Speaker: What's up, man? How are are you? I feel like I have not spoken to you in a while. Yeah, you refused to hear me earlier in our conversation when Brent was on. so That was weird.
Speaker: That was fucking... Brent and I are having a normal conversation. We can hear you every 10 seconds. can't hear him. I can't see him. I can't hear him. So like your, whatever comes up on your fucking Apple contact is you on the whiteboard, which I used to call what was prior just going out with Toby. I would have called straight bullshit because it's like you on a fucking surfboard all day. don' ja But I saw it in action. So I must say that, that you did do that. So it's legit. It's not an ai profile picture. An AI profile.
Speaker: why you would choose I was in better shape back then so but anyways that's the only thing that I saw on the call and yeah but it was my idea to call you and I added you to the call and then I was like what the fuck I can't hear you and then I got disconnected and I was like okay whatever fuck you guys well Brent and I had a good conversation with that you yeah you always do um yeah I did did you you must opened my garage this morning right No.
Speaker: Was it open? It was wide open. So I didn't know if you were up and like in there and I didn't have time to to like investigate. um I almost did the code to to close it, but like ah it was just, I figured you were just there.
Speaker: Like something was not really sure why it was open. Yeah, it must have been open all night then.
Speaker: But I didn't open it all night. It's weird. Yeah. Nothing's missing. so Yeah, no, I did a quick like look around and make sure like there was no freaking you know mail stealer in there because I know you had some some problems with that. But yeah, so I just dropped the stuff off and hit the road.
Speaker: Yeah, thank you for dropping that off. Yeah, no, I ah was beating myself up over the weekend because I completely forgot about it. so Oh, I didn't need it. well I mean, when I needed it, i i know you don't need it, but let's not go there. Okay. I did need it last week, but, uh, uh, I'm, it was the small wheel.
Speaker: Jared had my, my swell small wheel de attachment. Cause I have the horizontal set up, but once in a while when I need to do a special operation, um it's a big pain in the ass to reconfigure that thing and, make it vertical with a, with a rest that goes vertical.
Speaker: Which I had to do and it took me a fucking hour and a half. So yeah, I was not happy, but I did it anyway because you know, Jared had my shit, but it's all good. Thank you.

Speaker: Yeah, same old, same old. I ah had a... I'm trying to remember like what kind of week I had, but it it was must have been pretty uneventful during the week. I got i was in the shop a couple days, um ended up fighting with some some scales that were...
Speaker: just warped enough and and i'm pretty sure it's it's it's me it's because the where i keep them and how i keep them um i just i have a tendency to leave them scattered around not stacked and and i've been meaning to like just take the wood and and put it somewhere and Anyways, that's my theory that it's partially because i just leave them out out and exposed. and But that's weird because that shouldn't be.
Speaker: But I mean, getting like I said, it's like ever so subtle warps in the in the in the scales. do You think they're getting too hot in the shop?
Speaker: Yeah, I think it's getting, it's just roasting in there. And like, and I'd imagine that you you probably don't have it because you probably open it up or you keep the temperature because you're in there all the time.
Speaker: Like it doesn't get it. So I think because mine will go in there for, you know, like a week or something, just roasting. And then I come out and shit's just, like I said, it it was, it was just slightly enough. And then, uh, to,
Speaker: And then I was like contemplating whether I just slap a liner on there and hope hope that straightens out. And then. Was it wood? Yeah, there was so two two wood handles or scales. And then i was, you know, doing the old flattening them on the the surface plate.

Speaker: Did you notice that I moved my disc grinder? No, I didn't. Oh yeah. I had to, Oh, I could see why though, without even saying anything. Yeah, I had to reconfigure. i had like the three grinders plus the disc grinder all against one wall. And then there's like a big shop sink.
Speaker: And that's where the the the new jareding machine, the water jet. Yes. has test to go because it's got to be by the water in the sewer. So I was like, I could not figure out how to get, how to not lose space. And I ended up just squeezing in that disc right beside the table.
Speaker: in the corner of the table, um like right at the end of my table. It's like I built like a little shelf there um and it's it's actually perfect and it doesn't take away any room for the three grinders. You'll see when you're you come in next. On the left side?
Speaker: On the left side, yeah. Oh, so now it's table, disc grinder, three grinders? Yeah, but the disc grinder is kind of set back and now the Ameribraid is on an angle.
Speaker: So anyway, it's it's angled left so it it creates like almost like a little triangle at the back and that's where the the disc grinder sits. Gotcha.
Speaker: Okay. it was It was a magical safe space saving thing. enterprise right there so i had to do it nice but uh yeah right hours before this i uh did my first cut on the uh on the water jet finally got all the uh plumbing sucks man i hate doing plumbing it's my my least didn't even talk about it my least favorite thing to do house right now i would rather do masonry i'd rather do floors anything before a plumbing
Speaker: But you finally got the fittings, for because I had to put a new s sink in, because the old sink was too big. um So new sink, new fittings, plumbing the water jet, all that stuff. But yeah, um ah it's one of their little predefined cuts. It's a little like a little hex key kind of thing made out of aluminum. um But yeah, it took like seven minutes to cut it.
Speaker: um But it was cool. It was cool watching the machine work. It kind of whirs and spits water and bzzz, bzzz, bzzz. And yeah, at the end, it's like perfectly cut. It's so cool.
Speaker: That's awesome. Yeah. any Any idea how long it'll do to a something out of steel? Eighth inch steel.
