Zach Sheets: And yeah, this month we got a new Evil Dead movie, Evil Dead Burn, and we talked about Evil Dead 2 on the podcast. um So we're still kind in that demon demonic mode, I guess. So we're going to be watching the 1985 cult Italian classic, Demons.
Zach Sheets: which is directed by Liberto Bava and presented by Dario Argento. And this is like a um definite like an 80s cult classic. It's got like a crazy soundtrack with like Billy Idol and Motley Crue and stuff on it. And it's got um crazy, crazy special effects.
Zach Sheets: it's it's so it's It's always featured in like a lot of like horror specials. Shudder has been doing like a bunch of like specials about like horror movie moments, and it shows up on there. it's It's actually on Shudder right now. things are like the That's like the main official way to watch Demons, but it is all over the internet. It's on like pretty much every like free service as well. And also just YouTube. like it is just like there's like I think there's like a dozen versions. If you search for Demons on YouTube, there's like a million versions of there. just You can just like watch one of those.
Zach Sheets: which is where we're actually watching. We're watching a a version on youtube YouTube, but it's the, it's the, uh, any, any, any version of it, you could just find it. And then we are paused at the beginning, right before it says, Dario Argento Presenta.
Zach Sheets: And Chris,
Chris Prime: How's that not a cheese?
Zach Sheets: and Chris, you, you've never seen demons before, right?
Chris Prime: Never seen it. miss I mean, from the the the take of what it's sort of related to, it's like demon possessions.
Zach Sheets: you have any, do you have any idea about it at all or?
Chris Prime: But other than that, like it's definitely like on my Miss Dario Argento movies to watch. To get like his films. his films I don't think like I'm going to see how it ranks in the other like movies he's done like Suspiria and.
Zach Sheets: well well He just produced this. He did direct it.
Chris Prime: OK, OK, so OK, see, it's one of those like, is it him or he just sort of like slapped his name on it because he gave him money when that's something I would have made maybe and then like walked away.
Zach Sheets: yeah he He co-wrote it and produced it. but yeah It's Liberto Bava who directed... directed ah like Cannibal Holocaust and Blast Fighter and Monster Shark.
Chris Prime: Okay, so this was like, after this, this went downhill. Well, not downhill, but like a different path, because those movies are more cult, like horror, and not like blockbuster or like easy to put on TV movies.
Zach Sheets: Mm-hmm.
Chris Prime: At least that, I mean, we're in the day and age where like that that doesn't need be a thing anymore. Like you can make this movie now, and it's like a great like video on demand movie. so I'm hoping for that. I'm hoping that like it's just a lost movie that um for me, it's like, oh, i actually like seen it and I recommend it to other people.
Chris Prime: yeah The fact that it's like ah ah like on like so many cult lists that appears, I'm excited for that.

Zach Sheets: this is like This is like the 80s hip hop version of like Suspiria soundtrack.
Chris Prime: Yeah, i I like that um the horror music kind of was like, oh, it's 85. You know, like it it evolved with the time.
Chris Prime: So this is the gothic, I guess, hip hop. Because now it's like Cassavania music style now.
Chris Prime: Why is she freaking out now? From, like, the people on the train. She's like, oh my god.
Zach Sheets: I just noticed all punks.
Chris Prime: Like, how would she not freak out while in the tunnel?
Zach Sheets: What time of day is it that like this subway station is abandoned? It seems like it's like in the middle of the day.

Zach Sheets: like it was wasn't it later when it fell so this is it is still yeah peak like ah West Berlin is the cool part and East Berlin is like the communist like restricted part
Chris Prime: um so this is still peak, like,
Zach Sheets: So they're they're cool, like, Western western like rock music, West Berlin.

