Introduction and Welcome

00:00:05
Speaker
sports podcast network work Hello and welcome back to the Daily Fulham Podcast brought to you by the Global Sports Podcast Network, bringing you the latest news and views from across the Premier League as well as women's football.
00:00:18
Speaker
My name is Gavin Ruffield, your host as always, and happy Easter to all of those who celebrate. Happy Bank Holiday weekend to those of you in the UK. Let's hope we get some good weather to mark the occasion. Right, what have we got on the agenda today?

Preview of the West London Derby

00:00:32
Speaker
Well, today I'm looking ahead to the weekend's game where we have a West London derby in store. Fulham host Chelsea and they're looking to create a bit of history.
00:00:41
Speaker
A momentous occasion possibly on the weekend as Fulham will attempt to do the double over Chelsea for the first time ever. And that's following their success earlier on in the campaign back in December. Fulham coming from a goal down to end up winning the game two one When they managed that first win, that elusive win at Stamford Bridge, first time they were able to do that for 45 years, following that Rodrigo Muniz last minute win, which turned the game on its head, which sparked wild scenes of jubilation and euphoria.
00:01:10
Speaker
What a day, what an outing that was for Fulham. Fulham have also been starved of success in this fixture at Craven Cottage, just the two wins in Premier League meetings at home. The last of those was a couple of seasons ago and they won by the same scoreline, by two goals to one. João Felix was sent off for Chelsea and the winning goal was nodded in by Carlos Vinicius, who, believe it or not, is still at Fulham. He's still knocking around there somewhere. He scored the winning goal on that occasion. Again, that was a great evening for all

Fulham's Performance Patterns

00:01:37
Speaker
Fulham fans. But Fulham, they are coming into this game, trying to bounce back again to continue this trend of form, which we've seen recently.
00:01:44
Speaker
Win-lose, win-lose, win-lose, win-lose. So following Monday's disappointment at Bournemouth, hopefully they continue that trend and this one ends in a Fulham win. They've been very inconsistent, haven't they? Well, I said it the other day, didn't Is it inconsistent or is it very consistent? We don't know if it's predictable or unpredictable. if It's probably been a little bit frustrating for the manager himself, hasn't it, Marco Silva, in the fact that you can see his side perform so capably.
00:02:08
Speaker
Beat Liverpool, put three past them and then the next game they just don't look the same outfit despite the same players. On the pitch, and I stand by what I said the other day, it's easy to be prisoner of the moment and be very reactionary.
00:02:20
Speaker
I tend not to, I try to have a bit of perspective but I felt it was a very... poor performance from Fulham especially in the passing and we'll need to see a better performance from Fulham if they're able to get something from this game but I do feel like they do have a genuine chance because they do seem to raise their game for those sides in the so-called traditional big six and they have fared well against sides above them in the league and it's an important game again as they continue their march you would hope towards Europe it's looking likely that the eighth place will will secure Europa Conference League football. I think it's unlikely that Fulham will finish any higher than that just because of their sheer inconsistency.
00:02:56
Speaker
If they had won against Bournemouth then going into this weekend they would have had a chance to go level with Chelsea. That's not the case. and They've just been unable to string consecutive wins together at any real stage this season. Certainly no more than two. So that's just held them back slightly.
00:03:12
Speaker
But nevertheless, it's still been a successful season. There's still lots to play for in the last six games.