Speaker: It's a about an inch a minute. Okay. Okay. linear inch a minute something around that um but right after this I'm gonna start setting up a couple cut files and then just try it on some mild eighth inch steel and just do a bunch cuts and see see how works so I don't really know how to set up the cut files yet so that's what I want to spend some time on gotcha But, um, yeah, cause it knows that like you just put an SD card in the machine and you hit go and everything is a part of the cut file. Like it knows the material. It knows the, the, the thickness, like it's all part of that file.
Speaker: Hmm. An SD card. Yeah. That little fucker. Yeah. The same thing. goes with my camera. Yeah. Okay. Well, it's the same thing. Yeah. Like my old, like my, um, three printers the same way.
Speaker: It's not the micro SD at least. It's the regular size one. I got you. Yeah. Okay. Cool. Yeah. So I'm excited about, uh, jareding some blades pretty soon.
Speaker: Yeah, me too.
Speaker: Um, but, uh, yeah, it was a long, long haul getting that thing set up. There's a lot of steps to it. Like you gotta, there's, there's a million little things. made sure I read through the manual and I didn't fuck anything up.
Speaker: Um, there's power and water and sewer and abrasives and priming pumps and all kinds of stuff. Oh, sounds, sounds riveting.
Speaker: Yeah. You definitely have to read the manual on this one. There's no shooting from the hip. Oh, that must've sucked for you. I don't know. There's times I don't mind reading manuals. This is one of them.
Speaker: Yeah. And there's times you definitely don't want to read. you
Speaker: What are you saying? I'm no manual reading kind of guy. ah Yeah. and yeah And it's definitely when it's like we're doing something at my place, manual goes whoop. Yeah. ah what what do you What did we put together at your house? we the That's how the um we both do not take advantage of the the Bluetooth temperature control on our mini splits.
Speaker: All we had to do was freaking put the damn little Bluetooth dongle in it, and they're gone. They're in the box, fucking thrown away somewhere. Yeah. No, we don't need this.
Speaker: It is a remote. You don't need a Bluetooth thing. Yeah. If you're like me, you want to set it when you're on your way home, it'd be great. Well, I'm sure you could probably order them.
Speaker: Go to Mr. Cool and look them up. Yeah. Anyways, so i'm I'm proud of you. Good job. job. Yeah. yeah ah I tell you, I was in the shot. Yeah. Have you, have you, you you're a Marvel fan, right? You like Marvel movies.
Speaker: Yeah, no, I'm not. Have you seen the trailer for Doomsday? Nope. No, you should. It's good. It looks really good. So I'm, I know it just came out. So I'm, I'm, I'm excited, even though this movie is not coming out till December, but the trailer just came out.
Speaker: So I'm listening to the trailer on my phone. Well, my phone connected to the Bluetooth stereo in the shop and And you haven't heard the trailer, but at the end near the end of the trailer, there's like a shit ton of bass. Like it's like boom, boom, boom, whatever.
Speaker: And my radio vibrates off the shelf. Oh, shit. Which right behind it is all like, there's a couple boxes of like leather shit. So it vibrates off the shelf, hits the table, lands on the ground. There's leather shit. Scared the shit out of me.
Speaker: Oh, you were on the other side? i'm I'm at my table watching watching the trailer and listening to it. And then all of a sudden there's this giant boom at the end, which is not part of the trailer.
Speaker: I gotcha. It reminded me of the glass breaking. glass, yeah. Yeah. That was terrifying.
Speaker: Strange things happen in the shop, man. Yeah. That's funny. I could see it, too. Yeah, it was freaked me out. ah Did you get any shop time?
Speaker: Yeah, that's what I was talking about. Yeah. but You said you were just flattening scales. That's like a five minute job. What else did you do? Yeah. That's ah so I did a couple of those and can tell you, I ended up getting to the five minute part, but I I'd spent a bunch of time thinking about it and doing the other way on the surface fucking ground thing.
Speaker: And then um and then I decided that I didn't want to glue the liners on. And I went to start finishing some hand sanding because I just wanted to do some dumb, mindless things. And um the, it's so damn hot that the rubber on my knife vise started to slide off.
Speaker: of the two things on both sides, the top and the bottom. So then i ended up fucking spending an hour taking the knife vice apart, re epoxying everything.
Speaker: And then, cause in my infinite wisdom of, you know, just zero infinite wisdom, I went put it all back together. And then after, you know, it was like probably 10, 15 minutes that it had been sitting there. And then I went back and put it put a knife on and tighten it down. And, I was kind of hand sanding and and it just like, just the cheese slid right off the track, the cracker again. i got fucking pissed off. jesus outtic So now my fucking knife vise in pieces again. And, uh, and there's no rubber on it. And, and I was, uh, yeah. So I got a little frustrated.
Speaker: Um, so I quit and that was that. Yeah, I haven't had that problem. Yeah, I don't. My cheese stays on my crackers. Ever heard that term? His cheese slid off his cracker a little bit when they're talking about a crazy person.
Speaker: No, that one, I must have never heard that one. uh, yeah. So yeah, that that was, that was that. So it turned out to be, you know, it was supposed to be a, you know, a good, uh, evening in there turned into a bunch of bullshit and, um, yeah.
Speaker: So I didn't get it. And then i got a fucking notice from the city that, uh, The tree in front of my house, which I have let grow out because it provides an ample amount of shade from the blistering sun. my My house sits on the sunset opposite side of the sunset.
Speaker: So in the evening, I've i've talked about it before. just it's the time the The most common time that I'm in the shop is when that sun is like just... cresting down and it just beams in there so like if even if i wanted to open it up um it's it's hot as shit but uh yeah so we got to notice that the trees weren't regulation height for the street i guess like the the garbage truck so had to spend some time uh Lynn bought this ah little chainsaw on a pole off of whom Timu.
