Zach Sheets: And this week we're heading into the hive and talking about Resident Evil. The 2002 movie that kicked off that whole franchise. Because we've got another attempt at Resident Evil in theaters right now. Zach Kreiger's version.
Zach Sheets: which we're recording a little early so we don't really know what the ver reviews are like, but hopefully it's good because... you He made our favorite movie last year, Weapons, and also Barbarian, which is also a banger. So I trust him.
Zach Sheets: It seems like it's going to be a different take on Resident Evil. but All the other attempts have pretty much failed, so... Hopefully he's good.
Chris Prime: Come on, third time's a charm.
Zach Sheets: Or like the... How many of you are in this pod? Paul W. Sanderson series, like, seven.
Chris Prime: Sext? Six or seven.
Zach Sheets: Yeah.
Chris Prime: But I think after you savage the lore, it... it kind of The series can take its own direction, which is hard. I mean, it makes sense where... You're outpacing the games.
Chris Prime: or you are just making stuff between game references. like because Unless they... Unless the series... Has the main cast or someone from the.
Chris Prime: Story? if it's all original characters they're gonna go off script like guaranteed It.
Zach Sheets: okay
Chris Prime: I don't know what other... film series that do that where Uh... you know, TV or film where If they can't get the world right.
Chris Prime: and they can't get the characters right, like then it always... varies very fast. And Resident Evil so far has like a two for two. For.
Chris Prime: Live action ad. adaptations for that. Where they just like... They barely get it right in this one.
Zach Sheets: yeah
Chris Prime: And then they totally butcher it in... Raccoon City.
Zach Sheets: welcome to wrecking city that one i mean that one probably could have been good if they didn't try to cram two two entire games worth of storyline to like 90 minutes.
Chris Prime: Like, they got the world right. They got the the setting right this time. They got the like the world with the right characters. And then... They just... redid this movie again.
Chris Prime: And, like... in a weirder way. Because they try to make...
Zach Sheets: It's like we need to...
Chris Prime: Albert Wesker funny.
Zach Sheets: Yeah. yeah And then we got to tell a story of one and two. You can cram every character from both those games in there.
Chris Prime: So. Hi. It makes me. think about view game live adaptations and I think. Before this... Resident Evil movie, the last decent one.
Chris Prime: i don't I don't remember. Like, what was the last decent one prior?
Zach Sheets: well Well, obviously for this movie, like Paul Debus said, Tall W .S. Anderson was coming off Mortal Kombat. So, I mean, he had made like. One of the best video game movies.
Chris Prime: That's true, but he didn't do two.
Zach Sheets: No, he didn't. He didn't shoot. No.
Chris Prime: And then I. I think. I think before Resident Evil, there must have been another video game adaptation, but... Probably nothing of worthy.
Zach Sheets: Well, Tomb Raider was a the year before this. The first Tomb Raider movie.
Chris Prime: Okay. Mmm. Yeah. know, I, I, I miss said that. but spo Yeah. So that was not bad. but I know the Wing Commander came out before this, like three years.
Zach Sheets: yeah Mm -mm.
Chris Prime: And I kind of remember like. That was barely a Wing Commander movie. It was like this flux period. And I think Tomb Raider, like it got better over time just because of how.
Chris Prime: It's stuck to the basics. And it's still like. a cheesy adventure movie that Holds up. I mean graphically probably not. uh in And if they.
Chris Prime: do anything weird with planets in the future it it gets even more bizarre with the triad
Zach Sheets: Well... Well, Resident Evil came out and it was like it was right before... like Like... video game movie just went absolutely downhill because like that's when like Uwe Boll started like Pop it stuff out.
Chris Prime: True. That is true.
Zach Sheets: and then like And then like... the doom movie and like, DOA and postal man.
Chris Prime: Alone in the dark. and
Zach Sheets: Yeah.
Chris Prime: I mean, there were...
Zach Sheets: Max paid.
Chris Prime: There was a glimmer in Silent Hill. The original 2006 one. Because that was at least...
Zach Sheets: Yeah.
Chris Prime: Watchable. And it was atmospheric. Uh... and then yeah During this time, just Resident Evil movies were coming out every two years.
Chris Prime: So it's like. I kind of had low hopes after this movie initially as a kid because I want it. you know, the Chris or Leon or Jill or Claire.
Chris Prime: Uh... And this was what? like Two years, two, three years after Resident Evil 3.
Chris Prime: So, you know, Resident Evil wasn't a dead franchise.
Zach Sheets: I mean, we were talking before we started recording the podcast, but like, this is the same year, 2002 is when the GameCube remake came out of the first. of the first game.
Chris Prime: Made it more accessible to play because I knew a lot of people who didn't play the original Resident Evil just because the graphics aged. weird, and then... Uh...
Chris Prime: The American version got the director's cut. where it was censored and you it was missing content. Uh, So the live action, the the not live action, but. Really?
Chris Prime: Great. remastered and like GameCube exclusive at the time for the longest time was GameCube exclusive.
