Speaker: Hello and welcome to another Every Nation Commentary for October 2026. I'm your host Zach. I'm your co-host Chris. And this month's spooky season we're diving into a horror movie and we are going to watch the 1980 guess cult classic ah Fade to Black um which features ah like a ton of classic movie references and movie monsters all played one crazy killer.

Speaker: And this movie, I think, is like lost to time because it doesn't have ah that eighty slasher killer vibe. It's more homage to like Vincent Price era movies where you need to know some sort of like reference, either literary or like media reference to get the the scope.

Speaker: And 80s movie viewers weren't all about that yet. It seems like it's it's referencing a lot of, like, forty s movies. Like, Kiss of Death and White Heat are two of the big movies that we're gonna see get references to this movie. Right, right. But, like, that's not like, I bring my girlfriend to this movie, and then she instantly gets, like, the reference. Yeah. This is that era of 80s horror movies. I'm sure, like, not everyone was like that, not every couple, but this is the decade where that was defined, where a guy was like, I'll bring my girlfriend to a horror movie, so she jumps into my arm. Like...

Speaker: the Fade to Black wasn't that. Yeah. this is This is about a killer cinephile for cinephiles. Yeah. like It's nice that it's rediscovered by guys like us and shared, but that's what the movie was meant for.

Speaker: But I also think the production houses were like, oh man, this is with butts in seats. This like movie cinephile super fan horror feature.

Speaker: And this is also the same year that like The Shining came out and like Friday the 13th came out. Yeah, like it just it had to come out to be a thing, but what a time to get donked on.

Speaker: Yeah, the movie that like made the the like the slasher boom happen came out the same year as this.

Speaker: But ah yeah, it's it's on it's on YouTube. So ah probably if you're hearing this, if you go to the post on everythingnation.com, it's probably embedded right above the commentary track. Or just search for Fade to Black on YouTube and you'll find at least two copies. found at least two for us.

Speaker: But yeah, we're um we're in our pause at zero. So if you get your copy of the movie, pause at zero and then press play when count down here. So at five, three,

Speaker: three two one play

Speaker: Wow, that sound had like a lot of everything. That was that was like orchestral, but it had like the blaxploitation symbol crashing going on. Like it was going to be a car chase. Yeah.

Speaker: They didn't spend a lot of the titles. Oh, they didn't.

Speaker: It's like you could hear the the other another movie playing in the theater while you're watching this. Mm-hmm.

Speaker: Like, could they not afford the film rights to those movies? They're just playing the audio track of something else?

Speaker: Yeah, what i wonder like I wonder if we're going to see like actual like film footage or if it's going to audio. And it's audio, like, you can you could have audio, and that doesn't, like... ah It's not, like, the same as, like, licensing the actual footage.

Speaker: Okay, I get that it's the 80s, but why is every cinema fan, cinemaphile, ah like like their bedroom room with these their bedroom room is the same like layout in almost every movie. Just all posters, yeah.

Speaker: Posters, the like... mot like What if he's got some bottles, like some monster bottles? Maybe, but he's got his own like 9mm film reel like in his room. like he You know, he lives in a basically a movie theater. I think about... ah back to school where the two like monster fan, like the horror creature guys. And like, that's their room is this. Or it's like, it's like eve like every every Joe Dante character. yup

Speaker: I'm like the the tiniest TV in his room. he has a bigger TV right next to it. Yeah.

Speaker: Okay, even for the 80s, why does he look dressed like this? I mean, i guess they were nostalgic for the 50s, like back to the future. that makes sense. This is like that error if it's 20 years prior.

Speaker: Or maybe he's just like he's way ahead of the curve for like the swing revival. Too early. it's like t 19 years from now, there'll be a swing revival. It'd be commercials and music videos and and clothing, and then nobody would want it again.

Speaker: But speaking of that, like we're almost due for a new like swing revile, aren't we? Maybe. The Big Bad Voodoo Daddies are coming back. the chery be sad It wouldn't be them, but it'd be like another. yeah It'd be something zoot so weird like the Zoot Suit Boys or something.

Speaker: Were

Speaker: they part of a dance team? made

Speaker: dance

Speaker: It's very big, like, Mommy Dearest vibes.

Speaker: And also a little bit of Batman.

Speaker: Why does this guy, like, act like he's a... ah Teenager? like ah But he's he's supposed to be, like, in his late 20s. Yeah. He's not a teen, I think.

Speaker: Try and enjoy my fruit and cigarette breakfast.

Speaker: Get it? Wow.

Speaker: this This is like... Have you seen have you seen Sugar yet on Apple TV? Parts of it. Like, because they just they show random film clips. It's like this? Yeah, it's just like... Those intercut, like, Conferos, like, talking about something else that show, like, clips from, like, old movies. Because he's like this? Like, he's a big... He's upset. Yeah, he's like a huge, like, cinephile obsessed with, like, old, like, 40s movies.

Speaker: I've used the chivvy.

Speaker: Was this the warehouse was like, Reels of Lost Ark? This is an actual like, film warehouse. Like, this isn't a set.

Speaker: Is this the American cinema like, warehouse? I don't

Speaker: think you be smoking in here because I feel like all this film is flammable. It's all nitrate, yeah.

Speaker: Bintford Studio.

Speaker: trying I'm trying to see like what posters in the background.

Speaker: Tourist Trap. Halloween. Halloween.

Speaker: its ah It's a company Vespa? Yeah, I know. It makes sense that he drove a scooter, but he drives the company scooter.

Speaker: i think there was there was like a dune buggy outside, too. Was that a company dune buggy? i think that's just like props.

Speaker: I don't know. The boss isn't... He's mean, but, you know... He's still trying keep this like company afloat.

Speaker: ah Okay, this guy's a social worker. oh Did we miss his name? they't They haven't said it yet. but it's it's It's Tim Thomerson.

Speaker: oh It's weird that like the cop is just like a generation behind. like Oh, Irish? Whatever.

Speaker: He's Dutchie Moriarty.

Speaker: you very much of a Sherlock Holmes.

Speaker: Why is the captain like a New York? like a In LA? Yeah, he's like ah an old school like, yeah. Old school like, for s cop

Speaker: Who's a sexy lady cop?

