Torben Rothgeb

Torben Rothgeb
Hello Tiny Car listeners.

Fast Summer and Trips

00:00:18
Torben Rothgeb
Well summer is moving fast but not as fast as Cameron driving in Nebraska. Cameron has joined us to talk about the wonderful trip to Nebraska, along with Bob and our favorite guest, Jim Campman, is here to talk about the history of the Model Car Museum, seeing as how he was such a a pioneer of the hobby back from The early days. in Great times with Mark Gustafson. I feel really old all of a sudden.
00:00:49
Torben Rothgeb
Yes. So, yeah, we got all kinds of great content to talk about.

New Products and Nostalgia

00:00:54
Torben Rothgeb
I got more 3D adventures. We also have a plethora of new products, including the El Jefe 79 GMC truck, which is dynamite.
00:01:05
Torben Rothgeb
Some decals from Mike's. Are you talking about... Watching the Brickyard, I was reminded of something that has lost its luster in recent years, although I enjoyed watching the Brickyard.
00:01:18
Torben Rothgeb
And remember talking about what we have on the bench, the IPMS Nationals, Nordicon up in the upper Midwest, and then after our trip to the Speed Museum,
00:01:30
Torben Rothgeb
We're going to talk about, we're each going to try to come up with our six favorite museum cars. I don't know if Cameron's going to be able to do it. Actually, I should say, I don't know if Cameron's going to be able to narrow it down to six. He might be at 66, but we'll see.

Model Car Museum's Move

00:01:46
Torben Rothgeb
um But going back to the Museum of Speed, um that's ah where we were at this past week, and it was just a One of those ah once in a lifetime type of things I'd compare to the yeah last and NNL Nationals where you had just a yeah a bunch of the big knockers of the hobby were there as they moved the a model car museum from Utah to the Nebraska Museum of Speed. And just a lot of different people from the hobby were there to talk.
00:02:23
Torben Rothgeb
um And just to ah talk and look back at the museum over the years. So guys, what what did you think of of the weekend?

Museum Visit Highlights

00:02:35
Torben Rothgeb
It was a great time, wonderful to be at the museum to see all the changes since we were there in 2022. And um there were and there were a lot of changes.
00:02:49
Torben Rothgeb
The model car museum was real interesting to see because I never saw it in Salt Lake, obviously. So it was definitely worth it.
00:03:03
Torben Rothgeb
couldn't spend enough time in the museum. Yeah, no. um You know, you walk into the museum and then then the right to the left, they have these engines, ah these offies, and then they had Miller, who was, I want to say Arthur Miller. I know it's not Arthur Miller. Harry.
00:03:21
Torben Rothgeb
Harry Miller was the... No playwrights involved. yes miller No playwrights. And and he was he was the guy who originally started the engine and then... ah often Hauser, then bought it after that. um yeah and And then obviously made a lot of many, many Indy 500s. Yeah. Right.

Car Collection at Museum of Speed

00:03:45
Torben Rothgeb
It was great. I thought it was really fun. It was great to see people that I've just seen their articles and magazines. meet Nice to meet Vince Labasco. It was fun to meet Terry Jesse, super nice. Randy Durer was super nice.
00:03:56
Torben Rothgeb
um Yeah, it was just cool to see a bunch and a bunch of different cars. A lot of cars in the from the model and the model contest. It was it was wheel to wheel, stacked. Yeah, they had to get extra tables. Wasn't it like 600?
00:04:10
Torben Rothgeb
A little over 600, yeah. Because when I i got my ticket... mine was at 5 65 you know and then we came in early and on we came in early on friday morning and there were people coming later after that yes there are people yeah because andy came in after us and he had a bunch of stuff it was like friday wasn't it yeah right when i had not been to the museum of speed so you know i was bowled over by that as far as um you know Then they had a lot of Unser stuff. I was wondering, did they have a museum for the Unser and then they donated it? No, they never had one before. They donated the entire car collection, yeah everything that they had collected over there. And there's a lot. You think about all the Unsers. So right yeah know basically they just went, you know here you go. right
00:05:00
Torben Rothgeb
and So they had to find a place to put all this stuff. right right And i know how much Bob really appreciated that. He was a huge... You know, Bobby. and I got a great shirt with Al Onser on it. so yeah did not Well, as soon as you come out of the first room and then you're you're hit with, there

Indy 500 Cars and Replicas

00:05:19
Torben Rothgeb
was 70 Indy 500 winner. Right. The Johnny Lightning, song her a luser car. And the winner across room. Was that the actual car or was that like... We don't know. Yeah. would you find Well, some of those guys had like a second car built and I think that's probably what it's from. Okay. Because otherwise, i mean, how you going to get all that down there? probably Yeah. Yeah.
00:05:41
Torben Rothgeb
And, ah you know, a lot of that the Indy Museum has already all the winners typically they get. up so Yeah. They even had Uncle Bobby's 68 Rizzlone Eagle. That's one of my favorites. Oh, my God. That was great.
00:05:59
Torben Rothgeb
And Rizzlone, isn't that the toilet company or whatever? No, Olsenite. Olsenite was the toilet company. Right. It was just some great cars. There were tons of... dirt cars, tons of great histories of dirt cars, midgets, and the big shit cars sprint the big Chevy Sprint cars from the 60s, A.J. Ford's car. and yes They had a room for almost everything. you know They had a room of Indy Pace cars. right um so They had a cool 70 Oldsmobile. You were jonesing over that That really cool. They had a 78 Corvette. had... um
00:06:38
Torben Rothgeb
Interestingly enough, I thought, why do they have Thunderbird? um But apparently ah Bobby, or no, it was one of the Yonzers. They had ah one, but instead of getting the... um The pace car, they wanted to be practical, so they took this Thunderbird. Really?

Museum's Varied Car Collection

00:06:59
Torben Rothgeb
Because they thought it would be, he just had small kids. And so he took the Thunderbird instead of the pace car. The Thunderbirds took the Thunderbird. Yeah, I was going to say, it would have to be either Bobby or Al, because they were the only ones that won. Back then. that's interesting. Mm-hmm.
00:07:18
Torben Rothgeb
So, yeah, they had some cool pace cars. And they had a whole room for, like, the speed, ah you know, for The land speed cars. vo but Yeah, the land speed cars. Some great break records great great dragsters. um Just really stuff.
00:07:33
Torben Rothgeb
The only thing, a little disappointing, especially since you guys showed the picture of the Wood Brothers car, it was a little bit low on NASCAR stuff. There was about two or three, and they were very ah blah. El Cassell special. Well, Excedrin. Yeah, one was an Excedrin Jimmy Johnson Bush car. And I think the other one was, too. They weren't really cars that you would recognize. So they didn't have a lot of NASCAR there. But just about every other form of racing. does you know When we were there in the 20th century, they had...
00:08:07
Torben Rothgeb
the Wood Brothers Mercury, those were all in that first room as you come into the museum. And this year, that's where they had the Indy

Pedal Cars and BMX Memories

00:08:23
Torben Rothgeb
cars. Right. Yeah. like i Like I told you, when you go to ah in internet indianapolis motor speedway you can go and see the jeff gordon collection yeah i'm really looking forward to that because that's a new exhibit that they just uh opened up like a week ago be funny yeah i went to the uh yeah i went to the museum in the uh mid 90s and i do uh i think they did have gordon's uh
00:08:47
Torben Rothgeb
first brickyard winner. um And, you know, a lot of cool stuff. but Do we cheat him and how, especially? Because that one apparently had all kinds of stuff.
00:08:58
Torben Rothgeb
And goodies? Yeah, I'm sure. ray Ray wouldn't talk about it. Yes. Don't ask me when I'm in my deathbed and i still might not tell you there were rooms of fords and chevys there was really a lot of nice model a's and model t's oh that's cool well they they had a lot of uh like the dusenberg and there was a lot of classics i'm surprised andy didn't spend any time with those but you know he invented someone else there was some there was some really little coffin was there, which was pretty cool. One of your favorites. No, I really liked it. It was cool. Don't lie. Even I thought some of that stuff looked better in person. Don't forget about the Boothill

Dragsters and Funny Cars

00:09:48
Torben Rothgeb
Express. Yeah. passing that by but i mean the other one is the landy 64 oh yeah yeah they had some really cool drag cars eyes on so you know look out they had a a snake uh funny car it was a school sponsored one though oh really yeah they had that firebird uh is it maroon yeah maroon yeah that's that's predominance yep really you don't remember which one it is that one
00:10:15
Torben Rothgeb
No, I had Bob take a picture to because I was wearing a Skoll shirt. to so shirtd Two bandit. That's cool. So, um no, and then they had they had that one picture I showed you with the oh yeah the um the Color Me Gone. Color Me Gone car, yeah. That I had not seen. yeah era He raced into the 70s with it. It wasn't very successful, though.
00:10:40
Torben Rothgeb
And then they had another ah Duster funny car. Didn't they have the Ram Chargers one? Yep, that was the Ram Chargers one. They had the Outlaw, and we had just seen Eric Zabel's really, really nice model of it. And all of a sudden there was, and I sent a picture of a character, and he's like, oh, my goodness. That was a lot of work going back to sleep. Give me it to me a Tamiya kit. Right.
00:11:03
Torben Rothgeb
so And they had the ah the pedal cars, which, you know. Wow, it's all on one floor. I had a little a heartbreak. You did? Well, you know, as a kid, my brother had the 64 1⁄2 Mustang, the yellow pedal car, and I had a Ford Falcon pedlock fire engine

Childhood Anecdotes and Nostalgia

00:11:23
Torben Rothgeb
one. We see what his mom loved. That's sick. They weren't too, they were I remember being hard to pedal and move around.
00:11:32
Torben Rothgeb
But then um my mom had this real dirtball neighbor. And he, ah and he had this is a true story. He hacked into our power too and the phone. So he he was a dirtball, but he was a pretty smart dirtball to try to. Right. My mom never thought about it. She came home one time and there's like this five foot aluminum ah ladder. by the ah by the window. And so she put it in the garage. Oh, well, it's a laugh. And then come to find out months later, they had hacked into our phone and power. Is some spotted cow in your hand there someplace? no i had No, I just, you know, you're getting gear getting warmed up. Anyhow, yeah. they had so
00:12:13
Torben Rothgeb
The same guy offered to clean the garage and why my mom would have him clean the garage. Clean out the garage. clean out the garage. And shockingly, our two pedal cars were missing after that. Oh, my God. So that brought a little heartbreak. But then I was able to get over that by the bike thing. And that for my, you know, growing up in the early 80s, BMX bikes were everything. Right. And so they had a whole room full of that stuff, and watching some of the movies of that was really too. And being older, it was cool. They had the Stingrays, and Stingray bikes were cool. I remember having them those. They're worth a lot now, too. Oh, yeah. Yeah, all kinds of stuff there. They had a bunch of lunchboxes and stuff like that. Record albums.
00:12:56
Torben Rothgeb
Mm-hmm. And then the movies, they had all these car movies. Mm-hmm. So, you know, a lot of engine stuff. And it was real cool engines. There was the Mercedes engine that powered the 94 Penske, the car and just kinds of experimental stuff. Yeah, on off that you never see anywhere else. The Novi was really impressive. that The big yellow Novi guy. That was a Impressive car. A beast.

