Torben Rothgeb: Hello, Tiny Car listeners. Well, summer is almost over. But the Tiny Car Podcast is only beginning. And boy, what a show. do we We have nothing but content coming at you. We have ah brought in our special expert, John Zweber. Welcome, John. Thank you. The Oracle. Cameron?
Torben Rothgeb: And of course. The one and only Slim Jim Campman. i Thank you. thank you all right well how's everybody doing good good good well we have a wonderful show Well, and we have Sparky with us, too. Yes. Hopefully nobody gets knocked over. yeah I can't wait. very
Torben Rothgeb: Well, we are just back from the IPMS Nationals, so we're going to do a full rundown of everything from judging to what was on the tables, visiting with vendors and new releases, getting to see them in person.
Torben Rothgeb: I also visited a bunch of museums while we were in beautiful Fort Wayne, Indiana. Yeah. um Home of the, was it Jefferson Avenue Speedway that went yes went outside convention center? A lot of ah speeders going by. Luckily we were able to cross the road a number of times without getting ran over.
Torben Rothgeb: Run now! And then we have Minnesota's very own Pantowners show. 51st annual.
Torben Rothgeb: 51st Annual. Did they have anything about Dick Butkus, number 51? No. Chicago Bears middle linebacker? Well, he's no longer with us, Craig. Okay. How about Rowdy Burns? He drove the 51 Exide. I'm familiar with Rowdy Burns from that wonderful movie. Yes. And they're making another one of those. Allegedly. Great. We're going to talk about the history of the road course. with the ah There's a cough button over here if you want to it's trying more put your hand over your mouth. yeah Anyway. um
Torben Rothgeb: We have a history of the road course with the, what was it, the USA 250 or two? fifty were two ah to Freedom 250. Freedom 250. And the Iraq race, which was a barn burner. Jeff Gordon won that one, came out of retirement. They had two races and he won. Well, they kind of all had to come out and retire. Yes. Yeah. There was only 10 drivers and they were all... Retired. oh again
Torben Rothgeb: Usually they have celebrity type people sometimes. Did they have any like actors or musicians or anything? Well, no, because they only had 10 cars. I mean, you you want to pick. race drivers that can actually drive.
Torben Rothgeb: I mean some of those could be. challenged but anyway yeah And we're going to be going over some of the new releases because, again, at the Nationals, we had a chance to visit. ah Who was the guy from round two that's always in the YouTube videos?
Torben Rothgeb: um I don't remember his name. I know, I know. We should have gotten his name, but he did. No, no, no. This is the guy that drives the car up to the to the door. and pretty A young guy. Younger guy. Yes, especially in our hobby. Yeah, in our hobby, he's probably 49.
Torben Rothgeb: yeah Yeah. And he was just getting married or something too or something. So you might know his name then. No. Anyway. It's good to know I'm not the only person that's bad at getting people's names. But Aaron Skinner was there, and he's he's kind of the oracle of model you know model building. so Yes, yeah.
Torben Rothgeb: yeah and we were able to talk to round two and look at a ton of really cool new releases And I actually bought a Camaro Pro Street one, which is exactly like the new Camaro that they're releasing.
Torben Rothgeb: And then we have the question of the month. We're going to find out how competitive Our ah podcast, Tiny Car Podcast. ah panel is see how when when they sit down at the workbench are they thinking about bringing home trophies are they just building for enjoyment and the love of the hobby so they're going to rate themselves on uh between one and ten for the rubric
Torben Rothgeb: um Then we are going to discuss what we each have on the bench. I know Nordicon is about of a five weeks away. Maybe four. one like yeah Anything that we're trying to get done for Nordicon.
Torben Rothgeb: or anything to get done in in general.
Torben Rothgeb: And ah then with Labor Day coming up, which is my least favorite. holiday. Well, one reason I'm a teacher, so it's the end of the summer. I have to go back to work. yeah I have to set the alarm clock. yeah I have to deal with. ah hundreds of unruly children on a daily basis. There's cocktails for that. I've got the tiny violin right here. Well, I've always said education would be much better if teachers were allowed one just one beer at lunchtime. Not going to overdo it with a beer bong and just slamming them or shotgunning them, but just one nice of beer. ball
Torben Rothgeb: um it's like But a beer is like Lay's potato chips. You can't have just one. And at one point, you know you watch some of these movies in the 60s and 70s. I've been watching Kojak lately. It's one of my favorite shows. a class and And there's a bunch of people at their job you know having a cocktail. It's the first question they ask. When Kojak shows up to to question them, can I get you a drink? And they're sitting there, they're at their jobs drinking, you know, but then unfortunately I think too many.
Torben Rothgeb: Too many alcoholics ruined it for everybody. Darn it. You know can't even, you know, have a cocktail on the road. This is more like a rabbit bowl now. It's not coming back. Anyway, back to holidays. yeah Yes. So yeah Labor Day has always been my least favorite holiday. I love summer. So it's the end of summer.
Torben Rothgeb: And so we're going to find out who, what everybody's. favorite holidays are and if they have one they do not like or they put in the overrated category All right. So.
Torben Rothgeb: Back to the IPMS Nationals. Why don't we start with the Bob? what was What was your take? on ah the whole experience. unfortunately It was great. I think i if they had it there again, I would go.
Torben Rothgeb: It was a fairly long drive, but... The facility was A1. How many hour drives is it? 10. We stopped to eat. stopped to eat. so yeah we have to eat But with your driving. No, I was good. He was good. What does that mean? I didn't bring my radar. I didn't go over 79.
Torben Rothgeb: He did not. He was actually good. So the the facility was very, very good. The vendor rooms were plenty, were filled, and they were full. They were plentiful.
Torben Rothgeb: Um, the The city was a nice place to be in. it was I always felt safe. There was good food as opposed to other places we've been. The food good. That is not a shot at Lincoln, Nebraska. and anybodys for me and mean and there was it was The food was good. the Everything about it, I have really...
Torben Rothgeb: I don't have any real... How were the cookies, by the way? The cookies? They were fine. Yeah, for the contest. Oh, yeah. Before they run out. They did run out. I mean, it was human nature that people would take too much. But, you know, that was, yes. That was really funny because they told us to eat before they... Judge it.
Torben Rothgeb: Before we got there. So we made sure to eat. But then they said they had some snacks and the snacks came down to these cookies. um But I think they were.
Torben Rothgeb: they I think they were assuming that everybody was going to be a decent human being and take one cookie. Well, remember, if you were at Madison, that's what they had there as well. But they didn't run out. Yes. And I witnessed myself, the guy at the front of the line, this old man, stuffs three cookies in his pocket. And I didn't think much of it. I thought it was a little odd. But then by the time that...
Torben Rothgeb: Both ah Cameron and Bob came out. They were out of cookies. And Cameron being the generous man. he had a little bag of cookies he offered me a small quarter -sized cookie and i was I was happy to get that, you know. But it was a very positive experience for me.
Torben Rothgeb: It was fine. Yes, yes. ah Well, the vending blew me away. The only other nationals I went to was Madison, and there really was not much. No. uh for cars if you're a car builder anything with madison um so i was very ah pleasantly surprised John, what was your take? You've been to how many nationals now?
Torben Rothgeb: four i think okay Madison was the last one. Aha. This just blew right by Madison. This was outstanding. They were so organized. My God. in Madison.
Torben Rothgeb: It was 11 o 'clock before they finished giving out the awards. We were done at nine? Night is 7 .30 to 9 .30 on the dot. Yeah. That's pretty typical for a national zoo. Well, they changed it. They're doing slides, so you've got 10 seconds to look at each slide. Yeah, my favorite thing about the awards ceremony, and this is, you know, when when you have the shows that have everything, whether it's, ah you know, we have the armor and the figures.
Torben Rothgeb: it's you're just goingnna You have a lot of awards, so it's going to take a while. It's kind of like a graduation at a school where they have a lot of kids. But um they did it differently this time. They packed us into this old movie theater that was next door to the convention center. And rather than have an emcee, yes, they did have drinks. How did you know that? mines know Well, and yeah it was funny. They wouldn't give me a Long Island iced tea because that has four pours, technically. And you can only get two drinks. Is this Rothkopf? No, no, no. We heard about him in Milwaukee. I was tempted to say, well, just give them give me two pours on it. Surprise me with what you're going to do, with which which shots you're going to put in there or not. but But anyway, so they only gave me two pours.
Torben Rothgeb: no they didn't so i just went with a beer on that one But, no, they did not they did not have an emcee, so they just did a slideshow, and it was really cool.
Torben Rothgeb: But yeah, Sparky, come on. ah Say goodbye arm. Sorry. Bye arm. Our dog has created a lot of problems during the podcast. It might be her last podcast with us. One thing I got to got to mention now that we're talking about the awards is.
Torben Rothgeb: They announced that the hostess announced right up front that the slideshow. was each picture was going to last six seconds. That was easy. Yes.
Torben Rothgeb: That's what it needed to be to fall in. Two hours. into the two hours so well they said it was actually an hour and 20 minutes while the that's fantastic and the really outstanding really smart thing that they did was They had the names of the category of the bit model builder. the name of the model
Torben Rothgeb: Yeah. And it was all printed there. included on each slide, so it's up to each attendee to read the slides.
Torben Rothgeb: best they could. They didn't have to try to. pronounce any names. That's true. it was There was no read no no talking during the slideshow. It was just right through with music in the background. You read it and it just sailed through. If they had tried to read.
Torben Rothgeb: Oh, my God. It would have taken forever. It would have taken a long time. But they used to, though. They used to. This was a brilliant movie. This is the first time. Hopefully something that they do in coming shows. And they had one mistake, and, of course, people immediately yelled. that's not a wildcat it was one mistake in all of the sides give it a break okay you know i think jim drew took all the photos Yeah, he was up like 2 a .m. Yeah, he was up. Well, I remember you, Bob, because there was a ship that you entered and there was a.
Torben Rothgeb: It's a ship. No, it's a boat. It was really, I have one regret and Cameron. was savvy enough to to say that I agree with him. I didn't spend concentrated enough time. I didn't spend time going through all the models. Which you usually do. which I usually try to, but it's like, it was like the vendor rooms, there's three vendors and they were packed with stuff. right and then we went to
Torben Rothgeb: So we started the museums. Yeah. That was fabulous. Yeah. No, it was truly, you know, you say, you know, people say, well, you could spend a whole week there. You can spend. And really, I could have spent another two days there. Yeah. You know. see But but ah you made it to Fort Wayne.
Torben Rothgeb: Yeah. At least next time. I go to. any nationals. I'm going to try to vote. One day.
Torben Rothgeb: on the on the contest. you know if if i get through the contest models. and have extra time to spend in the vendor rooms. Except if I call you and say, Cameron, there's a Silver Cities model in this room. But you're saying you you want to look at them but on Wednesday?
Torben Rothgeb: it It doesn't have to be Wednesday, Thursday, whatever. but well But the reason why I was bringing this up is that Wednesday is not the end of people entering. so yeah i mean long shot There's a lot of people that come in later because they have jobs and they're from far away. like you know um overseas and that kind of thing. Saturday morning would be the best thing is to have your coffee, have your breakfast and go in there and just spend the morning working outside. Especially if you're judging. Right, exactly. But we went to
Torben Rothgeb: The Indy Museum. and saturday morning Well, let's not get ahead of ourselves. we First, we did the the Auburn Museum. Oh, that's right. The Auburn Museum. and ah that That was incredible because at first you go into it and it's like just the the dealership is intact. It's the original dealership. so And they even shot a movie there because it is so authentic of what a dealership would look like in the 30s.
Torben Rothgeb: And they have all these wonderful old automobiles, which... i've never I built the 35 Mercedes a long time ago because somebody gave it to me, but it's not really my main thing of interest.
Torben Rothgeb: but it's one of those things in person they were so cool really cool and authentic.
Torben Rothgeb: and then though you get and then they have the museum in the back and my goodness that ah you know, as a NASCAR fan, they had better NASCARs there. a lot better than the museum of speed because they had two david pearson uh cars yeah um they had the 64 dodge and the 66 dodge um then they had a benny parsons uh talladega um and then they you know they had a lot of uh a lot of modern cars there yep It was great. It was packed. It was door to door down there. There are a lot of spectators.
Torben Rothgeb: Um, not at the museum at the court museum not the court museum so you kind of had the whole place to yourself yeah well your buddy cal wood was there so you guys got to reconnect buddy and soon And his lady.
Torben Rothgeb: I mean, there were things like a 421 Pontiac, the 61, 421. It's like I've never seen one of those. It was fantastic. you know And Hudson's, like Hudson after Hudson after Hudson. was that Right. Oh my god!
Torben Rothgeb: yeah it was fantastic they painted green No. No, but they had like the first hemikuda there. Yep. That was really cool. Are you sure about that? did Did the Hallidays okay it? I don't know. We have not gotten approval from the from those guys. but um They had a surprise for me. They had the Rolling Stone Cuda um funny car. Which was really cool.
Torben Rothgeb: Um, They had some pace cars. They had the 72 Cutlass. ah Again, so they had another one at the Museum of Speed. Yep, they had a 68 Shelby Cobra. They had the – what is that big traveling GMC thing that took a bunch of – Futureliner. Those things are monster. I can't imagine driving those back in the day. Right.
