Introduction and Fulham's Unbeaten Run

00:00:01
Speaker
Every club. Every day. The Global Sports Podcast Network. work Hello and welcome to the Daily Fulham Podcast. It's 2025 and we remain your home of all things Fulham. Today is Friday and as we enter January the days are slowly becoming a bit more familiar. It's a Sunday 2pm kick off for the next one as Fulham look to extend their unbeaten run of games from December and take that into the new year.

Reflecting on Fulham's 2024 Success

00:00:29
Speaker
My name is Gavin Ruffle and I'm here with your forecast Friday as we look ahead to the Cottages second encounter with the tractor boys this season.
00:00:36
Speaker
But before I do that, I just want to take a quick look back at 2024 as a whole for Fulham, which was a very successful year, one which saw them finish eighth overall, putting them ahead of the likes of Tottenham and Manchester United, which illustrates how well teams like Fulham and Bournemouth as well, Bournemouth who finished seventh in their table for 2024,
00:00:57
Speaker
just how well those teams are doing now establishing themselves as Premier League regulars and the monopoly of the big six is now over and it's going to ask questions of those clubs so they can get back to where their fans believe they should be and where they feel they should belong.
00:01:15
Speaker
What are the highlights from 2024? Well, I think first of all, if we go back to last season, the major highlight from that was getting to the semifinal of the Carabao Cup. It's a competition they haven't enjoyed much success in over the years. Generally, they put out a weakened side as we saw this season, but they managed to get themselves to a two-legged semifinal there against Liverpool.
00:01:38
Speaker
and on another day if things had gone their way they could have got to the final because there wasn't too much between the two sides and over those two legs but they'll look back at that with a bit of pride managing to get to the semi-finals there and aside from that if we look at the league some of the highlights there well I think their form in London Derby is how they've managed to get themselves up for those games, especially when you're playing a lot of big sides in those London Darby's and the two stand out wins this season would have to be the two West London Darby's, Brentford and Chelsea, how they managed to come from behind in both of those games and secure ah late, late winners, particularly in the Chelsea one. That was a a real monkey off the bat and it's been 45 years since they last won at Stanford Bridge and the scenes, the jubilation we saw from the traveling away fans and also
00:02:26
Speaker
the players running on the pitch as well to celebrate that goal, that effort that finally it had happened that they ah had managed that win at Stamford Bridge.