Chris Prime: Uh... That Resident Evil game really... Made it. Like. really introduced the more atmospheric settings and and horror that made the game more gothic than it Than it was. Cause I think ever. And then.
Chris Prime: I'm only thinking of the next game that had a very like similar... Look. of of it being like... you know, cryptic and and dark and has the, like...
Chris Prime: actual resident part. Is maybe Code Veronica? That's another Resident Evil game that...
Zach Sheets: Mm hmm.
Chris Prime: took it back to basics where... you You went through, like... Residential. familiar facilities to like. laboratories. Uh... grant Granted, almost all the games to always have that, but...
Zach Sheets: Oh, Resident Evil 0 was the same year too? That was also 2002?
Zach Sheets: Great.
Chris Prime: I think that came out before. Four. Or after. After the...
Zach Sheets: So... So they put up both games in the same year? That's that's pretty kind of insane.
Zach Sheets: Talk about trade.
Chris Prime: Man, that makes sense. yeah Yeah, well... It was mostly on a train and then you get to a cave. Uh, yeah. Zero. I remember it was like. development hell for a while. So... You know, like the gamers were hyped. They were informed.
Chris Prime: A lot of interest in Resident Evil. Then the movie comes out or like. pre -coming out in development. I remember downloading. The... the trailer for this just to watch like that office sequence.
Zach Sheets: Mm hmm.
Chris Prime: Uh... And. i don't know it It still holds up. This movie has a really good... sense of how like Umbrella treats its employees.
Chris Prime: And how it's like protocols are really messed up.
Zach Sheets: Yeah, they did they nail that umbrella is like an evil company.
Chris Prime: The. They'll like. Ever since then, they really don't show something like - this of just Like a disaster in the workplace for raccoon. For, like, for like Umbrella Corporation.
Zach Sheets: Mm hmm.
Chris Prime: I kind of wish that like. You know, they did more of that in the other movies, like other flashbacks or other. incidences, but they really just went for more stylish things. And. And like.
Chris Prime: I don't know Yeah, it's like following Alice's like transformation into some sort of... Superhero. And you you really forget that from, I don't know, the third movie.
Chris Prime: on But for this movie. it kind of gets it back to basics because. You really don't know Alice's origin? And I don't know if that was just a mistake. Or they just said, yeah, we don't have time. Like we just.
Chris Prime: here's this woman in a red dress that's it that's all you're gonna get
Zach Sheets: Yep.
Chris Prime: And she's a, you know, there's some misters. Mysterious deal. But yeah, she her job is to be here.
Chris Prime: uh so yeah you want to get let's get into like the plot
Zach Sheets: Yeah. So, its I mean, it's it's loosely. And that's like, like italicize bold like loosely based on The first Resident Evil. And. I guess Resident Evil 2, because there's like elements of like both games, but...
Zach Sheets: it's I mean, there's no there's no characters at all. there's no None of the characters in the games are in this one. you gotta wait till the second one and you finally get like Jill and nemesis. but
Zach Sheets: Yeah, you get the... the the kind of yeah like the cool opening sequence you just mentioned chris where it's like you're in like The. The Hive, which is a relic. umbrella's like underground facility where they're doing all sorts of all their nefarious stuff And then kind get it's all like.
Zach Sheets: Everyone's kind of like going through their morning. And then. Someone is like stealing. vials of what we we we don't we don't really know what it is yet. It's just like a blue blue and green.
Zach Sheets: files of things. And then we get that like cool shot of Corbin throwing the vial at the desk. Like the matrix shot. And then.
Zach Sheets: Everything starts going to hell because... It's like... cameras is like zooming in and seeing stuff and like locking doors and Flooding offices. Sl - dropping elevators.
Zach Sheets: Everyone's starting to freak out.
Chris Prime: Yeah, the... really interesting computer. surveillance. Camber angles is an interesting touch. It makes it feel feel like it's found footage.
Zach Sheets: Hmm?
Chris Prime: I think the movie opens up with a... Uh... credit that's like this is documentation from an incident in Raccoon City
Zach Sheets: Well, it's it's like... It's Jason Isaacs who does has like... A voice cameo and then, like, I guess a cameo at the end. But, He's doing, he's doing like, the intro. Introducing, like, but Umbrella Corporation, I'm like, Umbrella Corporation is the most powerful corporation in the world. They they do... healthcare.
Zach Sheets: home products but secretly do military experiments genetic research
Zach Sheets: And then it's and it cuts like yeah that it costs like the... The Hive. So so it's it's kind of like... A little bit like... like doesn't want a space odyssey where it's like hail is just like watching and like killing everyone
Chris Prime: Yeah, yeah. it That's a good... A good comparison.
Zach Sheets: the You always type it.
Chris Prime: whole calculate computer just just going at its protocol.
Zach Sheets: The only time you're going to hear Resident Evil 2002 compared to 2001 A Space Odyssey.
Chris Prime: Yeah, because after that, it goes... Down.