Plymouth and Racing History

00:13:19
Torben Rothgeb
Oh, God. When they had the Plymouth, I didn't realize that Plymouth had made some Indy engines. Yeah, they did an Indy. Everybody jumped on the wagon. Right. Yep. yeah Studebaker did the engines, too, at one point. And and what do they call it, a side-mounted Plymouth engine?
00:13:35
Torben Rothgeb
It was a V8.
00:13:39
Torben Rothgeb
um Because it was an STP car, but then it had the Plymouth things. It almost looked like a reverse Petty scheme because the Plymouth was in Petty Blue and the rest of the car was that familiar. You never know you know. Maybe after they get the Lotus 38 out there, right they'll have that. museum was ah was fantastic.
00:14:02
Torben Rothgeb
great And then getting to meet so many of those people. I just had fun hanging out, you know, with with Don Molitor from Wisconsin was there. And then Rod Mascu. Yeah, great guy.
00:14:18
Torben Rothgeb
Both nights we were able to hang out at the hotel lobby. sadly it was the second night till I discovered they had $8 Long Island iced teas and you know you've come on upon a really great deal when the bartender is making it and I'm watching and he puts all four shops in there full things and and then he brings me up it's $8 and then he says under his voice but I could hear

Funny Hotel Stories

00:14:44
Torben Rothgeb
he's like This is mispriced. Keep them coming. Are they easier? Are easier? More expensive. Oh, my gosh.
00:14:51
Torben Rothgeb
A regular rum and Coke in Minneapolis is probably $12 or $13. And that's got barely a shot of rum in it. Oh, my gosh. So when you're at the bar. $8. Keep them coming. When you're at the bar, where was Dana at this point? You know what? We did not see Dana those nights. Dana was riding with Ralph. That's a good question. I hadn't thought about that until just because Dana was there, but just saw him. Did he have his helmet on?
00:15:14
Torben Rothgeb
No. I know helmet. um But he was there with Ralph. There was a lot of people from Minnesota. Dan Deco was there. was great to see him. Catwood, Andy. Bob Hood. Bob Hood was there. I didn't know if he was there. I didn't see Kevin. didn't see Kevin. I'd never seen his belly tanker thing. He had that there? Yeah.
00:15:33
Torben Rothgeb
yeah And they took a picture of that. They did. Scale model enthusiast was there. And so ah that was nice model. Yeah, it was really cool.
00:15:45
Torben Rothgeb
Really cool. so Yeah, and then Terry Jesse was really nice. I was talking to him. Yeah, just going to have been there to see him. Always nice, just to say that the cowboy Cadillac. I think that's probably one of those cars that, like for me, not being in military stuff, it was one of the first weathered cars that I've seen.
00:16:03
Torben Rothgeb
He has an interesting thing going on

Model Building and Social Media

00:16:06
Torben Rothgeb
Facebook. I don't know if you follow him at all. But um one of the themes on Facebook was, you know, how many different models can you post in each day?
00:16:17
Torben Rothgeb
Like if you if you started, you know all the models you've built and you started putting them once a day on Facebook, how long would it be until you ran out? He's going like, I'm not making this up. He's up to like 70 80 different models. And they're all like different genres, weathered, detailed. I mean, he's a really good builder.
00:16:42
Torben Rothgeb
Just a really nice guy. I met him at Salt air at salt Lake. the time that I was there. Just a really he came right up a salty earth. Just so you're wonderful person. Great guy. Well, and you being an over-weathering snob could probably relate to this story. i was talking to my brother, and so I didn't realize that he was he was like a small he's a small town sheriff or something, right? A small town sheriff. Yes. so anyway let's just let me finish the story. You're just getting started, my man. Yes. Well, um so apparently at one point he had built this car, this cop car, and the the boss walks in or something and says, our cars have never been that dirty. Well, he he was a policeman too. i Yeah, that's what saying. So he had built this like i remember in the office and like somebody is working for or working with us. Our cars have never been that dirty. We would never let them get that bad. That's hilarious.
00:17:42
Torben Rothgeb
So, no, and and then it's funny, the presentation, I think, was that the first day where they're talking or a second day? Probably second day. what i a second yeah It would have been the second day, right? Because it's the last day.
00:17:54
Torben Rothgeb
Yeah, kudos to Randy Durr. He's a really good speaker. He was up there talking. Al Cosby was really a good speaker, too. Yeah, and he ah talked about, you know, the nuts and bolts of moving the museum from Utah and all the stuff that was related

Model Car History and Museums

00:18:10
Torben Rothgeb
that. And then Mark Gustafson got up and he talked. and We didn't get up. but yeah Well, he was up there. He was up there at the podium.
00:18:21
Torben Rothgeb
And I think... My biggest takeaway from his talking was he was just really ah happy that his words were that didn't go into a landfill. exactly. he was just really happy that a lot of this stuff was saved. It could easily be that way because, you know, I don't know if you were to have me talk about the history of that.
00:18:39
Torben Rothgeb
Yes, we'll get to it eventually. Oh, okay. Well, you know, time's a waste. But anyway. Well. And I don't know if it would go into a landfill, but certainly put away. Because i who was the dude? I went to about, I think I'll 1998, 90. I went to Chicago and there was a museum in Chicago. There was a model car museum. Yeah.
00:19:03
Torben Rothgeb
Who was the guy who started riding in Scale Auto and would do like old annuals and obscure kind of stuff? And he built a big diorama thing.
00:19:14
Torben Rothgeb
And then he built some box art cars. And Stoody? No, he did the, I remember he had the Buick ah GS, the custom version for Monogram that he had built. okay Okay. Anyway, he had a museum, but oh they had it. Dean Milano. Dean Milano. That was it. Oh, you're so good. Yes. Me. You're not ready for memory care yet. So, but no, I was blanking too. And I met the guy and went to the, you know, the closing of this museum. was a huge museum. so So yeah, it was really cool.
00:19:48
Torben Rothgeb
And so great scratch builder. and Yeah. Yeah. No, he had some really good stuff. so, um You know, so great that this museum can carry on. And it's one more thing that kind of puts our hobby on the map as well, you know.
00:20:05
Torben Rothgeb
Very cool. We were after the lunchboxes and the pedal cars, but hey, we're in there somewhere. So that's... That's great. And so, no, we had a lot of, it's it great weekend. And then the last day, it was a car show.
00:20:21
Torben Rothgeb
It was also 100 degrees. So it was, a I think it was, ah and I made a mistake. Well, and really after the car show, I was all right because we were in the car all day. But I'd run, I'd gone through all my clothes. So i was down in my jeans because I didn't have any more shorts left. And so we're walking around out there and it it was one of those days where it took about maybe five minutes and you're just covered in sweat. It was about 100 with the sun beating down on you. But all kinds of great cars there. I love that they had a 70 Challenger. i think it was B5 Blue.
00:20:54
Torben Rothgeb
ah I didn't get it approved by the holidays, but it was B5 Blue. a lot of great cars closing the outdoor like our show the outdoor car show and they had a lot of uh first gen camaros that were really cool they had it they had one uh 75 trans am oh uh that was cool it was blue you don't see a lot of them blue but uh and then uh andy uh was

Outdoor Car Show Experience

00:21:21
Torben Rothgeb
really impressed by this model k right and six cylinder model f-t
00:21:27
Torben Rothgeb
Apparently, it was a big ah big car that Henry Ford didn't like. So there weren't probably a lot of those that survived. But this one. so that was in the museum? No, it was in the car show. Outside. Yeah, a lot of good cars. It was it was so bad. These guys were eating donuts.
00:21:46
Torben Rothgeb
Their donuts were melting. Yeah.
00:21:52
Torben Rothgeb
wicketsnis the rasca You know, like it gets toasty. Yeah. The first two days were gorgeous weather. and somebody didn't sit they Very humid.
00:22:03
Torben Rothgeb
And we stopped at AK Collectibles. I had to talk these guys into it. They didn't want to go on the way down, but we were stopping anyway. Here he is. He's pushing our arms like, we're going to stop. there yeah over first It was correct. It was the right thing to do.

Exploring AK Collectibles

00:22:18
Torben Rothgeb
yeah Yeah. Well, um ah we spent about an hour there. um Cameron discovered the books. Actually recommended a book for me that I've been reading up on, learning some more history. You almost twisted your arm to it. Yes. did And I would have never heard about the Cooper Climax. So that's the one you're reading Yep. The 1959 winner. Can't put it down. Yeah.
00:22:41
Torben Rothgeb
can't put it and camera was nice enough to put a cover on it for me so it'll be preserved for many years so lot of a really cool cool place to go yeah yeah a lot of great kits and then he has a whole section of parts cars Uh-huh. Which is great.
00:22:56
Torben Rothgeb
Which, yeah, that's what I couldn't say no to a couple $10 bag kits. Really? They're monogrammed? Yeah. and It was like oh has almost all the parts in it. It's missing the tires, but I mean, who cares? has two bodies in The fall burpee special? I'll give you $15 for this. Yeah. And I even found... a 43rd, 1 43rd scale starter, Cobra Daytona for $30. As did I. I can't say no to a starter that I don't have. Oh, so you got a Daytona Coupe too?
00:23:31
Torben Rothgeb
No, I have all those. i don't think they The only one I don't have the purple one, but i don't think they ever did the Charlie Glotzbach one. so um But i did I did get a 60 Chevy Buck Baker. Oh, cool. Thor-sponsored car.