Fulham's Inconsistency Challenges

00:02:35
Speaker
We reach this time of year and we talk about New Year's resolutions. Some people do them some people don't I'm not a big fan of New Year's resolutions because I think if you're going to make a change why does it have to be done at the start of the year why does it have to be done in January if you want to make a change you can make a change at any time and the problem with New Year's resolutions are that people give up on them after
00:02:58
Speaker
a couple of weeks. I know I have in the past. That's why I don't bother doing them. I don't set myself those targets anymore. But everyone's different. If you've got New Year's resolutions and you want to stick to them and you feel you can stick to them, then absolutely go for it. Good luck to you, whatever that may be. But if we apply a New Year's resolution to this Fulham side, this Fulham team, what they can possibly look to do better, to strive to get better results than what they have in the past. And I think we all feel that they are doing well.
00:03:26
Speaker
in the top half of the table. They are in eighth place currently which was the place they occupied for the whole of 2024. but There is a but. You always look at it as a football farm. You look back at several games where you've dropped points where you feel you probably shouldn't have. You look at things with rose tinted glasses, don't you? Because you never look at it the other way around necessarily where you're looking at games where you probably got points where you weren't expected to or in a game where you where you weren't the better side. And one of those things that Fulham can certainly improve upon, which has been mentioned, has been pointed out a number of times on this podcast,
00:04:03
Speaker
is how they need to be better from winning positions. The statistics will tell you that they've dropped more points from winning positions than any other team in the Premier League And despite the fact that they are on 29 points after 19 games, you look at it and you think that they probably should have quite a few more points than that. ah Look, nobody expects a team like Fulham to be 100% in games when they do score the first goal. But the fact that they are under 50% win ratio when they do score that first goal illustrates the problems they have. And I'm just going to go into that in a bit greater detail.
00:04:38
Speaker
They've scored the first goal in 13 of 19 games this season, which is more than Liverpool, it's more than Arsenal, who were the top two at the moment, those two teams fighting out for the league title you would think at the minute. And the other team that are doing well, having a very successful season, are not on Forest. They're the only team that have scored the first goal on more occasions than Fulham. They've scored the first goal 15 times. But the reason those teams are where they are, and the reason Fulham are where they are, is because Fulham struggle to hold on to that position of superiority.
00:05:06
Speaker
If we look at the statistics again, Liverpool, from the 12 times they've scored the first goal, they are 100%, they've won every single game, which is why they're top of the league. Arsenal, when they've scored the first goal, they've mustered 9 wins and 3 draws. Tottenham Forest, the team who were playing above everyone's expectations, flying high, 15 times they've scored the opening goal and that's resulted in 10 wins, 4 draws and 1 defeat. You compare that to Fulham, who as I mentioned have scored the first goal in more games than Liverpool of Arsenal, that's only resulted in 5 wins, 5 draws and 3 defeats, which represents a win percentage of 38%. And why haven't they been able to secure the 3 points from those winning positions?
00:05:48
Speaker
Well, if you look at it, how many times have they scored the next goal after going in front? And that would only be two occasions, which is the Newcastle game at home and the Crystal Palace game away from home. So twice out of the 13 times they've scored the first goal, have they then gone on to score the second goal, which is just 15% of the time, which is a very low number.
00:06:09
Speaker
And why is that? Is it a mindset thing? Do they switch off? Do they allow teams to come onto them after making bright starts in games? Another statistic I want to draw everyone's attention to is the fact that Fulham seems to often concede a lot of goals after half-time. We all like Marco Silva. We all rate Marco Silva as a manager. But whatever he says at his half-time team talk, it does not seem to be having the desired effect, does it?
00:06:35
Speaker
and obviously in a lot of those games full of them are going into the half time break 1-0 in front so the onus is on the opposing manager then to get his message across to his players and that's seeming to be an easier job for them to do than it is for Marco Silva to do because what does he say then at 1-0 when they're dominating the game just keep doing what you're doing maybe that's not the right message because then it brings in complacency and people don't have that same drive that same that same level of commitment maybe and I want to break down minutes 46 to 60, which is a problem area for Fulham. So again, New Year's resolution is stop conceding goals between 46 and the 60th minute, because they conceded nine goals in that period of time, and that's the joint worst along with Leicester. But it's not only conceding goals, they don't score goals in that period of time as well. They've scored one goal between the 46 and the 60th minute, which is the worst of any team in the league.
00:07:28
Speaker
So as I said a lot of the time they do go into half time with that goal advantage but they maybe seem less intent to go and extend that lead to give them that breathing space to give them that comfort to go on and win the game maybe it's just a psychological thing they switch off and they sit back and invite teams on we saw this on the weekend against Bournemouth when they were 1-0 in front and Bournemouth had two or three opportunities to score within the space of the first two minutes after the restart they eventually got their goal on the 51st minute and it's a recurring issue and it's just something maybe the players are aware of it and that's why it keeps happening it's that psychological thing until you break down these barriers and actually manage to overcome it then it's just going to keep happening isn't it?
00:08:11
Speaker
On the flip side, one positive is, is when they have fallen behind in games, which obviously hasn't been too many times as the stats bear out, they've actually shown great resilience and an ability to bounce back, that bounce back ability. As was mentioned with the local Derby wins against Chelsea and against Brentford, managing to overcome a goal deficit and win those games late on. Game against Spurs as well, where they were a goal down and came back to get a draw.
00:08:37
Speaker
Ipswich if you can remember that far back early in the season they conceded the first goal there. The only time they conceded the first goal this season and not got on to get a result is the Manchester United game which is one of the rare times where they failed to score with the other one being the Southampton game recently as well.
00:08:53
Speaker
So there are just a few areas that Fulham need to improve because they are having a good season. We can all acknowledge that. They've only lost four games, which is less than the current champions. But there's always areas you can look to improve and get better. And if Fulham are to better what they did in 2024 with a better points hole, then these are the areas they should target and try to get better at, which ultimately gives them the three points in games because they've not been beat recently.
00:09:20
Speaker
but they're probably not getting as many wins as they would like.

