Introduction and Host Update

00:00:06
Speaker
Welcome to the DIY Goalie podcast where hosts and goalie coaches Nathan Park and Connor Monday share their insights on how to become ah better goalie.
00:00:18
Speaker
Goalies, welcome back to another episode of the DIY Goalie podcast presented by True North Goaltending. um I am running solo today. Connor and I were supposed to do an episode but I had some dad and dad duties come up and we weren't able to record. And just because of scheduling, um we weren't really able to meet up before giving ourselves enough time to edit. So I am going to run solo today.

Holiday Greetings

00:00:49
Speaker
um First off, to all our Canadian listeners, happy Canada Day. um is coming out right on Canada Day. So hopefully you guys are enjoying the day off and doing a good job of...
00:01:02
Speaker
you know, partying hard enough. and We'll leave it at that. that um And then also an upcoming Happy yeah Independence Day for all the American listeners as well as that will be coming up three days for you guys.
00:01:17
Speaker
um We are in a new month with it being the first day of July.

New Drill Introduction for Shorter Goalies

00:01:23
Speaker
So we are going to kick today's episode off with a new drill of the month.
00:01:29
Speaker
Um, and then we are also going to kind of build off of last week's episode where we had Troy on talking about being a tall goalie, um, with him being six foot seven. So I am going to come at this from the other side and kind of talk about some of the things that we can do as a shorter goalie.

Rebranding to True North Goaltending

00:01:52
Speaker
Um, So, first off, just before we get get going today, um we are very close to having the um new website done and over with. um We have started making some of the social media shifts over to True North Goaltending and kind of away from the DIY goalie. So for those of you who follow the TikTok and the YouTube accounts, those are now branded under True North Goaltending.
00:02:24
Speaker
So make sure if you guys are looking for for us that you search True North Goaltending moving forward as opposed to the DIY Goalie.
00:02:34
Speaker
um And we will be sending out an email in the near future just talking about... um If you are with the email list, getting the monthly newsletters as well as practice plans, um that ah we will be sending out an email just to let you know what to do to get um on the True North one.
00:03:00
Speaker
Basically, it's going to be nothing. We're just going to kind of transfer over the email list, but we'll just make sure that you guys are aware of that. um And this will probably like the end of June will probably be the last one under the DIY goalie.
00:03:17
Speaker
um So just just keep that in mind. If you guys aren't part of the email list and you guys would like to be. um just head to truenorthgoaltending.com slash email and we we will get you guys onto that so you guys can get not only the monthly newsletter and email list, but you can look out for some promotions we're going to be running when we make that switch over. So there'll be some updates.
00:03:47
Speaker
discount codes and stuff like that on the um apparel and the merch that'll be moving from the DIY goalie over to the true North goal tending site, as well as and some of the the courses and stuff that we have there.
00:04:02
Speaker
um So that's just kind of some of the housekeeping

Triangle Stick Save Recoveries Drill

00:04:05
Speaker
stuff. Um, Diving into it, um the drill of the month that I picked out for today is kind of one that's a bit of a, you know,
00:04:19
Speaker
favorite go-to of mine for uh you know a good near the end of of a goalie session to uh finish off with some um some fun stuff um basically get the feet moving um get some good recoveries and get some good in tight work in so that is the triangle stick save recoveries Um, so basically the coach has three pucks set up in a bit of a triangle. So one's kind of, you know, in the slot.
00:04:53
Speaker
Um, the other two pucks are a little bit lower, closer to the net. Um, Just because of spacing and being able to see what happens on the actual, um the drill itself, like online, the pucks seem like they're a little bit higher.
00:05:12
Speaker
um So when you set them up, you would actually want the pucks to be a little bit lower than how they're outlined in the graphic on the, on the drill. um But basically, the coach is going to start with a puck in the slot and then there's two lower pucks kind of closer to the net. So maybe a little bit higher than the backdoor options on either side.
00:05:35
Speaker
And what we're gonna do is we are going to um take a low shot to start to one side or the other. and um whatever side that that shot is taken, the coach is then gonna go to the second puck, the lower one that's on the same side as the one they shot. So if they shot the puck low to the goalie's glove side,
00:06:01
Speaker
They would then move to the puck on the goalie's glove side. The goalie makes their stick save initially. They recover to the second puck for a second shot, which is going to be far side low.