Speaker: know And i was... I'm just imagining what this looks like. It it looked legit. i it I was so pissed off that she bought it because I was like, look...
Speaker: don't buy tools like i'll i'll vet that and and i'll do that and she's like well and don't buy them off timu yeah she's like if if i leave it up to you you'll never do it right and i'm like okay well fair uh but so she bought it and i was like all right fuck it because i have the old you know saw on the stick version you know and i was just dreading going out there and doing that um but shit this thing kicked ass It absolutely kicked ass. it Something from Timu worked? it was It was perfect. I mean, it may never work again.
Speaker: oh yeah. Yeah. Cordless battery. lack the One battery lasted the whole time I was out there for about half an hour just fucking getting my Mexican on. and um But, yeah. ah I did the the street side.
Speaker: And then just today, we got another notice that Apparently, um I don't know the distances, but if if if it needed to be fucking 15 feet, I'm at 14. So they're still threatening to find us and and do this. And then they let us know that there's a um a regulation on the on the street side, too.
Speaker: And I'm like, and so now I'm pissed off, right? Because I'm like, what I have to do to get this tree up to the height is basically going to just completely ruined the shade that it provides basically.
Speaker: And I'm, and I'm pissed. So I'm going to, I'm going to call the, ah the city tomorrow and at least tell them to go fuck off while stubbornly and pout while i fix it. Cause I don't want to, cause they're like, we'll come and do it for you. And you know, yeah, they'll send you a bill. Yeah. And they'll send me a bill. So anyways, yeah. So that, that's that.
Speaker: Um, well, I too was cutting trees on Saturday. nice things that I don't enjoy doing, like taking the you know like take them they sheathing, i don't know what you call them, the bottom leaves off palm trees.
Speaker: I hate he' doing that. Yeah, yeah, yeah. But I have a we have a gardener, but we, anyways, it's a long story. I'm hella cheap, so um there's really no gardening to do because we have turf in the back and i took all the grass out of the front and it's just bark like tan bark type stuff so they basically come and um leaf blow all the the shit that falls off of the trees and um so they don't do any of uh they do the stuff in the backyard but the front yard so um yeah
Speaker: I have to do all that. And they don't do trees, right? None of them ever do trees. Yeah, though the the guy the the the other dude, I'd pay him like 50 bucks and he'd get up there and handle the palm trees. But yeah, i I'd rather pay somebody than do it's bottom line.
Speaker: That's what I'm trying to get at. But yeah, that that's that's that. so um i tried. And then I got frustrated and with my ah cheese sliding knife vice. Yeah. But Timu chainsaw on a stick for a win. Wow. Yeah. it is in it And I had to, I had to humbly tell Lynn like, okay, all right. You're, you're right.
Speaker: wow was bad You hit the jackpot on Timu. Yeah. But so we'll see, I got to go back out there and and do some more stuff. So we'll see if it works the second time. And it may have just been a one time out the box.
Speaker: You know they only put enough oil or whatever in it. It's going to seize up on me this time, but we'll see. But yeah, you probably can't disconnect the battery. So to charge. Yeah, something.
Speaker: I don't We'll figure it out. But yeah, that I was pleasantly surprised with that. Yeah.
Speaker: yeah And then what happened? Oh, then I went out to Monterey this weekend because we were supposed to have a air quotes family reunion. Once a year, we go meet my family from the valley over there by by Mike Hanford and Lamar and stuff. It's about three, four hours away. So we we meet at the at this little town in
Speaker: What's that town called? San Juan Batista. You ever been there? Yep. Yeah. So little mission town. And we we went there all my life. we've We've kind of, that's been the halfway point. And so we're supposed to go do that. And then, so I helped my brother. And ah we normally meet around noon. So I drove out there and we golfed on Saturday morning. Had to get at like four o'clock in the morning and just...
Speaker: fly over the hill, you know, two and a half hours to get there by seven. um But yeah, it was beautiful, man. God, it I really love that area. I really, really, really, really love that area. And I kick myself for not living there all the time.
Speaker: But it was just, it was gorgeous, beautiful course. Golfed with a ah a young couple. I mean, they couldn't have been in their 20s, boyfriend, girlfriend. um But they turned out to be really cool.
Speaker: Cool people. We had a good time. I whooped him. And then this whole thing with, um so Noah put out,
Speaker: This, but like, I just, I have to, i just, I got to get this out of the way. Right. So number one, there's only a couple times that I can recall where I am completely got the last time was the little Latino boy, that thing. Like I was hook, line and s sinker. No clue was happening, but Noah, uh,
Speaker: I even knew what was going on when he asked you what kind of knife. I knew there was something up when he asked you what kind of knife you use. Yeah. I mean, i figured there that it would be something like, you know, I didn't think it was going to go to the to the level that it went for him anyways. Like in it, but he asked me what kind of knife I like. Cause he's been you and him both. When he was here, you guys were busting my balls about the spider coat knife, which, which I love. Yeah.
Speaker: um And then he puts out this reel about you know like what um what kind of folder knife or knife you have, what you know what that tells about you.
Speaker: and and But prior to that, he's been doing a lot of like social media stuff. And you know i literally... in our chat literally just gave him an attaboy for all the effort that he was doing. Like, I was like, I just want to, you know, shout out, you know, buddy, ahre you're doing some good stuff. I see you getting some traction and, uh, it's good to see it and blah blah, blah, blah, blah. Little did I know that he was going to put this thing out and, um, that thing fucking blew up.