Transfer Window and Player Updates

00:09:24
Speaker
Switching topics now, it is January, which means one thing. Well, it means a lot of things, but one of the things that it does mean is that the January transfer window is now open. So fans,
00:09:36
Speaker
have their fantasies of what's going to happen, who they want to come in, who they feel maybe should go. I actually don't think this is going to be that busy a month for Fulham. We know Tony Khan likes to do his business later on so if there are any deals you're probably going to have to wait till the last day or two. Certainly not going to get anything done in the first couple of weeks of the window but I don't think it is a massive need to change things. They brought in a few players in the summer and the signings they made in the sample were pretty positive and I don't expect to see wholesale changes. You might see one or two outgoings, someone like Carlos Inicius who's really on the periphery. He got a little 5-10 minute run out against Southampton, didn't he? But you don't expect to see too much more of him unless there is a serious injury to one of their other two strikers.
00:10:23
Speaker
A name that's been mentioned a lot when we talk about possible outgoings and links to other clubs is is Andreas Pereira and maybe there'll be speculation there but I don't think Marco Silva will look to sell him on the cheap. If they're going to move Andreas Pereira on then it's going to require a club putting in a substantial bid for Marco Silva to entertain vaults of moving him on. So as far as incoming, Evan Ferguson is one name that has been linked with question marks over Fulham's strikers. Could that happen a alone? deal I don't think Brighton will want to sell him or if they do sell him it's going to be again like Andreas Perot they're going to want a lot of money for him.
00:11:02
Speaker
I wouldn't say he's lost his way but you go through these peaks and troughs don't you so I think he's a really good player and I think he would be an asset for Fulham so that's one possibly to keep an eye on. I know there's been talk maybe people saying should Fulham look at getting another winger in that's not an area I feel they desperately need to go into the market for.
00:11:23
Speaker
It's only exacerbated by the fact that Reece Nelson's got a long-term injury but hopefully he'll be back in in about a month's time so is there any point in bringing in a winger at the end of the month if Reece Nelson's going to be fit around that time as well because you've got Nelson, you've got Adama Troiore, you've got Harry Wilson, you've got a Wobi, you are even Ryan Cessignon who's not seeing much football at the minute so I think Fulham are okay in that department. If we do see some business I can only see it maybe being outgoing, so there may be one incoming. I don't think Fulham will be busy. But you never know, if the right deal, the right player comes along, then we may be in for a surprise and they do do some business. But I feel like if they do bring anyone in, they'll have to get rid first.
00:12:06
Speaker
And just one final thing to note before we do look ahead to this game and talk a bit about Ipswich, just want to shout out Anthony Robinson who's been nominated for the Player of the Month and he's been brilliant, has't he's been a pillar of consistency, shown improvement from seasons gone by. He's got more assists than any other defender in the league this season and he's done his defensive duties very well in difficult circumstances, in difficult games recently when he's had to come up against the likes of Saka and Salah.
00:12:34
Speaker
he's more than held his own so hopefully for Fulham in the second half of the season he can keep up those levels of performances because just speaking there about January transfer window if there is one position Fulham maybe could look at is it's a backup to Anthony Robinson but it's a hard one to sell that isn't it bringing the player in and they're willing to be back up because Anthony Robinson plays every game for Fulham and they don't have that like for like replacement so touch woody can stay fit and you can keep up the consistent levels in the second half of the season.