Zach Sheets: But yeah, there's some fun chaos. I like the... kind like It's like a like almost like a Final Destination thing where like the elevator where like like it gets trapped like between floors and like the woman is trying to crawl out of it.
Zach Sheets: And then it like drops. where Actually, it drops and she's fine. and it goes and Then it goes up. and then you like she gets decapitated. Although we don't really we don't see it.
Chris Prime: It's implied. There's no way that woman was totally fine.
Chris Prime: Uh... The. The, like, virus is interesting. Just because it starts as, like...
Chris Prime: Yes. And then aerosol. To then... bond with I guess. like organic material.
Zach Sheets: Well, yeah
Chris Prime: And then it stops gassing again?
Zach Sheets: Well, go it goes to the vents. And then. i don't I don't think the gas that kills the people is, like, the virus. I think that's, like...
Chris Prime: No, no, that's the fences.
Zach Sheets: it's hail It's like halon gas. Yo, boy. Poison gas that killed them.
Chris Prime: It didn't matter because then they become... Uh... zombies So I don't understand why even poison them if they basically.
Zach Sheets: Yep.
Chris Prime: It's too late anyway.
Zach Sheets: Yeah, because it seems like... like So it's like. We find out later the Red Queen is like... the AI for this base. and she is like the one that like it locked everything down. but yeah when she when is she like She knows what the T -Virus is, so when she knows if I kill them, they're going to come back as zombies.
Chris Prime: If anything, she should have just. Corral them. I guess that maybe...
Zach Sheets: yeah cause This is what... Is this what she's trying to do? I think she's trying to lock them down, like kill everyone, lock it down so the the virus doesn't escape it up to like the surface.
Chris Prime: Okay, like that would make sense. it's I guess it's just not... Explained well? I get like it's got. Like every. accident it's just like okay kill everything that's our that's it all it knows is to kill Which...
Chris Prime: What? the heck umbrella is is it like in the handbook That if, like, i'm like someone... steals like coffee from the office lockdown kill everyone like
Zach Sheets: For it. foreign matters in the lab. Engage protocols.
Chris Prime: Like some of the protocols don't make any sense where. I get you lock the door. Fine, that makes sense. Gas? Sort of. mess around with the elevator, like scare a person.
Zach Sheets: Wait, what? but like She drops one, like i just full drops it down and smashes it. And also like flood flooding the one, like the lab where like the teeth, right. They're like, They're making the T -Virus?
Chris Prime: No, that was just the... The test subjects? Like that was the test room. Because it's next to the room that has all the dogs. so Their lab.
Chris Prime: where they're like has they have computers and speakers.
Zach Sheets: Hmm?
Chris Prime: That gets flooded.
Zach Sheets: Yeah.
Chris Prime: So... weird thing to do for a lab, like just floods with water. Uh... Then. the in Let's go back to the elevator prank.
Chris Prime: Like... The Final Destination type. elevator that That's not in her programming, is it?
Zach Sheets: I'm gonna give them a little scare before they die. like
Chris Prime: Yeah.
Chris Prime: So... Yeah, weird thing to have. uh and then you know like later In the series, we find out that. Like... Dr. Ashford programmed the Red Queen off his daughter, so he's the he's the one that patterned the Red Queen off of, like...
Chris Prime: All right. patterning the Red Queen's behavior off his own kid. that she has these tendencies, I guess.
Zach Sheets: but She's like just like a a mischievous little scamp who's like, i Yeah, I'm going to play with my food before I kill it. like
Chris Prime: Essentially. Uh... So... Yeah, that's just like the opening and she's not even like the main villain. The Red Queen is just part of this hive system.
Chris Prime: Even though...
Zach Sheets: i mean feel i I feel like...
Chris Prime: Yeah they programmed this thing to be evil.
Zach Sheets: i well i feel i mean I feel like she's kind of right, because when the team comes down and disables her... Then it's like, and then like everything's unleashed. Like, like they, like she was keeping the everything contained. Like if, if they go down there and like mess with everything, like it would just been like.
Zach Sheets: Locked out. and Nothing would have got out.
Chris Prime: Good point. I think an email. or some sort of message from the ai to the humans Would have been better.
Zach Sheets: Yeah, we
Chris Prime: I also think that. This is also a test for the virus? that umbrella is recording because. It's running a protocol and main umbrella isn't freaked out. They just want to see what happens. Hey. And. it and it's It's talked about later on and people have speculated that.
Chris Prime: This is just one giant simulation. It's a messed up simulation, but... Like, it's it's a it's a... Preview Run that they i them themselves have designed.
Zach Sheets: okay
Chris Prime: and contained in a way. that they can... Show. people and say Check out how deadly our virus is. Check out how deadly... like a response team to the virus. Like can't.
Chris Prime: candle and then you know At least we have some cure. or or something i
Zach Sheets: Yeah.
Chris Prime: i don't know it's a weird thing to flex for an evil company Where. You destroy your own property and and personnel. to tell them about a virus that they can't contain, right?
