Podcast Introduction and Health Focus

00:00:35
Speaker
Hey everybody, welcome to another episode of Nice Boys Who Like Deathmatch Wrestling and? I would say that it's Nice Boys Who Like Deathmatch Wrestling and mental and physical health. Yeah, I was gonna say and like not being paralyzed. Yeah, also good. How's everybody doing out there?
00:00:56
Speaker
I think everybody's more asking, like, how are you doing? Well, I mean, I guess I understand why. I'm doing OK, doing all right mentally, physically. I mean, there's this whole neck brace on me, so.
00:01:12
Speaker
But outside of that, I'm doing okay. Surgery went well. We're on the one step at a time, the PMA part of a neck surgery. Just keeping that positive attitude one foot in front of the other.
00:01:29
Speaker
If you don't mind, I'll kind of

Wrestling Injury and Recovery Journey

00:01:31
Speaker
break down what happened. No, please do. So I wrestled in Tennessee and Crossville on Friday. The cannot remember the day it would have been. Give me just one second. Everyone.
00:01:51
Speaker
This is filler music. This is filler music. It would have been on the 30th of July. Russell the guy we were calling our match. During the call a cutter got called.
00:02:11
Speaker
It was in the opening part of the match. He goes to hit a cutter on me, had me hooked just a little too tight, like my neck just didn't really have anywhere to go. And instead of laying out flat, he ended up landing on his butt and lower back, which caused my neck. The only way I can describe it is it felt like the back of my head touched the middle of my back.
00:02:41
Speaker
That's such an awful and scary visual and something that typically only like a stretch Armstrong. Right. Exactly. Exactly. Like you might be able to do it like once with like a Masters of the Universe toy.
00:02:55
Speaker
But that head's never gonna turn the same way. You probably are gonna lose the head. It shouldn't happen to an action figure, so it probably shouldn't happen to a human body either. So that happens. I take the move, and I'm laying in the ring, and for about, I would say about 45 seconds, I couldn't feel my...
00:03:22
Speaker
extremities couldn't feel my arms or my legs couldn't feel my feet or my hands and the wrestler in me pulled the ref to the side and said tell him to buy me some time tell him to buy me some time I can't feel my arms and legs and I pulled him aside like I'm assuming you just
00:03:40
Speaker
He came over to check on me. I didn't do anything because I couldn't move. But I he came over and I said, tell him to buy me some time because I thought that maybe it was just a sensation I had gotten from the move that my body was just kind of in shock because.
00:04:00
Speaker
You know, things happen. It's stingers are a real thing. I thought maybe it was just a stinger. And as I was as I was telling the ref that I was starting to get feeling back in my arms. So if I was getting feeling back in my arms, I knew I was going to get feeling back in my legs. And so I told him to come over, pin me, come over and pin me.
00:04:20
Speaker
I have the shittiest kick out I've had of my entire wrestling career because I couldn't use my legs at all so I just threw my arm as hard as I could and it still looked like trash and I told him while he was on top of me I said buy me 45 seconds till the legs come back and then we'll just continue the match as is.
00:04:41
Speaker
um ref gives me maybe i don't know probably 20 seconds and by this point i've picked my legs up and bent them at the knee so like i'm in like a like almost fetal position but on my back um
00:04:58
Speaker
And I come over, the ref comes over and I look at the ref and I said, I'm getting my legs back. I should, we should be able to finish this. And as I'm saying that both my legs just fall to the side. And I look back at the ref and I said, you're going to have to call this match because I can't stand up.
00:05:16
Speaker
And so he calls the match off, I get taken to the back, looked over by like an emergency, like a first responder, came back, looked me over. He was just happened to be a fan at the show, came around and looked, checked me out. Thank God for those people. Yeah, right. Exactly. Exactly. More emergency responders that are fans in the crowd. Right. And so he came and checked me out and he was like, he was like from
00:05:45
Speaker
he was like I can't tell you what to do he said but he said if because by this point I was walking around by the time I got to the back I could kind of walk around there's not a lot of strength behind my legs but I could
00:06:01
Speaker
He told me, he said, hey, if you don't start getting strength back in your legs and your arms, he said in about 45 minutes, uh, he was, he said, I would recommend going to the hospital. He said, because my assumption is, is with how quickly your legs and arms responded, it's probably a stinger. Um, he said, but if, if it doesn't all come back within, you know, 40 minutes, he said, you should probably go to the hospital.
00:06:31
Speaker
Well, I'm not going to say here and say that I'm the smartest man in the entire world. And I went straight to the hospital right then and there because everything came back except for my hands and my hands felt like they were burning. And my hands felt like they were burning for three days. And I waited till Monday. I waited till the following Monday and walked into the hospital on Monday. Took about six hours in the
00:07:01
Speaker
And the ER got a CT scan and an MRI. And this is how quickly everything turned. I was there and I was like, I've got a stinger. It's like probably like a grade two stinger. And that's why my hands feel that way. And they're going to tell me, hey, wait like four weeks and your hands will feel normal again.
00:07:23
Speaker
That is not the case. I waited, I got the CT. They came back and they were giving me, we were still in the waiting room for the CT. And they came back and told me, she said, I can definitely see that one of your discs is herniated through just the CT scan. But we're gonna do an MRI just to see which disc and how bad.
00:07:44
Speaker
Um, so I waited, you know, maybe another hour or so they come back for the MRI. I got in that tiny little tube that's way too close and like, didn't tell the lady that I'm a little bit claustrophobic. And so I just sat there and counted seconds while I was in the, uh,
00:08:03
Speaker
while I was in the MRI machine and they came back with the MRI results and told me that I had my C5 and C7 discs were herniated, which was causing a narrowing of my spinal column.
00:08:24
Speaker
And it was flattening one side because essentially what had happened was is the discs had become so herniated inward that they were essentially touching my spinal cord, which was flattening out my spinal cord. And so like all of that, I've given all of this information just, you know, somebody just came out and vomited it at me. And I'm like, okay, like,
00:08:47
Speaker
I'm not a doctor so I have no idea what any of this means. I understand what a herniation and a disc is but that doesn't mean that I understand like spinal narrowing. I will say throughout like most of this your wife was texting me updates and I'm like looking at Leah like I don't know what the fuck any of this means.