Ipswich's Premier League Journey

Speaker
Ipswich then, that was a massive win for them, wasn't it? The other day against Chelsea, not only to secure the three points, so they're now within touch of walls, a point behind them and a couple points behind Everton as well. And that's with those teams seeming to have done well recently, Everton having some good points, not maybe winning games, but getting good draws against the likes of Arsenal, Manchester City and Chelsea.
00:14:02
Speaker
walllves are on a decent little run with that new manager boost So it's important for Ipswich to get that win and it took them a long time den it to get that first win which they managed to secure at Spurs but this was their first win at Portman Road and it's probably surprising a lot of people that has taken so long because They've been used to winning a lot of games at Portman Road in the last two seasons, and it's easy to forget what progress they have made in such a short space of time. Let's not forget, this this time two years ago, they were in League One. So for them to catapult themselves up from League One to the Premier League in the space of a couple of seasons, there's nothing short of remarkable. and
00:14:38
Speaker
It's different for their fans this season, isn't it? They've gone into games expected to win most weeks, certainly at home anyway, with with their home form being so formidable. Now they go into games, they go to Portman Road and they're the underdog for 90% of those games. It's a different dynamic and with the different expectations, you've just got to stay patient, haven't you? Realize that you are playing against better quality teams, better quality players.
00:15:01
Speaker
and just have the faith, trust the process, that you you can get things right at the end of the day and at the end of the season. What was interesting listening to when I was doing the crossover with the Daily Ips, which was the talk of Kieran McKenna being adaptable, maybe having to change his philosophies against some of the better teams with the better players, the likes of Arsenal and Chelsea, where they've opted for that more defensive structure and solidity focus and emphasis on that side of things more so than the attacking element of the game. And I feel like you need to do that. You need to be able to mix up your game in the league
00:15:37
Speaker
And you need to be able to adapt to whoever the opposition is, which is maybe you can pay that to a manager like Russell Martin, who wasn't willing to show that flexibility and being able to adapt his team who just felt that he could play the same brand of football that his Southampton side played in the championship.
00:15:54
Speaker
Well, it's not going to work, is it? So credit to Kieran McKenna there and whatever happens to Ipswich this season, I hope that Kieran McKenna does stay there. It was talk of him, wasn't it, before the season started that with vacancies at Chelsea after Pochettino left. There was links with him there and with Tenhar always seeming to be under pressure. There was talk of him being the next Manchester United manager.
00:16:16
Speaker
which seems a poison chalice for anyone so thankfully for him he he didn't take that step so um yeah credit to him that he wanted to establish himself as a manager and with Ipswich it's obviously a tough task because you're going into a league now whereas I said you know you're going to be up against it and you're not going to have so much of the ball you're not going to have so many chances on goal it's a different mentality it's a different mindset and the players have all got to buy into that, got to buy into his approach, his system, the way he the way he'll make subtle changes across the season. So I feel like they have got a good one there in Kiwi McKenna. and
00:16:52
Speaker
Ipswich have got a fighting chance for me, no doubt, and it's a massive win, probably one that was unexpected, maybe given some of the other fixtures they've had, especially at home, they would have fancied winning those, but for them to get a win against Chelsea, maybe it was the right time to play them as well, because Chelsea just having a little bit of a tough time at the moment, lost to Fulham, of course, on Boxing Day. Yeah, massive, any team in the fight for relegation can get three points at this stage, it almost feels, it feels double because they are so out so hard to come by, but I predicted at the start of the season that they would be fine. I thought their home form would be a little bit better. I thought they would get wins at home and that hasn't necessarily been the case. But they've got a fighting chance and yeah absolutely wouldn't surprise me if they do stay up. If you look back to the game and early on in the season.
00:17:39
Speaker
at the end of August. I look back at it now, look at the first 19 games from a full-on perspective, that was certainly one of the harder games because you came away from that feeling like a point was actually a good result. I mean, so it's how you look at things, isn't it? Because a lot lot of fans will say, oh, you're playing the newly promoted side there, you expect to get three points. But on the balance of the game, it's which were more than worthy of getting the point there. And one play that particularly impressed me was Liam Dalat. I thought he was a real problem for Isid Yop and Calvin Bassi. He calls them a lot of problems bully them almost and he scored a lot of goals in the early part of the season and maybe the goals are dried up recently big for him to get that goal against Chelsea just to give him a confidence boost albeit a penalty but a goal is a goal nevertheless and is the onus a bit too much on him it's which just scored the 18 goals a season
00:18:22
Speaker
and he scored seven of them so maybe in the transfer window they might need to address that and look at areas where they can get more goals maybe just to take the pressure off him a little bit so they got someone else they can look to that can bag them a few goals. You're looking at potentially someone there in Liam Delapte to score double figures goals for ah for one of the newly promoted teams near the bottom end. I would say for then their sake ah the way I look at it, they're probably going to need a bit of help in that department. But it's not easy to find goal scorers when your team's near the bottom end of the table. It's not always easy to find that right player in January, is it? But I think that's something they can certainly look to address. And one of the names I've seen linked with them is Jaden Filigy. I've just seen that linked Pop-up and Jane Philagene's a player i've I've seen a lot of so maybe wide options as well is something they can possibly look to do in terms of business because maybe Jack Clark but I like Jack Clark from what I've seen of him at Sunderland But maybe he hasn't quite made that breakthrough in the Premier League still a young player Maybe the expectation can be too high at times and it just takes a little bit of time for these these players to find their feet in the Premier League Sammy Smodak's as well I think he started he started the season okay, but maybe
00:19:36
Speaker
The goals haven't necessarily been flowing for them hasn't always been in the team So yeah, I mean if you're if you're a team near the bottom end of the table Goal scorer can be the the absolute difference between staying up and going down if you look at walls at the minute things look okay because they got Mateusz Kunier who's who's in double figures goals and they got Strand Larsen so they got a couple of guys there that are banging the goals in and which is great to have. For for teams like Everton, even Crystal Palace, who are still hovering in and around. It chris had a good little run recently, but I think they maybe haven't had that goal scorer. Mateta's not banged in the goals that he was doing the second half of last season. And I think the important thing for Ipswich is just to keep other teams involved. The more teams that you can involve in a relegation fight, relegation scrap, then the better chance you'll have. So they need to keep in touch with the likes of Everton and Crystal Palace.
00:20:26
Speaker
just so they don't feel too comfortable themselves. And in the final part of this episode, just gonna have a little preview what changes might be in store and how the game might go. But before I do that, let me tell you all about GSPN.

