NNL East Trip & GSTA Show
00:00:42
Torben Rothgeb
You're on fire, man. Yes, well we have all kinds of special guests. We have the infamous Johns Weber.
00:00:51
Torben Rothgeb
a we know ya How's it going? Welcome. I'm here. Yep, he's going to talk to us all about the NNL East, his first NNL East trip.
00:01:02
Torben Rothgeb
Then we have ah what some call the Oracle. Cameron is back, if you remember him from the IndyCar episode. How you doing, Cameron? I'm doing okay, Tor, but how about you?
00:01:15
Torben Rothgeb
I'm doing fantastic. Much better now we've got the show on the road. did believe Did you leave him out again? Oh, yeah. Jim. That's And Jim is back.
00:01:32
Torben Rothgeb
and and jim is back We're going to talk about the April 12th show. What was the name
Model Car Projects & Collection Management
00:01:40
Torben Rothgeb
of that show that we went to? GSTA show, you mean? GSTA. How could I forget that? That just rolls off the tone.
00:01:47
Torben Rothgeb
Go for State Timing Association. Timing Association. Yeah, it's an old club from the early days of hot riding and drag racing and that kind of thing. Twin Cities based.
00:02:00
Torben Rothgeb
awesome awesome well and that is the first show so we should talk about that one first we got uh three big time shows to talk about uh we're also going to be talking about the history of the milwaukee nl we got all kinds of new releases uh my goodness i i don't know what i'm gonna buy first with all those we have as you stated in the last episode you had a pro was that the last episode of the one before the proclamation I stood up here in front of God and that everyone. Yes, yes, I know. And then there was happy hobby. when The first step is admitting you have a problem. I very definitely have a problem. but
00:02:47
Torben Rothgeb
yeah yeah It's all right. But I have a new strategy now. i'm going to... ah Like, for instance, you know, I've kind of lost interest in 50s just stock vehicles. And so I'm going to take five of those, and then I can only pick one to keep, and I'm going sell the rest. and so Does that include the Indy Pace cars that you were doing?
00:03:13
Torben Rothgeb
No, I still – Because those were cars. Those still bring me joy. Because those were Pace cars you were going to do, and I know there's 55 Chevy –
00:03:21
Torben Rothgeb
There was a pile
Trading, Buying Models & New Releases
00:03:23
Torben Rothgeb
of them that you were going to do yet. So you might want to revisit that again and another. Well, the ones off the top of my head that I was thinking of was the, I do have the 55 Nomad.
00:03:36
Torben Rothgeb
And then I have the Edsel, the stock Edsel kit. 58 Edsel, fifty eight ah so yeah yep um Yeah, not the the wonderful, um what was the one that was in new releases last night? The new one, you mean with the um outhouse door? Yes. What was the name of that? Have we forgotten already? I just erased it from month's plan. Yeah, let's forget about it, okay.
00:03:59
Torben Rothgeb
It's something like a, not a Benger, uh, Okay. Anyway. Forget about it. But no, the the good stock one, I'm going to have to get rid of that. Those type of 50 vehicles. Okay.
Upcoming Shows & Summer Build Plans
00:04:10
Torben Rothgeb
Fair enough. We'll be there to pick up the slack. Don't worry about it. Yes. We'll help you through it. Yeah. um Then our question of the month is going to be ah favorite and least favorite stage of model car building. Good question.
00:04:23
Torben Rothgeb
ah Then, you know, with the summer coming up, as teachers, that we always look forward to summer. Might be the only thing in our job that we look forward to. But we got the summer build plans. And then I think all of us are going to nationals. So um looking out to ah early August, what what is the one or two things that we hope to have done to to take to the nationals?
00:04:50
Torben Rothgeb
um Then we and we actually have two Super 6 questions. We have ah favorite factory paint colors. I think we've done famous racing paint schemes, but this one is just for stock vehicles that came off the assembly line.
00:05:07
Torben Rothgeb
um And if you want to add the car that you really like, you know, that would go best with it, you know Sure. thinking like a 70 GTO and Orbital Orange.
00:05:19
Torben Rothgeb
And then our six best driving seasons of all time. I thought with ah Tyler Riddick, one first three races in NASCAR, the first time that's been done. And he's got five five wins so far. So, ah you know, that think about the ah the six best driving seasons of all time.
Canterbury Park Show Highlights
00:05:40
Torben Rothgeb
We could probably have Cameron talk the whole two hours we could for that. I've come up with three at least okay well in in my wheelhouse.
00:05:51
Torben Rothgeb
okay We'll take care of it. We'll cross that bridge when we get to it. but that That's all the way at the bottom. We've got to go back up to the top. Back in time.
00:06:03
Torben Rothgeb
Yes, and speaking of time, what is the Timing Association? Gopher State, that's us. Gopher State Timing. Yes, Gopher State. Yes. All right. So um this was a show that they had one-to-one cars, and then they also had just like a big couple big dioramas. Funny car theme was one of them, and then they just had a basic like Saturday night cruising theme.
00:06:30
Torben Rothgeb
but yeah So the display, though, was basically like a 125th scale car show, like if you went to a winter car show in Minnesota, like World of Wheels or okay something like that.
00:06:45
Torben Rothgeb
This would be like the... if you brought models for a display and it had people allegedly calling them people but yes uh dan was nice enough to supply all the dan's a uh figure master yes he's working on don knots as we speak oh yeah that's that's probably true but anyway so yeah so um basically what it is is it's basically a display of cars that you can bring to the show to the one-to-one car show and then
00:07:16
Torben Rothgeb
They found a hobby shop that would sponsor the event. And so they they drew names for winning the kits and that kind of thing. But no, it was the first time I had attended to it, the show.
00:07:31
Torben Rothgeb
And also this is the second time it was at the horse track, the canterburgry Canterbury
Model Kits Preferences & 3D Printing Innovations
00:07:39
Torben Rothgeb
Park. And it was really, really nice space. It was a well lit. A lot of people...
00:07:45
Torben Rothgeb
Yeah, I know this was the first time for you too. so Yeah, the one-to-one cars were really great. and They had a a wonderful Sox & Martin, 67 Plymouth. um They had a ah few other, the early Mopar, you know, like 64, 65. Yeah, yeah. Hemi cars. Yeah, yeah.
00:08:06
Torben Rothgeb
They had a Dukes of Hazzard one, right, I think? Yeah, I think it was a Lucy base replica. Tribute type thing. Yeah, i don't think it was accurate. think it had like a newer Dodge Charger engine in the engine bay as opposed to the conventional, you know, yeah Charger of old.
00:08:26
Torben Rothgeb
But I know you really liked that GTO that was there, the 70. Yep, the 70. You know, but every time I look at the one-to-one GTO, then I kind of feel bad because the kit, the headlights on the kit always looked a little off to me.
00:08:42
Torben Rothgeb
So as much as I'd like to build a 70 GTO, i I don't know. Maybe 3D printing will come up. we're We're modelers. That's what we do, right? We'll figure out. There's actually a lot of um detailed headlights that you can buy now um that are clear and they actually look rather close to the real
NNL East Memories & Vendor Experiences
00:09:03
Torben Rothgeb
McCoy. So I think it's close enough to where if you kit bash that, I know that's not one of Bob's favorite things to do, but he's learning.
00:09:13
Torben Rothgeb
So, but yeah, no, I think they make some some pretty decent ones now and then people are really getting into the, you know, lights that actually light up on cart on models. Now, if you've seen a lot of that. There was Bigot at an L East.
00:09:28
Torben Rothgeb
no Oh, really? Yeah. Okay. how do they How do they do that? There's a company, it's eva you yeah Elon, it's something, um eed whatever, but yeah they've got everything for...
00:09:42
Torben Rothgeb
I saw Hiawatha Hobbies had a number of those. Did you see that on the shelf? yeah Lighting kits. Lighting kits. And it was our very own guy in our club who built the state patrol car. Oh, yeah, Tristan. Tristan. chris They did a really nice job on it. And back in the day, Mr. Zabel did a 66 Ford, and he had headlights that worked and stuff.
00:10:05
Torben Rothgeb
And Eric's a sci-fi guy, so he really got into it via the sci-fi stuff because they have a lot of theirs that are lit up. you know Kind of like drinking this. Spaceships. Yeah. right All right. Well, that takes us to NL East. John, take it away. What were your thoughts? I was there. Yes.
00:10:25
Torben Rothgeb
Well, um friend of mine from the Bay Area said, have to go. So we met in Newark. Stayed at the host hotel, the Embassy Suites.
00:10:37
Torben Rothgeb
I don't know if you've ever stayed at an Embassy Suites, but When my kids were like eight and 10, we did some trips, we stayed there and they have not changed. Okay. And is that a good or bad? Yes. It was relatively clean, but...
00:10:53
Torben Rothgeb
um It hasn't been updated in 30 years. so Was it better than the ones we stayed at Road America? that was bad. That was bad. Anything was better than that. I was i was thinking about the the Detroit a show and the hotel you stayed at there. no. This is... With the with the marijuana. Oh, yes. Permeating air the air. Yeah, contact buzz just walking to your room.
00:11:20
Torben Rothgeb
but As a host hotel, it was it was nice because they had... It was a meet and greet on Friday night and you could register. So they were set up till nine o'clock to register for the show, which was great.
00:11:32
Torben Rothgeb
so you could literally just walk right in then, right? Well, no, you can't walk right in, but at least you're registered. So the next morning when you get up and but what Bill had told me is it always rains. And sure enough, um we got to the, I think it opened at nine and we got there at eight and it's already around the building it's at eight o'clock it's around the police something lodge and there's there's baseball fields around it you know jim yeah and there's these kids are like five-year-olds and ten-year-olds playing baseball and then it starts raining and drizzling but they're coming down going past everybody get your little wrist strap and pay your money so we you can pretty much walk in after that and it goes pretty fast yeah it it really did go fast and it wasn't getting drenched but
00:12:19
Torben Rothgeb
We drove in, and the parking lot was between the people playing baseball and the people showing up for the show. my God, it must have been packed. Oh, it was. Yeah, it was no no place to go. it was nuts. So they had three rooms. One of the rooms is for all the models. And it was really hard to tell because I heard rumors that they had 1,400 models. That's what it said online. Now, I don't know if that's – they had a lot of tables and they had space. That was nice, but – They also had display things around the whole gymnasium. So I don't know if they were counting that as in the show or... They usually do. Yeah, it was... They do that in Milwaukee too. Yeah, they want to pump the numbers up Well, I think they're they're competing with Acne. So we'll see what Acne comes up with this year.
