Introduction to DIY Goalie Podcast

00:00:06
Speaker
Welcome to the DIY goalie podcast, where hosts and goalie coaches, Nathan Park and Connor Monday share their insights on how to become a better goalie. Goalies, how are we doing today? Oh, welcome to another

Episode Topics Overview

00:00:22
Speaker
episode.
00:00:22
Speaker
of the DIY goalie podcast about six minutes into trying to get this episode going. So ah thank you for that Connor. Um, we will have to put together a blooper reel for you guys, although that might have to be an R rated episode. Um, but we are finally getting going. Hopefully Connor's worked it out of his sense.
00:00:47
Speaker
um So um we have got a couple interesting topics for you

Underused Goalie Tools & Volunteer Coaching

00:00:52
Speaker
guys today. um I am going to be talking about one of the most underused tools that goalies have in their arsenal and Connor is going to be talking about how to properly be a goalie parent volunteering as a coach. So a couple, uh, pretty interesting topics today. And, uh, we will dive right into it after I, uh, try and ask Connor how he's doing and we'll, uh, get through that. Oh, that blue for real should not come out. It just paints me in a bad light.
00:01:27
Speaker
it really does um i'm good we're all good here um but yeah i mean things are kind of winding down not necessarily winding down for us for a little bit but uh kind of starting to just sort of, but yeah. um My segment today, I am probably the least qualified person to be talking about this, considering I'm not exactly a goalie parent, but I've had my fair share of goalie parents. So this is more of a ah kind of just, here's what I observe and here's how I think people should act, whether people actually do. It's totally up to them. But I mean, i it it's it it's it's it's an interesting kind of article or segment that I was actually listening to from ah
00:02:07
Speaker
our Friend of the show David Hutchinson from in gold magazine and I thought so we can kind of expand on that a little bit because we're kind of going through our own thing when it comes to goalie parents who are Volunteer goalie coaches on a team. So I think we can kind of add our two cents into that as well Yeah, we'll come at it from the angle of the coaching side of things and what we would like to see from you guys, if you're taking on that role. Yeah. All right. So I'll dive into mine first.

Importance of Body Positioning in Goalkeeping

00:02:36
Speaker
Um, so one of the things that I like to coach my goalies and I don't see a lot of this happening or being talked about. And I think it's a very underused tool is being able to use our body, like
00:02:54
Speaker
Our body, so basically when i I say our body, I'm talking about basically from the waist to the shoulders, kind of you know our torso, I guess, and it offers our biggest area of coverage as goalies, right? um So we take up the most amount of net with or our body. And the thing is, is goalies don't use it enough. Don't use it to the full extent that they should to help them.
00:03:21
Speaker
make saves, move properly, control the game, all that stuff. So wanted to go through a few things that you guys should be thinking about when you are at practice and working into your games and all that stuff. And kind of the benefits of using your body to, you know, the fullest extent that you can when you're playing goal. So um first off,
00:03:46
Speaker
When we are making our saves, um leaning the body is one thing that I think is a very underused art. um When we lean into our saves, we can get to that puck quicker because it's not just our hand or our arm that's moving there. It's also our body as well. So now we have two ah two things moving towards that puck. It helps us get there quicker.
00:04:14
Speaker
Um, the other thing too, is it cuts off net? Like one thing I see a lot of goalies do, and they're not really conscious of it, but they'll do something where they drop down. Um, I dunno, you've probably seen this lots Connor, but a lot of goalies, younger goalies, I see they'll drop only one knee down. They keep one knee up.
00:04:33
Speaker
and kind of that you know half butterfly that from you know the early 2000s. And what that does is that actually pulls their body back away. So just so you can visualize it, if you try going down in your butterfly, you'll notice that your body's kind of upright, like nice and and tall and all that. And as soon as you lift one knee, you'll notice that your body shifts over to the other knee. And most of the time when goalies are making their saves like that,
00:05:02
Speaker
The knee that comes up is the one closest to the puck. So that means that their body is shifting away from that save. Now they're opening up more net, which is exactly the opposite of what we want to do as goalies.