Chris Prime: I'm trying to piece together like where the error takes place in like this 80s version of Berlin that i didn't realize was super 80s compared to other errors. I'm like, man, ease Berlin was awesome.
Chris Prime: This is why I get why it's like error perfect everything. Every kind of cliche and lighting and

Chris Prime: And just the people. But then it's like, why she freaking out the punk scene? This is a like peak. You know, like it's get 89 was like, all right, well, you know, new Coke failed. So.

Chris Prime: So they combine all that space.
Zach Sheets: It's like a movie palace. Yeah.

Zach Sheets: Is the guy in the movie a demon or is he just like a ah turned into like ah a slasher?
Chris Prime: I don't know. Because... Is the mask turned that guy? Yeah, I don't... The demon just had claws, and...
Zach Sheets: Mm-hmm.
Chris Prime: Okay, is this also one of those, like, meta things where the movie's based on a real mask, and then, like, they didn't know that it will actually do this? So that they didn't, you know what Like, it's just not lore accurate from the movie to this.
Zach Sheets: It's like, oh, everyone who made the movie died mysteriously, but we have the mask from the movie.
Zach Sheets: See, where where's the blind guy? He's like all alone, like in like the balcony.
Chris Prime: I think he's on the atrium. Yeah, yeah, he's he's on the balcony level.

Chris Prime: With the premise, it's pretty simple and it's not like some complicated thing where the main hero we've been introduced to is like. Anything that's like prophesized. So far, you know, I don't want that to be like the twist where it's like, you know i have this magical book like what?
Zach Sheets: Who's this character in the movie?

Chris Prime: You know, for a free event, this is pretty good.
Chris Prime: So, one of my fears when I went to, like, big kind of, like, con, can like, you know, comic cons is when you do those free, like, activations or immersion experiences that's like, oh, this is not part of the show.

Chris Prime: I was waiting in line for the Dune experience, and it's like, okay, like you're going to be touched by a whole bunch of screaming witches, and was like, ah excuse me? Because you have to do that like trial to see if you're like one of the prophesized people.
Zach Sheets: hey Or it's like all those movies that are like, Oh, it's it's a haunted it's a haunted house, but there's a real killer in there.
Chris Prime: Yeah, it's like, wait, what?
Chris Prime: So like this, this is still Berlin. Like it's all like expressionism and like, you know, taking the art, elevating the art. It's like, for all we know, this was like part of the show.

Zach Sheets: um i spent millions of dollars just throwing his theater.
Zach Sheets: you feel Are they supposed to be like ah like from New York or something?
Chris Prime: Yeah, it's weird.

Chris Prime: this is what was like, I think this is like a cult movie because it's not like, ah it doesn't hold up as a movie... Like a fluid movie.
Zach Sheets: Man, they're in trouble if those two are like in charge now.
Chris Prime: Yeah, I know, like the 80s bros.

Chris Prime: But I get why this is like an Italian horror because they like this.

Zach Sheets: I mean, I guess they are outside the movie theater, so I'll be able to go in.

Chris Prime: Well, if you go and based on Evil Dead rules, it's maybe like...
Zach Sheets: but if you If you get scratched or injured by them, then you turn into demon. But then also people are getting stripped, killed by them, but they're coming back as demons.
Chris Prime: It's like...
Zach Sheets: So it's more like zombies, but then...
Chris Prime: Yeah. But maybe it's like also... Close. I was gonna say, it's like, if you're weak, like mentally, you get zombified.
Zach Sheets: and the original But the original one was ah scratched by an evil mask. And then the theater and in the theater is what's causing it all.
Chris Prime: Yeah, then it...