Starter Model Cars and Collectors

00:23:50
Torben Rothgeb
I don't think it ever won any big races, but I think they did the 61 because they were doing the
00:23:57
Torben Rothgeb
They were doing the Junior Johnson Daytona winner. one The 60. I mean, I think their goal was to build every Daytona 500 winner and every Winston Cup champion or every NASCAR champion.
00:24:11
Torben Rothgeb
And so then they would make the molds, but then they would want to do other cars to make it worthwhile. And this is one of the other cars I think they did just to do it. yeah you were Behind the counter, he had all the high-priced annual ones. high-priced stuff, yeah.
00:24:27
Torben Rothgeb
We managed to keep it cheap. I bought a couple $10 bag kits, Rebell Funny Cars, um the Willie Borscht Charger, and then the other one didn't have decals, but it's one of those either Dodge Demon, Plymouth Duster Funny Cars. Right. and then Although it's funny, looking at the Ram Charger one, the Ram Charger has ah like the 3D front on it, like the monogram duster. a different year. But the Revelle just has a flat one and you you paint the grill on.
00:25:00
Torben Rothgeb
The grill is decal or whatever else. So that was interesting because... To me, the body looked more like the Revell ones, but then the front looked like the 3D monogram duster.
00:25:12
Torben Rothgeb
i mean, you can think of the Mongoose or the Cop one. But it's an interesting combination. But I got one of those, and then I got a 64 Plymouth um Petty stock car.
00:25:24
Torben Rothgeb
I always to use those for parts because the last time I went to Nebraska, i got two resin bodies. So it was Joanne? 71 and a

Petty Stock Car Models

00:25:32
Torben Rothgeb
61 and a 62. No, this is it was a Lindbergh, but it has a racing parts in because I had resin bodies for the 62 and 63 Plymouth Petty cars. Cool. so Pretty good plug and and play. And then the one other one that I got was the $10 resin body for the Kyle kyle Busch M&M's car. And I was able to find ah wind scale decals. Have you guys ever used any wind scale decals? Wind scale or wind dixie?
00:26:02
Torben Rothgeb
No, it's Winscow. I thought it was Winscow. That's a maker. Well, okay. Winscow. Winscow is what think it is. Okay. um You say tomato, I say tomato. Yeah, um they look like they might be Alps type things, but we'll see. We'll see once it gets on there. I get enough of that. but Yes.

Trip Reflection and Content Creation

00:26:24
Torben Rothgeb
Yeah. um So, no, that that was the ah Nebraska trip. that was was ah It was great. It was great. uh great to see everybody talk to some people now i had i was trying to uh you know promote our wonderful podcast it was kind of funny there's a couple different things because i i was able to meet uh tim uh kalankiewicz because the last day we were trying to pack up fast and then this guy comes over and he's like this guy's starting a magazine or to come meet him and so i'm like so i take one of our chips so we got a tiny car podcast and then I give that to Tim, real nice guy. And he he looks at it and says, and then he says, ah yeah, I'll i'll ah show you some of my magazines.
00:27:05
Torben Rothgeb
And so then I'm looking at him. I'm trying to think of which ones I have, which one I don't. But, you he lays five of them out there. So I put them under my arm. It's like, well, that's cool. You know, as a content provider, I'm getting some swag. And so then I'm about to walk out. here Yeah, they're $10 a piece. So I kind of.
00:27:23
Torben Rothgeb
Put them back down, and I kind of look at, well, all right, I can buy a couple. Give them a 20. So then, you know, and then ah the other guy i talked to about the podcast, Mark Batson, because, you know, he's been doing that content provider one, and Cameron was with me, you know. So then I'm talking to him, you know, and um did you guys ever see the movie Hustle and Flow?
00:27:48
Torben Rothgeb
Yep. Oh, great, great movie. But for those of you who haven't, it's It's about this guy who's a pimp. um But he's not the kind of pimp that's living high on the hog. you know He's not wearing fur jackets or hats or driving a new Cadillac. you know He's driving this old Caprice Classic. And he's only got a a couple girls that are working for him, that are employed by him. Family content is just waiting for the floor.
00:28:14
Torben Rothgeb
And they're the kind of girls that will be dancing at BJ's. Here we go. He's still going. I can't stop. Anyway, so basically, well, the point is he's struggling. He's struggling to get by and make it.
00:28:25
Torben Rothgeb
I'm struggling. Well, yes. Well, bear with me. bear with i' get I'll make the connection here. You just got to bear with me. you had me Don't hit fast forward. um
00:28:37
Torben Rothgeb
Yeah, well, that that was kind of a small-time exotic dancing place. I only ever went there on a bachelor party. here I don't want people to think that this is the kind of thing I normally do. It was a bachelor party on my hair. It wasn't super impressive.
00:28:53
Torben Rothgeb
Anyway, so So anyway, this guy is is struggling to get by. and ah he But he has and he has so his kid has this little piano, and he starts playing and writing his own rap songs. And so he's trying to get by in the rap business, right? So he's he's trying to make it like our we're trying to make it with our podcast. you know It's kind of parallel. This is the analogy. Yeah, okay. so And he went to high school with Skinny B, and Skinny B was his popular rapper. And Skinny B's got a concert, and he's going to be coming back to the barbecue place in town.
00:29:27
Torben Rothgeb
And so our main character has this, he's a pretty famous actor. Terrence Howard. Terrence Howard. He's a man. Man. What's up, man? He's always saying that. We're losing this as we speak. So anyway, it's his dream. If he can just meet this guy and give him his demo tape, right?
00:29:48
Torben Rothgeb
a Skinny B. And then he also has ah the family. We're past the family thing. he He's going to give him some weed, too. i'm So he's telling him, well, give Skinny B some weed, and he meets him. But they hit it off, and they're really ah they're really hitting it off, talking about the old times and stuff like that.
00:30:07
Torben Rothgeb
he seems to really like this bag of weed that he gives him a stuff and stuff. What time is that? So then he gives him this demo tape and he's feeling really good about this. Right. And so, uh, skinny B gives it to him and then he, he has to go to the bathroom and he's just sitting here with a shitting grin. He's, you know, finally he's turned the corner in his life. Right. Maybe all of the struggles of, of being an up and coming pimp and, and all the problems that he's had in his life are gonna, yes, are are gonna finally make it through, you know? And so he, shake and skinny B comes back, he shakes hands. And he's walking out on a cloud, but he's got to go to the bathroom too. So he decides to go to the bathroom on his way out.
00:30:50
Torben Rothgeb
What does he see in the urinal? It's the the tape. Skinny B had thrown the tape in the thing. And so... I got to be honest, when i Mark Batson didn't look super impressed, and I had visions of building this car for the content provider. I had pictures of maybe Mark throwing it in a yard. That's what the story led to?
00:31:17
Torben Rothgeb
But no, I'm sure Mark was just, you know, he'd kind of probably been over visited. What was your take on it? He didn't sound super jacked up about this, did he? So this is your van that you're going to build? Yeah, well, I told him, yeah, I'm working on something for the content provider. We do the Tiny Car Podcast. And Cameron can vouch for me. He seemed very like, oh, great.
00:31:40
Torben Rothgeb
He said, can't thank you for the time. But no, i Mark's a good guy. He would never throw our stuff in a urinal like Skinny B did. but um but you Hey, let's move on. yeah Moving

Street Machine Nationals

00:31:52
Torben Rothgeb
on. Moving on.
00:31:53
Torben Rothgeb
um So moving on to the Street Machine Nationals. Jim, our very own correspondent, was there and impressed by the Street Machine. Tell tell us about your experience. I was very impressed,

Jim's Nationals Experience

00:32:05
Torben Rothgeb
actually. it's um It's one of those shows that's been kind of reinvented a few times. It was the Car Craft Street Machine Nationals originally. And...
00:32:15
Torben Rothgeb
and Anyway, um being that it's, i don't know how many years they've been having at the fairgrounds, it's a place to go. It's something to do. you know, it's summertime.
00:32:27
Torben Rothgeb
My brother has a really nice 70 GTO, and he was going to go. So I said, well, hey, can I ride with And he's like, sure. So um the interesting thing about that show is that when you go get in line to go get into the show, you have to get in line with all the other you know, people that are entering their cars. And it's...
00:32:51
Torben Rothgeb
It's interesting because it takes a long time to get through the registration, even though you already have all your information that you paid for, you know, all your entry fees, blah, blah. You have to wait and wait and wait until like, you know, nine o'clock. It's like you're there at like six. Oh, my God. But anyway, um so moving ahead, though, you know, it was it was it was a great show. I was really impressed with the quality of street cars some really rare Mopars really nice 70 Super B sublime you know but numbers matching you know the um ah colored wheels and stuff you know it was just really well done some really interesting Porsches all different genres of cars
00:33:41
Torben Rothgeb
the only The only downside, it was, of course, really hot. And it kind of took its toll on me. I ended up leaving early because I was just, it was just overwhelming.
00:33:51
Torben Rothgeb
And, you know, you can't do it all. So, but no, it's a great show. I would recommend it. I'm sure they're going to be back next year. i think the one in Duquesne, they actually, they stopped that event. It's not running anymore. That's too bad. Cause that was the first real big car show I went to. I went there in 1994. Okay. Duquesne, Illinois. But, but yeah, some really nice stuff. We had a great time and you know,
00:34:18
Torben Rothgeb
Like I said, it's something to do. Now, what was the last year they called it the Car Craft Nationals? I'm thinking it was probably in maybe in the 90s, something like that.
00:34:30
Torben Rothgeb
it's It's gotten to be, and what's kind of evolved, it was for a while there was a lot of pickup trucks and a lot of new lana like Mustangs and things like that to people. Anybody can bring anything really there's no but like you can't bring like a 1925 model t yeah you can bring there's anything there because i went there on sunday there's some there's some really nice street rods there and there's some hot rods 50s cars oh okay okay i mean i could have driven my 2009 charger or a chevy well i could have the 2009 dodge charger too i mean people brought their oh like everyday driver stuff there too but um but yeah no it's yeah
00:35:10
Torben Rothgeb
Unfortunately, i missed the meeting, but you know you guys filled in for me. so we We made it somehow. it wasn't yeah was I don't want to do it again, Jim. yeah hopefully ah would Twist my arm. I always remember my favorite thing in car craft was the Milestone Muscle Cars. Do you remember that series that they ran? yeah and Then they'd have a little picture.
00:35:32
Torben Rothgeb
to i used to hang those on my wall. and they also have a really They actually had it there this year, but you can put your car in the dyno. Mm-hmm. Oh, yeah. And it's great because some of the stuff you see that goes up on the dyno, it's like...
00:35:47
Torben Rothgeb
It's it's yeah it's so's really really nice stuff. i mean no Sleeper, 64 Chevelle, bench seats like a grandma car, but it's got this LT1 motor that's yeah built to bail. They're revving it up, you know six, seven you know grand. It's like, stand back. Stand back, stand Thank you. I'm sorry, God. anyway so yeah so i' I'd recommend it next year. you know I'm sure it's going to be back.
00:36:17
Torben Rothgeb
But, you know, depending on if we have time, you know, like everything else. So, yeah. Oh, great. Great. Yeah. Um, well, and going back to, uh, the model car museum, we were going to cover for that for our okay history section. Uh, and, uh, Jim knows more about it, uh, than I do, but certainly Cameron or, um, I don't know. I don't know a lot. I mean, there isn't a lot to really tell, but, um, you know, Salt Lake was a staple in the, you know, contest world for, you know, decades.