Speaker: Yeah. I mean, it blew up. It turned into like five five or six reels for him. ah Like huge, huge numbers. But yeah, and the whole thing was, you know, the the one thing that got me, because even the next day, like he put the reel out and I was like, okay, whatever. And then Toby hit me up or in the comments, Toby was like, is this the video that I saw? And I'm like, wait a minute. You were shopping this thing around to our buddies. Yeah. And then it all just came crashing down on me like, oh, my God, he got me. He just fucking straight. He straight got me.
Speaker: So it was it was pretty good. I a and that God dang it moment. um But yeah, that was that was good. Yeah. Shout out to to Noah. He did good. Those those are really good. I just watched part five right before this.
Speaker: Yeah, they they got better. The first one was... Yeah, like I said, you could tell. like He's like... He put out a... a story he's like look I didn't mean it I just I totally put this out to just bust my buddy Jared's balls like that was it I had no idea this was gonna turn into this so yeah I told him what he's got to do one on like knife shapes like profiles like someone that picks a tanto over you know or a sheep's foot or like a karambit yeah that'd be good too
Speaker: Yeah. So anyway, shout out to Noah from Bustin' Balls and making it work for him. so I love Spyderco Word and I love golf.
Speaker: But as a result of that, when I was with my brother, my brother saw that reel. And then he was like, hey, man, can you give me a knife to put in my bag? I'm like, I'm not going to give you a folder knife, but um I gave him one of the, I actually gave him the Spyderco Tenacious Fixed Blade that I'm one of the first knives I made.
Speaker: Oh, yeah. I just the one you're sitting around. Yeah, with the blue handle. Yeah. So I gave that to him so he can throw that in there. So he was super appreciative. But so that was pretty cool. But then the the whole thing with the Fricka family reunion was that everybody canceled and it ended up being just my cousin and her husband. My brother and i ended up just meeting for lunch. And the funny part is I just saw them last week because I stayed at their house when Jared and I went on our trip. So was like, you know, it wasn't much of a a reunion, but and it was good time, though.
Speaker: Good time. Good day. Got to got to hang out with my brother. So. You're lucky you can do that. I wish I could, uh, you know, it was that easy for me to get, first of all, half of my family doesn't talk to the other half, like on my dad's side. Um, so that wouldn't work, but, um,
Speaker: Yeah, no, i'm i'm I'm a little envious that you can do that and ah get together with the family every year. um Yeah, it's sad, though. Yeah, it's sad, though. It takes a huge effort, somebody to plan it. And we are that close. And there's times where...
Speaker: you know This isn't totally regular. like I've done that my whole life, but you know there's time in between and stuff like that. But yeah, it's sad when when people have the opportunity and they don't they don't do that. So yeah, not I am grateful that we we have those.
Speaker: my mind because little brother is my best friend. it always blows my mind because like my my little brother is like my best friend And we're like so close. And like when I there's people that have brothers and sisters that they're not close with at all.
Speaker: And it just that always blows my mind because, yeah, it's a yeah, it's a it's a riot when when we're together, we always have a great time. So I am grateful for that.
Speaker: I'm going to get to see, um, so my sister's ex-husband, so my ex-brother-in-law, um, is going to be in town this weekend.
Speaker: And, uh, he does lighting for bands, uh, and has done a bunch of really big bands, mostly Canadian bands, but, uh, he's going to be here with, uh, Sarah McLachlan.
Speaker: So, uh, Oh, nice. Yeah, I'm going to meet him Friday, and then he's got us, Kim and I, tickets to the show for Saturday. So, yeah, we're going to Sarah McLachlan on Saturday in Concord.
Speaker: So yeah I'm surprised you know who Sarah McLachlan is. Yeah, Sarah McLachlan has a very special place with Lynn and I. Really? Yeah. Like, yeah.
Speaker: Okay. Yeah. yeah like kind of just yeah song choice or like yeah is she yeah there when we were you know back in early well i guess it was the ninety s fuck in early 2000s yeah there's she was listening to that yeah it's a whole thing so jared i'm so proud of you for listening to canadian content Yeah. No. Yeah. I like all kinds of music, dude. You know that. So yeah, it's, it's, it's definitely, I'm familiar with a lot of it.
Speaker: Yeah. I seen Sarah in concert once before and it's great. It's very low key concert, but it's, it was really good. She's great. You know, live. Yeah, she's a good artist. Absolutely. Speaker: Is there like an outdoor venue or something in Concord? No, yeah, yeah, yeah. The pavilion. Oh, yes. That's where it is. Mm-hmm. Yeah, I've seen a bunch of bands there. Is that a big outdoor arena?
Speaker: Yeah. that's I mean, it may not be hot as... No, it'll be cool because it's in the evening. yeah shit run until late thirty s so Yeah, you can roast out there for sure.

Speaker: it's like on Ignacio or Ignacio Valley or oh yeah yeah I know you yeah so it's like at the end and yeah it's a bitch to get in and out but yeah that's good that's gonna be a long day we've got Memphis's seventh birthday party that's my grandson that morning or that afternoon and then we're going to see the show at night so nice that's a lot That's a lot of stuff for an old person and one day.
Speaker: Yeah. For sure. Yeah, I have a birthday coming up here on Friday as well. Yeah. You're going to be how old? I think I'm going to be 47.
Speaker: Didn't we figure this out last year? that Yeah, pretty sure. Pretty positive because I was telling Lynn, she was calling me 47 the other night and I was like, nope, not yet. so yeah But I was like, I was 36 twice. It was 36 37 twice. told was 36.