00:05:16
Speaker
So if you guys are working on your save execution, you're working on your tracking, your warmup, all of that stuff, um, work on getting that body leaning into that save coming towards that pack. And again, it's just going to help you cover more net. It's going to help you get there quicker. And honestly, as goalies, those two things, if you can nail those two things down, your life becomes so much easier.
00:05:42
Speaker
is just I just coined it as shifting, just shifting the body yeah into that safe. um But I mean, like it's the same premise. right i The way that I explain it, it adds that extra kind of coverage or adds that extra um protection there, right? And I don't think it was necessarily a concept that was thought about when I was in my early days of coaching, but now we're starting to see it more and more happening. It's just like bringing that body down into a safe, even if it's something as simple as a blocker or glove save, it's still just kind of brain, just kind of emphasizing bringing in the excuse me, bringing down nose to puck.
00:06:23
Speaker
just a little bit more and, uh, and just bringing that, bring the body down towards it as well. I mean, you ever had a really good point that I've started to implement into when I'm, when I'm doing my coaching, this is kind of bringing that back shoulder down into the save as well as you're shifting your body into that safe. Yeah. Yeah. Shifting, leaning, whatever the terminology all kind of means the same thing. Um,
00:06:45
Speaker
But yeah, if you guys can really learn to do that, it'll help with that save execution. um The other thing that it does too is it really helps you guys with your recoveries. So if you lean into that save,
00:07:00
Speaker
um your body's already moving kind of towards where that puck is. And most of the time, if we're making our saves properly, the rebound's gonna go off into the corner or off to that side that the puck was shot to. So now your body's already starting to shift over to where we want to recover to our rebound. So it's it's kind of a double whammy. So not only does it help us make our save,
00:07:27
Speaker
But it helps us to get into a better position to recover because if you do lean properly, you're almost kind of like a quarter of the way through your you're body shift and rotation into your post save recovery. So now you can just make that movement nice and fluid. So it's like as you make your save, the puck comes off of contact.
00:07:51
Speaker
your body can carry that momentum through, finish its rotation, and then get that nice good recovery um to your rebound wherever it is. So just makes you a little bit quicker on your recoveries too. It makes your movements a little bit easier and a little bit more fluid. Because again, if we can eliminate any delays as a goalie, um or at least minimize the delays that we have, it may and makes your guys job a lot easier. um The other thing when it comes to using the body too, if you guys have done any sort of like box control work,
00:08:34
Speaker
Um, and if you don't know what box control is, we can, uh, link up like a YouTube video. We should probably make one ourselves, but, uh, there's, there's a few good box box control videos out there. Um, I think I mentioned, um, the Syracuse crunch one with the goalie coach there. And then, uh, Chris was good. Love good. Love skis when they they had done something like that. And I think, I don't remember what specific episode we referenced that in, but I know that we had referenced it in one of our, uh, one of our show notes.
00:09:04
Speaker
Yeah. So what the body lean or shift allows you to do is to control that box a lot more. So a lot of times goalies don't realize how small the net actually is from the puck's perspective, especially if you're a couple of steps off of your goal line. And if your hands are in front and your shoulders are in front,
00:09:27
Speaker
So that body lean really allows you to maximize that box control and kind of minimize your movement while doing so right so like I One of the biggest game changers for me in my junior career was when I really learned how to use that body. Cause you'd be surprised at how many body saves you can make just by leaning. Like that box is a lot smaller than people realize. And we don't have to move that much to cover the net. So a lot of the shots, I would probably argue like 70% of the shots we see.
00:10:06
Speaker
you could get to with your body just by leaning. And so the other benefit that that offers is it offers a lot more control. So rebound control is a lot easier with the body save, right? So if it's a shot that's kind of towards that blocker side, and it's in that weird spot that kind of handcuffs goalies a lot where they keep their blocker in tight um to to their body, but they're trying to make a blocker save,
00:10:36
Speaker
Well, ideally, instead of getting a blocker on that, keeping that play alive, even if you do control your rebound to the corner properly,

Forward Shoulder Projection and Save Efficiency

00:10:45
Speaker
instead, if we can shift that body and take that more kind of in, you know, the pec area or the shoulder area as opposed to the blocker.