Evolution of Model Car Museum

00:36:48
Torben Rothgeb
And, uh,
00:36:50
Torben Rothgeb
Somewhere, and I'm not sure what year it actually took place, but they decided to create this museum. And they didn't really know how big it was going to get. So they ended up renting a storage garage.
00:37:04
Torben Rothgeb
Right, not that far from, you know, where the contest was held. And that's kind of where it started. And people would donate, you know, three in one parts, you know, like the the there thick trees, yeah, parts, packs and things and anything rare that they wanted to donate. And of course, that just evolved into something that, you know, they didn't have enough room for. So they...
00:37:31
Torben Rothgeb
expanded it as much as they could, but it eventually it just got so big that they had to start, you know, selling some of the stuff that wasn't maybe that rare or to didn't fit with the genre that they're trying to, you know, project. But tom anyway, so when it came time for this museum, this model car museum,
00:37:53
Torben Rothgeb
Um, that's kind of where that, all that stuff ended up going from there to, you know, to Lincoln and, uh, you know, now they've got just endless amount of room for whatever they want to put in there, including, you know, people donating their car collection.
00:38:11
Torben Rothgeb
Um, you know, the, the, um, I'm not my, the name escapes me now. The, um, collection that tim tim helped restore uh the richard carroll collection which which was really well done and well well received there's a lot of work involved in that yep now you're talking about stuff that's never there's no aftermarket parts it's all scratch built including yeah the engines and all the suspension and all that so to re rebuild those into what they once were
00:38:43
Torben Rothgeb
I can't say it enough. it's It's a labor of love. And to crank those out in the short time that they had in Florida, they were in Florida. And there's a gentleman that Bob, i can i can't remember his last name. He's a really, really great builder. He actually was at Salt Lake.
00:39:01
Torben Rothgeb
He actually posts on our Facebook group. He builds a lot of replica stock models. He was at Bob Jerrigan. That's him. what his models were he built us His models are incredible.
00:39:14
Torben Rothgeb
He posts on our Facebook group. I don't know where he lives. i don't think he lives in Twin Cities. No, he doesn't. But he loves our Facebook group. My God, his models were so good. Yeah, he's mean, you could start them up. No, you could start them up.
00:39:27
Torben Rothgeb
Yeah, I mean, ah yeah opening doors, opening glove box. They were Moses Pontiacs. Oh, yeah, and they're really, really tasty. I mean, well done.
00:39:39
Torben Rothgeb
But anyway, so But i think I think, you know, in speaking about the museum, I think that if they keep it going, I think it's going to be well received and that other people can can enjoy it as well.
00:39:52
Torben Rothgeb
Yeah, it's great for the hobby because I've always said, you you know, you've got car people. They're ah halfway there. yeah um And so if you get the car people going in this Museum of Speed And then to see, you know, because so many builders that come back into the hobby are like, I never knew there was all this different stuff.
00:40:10
Torben Rothgeb
one I mean, it's centrally located. It's right it's a great you know way to get there. I mean it's not it's it's anywhere, you you know. most areas in the country. So yeah. And it was, you know, it was usually the way they they had did it. It was intriguing how on the second floor, you're in the first one, you look up and you see the big T. So they have the real big T and then they have a stand with the model of the big T and then they have the that's the little t little T, sorry. Yeah. Like you. Yeah. they had a little t Well, and they made some big tester. test life size Oh, else yeah. And, you know, they had a box, the box of the model and
00:40:48
Torben Rothgeb
I was happy to see something like Augie Hiscano stuff. I mean, I was blown away by how, I mean, that's just amazing work. And Dave Barry's McLaren im sixteen you know, the old brass McLaren. Yeah, I got to see that at ah couldnna at Toledo when he finished that. This was back in the 80s. And if you ever got a chance to meet him, i'm just one of the nicest guys you'd ever meet. yeah And Randy Durst stuff. I mean, just to see that stuff is. Oh, yeah. That that Camaro. Oh, yeah. and Yeah.
00:41:17
Torben Rothgeb
That's my that's my favorite. yeah Right. just I like the Camaro because it's a pretty, you know, it's like a production car. Right. And I mean, it's A.J. Ford's sprinter. Yes, his sprint car and he and his A.J. stock car, too. Oh, yeah, I know. They're just all the same. And just a you know wonderful person. Yep, great guy. yeah Very respectful and yeah very kind. Very open. We were standing there looking at his models, and he sticks his head in.
00:41:46
Torben Rothgeb
just just as yeah pleasant as good yeah yeah absolutely he's one of those who would say what did you bring exactly and there isn't that many like that he came over when i was at