Body Positioning and Play Style for Shorter Goalies

00:06:14
Speaker
And then the coach is going to move over to that third and final puck. And then the goalie, after they make their far side low save, that second shot, they're then going to recover over to the third puck for the final shot.
00:06:28
Speaker
um Again, if the coach ah initially shot to the blocker side instead of the glove side, then they would first go to that blocker side puck and then over to the glove side puck. So basically, and it's working the goalie on making low stick saves, carrying that through to recoveries onto the next shot, um like they gave out a rebound or anything like that. So We really want to make sure that the goalies are executing proper stick saves um and that they are getting good rotations from their stick saves i leading into their next save. So that basically means tracking the puck into contact and tracking it out and that head trajectory helping to rotate their body over
00:07:21
Speaker
They swing the hips around to get square to that next puck, make a good solid push on their knees because this is more of an in tight drill. Now, if you guys wanted, you could actually bring the pucks further up and further out to the sides, like a little bit wider. And you could get the goalie to recover on their on their feet as well.
00:07:46
Speaker
um And then there's... There's a bunch of variations you can do. So you can change up if you only want to do two shots. You want to do that initial first shot and just recover to a second puck for some of the newer goalies that are just working on recoveries. That's something you can do as well.
00:08:04
Speaker
and You can play around with the movements that the goalie has to do. But basically, it's just working on carrying that low stick save through into a good recovery um and kind of getting used to you know, making that that good transitional movement where it's not choppy, like step by step.
00:08:28
Speaker
it's working on getting that nice good flow kind of make your save which carries you through to your recovery carries you through into your next save and we kind of get that nice good flow going um where the goalie is really working on um you know and just making those recoveries kind of look smooth and quick um So and then, yeah, just going through the key points here, we kind of touched on them, but proper stick save leading into recovery. So that means the hands are out in front and it's more so the body that's kind of leaning into the save. We're not using the arm as much. We want to work more through the core.
00:09:10
Speaker
We're tracking down and we're meeting that puck. in front of our body we're not bringing our stick back to our pads and we're only meeting that puck we're not kind of going through that puck like a lot of goalies like to stab at that puck when they make those low stick saves we just kind of want to meet it and then you can kind of use your wrist to help guide where that puck's gonna go um getting set with a good hard stop before the shot comes. So that's kind of talking about recovering on our feet or if you're on your knees when you push over and you're, if you are over pushing, you get a good quick stop and snap that to lead leg back down.
00:09:52
Speaker
And then we get quick, efficient movements and proper rotations as well as finding the puck early. and So you can uh you can kind of work this drill however you want whatever you want to work on again recoveries on the feet or recoveries on the knees but either way it's a good pattern to kind of really work on those low stick saves and get good recoveries with that so um we'll link that up in the show notes that'll be uh that'll be there for our drill of the month today so that's the triangle stick save recoveries and uh that's a fun one to really get the blood pumping, get the goalies moving and really work on a couple key parts of, um, of goaltending in, you know, rebound control as well as good recoveries.