Europa Conference League Significance

00:03:18
Speaker
And the Europa Conference League, it still would be a ah massive achievement for them if they did qualify for that. Maybe fans of other clubs might not pay great attention to the Europa Conference League, feel it's not an important competition. But feel like for clubs the size of Fulham, Bournemouth and Brighton, clubs who aren't used to qualifying for Europe every season.
00:03:36
Speaker
I know Brighton have been there recently. I know Fulham have been there as well and had a great run in the Europa League getting all the way to the final. but that's going back 15 16 years so it would be great to be back in the Europa Conference League and I also feel like in that competition you never know you could end up going a long way in it and possibly winning it we saw what West Ham did a couple of seasons ago and they've dined out on that ever since haven't they and look what a day it was for them winning a major piece of silverware it's not incomprehensible to think that Fulham or one of those other sides could go all the way in that competition there's some not so high standard sides in that in that competition and
00:04:08
Speaker
It gives you a chance to rest and rotate players, which is something you have to contend with as well, managing your squad. But obviously we'll cross that bridge when they get there, if and when they do get there. But yeah, I certainly feel like it holds major importance for Fulham to qualify for that competition as it does those other sides I've already mentioned and possibly for the manager as well, because his name has come up.
00:04:28
Speaker
with links to other clubs, hasn't it? We've seen Spurs, we don't know what's going to go on there. They managed to progress in the Europa League, so they still have a chance of ending the season with Silva after what's been a real disappointment in the league campaign.
00:04:42
Speaker
Ange Postacoglu's been under intense pressure because of results in the league, losing far too many games, so you can understand why Marco Silva's name has been linked in dispatches because of the job he has done with Fulham since securing promotion back to the Premier League, and I think What he's done is managed to make Fulham a real steady and formidable outfit in the Premier League and steadied the ship from where they were before, which was a side yo-yoing back and forth between the Premier League and the Championship. And we've seen how hard it is for sides getting promoted in the last two seasons to...
00:05:14
Speaker
make a good fist of it and end up surviving. But Fulham have done

Marco Silva's Impact on Fulham

00:05:17
Speaker
that comfortably in the course over the course of the last three seasons. And they've got Marco Silva to thank for that. I know Tony Khan's come out. He did an interview ah in the week saying what huge asset he is to Fulham. He wants him to stay at the club forever. But you can understand why there's advances and there's interest from elsewhere. So maybe Fulham fans, it's within your best interest to hope that Spurs go all the way in the Europa League.
00:05:39
Speaker
Ange Postacoglu said earlier in the season, didn't he, that he always wins things in the second season. Well, ultimately he might end up being proven right and for Fulham's sake that might just be what they need because it means that Spurs will retain that Antipas the Coglu services for next season and Barclay still may remain at Fulham he's been very loyal to the club hasn't he remembering back a couple of seasons ago when he knocked back the offer from Saudi Arabia for big money to go over there committed his long term future to Fulham and yeah I'm sure every Fulham fan wants him to stay beyond the season and for many seasons to come but
00:06:11
Speaker
you know, with success comes in interest from elsewhere. So yeah, I'm absolutely not surprised that there is talk of his name coming up for other jobs. So just getting back to this game and the rest of the Premier League campaign, not only is it a big game for Fulham, of course, it is a West London derby.
00:06:25
Speaker
It's a chance to right the wrongs from Monday, win again at Craven Cottage. But also looking at some of the other games they have to play this season, they can also be spoilers. The fact that they do play Chelsea, they play Aston the Villa, they play Manchester City on the last game the season. All of these sides in the running for Champions League qualification. So whilst Fulham aren't in that running themselves, which Marco Silva maybe feels they have left so many points out on the table that they could be, they're not.
00:06:48
Speaker
But they do have the chance to play spoiler and maybe ruin one of those club seasons. And I think most Fulham fans would hope it's Chelsea starting on the weekend. And I'll come on to Chelsea in the second part, speak a little bit more about