Inspiration from Museum Visits

00:41:56
Torben Rothgeb
myself i love your 43rds thank you i said you know yeah and i was really impressed with his speaking you know because there's a lot of people in there and he did a really good job he said right out the bed he goes How many of you have 12 projects that you're going to start as soon as you get home from the show? And that's the kind of stuff that you want to hear. That's what we talked about on the way home.
00:42:17
Torben Rothgeb
Oh, yeah. Well, and going back to Richard Carroll, a new friend of the show, Tim Kalankiewicz, in his ah magazine Scale Model Enthusiasts, which I got for only $10. He has... ah The epipos ah issue number two and three cover Richard Carroll's builds.
00:42:37
Torben Rothgeb
um If you want to get a better look theyre were wild at those. just wild You know, I'm going to butcher the heck out of this guy's name. Probably worse than Offenheiser. Offenheiser. Offenheiser. Flon, who, the guy, ah it was a yeah is a black guy, Flonzie, he built a lot of. Fonzel Brom.
00:42:59
Torben Rothgeb
his His paint jobs were phenomenal. He was great. Great for paint jobs. And talking to him. was there? Yeah, he was there. And he is using, uh.
00:43:10
Torben Rothgeb
Jason Blenden things from a a body shop. I guess they have that for special blending paints that have been chipped or cracked. But that's what he said he uses. And it's one of those ah auto body things. um Blending stuff, and it's four parts blending, then one part hardener, and one part... So it's the type of paint that he he uses? Yeah, that's the kind of paint. Or clear. That's the kind of clear that he uses. And I'd never heard of blending, um for you but it's ah nascent with an N. Nascent blending. um And he talked about using that. And then also talking with Rod Maskew, he uses a door jam clear, yeah which is also a thing. I'm always, you know, anytime you see these guys with phenomenal jobs, you want to ask
00:44:03
Torben Rothgeb
what uh what they used what is door jam clear i guess on a car you know how the door jam i guess when they're painting the cars somehow the door jams don't get clear because the doors close when they clear it so then they do separate so it doesn't stand out as being flat they just spray it with a can and ah evidently that's what rod mascu uses just for that um so that was interesting um All right. Yeah. And, you know, think a lot of people over the years have asked what NNL stands for.
00:44:38
Torben Rothgeb
And, you know, um Mark Gustafson was the one who coined the phrase, a nameless national luminaries, NNL, you know, because his first contest was, ah you know, absent were many of the nameless national luminaries. And so then with the Toledo show, that was the NNL. And from there on,
00:44:59
Torben Rothgeb
and you know But his contest then kind of, was it just overflow from the Salt Lake show that he put into the museum or was that a separate thing Gustafson decided to start when he started the the model car museum? no lord No, I don't think so. I think you know i think it was it was always supposed to be that way.
00:45:20
Torben Rothgeb
you know i mean he just He wanted everybody attend. He wanted them to enter the contest. so i mean... It all worked out, you know. Yeah, it's great that it has a home. Yeah. All right, moving on to new releases. ah We did talk about the 72 Chevy Short Box last time, but I saw one of those built up, and that really does look cool. Doesn't it? I mean, i you know, I built the long box and was like, oh, okay, wow, they're doing a you know, a modified reissue, but, uh, it really looks good with the short box on. I saw a couple of built-ups from that. It's going to sound like crazy too. Yeah. I, you know, unfortunately by the time Mobius gets out with their Chevy pickups, uh, you know, they'll still buy them cause Mobius does great stuff, who but, uh, you know, um,
00:46:07
Torben Rothgeb
But then what else we got for new releases? The Unreal Roller, um which is, do you know the origins of that? It's a Tom Daniel original kit, but that this one is different because it's in a...
00:46:22
Torben Rothgeb
250th anniversary. right just just It's a different decal sheet, basically. yeah So you can celebrate the 250-year anniversary. And they have a couple of those where the 2021 Charger has the decals. And then they have this ah new, ah the the modified Mustang that we all built ah that comes with the Louisville race hauler yeah that was in like... ah It was originally like, was ah the Petty Hauler, was that the first one that had that? And then they had a Budweiser Mustang and then a Thunder.
00:46:56
Torben Rothgeb
and It came with a Mud Racer, Tennessee. The Petty Hauler, though, was originally had the... Louisville. Right. it was but it was ah It was a Louisville, but one um when... What's his name?
00:47:11
Torben Rothgeb
What's the father's name? Lee Petty was very upset. Lee Petty was upset because it was a Ford and it wasn't a Mopar. It was the flat-nosed one, right? No. It was the same one. and they basically he just said so He said, stop.
00:47:26
Torben Rothgeb
You can't do this. Oh wow. And so it for while it was so very rare kit. It was very rare because it wasn't out for more than like a month. Oh my god. It was really upsetting. My brother had one too. And talk about the more heartache like the pedal cars. A lot fighting going on. The pedal car heartache. at some point, I don't remember my mom throwing away a lot of stuff, but she did throw away that all he had was the box. No, he didn't have the box. He just had the big wheels that came with the kit.
00:47:53
Torben Rothgeb
And then the back of the thing to remind us that, that he had had that kit one time. Um, but like many kids, you open up the box and it's just like a bunch of plastic and you're like, how the hell am I going to build this? And so, um, but they reissued that a while back. Uh, um,
00:48:12
Torben Rothgeb
So anyway, so they have that, and then they have the Fireberg Funny Car, you know other 250 Birthday of America cars that are all red, white, and blue.
00:48:24
Torben Rothgeb
um Other than that, have you seen the Pure Hell 116 Funny Car out? I haven't seen it. it's You can order it. I mean, it's it's supposed to be out, but I haven't seen it. Is it Natuli? No. No.
00:48:37
Torben Rothgeb
yeah it's It's never been issued, though, as as a kit and as the Pure Hell car. If you remember one that Jay built, Jay Lewis built a really nice one, and he painted the base, too, along with Pure Hell? Yeah.
00:48:51
Torben Rothgeb
yeah yeah So it's like that, only this is 116th. Jay Lewis did all 125th ones. Purple with a yellow flame job. Drew Highwater did one on the cover, too, a scale auto. That was really nice. Yeah, it's a really cool-looking car. Looking forward to that one. El 79 GMC ah is is goingnna be out um Probably more of our MCCM guys would probably more likely to buy it. is El Jefe? What is that about? It means boss in Spanish. Oh, that's nice to know. My brother calls his wife El Jefe. And he's right. No, just kidding, Jason. Wow. Nothing personal. Yes.
00:49:33
Torben Rothgeb
Too late. Actually, it cracked me up. He was riding not to the shore but somewhere else on vacation. And he said his whole family had listened to an hour of our podcast. Oh, no! I was like, wow. Imagining my sister-in-law and my nieces listening to this for an hour. is your brother? I was i was proud of him. Wow, you got an hour of it from That's impressive.
00:49:59
Torben Rothgeb
Wow. He might be the first woman that ever listened to this. Oh, my God. And the last. You're in the last. You're stuck in the car. Yeah. My daughter will say, you know, every once a while, Dad, I miss you enough that I'll put your podcast on. Not for very long, just to hear your voice. Until you start talking about hustle and flow. Yes. Turn it off. That's your bedtime.
00:50:25
Torben Rothgeb
So, no, and then also ah the Mitsubishi Tiltabed 82 truck. it It's funny. They released all these little early 80s pickups lately. Well, just the pickups in general. Yeah. Mulderland. Chevy Love. Mulder put them out.
00:50:41
Torben Rothgeb
yeah Yeah. Well, and then we got some decals from Mike's. ah Three different things from 1995. The number eight, Robesto's Brakes. Jeff Burton drove that one. Number 29, Scooby-Doo.
00:50:55
Torben Rothgeb
one And number 42, Coors Light 95 Pontiac, was Kyle Petty car. They also have the Skull number 55, which is a Benny Parson Regal. A number five, Levi Garrett. It was a Ricky Rudd car. And a number one, Steve Park, 2000-2001 Pennzoil car. So maybe Bob can get that and mess up another Pennzoil paint scheme. I knew could get to mess another Pennzoil paint scheme. All right. Well, and then the Salvino's report. Yeah.
00:51:27
Torben Rothgeb
they are really backed up on the Chevy molds. I'm feeling a little frustrated. They went with a U.S. manufacturer and it has not gotten the results that they wanted. So they're actually, um I don't know if they're to it Chevy, but with any more new molds, I think they're going to go back to China um for their molds. So that has stopped them on the new Chevy and ah and they've,
00:51:54
Torben Rothgeb
According to them are done with the Ford. So they did the last five Fords um with the Dark Horse Mustang. You know, they did the red and white Joey Logano. They did the number two Sendrick PP&G one. They did the number 12 discount tire. They did the Throwback Woods Brothers, and then they did the Castro Brad Kozlowski Mustangs. um My question to them was, if you if you know the Chevy's not going to be out, why don't you do a few more Fords? They've been doing really low runs. Oh, and then she forgot the Jimmy Clark Throwback. Well, that was last year, but yeah. Yeah, but that was one of them, though. Yeah, and last year they did the they also did the Joey Logano Championship car right and that one as well. So, um, uh, I would get on these, uh, you know, as somebody who saw, uh, the Red Bull Van Ginsberg in a car go for $60, uh, on eBay. Um, a lot of the Salvinos cars are out there, but I think these, uh, dark horse Fords are, know, they're going to be hard to find. And so even though, uh, you know, early two thousands, people aren't building a lot of those cars, ah The Mopars, ah the Dodges of that era, NASCAR, go for a lot of money. So whenever there is a race car and you can't build it and there's very few of them out there, if you like those Fords, I would get on it. And i did check Model Roundup, and they still have a few out there. So so get on those. It's ah unfortunate. ah The Ryan Blaney discount tire car, the number 12, I wish he would have driven the PP&G. Right.
00:53:35
Torben Rothgeb
Because that's a really cool paint scheme. And speaking of something, they're also so supposedly doing that IndyCar. they They wanted to do the the um you know but Joseph Newgarden.
00:53:48
Torben Rothgeb
PPG. PPG. Yeah, PPG. Okay. But you would need the road course one for that because, you know, the kit comes with the IndyCar. And they never rent they always run the shell our paint scheme for Indy.
00:54:02
Torben Rothgeb
Also, Salvino's have three other Indy kits coming out now. Malukas, the Sato, and the Alex Pillow pole winning car are out. Is the Sato car the winner from 2020? Yeah.
00:54:19
Torben Rothgeb
that twenty dated yeah yeah yeah okay And then that's out now, too. yeah Yeah. So those are out now, and they got a a few others that they're working on. The Pennzoil one. yeah Who drove that? McLaughlin. McLaughlin. And they're doing that one eventually.
00:54:37
Torben Rothgeb
um is still ah They are going to eventually get out the the winner this year, um but there you might have to do your own little decal. There was a couple little decals that were- Felix Rosenquist. Oh, that's right, because they lost a sponsor. There was some sponsor.
00:54:55
Torben Rothgeb
yeah infringement or something yep yep so but i think it's only a small decal okay so um you know probably wouldn't even be missed if they could probably get what's his name from indy cows to do the michael yeah right yeah just the sponsors he probably already has them yeah and uh you know well both uh both rick salvino and uh jim rogers had surgery this past week So that's kind of slowed them down.
00:55:23
Torben Rothgeb
um But they are, apparently they have all of the stuff for the Lotus 38, and it's just a matter of sending it out. Yeah. Well, it's three of us here. Three out of four have them. yeah so right Well, we've ordered them. We don't have them. Yes. But now i'm waiting right Rick did point out that not one single person has canceled their order.
00:55:46
Torben Rothgeb
That's good. So that is that is good. That should be adding pressure to them to finally yeah resolve whatever is holding on. Or that they're still waiting.
00:55:57
Torben Rothgeb
Yes. you yeah I mean, realistically, it was supposed to be first quarter of 26. Right. We're into you know August here in another day and a half. Yeah. so yeah and that is And people have complained, and they have a right to complain. you know They're fronting a lot of money for Salpinos. If you've ordered this, if you've ordered the Rosenquist one, um if you've ordered the Sato one, um somebody at this table has, not saying who. But it's not a cheap model.
00:56:30
Torben Rothgeb
Yeah. Um, I look quiet or Leah just went by, but essentially when I add that up, you know, so I, you know, one's 200, you're fronting them $400 and they have always made good on stuff, even stuff that's been delivered and not shown up at my doorstep. They've resented. So they've always made good on stuff, but it is while to have money out there and nothing to show for it. But I'm hoping about a month ago, little over a month ago,
00:57:00
Torben Rothgeb
I ordered and received within a couple of weeks the 20 scale IndyCar driver figure. for it for the IndyCar kits and road course wings and aero package. So they're getting some of those out. Well, and I i will say, and, you know, it's ah it's a little frustrating, but they do make make it right.
00:57:30
Torben Rothgeb
and they've never contested like you said i've had two kit well i've had yeah two kits that were not delivered uh but they they haven't asked any questions they've just sent another one to me um and then doug mitchell uh handles the uh problems as far as i i've heard anytime somebody says a windshield is broken or this is warped or whatever they send it out so they do have a good customer service when it comes to that and You know, like I've always said, i'm I'm always rooting for the company because it's nice perhaps to have current stuff out there. time And then hopefully with this multimedia thing, um it would be nice, you know, because they talked about a lot of possible cars coming out. So, you know, hopefully Rick gets back on his feet with his 3D knee now. He had...
00:58:20
Torben Rothgeb
And it recovers. It real funny the other night because, yeah, he was, you could tell he was looped up on painkillers. But, you know, he, but still, even with that, ah Rick, on those shows that they do, he he carries the show. oh yeah Because ah the last, this last Saturday one, Rick wasn't there. And they had Doug Mitchell, and then they had Jim Rogers, and then they had Luca.
00:58:47
Torben Rothgeb
And, you know, they were kind of just sitting around staring at each other. It's like you really saw how much talking, how Rick carries the show most of the time. If he's not talking about kids, he's talking about racing and stuff like that. and loca needs a shave.
00:59:01
Torben Rothgeb
Yes. Yeah. no badly Well, it's funny because Luca was working on a summer 48-hour challenge, you know. oh yeah that's right so uh you know he thought he he would do a starter kit because those are uh you know less you know less work right yeah um but uh and i could see this coming a mile away uh the decals but in fairness because he actually built uh like a mid-80s petty car right right so it was this one it was uh
00:59:37
Torben Rothgeb
Like 84. 2 plus 2 or whatever. Well, this is a Grand Prix, the 200 wind car-like thing. um And, ah you know, maybe originally you could use the rocket red decals, but at this point, you would really want to paint the vermilion on this. Which you right? And then just use the dividing lines. But he was trying to use ah the decal, especially over the back. Mm-hmm. And the front of the car. that's kind of i mean, at how old these decals are, I'm just happy to get them on going flat. you know um so The numbers look good on them.
01:00:15
Torben Rothgeb
They were great decals. They were cartergra they were one of the first you know companies to be using cartograph back then. So they had great decals back in the day. So, but that tripped him up. I don't know if he's going to end up finishing that. Well, it's past the 48 hours. Yeah. So Luca did not. It's too bad people can't see us on the podcast because Torben's got a great collection of 43rd scale. They're really nice. And it's still growing. It's growing. It is. It it is. yeah Well, I'm, you know, I use that for a backup plan, you know, like, ah and, and,
01:00:48
Torben Rothgeb
It helps with it. Well, you know, talking about why we just move into what's on the bench. Because so sure that's what I've been working on now and getting ready for nationals. And so um and I'm trying to do this for looking at different categories. They have a category for like a narrative or that tells a story. Right. Right. And so I wanted to tell the story of the Arrow Wars, you know. And you're Hemingway. You could do a good job. Well, yeah thanks. um
01:01:21
Torben Rothgeb
But I wanted to do, if I couldn't get the 125th scale car done, I'd have the 143rd one to fall back on. Yeah, that's great idea. And so that's what I'm going have to do because this K&K insurance car not going to be done, but I have the 43rd one.
01:01:34
Torben Rothgeb
um I'm getting the 125th Buddy Baker card done, so I'm probably not going to finish the 143rd one. forty third one Oh, okay. Not yet, anyway. Not yet. um And then I have... Didn't I get to the... um the ah number 40 Superbird.
01:01:54
Torben Rothgeb
Pete Hamilton? Pete Hamilton one. But i do I will get the starter one done. oh start one And same with the Leroy Yarborough. I have to get that done. So I'm working on those ah for ah for a week from today. I'm down to a week. It's time to start thrashing for those. yeah um But then... ah Then looking at the other categories for nationals, IPM nationals in Fort Wayne, Indiana, they have red, white, and blue. I'll probably take the Bobby Allison card for that. They have an older kit.
01:02:31
Torben Rothgeb
ah Yeah, that's right. I'm gonna do i' just going to bring the Mark Donahue javelin. I'm just going to bring the box with it. that That'll show you how old the kid is. Yeah, that's a good idea. Have the box in the background.
01:02:44
Torben Rothgeb
Are you doing the Arrow Wars one? Are you doing it for the collections are you doing it for the documented replica or there is that other category? The narrative The narrative Okay, see. I'm going to that for narrative one. Okay. And then I'm going to do the collections. I'm going to do the petty cars. Okay.
01:03:03
Torben Rothgeb
okay So, you know, I think what I'm really doing is i'm I'm doing the Jim Allen strategy. you know But if I get skunked, I will still continue to bring stuff. You know what? I'm i'm trying to He's going to flood the tables, baby.
01:03:22
Torben Rothgeb
Well, another ah another great movie, Superbad. Did you ever see that? Yeah, that's really funny. You didn't see that camera? That's shocking haven't seen that. I thought that would be in your library. anyway Anyway, it's your basic sophomoric type of teenage drinking, going to a party movie.
01:03:40
Torben Rothgeb
Anyway. um Is it Siskel and Ebert today? I know, I know. Are going to talk about the moral the story and the Sultana of the No, just a quote from the movie. Okay. sell it john And you know who the guy is?
01:03:54
Torben Rothgeb
He's a little bit like Seth Rogen, but not really Seth Rogen. He's so what was... ah ah He's played a lot movies. big jovial guy. He's a pretty famous actor. You'd recognize him. Jonah Hill. Jonah Hill. Great. Thank you, Cameron. So Jonah Hill is talking about going to this party, right? And Jonah Hill is like, you know how those girls say, oh, my God, I can't believe i was with that guy, you know, right? i can't i and And then he says, well, tonight I want to be that guy. I want to be that one, you know? And so you know how people talk about these contests. Oh, that car, that bugaboo shouldn't have won.
01:04:30
Torben Rothgeb
Hopefully I bring enough of these cars. and you well Maybe i'll be I'll be one of these cars that wins. That's so right. I bring everything in there. so right Anyway, that's what I think I covered all the categories.
01:04:43
Torben Rothgeb
I'm going to bring back the ah big ah big charger. Okay. A Buddy Baker charger, 116th. And then a couple of... I think I'm to bring my two starters, just the Earnhardt and the Gordon ones. you know Cameron and I will be judging. We'll be the car judges. Oh, okay. All right. I'm trying not to influence you guys. And if you do need to step out. here anything area yeah i mean Unlike us on people, if you want to step out and have somebody else judge. Oh, know I know.
01:05:16
Torben Rothgeb
What do they call that when people know each other? Nepotism. anyways so that's family stuff. but Well, what am I saying? When people have to recuse themselves. Right, yeah. Conflict of interest.
01:05:29
Torben Rothgeb
If you feel like you have a conflict of interest. No, I mean never. No, I just... know it's not It's not like you're judging your son's car or something like that. No, wow okay we i yeah okay Touch them all. carbon Reach out and touch them all. the other other thing about the nation that's going to be fun is that we're going to go to the Indy Museum on Saturday. So it'll be really fun.
01:05:57
Torben Rothgeb
I'm looking forward to that. Judging will be over by then. Judging will be over by then. Saturday morning, I can sipping a latte and enjoying my ride to the museum. I'm really looking forward to that. It'll be really fun. You'll have a great time. It's a cool museum. I remember, like I said, 30 years ago. Sad how fast the time goes. But I do remember even back then, they had a lot of 125th. I don't know. I thought some of them were models.
01:06:23
Torben Rothgeb
My brother was die cast. But I know Don Molitor built some for those. well He was talking about that. is so it was there was a when i the original For the original museum. The Indie Museum. Because in 2004 when I was there with Mark Aege, there was a bunch of Indie cars that had been built. and they will enough in a case In a case. So that was cool.
01:06:44
Torben Rothgeb
yeah you know so So now you're just bringing armor and 143rds? I'm bringing... um and bringing some armor pieces and some airplanes, and then I'm going to I'm going to bring my 43rd five or six 40 thirds for the Tiger meet. So the Tiger meet is the newer thing that's taken place now. It's a non judged thing and great bill. John today is going to be there. He's a great 43rd skill builder. Nice guy. to and Great guy. And he's going to run the Tiger meet.
01:07:12
Torben Rothgeb
So that's going to have so there'll be a bunch of different clubs that are done. They're like in Madison, there was a 48 scale armor. group which is kind of pushed aside by the armor guys you know it's like the stepchild you know um there was a Tom Daniels display paper models there was a big Star Wars specific to Star Wars model group and had his pretty collection there and yeah yeah and you're in and that was that was the tiger means for the car guys so it's just not judged and just for display mm-hmm and so I think it's
01:07:46
Torben Rothgeb
I don't want to be judging stuff enough for my cars or in this. I'm just not going to bring anything for the contest. But anyway, but I've been a lot of different stuff, so we'll have fun. Yeah. And Cameron, are you bringing anything? A few things. Yeah. how What do you think you got to bring?
01:07:59
Torben Rothgeb
Um, Bob suggested I bring the 1963 Indy. Yeah, Oh, that's one more category. They have Indy, right? They have Indy. Right, yeah yeah. And bring the Mercedes. It's a beautiful model. Yeah, I'll bring the Mercedes. I'll bring the Cobra. right Wait, Cameron doesn't bring the Cobra.
01:08:19
Torben Rothgeb
He has to bring it. Nobody needs to know about that. what is it What's the secret? Well, we did the Carol Shelby thing, you know. Oh, yeah. I finished second behind someone here. Oh, well, you know, it happens. I know, it does, yeah.
01:08:36
Torben Rothgeb
Stuffed about, boxed. I know. Whoa! Never would have occurred to me Never. No, it's fine. We're going to have fun. in it'll meet a And there's always stuff to buy, you know. No. yeah tools and out on it you know and other things so well i remember last time in the madison that we were there they had the they they'd just come out with all those ak pills right but they couldn't keep them on the show they couldn't keep them on the shelves they were gone like on thursday they were all gone yeah so
01:09:09
Torben Rothgeb
yeah Now, ah on the bench, what do you guys have on the bench? yeah I feel like I'm always talking about myself. Get that Momo card done. yeah Yeah, I know. I found a lost lost lost and found yeah started started project. yeah So that's what I'm going to be focusing on for at least the next month or so.
01:09:27
Torben Rothgeb
Yeah, it's a Tamiya Mustang GT4. Oh, GT4. Cool. That's what that is. Golf colors. But I'm doing is a fictitious, it's a golf scheme, basically.
01:09:39
Torben Rothgeb
haven't decided if it's going to be like a street car because it only has one seat. so that wouldn't really work so it's going to just be a you know pictures race race car and that's supposed it looks like a nice kit too oh it's a beautiful kit but it it's you know it doesn't have an engine oh yeah it got criticized by mr boyd because you know he's worked for ford and well you know i mean it's kind of weird they don't though in some ways yeah i have to kind of agree with them because it's like how often does you know to me i do a an american american car let alone a mustang and they did do a
01:10:10
Torben Rothgeb
one back in the 94. But that one had a full engine. That had a full engine, right. But nowadays, the engines fit in there so tightly, all you see is right the top. Right. I mean, and, you know, I think for most people, it's okay.
01:10:27
Torben Rothgeb
Right. I mean, it is a really well detailed, don't you? That posable wheels and... looks like a nice kit yeah look and you know it's apparently shake and bake so we'll see if that's true or not but anyway okay oh yeah so that's what i'm thrashing on so i got the um the 3d kit im working on oh yeah for our five one five six cameron saw it last night it's getting there yep um i put it in the pink primer someone painted ferrari red and um you're not trying to get that done for the national no no no it's a long ways from getting that and and uh i've ordered the decals that uh bob wants for that from from uh spain this is probably a dufil hill's car
01:11:10
Torben Rothgeb
I just got the email today saying the status has changed. It's now shipped. Wow. That was a several weeks ago that I placed the order. So they're done celebrating their World cup win. Yes, they are. Can I imagine that celebration? They're never stopped. And a couple airplanes still working on. Okay, cool. Okay.
01:11:30
Torben Rothgeb
momo car Yeah, I've got the late lamented Momo car that I hope is not lamented. over not lament It'll rise from the ashes. yeah that are a staed project yes It's not the one that got voted for the installed project but um it's Getting close to being being done. yeah what do you have left? I've got the roll cage because it only has half half, one third of a roll cage for the car.
01:12:08
Torben Rothgeb
Roll cage seatbelts and then fitting the body, which is a a resin a body that Andy Martin accurized to the real car.
01:12:26
Torben Rothgeb
I'm sitting the donor chassis up into it so that it's sits right. That that'll be interesting. The body looks great.

