Reminiscing 8th Grade Photos

00:00:00
Speaker
Hey everybody happy Thursday and welcome to another episode of predetermined a pro wrestling hangout I'm your host Garrett calendar and with me as always a man Who has uncovered some top-secret photos of us from the eighth grade? Derek helping
00:00:15
Speaker
Those are available today on our social media if you want to see us as chunky prepubescent kids, or I guess technically right in the middle of puberty. Right? I don't know. When does puberty start? I'm 31, I don't know. I feel like I should remember when pubes came.
00:00:34
Speaker
Like when that started being a thing. Did it just happen overnight? This is a weird way to start, but I'm digging it so far. Yeah, you know, gotta gotta talk about those pubes. Gotta work that into the podcast and hopefully not scare anybody away. But yeah, today, check out our social media if you want to see us as younglings in Washington, DC, back in the year 2000. We're doing some wrestling stuff, so.
00:00:57
Speaker
Check it out. I mean, back then, I'm pretty sure it would have been a source of shame. But we'll talk more about that in a second. Hit our goddamn music.

Excitement Over New Venom Trailer

00:01:40
Speaker
Hey man, did you see the new Venom trailer? I did not see the new Venom trailer, should I have? You should have, I'm excited as hell about it. Venom's my favorite Marvel character, and I'm liking what I'm seeing so far. I mean, I saw clips of the symbiote. Somebody at work today told me that the miraculous thing is that you can actually understand Tom Hardy a little better as Venom than you can as just himself.
00:02:09
Speaker
Hey, I know that there's, I think at one time you told me you're kind of over the whole superhero movie thing. It's not a thing you necessarily get excited about, but I, and I, and I get it's another, it's an era where everyone is skeptical and down on everything these days. And I happen to be looking forward to this and I don't want anybody to shit on that. I think it looks good. I'm excited about it. October 5th. That's the next superhero movie I care about.
00:02:34
Speaker
Oh, you realize you just put on the internet that you don't want people to shit on it. And that is going to unleash a floodgate, my friend. I think I'm prepared for it.

8th Grade Memories: Parties and Wrestling

00:02:44
Speaker
Bring it on. Whatever. Well, we were just talking about those pictures that you found there. It's like between seventh and eighth grade or seventh grade somewhere in there. It was May of 2000, which is our seventh grade, end of our seventh grade year. This came at a perfect time because I went to see the movie Eighth Grade over the weekend.
00:03:03
Speaker
Yeah. And that just brought back so much anxiety of just awkward things that happened in the eighth grade. Is that the way you felt about that age? I didn't. I don't know. I wasn't that lost

Awkward 8th Grade Trip Tales

00:03:15
Speaker
at that age. I don't think I think I struggled with mathematics and school. And that was about it. You never had any. You never had a social problem.
00:03:23
Speaker
I didn't feel like it. Man, I like that just brought me back to like, you know, going to party like a party that, you know, you didn't necessarily belong at where you realize like, oh, my God, I know one person here and the rest of these people are they're too cool for me. I don't think they're going to like my batch at the beach shirt.
00:03:40
Speaker
in seventh and eighth grade? I mean, these were prime wrestling years for us. This was right in the middle of the Monday night war, kind of winding down. Oh, this was definitely at a time when I had a stone cold Steve Austin poster on my wall that I won at the state fair and didn't notice for months that Austin was spelled incorrectly.
00:03:59
Speaker
Was it? How was it spelled? I think it left out a letter. I think that was their way of bootleg. Was it A-U-S-T-N? Did they just leave out the I? Yeah, maybe they left out the I. Like, that would be the letter easiest to leave out there. Right.
00:04:14
Speaker
But yeah, no, I definitely remember showing up to a party that I definitely wasn't cool enough to be at with my Carl Malone and DDP versus Hulk Hogan and Dennis Rodman shirt. I feel like no one else appreciated that that shirt was the shit. I would wear that now if I had it.
00:04:33
Speaker
You know, I think about that shirt often and I wish you still had that somewhere buried in your closet back home in Pittsfield, Illinois. But do you remember the shitty little carnivals our small farming community would put on from time to time and how they had the game where they would put all the balloons on the corkboard inside of a trailer and you would throw a dart?
00:04:55
Speaker
And if you popped a balloon with the dirt, you got to have one of those crappy four-inch by four-inch pictures in the paper frame that they would let you take home. Oh, man. It was definitely... You would always get it by somebody who had definitely been smoking meth. Oh, yeah. And the way they made these pictures is it was like... So you know it's authentic. Oh, yeah. You could still smell it on it.
00:05:16
Speaker
It was a piece of linoleum that they had printed out a little square picture and then just put a little tiny piece of plexiglass and you felt like you had really accomplished something but really all you did was fuel a drug habit. Well I got an NWO Wolfpack one of those and I was very proud of it.
00:05:35
Speaker
Now that you bring up the Austin poster, you win wrestling things at carnivals and state fairs back in the late 90s and early 2000s. Can you still do that? I don't know. I'm sure you can win a John Cena poster at the state fair, but I haven't been in a while. Well, when I won that poster at the state fair, I was proving something because as I walked by, a man said, hey, pork chop, get over here. That is not a nice thing to call a fat eighth grader.
00:06:01
Speaker
Is that how you read into it? Like he was saying you were fat? I don't think pork chop's a nice thing to say to somebody. Maybe he thought you looked like Doug's dog. See, I feel like, oh, nah, he had more... Doug's dog definitely had more charisma than I did in the eighth grade. Is that true?
00:06:21
Speaker
That's that's embarrassing shit. Hey, I guess no I sorry just one more thing like as I'm thinking of this and like things that probably things as you want man things that like affected me deeper than Anyone probably thought they would did you see sorry that we haven't talked about wrestling yet? That's coming. I swear to God
00:06:39
Speaker
We're still technically talking about wrestling. We're talking about wrestling posters and pictures. This next thing just has to do with the eighth grade. That's it. Okay. Nothing about wrestling. I didn't realize you were so traumatized by your eighth grade. Well, did you see in the news where in Branson that the duck boat sank? Yes. That was a significant thing for me as well.
00:07:03
Speaker
Well, in the eighth grade, I went on a trip to Branson and I rode those ducks. And the man who was driving the duck looked like Captain Ron, you know, Kurt Russell in the movie Captain Ron. And at a certain point, he said, now it's time for the kids to drive the duck.
00:07:20
Speaker
And he was looking in the rearview mirror at me, and I never got up to drive the duck. And as we were all leaving, I was the last to leave the boat. No one got to hear this but me. Captain Ron stopped me. Apart from everybody else looked at me and said, hey man, just know you're not too cool to drive the duck. And that fucked me up. Wasn't that a compliment?
00:07:44
Speaker
I think he was saying, like, you think you're too cool to drive the duck, but you're not. You should have driven the duck. Oh, well, in that case, yeah. Fuck you. You should have been willing to drive the duck. Well, now that I see what could happen with the duck, I think it's good that we didn't.
00:07:59
Speaker
Why? Why? Okay. So first of all, it's a tragedy. And I have a story in relation to this. It's not nearly as cool as yours. Shout out to that. Shout out to that duck driver. I think he was spot on. You aren't too cool to drive the fucking duck. I was in eighth grade.
00:08:16
Speaker
Well, I didn't want to try. I can't wait for people to see these pictures. You can't force me to drive a boat. It's not just a boat, Garrett. It's a boat that's also a car that's also a boat. It's also a duck. I was probably sitting in the back with a Diamond Dallas page shirt on, you know, just throwing diamond cutters. I don't know. I was cool. Was your dad proud to have you around? He wasn't there. I was with Adam Neff's family. Oh.
00:08:42
Speaker
Hey Adam Neff, I don't think you listen to the podcast, but we're name dropping you anyway. I got to go down to the Ozarks and wait, not the Ozarks, Branson, Missouri. Sorry. Another part of Missouri. I almost rode the ducks in 2006. It was all I wanted to do while we were down there. We didn't do it. We got drunk. We had some cigars. I had a Mike's hard lemonade. Yeah, that sounds like maybe you were too cool to drive the duck.
00:09:12
Speaker
What do you mean? I wanted to. I wanted to ride the duck. Well it sounds like you were smoking cigars, drinking Mike's hards. It sounds like you might have overtaken the duck. I had two friends there with me. This was a really random trip in like May of 2006 or May or June of 2006, man. I wanted to ride the duck. Had I been given the opportunity to ride the duck, I would have also driven the duck had it been offered.
00:09:37
Speaker
You didn't drive the duck, but you know what you are going to do?

