Global Sports Podcast Network
Welcome one and all, welcome wherever you are around this beautiful big blue world of ours um and welcome to the Daily Premier League podcast from Global Sports Podcast Network.
00:00:16
Nick B
Yes. Too far.
00:00:24
Global Sports Podcast Network
It's Tuesday, 26th November. It's cold, it's frosty, it's ah worse that's what it's like in the UK. It's probably not like that in Dubai. My name's Ken Davis. His name is Nick Britton. What a weekend of football that has been.
00:00:37
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah Nick, ah what did you make of all that?
00:00:42
Nick B
Well, still catching my breath after the events of last night, really. It's very rare to see a player sent off for hitting his own teammate.
00:00:45
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah. They
00:00:49
Nick B
But that's exactly what happened to Idris Agui at Everton. It didn't stop Everton recording a 1-0 win away at Manchester United. And Manchester United looked exactly like they did a few weeks ago when everybody was going, is this going to be Amarind's

Nick Britton's Prediction League Win and Ken's Reaction

00:01:02
Nick B
last game? They look very poor.
00:01:03
Nick B
So, like yeah, I mean, you're looking at Liverpool's continued collapse.
00:01:03
Global Sports Podcast Network
looked poor, didn't they?
00:01:08
Nick B
You're looking at... you know Man City couldn't take advantage, a fairly insipid display, I thought, against Newcastle, he played really, really well, though. Yeah, lots to talk about, lots to go through.
00:01:18
Global Sports Podcast Network
lots to talk about. Wins for Chelsea, Brighton, Fulham, Forest will come to that, Palace, Newcastle will come to that, Villa, Arsenal will come to that, and of course, Everton. So it's very interesting. Most importantly, I better point this out, just in the interest of of fair play, in the interest of, what's the word, ah being unbiased.
00:01:41
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah we we We set our standards very high, journalistic standards. ah Nick won the Prediction League 5-3.
00:01:48
Nick B
Thank you very much. Thank you. Just a little note to say that when I only got through a few weeks ago, it took up at least 10 minutes worth of content on the podcast. As you laughed at me, you harangued me, you ran around the room waving your arms.
00:02:02
Nick B
And yet here we are.
00:02:02
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah did I did. In fact, the whole the whole podcast was devoted to it, really, including the title, I think, of the podcast.
00:02:03
Nick B
so you know
00:02:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
Friday.
00:02:10
Nick B
And let's not remember, or let's not forget, dear listeners of ours, dear listeners, if you listened to the episode where Ken made all his predictions, which was on... Friday, Saturday morning. can't remember when it was Friday.
00:02:20
Global Sports Podcast Network
Friday.
00:02:22
Nick B
ah He went for about eight draws. He went for about eight draws.
00:02:26
Global Sports Podcast Network
Well, a draw is an allowable result. and And to be honest, after a couple of games, it was looking pretty good.
00:02:32
Nick B
but It doesn't happen very often. doesn't happen that often, actually. So, yeah.
00:02:36
Global Sports Podcast Network
No, you're right. You're right. I feel such a fool, to be honest. Anyway.
00:02:42
Nick B
So there's something even, there's something. Oh, I'm going to tell you what that something is in a minute. Carry the pod because going to check something.
00:02:49
Global Sports Podcast Network
Okay.