Speaker: Tim Towers, gotta be careful that she's not a trancer.

Speaker: That's like his big claim to fame is that he was like the main guy in all the trancer movies.

Speaker: Is he the dad that gets kidnapped in Iron Eagles?

Speaker: I mean, I think he was in Iron Eagle. I don came't remember if he was the dad or not. Oh, yeah, he was. That's what I'm like. think I know him from that.

Speaker: So this is Gwendolyn Gilford. She was an actress from the late 60s to the mid 80s. And then just became a psychiatrist. How ironic.

Speaker: She's trying to psychoanalyze Tim Thomason over here, but apparently that part wasn't acting. She became a psychiatrist.

Speaker: Also, ah Gwendolyn Guilford, mother to Chris Pine. Okay. Yeah, that's why I'm like, sexy cop is sexy.

Speaker: Who else is sexy? Chris Pine. it's like Yeah. ah Like, her last year of acting, she met Robert Pine and then had Chris Pine.

Speaker: And then she became a psychiatrist.

Speaker: Now you know. That's something this movie, Fade to Black, has taught us. Mm-hmm.

Speaker: Baby Mickey Rourke. Baby Mickey Rourke.

Speaker: What a weird nerd fight to have. yeah

Speaker: Hardcore movie trivia.

Speaker: Mickey Rourke as the ultimate cinephile like, What full name? You mean Rick, owns the Cafe American? The

Speaker: character?

Speaker: Wait a minute, wait a minute.

Speaker: own name.

Speaker: man, him and his fucking trivia. Works at a movie processing planner wherever this is, then knows all about movies.

Speaker: What's with you?

Speaker: In case you didn't get it, then she looks like Marilyn Monroe.

Speaker: Would you guess like, Linda Carriage, I guess that's, like, her entire, like, claim to fame is that she looks like Marilyn Monroe.

Speaker: See, this is like a Mystery Science Theater 2000 skit right here, where it's like, this would be a PSA video of like, are you a film nerd in Hollywood? Should you talk to like these people without an actual like plan?

Speaker: Also, this is still the 80s, like the beginning of the 80s. So yeah, this is like you either you're talking to a rising star or an adult actress, you know, crap shoot.

Speaker: How's everyone listening to like his trivia?

Speaker: like They're really thinking about it. not like yeah

Speaker: like It tickles their like oh movie insight. you know I love movie trivia. yeah yeah Was that like new? so Everyone's like in on it?

Speaker: See? like She's sort of like, this is weird.

Speaker: So everyone keeps insulting his movie knowledge and that's what's go to make him to a killer? Yeah.

Speaker: Movie's the most important thing in the world!

Speaker: Yeah, hop on my Vespa. So cool. So dangerous to have two people on a Vespa. You can sit backwards on the box that's in the back.

Speaker: I feel like if they didn't do the quick cutaways to remind people about the movies...

Speaker: You're In my town, the Australian Alpshadeh.

Speaker: Well, let's go skating. think she works there or wants to go there.

Speaker: Do like Australian girls have like no so like creep senses? I don't know. It seemed like they actually had a genuine connection.

Speaker: like oh i love I love movie trivia. I'm terrible at it. this character?

Speaker: sort of like is he playing i know he's a social worker, but he's got a cocaine problem. he yeah He's working with criminal reform. Is he in the cop basement? he's yeah they She said it said that used to the drunk tank.

Speaker: But he just did a line of coke, like... Like, he's high at work? What? Like, the police dog he has the past would be like, what's up with this? I want to see, like... Because he's supposed be helping, like, delinquents, right?

Speaker: Something that, right? Like, you can get him back. I just want to see, like, the crosscut, and it's just, like, all the kids are staring at him, like, slack jawed. It's like, what is happening?

Speaker: He did that coke in private, but it's, like, four kids in front of him. It's like, Alright, so what we talking about, kids? Let me talk about your drug problems.

Speaker: he's yeah He's throwing coke in the basement of the police station.

Speaker: Did not see that coming, know.

Speaker: Ritz? Wow. Sex and Ritz. Is he like he's like George Costanza? You

Speaker: you know, I can't really finish sex unless I have like a handful of incorporating food and sex. Just like... But Ritz by itself is kind of dry after like two. Is that why he needs a whole bottle of like champagne? Yeah.

Speaker: what's up with this guy like this i get he's supposed to be like very hippie like liberal free thinking but that's little too weird to be like to be this it's like it's ah it's like media it's like the like video games are causing violence but but it's like the movies are causing violence

Speaker: oh my god like is this loaded loaded You know, for a cop, don't don't just let the guy you're banging you met, like, yesterday

Speaker: Cool.

Speaker: Wanna do some coke?

Speaker: yeah I thought she she like judged him little harsh the beginning, which was sort of like, you know, it's hard to judge people based on their attitude, blah, blah, blah. Now it's just like, woo! I like how you're just stupid. love him.

Speaker: You know, in a modern setting, this would be like a love on the spectrum thing. This is a very like, okay.

Speaker: Yep, the feeling. Uh-oh. Uh-oh. feeling to say oh

Speaker: know

Speaker: Why does Aunt Stella carry money like in her bra strap? In her own home?

Speaker: This works for Aunt Stella? She's like into that? Yeah......................

Speaker: You think he's constantly smoking because like everyone in old movies constantly smokes? Yeah, no. He's obsessed with living in the 50s style thing. He just acts their mannerism.

Speaker: That was established early. The abusive aunt mentioned that. Mm-hmm.

Speaker: Wait, there's like multiple- think she's approaching any blonde woman.

Speaker: I don't think that was planned, that was just part of what filming- What the hell? no but i think that was just part of, like, the city. They just concluded that. That was a shooting the rodeo? Yup, that is definitely shooting the rodeo.

Speaker: It's like, oh, you guys shoot a movie? Yeah!

Speaker: Oh yeah, this is a killer movie and not a drama about this cinephile. it has all It could have went one of two ways. a movie about a guy who's obsessed with movies and doesn't know how to like communicate in a modern world.