00:10:55
Speaker
now we get a whistle. We get fresh legs, we kind of kill the momentum of the other team, and the play is kind of dead, right? So it allows us to control the game a lot better, um because I don't know about you guys, but in my opinion, if you asked me would I prefer getting a shot in the chest area or a shot to, you know, the hands or a stick or whatever,
00:11:19
Speaker
I'd be choosing chest every time right and I imagine it's the same with you guys it's usually the easiest save to control a rebound with and even if you don't necessarily control it on the initial save it usually pops kind of right in front of you and you can cover it pretty easily for the most part I mean obviously there's exceptions to that but so But yeah, so it also is one of those things too. If you can start to use your body situationally as well, it makes a big difference. So with their movements, we talk lots about it on the podcast. And if any of you out there are clients with us at True North, you're probably sick of hearing us say the word rotations, but
00:12:04
Speaker
If we can get our body around through a rotation before we push, it makes your life a lot easier. But the one thing I'll say about that is we work with goalies that we hammer this point of rotation home and they pull their body up and back when they do that rotation.
00:12:25
Speaker
So anytime we talk about using the body guys, whether it's movements or saves, we want to make sure those shoulders stay forward. So we're rotating with those shoulders forward and then through our push, we're leading with the hands and the shoulders and the head.
00:12:42
Speaker
And that's going to allow you to be in a spot to really be able to make your save when you get to your end, end point. So when we talk about using our body, that shoulder or our shoulders really need to be forward. And Connor kind of mentioned that a couple of minutes ago, um, that he was talking about one thing that he started implementing since it started me talking about it is bringing that shoulder forward into those saves or into those movements while we um perform them, right? And again, that's gonna help cut off that angle if we can lean forward, and I call it our forward diagonal. So basically you want those shoulders to go on a diagonal trajectory forward, because that helps us cut off that angle a lot more. And it's kind of the same when it comes to movements, when it comes to in tight play, anything like that. If we can project those shoulders forward and use that body,
00:13:41
Speaker
We've now made the net smaller because again with that box control, the further towards the puck we can get, the smaller that box is that is basically the net that the puck sees.
00:13:54
Speaker
So projecting those shoulders forward and helps us to cover more net, make those saves, helps us to move better, get across the net a little easier. And again, in tight, cause I'm going to hammer this point home since we just started working on in tight stuff with one of our organizations.
00:14:13
Speaker
and we've kind of been seeing this, um a lot of goalies, they don't bring their shoulders, especially the back shoulder around to square up to the puck and to make themselves big, right? And what that does, that leaves a lot of net open and it exposes them. And it's crazy the difference that it makes, just that subtle little shift of getting that shoulder forward, bringing that body,
00:14:41
Speaker
projected more towards that puck. If you guys can really figure out how to use your body properly I'm telling you, like that was probably one of the single biggest differences in my game in junior. And I wish I had learned it earlier, because I think it would have you know gone a lot further in my career. But I had a really good junior career once I started implementing the body lean and coming forward with the shoulders pretty much in every aspect of my game. Yeah, keeping keeping weight transfer forward
00:15:19
Speaker
projecting out just a little bit more. And then the same idea of making our saves in front of us by bringing our weight forward, bringing our body down forward towards the save makes it a lot easier for us and in the long run. And like Nathan had said, we'll get we'll get ah we'll get a video out ah about box control. Again, the Syracuse Crunch one, is ah it's a great video to watch. Highly recommend it that we'll have in the show notes probably again.
00:15:47
Speaker
um but yeah just when we talk about like tracking the puck and no save execution in front it's not about just bringing the head down over top over the save and having the hands out in front and again it's it's just it's just bringing that body down towards that save as well you know making our save in front of us and ah maybe exaggerating it a little bit by bringing that back shoulder down forward or bringing chest towards the save. But again, it's is we want we want our weight transfer to stay. We want our weight rather to stay forward. And then it just it just helps make make saves them longer. And yeah, and that's, that's just it, right? I mean, it's
00:16:31
Speaker
Just efficiency. Like I know way back when I think it was episode six, I had touched on using the body because that episode was all about being efficient, but yeah I wanted to dedicate a whole segment to this as opposed to just touching on it in and a, you know.