00:09:08
Speaker
So you and I were in the same boat. This sounds bad. But we'll wait and see. You're right. Right. Because sometimes things sound bad and it turns out they're not bad at all. And then, you know, I was afraid like if I tried to Google any of it, the Internet would just be like, oh, exactly. Exactly.
00:09:26
Speaker
You can't WebMD anything. Like if you try to look for stubbing your toe remedies, it's going to tell you you have cancer. That's what WebMD is here for. It's here to scare you. It is here to place fear inside your body. That is all WebMD is for. So anyway, so I get all this information kind of thrown at me.
00:09:52
Speaker
And the first doctor, like the first doctor who had come in and seen me said, yeah, we're just waiting for neurosurgery to look it over. But probably what's going to happen is they're probably going to send you home and get back with you.
00:10:10
Speaker
in a week or two. Set a follow up appointment and we'll you know go from there. As far as like surgery or just you know rehabbing it you know whatever. And that's all said and so Kelly and I are kind of setting in the in the.
00:10:32
Speaker
in the in the waiting like in the in the emergency room like room like the the single bedroom and we're sitting in there and I was like okay well you know if it's if it's physical therapy that's not a problem I can do that if it's surgery we'll just get it scheduled and get it done
00:10:47
Speaker
and I think 10 minutes had passed and that same doctor and a trauma nurse from the ICU walk in at the same time about 10 minutes after he's telling me I'm probably going home and the trauma nurse walks in and says we've talked to neurosurgery you're having emergency surgery eight o'clock tomorrow morning.
00:11:10
Speaker
So it gave, like, there wasn't even time for me to compartmentalize, like, hey, you have herniated discs and a narrowing of your spinal column. I didn't even have time to Google it before they were already back telling me, hey, you're going to surgery like right now.
00:11:28
Speaker
Um, and so, uh, I ended up, a lot of people don't get that kind of service, right? Yeah, you absolutely right. You got a front of the line. It was, yeah, that's what, that's what kind of what I said was, is like, I know that my buddy Jesse had to wait forever to get his surgery and they were just like, we're getting it in now.
00:11:49
Speaker
I guess it was bad. This all goes back. I'm sorry. I can't stop thinking about while you were still in the ring and you tell the ref, give me 45 seconds. And he's just like, my friend, this is an indie show. Best I can do. Yeah, exactly. Exactly. Hey, listen, we got to get in and get out, brother. We got to hit these times.
00:12:13
Speaker
Domino's wants their commercials played. So I go to the, and I'm in the ICU, just like, not waiting room, but what is it called? I'm on the ICU floor. And the reason I'm on the ICU floor is because I have a spinal injury. That's the way they put people who have spinal injuries on the ICU floor.
00:12:38
Speaker
Um, but nobody told me that until I was already on the ICU floor for a couple hours and I was like, why am I on ICU? Is there like thread of me dying? And she's like, no, no, no, no. It's because you are on, uh, uh, a very specific, like I couldn't, I had to lay my head down. Like I wasn't allowed to lift my head for any reason whatsoever.
00:13:02
Speaker
Um, they actually have those beds that tip up kind of like, uh, you know, like a Dracula coffins. Like, so I got to use one of the Dracula coffin beds and, uh, which will be part of your entrance. Yeah, exactly. I'm going to listen. Now, Mr. Black doesn't want to know more. It's mine now. Um, but, uh, so I'm there and I'm kind of, uh, you know, freaking out, uh, of course, because like.
00:13:28
Speaker
It was a lot of information that was thrown at me. And so we, I go to bed, well, go to bed is a relative term because there was not really a whole lot of sleep going on in that room that night. It was mostly just being on the phone till like four or five o'clock in the morning, then sleeping for maybe two hours and getting up and it was time for surgery. Had my surgery, they said that it went very well.
00:13:59
Speaker
But because of the surgery now, I'm out of action for a while and I've gotta be in a neck brace for at least three months. So, all over a cutter. I was gonna say, like a move that used to be a finisher that basically got turned into a punch.
00:14:23
Speaker
Exactly, see that's what happens when you got 36 year old bones. I was trying to describe to a friend, like what happened to you? And I was like, even if I saw it, I don't know if I'd be able to describe it. Like, because the way you talk to me, like your neck, the head touching the back. Yeah, the back. How the fuck does that happen with a cutter? Yeah, I mean, apparently if you come down with enough force, your head can do a lot of things.
00:14:53
Speaker
He's trying to turn it back into a finish. Yeah, that's right. He's dangerous again. It's fucked up as it is. DDP is like you got to protect that. Yeah. You know what? You know what? Hey, consider me consider me part of reinstating the diamond cutter as a finish. But so I had the surgery, had to spend a couple more days in the hospital.
00:15:18
Speaker
Um, and now I'm kind of at home rehabbing, just, you know, sitting around and watching. Whatever, whatever I want to watch, really like been watching some wrestling, but mostly trying to watch things like restarted sons of anarchy, of course, because when I'm a little depressed boy, I watch depressing shows.
00:15:46
Speaker
Maybe I need to come over, we can restart New Girl, and turn this back into the New Girl podcast. It was always meant to be. You know what? You're right. You're right. We're done talking about death matches. We're done talking about wrestling in general. Let's just talk about the relationship dynamics of everybody on New Girl. Schmidt and Nick. All of this wasn't from a fucking death match.
00:16:11
Speaker
Nope. Nope. I wish I would have been in a deathmatch because then I would just been dealing with a cut. Maybe, you know, like I definitely wouldn't have been taking a cutter. Or it was from a cutter and it was like, but it would have looked real fucking cool.
00:16:33
Speaker
I can, the only cutter I can think of in a death match was our cat going for the cutter on Nick Gage. Yep. Yeah. What? Lost in escape from LA. Escape from LA. Escape from LA. We watched that show together. That might've been one of our first hangs. I think that was the first time that we watched a show together.
