West Ham's New Era Under Nuno

00:00:13
Global Sports Podcast Network
Welcome back to the Daily English Premier League podcast brought to you by the Global Sports Podcast Network. My name is Nick Bird. I'm here alone today back on the podcast after a little break through illness.
00:00:28
Global Sports Podcast Network
Going to kick things off with Monday Night Football's game. West Ham drew away at Everton one one Nuno Espirito Santo's first game after Graydon Potter was weirdly sacked on Saturday morning.
00:00:39
Global Sports Podcast Network
Possibly the first ever Premier League Saturday morning sacking. ah And Nuno put out a much younger, more athletic lineup. You can tick off the bingo card of Nick talking about West Ham on a an episode.

Potential of Bowen and Nuno's Impact

00:00:55
Global Sports Podcast Network
And although I said I don't think any manager can save this squad, ah I may be coming back on that already. i think Nuno can probably work something out in this team.
00:01:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
And the younger lineup with less of the slow, quite boring players in midfield. I'm thinking of War Prowse. I'm thinking of Guido Rodriguez.
00:01:23
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think... I'll keep Suchek out that because think he at least offers you something that I don't think the others do because James Ward-Prowse hasn't scored a free kick in the Premier League in something like three years.
00:01:36
Global Sports Podcast Network
He's not scored one at West Ham or his loan at Nottingham Forest, I believe it was. So you're not really getting a load from him from free kicks at least.
00:01:48
Global Sports Podcast Network
Some of it was on the left-hand side, he had Juve behind him, and you feel like that could be a fun, direct, difficult to defend left side and help spread the opposition's defence out, which will then give Bowen more chances, who of course is the guy who scored.

Everton's Missed Opportunities

00:02:04
Global Sports Podcast Network
He probably could have got another one as well. This guy is who West Ham's entire hopes are pinned on. And if Nuno can get his system to benefit Bowen in half the way that his system at Forest benefited Chris Wood, then they'll have a decent chance of staying up because Bowen's one of the best right-wingers in the Premier League. I think he's, it feels like he's still severely underrated a bit.
00:02:31
Global Sports Podcast Network
And like he's so, so good. Everton, on the other hand, they dominated the game until West Ham scored and really should have taken advantage of their dominance a bit more.
00:02:45
Global Sports Podcast Network
Michael Keane was the goal scorer for them, who seems to be going through a little bit of a renaissance. Just West Ham decided not to get a man in front of him, and he was the first man for James Garner's cross.
00:02:58
Global Sports Podcast Network
Garner and Grealish had pretty strong games and Jai and Beto not able to finish their chances and Moyes ended up saying how his team just needs far better end product at the moment because this game could have been out of sight for them and instead they're leaving with a 1-0 draw and At home against West Ham.

Tiano Barri: A Solution for Everton's Striker Woes?

00:03:26
Global Sports Podcast Network
One more thing, well probably a bit of personal bias, but at some point you feel like Moyes has to give Tiano Barri a run of games at striker because Beto just doesn't feel like he's offering much up front for Everton at the moment.
00:03:41
Global Sports Podcast Network
And you've brought this young striker who has a decent record in Spain and just give him a run. It feels like one of the distractors from Boise is he can be a little bit too stubborn in terms of keeping players in the team who are a bit more experienced, but...
00:04:04
Global Sports Podcast Network
I'd like to see Turner Barry get a run it up front because the rest of their attack is is flowing. Grealish has been great and Jai is great. Dewsbury Hall's been really strong, I think.
00:04:15
Global Sports Podcast Network
And you've got the depth on the bench as well in the likes of Dibbling and Carlos Alcaraz. So I'm not worried about... They're midfield and attack really, but the striker is something they've got to sort out. And I think Barry can help them massively in that.
00:04:36
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think that's all there is to say on that game.

Spurs' Upcoming Challenges

00:04:40
Global Sports Podcast Network
We'll move on to the Champions League fixtures preview on both Tuesday and Wednesday, if I don't take too long to speak about the Tuesday games.
00:04:48
Global Sports Podcast Network
But first, let's hear a bit about Bionique.
00:05:20
Global Sports Podcast Network
Thank you.
00:05:33
Global Sports Podcast Network
We kick things off with Böder Glimt hosting Spurs, the first of four teams in the Champions League from the Premier League who are away.
00:05:45
Global Sports Podcast Network
so i don't know why said it in such a confusing way. Four of the six Premier League teams in the Champions League are away from home this week.