00:16:49
Speaker
let's say it's Well, like like you said at the start, it's such an under underutilized or under oh wondering under under under under thought about concept right or underthought about tool when it comes to save execution. right Because we hammer home so much tracking hands on front, nose down to say, well we don't think about what's between the shoulders and and the hips. right The logo, that's that's on That's on our jersey there, right? We just sit here down, right? And it's maybe you're bringing the body down for it a little bit. But you don't think about it as much as like how much of a difference it is is that you can start from hands down front, bringing the head down over to say maybe a slight rotation in your hands if you're making a save on the blocker side, for example, versus actually bringing bring the microphone down with me as well, versus actually bringing the body down to the save as well, right? And just kind of projecting forward, making the save in front of you.
00:17:47
Speaker
and by having first line defense, second line defense and third line defense is the way that I kind of describe it when making when making your save as well. yeah well and its It's amplified to when the body is used improperly. Like I see, there's two major things that I see. Like I talked about the legs staying up. So the body leaning away and that happens too. I noticed with some goalies, even if both knees stay down on the ice or even when they're standing and make a save.
00:18:20
Speaker
they can pull their body away but the other thing that I noticed too that hinders goalies is yes they bring their body towards the puck but they bring that shoulder back so they almost rotate themselves back and they actually open up that lane right so basically that shoulder is going from being in the way now they're rotating it back and now that lane opens up to be able to just basically go right by their their shoulder and
00:18:51
Speaker
you it basically looks like the goalie's just watching the puck go in like they kind of just watch as it goes right by them and yeah oh it's in the net right so again i go back to those forward diagonals if you guys can hammer in going forward and on a bit of a diagonal angle with your shoulders towards that puck and you compliment that with your head down to the puck and tracking and having your hands out in front saves become so easy with very little movement. You become so efficient and basically you have a consistent baseline that is hard to beat night in and night out. So make that your habit. That's my challenge to you guys this week. Yeah. Um, yeah, it's.
00:19:40
Speaker
When you see it in, when you see it in practice, being like, we can talk about it all that we want here, but once you actually see it in practice, like it makes, it makes a world of a, makes a world of a difference there. Um, well, uh, we've got a list of content to make in the off season at the facility. Now that we have access to that, I think we'll add that to the list is body shifts and leans and the differences that that can make.
00:20:05
Speaker
Yeah, um I'm going to plug this now because I think it's a good one because we have that we have two drills over at the diygoli dot.com that is in our arsenal of drills with tora with a true north goaltending. There's the body lean drill that's over the red line, right? Yeah. And then there's also the the other one where you have the net, like a smaller net or a net off to the side.
00:20:33
Speaker
Right. And you the goal is to try to make the same and get the pocket in that, not in, not in the back of our net, but in the other net, that's, that's off to the, off to the angle there. Yeah. So on that's good for that one too, is where the goalies off their angle a little bit. in yeah Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. So all of those will link up in the show notes, um, which will be at the DIY goalie.com slash pod 0 4 5 P O D 0 4 5. We'll link all that.
00:21:03
Speaker
Yeah, so there you go. Bonus drill of the month for everybody there. or Maybe we'll talk. Yeah, three of them. Bonus drills of the month. um Yeah, so.
00:21:16
Speaker
Hey, there we go. Well, I was wondering whether we were going to get one of those sound effects in. Oh, boy. Nathan has just an ah an article or not like ah and a set list of sound effects. and So not that we were planning on having them in here, but now they are. One of them is where their parents took me out. boy. Well done. Well done there, sir. Well done.
00:21:41
Speaker
um All right. Well, I guess first off, can't believe that we're at a 45 podcast episodes in seven weeks from it being a whole year.
00:21:52
Speaker
Wow. Wow. So we have some, we have some anniversary. We have some anniversaries coming up here. First year anniversary. We'll have WAB pod episode 50 coming out in five weeks. Well, and actually on the day that this episode airs will be number three zero for this guy. I'll be 30 on the day. o no Start, start planning a retirement home. Now we're on the decline.
00:22:21
Speaker
Wow, lots of exciting stuff happening over at the DIY Goalie and True North. um Speaking of exciting stuff, I'm going to do this live here is that I'm actually going to switch up my segment for today.

