for K.O.B.K. and Indy. Oh. I think that was going to be the main event, even possibly a dream match for you. And if they didn't have that set as the main event, it was in my heart. Cause he even apologized to me. He came and broke it to me in person that it was going to be somewhere that I wasn't going to be able to attend.
00:56:33
Speaker
It's like, I'm sorry, Garrett. Sorry. So we didn't book this in Nashville, but ah yeah, it ended up getting out happening because I don't think she was healed in time. So I don't know when she'll. So it could still happen in Nashville. Oh, God, I hope so. All right, everybody, we're going to go ahead and wrap it up there. Sorry for the late release this week. This episode was kind of plagued with tough technical difficulties and we had to end recording this one early and then it took me forever to edit it. I'm so sorry. We'll be back later this week and we're definitely going to be talking about the guys going to blood sport over the weekend and probably some other things. All right, everybody. Thanks so much for listening. Hit our goddamn music. like