Liverpool's Crisis and Key Matches

00:02:50
Global Sports Podcast Network
Well, there's three three talking points, main talking your points I want to talk about today. First one is the the continuing crisis, collapse, calamity that is Liverpool.
00:02:59
Global Sports Podcast Network
we I remember a few weeks ago, probably about six weeks ago, where I was saying, something's not right in Liverpool, and people laughed at me. People pointed at me in the street and said, there's that bloke who thinks the wheel's going to fall off at Liverpool.
00:03:12
Global Sports Podcast Network
Look at me now. i am um'm umm I'm considered ah to be yeah the predictor of the future. so we're going to talk about Liverpool, about exactly what that was looking like. It's starting to look worse and worse.
00:03:27
Global Sports Podcast Network
Everton, of course, the game last night against Man United. I want to talk about the game, but want to talk clearly about the... I mean, they call it blue on blue, don't they, in the forces? And it's blue on blue last night with Evan. So it'd be interesting to talk about what was going on there between Keane and Idrissi Gay.
00:03:45
Global Sports Podcast Network
Wouldn't mind getting your perspective from a referee's perspective because you are obviously our refereeing correspondent. ah And thirdly, I just wouldn't mind having a quick dance around Arsenal, Man City, Chelsea, just see what our thoughts were on there, on those teams and how that affects the league table.
00:04:02
Nick B
Thank you.
00:04:02
Global Sports Podcast Network
And that is our agenda, everybody. I've got it on PowerPoint. I've got an Excel spreadsheet. Everybody take the seats at the boardroom table because we're about to kick off.
00:04:10
Nick B
go
00:04:11
Global Sports Podcast Network
So, Nick, ah Liverpool, what's going on?
00:04:16
Nick B
Well, they were they were ripped apart. That's the only way you could describe it. Now, I had no no inkling of this was going to come at all because I thought Liverpool were, yeah, they haven't been playing very well, but a Nottingham Forest coached by Sean Dyche, and I mean that with the greatest respect, you would expect to play fairly, yeah i mean, you wouldn't expect to play the the type of football played at Anfield on Saturday. Now, they were They scored some great goals.
00:04:41
Nick B
They hit Liverpool on the attack at just the right time. They soaked up a lot of time without the ball. I wouldn't a huge amount of pressure, but a lot time without ball. And Liverpool defensively were as bad as they've been all season, if not worse. So massive kudos to Sean Dyche. I mean, that's a huge result.
00:05:00
Nick B
And... It was only, you know, no no no team that stops Liverpool scoring at Anfield since Forest did it last season.
00:05:12
Nick B
is it was It was a remarkable result.
00:05:12
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah. And that felt like a bit of a fluke last year, but this this this was a pretty dominant second half particularly.
00:05:20
Nick B
Yeah, last year they were they were absolutely battered. And then Hudson and Doyle sort of nicked one on a break. This year, when you see the goals, when you see the goals from Saturday, when you look at the way they played, I thought they they thoroughly deserved the win. and There's just no doubt about it. They thoroughly deserved it.
00:05:34
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think so. Leaves Liverpool in a very awkward position in the bottom half of the table after a third of the season's gone. Who would have thought that after five games?
00:05:41
Nick B
Well, Slott's got several things he needs to do in a hurry.
00:05:45
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, i want to come to that.
00:05:46
Nick B
You know...
00:05:46
Global Sports Podcast Network
just want to come to that. i just want to just want to set the the context. Liverpool are below Everton. They've lost as many games as Forrest. They've conceded as many goals as Forrest.
00:05:59
Global Sports Podcast Network
I mean, this is a team that is, was running away with it after five games. And the wheels have absolutely, it were they haven't fallen off. The whole whole edifice is disintegrated. So couple of things that I just want to pick up on is...
00:06:17
Global Sports Podcast Network
And Liverpool, Slott particularly, just doesn't seem to be sure of his first 11. They're kind of changed, so much change all the time. They just can't get settled. ah Just to move back to a point about the things to do in a hurry, just just expound on that a little more if you could, Nick.
00:06:36
Nick B
Well, he's got to get Isaac playing for a start. Okay, he's been, Isaac, feel for him a little bit, even though he's been the author of his own downfall here, nobody likes to see a player struggle the way he's struggling at the moment.
00:06:50
Nick B
He's got to find a way of getting him scoring goals. You've got to,
00:06:52
Global Sports Podcast Network
We predicted it at the start of the season, though, didn't we?
00:06:55
Nick B
Yeah, yeah, yeah. But if if he can't, I don't even know why he's playing at the moment because XTK has done well.
00:07:01
Global Sports Podcast Network
and yeah And as Mooney was saying, you'd be furious if you were Etikite.
00:07:02
Nick B
so
00:07:06
Nick B
Yeah, 100%. So he's got to find a way of getting his act confident. That's all it is. It's just confidence. there's no doubting Isaac's talent. It's just confidence. And the same goes to Florian Vert.
00:07:18
Global Sports Podcast Network
Hmm.
00:07:18
Nick B
Confidence. You know, Kerkhez, the whole thing looks a bit too much for him. You know, he was brilliant in Bournemouth last season. Just looks a shell of that player. It just looks too big, too big a step up for him at the moment.
00:07:30
Nick B
I think he needs to drop Mo Salah and, you know, put him on a bench and make a statement for the team.
00:07:33
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah
00:07:37
Nick B
I think, that i think you know, that needs to be a good one.
00:07:38
Global Sports Podcast Network
well sellers sellers going to the aftcon any minute anyway isn't he i mean isn't this the time try to actually say well actually irrespective of that we're gonna we're gonna make a change because gonna make a change anyway
00:07:48
Nick B
Yeah. And I'm sure this is happening behind the scenes on the 25th of November. But he needs, on the 1st of January, he needs Mark Gay or another centre-half to come through the door.
00:08:00
Nick B
and and that And that has to happen on the first day of transfer window.
00:08:00
Global Sports Podcast Network
es
00:08:03
Nick B
It can't wait until three weeks later. it has to happen on the first