00:16:53
Speaker
Hold on just one second. We'll get back to it here in just a second. Here you go. There is the video. You might have to press play again. But Garrett is now watching the footage of the... Are you fighting Pentagon Jr.? No, I wish. You can kind of see it. We had to slow it down. It doesn't look terrible when you watch it.
00:17:20
Speaker
But then if you really start to pay attention, you're seeing way too much of my eyes to be seeing that much of my back. Yeah. I love that. I don't love that. Yeah. But yeah, so it's been an eventful couple of weeks.
00:17:42
Speaker
man like looking at that makes me think of like in jackass how they talked about how the most painful things don't really look right like you want it to yeah yeah yeah the painful things look mundane comparative to the stuff that doesn't hurt you at all like I'll say this going through that glass pane with AJ
00:18:03
Speaker
like of course you know it's death magic fucking like it doesn't feel great but but i could tell you that it didn't fucking make me paralyzed for 45 seconds
00:18:15
Speaker
I think this just means when you come back, you're gonna cut a motherfucker's head off. You're gonna come back with a goddamn vengeance. Yep, you're absolutely fucking right. Because with that being said, it was the week before Futures. It was the week before SCI. And we had talked early in the iteration of the podcast as it is now. We had talked about how this was gonna be my summer.
00:18:44
Speaker
Kind of was up until this injury I was debuting in a whole bunch of new places and and Was really like was hitting my stride in matches where I was getting more comfortable with my style of wrestling And it was I will tell you that I had a lot of FOMO last weekend a lot of FOMO really bummed out about a lot of stuff and
00:19:09
Speaker
Not not i'm so happy for everybody who who got to do sci and got to do futures but there was a level of anger. With with with watching any other scene like what twitter was talking about because.
00:19:28
Speaker
uh that was gonna be it was gonna be my weekend you know it was that that was my that was my tournament to win um and uh it's so it's you know you live you learn like uh i got the biggest w in my life uh i walked out of the hospital on my own two feet i wasn't in a fucking wheelchair i was able to walk
00:19:48
Speaker
and me still being able to walk even do this like sit here and have a conversation with you that's the W that's the W and I have to remind myself of that the only other thing that I would like to kind of do with this with all of this is is like know that I'm okay know that I understand that it's a long journey I know this one foot in front of the other
00:20:13
Speaker
The only other thing that I really want to do is I just want to say thank you to everybody. Thank you to you. Thank you to Leah. Thank you to Kelly obviously but like thank you to the people who have rallied around me. Struggles put out a t-shirt right after I got injured and it sold quite a few.
00:20:38
Speaker
And I can't begin to tell you guys how much that means to me because I've always done the wrestling thing just because it was something I wanted to do. But to know that there are people out there that, you know, give enough of a shit about me to buy the shirt because they know what's going on.
00:20:59
Speaker
Made is gonna make this journey to being healthy again a whole hell of a lot easier because Because of you guys Because of the fans that are that have been listening since the beginning and you know any new fans that may come around now or in the future That's why I do the wrestling shit. That's why we do the podcast. It's for you guys and it's uh, it's just been it's been humbling and
00:21:25
Speaker
And I've been grateful to everybody. And I just I just want to say thank you. I want to say thank you for everybody rallying around. And now that I've been all fucking sappy, let's talk about something else. It is.
00:21:41
Speaker
On that topic for just one more second, it is really nice. I just started getting on Twitter again for the first time in forever. That place is awful. This was like the only thing I saw any wrestling fans agree on.
00:21:58
Speaker
was that we fucking care about. No one was being shitty about it. So it's just like, at the very least, you brought us together. I can say for about an eight to 12 hour period, wrestling Twitter was all on the same page about me. And it was in a positive way. And that was, like I said, it was very humbling. It was very, it made me recognize that
00:22:26
Speaker
The hard work I have been putting in hasn't gone unnoticed. And also remember, like I said in the tweet, it's not over. It's onwards and upwards. When I come back, it's always the hard way. And just thank you, everybody.
00:22:45
Speaker
The fucking pop you're going to get when you come through that curtain. You know, return, you know, I'm hoping it's going to be a good one. Yeah, it's going to be a really good one. Hopefully I just keep on the straight and narrow. Let's try to get back as soon as possible. Let's try to like not rush it. But but be healthy and come back the right way, because so many people come back the wrong way. And I refuse to come back the wrong way. Like.
00:23:12
Speaker
I can't I can't promote things like mental health and physical health and then rush an injury back especially with the neck like I can't rush that I've got it I've got to let it heal in the time it takes to heal it you know grow bone over fucking screws and shit so
00:23:34
Speaker
But we'll get there. It'll it'll it'll get better. It's just a matter of time. I can do that shit in like two days. I know. I know. Wolverine. I know. He's got him. Yeah. The fucking real life Wolverine. What the fuck is going on? Like I don't like just OK. You guys want me back. Get me a vial of John Cena's blood and I will inject that shit into me and then you won't be able to see me and I'll have Wolverine powers. And that'll be dope.
00:23:59
Speaker
You have heard a challenge issue, do you all? We don't care how you get it. Listen, a lot of you wrestling fans are miscreants. And I feel like you have ways to get people's blood. Can you give me some John Cena blood so I can drink it? I'll drink it on the podcast. Listen, we'll even do a video podcast to drink John Cena's blood.
00:24:22
Speaker
We'll start it out with some tweets. You guys like really fucking nailed John Cena with give hard way. You're blood. I'm gonna talk myself into a John Cena deathmatch, baby. Hey, from what's happened in NXT in the last few days?
00:24:42
Speaker
I think they wanna fucking hire you. They're looking for tall boys. They're looking for tall big boys, I saw. They're looking for tall big boys. That's all they want now. That's all they want. Johnny Gargano's probably done it. Tommaso Champa, thing of the fucking past. They're getting you in there. They want WWF 1986 back. That's what Vincent Mann said. He said, if you're on the Roys, I want you. I hope he's right.