Torben Rothgeb: Lot of good muscle cars. ah They had a... yeah ah Yanko Camaro, Hugger Orange, really cool. Um, Then they had a 68 Charger and the Cuda. That was the original Hemi Cuda. If I knew they were going to have stuff like that, I would have gone.
Torben Rothgeb: they had the 71 pace car um so they had 71 pace car uh now the holidays would have told me and i would have told them they had the wrong wheels on because they had regular uh magnum or those magnum rims uh yeah but they i mean the one had like aluminum slot type of things on the real car The actual natural car that crashed, those were... I believe there.
Torben Rothgeb: motor wheels, I think. Okay. The ones that Steve Hansen made for Toby. And those were... um Pretty much. on a you know unobtainium there's really they really don't exist there's not many around i think they're magnesium or something uh -huh so um they're kind of one of a kind you know so if you got your typical convertible pace car Yes. ah you know challenger probably wouldn't have those wheels in it
Torben Rothgeb: Yeah. i so Well, and then ah who was the guy he went into airplanes to? Who was the main guy and between ah behind Auburn, the business guy? um You know, there's chord.
Torben Rothgeb: Auburn. Yeah, Cord was his name, I think. Cord was his name. There were quite a few great chords, the L -29, the big limousine chord. Lots of the retractable headlight chords are like seven or eight. I love those. I'm like, holy crap. Chuck McCord. they had an original checker uh taxi nice those those original one that was really cool it was yellow
Torben Rothgeb: yeah Yes, brilliant. really those that are So no, I would totally recommend ah the the Auburn Chord Museum. That was really cool. Oh, they had an Essex Cobra there too.
Torben Rothgeb: um really cool so great place a lot of trucks they had a whole room downstairs of trucks tractors stuff like that. They had the truck that model or round two is coming out with. Oh, the Mack truck? They had the Mack there. This is 62 or whatever? Yeah, it was really cool.
Torben Rothgeb: Lots of great stuff there. Yeah. And then, ah so then. We had, ah I know I had, it was the first time I had judged at the Nationals.
Torben Rothgeb: And so it was ah definitely eye opening. um in Pros and cons, I thought. It was it was really neat ah to... Uh, C.
Torben Rothgeb: They had their judging presentation. You know, and they they talked about things you would probably guess that they would have, ah you know, focus on construction, painting, finish finishes, weathering. Um,
Torben Rothgeb: They talked about being positive, not you know not obviously not being negative. or ah critical of things. What was Jim Grew's statement about? Yeah, we got a chance to visit with Jim Grew. Judge to punish. yes Judge to punish. We need a button for that. I'll have this big.
Torben Rothgeb: And you send him a few. I found it very interesting, like with the classes that I judged. And one was, I think it was like factory stock.
Torben Rothgeb: 1960 or newer. And so... ah Some of the cars that were in it were like there was this like a 69 Camaro that was done really well. They opened up the doors, opened up the trunk.
Torben Rothgeb: Um, But then ah the the liner inside the door was a little clunky looking. and um Then if I compare that, and this did not place in the top three, to the car that won.
Torben Rothgeb: It was a GT40, a new GT40 with kind of a snap kit. Snap kit. Great paint job, phenomenal paint job. And they had done some photo etch on the screens.
Torben Rothgeb: I did some ah carbon fiber decals. um but all in all if you're a great painter um it probably about a 30 -hour project right um whereas the guy to open up this uh the doors and the trunk on this camaro and it was done well it wasn't like a glue bomb or anything like that um Then ah probably put a hundred hours into it
Torben Rothgeb: The interesting thing that when I look at the IPMS judging, I think about like judging in the Olympics where they do ice skating. If a guy you know really puts it on the line and does a quadruple axle.
Torben Rothgeb: right they'll give him bonus points same with diving if he does a really tough dive they'll give him more points and then even if he doesn't completely stick it having more points will be ah enough maybe to win a gold medal. The degree of difficulty is yes actually a judge yeah judging
Torben Rothgeb: is factored in start it you start with that right you know so like if you are going to build a snap kit you your ceiling might be a 70 and if you're doing something where you're opening everything up and doing it you're you would start at a 110 and then go back from there yeah so i do find it interesting and uh you know it probably For this type of show, you're you're better off not doing some of the getting really into the weeds with some of the stuff. Well, I was. I was rather pissed there was a 9 -11. Portia Carrera. And it was open doors, open hood, open.
Torben Rothgeb: everything was oh yeah that's why and it was really phenomenal Incredible build. and I think they gave it third place. And one of his first place was. It was a nice paint job, but it was... it was Totally box stock, nothing, not even. The guy who was one of the judges that judged that.
Torben Rothgeb: I said, well, you know, what was the deal? He says, well, here, let me take my light. And you had to have a pen light. You could not use your phone. So yes he shines it down the windshield and I'm looking. I don't see what you're talking about. well here so the doors open on the passenger side and if you shine the light way in where the hinges it wasn't totally covered. And I'm thinking,
Torben Rothgeb: You gotta to be kidding me. yeah If you're getting that picky. you know But they are. They're looking for a mistake. Well, it's like Torben said. what's i Well, I guess you could call it a mistake. How do you cover that? Well, no, but I mean, just from my judging experience in the shows that I've... Gone too.
Torben Rothgeb: while was Madison. This guy found a flaw in this Ferrari that was the doors were opened. And he found that the exhaust pipe didn't quite connect. to the muffler.
Torben Rothgeb: And he called it out in front of everybody, all the judges. And they were going to give him less of an award because of this plot. Well, it's like Torben said. I'm better off than not opening the doors. Right, yeah exactly. so yeah Because then you wouldn't see it. No.
Torben Rothgeb: Porsche 911, Nick. you were talking about, John. i I was in the team that judged that. that particular yeah category. Thank you. Thank you. Are you going outside now? uh biggest All right.
Torben Rothgeb: Criticism. that that other that some of the judges found in that. including uh the Uh... what What did they call it? Not the head judge, but it was like the corrector. He can he came but in at the end. That's right. That's what I did. And basically said.
Torben Rothgeb: Yes, we'll go with your judging team. Why did you do this? Right, right. that was in the sills. um the open doors, there was...
Torben Rothgeb: uh, uh, where two parts came together in the sill. and there was a little bit of a gap and and you could tell because it was on both sides that it was how the the kit parts were made sure it wasn't the builder did something wrong and and didn't fit them together it was There was.
Torben Rothgeb: uh, uh, adapt. there where there shouldn't have been. Okay. does that really negate everything else that's so so good on this model? But nope.
Torben Rothgeb: focus on, it's got that. that gap on in the door sill and when you look went on and looked at all the cars and i judged four or five categories. And it was.
Torben Rothgeb: It was eye -opening too. because you just had people picking on the smallest things, like a really nice. Mercedes 154 that the guy was looking at with the flashlight. There's a tiny crack in the decal. Oh, for God sakes.
Torben Rothgeb: When did they start using them? The pen lights? They've been doing the pen lights for years. But I mean, it's not something you had to use. No. No, but everyone's got one. oh oh yeah not Except us. One thing I did like at the... um The judge's meeting was the guy did say not to use the phone.
Torben Rothgeb: because evidently people take a picture with the phone and then they enlarge it oh and what he said is he wanted it to just be by the naked eye yeah by vacili accident and the pen light kind of negates that. yeah yeah yeah for sure Well, how many other people just viewing the models are going to whip out their pen light?
Torben Rothgeb: And it leaves it up to chance because if we would have been on the same team, none of us brought a pen light. So that would have been unfair for the groups we judged. Oh, you brought one? Yeah. Okay, but but it relied on somebody in your group having a pen light. Right. um So, and no, it it was interesting. i i think
Torben Rothgeb: it It makes it concrete then, I guess, that it is, if you have a fault, you at least have, when the person comes up to you and says, Why didn't I win first place? You have a concrete thing to say.
Torben Rothgeb: And so it... It's probably their way of taking the subjectiveness out of it. The guy with the Porsche, I talked to him afterwards, and he was happy to get third. Yeah. I mean, he was happy with it. No. um And but, you know, it would be ah concrete, too, if if somebody said put in a lot more work to do stuff. But they they don't judge it that way, which is, you know.
Torben Rothgeb: Like I said, for better or for worse. Because all of us know that whenever you look at any model. It's got to jump off the table at you. Right. It's got to jump. you know Like that. and Yeah, it's got to jump off the table. and The first thing that... any Any viewer, including judges, are going to see is that paint job. if your paint if your paint job isn't spectacular flawless as good as you can possibly make it
Torben Rothgeb: all the other detail that you've at scratch built and everything is going to mean next to nothing. I yeah un told the little group I was in, I said, okay, I'll get it over. I'm a paint Nazi. so Yes. Well, and you know the way they judged to punish, for me, it was eye -opening. it brings me back to a story that the guy that ah was my ah master's thesis head person.
Torben Rothgeb: ah said told me a story about when he was doing his master's. And he turned it in to the professor, and the professor looked him in his eye and said, is this the best you can do? And he thought for a second. like Okay, we'll get back to it. And then he turns in and a week later.
Torben Rothgeb: And the presser. Looks him in the eye again.
Torben Rothgeb: Are you sure this is the best you can do? he says All right, yeah he takes it back, spends another month on it. He finally turns it in and he he gives it to him. And then. a Week later, he gives it back to him. And he said, well, this is very good work. I'm going to approve you. And then he said, out of curiosity, ah you know, because I went back and I fixed this and fixed that. Do you think I should have fixed these things on the first time?
Torben Rothgeb: I don't know. I only read it once, you know, but, but, and you know, when you're building for one of these shows, you you need to do, is this the best I can do? It's where like break out the pen light and, you know, cause they're going to find it. It's cleanliness and paint. There was two.
Torben Rothgeb: two um salvino's mclaren pedo award cars both opened up built because you don't they don't go together but i mean you know you have you have and so but one of them was It was it was lots of wires on it and it it it looked kind of random. You know, it was just kind of like, I'm not an expert on it, but it just looked.
Torben Rothgeb: For lack of a better word, it looked sloppy. The other one across the table was in the curbside. you know um could say no it was an out of the box competition And it was flawless.
Torben Rothgeb: but it was simple. clean and that's what they're looking for right you know so it's like And if you put just a little more work into it. you have. I mean, in the big scale category.
Torben Rothgeb: one of our friends got robbed i think and it was you know there was two model factory hero cars that were done Not great. You know, I mean, the paint wasn't very good. Right. They weren't, you know, and I was stunned that they got something. They did? Yeah, they did. That one of them got something, the alpha. It must have been third. It was third. Because I was in the middle. Somebody Hmm.
Torben Rothgeb: Oh, yeah. yeah looking well Looking at that model, I won't say what it was, but looking at it. Because I like that particular race car. and seeing it in 12 scale model factory here, a lot of detail. and um i was excited to see it and as i leaned across the table it was
Torben Rothgeb: yeah Exactly. Exactly. It was on the back of the table, so I had to lean lean across the table to see it. And it was like.
Torben Rothgeb: Oh my gosh. You're right. And they won. The opposite. of oh No, they didn't. Jim Drew won. He got first in that class. Oh, okay. And that's the same one Harold has done. Not Harold. Howard. Howard. Okay. well ah So the right person won. Oh, yeah. yeah which which didn't happen throughout the show though oh no i mean with him even yeah oh oh yeah yeah
Torben Rothgeb: Well, because he won first for his Mercedes too, right? Yes. that got first And it was going up against a really good Andy Caldwell. Beautiful, beautiful coyote. And we had to do we had to stand around.
Torben Rothgeb: and defend it and i went into terrier mode you know and i was just like you're not going to change me you're not going to sorry can we hear that uh i didn't drop the effenheimer every other word but it was like i don't believe this is this is the nicest because you guys had decided that drew's car was first and then he came in and he wanted to change it he and and it felt like he was lobbying
Torben Rothgeb: yeah for something else and it's like you didn't judge we judge this you know we went over all these so yeah go away yeah um as yeah again no names and i don't remember his name but the corrector the the judging judger, to approver. ah is the best way I can think of what he was there to do. Wasn't Andy there?
Torben Rothgeb: Andrew. Colbert? no. This is a head judge. He's a great guy, but he's very... But he was there, correct? Oh, yeah. and the nice oh yeah he's He says't she doesn't he grab anyone by the throat. yeah yeah right I don't know about wimp. You know wimp, but he doesn't grab me by the throat and go.
Torben Rothgeb: here's what you need to do right because i'm thinking if i was there
Torben Rothgeb: Yeah. stop And I think the head judge, unless it's something egregious. We won't live that long. Or if there's a conflict of interest, like the person is judging their own kid's car or something like that. Then it's not. Then you're not going to. You're not really going to change. I mean, it's up to the judges. You put the judges in charge. Whatever they pick, they pick. You know, unless it's, and they were two fantastic cars oh because that coyote was awesome. It was done with magnets and you could, it was, it was one of those few cars that was blown apart, but you could also put it together and and put it back together for me. i was like
Torben Rothgeb: and they were both That was stunning. it was beautiful And it was it was interesting listening to both of them talk, both Jim Drew and Andy were talking about it, and they both had started with pretty crude kits and rebuilt anything. So they both were observing as well. so but it' Absolutely. But that also says a lot about Jim Drew, though, because he doesn't have to come to these.
Torben Rothgeb: Right. Yeah. and He's been through the gamut. There's nothing to prove. her Yeah, there's nothing to prove. is a hell He's probably one of the best model builders. yeah period of all time yeah right and nothings getting no one's going to top that so well no i saw last night he said he was back to the bench he'd been in kind of a slump and he was building this porsche um I'll never remember what it is, but it's an Endurance Porsche, the one that looks like almost all of them, the 917.