Liverpool's Performance Issues and Managerial Decisions

00:08:06
Nick B
the transfer window. Now, the interesting thing is, you know, Gahey was walking over hot coals to get to Liverpool in the summer. I wouldn't be if I was him right now because in August or so July, he's going to have, he's a free agent, he's going to have a host of suitors.
00:08:20
Nick B
Why would he go he go to Liverpool right now when there's no chance, realistically, there's no chance of winning it in the season?
00:08:20
Global Sports Podcast Network
Oh, yeah.
00:08:24
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah?
00:08:27
Global Sports Podcast Network
No, i don't think so.
00:08:27
Nick B
The way they're not going to win it. They might win the League Cup. But that's about it. They're not going to win it.
00:08:31
Global Sports Podcast Network
And that doesn't really count for Liverpool.
00:08:32
Nick B
out No, they're not going to win the Premier League, obviously. There's no way they're going to win the Champions League playing how they are. And they're the two ones, really, that that you want. so So actually, there's another kind of there's another dimension to this in as much as it's very easy to go, oh, I'll tell you what, we'll just go back for Gayley in January. Well, you know, the goalposts have moved.
00:08:54
Global Sports Podcast Network
Completely.
00:08:54
Nick B
I want to go.
00:08:56
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, completely completely. That's a very interesting point, actually. ah I wouldn't be surprised if they're going for Semenya as well, but we shall see.
00:09:05
Global Sports Podcast Network
um Yeah, they massively. That's where they're lacking. And full-backs, course. A couple of points on Sloth.
00:09:05
Nick B
and half They need a dominant centre-half.
00:09:13
Nick B
i mean because just focus ah so You said that the defence is where they're lacking.
00:09:15
Global Sports Podcast Network
I was having look at... Sorry, Nick.
00:09:20
Nick B
I said, yeah, and midfielders and strikers and wide players.
00:09:23
Global Sports Podcast Network
They miss a lot of chances, don't they, Liverpool? They miss a lot of chances, even in the game against Forest. they They had two or three chances before Forest scored. And Forest scored from their first chance.
00:09:33
Nick B
I wonder... yeah Yeah, I wonder if they need to, now that Trent's not playing and provides that sort of extra dimension going forward, they actually need to go back to slightly more rigid formation and just play two holding midfielders and let the front four play.
00:09:45
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:09:46
Nick B
You know, just just have just have, say, Gravenberg sitting there, Solvensky maybe sitting there ah and just holding.
00:09:49
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:09:56
Nick B
Do you know what i mean?
00:09:57
Global Sports Podcast Network
Well, this is part of the problem, isn't it Because they had to change the shape quite considerably because of the players they brought in.
00:10:02
Nick B
Have Grant Birch in there, have McAllister in there, just as two holding midfielders?
00:10:07
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, love it. I think it's that's a very sensible thing to do. Just looking at Arnie Slott. Okay. I said he'd be on under pressure. He is under pressure, but he's not going anywhere. i honestly don't think he is going anywhere, certainly until the end of the season.
00:10:21
Global Sports Podcast Network
um What i would say, though, is looking at his track record, And I worry about managers who have come from Holland. Because, okay, he was at AKL Mart, he was at Feyenoord.
00:10:36
Nick B
Oh, yes, yes.
00:10:37
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah he won He won the Eredivisie in twenty twenty two twenty three He was second in There were nothing in the European competitions.
00:10:38
Nick B
I'm
00:10:47
Global Sports Podcast Network
They never really threatened anything in any of the European competitions. The problem with the ah with the Dutch league, it's so shallow. It's so shallow. You've got three teams, really, and it's no one else.
00:10:59
Global Sports Podcast Network
And it's very hard to look at a coach that's been successful in Holland and say that's going to translate to Premier League. I've got no confidence in slot at all.
00:10:59
Nick B
going to go ahead and see.
00:11:11
Nick B
It's difficult, isn't it? It's really difficult because when you're in a bit of a hole like this, it becomes, and every yeah yeah know it's the pressure of being Liverpool, so every game's under scrutiny. what What can you do?
00:11:23
Nick B
And the and the and the risk of that, you saw a little bit of this at Vito Pereira at Wolves before he got the sack. You then start kind of just making really rash decisions or putting players in odd positions or making odd choices because the pressure.
00:11:33
Global Sports Podcast Network
That's Liverpool, isn't it?
00:11:34
Nick B
Yeah.
00:11:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
That is Liverpool. Yeah, I don't have a lot of confidence in this.
00:11:37
Nick B
Yeah.
00:11:39
Global Sports Podcast Network
Someone who managed to first and second in the Eredivisie with Feyenoord isn't necessarily ah you know the best coach in the world.
00:11:43
Nick B
Yeah, look.
00:11:48
Global Sports Podcast Network
So I've just got a feeling things are going to continue to... He's going to continue to struggle. A lot of people say in the team that won the Premier League last year, which, of course, he won as their coach, wasn't really is his team.
00:11:59
Global Sports Podcast Network
He's got his team and he's he's making a mess of it.
00:12:03
Nick B
yeah look I don't think he's is is he's under he's under pressure. He's not, I don't think, and shouldn't be, in danger of getting the sack at the moment. As you said before, he's probably not going anywhere before the end of the season, and quite rightly.
00:12:15
Global Sports Podcast Network
But I think he will go at the end of the season.
00:12:17
Nick B
Well, got to see.
00:12:18
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think he'll go back to Holland.
00:12:20
Nick B
Look, we know, and we've talked about this a lot, football changes in an instant. And you look like you're having the worst time ever and it's all gone wrong. Suddenly you're winning games and vice versa.
00:12:32
Global Sports Podcast Network
That Derby County.
00:12:32
Nick B
So there's no possible way. Yeah, Dalby had a microcosm within 90 minutes on Saturday. there And did you go to that, by the way?
00:12:44
Global Sports Podcast Network
I did.
00:12:44
Nick B
Yeah, that's why. Can you just stop going? Just stop going, please. And, yeah, I just, he's got a he's just got to find a way.
00:12:56
Nick B
And even if they, it maybe maybe we're in that territory where you've just got to fluke one in off your backside and win 1-0 just to give the team a bit of confidence. Because you could see when they left, look letting the goal against Forrest on Saturday, heads went down.
00:13:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
Oh, yeah.
00:13:09
Nick B
You know, confidence is lacking.
00:13:11
Global Sports Podcast Network
Here we go again.
00:13:11
Nick B
Here we go again, yeah. Here we go again.
00:13:15
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, I honestly think he's not giving himself his best chance because he's not picking his best team. ah You've got to get etiquette up front. You've got to. You've got to play with two holding midfielders. You've got to swap Salah out. You've got to do something about your full-backs.
00:13:31
Global Sports Podcast Network
Even with the resources you've got, which are considerable, ah you've got to be doing better than that. Now, quick one.
00:13:36
Nick B
Well, I've
00:13:37
Global Sports Podcast Network
The next six games, ah very interesting game coming up for Liverpool, by the way, which is not in the Premier League, which is PSV on Wednesday.
00:13:44
Nick B
got to take it at home tomorrow night. And that, you know, that maybe is formed part Slott's thinking on Saturday against Forest. It's not, yeah if you i he wants Ekotike to play tomorrow.
00:13:52
Global Sports Podcast Network
You're right there.
00:13:56
Nick B
And already he'll be he'll be having that little bit of Ange Postacoglu thinking here, already thinking, I ain't going to win the Premier League, so I've got to put all my eggs and in the Champions League basket.
00:14:07
Nick B
Because it's the only thing that's going to get me out this hole, is winning the Champions League. And if that's his thinking, thinking, right, i need Ekotike for tomorrow night, then he is going to play his act. I mean, you're not chucking in you're know checking in a kid or somebody who's never played up front before. you You're chucking in an established international striker that just isn't playing well at the moment.
00:14:24
Global Sports Podcast Network
Interesting.
00:14:25
Nick B
Yeah,
00:14:25
Global Sports Podcast Network
It's massive game, I think, tomorrow. Massive, because PSV, I mean, it's obviously Dutch club.