Speaker: Or ah a tragic horror villain guy that like needs his... catalyst to start murdering. It's not like he's getting bullied in a movie theater right now, right?

Speaker: he's not like It's not like a he's got tormentors on his job. If that was the case, Mickey Rourke's character would come back right now and just like beat him up and with like a film reel. Yeah.

Speaker: Think you know movies? Huh? You think you know movies? Yeah.

Speaker: I don't know who that was. I think it's Hopalong Cassidy, maybe? Because he has a watch?

Speaker: It's like, what would you do, Hopalong? Kill everybody? okay

Speaker: don't know if $10 was lot or a little in the 80s rate. Yeah, what's what's most inflation? Yeah.

Speaker: we going to watch the massage scene now?

Speaker: $10 would be $40 in today's money. Whoa.

Speaker: That's a lot of 80s street walking. Mm-hmm.

Speaker: Also, for why is he playing his like film thing on like such a rockety film projector? don't know what's going on. It's like he's watching his movie at sea. It's like askew. Well, it's like moving up and down. that i'm like That's usually just whatever you're projecting off of. m

Speaker: Where's my back massage?

Speaker: You promised me.

Speaker: She's beat him with a warrior hair

Speaker: he's learning.

Speaker: Tim Thomerson is right. Movies cause people to go crazy. Well, Tim Thomerson was wrong about, like... being preventable I guess watching too many 30s movies is going to do this to you yeah the goal of the golden age of Hollywood is dangerous that's why we don't watch it it's like this is actually proven true

Speaker: Man, how's it playing from that angle on the floor? Yeah.

Speaker: Thank you.

Speaker: yes

Speaker: did Did Friday the 13th Part 2 copy this? of like with your kill found Yeah. Yeah.

Speaker: It's weird to think this is like... He sort of becomes like the Joker. Mm-hmm.

Speaker: But instead of like comedy things and like certain gangster movies, like like if this guy just painted his face white with like red lipstick, he's just the Joker.

Speaker: Is he going to say his one-liner thing? Is he like the cast of the movie? Yeah, like...

Speaker: it did and it like He must have been like really close to the edge of Snappin because it's like he gets stood up for a date and then his his aunt breaks his projector and he's now he's a homicidal maniac. The movie had a move, but it didn't have more abusive...

Speaker: things building up like just like taxi driver or you know the joker the modern joker movies with joaquin phoenix yeah he you you need it like a a years of like it's kind of showing the years of abuse yeah like his standard moment his boss need to be like really like mean to him like he worked need to be like physically i beat the shit out of him like

Speaker: this is This is what Joker ripped off. This is actually like a rip-off of Joker.

Speaker: Why is everyone doing like the cha-cha slide?

Speaker: Because it's freezing out, apparently, in Los Angeles. Just like 62 degrees. It's like, oh my god, it's so cold. What?

Speaker: Tracy, get out of this case.

Speaker: I don't have time. I to go fight Pruneface.

Speaker: Man, Hollywood changes everybody. Is he like a megachurch pastor or something? I don't know. He's not like... a he's He's not exactly been established as the first time we've seen this guy.

Speaker: like how their house is also like, it's like a haunted house. And it's like, the rest the neighborhood neighborhood is like normal houses.

Speaker: And this, uh... Carrots can make you well. But this house also has an elevator like part in it. Interesting.

Speaker: Uh oh, he's on his own crazy board. Yep. he's He's tracking his accomplishments.

Speaker: so god you've read in the mailbox to James Cagney's character Eric Benford's dead I'm Cody Jarrett now

Speaker: this is the youngest postal worker I've ever seen yeah

Speaker: You still got mail. Okay. It's

Speaker: definitely like an l LA like postal worker. Like she, she also wants to be like a model slash actor. Oh yeah.

Speaker: Did he put up his own street sign? Is that like a legal? I think it's not. Like, if it's on the corner, or did he put it over his own house?

Speaker: If you put it on an actual... Like, city, like, light post? Yeah, I think that's a that's very illegal.

Speaker: Oh, crap. He's Two-Face. Yeah.

Speaker: Did this revolutionize, like, 80s music videos? says i see I swear I've seen, like, this style thing.

Speaker: Well, that's... that What is that character? That's a vampire. He's trying to go for, like, the cinema vampire look that looks better in black and white film than in person.

Speaker: You're right, though. That that was, like, a... like There was, like, a... can't remember who, like, the... like musician was like but it they had like that that look right i'm just like was it falco maybe maybe it's someone like that it's someone that definitely was just like they were inspired from their early like the definition of the the decade and this is really early or who's the guy the guy they put did like the remake of like putting on the ritz yeah that guy had that look

Speaker: Taco. taco But I don't think he had the black and white. He did the hair, but didn't do yeah color.

Speaker: That's like putting on the Ritz and come out for another four years, I think. In this era.

Speaker: but Zach, we're big movie fans. Do you ever think we go to movie theaters like this and just be like enthralled? Like, oh. Okay, that I get. It's not a lot of horror, right?

Speaker: But like the main... But like Eric is just like, oh yeah. He's like, I've never yeah i've never realized Night the Living Dead.

Speaker: or maybe he's like, oh yeah, mean I should start eating people.

Speaker: Maybe. Maybe that's like his... next He gets his like influence from the movie he currently watches. But the last time was just like by accident. you know That was just a happenstance.

Speaker: Talk about living that cosplay life a little too hard. Yeah. I'm just like Marilyn. Ha ha ha ha ha. You know, this this kind of generation, like the last girl who wanted to be like Marilyn is like...

Speaker: That's done, right? Like, you don't really see that anymore. a Nowadays, a lot of girls are like, I want to be my own brand.

Speaker: They like the idea of a Marilyn, but it's not like, oh, I gotta be like her. it Living her lifestyle, just being drunk. The only thing I think of is like, who's who's that guy that like looks like Charles Bronson?

Speaker: Oh, that like... The Kurt guy? Yeah, yeah, yeah. He's like from like Eastern Europe? Yeah, no but he got lucky and he sort of just doesn't really act. He just sort of like does his best.

Speaker: That I get, but that's like a... I don't know how to describe that. It's like such a knockoff. It's like a Bruce Lee kind of thing. but for Bronson.