Torben Rothgeb: those are not uh 9 -11 yes yep 9 -11 okay yeah the common car right yeah so he's back at the workbench well that's great things just to get back on the horse they basically In my mind, the the biggest lesson.
Torben Rothgeb: what especially with the judging is. Whatever you built, no matter how much work you put into it, how much detail. corrections, anything.
Torben Rothgeb: if If you're interested in, if you... if you What an award. The first thing you have to do is... uh look at your paint job as honestly and ah unbiasedly as possible. And if you can't say that it's flawless,
Torben Rothgeb: Be prepared to not win. Yeah, exactly. Very well said. No matter what else. Very well said. And that's what I've always said with the hobby. I, you know, build whatever you want. We go to different clubs. Some are more serious than others. And I have no problem with, you know, this is a hobby. If you're not having fun, you're not doing right. But then, you know, the only people that irritate me are then the people who complain about not winning. And it's like you can build at whatever competitive level you are. But let's not put something out there and expect to win when you don't. And you're going to the nationals. You're not going to. It's the pinnacle. It's the top of the top. This isn't a Hobby Town USA local contest. It's not? Just understand that when you go. And judging is all subjective. Yes, you're correct about the paint job, but there's so much subjectivity that goes into it. It's very difficult. I saw some airplanes that were incredible.
Torben Rothgeb: Didn't get a thing. It happens a lot. Yeah. yeah That didn't get anything. Because there's so many models. I know. 3 ,000 models on the floor.
Torben Rothgeb: a thousand upstairs in the Tiger meet It was just like, my God. It is. ah It is so interesting, too. Like the watching other people judge is is what I got a kick out of because it's like there's this one and the guy had weathered the engine room.
Torben Rothgeb: ah even. So it wasn't supposed to be pristine day one off the factory. um But the guy said there's overspray in the engine room. And I'm like,
Torben Rothgeb: Of all places to have overspray, I'm sure factory cars have come out with overspray in the engine room. And then the guy had weathered it anyway. So it's possible this... dumbass guy who owned the one -to -one car for going in the fantasy world had been a touch -up paint on the engine block and over sprayed it because it was like i said it wasn't day one factory shine um but it is really funny what some people will pick out and uh and decide you know but you know beauty's in the eye of the holder And that's this. us
Torben Rothgeb: subject to it. subjectiveness that Bob was talking about. People have especially the more experience with building. with models themselves in their particular field of interest is they've got a picture in their mind of what the model a model should look like and if it doesn't a cognitive
Torben Rothgeb: Cognitive dissonance just breaks in and throws them. It's not the way I picture it should be. So anything else? matters not at all stop using these big words yeah i know well i uh I felt really lucky to be judging with Andy Caldwell. I hope that I'm saying his name right. Yeah, you got it right. But, ah you know, because he did have a a wealth of knowledge on a lot of stuff, on all the muscle cars, but then he built that Coyote. Well modeler.
Torben Rothgeb: Well, by now he's had his knee operation because he was getting ah a knee. I felt bad for him. because And they gave an award for the tiger broom. So he got an award for the tiger room. um But I had a hard time getting up there and getting up the stairs because he was, I think, said he was having a knee replacement surgery a couple of days after the show. So. Hopefully it's all went well and he's healed up by now.
Torben Rothgeb: Back to the workbench. Maybe he's listening to the podcast. Yeah, well, I don't know. i We can help. We can help. I should really be better at promoting those. If I was really good, I'd be out there with T -shirts.
Torben Rothgeb: Talking it up. but I saw one show that was even doing a podcast. Did you see those guys? Yeah, that's the famous Mojo model. Marvel Mojo. And they had Steve Houston with them. yeah And you know they had they had they a bunch of different modelers. They brought in Jeff Hearn. You know, they were there, and there was two podcasts. There was another.
Torben Rothgeb: who had a podcast there too. So yeah, it's a big deal. thank you Yeah, and I got to say, I get to those things I don't want to screw around with the podcast, to be honest with you. I don't want to like – There's too many things to buy. Yes. As it was, we didn't see everything on the table. And then Saturday – Yes. Oh, Saturday we went to the Indy Museum. Oh.
Torben Rothgeb: Which was fantastic. yeah They had a special ah Jeff Gordon. exhibit. uh and they had all kinds of uh winners so it's like uh when we went to nebraska we saw with the 70 and 71 winners right from um fallon all virginia yeah senior alice hall And um and but in this continued because how many different winners did we see, Cameron? I would say at least.
Torben Rothgeb: 20 25 different winners. At least. There there were more most likely more. all kind there a pens ski There's a side Penske museum. yeah yeah that had some Indy cars and some stock cars.
Torben Rothgeb: it was It was very impressive. Right. It was very well done. It was very family friendly. It was a little small. I felt was i was like...
Torben Rothgeb: Because I remember the old one I went to, it was cars after roars after cars all packed in. This was much more. This is much more if I'm going to say this, it sounds bad.
Torben Rothgeb: This is for the more of the common Joe and Jane, I think. I think that's true. And I think it's true. Which, if you're based in a museum, you want to do, right? And it was a lot of people in there. Yeah. A lot of families.
Torben Rothgeb: um And the cars were were canted up and they were just like. it looked great i mean they were like up like this and it's kind of a taste of You know, Indy is what it is. It's variety. Yep.
Torben Rothgeb: you Because you can actually walk right up to the cars, right? You're right next to them. you know it's just like yeah
Torben Rothgeb: and We had to peel Cameron off a couple of times. It's justifiable, though. I mean, you know, it's a special place. It is a special place. They had the yellow one. What was the old yellow one? The Marmon Wasp. Marmon Wasp. They had the husky chocolate one that won with Erickson. Sparky. What was about the gray one?
Torben Rothgeb: That's Bill Vukovich, 53 -54 winner. Okay, 53 -54 winner. ah This one. AJ Ford, 67. That's an easy one. 67. That's the fourth time winner.
Torben Rothgeb: Okay, I'll start asking you on the next one.
Torben Rothgeb: Isn't that...
Torben Rothgeb: Gordon thrdon John Cox. seventy It's right down here. So, yes, they had all kinds of great winners there. Then, of course, the Gordon, I took a bunch of pictures there. They had the first Brickyard winner. Not you. But you were there. They had the Jurassic Park. No, I didn't go to the first one. I went to the third one. Yes. Unfortunately, as a Jeff Gordon fan and I had and, you know, anybody who remembers NASCAR of that era, he had success for a year or two and then everybody started booing him.
Torben Rothgeb: and it just on the cusp of that so here i am big jeff gordon fan and um i couldn't wait uh he starts on the pole right and then like lap one or two he hits the freaking wall And there's just as outright cheering, just complete cheering. oh Yeah. And then Gordon's car comes around and it's just.
Torben Rothgeb: pancaked on the side of it. But considering the number of times he won the race, he got his revenge. He got his revenge, yes. But I never saw his revenge. Now, luckily, and here's the ironic part. So I went to the 96 and 97 ones. Gordon didn't win.
Torben Rothgeb: um And I couldn't go in the 98 one because I was getting married that day. And, you know, Gordon wins on that one. But then on our honeymoon, we went to the Watkins Glen race, and he at least won that. So I got to see him win at Watkins Glen.
Torben Rothgeb: um But now, yeah, the Jurassic Park car, then they had the Star Wars one. Even though the cars were getting kind of ugly then, it was a The cool paint scheme for the Star Wars. Isn't he on the record for the most road course wins? He did. I think. Oh, that's right. SVG.
Torben Rothgeb: Might be beating him, I think. Oh, they also had the... um
Torben Rothgeb: Is it Dan Gurney winner? No, that's Mark Donahue. Mark Donahue. 1972. I don't know why I always get this mixed up because Gurney never won it, right? No. Mark Donahue. It's blue, so that's probably what's real. That's why we have the PO camera. Yes, that is a very, very cool car. It's a great car. And that leads us to the Freedom 250 because if you watch the race, they had a throwback scheme on that. Who drove this throwback scheme? Sparky wants to answer. Yes.
Torben Rothgeb: um Who won the what now? the Well, no, he ran a Sunoco. There's a Sunoco throwback scheme on the Freedom 250. That was Kiffin Simpson of the Ganassi team. okay and he was running pretty good for a while yeah he was you know um nobody could keep up with kirkwood
Torben Rothgeb: Kyle Kirkwood. And it it was the only pass. It was the first lap pass on Alex Pillow. And then after that, there was no more passing pretty much. It was just kind of a parade. People were trying to pass. and it wasn't just Wasn't the street course a mess?
Torben Rothgeb: it was a mess i mean no offense it was a pretty awful track to drive on look like yeah they They couldn't really do anything about it, though. No, I mean, this is something some people wanted. So, I mean, you know, um you know it was... There were a lot of people that went. There were a lot of people that went. And it was free, right? And it was free. because They had to have a lottery. Yeah, we had a lottery. Free, free, free. Everybody wants something for free. Right, exactly. yeah um So it was...
Torben Rothgeb: You know, it was, I watched it, it was a crutch fest. you know people would get to the airplane but you watched it though no i watched the highlights that's all i watch You know, they had extended highlights, 30 minutes.
Torben Rothgeb: Ten minutes. Okay, there we go. Was it Malukas that tried to pass and ran into the wall? And then Stingray Rob went right into him. One of his favorite. McLaughlin. McLaughlin tried to pass and ran into the wall. Yeah, and then you saw why there was no passing. yeah He looked like he was going to pass for a second and then had.
Torben Rothgeb: was way too fast to complete the turn. On a sting radio. I don't know. He crashed into David Maloukas. But Lucas hit the wall in that same place. And Stingray came around the corner too fast. And there's Lucas's car right into the side of Lucas's car.
Torben Rothgeb: ye and pull a lot of And a lot of it, just the nature of street courses. You couldn't avoid if somebody went off. or I mean, even the best driver there, Palola, had a horrible day. Yeah, he crashed his front spoiler. Did he sell the lead down on the points? He does. It's it's tightened up, though, that with a but handful of races. Kirkwood is close to him. So. Yeah, then that leads us to the history of road courses. ah Cameron, is this how long hour how long has road courses been around? I know NASCAR this year was the first year they went to San Diego.
Torben Rothgeb: um Take advantage of the patriotism on the 250th anniversary. They had a ah big thing with the it like. ah Air Force carrier, you know, and so they they they took advantage of San Diego road course. Right. And they'd done the Chicago road course a couple of years ago. So how long have they been doing road courses since the mid 60s? As far as I remember, the first.
Torben Rothgeb: IndyCar. road course was Indianapolis Raceway Park. and they've got a room. They had a world course there. um They even went to a road course. uh pikes near pikes peak in 1970 i think it was yeah um And now.
Torben Rothgeb: Starting in the... in the 80s. the push to... reach the people, get the races in.
Torben Rothgeb: higher population areas they had. They came up with the Meadowlands. course around the Meadowlands Stadium. Pretty successful one too. Yep. They did one in Dallas too, I think, right? They did one in Dallas. Very well.
Torben Rothgeb: Half a dozen years ago, they had. a street course. race in Baltimore. Talked about others. it It's...
Torben Rothgeb: there There's about about a third, at least a third of the races. The current seasons are. world course street course right so world course as opposed to mid -ohio
Torben Rothgeb: Laguna Seca, Road America. Natural world courses. Natural versus the street courses. Right, yeah. Now, Long Beach. That's a street course. But that's been around forever and it's very successful. That seems like it's the most popular one. And still running. I mean, that's a long time. Right.
Torben Rothgeb: Was that the 80s? 1975 was the first one for Formula 5000. Next for like six years.
Torben Rothgeb: They had Formula One. And then in the early 80s, they switched over to IndyCar just because it was. cheaper and they've been doing indycars ever since now is there more passing on the long beach track.
Torben Rothgeb: um There is because there is. uh that long Start finish straight. the curving street, but they've just been at it for so long.
Torben Rothgeb: Did you get to go to that at all? No Even though he lived out there and stuff? it They didn't start that until the the very first. Formula 5000 race weekend was... uh,
Torben Rothgeb: I graduated high school and moved to Minnesota. So Torben in NASCAR. they just had Riverside was the one they had for years. Riverside was the one they raised there. And then they went to Watkins Glen. Watkins Glen. I want to say, what is that, about 86, 87?
Torben Rothgeb: I know Tim – I think Tim Richman won there. So at least in the – By 87, 86, they did Watkins Glen. um And then um after Riverside left and they went to Sonoma Raceway. So for a long time, they just had two. road courses um but that is a serious point yeah and then um i think Uh, maybe. answer
Torben Rothgeb: Okay. before the car, the next gen car. Um.
Torben Rothgeb: It seemed to be more entertaining to do road courses, so they went on a stretch where they really increased the road courses. They went to a Circuit of America. Great. texas and then they even uh with the brickyard issues they did the road course at indianapolis and then they did the roble at charlotte the ironic thing is Then when they came with the next -gen car, the racing was actually better.
Torben Rothgeb: on these mile and a half that they were trying to You know, make it more interesting with road courses. And then the next gen car came out and the racing was a lot better at the mile and a half. But it's too late for some of the racetracks because they got rid of the California track um that was a mile and a half.