Zencastr Promotion

00:14:30
Global Sports Podcast Network
They'll be right up for this to put one over slot.
00:14:32
Nick B
but they're not great. They're not good. I mean, they're more than beatable.
00:14:36
Global Sports Podcast Network
Oh, yeah.
00:14:38
Nick B
PSV, yeah, they're not great. Yeah.
00:14:39
Global Sports Podcast Network
No, they're not. Which actually brings me, it's an interesting segue into the next six games, because Liverpool's next six games are West Ham away, Sunderland at home, Leeds away, Brighton at home, Spurs away, Wolves at home.
00:14:52
Global Sports Podcast Network
they are They should really go and win six of them. Arsenal would.
00:14:56
Nick B
They're all winnable games, really, aren't they?
00:14:58
Global Sports Podcast Network
But they're horrible games to lose.
00:15:01
Nick B
yeah
00:15:01
Global Sports Podcast Network
is what if if you're If you're in ah in ah and a downward spiral and you're losing some of these games, that's a bad look.
00:15:01
Nick B
Yeah. Yeah.
00:15:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
Anyway, so we've managed to destroy Liverpool and Arnie Slott all in 15 minutes. Here, by the way, as Arnie Slott doesn't know, it pays to get your team selection right. 00:15:56
Global Sports Podcast Network
Okay, going across you the other side of Stanley Park, I don't know, it's probably not even the case anymore with Hill Dickinson and New Ground. Liverpool is probably completely different direction. ah But Everton, and we weren't even playing at Hill Dickinson, they were playing at Man United.
00:16:10
Global Sports Podcast Network
um
00:16:10
Nick B
You've made a right mess this, haven't you?
00:16:11
Global Sports Podcast Network
artist is
00:16:12
Nick B
You've made a right mess.
00:16:14
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, I should start that bit again, really, shouldn't I? Anyway, we're talking about Everton. Interesting game last night for all kinds of reasons. Three main reasons. How bad were Man United? What's going on? It's always weird when two players of the same team fall out and start throwing hands.
00:16:31
Global Sports Podcast Network
And thirdly, how great were Everton after going down to 10 men? It never looked like losing. The fact they were a far better team before they lost the player. So let's deal with it first. First things