Speaker: twice i told everybody i was thirty six and I was only 35. So I, there was one year that I'd never actually was that age. Cause I was convinced i was age see that never happens to me. Cause my, I was born in 1970. So it's a really easy calculation. Yeah. so I never get confused as to how old I am, but yeah, if you're born in some funky off year, then you gotta do math. Yeah.
Speaker: But I don't know why it's yeah. But yeah, there you go So, uh, you're going to do anything fun. i don't we don't have I don't have anything planned on this year. um Last year we went out to, that's when I went moon charging.
Speaker: and then saw ah Who did we see? We saw Morgan Wallen and stayed out there in the in Santa Cruz Mountains. That was cool. But this year, um not much. So I'll probably golf and golf and golf.
Speaker: hoffin Golf and golf. Yeah. So nothing nothing big. Nice. But then, oh, yeah, so I was going to say that Jared has kind of taken a turn on the on Big Red, my truck.
Speaker: Okay. um So, you know, the whole time leading up to him getting his license and, you know, I told him I was going to give him the truck. and And then so he's been driving it, but he doesn't like the gas stuff.
Speaker: mileage and and what it takes to fill the thing up. So then he's saving money to to buy a bucket, which I told him the term bucket and he didn't know what a bucket was. And I was like, yeah, I, I, I raised you too good, dude. Cause if you don't know what a bucket is like, get out of here. Um, so he's been doing that, but over the last like three weeks, a month, he's, you know, his buddy's got trucks. And so he's been like, uh, he redid all the the headlights, put all the bright ass lights in change the headlight lenses, covers, um, put LEDs all over the place, the rear backups. And, and then, um, but he went over to, my buddy Dave's house and,
Speaker: And who does the lemons racing. It's got a big shop and a lift and all that stuff. So um he went over there to do the the lights. um And um but the whole the whole thing was me telling him that I I had always I've been planning for a while to go take it over there to get it up on a lift and, you know, check out the undercarriage stuff because it's when almost 20 years old.
Speaker: Oh, it is 20. Yeah, almost 20 years old. um And, you know, gets some slack in the wheel and the bushings are probably fried. And, you know, um so we had to where he had to do the breaks, some tie-ins, and couple other things. And he went out there and did that by himself, which I thought was good for him, for me not to be there, for him to do that.
Speaker: And then this time... um I made him, you know, buy all the parts and do all it i encouraging him to do it all by himself. And, um, so I was coming back from Monterey and, um I arranged for that whole thing for them to, to get together.
Speaker: And, uh, I had a conversation with Lynn and she's like, yeah, he, he had mentioned that, you know, he doesn't, he doesn't want you to go. And I was like, what? You don't want me to go like,
Speaker: you don't want me to help or like, no. And the the long story short is that he, he had a good time with Dave and he he learned a lot.
Speaker: And, and it's it's just another opportunity for me to, you know, be an adult and, and understand that, you know, there's certain things in life where, you know, that, that father, son,
Speaker: experience doesn't trend well. Right. And somebody that's knowledgeable, like my buddy, um, is teaching him. And, um, so he very kindly, it was, it was, it was, it was super sweet to be honest with you though. Um, you know, was like, go get fucked dad, get out of here. I don't want you here.
Speaker: And he's like, I want to do the work. I want to do it myself. And, and to be honest with you, if David, if I was there with, with my buddy, we, we would have up just, you know, talking shit, having a good time joking and you know, about shit. He had no idea about, you know, I probably would have gotten away. I don't enjoy working on cars at all. That's not my gig. I mean, i'd I was much rather be golfing or doing something else. So, um, but I was super proud of him for, for speaking up and, and, and, uh, you know, at least trusting and and being able to, to tell me, you know, Hey, i kind of want to do this on my own and, and learn and, you know, blah, bla blah, blah, blah. So, uh, But it was it was a weird, weird, humbling moment, you know, but as a parent where I'm like, bitch, I can, you know, like, I can do this for you.
Speaker: But, yeah. So you just take a back seat. and But he came back and they did the brakes. Dude, the truck rides... like like brand new almost nice yeah it wasn't even a big fix i mean the the war the the biggest thing is hats off to to to my buddy for taking you know what ended up being a day out of his life to you know to work with him um because that's the thing about cars is like you know it's supposed to take this long but something always goes wrong and ended up taking twice as long so they they were there all day long
Speaker: Um, but yeah, I was super happy, man, that he, uh, he came back and he was stoked. He, he got to do a bunch of the work, he came back all dirty as shit. And so I was super proud of him.
Speaker: Good for him. Yeah, it was, it was good. And he, he said he learned a bunch and, um, so yeah, it was cool. And then he came back and this morning he tended the windows. So I'm like,
Speaker: I'm like, you're doing a great job. I'm like, you're doing it. Well, they were already did. I just checked it out. It's not that bad, but, um, there I had ah they were already tinted except for the the driver's sides.
Speaker: Um, but, uh, I was like, yeah, man, dude, you're putting a lot of money and work into this, into my truck. Cause you're going to get a bucket, dude. I appreciate you. You know, thank you. for Resale.
Speaker: Yeah. Yeah. yeah I do the, yeah, the truck's like a unicorn though. Cause I've had it for a long time and and I don't ever drive it. So it's, it's sad a long time. It's barely cracked a hundred thousand miles. So sounds like my Jeep.
Speaker: Yeah. It'll, yeah, it'll go forever. So, um, that was pretty cool. Good. Um, And then fuck else?
Speaker: I had to deal with a machine of your creation today. yeah, yeah, yeah. I'm interested in this. I love this note.