00:13:02
Torben Rothgeb
They had ah a range. They had a red, white, and blue for if you had a red, white, blue model. So there are a lot of those. um They had some incredible models there. um And it was because of an NNL...
00:13:14
Torben Rothgeb
yeah They really only did like the best of show and that was it. And you could vote. I never opened my goodie bag to see what was in there, but you can vote for best junior and something else. But, um, Marco Cruz, I think.
00:13:27
Torben Rothgeb
Mark Marcos Cruz won. I'm trying to think of... I thought it was vence i thought maybe' beenncelo ask ven so Vince. it And the Ferrari. Yeah, he had the Ferrari, which was... It deserved it.
00:13:42
Torben Rothgeb
Dobo barigato, Vince Lobasco. Not a factory hero. it was He's already drinking too much. He did a great job. It was fun seeing the vendors. They had two rooms for vendors. o And they had a room where they were taking photographs, which was interesting because Automobile Magazine um What are they?
00:13:59
Torben Rothgeb
Is it? What's the one that? Auto modeler? Tim was working with? Oh, talking about Tim Boyd? Yeah. Yeah, that's auto modeler. Okay. They were really organized. And he was and Tim Kalankiewicz had a thing there, but i don't know if he took any photos because he's trying to start a magazine. And then the... Who's the guy? He started it. Oh, okay. Well... It's already got two ah issues out. I don't know if he even took any pictures. he was That was empty when I walked in.
00:14:28
Torben Rothgeb
um And the other one, who's the guy from... Hawaii now that has. Oh, Greg. He was there? No, but there was a very small setup. Oh, taking pictures? Well, I think. but i when He was there because I saw video real quick of no report known people at the show. Greg was there? And he was one of them. Well, he certainly wasn't in where they were taking photos. Yeah, or where there are people complaining about not getting their issues. Push them aside. Because there has there hasn't been a new issue. So when was the last NNL West? Because that was the last issue. That was two years ago.
00:15:09
Torben Rothgeb
That's how long it's been because they did the last... um You were there. Yeah, I'm shocked. Not. No, it's not shocking because I think the last two years there were maybe yeah it's maybe four issues. Yeah. The funniest was a lifetime subscription you could sign up for when they were going back in. And yeah know that'd basically be a year when it's all said and done. The vendors were, there were some fantastic stuff.
00:15:36
Torben Rothgeb
um It's amazing. Did you get your RB motion stuff? I did. i saw hands and i saw he was going to be there, but I walk in and I don't see him. Everybody's got their things up. Auto model, auto modelers, but are the husband and wife team, they were in Detroit in the spring.
00:15:54
Torben Rothgeb
They were there, and they are organized. They have – I cannot believe this. They're so organized. Fujimi's in a row, everything is row. They sell kits, right? They sell kits. Yeah, I know them. They're really nice people, too. Oh, they are.
00:16:05
Torben Rothgeb
She's so sweet. They'll give you they'll give you a little bit of a deal and stuff, too. I've known them for a long time. They even carry Academy, which is out Korea. Oh, yeah. So I had to buy something from them. Of course. you Okay.
00:16:19
Torben Rothgeb
Academy makes – a hobby shop from the like sixties. I don't know if you've seen it. it was It was like 40 bucks. Well, I could, it has little, i mean, probably six millimeter long jets. What scale is it?
00:16:33
Torben Rothgeb
Well, it's like one 24 scale, but the model jets are like this big. They're six millimeters and there's ships and stuff. You put in the windows, all sorts of stuff. I did find um Robert Burns, Ivy motion. I got down there and he was there with his wife. There was no sign or anything. And he's got everything organized, all the A&M. I don't know if but if you're familiar with that. A&M fittings that he does are incredible. They're stunning. And he had a bunch them there. So You bought them out. absolutely and You wiped them out, didn't you? Well, I'm like, oh, I need this. I need this.
00:17:08
Torben Rothgeb
I need this too. And he's he said he'd already sold a bunch of stuff. Well, I hope he had some protection leaving because I'm sitting there. And he said, wow what are we up to? He says, well, it's 150 um I only had 130. So he said, well, no, you keep the money. I'll put this back here. So went, Bill, I need 30 bucks. so And I wasn't going to buy anything. But I asked him. How many tables there, think?
00:17:35
Torben Rothgeb
and The vendors? Oh, it was huge. It's hard to say because one room was even bigger than the other. Yeah, their they're big rooms. It was rows and rows. unusually pretty packed most the time. Wow. Wow. it was It was great to see the stuff. he I said, when are you going open your website? Because it's been closed for a year. he says, well, you know, I've got so many things that I'm having to work on. You have my email. Just email me.
00:17:56
Torben Rothgeb
So that's what I'll Was Rebecca Miniatures there? um No. In fact, a lot of the people you'd expect. Was it Norm there, though? No. You sure? Because it like like typically he still goes, but he doesn't fan. That's what I thought. i'm okay um There was a guy.
00:18:15
Torben Rothgeb
i wrote some of this stuff down. Let me see. funny you talk about rain because we had rain at the Detroit show. Remember how hard it was raining? Oh, man, yeah. Ed Servo.
00:18:34
Torben Rothgeb
He's got... Bill knew who he was. He said he has a pile of unobtainium kits, just, and they're priced accordingly. Original kits? Oh, yeah. Yeah. And they're just, it's it's stunning. He's just got a pile of them. So I looked, but no way I'm going What was tempting to you?
00:18:53
Torben Rothgeb
Oh, let's see. There were probably seven or eight kids. There were like 200 and up. sure And then the guy next to him does 3D printing. I didn't get his name, but he's 3D printing. he pulls out a chassis for a Ferrari P4. Yeah.
00:19:09
Torben Rothgeb
all the tubing, it's three d printed. He says, oh, but I have to put another one here and here. And I'm thinking, dear God, this stuff was stunning. So you got a few of those? No, i know I was, Model Car Garage had the whole, it had seven tables. Yeah. Oh my God. He was prepared because he had some new stuff and everything. he was going to debut at the show. Yeah. So that P4 chassis.
00:19:32
Torben Rothgeb
cassie How much did it run? Well, he didn't have a price. The problem is he had some bodies printed. He had some bodies printed, but he didn't have windows for him.
00:19:44
Torben Rothgeb
Bill asked him, he says, well, what about the windows? said, well, I haven't got that yet. They were it's stunning. so and Some of it was the guys that show up with the same box trying to sell stuff.
00:19:55
Torben Rothgeb
um I was impressed. There was a lot of lot of stuff there. If you wanted to buy something, there was. and The prices were decent except for The unobtainium. The unobtainium. Yeah, that was no. Who was the guy in Detroit that had that humongous? Do you remember the name of the place?
00:20:12
Torben Rothgeb
But he had a lot of those like $300 like MPC Pro Stock. you're talking about the one that had like a private entrance to the hall. yes yeah Yeah, it was like there was one way in and one way out. Yeah, definitely a damn fire hazard. No.
00:20:28
Torben Rothgeb
But anyway, yeah, and and they were priced accordingly. Yes. yeah A lot of $300 kits. Higher and higher. Yeah, and but I can't remember the name of it. Other than that, found a fantastic Italian restaurant in downtown. Really?
00:20:43
Torben Rothgeb
Persephone, one of those places. it was just off the main drag. but now You're right, it's Persephone. Yeah, it was it's an old building. They've totally redone it, and they are Italian. And this place was... They had guys walking out that are doing deliveries just constantly.
00:20:58
Torben Rothgeb
We had a 45-minute wait. And then... Did you have anything besides dessert? Well, I didn't. Well, they're famous for the thinny-thin pizza. So it was really thin, and it was great. We got... We finished... We almost finished the whole thing. And then I looked at the dessert menu, and... Oh, God, I got So, yeah, I had dessert. Of course you did. I had two of them. Of course. But the fantastic food there. That's great. It was stunning. it's Probably reasonable, too, right? It it wasn't bad. Yeah. No, it's it's a good area to have the show, you know. Yeah. It'd be fun to go sometimes. i I like the show, but I don't know if i'll go back. it's I like the Acme more. Yeah.
00:21:37
Torben Rothgeb
so yeah Okay. and So that was the show. Cool. Boy, talking about the spectrum of pizza with the thin, thin pizza all the way to the Detroit's Pizza at Buddies. Yeah, I know. Now I got to go back to Detroit. Wait, I'm going to miss the spring show. most There isn't a spring show. Yeah, they didn't have it this year. that's right. It's fall show. No, there's the fall show and the original location.
00:22:00
Torben Rothgeb
Yeah, but great location. Can I stay at the same hotel? I think so. Okay. There's a lot of shows before that, though, John. I know. Yes. They need to get to. Well, speaking of that, we had the NNL Milwaukee. It's funny because then I think it was one of the January meetings. yeah Anybody going to Milwaukee and it's just crickets and nobody's there. But we managed we managed to get five ah five people.
00:22:28
Torben Rothgeb
um even though it took chad a little longer to get over there um bob had to call him and then chad's oh i'm i'm not supposed to be there till six like yeah it's 6 20 and then it's like oh i'll be there in 15 minutes and i wanted to get on the phone explain to me how this is gonna happen because you obviously just woke up okay and Even if you're sleeping in the clothes that you're going to wear today, ah by the time you get out of the house, that'll be at least three minutes and drive over here from my where does he live at? crystaler Crystal or something?
00:23:06
Torben Rothgeb
Yeah. He didn't do too bad. He did too bad. No. no the So what did you think of the show, Torben? i I like the show. And just like last year, I was amazed ah that it goes a lot quicker when we we leave Saturday morning. Because I think in the past, you take a Friday off work and drive early Friday And I think just so there was so much waiting around. I mean, even Friday, you'd kind of wait around. You'd hit Model Empire and the Happy Hobbies and the few that have opened and closed since then. um But then, you know, we'd usually eat at an Italian restaurant. What was the name of that place on Friday?
00:23:49
Torben Rothgeb
We stopped eating we do the mission we did Mission Barbecue or Billy Sims. And then ah you know then I think waiting waiting waiting around all Saturday made it go a lot. So when we finally got to the show on Saturday, it seemed like it went forever. But leaving on Saturday morning, it it went a lot faster. I liked the show.