Chelsea's Recent Challenges

00:07:30
Speaker
So Chelsea do come into this game after a bit of a setback in midweek, losing their Europa League game against Ligia Warsaw. 2-1 at home, but they did qualify, so that was the main priority to qualify. And they'd basically done that in the first leg, winning their 3-0. But still, very disappointing. Unexpected result, that going down 2-1 to Ligia Warsaw.
00:07:51
Speaker
Booze at full time, and it continues this sort of run of form they've been in. The fans have been very disgruntled of what they've seen recently. It's not quite been good enough. And despite the fact that they are six in the league, just a point behind Manchester City, not far behind Nottingham Forest, they do have a realistic chance of getting in the Champions League.
00:08:08
Speaker
It seems so it's not quite so rosy in the garden. And you can definitely see why. Then again, their form has been deceptively decent. I think if you look at the last six, they've lost just one in the league. But having said that, they have played some of the teams near the bottom end of the table. So they have been quite fortunate in the fixtures.
00:08:24
Speaker
They managed to come from two goals down in the last league game at home to Ipswich, but then that would have been a disappointing result because that's two points lost on some of the other sides in that race for Champions League football against one of those sides that are going to get relegated. So despite you know the efforts to come back, you still look at it and there's a disappointing result. And I think fans are not happy with the football they're seeing.
00:08:46
Speaker
They're not able to get the best out of some of their players. I think you look at the goal contributions from some of their players Their attacking players, Cole Palmer, no goals in 15. Nicholas Jackson, no goals in 12.
00:08:58
Speaker
Nkunku, no goals in 8. And that's not good enough. And I think Cole Palmer, his form, I think you've got to understand he's still a young player, isn't he? This is still just the second season where he's been an established first team player.
00:09:12
Speaker
Okay, he was at Manchester City before, but he was only ah bit part player there, a squad player, you could say. I think he took everyone by surprise with his performances and the goals and assists he had for Chelsea last season. and I mean, I certainly wasn't expecting that when he made the move from Manchester City. When he made that move initially, i was I was kind of wondering, is he going to be a bit of a squad player in and out of the side? But not only did he yeah cement this place in the team, but he was the main man. And I was actually surprised that they did play him in the Europa League tie in midweek, knowing that they basically...
00:09:42
Speaker
It's absolute nonsense, isn't it? was just maybe to give him a bit of confidence because he has gone so long without a goal to try and get that goal under his belt and give him a bit more confidence going and into the rest of the season and you see the usual troe don't you on social media after a player goes through a bad run i've seen that with phil fden as well they always say oh they're overrated they're a fraud they were never that good it's absolute nonsense isn't it They're still relatively young players in the infancy of their careers.
00:10:08
Speaker
And with young players, it's only natural that you're going to go through peaks and troughs. There's always going to be a dip at some point. You're not the finished article. And this is probably the first setback that Cole Palmer, from a personal standpoint, has had to deal with in his career. And even if he doesn't score too many goals for the rest of the season, doesn't have the success individually that he would like, I have no doubt going into next season.
00:10:28
Speaker
that we'll we'll see Cole Palmer return to the peak of his powers and you'll see the Cole Palmer that we saw in the first half of this season and and pretty much the entirety of last season. So let's not write him off. He is still a top player. It's just he is enjoying a bit of a tough time at the minute as are Chelsea. Not quite getting the results.
00:10:44
Speaker
Despite just losing one of the last six in the league, if you go further back and look at the last 10... The last 10 games, they are 11th in the form, guys. So that's not where they want to be. They don't want to be ending the season in poor form after doing so well for for the majority of it. And despite some of their frailties and vulnerabilities over the last three, four months, they're still in a good position and it's still in their hands to get that fifth place.
00:11:08
Speaker
They do have some tough games coming up. I think they play Liverpool. ramp at Newcastle and Nottingham Forest on the last day of the season. Who knows how important that game could be because Nottingham Forest have just had a couple of tough outings recently, a couple of tough results. So as long as they stay in contention, as long as they stay in touch with Nottingham Forest, that could end up being a decider for Champions League football. and and The wheel started to turn for the manager himself, hasn't he? Enzo Moreska.
00:11:31
Speaker
He was tasked with ah an extremely difficult job at the start the season. and Chelsea almost in transition with the amount of players they've had at the football club. and It's a big leap for him to go from the Championship to A club that's used to fighting for titles, used to competing for trophies. This is a guy that hasn't got great pedigree. He's not got tremendous experience, is he? Certainly not in top flight management.