Debate Over All In Event's Card

00:09:40
Speaker
Go to All In, which is... That's my segue. Yeah, no, we're a month away. The king of transitions. The king of the transitional phase. Hey, we are a month away. As of the day that we're recording this, it is August 1st, 2018. We are a month away from All In here in beautiful Chicago. Technically, it's in Hoffman Estates. We're going to call it Chicago again.
00:10:02
Speaker
I'm excited. I expressed to you the other day through a text message some... There's some confusion. There's some hesitation that I'm feeling towards this card that's being put together. I'm sure there's people who hear this right now and they're going, oh, fuck you, Derek. It looks great. I'm not saying it's going to be bad. I'm just confused by some of the booking decisions that Cody and the Bucks are making, because there's a lot of potential
00:10:26
Speaker
Must see like I guess in my mind this is indie WrestleMania and I feel like they're just kind of throwing some matches together for fun Am I wrong in thinking that I actually do disagree with you a little bit. All right, and I'm ready to I'm ready to talk about this. Let's go What so far what's a thing that's been released that you're like? This isn't what I want
00:10:49
Speaker
True or false, the young Bucks are like the most popular, hottest tag team in the world of pro wrestling today. I would say correct. Unless we're talking about the Bludgeon Brothers got those belts, man. So you tell me who's doing it right. Bucks versus Bludgeon's give it to me now. Luke Harper's in the movie Mohawk. It's on Netflix now. It's a horror movie. You know what's the money? Nothing.
00:11:16
Speaker
that Bucks have a weekly YouTube episodic series. Luke Harper could have that if he wants. He chooses to, he is meant for the big screen though. You know what's funny though, they actually probably could have a decent little match. Those two teams. They could have a great match with anybody. And the thing is, Luke Harper, I saw you asked today on our social media, you asked who everyone thinks is the most underrated wrestler in the WWE. Or did you say underutilized or how'd you word it?
00:11:43
Speaker
I said, who's the most underrated talent on the WWE roster? A male example and a female example. Now, I put that up on our social media. If you're gonna answer it here on the podcast but not on social media, now we've got the basis for a feud here. Am I not supposed to talk about the things you do on social media? You can talk about them, but if you're gonna give me an answer, you could have written out a tweet. You could have said something on our social media. I was just saying somebody said Luke Harper and I tend to agree, Jesus Christ.
00:12:11
Speaker
Get back to bitching about all in, you fucking piece of shit. Just go back to trying to remember when you got your pubes, buddy. I'll be thinking about that long after this podcast is over.
00:12:32
Speaker
Oh man, as far as bitching about all in. No, I think I agree with you in the sense, I think all of these matches they're putting together, and I guess this is what some people, this is all they would ask for, they all have the potential to be great matches, which I don't disagree with. I think from a spectacle standpoint,
00:12:52
Speaker
There's like I was kind of looking forward to seeing Joey Ryan versus hangman and that's not happening I don't really have like a lot of excitement for Joey Janela versus hangman page might be a good match. We'll see I think the young bucks are the hottest tag team in the world of pro wrestling and you're
00:13:09
Speaker
If this was WWE and this match was being booked this way, it would get ripped to shreds. The Bucks are being put in a cluster tag match, and they are the premier tag team in wrestling. Why are they in a six-man tag? Get them a team to face, two on two. That's what I want. I'm bitchin', wrestling. So, I will say this. I think the Bucks work very, very well with luchadores.
00:13:33
Speaker
And the match they're in, it is the Bucks and Kota Bushi, which, you know, they're part of the Golden Elite. We haven't even seen Kota team with the Bucks yet. Another point I would like to make. So I think that's kind of cool that we're going to get to see them together. And also, I think a lot of the best matches I've seen the Bucks have, they work so well. I think I already just said this with luchadors, but I'm not paying attention to what I'm saying.
00:13:57
Speaker
You're so worked up. I've got you so pissed off because I'm taking shots at all in. So you have Ray Mysterio, Ray Phoenix, who Ray Phoenix is so much goddamn fun to watch. Like I've seen the Bucks take on Phoenix and Pentagon. Phoenix and Pentagon are brothers. So is that like maybe that's something you'd be more looking forward to like two brothers versus two brothers? Yes. But that match has happened before.
00:14:24
Speaker
I don't care, I don't know. I've also seen, like one of the best matches I've ever seen was a six man tag with the young bucks in it. So I think they just work so, they're gonna work so well together. I think they're gonna put on a match that's going to surprise you.
00:14:39
Speaker
It may be a great match. I said this in the opening of my rant. These may be great matches and I guess maybe at the end of the day, that is all that matters. I like the spectacle of seeing just the tag team as they are taking on another great tag team. Do you think part of the problem for you is that these are just matches getting announced more than you're not getting a story for it?
00:15:03
Speaker
Maybe, but let me take another shot that's gonna piss you off. It's gonna piss a lot of people off. I'm gonna be the heel today. That's fine. I am so, you're like, one, I just don't think Kenny Omega's that great. No, that's what I was gonna say. You're like, I think Cody Rhodes is failing on everything he's done. Cody Rhodes is doing great. And then you're just gonna be like, I got a Roman Reigns tattoo. Yes, on my chest. I've got his chest protector logo on my own chest. With the American flag behind him.
00:15:33
Speaker
Yeah, I got that Undertaker shirt where he's got the American flag inside of his trench coat. That's on my back. No. Can I say something? I mean this and I want to get feedback from our listeners and they're going to be pissed. The Golden Elite were made irrelevant the second Cody Rhodes turned face.
00:15:57
Speaker
The whole assembling of that faction was a big deal because it seemed to be the Bucks finally breaking away from Cody and Marty and Hangman and there was gonna be a civil war within Bullet Club except now the civil war has broken out in a different area and a bushy in the Bucks isn't a thing. Like it never really became a thing. How the fuck did we wind up here?
00:16:20
Speaker
So I think what you're doing right now is saying like, everybody bitches about WWE, nobody bitches about New Japan, and I'm gonna knock them down a goddamn peg, you fucking marks. Is that what you're saying? I'm just saying, let's be fair.
00:16:37
Speaker
I think the show is going to be great regardless if you just show up and go, oh, I'm basically going to Cody Rhodes' house show. That's what it is. There's some great freaking performers being put together in matches. I just would have, I guess the match right now that I'm looking forward to most on the all-in card, I'm looking forward to Okada versus Marty Skrull.
00:16:57
Speaker
and see I think there's some people that would look at that is I think everybody was shocked with the announcement of that match but I think the way you got to look at it is this hasn't happened yet these two are likely to never meet up in New Japan just because one's a junior heavyweight one is you know I mean the greatest heavyweight champion in their history or I mean at least the long I don't would you say the longest equals the greatest or is that just
00:17:23
Speaker
No. I mean, one of the greatest unquestionably. Yeah, he's easily one of the greatest who's going through the wrestling equivalent of a midlife crisis right now.
00:17:36
Speaker
I get it, I get it. It's not cool to criticize New Japan, but I guess this isn't technically New Japan. And I'm not really criticizing this so much as I'm just offering up an alternate way of looking at this show. I would like to see big spectacle matches. Like the Aldous vs Cody Rhodes fight, I get.
00:17:57
Speaker
It's the NWA World Heavyweight Championship. That's a big freaking deal. I don't think a ton of people outside of the indie wrestling world even know who Nick Aldis is. Am I wrong in saying that? No, I don't think that's incorrect. So really what it is is it's Cody Rose going for the title. And that's a great story. That's a great selling point.
00:18:20
Speaker
Well, I think you got to look at it like this, too, though. With a lot of these indie shows, when you're going, all you're going with is knowing that it's matches. I mean, nine times out of 10, like when you go to like a PWG show or something, you're just getting a card and you're like, oh, shit, this is going to be cool match ups. And that is kind of what they're doing.

