Final Episode Announcement

00:00:01
Speaker
Every club. Every day. The Global Sports Podcast Network. work Hello and welcome back to the Daily Fulham Podcast brought to you by the Global Sports Podcast Network.
00:00:14
Speaker
My name is Gavin Ruffall and the season might be done but we're not quite done here, not just yet. However, this is going to be the final episode for the foreseeable future. I know I know, sad times, but I am really glad and appreciative that you can all join me for

Season Reflection and Awards

00:00:29
Speaker
it.
00:00:29
Speaker
So in this final episode, I'm just going to be dotting some I's and crossing some T's as the dust settles on the 2024-25 campaign. I will be throwing things forward, looking at what happens next, what we may or may not be likely to see in the summer.
00:00:44
Speaker
But before then, I will be reflecting on the season that's just gone. And given my overall assessments, I will also be giving out my own awards, courtesy of the Daily Fulham podcast.
00:00:55
Speaker
So stay tuned for that because I'm sure it will provoke debate. So first things first, following that final day defeat to Manchester City, coupled with Bournemouth's victory over Lesley, Fulham did drop out of the top half, finishing 11th with their record points tally in the Premier League of 54 points.
00:01:13
Speaker
And I know it will come as a disappointment to some seeing them drop out of that top half. And whilst the form has been a bit underwhelming in the last two or three months, The season has still been an undoubted success, at least in my mind.
00:01:27
Speaker
There's not been any stage that Fulham have been in danger of being in a relegation scrap. and I accept that somewhat because of how far adrift those those three sides at the bottom have been. But it's also a testament to the work that Marco Silva continues to do.
00:01:40
Speaker
Three seasons of stability, mid-table finishes, and that does constitute success. I know people will always want more. There was a chance of Europe. until quite recently but achieving European football shouldn't be the barometer the divider for what constitutes success and failure the truth is if you rewind back to the start of August and tell Fulham fans that they're going to see their side achieve a record rally and finish ahead of Manchester United and Spurs and even West Ham given the talk in pre-season about where they could finish so to finish ahead of those sides I don't see how you're going to turn that down
00:02:16
Speaker
Maybe Fulham fans will think they've missed an opportunity, missed a trick when they see those sides struggling and combine that with what Nottingham Forest have been able to achieve. Maybe there is that feeling of what could have been, but I do feel you need to balance that out with more of a sense of realism.
00:02:32
Speaker
ah But look, there's been some great moments this season. Let's not lose sight of that. i I'm thinking of success in those derby games, victories against some of the teams near the top and also winning at places where they haven't been used to winning.
00:02:45
Speaker
I also think that they've done that in a style and with a swagger at times. They've shown on a number of occasions that they can go up against those better sides and mix it, compete but with a purpose and by taking the game to the opposition, not simply sitting back and waiting to have your tummy tickled.
00:03:01
Speaker
They've shown that they can offer a threat wherever they go and I think that's illustrated by some of the away performances and the fact that since the opening day after that defeat Old Trafford they've only failed to score twice on the road.
00:03:14
Speaker
They've also broken a Premier League record for the most goals scored by substitutes in any season. So that tells you a little bit about the squad and the character within the squad. I mean, if players are left out of the starting line, there's no sulking.
00:03:28
Speaker
They know they still have a role to play if they are called upon. So you've got to give the manager credit for that, for making substitutions that can make that telling impact. And it also highlights the importance of having a squad because there have been and number of games where Fulham have come from behind to win or salvage a point. And without that quality to come off the bench, you don't see those turnarounds.
00:03:50
Speaker
However, I do also acknowledge that there are other areas where Fulham can improve, and one of those is certainly being more efficient, more effective when they do score first, or when they do go into the lead in games.
00:04:02
Speaker
It's something i feel Nottingham Forest have done pretty well when they have scored the first goal. They've done a really good job in converting those winning positions into three points, hence the high finish, hence the fact that they were in the running for Champions League football right until the final whistle.
00:04:18
Speaker
For Fulham, 28 points dropped from winning positions. It's far too many, isn't it? Only Spurs have dropped more points when taking the lead. So it's hard not to look at that and think what could have been. And I know you're not going to be perfect, but just think if they've been a little bit better, slightly better at closing out games, what could have possibly been?
00:04:37
Speaker
ah Particularly early on in the season and they seemed to go through a stage where they were culpable of it every week. I seem to recall them playing West Ham and Everton. Not sure if it was back to back but it was certainly in close succession and in both of those matches they weren't able to convert dominance and succumb to stoppage time equalisers.
00:04:56
Speaker
I definitely feel that many games have followed a similar pattern where Fulham look in control but then can't quite assert their dominance by getting that extra goal, which has ultimately proved costly. So I feel going into next season, that's something you want to see them be better at, being ruthless in games and putting the opposition to bed.
00:05:14
Speaker
Otherwise, one momentary lapse and all the good work is undone. A link to that is the lack of clean sheets. Just five and only the three relegated sides have fared worse than that.
00:05:25
Speaker
It's a puzzling one, to be honest. You look at the goalkeeper, Bernd Leno, he's a good goalkeeper. He's had a long run of consecutive games. And whilst he probably hasn't been as good this season as he was in the first two seasons, I don't think it's been a bad season by him by any stretch. And then you look at the defence, Tete, Anderson, Bassey, Robinson.
00:05:44
Speaker
Again, these aren't bad defenders, so why the paucity of clean sheets? I'm not sure and it's certainly something they can improve upon.