Speaker: I don't know who's still doing this.

Speaker: like I know Sydney Sweeney sort of gets compared to Marilyn, but she's kind of her own thing.

Speaker: Well, this movie was balls enough to show nudity?

Speaker: It was the 80s. But like it just became the of Because they're doing a psycho homage right now. Yeah. Which didt didn't show nudity, but I guess it's the 80s, so it's like, ooh.

Speaker: But it's not quite psycho because it wasn't dressed like Dracula. Yeah, Eric, you're cinephile. You gotta be dressed as your aunt or something.

Speaker: I'm gonna do this homage well. I'm gonna do it perfect.

Speaker: yeah Okay. All right. Yeah. That's like a parody movie by accident. Wait, he's going to go after the hooker that was mean to him on the street.

Speaker: That's your reason.

Speaker: Yeah. and Anyone who's like slightly mean to him or got to say to him, it's like dead. No.

Speaker: Oh, they're going with Christopher Lee? Interesting choice. Yeah, I was like, yeah, that was a start to build a go see.

Speaker: Wait, lady, you're afraid of this? a Dracula? Like, you look you seem to like you are in a rough neighborhood. a Dracula cosplayer wouldn't be the thing that makes me scared.

Speaker: Who doesn't have, like, a weapon? Does he have, like, a gun or a knife or anything? No, he just has a cape, and she's like, oh my god, my weakness is vampires. It's it's a vampire! Like, does she think it's real?

Speaker: i get it, it's annoying, but I'm sure she's seen much like harsher things on the streets. Yeah. Like an actual 80s, 70s gang or something.

Speaker: Blah! Blah!

Speaker: Blah! Yeah. Ma'am? I was just joking.

Speaker: What did she land on? Like a fence. I thought she knocked the fence down. How did it get it in her neck? but

Speaker: I mean, if it was like a wrought iron fence, I would definitely... like I could see that happening. Right.

Speaker: But she clearly pushed the fence down. I guess it's the second peg? She pushed the top layer? It snapped and like was jagged or something, maybe? Yeah. Yeah. It just didn't seem like killing.

Speaker: Obviously something happened, but it's just like, what? Well, I am Dracula.

Speaker: Dude, come on. man Oh, God. Don't drink hooker blood. i don't you know is Is it dawning on him? He shouldn't drink hooker blood. I want see, like, the next day at the doctor's office, where well, Eric, we went over your, ah you somehow got STDs on your, ah like, every STD in your mouth. I've

Speaker: id never seen someone get gonorrhea in their mouth.

Speaker: Oh, movie guy went to a movie premiere in Dracula outfit. Wait, is it just like a an article about the premiere or that a Dracula killed someone?

Speaker: Did anyone witness it?

Speaker: It's weird that the doom buggy is owned by those guys.

Speaker: No one knows that. That's a deep thing. Double two.

Speaker: Wow, his half-luck nasty mask.

Speaker: It would have been nice if like there were hints about the movies earlier and not just sort of the clips. e Where it's like he talks about his favorite movies and then when these things happen he he he just refers to them.

Speaker: Yeah, it seems like he just randomly puts one out and he's like, oh yeah, this movie. I'm going to go kill someone like this now.

Speaker: Yeah, two grown men on like a carnival date. Yeah.

Speaker: Can't believe he knows so much more movies than me.

Speaker: like going on on like an obvious like Hollywood film set. like Where is this in this like town? It's like the debated part of the boardwalk. But it's like ah the most cowboy-esque area.

Speaker: You

Speaker: know, this this is like a Hollywood Horror Nights. Yeah, it's like Westworld. Yeah, it's like Universal would set this up.

Speaker: oh Richie drunk? I guess was alright. He literally just got shot at, yeah.

Speaker: Oh.

Speaker: Also, when when did, uh... Eric get a gun? Well, Eric knows how to shoot, like, a cult in single action.

Speaker: But why is he, like, Westworld style? Yeah, he's moving like a robot.

Speaker: Are we going to see the police show up in this movie?

Speaker: I guess not. because the completely The social worker might show up and do something............................

Speaker: I don't you'd be a tough guy wearing an overall. On a Vespa. A Vespa don't own.

Speaker: What the hell are you trying to pull? We question all those CFS employees very carefully. Normal police procedure.

Speaker: Now who the hell gave you the authority to test them? picked this question here to help you. What? That's exactly the right word. I'm hearing about that. Your information is the

Speaker: He's a mind hunter.

Speaker: Women can't be killers.

Speaker: I mean, once I got to bang Officer McHotty over there, instantly me Captain, I know the especially sick

Speaker: ones.

Speaker: What?

Speaker: Does he know this person?

Speaker: This like rich guy just like handing out free rides? It's like like he thirty s car.

Speaker: I used

Speaker: also doing coke? Or just weed Okay. is He's high, just picking up strangers? You Gary Pialy,

Speaker: you? You, uh, you produced big rip-off, Yep, I Four Goods of the Year.

Speaker: Listen, this idea for movie, sort of like an early Sam Fuller piece, you know, kind of, and they break at it.

Speaker: Really? really

Speaker: i mean, the they're both high. It's a weird title.

Speaker: Is this all you had to do? Was just like walk around? Hopefully a producer picks you up and you walk to the shop? That's how LA works.

Speaker: I bet you this guy's going to steal the movie idea.

Speaker: Bye. That was a great day of work. Or evening. I don't know. did Was that morning? Yeah.

Speaker: Do you have a script, Eric? Or is it literally just like a one-line idea, like elevator pitch that says? I think that's what it is.

Speaker: But when did when did he establish he had a movie idea? I think just literally just that. That came to him at a random...

Speaker: That would have made sense like for like part of his homicidal turn, too, if like he like was trying to pitch ideas and like the producer was like, this is shit, kid. you like You're horrible. Yeah, right? And he's like, well, I'll show you what's horrible. I'll be killing you Just like killing his like like a hit list of people in order to get his movie made or destroy the movie executive?

Speaker: Oh my god. Is this his tough guy clothes? Yeah.