Speaker: So I've been, okay like most stories and tools in the shop, it comes down to I'm lazy and I want something to fix a problem that's annoying me. So I'm annoyed when I have to change, i have to put the chuck in my mill when I'm doing folders because you got crank the mill all the way up and put the chuck in and it's a pain in the ass.
Speaker: uh my big drill press uh has belts and i don't like changing the belts in order to change the speed so i saw the drill press that you have which is a little desktop and it's a jet and i i'm i'm a fan of jet products i feel like they're better quality or i did um And I saw yours, which has got a ah ah lever to change the RPMs.
Speaker: I'm like, lever, lever, whatever. um and And I'm like, oh, that's really cool. I love that because e when you're doing folders, especially titanium and whatever, you need you need to you're changing the speeds a lot.
Speaker: I get this thing, and it's just, at first, I think like the fucking run out on it is terrible. um And then I, you know, I'm like, this is awful. I phone them up and I'm like, you know, I put an indicator on the inside of it, on the inside of the taper.
Speaker: It's like two thou, which I think is terrible for the inside of a taper. And the outside, it's like six thou. They're telling me, well, it's not really that bad. I'm like the thing, whatever. So they send me a new spindle and which I got for Thursday or something like that.
Speaker: And um they say there's a place that will change it for you in Modesto. Like, fine. So I drive it out to Modesto today with the spindle.
Speaker: The guy looks at it and he's like, well, yeah, the run out's not really that bad in this thing. And I said, well, I did a bunch of playing with it over the weekend and it's just chatter. Like it's it's like vibration.
Speaker: um So then sure enough, we changed the spindle. The damn thing vibrates like crazy. um And it really, really affects the holes. Like it looks like I drilled the hole with fucking hand drill.
Speaker: And I'm sure yours is the same. And when we opened up the top, when you have it at really high RPMs, the belts, because there's no tensioner on the belts on that thing. Maybe there is on yours, but I doubt it because it's the same model. so And it's not enough weight in this thing, so it just fucking vibrates like crazy. And I'm i'm using this for really small drills, so it's a piece of shit. um there's You cannot use this thing for any kind of accuracy. Like my $80 WEN drill press is better than this JET $650 drill press. So I'm really pissed off at this thing, and it's all Jared's fault.
Speaker: because I saw it at his place. but um That's why you buy it off the marketplace. I tried, actually. i did do i so I should have known. There was a guy that had one. It was almost brand new, and he was selling it for $350, but he was like up in Sacramento or something like that.
Speaker: um And he was selling it new. I'm sure he got it. And the same thing. The the thing vibrates like crazy. And it's useful. It is a defective um design, in my opinion. And the tech is sitting there saying the same thing. Like, yeah, there's there's nothing you can do. It just vibrates.
Speaker: So, yeah, not happy. J-W-D-P-12 is a piece of crap. And I bought it off Amazon. So I think I'm going to try to return the damn thing.
Speaker: and get something else. So what I really want is a desktop or a benchtop drill that is not going to break the bank that does variable speed with either a lever or a dial.
Speaker: So if you guys have suggestions, let me know. but And it has to be obviously pretty accurate and precise. So what are you guys using out there for this? um Yes, I can use the mill. I'm at the point of breaking down and thinking about just getting the the the the power Z axis for my mill um to lessen the annoyance of changing the to chuck in that thing.
Speaker: Yeah. So that's the jet piece of crap. and Oh, and to boot on the way back, my, um, um, what do you call it?
Speaker: ABS light in the Jeep kind of came on, on the way back. So I have to have to deal with that now. I have no idea how bad that is to fix. Hmm.
Speaker: This makes me happy. All of this makes me really happy. I don't know what your problem is. This is another example of Jared doesn't know how bad the drill press is because he never uses it.
Speaker: Maybe. i mean, it drills 530 seconds and 8th inch just fine. adam' I don't know. Yeah, because you're drilling those at what, like 800 RPM or something? Yeah.
Speaker: Yeah. no No problem. No high speed going on over here.

Of course, I had a few little glitches in the coffee. so ended up doing the coffee a couple of times, but it's par for the course.
Speaker: Um, Hey, but, um I think this is definitely one of the nicest knives I've ever done. um and Unless there's something I'm not seeing, this is definitely, I think this knife is going to be in my master set.

Speaker: I lasered the bolster and I lasered the knife itself. And I think it came out really cool. I like how it came out. and Yeah, I actually did see some a bit of it because I thought, yeah, that that was pretty damn cool.

Speaker: Oh, yeah. Sorry. I found what he was saying. He said he's got a question for us. He's studying to or preparing for his JS test.
Speaker: And he saw um somewhere that a An experienced maker, I'll say, has recommends that for the JS knife that you do a edge quench and repeat that two more times for triple quench.
Speaker: He says he's not questioning the guy because it seems like he knows what he's doing, but he's trying to understand why he recommends doing a triple quench. And he's always thought and been under the impression that that could be dangerous and lead to cracking, et cetera, and was asking for any insight and or an explanation.
Speaker: and that would be appreciated. Well, I'll give you my opinion here, which... I could definitely, in some of this, maybe there's some conjecture, but edge quenching in general, I will say is a bad idea.
Speaker: um You are much better off doing... um quenching the whole blade and then blue backing it, which is what most master smiths that I know of will tell you to do for the journeyman um knife is to blue back it, not to try to the edge quench.
Speaker: the When you edge quench a knife, the demarcation between the the steel, um the the soft steel and the hard steel, there's a brittle line there.