Everton's Analysis Post-Red Card

00:16:43
Global Sports Podcast Network
first. How bad were Man United last night?
00:16:46
Nick B
they were They were a little bit like the Man United earlier in the season where we were criticising them for being slow, for being ponderous, for not creating much. say They allowed Everton to essentially park the bus, as we say here in England.
00:17:01
Nick B
Play in a low block, I think is the common phrase now that you have to use. They allowed that because every time they got the ball, rather than looking for moving it quickly, moving looking for the gaps, moving Everton around, they just played in front of Everton, side to side to side to side.
00:17:16
Nick B
Look, that shouldn't that shouldn't detract from one of the great saves of this already other season that Jordan Pickford made from a Xerxes header. where where he was celebrating at Xerxes.
00:17:25
Global Sports Podcast Network
I started.
00:17:28
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:17:28
Nick B
He was literally, you could see it, his body movement was, I'm off here because I've just scored.
00:17:32
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:17:32
Nick B
And Pickford's flung himself full length to his right to pick the tip the ball around corner. Great save.
00:17:38
Global Sports Podcast Network
Pickford was outstanding last night.
00:17:40
Nick B
outuch One of games Pickford where you just look at him and go he's never going to let a goal in.
00:17:44
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:17:44
Nick B
He's what he hasn't done.
00:17:44
Global Sports Podcast Network
I left him on the bench in my fantasy football.
00:17:48
Nick B
i i I had him in my team. and I got 10 points, which was by far the highest scorer of my team in what was an otherwise miserable week
00:17:54
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah. It was a miserable week for everybody, though. But no, Pickford was outstanding. He showed himself again to be world-class.
00:18:01
Nick B
week.
00:18:01
Global Sports Podcast Network
England's best.
00:18:02
Nick B
I got the challenge.
00:18:02
Global Sports Podcast Network
England's number one by some considerable margin. ah David Moyes had gone 17 games without a win at Old Trafford and managed manage one now. And managed one with 10 men. And he managed one with 10 men because Idris, again, was sent off. Had a bit of a set two with Michael Keane after Man United chance.
00:18:23
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah You know, I've looked at it a few times.
00:18:25
Nick B
Well,
00:18:27
Global Sports Podcast Network
It's pretty modest, isn't it? As ah as an assault. I mean, two questions. Is the standard slightly higher when you're having a go at your own player, your own teammate?
00:18:38
Global Sports Podcast Network
and And secondly, from a refereeing perspective, and secondly, did it really warrant a red?
00:18:44
Nick B
Well, you raise an interesting point. Common sense would decree that the right course of action in that moment in time is to get the two players together, tell them to pack it in, give them a yellow card each and get on with the game.
00:18:59
Nick B
However, the referee, well, he kind of started it, to be honest.
00:19:00
Global Sports Podcast Network
Key didn't really do anything, did he?
00:19:05
Nick B
He kind of started it.
00:19:06
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, but players have a go at each other all the time.
00:19:07
Nick B
Yeah.
00:19:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
You want that, don't you
00:19:09
Nick B
Well, yeah, yeah, yeah. There's nothing wrong with that. I mean, it was an easy it was an easy get out for David Moyes, who came out after the after the after the game and said, oh, yeah, you know, it's great.
00:19:20
Nick B
I welcome it.
00:19:20
Global Sports Podcast Network
Quite like to see that.
00:19:22
Nick B
You know, I don't believe anything. i don't i don't believe... um I didn't believe him in as much as what he said in public would be very different to what he said behind behind closed doors, because...
00:19:31
Global Sports Podcast Network
Oh no, you would have livid.
00:19:32
Nick B
you know you lose that game and then suddenly it's a different story. But he won the game. And um you don't want players fighting, I'm afraid, like that. You want players pushing each other. You want players having a go, but you don't want players physically fighting like that. I don't think it's a good look. and But referee Tony Harrington left him ah in an impossible position because...
00:19:56
Nick B
By the rules, of the law so the laws of the game dictate that any contact above the neck from a player to any other person, whether it's his own teammate, whether it's an opposition player, whether it's coach, whether it's supporter, is a straight red card.
00:20:12
Nick B
um Unless contact is negligible. Now, you could potentially argue it's negligible. I don't think you could, if I'm honest with you. Negligible would be a little stroke around the face or something like that, or or little tap.
00:20:25
Global Sports Podcast Network
Little Tourette.
00:20:25
Nick B
that His hand went out, his hand went out, it didn't him hard, but it hit him. um And if he doesn't send him off in that situation, then opens himself up into a world of pain saying, well, he's not applied the laws of the game. So he gets in trouble and he might lose a game next week. He might get demoted.
00:20:41
Nick B
So you can't, you're damned if you do and you're damned if you don't if you're Tony Harrington, the referee. And I think he took the right course of action because that's what the laws state. Now, people who don't like it shouldn't have a problem with the referee. They should have a problem with the laws of the game.
00:20:54
Nick B