00:11:53
Speaker
So a big task for him. And I think for the first part of the season, he did extremely well, didn't he? To navigate Chelsea to the position in the table that they that they were, to the point where I think for the first 10-15 games, they were almost in the the conversation for the title. But I think that was never realistic. And he said that himself. The more pressing batter was trying to qualify for Europe, trying to get in the Champions League.
00:12:14
Speaker
where they spent the majority of the last 20 years and because of where the club has been for the majority of the last 20 years being in the Europa League being in the Conference League isn't any sort of success but now that they are in the Europa Conference League and they are in the semi-finals you feel like they have to go on and win it anything short of winning that competition would be deemed as a failure Mureska will want to get that under his belt. It's not the trophy. Chelsea fans will want to see their side win. They want us to see them compete for the Premier League and ultimately compete for the Champions League as well in time. But that will take time. But still, at Chelsea, you are expected to win trophies. Even managers that do win trophies end up getting sacked. So, his trophy is still success.
00:12:53
Speaker
No matter where you rank that trophy in the pecking order. So, that'll be crucial for Enzo Mureska to get that under his belt. Just to quieten some of the noise. Because we have heard some noise recently. We've heard the boos in midweek.
00:13:04
Speaker
following that defeat against Ligi Walser and the pressure will ramp up on him because of what's gone on in the past. This hire and fire model that that we saw under Abramovich, that we're seeing under Todd Bowley, they don't stick with a plan, they don't stick with a long-term project, do they? So success is demanded and if you don't achieve it, even if you do achieve it, you can be on the chopping block. So very important last few games of the season for Chelsea in Europe and in The league, and the talk about the lack of goal threat from the attacking players, I think Kukurea from the left-back is the top scorer in 2025 for them. So that just illustrates the problems they have had in the fact that their left-back is their biggest goal threat. I've been disappointed with some of their attacking players. Jadon Sancho, I know he contributed in the game against Ipswich, didn't he? But you felt for him maybe getting away from Manchester United, that was a move he needed to...
00:13:58
Speaker
get his career back on track and maybe we would start to see the football we saw out in Germany where he looked to be his best but it's been very disappointing for him Pedro Neto, I was big fan of Pedro Neto during his time at Wolves again that move to Chelsea I mean has has that worked out would you say that's been a success no some of the signings they have made and we know they've made a lot signings they just haven't quite lived up to what you would have hoped for I do feel like Chelsea's season could potentially be on the brink of collapse, of imploding.
00:14:30
Speaker
Just given what I've seen in recent performances, they certainly haven't been convincing even in the games that they have won. I predicted a few weeks back that they would be the team that missed out on Champions League football and I stand by that just given their form and given some of the fixtures they have left to play.
00:14:45
Speaker
But they could make everyone look silly, couldn't they, by qualifying for the Champions League and winning the Europa Conference League. And at the same time, that wouldn't completely surprise you, would If Cole Palmer nets on the weekend, and I know Fulham fans are fearful of that given his lack of goals recently, but if he does score on the weekend, then you can imagine that being the goal to recapture that confidence and rejuvenate him for the rest of the campaign, and he could potentially drive Chelsea into those Champions League places.
00:15:11
Speaker
And you've got Nicholas Jackson as well, who's been misfiring. I gave that stat earlier, didn't I? The fact that he hasn't scored a goal in 12 games. But it only takes one game. It only takes one goal. doesn't matter if it's off your backside, off your knee. It's a worldie from 25 yards. It doesn't really matter.
00:15:25
Speaker
Goals give confidence to strikers. And he hit a purple patch earlier on in the season, but we haven't seen him replicate those sort of levels. But... a goal on the weekend and all of a sudden he's a different character, he's a different beast, he's buzzing in around the training ground, he's going into games with that confidence and that's bringing his step.
00:15:42
Speaker
Hopefully for all Fulham fans' sake they don't give these players the confidence ah that pick me up for the rest of the season. So if they can end the season positively, then it can still end up being a great campaign from one at the moment where it just seems like it's on the edge of possibly breaking down where there is a lot of pressure on the manager, where fans are a little bit disgruntled.
00:16:00
Speaker
The best way to shut out the noise and quell that feeling of uncertainty is to get results. And a win for Chelsea on weekend will at least go some way to doing that, which will pile pressure on some of the other clubs in and around them.
00:16:12
Speaker
Okay, I've said my piece on Chelsea there. In the final part, I will be addressing team news, looking at likely 11s, before rounding things off with a prediction. All that to come after this quick message.