Performance Analysis

00:05:51
Speaker
Another area where they have struggled is results against the bottom six. In fact, I'll include the bottom eight in that.
00:05:58
Speaker
Failing to beat Southampton at home, failing to beat Ipswich home or away, losing at home to Wolves, losing twice the man to Manchester United, failing to beat West Ham and failing to beat Everton. Now, in contrast, their results against the top eight have been more encouraging. So what can we put the results against those teams I've mentioned down to?
00:06:15
Speaker
Is it a mindset issue? Have they allowed for complacency to creep in? Think they only have to turn up to win? I'd like to think not, but there have undeniably been some flat performances against those sides where they've lacked the sharpness and lacked the intensity. and And I don't care who you're playing against. If you don't have that, then you're not going to win games of football.
00:06:36
Speaker
I think in one or two of those games, maybe Southampton home and Ipswich as well, they've come up against opposition who've set their stall out to defend, to sit in that low block, and Fulham haven't had the answers to break them down.
00:06:47
Speaker
Against the better sides, those teams will naturally come at Fulham, which... seems to play into their hands and they seem more comfortable being in that position. They seem to relish the underdog role more, but they need to get away from that mindset and make sure the focus is there, that the mentality is right for when they do come up against the struggling sides.
00:07:06
Speaker
However, I don't want those negatives to stain what has been a good season, but I do think it is important to highlight them so they can hopefully learn from them and we don't see them make the same mistakes next time around.
00:07:18
Speaker
But just to surmise, record points tally in the reckoning for Europe for at least two thirds of the season. i think overall very positive. If I was to mark it out of 10, I would probably give it a seven and a half.
00:07:30
Speaker
But that's just my take. You might mark it higher or lower. It's all about opinions and football is certainly a game of opinions. Right, something a little bit different in the next part. I will be handing out some awards, but for one last time, let me tell you about our sponsors.