00:25:09
Speaker
I hope he's right that this is the wrestling we all need. Because it's been so long since we've seen steroid guys. Yeah, I know. I kind of miss steroid guys. Same. Like, I don't know that we've had this conversation, but like, oh yeah, we've talked about the first wrestling I ever watched, which was Royal Rumble 91. But I can tell you right now that the first person that ever truly caught my eye was the Warlord. Because the Warlord essentially
00:25:38
Speaker
was Stone Cold Steve Austin. If you just put about 150 pounds of muscle on top of Stone Cold Steve Austin. And I saw him and I was like, that man's not real. There's no way that has to be a bodysuit. I don't understand. How is he covered in boulders? I just remember being a child and being mesmerized by just the roidiest dude in the entire fucking world.
00:26:05
Speaker
being like, man, I didn't even know there was a muscle there. How would Kelly feel if we started putting some needles in your butt? Kelly has went on record as saying that if I do steroids that I will need to find a new place to live.
00:26:27
Speaker
She won't notice for a few months. Yeah, it'll take like four to six months. I've started going to Planet Fitness again. I'll start asking around. Yeah, yeah.
00:26:51
Speaker
The only steroids you could probably get at Planet Fitness is a guy with his inhaler. I guess steroids of inhaler for his allergies.
00:27:00
Speaker
my favorite thing I've ever like yeah if you're not getting steroids at Planet Fitness I watched a guy on a bicycle pedaling sweating drinking a fucking big gulp oh my god I loved him I loved him god damn it
00:27:15
Speaker
He's got the stuff we need. Yeah, he like my favorite my favorites have always been when I go to Planet Fitness My favorite is the the very country fellow that sometimes comes into my Planet Fitness That wears his full-blown bib overalls and a button-up shirt and walks on the treadmill like and I'm like 60% sure he has a dip in his mouth like
00:27:40
Speaker
But that guy that guy is coming comes in. I mean, like three times a week and he like he's doing it, but his body has changed none because he's doing about two miles an hour on the treadmill and at no incline. And he's just going to do that forever. Like he does this. He does this two miles. He gets off and he walks home.
00:28:04
Speaker
But on his way into that gym, he passes a sign that says no judgment. Yep, you got them right. And he takes that directly to heart. I'm not judging him. I'm just saying he's not going to get in better shape doing what he's doing.
00:28:22
Speaker
See, I'm I don't know if I go to get in shape or just to catch up on what's going on on Fox News. Yeah, God. Doesn't it feel like the most the most central TV is always on Fox News at Planet Fitness? Like, like if it's like CNN's off in the dark corner and then they and then it's like and then it's like ABC Sports or NBC Sports and then like and then ESPN and then right in the fucking middle Fox News. And it feels like that TV is just a little bit bigger.
00:28:51
Speaker
where it's just like a TV that's like these fucking immigrants. And then on the TV next to it, it's like the impractical joke. Yeah, exactly. We're in the middle of an office marathon. God, Planet Fitness is a fun place. Yeah, it is. I don't know if they still do this, but the one on the other side of town that I used to go to had pizza days.
00:29:16
Speaker
that breakfast days when you came in just a giant fucking bucket of tootsie rolls. So most of like here's what I'll say is is that the tootsie rolls I have noticed are gone because I won't even lie and say that I haven't indulged in the occasional wayward tootsie roll because it was, you know, I had a good workout. I'd like to undo that by about a quarter.
00:29:41
Speaker
But I've never participated in the Planet Fitness pizza days, but I know that the pizza they get is the alt-right pizza. They don't buy local, they go Papa John's. Which is great. It's so fucking on brand.
00:30:14
Speaker
Man, it's been a minute since we recorded. It has. And a fucking lot has happened in wrestling since we last recorded. Like here's what I would say is since the last time we recorded, the way I would describe it is everything has happened.

Mainstream Attention in Deathmatch Wrestling

00:30:30
Speaker
I mean.
00:30:33
Speaker
I like AEW a lot. I rarely watch it live. I tuned in to AEW and then MJF comes out and says, I'm bringing fucking Nick Gage out. And then he fucking brought Nick Gage out. Yeah, which was because we all know what kind of asshole MJF is. Very much could have done like you
00:30:57
Speaker
like 97 Sean Michaels against like the Hart Foundation when he brought out like the little person version of Bret Hart. He could have brought out like little Nick Gage. Oh my God. Oh, I said a Dewey Donovan from now on. We need a mini Nick Gage. It's miniature. A little pizza cutter. A little pizza cutter, yeah, a little bandana.
00:31:19
Speaker
a wee little Nick Gage, I would love that. Pretty much after that, the second that happened on TV, I was looking at my phone like, how far is Charlotte? I've been watching this guy like throughout, I mean,
00:31:36
Speaker
Through pre-determined, I discovered Nick Gage and then kind of went on a journey with him. And I was like, well, this is the biggest it gets. I don't know. I mean, unless he headlines WrestleMania, which I don't think it's going to happen. Like we said, like we said, Vince McMahon wants big roadie boys. So we need big roadie, Nick Gage.
00:31:57
Speaker
Just like, just like a fucking, just fucking giant traps. Like, like, just because his entrance, you know, it's like a mosh pit. Like him just mowing through people. Speaking of just the mosh pit, before the AEW thing was the Cardona stuff. Oh, yeah.
00:32:24
Speaker
So like GCW were just like, this is the biggest it's going to get for next week. He's on TNT. Yep. Following the goddamn equalizer. Yep. And yeah, man, it just like it just felt like like we talked about when we first started this, it felt like deathmatch was more mainstream than it has ever been. And it was almost like we willed that into existence because it became mainstream.
00:32:54
Speaker
I mean, I did not, I ended up getting a ticket and going to Charlotte. It wasn't as far, it was like a seven hour drive or something. Not terrible. You don't have 14 hours round trip to go see a 20 minute match. It's what we do. I was not expecting glass in that match. I thought, okay, there's gonna be some chair shots. This is gonna end with the pizza cutter. One pizza cutter spot, right. Then people are gonna say, ew, gross. And then Judas Effect, it's over.
00:33:25
Speaker
It starts with the pizza cutter. You goddamn right it does. I have never seen him pull that out and slash at somebody like it was a knife. They basically set up in the first fucking 30 seconds of that match. There's going to be blood in this. Jericho's arm. He goes under the ring, pulls out all the light tubes. Right.