Techniques for Smaller Goalies

00:10:42
Speaker
Um, so kind of moving forward into the, uh, into the meat of the episode. and So i I like the, I don't know, the definition of small or short goalies, how it's really not small or short.
00:11:04
Speaker
um Basically, anything kind of six feet or under, maybe six foot one or under could be considered small or short in the goalie world, just because at the higher levels, we tend to see kind of more of the six foot three being the average kind of goalie height.
00:11:23
Speaker
And it's a lot more common to be on the taller side than the shorter side. So a guy like myself, we kind of touched on it last week. I sit at about five foot ten.
00:11:35
Speaker
um And in the goalie world, as a adult male goalie, that is considered small. So realistically, UC Saros is probably the only NHL goalie that is around that height.
00:11:51
Speaker
um Dustin Wolf is considered a smaller goalie, but I'm pretty sure he's more around six feet. um Whereas Saros, I think, is... you know, listed at five eleven but from what I hear, he's probably more closer to kind of 5'9", maybe five foot ten So fortunately for us, who are kind on the quote-unquote smaller side, um the view on goalie height is shifting, which I think is good.
00:12:24
Speaker
um The era that I grew up in, a lot of small goalies really didn't have a chance. um Kind of when I started playing you know junior and getting up higher, that was starting to shift a little bit.
00:12:39
Speaker
But nowadays, it's definitely shifted a bit more to... what can you bring to the table skill-wise as opposed to what genetic hand were you dealt when it came to ah height.
00:12:51
Speaker
So there's a couple things though because smaller goalies do need to do a little bit more to stand out um to be able to get more looks.
00:13:02
Speaker
And so there's a lot of um a lot of things that we have to make sure that we're getting right. Um, we talked last week about kind of the holes that, uh, tall goalies can leave and, you know, how much or how important it is for them to really make sure that they're moving less and that less can be more, um, the same principles apply as a small or short goalie.
00:13:35
Speaker
The only thing is, is you just have to make sure that you are very dialed in and a couple of skill sets. um The big one being because a lot of people say, you know, stand up more. That's the answer. You got to stand up more. And that is not the case. Like even the goalies that are young, that are, you know, 10 years old can still make top corner saves in their butterfly.
00:14:02
Speaker
right It's just a matter of how you play. So if you are on the smaller side, you really have to dial in playing big. And what I mean by playing big is basically cutting off the angle of the puck.
00:14:16
Speaker
And I'm not necessarily talking about depth, so we don't have to get you know two steps outside of the top of our crease. That is not what I mean, because that is a recipe for getting burned.
00:14:29
Speaker
And a lot of people kind of have that mentality that the small goalies need to be more aggressive and need to come out more. And that's not necessarily the case. Sometimes, yes, but...
00:14:42
Speaker
then you're probably only looking at, unless you're talking about a breakaway or a rush chance, I would say, even if you're on the smaller side, I would not go further out than heels at the top of the crease. So you're still kind of touching the crease in some capacity,
00:14:59
Speaker
but even when I played in zone, I was probably only toes at the top of the crease as a five foot 10 goalie. And I still had a decent amount of success at a pretty high level.
00:15:12
Speaker
Um, so that's, that's kind of the common misconceptions is standing up more and coming out more, um, being the way to kind of counteract your size. And yes, to an extent that's true, but, um,
00:15:29
Speaker
we we can set ourselves up to still play within the confines of modern goaltending and be successful. So when we talk about playing big, I'm talking about how we set our body up to make saves. So that's hands out in front.
00:15:48
Speaker
that shoulders forward and out in front and by out in front, I mean kind of just like slightly in front of our knees um when we're in the butterfly. um Just basically not pulling our shoulders back when we're when we're making saves when we're in the butterfly.
00:16:06
Speaker
um So coming out in front to meet the puck is one of those things that is going to be the big difference maker when it comes to covering more net. And as somebody who did this and it kind of drastically changed my game, using your body to your advantage is probably single biggest thing you can do in your save execution to make yourself cover more net and be bigger as a small goalie so leaning your body into your saves but also leaning slightly forward as we lean towards those saves so i like to call it when i work with my goalies i like to call it our forward diagonals
00:16:49
Speaker
So if you think about it, basically, if you're getting a shot to like your blocker side, your blocker side shoulder as your hand is coming out to that puck to meet it, your blocker side shoulder also leaning forward and a little to the side towards where that puck comes.
00:17:07
Speaker
Obviously, that's for saves that are a little more outside of our body. If they're kind of inside our body, like, you know, coverage area, just to shift into that save, taking it in the shoulder, taking it in the like pec area or anything like that is um perfectly fine too. We've talked lots about how the body can help us control rebounds.
00:17:32
Speaker
um as well as make saves. So that's kind of the advantage of it. But the body shift or the body lean into our save and making sure that we're doing it slightly forward. So again, on that forward diagonal,
00:17:47
Speaker
that can be a big help in cutting off the net in making those proper saves and helping you be bigger and, um, and not really having to move much. Like that's the other thing is goalies tend to think we have to move more than we actually do.
00:18:09
Speaker
But if you get a good lean and your hands are out in front, um, Even as a smaller goalie, you do not have to move very much. And that's where that whole box control stuff comes from.
00:18:22
Speaker
If you can understand where your net is from the puck's perspective and how your net looks from the puck's perspective, That's a game changer.