Fulham Squad Updates

00:17:02
Speaker
now. Some very encouraging positive news that come out the Fulham camp in the last week or so is that Harry Wilson has returned to full training.
00:17:10
Speaker
We haven't seen Harry Wilson since the defeat to Manchester United at the back end of January. Went off injured early on in the second half there with an ankle injury that's kept him out ever since. So absolutely buzzing with that news from a Welsh perspective and from a Fulham perspective, of course, as well, because he was playing a really important role at that stage, wasn't he?
00:17:29
Speaker
Earlier on in the season, he was ah having an influence coming off the bench, came off the bench at Stamford Bridge to score, didn't he? And he was certainly having an impact on the team. So it was unfortunate for him to have that injury, but great that he's back now and hopefully he can play a major part for the rest of the season. I think Fulham now have pretty much a full bill of health as far as the whole squad goes.
00:17:48
Speaker
with Kenny Tetty back fit now as well, the only one on the ranks that's injured. Well, I don't even know if you can say he's part of the ranks now because he's gone back to Arsenal as Reece Nelson. So aside from that, Fulham are at full strength for the first time in a good few months now and he'll be a welcome addition back into that squad ah because there has been talk recently about certain personnel maybe needing a rest, maybe being tired. So the fact that Harry Wilson is now back in the squad maybe for the weekend he just adds another little nuance another little wrinkle someone that could potentially come off the bench i think it'll be too soon for him to start but certainly if all them need a goal then harry wilson is a perfect player come off the bench as he's proven few times this season hasn't he
00:18:30
Speaker
What do I expect the Fulham line-up to look like? Are we expecting changes from the result against Bournemouth? I don't think so, certainly not wholesale changes, because you have to remember that the players that played against Bournemouth were the players that also played against Liverpool.
00:18:42
Speaker
It was just disappointment in terms of the performance levels against Bournemouth because they weren't able to replicate what we saw in the last home game. don't think you can go into games hoping a player is going to perform well. With Kenny Tete, before had that injury he was consistently 7 or 8 out 10 every week.
00:19:01
Speaker
and i don't think you can go into games hoping a player's going to perform well with kenny tet a before he had that injury against liverpool he was consistently seven or eight out ten every week You knew what you were going to get with him. With Timothy Castagne, it's kind of hold your breath, hope for the best. And I think it is time for Kenny Tette. Now that he has been back in the matchday squad for the last couple of games, I would like to see him start from the outset because I think at this minute in time, he is a better option than Castagne. If you remember back to the game at Stamford Bridge, this was actually the first time we saw Fulham revert to that five at the back. And it worked, I guess, on that occasion. I've not been a fan of seeing it since.
00:19:39
Speaker
I hope Marco Silva isn't considering going back to the five at the back because I just don't feel you get the best out Fulham's players. Certain personnel don't suit that system. He might be tempted by that option. You never know, but know as As far as personnel, ah that would be the only change I would look to make. I express my concerns about the midfield area, maybe the lack of creativity from Berger-Lukic pivot, if you want to call it that. I feel for this game, it's probably right he sticks with that, but feel like in future games, for instance, the Southampton game next week, that may be something he might need to ponder, might need to consider about getting a bit more creativity in the centre of the park.
00:20:16
Speaker
But think for this game, I would certainly be happy, content with them to stick with that. As for Chelsea, I think there's only one real injury, concern or headache for them and that that's the fitness of Romeo Lavia. He played the game against Arsenal prior to the international break and then he had a setback so he's missed the last couple of games. And I think generally his absence has been felt by Chelsea this season and maybe that dip in form has coincided with his absence. Because I think when he is on the pitch for Chelsea, when he is available, i think he is a reassuring presence for Kayser when he does play alongside him.
00:20:47
Speaker
maybe we haven't necessarily seen the best of Caicedo since his absence and Rolavia he's got to find a way of staying fit enough because injuries meant we didn't see him last season we've only seen a bit of him this season but I think he is a really good player and I think when he is fully fit he certainly adds something he adds a bit of bite and also technical ability in that Chelsea midfield which maybe they have lacked a bit of recently just going back to that fuller midfield conundrum as well I think for a game like this with Cole Palmer You are still wary about him and what he can do despite his lack of goals.
00:21:18
Speaker
He's had one or two assists recently but even then, not to the degree we were seeing in the first half of the season, And certainly not to the degree we saw throughout the whole of the last campaign. I think it does make sense to have a a more defensive midfield with someone like Cole Palmer, is one of the best attacking midfielders in the league.
00:21:36
Speaker
But also you do have the options with Harry Wilson now in in the mix with players to come off the bench and impact the game, which was another thing that was extremely disappointing on Monday was how not one of those players that came off the bench made an impact.
00:21:48
Speaker
in that game and if they are to make changes on the weekend during the game hopefully the players that do come off ah the players are actually supposed to be coming off another player to highlight before i give a score prediction and wrap things up is from the chelsea team and if he does indeed play that is tossing returning to familiar surroundings i'm sure he'll get a lovely reception on sunday Maybe not.
00:22:09
Speaker
But on a serious note, I think he is someone that can be targeted at Fulham. He had good days, but he also had bad days where he was just prone to doing some daft things. The goalkeeping position has also been a troubling area for the visitors. I wouldn't be fooled by the stats that tell you that Sanchez has one of the best save rates this season.
00:22:27
Speaker
If I was a Chelsea fan, he wouldn't fill me with a great deal