Chris Prime: You know, cause that's another thing umbrella always keeps doing is. They always seem like they plan their accidents, but... you realize see how just incompetent they are that they just but they keep like lying
Zach Sheets: Well, at least they made like the virus and the antivirus. They just didn't just make the virus and be like, well, we have no way to stop this.
Chris Prime: Right, but... You know I wouldn't be surprised if they didn't have an antidote. It just like...
Zach Sheets: Well, that's a... It's not just like i like and an evil corporate thing of like, we we unleash the virus, then we sell the antivirus.
Chris Prime: But the antivirus doesn't.
Zach Sheets: It really is.
Chris Prime: But here's the thing. The antivirus doesn't always work.
Zach Sheets: Yeah, I guess...
Chris Prime: they they they bring that up where it's like yeah it might not work and it's like okay what's the
Zach Sheets: Yeah.
Chris Prime: What's the science behind it? They're like, I don't know.
Zach Sheets: if you've If you've been bitten like...
Chris Prime: they're just
Zach Sheets: 20 times the characters in this movie are, it's probably not going to work.
Chris Prime: So... Yeah, that's another thing this movie... establishes. like Is it depending on where you get bit, how fast you turn? Because that's something I saw between this movie and the sequel is that the infection rate is different for everybody.
Zach Sheets: m
Chris Prime: Sometimes it's like you get bit on the hand and you can walk around for two hours and nothing's wrong And other times it could be like. 10 minutes. Like, oh, he bit me on like...
Chris Prime: The, like... The side. of my my chest and then oh i'm a zombie now
Zach Sheets: It seems like it takes a while for most the like most of the characters that get... like bitten.
Chris Prime: Oh yeah, if you're a core character, you last a while while you get bit.
Zach Sheets: Like if it.
Chris Prime: If you're just like... an extra or just someone who joined in the background. You're instantly a zombie in, like, minutes.
Zach Sheets: but But yeah, but but after that opening... we we like We cut to... the mansion mean maybe alice who is Naked in the shower. which is And part of the part of the fence pass game is like... like They dropped Nerf gas into the like the mansion.
Chris Prime: Well, it's like... it's It's magical MacGuffin gas. where
Zach Sheets: it gives you It gives you amnesia.
Chris Prime: yeah it knocks you unconscious so whatever you're doing you're just gonna fall asleep and Whoever designed this gas, it like... does it know what room you're in and gasses you or does it just like unleash gas in every like place
Zach Sheets: why Why would you put a vent for like your... knockout gas in like a marble shower where like they but like the person you're gassing is going to fall and probably like kill themselves.
Chris Prime: Bang their head. Right.
Zach Sheets: yeah
Chris Prime: right Like and that's a slip and fall accident. waiting to happen. And... Why would you gas your own...
Zach Sheets: Security.
Chris Prime: Like. So it's supposedly these are your top security because Alice is like a top operative. whose whose job is to
Zach Sheets: Mm -hmm.
Chris Prime: A, have a cover. And be. fight whatever tries to enter or exit the lab.
Zach Sheets: Yeah.
Chris Prime: Because she has like an arsenal in her bedroom.
Chris Prime: And then she can't access it.
Zach Sheets: Yeah, the whole... the homeade Yeah, the whole mansion is just is just like a front. affront to be like the secret entrance into the lab.
Chris Prime: What? That's another thing about the the mansion front. I get it it's a front. Right. Why is it decorated? Like, why why would they spend the time to...
Chris Prime: Have it be. Very, like... Lavish. I know.
Zach Sheets: Two people.
Chris Prime: Two people. Just two people. Who don't really. know each other or trust each other it seems like they just met a month ago or less Maybe.
Zach Sheets: We're supposed to they're supposed to be posing as like a married couple.
Chris Prime: But like.
Zach Sheets: But yeah.
Chris Prime: It's not like time has passed where they have like different hair or like style. It seemed like they took that wedding photo like. A week ago.
Zach Sheets: yeah And like we were... I think we talked before we we started recording, too.
Zach Sheets: Who's coming out to like visit them? like Are people like having like dinner parties and stuff? It's like, oh, yes, it's us. We live in this mansion. Thanks for visiting us. like
Chris Prime: No. Not only that, it seems like... In... the whole movie, I get a lot happens. No one in the city seems to like...
Chris Prime: know who lives at this mansion. you You know, like. It's not like another character in another movie is like, hey, didn't you used to live in that giant mansion that overlooked the city?
Chris Prime: or Or like another character that's like, oh, hey. I knew you when you were the guardian at the mansion front, like something.
Chris Prime: Like, it's never mentioned again that Alice lived in the mansion.
Zach Sheets: Mm hmm.
Chris Prime: I know maybe later on, not to spoil everything, but if you get to like the last movie, they sort of explain that. you know, There's a whole like reason behind everything. and why everyone's like a clone or that
Zach Sheets: Mm -hmm.
Chris Prime: It's like... They were secretly a person. fixing all these plot holes in order to make sense and it's it's it's such a bad job Like it's such a like. Weird reason.