00:24:09
Torben Rothgeb
um you know that There was more stuff on the table this this year. Was there a theme? It was kitbashed, and then it was also dirty, getting yeah dirty. Getting dirty. Getting dirty. Yeah. Yeah. yeah And weren't a whole... Now, as the... um The ah weathering ah snob, I would say sometimes you say. If there's an area, Bob is you know usually pretty forgiving and nonjudgmental, but I think with your armor background, if there is one area that you say more snarky things than other things... It's on weathering. So what did you think about the getting dirty as you walked around that team table? It was okay. I mean, it's it's the typical thing of car and car people are not as good at doing that um as armored people.
00:25:06
Torben Rothgeb
yeah know And a lot of armored stuff is overly weathered, too. And I had a great discussion with one of the stalwarts of that club, and he just thought lot of the stuff was just so overdone. Yeah. So, and a lot of it was just the, even the cars weren't that dirty. They were just, they were part of, they were a sprint car or they were, they had a tractor layout from, uh, Porsche tractors, Porsche racing liveries on them, which were kind of interesting.
00:25:34
Torben Rothgeb
Um, I, the themes that there was, there wasn't a lot on the kit bashing table. You know, I didn't think there was, um, It was more on the dirt getting dirty table, I thought. It was it was it was okay.
00:25:48
Torben Rothgeb
I mean, next year, the year the themes are show rods and vans. Was Mr. Deal there? Mr. Deal was not there. Really? Logan Hanson was there with some of his you know stuff. like He likes to beat stuff up. And he had ah hit a couple, two or three things.
00:26:06
Torben Rothgeb
um What did you think, Hamlin? I thought was a good show. Interesting hours open at 3 p.m. and ends at 8 p.m. They open at 3? At 3. They might as well drive over on Saturday. I know. It's it's a little long.
00:26:27
Torben Rothgeb
yeah You find yourself waiting around for the awards and getting –
00:26:35
Torben Rothgeb
to the restaurants or whatever because you're hungry or if you didn't take time out to eat between yeah going to look at models. Although I do like the bowling alley and um and we were able to watch what I would have to say the best Kentucky Derby ever. That's true. My God, yeah god the horse was in last place. The horses fall down. No, it looked like he had a turbo boost and he wasn't even whipping the horse. And was the first woman trainer.
00:27:04
Torben Rothgeb
Yes, first one we're trying. And it like I said, it's probably ah it compared to a NASCAR race, alller answer'scar that Dale Earnhardt race where he was in 18th on the last lap or something and and passed. that I mean, he just, yeah, it was it at first you thought this other person was laying back and they took the lead. But then this this guy comes back from all – it was a great race. So we least could watch the Kentucky Derby. And we had karaoke. Bob could not talk any of us into karaoke. Getting up on stage. yeah Did you get up on stage?
00:27:37
Torben Rothgeb
No, I wanted some support. no no I wanted some support. Well, the Blues Brothers were supporting people. they were They were the guys running the karaoke thing. They were dressed like the Blues Brothers. And if a guy started to flame out real bad, they'd kind of pick him pick up the song. What was that? Throw bottles at him. This one dude was... and he gets up there. He sang If I Had a Million Dollars by the Baranacalace. And it was like five people singing all off key. It was like each of them were picking a pitch out of the air. It was wrong. It was awful. yeah
00:28:13
Torben Rothgeb
yeah but yeah i thought And I thought the raffle was pretty They had some pretty nice things in the raffle. I won three things for our NNL raffle. Tell us what else you won.
00:28:25
Torben Rothgeb
or else did I win? At Dan and El Milwaukee. Oh, I won an award. What was the award? The Cool as Hell Award. Really? Yeah. Congratulations. yeah It was for the 53 Ferrari of Alberto Oscari. Thank you, Cameron, because since Cameron sold it to me. so Thank you, Doug, somewhere in the Model Car Hall of Fame somewhere.
00:28:50
Torben Rothgeb
And yeah, it was was great. Congratulations. Always feels good. yeah Yes. yeah but And then they had one of their awards, like Ambassador of the Hobby type thing or club member of thing. They do a club on paul member of the area. They always do that. Don Molitor won that. And did he win the Dirty theme too?
00:29:08
Torben Rothgeb
I don't remember what the other one was, but he did win. He was up there for two awards. Yeah. yeah So then I think it was because he had a trailer, 37 Ford maybe pulling something. Yeah, that won that. one that yeah He did win that. yeah and it was you know It's hard when there's not a vending vending people at the show because then you're kind of you're forced to know and i no not but mean i' left that up But it's just you you have to interact with the people. And I had some good and not so good interactions with people there and just you know talking to each other about... Don't you go to interact to the shows?
00:29:52
Torben Rothgeb
Oh, I do. I mean, I like to interact with people, but It's interesting just the different levels of interaction and how they... Well, let's hear about the ones you didn't like. No, I'm not going to do that. any Well, you could you could talk about... You could be vague. You could talk about the social aspect of the members of you know Milwaukee yeah and so don't that don't have the same...
00:30:16
Torben Rothgeb
whatever whatever you want to call it, respect of of you or what you're bringing. We've about this lots of That's really improved, though. i think in Now, it's sad it took 20 i think you have I think you have an edge because there are several that you go to hang out with. and but They look for Torment. Yes, they look for Torment. And then they look for a place to get a beer. Yeah. The rest is history. well and This was the first year both me and Glenn Janikowski ah were able to sync up because for about five years we've been trying to build the same model or same driver. right and so The first year it was actually, it goes back long enough, the vinyl Richard Petty car. We were going both build that. I honestly could not find one. i don't know How far back does that go?
00:31:14
Torben Rothgeb
It's a long time. This is a Salvino's kit though. Yeah, that Salvino's that you were stretched to vinyl. And remember, Salvino's is so funny because they get real high on something. We're going do them all with these vinyl things. And I think that's the only one ever with the One the first ones that they did was with your pal. Luca C. And he had to actually stop the video.
00:31:35
Torben Rothgeb
and come back i was just going to ask if that was i watched it because it was it was comedy it was just a riot it's probably one of the best ones he's ever done because it failed miserably you easy for well because he he kept pulling on these vinyl he kept yeah it's it's all vinyl so there's no decals it's going to replace decals and it's going to replace decals and so he's stretching it you know it's it's designed to stretch over the body And so when it didn't fit, then he's pulling it up, you know, and you know what that's like when you pull tape, you know, and it's like, you know, and you can see the sweat, you know, pouring down his face. One of his kids was climbing over him. Was that his grandkid? Yeah, whatever. I don't know. It's some hillbilly. Oh, let's stop. is great for the hobby. we were yeah I was just watching his new release section, so I think.
00:32:30
Torben Rothgeb
casting sha or great we want all We want all the positive energy so he can finish those Lotus kits. yeah well yeah and i know He's burying the midnight oil doing those. yeah we can ah prey but but no anyway so We had that the ah vinyl one and then one year we were going to do an Alan Kawicki car. and I think Glenn built that one and I didn't. then The next year I built something and he didn't build it. so Finally we both built Chase Elliott cars. um And then next year we're on. Was that that one? nice Yes, that's that one. Kelly Blue Book. And he did. Actually, he put some money into his because I i believe this was like.
00:33:12
Torben Rothgeb
the original Chase Elliott glue kit, which goes for astronomical money. this was the same car that he did? No, he built he built ah number 24 when Chase Elliott was still driving the 24 car. And I believe it was the yeah the one that was sold as a NAPA 24 car. which for NASCAR kits is like the Rolls Royce because they only made a very few. Then Ravel went out of business and then they the molds are supposedly lost. So those really go for about 150 or something. So Glen put it. Now they have a snap type version of both a Dale Jr. and a Jimmy Johnson snap type ones. And even those have edged up higher, you know, so.
00:33:57
Torben Rothgeb
But so we got that done. It's good visiting with him and his son. And he built a 116th Charger Funny Car with the Pabst Blue Ribbon. And he wrote a great note on it because I never thought he was much of ah a Drag Race fan.
00:34:12
Torben Rothgeb
But he wrote, I built this for my son because he loves drinking Pabst Blue Ribbon. Oh, it's His 20s. Because, you know, in Wisconsin, you don't have to have a, you can be six years old if yeah yeah if there's an adult with you. you can or No, it's true. You don't believe me, do you? You think I'm joking. I think they did finally move it up to 18, though. Yeah.
00:34:39
Torben Rothgeb
I'm not sure. know you have First of all, it's an unwritten rule. It's an unwritten rule. There you go. In Wisconsin, anything goes. Oh, anything goes, yes. Well, and you should talk about the swap meet because it sounds like that was a pretty good haul, too, on Sunday. Oh, the swap meet was. Let's go back to the we're to the hobby shops first. Oh, yeah. We don't want to skip over those. no yeah So we went to a Hiawatha Hobby, and you got something that you're open?
00:35:04
Torben Rothgeb
Yeah. And I got something and you got something? did not. I was good at Iowa. Okay. So Bill got a couple. I got something nice. Cameron did. And then we went to Cal's Collectibles and I figured that's the place I'm going to have to drag Torben out of physically. but Did he remember you this time?
00:35:20
Torben Rothgeb
He did remember his name. And he even said after I dropped a lot of money. But I do have to say the biggest by far the most amount of money I spent ah even a lot more than on that 67 Camaro pace car kit was ah was ah Leah's anniversary present. Oh, you're good man. Yeah, I bought that.
00:35:44
Torben Rothgeb
Tell them what it is. because Have you have you given it to her yet? No, it's her anniversary, which is June 10th. So I'm ahead of the ballgame. don't see He's rolling. yeah She doesn't listen to the show. And at least we're 35 minutes in. She definitely wouldn't have gotten this far into it. 35 seconds. yes We always find, Cameron and I always find there's lots of good books there. yeah you know and Can't have enough books. Can't. What did you find? Not for me yet. No, I know.
00:36:13
Torben Rothgeb
i mean, if you're going to maintain the Oracle status, you need to have plenty of books. I got a really good deal on a Colour Me Gone Superstar. car. Car. It was great. Really good deal on that.
00:36:25
Torben Rothgeb
All sealed. I had to make sure I had some bad experiences with cows. Opened up, and it was all there. Even with sealed ones? This one was taped shut. Oh, yeah. It's quite the same. Semi-sealed. Cameron got a...
00:36:41
Torben Rothgeb
a vacuform machine yeah that that has to be 60 years old. easy I was able to plug it into an outlet, the the hot plate,
00:36:54
Torben Rothgeb
started heating up it was a scream that was him no just as long as i felt that there was some heat being generated i unplugged it and the uh the vacuum pump uh had really good suction so that'll work um cool i decided waiting to get started with my 3D printing. A lot of the files I've bought come with windshield box, vac form box for the glass of the cars that I've gotten. So the idea of, hey, might as well grab it. It was only $30. Do you get any kits then? Yeah.