Skills Focus: Skating and Anticipation

00:18:33
Speaker
So if you guys don't really know, um next time you're on the ice, if you can, set up a puck in the slot and face the net behind the puck and lay on your stomach and see what the puck sees.
00:18:50
Speaker
Bonus points if you have a goalie partner or a goalie coach or even a friend on your team or something like that that can... Even if they don't have goalie equipment on, if they can just sit in the net, kind of maybe go on their knees and you can kind of see just from that how much net they cover.
00:19:09
Speaker
um Just that like their toes at the top of the crease, starting to understand just how little you actually have to move to accomplish what we're trying to accomplish, which is stopping the puck.
00:19:23
Speaker
um that can go a long way in kind of helping you understand how you need to play and how you can play big without doing too much right like last week troy talked about tall goalies needing to do less um and less is more kind of thing it's it's the same principle with with the smaller goalies too right like we have the advantage that we can play a little bit tighter, like a little bit more compact and potentially be less leaky, like under the arms or kind of, you know, above the pad or or that kind of stuff that we can supposedly close up a little bit quicker.
00:20:04
Speaker
um But working out from our body, we can still do that just fine. So even if you're in the butterfly shots coming up kind of near your ear area, If you can kind of lean forward and towards that puck a little bit, or if you can get your hands out in front to make that save, you can still make those saves that are by your ear and you can very easily cover that top corner too just by a little body lean and bringing that hand out in front.
00:20:33
Speaker
So when you're making saves, please, please, please get used to making them in front of your body and get used to using your body to make those saves. Right. A good lean, a good shift.
00:20:46
Speaker
um And again, just coming a little bit forward to that puck, that's all going to make a big difference for you guys. um The other thing too, so we will kind use Saros and Wolf as the two examples because they're basically like the poster boys for smaller goalies.
00:21:08
Speaker
And... If you look at both of them and if you watch both of them play, they are both phenomenal skaters. Like their edge control is fantastic and their explosiveness, like especially Wolf, the way that that guy can get across the net is ridiculous. So if you guys are kind of worried about um and but maybe falling behind because of your size a little bit,
00:21:39
Speaker
Take whatever time you can to work on your skating and off the ice to dedicate your workouts or your off ice training, however you want to call it.
00:21:53
Speaker
Dedicate that to working on your explosiveness as well as kind of your agility, right? Like your ability to be able to go one way and transition the other way on a dime, right? If somebody, you know.
00:22:11
Speaker
yells a ah command or if ah an iPad, if you have an iPad set up and it changes like an an arrow direction or a color or something like that, anything that you guys can kind of, again, use the cognitive processing and have to change directions really quickly and anything like that, that stuff's going to help translate on the ice to be better skaters.
00:22:36
Speaker
And um that's really going to help kind of your game because The one thing that I think is the biggest advantage the taller goalies have is