Spurs' Inconsistency and Managerial Questions

00:05:53
Global Sports Podcast Network
Kicking things off in Norway with Böder Glimt hosting Spurs.
00:05:57
Global Sports Podcast Network
The away trip to Böder Glimt has been one that has tripped up A couple of big teams in the past, but Spurs managed to survive it under Ange on their way to Europa League triumphant triumph last season.
00:06:11
Global Sports Podcast Network
And it feels like maybe not a must win in terms of the usual context of that. but it may be getting there.
00:06:23
Global Sports Podcast Network
um Why I say that is Spurs have had that big win against City, but then since then have struggled to really replicate and keep that success going.
00:06:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
They've only had one win since then, and it was a win away at West Ham, which... and with West Ham under Crean Potter is really something that should be a shock and it's more of an expectation that you go there and win and the only other or win was their win against Villarreal in the first game of the Champions League and that came in quite an on uninspiring game against the Spaniards where Spurs weren't particularly good Villarreal definitely could have nicked something from that game
00:07:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
So Frank maybe needs to work a few things out and I've caught in my notes, anything but a win could bring some question marks to Frank earlier than expected. And,
00:07:24
Global Sports Podcast Network
I say all that, I still think Spurs will probably win. I'll go with a three one to Spurs. Maybe they... I think Bode Glimt will score, but Spurs should have enough get themselves over the line.

Chelsea's Struggles and Mourinho's Return

00:07:42
Global Sports Podcast Network
move on to probably the landmark game for the Premier League side, which is Chelsea against Benfica. And the primary reason this feels so big is Jose Mourinho's return to Stamford Bridge for the 15th time.
00:08:00
Global Sports Podcast Network
And he returns with Enzo Moresca in a slight bit of peril, perhaps. They've failed to win their last two games, both with red cards and with no wins in the Premier League or Champions League since beating Fulham in game week three.
00:08:18
Global Sports Podcast Network
Chelsea are struggling at more than I think many expected them to, especially coming off that Club World Cup win, which is down to you how highly you rate that particular trophy win.
00:08:33
Global Sports Podcast Network
They're going to be without Palmer still. and you kind of wonder, should they have rushed him back in the first place so quick? Maybe he needs a little bit longer, but when you see the sort of numbers that are equated to how important he is for Chelsea, you kind of go back on that and go, I can understand why Enzo's put him back so quickly, but if it's going to cause them cause him to be out for even longer than
00:09:05
Global Sports Podcast Network
maybe Maybe shouldn't have, but Chelsea need to find a way to to get attacking output without him. And Enzo Fernandes seems to be scoring loads, but they...
00:09:21
Global Sports Podcast Network
they need to be getting more from their wingers, the amount of wingers they buy. the They need to be getting more from, maybe a little bit more from Gior Pedro. Maybe that's a little harsh, their attack needs to find something because at the moment it's bit of palmer or we're we're screwed and I've kind of had that with Arsenal where it's if Saka isn't doing anything is is on an off day then Arsenal are screwed and it feels like no palmer no party sort of thing for Chelsea. There'll no Fafana or Tosin Adarabayo for Chelsea's defence so you imagine Josh Achenpong and Chalaba will be the centre-backs but
00:10:06
Global Sports Podcast Network
they're in a weird place at the moment with their defense. I know it's an often talked about point, but the amount of money that they've spent for the lack of quality across their team is mind-blowing.
00:10:21
Global Sports Podcast Network
The centre-back options are horrible. The wingers aren't guys that are absolutely going to do so things for you week in, week out.
00:10:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think the only place you can trust is Cole Palmer and then Caicedo at the moment and maybe Enzo Fernandes a little bit more than felt like when he he first joined. It was really struggling, but...
00:10:53
Global Sports Podcast Network
I can't speak too much on and his overall game, but at least he's getting goals and offering something. But as for the rest of the team, I really struggle to see how they've managed to spend so much money and not improve the squad by so much. And yes, they're buying prospects and young players they can then sell on, but
00:11:20
Global Sports Podcast Network
the primary thing should be improving in your first team and they've really not done that when you look at the team before Clear Lake took over and the team they have now it's
00:11:33
Global Sports Podcast Network
it's really not... It's kind of more sideways than up. So... Yeah. um Jose should touch on him a little bit. He's got four wins in 14 against Chelsea.
00:11:47
Global Sports Podcast Network
He took over after Benfica lost to Carabag in the first week of the Champions League. You imagine that this still shouldn't really be an issue for Chelsea, but...
00:12:01
Global Sports Podcast Network
if Enzo fails to win against Jose with how much Jose means to Chelsea fans and but and as well as that how bad Jose has been as a manager for quite a while now he's failed to really do anything of note for perhaps since winning the conference league with Roma And he went to Turkey with Fenerbahce to try and dislodge Galatasaray and failed to do so.
00:12:33
Global Sports Podcast Network
And now he's failed upwards to Benfica. I'm not sure how Porto fans have taken that. That'll be interesting, but... ah you still I'd still expect Chelsea to win. We'll go with a 2-1.