00:33:48
Speaker
Game in my pants, okay? I've never done that in an arena. That was the largest crowd I've ever done. Try to not look anybody in the eye. Just don't make eye contact with the sticky guy at the end of the row. Let me get through this.
00:34:09
Speaker
I'm on my own journey right now. That was bizarre. Yeah, it is for a company that is on like syndicated cable.
00:34:24
Speaker
to do a death match? Like a proper death match. Because like ECW was on TNN and stuff, but I would never like, I would always call that ECW hardcore. Like there was WWE hardcore and then there was ECW hardcore. Like ECW hardcore was a little bit closer to death match. Like if they were stepping stones, you had to go through ECW hardcore to get to death match.
00:34:50
Speaker
but they did a proper fucking deathmatch like glass cuts like it was like they
00:34:59
Speaker
built that match to get Nick Gage. They gave Nick Gages that here kid run with the ball. Let's see if these people love it. And I'll be honest, being in the arena couldn't fucking tell. I think a lot of people that was absolutely their first time seeing broken glass involved in wrestling. And I mean, he had his fans there, but.
00:35:24
Speaker
Mean there were a handful of us in my section cheering and doing the dude singing along to the fucking hate club Oh, yeah all fucking day, you know. Yeah, I mean Which which makes me go like do you think that he made? Do you think that he made? fans that night like at least some I
00:35:48
Speaker
If you look at the comments section of anything, no. But I would like to think that that got people fucking excited. Right. It's an exciting thing to see, especially when it's happening to fucking Chris Jericho. Well, the weird part about it was is that I still like when when MJF announced him.
00:36:08
Speaker
as the what second number number two in a series of five and a number. Yeah. Number two in a series of five when he announced him number two like and he called out Nick freaking gauge. That crowd did get fucking excited like at that taping. They got so excited for Nick Gage. And that's what I thought that that would translate.
00:36:32
Speaker
to the next crowd, you know? Like if other people are excited about somebody, you can get excited about somebody.
00:36:40
Speaker
I was wondering if they should have saved that for like New York, New Jersey, or Chicago, LA, Chicago, like a big wrestle crowd. Not to say that, I mean, Charlotte's where fucking Ric Flair's from. Yeah, but it's also a very Ric Flair style wrestling crowd. Like you don't have a lot of death matchy type stuff happening in Charlotte, North Carolina.
00:37:06
Speaker
like i'm not saying there's none i'm just saying that it's not a better hot spot for it um so yeah you would have thought like chicago chicago would have been a really good place uh you're right i think new york would have been a really great place um but yeah maybe that's what it was is is that it was just a difference of crowd because where were they at the week the mjf i can't remember
00:37:31
Speaker
It probably was somewhere like because I could even see doing it in Florida like doing it in like Jacksonville at Daley's like you could even do Nick Gage at Daley's because
00:37:45
Speaker
The Florida crowd has become very susceptible to deathmatch stuff because, I mean, the collective was just ran there. IWTV was doing all their stuff there. ICW's been running down there for a while, like at the pawn shop. So like, there is absolutely a crowd for deathmatch there. So it's just, maybe it was just bad timing of where they were that week.
00:38:15
Speaker
But I'm fucking proud of Nick Gage. I'm proud of everything he fucking did. He showed him exactly what the fuck he does. He got to go out and do his thing to a tee. Yep. Like he did not have to, other than just not swearing, which I bet is very hard for him. Yeah, yeah. I think that that, you know, out of everything that was probably hard for him, it was not saying the F word would probably be the hardest for Nick Gage. He's not dropping about four fucks every sentence.
00:38:43
Speaker
But no, I was so proud of that guy. Like, somebody that I've met like twice, you know? Like, it's weird to just be like, like a little, like the single two year old on the jig. You go, I know that guy. I've met that guy. I've had conversations with him.
00:38:59
Speaker
I'm in his fucking gang. Right, right, right. But yeah, like that was that was that was a really cool fucking moment for for especially the people that are big fans of like not just deathmatch, but independent wrestling in general is is it felt like.
00:39:17
Speaker
It felt like we got recognition. It felt like AEW, like AEW already kind of placates to the biggest, not the biggest independent, but the biggest company that the people that we love end up at. Like as an example, Wheeler was on this week. Like, like it's just, you know, and he's the IWTV champion.
00:39:47
Speaker
wheeler Yudas. Yeah, wheeler. Yeah, because him and yeah, he's the IW TV champ and he him and Garcia had a had a 60 minute Iron Man match. IW TV 100 and it went to a draw. God damn it.
00:40:04
Speaker
And, but they but they were there, you know, like he was just there. And it's just it's just so like, it's fulfilling to know that not only not only from a perspective of somebody who wrestles, but also with somebody who is just at the end of the day a fan of wrestling.
00:40:21
Speaker
that the shit that I'm watching, the shit that I spend the most time paying attention to is noticed by a larger company that has some money behind it, that's we're traveling, that has people like Jericho, like Mox, you know, people who have been in wrestling for, you know, 20, 30 years, you know, Arne's there, like people, and they pay attention. Kingston, you know, got a contract just from going out and saying that he was gonna stab out Arne Anderson's eyes.
00:40:49
Speaker
I will say one thing that because I hadn't been to a live tape in a dynamite before and They opened the show before it went on the air. They had Kingston come out and get the crowd hyped. Yep He's the hype man for I love that I love that him just coming out and getting an arena high people being excited to see him. That's so funny
00:41:09
Speaker
Yeah, that motherfucker is a born leader. He's just a born leader and just understands how like how to play on like that. Like I'll run through a brick wall for Eddie Kingston. Like that's how I feel every single time is like I'll run through a fuck. I'll run through fucking fire for you, dude. When I watch his promos. But yeah, like that's why I like that's what that's what I enjoy about you. That's why I enjoy about the fact that Nick Gage got that shot.