00:08:17
Speaker
It's Player of the Year. And before I announce the recipient, I will give one or two honourable mentions. The first one is Raul Jimenez. A dozen goals in the league and he's had Rodrigo Muniz breathing down his neck for much of the season. But...
00:08:31
Speaker
There's nothing wrong with a little bit of healthy competition and I almost feel like he's thrived on it. It's spurred him on. Jimenez has gone on to have his best goal scoring season in quite some time and he might be in his mid-30s but he's shown that given the service he can still be a force to be reckoned with at the highest level.
00:08:48
Speaker
And just on a sure human level, you can't help but feel happy for him when you consider what he's been through, the journey he's been on. Following that severe head injury for Wolves, I think it was more than four and a half years ago now.
00:09:01
Speaker
So yeah, great to see him bounce back this season. Another worthy contender who, like him, there's has had 15 goal involvements is Alex Iwobi. He's very much first choice for Marco Silva and offers great versatility.
00:09:14
Speaker
In fact, I actually feel like Fulham could have possibly benefited more from him playing a bit more central at times, but he has featured predominantly on either wing for the vast majority of it.
00:09:25
Speaker
Nine goals and six assists. He's been in the Premier League a long time now, hasn't he? and And that represents his best scoring season by some distance. And there's no doubt that at the age of 29, this is the best version of Alex Iwobi anyone has seen.
00:09:39
Speaker
It's probably fair to say that he was better pre-Christmas compared to post-Christmas, but overall, I've been really encouraged with what I've seen from him. Another honourable mention is Iwobi's close friend and countryman Calvin Bassi. And I think he's come on leaps and bounds in the Fulham shirt. I think Marco Silva has spoken really glowingly about him, saying that if he can be a bit more consistent, then he has all the attributes to be top-level Premier League defender. Who am I to argue with Marco Silva's judgement?
00:10:08
Speaker
I think he's become a real leader in that defence and is someone who I can definitely see becoming captain one day. So they were all in the running, but the man who I am awarding the player of the season to is Anthony Robertson. And I know maybe in the past couple of months we haven't quite seen him at his best, but there are reasons for that. He has been dealing with an injury and at times has had to play through pain.
00:10:29
Speaker
10 assists, and yes, his last was back in February, but that's still more than any other defender. I think at the midway point he would have been in most people's Premier League team in the season. Maybe the drop-off in The closing months has changed that. But it's still been very good. His link at play with Oobi early on. Gave Fulham a dual threat from that left.
00:10:51
Speaker
His final ball has improved and the numbers indicate that. It's still not perfect, but what you can't doubt are his athletic capabilities. When he is fully fit, he's just a constant up and down that left.
00:11:02
Speaker
A real tough equation for wingers. In fact, he's had Mo Salah, the league's best player on lockdown. So for me, he continues to be one of the best left backs in the division. And he has been for a few years now, to be honest. So Anthony Robinson...
00:11:15
Speaker
He wins the first award, Fulham's player of the season. The next award is for most improved player. I'm going to keep this a little bit shorter. Iwobi would have been in the running for this for reasons I just talked about. Sasolukic has turned himself into a regular from a bit part performer, but it has to go to Calvin Bassi.
00:11:35
Speaker
I felt a bit sorry for him early on at Fulham as he was initially brought into the team and played on the right side of the fence. There was a game, if you can remember, away to Tottenham which Fulham lost and he was guilty of making errors that led to both of their goals.
00:11:49
Speaker
But since then, having moved to his more favourable position, ah his more natural position on that left, he has grown into the role. He's got great strength, agility, and we see him at times drive forward, and he's really tricky to shake off the ball when he does that.
00:12:03
Speaker
Anderson was obviously brought back last summer, but of the two, Bassey has been the better performer. There are still things he can improve on, just staying concentrated at all times, not having those lapses, but there's no doubt that he's a different player, a different man to the one that we first saw put on a Fulham shirt.
00:12:20
Speaker
The third category sees us move on to the best signing and that covers anyone that was brought in either last summer or in January, albeit there wasn't much activity in the January transfer window.
00:12:32
Speaker
I'm just going to go straight in with this one. It's Ryan Session. A lot of fans would have been happy to see him come back, but I think there was also a lot of doubt and we didn't really know what we were going to get. There was always hope that we could see him recapture the magic of when he burst onto the scene as a 16, 17 year old.
00:12:48
Speaker
But with the injuries and lack of game time at Spurs, truth be told, i I don't think there was any great expectation And look, he had to buy this time, didn't he? Up until the new year, playing time was limited.
00:12:59
Speaker
But with injuries, opportunity knocks. With Reece Nelson injured, Harry Wilson injured, and Adama Traore blowing hot and cold, he got more opportunities and he grasped them. He's played various positions, left back, left wing back, right wing.
00:13:13
Speaker
So he has shown his adaptability and he's also shown that given a chance in front of the goal, he can take it. So considering he was a free signing, in terms of value for money, it's a no-brainer that it has been the best signing.