Derby Strategy and Predictions

00:22:30
Speaker
of confidence. So I definitely do see some weaknesses in that back line that hopefully Fulham are able to exploit. So how do I see this game going?
00:22:39
Speaker
Will we see the Fulham we saw against Liverpool or will we see the Fulham we saw against Bournemouth? I think we'll see ah version, I'm hoping at least, similar to the one we saw against Liverpool, where they're focused on putting their game forward, not worried so much about what the opposition can do and how they can threaten them, look at themselves and how they can cause problems for Chelsea.
00:22:59
Speaker
And of course, they'll be buoyed by the fact that they beat them earlier on the season. It's a West London derby, so I'm expecting a good atmosphere. Bank holiday weekend, Sunday 2pm kickoff.
00:23:09
Speaker
And yeah, the chance of creating history of of becoming the first side to do the double over their rivals. So I do feel confident that Fulham will put in a good display, certainly better than one we saw last time around.
00:23:22
Speaker
Will that be enough to win the game? I think it will be because we have seen Fulham this season. They fared well, they fared better at Craven Cottage, certainly against those better performing sides, those sides ahead of them in the league.
00:23:34

The times they have become a cropper at Craven Cottage is when they've played against sides that sit in, put 10 men behind the ball, and they find it difficult to break them down. You don't imagine Chelsea will set up in that way, but I feel like Fulham will get a positive result. I think Chelsea, the lack of recovery time, I wouldn't get preoccupied with that because obviously they were playing at home, so there's no element of travel involved.

They did rest and rotate, although having said that, i was surprised that we saw Cole Palmer playing that game, even though he was substituted. But I fancy Fulham to get the job done here. And I actually fancy them to do it comfortably. I think Fulham will win this game 2-0. And it's very rare for me to predict Fulham to keep a clean sheet.

But that's indeed what I'm going to go for here. Fulham to get back on track, to continue that trend. Win-lose, win-lose, win-lose, lose win lose win And they will do the double over Chelsea and that will take them past the 50 point mark and closing in, you would hope at least, on their record points tally in the Premier League. And then it just changes so dramatically, changes so quickly, doesn't it? Football, the high of Liverpool, the low of Bournemouth and then potentially the high again of beating Chelsea. Which will, of course, go down a treat with all Fulham fans attending the game and those following from afar.

That'll do it for today's preview. Look ahead to the West London and Derby on the weekend as Fulham look to create that bit of history. Thank you all once again for listening and make sure to tune in next time where I will be covering all the key events from that game.