3D Printed Car Projects

01:12:37
Torben Rothgeb
It's paint is beautiful. It looks gorgeous. Yeah, but the paint and details are all done.
01:12:43
Torben Rothgeb
Just got a couple other details, but it's mainly the roll cage seat belts and then getting the chassis.
01:12:54
Torben Rothgeb
installed. Cool. Is that a Tomea kit? No, it's the Italaria Liqui Moly. Oh, okay. That's the guts of it, is that? That's the donor. Cool.
01:13:07
Torben Rothgeb
It's getting there. So going back to your 3D printed kit, have either one of you guys done a 3D printed car?
01:13:17
Torben Rothgeb
I have one about three quarters done. That's the Fiat Fuel Altered. I've oh yeah and that So that would be the first one you would get done. how about you, Cameron? if no i had to predict If you had to say the first 3D printed kit that you would complete, what would it be? if i if i get what If and when I get the Momo card done, then I'll get my three d printer that I bought a year and a half ago. I'll get it. started and one of the first ones I want to do is a real ah odd car that competed in the 1955 Le Mans 24 hour race. it's it's
01:14:00
Torben Rothgeb
and Anybody that's familiar with World War two
01:14:07
Torben Rothgeb
fighter plane belly tanks. you You've seen the belly tanker on Salt Lake cars. Well, imagine two belly tanks side by side with a structure in between holding the two together. That's what this car looks like. it It's called the Nardi Bissolural.
01:14:32
Torben Rothgeb
The engine is in one side of one of the pods and the driver is in the other pod. That's super weird. It's very weird. What's a kit? 3D printed kit? It's a 3D printed model from...
01:14:48
Torben Rothgeb
uh pora 80. but uh i've already got the decals from uh uh lemar details in spain and ready to go on on that that's that that should be hopefully my first 3d printer cool that's one cool once i get the way to see it art yeah yeah Well, speaking of odd cars, the only complete 3D printed one I have is from Randy, our friends at Randy's 3D printing. And it's a 77 Thunderbird.
01:15:23
Torben Rothgeb
So, um yeah, I would... ah That would be an interesting. The nice