Analyzing All In Matches: Predictions and Potential

00:18:39
Speaker
There's just there's not a lot of room to build stories. But I assume that this month we're probably going to get a couple stories built a little bit on being the elite, right? Or I would hope so.
00:18:50
Speaker
Right. And no, you're absolutely right. I mean, mystery cards are a fine thing and you show up and you just enjoy the card they give you and I'm, you know what, I'll, I'll, I'll grant you all of that. I, I, maybe I just wanted to, like, like I said, it's indie WrestleMania to me. There may only be one all in. Cody said it himself. This may only happen one time.
00:19:12
Speaker
I cement something with this show that lasts forever. And maybe they're just having fun. Maybe they're just happy about the opportunity. Who am I to criticize? I've never run a promotion. I've never put on a wrestling show. Well, have you been watching Cody's YouTube show? Only I've seen bits and pieces of it. I've been I haven't even seen the newest being the elite.
00:19:34
Speaker
Well, on the newest episode of Cody, I don't know what it's called. I think it's just like all in or something about all in. But either way, on that one, he never called this indie WrestleMania. They definitely stayed away from WWE things. He referred to it as wrestling Woodstock.
00:19:52
Speaker
No, I did hear that. Yes. And also he talked about on it how when you get wrestlers booking the show themselves, he didn't want to run into situations like you've seen in the past where they're booking themselves in the biggest matches. So he actually said that the Bucks and Cody booked themselves last.
00:20:15
Speaker
Okay, well no, and here's the thing, that's an awesome perspective and to keep yourself humble. I think it's a nice gesture. At the same time, those guys are gonna be over as hell. Some self-awareness, it's okay. They are gonna be the most over people in that building.
00:20:33
Speaker
And I don't know, like I said, I'm not over here angry and not looking forward to the show, but maybe some mild criticism in the sense of here's how I probably would have done things differently. I do it to WWE all the live long day, so I think it's only fair that I throw this out once.
00:20:53
Speaker
We still don't know who Kenny Omega's facing. And I don't know, I was looking at it, and I want something big there, and I don't know if we've ever seen a singles match between Kenny and Pentagon. And I think that could be pretty cool. Is that where you think they're going with this? I mean, honestly, the way they're booking, we kind of thought, okay, we're gonna get Hangman Joey Ryan. And when that didn't happen, to me, anything's possible now.
00:21:20
Speaker
Yeah, how did you feel about that? Well, obviously, you know, they've been building this Joey Ryan thing for so long that I'm not convinced that something isn't still going to happen there. Right. I mean, it easily could. But when I heard Cody describe why he paired Hangman with
00:21:41
Speaker
Joey Janela. Joey Janela. God damn, that was a long pause because I had to think of his name. Sorry, hit a pothole. So with that, he described it as, he kind of, he really put over Hangman by saying him being one of the best in the world right now and that he could easily see him being a champion in any company in a few years. Totally agree with that. I mean, Hangman, you heard how I talked about him between episode one and now. I'm on the Adam Page train. I'm shining that guy's bloodied boots.
00:22:12
Speaker
And he said that he thought it would be really interesting to pair him with somebody like Joey Janela, who's just so unpredictable.
00:22:22
Speaker
And then that got me thinking about the Hangman, Kota, Bushe match from Supercard this year. That surprised you? That surprised everybody. And there's just so much crazy shit where Hangman's doing all this stuff like giving Germans off of the guardrail. And when I start thinking about the shit that Joey Janelle is willing to do to his body, it's like those two are gonna come up with something. We don't know what it is, but you know that's gonna be kind of fucking crazy.
00:22:49
Speaker
I think it's gonna be a fun show. I mean, you're not gonna get me to back off of that idea. I think it started with them not cashing in on the Joey Ryan hangman page stuff that they've been working with for months. And then, like you said, once that was off the table, it was like, okay, well, I guess anything's in play. And like we said, we don't know who Kenny Omega's facing. What's Stephen Amell doing? He's supposed to be there. Yeah, I assume he's gonna wrestle.
00:23:18
Speaker
Right. I don't know. Maybe he wrestles Joey because didn't hang me and try and pen it on Stephen Amell. Maybe that's where they go with it. Arrow versus versus the ghost of Joey Ryan. Arrow versus arrow technically.
00:23:34
Speaker
His dick being his penis. Yeah. Yeah, I get it. I get it. Before we forget, we need to plug this right in the middle of the show. We've been meaning we meant to do it last week. We didn't do it this weekend. Nashville Southern Underground Pro. Garrett, we're we're we're sponsoring the show.
00:23:55
Speaker
We are sponsors of a pro wrestling show. A pretty damn good pro wrestling show, too. Yeah? Are you going? Yeah, I'll be there. I will be in attendance. So come say hi if you see me. There's some pretty cool shit going on with this. We have AJ Gray versus Kurt Stallion in an I Quit match. I believe a couple shows ago, if it wasn't the last one, there were some German suplexes onto a stage. No, it was a pile driver. Either way, they're going to do some fucked up stuff. And I could see Baseman East being like, you can't come back.
00:24:26
Speaker
Because you specifically? Not me, them. Oh, well you too, right? Why would they not allow me? What'd I do? I don't know what you do in there. I don't know how wild you get. Well, last time I yelled at Kurt Stallion and he got in my face and I cried. So I hope AJ Grey kicks his ass. I was sad that MJF got hurt. We were supposed to sponsor MJF's match at the show. And then that ended up not happening. So as of now, does that mean we're not sponsoring a match? It kind of feels that way.
00:24:54
Speaker
Yeah, I don't know. I don't know how that works. You'll be there. Ask them. Confront them. I'll be like, hey, I'm sponsoring something. I'm here to sponsor something. No, there's a couple of fun ones, though, on this. I know they got I think the guy that MJF was facing, they moved him to a multi man match. But we have we have another alley cat match excited about that. And I looked, it looks like alley cats coming to AAW.
00:25:18
Speaker
Nice. Yeah, I did. I did see that. I believe she was against Scarlett Bordeaux. I think so. Yeah. And so that should be pretty cool. So if anybody listening to this hasn't seen Ali Cat yet, go check her out at AAW. Then, you know, give her some support. Give her some love.
00:25:35
Speaker
Yeah, this is gonna be a fun one, but yeah, we'll be there. We're sponsoring it. Get tickets. It is Sunday, August 5th. Doors are at 130, shows at two, 15 bucks to get in. You can't beat that. Your favorite wrestling podcast, which is us, is sponsoring a wrestling show. Our font, our logo is on a poster. We've made it, everyone. We don't have to worry about money anymore.
00:26:01
Speaker
We're big time. We're almost done with this podcast. We're never doing it again because we've peaked. There's nothing else we can do. There's nothing else. This is it. This is the end. And they're like, how did the show start? They talked about when they got their pubes. How did it end? They quit. That makes sense. That's usually you're either getting fired or quitting not too long after that. Any other job.
