Speaker: Welcome to My American Hero. Here is Lexi Peach Pie Morris expressing gratitude for her mother.
Speaker: The library is going to change your life, my mother once said. I assumed she wanted me to read books, but she had a different idea.
Speaker: One Sunday afternoon, she took me to the San Luis Obispo Public Library because they offered free showers. We didn't have a place to live back then, and my mom wanted me to have a decent chance of making a good impression.
Speaker: An impression on who, I wondered. Was she going to turn me over to social services? Was she trying to get me accepted into boarding school? Thankfully, it was neither of those. She just wanted me to clean up a little so I could join the oldest profession in the world.
Speaker: Little did I know how much I'd love that job. I've made my life as a streetwalker, and I have my mother to thank for it. To my beautiful mother, you taught me so much, and you are my American hero.