The Role of Video in Goalie Training

00:22:32
Speaker
And I'm doing this on the fly, because as we were talking about this, I thought that what I want to talk about and what I want to bring to the table kind of um kind of correlates to what to what to what you were talking about today. So well we'll we'll throw the goalie parent segment aside for today. We'll revisit it next next week. But I think the just the importance of video is is is a big one. So I think this kind of correlates nicely to
00:23:01
Speaker
to your segment and the fact that we use video a lot over at True North Goal Tending and just the benefits that come with it. I think it's a big one here for today.
00:23:14
Speaker
um So you the purpose of having video, um whether it's game video or practice video is to kind of gauge where you're at when it comes to ah how you think you how how you think you're playing on the ice, right? Because we all have a ah mental idea of how we think that we're doing in the net or how we think that we look rather when we're in the net where I think that I'm making my blocker save in front of you but me while my blocker's like six feet off my body going the other way. um True story. ah But it's it's it's it's a great tool to use and I think if you are a goalie coach or a goalie or a goalie parent that is not utilizing video to an aspect,
00:24:04
Speaker
then you're kind of just stunting your own development or so essentially because it helps especially with a tool like what we have on for where you're able to go frame by frame and you're able to see kind of the build up to ah how either a save was made or to how you got scored on and the different types of um drawing tools we'll call it to that helps kind of say like hey here's where the puck is and then here's you have like the circle or where the puck is and then like the arrow in terms of how like where your head is at or your body shifting or where your gloves are at or anything of the sort of hey here's how much net is opening and where you think you're square on the puck but you're actually off by one or two centimeters because the the the camera essentially is meant to act
00:24:52
Speaker
as the puck or meant to be like the eyes of the puck in that aspect. So um there's a lot there's a lot of different great tools out there when it does come to video, but I think the video platform that we have with OnForm, it's it's a great one. We get a lot of use out of it and there's a lot of it and there's a lot of um a lot of goalies and goalie parents that i think the same thing.
00:25:15
Speaker
Yeah, we get a lot of good feedback about the video. Like goalies love it. Goalie parents love it. Um, but even if you don't use a tool that has the drawing or has, you know, like, cause we can do voiceovers with on form too, which is awesome. But even if you don't have all of that, like just being able to see, cause a lot of times there's a disconnect between what we think.
00:25:42
Speaker
Is going on what we think we did and what ah we actually did like i've I find just from my experience playing like You're like, oh, yeah, I did everything right or oh, why'd that go in and then you look back at the video and you're like, oh I had that a lot a lot different in my mind's eye and one of the biggest um Examples of that for me. It was my second year of college. It was an exhibition game but uh One thing, i I like a lot of the stuff that Shortsey did with me in junior, but I did find that there was a little too much emphasis on the RBH.
00:26:21
Speaker
And so my second year of college, this was after junior. So I'd been a few years since I worked with short C, but we had another goalie coach, Jamie McKeig with, uh, ATC and in the Edmonton area here, he, um, he broke down one of the goals against that I had. And it was a one-on-one going down the wall. And the guy basically shot far side and beat me over the shoulder. And I'm just like, Oh, wow. Nice shot. Whatever. Right.
00:26:51
Speaker
But then we went back and looked at the video and the guys at like the top of the circle and I had already dropped into the RVH. Cause that was kind of what I had been taught. Like I hadn't had a lot of coaching aside from what shorts he had given me. So I didn't really understand the situations when to use the RVH and when not to. And, uh, so you look at the video and it's like, what am I doing? Like.
00:27:19
Speaker
Why am I down in the RVH when the guys at the top of the circle, like obviously he's going to shoot far side high. Cause there was so much net there. And that was just like, that was easy enough to pick up just from, you know, some handheld camcorder on a tripod that somebody was panning back and forth, like in the stands, right? You know, that's what you kind of do at junior and college is one of the scratches do that.
00:27:47
Speaker
but Um, but something like that simple is just like, Oh, like that's not how I thought that went at all. And it's just palatable. Yeah. And like, even if like, when you watch like content creators, like Kazimir Kaskasuo has like the 360 cam that's behind in that. And even somebody like Nick, the goalie or who are one of those GoPro goalie videos that, that you see like.