00:26:26
Speaker
God, I watched some wrestling today for this podcast. What did you watch today? I did watch a really kick-ass match from the G1 between Zack Sabre Jr. and Kenny Omega. Holy shit, man. Every time I watch Zack Sabre Jr.,
00:26:47
Speaker
It's like I forget and then I get reminded, oh yeah, he can take any person and turn them into a pretzel on command out of nowhere. And it doesn't matter if it's in the ring. It doesn't matter if it's on the ramp. It could be on the outside. It doesn't matter the size of the person. He looks like he's like 13. How old is this guy? I mean, how old is Gumby? It's hard to say. He's just wrestling Gumby to me. He will walk through a wall if you want him to.
00:27:17
Speaker
That's mean. That's from the theme song to Gumby. Our listeners understood that reference. You guys are smart. My co-host is not. Hey, they're frosting. Hey, we're Clay. That's a Frost and Cheerios commercial and that's as far as my Gumby references go. Sorry, I was kidding. I was working you.
00:27:39
Speaker
Well, now I'm embarrassed. Now I'm back in the goddamn eighth grade at that party. Kenny Omega! Zack Sabre Jr. Your thoughts. So, okay, it is one of those things where when you see that matchup, you're like, well, Kenny's gonna kick his ass. And then when you fall back into that, like you haven't seen a ton of Zack Sabre Jr. matches, but the second Kenny goes for a punch and you realize, holy shit, he is in an armbar now. Or like every time he goes for a V trigger, he's now in a leg lock.
00:28:09
Speaker
most painful leg lock and half boston crabs you'll ever see coming from zach saber jr just this lanky bastard the torque yeah i here's the thing and i in the the match was obviously fantastic like obviously a lot of hard hitting stuff and then switching like you're right the spot where kenny's going to pull the trigger on him and zach saber jr immediately slaps on the arm bar out of nowhere i
00:28:35
Speaker
Okay, I actually, I watched this today at lunch while I was at work and my computer doesn't have sound, so I was watching it with no sound and I just, I popped. I popped so loud when he pointed the handgun at Zack Sabre Jr. and was like, don't point things at him, he's gonna get it. If you could get it within arm's reach of him,
00:28:53
Speaker
He's gonna have you twisted into some shit. Were you rooting for him to win a little bit? A little bit. I mean, I know Kenny's undefeated right now, and that's really cool. But if Zack were the one to take that away from him, that's also pretty cool. But I also don't see Zack Sabre Jr. headline in Wrestle Kingdom. So one of the things that's really cool about this, and this is Pro Wrestling 101, if you do it right, you got Kenny in this tournament.
00:29:18
Speaker
and you've got the IWGP championship around his waist. He's the man over there right now. He's the top, he's the big dog. Kenny Omega is the top of the food chain over there in New Japan. Every time he has one of these matches in the G1 with guys, he's elevating the fuck out of them.
00:29:38
Speaker
Like, even when they don't beat him, you get the sense that they could have at any second. And that's how you elevate talent, is you let the audience believe, like, they're on my level. And the whole show is better because of that. He did that with Naito, and he did that with Zack Sabre Jr. I mean, honestly, I feel like he's able to do that with everybody. Nobody in that company sells a finisher like Kenny Omega.
00:30:08
Speaker
I mean, I never thought the crossroads was a devastating looking finisher until Kenny Omega took it. Same with like. Is it the hair? You think the hair helps? I don't know. He just flops around so good when he hits. Ramen, ramen noodles. I am fine with his hair. What I have an issue with with Kenny right now is his attitude.
00:30:29
Speaker
You don't like his attitude. Well, I'm not saying he's got a bad attitude, but I'm saying since he's become champ Motherfucker's got some heelish tendencies
00:30:39
Speaker
Do you think he's a little arrogant? I think he's gotten a little arrogant, but if you throw him into just, if you've, okay, so you have the G1 matches that are part of the tournament, but so you have the A block and the B block, and typically a show, if it's the B block doing their tournament matches, the A block will open the show with some multi-man matches, just so the crowd gets to see everybody still. And when the A block's having theirs and Kenny is in the multi-man matches, I feel like he's really, he's fun.
00:31:07
Speaker
You know, he's a he's a comedy wrestler, so he doesn't have to kill himself in these multi man matches. He saves it for the one on ones. But I find when he gets in the one on ones, he's just so goddamn cocky. I kind of like it, though. I mean, he's acting like a champion, right? You're not supposed to be shy. I guess he's the guy. I mean, he's not wrong, though. So can I really be mad at a guy for being like, oh, I am this good?
00:31:31
Speaker
Roman acts that way, how do you feel about it? The difference is he's like, I lost 16 times and I'm getting title shots. Who gives a shit? Like if you're just being given title shots all day long, I guess at a certain point you are the man. Because if you're just consistently second best, you're the man. He's like, I'm in the main event. I'm the man. I get main event money. Fuck it.
00:32:00
Speaker
Roman Reigns gonna lose to Kenny Omega, still be the man. That's what we learned from this. Oh, he would kill Kenny Omega. And you know what? The Superman punch would never look more devastating. Kenny would find a way to remove his own head from his body, let it fly across the ring. The spear, he's just gonna come in half. He's just gonna separate? He's just gonna completely separate. And like, man, that is some good selling. I guess Roman is awesome.
00:32:27
Speaker
He's going to look like the remains of the Black Dahlia by the time Roman Reigns is done with him. Look, mom, doll parts. Oh, is that a deep dark place? Is that a deep hole? Are people going to know that a child said that Elizabeth short when they found the Black Dahlia? That's I don't know, man. Is the Black Dahlia story mainstream now? Does everyone know that it had a movie? It's almost 100 years old, right?
00:32:53
Speaker
No, is it? I mean, the actual murder, right? Took place in like the what, the 30s? Hey, it's not pro wrestling, I'm not gonna remember the date. It's relevant to what we're talking about, Garrett. We're saying that Roman Reigns is gonna massacre Kenny Omega when they face each other one on one to where he looks like the Black Dahlia. If you Google image that, just be prepared for some disturbing shit. At that point, do you think, I mean, if that match ever happens, Kenny Omega's gonna be like 45 years old.
00:33:22
Speaker
Isn't he in his late 30s now? Is he? God damn, you're asking me a lot of number questions today. On an episode where I said, I was bad at mathematics. You said you were bad at mathematics. We talked about pubes. We talked about Gumby. And now you're just like, what's the age? What's the date? And I'm like, sit down, Mr. Boren. I don't need to remember this.
00:33:43
Speaker
Are you enjoying the G1 so far? I think everything's been great with it. I mean, they're doing such a good job of progressing all these stories in just matches. And I am enjoying the hell out of Tomatanga right now.
00:33:56
Speaker
Oh, yeah. Oh, fire. We haven't had time to talk about his Twitter feud with Reigns.