00:41:38
Speaker
to wrestle arguably one of the best talents that wrestling has seen, even if it's not even if it's not his. He's not at his peak. Chris Jericho is still, you know, like regardless of how you feel about his personal stuff, regardless of how you feel about his politics, Chris Jericho one time could arguably be considered the best wrestler in the entire world.
00:42:05
Speaker
It's so great. Like he's he's not in his prime. No. But popularity wise. Prime. It's fucking prime. Yeah. Yeah. As popular as he's ever fucking. Yeah. And that's so so getting to see Nick Gage measure to that.
00:42:23
Speaker
Was I think made all of us in like the deathmatch community and You know, I'll be a fan deathmatch wrestler Whatever made all of us like touch that soft spot in our heart where we're just like goddamn, you know one of us You know one of us fucking not necessarily made it but one of us showed them that this is fucking this is art, you know, and That's what I'm fucking so happy for that fucking dude
00:42:49
Speaker
When I got there and, cause I knew there was that 10 man with the elite in the dark order going on, I just assumed that was going to be the main event because that sounds like a main event. When that opened with them, I was like, oh my God, the cage is going to fucking headline a show on TNT. And the second this is over, the equalizer is going to play again.

Memorable TV Moments in Wrestling

00:43:16
Speaker
I mean like I'm sure that you've rewatched like the the show but like then like they said it's unintentional I don't think it was unintentional I disagree wholeheartedly
00:43:29
Speaker
I don't think it was unintentional, but that Domino's ad running directly after Nick Gage cuts Chris Jericho with the pizza cutter is without question the greatest moment in television history. Without question. There's nothing that's better than that.
00:43:46
Speaker
people are gonna learn about it in college when they're taking radio television. Yeah, it'll be in media classes forever. Like, this is good marketing. Like, towards the beginning of the book, it's gonna talk about Orson Welles and War of the Worlds and how that shocked people. Go down to the line a few years towards the newest chapter of the book. Yeah, the newest chapter of the book is the time Nick Gage cut Chris Jericho with a pizza cutter, and it led into a picture-in-picture of a Domino's ad.
00:44:15
Speaker
And then all the shit with like PBR like Twitter was fun for a minute. Yes, it was very much so. I would say that Twitter was fun. Like I would say that Twitter was fun even leading up to the Cardona match between like specifically my favorite interaction was Emil and Cardona like like him calling him Zack Ryder all the time and him like calling him a fucking mark all the time. I loved it.
00:44:41
Speaker
I loved Emmels, like the fucking, the shirt they came out with, the fucking Dieslow Zack Ryder shirt, like all of it was so, like I was so in, like it was the first, like I felt like a fucking fan of everything that was going on at that time.
00:44:58
Speaker
Well, I went to, you went to one with me, we went to all the impact taping. And Ryder was there throughout the whole few days. I spent days in the front row booing Zack Ryder and shouting MDK at him. I will say he is a pro.
00:45:19
Speaker
He never once he did not acknowledge it Eventually, he did kick a man in the face in front of me and then looked at me like in the eyes like What I wish I could do to you, right? And then I felt like such an asshole Because he went on to be the GCW champion, but those episodes aired after that. Oh, god damn it I look like a fucking idiot in the front row Yeah, the beat MDK
00:45:46
Speaker
I understand this, that match happened afterwards. They might be airing now, but that was before. I was with him on one of them. I know that it happened before the Cardona Gage match. There's a fucking pizza cutter spot on Slammiversary. Yep.
00:46:08
Speaker
Kenny Omega took a pizza cutter. God damn it. We are in a weird, weird time. Rest match wrestling. I think wrestling's changed. I think like, I think that it's just like evolution.

Diverse Wrestling Styles and Promotions

00:46:21
Speaker
Like it's a mystery.
00:46:24
Speaker
Sorry, that's not why, sorry. It's like evolution, Batista's gonna show. No, I think it's just an evolution in what is acceptable in wrestling. Like, I'm not saying that I want all wrestling to be TVMA.
00:46:40
Speaker
But what I will say is, is that I want some wrestling to be TVMA. And I think that that makes products look different. You know, GCW doesn't look like impact. And that doesn't look like Ring of Honor. And that doesn't look like WWE, obviously. It doesn't look like AEW. Everything looks, everything's starting to look different. But everybody, it seems like, except for WWE, is pushing the envelope a little bit to see what their fans will watch.
00:47:11
Speaker
Honestly, I think WWE is going different. They're like, where are the roid guys? Nobody. Nobody under six five. Wrestling was born on this. Yeah. Still a crowd for this. I think maybe get out of here, ricochet. Yep. Big motherfuckers doing flips like Vince would love Justin Kyle. Oh, yeah, he would. Oh, I just wrestled him.
00:47:37
Speaker
I haven't watched it yet. You're the cage. Yeah, we had a cage match. A surprise. A surprise cage match that we didn't know was going to be a cage match. But yeah, me and him just wrestle. That was really fun. Like he's I mean, like he's a he's a fucking he's a goddamn bruiser. He's a fucking bruiser. How the fuck I forget.
00:48:01
Speaker
How? Oh, there's a fucking neck brace on. I should remember that shit. How far into being in the neck brace do you think it's going to take to bedazzle it? So I've already been discussed. So the thing that's been discussed is I want to spray paint it gold. I don't want to do so bad, but it's so pat like it's so patting heavy that I just don't like it. Obviously, that's not going to hold the gold, but this I think would. But I just don't feel like it's enough to like make it look cool.
00:48:31
Speaker
See, I don't know about gold, but what I'm thinking, get the KOBK on there, and maybe some studs and spikes. Oh, there we go. There we go, make it dangerous to lay next to me. Yeah.
00:48:48
Speaker
An injury in health. Do not fuck with me. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Oh, yeah. Modifications to this have been discussed. We just haven't decided what we can and can't do. I think I'm going to wait for the two week checkup and I'm going to ask. Hey, modification wise, what do you guys suggest? What do you not suggest? And they're probably going to say nothing. And I'm going to say you don't know me.
00:49:15
Speaker
Either you give me the go ahead or it's being done either way. But yeah, yeah, have the match with Justin. That was like.