Chris Prime: But even then, I would have loved. for Like, that is such a, like... Unplanned move. two Like, that's not something Paul W. and Anderson planned. I don't.
Chris Prime: Did he write the screenplay to this?
Zach Sheets: Oh, yeah, he wrote and directed this first one, yeah.
Chris Prime: So he got lucky for having these like giant gaps because he was able to bring it. Sort of together by the last movie. Because I could see... What happens is the last movie shows up.
Chris Prime: and then he just or like another director takes over it's like i don't know what to do why does this happen
Chris Prime: Who's that? My character did what now?
Zach Sheets: Well, I think Paul Devin... Oh, he had 1, 4, 5, and 6. So he just did he didn't do two and three.
Chris Prime: And two is like. the better version of one.
Zach Sheets: yeah Like it's kind of like what people actually wanted, which is like, oh, there's video game characters in this video game movie.
Chris Prime: Yeah, and then there's like really great like settings and costume designs. I just can't keep up. Two was... All of the series. Two is my favorite. But...
Chris Prime: Uh... Yeah, with this movie, though... You think? It would have. Someone from the universe. like Maybe you would get.
Chris Prime: A character that... Dressed like Honk. like who stays like that for the rest of the movie.
Zach Sheets: I mean, it's definitely because it's yeah, it's it's not like a stars team either.
Chris Prime: Or...
Zach Sheets: It's like it's like an umbrella core team that comes in.
Chris Prime: Yep. Oh, before that. Okay, so we're getting used to the idea that Alice is going to be our main hero. Like.
Zach Sheets: Mm -hmm.
Chris Prime: You know, I get it. she They banked on it. Then they want to play her up as if she's... a Like, she doesn't need equipment or anything. She's just...
Chris Prime: capable on her own like she's a fighting machine
Zach Sheets: Well, she she becomes Jason Bourne later, where it's like, she doesn't remember who she is, but then she remember like she has like this inherent fighting combat skills.
Chris Prime: Yeah, that's awakened by stress.
Zach Sheets: Mm hmm.
Chris Prime: So... I mean... Resident Evil really wasn't known for hand -to -hand combat at this point.
Zach Sheets: Well, I mean, at least until like Probably, like, four, when, like, Leah starts, like... Like. wrestling people and dropkicking people.
Chris Prime: Yeah, but four is still a few years away from this, like at least two or three.
Zach Sheets: Yeah.
Chris Prime: Three more years.
Zach Sheets: It was like 2005.
Chris Prime: Okay, so three more years from this. So they didn't think, because at this point, Resident Evil... games like you you may laid at a desperation you really didn't you didn't try to
Zach Sheets: With like a knife. Yeah, you stabbed him with a knife and it ran away.
Chris Prime: Yeah. That's another thing too. No one here has a knife.
Zach Sheets: hu
Chris Prime: I would have didn't mind if it was the classic like survival horror. Where... the character some of the characters. are separated at first and one group is all guns and they're trying to be more Like they're more reckless.
Chris Prime: Like the Predator kind of movies where like they felt they were badass until they actually meet something that... Peace. Better than them?
Zach Sheets: hu
Chris Prime: And then you get the scrappy, you know... normal people who Basically have to fend off the zombies with whatever they find. or any office equipment, or...
Chris Prime: Like. they have to be like smart about their encounters, you know? but Yeah, it just sort of fuses together into... Uh... classic like like survivor group.
Chris Prime: Or on. like they weren't on survivors yet. Like the the survivors really happen. By the time they could. they get to the computer room. Bye. I would have liked it to be more Resident Evil where...
Chris Prime: maybe like she is just like you don't know because you don't know who she is yet and she's figuring that out she's just doing the more scavenger methods.
Zach Sheets: huh
Chris Prime: But like... The movie gives that no time. I think like. 10 minutes maybe less than that of her getting dressed and walking around the mansion Another guy, like the... the the The fake cop shows up.
Zach Sheets: Yup. Matt shows up. He's like, oh, I'm a cop.
Chris Prime: Okay, and then it's like before that's even taken care of, then here comes the commandos.
Zach Sheets: Guys. I just burst through the windows.
Chris Prime: Yeah, this is like It has that pacing issue where it's like, okay, you're introducing... everything at once i would have liked it to be little more paced out so it feels like a thriller, maybe an action thriller.
Chris Prime: But. Yeah, like... It just sort of like TV movie, like everything's happening all at once.
Zach Sheets: or like Or like music video style.
Chris Prime: Oh my god, yeah.
Zach Sheets: it's it's It's all just like set like new metal, like instrumental new metal.
Chris Prime: Yeah, anything that's like... an intense action sequence or like an intense scene that's where the metal gets cranked up and it's like dirtderder dirt dirtder uder
Chris Prime: It's not bad the first time but it gets annoying after a while
Zach Sheets: But it's hilarious how quickly they get out of the mansion. like because that's It's like, oh, yeah the the setting for the first game that everyone loves. Get out of there as soon as possible. like Easily open this door and let's get to like this like underground lab thing.