Tactical Preview: Fulham vs Ipswich

00:21:14
Speaker
Well there's a lot of expectation, people will predict for them to win this game because they're playing the team at home near the bottom end of the table but we've seen them stumble in these games quite recently haven't we? The games where they played the bigger sides where there isn't such an expectation on them to win the game they've been absolutely fine but if you're an Ipswich fan listen to this and you want some hope then I'll give you that hope and that's the fact that in the last two games against teams in similar positions two Ipswich at home resulted in a fall and defeat to Wolves and this was when they still had Gary O'Neill as manager and the 0-0 against Savantan which was particularly disappointing because Savantan had struggled to pick up points all season and
00:21:55
Speaker
Fulham just weren't at the races in that game. They struggled to create chances themselves as much as Southampton didn't lay a glove on them, didn't test them out at all. Fulham will look at themselves and be kicking themselves that they were only able to maybe create one or two clear cut chances in the game, if that. So, if Ipswich do come with the same mindset and the approach that they did in their last the away game,
00:22:16
Speaker
against Arsenal where the focus and emphasis was on their defence and being solid tough to break down then it's up to Fulham to be able to unlock that have the players to breach that defence and look Ipswich might open up a bit more than they did in the game against Arsenal they might come away to Craven Cottage thinking this is an opportunity for them to get three points they do play before walls so if they do get three points in this game then it will go ahead of them which just at this stage give you a little bit of a psychological boost and an advantage you take anyone you can get but from full they need to be able to show that can break teams down if they come into a game with that low block when their focus is on putting men behind the ball and with that being said I would like to see a Mio Smith role come in for this game he's back on the bench for the game against Bournemouth I haven't missed the previous two and he is that player that can just produce that moment of magic
00:23:09
Speaker
that can open up other teams when the game is tight, when it is a bit of a scrap, there's not much going on. We probably haven't seen that as much as we would like. And I think maybe in the games against those bigger teams, someone like Pereira is more suited to that. But I would like to see Smithrow come in for Pereira for this game. Pereira, despite the assist for the corner, which is great because we don't see Fulham score goals from corners. It was a bit of a tough afternoon for him.
00:23:40
Speaker
and I think Sanderberg is probably going to still be out for this game so I would like to see Fulham go with that positive option of ah playing the Tom Caine alongside a Sassa Lukic and Emil Smith row as that cam rather than the dual 8s that they liked in the early part of the season which was Andreas Pereira and Emil Smith row that's the way I go about things and we've seen this back five in the last couple of games which he brought into it at Stamford Bridge. I don't know if that was a deliberate tactic that he would always had in mind for that game or was it just because of personnel with Jockemanderson coming back from injury.
00:24:23
Speaker
The want is to get him into the team. For him to do that, the back five was the best solution with him not wanting to drop Isidio because of the steady nature of his performances. and Obviously, Isidio made a big, big mistake, a critical mistake that led to Bournemouth's equaliser later on in the game, which he'll be disappointed about. But Joachim Anderson didn't have a particularly comfortable afternoon. and ah He has played that position. it's It's not like that's a completely unknown position. He has played at a Crystal Palace, so but it's just he seems a little bit rusty, so I would like to see Fulham go back to a four-man defence for a game at home to Ipswich, play the three in midfield. If you look at Cairny, you don't see Cairny starting too many games. He started the one against Southampton, struggled to make an impact and make much of an impression ah in that game, but he came off the bench and I thought he did pretty well against Ballers, so I'd like to see him from the start here.
00:25:15
Speaker
And Emil Smithrow, I'd like to see him get back in the team. Damatroyori, it's funny you look back on the early game of the season, Damatroyori had a really good game against Ips, which I felt anyway, having scored the equaliser. And that was ah that was during a time where he was playing his his best football at Fullerman, having not seen too much of him last season, which just shows how things change quickly, don't don't they? And at that stage, Harry Wilson wasn't playing too much, wasn't getting many minutes off the bench now. It's roles reversed, whereas Harry Wilson, he is getting more minutes.
00:25:45
Speaker
I'm sure he'd be delighted to get that goal from the start against Bournemouth and Adama Traur is very much playing second fiddle to him, that albeit he did start the game against Chelsea and he looked okay he looked okay to be fair but he's still got a big part to play and if he does come off the bench or whoever comes off the bench, then the substitutes have been known to make a difference for Fulham. So, as far as the score prediction, look, I think Fulham will win the game, but I was really confident that they were beats of Hampton at home. I just want to see them play with that same urgency that we see when they're playing against some of the
00:26:20
Speaker
the better teams in the league the some of the top six teams which you don't necessarily see against these thingses of be two o'clock kick off on a sunday so the atmosphere might be subdued some but it's up to the players to lift the crowd and give them something to shout about
00:26:40