00:28:14
Speaker
as entertaining as they are to watch like it's it's interesting to see the perspective from at least in that aspect from from behind you know getting them and watching them watch their movements and watching this the the technique and the breakdown behind that um you know obviously not everybody's gonna have access to that I mean like everybody's gonna have access to a camera all of our cell phones nowadays have have cameras so there's so there's no reason for the goalie parent or a scratch whoever to to take out their cell phone and record five minutes of video or whatever. I used to do that sometimes when I was when i was coaching juniors where if I knew that I wasn't going to have goalie's time that day and there are some that I wanted to pick up on, I would take my cell phone out and I'd
00:29:03
Speaker
hang out in the corner along the half wall, make sure that I'm not going to get rolled over by one of the other guys so and just record and just record video of the goalie for the last ah for the last little bit. I actually just put a post up as a record in this. I put a post up on my Instagram where I was doing a play-by-play call for one of the local ju um Major Junior, not Major Junior, just won the local AAA teams. U18 AAA teams. And I just took about like a minute of, I made a video with ah with the warmup of one of the goalies. And just, it was entertaining for me because I like watching goalie warmups and and kind of what everybody does, but just kind of watching this, the breakdown.
00:29:44
Speaker
of it and just taking out videos and just kind of showcasing to the rest of the world, essentially, hey, here's in a warm up sense, you know, here's what's one of the top teams in Alberta is is doing when it when it comes to their warm up. Right. So there's video just video just in general is just a great aspect and is definitely a tool that that you should have. Again, like I know I plug this a lot and Nathan's probably tired of me here, tired of me talking about about what the pro reads for Mingle.
00:30:13
Speaker
fantastic source when it comes to that right obviously they get the professional cameras they get all the broadcasts and whatnot and they probably have better tools than we do but it's the same principle right where they're they're going through their video kind of breaking down okay here's what happened when we when the Edmonton Oilers played the Calgary Flames here's what happened when the Edmonton Oilers were in game seven of the Stanley Cup finals versus Florida or whatever. right And here's what we're watching out for for for next season as whether you're whether you're you the team or whether you're the goalies. right So in a day and age now where technology is probably at its peak and where technology is prevalent everywhere, every cell phone, if you're watching on the on the video side of things, I just have my my cell phone up here, they all have cameras.
00:31:00
Speaker
Right. We get, we get video submissions from parents time to time and they got asked us to break them down or, or whatever. I mean, even then like you, you watch them as well on like the, on like the goalie Facebook parents group or whatever. Right. Everybody has access to a camera. It's dependent on how you utilize it. I mean, Nathan, you and I were talking about talking about like a podcast or so ago where we're talking about Instagram, sexy goals or saves or whatever versus not. Right. Like, um,
00:31:30
Speaker
But yeah, this video is just a great tool to have. And even if your team doesn't do broadcasts or if you don't bring out the iPad or something, you're still able to have a goalie parent or somebody just take, grab a cell phone, go sideways and do like five minutes of, just record five minutes of a practice, record five minutes of a game and then break it down.
00:31:55
Speaker
Yeah, going back to your, uh, initial segment about goalie parent volunteers or whatever. Um, if you are on the ice as a goalie parent and you're telling your goalie something and they're like, yeah, right dad, or yeah, right mom. Cause they'd hear enough of you at home or whatever, or they're just like.
00:32:17
Speaker
Yeah. Yeah. Okay. But they're not changing or whatever. They're not making the adjustments. Whip out your phone and take a 10 second video and see and show them and be like, see, look, you're on your goal line or see, look, you're off your angle or whatever. Like try and find a spot that.
00:32:35
Speaker
Emphasizes your point that you're trying to make take a quick video of it Then you can show them like in between drills or even after the practice depending on when you get some time But yeah, just that visual Like especially younger goalies it's hard for them because they don't have the experience yet to draw off of to be like okay, I made this mistake I know what I need to do to correct it and They don't know that they know their habits. And a lot of times with the younger goalies, the habits are what's easy and what's comfortable, which usually isn't the right thing to do, but it's the easy thing to do, right? The hands come back or they drop the knees, go straight instead of staying low or bent or whatever.