Chris Prime: I would have loved. if there was some bullshit puzzle, and then they just break through it. You know, like. It's like they look at some classic Resident Evil style. find the jewel, find a crank.
Chris Prime: Bullshit.
Zach Sheets: Yeah, do something. Do something. Let's say have like a weird key or like just a little bit of...
Chris Prime: Oh, no. I want that but I want that acknowledged.
Zach Sheets: like
Chris Prime: And then they just bust out the break the door equipment.
Zach Sheets: Yeah. shoot it or something.

Chris Prime: And. That's another thing too. Like the movie shows this giant hive. But it seems like this movie only takes place in two levels.

Zach Sheets: leads like a a bunch of them into like this corridor and it locks and then it lasers start coming out of it. So they have to dodge these lasers. And it's like cutting people in half.

Zach Sheets: it was yeah I think it was it was something that he said to her previously and then she's like repeating it. It's like a... like a Action Hero one -liner.

Chris Prime: Yeah, she doesn't. She just sort of goes. All right. Like just drops her ring.

Chris Prime: Yeah, her fake marriage didn't mean that much to her. Because, it's again, and later in the series, it's not brought up that she was fake married. Or even to who?
Chris Prime: Like she moves on pretty fast and I get it. It's like she's a super soldier. Spy. I guess.
Zach Sheets: Oh, she says, I'm missing you already. That's like her one -liner to him.

Chris Prime: And does she even keep the axe?
Zach Sheets: I think this does Matt have it on the train. Or. i think yeah i I think it's down the train, but it doesn't really do much to like the liquor. Because they also use like a pipe to like jam its tongue on the on the the floor. and theyre Like... like Then they slam all the rest of the pipes into it.
Chris Prime: Yeah, lucky that there was enough, like... material to Like mess up the liquor. it's the I don't think in the game that's how they defeated it.
Chris Prime: They were shooting at it.
Zach Sheets: Yeah.
Zach Sheets: And they don't do don' do anything with like the way Lickers can't see. be like quiet.
Zach Sheets: There's like, oh, it's a big giant monster.

Chris Prime: Yeah, I remember I saw this movie in theaters as a kid. And I remember someone groaning. It's like, oh man, when's this movie over?
Zach Sheets: Yeah, it's like... a Fake ending.
Zach Sheets: And then, yeah, then, like, Jason Isaacs, I think, is, like, he gets his, like, voice cameo where it's like, put him in the Nemesis program.
Chris Prime: Too bad Jason and Isaac didn't. follow through.
Zach Sheets: It became like, what? Was he, I think he was supposed to, was he supposed to be Wesker or was he going to be like a... Like, I think...
Chris Prime: Maybe something in Ashford.

Zach Sheets: And then Alice wakes up again in like a hospital. Which I don't like. a they I guess they're like... Tsk. seeing if she was exposed to anything maybe or like doing experiments on her but she But she like escapes. There's like no one in the hospital. So she'll just to walk out and then it's like.
Zach Sheets: Oh no, Wreck of City is in ruins. Hey, look, there's like actual mentions of stars on like cop cars and and newspaper. Remember that from the game?
Chris Prime: Yeah, the... The follow -up movie actually does a good job of tying it. like rebooting the concept and then scaling it so it's not just A movie about. you know five rooms
Zach Sheets: Mm.
Chris Prime: Five rooms and a bunch of hallways.
Zach Sheets: Yes, like those those rooms those like rooms that you saw at the beginning of the movie. Those are the rooms. plus but Plus this giant like concrete sewer room.
Chris Prime: Yeah, this movie does establish like all of the settings of this like layout, but... bird. Hive could have just been a warehouse.
Chris Prime: Like it doesn't use the fact that it's a hive shape. to go underground, come back up. Maybe. Explode a portion of the hive. Or... you know,
Chris Prime: there's a monster lurking and they have to like keep out running it through this building.
Zach Sheets: It's only like it's it's like the lab is like the only... route like I guess the lab and like the... like Red Queens. Like... chamber thing is like the only kind of like high -tech looking areas yeah the rest of it's like oh we They found some sort of like abandoned warehouse or abandoned like sewer that they're shooting in.
Zach Sheets: Well, they built like this set that looks like a giant sewer.
Chris Prime: Yeah, they they built an office room where it's just an office.
Zach Sheets: Mm -hmm.
Chris Prime: And that's where they have the heart to heart to explain like the sister who I think is killed off already. Like she. Alice just bashes her with like. A piece of... Like, rock?
Zach Sheets: Like a paperweight or something.
Zach Sheets: Because Matt's like, well, she had to contact an umbrella. But, like, I guess yeah maybe they betrayed her or something. And I was like, oh, that's that's weird. Definitely not me.
Zach Sheets: And of course of course the movie ends with... A Slipknot song. Because it's 2002.
Chris Prime: Yeah. It's like peak Slipknot error.
Chris Prime: Yeah, I think I saw this movie twice. I saw it in theaters with two different groups of people.