Managing Depth and Anticipating Puck Movement

00:22:45
Speaker
being able to get across the net quicker just because they have more body to do so, like longer limbs most of the time.
00:22:55
Speaker
um So those those longer legs, those longer arms, they can kind of get into those lanes a little bit quicker on those lateral plays. um So as a smaller goalie, that's kind of, I guess, the one downfall that we have is we just don't have as much we don't have as much real estate coming across that net, right?
00:23:20
Speaker
So that's one thing that if you guys are kind of struggling with um with getting into your spots or getting to your spots early, if the lateral plays you're kind of struggling with,
00:23:34
Speaker
make sure you guys are working on your skating, being explosive and edge work. If you can control your edges, if you can go from one direction to the other or one type of movement to the other really quickly and on a dime, that's what's going to make a big, big difference in the way that perform.
00:23:56
Speaker
in the way that you guys um perform I'm just building off of that to the other thing that's going to be the big game changer and is going to help. And this is for goalies of all size, but especially the shorter goalies is the situational awareness and the anticipation of the play.
00:24:18
Speaker
So the more you can understand the game of hockey, the more that you can understand or try and anticipate how a play is going to play out in front of you, that's going to allow you to have a much better better chance of performing well and will help kind of overcome, you know, the the little bit of shortcomings, I guess, that the the smaller goalies have. So again,
00:24:49
Speaker
The taller goalies can get into the lane a little bit more because they've got those longer limbs. So as a shorter goalie or as a smaller goalie, we need to be able to read the play very, very well so that we can make that rotation and that we can go.
00:25:11
Speaker
So we've talked lots about, like throughout the podcast, about um how we can be better with our situational awareness. um Basically, it just comes from seeing plays more, like being able to kind of...
00:25:27
Speaker
um you know, recognize patterns. So if you are in situations in practice where you're playing small area games or in tight kind of situations, um playing out rebounds, stuff like that, if you can add like screens or tip options, if you can add more traffic in front of you, um more options for people to pass to. So there's a backdoor threat, there's a cross ice threat, there's a high to low threat, whatever the case is.
00:25:57
Speaker
The more of these situations you can put yourself in that's really going to help your anticipation. We've talked about watching hockey too. If you can kind of watch games, if you can see what's happening, break down, you know, the, the plays, the systems, how the goalies you're watching are playing them, um, watching your own videos big and all that stuff. So we've covered lots of these, um, kind of things you can do to get better games.
00:26:25
Speaker
anticipating and at situational awareness. But if you can kind of have an idea of where pucks are going, um or at least, you know, understand that there's a potential that a puck is going to go there and that that's a threat.
00:26:42
Speaker
Having that in the back of your mind to be like, okay, this is an option. i need to be ready for this if that pass comes across so that I can go right away. i can be explosive. I can get a good rotation. i can get my feet set early.
00:26:57
Speaker
Now that pass is now just a straight shot. It's no longer a lateral play because I got there early. um that's really going to help you be successful. So if you guys do have a chance to kind of watch Soros, to watch Wolf or kind of any of the, you know, smaller professional goalies, they all are...
00:27:19
Speaker
very good at anticipating that play and they set themselves up for success on those plays. So depth management is something we've talked about lots on the podcast, but it is very important for smaller goalies.
00:27:35
Speaker
the um The notion of you got to be more aggressive because you're smaller it more often than not just ends up getting goalies in trouble because they end up taking two steps outside of their crease now all of a sudden a pass comes across there's no way they're getting to their spot in time and then they either get beat on ah basically wide open net or they're just late on all their subsequent movements and eventually it catches up to them they lose their net and all of a sudden it kind of looks a little bad
00:28:12
Speaker
So again, if we play big, if we execute our saves properly, we don't need to fly out 10 feet out off our goal line, right?
00:28:24
Speaker
We can sit at the top of the crease, toes at the top of the crease for most situations. Obviously, if it comes a little bit more in tight around our net, we can kind of scale back a little bit on our depth.
00:28:36
Speaker
um And if it's a rush chance or a breakaway, then and yes, we can get a little bit more depth. We, you know, gain a little bit of speed back with the rush or with the player on a breakaway and go from there. But um don't kind of fall for the narrative of.
00:28:55
Speaker
you know, you got to challenge way more, you got to take up more net, all of that stuff that comes from our setup, that comes from our execution. And that comes from how big we can play right with the shoulders, with the hands, using our body, all of that good stuff.
00:29:14
Speaker
um So if you have a coach, like your head coach or whatever, that's like, oh, you got to come out more, you got to come out more you know, you're smaller, you got to cut off the angle.
00:29:26
Speaker
You can tell them that, you know, some goalie specific people thats ah that say that that's not necessarily the case. And you can always tell them to give us an email and we'd be happy to break it down for them.
00:29:42
Speaker
um But the other thing is too, is Play to your strengths. We kind of talked about that a few weeks ago. um But don't try to be something that you guys aren't. Like, if you are a smaller goalie, you know, trying to puff the chest out and run a blocking style of play is not the way that's going to work for you, right?
00:30:10
Speaker
If maybe even if you are a smaller goalie and maybe you aren't the greatest skater out there, first off, I would suggest keep working on your skating as much as you can.
00:30:21
Speaker
But you still might be able to be successful if you understand that and you do play a little bit deeper in your net and you just really work on your save execution and being able to lean your body and meet pucks out in front of your body to really cut off the angle.
00:30:40
Speaker
um on those saves. And then maybe if you get really good at doing that, and you're not the strongest skater, that's fine, you can still play a little bit deeper, and still be successful. Because again, the net is only four feet tall.
00:30:57
Speaker
And from the puck's perspective, because it's looking up, even a goalie that's 10 years old has a lot of their body above the crossbar in their stance from the puck's perspective.
00:31:14
Speaker
And then in the butterfly, Most goalies kind of, you know, once they get into their teens and adulthood, I guess, they'll most most of them will have part of their body above the crossbar in the butterfly as well. If you're at the top of the crease.
00:31:38
Speaker
so a lot of times we don't have to necessarily move as much as we think we do and so being a little bit back with our depth if that's playing to your strengths isn't necessarily a bad thing you just have to recognize that you're doing that because you aren't very good laterally And that just means you really have to make up for it for the way you play straight shots and, you know, basically have to play a little bit bigger in the net by bringing those shoulders forward and having those hands in front, leaning the body, all of that stuff.
00:32:20
Speaker
So if that's really what you're good at and you're not necessarily good at the lateral stuff, then play a little bit deeper. Even if you're a smaller goalie, you're going to give yourself a better chance doing that than trying to force yourself to play further out and get beat a lot on the lateral plays. Because pucks go pucks get moved a ton in a game right like the whole classic um the puck moves faster than you do players are taught to zip that puck around and nowadays especially on like power plays and stuff these these players are getting incredibly good at understanding that the best way to get a chance on net is to have the puck move first especially across the midline so from one
00:33:06
Speaker
um side of the ice to the other. That's kind of the hardest thing for goalies to stop. And people are seeing that by kind of diving into into the analytics and all that stuff. So just be aware that that's what um players are trying to expose.
00:33:25
Speaker
And we kind of need to do what we can to um to