00:13:25
Speaker
Berger, Anderson and Smith-Rowe have all shown flashes but I've lacked a bit of consistency certainly in the case of Anderson and Smith-Rowe not that I'm writing them off for one second but you'd have to say that Sessegnon has been the one signing that has probably exceeded expectations whereas in the case of Anderson and Smith-Rowe have they lived up to their price tag?
00:13:44
Speaker
I don't think they have just yet and I don't think that's being too harsh but as I said i'm not right I'm not writing them off at this stage hopefully we can see better things from them next season The next category is for best win.
00:13:56
Speaker
And there have been some very good ones in and amongst it all. 15 in total, which is equal to what they achieved two seasons ago. And you can look at the ones over Brentford. They're great, especially the one at Craven Cottage and how they were able to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat. And what scenes we saw at the end from everyone, fans, players, manager, coaching staff.
00:14:17
Speaker
If I was given an award for limbs of the season, then it would be what followed Harry Wilson's second goal that night. The win at home to Liverpool was great. Prior to that, Liverpool had only lost one Premier League game, so that was definitely one to savour.
00:14:28
Speaker
However, I am having to go for Fulham's late turnaround on Boxing Day at Stamford Bridge. Rodrigo Munez's 95th minute goal, which meant they'd won at Stamford Bridge for the first time in 45 years.
00:14:41
Speaker
Incredible scenes again. Another groundbreaking moment, a historic moment, so that gets my vote for best win. Fulham's 2-1 win over Chelsea on Boxing Day. We now move on to the best game category and I've decided to go with the 2-2 draw at Anfield.
00:14:57
Speaker
An action-packed game against the top side. Early sending off for Liverpool, Andy Robertson bringing down Harry Wilson. And Fulham went into a lead twice, but Liverpool were able to pull them back and very nearly claimed victory late on, despite the man disadvantage.
00:15:13
Speaker
Afterwards, Slott received a lot of praise for that, didn't he The way he was able to rally his troops and find a way of getting something when they were staring adversity in the face. But I feel that kind of overshadowed what Fulham did and how they went at Liverpool that day.
00:15:26
Speaker
They were a goal to the good and the better team up until Andy Robertson's red card. That sending off almost sparked Liverpool into life, created a siege mentality and the atmosphere lifted as a result. So as a contest, I thought that was just captivating, fascinating to see how the managers went about it and all in all, a very entertaining afternoon. And that fixture, Liverpool v Fulham, has low-key become a really compelling competitive Premier League fixture. Think back to the season before, the 4-3 thriller at Anfield and the quality of some of the goals on that day.
00:15:56
Speaker
From the first minute until the last minute, it was just that all action again, wasn't it? Back and forth tug of war. And of course, we had the 3-2 Fulham win at the cottage. So, yeah, despite Liverpool's success slot, he couldn't pass the silver test, could he?
00:16:08
Speaker
The final award, the final category is for Fulham goal of the season. Now I have seen a lot of love recently for Harry Wilson's first goal in the home game against Brentford. That flick that looped over Flecken's head into the back of the net.
00:16:23
Speaker
It's one of those goals and passages of play when you're watching it unfold. It's almost as if time stands still. As I said, I have seen this goal mentioned. Gary Neville said it was his pick. Is it mine?
00:16:33
Speaker
No. No, it isn't. I love Harry Wilson, but I don't think he meant that, to be perfectly honest. He might tell you that he did, but I'm still not buying it. I think what he's done, he's just tried to help it on, guide it into an area and hope that one of his teammates can get onto it at the back post.
00:16:50
Speaker
And he's just got a bit lucky. It looks great, but I can't reward a goal that has an element of good fortune to it. So I'm going to go for something else. The Andres Pereira goal that the Etihad is in the mix because of the assist, that back-heel flick from Raul Jimenez.
00:17:04
Speaker
And that was intentional. There was nothing lucky about that. But it's not that one. I'm actually going to give it to Alex Iwobi. And you're probably actually thinking of that curling effort at home to Wolves. But it is, in fact, for the one he scored against his former side, Everton at Goodison Park.
00:17:19
Speaker
And Emile Smith-Rowe plays a big role in this goal. He picks the ball up and drives forward from the left. A couple of Everton defenders try to tackle him but they can't. And Smith Rowe takes it infield.
00:17:30
Speaker
Lays it off to Iwobi who himself then travels with it. Dribbling with the ball one foot to the other. And with Everton defenders in front of him he just casually tucks it away into Pickford's bottom corner. A lot of you have probably forgotten about that goal or it wouldn't even be on your radar. But I just really liked it. It was so clean and cool.
00:17:47
Speaker
Smith Rowe doing what we haven't seen enough of. And Iwobi just finding himself a pocket of space through the middle. Again, something I'd like to see a bit more of because he showed that even what he can do from those sort of positions.
00:17:59
Speaker
Again, you'll have other goals which you enjoyed more and that's fine. But from a personal standpoint, that is my winner for best goal category. And with that, this concludes the daily Fulham award ceremony. But do stay tuned as we still have more to come.