Kenny Omega vs. Zack Sabre Jr. Match Review

00:34:01
Speaker
Holy shit. Jesus. Like, I think last week we talked about him having a Twitter feud with a Marine and now he's just shit talking Roman Reigns. He's getting disqualified from every fucking G1 match.
00:34:14
Speaker
I didn't give any fucks. He just had a match with Zack Sabre Jr. as well. Zack, it was a situation where the ref got knocked out and Zack had him in a submission hold. Tomatanga tapped.
00:34:28
Speaker
to Zack Sabre Jr. That makes Zack look like a badass. But then the ref was knocked out, so Zack's trying to wake the ref up and then obviously all of the firing squad comes in and beats the shit out of him and they get disqualified, so two points for Zack. Well, thank God Todd Sinclair was not there. Todd could change the rules on a dime. Fuck Todd. He'll be at Starcast, though. We should interview him. We should interview him.
00:34:56
Speaker
Todd would be a great addition to this show. Oh, boy. Yeah, I would. I'd be into that. Todd and Macaulay Culkin, join us on the sofa, please. Todd, Macaulay Culkin, maybe Excalibur from PWG. I don't know. Just that would be a good mix. David Arquette. Come on. Yeah. Come on down. Keep them. Keep them coming.
00:35:17
Speaker
Which, uh, we did find out that Starcast Weekend, it sounds like you're gonna have to walk right by us. You're gonna be forced to look us in the eyes. And know... When you walk by, you make direct eye contact with me. It's gonna be just fine. Technically, only one person had to be your best friend, and that's the person that won the tickets. Hi, Jace. Hey, Jace, I promise I'll get you that hat.
00:35:41
Speaker
That hat will be given to you. I swear. I said I'd mail it to you. I don't have a box. I'm a little lazy. That's why you don't have it yet. All ends a month away. Please tell me the guy has the tickets at least. I got him the tickets. I didn't want him to worry about not having tickets. He just doesn't have a hat.
00:35:58
Speaker
Well, maybe he wanted the hat more. Yeah, the sun could be in his eyes. I don't know what he's doing. He's going to have a good time. What else was I watching on the G1? I watched a couple matches today. Ibushi had a couple hard hitting ones right in a row. He had Goto and he had Ishii in a row. Those were his two matches within a few days of each other. And you just have to imagine he got the absolute piss kicked out of him and both of them. But he did. He won both matches.
00:36:29
Speaker
Let me ask a question. Are you a big Ibushi Mark? I like how Hardy hits. There's something visually about him that isn't very intimidating.
00:36:39
Speaker
He looks soft. Is that weird of me to say? I don't mean air cut. I don't mean SAWFT soft. I just think he looks nice. He looks like a pleasant person. Well he's such a hard striker though. You know he can kick. He can just kick your damn head off. And in this match against Ishii
00:37:01
Speaker
I thought he was getting a little cocky. He was taking a note out of his lover's book, and he was being a little cocky. Ishii was on the ground. He was kicking the shit out of his head while he was down. Red Shoes is saying, knock that off. He says, no, thank you. Keeps kicking him in the head. That's because he looks so nice. He knows he can get away with it. But then when he stands up, him and Ishii have a throat chopping competition.
00:37:26
Speaker
Yes, and they are just going back and forth knocking the wind out of each other just slapping in the throat Punches in the throat slaps in the head this was I think that's why I like watching these guys I like watching just I really enjoy the hard-hitting stuff
00:37:40
Speaker
That's what we should have done for the all-in ticket giveaway, is have a throat chopping competition. Like we should have narrowed it down to two people, and then just who can take it the longest? There should have been a bracket. There should have been a tournament. I promise you, if I didn't get to do the chop first, I'm out.
00:37:59
Speaker
It's like a Roshambo situation for sure like first person always wins Absolutely. There's I can't think of a single wrestler. I would be willing to check take a chop in the throat from Maybe Enzo. Oh my god. I can't the other day is a joke. I put his song on in the car and I didn't tell my wife who it was and partway through she's like Who the fuck is this and what the fuck are they saying? I
00:38:37
Speaker
I broke you. God damn. That should have been a drop in the song. That's good stuff. Oh, just speaking of music, I went to see Pixies over the weekend. I've seen Pixies like four or five times. They're terrible.
00:38:56
Speaker
If for a band I love, they truly hate what they're doing. Did they play Where Is My Mind for you? They did, and I'll tell you, anytime they've got to play one of the hits, they go out of their way to make it not sound that good.
00:39:09
Speaker
So it was the lesson to be learned there like our other stuff? I guess. I don't know. They made it perfectly clear that they are doing this for the money. They don't enjoy it anymore. They don't like playing these songs. But I still keep going to see them thinking that maybe this time they'll enjoy it. And so they're like Randy Orton. Oh, no. When we walked away, my wife goes, I'm pretty sure the Pixies are the music equivalent of Brock Lesnar.
00:39:35
Speaker
Yeah. I don't watch the show, Paul. Why would I watch the show? We didn't talk about this last week because we recorded before SmackDown aired. Randy Orton pretty much looked us right in the eyes and addressed us personally that he's going to fuck our day.
00:39:55
Speaker
Yeah, I keep waiting on it. I feel like he's just like, Hey, Garrett, everybody you've ever loved, fuck them. I'm going to fuck them. It's going to start with Jeff Hardy, which I don't know how you personally feel about Jeff Hardy. I'm like, Hey, I'm fine with Jeff. This isn't going to hurt my feelings. He's like, Oh, just wait till I get ricochet.
00:40:15
Speaker
Wait till I get Adam Cole. I actually like this heel version of Randy Orton that's like, I didn't come up in the Indies and I don't give a shit. I'm going to kill all your indie guys. I think that if you're in WWE and you're a top star there, like if you're Cena or you're Orton, you kind of just have to own like that. People are going to hate you for not coming from the Indies, even though they technically came from OVW. They worked smaller shows before WWE.
00:40:40
Speaker
I don't know, do you think, where do you stand on that? Do you look at a guy as being more if he came from the NDs or? I don't know, I don't necessarily look at somebody as being a lesser talent if just because they started in WWE, it all comes from the workload and just how much I enjoy them.
00:40:59
Speaker
That's not how I feel. I don't think that's how you, you necessarily feel, but I do think that is a perception. I think there's, there's that, that smarky perception that you're not a real wrestler unless you wrestled an armory in front of 15 people that you didn't pay your, you didn't properly pay your dues unless you got like three bucks for your match and a pad on the back.
00:41:21
Speaker
Well, I also see that too. I mean, that would kind of be like if you were a stand-up comedian and you didn't have to do open mics first. It would be like if you're just like, hey, it turns out I'm really good and I'm doing Carnegie Hall. But I guess the thing is, if you're talented enough to thrive on the biggest stage, you're talented enough to do it. Like, you don't owe anybody an explanation. Case in point, Velveteen Dream is a homegrown talent. Over as fuck.
00:41:46
Speaker
If I recall though, I believe on Tough Enough, he did say he came from the Indies. Well, but didn't Cena do some shows out in California on the Indies before he got into OVW? Fuck, I hope he shows up at PWG. I think he wrestled Samoa Joe. Did he? Yes, back in the early... Nobody counts that part of their career. They only count the part that starts on WWE television.
00:42:14
Speaker
I don't know, they really do. They try and forget that anything ever existed. Honest to God, I don't know if any of these people were even born. That part of their life was before WWE doesn't exist. They started existing when they came through the door there. But sometimes they acknowledge the past.
00:42:34
Speaker
They selectively