Speaker: Oh, and then it's just like gorilla footage of trying to film the rodeo. We don't have a permit to shoot here. It's like, just keep it low key. It's filmed like out of a bag. There's like a guy that stared right at the camera.

Speaker: Yep.

Speaker: Hey, y'all filming a movie?

Speaker: Hollywood! Hollywood!

Speaker: Okay, thank you, bye!

Speaker: Was that, like, acting? Or that actor just abused whatever, like, random person?

Speaker: it's 1980 man live with it now

Speaker: this like a typical day for eric's like walking around it's like abusing people i mean i guess

Speaker: The end of the month of Halloween. Halloween 78? Yeah, it wasn't that like much like before this. I mean, maybe because he works at the movie place, he he just stole a reel or something.

Speaker: But then how did he digitize it? I'm just saying i say like the actual movie has to got the rights to the Halloween. Oh, that's true. like like I understand like these older movies, but there wasn't that much to license them.

Speaker: Right, right. Halloween, you had to grab like the sound. Well, didn't show it. They didn't show it, so maybe it doesn't count. Oh, why are they showing this? This is the sex scene of the movie?

Speaker: Well, I hope you guys like the character of Eric Why the Sinister of Music?

Speaker: Jesus, guys. Evil climaxing sounds terrible. the angry

Speaker: You bitch. You sexy bitch. I love you.

Speaker: That's more like a seizure than like waking up. I think he he had like a stroke.

Speaker: Alright, now the masturbation scene begins.

Speaker: Anyway... After this, he sold the song rights to Candle in the Wind to Elton John.

Speaker: Also, is this just like his outfit now? Like he's worn it like three days in a row. Oh yeah, a badass.

Speaker: Oh yeah, I'm a badass.

Speaker: I like his like Robert De Niro accent. a Or like Al Pacino like. Maybe it was woo-wah. Shit.

Speaker: And Al Pacino said,

Speaker: my name's Cody.

Speaker: I'm Tony Jarrett and don't ever forget it. Get goddamn hands off me and get the hell out of here. You're fired. Okay. where do you think you're going? Out of my way. This is my place of vision. You're not inside.

Speaker: You're not supposed to. You're

Speaker: not going to reach me. want him. You forget him. If anything inside belongs to might help the pain of some of your throw up Oh,

Speaker: ah now now it's not ironic.

Speaker: you its the best thing that could happen to me hello Fuck your Vespa!

Speaker: My pills!

Speaker: Damn, damn 50s theme punks.

Speaker: Like, it's gotta be weird for that guy, because that guy grew up in that era of, like, gangster movies. And then... And he works in a film, like, processing plant, or, like, warehouse, wherever this is. Right, right. So he's constantly surrounded by movie things. And then you have this super nerd cinephile guy who tries to threaten you with, like, cagney. Like,

Speaker: It's like, i knew Cagney. would know Cagney. It's weird to get insulted by semi-amateur Cagney impression.........................

Speaker: depression

Speaker: Put that bell on?

Speaker: We need to be working right around here.

Speaker: It's a ghost!

Speaker: why is the boss having like a existential crisis? Yeah.

Speaker: on and into plate anyway owner

Speaker: Is he like a electrical expert now too? Like he's rigging traps?

Speaker: guess he did. Oh, I guess I'll see this in the dark.

Speaker: Heart meds and midnight whiskey.

Speaker: like how Bedford wasn't strong enough to do anything because I put his hands on the wall.

Speaker: why are people like so so freaked out about about like universal monsters oh my god it's a real mummy know just like what he doesn't have a weapon he's dragging himself like movie accurate yeah and it's still like the same weight and height as Bedford so he wasn't like an imposing dude yeah

Speaker: But they're like, oh my god! yes He's very slowly catching up to me!

Speaker: Thank god whoever he's been targeting, he finds out their worst fear is a Hollywood movie icon. Is it?

Speaker: Well, the hooker was just... dumb. Bedford's like, you're around movie things. Like, this could just be an actor or something. and He's like freaked out like this.

Speaker: Help me. I'm lost on set.

Speaker: Like not even like not even like questioning that it's not real. It's like this is a real mummy that's trying to kill me. Yeah.

Speaker: And why is Eric, like, if he's if he changes his name to Cody Jarrett, why is he not going around with, like, James Cagney? He's doing all these other, like, monsters and Hopalong Cassidy and... I don't know. The theming is everywhere now.

Speaker: Damn, look at that big screen TV.

Speaker: yeah

Speaker: This time, let me see, I was feeling

Speaker: feel kind of sound

Speaker: riding home is for meeting with dick and ba like very thomas for coming and sharing the insights with

Speaker: lu

Speaker: How did he get this number? I know, he just called the studio and they put it right through. every studio's Remember, have picture of think of the idea

Speaker: my movie.

Speaker: I'm gonna get you a C.

Speaker: Well, I better go get my Wolfman costume ready to go.

Speaker: is he supposed to be like the Lyle Chaney look? And then he Wolfmans it?

Speaker: he going to go get a Tommy gun? Where'd he get his car?

Speaker: <unk>t the really Is this his hair cutting place? Like his salon gave him a story?

Speaker: Okay, I was joking about the Tommy gun, but come on. where Where's Eric getting all this stuff?

Speaker: Like they said he got insurance, like payment for his but for those aunts, but like it couldn't have been that much, right? I guess it was a crazy amount on her.

Speaker: Happy birthday, sucker. A real live birthday card. Which one of your chauffeurs is responsible for this? That's That's too, too much. Everybody out

Speaker: out.

Speaker: a lotla fly Okay, so I think they hired him for this movie based on like his accent for Cagney, right? It's not like a bad Cagney, but it's his most like strongest performance, right?

Speaker: Yeah, I mean, it's... It's okay. he's like um It's not amazing, but in sense of his other killer like personas, this is the most that's like personable.

Speaker: In this part where it doesn't really go like a horror movie, this is just like a crime scene now.

Speaker: Keep the change, you filthy animal.

Speaker: Nobody's gonna get birthdays at the hair salon anymore because of this incident.

Speaker: It's also broad daylight, no mask. like yeah so saying like he doesn't... They're going to easily describe him as like yeah like this dude with like this nose and all that, but the other ones wear costumes.