Chris Prime: Or they, like, unleashed the second wave by accident.
Zach Sheets: Yeah.
Chris Prime: But they didn't.
Chris Prime: Okay, so I think, like, eventually the humans will turn into the demons. But for whatever reason, their friend and Kathy, yeah, Kathy, like, changed dramatically.
Zach Sheets: Just one, yeah.
Chris Prime: Like, if anything, the first girl should already have that demon form.
Zach Sheets: Or was it because, did she get, like, too injured from, like, the grate of the air conditioner unit, like, slamming your into her back head or something? It's like, your body and this body's injured, i have like, burst out?
Chris Prime: It, like, forced her? Okay, he is literally just doing, like, a Dead Rising kind of mission over here.
Zach Sheets: yep
Chris Prime: I get how influential this is for some people. Like, if you so if you haven't seen this before, and you're like, wow, I want to recreate this in a game.
Zach Sheets: but I think Silent Hill has like, ah like ah the movie theater is called is called the Metropole.
Chris Prime: And it's very video game-like now.
Chris Prime: For a guy that had no samurai training, but he has, like, a ton of sword experience now.

Zach Sheets: look Well, I guess it's spread it spread because like the blanket got out and like and like killed those cops. none then So it's like a zombie movie now where it's like the city is infected.
Chris Prime: That makes sense.

Chris Prime: What- is he really gonna try to fly it?

Chris Prime: You know, I did not predict the air, like, helicopter weapon.
Zach Sheets: It didn't seem like it was going fast enough to like do like that much damage, though.
Chris Prime: Wait, what is... but Why do they have a harpoon gun?
Zach Sheets: like how George is going to become like a like a full-on like ease action hero now.
Chris Prime: He's not even like, oh, a soldier, you know, or anything. it just, okay, I'm very confident at putting all these problem skills together.
Zach Sheets: Where's this for the entire movie?
Chris Prime: Because he seemed scared from, like, when the pimp told him to, like, throw the body, and now it's like...
Zach Sheets: Yeah.
Chris Prime: He just assembled a grappling hook.

Chris Prime: He knows how to tie the equipment. What what is happening? Like, this seems like the movie in the movie.

Chris Prime: It's cool, don't get me wrong. I just, like, can't escape the reality now.

Chris Prime: Like, was this just like a worker that got turned two?
Chris Prime: dude. This is a very complicated kill they're trying to pull off here.

Zach Sheets: so So that metal wasn't very like thick or anything.

Zach Sheets: it was like it was like aluminum foil.
Chris Prime: like he had other exposed skin, right? You didn't have to go for like the eye hole?

Zach Sheets: Are you afraid of rock?
Zach Sheets: You would make more sense for this movie with all rock music in it? If it was like a concert and not of like a movie?
Chris Prime: That would make sense. that I like that idea way more. And the band is called Nostradamus or something if they want to keep that theme going.
Zach Sheets: Yeah.
Chris Prime: But don't think Nostradamus predicted this.
Zach Sheets: Oh, they actually get like one of these bands? Like they get like Molly Crew to show up as themselves?
Chris Prime: you see, that that makes sense in that era when you have the band in it and they need to work it in.
Zach Sheets: Mm-hmm.
Chris Prime: This just seems like sort of vague music clips. Like, you know, they they try to make a music video. So it's like a rock opera, but not quite.
Chris Prime: feel like they should turn this into a rock opera. Just like the scenes and the the the music kind of match better and get rid of the coke head parts. Because the coke didn't really matter. Like it didn't add to the thing. I got a sneaking suspicion. I know how this movie is going to end.
Chris Prime: Okay, I know we mentioned this is how like the Berlin Wall fell in 89, but are you sure it was not this?
Zach Sheets: Yeah. Yeah. Demons cost it.
Chris Prime: In 85? This
Chris Prime: is when the West Berlin was the uncool demonic Berlin, so East Berlin was better. They built that wall for a reason.
Zach Sheets: Sylvia, you knew, was like, bet you're glad about that. We have that wall now.
Chris Prime: ah We're here to take ya out of the movie! George is like more and more movie star, like movie action guy now.
Chris Prime: He's like the normal guy. I wasn't a demon! Ah!
Zach Sheets: I like like the last five minutes where it's just these like these awesome new characters.

Chris Prime: But what about my old life? Oh my god.
Chris Prime: thought I thought it would end on a more of a downer.

