Introduction and Derby Preview

00:00:01
Speaker
Every club. Every day. The Global Sports Podcast Network. Hello and welcome back to the Daily Fulham Podcast brought to you by the Global Sports Podcast Network.
00:00:14
Speaker
Bringing you the latest news and views from across the Premier League and women's football. My name is Gavin Ruffell and today I'm looking ahead to the London Derby that takes place on Sunday as Fulham host Spurs at Craven Cottage.
00:00:27
Speaker
It's a chance for Fulham to bounce back after that disappointing outing last week, that late heartache, that stoppage time last second goal against Brighton.
00:00:38
Speaker
And the week always seems to go longer, doesn't it, when you lose in such a dramatic fashion so late on in a game. It always seems to be a long week before the next game. think I said after their defeat against Crystal Palace, it was probably best that at that time they had a game just around the corner so they could get it out of their system straight

Fulham's Resilience and European Ambitions

00:00:54
Speaker
away. And they managed to do that with a win against Wolves.
00:00:57
Speaker
And that's something they've actually done well this season. They have responded well to setbacks. You don't want to lose games, but the reaction is the most important thing after that. You don't want things to fester and you don't want it to spiral out of control.
00:01:10
Speaker
So I've been looking through the results from the course of the season. They've actually only suffered back-to-back defeats once. And that was all the way back in October when they lost successive games away at Man City and home to Aston Villa.
00:01:23
Speaker
So they want to avoid that. And as I said, they generally have responded well to setbacks this season. and The last three defeats they have suffered, they've all been followed up with a win. So... Hopefully for Fulham. Hopefully for Fulham fans that can continue this weekend.
00:01:37
Speaker
What they will want to try and rectify is their record in London derbies. After having a good run for the best part of a year. They have just lost the last couple setbacks against West Ham and Crystal Palace.
00:01:50
Speaker
What they possibly do have... Working to their advantage this weekend is that they do have an extra few days recovery on Spurs. In fact, Spurs have played twice since Fulham's last game. So maybe Fulham will have the fresher legs, but Spurs do come into this game as well, maybe with a bit of momentum, maybe with a bit of a spring in their step, given their results in Europe. And speaking of Europe,
00:02:10
Speaker
Fulham still cling on to hope that they can qualify you for Europe come the end of the season. Results again in midweek going pretty well for English clubs with the exception of Liverpool. All of the other clubs advancing which again increases the likelihood of extra places being available via...
00:02:28
Speaker
Champions League, Europa League and Conference League. and There was a lot of doom and gloom and negativity after that Brighton result last week. A lot of reactionary comments and people saying the season's over. Well, certainly as far as the league's concerned. But it's still tight and a win here on the weekend and they can get themselves back in the mix again. And who knows? Who knows? um There's certainly still lot to play for. The season most certainly isn't over.
00:02:50
Speaker
It is, however, the last game before the international break and you want to go into the international break on a high. It's the worst possible time to lose, isn't it? Because you're dwelling on that for two weeks and in fact it's longer than two weeks for Fulham because Fulham's next league game after the Spurs encounter isn't until the 1st of April. The next action after the international break is of course that.
00:03:10
Speaker
All-important FA Cup quarterfinal against Crystal Palace. So you want to go into that international break on a high with positive

Memorable Fulham-Spurs Matches and Commercial Break

00:03:17
Speaker
vibes. If we look back to the meeting earlier on in the season, it ended in a 1-0 draw. Fulham played really well at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
00:03:24
Speaker
Tom Kearney's equaliser cancelling out the goal from Brennan Johnson. Tom Kearney also getting shown the red card later on in that game for a challenge on Dejan Kulicevski. And Fulham played well, and they were playing well during that period. That was an interesting period because that was a month in December where they had a lot of tough games, at least on paper anyway, and they came through unscathed.
00:03:42
Speaker
And they were proving really tough to beat. However, there were a lot of draws, so it's just interesting how things have changed around in the last sort of month and a half where he were seen where they were seen as kind of draw specialists, along with Brighton actually.
00:03:56
Speaker
but maybe we're just not winning enough games whereas you compare that to the form we've just seen recently it seems to be win one lose one win a couple lose one so wins are valuable aren't they at this stage more so than drawing a couple of games if you win one lose one obviously that's an extra point isn't it so yeah a win here on a weekend and they'll put them right in the mix again if we look further back if we look back to the meeting and last season when these two sides met it's quirk of the fixture list and weird coincidence that that game was played on the 16th of March 2024 and this game will be played on the 16th of March 2025 so it's it's just very strange how those things seem to seem to happen.
00:04:37
Speaker
Fulham will be looking to replicate that performance and result. 3-0 win on that occasion. A brace from Rodrigo Muniz with a Sasa Lukic goal sandwiched in between.
00:04:48
Speaker
I think a lot of Fulham fans regard that as one of their better performances last season and Performances at home recently haven't been up to the level they would have hoped for, barring that Nottingham Forest game.
00:05:00
Speaker
So another win here at Craven Cottage would would be more than welcome, wouldn't it? But obviously Spurs will have other ideas and I'll come on to the visitors in the next part just after a few words about our sponsors.