00:19:01
Speaker
The season finished what two days ago, but you can be sure that planning is already underway for next season. We've seen a lot of talk and a lot of intense speculation about the manager in the last couple of weeks and where his future lies.
00:19:15
Speaker
Despite rumoured interest from Saudi Arabia, he has come out and said that he will be at Fulham next season. I really hope he is a man of his word. It can't be easy as a manager when you are asked to comment on speculation and rumours of other jobs.
00:19:29
Speaker
But he's always answered those questions quite emphatically. He's always said he is committed to Fulham. He's not added any fuel to the fire by saying things like, I'll have to chat to the board or that he needs to seek assurances.
00:19:41
Speaker
So fair play to him for that. But if a lucrative offer did come his way, then he probably would be foolish to at least not consider it. I think some talk has resurfaced about Spurs again, and you would have hoped that that had disappeared after their Europa League triumph. I mean, now that they have Champions League football, it it would be an enticing role. And there's no doubt Marco Silva is an ambitious man.
00:20:04
Speaker
I'm sure he wants to be back managing in the Champions League, but for the sake of Fulham, they need to be doing everything they can to ensure he remains at the club. Because he has done a magnificent job in stabilising things after years of, well, instability.
00:20:18
Speaker
The crazy thing is, and and yeah, i I know social media isn't the best place to gauge the general consensus, but there are the odd folk imbeciles, call them what you want, that think Silva isn't the man to take Fulham forward.
00:20:31
Speaker
I mean, are you kidding me? He's just guided the club to a record Premier League points tally. He continues to get a tune out of players who were castaways elsewhere and he's achieving things that previous managers could only dream of.
00:20:44
Speaker
So just be grateful because Marco Silva will probably leave Fulham at some point in the next few years. And I have no doubt that when that day does come, he'll have left the club in a better position than he found it when he took over.
00:20:57
Speaker
So there's a a bit of chat