Speaker: Marilyn. She's finally sober involved doesn't orphan. Okay. woman. She's woman.

Speaker: they had cold because they stopped said that they wanted man in the road. Oh, that's where? It's nice. Well, you're not going to log.

Speaker: got a car and don't. Uh-oh. At least she's smart about, like, bringing a friend to these weird auditions. Mm-hmm. going who conversation. Sounds quite ridiculous It's so naive.

Speaker: only you runs around and a crackul and a mummy up its kill people but he's okay

Speaker: Was the dead giveaway like the giant like illegal sign? Mm-hmm

Speaker: Tim Thomerson isn't a cinephile. he's like, hmm. I only watch new stuff. There are movies. it's he's He's established that he's a hippie, so he's like bit off the grid. He doesn't get like pop culture.

Speaker: I'm not a movie guy. Listen to music.

Speaker: Did Eric buy this entire building? Guess so. How much money did this ant leave behind?

Speaker: he's but he's but He's buying film-accurate monster costumes. He's buying wheel guns. He's buying antique cars.

Speaker: like, this thing's fine. he set up a whole door system.

Speaker: What was holding back Eric in his, like, kind of brilliance? Was it just money? Because he suddenly became, like, he became charming, suave, like, all of it's coming together. was weird plan.

Speaker: Mm-hmm.

Speaker: What?

Speaker: So...

Speaker: Okay, so the aunt wasn't the aunt. That was the real mother. Yeah.

Speaker: But it doesn't have any effect because she's been dead for like an hour. Well, it kind of shows the abuse. Because remember, she got massages, and we're like, I don't know if it was more than that, or whatever.

Speaker: So kind of gross.

Speaker: And then she's like, I killed, then you like you killed, or youre your mother died in childbirth.

Speaker: so Is this the photo shoot? Oh, wait. Is she not freaked out by her being attacked by Dracula that one time?

Speaker: Right? Like... I guess... doesn't recognize him without, make like, makeup on, because they were going date. she recognize him on that date? Or, like, the first time meeting him?

Speaker: Yeah, so say that she doesn't. So it's like...

Speaker: Is it like years later?

Speaker: So who's taking the pitches?

Speaker: I'm just going to get cock-blocked by this detective. and I'm not even a detective, just like a patrol woman and like a social worker.

Speaker: I guess like, we've never seen him work with any kids. He did like off-screen tests. Yeah, like off-screen. Yeah, it's an off-screen thing.

Speaker: she She's accepted that weird pill. yeah like here takes This giant tablet.

Speaker: Oh no, our main character, I guess.

Speaker: Therapy didn't work.

Speaker: I called him fucking lunatic. That's all I got. Yeah, he it wasn't even therapy. It was just like, insult him and then call him out. And then that way you just find this guy's weird rage.

Speaker: It just, ow, my leg. It's all he yeah like he got a cut. It's like you got shot in your leg. He's taking this really well.

Speaker: And they got pretty far. Like, they are on Hollywood Boulevard.

Speaker: Tommy Lee Jones' daughter. Oh, Cole Miner's daughter.

Speaker: It'd be hilarious if this is the premiere, like Tommy Lee Jones is there in a cameo. Let's see Let's see this movie we got away with it.

Speaker: man, this is the worst like sh street performers that just invade the Chinese Hollywood theater.

Speaker: This doesn't have anything Cold Miner's Daughter. Tommy Jones is sitting there like, where where's my movie?

Speaker: Wait, how did the female cop not be able to run in? Like, let him go in with, like, a ah shot leg? all right It's alright, I'll wait for backup. You can go in, though. Go use your psychiatry.

Speaker: Mind freak him.

Speaker: Are we still thinking i was still taking photos?

Speaker: He freaked her out by saying, run, lady, run. He's the worst psychiatrist. she had like She had it. Yeah, but he freaked her out. And then, like, he just, by shouting, he didn't just be like, okay.

Speaker: Like, is the psychiatrist high, too? Probably. ah yeah, he's on cocaine. Yep.

Speaker: He just, like, does cocaine in front of him. Like, listen, listen. All right. I've got a plan.

Speaker: More drugs? my

Speaker: I want him to shout something like solely bad advice. Like, Eric, yeah show us the gun. Wave it at me.

Speaker: Did he just push her off the roof? I think back the roof. Okay. back on to the roof okay

Speaker: Yeah, he's overdosed over there. i'm gonna go try to mimic a scene I saw in a movie.

Speaker: Also, it's the 80s. Where the hell did he get barbiturates? Yeah.

Speaker: For your Oscar consideration.

Speaker: I wish he had been a monster for this scene. Like, Frankenstein's monster or something. Well, he's to be Coded Jarrett, which was his only monster.

Speaker: The police are just waiting. They're like, I guess we won't storm the building. won't do anything. just yes You guys say he's dead? yeah like they're taking bets on what would happen.

Speaker: They're not even trying to, like, breach. It's like, what's stopping, like, SWAT to just go with through the basement or whatever? There's like there's literally no one in the theater. Like, just SWAT needs to go through the theater and go through the roof.

Speaker: Like, it's one man on a roof.

Speaker: How come there's another not another sniper on another opposing roof?

Speaker: do core Must Must finish scene.

Speaker: i got Even the people in the street, like, they're just waiting and quiet. They're just like, oh, wonder what's going to happen next. is Is this part of Coal Miner? Is this, like, a weird, like, Coal Miner's daughter, like, promo?

Speaker: Is he Tommy Jones just, like, confused?...............

Speaker: Just the end of the movie says, like, movies kill. Yeah.

Speaker: Oh, not even. Not even, a like, a full closure.

Speaker: How's the Reverend's second build?

Speaker: Not feeling a lot of jokes at this point, Zach? i I'm sure I feel like this song is like ah like a Bond song or something. What is this end credit song?

Speaker: Yeah, i don't think this going to pick up like a beat. This is just supposed to be like a downbeat song.

Speaker: But it doesn't really have a rhythm.

Speaker: Heroes have so much they have to give. Okay.

Speaker: Goldfinger!