If you're ready to tell your story, check out the link in the show description to learn more about Zencastr. As I said, Spurs do come into this game with a bit of a spring in their step after that win in Europe in midweek.
00:05:44
Speaker
And it was a massive win. You can't underestimate the importance of that. Having overcome goal deficit in the first leg, there would have been a lot of pressure going into that game. A lot of people saying that was the defining season game. If they had exited Europe there, then a lot of pressure would have mounted on Ange. And who knows what would have happened after that. So they did show a bit ticker, a bit of character to come through that. this So they're still in that competition.
00:06:05
Speaker
And they're still in with a decent chance of winning, it you would say. It's probably not the strongest field. There's um some mediocre teams maybe be in that competition. so If Manchester United and Spurs are two of the favourites to win it, that um probably tells you all you need to know, doesn't it? yeah Very important for them to get through because it can define their season. Their season rests on that because because they're not where they want to be in their league. They're not fighting for Europe via their league position.
00:06:29
Speaker
They're having to rely on the Europa League. to get back there and pressure was certainly starting to mount on Ange heading into the game if they had exited would they have relieved him of his duties I guess we'll never know i personally think they probably would have just kept him on until the end of the season and don't see the point in sacking him with nine or ten games to go to be perfectly honest and and he probably would have felt the pressure himself and I think extra pressure would have been put on him based on some of the comments he made earlier in the season and he was asked that at the press conference before the game wasn't he about those comments when he said in an interview after a game that he said he always wins something in his second season and i just wonder if he may be regretted making those comments because they can always come back to bite you can't they and you know full well if they don't go on to lift a piece of silver where
00:07:18
Speaker
then that's going to be shown time and time again and again it's going to be used as a stick to beat him with. So he kind of flat batted it, didn't he? But he's probably thought to himself, maybe I shouldn't have said something like that. When you're in interviews after the game, straight after a loss, for instance, it's difficult to control your emotions and say the right things, isn't it? So maybe wasn't his intention to let something like that slip, but he he let it slip and um ultimately if they do go on to win Europa League, then he can shove that back in everyone's face and say, hey, look, I told you so, didn't I?
00:07:48
Speaker
He's a funny funny character, isn't he, Ange? Because you watch him sometimes at the end of games when Spurs have suffered a bad result and he can be quite touchy and sometimes sarcastic, maybe even come across as as rude at times to the reporter, whoever's interviewing, but then you watch him in press conferences. He has a laugh, he's quite a jovial character, but maybe that's just the stress of management that can get to you and it's a different kind of stress he's experienced in the season because when he's been at Celtic,
00:08:16
Speaker
He's been used to winning every week. He's been used to winning trophies. and Now he's come into a league where there's still an expectation. There's an onus on your team to win, but he's not having it all his own way. And as much as you try to block out the noise coming from the outside, it's probably hard to ignore