Zach Sheets: Well, there's there's a sequel, but as I don't think has anything to do with this movie.

Chris Prime: thought George was going to turn.
Zach Sheets: Oh yeah. So the sequel is, it does, it does kind of continue think where it's like, it's the, it's like years after like this outbreak is ah of demons and it's like Humane is coming back, but then like a horror movie on a TV is broadcast and that causes like demons to come back.
Chris Prime: Oh, like a horror movie based on the events of this or just.
Chris Prime: You know, i mean, like, is it. A deeper meaning.
Zach Sheets: Yeah, think I think it's like... They've walled up they've like walllo they sealed off like the area where demons were, but then these like teenagers go into like the area and ah get like infected, and then start moving back to like the safe area.
Chris Prime: ah That sounds like 28 days later.
Zach Sheets: and pretty i Pretty much. Yeah.
Chris Prime: 28 weeks later. It's like a direct reference. But I feel like they did this first, right?
Zach Sheets: yeah
Zach Sheets: And The Church is like the like unofficial like third movie.
Chris Prime: But yeah, I didn't mind this. This was,
Chris Prime: again, just say interesting yeah like an interesting Dead formula.
Zach Sheets: killing killer.
Chris Prime: like take on an evil dead formula
Chris Prime: But they're like, it's not it's not zombies. The demons should be more zombie-like, but then it's like they keep introducing new rules of like what happens.
Zach Sheets: I feel like they definitely saw Evil Dead and were like, oh, let's do that. Because that was like a very Italian thing of like, we we see an American movie and we're going to make our own version of it. Like,
Chris Prime: Yeah, yeah. And I get it.
Zach Sheets: all all all All the Italian Rambo knockoffs and like, like, Lumberto Bava did like Monster Shark, which i think was the Jaws ripoff.
Zach Sheets: So yeah, so they're like, oh yeah, let's let's do our own like, uh, Evil Dead with rock and roll.
Zach Sheets: Yeah, it's it's fun. like i like It's got lots lots of like crazy kills and ah special effects and then just the soundtrack element of it.
Chris Prime: Yeah, i like the music, but I mean, regardless of the movie, the music was good. It's just when it blends together, it just sometimes makes sense. um I mean, for me, it's just like the the bits that have nothing to do with the like moment. They're just like filler scenes and you feel them.
Chris Prime: Especially when like again, the coke heads. Why? It's to put more music so it's like, okay, we i give them things to do.
Zach Sheets: Yeah.
Zach Sheets: why Why was there such build-up to them just have them me like get like immediately get like killed by demons?
Chris Prime: I think also it was a show that like outside of the theater, it's still like the real world going on.
Chris Prime: You know, it's like, oh, it's it's it hasn't spread here yet. But...
Zach Sheets: yeah yeah you like The only important element of their like storyline is like like the blind guy escaped when they got in, so then the like the infection got spread out to the city.
Chris Prime: But you see, it's effective enough to just show me that. If anything, the girl should have seen more of the city before going straight to the movie theater. You know, like that that would have done the same job.
Zach Sheets: Mm-hmm.
Chris Prime: of showing that the berlin West Berlin area is completely like normal, but when you get to the movie theater and it spreads out of control, you know then it's like, okay, hey, this is a this is crazy.
Chris Prime: But, yeah, like it just kind of jumps right into that, and
Chris Prime: I'm like... I take it out of following the characters because of now we follow like other characters that had nothing to do with anybody for a while.
Zach Sheets: e
Chris Prime: And we never got like of the robot face guy. i think it's to assume that he was a worker because.
Zach Sheets: i yeah or like he like the theater like he's like the servant to the theater because like the blind guy said the theater is like the cause or everything the theater is evil yeah
Chris Prime: Why does the blind guy know that?
Chris Prime: blonde guy should have said something where it's like I've been trying to hunt down the mass for something like it you know okay see that's all like it has to do something
Zach Sheets: Oh, the guy in the mask was the like the the main character in the movie, too.