00:37:42
Torben Rothgeb
ah Not at Cal's. Okay. Well, and that reminds of our newest sponsor, Cameron's Window Making. Just let him know whatever you need. just want to make sure that when you're doing that one, you go pump it.
00:37:57
Torben Rothgeb
Pump it up. And then we made our way to Happy hobby. Is the dog still there? Oh, yeah. The dog is there. The dog loves Chad. Yes, that was funny. It would not leave Chad alone. would leave Chad alone.
00:38:12
Torben Rothgeb
We're talking about the big dog. yeah Oh, it was a big dog. Oh, yeah. I didn't buy a thing. i just i it got It was so cold in there. And so dark. felt like, is this like a set of a Sam Raimi movie or something? I mean, someone's going to come out of it. They're saving electricity. They're saving money for more kits. And it was... Did you buy anything there? I just bought a small handful of...
00:38:37
Torben Rothgeb
Micro mesh. policy Oh, this is the ones that Mulligan hates you for. Right. OK, got it. OK. Really? Oh, yeah. Why doesn't he like those? Well, he had asked Mulligan had asked Bob to look out for.
00:38:52
Torben Rothgeb
these certain ah grits of polishing cloths. And when when I saw the ones that they that they had at Happy Hobby, I asked what grits was it that Mulligan wanted?
00:39:09
Torben Rothgeb
Well, I don't think any of the ones he wanted were but what they had. right So I bought one of each the ones. mean, did push me down, but i mean, beyond that... no yeah it's fine It's funny with the RL going. oh Oh.
00:39:26
Torben Rothgeb
So a little bit later, Bob called and talked to Mulligan told him. This was at dinner. This was at dinner, right? Yeah. And told him that I had bought up all of the polishing cloths there. And he started cussing me out over for the speaker. We're in the room.
00:39:46
Torben Rothgeb
jim we're in a public place it wasn't with the fun godcha It was great. and Then we had lunch at Billy Sims Barbecue Place. Well, hold on. You did ask me what I bought. That would be a long list. where for good What did you buy? What did you get?
00:40:02
Torben Rothgeb
Well, you know, Happy Hobbies is so funny because they have some stuff. Most their stuff is way high and the other stuff are cheap. So they had the Mr. Hobby Primer Base Primer. This is great. Which was like $17 at Hub Hobby in Little Canada. They had that for $9.50. Oh, in the little bottles? No, the big spray one. Spray can. Really? The tall can. Wow. And so I bought a couple of those. Clearly mismarked. Clearly. And then he had um a couple of old MPC. He had three old MPC kits, but like $39 and $49 for got the
00:40:44
Torben Rothgeb
seventy nine mustang pace car And then I got um the Barracuda Pro Street, the orange version. They had the blue version, but i you know four kits is too much. so And I got another kit that is for my brother, so and he does listen to the show. So I won't... I won't say that. So you've got three kits.
00:41:10
Torben Rothgeb
One thing that I was pleasantly surprised is the paints, the tools, photo etch, things like that, the prices aren't as inflated there as the kits are. The thing that got me was that there's so many things on the floor. mean, you're just like on this little aisle of I can't find any the airplane kits because it's... It's hard to describe until you've been there. Until you've been there.
00:41:41
Torben Rothgeb
you know And it's just like... And the last time I was there, Torben made the most of it got down on the floor. And he actually bought... He was putting together some kits to buy. Yeah, no, i I got the good... It was like a monster truck and it was a 70s Dodge pickup truck. It was orange on the box. Yeah.
00:42:04
Torben Rothgeb
And that was 20. You know, so every once a while, there's some things there that are just like. Yeah. sorry They decide to actually let go out of the shop. I think they just forgot about it or didn't check or, you know. Yeah. It's always amazing.
00:42:20
Torben Rothgeb
yeah good and My favorite, the funniest one was around the corner. There's all these NASCAR kits and they're just like. common as dirt. they were on And they were $59, $69, $49, $39. I'm just like... The one that was only like fairly priced was they had a Sterling Marlin, but the 2001 Coors Dodge. And that was $40. And that's about what that is for those. yeah yeah yeah So we had fun at the show and then...
00:42:53
Torben Rothgeb
no karaoke. And then we went to the swap and both Torben and Cameron made quite a haul at the swap meet. And the swap meet was in a new place and it was great. Torben made the best idea. The best comment was it was small, but it was packed with people and packed with stuff.
00:43:10
Torben Rothgeb
And lots of, you know, good, unusual your New Year's resolution was not to buy. Yes, i know, I know. I must be mistaken. Yeah, you must be mistaken on that. Different year. But very surprisingly, I bought, I think I bought more than you did. You did buy a lot of kits. You did. No. Chad brought a couple too. I was,
00:43:33
Torben Rothgeb
Twisting his arm, but he bought a couple. he had good some good deals on some, and I bought a couple, and it was it was great. Yeah, I had that 69 Camaro or 67 Camaro pace car that I've only ever seen once or twice, and I've never seen with the box, ah in the box. And it was one of those things where I just looked at it just for my own entertainment, expecting to see 200, 300. And when I was it saw $75 on it, and I was just like, I couldn't get the money off it.
00:44:03
Torben Rothgeb
i mean, first I did have to take inventory. And it had all bumpers, chrome pieces, glass, everything important, body. And even for a convertible body, there's nothing. Because usually those convertibles would be smashed or side windows. It was in good shape.
00:44:22
Torben Rothgeb
yeah It was interesting. It was in a pool room. So a lot of guys had big blankets over the pool tables. Yes, it was all on these pool tables. And my my favorite moments, one of my favorites was guy had a whole bunch of starter NASCAR stuff on the table and a whole bunch of NASCAR magazines and stuff. And I'm like...
00:44:40
Torben Rothgeb
Corbin has just reached nirvana. Like he's come to the top of the hill. And he he says to me, oh I got all those except for one. ah Disappointment. you know thought Yeah. I got the Bobby Allison Torino. That's a golden white, like Dick Hutchinson paint scheme, number 29 car. Nice. You got a lot of nice simple formula one stuff. yeah You got a scarab that was mint. Right. Well,
00:45:07
Torben Rothgeb
but the The thing I remember most about the stuff I bought was ah i I don't know what came came on me, but I thought... got a fever! We may have go back and edit that. I actually bought a NASCAR kit. It was the old Johan Superbird. I didn't look through it. I wouldn't have known you know what was missing.
00:45:38
Torben Rothgeb
my that's what you know I would have been happy to take a look. but it was I think it was $30. That's that's a good price. yeah yeah that's why That's why I I've always liked the the two Or you could wait for the Salvinos one to come out. Like I'm still waiting for the Eberl, Ontario. Right, I mean, it was essential interesting because I just would see stuff. I mean, I'm an enabler, so I would see stuff for other people. It was great. Torben, come here.
00:46:08
Torben Rothgeb
No. Cameron, come here. Yeah. And there was a lot of stuff. to pick up. their The other favorite moment was guy had a bunch of Johan, old Johan kissing the original boxes. And there's DeSoto's, Plymouth's Dodgers. They were $35 piece.
00:46:23
Torben Rothgeb
I'm thinking, oh, I should take a picture of these just for certain people. was But I didn't. yeah So it was fun. that's fine And what I would say with a lot of the Wisconsin modelers, hey over the years, it it you know they've gotten friendlier a lot. from Maybe it's because there's fewer of us, too. Yeah.
00:46:45
Torben Rothgeb
the And the show was smaller. But, you know, Scott is just ah such a talker. oh He gets on the microphone, the emcee, and i' just please tell any story and roll with any story. Because it they gave one guy an award, but he was in the bar. so they had to wait. you wait and Scott can kill seven minutes with one story and this and that. So...
00:47:07
Torben Rothgeb
um Before I forget, Bob, I don't know if you feel comfortable sharing anonymously, of course. um It wasn't that.
00:47:20
Torben Rothgeb
but this getting good already It doesn't sound very anonymous when you're saying Bob. She had to go back and wait tables then. I'm talking about the person that was sharing this with with you. um Stories about because in 2024 IPMS Nationals was at Madison right and one of the guys that came up and started talking to Bob was one of the He was the organizer. He was the organizer of that of that national show. That was an interesting conversation because there's some from the financial viewpoint and from the IPMS political standpoint, what was what he would ever do it again or anything. It was it was pretty interesting.
00:48:09
Torben Rothgeb
It was a good conversation. Only if they stopped giving out all the awards during the dinner and never get to the doggone. Right. That will never change. Yeah. So anyway, it was great time. might in Vegas. Yeah.
00:48:24
Torben Rothgeb
Yeah. All right. What do we got, Jordan? moving on here. We only have another, what, hour and a half to go? Yeah. like Did you want to talk about the history of the Milwaukee show or not? Yeah, but first I got talk about, I just discovered a new NASCAR magazine. Who would have thought could? Really?
00:48:41
Torben Rothgeb
Yeah, it was Grand National Illustrated. When was called Grand National? You sure it's new? Well, that was before Winston Cup. Oh, wow. It's not new, though.
00:48:52
Torben Rothgeb
oh No, no. It's new to you. I mean, I wouldn't care if it was new, really. Right. no these are 80s 70s yeah wow those are pretty good men really good yeah i remember so many colored pictures and stuff like that no no so um no and then they had all the foldouts too was like yeah playboy centerfold only there's like three of them in there uh some them were lame but other ones are really good pictures of the cars and stuff like that so and ah know but And so he was, I wish I would have bought more, which rarely I do with with print material, but I only bought three of them and they're $3 a piece. I thought that was kind of rich, you know.
00:49:32
Torben Rothgeb
But then I got home and just for shits and Googles last night, I was like, well, look up and see if somebody's like selling a whole box of things for $10. But no, all of them were sold individually and all them were like $5 or more. okay. Okay.
00:49:47
Torben Rothgeb
okay But no. Interesting. um But yes, ah the history of the Milwaukee NNL. I think, Jim, you're the only one that was there at the first one, right? Circa 1993. Yeah, actually, first probably six or seven years I went okay to the to those. um It was kind of bittersweet when they started the NNL in Milwaukee because the inaugural, I believe it was the inaugural um show, it was the same...