Young Talent Emergence at Spurs

00:08:31
Speaker
it, isn't it?
00:08:31
Speaker
you know I noticed he took umbrage when he was asked if the game in midweek was win or bust and that just illustrates how maybe the pressure has at times got to him. But I think for Spurs' sake, whether they win the Europa League or not and they look to make a change in the summer or they decide that Ange is their man, I think obviously it's not a straightforward decision, is It's not straightforward process and...
00:08:54
Speaker
What they need to think realistically is if we're going to relieve Ange, then we need to make sure that we bring in someone that's a guaranteed upgrade. Otherwise, it's probably just worthwhile keeping Ange in place, I feel, at least anyway. They're a side that we know have struggled in the league this season.
00:09:09
Speaker
And you can draw parallels between them and Manchester United and the fact that they're so far away from where they want to be. Although i would say it has been different in some ways. There have been times when I've watched Spurs and they've actually looked really good. I mean, the fact that it's only Liverpool scored more goals than them.
00:09:25
Speaker
And when you look at their goal difference, it's far superior to a lot of the teams in and then around them. Only the sides at the top of the league can better it. So they've got plus 14 goal difference, but then you see them sitting in the bottom half. So it shows on their day, they're still capable of stringing good performances together and beating teams comfortably.
00:09:41
Speaker
But the criticism has been there because of results and maybe Ange's naivety as well. Maybe his lack of flexibility, his willingness to change, willingness to adapt his style in certain games, it almost seems like he's sticking plan A regardless, isn't he? And if that doesn't work, then there's nowhere to go. but I feel the best managers, they always have to be adaptable in their approach. And sometimes you have to demand substance over style.
00:10:08
Speaker
Sometimes you're not going to be able to play that free-flowing football just because of the nature of football. And you can't expect perfection from a week-to-week basis. And sometimes you play in opposition that don't allow you to play in that style or you set up in that style. And they have the certain players they set up in a way that are good enough to exploit that. So you have to be able to change things up. And maybe that's been something...
00:10:28
Speaker
They haven't done at times this season, but on the other hand, you've got to admire it in some ways, as foolish as it can seem at times, to the fact that he believes in his players, he believes in his philosophies, he feels that it's about his team, it's about his ideas, and he's less worried about what the opposition do. But I feel you also have that balancing act to do as a manager, don't you? And maybe that's where he's ah fallen a little bit short this season.
00:10:54
Speaker
I also do have some sympathy as well in the fact that they have dealt with numerous injuries, And injuries to key players, we're not talking about squad players, people that make up the numbers. They've lost their two main centre arse for large chunk of the season. And I don't care what team you are, if that happens to you, it's going to have a serious impact. If you took Canate and Van Dijk out of the Liverpool side, it would make a great difference, wouldn't it?
00:11:17
Speaker
But just focusing on defence, obviously missing Van de Ven and Romero... for a significant period of time, it's going to affect you. And you feel sorry in some ways for someone like Archie Gray, who's come in there, young lad from Leeds, primarily a central midfielder, isn't he? But it's been a real baptism of fire because he's been here, there and everywhere, having to fill holes where he wouldn't have expected to play, playing at fullback sometimes and playing often in the heart of defence. So... It's been a challenge but you feel for him it's probably character building exercise if anything and he'll strengthen him in the long term and it it just shows how versatile a player he is and how valuable already at his young age he can be for a manager.
00:11:57
Speaker
known He can play in various roles. He can put his hand up in a crisis and say you know look at me ill I'll do a job here. and I think It's been ah season of discontent, but I think fans will be pleased with the efforts of probably some of their younger players.
00:12:11
Speaker
Talking of Archie Gray, it's been a ah breakthrough for Bergvall as well. and When Bergvall first signed, and I saw him in the first few games, I wasn't sure. The jury was out for me. thought maybe he's a bit too lightweight for the league.
00:12:22
Speaker
Is he going to be easily knocked off the ball? Is he just going to find it challenging, as sometimes it can be for for players coming from foreign leagues? It's a big... change going into an environment when the football is a bit different but as the seasons progress these look better and better and he looks like someone to keep an eye on for next season as he starts to fill out and gets more experience.
00:12:42
Speaker
It's also been a breakout campaign for Jed Spence and He's had an interesting journey in his time, hasn't he, ah at Spurs. Sometimes it's just a bit of luck, just a bit of timing. You also need someone to give you that backing.
00:12:54
Speaker
He signed several years ago in strange circumstances because, by all accounts, Antonio Conte didn't want him. It was a ah club signing. And then he shipped out on loan to France, to Leeds as well, to Italy...
00:13:10
Speaker
And he's probably had a lot of thinking time in and amongst it all, wondering if he's ever going to see the light at Spurs. As I said, sometimes you just need that bit of luck, don't you? A dog, he's gone down with an injury.
00:13:22
Speaker
He's had to fill in at left back. Not the position he'd want to be playing, not his strongest position.