Speaker: This one, this should have been a song about like Fade to Black. Like something, right? this what I know it's not Metallica's song. It's coming up soon for Fade to Black, but... Yeah, there should have but should have been like a like rock song that's like Fade to Black or something.

Speaker: Yeah, like not a Metallica Fade to Black because that is what I always think, but yeah I really hope Fade to Black isn't a homage to this. Heroes. What? Theme from Fade Black, Heroes.

Speaker: It's so wordy. Marsha Hunt, Craig Safan.

Speaker: Man, way more songs than you, I think. like It was still in the background or something. Well, Marsha and the Vendetta had three songs on this. Call me bitch. like I gotta look them up. I don't know if they were a good band or just a band.

Speaker: Yeah, i'm I'm shocked the Chinese Theater let them like film at the time like on the roof of the Chinese Theater.

Speaker: man, what ah what a weird way to end this 80s slasher movie. like A sad drama song. sad downbeat. like The soundtrack is something you hear. like That song is something you hear out of like a movie about a divorced family.

Speaker: Whatever. It's not even like a horror theme. It's not even a like spooky hall Halloween. Because the idea is that this is just like a random April this happens. Because it's not tied into a horror like October.

Speaker: So yeah that's out. I'm wrong about assuming that from the cover. And then... It's really about like Golden Age movies. More than the icons. Because...

Speaker: two of the horror kind of personas are horror, but it's, like, done so, like, PG-13, where most of the time it's just, like, accidents that he causes. Mm-hmm.

Speaker: And then the more other roles that he talks and performs in, like the cowboy and the gangster, it's like, he should have just shoots people. Yeah.

Speaker: So, I don't know. like it's I have to... like for This would be an October commentary. It's weird because it it kind of fit it's just enough horror elements in it to qualify.

Speaker: And the rest is just like this guy's psychotic breakdown. But none of it is very like themed correctly. Well, the horror stuff like is kind of weird because he he seems more of like a Western like gangster movie fan. But then...

Speaker: two like yeah two of his costumes are the Mummy and Dracula. And he's going to like a Night the Living Dead like midnight show. But his room doesn't have a lot monster stuff in it. He doesn't have a lot monster movie posters or anything. He's like a Joe Dante, I love monster movies and monster magazines and biggest monsters of film land and stuff. It's like all Cagney and Marilyn and Bogart. It's a classic golden age. So if that was the case, I think his stick would have been like a fake gangster all the time.

Speaker: and then like, see here, talking to my girl, see, like, that that would be still silly, but it would be, like, themed. m

Speaker: ah Yeah, like, it's right in the middle of the road where I appreciate seeing this just because it's got, like, a crazy on-site location and, and like, ah you know this movie's about the struggle to make it in Hollywood, and it's not an easy journey.

Speaker: Yeah, it's ah definitely has like bumpage. Well, his his desire to like make a movie comes like so far as through the movie, there's like no indication that he wanted that as like a goal.

Speaker: Yeah. That sort of just pops and you're like, what?

Speaker: And then he doesn't even get the venge off the director. Like, that should have been his breaking moment. Well, but the like yeah, he killed, mean, he kills the producer in, like, the barbershop, but. But that's, like, sort of, like, felt like anyone else on his hit list.

Speaker: Mm-hmm. It's sort of just, like, that should have been, like, working his way up instead of, he's been doing a really, like, a crazy, like, murder spree, then gets in that guy's car, and they're just like, well, you entered my list.

Speaker: Mm-hmm. you arere You're slightly mean to me. i mean, he stole his like idea, so I get that. But see, that's more weighted versus the like the guy that won't give you $40 because he couldn't beat trivia.

Speaker: yeah

Speaker: yeah I think we were saying, like, it definitely he definitely needed, like like, he needed to be more beaten down. Like, he needed, like, Joker-style, like, like, uh, like, Wucky Fenix where just, like, he's, like, so beaten down, like, and it just, like, snaps at one point.

Speaker: But besides besides, like, his aunt-mom that's, like, you know, like, abusing him, maybe, or something, or, like, like, me him, like, everyone else is kind of just, like, slightly mean to him. Yeah.

Speaker: And he, but he's also, like, and if that His day like going around like you know yelling at people that Marilyn Monroe is still alive, that's like typical for his day, he's also an asshole.

Speaker: He's more of an asshole than they are. In the beginning of the movie, he's very meek, but then he's like, I'm the cool guy now. It's like, were you doing this already and just kind of getting harassed by the locals?

Speaker: Going to that woman that's harassing you, you're like, hey, you know Marilyn Monroe still live here? What room are you in? Yeah, I'm like, that would like Did he do that before, but with less confidence?

Speaker: yeah like Hey, do you you know Mary's still live here? Yeah, that's exactly what the performance I'm i'm thinking of. or like it It would be that caliber, and then it's like, okay, so he just became a mean version of that now.

Speaker: And it's like, now that he's like sinister, it's more threatening than before. But, no. we his we like The movie sort of told it out of order. So that's like my critique is that I think it stops it from being more of a memorable like maniac movie because this is not like the first type of its genre.

Speaker: I think I've seen other movies like it like especially with the Elijah Wood mania and then or maniac and then even that weird John Travolta movie where like he was stalking a movie star. Is that just called stalker?

Speaker: or Or fan? The fan? Yeah I think the fan. And even ah The other fan, with like Robert Niro, stalks Wesley Snipes.

Speaker: okay No, but there's a... the That's the fan, but what the John Travolta one? Oh, um... Was it was it the was was the... Was it it wasn't the fanatic? Was it the fanatic or just the... I think it was the fanatic. Okay, the fanatic.

Speaker: Yeah. Yeah. So yeah, that that's what I'm saying. like it It's not the only movie that does that. But I do admit that the twist in this one is that the guy itself, like his whole reality of being like a movie nerd plays into his persona. Where a lot of those times those in those fanatic movies where the killer fan, ah they just sort of like show up and then just they kill people as themselves.

Speaker: Yeah, and like that one, like the fan and the fanatic are like, they think that the person they're obsessed with is like their friend or becomes their friend because they were like nice to them once. And then they become like insane like, well, he's my friend. But then it's like when they rejected, it's like, oh, he was my friend, but he rejected me. Like I have to like destroy his life now.