00:50:17
Torben Rothgeb
weekend or the weekend before that Alan Kowitke had died. sorry And of course, you know, he's, he's lived, he was born and raised in, in, you know, Wisconsin. So yeah, it was, it was probably a pretty tough show to be at because everybody was pretty,
00:50:35
Torben Rothgeb
Still pretty shaken. Well, all thing that was one of my favorite scale auto, uh, not episodes issue issues. That's what I'm aware. Issues was the one where he was building cars for Alan Kowicki, Mike Dowd. Yep. Yep. The late, great Mike Dowd had, uh, had built every year for Alan Kowicki and he critiqued them. Um, and then even to this day, ah That's one of the things Glenn Janikowski had.
00:51:04
Torben Rothgeb
But he calls me Torvin. So I don't feel bad about Torvin. He went up to Bob, where's that Torvin guy? So I don't feel bad about mispronouncing his name. But maybe I'm not. Maybe I'm saying it right. just don't know. But um anyway, he yeah he built all of the Alan Kawicki winners. And he kind of stumped me.
00:51:26
Torben Rothgeb
Because he asked me, what what's in and what do all these cars have in common? And I'm looking at them. and It's like, well, obviously they're Alan Kowickie's, but it was every one of his wins. So even to this day, Alan Kowickie is really big there.
00:51:39
Torben Rothgeb
Oh, yeah. No, it's a big deal. And it was in a small room, I remember, in a hotel. It was very crowded. remember that. And, you almost too crowded. Very warm. Very warm. This is before the...
00:51:53
Torben Rothgeb
music maestros took over it took over the show right but it was it was it was the first year for music for music that they had oh no oh i don't know what year i think when they moved to the second yeah it was the other building it was never at this building because i went first year i remember it was 98 and it was in that really small stuffy room and then they went across the street to that karma is the carmack sound no it's still there it was like it was like a It was group.
00:52:24
Torben Rothgeb
It was like a daycare for older people. You know, like some of us could go. Nowadays, how could you tell? Not including yourself. Of course. But it was upstairs in it.
00:52:38
Torben Rothgeb
Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah. And then that's when we had the day of music time. But I mean, we had that. And then that was the second place. And then the third one, if you're into the history, third one during COVID was in a Greek restaurant.
00:52:54
Torben Rothgeb
um is in a Greek restaurant. And then the fourth one is the one where they have it now. And the Greek restaurant was one where Torben was doing Clint on...
00:53:06
Torben Rothgeb
long island iced teas which i remember distinctly but i thought i must not have been at that one i would have remembered that yeah that's scary because uh one of the reasons i i don't drink alcohol is i i was an eyewitness for two guys i worked with having a long island iced tea duel and um That's nothing to mess with. They have everything in there. Except for tea. what what um
00:53:39
Torben Rothgeb
it It was who could c chug a hole the fastest. a few minutes after they were done, one of the two guys... I looked at him, and he looked like he had just been smacked upside his head. He was, what did I do? um you so But it was the other guy who happened to be a lot younger that that got picked up by the cops on the way home um and ended up spending
00:54:11
Torben Rothgeb
a week weekend in the workhouse no And this this the tale he told of being in the workhouse where he was scared spitless the whole time. And was and and he said he he was so glad they never let him out out of his cell the whole time. So that he was at least safe. you Exactly. Because of...
00:54:41
Torben Rothgeb
stories that other people been there told him. He didn't want to go down the yard and get shanked. Well, worse than that. The group he he was in of new inmates for the weekend, walking in other longer term ah residents like wow were were ah not betting, but um commenting on the pretty mouth admirability of the new inmates. Well, let's move back to the history of the Milwaukee in and out. So Long Island Ice Team? Stay away. I think Clint tried to keep up with Dennis one year, too. He did, and he lost you badly.
00:55:33
Torben Rothgeb
Yeah. You don't want to drink against Canadians. It's always a fun show to go to. It was great. The four guys I went with were great. You guys were really fun. We had a blast. We did. Yeah, it was really fun.
00:55:45
Torben Rothgeb
Definitely ah want to go back next year with the band. Now we have to have – I need to get to work on the Tiny Car Podcast band. So John can take it with us. Hopefully he doesn't have to check his bag. and but I'm going to make sure I carry it. Okay. And then we can do the van team from Milwaukee. But there's more on the Milwaukee team. as Show rods.
00:56:09
Torben Rothgeb
That's true. Any chance of you getting a show rod dungeon? It's entirely possible. no Okay. I'm out. It's possible. I'm out. But I could rescue my T1 taxi. No, you couldn't. Isn't that a million pieces in the basement? <unk>s Well, you know, Mark Raleigh. Yeah.
00:56:29
Torben Rothgeb
It was was Mark Raleigh's. And I don't know if she has it or she gave it. Don scooped everything up. Oh, you gave it to Mark Raleigh? Yeah. but Okay. Yeah. So who knows?
00:56:41
Torben Rothgeb
Time will tell. Time will tell. Yeah. All right. Well, with that behind us, it's time to hear about the new releases. um The one I saw today was the John Wick 69 Mustang. And I, you know, not even thinking much about it. I built a 69 Mustang and so probably don't want to build another one.
00:57:03
Torben Rothgeb
But I built the new Revell one and I wasn't even thinking about it. But they said a new tool body because it's AMT. Yeah. um So i'll be that's probably the most interesting thing to see what is the new body. Actually, a much improvement, big improvement on the, because they had the AMT one out for for a long time, right?
00:57:28
Torben Rothgeb
Well, the original AMT 69 Mustang was set the bar, I think, for them back in that era. Was that a nice kit? Yeah, it was it was rather expensive, you know, nowadays. Okay.
00:57:42
Torben Rothgeb
But yeah, no, it was, you know, using the original original blueprints. Oh, wow. AMT had like a, that was one of their shtick things, you know, where they, you open up the instruction sheet and it had, you know, all of the drawings and oh wow cutaways and stuff. It was kind of interesting.
00:58:04
Torben Rothgeb
but uh but anyway so yeah the 72 chevelle that was uh driven by bobby singer in supernatural right that's the one i was telling you about that's the it's kind of a weathered uh beat up yeah 72 chevelle don't know if they're going to show you how to do the weathering or not but not great uh version of that car either Yeah, it's the MPC one. It's got some some issues on that. A 27 Ford um with 2-1-1, I think.
00:58:39
Torben Rothgeb
Yeah, it's a repop. it's It's actually been out a few times. And the Silhouette. Right, and that's the Hot Wheels version, so it'll be the... modeled after the actual hot wheels okay they're they're doing a whole series of hot wheels cars know with the kits uh-huh well speaking of that looks like you have uh yeah so yeah there's there's this one which has it's been announced but don't know what it's coming out so that's a hot wheels 55 chevy based on the two-door post kit that they did bill's got this in his model room
00:59:14
Torben Rothgeb
He has a whole wall of 55 Chevy Hot Wheels. collects 55. That's his big thing. Wasn't there a movie called Candy Stripe Nurses or something like that? That was Cinemax After Dark, I think. I do remember that one. Oh, but you just brought it up. Yes, yes. I did the soundtrack for that. I'll bet you did.
00:59:46
Torben Rothgeb
Here's another one that I'm still stumped on that you seem to think that somebody told me that they did make fiber. Yes, my brother built one. It orange on the cut of the box, and it was just a generic one.
00:59:58
Torben Rothgeb
Screaming Eagle? So this is the 250th anniversary. So you got that. Another fictitious pickup. And this one you'll get really excited about.
01:00:10
Torben Rothgeb
And you're big Motorhead fan. The Ice of Spikes. The Ice of Spikes. It's a Motorhead. Motorhead Camaro. 70 and a half Camaro. You could do a Trans Am car with that. But this is with the Bumper X and not the straight bumper. Right. That's the Deluxe or whatever. Okay.
01:00:27
Torben Rothgeb
and we have the Then we have the, this is the two, I printed out, the Pinto, and then that's the. Is it the square light or round light one here?
01:00:38
Torben Rothgeb
i po because that's I believe it's the square. no Because I feel like they re-released that not too long ago. And then. That's the 30 seconds. Yeah, that's the 30 seconds. Oh, is it?
01:00:50
Torben Rothgeb
Yeah. Is that a four? Are you sure it's 30 seconds, though?
01:00:55
Torben Rothgeb
Anyway, it doesn't actually count. That looks like it's based on the coyote. Yeah, that's what I thought it was. Yeah, yeah okay. It's the it's a coyote with camteria with golf livery. Oh, okay, I see. This is the one I was telling you about. It's got the portholes and the windows. Yeah.
01:01:19
Torben Rothgeb
My brother attempted this at least twice. I feel old. You are old. So am Jim's got even more now. Oh, wait. There's more. Oh, wait. There's more. This is what is anticipated.
01:01:35
Torben Rothgeb
And this has not been out for a long time, I think. Right. That's the 63 Tempest. Or is it new tool? It's a new tool, but it's it's you know it's from their new 3D printing that they do or whatever.
01:01:50
Torben Rothgeb
okay. So it's similar to the Nova wagon and some of that stuff. okay And I always save the best for last, and this one's just for Bob. Okay. Well, this is a new market they're going after, and I'm sure you'll be intrigued. This is My Little Pony. This is a 1996 Mustang GT snap kit, probably pre-painted. I like the eyelashes on lights. I like the pink. What are those?
01:02:20
Torben Rothgeb
The wings on them. Unicorns. Unicorns, yeah. yeah yeah I remember my daughter had lots of my little ponies, yes. They had a lot little ponies. Your daughter might actually get into modeling. Yeah, I guess we'll get her there. Yeah, absolutely. Well, that's great. Father-daughter build. Yeah, that's right. Yeah, father-daughter build. Yeah, great. I'd pay to see that. would. Yeah.
01:02:43
Torben Rothgeb
I think I could get at other people interested in throwing in money in the till. I see you got new kits over there. Yes, new kits. These are new kits on the block. Yes. well Future builds that are on the docket. Well, more in my plan to downsize.
01:03:06
Torben Rothgeb
oh oh What? What? on what What? i'm umm this a revelation I'm getting out of the, yes, another revelation. yes I'm getting out of the, yeah I think the Salvagnos Builders Club. It's nothing personal with them. i wanted to support them. but You know, they're listening.
01:03:23
Torben Rothgeb
I know. no, they're not now because that this is actually the Tuesday night show that's going on. Oh, so you're competing against them. I'm going up against, yeah. Wow. It's a lot of... NBC Thursday night lineup that we're going up against. But, no, obviously I have more kits than I could ever build.