Encouragement for Shorter Goalies

00:33:30
Speaker
mitigate that. So if you're not the strongest skater, take a little bit um ice back.
00:33:36
Speaker
bring your depth back a little bit. If you are a good skater, you can play a little further out, but you do have to have that really good situational awareness and kind of be able to identify threats, um, whether it's the back door or whether it's higher, um, looking for that backside D man who might activate kind of towards that soft, um, ice in the back door area. Um,
00:34:00
Speaker
So that's basically kind of the stuff that we want to be looking for on the smaller side. um What I do like is that people are starting to recognize smaller goalies a little bit more as being competent goaltenders.

Um, but do understand that whether you agree with it or not, whether it's fair or not, there is still a bias towards the bigger goalie.
00:34:30
Speaker
So basically if you have the same skill level as a five foot 10 goalie and you're against the goalie of six foot three, six foot four with the same skill level, unfortunately the six foot three, six foot four goalie is probably going to get, um,
00:34:46
Speaker
get the look first and that's still kind of where we're at. That's the reality of it. So that means that for us who are a little bit smaller, we got to stand out a little bit more. We got to find ways to really wow whoever that we're trying to impress.
00:35:03
Speaker
um And a lot of times that comes from really good skating, but that can also come from just really good save execution, just being in your position um early and often.
00:35:16
Speaker
And just, you know, we talked about yeah people who don't know goaltending as much, um doing evaluations and stuff, just kind of looking like a goalie and stopping the puck.
00:35:30
Speaker
And um that's going to come from working on our skating. That's going to come from being technically sound, getting good rotations, trying to get to our spots early, all of that good stuff. But so If you are on the smaller side, don't panic, don't fret, don't worry about it.
00:35:48
Speaker
Just do what you can to and build your skill set, work on that skating and play to your strengths. And I think you guys will be in a pretty good spot.
00:35:59
Speaker
um I played junior A in college as a 5'10 goalie in an era that was very more biased or much more biased to to taller goalies than we are now, although it's still the bias still definitely exists.

00:36:16
Speaker
But yeah. I think and think we're pushing slowly more and more towards skill being the defining factor and not necessarily size. So um for you smaller goalies out there, keep fighting the good fight and you know work on work on your strengths.