Indie vs. WWE Wrestlers: A Discussion on Perceptions

00:42:35
Speaker
choose it. They have no problem acknowledging that Sami Zane and Kevin Owens had history before they got to WWE. But they make it feel like their history came from NXT. Well, Joe's promo that he had on Tuesday, he even said he's like, obviously me and AJ Styles have a past. And I was like, yo, there we go.
00:43:01
Speaker
But even with Miz addressing Daniel Bryan and him wrestling in armories and high school gyms and stuff like that, I mean, they're addressing the fact that their wrestling career began there, even if they don't reference specific feuds.
00:43:14
Speaker
I don't know, I think I do enjoy if a guy started in the endies, just because there's something about getting to see somebody go from the beginning to the top and get to see that progression and see the work being put in.
00:43:32
Speaker
they've had to adapt and change and learn a lot of different styles because they've had to travel the planet. Well, and that's what I think is fun about the Bucks is that, you know, like the Bucks can, since they've wrestled in Japan, they've wrestled in Mexico, they've wrestled in England, you know, they've wrestled all these different styles and that just makes them a very well-rounded team. Like they can put on something good with anyone. The question is, did you enjoy seeing Brock Lesnar back on Raw on Monday?
00:44:01
Speaker
I'm gonna go ahead and tell you this. I did not watch that highlight. At all? None of it? I did not see that part. I saw Roman cut the promo with Heyman coming out, but I never saw anything with Brock. All I saw was the meme of him holding the magazine. So you didn't get my reference earlier. Now I'm sad. I thought for sure you were in on that.
00:44:19
Speaker
Well, I know that he shoved Paul Heyman, correct? Well, they're definitely playing up all of the Internet's complaints about Brock Lesnar. They're just full on going for it. At one point, like Heyman comes into the backstage or I guess into Brock's locker room and Brock's just sitting there with his legs propped up. He's reading like a hunting magazine and Paul Heyman's like
00:44:42
Speaker
Did you just see what Roman Reigns said? And Brock sets up and he goes, I don't watch the show, Paul. Why would I watch the show? He just, that was the line. I fucking love that. I mean, I think this is one of the things I love about pro wrestling so much is when you just embrace what the fans perception of you is, you win them over.
00:45:06
Speaker
I think it's one of the issues they've had with Roman so much, is that they kind of don't fully embrace what he is with the fans. Although, that seems to be changing a little bit. I mean, what do you think happens? Do you think Paul Heyman joins Roman and helps him betray Lesnar?
00:45:26
Speaker
then Roman's a Paul Heyman guy, or is that a possibility? What happened? Here's what I want to happen, Garrett. Here's what I need to happen, to walk, to end my night watching Summer's Land with Tears of Joy streaming down my cheeks. I need Kevin Owens to somehow get that Money in the Bank briefcase from Braun Strowman. I don't care how he wins it. It doesn't matter. Get that briefcase. Braun's gonna chase after him, because he's not gonna knock out Braun.
00:45:55
Speaker
KO needs to get in a car or a limo, and he needs to drive away into the night. And everyone goes, ah, KO's gone. And Braun's pissed and leaves. And then whatever happens between Brock and Roman, maybe Brock wins again. Heyman can do something, betray Brock's low blow, whatever. I need KO to cash in. Just because everybody's dick hitting these days. It's really in vogue right now. Yeah, it's WWE low blow. That's the name of the show.
00:46:26
Speaker
Come on, man, that's what I want to happen. I don't think that's what's gonna happen. That's what I want to happen. I would love if KO walked away with the belt that night. Well, you don't need to say it like it's a little kid asking Santa to come visit him for Christmas. Did I just insult you? It came across as, hey, I would love to see that happen. It's not gonna. I know that's not what's gonna happen. I have no idea what's gonna happen. All I know is that I get to go watch this shit live one more time.
00:46:56
Speaker
That's right. You're going to be there. I completely forgot. And, you know, I'm no expectations anymore. Are you are you are you at least looking forward to the trip? I know you said you were looking forward to the Joey Janela show a little bit more. Very. Oh, my God. I don't think it had been announced yet. Did you see who got added the Joey Janela spring break? No, inform me, sir.
00:47:19
Speaker
He had been looking for a band from the 90s to perform at this show. Yeah. And eventually Smash Mouth responded and said how much money would we get?
00:47:30
Speaker
It's not Smash Mouth, but Weetus is performing at this. So not only will I get to see Meng versus Nick Gage, I will get to see Weetus perform teenage dirtbag. Good for you. I'm pretty excited about that. But no, I'm very excited about that. I'm excited about NXT. And after SmackDown last night, if you can tell, we normally record on Tuesdays, recording on Wednesday tonight.
00:47:55
Speaker
So, I'm very excited for Miz versus Daniel Bryan if we actually get it. You're getting quite a show. I mean, Miz versus Daniel Bryan, Samoa Joe versus AJ Styles. I know you're excited about the fifth meeting between Lesnar and Reigns. But isn't there something, though, when you have that as the main event that it just... it makes you kind of forget about everything else because you just know that's where we're headed?
00:48:22
Speaker
I guess. I don't know. We're expecting a fuck finish though, right? You can't at this point, can you? But by that I mean some debauchery that involves a title change. I don't mean like a DQ. I hope that they, I mean obviously Vince has a good relationship it seems with Brock Lesnar. I would love a Montreal screw job on Brock Lesnar where he just gets pinned clean. And then he's pissed off.
00:48:50
Speaker
and just destroys everything. The announce table, the steel steps. First four rows. Kerry, who sits inside. He's like, you think fucking Suzuki will fuck up the first four rows. Wait till you see what an angry Lesnar does. And there are children there.
00:49:06
Speaker
So beyond this, you're going to this show, but I watched some, it's a struggle for me to call it impact wrestling.