NASCAR and Its Past Popularity

01:15:29
Torben Rothgeb
thing about those is I think the rest of the cars go together pretty quick. You know, I mean, the body doesn't look like it'll be any fun, but the interior and stuff all kind of click together. And and that's all 3D printed, too.
01:15:43
Torben Rothgeb
Yes. It's not a donor. No, no, but it is all 3D printed. um So the Ferrari is extremely fiddly. And i and I've broken plenty of pieces already. it's just we'll just see. We'll see how it goes. Well, Randy heard me complaining about the Bobby Allison Daytona winner.
01:16:00
Torben Rothgeb
So that's why he printed that one for me. But I think removing all of the stock stuff and that that plastic seemed very brittle i mean's brittle. I think I would rather, and I kind of like the one to the actual car, the street car.
01:16:16
Torben Rothgeb
um So I would one day like to just get it built as a stock vehicle. And I really like the triple green. I saw one up north like that. And that that would probably be the one I would do. Okay. So...
01:16:28
Torben Rothgeb
oh Yeah. um Let's see. We are down to the, well, I was watching the Brickyard on Sunday. And, you know, I was lucky enough to live down in Illinois when it started. And it was every bit as big as the Indy 500. And the Indy 500 was still, they had kind of had their split with cart. And so it was probably as low as it had ever been.
01:16:55
Torben Rothgeb
And so at the time, it was harder to get the NASCAR tickets. It is wild. I am watching this race Sunday. And even though there were 70,000 people, and for a NASCAR race, that's pretty good. It still looked empty. It looked really bad. It was so empty. And so as I was watching that, I came up with the question for this podcast.
01:17:21
Torben Rothgeb
ah Something that has lost its luster in recent years. Something that was... was really big at one point. Something you remember being really big and really huge and now ah and now is not. um Maybe that's a little too off the wall for a question. Oh, but it's a good question. It's a good question. I don't know whether we can come up with it in... yeah Something that's lost its luster.
01:17:48
Torben Rothgeb
what What popped into my mind when you said it just now is the Trans Am series. That's a good one. That's a good one. Early on, the Trans Am series got really, really big in the late 60s, especially in 1970. Now, they still race Trans Am, but it's not the same. You had everyone driving in that. And those are my favorite cars. When we go to Road America, those cars are my favorite. And not to jump on what Cameron said there, not to piggyback on, but when the Can-Am. I was just going to say the same thing. The Can-Am was the same thing. It was fantastic for those seven, eight years. And then they tried to bring it back with, you know, re-bodied Formula 5000 cars and it just wasn't the same. It's complete flop. Yeah, it just wasn't the same thing. So,
01:18:44
Torben Rothgeb
Yeah. So you think the brick hair has kind of lost that? Well, you know, I enjoyed it. And kudos to Corey Heim. He won it, ah you know, as a great young driver. I think he's the first guy win two races in his first 15 races since. wow I think it was A.J. Foyt or something. So ah and, you know, ah but, you know, I think for some of these people on these NASCAR pages on Facebook and stuff like that, you know, the 90s are gone. They're not coming back.
01:19:12
Torben Rothgeb
Okay, so for all those guys, it was the perfect storm. You know, it was you you add ah it was built on all these great drivers who who elevated in the 80s with, you know, Yarborough, Allison, Richard Petty. Bill Elliott, you know. and Yep, and and then you had it carry on into the 90s with still some, you know, Dale Earnhardt, Rusty Wallace. Mm-hmm.
01:19:36
Torben Rothgeb
And then you had this new breed that came with Jeff Gordon and you had that rivalry. You still had some good old boys against the new people. And that, you know, just blew up and it was huge. um But then, ah you know, things move on, things go on. yep um

TV and Sports Entertainment Shift

01:19:53
Torben Rothgeb
I still enjoy the heck out of of, and kudos to NASCAR. They've changed. They've done so many different things. It's not like major league baseball, even though baseball has speeded itself up, but it still has 162 games schedule. NASCAR has really tried road races, this and that.
01:20:10
Torben Rothgeb
And so it's racing. It's entertaining. And I've used the analogy before of tennis in the 80s and you had McEnroe and you had Lendl. And you had Jimmy Connors. And then on the female side, you had Chris Everett Lloyd and stuff like that.
01:20:29
Torben Rothgeb
And the personalities. And then you had golf with Tiger Woods. And then now you have the WNBA. Caitlin Clark. you know So these things are driven by personality. Driven by personality. And so they go up and down.
01:20:45
Torben Rothgeb
But you know it's still entertainment. And if you like racing, me know like race cars, it yeah it's out there. yeah know I agree. um and and But I can just predict what these people are. Oh, NASCAR is dead. Well, you've been saying it's dead for how long? you know but you still Since the death of a real dealer. Yeah.
01:21:04
Torben Rothgeb
Yeah. I mean, that's a big deal. But, you know, and that was, you know, but when Earnhardt died, he was in his 50s and he was winning one race every other year. So it was coming anyway.
01:21:16
Torben Rothgeb
Right. here right But no, um I guess I would have to say maybe I'll go outside of ah not you cars.
01:21:27
Torben Rothgeb
um Network TV is what I would say. Something that has lost its luster with all the streaming services. I mean, I remember thinking about Thursday night was must see TV, right? And, you know, it started, you know, with, I remember the Cosby show and Night Court and then, you know, um whatever was on Thursday night, ER, Seinfeld, Friends, You know, that was cheers. so I mean, those were all the shows. And, you know, and it it was you to sign a certain night. And my Uncle Terry, who I just lost, bless his bless his heart, rest in peace, Terry.
01:22:07
Torben Rothgeb
I remember I had a great conversation with him and he had such a great memory. that he, you know, I could say honeymooners and he would say what night that was, you know, you associate a day with these shows, yeah you know, and I remember Sunday night for me, I remember Alice and Jefferson's at nine o'clock, yeah you know, and that was, you know, part of getting back to, you know, school, it was kind of your, well, I got to go back to school, but at least I can watch one day at a time and Alice and all things. And so,
01:22:39
Torben Rothgeb
um I would say, you know, for better worse, now you can stream stuff. You don't have to wait around. you don't have to watch commercials. But you also kind of lost that, you know, where it was appointment TV. yeah And if you weren't on the TV, you'd miss it.
01:22:53
Torben Rothgeb
And then all your friends or whoever else at work would be talking about the show. And so the only time you can make food was on the commercial. and so was the water cooler well you know i could I could say you know you're talking about sports obviously but what about Monday Night Football?
01:23:09
Torben Rothgeb
yeah When it was in its heyday oh god that was big was you know was saying with the great teams and you know yeahp Dandy, Don, Mary turned out the there was nothing snap i yes you know so I don't think Monday Night Football is anything it used to be either Because there's so many games. Yes, they play every night of the week. To me, it's just like you know it's just it's watered down. yeah And for that matter, I mean, baseball to a certain extent, too, because you know i it's still obviously legitimate and all that stuff. Yeah.
01:23:46
Torben Rothgeb
You know, there's 162 games. And then the playoffs get stretched way out. Playoffs get stretched way out, right. You know, you get the wild card. World Series in December. Yeah, well, and that's the thing I appreciate about NASCAR, that they'll at least try stuff.
01:24:00
Torben Rothgeb
Right. I mean, if I was a commissioner of baseball, and and the sad thing of baseball is it's handcuffed. with um tradition and historic stuff. Because realistically, if you want it, and you're never going to get the horse back in the barn. If you're if you have a 162-game schedule and people are making that money, it you're not going to go back to it. But realistically, if they had like an 80-game schedule, or a hundred game schedule. Let's say a hundred, yeah. And at least... That's a lot of revenue. that's Yeah, that's why it never happened. That's why they're looking at it that way. They don't really care.
01:24:35
Torben Rothgeb
You know, um but then like if they could somehow start their playoffs before football season. I feel like once football season, baseball is just buried. It's buried. And you can't. And that's my

Favorite Cars from Museums

01:24:46
Torben Rothgeb
favorite time. And now as I've gotten older, that's about the only time I'll tune in once the playoffs starts. play And I'm like, who's this guy? Who's that guy? And then by the World Series, I know him.
01:24:57
Torben Rothgeb
But, you know, but yeah. That's a good question. to Yeah. That's cool. Yeah. All right. Well, and that leaves us with ah the Super 6. But before we get to that, I don't want to forget about Nordicon because that's coming up September 26th. And that is in Invergrove Heights. We also have pre-registration.
01:25:17
Torben Rothgeb