Zach Sheets: hu
Chris Prime: And. The reaction from... It was like. the people who don't know risen evil they didn't mind it because like okay that's a horror movie i'm like it's barely horror
Zach Sheets: Yeah.
Chris Prime: To me, to me. Then it's like for video game fans, they were just like, what the hell? This is what I thought it would be.
Zach Sheets: It's also like it feels like weirdly like. It feels like PG -13 even though it's rated R. like Like, it's a zombie movie. You can probably, like... they definitely could have like went went way more crazy with like the the gore and stuff like there's a scene That feels like it's going to be like the... like like the day of the dead scene where someone's gonna get ripped apart.
Zach Sheets: by zombies and it's like nothing there's like no guts get pulled out or anything just like vanish under like a crowd of zombies
Chris Prime: Yep. even Even the laser sequence. When Shay, was it? One.
Zach Sheets: Shade. Yeah.
Chris Prime: Shade, like... He it should have been more like visually like like so like shot from a distance or something, but it's like blurred and zoomed in. Like the camera moves away.
Chris Prime: It's a PG -13 way of representing the horror. but I mean, it probably scared some kids, but... When's the next time you're walking into a laser grid?
Zach Sheets: But it, I mean it.
Zach Sheets: But, I mean, the movie is rated R. It's weird that they don't, like... It feels like they'll, like...
Chris Prime: Is it the only rated R movie? Is it like just the first two and then the rest like aren't?
Zach Sheets: I mean, that would make sense just because it's like they're trying to like get a wide audience.
Chris Prime: Right, right. but It's barely uses that violence.
Zach Sheets: Yeah.
Chris Prime: No one curses? They just say shit a lot.
Zach Sheets: Yeah, and there's there's like not a lot of blood when they like kill zombies. They just kind of just like get shot in the head and like fall over with no blood. and
Chris Prime: Yeah, comparison now to... Walking Dead where it's way more bloody. than this movie.
Zach Sheets: Yeah.
Chris Prime: That just tells you the times.
Zach Sheets: Also, and like, Paul W. Sanders was in, like, director like e Event Horizon before this.
Chris Prime: So he knows gore. He knows how to amplify the body horror.
Zach Sheets: Yeah. Mm -hmm.
Chris Prime: I mean, if anything, there should have been a sequence Where a human turns into a zombie and it's way more brutal looking.
Zach Sheets: the The early 2000s CG probably doesn't help either.
Chris Prime: That's true.
Zach Sheets: like yeah so so going back to like some of the cgs movie it is rough like the liquor is like Not great. it's
Zach Sheets: i I do appreciate there's like like a ton of like zombie extras. like They have like a ton of people. like walk around like zombies.
Chris Prime: i do like that i do like that uh They use some practical effects still, so it's close to... What? Uh... you know, they promised in the original Romero.
Chris Prime: They were like, okay, re if we're going to make a Resident Evil thing. Maybe we'll have like. Some. romero style zombies and everyone's slow and And you see the more character acting.
Chris Prime: Uh... Then it just becomes a CGI blob by the end. yeah It's like they're barely even fighting more zombies by the time the liquor shows up.
Zach Sheets: Mm -hmm.
Zach Sheets: Yeah, and then this one and this one has like like like it has like some little hints of like the Matrix -y -ness of... that would come later where it's like Especially like, was it like Afterlife? and retribution or just like It's the circle like full insane. like Matrix fights.
Chris Prime: Yeah, everything is a... A sci -fi fight. Everyone knows Kung Fu. And. feels like They rehearsed the fights.
Zach Sheets: yeah think like like that like The final fight from like Afterlife with Wesker is just like... I remember there was like a regular media video where just they just watched that and were laughing at it. Because it's it's so ridiculous.
Chris Prime: I believe it. That part doesn't hold up, probably.
Zach Sheets: Or like... Or what was it? like It was like the one where like... it was like There's like two or three Alice's like falling from a building and she's like shooting and it's like full on like just like Matrix bullet time.
Chris Prime: Is that the one where they're diving down a so skyscraper?
Zach Sheets: I think so yeah.
Chris Prime: Enough in the foyer.
Zach Sheets: Mm hmm.
Zach Sheets: I just remember the one they set up was like... Oh, we're going to have an army of Alice's. And like literally the first minute of the next movie is like, oh, they're all dead. They all got killed.
Chris Prime: Yeah, but that's another review for another time to go. How? balls crazy that the series turns into.
Zach Sheets: Mm hmm.
Chris Prime: I do appreciate that we're not making... We're not pointing out the flaws. of the story structure. It's pretty simple and linear. And. It's not like.
Chris Prime: you know We need to worry about more MacGuffin powers. It's more just bad technology. weird AI rules. And... Just pacing issues with... like characters because there would have been another version of this movie where it is more of a traditional survivor horror And you have the the different people meeting and running into each other and doing things and getting picked off.
Zach Sheets: hu
Chris Prime: but they don't do any of that like everyone just sort of gets like sequence where it's like okay this is where like you lose all these characters this is where You know, there's a.