Liverpool's Away Game Against Galatasaray

00:12:51
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think Chelsea will will struggle a little, but should just about go over the line. Final game for tonight's Champions League. You're probably listening to this after, but Liverpool travel to hell, travel to Galatasaray.
00:13:06
Global Sports Podcast Network
And there's been a bit of drama before this with Chiesa not being in the traveling squad. and after his positive start to the season and an equaliser despite their loss ah against Palace at the weekend.
00:13:24
Global Sports Podcast Network
It's a little weird from Slott. I think I've seen a lot of people on Twitter who are starting to be be a bit concerned with Slott in terms of i think no with how he's doing necessarily but i think it's a bit of like the mask slipping i think we saw him kick off a bit on the sideline at the weekend we've seen him blame players and i think that may be a dutch thing where you can get away with it in the eredivisie but not when you come up abroad especially in england i don't think that sort
00:14:06
Global Sports Podcast Network
throwing players under the bus of sorts. i don't That may be a little bit harsh, but just some of the comments feel a little bit unnecessary at the moment. I still think this game shouldn't be an issue. Galatasaray got battered by Frankfurt in the first game week of the Champions League, 5-1.
00:14:25
Global Sports Podcast Network
But Ottoman may be back for the Turkish side. Then... And if Osserman can come back in, maybe Galatasaray score first and by infamous and that infamous atmosphere at Galatasaray, the sort of welcome to hell thing...

Newcastle vs USG: Strengths and Predictions

00:14:45
Global Sports Podcast Network
gets going then maybe it could get a little bit spooky for for Liverpool but overall i think I'm going 4-0 Liverpool I think they'll rebound and should just out quality Calatasaray really before we move on to the Wednesday Champions League games let's hear little bit about Zengaster
00:15:45
Global Sports Podcast Network
So the Wednesday Champions League games kick off with Union Saint-Gilwell hosting Newcastle. This is a 5.45 kickoff. So don't accidentally miss this thinking it's an 8pm.
00:15:59
Global Sports Podcast Network
you Union Saint-Gilwell or USG have won in the the first game of the Champions League against PSV, which I think came as a bit of a shock. But when you look at the rest of the games they've had this season, they've only lost one game all season. And that was...
00:16:15
Global Sports Podcast Network
Newcastle, on the other hand, haven't really found their flow this season. con seeed just four goals in nine games in the league five goals total if you include the psv game and newcast sa on the other hand haven't really found their flow this season They have a really strong defensive record, ah especially before the loss to Arsenal at the weekend. and But like I say, they don't seem to have found their flow. They haven't really strung... I don't think they've strung any wins together.
00:16:51
Global Sports Podcast Network
Back to back. I'll just pull it up myself. No, they are yet to win back to back games this season. They've had... They started off with a withdraw then lost draw, loss, draw, loss, draw.
00:17:04
Global Sports Podcast Network
A win in the EFL trophy against Bradford and then obviously the loss to Arsenal at the weekend. so I don't think how's under any pressure compared to the other games where I've said with Spurs, for Spurs and the Chelsea game where I think there could be a some questions if they don't win.
00:17:28
Global Sports Podcast Network
don't think how's in that. Cause I think he's bought enough credit and I don't, I think it'd be really harsh on Frank. If that, if there was those questions, I think,
00:17:40
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think Chelsea's the only one where the questions would become a little bit warranted because because of that success that they had last season and the expectations they had coming into this season.
00:17:56
Global Sports Podcast Network
Getting back onto this game though, ah after... the After that Chelsea game, i think this is the game where things could get a little bit weird just because USG's defensive record is so strong.
00:18:12
Global Sports Podcast Network
They're at home. believe... Yeah, it's their first um Champions League home game in their history. That can make things weird.
00:18:24
Global Sports Podcast Network
So Newcastle might need a quick start. Otherwise, USG can grow into this and perhaps avoid a loss or and take something