Speaker: Metallurgically, it's not a good idea. It's very different than ah hardening the whole blade and then blue backing it and softening that blade. You don't get a brittle demarcation between the two like you do on an edge quench.
Speaker: Edge quench is overall just not a good idea. um You want to debate me? Show me some some data. I know I read this at some point. I'm not making this up. I'd like to find the source of where I read that. Um, I'm pretty sure it was the one of Laren's, um, um, articles.
Speaker: I could be wrong on that, but, um, and everybody says when they're making some shit up, Dennis, ah I read that. Uh, Lauren, Lauren, Tom Thompson, Tom, where he told me that. Yeah. And, uh, the whole three times,
Speaker: I don't get that at all. Yeah. ah That, yeah, that, that, that question is definitely for you. That's out of my, yeah, that, that, i I don't understand. I anyway, talk to some other, talk to some mastersmiths, a whole bunch of them, and then maybe get an average of what they would do.
Speaker: My mastersmith, Mike V. I know other mastersmiths um that would tell you do a full do a full quench and then blue back it, meaning heat the spine and remove the hardness from the spine.
Speaker: Um, so that it's soft is probably a better way to go. Yeah. And every edge quench knife that we saw tested broke. I'm lying. I'm just kidding. Were so more than wasn't?
Speaker: I can say that the blue black the blue-backed knife that I saw did pass. Yes. I've seen many blue-backed knives that passed. It's almost a cheat code because you're leaving the bottom half-inch hard and you're softening the rest of the blade. So, of course, it's not going to break. No, no.
Speaker: Yeah, but um yeah, it's an interesting question. I don't know i if there's some other reasoning behind that. I don't really get what it is. I'm curious, you know, what the science behind that would be.
Speaker: And that's I always ask that. If I don't know, what it what's the science that backs it up? um Because I hate it when someone says, well, yeah, but lore.
Speaker: i don't like it when someone uses lore as an answer to a question. I like the metallurgical reasoning behind it.
Speaker: So you're not a due norther? i'm Yeah, I'm not i'm not a ah due norther at all. All right. Uh, we got another question here. We'll get through our questions today. Uh, first up, what's up, man. I started listening the show a few weeks ago and I got so hooked that I started from the beginning.

I've been making knives for about seven months now and on very cheap equipment. I have a buck tool, two by 42 grinder, a cheap drill press. A jet drill press apparently. Yeah, right.
Speaker: and um and a two burner Vever Forge for heat treating. very proud of the progress I've made um and the quality of work that I've been able to produce. I want to broaden my skills, but I don't know where to start. If you guys have any advice on what direction I could go to improve my work without breaking the bank. Speaker: What would you tell them, Jared? I'd tell him at seven months making progress, um I would start... I would keep the process that he's got going right now.
Speaker: um and And however he's able to start putting some money away and either...
Speaker: get a grinder, a variable speed, or some kind of a heat treating oven. That would, that's, those are the two things I think that are, are real game changers for your output, I should say. And then for me, it was, it was the heat treating oven that I ended up buying before the grinder. Um, heating out of a, uh, out of a, ah forge, just, I had zero confidence behind it. Um, personally.
Speaker: Um, but like I've seen Dennis do it many times and, you have the HRC tester to, you know, to, to test it and make sure everything's good. It can, it's definitely a viable, uh, option, but, um, you know, if you were, uh, looking for some consistency and, um,
Speaker: in that realm for i think that's ultimately the the main thing about the knives that you're you're putting out especially if you're selling them right if you're not confident in the heat treat then yeah you probably shouldn't be doing it so yeah and the data file yeah like you were talking about the i don't know when you were talking about that but that's that's not the uh not the way but um
Speaker: economically, I think you're, you're right at the point where you're fucked in that row, in that realm. I, you know, I don't know if anybody's ever told you that, but it's either you stay right where you're at or you got to start putting some money in. Cause, um, yeah, it, it doesn't get any cheaper from here. i mean, you could build your own stuff too. Like, uh, I know a guy who has a YouTube channel that, um,
Speaker: I used to watch regularly when I was has a lot of great content. It's done the community a real ah real good service of, you know, once you're you you have, ah you know,
Speaker: a two 72, there's some economical ways that you can build your own stuff. That's, that's a good and a viable option to, to go doing. I can't remember the name of the the YouTube channel though. So
Speaker: what do you think, bud? Um, I think my answer to this has changed over the last few years. And my first answer is going to be save up and take a class.
Speaker: I think you're going to cut your learning and your mistakes faster by taking a class than you are from buying a new tool.
Speaker: A two by forty two while not a two by seventy two it's pretty close, especially if you have, I don't know if the buck tool two by 42 is like variable speed. It's probably not.
Speaker: So yeah, at some point, but I think, you know, a class, even a one day class, like, you know, but ideally go take a two day class, make a knife beginning to end with someone who has like the tools that you're thinking about getting.
Speaker: Well, that's what I was about to say. Like, I totally, i like that idea, but I was just thinking about it that you're going to go, i mean, you go to somebody like Dave Lish's shop and he's got, you know, the high end of everything. And then you're like, oh, that's fucking cool. I know how to do it here. Yeah.
Speaker: But you're going to learn techniques and you're going to learn, oh, this is why this machine is useful. And this is, you know, of course, you're going to have some machine envy, but not all not all places you're going to take a class are you going to use like top, top equipment. Like, yes, you're probably going to use Okay, and you're going to see what you like about the 2x72 more than the bug tool. And maybe you'll think, oh, well, I can wait on that or I can't. And you're going to learn a bunch of skills, right?
Speaker: that's going to shortcut your learning. Like Mike V said in in our interview, that um um Hancock told him that he's going to learn so much that this is going to save him years of making.