01:03:46
Torben Rothgeb
Yeah, I think. But before I got out of the club, You know, these Indy kits go for $80. But if you're in the club, you get free shipping and they have the builder score store. And this was $51. So I figured I'd get that. Oh, for what? The Castaneda's car? And then the new, since they had that the new Petty car, which a good car to end on, and then get out of it before they send me that. And nothing against Ronnie Thomas because he's a very nice, likable guy.
01:04:15
Torben Rothgeb
um He was a rookie of the year in 78, I think. great storyteller they had him on the show a couple of times um talking about old school nascar but uh the problem is the kit they're doing is is that monte carlo that just takes so much work the 73 to 77 yeah yeah one of the premier motorcycle builders oh yeah three women the towel on the salvinia Monte Carlo. So, no. Yeah, the Ilio Kastornavich. It's a four-time winning one. Only three four-time winners. Brittonaires, AJ, and Ilio Kastornavich. And four. Four. And a loan, sir, yes. But, yeah, it looks pretty straightforward. I think it's molded in black, and you put the pink decals on. I think we should open it
01:05:11
Torben Rothgeb
yeah Got an exacto handy there, John? Well, you know what? If you just did it, you know, you and I built these. They weren't a joy and a half, but, you know, what the heck? Do it a second time would probably be a lot easier. Do that to me one more time. And I like that the yeah the suspension components are black um so that it hides a little more. You can sand it and paint it a little more. see those carbon fiber decals on it, baby. Yes. Yeah. Yeah, that too. Now, what you guys used a Tamiya color to replicate some of that, didn't you?
01:05:52
Torben Rothgeb
what What did Eric say is the best for doing carbon fiber? A dark gun metal. Dark gun metals. But anything on... but Even on the one I built, they provided... a car There was a ton of carbon fiber decals in the cab. Yeah. No, that's always been the best thing about sucension Salvinos. Yeah, with the Penske cars.
01:06:14
Torben Rothgeb
And actually, I think I went back and redid it later because the chrome... Because you can't, and especially with this particular kit, maybe the way I did it, you had to constantly kind of touch it to get it to sit right. But then the chrome has worn off by them. and so Yeah. Oh, cool. Yeah.
01:06:34
Torben Rothgeb
So, yeah. And so, yeah, hopefully get out of that and not getting more kits. Hopefully, yes. I'm looking forward to hearing throughout the summer of your podcast.
01:06:46
Torben Rothgeb
downsizing i'm um yes if we want progress on that every month when you know it'll be a work in progress it will be there isn't an l coming up you could like i mean you could get a table you could sell it yes yes at our show speaking of shows ours is in less than two weeks yes yes yeah what's the matter john keep reminding me what now what does scott have you doing um you have He just has me taking pictures. but Oh, Oh, he's covering the event.
01:07:18
Torben Rothgeb
Well, he just wants to know why I haven't sent anything in for... Nobody sent it. When is the deadline? I think the 13th. Okay, so I still can register online. Oh, yeah, you got it until next week sometime. can wait until the 13th to
01:07:34
Torben Rothgeb
If you wait long enough, he'll just write it for you. Right? Don't you have this image of Scott checking his thing there and getting on there? Stop.
01:07:47
Torben Rothgeb
Yeah, I know this computer. A lot of F-bombs. Yes. Quite a few of them. lot of F-bombs. yeah What's this 32 Chevy ice cream truck? Okay, well, you know, speaking of going to new genres, they have um one. I think the video game was Twisted Metal or something where they had this crazy guy. That's coming out in the near future. You know, as fast as time goes, we can go a little bit ahead.
01:08:10
Torben Rothgeb
ah The 72 Chevy pickup, but it has a short bed because of all the versions of those have been the long bed or the race hauler. cool I'm guessing that tool is probably new for the box.
01:08:22
Torben Rothgeb
Yeah, yeah. And then the 81 Camaro street machine that was last released the 89. Yeah, it was supposed to be out a couple of years ago. And I don't know, something happened or they lost them all. They're...
01:08:37
Torben Rothgeb
yeah But, yeah, that will be that'll be a welcome addition. Yeah, so back to the NNL North. Anything else that we should talk about? We don't have a theme, but the MCCM Club, ah which I'm proud to be a part of as well, they have the movie car theme. Yep, TVs and movie cars.
01:08:56
Torben Rothgeb
Yeah, that's a special award that they give out. Yes. yeah now um Usually it's the biggest thing. award of the show that Bob can't really carry it. It takes, you know, Leroy and Posable Paul have to help carry the trophy into the room. And we have the and we have the nice the new MC, c too, who really who took it up a notch.
01:09:23
Torben Rothgeb
You know, the awards maestro. Well, our emcee will always be Bob. He is the emcee. Last time it was you. Did you have bring that? The last two shows were. He's taken over the reins. graciously dropped the mic right in front of him. It's his. It's forever Torben's. It's forever his. And we've got an RPM Best Competition Award.
01:09:47
Torben Rothgeb
Victor DiMici handed me an award at Milwaukee to give out for... Style and innovation. Pick out a model that has epitomized the style innovation. It's really a heavy.
01:09:58
Torben Rothgeb
You almost dropped it. I thought you were going to fall over. it was What did he make it I don't know, but it's really heavy. You're going to put it next to a car. You're going to put it on top of a car. so And then Bob Halliday gives out an award. And I don't know if our Canadian friends are coming or not.
01:10:14
Torben Rothgeb
ah No, they're not. okay they're not okay So there isn't a Canadian award. There's not a best road card. But it's a great show and we'll look forward to it. so now um Now, Victor was like giving you some suggestions. So it's Because, yeah, he wants you to pick it. Well, I'll get group of people. What he considered. Style and innovation. So Victor's a very unique builder. a very good builder.
01:10:38
Torben Rothgeb
He builds very interesting and far out things. So and that's kind of what he's looking for. So you can you know the that. So we'll go with it, you know. So he pointed out a couple of miles of Milwaukee that fit right into that category. So good luck.
01:10:53
Torben Rothgeb
Good luck. right Yeah. Yeah. Well, you know, like ah Andy's motorcycle or, you know, the kind of stuff that's just. We're also going to. Maybe the rock climber. People that are going to show up for the show.
01:11:05
Torben Rothgeb
um Frank. And Francis and Kate and Marty are coming, right? yeah Yes. So those that'll be a welcome addition. It will be a welcome addition. And then Iceman Collectible, or Iceman, has donated some 3D printed items for the raffle that excellent that are very nice. so what did you Did you look at them? Yes. They're right over there. All right. Well, do tell. What what was there? Well, there's several engines, engine kits, and um there's ah This is like pre-production, I believe, but they're doing some figures for the Home Alone series.
New Model Kits & Aftermarket Business Insights
01:11:44
Torben Rothgeb
In 125th scale, I'm sure Bob, or I should say Tom Hoffman and Pat will Grab a couple. Grab a couple. Yeah, they have some new figures coming out. Right. That must be what it is. That'd be great if they had a diorama that had, what was it when he had the paint can swing and hit the guy? If you could attach it to one of those motion things that just went like that. And kept hitting him. Yes.
01:12:07
Torben Rothgeb
But there's some trans kits for for Mustangs, like a body kit that you can, you know, they have spoilers and wings and that kind of thing to add to the ster the kit. Steeda? Yes. Yep.
01:12:20
Torben Rothgeb
Yeah, they look really nice. yeah Cool. hit The box art, they do a really nice job packaging and ah promoting the the the company. So um I'm sure they'll be well-received. He's the nicest guy. Yeah, he's a really great guy. Just...
01:12:34
Torben Rothgeb
down to earth. You know, they send out a newsletter, you know, like an updated newsletter and they all they'll say like, hi, Jim. How did you know that was my name? You know, so it's it's it's a nice ah company.
01:12:49
Torben Rothgeb
And he works like a dog. You know, he's got his aftermarket business and then he has a full-time job. I know what that's like. It's not easy to do.
Model Contest Issues & Anecdotes
01:12:59
Torben Rothgeb
No. So, um anyway, I'd like to go down to that show down there like the you know you have a contest and stuff what in phoenix yeah oh the what do they call it well there's one coming up and then they have the ipms show the one coming up desert scale classic yeah that's someone that's been around for a long time too yeah and it keeps getting worse oh really oh everybody's entitled to their own opinion you know they have
01:13:29
Torben Rothgeb
there Is Lucas C there? I don't know. They will pick up your model and look underneath. the Oh, that's what you tell me. That's like a no-no. They're proud of the fact that they do that. What?
01:13:41
Torben Rothgeb
i' have seen I have seen more guys that I've talked to that will not come back to that show because their models have been damaged by these guys. Oh, that's silly. Why would you do that? stupid Because we're except for the the greater Salt Lake, we're the only ones that look underneath. It's like,
01:13:57
Torben Rothgeb
do to that don't get me going i thought you were going to say we're we're professionals that's weird we're professionals so we can pick them up no it's yeah i the last time that's that's that's one of those unwritten rules you just don't know don't touch 962 which and i was like oh it's flat on the bottom that's what happened to me the first time i went to it yeah right he's going through the hot rods and he gets to my car he picks it up and he looks at him it's like What the hell? It's just flat. Well, that's what the car was, dude. They destroyed a Ferrari GP car the last time I was there. my God. I would never put a show up that day. It was beautiful. Well, you didn't even accept that from a Hall of Famer when Jack Morris picked up your car and dropped your hood. That's true. I was upset by that. Actually, my friend, Brian, what he wanted to do was make a model that when you pick it up, it falls apart. That would be. No, he's having some family things. Okay, well, that's too bad. He told me he wasn't, so we'll see if it changes. Okay. I thought that would be great if he did that. That'd be a great one.
Summer Plans & Nationals Anticipation
01:15:08
Torben Rothgeb
Or have so it's glued to something. Well, there was there was there was someone that used to be in our club that um wanted all his cars to roll. Oh, God, yes.
01:15:21
Torben Rothgeb
Not Buddy. What was name? Larry. larry yeah Larry. I remember Larry, yes. Very proud of being able to broom his car. And scare weight. there was Yeah, he wanted to be able to drop it off the table and it would be okay it would still survive. Okay. Still tough. Too much time on his hands.
01:15:40
Torben Rothgeb
go Unless you want us to sing a stick song. Oh, no, no, no. I wasn't trying to get you to sing. Please don't. It's feeling Dennis DeYoung there. So where are we now?