And, you know, maybe they should be amended to say something like, look, you know, whether um whether it's at the discretion the referee to some extent.
00:21:05
Nick B
and It isn't.
00:21:07
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah this Okay, that's a good that's a really good viewpoint on it.
00:21:08
Nick B
it isn't the only The only discretion is negligible or not negligible, and that wasn't negligible. So...
00:21:15
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah yeah We can't really accuse refs on one hand of being inconsistent and then and then expecting them not to apply the laws of the game because you'll literally go mad, wouldn't you?
00:21:23
Nick B
That's the problem, isn't it? Referees should use their user their discretion, they should use common sense. well um There are certain laws of the game where you can do that. You can use common sense and you can use discretion when it comes to a foul or a yellow card.
00:21:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
right.
00:21:36
Nick B
But there are so other laws of the game, like the ball going in and out of play, that you can't use your discretion at. And this is one of them. This is one of the laws where there is no discretion. Hand to face is a red card. It's violent conduct. And that's it. So he did he did the right thing.
00:21:53
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, very good. I didn't quite see what the catalyst for it was in the sense of, you know, was Gay complaining Keane was out of position or or didn't close the ball down fast enough? I don't know. Didn't see enough to to to really go off on one.
00:22:11
Nick B
No, I think one played to the ball to the other and it went out for a corner, I think.
00:22:14
Global Sports Podcast Network
Right.
00:22:14
Nick B
and I'm not really sure. You're right, it wasn't a major thing.
00:22:18
Global Sports Podcast Network
No.
00:22:20
Nick B
And this is where David Moyes does have a point. you know It is good that players aren't just accepting that, put their down and trudge back and defend a corner. it is good that having a go at each other and making them you know setting standards on the pitch. That's fine.
00:22:32
Nick B
It's not good that it comes to blows. But yeah, players should be challenging each other. If one does something or if you if you play me, you know we're up against it at Old Trafford in the opening minutes of a game. You play me a simple ball, but instead of doing that, you boot it out and give away a corner. You're damn right I'm going to have a go at
00:22:47
Global Sports Podcast Network
I wouldn't play you the ball, anyway, to be honest.
00:22:49
Nick B
Well, you just fall over.
00:22:49
Global Sports Podcast Network
um and if I'm always playing up when you're...
00:22:50
Nick B
I'm always paying.
00:22:52
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah um I'm a creative midfielder.
00:22:53
Nick B
if he's
00:22:54
Global Sports Podcast Network
You're you're you're just a dour defender, a central defender. and I'm not even looking backwards, to be quite honest.
00:23:00
Nick B
that
00:23:00
Global Sports Podcast Network
Anyway, ah just what I would say, though, on that subject is ah evidence defence is really rock solid, really.
00:23:01
Nick B
in it
00:23:11
Global Sports Podcast Network
13 goals in 12 games. I mean, put it in perspective, talked about Liverpool earlier, they've conceded 20. ah I still think Everton are lacking a bit up front. It was a great goal, by the way, by Dewsbury Hall last night. But but they are lacking up front, I think, Everton. But they've got this very, very solid defence. And they seem that seems to be working you know brilliantly for them at the moment. And they've got Pickford in goal, which helps.
00:23:33
Nick B
Yeah, Pickford and Goal absolutely helps. But the the back two in the middle of Tarkovsky and Keane are really good. You know, they're really good.
00:23:41
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:23:42
Nick B
We worry how much Everton might miss Jarrod Bransway this season. actually, you know, these two are doing a business. And it's not often you can say that, if honest with you, about Keane particularly, who's been bit up and down over the years.
00:23:53
Nick B
But last night, they did really well. But equally, Manchester United made it very easy for them because they were just lofting balls into the box, which they were going to head away and kick away all day long.
00:24:04
Global Sports Podcast Network
all All day. They look very pedestrian, lacked ideas, United. And, yeah, they yeah considering we're just coming off a yeah an international break, they look like they look like they've all been on beaches.
00:24:16
Global Sports Podcast Network
Thank you.
00:24:16
Nick B
Yeah, they did. I mean, if you look at Everton's front four, because they played the front four, you've got Ndi on the right, you've got Dewsbury Hall in the middle and Grealish on the left.
00:24:29
Nick B
That's really good. That's really good. where they are Where they are let down is their striker. They don't have a good number nine. So that it's either kind of Barry or Beto, Beto or Barry, you know, they're just interchange. Neither of them.
00:24:41
Global Sports Podcast Network
No, they're really that quality, are they?
00:24:43
Nick B
But if you can go out in January...
00:24:47
Nick B
it's hard but even find yourself a ah better number nine then they could have a very good second after the season but even even if you can't do it in January because it is difficult to sign strikers in January then next summer I'm sure ah a good striker is right at the top of David Lloyd's shopping list
00:25:02
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, i think so. And that should be quite a nicely balanced team, I think, if they get a rear a real ah a real striker.