00:33:23
Speaker
um And so being able to have that visual to be like, look, see, cause a lot of times they'll be like, I did have my hands out. And then you take the video and you show them and you're like, does this look like your hands are out? Yeah. And they're like, Oh, that happens a lot in our sessions, right? Oh, too much, too much.
00:33:47
Speaker
but it it's a good feedback tool. The one caveat I will say though is make sure you're not over analyzing because that's a trap you can get into as well, right? So it's great to dissect things and to see where you need to make adjustments, but it's also really easy to get into a negative mental state of mind, a bit of a downward spiral to be like, Oh, I didn't do this. And I didn't do this. And I didn't do that. oh I suck. Right. no See? Yeah. And yeah. And like, that's like the biggest thing. And even like, even as goalie coaches, you know, it's it's kind of like you want to nitpick every little thing. Right. and And you can't. We've yeah, we've we've all we're all guilty of it, Nathan. Trust us. Yeah. But um the the biggest thing is that I
00:34:38
Speaker
when i When I'm doing the facility sessions, for for example, and like if I score a goal on a goalie, i don't really I don't go and correct it right away. I try to replicate whatever it is that caused the goal to go in. right Because i'm trying to I'm trying to build a theory in my head. right And the video is just another one of those tools that helps back up my theory in that aspect. It's like, oh, hey, why am I getting beat on the blocker side or whatever? OK.
00:35:05
Speaker
Do a couple drills or whatever. Let's do a couple reps on the blocker side and see how many times it goes in and then so I'm able also then I'm building my theory and then when I go to the video, it's okay. Well, here's here's what we're seeing and it's proving whatever theory that I have correct or something along those lines, right? So um again, it's massive difference between you know, the the mental eye versus the the eye of the camera or the eye of the puck and in terms of how we think that we're making our save versus how we are how we're actually making our save. And one thing I find to that's happened occasionally is ah sometimes there's things you don't really pick up.
00:35:48
Speaker
live with the naked eye. And that's one thing sometimes, like I have done it before where I'm looking at the goalie I'm working with and I'm like, something's off, but I can't pick it up. And then, so I say, Hey, come here for a second. And we go to the iPad, we look at the video and it's almost like we're both breaking it down and trying to see what what's going on. Cause sometimes there are things where you're like,
00:36:14
Speaker
man, like, I know there's something off, but I can't pick up what it is, then you slow it down, you break it down with the video, and then you're like, Oh, okay, like, look, your hand is here. yeah And see, and and and that's, and and that's kind of almost exactly what I'm saying, right? Because like, like, I do it differently, where it's like, there's something that I'm seeing that I'm not picking up on. So I'm going to continue with it. And I want to see if whatever theory that I have, that that's popping into my head is correct. So then I'll stop the drill after like the third rep or whatever and then I'll go to the iPad and say okay well here let's have a watch here because there's something going on in my head like there's there are bells ringing or red flags going off in my head saying hey something doesn't look right here and then we build on it as we go right so again that's that's just one example of how video can be utilized effectively right so
00:37:13
Speaker
It's, uh, it's one of those things where, um, you know, don't, it it can't be used as video can't be used also as a tool of, I dunno, um, like, uh, I was going to say, I was going to say like, um, like a blackmail tool. Cause that's not the tool that that's not the word that I'm looking for. But like, I wouldn't, I don't think I'd hang it over. I don't, like, I wouldn't like hang it over a goalie's head either. Right. So.
00:37:43
Speaker
Yeah. Like don't hang on. You don't want to drive it out like a little bit. Yeah. Yeah. Like, like that's, I guess almost the overanalyzing thing where you can, yeah, you can like, you, you don't want to be all encompassing about the video. Like, yes, it, it's a useful tool, but you kind of look at it, you learn from it, you move on as opposed to hanging onto it.
00:38:07
Speaker
And the other thing with video too is if you can use it not just for yourself, but like it's a tool that you can use, you know, to scout like other teams, like what they like to do on the power play, what they do on their odd man rushes, um, stuff like that.