Torben Rothgeb: um I don't know why they try to put the the real estate value gets to be too expensive and then people sell the track. I mean, that's what happened with the Ontario racetrack that was supposed to be the. indie track of the west yeah and then with that last one that they built by l la yeah
Torben Rothgeb: um They ended up selling that off as well. So that's gone. Yes, I believe. Gradually, they had said they'd left the track, but they'd sold the property where the bleachers were. And then I think now most of it is sold. It's it's pretty much gone. And the Chicago one, they did go back to Chicago, the Joliet Speedway. um you know and Yeah, and I got to say, yesterday I watched both races, and this will surprise nobody, but the NASCAR race was much more. up ah
Torben Rothgeb: Interesting. with the Loudon, New Hampshire track. and It was one of those where the the second and third place cards was really gaining at the end and almost caught Ryan.
Torben Rothgeb: Ryan number Blaney. Yeah, Ryan Blaney won. So the Forts are coming on. number Get those kids out there. there Yes. yeah Well, and speaking of that, they are doing they are doing the Ryan Blaney. He did a throwback scheme for Ryan Newman.
Torben Rothgeb: It was a number 12 car. That's one more car that Salvino's is doing. And then they're also doing the Joey Logano Shell car that won last week. So two more Fords for that.
Torben Rothgeb: Although... ah This person has ordered ah both the Castro Ford and the PP and &G Ford and received neither of them. So I will put that warning out there just because you ordered on Salvino's. Hopefully you're not waiting to build it in a week. cause ah They do take time. But it is free shipping, though.
Torben Rothgeb: It is if you're in the club, like many things in life. If you're paying $50 a month, you get free shipping. Why not? What a deal. What a deal. Let's buy two.
Torben Rothgeb: But help is help help is on the way. Yeah. Well, if you have Prime, too, that's free shipping. yeah so But help is on the way for Salvinos because Jim Rogers is coming out there. For anybody who's ordered a Lotus, he's coming out to help get the Lotus. And it's really funny to watch them go back and forth because they're super positive. and like rick Rick is super positive. He's like, yeah, Jim's coming out there, and anybody that's got a Lotus, we're going to get them out there for in a week and a half. And Jim is like.
Torben Rothgeb: We're going to try. so But three of us out of the five have. waiting for one yes so absolutely so and hopefully uh
Torben Rothgeb: Hopefully we ordered on the we're on the front end of the list because I don't know. Cameron ordered a long time ago. Jim Rogers doesn't look like he's in super good shape, so I don't know. After the first 20, if he's going to get any done. If he's in better shape than Rick, though. rick now yeah Rick's knee. Boy, I tell you, if there's a surgery I want to avoid, it's a knee transplant. Because I have seen a lot of people. well We had Scott in our club.
Torben Rothgeb: um who We'll see. Harvey. Oh, Harvey. Harvey. Scott Harvey. I had an agent and he had a lot of trouble with that all the time. And so it's one thing to do surgery, but then it's another thing when it's like a 30 % chance of being better. Successful. yeah So I don't know. but Hopefully Rick will be ah back on his feet pretty soon and the Lotuses will get out along with the Fords.
Torben Rothgeb: Um... yeah other than that oh they did they are gonna do uh a pretty nice deal with Salvinos. If you want to, if you have a lot of hope, and faith. ah You want to order? They're doing the PP &G Joseph Newgarden, I think, that comes with the road course thing for an extra $10. You get decals.
Torben Rothgeb: And the wing ah to build the road course PP &G. It's kind of a blue one. it's what kind of It's a pretty car. It's a very pretty car. So. um they're They're coming out with that. I don't know if they're going to do any more with the road course wings.
Torben Rothgeb: Um, well, yes, uh, they're new. Uh, they do have Malukas's, um, the SADA one. Those have been on there for a while, though. yeah Because that's their focus now is IndyCars. And the Palooza.
Torben Rothgeb: yeah yeah well and they got it because i think was it next year they're coming out the new indycar body Bye. Not next year. It's the year after 2028. oh 2020 they're already testing the the the new generation.
Torben Rothgeb: Hopefully they'll be around then. Yes, I hope so. And they did say they're not going to modify the tool. They're going to keep the tool they have now and do a whole new tool.
Torben Rothgeb: For the 2028 car, because they say they always want to be able to, you know, apparently Rick was saying they have with this body, they have like 10 Indy 500 winners. So they want to be able to always do those. So they're not going to update. if yeah like something sound yeah And if they just ah make this slight changes to back. updated.
Torben Rothgeb: to before the That arrow screen. They have. years. worth of of cars that they could do yeah yeah um Yeah, I know Al, who's a vendor who sold a lot of Salpinos.
Torben Rothgeb: His theory is that they should have never done indie things. I think that's one of the better things they've done is the indie cars. And they seem to be selling them. Yeah. what One of the things and. Torben, you could probably...
Torben Rothgeb: Explain. Why? but uh My understanding is that they've Salvinos have kind of put the kibosh on people doing aftermarket. decals for the IndyCar kits. Really? Yeah. uh Indycals said that...
Torben Rothgeb: that they're not helpful at all. They aren't? Well, that's interesting. I know on the show, Rick has pointed people in the direction of IndyCals for... The Ferrucci car, maybe? No, it's not. The husky chocolate one. The husky chocolate one. Because he has mentioned that. that that has They'll never have the yeah approval to do that one, but to call Mike at IndyCals. Well, they were talking about doing that, though, I thought.
Torben Rothgeb: Because it's not that long ago. it' eric They were talking about it. Yeah, because he won in, what was it, 2022? Yeah, but i mean for some reason it says they're not going to be able to do that one. And then he also said.
Torben Rothgeb: uh for this felix rosenquist one they're never going to get the decal for his country singer i think or Morgan Wallen. that's what morgan said There's a Morgan wall. You can count. decal on the car but then again he said he also said We'll get the kit out one way or the other. And if you want to get that decal, look at...
Torben Rothgeb: at Indie Decals. So they have at least said it on the show. Now, I guess you're saying that they're not helpful for providing... That's that's what I've heard. Okay.
Torben Rothgeb: Interesting. um I bought earlier this year. Uh... aftermarket decals from Dave's decals. um Is it Dave's or mike pyki Mike's? Mike's. Mike's. for uh Santino Ferrucci's American flag car.
Torben Rothgeb: of two years ago. Yeah. but other than one slight yoke. few ones like that they're just not out there and and considering It's a spec series. All the cars are the same. You've got a whole field.
Torben Rothgeb: and a whole season and years of cars that you could do. Cars yeah that should be buildable if there's decals for them. Well, you would think they would be very supportive to that because the more they're the only game in town. or So people so buy decals, they're going to buy a kit from them. I don't think they really care, to be honest. That's just my opinion. i think that IndieCals will do stuff eventually.
Torben Rothgeb: whether somebody cares or not because he's ah he's into it. you know that ta I mean, it's it's it's his that's his bread and butter. I mean, it's always been his thing. That's how he started. yeah So I'm sure he's going to do as much as he wants to do, and people will buy it. Right. Yeah.
Torben Rothgeb: yeah Like... Like me. Right. I mean, it's it's there. well I mean, it's not expensive. Right. Doesn't take up a lot of room. I've only bought two of the... the Salvinos IndyCar kit. Right, but there's more kits coming. And there's more. And you just buy a generic, it's basically a generic kit. Right. Right. you just have to buy the right one
Torben Rothgeb: yeah Yeah, and you're all set. Although I think they do, because I almost glued the engine on wrong on the one I was doing last. was um They give you both the Chevy and the Honda engine. Yes, they do. so yeah so then so there you could build anything with one of the kits you don't have to make sure you have a hundred only thing you have issue with is the color of the plastic because if you're doing like uh you know, one of the What is it? the Not the GM engine. What's the other one?
Torben Rothgeb: The Honda. The Honda, you know. you have to deal with that but it's it's really not that much different it's really not but Oh. Well, and that well you know a couple more things that we got. We got talking on the judging and we we got on some of the vendors, but we didn't get specifically on what some of the things that stood out for me.
Torben Rothgeb: um And again, the show is about what's important to me. No, no I'm just kidding. But ah the one of the things I noticed that was really cool and I would love to hear somebody who actually has one.
Torben Rothgeb: um although this is the first time I ever saw it, was the paint booth with the waterfall on. I know just looking at it, it seemed very relaxing. But then the don' walk right by the the pragmatic side of me also wonders how well it works. um Because ah does it it take the the... It seems like it would work. Right. um That the water washes all the paint fumes down right away. And ah because I don't know about you, but I hate changing the filter on my paint. It's just like if you bump something, then it's a cloud of dust and paint all over you. I feel like I have to take it right out to the garbage because otherwise it's it's going to be a holy mess. And then as soon as I have a new one up, one paint job, and it's back to being crappy again. So if that eliminates that, I'd be curious to see how often you have to change the filter where the water goes in into. Were they an actual vendor at the show? Yeah. No, it was Spray Gunner. Spray Gunner had them. Oh, that's so that's who's actually selling them? Yeah. And they had two sizes. So they were the ones that had the display?
Torben Rothgeb: Yeah, thank you. Well, I mean, I'm sure you can look them up online. They probably have a video and everything. How much were they? That was the sound side. And you know you always wonder, and it's the the old thing, if you have to ask, you can't afford it, right? That's true. And so in this day and age, you you take your picture with your phone. Right. They had the, what do they call those two things that you scan? QR code. You hit the QR code and then. um
Torben Rothgeb: it totally it went to the price at least the one i went to was 250. do And so. um But I've seen a couple. A couple Japanese guys that are using it.
Torben Rothgeb: Oh really? Tell us. But. I mean, they haven't said one way or the other whether it's better or not, but they spent the money for it. Right. Yeah. and I know that Barbados Rex on his YouTube channel, he's done.
Torben Rothgeb: he's he's reviewed several of them several of those waterfalls that at one point a couple years ago he was doing giveaways and One of the giveaways he did was a waterfall. no I just don't remember because it's been a couple of years since I saw him do one.
Torben Rothgeb: Bye. Hmm. I remember... Aye, he gave them. Positive. Take what he says with a grain of salt. Really? You think so? Oh, yeah. Have you had some trouble? Some large grains of salt. Kosher style salt. Yeah, well, and then I heard that you're only supposed to put what kind of water, distilled water in there.
Torben Rothgeb: Which, and another thing I'd be interested, too, if you don't use it for a while, standing water can really stink. um so what it It will stink. Yes. No, it will. I mean, if it's...
Torben Rothgeb: Well, I'm not going to get into it. And if I if if i don't paint something for a month, I don't want to have to worry about changing all the water. I'll put it to you this way. If you leave a sink. you know. open. yeah and there's water in there for a month and a half what do you think oh my god well now I used to ah paint and do drywall and drywall finishing.
Torben Rothgeb: And the guy I worked with to keep the... um joint compound uh soft so it didn't dry out he would put water in there but you'd open up one of those things that had the water in and oh my god it smelled like somebody taking a dump in this five gallon bucket i i accused somebody of doing that one time don't lie to me yo there's a bathroom in here you don't have to use this but no it's only a matter of time
Torben Rothgeb: You wouldn't think water by itself can smell so good. So I'd be interested in how, if there's something you put in the water that makes it, you know, or if you just keep, are you just supposed to keep it plugged in all the time, like a fountain? You have to keep... No, I have experience with this stuff.
Torben Rothgeb: for projects I've worked on and you have to keep it running. yeah As soon as you stop. then here it comes it's only a matter of time and it's mold mildew you know all the fun Well, when I saw it, I thought of Scott Harview because his two favorite hobbies are the the fish tank and and the model cars. And he could just put some fish in there and they could circulate around. They could look at his face while he's painting. But it was like you say, it was another thing that...
Torben Rothgeb: There's so many things that are specifically targeted right at us yes who like to spend money. You know, we all, we all spent a lot of money there. Yeah. You know, maybe not John. John is very dedicated. I saw that at Michigan too, or the Detroit show, he both you and Chad. they're just like yeah But it's just, you know, I mean.
Torben Rothgeb: cameron and i in toronto hold me back hard yeah So anyway, well, I bought well from spray gunner. I bought my first air compressor that has a nozzle
Torben Rothgeb: and You bought that at the show too, right? Yeah, I bought that for $75. But I got a T -shirt, a Sprigganer T -shirt. What was it? The Ferrari on it that the guy did. did an outstanding job and wrote a book about it. Oh, that's the masera ma did Maserati. Maserati. Yeah. He's quiet. He's quiet.
Torben Rothgeb: piece of work well it's got it my t -shirt has a picture of that on my ah he's a piece of work yeah anything to sell a book right yeahp yeah Well, I have a T -shirt with that on because they gave me a free T -shirt. Technically, it was a T -shirt.
Torben Rothgeb: Technically, it's not free. No, no. But it is interesting, too, because then I had had to, ah because i'd I'd always, you know, people say what pressure they have their thing on. And actually, the first thing I painted was that. I got home and I painted, I put, I decanted Tamiya black.
Torben Rothgeb: um on this uh helio caster nevis car and uh but i was shooting it at 40 air pressure oh my god like that and so it was good enough to get into the you know creases and areas and stuff like that and then i went back the nice thing about when you decant then you can do a final coat of just out of the can and that worked out good enough
Torben Rothgeb: but uh looks nice thank you thank you well uh yeah and that uh but then i kept going down going down and finally i got to about 25 psi and that that seemed to be can give be the right one yeah sweet spot yeah That's cool. Because I've had those Aztec clear blue plastic. ones for years. Never had a problem with them.