Spurs' Business Focus and Europa League Aspirations

00:13:27
Speaker
You'd say he's a right back. remember him at Nottingham Forest, him and Brennan Johnson kind of dovetailing well, playing down that right-hand side.
00:13:33
Speaker
um So he's gone in at left back and he's kind of made it his own position. It's interesting now with Udagi back fit what they decide to do for the rest of the season what they decide to do next season whether Jed Spence has made such an impression that he is now the nailed on starter so we'll have to watch that one with a bit of intrigue but it just shows how players sometimes They just need an arm around their shoulders. They just need someone to show that belief and then they can play at that level. And with a string of games, he's shown how good a player he can be.
00:14:02
Speaker
So I think some of the youngsters have been a success at Spurs this season. Maybe some of the more senior players have not stepped up to the plate. what I have done in previous seasons, James Madison, you know, what super talent he is. And I always quite enjoy listening to Madison because he's he's very honest and he says how he feels, doesn't necessarily give the media trained answers. i think there's an interview recently that he acknowledged the criticism from outside and,
00:14:29
Speaker
That's only natural, isn't it? But he's he's a super talent, but it's it's been an up and down season for him, hasn't it? Son as well, great player. I mean, one of Spurs' greatest ever players, not just foreign players, but you wonder his father time catching up with him.
00:14:44
Speaker
I still feel he has something to offer, but maybe his best days are probably behind him rather than in front. But what I would say is I'm more optimistic looking at the Spurs set up and their group of players when everyone is fit. I'm more optimistic about them, at least in short term, than Manchester United, for instance.
00:15:02
Speaker
And whether it's Ange in charge going forward or whether it's someone else, I do feel there is enough... talent in that squad and with one or two additions maybe looking in the central midfield area I certainly feel that they can be challenging for those Champions League places next season via the league and having a much more successful league campaign than the one they're having currently As always with Spurs, there's talk about their ownership as well as in their protest recently against Daniel Levy. It's been a long time without a trophy that always comes up, doesn't it? Since 2008, wasn't it? Under Juan de Ramos, the League Cup. Maybe the fans feel that Levy should be prioritising performances on the pitch and he's not necessarily given his undivided attention on delivering that.
00:15:46
Speaker
They see him as more interested in the business side and fans aren't really interested in that, are they? About how good a businessman someone is they just want to see their owners giving their team that they follow up and down the country they want to see them giving their team the best possible chance of success and maybe they just feel that he hasn't given that so as far as the league goes certainly been below par they have had their moments but ultimately all's not lost and there is light at the end of the tunnel and they are still chasing that trophy and
00:16:19
Speaker
One that's eluded them since 2008 and you wouldn't put it past them, would you? But no one spurs as well. When they do get themselves in positions to have success, something seems to go wrong. So as much as they do have a good chance in Europa League, I wouldn't be putting any of my money on them to win it.
00:16:38
Speaker
So there we have it. That's just a look at Spurs and some of their trials and tribulations this season. Can they follow up their European exploits with a win on the weekend? In the final part, I'll look ahead to the game and ponder team changes and what we might see at Craven Cottage.

That result helping Fulham stay in the mix for Europe.
00:17:53
Speaker
And speaking of Europe, Spurs obviously coming into this game off the back of that Thursday outing in the Europa League. I'm sure Fulham selfishly would have been hoping for that game