00:38:23
Speaker
Uh, you can also use it to watch other goalies and break down what they're doing, right. Or maybe some mistakes that they made all of that, uh, all of that stuff. So it it is a really powerful tool. And I'm sure there's a lot of you out there that, you know, have watched YouTube videos on things to do as, as goalies and and stuff like that. I know we've made a few videos, um, but just, uh,
00:38:53
Speaker
Do what you can to try and implement it. If it is a suction cup holder for a phone on the back of, you know, the glass, or if it is somebody videoing you for you, or if your team already does video, if you can ask for, you know, the saves and goals or whatever the case is, use it to your advantage. But again, don't, don't hang on to it and, uh,
00:39:20
Speaker
yeahll You'll be in a good spot. We'll link up um the tool that we use on forum. It's an an awesome tool We'll also link up if you guys are all and any of you are interested um We do offer like the video breakdown service so you can upload the the video to on form for us to look at and to, we can do voiceover commentary. We can draw on it. We can slow-mo playback and then we can send you the the breakdown um through the app. So it's, it's an awesome tool. Connor's mad at me cause it looks like he wanted to say that and I took his thunder. So I literally just pulled up the DIY goalie.com services page and we do have the breakdown option there.
00:40:07
Speaker
So that's yeah, so that's that's that's the sign up form there for that yeah, so that's at the DIY goalie comm slash video dash breakdown and That'll get you there But we will link that up in the show notes as well with the other stuff that we talked about earlier, too It's gonna be a busy show notes page this week. Yeah, really We're ah we're we're we're we're making it we're getting there. We're making this worth its while. That's that's definitely that's definitely for sure there and But yeah, I know I know I threw a curveball in that today But as I was thinking about I was like, yeah that I think I think that'd be a better segment for today specifically with what we're talking about and when it comes to sorry yes or When it comes to body safe, yeah, yeah, sorry golly

00:40:59
Speaker
Nathan, as always, great episode, pal. It's always a fun time. Kind of got off to a little bit of a rocky start, um but you know. You guys won't fear hear that, so that's okay. No, you will not, but that's that's all right. That's what the blue per reel is for, and that's the blue per reel that will never get released. We'll have fun around here. It would not be a DIY goalie podcast, nor a true north goaltending thing if it didn't go off the rails at least three times. so Yeah. and thanks Thanks to all of you for actually sticking with us. Yeah, really. ah and Coming back each week. Yeah, it's ah yeah no definitely definitely for sure.
00:41:40
Speaker
um Yeah. um there will like ah know it's I've said it last time, and I'll say it again here. like It's weird to think that there are like real life people that are out there actually listening.
00:41:53
Speaker
and kind of taking what we say putting without the us yeah putting up with us essentially and it means a lot specifically and like i I'm gonna i'm I'm gonna I'm gonna get sappy here so bear with me it means a lot for you know for somebody like me who didn't play at a high level um kind of was a little late to the party in that regard. But for but for you guys out there to be listening and you know taking what not only Nathan says, but also what I say as well, like it it means a lot for me in the long run. And it's cool just to know that I am making a difference in the goalie community in that in that regard there as well. So i do ah it it is it is appreciated. So thank you everybody for listening.
00:42:34
Speaker
And, uh, that being said guys too, just, um, as much as, you know, we do have a lot of experience with the position and stuff like that, we are always learning and yeah there's there's probably stuff that we've already said on the podcast early on that we've kind of tweaked now our viewpoint on it or, or, uh, that that's kind of the big message with this to you guys too, is to constantly be learning, like the position.
00:43:02
Speaker
maybe isn't evolving nearly as much as it has in the past or as quickly as it has in the past, but there's always stuff to you know learn about and kind of little tweaks that we can make and and all of that. Because realistically, unless we're Batting a thousand on our save percentage every game. There's always these room for improvement So and that goes with us as coaches and hosts and you guys as goalies us as goalies if we ever get back into the swing of things i'm i'm so I'm still there sometimes. Yeah, not a lot I just recently played in the the large ball that we have here and ah in in town So that was that was pretty cool experience so
00:43:42
Speaker
Yeah, but, but yeah. All right. Well, take us home. We will. ah Yeah, I'll take us home and you know, I'm still trying to work on this outro. It never works, but. We'll see what we can do today.