Torben Rothgeb: I know. I know you know. And I was blaming the airbrushes. But then um now it's funny, I've been hooking up all of my old airbrushes that I thought were junky and not working. And surprisingly, they run a lot better with an air compressor on it. so So, yes. But I still have not, and i' maybe I'll give this to you, Bob. My harder steam brick one is clogged up. It's still clogged up. I was not able to get it. to even with Even up on 40 PSI, I was not able to unclog it. No, don't plug it. You know how when you put your finger you know how you might you put the your finger up to the thing in a backdress?
Torben Rothgeb: Well, this does it all the time without me putting it on. Just give it to me before we leave. I'll clean it for you. Okay. Awesome. What color is your face at that point? You don't want to know. no No, one time I was decanting paint. And I take this. ah kind of little funnel thing off those ah tubes, those plastic, what do you suck up the paint and you put it in something? Pipette. Pipette. So i I'd taken that and put that off and put it in like a bottle.
Torben Rothgeb: At the top and then I spray it like decanted like that You know. Yeah. And um anyway. Somehow, I don't know. It got clogged up, but I'm spraying it, and it shots right. i I looked like Gene Simmons from Kiss because it shot black all over the side of my face. Luckily, it didn't get in my eye, though, so that's good. What's funny is you can't do it because so much of it. Basic.
Torben Rothgeb: to my opinion isn't available in the lps now you don't need to decant anymore yes But the only thing is, like I said, if you're having airbrush issues, then you can. I'll show you this wonderful tool that I've come.
Torben Rothgeb: come up with. Torben's left the room right now, by the way. so Bring the Heiderstein back out here. do do do do We'll be right back after a word from our hurt you her hand. Now you guys have nobody to blame but yourselves. right Why is that?
Torben Rothgeb: Come with me. You know, I grabbed it. I was not able to grab the one I needed. If only they could see what you're showing everybody. Yes, this is great. project steve mc No, actually, I did not bring this. But here's what I decant paint with.
Torben Rothgeb: um it is uh It is the grassroots tip of the day. I took a regular medicine thing from those years where my son was taking ADHD. medicine so i didn't kill him i would get lots of these medicine bottles But I had to drill holes in the top to get air. And then I took a pipette and I took the filter part.
Torben Rothgeb: And I put it in the lid. And then I'm able to spray. in here. um And yeah, with the Tamiya LP, you don't necessarily need to. Would you ever think about replacing it and get a new one?
Torben Rothgeb: Why? It looks great. I bet. It looks great. Well, you know, I'm very pragmatic. As long as it still works. As long as it still works. You know, every once in a while I've got to pop out these holes a little bit. And I'll take a little pipe cleaner. Okay.
Torben Rothgeb: Get at least most of the paint off. All right. We're ready to go. but No one will know. um if you want. button. Okay, Cameron. Thank you. Thank you. Well, yes, because my son is at college now. Please do that for him. i don't
Torben Rothgeb: I don't have the new pill bottles anymore. He's probably going to have one of those marathon paint sessions coming up. Well, no, that's how he gets like a lot of stuff painted. right With the 2K and all. Well, one more vendor that was there is MCW, and they claim to have a new product that is just as good as or better than Mr. Hobby's self -leveling thinner. and And I have to throw out a… Cheaper? Is it cheaper? No, I have to throw out a…
Torben Rothgeb: person in the car. wonderful RPM Club. who's already tested it. Claude? Santa Claude? The professor. No, the mad scientist. Get it right. And what did he think of it? He thought said it was fantastic.
Torben Rothgeb: Okay, so he highly recommends it. Yeah, you he had quite a few things to talk about at the meeting. And that was... predominantly what he wanted to talk about and good to know you know i mean I give him credit for trying this stuff.
Torben Rothgeb: yeah All right, but now ah now was was he mixing ah mixing it with... A lacquer enamel or acrylic paint? He said everything. I think he tested everything. He tested everything. Okay. Well, that's very much Mr. Hobby's paints, too, you can mix with. You can mix that with anything, Mr. Color Level Infinity. You can mix with anything.
Torben Rothgeb: The only thing you can't use is... Mission miles. No, that's just water. Tap water. According to Bill Reed. According to Bill. What do you mean? The big thing about the MCW. product center is that they're advertising it as compatible with almost everything. yeah Where the Mr. Collar
Torben Rothgeb: hasn't that's been more word of mouth that's true yeah that's very true but uh the mcw they they say they've tested it right on the bottle tested it with this paint this paint this paint this thing did you buy some I did buy a lot. We're shoppers. We all bought some. Yeah, yeah. They also had 2K, which is interesting to see. MCW did. MCW as far as that. And Hardener for the enamel. If he wanted to drive faster. And that's just in a jar, right?
Torben Rothgeb: yep yep Actually, if you guys can talk a motion, I can bring out the MCW paint. We're having another commercial. do don't Don't bring up his name now. we only need another We're do a commercial break. We're going to do Randy's 3D printing. and Bob built a Randy's 3D print. Tell them all about it, Bob. Did you bring it with you? I did not.
Torben Rothgeb: Yeah. Well... How can we review and drool over it at the same time? Well, it was the 1961 Ferrari Sharknose. It was my first 3D printed kit. It was interesting.
Torben Rothgeb: um I had some help because I broke all the wheels. And I broke the steering wheels. And our great friend Steve Hansen. cast up some steering wheel 3d printed some steering wheels for me And I use the wheels from another kit and tires from another kit.
Torben Rothgeb: So there we go. There is the stuff. There it is. Okay. MCW. Did you buy all that there? Yeah, I did. I have a problem. I do have a problem. um yes uh so they have both race hemi orange and hemi orange um they have plum crazy metallic the enamel hardener, the clear.
Torben Rothgeb: One of my favorite colors, Vidaro Green. No, it's been blue. Ford engine blue. Bahama blue metallic. yep panther pink uh marina well the nice thing is it was only uh what was it six dollars six dollars yeah so So so have you trying to have you know i'm looking at ones have me tried enamel hardener?
Torben Rothgeb: I have not tried the enamel hardener. Are those all enamel -based paints? Yes. Yes. That's where they're that's where they're going, you know. MCW's trying to phase out the lacquer. but they have so much of it that they're still selling it.
Torben Rothgeb: Okay. okay well and They want to sell it. That's their calling card is the enamel. Okay. Actually, I bought and i bought these not from MCW. It was another hobby one because the MCW guy was only brought military stuff.
Torben Rothgeb: Because the guy who bought out all the MCW stuff is a military builder. But he knows that the the car stuff is his bread and butter. um So he still continues to do it, but he didn't bring anything to the Nationals. This is another hobby shop. I hear he was kind of like the soup Nazi, you know with no paint for you. cray He was Mr. Krabby Pants. And I suppose really I could kind of understand. I imagine, I'm just imagining this.
Torben Rothgeb: There was probably a lot of people that would go up to him and say, my grandpa had a 62 pontiac and it was green do you have that color you know and he would throw the book at him and say look it up and tell me the color you need because that's what
Torben Rothgeb: Probably what he showed them. Right. Yeah. Yep, yep, yep. I mean... No, what he should have done, he did do, and he sold the business so he could get out of it and not be a crappy salesman. I know. It's a car model hobby. I know. And they're as fickle as it comes.
Torben Rothgeb: They are. I'm not going to name names. No, they they are as fickle as they come out. We saw people at the last Toledo I went to. in 2005 or six, whatever. I mean, just.
Torben Rothgeb: all over Don Holt House. i mean Yeah, that's what they do. And he doesn't talk to them. yeah know he's just He lets his wife do the talking. Because they they frustrate him to no end. Well, of course.
Torben Rothgeb: Because they're, because they're, you know, I want this. Why didn't you bring three of those? Well, to be in sales, I was a little bit probably like education where you're going to have a lot of like.
Torben Rothgeb: dumb questions, but you have to be patient. some water so so or I thought it was 12. Yeah. Isn't it on the package? I guess not. It was probably a show special. there what's that sight I think that it's 14. That bottle at the dungeon is like 14. Oh, okay. oh come Speaking of the dungeon, I'll just throw this out there as long as Bob's gone.
Torben Rothgeb: they're actually going to stay open. half. Fair few more extra days before the um Yes, they close apparently the place they're moving in needs some work. Yes, it does. To be a new and improved dungeon, they need to paint some stuff. I thought they were gone already.
Torben Rothgeb: No, you can still go out there. They said they're going to be open. Did they give a new date or just said that they're going to be open until the previous date? was august 31st yeah so it's it's they're going into september i don't remember what the exact date and like the first week because you know september is kind of a weird month if you saw that you know what when's the first it's like a wednesday Yeah. I think it's around that time. I might go to like the end of the week.
Torben Rothgeb: Um, hey it's more sales right i mean they're they're getting really a lot of A lot of people are coming into the store. Wake up, Dungeon. I think I got something to say to you. It's late September.
Torben Rothgeb: so You guys should be moved by now. Did you run in there and grab something to drink? No, I didn't. I'm very thirsty, actually. but And that leads us to...
Torben Rothgeb: well uh did we cover new releases no no we didn't have we got a chance to talk uh to the guy from round two the guy who does the youtube videos a very nice guy we talked for a long time and we were able to take in some really good looking cars ah The 72 short bed pickup looked really great. Whoever built that did a great job for them.
Torben Rothgeb: And then we were also ah looking at the Bluesmobile. With the speaker on it. That looked really cool. The Mack truck from a Duel.
Torben Rothgeb: That looked really cool. um yeah But I almost feel like you'd have to weather that, right? the The car in the movie or the truck in the movie was really old and weathered. Is this the newer tooling one? That's the truck from Duel? Yeah, Mack. I've never seen that. to oh yeah Oh, you should really watch that. It's a great movie. It's a classic. Steven Spielberg's first... even biberg yeah I would think a film nerd like you would really want to see Steven Spielberg's first movie. Was he a film nerd? Yes, he was in a film club. i Was it Minnesota that you guys... We went to the Film Society when I was younger. Film Society, yes. Duel is still considered one of the...
Torben Rothgeb: Good. Best. greatest made -for -TV movie. It was made for TV. Especially considering it was one of the earliest. Mm hmm. Back when you only had three channels, when you would get something good, you really appreciated it. I remember watching that on the 1030 movie. Slapshot was really good.
Torben Rothgeb: um Brian's song was another good back then. Did you see that? Yes, I did. Yes. shut its here Brian Yeah. But then the 76 Ford pickup.
Torben Rothgeb: yeah I was telling these guys, if you have a boondocker truck, you should probably put it on eBay while you can still get $100 for them because they're a repealer. They've got Korean decals on them now. Well, and we did a feature on the the tow trucks ah and the cooter tow trucks from Dukes of Hazzard. This will probably enable you to do an Uncle Jesse pickup truck with the 76 Ford truck. I want to pick up the snap together.
Torben Rothgeb: um What is that? The little light blue one. The My Little Pony. little so My Little Pony. I want to do that and just bring it to the table for one of our meetings. Yes, that would be really good. Turn on the table. Yeah, My Little Pony.
Torben Rothgeb: My little ponies, my little ponies. Okay. Well, you know, it's funny. You brought over that printout one time, and then Olivia was down here, and that she talked about it for 25 minutes, talked about My Little Ponies and stuff like that. so um yeah yeah if she was younger i might have built it for her yeah He sold you. Mm hmm.
Torben Rothgeb: ah The El Jefe 79 GMC. It's kind of a combination big rig pickup truck. um is is coming out. The Unreal Roller. John, do you remember that they had that built up at the round two? ah What would they call it? Table? Yeah, what does I think they did. It's a show rod. It's a steamroller.
Torben Rothgeb: I think they had it. that yeah um It's a Tom Daniels. creation yeah And only it's done in the 1776 slash, you know. Oh, yeah. Freedom 250. Freedom 250. They also did a Firebird Funny Car. And that's actually out, supposedly. Okay. nice there's quite a few of them that are actually out already
Torben Rothgeb: Well, they did a 2020 -21 Dodge Charger, too, right, with the Freedom stuff on it. As a race car fan, I am almost tired of the red, white, and blue. I remember liking the Dale Earnhardt 1996 Atlanta one. But at this point, how many different things can you do with stripes and stars? Don't get me wrong. I love America. I'd give up my life for it. But no, I just... It's not getting carried away. Just the color scheme, it's been done every which way you can do it. It's not going to give up all the Coke things. It's like, okay, it's red. Yeah, yeah, yeah. But they had that, and the clown, or I think it was a Twisted Metal video game that had this killer clown ice cream truck type thing. For Chad Gale. That looked really cool. It's kind of a snap kit, I think. I don't think there's much to it. No, there's not.
Torben Rothgeb: All clowns all the time. Yes. um yes John M. Owa and then the 81 Camaro. And even that's a tie in with the MCW because they said they're doing eight different Camaro colors. And the best thing about the round two release of the Disco Camaro, 81 Camaro, but it has a 79 Camaro hood.
Torben Rothgeb: That's just what I've heard. I'm not that much of a Camaro expert. Who said that? Everybody I've seen on their reviews have said that it's a 79 hood. I don't know the difference between 79 and 81. So you're saying it's supposed to have a 79 hood or it's not?
Torben Rothgeb: Not. At least there's been a complaint that people have had. They did. They lost the hood. Okay. So that's why it didn't come out when it was supposed to. Was that like two years ago? Okay.