Chris Prime: like a new problem that that requires them to backtrack. Cause there's a lot of them like going back and forth, back and forth in the same rooms.
Zach Sheets: Yep. It's like, oh, I remember the viruses in this lab. Go back to the lab that we passed when we first walked in here.
Chris Prime: I mean, if they really want to honor Resident Evil, it is just like you do. loop around a certain amount of time, and then you get to a next section. Like...
Zach Sheets: Yeah.
Chris Prime: Resident Evil, you can't go back to the beginning of the map. You know, it's not like. The game starts the first level and it ends on that first level. It it is like. You always progress.
Chris Prime: forward into a thing and then get to the next zone. Like you might backtrack to grab one or two things, then go back and then unlock the door and then keep going. So... The hive would have been fine where they they keep like making their way downward.
Chris Prime: And in the end, they have to escape like a time limit.
Chris Prime: That's cool, but here it just seems like they keep going back and forth between everything.
Zach Sheets: Yeah, like the Red Queen should have been at the very bottom of the hive, and they fight their way down through all the levels, and they finally get the Red Queen at the end. when we We got to the tip of the hive.
Zach Sheets: And now we're finally at Threaded Queen's Chamber.
Chris Prime: Maybe she has the antidote. in her chamber
Zach Sheets: Mm -hmm.
Chris Prime: That she's protecting with her laser grid? And then it's like. these special agents are good at or commandos are good at finding zombies but not so much a laser defense grid And that would have been... different but Yeah. I get like... It it subverts that.
Chris Prime: All these commandos are just wiped out in the beginning, so now you're left with just the survivors. But then it's just the same four rooms that keep like wandering between.
Zach Sheets: Yeah. Yep.
Chris Prime: Uh... Now, would you have liked this series if it... the sequel was more of the same.
Zach Sheets: Well, I do, i mean like you said, like the second one. It's kind of like more of like what... I think we all wanted, which was like. Actually. kind of being more like the like having video game characters in the video game movie and kind of like having plot points from the game.
Zach Sheets: But then they kind of gave up on that for three years. Like, let's just make Mad Max.
Chris Prime: Yeah. And. To me, that's where. you know all All bets are off. on story structure and where the series will go it's just it's whatever they want now
Zach Sheets: Ba -dump! But then they kept throwing care like give you to get a game in there, but like... They're not like a it's not like.
Chris Prime: Oh no, they're they are shoehorned in.
Zach Sheets: It... recognizable from yeah it's like not recognizable from like the games at all It's like, here's here's Chris and Claire. I guess. Are they anything like the game the characters? Not really.
Zach Sheets: I mean, how how long did it take that look for like Leon to show up? It was like...
Chris Prime: Four movies in?
Zach Sheets: The fifth one or something.
Chris Prime: And then he's not in the six. He's just like, I'm gone.
Zach Sheets: But yeah, the first the first one, you know, it's it's not... Terrible. so it's just especially on the bell curve like video game movies it's probably like one of the better video game movies but Is it like a Resident Evil movie? It's...
Zach Sheets: barely resident it's like barely like anything related to the games
Chris Prime: It's got like... Recognizable. logos.
Zach Sheets: It's got zombies and a liquor.
Chris Prime: And. Yeah. But in terms of... You know. establishing more of the lore or exploring a different part of the the, like...
Chris Prime: the stories and characters that the game doesn't touch upon. Like the CGI movies do way more. they the the The CGI movies are hard to watch if you're not familiar with Resident Evil whatsoever.
Zach Sheets: Yeah.
Chris Prime: But... At least. They continue the thick the spirit and the like. ridiculous plot. Points. But.
Chris Prime: Not to really kind of insult this more, the this all WS Anderson version more. Uh... It tried to capture what made Resident Evil. Like.
Chris Prime: Tense. you know It's like zombies in a small enclosed space and you can't just shoot your way out easily. Fine. That's like your basic Resident Evil. plot. Especially in a classic Resident Evil. because... By the time you get Resident Evil 4 and 5 and 6, like...
Chris Prime: You can just. you know save your ammo just melee everything
Chris Prime: Yeah, I just. I think like... How? the one character who's just like a really cool like you know, trained operative that later gets psychic powers and then you know clones and then
Zach Sheets: Mm hmm.
Chris Prime: Uh... sometimes becomes a mom to like three different. girl characters. like It's weird.
Zach Sheets: Yeah, hopeful hopefully this new Zack Greger one is like the first like. Resident Evil movie that's actually like a good movie.
Chris Prime: Or even... Even if it's not, I know He's been saying that it's not going to be. Uh... like a true adaptation it just takes place in the same setting
Zach Sheets: it's happening It's like Evil 2 is happening and then this character is kind of just like... Like. off to the side, like trying to like survive on his own little adventure.
Chris Prime: I'm fine with that. I just have a question about why is it winter? In that setting.
Zach Sheets: Yeah.
Chris Prime: like I think that's what's throwing me off more. We'll see. you know if it Does so poorly. We'll review it a year from now. His anniversary of like.