Okie dokie, we've got a quick spin across so three of the games which caught my eye this this weekend.

Arsenal's Dominance over Spurs

00:26:03
Global Sports Podcast Network
Arsenal's victory against Spurs, which when we were doing the predictions, Nick, you spent five minutes saying, oh, Spurs are a good team, very, very good team.
00:26:09
Nick B
you
00:26:11
Global Sports Podcast Network
I fancy him for something, I really do, they might win, they might win, they might the home win and then and so and then and of course it was home win it was always going to be a home win Arsenal were pretty dominant man let's deal with Arsenal first ah Spurs were terrible Arsenal were great they're going to win and they're going to win the league yeah
00:26:19
Nick B
know
00:26:33
Nick B
Yes, I think probably. probably so the Yeah, they can, because the only way Arsenal won't win the league is if they as if they would blow up towards the end of the season.
00:26:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
can anyone challenge them
00:26:44
Nick B
And there they have form for not you know being able to keep their foot on the pedal on the metal in the last couple of months of the season. it's looking It's looking difficult right now to see anybody but Arsenal win, because what they're doing so well is they're getting injuries.
00:27:01
Nick B
and They've got a lot of injuries. and they're just bringing in players who are as good or doing the business and keep on winning games. I mean, they dismantled Tottenham. Tottenham really poor.
00:27:12
Nick B
I mean, they were dreadful. But dismantled Tottenham on Sunday, and that was out. You know, Goykeres, who was injured.
00:27:22
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, it was great though, wasn't it?
00:27:22
Nick B
was a good one.
00:27:23
Global Sports Podcast Network
Some of them finishing.
00:27:25
Nick B
He was amazing. We know he's amazing. We talk about him a lot on this podcast. I'm one of his biggest fans. He's my favourite player in the Premier League. And, yeah, they just look unstoppable because you'd think losing your key centre-half in Gabriel and your key striker in Goy Goresh, that might have had no effect.
00:27:45
Global Sports Podcast Network
i know better they no they're great Rice is such a such a player isn't such an important player for them
00:27:45
Nick B
You'd think, well, it might have no effect whatsoever. They just steamrolled on them from the very first.
00:27:55
Nick B
Yeah, Rice was brilliant. I just thought, I mean, all over the pitch, every every player, you Trossard had a great game. You Trossard's really, really stepped up to the fore because we we we wondered, didn't we, when Eze bought in Madweke in the summer, whether this be the exit Trossard.
00:28:01
Global Sports Podcast Network
gosh he has
00:28:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:28:10
Nick B
But the opposite, is he stepped up to ground.
00:28:10
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:28:12
Nick B
He's now an integral and key part of that team and he's keeping Madweke out on Sunday. But then you can bring Madweke on and you go, oh, blimey, you know, there's no rest there's no respite here.
00:28:20
Global Sports Podcast Network
the best team.
00:28:21
Nick B
They are the best players.
00:28:21
Global Sports Podcast Network
They're the best team. They're the best team for me. Only City can challenge them, can't they? Only City can challenge them.
00:28:27
Nick B
Well, at the moment, Chelsea are second. It'd be interesting because they play each other on on Sunday, i don't they? Chelsea against Arsenal.
00:28:34
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:28:35
Nick B
That's going to be a fascinating game because Arsenal win that, and I think they will win it, then that opens up a big, big, big gap.
00:28:39
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, so do I.
00:28:43
Nick B
And never say never. We've seen it down the years. Teams with big leads get hauled in. That happens. It can happen. It does happen. But right now, Arsenal are looking head and shoulders above the rest of the Premier League.
00:28:55
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think so. Things can change quickly. But normally the team involved is not as good as Arsenal.