Player Departures and Transfers

00:20:59
Speaker
about the manager. So coming on to the playing side, there will no doubt be turnover. We know that Willian and Carlos Vinicius have played their final games and there'll be more to follow them out the door.
00:21:10
Speaker
We wait on Kenny Tete as his deal is due to expire very soon. Myself, like the majority, would want him to stay. Up until his injury Anfield, he was very dependable, consistent in his displays, and they definitely missed him when he was not in the side.
00:21:25
Speaker
We've seen them give new deals to Traore, Wilson and Jimenez, so I'd be really hopeful that there's one. There for Tete. And i think I think the player would want to stay. He's a popular figure. He's at a place where he feels the love. So hopefully something can be sorted out there.
00:21:41
Speaker
The other one we wait on is, of course, the skipper, Tom Kearney. We saw him lead the team out on Sunday. Was that a farewell gesture? I don't know. What i do know is that Tom has been...
00:21:52
Speaker
immense for Fulham 10 years at the club over 350 appearances and it will be a sad day for all concerned if he does depart but he needs to look out for himself I mean he's 34 years of age now ah think he's easily got another two or three years left in him at least another two or three years in him But it's what he wants to do at this stage. Is he content to be a bit part player for a Premier League side? or Or does he want a bit more? Does he want to be somewhere where he is starting most games?
00:22:18
Speaker
So will the club offer him a new deal? I think they probably will. Whether or not he accepts it, only he probably knows at this stage. But whether he does end up staying or going, he's already at club legend status.
00:22:30
Speaker
And that's one thing that certainly isn't going to change. Elsewhere there will be outgoings and of course that's largely dependent on offers. Harrison Reid is in a similar position to Kearney. He's been part of furniture for a long time. Not quite as long as Kearney but he's been through the good and bad.
00:22:47
Speaker
It's a shame to see how his season came to an abrupt end with that injury against Everton, but you wonder where he's at now in his Fulham career. I think midfield is definitely an area Fulham will look to target in the summer, and with new additions, you wonder where that may leave Reid in the pecking order.
00:23:03
Speaker
Isidjop could also be on his way out. He's not been featuring in matchday squads. Could that signal the end for him? It's shame in a way, because I felt when he did play, when he was given a chance to start, he generally did quite well.
00:23:15
Speaker
Pereira is another one. We know he's not very popular amongst the fans. And if a substantial offer did come in, then he may be another to depart. As far as incomings go, I'm not going to talk about names. It would be folly to do so at this stage. I mean, truth is, you're going to see so many names mentioned in the next two or three months and most of them.
00:23:36
Speaker
There's going to be nothing to it. In fact, what generally happens is that one person's name will get dragged up constantly for weeks on end and then they'll eventually sign someone that wasn't even rumoured, wasn't even linked.
00:23:47

But as far as positions go, I certainly feel the midfield needs looking at. I think the Berger-Lukic partnership can work for certain gain games, but i feel like they need another option in there. One that is a bit more creative.

I also think they'll be keen to bring another wide player in. It was interesting that we saw Rhys Nelson posing for the team photo after the City game. Massive shame how his season panned out because he did show promise in the games he did play. And I know the manager is a fan of his, but you also have to be aware of his injury record. So whether they do decide to go in for Nelson, maybe offer him a permanent deal, I i don't know. But I'd be surprised if they didn't bring in another wide option.

And whatever business they do end up doing, I hope the majority of it is done early to give them time to settle in for pre-season where they're in a position to go for that first game in August.

Future Expectations and Podcast Reflection

We know the cons and how they operate, how it is often a lastminute.com job, but i I never feel scrambling around on deadline day is a position you ideally want to find yourselves in. But whatever happens, whoever does come in, whoever does depart, I think the aim next season will be to improve and get more points, finish higher in the table.

So the pressure is on slightly more and expectations will be greater, but I would just urge everyone if they can to not lose their sense of perspective. Progression is key and if they can get themselves closer to Europe then great, and if they can go far in a cup also great, but just because Palace win a trophy and Forest almost make the Champions League, don't let their success move the goalposts.

Because as we all know, comparison is the thief of joy. So think that's that place to finish. Before I sign off, I'd like to say a massive thank you to everyone who's taken time out of their day at one time or another to listen to the podcast.

Honestly, it means so much. Thank you for having the patience to stick around. Believe it or not, there was... a time when there was three of us on this podcast for a short space of time but I've had to go alone for the past six months and with that it's brought about some challenges but I've kept going because of you guys it's been my obligation my duty to carry on because there are people out there in various parts of the world that listen to me babble on and try to make sense of something when I'm probably not making much sense at all I'd love to tell you where the podcast goes from here, what the future holds, but I can't because I honestly don't know.

Would I like to be back and do it all again next season? I would, but things would probably need to change. We started this journey more than nine months ago and we packed a lot in during that time.

And if it is the end, I can say that I've had a great time. I've learned a lot. And I'd like to think I've done an okay sort of job. ah Look, whatever happens, happens. But once again, thank you for your continued support.