Impact Wrestling's Slammiversary Excitement

00:49:15
Speaker
It's TNA to me. It'll always be TNA. They can call it impact wrestling. They can make a resurgence. It's TNA. Hadn't watched any of that in years. Anything. Like that they've got an identity back. Like the yellow ropes. Like the camera set up. Watch that fatal four way that opened up the show. Good shit.
00:49:35
Speaker
who was the show opened with Ishimori, a bone soldier from the Bullet Club, Johnny Impact, Petey Williams. Petey Williams is the Canadian destroyer. He, I believe, actually invented the move, the Canadian destroyer. That would make sense. And Ray Phoenix. Phoenix, indeed. And we're saying Johnny Impact. It's John Morrison. It's Johnny Mundo. It's whoever he is and what company he's in. He has a different name in every company. He's got a lot of different names, man.
00:50:05
Speaker
But that guy's done a really good job of being able to move on from WWE and still do cool shit. I thought this was a really hot opener for Slammiversary. For sure. And before we did the podcast, I hadn't watched much TNA, but haven't watched in years. And it seems like they've got a good thing going again. Is that fair to say? I think that so it looked like what happened
00:50:33
Speaker
At least the majority of the roster now it seems like they're getting like some big people that are really hot on the indies like big people that WWE didn't get or doesn't want. But they've got a really good thing going right now. I mean, you're getting different types of indie wrestling matches like this opening match. You're getting a lot of high flying hard hitting just like just a crazy fucking match.
00:50:59
Speaker
and then all over the place there was a spot I wanted to note which I feel like I've I feel like I've had to have seen at some point but it felt like I hadn't where Phoenix does a drop kick off the top rope to break up a pin I think it was Ishimori trying to pin Petey Williams and it just looked brutal like wait are you talking when you like when Petey got double stomped in the face by Phoenix during the pin
00:51:27
Speaker
Is that what happened? I think it was Ishimori and Petey Williams fighting. Petey Williams, I believe, was getting pinned and Phoenix came and just like double stomped his face. I think it was supposed to be a drop kick, but it just looked like it was right in the goddamn face. I know, I actually made a note of that too.
00:51:45
Speaker
Well it was off the rope. Like it looked like Phoenix hopped up on the rope expecting to do something to Ishimori. And then Ishimori goes for the pin so he just jumped like he just jumped over there. It looked brutal. That was what I made of it. Yeah. I mean what did you I don't know how much Ray Phoenix you'd seen. What did you think of him?
00:52:06
Speaker
Uh, pretty good stuff. As far as, like, I guess the indie high flyers, he's top of the list, right? I mean, he is easily one of the best luchadors. Yeah, for sure. And, I don't know, what other notes did I make on this? Towards the beginning, they started off, you know, everybody fights, and then it ended up with two in the ring, and we had Mundo and Ishimori, and all I could think is, like, fuck, these guys look like action figures. There were, like, 1,000 abs between the two of them.
00:52:35
Speaker
uh i think it was weird it took me some time to get used to calling john him calling him johnny impact that name sucks even when he rotates last names through there he really does i mean in lucha underground he's johnny mundo
00:52:50
Speaker
I do think what you said about impact just going out and getting like the indie guys, it's a very Ring of Honor approach, wouldn't you say? Honestly, I think they have some better people than the Ring of Honor roster. Are you becoming a fan, a full-time fan? Well, I can't say that now, but I mean, based off of just what happened in Slammiversary, I was just wildly impressed with what they did. And there was something really fun about a Canadian crowd.
00:53:18
Speaker
Yeah. At what point, what P.D. Williams hops up on the rope and he gets everyone to sing along with the O Canada? Yes, I loved it. I just I don't think I had ever watched a full, fully Canadian crowd like maybe a WWE show, but getting to see just like a balls wild indie show with wild Canadians in the crowd loved it. What more of that? I do have to talk about this, though. This is important to me. OK.
00:53:46
Speaker
The next match that came up is Tessa Blanchard versus Allie. I don't watch Impact. I have not ever, I mean, other than when I watched it with my buddy Daniel a few weeks ago and nothing recent. So I had no idea what storylines were going on. And the promo package that before this Allie versus Tessa match had me in fucking tears, Derek.
00:54:10
Speaker
Oh, you were worked up? I was laughing so hard. So apparently, Ali is just like a bubbly blonde, Tessa Blanchard, Tully Blanchard's kid. She's playing the heel. And as they're going through this, some crazy shit must have been happening the last couple of months. It gets to Ali, her part, and she goes, yeah, I've had a rough year. My best friend died. I got stuffed in a casket and consumed by darkness. But you know, things are looking up.
00:54:43
Speaker
And it cuts to Tessa, and she's like, so what? Her best friend died, she got put in a casket, move on. And I'm just like, Jesus Christ! And I guess in the storyline, her best friend is kind of like an evil demon?
00:54:59
Speaker
Okay, and she's dead it showed her getting burnt burnt alive or whatever in like a video package Showed an alley getting stuffed in a casket and when she says consumed by darkness she came out with demon face paint But it sounds like she's battled her demons. It's just a bubbly blonde again I feel like we're getting a fucking Buffy the vampire Slayer story, and I'm loving the shit out of it That's fine. Why not? I mean
00:55:24
Speaker
I was not expecting that. So I mean, over at impact, I'm getting these weird ass stories. I'm getting some pretty great high flyers. The X division championship match was Matt Seidel versus Brian Cage.
00:55:39
Speaker
Those are two guys, too, that just looking at him, I'm like, I never thought I'd get to see Brian Cage in a company. He dwarfed Seidel. Oh, I mean, the thing is, Cage isn't a super tall guy. He's just so fucking jacked. He's beefy? Yeah.
00:55:55
Speaker
He's a guy that vents would love if there weren't supplements to make him that size of a person. I was at a PWG show and somebody said to me, they're like, yeah, I went over and asked Cage how much it cost to look like Cage. And they said- Did they give an answer? He said five grand a month.
00:56:15
Speaker
Wow, really? That's like, that's a lot of shows to make that. That's just what a guy told me though. I don't want to like put any rumors out there about Cage. Okay. But when you get a guy that big, I know a lot of people call him Lucha Lesnar. Cause he wrestles Lucha style, but he's a giant fucking dude. And him and Matt, him and Matt Seidel put on a hell of a show and now we have a new X division champ and Brian Cage.
00:56:40
Speaker
Yeah, unexpected. Honestly, anybody in that seems like they could wrestle in almost any division. I mean, even their heavyweight championship match. Yeah, I guess you could. I don't even know if you could call it more of a main event style. It wasn't necessarily as flippy. It was Pentagon versus Sammy Callahan and a mask versus air match.
00:57:01
Speaker
And at one point, they had railroad spikes. I mean, this thing was fucking bloody, like they're both gushing. Pentagon took one of these railroad spikes on top of Sammy Callahan's head and was hitting it with a baseball bat. Yeah, it was it's fucking gross. I was I was into it. Impressed by this.
00:57:21
Speaker
Speaking of Nick Gage, the king of this podcast, Nick Gage, if he ever asks, he is. I think Hulk Hogan, he wants back in WWE. They've allowed him back in. I think there should have been a stipulation.
00:57:38
Speaker
You gotta go re- Nick Gage? Nick Gage at GCW, one match, that's it. 15 minute time limit, so if you hit the end, you're done. You don't gotta go anymore, you're back end. And then- You think Hogan's going over? It doesn't fucking matter. Would people be pissed, would people be pissed if Hogan just manhandled Nick Gage? I think what would be funny is if we got, if we got Hogan in like a New Japan match, he drops the leg and somebody kicks out of it. He's gonna be baffled.
00:58:07
Speaker
What? It's the boot, brother. The big boot knocks him out. The leg is just the cherry on top. But no, I feel like if Hogan can go through a full Nick Gage deathmatch, we'll forgive him. Well, not necessarily forgive him, but we'll let him back in. We'll be like, did you see that fucking bloody beating he took?
00:58:29
Speaker
I don't know, man, if Helen can take a beating and a GCW death match from Nick Gage, I think you forgive him. Does anybody really want to argue that? I mean, like we can't, I don't know. Do you call it forgiveness or do you just be like forgiveness? We'll let you back in even if, even if you can't drop a leg drop anymore.
00:58:53
Speaker
That's going to be on iTunes later. Drop $1.29 on that fun podcast. I'll be competing with Elias' album, which is out now. I heard that went pretty high on the charts. Is it an actual album? What is the thing? It did. I haven't. You know what? I should have checked it out, but I didn't. Back to impact. I'm sorry. Yeah.
00:59:12
Speaker
I was actually going to transition to something else, but if you have something else you want to say. Oh, no, I guess just to end it right now where impact is like based off of what I watch with Daniel, I watched, you know, some AJ Styles versus Christopher Daniels and these X division matches. I watched Samoa Joe versus Kurt Angle. They were all just fucking excellent. And I feel like
00:59:35
Speaker
They got such a bad rap on what was happening in their main event scene that this other stuff got a little overshadowed to me. And I feel like right now they're actually in a position to compete again. Yeah, they may very well be. If they can consistently put on these indie style matches and maybe occasionally offer up a weird story like I got out of the Tessa Blanchard match, cool.
01:00:01
Speaker
Do you think that's like a fusion of Ring of Honor and WWE style? Honestly, that is what it felt like. But even the part that I would have to call WWE style was still crazy. You know, like that. Yeah. It was like a hardcore match. I mean, they were supernatural. Yeah. I don't know. I don't know how to describe it. They're doing a pretty interesting thing right now. And I was shocked when I walked away wanting to tune into Impact.
01:00:28
Speaker
We talked about the scenario. You could potentially be covering even more wrestling now. I think I have to because I like most of their roster. Hey man, good luck. It's a lot of wrestling. So I want to bring this up before the end of the episode because I just want to gauge everyone's reactions, see what you think, see what the listeners think.