Speaker: So, I mean, at least we don't get that angle. Because he got rejected by Marilyn and he's like, well, time to do a whole bunch of other side tangents before I get back to Marilyn. He had to like earn his way to build that movie studio.

Speaker: The fake photo shoot and all the props. Again, where where did you get the money? ah she She must have been crazy rich. Whatever her crazy life insurance was. Like, was it like a billion to one odds of her falling down her own staircase from the insurance company?

Speaker: Yeah, she must have been like, like she said she was a dancer. Like she have been like the biggest dancer in like golden age of Hollywood or something. she secretly Marilyn Monroe? Or like a or like ah like a Ginger Rogers. She was like oh i was as big as Ginger Rogers. Yeah, because i mean it's also pretty expensive to install an elevator in your own home.

Speaker: That was the weird stand-at where, oh, maybe it's like, is this going to take place in an apartment? It's like, no, that's a residential elevator. That's not cheap to have like in that kind of zoning. ah So she had money, but she was also handing him $10 at a time, which I get it. I mean, he's he's not good with money. Yeah.

Speaker: Um, but like, yeah, we couldn't, like I'm like, yeah, you're right. Like he's not getting more money from his like job. And then he's able to like afford this like studio and equipment and guns and cars.

Speaker: I wish you guys see like him going to like buy the gun, talking to James Cagney. I need a Tommy gun, see? like Normally, we would have a two-week waiting period, but you put on a great Cagney. Here's some live ammunition and ever-perfect Tommy gun.

Speaker: I see. you're you're acting You're acting like James Cagney, like you're like dressed like a gangster. I see no red flags about this. Sure, here's Tommy Gun. You need some ammo?

Speaker: I would have liked one scene where like maybe he like rebuilt the Tommy Gun replica or something. He had a replica and he just found the right parts to like swap it out to make it an actual real gun or something. it what um like What if he worked in like a prop studio? Well, that'd be better. That'd make a whole bunch of sense. And then he's stealing all the props to like kill people with. Yeah, it's like he's a famous prop from different movies and he just... you know like it's more...

Speaker: It's easier to get the costume than it is to get the prop almost all the time. So if he has like a movie replica or like a deadly version of it, that have been cool to see a movie that.

Speaker: Is that a lightsaber? Yeah, we actually made one, but it was expensive. Or just it's just an extendable blade now. A razor blade just stabs into someone. yeah Or um you know he puts on the vampire teeth, but instead of it being like fake. It's actually like real metal. so It's like piercing, so it's like actually deadly than you think.

Speaker: and then ah yeah like There's a whole different version of this movie out there that could be pieced together. You gotta get a whole bunch of licensing, cause I still don't understand how this movie has all those movie licensings to be grounded.

Speaker: Well, of the Living Dead was public domain, so they didn't pay for that footage. And the other movies were probably pretty cheap just because it was like, you know, 70 years, like 60 years old or 40 years old, however long it's been. And then Halloween, though?

Speaker: Well, that we didn't hear it. We only heard it. so That's still the usage, I guess. or I don't know. and the And the poster was in the back. of the bus Maybe there was like something where like they were like friends with like John Carpenter or something. Maybe. just All right.

Speaker: I won't sue you. You can use that as a reference. He's like, yeah, that's fine. Even if this movie didn't do amazing, to me I think it did okay, but like even if this movie didn't do amazing, usually when you see a popular product in another movie, you get more excited and want to see that movie.

Speaker: ah

Speaker: It's like any time a movie references Back to the Future, it's like i sometimes you're like I would rather watch Back to the Future right now if the movie isn't good. Current movie.

Speaker: Well, guess they did they get... The Hopalong Can't See stuff they did get sued for. Because i guess they didn't get like the proper usage or like authorize those. But everything else was like everything else asked the they got the lenses for.

Speaker: Wow. Of all the the movies that were featured in this. Mm-hmm.

Speaker: But yeah. And also, and but also they like apparently like they didn't, like they betrayed Hobo-Long Cassidy in like a negative light because like he killed killed like a random guy. so Yeah, i mean, he was like the, wasn't he need the good guy in that movie?

Speaker: Oh, yeah. And then he became like the bad guy, so I could see why it's like, that's weird. Especially if it's your first time watching that, and you're like, I don't think that's what it should be. Killing a man in cold blood. And then sort of walking around like a robot, like, bye-bye!

Speaker: Yeah.

Speaker: But ah yeah, overall, it was it was it was a fun watch. It was a fun, weird 80s movie. Yeah, especially sort of something different in the and the Halloween season, but still being relatable to us for being like movie guys. This is like not bad. I bet you no one else is talking about this movie for Halloween.

Speaker: hmm. But yeah, i mean, I'm glad I saw it. It's one those like, it's been in back in my mind, especially with the new Clayface movie coming out where it's like someone in the the industry is like freaking out and becoming a serial killer.

Speaker: But this time around, though, it's like like very little rhyme and reason. Just sort of like you, you piss me off. You, you owe me $40. Yeah.

Speaker: man If they remade it today, it would movies 1986 early 80s. 80s killers? Someone dressed like Marty McFly, basically. ye Because it can't be a conventional like killer. it has to be something hipster-like, where it's like, oh, everyone thinks horror is like a Jason or or or Michael Myers. In fact, true horror is Marty McFly. He's the real villain. He messed around with a whole timeline. like That's a hipster villain kind of thing I would hear. I'd just be like, Jesus Christ. You know? if someone said that to me or just or just like like like oscar winning movies from like the 80s like kramer versus kramer someone's like dress like yeah just like are you dustin hoffman he's like this movie defined the whole 80s and it's a horror movie because like you know parents getting divorced is hard like okay i guess like

Speaker: Like I said, if you were to do it, you would have to secure all these rights in order to make it make sense. okay Which, I don't know. I don't know what the the how much it would cost us to reference Kramer vs. Kramer in another movie.

Speaker: But yeah, so I think that'll wrap things up for this month's commentary. We'll be back next month with another one.