Man City vs Newcastle and the Missed Penalty

00:29:01
Global Sports Podcast Network
Spurs, by the way, ah I'm glad you're getting on my ah my little hobby horse here.
00:29:06
Global Sports Podcast Network
of Spurs are in fact rubbish and that that it was completely false position they were in. Spurs are in fact rubbish and it was completely false position they were in. Hmm.
00:29:17
Nick B
Okay. Yeah, mean, they're down to ninth now on level points, Man U, Everton and Liverpool.
00:29:23
Global Sports Podcast Network
Hmm.
00:29:23
Nick B
Everton are above Liverpool for the first time in a decade, by the way.
00:29:25
Global Sports Podcast Network
I know, it's amazing amazing to see.
00:29:26
Nick B
Yeah.
00:29:27
Global Sports Podcast Network
liverpo That story's going to run and run, i'm telling you and it's gonna i What you think of your prediction then for the game against PS Vita tomorrow for Liverpool?
00:29:28
Nick B
Liverpool lost. Liverpool lost.
00:29:38
Nick B
Well, it's hard to predict them a win, isn't it? But I think they will win it. I think the Champions League is going to be slightly better for them Premier League at moment. So, no, I do think they will win it but it's the first time since Bill Shankly was in charge that, and that was what, the 1950s?
00:29:50
Nick B
Yeah, 60s.
00:29:51
Global Sports Podcast Network
No, 1970s, and 70s.
00:29:53
Nick B
60s. That Liverpool lost two games in a row by three goals.
00:29:59
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, yeah.
00:29:59
Nick B
Yeah. Yeah.
00:30:00
Global Sports Podcast Network
That's... ah and it didn't have Well, I'm surprised that happened on the Shankly, to be honest.
00:30:01
Nick B
i
00:30:05
Global Sports Podcast Network
Man City, pretty hesitant. Newcastle looked pretty good. Why was Foden's not a penalty? That was a bigger penalty than I've seen in a long time. We don't like to diss the refs because we're kind of on the ref side, but, I mean, what was going on there? That that went to VAR. What
00:30:23
Nick B
Yeah. I don't know.
00:30:26
Global Sports Podcast Network
were they thinking?
00:30:26
Nick B
I don't know. i I can't explain it.
00:30:27
Global Sports Podcast Network
What?
00:30:29
Nick B
I can't explain it one little bit.
00:30:29
Global Sports Podcast Network
no
00:30:30
Nick B
I don't know. But listen, on the whole, Newcastle absolutely deserve to win the game.
00:30:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:30:35
Nick B
They were really good. They're a funny side this year. They're
00:30:38
Global Sports Podcast Network
Where did that come from? Because they've been really ordinary, haven't they?
00:30:41
Nick B
No, they haven't. Their home form's been really good. Their away form's been dreadful. That's why in the middle, they are ordinary. They can't sort that away form out.
00:30:46
Global Sports Podcast Network
Hmm.
00:30:47
Nick B
If they can sort the away form out, they'll come they'll shoot up the table because their home form is really, really good. And they made Man City look pretty poor. That midfield three that i love of Joe Linton and... and Raleigh and Bruno were were right on it.
00:30:58
Global Sports Podcast Network
Gideon, Aish.
00:31:02
Nick B
Haaland didn't really get a kick after the first two or three minutes.
00:31:04
Global Sports Podcast Network
no
00:31:04
Nick B
And we all know that if Haaland don't get a kick, Man City don't score. And they didn't. Foden, I thought, played well, but missed a couple of very presentable chances.
00:31:11
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, they good chances.
00:31:14
Nick B
But I don't think we should take anything away from a very good Newcastle performance. man And Man City, again, it was just it was a missed opportunity, wasn't it, to close that or to keep the pressure on Arsenal, if you like.
00:31:26
Global Sports Podcast Network
Absolutely. And yeah, very interesting. But you're right, City you were hesitant. And finally, Chelsea, pretty routine win against Burnley away at Burnley. They got the job done.
00:31:36
Global Sports Podcast Network
They were not dominant ah in a way that you expect an Arsenal to be dominant. Pretty unconvincing, really. But, you know, they did they did the job. on a
00:31:45
Nick B
You
00:31:45
Global Sports Podcast Network
and They answered the question, can they do it on ah on a cold, rainy, you know,
00:31:50
Nick B
don't know in your prediction. I said yes, and that's why I won the prediction league. and And lots of other results as well. Yeah, five out of the last six, they've won. And slowly, they're just you know nobody's talking about them.
00:31:58
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah,
00:32:01
Nick B
Everybody's going on about Liverpool and Man City and Arsenal. Nobody's talking about Chelsea. But they're in second place. If they turn Arsenal over on Sunday, game on?
00:32:11
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah maybe you're right.
00:32:12
Global Sports Podcast Network
And they and they and they won without Caicedo. I think he's been the one of the outstanding players of the Premier League this year.
00:32:12
Nick B
Game on.
00:32:19
Nick B
interestingly Interestingly, we've been talking about this, haven't we? We we talked a few weeks ago about um can can they play without Cole Palmer?
00:32:30
Nick B
And at the time, they were struggling, but they've found a way to do it now, haven't they? They've found to do
00:32:34
Global Sports Podcast Network
Get it?
00:32:36
Nick B
And, you know, Estavio, I think is worth a mention. Estavio, sorry. Because he's come to the fore.
00:32:42
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yes, please.
00:32:43
Nick B
is becoming a really good player. And Mareska's got them playing better now, I think. So they've got over that hump of being able to play, not being able to play with without Palmer.
00:32:56
Nick B
And they're looking good. They're looking
00:32:59
Global Sports Podcast Network
I wonder, and um this is the test for me, the next game coming up, I think there may be one of them teams that beats crap teams convincingly, Chelsea, but struggles against better teams.
00:33:08
Nick B
They're looking good.
00:33:11
Global Sports Podcast Network
It'll be interesting to see how they perform against Arsenal. I can see Arsenal taking them to the cleaners, quite honestly, but we shall see.
00:33:17
Nick B
I can see them winning the game. I don't know if they'll take them to cleaners because I think Arsenal will win. yeah
00:33:23
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think so. But we'll leave that for Friday. Anyway, thank you, Nick. That has been, as always, an enormous pleasure. And thank you, everybody, for listening, wherever you may be. If you want to get in contact with us, and please do, because we'll probably have a postbag again soon, it's dailypremierleagepodcast at gmail.com. I've been Ken Davis. I will be for the rest of the week. He's been Nick Britton. He will also be for the rest the week. And we'll see you again the next time.
00:33:50
Global Sports Podcast Network
Bye-bye.
00:33:51
Nick B
Bye-bye.