01:15:51
Torben Rothgeb
We are up to summer. Well, summer plans. ah Looking forward to summer and thinking about any projects you have for the summer. And then with nationals. ah We skipped the question of the month.
01:16:05
Torben Rothgeb
We can go back. It's not written in stone. He's the host here. Come on, John. yeah on what yeah but no Anything that you're looking forward to trying to get done for Nationals or you're what you're going to take?
01:16:19
Torben Rothgeb
I'd love to get my 787B done. Yes. 787B. How many hours you think you got ahead of that? Oh, dear God, how many have I got in it? Dear God, it's just, I don't know, it keeps growing. I've got the engine wired now.
01:16:36
Torben Rothgeb
Oh, all right. But there's all sorts of stuff that has to go into it. So I've got this fire, might as well. mean, for as old as the kit is, it's not a bad kit. But how old is the kit?
01:16:47
Torben Rothgeb
Oh, the 7, to me, they came out with that. Not that long after the race. right Yeah, it was it's old. 93, probably. For that time, it's it's fantastic. But there's stuff that you're supposed to, how you fit the back end. And it's also got a little thing coming from the engine that has to go through a hole.
01:17:05
Torben Rothgeb
you the don't know how they're going to fit that. In the body work. Yeah, I'll worry about that when I get to it. Okay. I've seen this in progress. It looks nice though. Especially if you have all the wiring in that.
01:17:18
Torben Rothgeb
Well, yeah, you want to be able to take it off to see it. In fact, if you take it off, then you just leave it and nobody will know that it doesn't fit. Yeah, I think a lot of people do that. That's exactly what you do.
01:17:29
Torben Rothgeb
Good idea. That's the lemonade principle. If you can't get it back together, just make it Right, exactly. All right, Cameron, what do you Looking forward to finish finish um finish finishing the Momo card um so that I could start, i unbox my year old at plus 3D printer.
01:17:59
Torben Rothgeb
Just getting anything finished. That's that's all i I want to do. Okay. Cool. And you, Bob? Yeah.
01:18:10
Torben Rothgeb
I've got the um
01:18:14
Torben Rothgeb
got a Mach-E 202 airplane done that I wanted to get done for it. I'm not that thrilled with it, but it'll be okay. We'll see. I'd like to get the Lancia S4 done. It's our 80s race car theme. I'd like to get that done. and That's going to be pretty detailed. So I'll work on that.
01:18:28
Torben Rothgeb
Rally card. How about you? Well, I'm going to try to have that K&K Dodge Daytona done. All right. one yep There it is. God, that's all you have left to do? There's a lot more left to do.
01:18:45
Torben Rothgeb
I have my favorite part, painting, hat but no, it's a lot of other stuff. And whenever you're kit bashing that much, you always have your fingers crossed. It's going to fit.
01:18:57
Torben Rothgeb
Mr. Cantlin? So I won't actually probably be going to the nationals. Oh, well, it's, you know, there's other stuff going on in my world. So, um, but actually, I have a project that, uh, someone's bugging me to build because it, he owned a car at one time, but it's, it's going to fit the Lincoln show, you know, when we're going to Lincoln for the grand opening, but it's the, um, it's an Ed Roth, uh, road agent.
01:19:28
Torben Rothgeb
Hmm. ah with the story of display and everything. And there's a guy actually on YouTube that did one that turned out really well and and it kind of got me interested i've always wanted to try to use that createx acrylic paint and i've been talking to him about it and and it sounds like fun so i'm gonna go for it take take a stab at it it's the only color i could find to match the car blue boy e etc isn't it blue boy he's does he really he's okay
01:19:59
Torben Rothgeb
Yeah, this is a magenta pearl that the color is. So anyway, so yeah, I'm going to try that. I've already got the engine done and some of those things. It's pretty much out of the box. Cool. But yeah, it should be fun.
01:20:12
Torben Rothgeb
Well, that just reminded me of Chad Trust who went to Milwaukee with us. um was talking to Mario. hey they They bounce ideas. Mario is a fantastic custom car painter. yeah He's really good.
01:20:26
Torben Rothgeb
yeah and Anyway, he was saying that Mario... know does his own color shift paint. What? I felt like this was like some supernatural stuff. Could be. And he told me, i i'm not the world's best listener, but I can't, he said that somehow he has devised a way to make his own color shift paint that Mario does. But yeah. yeah So who's not the world's best listener?
01:20:57
Torben Rothgeb
Me. Oh, I will over-lay. Really? Leah would really agree with She would have. You just asked her. She's not here, so that doesn't count. That's okay. I've gone to the strategy of asking every kid in the house if it's something, because if I have to ask Leah, I know I've told you this three times. You're lucky she doesn't listen to this. I think I'm in the same boat, so I have nothing to worry about.
Model Building Tips & Paint Colors
01:21:24
Torben Rothgeb
Oh, Lord. All right. All right. Well, we did. Thank you for pointing that out. It's what we have you on here.
01:21:31
Torben Rothgeb
Detail. Detail. Precision dentist skills. Whoa. were to point out that we had gone past the question of the month. That's okay. We can keep going. No, we're doing favorite. Favorite and least favorite stage of monocardial. That's easy. Want to start them, Drew? You want start? Okay.
01:21:51
Torben Rothgeb
the the east The best part of the build is starting the project. Are you kidding? Yeah. Right. So doing the planning, the photo references, any aftermarket stuff. Aftermarket. Aftermarket. Yes. Doing research, hand tint. That's the funnest, right? Yeah. You'd probably argue about that, right? The Oracle.
01:22:17
Torben Rothgeb
Yeah, right. I mean, it's I'd say the least is... is, you know, bare metal, the paint, you know, all that stuff. You know, degree of difficulty. Is it a Salvino's kit? ah Not to name names. No, no, no, no.
01:22:34
Torben Rothgeb
Yeah, well, there's plenty of others that could go along with them well. I know you'll defend them to the end. am not defend. I appreciate being able to have new stuff. Like when I go to the Indy 500, if I see a race winner that looks cool enough, I could. Probably won't, but could go home and build it. You could. So appreciate that. that What about you, Torvin?
01:22:59
Torben Rothgeb
Let's see. um My favorite part is painting. I love painting. I just like seeing how it, and even the polishing part, I kind of get into my own mindset. And thank you to all the tips John gave me with the 3,000, 5,000, just being able to swirl that when you're polishing. You just follow them. Yes, it's like meditating. New age music in the background.
01:23:27
Torben Rothgeb
i don't go that far. Oh, God, God. Why not? And then I would say ah my least favorite, other than filling out paperwork at the shows, would would be ah the assembling of it.
01:23:42
Torben Rothgeb
Because I feel like, and I usually try to paint the car first so I have something that's gonna be worth my work and stuff like that with a ah good paint job but then you get to that point and and it is polished out and decaled and then it can only go wrong from here you know i got everything painted the way i want and it's i'm only going get screwed up from here so um Yeah. And obviously, ah i should probably ah build more well-engineered, more Tamiya kits. And then maybe assembly wouldn't be my least. Model
01:24:20
Torben Rothgeb
yeah find model factory hero. No, you don't want that. You don't want to go down that road. No. ah For me, the favorite is what Echor Jim says is your...
01:24:31
Torben Rothgeb
is the planning and writing. I write sit down and write a lot of stuff out. What's it going to do to each other? And your enthusiasm is at a high point. yeah Like, oh, this is going to be great. It's as high as it's going to go. That's right. And the least for me is the final assembly because I know I'm going to screw something up.
01:24:49
Torben Rothgeb
I know it's going to be something like, oh, I forgot to do that. I forgot. it So that it's always a letdown when I finish a model, but it always is exciting. It's almost always a letdown cycle.
01:25:01
Torben Rothgeb
This didn't turn out just the way I wanted it to. So anyway, that's it. Well, and the exciting part is almost the fact that you're done with this and you get to start a new one. Yeah, exactly.
01:25:13
Torben Rothgeb
well that That's real sentient as far as my favorite part of of building is the decals because you're almost done with it.
01:25:30
Torben Rothgeb
And my least favorite would be sanding. If I've got to fill gaps or or anything, I just... always have trouble. So I never look forward to the sanding. No, sanding and the putty.
01:25:49
Torben Rothgeb
yeah You know, whatever. That just seems like it always shrinks it back up and it's more just like, yeah. Oh, me? Well, i I do go with, I do like the research. i have got photos.
01:26:03
Torben Rothgeb
The 787, I probably have 150 photos because how detailed you want to make it well. You want to know what it looks like. I do like that, but I love decaling.
01:26:14
Torben Rothgeb
You do. Your models are yeah full of decals. Yes. You could tell. You could tell, yes. Well, especially if they're cartographed. Well, these aren't cartographs. No, I know, but that's that's kind of a no-brainer, but it's it's a gift. Well, poet there's some that I always buy.
01:26:31
Torben Rothgeb
My friend Bill, he said, you always buy it. The first time, the day I met him, he said, buy two sets of decals. Why are you buying two sets? Because, and I've always bought two sets now, because sure enough, something's going to happen. And this way...
01:26:44
Torben Rothgeb
I can fix it. So, yeah. Sometimes you have to order three because the decals are so crap that well not to name names. Yeah. no no name If I talk about that company, probably I think I have a personal vendetta, but, uh, well, that's cool.

Torben Rothgeb
but that's cool No, I like decaling too. And especially with the hairdryer since doing the hairdryer. Um, oh yeah that really just, because I always used to, I'm just going to move it. Then the whole thing moves an inch and stuff like that. But the hairdryer just allows you to put it in place and then just blow all the water out there.
01:27:21
Torben Rothgeb
So, All right. Well, ah that brings us up to our super six, but we do have two this this time since we have all these wonderful guests here.
01:27:35
Torben Rothgeb
um But we have the first one is a favorite factory paint colors. And if if you want to volunteer the car that you would put it on, you can do that as well.
01:27:48
Torben Rothgeb
Okay. It's easy. So why don't we start with ah with Jim? See what color you come up with. See what color I come with. Is it that hard? I see your true color. You were waiting to use that song. You knew you were going to So it would it would be Mopar, obviously. A high impact color?
01:28:14
Torben Rothgeb
Well, of course. Okay. Yeah. But there was there were so many. I mean, I couldn't narrow it down to just one. But I mean, just the fact if you had bumblebee stripes or, you know, color choices, you know, they had unique names for all the paint colors that they did in the early 70s.