00:49:30
Speaker
The last, was that the last match? I think that's the last match I had before the injury. Because that was the weekend. That was the weekend before. I think it was like the weekend before. It was either the weekend before or, no, I'm sorry. The last match I had was at TWE versus Billy Tipton, Tennessee Sunshine, Billy Tipton, which was just a real fun time because he's all smiles and I am just
00:49:58
Speaker
Bitter as fuck. But I had that match to the weekend, though. So Justin Kyle, then the next weekend I had Billy Tipton and then the then the injury happened. So it's been two weeks since I've done anything. Oh, man. What else? What else has been going on? You know, I tried to see Garth Brooks.
00:50:24
Speaker
Yeah, okay. Yeah, tell this story because I have something to say at the end of it. Go ahead. If what you're saying at the end of it is, you shouldn't be going out in a goddamn pandemic with 70,000 people. No, not at all. I wasn't going to say that at all. That being said, you shouldn't be going out. You know what? Yeah, you're right.
00:50:45
Speaker
No, we tried to see Garth Brooks, walked a couple miles from our car, got to the venue, heard like a song from an opener and a storm that was not in the forecast rolled in. Got trapped on an entrance ramp for two hours and walked in a torrential downpour for a while back to the car.
00:51:07
Speaker
Um, uh, yeah, so, so I, I was on the phone with you and my wife during this.
00:51:16
Speaker
Yeah, you're broken at this point. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. My hands. My hands are all fucked up. Yeah. My hands are all fucked up. I and so I called just to see how you guys were to see how like because I saw the rain, I'd seen like it was thunderstorming. And I think I'd seen one of your guys's somebody's posts on Instagram saying that like we're walking out or something like that or we or it's rain delay, whatever. Maybe Kelly text me. I don't remember.
00:51:44
Speaker
So I called Kelly. We're talking. I'm talking to Kelly and then I had this idea and I think I told you. I my assumption is they're refunding tickets or changing the date. Yeah.
00:51:59
Speaker
one or the other. I don't think they've announced they have announced either way. The tour is going to get canceled. Right. We live in a hell hole. Yeah. Right. Right. Right. Right. Right. But my thing was is if they wanted me like I would have gladly paid the price of a Garth Brooks ticket.
00:52:18
Speaker
um for during the thunderstorm for garth brooks and his band to come on stage and play thunder rolls if you if they had done that that's well worth the price of admission of two fucking garth brooks concerts
00:52:34
Speaker
I'd pay an outrageous amount of money to watch Garth Brooks play Thunder Rolls during a thunderstorm. That would be cool. That would be so much cooler than what happened. Exactly. Because I got real soggy. I do like your one photo of you sitting on the stairs while the water just cascades behind you.
00:52:56
Speaker
So we got completely soaked like it was it was one of those moments where you just so wet that you can only laugh Yeah, you don't care anymore. Everybody's walking everybody's saying like Yeah Like I'm not gonna lie as I was walking I peed my pants twice on the big way back to the car It's just like being in a pool Less gross
00:53:19
Speaker
Yeah, right. Exactly. Yeah. Because when Kelly would Kelly go back to the house, she walked in the door and she had nothing but underwear and a bra on because she was like clothes are soaked, probably ruined. I ruined my boots. Oh, yeah. She said, yeah. She was like, I wore the real leather ones. Oh, yeah.
00:53:45
Speaker
So those those she said those boots are ruined. But you know, it's fine. You know, it's whatever. It's all part of the experience. But yeah, she said it was a long walk back to the cars. I think really the only other thing that we've we've watched that we can discuss for a little bit is Woodstock 99 documentary on HBO.

Woodstock 99 Documentary Insights

00:54:08
Speaker
Who man? What a great documentary.
00:54:10
Speaker
Oh my god, I like I've watched it a few times now just because it is it is a fun I don't want to say the whole thing's a fun watch because it gets very fucked up. Yeah, but it's an interesting watch from start to finish It doesn't feel like however long it is. I think it's an hour and 50 minutes. It felt like it was 45 minutes. I
00:54:32
Speaker
One of the guys who put on that festival holds a grudge still to this day with Fred Durst. Listen, that man was a nightmare person. Blaming Fred Durst for the fires and the riot
00:54:56
Speaker
That didn't happen till the next night? That dude can go fuck himself. Not only did he blame the riot on Fred, my favorite was he says, that's not a normal Limp Bizkit concert standing on plywood shouting, break things, break things. And all like, honestly, as somebody who lived through that time,
00:55:16
Speaker
Yeah, it kind of was. He blames the ladies on the sexual assault. Yeah, he blames the ladies and keep in mind this documentary was shot this year. Yeah. Yeah. Like he still thinks this is 2020. He still thinks this shit and was willing to say it to a camera out loud to people to other humans.
00:55:43
Speaker
Oh, man. But but like it's that's a fucking it's a really fun watch. Like, like you want to see people get covered in shit and listen to corn. This is for you. Get 100 percent, 100 percent. I like we talked about it the other day. We really like that. John Davis is just a fucking big old nerd. I don't know, ma'am. I just went out of my body.
00:56:09
Speaker
We also learned that in that documentary you learned that Scott Stapp if you pay him any amount of money he'll talk about anything forever. I mean Scott Stapp if you followed his life for the past couple years been rough. Yeah, I mean Creed guy lives in his truck. Yeah did did maybe still does. We don't know. I mean all I'm saying is a lot of musicians didn't want to be a part of that. I wonder if Scott Stapp has a cameo.
00:56:35
Speaker
Oh, because Scott's have having a cameo feels so very on brand for him. And if Scott staff has a cameo, I can tell you right now that when I returned, Scott staff will cut my first promo back. I don't know if he has cameo, but didn't he have a sex tape with Kid Rock?
00:57:02
Speaker
I don't know about that. Like I think like him and Kid Rock.
00:57:08
Speaker
Enjoyed a lady. Oh, OK. I mean. I mean, maybe what? Yikes. That sounds like the least watchable sex tape of all time. Like, because I don't like Kid Rock and I also don't like Scott Stapp. Oh, oh, that is just a that's a that's a bucket of things I don't like. The porn industry is not willing to sell sex. Oh, no. Does he have cameo?