Arsenal's Expected Victory Over Olympiacos

00:18:36
Global Sports Podcast Network
from this game. But I'll still give the edge to Newcastle. I'll go who one to Newcastle.
00:18:47
Global Sports Podcast Network
On my club Arsenal. I think this will be a quick one because Arsenal host Olympiacos and while there's trauma against the Greek side from the Europa League years, I think the the extra time loss is one that everyone can still picture and remember. I remember having to go into sixth form after that and just get hold abuse for that loss.
00:19:13
Global Sports Podcast Network
And it obviously, ah believe it was that one that kicked off the... The COVID football start because Arteta got COVID from Evangelos Maranakis at that game. ah But I think Arsenal's quality is just another level now.
00:19:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
And this being a home game, it should be a really comfortable win with a chance to rotate. And there's still no Hinkapie who never had an injury before coming to Arsenal and has now been injured basically the whole time, which is great fun, but an excellent almost an expectation. And if you're an Arsenal fan now, players just seem to come in.
00:20:00
Global Sports Podcast Network
with that immaculate injury record and instantly get injured. So it's not too much of a surprise, but it gives a chance for the likes of Myles Lewis-Skelly to get a start left back again.
00:20:13
Global Sports Podcast Network
Mosquera will almost certainly play. ah Ben White at right back. Norgaard perhaps getting a start as he did in the...
00:20:26
Global Sports Podcast Network
Did he start? No, he didn't start in Bilbao. He made his debut off the bench against Bilbao. But yeah, I just think this will be a chance to rotate. I think Saka may still start just to keep that fitness building but and try and get this game won early so then the likes of Dalman can come on and rest the those starters for the game ah on Saturday against West Ham.
00:20:53
Global Sports Podcast Network
I'll go with a o I'm thinking between 4-0 or 5-0. I'll go with 4-0 for Arsenal.

Man City vs Monaco: A Predictable Outcome

00:21:04
Global Sports Podcast Network
Final game, Monaco host Manchester City. Similar to the Arsenal game, I think this will be comfortable for City. Monaco lost their first game of the Champions League to Brugge 4-1 and have conceded in every game this season. So,
00:21:23
Global Sports Podcast Network
This really feels like a game where Haaland could have a lot of fun assuming he starts. and yeah You just don't see don't really see any way for Monaco to win this.
00:21:36
Global Sports Podcast Network
I wonder if Donnarumma will start or whether the Pep will give some chances to Trafford in the lesser Champions League games.
00:21:47
Global Sports Podcast Network
that now That could be an interesting thing to keep an eye on. how much ah don't think... I think Monaco have enough stature where there won't be loads of rotation compared to the Arsenal game who should be able to rotate and still win.
00:22:05
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think... I think City could rotate and still win, but we'll try and get this done quickly and then make the subs. And also, you've got the likes of Marmouche who were injured, so Haaland probably can't be dropped.
00:22:19
Global Sports Podcast Network
And then Aitnora and Kusanov are also injured, so you can't really rest you at your fullbacks either. But I'll go with a 3-0 for City. i think Haaland will get at least two in this game, depending no matter kind of how much City win by.
00:22:44
Global Sports Podcast Network
But that would be all from me today for Tuesdays, the 30th of September's edition of the Daily Premier League podcast brought to you by the Global Sports Podcast Network.
00:22:56
Global Sports Podcast Network
Thank you for joining me and join us again tomorrow for another episode. Goodbye.