Zach Sheets: Yeah, it was like was like a like... It wasn't a movie, it was like an actual like it was actual footage.
Chris Prime: like they did it for them yeah like he filmed it like he edited it together
Zach Sheets: He was like... He was like... He was shooting... They were shooting a film, and then he got every like he yet turned into like a demonic... like get possessed by that mask or whatever and then then to the theater like the theater's like go film a movie go film a fake movie and kill all your cast members
Chris Prime: No idea. But I am confused too. But okay. If anything, it should be that there's a guy that was documenting the mask. Something happened. He came back, wanted to show his docu-documentary to like the people and be like, hey, check this out.
Chris Prime: My doc, you know, this great art piece and stuff.
Zach Sheets: I think
Chris Prime: It's like, I want to show you how crazy it is. And with like ED's flair. And then during the thing, it's like, you know, they've been kind of hinting at like, hey, people go touch the mask, put it on. And then that's what happens. Right.
Chris Prime: ah Because like the girl, the the like lady who puts it on first and cuts herself, it seems like the worker knew because she looked at and goes like on like, all right, like everything everything's on cue.
Zach Sheets: yeah She seemed like she was in on everything. like She was like so like mysterious and kind of like like had an evil vibe to her and then she just got like the killed like toward the end.
Chris Prime: Yeah, so that's where I'm like, oh, i don't think she knew to the full extent what was going to happen.
Chris Prime: But yeah, that's why I'm like, I don't get how her plan, how she fell into the plan.
Zach Sheets: I think it's kind of a thing of like a lot of Italian movies. is this like it's more It's more about the vibes.
Chris Prime: Yeah, I could see that. I could definitely see that now.
Zach Sheets: It's like, what what kind of crazy special effects can we come up with? And then like cool lighting and like cool music.
Zach Sheets: And then the plot is kind of like secondary.
Zach Sheets: but guess I guess this was originally supposed to be like a part of like an anthology movie, but then Lamberto Bada was like, i like this is I like this more than like the other two stories we're coming up with. So like, we're just make this into a full movie.
Chris Prime: I mean, it also feels like two different movies came together.
Chris Prime: Right? It's just like, you could do the cokehead plot for something and then tie it into, ah like, you know, they stumble upon the connection, but it's like a stretch. It's stretch that, like, it crosses over.
Chris Prime: I don't know. I get why it's influential. I don't know where on that list that you saw this that it was, uh, like, I guess high up there, but...
Zach Sheets: It was 53 on Bravo's 100 Scariest Movie Moments countdown.
Chris Prime: I can see that. I can see, like, it's in the middle.
Chris Prime: Definitely, like, it plays it safe at certain parts, and then otherwise it takes really big dares and leaps. Um... But it it's not like you're bored, you know, you're just like, why is this happening? OK, payoff. OK, what's this now? OK, payoff.
Chris Prime: But then it's like crazy one offs that really stick out, you know, like. What's up with Mr. Roboto or. or Or um how did like, you know, what's her face's friend turn into like King Demon?
Zach Sheets: Yeah, why why why did only one like actual demon burst out somebody?
Zach Sheets: Because everyone else seems like they're zombies, but then it's like, oh no, there actually is like a demon in them that burst like bursts out of them at any time.
Zach Sheets: Yeah, it was it was fun, fun eighty ridiculous 80s Italian horror.
Chris Prime: Yeah. if you're't really If you're not really caring for plot, it's got great vibes, great 80s aesthetics. ah It definitely wears the Evil Dead kind of motifs, like, you know, inspiration on its sleeve pretty well.
Chris Prime: Don't mind that you don't really have to know a lot about these characters. It's just sort of like they're here. That's it.
Zach Sheets: all all Literally all of them are going to die at some point. So it doesn't really matter.
Chris Prime: The pimp character, surprisingly, was our favorite because he was like the most competent.
Zach Sheets: Yeah. RIP Tony.