01:25:28
Torben Rothgeb
Yes, I will be working the gate there. so can't mind And so going to one more time say it. I know I sound redundant, but Sign up for the Nationals soon, so you're not sitting there for an hour at the Nationals signing up. Oh, this is directed to Tarbin? Well, I, unfortunately, if you can help each other. now they have to pretty you know It takes a little bit of work. I'll tell you what really irritates me, maybe because it was on my phone, but I will go and I'll hit the, I forgot pat my password, right? Mm-hmm.
01:26:03
Torben Rothgeb
So I'll reset it. New password. I will write it down. i will sit there and look at it and then type that password in. And it won't work. It work. So maybe if I do it on computer, i do maybe somehow it'll... When you just the other day requested a new password. Mm-hmm.
01:26:23
Torben Rothgeb
Did you wait until you got the email saying your account is now ready? because Maybe that's what I didn't do. It took a couple of days. I recently had to reset my password, request a new password, and you get a message that says...
01:26:45
Torben Rothgeb
ah your Your account reset has to be processed or approved. and Oh, that's what the problem is. So I have to walk away. Yeah. Go back a couple of days. You're getting emails telling you when when it it's it it's ready to use using the password that you, the new password that you were typed in.
01:27:11
Torben Rothgeb
Okay. The gist of this is to like pre-register for Nordicom. Yes, and free-reads for Nordeton as well. um Any, it's the same same categories, right? Same stuff. Everything's the same. We're going have a 3D printed category um and we're going to have an exhibition category.
01:27:29
Torben Rothgeb
So that's the ah difference here. um We have a new, yeah, we have a 3D printed kits, all full kits, not just parts. So it needs to be a full kit. And we have a guaranteed exhibition table. Everything else is the same.
01:27:43
Torben Rothgeb
The special awards are the same, and we're ready to go. Awesome. Awesome. Well, we hope to see as many people as possible on September 26th. All right. Moving on to our Super 6. Since we just visited the wonderful Museum of Speed in Lincoln, Nebraska, our six favorite museum cars from any museum that you've been to.
01:28:09
Torben Rothgeb
oh this is not just the... No, this is just any museum. I'll start off okay with the ah Ford Museum. I was able to see the Malco 33 Gasser. All right. please gaser That will be my first thing. Well, so I was fortunate enough that there was a...
01:28:31
Torben Rothgeb
car, automobile exhibition at the Phoenix Art Museum. Oh, God, yes. And I just, like, died and went to heaven. Well, there was, you know, it never rains in Phoenix. That particular day, it was like a monsoon. So it's like, take as much time as you want, you know. No problem. It's like, well, we'll see you week. But anyway, you know, you walk in and there's, you know, right in the lobby is, uh,
01:29:00
Torben Rothgeb
Mario Andretti's Formula One car. Lotus 79? That's sitting in the lobby. That's free. haven't even i havent even entered anything. haven't gone in through the door.
01:29:12
Torben Rothgeb
And then I start looking into the door and it's like, oh, here's Gurney's Eagle. you know the you guys The one you guys got to see. And right in front of it is the Lotus...
01:29:27
Torben Rothgeb
The Jimmy Clark car. Before they restored it. wow So that's only what? We're talking about you and there Then there was the Cobra Daytona coupe. That's four. And there was one of al or ah A.G. Foyt's who was his front-engined Oh, the 64 car? Yeah, that was there but soon um then there. I mean, it just went on and on. I was just like, you know, I ran out of, you know, battery on my camera because I just couldn't stop, you know. wow So anyway, so yeah, that was a memorable experience.
01:30:03
Torben Rothgeb
probably You sent me pictures that it was just jaw dropping. yeah all the cars yeah Anyway, sorry. so For me, I think it's it's a tough one, but if I get to pick six, i mean I'll do a couple of them. The Rislone Eagle that we saw, that was just just stunning. you know That was just a great car. That Novi that was there, the yellow Novi, that was utterly amazing.
01:30:27
Torben Rothgeb
um and I'm just kind of sticking it. When went to the Ford Museum to see the Ford Mark Ford, was impressive and to see Jimmy Clark's car, yeah the Lotus 38.
01:30:39
Torben Rothgeb
and And then probably when I went to Seattle, when I went to the LeMay Museum, oh oh my God, there were just so many great cars there. I mean, it's unbelievable. And i could I could, that's my six. I mean, there was there was a Duesenberg town car. There was um you know there's just everything you could think of was there, you know, so.
01:31:02
Torben Rothgeb
Well, I doubt that i' I'd come close to six, because I've only been to a couple of real car museums, twice being the Museum of American Speed.
01:31:15
Torben Rothgeb
But first one, the Rislone 1968 Indy winner is just a fabulous car.
01:31:26
Torben Rothgeb
So much to the point that um trying to find the AMT kit for for that car, which they did release in the 16 F8.
01:31:42
Torben Rothgeb
um But they've reissued the the Gurney Olsenite kits several times. But I've got two different conversions to make the gurney eagle kit into uh the rizlon car by made by two different uh model companies so i really would like to build it it's just uh see so seeing it was inspirational um the two
01:32:20
Torben Rothgeb
ah Parnelli Colts that Aloncer Senior won the Indy 500 in 70 and and they're not the really the same car. they're very distinct yeahp um the Indy Mercedes PC 23, I think it was. The Unsofit Polygar. Yeah, man mid ninety s um
01:32:51
Torben Rothgeb
But don the one that impressed me the most at the American Speed Museum this weekend was they have a section of land speed record cars and this time they had craig breedlove's spirit of america the the first one which was the car that he was the first to break the 400 mile an hour
01:33:24
Torben Rothgeb
i speed and the 500 mile an hour speed and that was there sitting right next to its direct competitor the Art Arfon's Green Monster. That was so cool. and And it amazed me that the Spirit of America was easily twice the size of the Green Monster but part of why the why the It made an impression on me.
01:33:55
Torben Rothgeb
My older sister, who has absolutely zero interest in cars at all, much less competition cars, she told me just recently that Craig Breedlove, the driver of the spirit of America, um he he was He's an alumni of the high school that I graduated from. Wow. If I'm ever talking about high school, somebody talking about high schools, if you ever see the original John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John movie, Grease, almost all of the school
01:34:39
Torben Rothgeb
exterior scenes when you're sitting on the the bleachers at the football field and any of those that's my high school and apparently Craig Breedlove's and Old Bridges and because it was in Los Angeles is los angeles a lot of celebrities. You didn't get all your six? to No, you guys kind of... I have more.
01:35:05
Torben Rothgeb
Let's take a shot. I'm done. I got mine. Well, a great museum for NASCAR fans is Talladega Museum. So they had a couple of K&K insurance cars that were really cool.
01:35:17
Torben Rothgeb
They had a big Bertha, the Gatorade car that Darrell Waltrip won a lot of his early races in. And like a 77 Monte Carlo ah with the Gatorade, beautiful Gatorade paint scheme. great pain scheme Dale Earnhardt's first championship car.
01:35:39
Torben Rothgeb
It was really cool. um You took the ones from the museum. I did the Allens. There's Indy winners. um But,

Rare Cars and Future Plans

01:35:47
Torben Rothgeb
you know, the 442 Pace Car 70 was really cool to look at. Talking about Pace Cars, the 67 Camaro Pace Car is in the Ford Museum. Then I went to the Corvette Museum in Bowling Green, Kentucky, and that had one of the
01:36:14
Torben Rothgeb
the racing Corvette Spirit of America. Oh, okay. It was really cool. um Like, ah Classic made the one. That's the one that Randy Durr did, right? Randy Durr did one. So that that would be really cool. And I'd probably say that would be in my sixth.
01:36:34
Torben Rothgeb
Jim, you got more? i do. So if you've ever, I know you none of you guys have ever been to the Garlets Museum. but That's great. Yeah. it's I've been to it several times. My mom and stepdad.
01:36:47
Torben Rothgeb
father had a place down in Ocala or not in Ocala, but it was in Winter Haven. But Ocala is where the Garland's Museum exists. And it started back.
01:36:59
Torben Rothgeb
He started back in the 70s when he was still racing. Oh, wow. And he just always felt like someday there would be a place for this stuff. And he still has like a open house for people that want to come see, you know, the stuff and he'll take you down the house. And it goes through a whole um era of, you know, you go in the stone into the building and you can smell the, it just smells really old. And like, it's, you know, like a moment in time, it's empty. Don't worry. And you just start out with Swamp Rat 1. Oh, my God. And you just walk down the line. and these And it's not just Garlet's cars. There's a lot of everything. And there's another whole other building now that has muscle cars. and Oh, my God. Well, and if you can't make the Garlet's Museum, then the Model Car Museum in Nebraska, Bob Halliday was donating his. Oh, right right. never thought of it. Which Swamp Rat was that? That was, I believe it was,
01:38:04
Torben Rothgeb
four i think or five i don't remember it doesn't matter anyway um another one that i remember and i may you're gonna have to help me on this so i was in ireland and they had one of james hunt's early f one cars heskin ask yeah that's what it was it's white yeah yeah that's so that was there was this little tiny building i'm like my god it's a formula one car and it's like really And I didn't i didn't know anything about it until I watched the movie, of course.
01:38:34
Torben Rothgeb
But um anyway, another museum that you're probably not familiar with is in I'm going to lose my train of thought. It's in Nevada in, like, Reno.
01:38:47
Torben Rothgeb
Okay. And he used to be the I'm trying to think of the guy's name. Oh. Hera used to have a huge museum, and he would get every new car that came in and and and put it in the museum. Okay.
01:38:59
Torben Rothgeb
And one of the cars that he got back in the, like, probably in the late 70s was Don Perdom's Snake Monza. Oh, nice. So that's where that exists. You can't actually go see it. You have to go to Reno to see it.
01:39:14
Torben Rothgeb
Okay. Because it doesn't come back to the united to other you know cities or whatever. Oh, okay. But yeah, so i mean, there's... Well, there's yeah tons. Yeah, it just goes on and on. When I went to the LeMay one, there's three other ones I forgot. When you walk into it, and the LeMay, it's circuit goes down like this.
01:39:34
Torben Rothgeb
And in the first four cars you see, there's a Cobra Daytona Coupe, Mario's Lotus 77, a Mercedes Goldring, a 300SL, and I'm just like, I fell on the floor. So, my God. And we help you, sir. I'm just like, Alonso Estratos, you know. It was just like, this is all, the stuff that was unbelievable.
01:39:57
Torben Rothgeb
you know so And we're going to the Indy Museum, the refurbished Indy Museum, which should be Absolutely fantastic. Really looking forward to the Jeff Gordon section. That would be awesome. Just think of all the winning cars. They have these garages that are done up in period regalia. It's just going to be fantastic. Just like they were back in the day.
01:40:19
Torben Rothgeb
And no, it'll be it'll be really great. I mean, those two that there was a Curtis Craft at the Speed. There was a Watson Roadster. There was big display of A.J. Watson. it was special Blue Crown Special. Oh, at the Museum of Speed? yeah Yeah. Well, hopefully they were able to keep some of that stuff because, you know, you don't want to lose that stuff. yeah right It's amazing, man.
01:40:40
Torben Rothgeb
Yeah. Did you guys ever make it to the Morneau Museum in, I think it's South Dakota? if For the people who aren't in this area, if you ever try to drive to Mount Rushmore.
01:40:52
Torben Rothgeb
It's a lot longer than you think it's going to be. And it just goes on and on and on. And there's only signs for wall drug for like 40 miles. Five cent coffee at wall drug. yeah yeah And ah they have the same kind of thing for the Morneau Car Museum.
01:41:09
Torben Rothgeb
And so... ah And it it the nice thing about that museum is it's all survivors. you know They have a Plymouth Superbird there. They do? Wow. But it's like the original paint. Oh, that's cool. So it's in South Dakota. Yeah.
01:41:25
Torben Rothgeb
yeah It's on the way to a Mount Rushmore. um and it had a 70 gto that was pretty cool and um you know but you're kind of walking around in these pool pool barns kind of thing um but it it's it's pretty cool and certainly there's nothing else to do when you're driving to south dakota of course yeah no but worth it because you know mount rushmore is cool and you know Then they have, what is the ah the small town?
01:41:55
Torben Rothgeb
Deadwood. Deadwood, South Dakota. Yeah. So that's ah that's pretty cool as well. So hopefully we're going to have another podcast after we get back from the Nationals. We will have to. give us a chance to talk about all the great stuff at the Nationals. Right. So, yeah. Yeah. So. ah Thank you to our listeners out there. Enjoy the rest of the summer ah because it's going to go by soon enough. Until next time.