Torben Rothgeb: So they retooled the hood. So I do believe it's an 81. I don't know where they're. Is this Al that's doing this? You know, the stuff you see on Facebook.
Torben Rothgeb: It was the HPI guy had completed his. There's another person you don't want to watch. These were comments below the HPI guy. If you ever see him put decals on a car, you will be shocked. He he throws stuff together to get it out. Because he basically uses like a stick.
Torben Rothgeb: And he puts the decal up to the, I mean, it's like. Use your hands, man. That's what they're for. And that's how you get the decals to stick. you crew you know. Draw it across the table. Yes. And he uses that really thick you know.
Torben Rothgeb: what is it, Matt Tester's paint. the The hardware. Krylon. Krylon. Two times. it Yeah, I mean. He is not going to be at an IPMS Nationals bringing home the hardware. He would do well getting that My Little Pony put together. he but his No, really. You don't have to paint it. I'm sure he gets a lot of views, though. But now this these were in the comments below his. So this would just, you know. anyway And everybody's an expert on the internet. But.
Torben Rothgeb: Um, The new release has like... The different colors, because like the Trans Ams, depending on the color of the car, then they had the different Z28 paint schemes. So that's coming out with them. Speaking of new releases that you probably maybe didn't see in the last couple of days, but...
Torben Rothgeb: Round two has a couple of Chevys that are coming out. There's a 61 Chevy that's coming out. and I'm trying to think of that. Oh, the other one is the... 67. 67 Impala.
Torben Rothgeb: okay And the box art is really well done. and they're did swim sun And the only thing I'm not sure about is that they're molded in color. So I don't know how that's going to go, but it's a factory color. So, I mean, it's kind of a.
Torben Rothgeb: Salvino -esque idea, you know. Oh, no, it is. They were great kits. Yes, the old Lindenberg kit that's coming out. AMT has the tooling. They bought all the Lindbergh stuff. Those were really nicely done.
Torben Rothgeb: Way back in the day when they first their first... ah issue of that, ah something was really off in the body. And then they fixed it and then brought it back out.
Torben Rothgeb: Did you build one of the 61s? I did. I did a Rex White NASCAR one. with it so didn't jim allen build one of those too and he forgot it at the ah he might I don't think he did a 61. He might have done a 62 or something like that. or was yeah um I'm trying to liquidate.
Torben Rothgeb: was. Might have been an AMT. It's one that you had. And then he said, oh, I built one of those too. And he said, I think that's yours. Is that the same? Oh, no, no, no. the fifty That was a 63 Impala.
Torben Rothgeb: Yeah. Lindbergh, yeah. Yeah, it was they did the pace car and stuff. 53 was really good. The 61, I built the 66 Cheville was really good. So Lindbergh did some decent into muscle cars and cars of that era.
Torben Rothgeb: um but then and the 67 impala i built that when it came out that's a really good kit too so those are Are both good kits for people to get. Those are just coming out. They're just announcing them. And then you forgot the the one that i I was all excited about, which was the Soxomart Duster. 72 Duster, yes. 72 Duster looks really cool.
Torben Rothgeb: Um, It should be really... Is he going to have Sox and Martin decals and stuff? I would assume. Wow. Now, are they going to do other 72 Duster? Which ones are they going to do for that? Butch Leal, California Flash.
Torben Rothgeb: Okay. Nice, nice. Well, they should sell a lot of those. Arlen Venke, Duster, and also possibly... And I'm out. Pa. Get it right. Mopar. The first one was motel. It's easy to remember. Mopar or no car. It's one of their monikers. Just ask Tyler. Mopar or no car. Okay, yes, yes. Anyway, so moving along. Yes. All right. So those are. Our new releases. New ones coming out.
Torben Rothgeb: Yep. um okay and uh we did okay the talking about all this judging and um You know, IPMS and then different NNL and whatnot and different things.
Torben Rothgeb: How competitive, if a number one is... you just Your only goal is to get the kit together and to have fun. doing it uh and number 10 is from the second you start that project You're thinking about how.
Torben Rothgeb: you're going to win first place or how it's going to display. And ah you you want to get it all right. and uh would be a 10 that you build.
Torben Rothgeb: only for the contests. um All right, what what... What would you rank yourself? Why don't we start with Cameron? What do you think, Cameron?
Torben Rothgeb: Um... For myself, years ago, I would i would have said... Five, six. Seven. Um, Now.
Torben Rothgeb: I'd say at the most a three. I think about a contest that this might be, you know, what I'm working on might be entered in, but that's not why I do it. I do it.
Torben Rothgeb: i I build what I... what i like not what i think is going to win Because... I want it. enter it in a contest. So i' I'd just say three.
Torben Rothgeb: Okay, three. all right bob what do you think I think I'm... pretty much like a two maybe um as far as contests, but for myself, I'm like a nine.
Torben Rothgeb: So you went home at 2 with a 10 and woke up at 10 with a T. I did. He was waiting for that. Yeah, yeah yeah that was up. yeah I think I'm very competitive with myself Really good job. and get better and better and better for and I don't. really I mean it's great. I like the best thing is if the guy's in the club.
Torben Rothgeb: say, hey, that's a really good job. I mean, if it if it doesn't do well ah at at a contest or whatever, who cares? I mean, I'm just like, I will say I'm competitive enough to walk around the tables. at the nationals and i looked at models i had in a class these were planes and armor and then i looked at the one that won and i went
Torben Rothgeb: what the you know and i'm just like really you should have called them up everyone said show me why i didn't win and right and get and so you you just get puzzled That's all. But that's as far as my competitors. What did Mark Agee tell you the one time? may
Torben Rothgeb: One time, you he was very disheveled about a contest that he didn't win. We don't want it we can't can't say that's a fan. yes is it Otherwise, I'd have to put an explicit. yeah yeah And I don't even know how to do that, so I don't want to do that. Yeah, it's bad. Anyway, so it's fine.
Torben Rothgeb: But it it did, well, for the listeners, it did involve doing some kind of sexual act on a joke. Which is an awful thing for a friend to say about another friend. I mean, if you don't win, the next best thing should be that your friend wins, right? If you think about if you think about the moment ah in time of when it happened, what was going on at the time, which was we were trying to pack up our models from the not against high Nationals. yeah it's
Torben Rothgeb: one in the morning. Because that's when they finished the awards presentation. So you want to talk about a bad experience at the Nationals? That would be it. Yes. So, I mean, you know, it's it's good that they've.
Torben Rothgeb: corrected all those problems. yeah and have moved on because it it really you know it makes a big difference It does. So anyway. All right. John. john taken ah ah Taking home my rob of a lot of hardware in his time. This is like a neat little song. sorry yeah but out of I mean, I could care less about a contest, but like Bob said.
Torben Rothgeb: I'll do a seven or eight. just I'm competing with myself. yeah yeah I could care less about... what happens in a contest. I'm just i'm competing with myself to do the best I can. I won't. Yeah, on every damn model I pick up, even if it's a frickin'... No.
Torben Rothgeb: Shitbox. Frickin'... BMW Z4. Not you.
Torben Rothgeb: Yeah. Yeah. And Mr. Campman, what do you think? Well, I'll use the same. ah the same one that I used at the meeting. which was that. I would say you know most of the time I... I'm like a five, six.
Torben Rothgeb: You know, I don't build for contests. I don't. I'm not Jim Mulligan. And I called him out on that at the meeting. And he admitted that, yeah, I guess I kind of do. And I'm sure there were other words he used on the way home. But in any event.
Torben Rothgeb: I don't build for content. I would like to enter. contest, though. I'm not expecting to win, yeah but if I look at a table and it looks like I have a chance to win, then I feel pretty good about it. yeah so you know Like I said at the meeting, though, you know, I... I would say five to six, but.
Torben Rothgeb: Then when I started that Salvino's kit, it went. right down to like a two and it's still there because it's not done So, yeah, it's.
Torben Rothgeb: you know. It's subjective. you know We've talked about this before. But it's our hobby. It's what we love to do. So anyway. To me, it comes down to that First time you get like... 95 % of the card done.
Torben Rothgeb: And you put it down on the table. And I feel like within five to 10 seconds, it either hits you as like, wow, this this looks. Good. Or this doesn't look like I thought it would, you know. And that said that that to me is when I either am very happy with it or not happy with it, you know. um But you live with it though, right?
Torben Rothgeb: Yeah. Yeah, I... and For the most part, I bring just about everything I bring to a show because I do feel like... It's not about winning. It's kind of more of the NNL displaying what you've built, talking about what you've built. And even if it's not your best effort or as Bob calls them.
Torben Rothgeb: two footers that look good until you get it there. then you know it's something that might inspire somebody else to build what they have. Or hell, maybe they can learn from your mistakes. And you're about to show us to go on. I was going to say, a lot of people don't bring models. You're supporting the show. Yeah, absolutely. all right Yeah, I mean, say what you want about some of our clubs that we go to.
Torben Rothgeb: but if there if there's an a I mean, I think about if I was in a club with certain members who build one car a year, the meetings would be so boring. Right. What would you talk about? You know, they bring something maybe in primer once and you would talk about, you know, so and you talk about the shows. That's you know, that's how we measure ourselves in the shows is by how many cars are on the table. great and so um you know, the Jim Allens of the world that the volume builders are going to, you know, help. And it's going to give you something to talk about. Right? Absolutely. um you know the hobby is big enough for it for everybody everybody's anxious yeah you know Even the people who just buy stuff all the time.
Torben Rothgeb: Like certain. like Like a Ron Troester. He despised tens and tens and tens of stuff. You know what? Yeah, I used to go for... but you made a good point well you know what if you know they're holding on to it they whole answer and you know what people will keep
Torben Rothgeb: keep making kits because people like that buy a whole bunch. Absolutely. And that makes perfect sense. Absolutely. It's capitalist logic. know yep so Yeah, absolutely. Yeah. um So that brings us to what is on the bench? What are you guys working on? What's what's going right? What's going wrong?
Torben Rothgeb: I want to start with Bob. i um I have three things on the bench. I have a Yak -1B, which is an Arma 72nd scale World War II fighter, Russian fighter.
Torben Rothgeb: Absolutely fantastic kit. You could build it in a week if you sat down and and just ripped it. It was gorgeous. mm -hmm and so that's all buttoned up and ready for paint and i've got a rolls -royce armored car that is 1940 version that looks.
Torben Rothgeb: That's coming along nicely. And I'm just started with Torben's great help. the 1987 Bill Elliot. car for our 80s theme nice so nice that's what i'm on John.
Torben Rothgeb: Well, I'm still working on my 787 Mazda. And I've got this frickin'
Torben Rothgeb: BMW Alpha Kit. What a piece of... Caca. We've seen that. Let me tell you. And I've also got...
Torben Rothgeb: three or four AMGs. Already painted. I just got to put the chassis together. Nice. Um, let me see what else am i working on you're working on the dhd bit The mask came today. Oh, good. I know. I'm excited. so and there there was something else too those are pretty much the main ones that i got going on, so.
Torben Rothgeb: You could probably build those AMGs in your sleep. Close, yeah yeah. except when you get into the evo the evo has different bumper in the front and back.
Torben Rothgeb: Okay. there's three companies of making the evo conversion and the only one that's even decent is lb production the other ones are A caca. But even, well, I didn't want to use, I mean, it might be children's space. It's fine. We know what you mean. They're pieces of shit. yeah yeah um So, be production makes them, but. They're kind of, you got to fit them on. So that's.
Torben Rothgeb: Yeah. And LB Production does aftermarket then for... It's aftermarket. They're from... um I think Hong Kong. They're from China. okay but he does i mean he does beautiful work what mask were you talking about Oh.
Torben Rothgeb: These are window masks? They're window masks. are those Are those fun? I love window masks. and I sure don't want to paint it by hand. yeah Well, no, but like the Tamiya Mustang one, that one works pretty well.
Torben Rothgeb: I don't know. This is for a... Hey, yeah. What's it called? they have them in dha that's why i was asking because that's why i'm working on it too Yeah, a Mustang, yeah. Oh, you ever got a real Mustang? Okay.
Torben Rothgeb: Yeah, the Tamiya kit. Oh, okay. Do you have to add something on that? There's the window masks. Oh, that's but it's just a piece, but you put it on them. mm -hmm No, you have to mask it off and it peels off, doesn't it? So the but so the black around the glasses. But it worked pretty well, though. Oh my God. What I would do.
Torben Rothgeb: um like in the windshield cut it down the middle. Oh, really? And do one side at a time. If there's a little space. just put some artemia tape over that spot. you gonna head Don't tell anyone.
Torben Rothgeb: Well, Nobody's gonna see it. You won't see it. but So don't do the whole sheet. you're gonna yeah It lessens the pressure on it. Right. That makes sense. Don't do the whole sheet. Otherwise, you're going to be sitting there trying to get it right. That's what I'm working on. Am I saying that? Cool. It's working out. Cool. Great, great suspension on that kid.
Torben Rothgeb: And then Steve goes and puts an engine in it and opens it up. Damn it, Hanson. Who does he think he is? Did he design his own engine or did he just get it? I don't know. It's 3D printed. Oh, yeah.
Torben Rothgeb: Yeah. It's good for him. All right. Like me, I've got ah always got a million things going on. um I'm looking at them. You know, I did the Arrow Wars display. I didn't quite have it done for the Nationals. I had a few more cars that don't I want to do for that. so This looks really nice. Thank you. Thank you. Yes. Donnie Allison that won the yeah World 600.