Experimenting with WWE Nostalgia

01:00:51
Speaker
So while I was back home in Pittsfield this past weekend,
01:00:55
Speaker
I came across my old collection of raw and smackdown magazines. Had a lot of them. They were in there, went through them, flipped through them, they were a trip. Watching the old, or not watching, but looking through the old ads, Mountain Dew Baja Blast, Bod, Body Spray, that kind of thing. A couple of the old paper mail-ins for magazine subscriptions fell out of the magazine.
01:01:20
Speaker
So I have a couple of the raw magazine mail-in subscription forms that you don't have to pay any postage on, that you just fill out your information and send it in, and then they can bill you later.
01:01:33
Speaker
As an experiment, I'm going to send a couple of these in and see what I get back, if anything. Because I'm pretty sure there is no more WWE magazine. Obviously, there's no Raw or SmackDown magazine. I just want to see if I get a response. What do you think is going to happen? Well, I think you're going to get a flash drive in the mail.
01:01:54
Speaker
and you're gonna wonder, what is this flash drive? This is gonna get my computer viruses. But then you get brave and you go through with it. You put the flash drive in, it's a five second video. Empty frame, nothing in. Vince McMahon walks into frame, looks down the barrel of the camera, gives you a crotch chop, walks away.
01:02:12
Speaker
I would be very happy with that as a return. Yeah, I don't think that's gonna happen either. I think nothing, I think nothing will happen, but I hope that they bring the magazine back for you.
01:02:25
Speaker
Well, I have a couple of them, so maybe they'll be like, wait, Vince is like, there's a demand, clearly. If you dig through all those magazines, I'm sure you could find a whole handful of them and be like, this guy just ordered 15 subscriptions to this. I think he put the magazine back in business. Is that against the law to just fraudulently fill out a bunch of fake names and addresses? I think it's a pretty common prank to sign people up for magazines they don't want.
01:02:53
Speaker
You could just check the box that says bill me later and the possibilities are endless. Maybe I'll get every issue that ever existed. I don't know what's going to happen. I'm going to try it later this week. We'll see what happens. But if you want any of the posters out of those magazines, let me know. I've got tons of posters I didn't use. I actually remember the very first raw magazine I got. What was on it? It was Triple H on the cover and a snake.
01:03:21
Speaker
Like an animated snake and I got that while I was in the hospital getting my appendix taken out. Was it WWF magazine? It was a WWF magazine. Gotcha. And the night I got my appendix taken out, I woke up and was very, very mad because it was the night that the corporation and the ministry formed the corporate ministry.
01:03:44
Speaker
and I wasn't taping it, so I didn't get to see it. The night I got my appendix taken out, I was unconscious, recovering, and my mom watched the Scott Steiner WCW promo, and that is forever going to be her perception of pro wrestling, and I'm okay with that. To her, she's like, this is that thing Derek likes.
01:04:04
Speaker
Yeah, roided out Scott Steiner with a with a couple of women at his side screaming into the camera about how he's the big bad booty daddy. I don't think that's necessarily an inaccurate depiction of pro wrestling. You mean if you could sum up pro wrestling in one person, it would be Scott Steiner and his like chain male hat. It'd be. Yeah, sure. Absolutely. That's pro wrestling.
01:04:29
Speaker
I don't know if I told this story. This was when I was at Mania in Dallas. I was at WrestleCon. Scott Steiner and Rick Steiner were at a table together. But they weren't signing together. You had to pay for them separately.
01:04:46
Speaker
really yes like if it were I didn't conquer oh yeah and I'm gonna tell you one guy had a huge line one guy didn't have anyone I kind of figure out who yeah you can kind of figure that out in your head and at one point as he was sitting there Rick Steiner goes well I guess I don't fucking need these anymore picks up a handful of sharpies and just launches them across the room sits down in his chair and crosses his arms
01:05:13
Speaker
That's kinda sad, that's a sad story. Rick Steiner's sad that he's not as over as his brother. But do you, I don't know, does that make you, if you're standing there and he screams that while you're handing Scott Steiner $20, do you pity give him $20 as well? Or do you look down the line and you're like, actually, Ricochet's over there and I'd rather give him $20.
01:05:34
Speaker
I think the reality is you move on with your life. And you see some weird shit at those cons, man. As I was walking around, I kept walking by Hacksaw Jim Duggan's table, happy as fucking can be, so happy to talk to everybody. Everybody keeps walking by going, Hacksaw, can I get a picture with you? He's like, of course, man. And then doing the, hey, got a pile of boards that he had autographed that no one is buying. And as the guy walks away with the picture, people just keep getting him with him. And I hear his daughter go,
01:06:03
Speaker
Dad, you have to start charging, that's why we're here. He's a nice guy and he's like, it's a picture. Man, now I'm just thinking of all these fucking stories from that. Actually, was it on Slammiversary that, oh shit, that was another weird one. We had Eddie Edwards versus, fuck, why can't it, Tommy Dreamer.
01:06:29
Speaker
in a really weird match where Eddie Edwards thought that Tommy Dreamer slept with his wife. And that's why the match was happening. And the whole time in these promos, he's like, I don't know what he wants me to say. I didn't have sex with his wife.
01:06:48
Speaker
Like, and the thing is, as you're watching, you're like, he definitely didn't. Like, I believe Tommy Dreamer. And he's just like, we were buddies. Why does he think I did this? I don't know. Now we have to have a match. And that's how wrestling works. But same WrestleCon. I was at the urinal. A man comes up next to me and just starts chatting me up while I'm taking a piss. It's Tommy Dreamer.
01:07:09
Speaker
He's like, really? Why haven't I not heard this story before? As we're standing there, I'm just standing there taking a piss. Tommy Dreamer comes over and he's like, hey man, how's it going? And I look over and I'm like, holy shit, yeah, it's going well. And then just out of absolutely nowhere, unprovoked, tells me a story about a time that he stole his parents' car so that he could drive into the city and buy a WWF video game.
01:07:34
Speaker
And that sounds like something I'd do and the story started in the bathroom. We washed our hands next to each other He's still telling me the stories We're leaving the bathroom and we have to stop and so that he can stand there and just tell me the conclusion of the story Were you entertained?
01:07:51
Speaker
I was, I was just like, God, I guess WrestleCon's the best place in the world if you're just gonna, you're gonna get drive-by storytelling from WECW Legends. Well, we're gonna have an opportunity to do that at Starcast. We're gonna be in a room with a lot of different people. I'm hoping we get a bunch of good stories, and I hope we get a couple of them for this podcast.
01:08:11
Speaker
Yeah, we're definitely going to be interviewing a couple people, don't know who yet. I think that is hopefully going to be finalized here in the next couple of weeks. I mean, a month away, man. Yeah, it's a month away. They got to tell us sometime. Like I said, fingers crossed for Macaulay Culkin. I have got my heart set on Macaulay. I want Macaulay. I want Noel Foley. Maybe not MJF, though.
01:08:36
Speaker
We can try, though. If he comes, he's just going to be mean to us. And I don't know if I can handle that for an hour. Won't that be entertaining for everyone listening, though? I feel like at a certain point, though, if he isn't going to cooperate to just hang out, what do you talk about? How much why he charges $5 for a picture and why Hacksaw Jim Duggan gives them away for free.
01:09:01
Speaker
He's like, Hacksaw's already done it. He came up, he made his money. I'm like, hey, I bet Hacksaw wouldn't mind the money. He's just a nice guy. He's like, well, guess what? I'm not. And David Arquette bought him that Burberry scarf now, so he's got a real one and he's gonna treat us even shittier. Like, we can't even call it a knockoff anymore. He's got a new one. He's legit. Yeah, he's the shit. He's the shit. Well, man, what else you got left this week?
01:09:29
Speaker
I think it's time to tell them about all of our social medias. We have social media? Yeah, we have social media. Hey, we're up to date. We've got the social medias. Derek, hit them with those web addresses. Hey, hit us up on the social media, guys. At Wrestle Hangout on Twitter. At Wrestle Hangout on Facebook.

01:10:11
Speaker