Fulham's Tactical Strategies and Match Predictions

00:18:00
Speaker
to go... to extra time and penalties. But you just have to ask yourself, is it probably a good time to play Spurs with all of their eggs being in the Europa League basket, all of their focus and attention being on that competition?
00:18:11
Speaker
Maybe the league at this stage plays second fiddle because you have to be realistic and accept your place in the league. They're not going competing for Europe via the league. you know Can they get top half? Even that's a bit of a push at the minute, isn't it? So I think you've got to look to every advantage and the fact that Fulham have had longer time to recover and the fact that there's more on this game for Fulham, I think should hold them in good stead.
00:18:35
Speaker
What Ange does have in his favour though is he does have more of a squad now. He's been a large chunk of the season where he has missed a lot key individual players. And they do still have injuries to certain personnel.
00:18:46
Speaker
Danso, I know, is out injured. But I am slightly tempered by the fact that they do have Romero and Van der Ven both fit. And Kulisowski has been one of their better players this season, one of their more influential players. He's out as well with a long-term injury.
00:18:58
Speaker
But they have had players come back as well. and We saw in the last game in the league their bench was a lot stronger. So he does have the option to rotate if players may be feeling a bit leggy and tired from... the midweek outing. I think it's sometimes a bit of a cop-out, isn't it? When you play on the Sunday after the Europa League, people give you a ready-made excuse.
00:19:15
Speaker
I think mentally it can be challenging and possibly as much as anything because you're going from the high, the euphoria after winning a knockout game in Europe to then certainly a league game. Look, it's a London derby. You should be up for it regardless.
00:19:26
Speaker
But the fact that they know there's not a lot to play for, you do wonder if psychologically it affects you and you don't quite have that spring in your step for the game. So it probably is natural to see a bit of ah a come down after that. Fulham, they need to win this game to stay in touch with others.
00:19:41
Speaker
The defeat last week was desperately disappointing and you also had the double whammy because there's a direct rival that's taken three points off them. Brighton have been in such good form lately, winning a lot of games. But you know they're not going to continue winning every game from now until the end of the season.
00:19:56
Speaker
And that's the same for all of the clubs and around them. They will lose games. So what Fulham have to do is when they do lose games is make sure they take advantage of their slip-ups. Make sure they keep the gap close enough so when they do suffer defeats, Fulham can take advantage of that. Because you feel like another defeat on the weekend here would probably have...
00:20:17
Speaker
lasting consequences because the games are starting to run out after this weekend's game you're down to single figures games and then maybe the gap's two games worth so you might have to win two games just to get level on the points of the teams above you at that point it's a bit of a big gap especially with the way full of a maybe struggled to real wins together so i feel like it is a very important game for fulham to stay in the mix basically and it's important to just keep as many other teams involved as possible. We know that 8th could potentially get Europa Conference League for next season.
00:20:48
Speaker
So the more teams ahead of you that you can drag into it, keep in sight, then the better your chances are of possibly gate-crushing the European picture. I think they'll also want to replicate that performance against Nottingham Forest. They're not the one we saw after against Crystal Palace.
00:21:03
Speaker
Said it multiple times, the home form's concerning. a lot of the performances have been flat and you wonder why. It's difficult to get your head around, but if they can put in the level of performance they did against Nottingham Forest, show what they're all about, then there's every chance that they can come away with three points in this game.
00:21:17
Speaker
As for team news, we don't know about Adama Traore yet. I think he was a bit of a big miss against Brighton. Just have that outlet and you know what he can do. Running at defenders, no full backs would enjoy playing against him. So I think it would be massive to have him come back into the team.
00:21:32
Speaker
And I would like to see him go back to that four at the back. I just don't think the back five suits the personnel. I just don't think you get the best out of certain players. I think Anthony Robinson, for instance, he looks a lot more comfortable playing in that left-back role than he does playing in that left-wing-back role. We know Sasa Lukic is going to be out for this game.
00:21:49
Speaker
Obviously, that begs the question, how does it look in midfield? Because Emile Smith-Rowe, again, after last week, took a bit of criticism. performances have been inconsistent was very good against not in the forest and then not so good against crystal palace went off injured on that game so we're not seeing that consistent week in week out performance that you would like from a guy that was signed for 35 million so how does he look to play in midfield i mean if you wanted to go for a more like-for-like replacement for sasa lukic then you could go to harrison reed because then it doesn't really change things in terms of the system and you could still have that ah attack-minded player whether that's pereira or or emil smithrow i don't think he's going to do that i just don't think harrison reed is probably going to be starting games especially after that costly error against brighton so i can see him going with smithrow and pereira again which is taking the positive option i suppose
00:22:43
Speaker
I know a lot of people don't like that, but I feel it is a game Fulham have to win, so I wouldn't be against that. I'm not so concerned about what they do in the midfield. It's more about the system and formation they play, and I just think they look more comfortable playing the four at the back, so that's what I wouldn't see them revert to.
00:22:58
Speaker
dangers from the Spurs team that they have so many talented players who have maybe been a bit below par or have been out through injury and I think Dom Solanke it's good to have him back obviously a big money signing for them so it's difficult to kind of assess the season he's had because he has scored goals but then it's been curtailed by injury but he is someone that Fulham have to be watchful of because he had a good record of scoring against them when he was playing for Bournemouth they'll need to keep him quiet and then Who else plays? Because he does have other attacking options. He could look to rotate.
00:23:25
Speaker
Not quite sure how they look to line up. But what I would say is, regardless of the way Spurs line up, you expect this to be an open game. We know how Ange sets his team up. They play in one way, don't they? They try to win the game.
00:23:37

But they also let you play as well. So but there should be goals in it. I want to see that energy right from the first whistle. And Fulham can definitely get a result because I feel like it is set up for them to win this game almost with the week Spurs have had and the after effects of Europe and that mentally maybe mentally the challenges that come with that as well as ah physically.

So with that all being said, I am going to go for a Fulham win. I'm going to go for a 2-1 score line. As I said, I do think goals are guaranteed. Fulham, they're not good enough to keep the back door shut.

They don't keep many clean sheets and and we know Spurs, they score a lot of goals, don't they? So i can't see Spurs not scoring. But at the same time, Spurs, they have their fallibilities at the back, even if they do have their two best centre-halves playing. And we know Romero can be sometimes a bit of a liability. showed that in the game against Bournemouth as well. And he sometimes he does silly things, makes rash decisions. So I am going to go for a Fulham 2-1 win, which will get them back on track, get them back in the mix for Europe.