Torben Rothgeb: um And I think he's 69. Might have been 70. 69. 69. Yeah, Polar Lights, Ford Talladega. Poppy Red.
Torben Rothgeb: uh interesting enough they had not done uh the decals they they redid the david pearson decals and they redid the kale yarborough decals for those polar light kits but they had not done the donnie allison but they did a decal sheet for the 68 banjo matthews cars like 66 to 68 and they use the same font for the 27s
Torben Rothgeb: and other stuff that I was able to use. And then I had my fingers crossed for the Slicks decals that came in the box that were 26 years old. But thankfully, the Sunny King Ford, which is from the Slicks decal sheet.
Torben Rothgeb: goes over a flat surface. I think that's a secret for doing old slicks decals. If it goes over a flat surface, you're okay. miserable power sight of it yes so right The second you have to bend it over something, that's when it it gets real brittle and cracks. I would agree with that.
Torben Rothgeb: And then another thing, it's not a fluorescent color because those fluorescent colors, no matter what, seem to just crack in the water. So I was able to get that from the slick sheet, and hopefully maybe one day they'll they'll do a whole six. It's really hard to understand when they do a sheet. They could have updated it all the way to Banjo Matthews cars up to 1970 and just put the Sonny King Ford on there and a couple contingency decals. You could suggest that to them.
Torben Rothgeb: Yes, I will try to. ah to suggest that to Mike. But so that is what I got now on the way back from Kentucky. um I was ah Olivia drove and I was able to. Glue the car together in the car.
Torben Rothgeb: riding along. I did not have the exact amount. What glue are you using? John could tell you about the fumes. John's driving going.
Torben Rothgeb: What's that smell? Oh, you wouldn't believe how much. We're using Tamiya glue or what? Yeah. um What I do is my Shoe Goo mix. Are we plugging this in? Yes, we're about ready to power down. So I have got. ah We've been going. we're right Yeah, we're running low on. We're running dangerously close to having technical difficulties. We're running on empty.
Torben Rothgeb: They're loaded with songs. But anyway, so, ah and and... Bob can relate because we both built those indie kits, right? Right. So.
Torben Rothgeb: Um, But if you build it like a tank the armor guys and glue everything together. not mess around with the radio shroud in there that you can't see anyway. um and just glue all the pieces together And.
Torben Rothgeb: There's actually... it Two main ah constructions on on the, we're talking about the Salvinos Indy kit. There's the front of the car, the monocoque. And then there's the engine part that's in the back of the car.
Torben Rothgeb: And if you glue those two things separately... Yeah. um you can You can end up fitting the seat in there after the fact, after you've painted it. um And then... You click the part the back part with the engine together after you've painted it.
Torben Rothgeb: What I did, actually, is I put it together, and I painted the engine, and then I put it together, and then I painted the whole car, and I masked off the engine. um I did get a little bit of overspray on the exhaust pipes, so I'm going to go back. I actually bought some stuff at the Nationals.
Torben Rothgeb: um That was... ah This rubon chrome rub -on I'm gonna try and see if that works. Maybe that will be better for the overspray that I got from painting the car body black um But if you do that I feel like...
Torben Rothgeb: Like the ride the ride back from Kentucky to here And I didn't work on it the whole time. It was about eight hours. I got everything glued together in about eight hours.
Torben Rothgeb: and then i painted it to the pan right now so yeah as it is uh i got the car and it's painted black and i got some of the pink in there uh for the decals the helio castroneves 2022 winner. 21. 21, right. um
Torben Rothgeb: I probably have about 15 hours in that and it's, it's coming together. it's you know two The seat is in it. do Now that I might have to paint a flat black Vallejo paint yeah in it. And then it has a seatbelt thing that goes in. right Just a little steering wheel thing that goes on and I think, you know, when Rick was talking about building those, he was saying.
Torben Rothgeb: that you could build it in a weekend and we've really laughed at that that's like the biggest load of bull crap that you've ever heard However, after doing it this way, I think you probably could. You probably can.
Torben Rothgeb: You know, like I said. Are you ordering as we speak? Maybe. So you just have to go on the drive. Yes. Yep, yep, absolutely. um Interesting. It looks really nice in the decals. I thought that was paint. I'm sorry. Yeah, I did too. Yeah.
Torben Rothgeb: Yep. Well, and that, we've always said that about Salvinas. The best part of their kits are their decals. Their decals are really good. And then the hair dryer method ah isly great really So, um you know, the nice thing about the Indy kits, you don't have bare metal foil.
Torben Rothgeb: So that's not going to slow you down. Are those chrome wheels on that one or not? No, they're black. Oh, okay. They're black on that one. Cool. so Johnny Cash. And then I still have some other Arrow Wars cars. I'm doing the Charlie Glotz back Dodge Daytona.
Torben Rothgeb: and the Bobby Isaac K and &K Daytona. um so those those i'm working on and then i i got a disco camaro from the ipms nationals um Doo doo doo.
Torben Rothgeb: Yes. um I'm going to try to be cheap and... ah Get some decals, although I'm sad MCCM probably would have been the best place. to score a thing of decals from people who aren't going to use the decals. But I'm sure somebody else, because they give you... like eight different color options for the z28s so all i need is one um
Torben Rothgeb: and So is he going to sell these kits to Ralph? Do you think Ralph will have them? Oh, I predict out of the new new releases, I think that one will sell the most. So you're just going to score a few of the decals then?
Torben Rothgeb: yeah Just one option, because nobody's you're only going to use one color choice. Can't you age just pick one of the eight or whatever? and that's why That's what I'm hoping. yeah Whoever I run into that has bought this kit and is building it, even if they're going to build it stock, and there'll be people who aren't. because the the kit takes a lot of work to do a stock because it comes because they even though they have a stock swan uh kind of put like a stock looking camaro paint He did a painting on the box.
Torben Rothgeb: the actual kit comes It's the same pro street kit that comes with the big and littles. The back wheels look like Can -Am wheels, and the front wheels are the NASCAR wheels. And then they give you aftermarket rims, and then they give you a 427 in it.
Torben Rothgeb: so To make it a stock Z28, you have quite a bit of work to do on it. And that's what you're going to do. um Um... Probably. Yes, absolutely. I'm not going to put the big wheels on it. I'm certainly not going to do the side pipes on it. he's um So, yeah, im and I saw some 3D printed ah kind of like those turbines that came on the Camaros on some of the wheels.
Torben Rothgeb: um I'll probably do that. What's a good aftermarket stock? muscle car tire. I was going to say you're talking about a turbine type wheel or whatever. Yeah. they have three d you know that steve sutter put some really nice turbine wheels on his Headsoul oh okay so i could i could see if he has some of those the the unreal edsel uh yes yeah No, that's what he used, and they were.
Torben Rothgeb: I don't. what's What's the word you were using? I have no words. No, you had a word for the... The whole thing you're working on. Oh, the POS stuff? Yeah. Well, it wasn't POS stuff. It was something else. cockcock he yes cockco it's probably the biggest cockka model i've seen since the last molly fish which was the Which was the monkeys.
Torben Rothgeb: Hey, but, you know, kudos. I got to say, Steve, he won the award for best movie car. so yeah know yeah you also know You also know this. Maybe you've forgotten. Is that when that certain club has a club?
Torben Rothgeb: Themed for the NNL, all the members vote for the model. in that club. dont white wins But there were some really good movie cars. There were, but that wasn't one of them. Well, you know, they voted on, I think, the creativity. There was creativity. You've got to get creative. It's toilet creative. Let's just keep it moving. yeah Steve's a great guy. He's a very nice ice person. guy Yes, I would agree. yes Um,
Torben Rothgeb: All right, Cameron, what do you have on your bench? Because, you know, you really, to fire up the 3D printer, you've made a deal with yourself. You have to get this done. so how How is it coming along, Cameron? It's coming along slow.
Torben Rothgeb: I have made a little bit of progress on the interior. And I just... ah in the past couple of days got myself distracted with uh part.
Torben Rothgeb: redoing part of my modeling. t r workbench. You're redoing the paint thing, right? yeah yes yes That's important. You've got to have that freak you got walk before you can Part of the... part of the inspiration Part of the inspiration for this distraction is...
Torben Rothgeb: Um, the lacquers that I have from MCW. in particular. at least one of the bottles is leaking Alright. That smells good. And it smells.
Torben Rothgeb: yeah And you don't know where it is? And I can't find... i thought I thought I had it figured out, changed moved to the paint into a ah new bottle and everything, and it's it's still there. Well, I bought some. ah from Amazon, some air tights.
Torben Rothgeb: storage containers. And to to use those, I need to change where I keep the paint containers. So just to clarify, you have a lot of these MCW lacquer bottles.
Torben Rothgeb: the bigger ones you mean like this is ah yeah not not the big round but the small ones the standard one ounce ones okay and One's leaking, but you can't figure out which one it is.
Torben Rothgeb: The one that that I can actually see the liquid level. at Yale. has gone down noticeably. So I thought I had that figured out.
Torben Rothgeb: um None of the others look like they're missing any of the... the thinner in it it's a glass bottle it's a glass bottle won't you eventually dry out curious and that's the one that i transferred.
Torben Rothgeb: Yeah, because they're... kids. gone down quite a bit sure Bye. It's still. in the container In the container? It's a glass bottle like this. Yes. And... It seems to be leaking.
Torben Rothgeb: something Something is leaking because the lacquer. Smell. in the in the container that I have. those paints in is really strong. there There's no hiding that. No hiding that. But I just feel like a glass bottle would like have a crack in it.
Torben Rothgeb: You look at the bottle and it doesn't have a crack in it? No, I figured it was in the seal of the cap. Do you have it you put it upside down? No. Ted, you ever opened it before? I opened it. So you think it's evaporating? It it is evaporating. it It has gone down. That's the only one.
Torben Rothgeb: in that hole. batch of MCWs and gravities and and so on. ah And I transferred that paint into a new bottle.
Torben Rothgeb: Got it as tight as you as I can, good seal, everything. And. Right. i still and it's in the whole container with all of those paints so it's driving me crazy okay so i'm hoping these uh Several.
Torben Rothgeb: airtight containers will So what if it leaks as long as I've got? thinner. to to replenish it right so do you mark the bottle you take a marker and mark where the bottle is
Torben Rothgeb: No, I haven't done that. Maybe you see that. i so I always did with the alcohol with the kids in the house. make sure they But they could be adding water. You just never know. Since I'm the only one in the house, I don't think the cats or the dog are getting down there to be tippling it. I know I'm not. Maybe you should make a ah new deal with yourself that you're not going to watch. any YouTube videos or movies until you have... What what is this? Nunu? What is it? It's the mo mo mom' portion nine three five Momo
Torben Rothgeb: Porsche 935. Okay. And and how what percentage do you think it's done on this? I'd say 70. 75%. it looks great that so far yeah yeah the body is almost completely done And it's just a matter of getting the interior.
Torben Rothgeb: from the donor kit. finished. Part of the problem is. the donor kit Um, What it has for a roll cage is...
Torben Rothgeb: Like. One sixth of the real roll cage comes in the kit. So everything else, I've got a scratch build. And then once I've got that done, it's getting.
Torben Rothgeb: Bye. The donor. interior and chassis up. today. today. Get the body on it and You got the hard parts to done.
Torben Rothgeb: you know the body and stuff yeah yeah making the roll cage doesn't sound like fun but oh well Right. You'll do it. So for whatever reason, I i'd keep. Have a block and keep putting off. I don't want to deal with this roll cage and But.
Torben Rothgeb: Have you seen the 3D printed ones? Are there something that could? I've seen them. and And that's almost enough to get me to fire up. the the printer because i've I've...
Torben Rothgeb: downloaded a number of the free ones. As long as it looks halfway decent. it's just getting myself i've got the i've got the class struck. Maybe you could get Steve to design it. I could be. and I'm just hoping that.
Torben Rothgeb: be Bend the plastrock. I don't care. how well it matches as long as it's closed, throw some paint on it. get it in there so that it looks better than how visible is it once the car is put together um it it'll be visible. uh -huh because the interiors are black right The interior is black. The roll cage is going to be a gunmetal. so Mm -hmm.
Torben Rothgeb: Cheers. Cheers. getting past the block. And I started doing that. i've been working on the the seat belts that i've got to add to it and and so on before i do the the roll work on the roll cage.
Torben Rothgeb: Cool. But get past that block. and
Torben Rothgeb: Get the damn thing done. That is the hardest part. That last 10. percent is hard because you have so much you have more to lose you have a lot of hours invested and if it's really starting to look good and then you're like oh you add you're adding additional pressure ti to Cameron now. I don't want to screw it up. Nobody can add more pressure than I'm doing to myself. Just remember it's just a model.
Torben Rothgeb: Just sit on there. and it's the last 10 that's always the hardest That's where I make like 90 % of my mistakes. It's like, look at that. You made a mistake. I'm good.
Torben Rothgeb: I'm almost done. And then it's like. I'll hurry along. No, that doesn't help. You know what I mean? well and there's that's My thing is then that gets me. distracted. Because I'll be.