Speaker: Sure. And I think it it depends on what, what stock, it sounds like he's, he's forging though, but I could be wrong. He's he's got a forge, you know? So I think it, it, it depends too on what, how you're going about making too. Cause if you're going to forge a hundred percent, I totally agree with what you're saying.
Speaker: Excuse me. Um, if you're doing like stock removal, I think, uh, I mean, still a good idea, but for me anyways, when I had a, fuck, I think I had the Jet 2x42, and that thing just had haul ass speed.
Speaker: like I mean, it was, yeah yeah to to me, to think about like me, At the skill level that I was at when I was using that, like it frightens me today.
Speaker: Slowing the fucking grinder down, you know, when I got to, you know, 120 or something like that was was a big deal for me. um And I think the variable speed was was was the key there.

Speaker: I had a ah listener, ah an anonymous, um reach out to me about um asking for some information on somebody, like a family member that was...
Speaker: having some, um, alcohol and drug use issues. And, um, I just, every now and again, um I'll, I'll have like a a huge amount of insecurity.
Speaker: Um, it's not shame anymore, but like, I, I, I'm sometimes hesitant to talk about, you know, my journey through recovery. um But I always do it because, you know, you never know who needs to hear some stuff. And it's it's moments like this where I've just randomly started blurting out that, you know, I'm in recovery and, you know, I've I'm an addict. And I don't, I don't drink or use anymore. And I've found success in in a life that somebody actually, i heard this the other day, I asked somebody how they're doing. And they said their response to me was better than I deserve.
Speaker: And it really hit me hard. um Because like, every now and again, you can i can anyways, get kind of wrapped up in um the the daily grind and yeah find the inability to to get in touch with gratitude. and and that's really partial to To the point where I forget, you know, what life used to be like. And then, you know, so, you know, on my clean date birthday, I talk about it and, you know, i've had a handful of people, but, um, you know, it's, it's moments like that where somebody, um, has heard me talk about it and they feel comfortable enough, um, trusting enough to, to bring up the situation. and to get some information about that situation. And I'm incredibly honored, humbled, and extremely grateful for um people that have that trust to to talk about it. And I think courage is the other word that i'm I'm looking for. Because it's not something that every family person knows how to deal with, has experience with it. And if you're lucky enough, you know, to be in in that position, um you know, to to have a resource to to. talk to
Speaker: um and get some information is just, it's it's one of the the the the blessings I'll say of of being clean and and and living the life that I live today. um So I just felt like it was important for me to say, you know, for for everyone that's like, ah, here we go again, if that even happens, I don't know. You know, when the subject does come up, it's it's moments like that where, you know, I have the opportunity to to share my experience, strength and hope and, and, and talk to somebody about it. Um, especially in this situation, because the sad part is, is that, um, you know, there's not much that you can do for somebody else. That's, you know, that's drinking. If it's not you yourself or using, um, and how that affects a family is, is devastating in a lot of situations. So, um, you know, that, uh, just was a, a very, um,
Speaker: very humbling moment and just kind of reinforced, you know, why, why I do, you know, take the the few times that I do to talk about it. um Because, you know, moments like this come up. So um I just,
Speaker: just felt like I needed to say that. And, uh, cause yeah, I never know who needs to hear it. You know, um, I had somebody else re, uh, reach out to, and I was talking about the, the men's mental illness, uh, month two, you know? Um, so you're not alone.
Speaker: and, uh, that's, that's just the, uh, the, the thing I wanted to, to just mention again, you know? So, um, not that I have all the answers or,
Speaker: pretend to, but, you know, uh, I've been through a couple of things and, and I'm happy to share, you know, what I, what I'm able to, um, you know, if, if that, uh, unfortunate situation arises. So, so we, I just, eat did you, were you able to provide some insight to this person?
Speaker: Yeah. Um, yeah. And it's the same thing, you know, there's, there's not shits you can do for somebody that's drinking, using that doesn't want to stop. Can't help someone who doesn't want to.
Speaker: Yeah. That's the first and foremost thing. But my, my number one concern, because I've had this conversation countless times, uh, my number one concern becomes how can the person asking the question, how how can they not put themselves in a position to be taken advantage of and hurt? Because, you know, by nature, a using addict or an alcoholic is very manipulative and, you know, uh, In all rights, you take the drugs and alcohol away from them. They're decent people.
Speaker: They're just not themselves. And they make horrible decisions when they're under the influence and they can cause a wreckage and damage a lot of things. So over helping, always say you can love someone to death. And that's the one thing that I try to say is that the the best thing you can do for them is just, you know,
Speaker: stop helping and, you know, suggest, um, you know, some kind of recovery of, of whatever there's millions of, there's not millions, but there's several ways to do it. You know, it's not one fits all. So, um,
Speaker: But the but the the most important thing is if you're, is to, you know, just protect yourself and and your loved ones, your immediate loved ones by like not trying to like, oh, hey, look come, come live with me. I'll fix you. That's a horrible idea.
Speaker: Do not do that. Keep them away from you and your family and love them from a distance with boundaries. So, yes. Yeah. But.
Speaker: That's it. least you could At least you help somebody, give them some advice. and Yeah. Even if it's just someone to talk to about it.
Speaker: Yeah, absolutely. Yep. Cause it's, yeah, it's a, it's one of those yucky, icky, shameful things. And, you know, it doesn't need to be cause it's, it just takes a little bit of a little bit of education. And unfortunately I have a shit ton of experience with it. So I'm happy to share that and, you know, ease that, ease that process for you. So.