01:28:31
Torben Rothgeb
You know, um Curious Yellow, Vitamin They just had a lot of fun with what they did. Yeah, Plum Crazy. Sublime. You know, and they had a lot of options too, which isn't paint colors, but it's um It was an attraction for people to come in the showroom and look at the stuff.
01:28:51
Torben Rothgeb
But yeah, that was always my favorite. Plus, you know, they had a racing influence too. you know, with the AR Cuda and the Trans Am Mustangs and all that stuff too. So, you know, it kind of falls into that same era of muscle cars, you know?
01:29:10
Torben Rothgeb
Yeah, well, I think for color matches too, almost think that Marty Robbins' Daytona is Panther Pink. It probably is. And then I feel like the 99 Charlie Glotzbach Daytona was plump crazy.
01:29:25
Torben Rothgeb
and It looked like it, but... um Okay. Well, ah yeah, I'll go along the same lines. i'll I'll name one of those. I'll do, I was like the Go Mango. Oh, yeah from yeah. Well, you had mentioned the, when you were talking about it, I think that, what was it, the GTO?
01:29:43
Torben Rothgeb
Yes. um I'm going to save that one because we need six, right? Right. Well, I'm going to scoop Torben. And I'm not as knowledgeable about a lot of the factory paint colors, but the one that struck me was Hindenburg. I had one of the GTOs at my school when I was in high school, the orange one.
01:30:01
Torben Rothgeb
Orbital Orange. Man, it was it popped. It was really cool. Because it had you the bumpers were all that color and everything. It was really cool. son Well, I'm going have to...
01:30:12
Torben Rothgeb
decline to participate in because other than the one or two that I did when I was first starting model buildings 55 plus years ago, I have not built a non race car Okay. until Until I built that 40 Ford for the club display a couple of years ago.
01:30:41
Torben Rothgeb
So as far as factory colors, I have no
Memorable Racing Seasons Discussion
01:30:46
Torben Rothgeb
idea. no don't And you've never even seen a one-to-one car that you really like that color. Right. Okay. All right.
01:30:54
Torben Rothgeb
Ipanema Brown. It's an Audi color from like 15 years ago. Really? It was the favorite color of the guy who... At a Audi. Oh, really? Yeah, the car painted that. But was a special order color.
01:31:08
Torben Rothgeb
A guy in eton in the UK said it looked like baby poop. Yeah. But he called it Ipanema? Ipanema Brown, yeah. Like the girl from, mean? yeah it was was an orange.
01:31:22
Torben Rothgeb
or Oh, okay. Really? Yeah. Like a burnt orange. Interesting. favorite color. what made it your favorite color well well how do you i ordered an s4 in that color it was just great looking and interesting in fact my sister still has the car wow wow all
01:31:43
Torben Rothgeb
all right so do we want to you guys think you can come up with six i can't come up kill no anybody else you want to volunteer six what colors factory colors six colors of six I'll tell you. Okay, I'll ah Carousel Red on a 69 GTO. It's classic.
01:32:02
Torben Rothgeb
um Staying with red or orange-ish, I'll go with the Hugger Orange. It's a really cool color. um V5 Blue is a really great color.
01:32:16
Torben Rothgeb
Artesian Turquoise, like on a 70 Monte Carlo. I think Daytona even had one of those Dodge Daytonas. They had them in so many colors. um All right. I think that's that's about. My only a addition would be the 50s Chevys.
01:32:33
Torben Rothgeb
Probably that had the really cool two tones. Two tones, yeah. Yeah, with with the aqua or the turquoise and like a. white and that always is really cool yeah yeah that just the interiors and everything just was at a new level in 50s and into the 60s really cool really cool um yep uh i know there's a few colors i'm leaving out but uh you know i can't remember everything i guess All right, moving on to, you know, with the, you know, Tyler Reddick having such a good year. And then just thinking back to the past with especially having the Oracle on board and come up with the six no best right driving seasons of all time.
01:33:21
Torben Rothgeb
um You want me to first with NASCAR? Okay. Well, you know, 67, Richard Petty won 27 races, 10 in a row. That would have to be considered great.
01:33:35
Torben Rothgeb
um The most wins in the modern era were both ah Petty and Jeff Gordon. Gordon won 13 races in 98. Yeah.
01:33:45
Torben Rothgeb
And, you know, at one point, I think went pretty much the whole summer would like he had one seventh and then all top five finishes. So he's really consistent as well. um So and then – The year Bill Elliott won the million dollars, where the first time that the tobacco, Winston was offering the Winston million for winning three out of the four NASCAR races. at The Daytona 500, the Coca-Cola Southern and then
01:34:23
Torben Rothgeb
one of the tallta races And then he he won Winston Million and got on the cover of Sports Illustrated, which takes a lot for a NASCAR driver. um So those those are certainly up there.
01:34:36
Torben Rothgeb
um Earnhardt's best season, I guess he won 11 races in 86. Wow. and eighty six Leroy Yarborough won the Winston Million before they had the Winston Million in 1969. He won the Daytona and another three of the four.
01:34:55
Torben Rothgeb
And so he had a great season. So, ah yeah, lots of great NASCAR seasons. um Who wants to go next? Mark Donahue. Trans Am. oh yeah you and sha And Can Am. yeah yeah And just unstoppable. Between Penske and him. Absolutely. ah sorry Cameron, don't let us down here.
01:35:24
Torben Rothgeb
Well, I still haven't come up with six, but... Go for it. First, I would say... Michael Schumacher's and I can't remember if it's 2003 or 2004. One of those. The dominant year?
01:35:46
Torben Rothgeb
The dominant year. Four. Four. Where he he was on the podium in every race that year. And that's never been done before before since. So...
01:36:02
Torben Rothgeb
so ah After that, I'd say jim Clark's 1965 season, because not only did he dominate and win the Formula One World Drivers' Championship, he also won the 500. won the...
01:36:25
Torben Rothgeb
i the Australian and New Zealand Tasman series. He won but a European Formula Two championship and the French Formula Two championship. So nobody's done anything like that before. And ah Verstappen's 2024 season, 2023, where almost won every race that twenty twenty
01:36:56
Torben Rothgeb
four season twenty twenty three um where he almost won every race that season home and And considering that there's 20 some races, that's pretty pretty darn impressive. And a i finally remembered...
01:37:24
Torben Rothgeb
1952 and 53 Formula One World Championship, but Alberto Oscar, he won both of those. And as far as it being one of the group the best driving seasons, that those were the seasons.
01:37:41
Torben Rothgeb
uh, spanning those seasons, he won nine formula one Grand Prix in a row, um, that record wasn't beat for over 50 some years until, Sebastian battle finally, did it not too long ago.
01:38:01
Torben Rothgeb
And, uh, um,
01:38:06
Torben Rothgeb
there was There was one other, championship, world drivers champion, mainly on the German Grand Prix, which is considered by many people to be the best driving performance in the history of Formula With the German Grand Prix. Now, what made it?
01:38:39
Torben Rothgeb
that It was on the Nürburgring, which is the by far the most difficult circuit in the world. There 167 corners. miles. Yeah,
01:38:59
Torben Rothgeb
he started out in his maserati um he He decided to start with half fuel tank and ah because he he knew with half fuel tank, he could go faster than everybody else, build up a big lead and halfway through the race, stop for fuel and tires and hopefully come out and still be in the lead and win the race. Well, his pit stop was terrible.
01:39:38
Torben Rothgeb
And he fell over a minute behind the leaders. And in the last eight, nine laps of the race, he broke the lap record, set a new lap record on almost every lap.
01:39:57
Torben Rothgeb
And he caught and passed the lead
01:40:03
Torben Rothgeb
Even they the the guys he beat cheered him on after that. Classic race.
01:40:13
Torben Rothgeb
I can't compete with that. Are you kidding me? You're out No, it's okay. I can't come up with six. I can come up with something enough. I mean, I would say one of the McLaren Can-Am series years, probably the M8B season where they went every race.
01:40:32
Torben Rothgeb
I could throw in the 70 Trans Am. Oh, yeah. the du Oh, yeah. That's a classic. Parnelli and George Fulmer. Yeah. That's a great one. um Whereas Torben, I mean, Cameron went for like dominant seasons. I think some of the best ones are just really close ones. Right. The 2008 one when Hamilton won the title and the one of the last turns of the race. um That was a fantastic season.
01:40:59
Torben Rothgeb
um the first time Michael Schumacher won one for Ferrari in 2000, which was a great great one. um You took the Jim Clark one.
01:41:10
Torben Rothgeb
um Damn you. Anyway, what do you mean? Well, you can still choose it. can still choose it, yeah. The 65 season was amazing because you won everything you could possibly win. Right.
01:41:22
Torben Rothgeb
And ah yeah that's that's one's i come but there's lots of really close ones that were great, but that was some of my favorites, so.
01:41:31
Torben Rothgeb
Yes. that you got any You're our drag racing. Yeah. yeah um I know ah Snake, Don Perdomo, had a really great season in Mongroos Funny Car.
01:41:46
Torben Rothgeb
Obviously, what was the pros? Bob Glidden. Yeah. Yeah. Ten-time champion. Right. What year stuck out as his best year?
01:41:59
Torben Rothgeb
Well, he had several, but one that I recall that's never been done was um there was a season when they were trying to – they're always trying to take advantage of rules. No.
01:42:12
Torben Rothgeb
And so he built a Ford Fairmont Pro Stock. It took him like two weeks to build it. And in the time that he actually raced the car, it was never defeated.
01:42:24
Torben Rothgeb
Oh, wow. Which has never been done. well And never been repeated. But, yeah, it was – And it wasn't even close. And then he came back the next year with a factory-backed Plymouth Aero Pro Stock, developed his own heads for the engine, and won the season in 1979, which was, you know, never to to come up with a completely different engine package and everything.
01:42:52
Torben Rothgeb
um And he would have kept running it, but Chrysler pulled out of... of pro stock at that point. So he was on his own financially. So, yeah, no, there's, there's been playing, you know, Don Garlitz, um, you know, has won several championships and, you know, is the goat or whatever you want to call it. So, you know, but it's different, you know because it's drag racing, not, you know, mm-hmm.
01:43:24
Torben Rothgeb
But anyway. It's achievement nonetheless. Oh, yeah. No, there's a lot of achievements. Yeah. Right. um Yeah, I mean, obviously in racing you have to have a good car, but, you know, i don't think anybody in any sport is one stuff on their own, other than the individual sports, of course. Right, right, right. You know, so...