00:57:36
Speaker
Scott Stapp. Can I guess the price? I'm pulling it up right now. Hold on. What is Scott Stapp charge? See, I could see him charging like 200 bucks. But at the same time, I could see Scott Stapp being like, no one's gonna pay that. I should probably charge 70.
00:57:55
Speaker
You so what's your guess. Seventy. You're closer with the first one. Two hundred and ninety nine dollars. Two hundred three hundred bucks to book a cameo by Scott Stapp. OK. He had seen some good cameos like I know if you book a cameo from Tiffany. Yeah. She'll sing you a whole song. Right. Is he going to sing me a whole song.
00:58:18
Speaker
doesn't appear as though he's singing you a whole song it kind of just seems like he's walking around in his house and how's he look good on him for having a house I mean he looks he looks like him but older
00:58:36
Speaker
Honestly, he looks good. Yeah, he looks good in these pictures like this. If you were a fan of Creed and this was the man that greeted you in the video, you'd be happy. The lighting is good. Like he looks healthy. What more can you ask? Yeah, but like fucking who is spending three hundred dollars on Scott Stapp cameos? What a weird way. Hold on now. Hold on a minute.
00:59:05
Speaker
Scott Stapp isn't using cameo calls yet. Let them know you're interested in one on one video calls. Now, there's a difference. I would pay three hundred dollars to have a one on one FaceTime with Scott Stapp because I would just I would ask him to recite lyrics from my own prison.
00:59:33
Speaker
And but I would want to do it work I would want to do it verse by verse so I could be like what did you mean there Scott step? How long do you think you have to facetime with Scott step? I Bet that he has like a hard out and like five minutes. I bet he lets you go five minutes and then no more
00:59:52
Speaker
It's so weird to have that conversation where your buddy buddy for a minute and you're like, all right, five minutes are up, man. Right. You got another three hundred. Yeah. Three hundred. Oh, no, me and Scott just really got into the meat and potatoes of my own prison. I saw on Facebook that Merle Allen, Gigi Allen's brother,
01:00:16
Speaker
is offering 15-minute FaceTimes for a nice price, he says. Well, he said he'll talk about anything. And I got questions. Like, why are you doing this, Merle? Oh, shit. But yeah. So yeah, that's what's been going on, watching that documentary. Have you watched anything else recently that I maybe haven't watched?

TV and Movie Recommendations

01:00:46
Speaker
I've been watching a lot of movies. I saw Green Knight. I don't like talking about stuff that I didn't like. I know a lot of people like like it. Yeah. But this movie just made me feel like a dum dum. Green Knight. Yeah. I didn't take anything away from it. I don't even know what this is. It's a it's the new A24 movie. Okay. David Lowry that made Ghost Story. Okay. But it stars Dev Patel.
01:01:10
Speaker
the evil movie, but it's like an art house. And I like an art house. But this art house, I think if they took all the most boring parts of Lord of the Rings, like the walking. This movie has a lot of fucking walking. Like a cut where there's no orcs.
01:01:30
Speaker
Oh yeah. Oh yeah. It's like, did you like looking at the orcs? No? Good. Fuck, this is for you. I know a lot of people like it. It's very highly rated.
01:01:41
Speaker
see it at your own risk. And you know what? Yeah. Here's the thing. If you're a big, big deathmatch wrestling fan. Yeah. Not for you. There we go. There we go. Not for you. Yeah. And watching shit. Yeah. I mean, I've kind of I've kind of a very potpourri of things like, like I said, tons of anarchy. Been watching a lot of New Japan, getting caught up on New Japan because I got the fucking time. Watching a lot of the summer struggle stuff.
01:02:09
Speaker
There's not really any takeaway from like I just like New Japan like I don't know I don't know why but like it makes me work harder during the day like I just put on New Japan and then I put in you know I do my job from home and I just feel like I get more accomplished when New Japan's on my television
01:02:27
Speaker
If she's looking over me while I'm trying, right, right. I feel like I need to do more. I need to do. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. If Suzuki, if Suzuki is walking into the ring, I go, I got to put in a couple more things. I got to put in a little bit more data before that before Suzuki gets to the ring.
01:02:43
Speaker
But yeah, I mean, that's what I've been doing that and some friends like I've just like caught the wayward episode of friends because I'm up at all times now. And guess what? Friends is on. If if there was like a special program that you could tune your TV to to find just friends episodes, you would have 24 hours of TV at all times.
01:03:06
Speaker
I worked at Warner Brothers. That was the biggest show they've ever had. And I believe they said at any minute of any day, that show is airing somewhere in the world. It's never not on television. So yeah, that's fucking crazy. They're still milking that fucking cow. Warner Brothers, they're probably still saying that shit. Yeah, 100%. I mean, they put out new episodes. Yeah, exactly. Fucking wild.
01:03:34
Speaker
Did you watch Suicide Squad? I have it yet. That's that's on the list of things to do this weekend. Maybe I'll come over and we can watch Suicide Squad. But fucking love that. Let's do that. Play. Yeah. John Cena. Watch the little John Cena. Suicide Squad was a highlight. Like that was one where I wanted to see it in theaters, but it actually went up on HBO before it even played in the theater. So I watched it in bed. Yeah, it was great. Fucking time. That was that was James Gunn, right?
01:04:02
Speaker
love James Gunn yeah and James Gunn fan and then uh isn't Tiki in it uh Tyka Tyka he has a lot of people have small parts um and so he does he has a yeah he has a little part did you watch his new uh fx show yet no what is it it's on Hulu right now it's called reservation dog i saw a preview for it it looks good there's two episodes up right now okay it's
01:04:28
Speaker
You up all the hours of the day. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. I'll work them out. It's a lot of fun. But like the like I told you that like the only other thing that I got set down and really committed to watching is Ted Lasso and have got caught up on that show. So honestly.
01:04:43
Speaker
You're sitting there in a neck brace. You need Ted Lasso. Yeah, I need I need I need just an overt positive person. So, yeah, so Ted Lasso.