Torben Rothgeb: thinking about, well, I can go down to the workbench and I have to do bare metal foil. Or I can just putz around on this Camaro that I just bought. I'm going to putz around because, you know, you can't screw this up very much. right But if you're doing merifoil, you can screw it up real quick. Or glue the windows in. or we know was in
Torben Rothgeb: Although I got to say, i'm you know, another plug for the Gorilla Clear Grip. uh that is as do you know i even left the bottle the top off of it yesterday i came down today i was you know picking stuff up down here and uh Like, fuck. I seen the bar the top and I'm like, this can't be good. The top of the clue is here. the clue And so I go, but then I just stick a toothpick down in the tube.
Torben Rothgeb: ah You know, and then it kind of. apply pressure and then it kind of but goes out all at once and then it's new again. So even if i even though I left the top off for 24 hours, it's good stuff. to If I did that on a superglue thing, I'd be freaking out. Someday you'll have to teach me how to use this set.
Torben Rothgeb: so okay Well, yeah. It is very forgiving for putting windows in. It's pretty easy. It's a lot less stressful putting windows in. No, I haven't. I haven't either. I thought I talked to you in Dubai at that time. He almost bought it. Steve bought some. I know team haded to two but yeah Steve hanton yeah Hanson?
Torben Rothgeb: Yep. When we were at his house, he had some. Oh, right. okay Now, like I said, there is a learning curve because it comes out stringy. So you've got to kind of feel like you're eating spaghetti. You can't get away from the strings. It's going to come out of the – The nice thing is it dries like caulk. So if there is any extra there, it just you just peel it off.
Torben Rothgeb: It doesn't stick. to... dental work. It doesn't react. Yeah, and it doesn't react with paint. No, it doesn't. And it doesn't react with clear plastic. So if I'm going in a front window like this. Yes, that's perfect for it. And just drop it in. Anywhere, yeah.
Torben Rothgeb: yeah i'm not sure it's that simple four corners well i'm just wondering you wait and you guys make it sound so simple yeahp I was even putting in little wheel weights on the rims and just a little dab of that and then will do yeah stick it with the toothpick in. for right And then a little bit came out the side and I just peeled that off. That's good stuff. What you got to do then is.
Torben Rothgeb: a demonstration at the RPM Club. Yeah, understand I'd like to see that demonstration. but I agree for that. yeah It's great if you have to fix something, like you're at a show and the wheel maybe broke off or something like that.
Torben Rothgeb: And it's it's like... Right now you've got something that will actually hold together long enough so you can put it in the show. No one would know that it was, you know, to try to repair it. John could have used it. I mean, you think they of another glue that you could get. Put your fist on the McLaren wing. It when it had hung together there. Yeah, and it's still together. go Where was this, at the Nationals? Yeah. yeah i pulled it the McLaren F1 out.
Torben Rothgeb: And. That was the one you won with, isn't it? Yeah. and yeah they're the right one like and Basically... two struts and dwayne it's like oh son of a bitch so camera's holding so a light on it tonight getting that thing glued back together and it held up it yeah it's still out yeah go got through the contest yeah And one.
Torben Rothgeb: um What was I using? i don't I didn't see what you were... I think it was... it was like a white blue. okay el moves clue hard it wasn't Elmer's It's one of the little microscale Microsoft. Oh, okay. It's the micro crystal clear. yeah Oh, that stuff's great.
Torben Rothgeb: Yeah. Yeah. That's such really great. That's good. hey It kept it. It was even straight. All right. Nice. Nice. All right, well, that brings us to our Super 6. It's a little different this this episode. We have with Labor Day coming up. again, which is my least favorite holiday.
Torben Rothgeb: Um, I decided to rank the holidays ah with your six favorites. And then your one that is your least favorite or you dislike the most. So you have to have six. You have to have six? Favorites. Good luck.
Torben Rothgeb: Why don't we cut it in half? It's been a long show. We're already at the ah two -hour mark. oh So I think. 220 might be our record uh i think this is what that was the one oddly enough is Jim and I did two, two hours and 20 minutes. So, yeah, I know. I know. um So. ah we'll We'll cut it to ah three your three favorites and then your least favorite.
Torben Rothgeb: all Alright. take it away bob uh my favorite would be Christmas. Because I'm a musician, I get to play great, fun Christmas music. Uh huh. um what's your favorite christmas song to play well there's many no well I could go on. Just give us a couple. That's all. Silent Night? You don't like Silent Night? How about Jingle Bells? No Jingle Bells.
Torben Rothgeb: What time do you want to get out of here? Rudolph the Red -Nosed Reindeer. So I guess Christmas? I've got. um Easter I like because that's the down. That's like you're your your the end of your school year, whenever I hit Easter as a church musician.
Torben Rothgeb: it's all downhill to summer. after that okay And then probably. Um... I would say Halloween because it's fun for kids and stuff. yeah my very least favorite is fourth of july So.
Torben Rothgeb: okay what what don't you like about patriotic crap so Patriotic crap. All right. Do you like fireworks at least? I don't like the fireworks. How about cold beer?
Torben Rothgeb: How about late Lee Greenwood? Let's move on. I don't think you're going to get him for any of this. At least this from the lakes of Minnesota. I think you should just move to another country. Do you at least cheer when they say the lakes of Minnesota? No. Okay, that's mine.
Torben Rothgeb: wow nice Okay, John, what do you got? I think Halloween's going to be on the top one. It's a dentist. You made a lot of money off of Halloween over the years. No, favorite's Christmas because I'm down in Arizona.
Torben Rothgeb: with my sister thanksgiving because I'm either going over to the neighbors or going over to my cousins for Thanksgiving. Thanksgiving is a good one, yeah. Yeah. um Boy. Pick another one.
Torben Rothgeb: I used to like 4th of July, but... Bob ruined it for you. I didn't ruin I like going to see him in in Wisconsin. Um,
Torben Rothgeb: They shoot these fireworks off of some of the lakes and it's it's gorgeous. but Didn't go this year because my... Nephew. and his wife and their two kids who were going to be there and
Torben Rothgeb: I've disowned her, so. Oh, okay. We'll get into that. Let's do tell. bench That's a good enough reason. All right. Now, maybe is her birthday your least favorite holiday, or do you have another least favorite holiday? I don't have any of the least favorites. now i Not even Groundhog Day? or I love the movie, but... Is that really a holiday?
Torben Rothgeb: i don't know it is this counts yeah i mean you can judge anything all yeah yeah That's true. All right, Jim. what you think Well, I'll have a unique one that you guys won't think of, of course, because it's not something you're into. but My favorite holiday of all time is...
Torben Rothgeb: Labor Day weekend because it's the NHRA US Nationals. Indianapolis. yeah And it's like six days of. non -stop entertainment so it's I used to go every year, but anyway, um yeah, it's it's a great event. It's coming up.
Torben Rothgeb: a couple of weeks. and um then you know Other favorites? I mean, I I love... um 4th of July. I'm a very patriotic person. I don't, I'm not going to wear. He loves America. Yeah, I do. He rises for the pledge and kneels for Jesus. Now you're putting words in my
Torben Rothgeb: well yeah no I like most holidays. i don't you know Easter is fine. how Halloween is a great holiday. How about Yom Kippur? No, I'm not of that.
Torben Rothgeb: you race so I love them all. We've just started getting school off for that one. So I get to stay home. that is open door you like I don't know that there's really one that I don't like.
Torben Rothgeb: i mean it's It's only one day, so it's not like... You don't have to celebrate it. um Yeah, no, it's it's fine. you know i mean it's It's something you get used to, I guess. I don't know.
Torben Rothgeb: Well, not to be a contrarian, but I've already brought it up, Labor Day, in spite of the U .S. Nationals and it used to be the Darlington, the Southern 500. I think it's still the Southern 500. You know, they kept messing with it, but I think it is back on. its on again. No.
Torben Rothgeb: Well, no, this coming weekend is not. So, yeah, this coming weekend they're racing at Daytona. So, yeah, I think Labor Day weekend they are still doing a Southern 500. In spite of that, though, it's my least favorite holiday because I got to go back to work. But then even beyond that, summer is my favorite holiday. I love summer.
Torben Rothgeb: And so the thought of getting colder and... Although, recently the falls have gone a pretty long time. so yeah um hopefully well And this is supposed to be an El Nino year, so hopefully it'll be a mild winter.
Torben Rothgeb: Well, and you also have the bench to look forward to when the days get cold. Yep, building season begins. That's a gift, in my opinion. So everybody will be at the meeting. Yeah, it's exactly. September, it just goes like this. I mean, it's, you know, all our favorite themes and all that stuff. It starts with September with the swans. They're all there. it's Could be.
Torben Rothgeb: Yeah. well uh and then uh for uh and i'll do the opposite my favorite uh like you for a sporting event Memorial Day and the Indy 500 and the start of summer and warm weather is my favorite. yeah um And the year is winding down. I usually only have like a week and a half after Memorial Day. We get out for summer.
Torben Rothgeb: So that is good. When I was a kid, my brother's birthday was May 25th. So we had that to look forward to. And usually the summer blockbuster movies were coming out. Empire Strikes Back, Raiders of the Lost Ark, those kind of things to look forward to. So Memorial Day and then a another food and a sporting event, Thanksgiving. Get to watch Dallas Cowboys howward come out. And then also Thanksgiving.
Torben Rothgeb: stuffing one of my favorite foods all kinds of good stuff to eat stuff so yes ah Even though it is, you know, the weather is starting to get really cold on Thanksgiving. I think you brought that up. Yeah. that is Yeah, i don't I don't like cold weather. Maybe maybe John can take me to Arizona this year. um
Torben Rothgeb: And then for a third one, it is funny. There is nothing like Christmas morning. Especially when you're a kid and then even when you have kids watching all the joy. An excitement of opening up presents is fun. Now I'm... Getting to be an empty nester.
Torben Rothgeb: um I guess. I guess I might still have it in my third spot just because. Yeah, I think. ah You know, it is it is still.
Torben Rothgeb: There's something about Christmas. it is It is special. So I'll put that in at number three. Not to be negative, I probably put a couple others in. Um,
Torben Rothgeb: My ones I don't like. Holidays I don't like. You put a lot of thought into this. Yeah. I did. I did think holidays. New Year's Day, I feel like. Maybe it was different. The one year I was in Florida, it was pretty fun.
Torben Rothgeb: Because, you know, we were watching bowl games and they lit off fireworks on the beach and that was pretty fun. But at least if you're up here in Minnesota, New Year's day is kind of new year's Eve is kind of that holiday where you sit around and you feel like a loser because you're watching all these, the ball drop, and you're watching all of these.
Torben Rothgeb: uh you know celebrities and everything Everything. and Everybody's having a good time. And you're sitting on the couch. and Am I going to eat another Dorito? or And it may be because I'm going to start my diet the next day. And it's it's just kind of that FOMO because you're watching all these people. So all the beautiful people are celebrating. And here you are is 20 below zero. You don't want to go outside. And I would put New Year's Eve. as one of my lesser holidays and Groundhog Day too. Because it you know it doesn't matter what the groundhog does. um
Torben Rothgeb: You're still going to have another six weeks, eight weeks of winter. God knows. With that Milwaukee show. And that would have been like eight weeks after Groundhog Day. How many times do we get stuck in snowstorms and stuff like that going there? um so i came up with three holidays i didn't like and i'm not a person that gets depressed on the no button you know All right, Cameron, what what do you got for us? Take it home. take your Yeah, out take it home. Number it number one.
Torben Rothgeb: is Christmas. there lifetime memories of of that holiday Yeah. Howdy. not pick that.
Torben Rothgeb: And I love Christmas music. um What's your favorite Christmas song? Can you give us that one? ah It changes. It changes depending. um uh, but uh The Little Drummer Boy by Harry Simeon.
Torben Rothgeb: Choirs. Do you ever play that one, Bob? Yes, I have many times. And you still hated it. I don't. Number two has to be. uh, Um,
Torben Rothgeb: Memorial Day because of the Indy 500, the Monocle Grand Prix. Forget the World 600. Vegetarian chili and bobs. Get together and bobs for the 500.
Torben Rothgeb: um Even though you weren't there. And I, third third has to be. uh
Torben Rothgeb: Halloween. Okay. Failed. as one of my favorites. So you still dress up? No, I i don't, but I do. Can we talk into it? I do hand out. I do still hand out. candy if if any kids come to the house.
Torben Rothgeb: If. Well, it's it's a lot less than eight years. No, it is. It is a smaller group. yeah Or then it's a car full of middle school kids that aren't dressed up. yeah this takes I did go through several bags of...
Torben Rothgeb: candy that I had got. Oh, nice. right Then you could spool them around the basement. so what's your favorite say What's your favorite Halloween candy? Um, Is there just one? There's...
Torben Rothgeb: All kinds. so re Reese's. peanut butter cups. It is high up on the list. And my least least favorite is...
Torben Rothgeb: Um,
Torben Rothgeb: I don't have a re favorite at least A least favorite? Not even circus peanuts? Black licorice? No, no, he's talking about holidays. ah Oh, well, he's talking about holidays. Circus peanuts. I like, you know, that's the circus peanuts. Candy corn? Oh, corn. Oh, God. Circus peanuts. I don't that I've ever had circus peanuts. There just isn't a holiday that I i actively don't like. Okay, you got it. Mr. Positive over there. Yes, thank you, Cameron. Who knew? It's a good thing that we finished off with you. All right. And that is going to finish off episode 21. Kudos to the Wood Brothers. Kudos to Dion, Neon Dion Sanders. Any other famous 21s you can think of? Roberto Clemente, maybe?
